EDITOR’S NOTE
B
efore fall starts fading to winter, take note of our November beauty finds and favorite fashion trends of the season. From new restaurants such as Frevo, which offers tasty French fare in the trendy West Village, to Florida getaways, tis the season to take in as much fun as you can! He might be the star of NBC’s The Blacklist, but Harry Lennix, who has appeared in a long list of films, is already thinking about his legacy. This affable actor, who feels like a native New Yorker after moving to the city for a second time, opens up about the roles that appeal to him most, as well as the role he wishes to play in the lives of others. Having recently announced his involvement in an upcoming performing arts center in the South Side of Chicago, where he grew up, Harry wants to heighten the theater experience for those in the community. While he now roots for the New York Rangers, it is clear that Harry hasn’t forgotten his own roots. His other passion project is his production company, which allows him to distribute films that are both relevant and revolutionary. We also spoke with Albert Gad, who owns Diamonds International, the largest chain of jewelry stores in the Caribbean, as well one of the city’s most gourmet Glatt kosher restaurants, UN Plaza Grill. Gad strongly believes in employing and empowering women, many of whom work in high-level positions at his company. Let’s just say that if you want some diamonds with your dessert, head to the UN Plaza Grill! Jon Fisher might have founded several successful companies, but more importantly, he has figured out how to succeed in his personal life, and he wants to show you, too! This down-to-earth entrepreneur knows how to start a start-up and is hoping that things in this country start looking up, which is why he joined the Biden for President Finance Committee. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, make sure to give thanks for friends and family, as well as peaceful retreats and glamorous getaways! Spend the holiday at the Lodge at Glendorn, which features cozy cottages and plenty of activities in Bradford, Pennsylvania, or escape to the stylish Kimpton Surfcomber Hotel. Wherever you wind up, cheers to this festive time of the year with some our favorite cocktails and have and safe and happy Turkey Day! IG @allthefamenoneofthefortune

SOCIAL SAFARI NY Philharmonic’s 178th Opening Night The New York Philharmonic seized the crown this year as the glamorous gala that signaled the beginning of the new social season. Bradley Cooper, Alec and Hilaria Baldwin, composer Karen LeFrak and her husband Richard, model and beauty influencer Sofia Symonds and others of that ilk and stripe were among the music lovers at the opening of the Philharmonic’s Lang Lang and Maggie Ueng 178th season. The Tsai @ NY Philharmonic heavenly concert featured Lang Lang, who is arguably the top pianist on the planet, playing a breathtaking Piano Concerto No. 2 during the all-Beethoven program. The Phil, as the orchestra is charmingly known by its closest friends, played the composer’s iconic masterwork, Symphony No. 5, under the brilliant baton of Jaap Van Zweden. You can never hear this ground-breaking, celestial work enough. After writing the first four instantly recognizable notes to the piece, Beethoven reportedly said, “Thus, Destiny knocks at the door.” The night raised $3.7 million and honored outgoing Chairman Oscar S. Schafer and his wife, Didi, for being the most generous donors in the Phil’s history. On December 11th the orchestra’s beloved movie night will play the film score of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone while showing the film. There will also be a matinée on December 14th, which makes it a perfect occasion to bring young children and introduce them to “Uncle” Phil.

hether you’re a seasoned golfer, new to the game or diving deeper in retirement, Golf & Body NYC is the perfect private club for the New York golf fanatic. Located in the heart of Midtown, the club is a 25,000 square golfers oasis with unparalleled offerings. Since opening in 2013, G&BNYC has been home to some of the most influential and powerful people the city has to offer. G&BNYC offers their members a tour pro like experience of golf professionals, fitness coaches and sports medicine, along with state-of-the-art technology, a Golf Digest Top 100 Club Fitter and some of the finest cuisine in the neighborhood. The facility offers the ability to work on your game all-year long without having to leave the city. G&BNYC is truly the number one place to up your golf game while escaping the hustle and bustle of the city.
22 | resident.com
There are multiple membership categories that cover all lifestyles. All of their categories offer access to wellness consultations, nutritional reviews, complementary club fittings, top of the line hitting bays and three putting greens for individual practice, full use of the fitness center, priority use of space for events and bag storage for one set of clubs. Their fully equipped fitness center, with top-ofthe-line equipment, allows members to stay shape whether working out alone or with a trainer. From chiropractic appointments to massages, members receive advanced treatment – after all, you are always treated right at G&BNYC! “While we treat members to help them get back into playing shape our main specialty is injury prevention,” explained Bradley A. Borne, D.C., Director of Sports Medicine and Wellness at the club. “We have full-time therapists, acupuncture, cupping, yoga and pilates, as well as a 10,000 square foot gym. We are constantly looking
to provide our members with the best possible options to maintain their health and build strength. We have recently added a ski ergometer and assault airbike which not only check the cardio boxes but build strength and help to rehab from injury. Our members are busy people, so we give them the most beneficial things to do during that hour of free time every week. We try to customize each program based on our members’ goals and time frame.” When it comes to how members can best utilize their time at the club, Head Professional Ron McDougal, named one of the best 25 instructors in the state, demonstrated the benefits of some of our equipment and programming not only as it relates to the golf swing but also using the services to build an allaround better lifestyle. “Many of our members spend 40-60 hours a week at their desks, in boardrooms or on planes and they need a beneficial routine for both on and off the course.”
John Prugh
With personalized attention from performance coaches to an in-house chef who can make everything from cauliflower crust pizza to chicken wings, this is one unparalleled private club. The intimate nature of the club also makes it the perfect place to socialize with other members, whether they are CEOs or professional golfers. Each member, who is made to feel like an A-lister, receives an extensive assessment. The golf evaluation is a major component of their membership experience and creates a series of baseline numbers for every aspect of your game, including power, control, and accuracy. According to General Manager Danielle Kindelmann, “there are other places in the city to hit balls indoors, but G&BNYC strives to help members build a golf swing that will translate to the golf course. In recent years we have built relationships with green grass clubs to give our members the opportunity to take their performance team with them on the course. As far as the member who is more of the leisure type golfer, the club also provides a quiet escape from the noisy bars and restaurants of NYC where members and their guests can enjoy a meal and grab a drink our bar while playing 18 holes!” Head Professional Ron McDougal highlighted the importance of the member experience when talking about one of the true gems G&BNYC has to offer when it comes to their fitting bay. “A few years back we partnered with Pete’s Golf who has been known as the name in club fitting amongst Long Island golfers for four decades. They offer a brand agnostic club fitting experience that I have never seen match in 30 plus years I have been in the business. It has been great to add to our member experience but not only offering a Top 100 fitting experience but really incorporate it as part of building the members game when the golf pro is able to take part in the club fitting by adding feedback on golfer tendencies, an experience that isn’t offered in many places!” Although Golf & Body is a members only club, non-members do have access to club fitting with Pete’s Golf. A few of the other ways to access the club as a non-member would be through hosting a private event which can range anywhere from 10-200 people or through our newly added PT clinic, COAST Rehab of Manasquan, NJ. With endless entertainment options and a sophisticated bar area that can be transformed into a runway show or team-building retreat, you can go from golf to a grand event without leaving GBNYC! golfbodynyc.com

BROTH BY DESIGN Recreating a Superfood By w. a. muller
B
one broth is one of the most ancient superfoods present in most of cultures. For Dr. Luiza Petre and Irina Peterson, broth has been a staple of their lifestyles since childhood. Both originally from Romania, which has a strong “broth culture,” Dr. Petre and Peterson sought to create a delicious and nutritious option that replicated the traditional version of “Grandma’s cooking,” which they remember fondly. While Dr. Petre and Peterson only met five years ago, the connection they felt seemed like they had known each other since childhood! Not only did they share mutual friends and connections from Romania, but their love of their culture consolidated their friendship. As the popularity of bone broth soups began to flourish in the U.S. in the past few years, the trend piqued their interest. As a certified Cardiologist and nutrition expert who manages weight loss clinics, Dr. Petre has always been on the lookout for alternative protein sources to whey-based products. She likes how bone broth is more easily tolerated, as well as that it has high collagen content and other benefits towards a healthy gut. Her health and nutritional expertise combined
24 | resident.com
with Peterson’s financial background and business acumen made the perfect pairing to team up and create a new business. Realizing that they could combine this traditional food concept stemming from their cultural heritage to fit into a protein supplement market, the concept of Broth by Design was born! When compared to other bone broth products on the market, Broth by Design is unique as it comes in powder form that is available in a 14 oz, 21 portion jar as well as in individual sachet packets, which makes the healthy broth perfect for the busy onthe-go mentality of today’s society. “We wanted to create a ‘broth lifestyle’ that is dedicated to ‘delicious wellbeing,’” says Broth by Design cofounder Irina Peterson. “In addition to making a product that is easily accessible, our slogan ‘Taste Matters’ stems from our commitment to not settle for less than delicious. This includes not only tasting good but smelling good too.” Proteins are recognized as the “building blocks of life,” but it is important to choose a protein that is
easily absorbable but also great quality. Because of this, Broth by Design uses the best quality protein base available and adds delicious natural flavors, as well as functional add-ons such as MCT oil, adaptogens, minerals and electrolytes, with no artificial ingredients! And – unlike other brands, offers a completely plant-based protein broth that’s 100% vegan. “Peas are a Rockstar when it comes to plant-based proteins and because many are following a plantbased or vegan diet today, we wanted to create a product that addresses this growing trend,” says Broth by Design co-founder Dr. Luiza Petre. “Additionally, we wanted to make sure everyone can enjoy our product, so having the plant-based protein option allows us to reach consumers who may otherwise not be able to benefit from this ancient known superfood.” The broths are offered in three delicious flavors including Grandma’s Chicken Soup, Vegetable Bouillon, and Pea Protein Vegetable Bouillon. brothbydesign.com

rom playing the Assistant Director of the FBI Counterterrorism Division on the hit NBC show The Blacklist to pursuing his own passion projects, Harry Lennix is loving life and lifting up others along the way. He might have starred in mega blockbusters including The Matrix series and Batman V Superman, but Harry still remembers growing up on the South Side of Chicago, where he attended a high school seminary before becoming a public school music teacher.
“I’m the son of a guy from Louisiana who died before I was two. I was the youngest of four and my mom put us all through school. I had a great fascination with the Catholic church and mass and the rituals of it. In some way the rites and the rituals got me in touch with presentation and eventually acting and producing. I went to a high school seminary in ’79, and we were the first seminarians in America to be visited by a pope in Chicago. It was Pope John Paul II and it was a huge deal. I was really interested in activism and service. After graduating from Northwestern University, I became a teacher to keep the lights on and pay the rent – it
kept me from becoming a waiter. I was also a professional actor and did a number of plays. I would rehearse at night after teaching school, so I would have 18 to 20 hour days. After getting work in movies in Chicago and Los Angeles, I took a leave of absence before coming back to teach school. After a long period of learning my craft and strengths and applying it in stages throughout the US, primarily in Chicago, I got a call from a former classmate asking what I was doing. I told her I was teaching and she said come to New York and I’ll be your representative, and I did.”

This ambitious actor, who started getting jobs in movies and tv shows, eventually landed a role in a movie called The Five Heartbeats. This film put Harry on the map in Hollywood – and convinced him to keep following his heart, which led to additional projects. Harry, who has appeared in a long list of films, including Justice League: Throne of Atlantic, Barbershop 2: Back in Business, Ray and Across the Universe, is now in the longest running show he’s ever been in, The Blacklist. Lennix, who has been playing Assistant FBI Director Harold Cooper for seven years, is enjoying his longevity in the business. Harry also appears on Showtime’s popular show Billions. “I really do love being a part of The Blacklist, it’s great when you can have fun at work, especially since I shoot ten months out of the year. I like challenging parts, whether it’s playing character parts or the lead. It’s like running a hundred-yard dash instead of a marathon, you just use different muscles. As long as the story is good, I’ll usually enjoy the part.” Lennix is now building his own legacy in Chicago, where he just announced that he’s going to be developing a performing arts center on the South Side. The stateof-the art facility will allow the community to enjoy high caliber live performances every night. According to Harry, patrons will be able to “see something culturally significant and artistically fulfilling and relevant that speaks to an experience that is underserved. I want to make Chicago the capital of black America, and the South Side is the epicenter of that. It’s long overdue, and I’m privileged and honored that I get to be a part of it. There’s no real central place for the arts in Chicago, or a center where multidisciplinary forms can be presented, and there’s certainly not that for black people in the whole country. Taron Patton who was at one point the executive director of Congo Square Theater, said let’s build a home and I said yes, we should do it.”

While you might be able to catch him on stage one day at his performance center which is slated to open within the next couple of years, Harry is currently focusing on this fulfilling stage of his life. After living in Los Angeles for a bit, Harry, who had lived in New York in the 90s, moved back seven years with his wife, Djena Nichole Graves, who is in private equity, and now considers Manhattan home. From listening to live jazz and eating by Lincoln Center or at Smoke in Harlem, Harry, who lives in Midtown West, near his favorite restaurant, Tuscany Steakhouse, has truly embraced the city lifestyle – he even roots for the Rangers! “The best thing about filming The Blacklist is that we are able to travel to all five boroughs, as well as the Hudson River Valley and Tarrytown. New York in my opinion is the greatest city in the world.” The always energetic Harry is also involved in other endeavors which hold deep meaning for him, including his production company called Black Faith Entertainment. “My real purpose with

this is to capture the religious experience of black people in an artistic form. I don’t think there’s anything like that or enough of it. People without spiritual artistic imagination are bound or doomed to some extent to always look outside of themselves for salvation. I have a film called Revival, a musical version of the Gospel of John that merges Broadway and cinema styles in a way that hasn’t been seen before. The movie is about to come out in December on Sony Revival streaming and features people of all colors.” This successful self-starter who started getting into distribution about ten years ago, came out with his first movie called Trouble Waters starring Tatum O’Neal, Robert Patrick from Terminator and himself. He is about to release H4, an interpretation of Shakespeare’s Henry IV shot in the streets of LA with an all-black cast which is the first black Shakespeare film about King Henry IV. “I’m putting to use what I’ve learned, but it needs to be made relevant for the benefit of everyone, not just black people. What proof do they have to show that
Shakespeare is universal? My career is probably closer to winding down than to getting started, so I want to pass the ball on to provide opportunities for other people. I don’t have any intention of hanging up my spurs or anything, it’s just about this next generation.” Lennix is also on the board of Reading Rescue, a professional development program and a oneon-one research-based literacy intervention geared towards struggling first graders. The program is currently in over a hundred schools throughout New York, especially in challenged neighborhoods. Harry is also the spokesman for The Prostate Cancer Foundation’s “Know the Numbers,” a campaign to raise awareness about how prostate cancer disproportionately affects African American men. From his longstanding show to his work on building a legacy, Harry is at the height of his career and can’t wait to show you what he has coming up next!

MIRABEAU A Passion for Wine By w. a. muller The Mirabeau story is one of following a dream and the pursuit of a deeply held passion for wine. In 2009, after years of dreaming and scheming, Jeany and Stephen Cronk made the decision to leave the leafy suburbs of South London behind in exchange for the blue skies and sunshine of Provence. With three young children in tow, they held hands and leapt into the unknown. Armed with big ambitions to make a world-class rosé wine, and willing to challenge established wisdom, they founded Mirabeau. They embarked upon the ultimate family adventure and created one of the world’s most loved brands of rosé. In order to produce a quality and style that is consistently excellent year after year, Mirabeau’s winemaking philosophy has been to search out and work with some of the best vineyards in Provence. Their rosé wines have been crafted from some of the finest sun-drenched vineyards in the region. The focus is on making delectable, dry pink wines that are a perfect partner to a vast assortment of foods and are diverse enough to be served at any occasion. • Mirabeau Classic is where the story began back in 2010. It is a fruit-forward wine with lovely aromas of strawberries and pairs beautifully with aromatic foods. • Pure is their flagship rosé that was inspired by long, languid days on the Côte d’Azur. A delicious balance of dry, fresh acidity with citrus aromas and lovely minerality. • Étoile is a stunning lychee coloured rosé with crystalline nuances, almost celestially sublime. A gastronomic rosé for moments of unadulterated enjoyment, Étoile is the perfect accompaniment to fine food, where its defined structure thoroughly shines. Mirabeau is driven by passion and desire to create products that people love, which has led to innovations such as their La Folie, a delicately effervescent sparkling Rosé. They also have Prêt-a-Porter, a high-quality rosé in a beautiful and environmentally friendly aluminium can, as well as Forever Summer, their lower alcohol and vegan rosé wine. 10 years after moving to Provence, Stephen and Jeany are delighted to have achieved another goal - the purchase of a beautiful domaine in the commune du Golfe de Saint-Tropez, about 5km from historic La Garde-Freinet. The domaine is a little over an hour from Nice airport and an hour-and-a-quarter from Marseille, and is therefore ideally situated for international travel but also providing many local activities and typical Provençal destinations. Mirabeau wines have been recognised with a multitude of awards from the industry’s most respected competitions, and enjoy a wealth of positive reviews from critics such as the Wine Advocate: ‘As good as Provençal rosé gets’ and Matthew Jukes: ‘Effortlessly classy, heart-achingly beautiful rosé’. ‘What really makes us happiest is that our wines have become an integral part of people’s lives and are synonymous with friends and family having a great time together.’ mirabeauwine.com

iamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but girls know the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach. As the owner of Diamonds International and the UN Plaza Grill, Albert Gad has found the ultimate combination that makes his A-list clientele happy. Knowing that a strong leader in business has to stay ahead of the curve, Albert is often the first to spot opportunities in a market and finds ways to not just fill the void but to create unlimited potential for others. From a small store in St Thomas to 130 stores throughout the Caribbean, Mexico and Alaska;
Albert has guided his team to create a sustainable and scalable business that has become the number one jewelry and fine watch luxury retailer in the tax- and duty-free shopping world. This is no easy feat for any retailer but Diamonds International is so much more than a jewelry retailer. As a vertically integrated business, Diamonds International handles every step of a diamonds journey after mining – something very unique in the diamond world.

looks for the right person for a role, even if they don’t know it at the time. The jewelry world has historically been a very male dominated workplace, but Albert recognized the need to include women in key roles and to create opportunity paths to help break through the glass ceiling. Identifying strong women and giving them the experience, they need to grow in this challenging business has been one of the most noted characteristics of Diamonds International among its peers and competitors. One sterling example of this is Tatiana Conte, Director of Strategic Business Development. After joining Diamonds International fresh from the Gemological Institute of America, Albert has mentored Tatiana from her entry level gemologist role. “I was eager to learn and grow within the company and Albert saw that and recognized it. He quickly moved me around through various departments, from design to production to marketing and branding. He also allowed me to explore different aspects of business development within the company. To see a young woman be a part of top-level decision making at such a large company is not common, but that never mattered to Albert. I am so appreciative to work for a company and CEO like this one. Albert gave me the opportunity and the platform to grow, and it was up to me to execute everything and make it happen. For that, I am forever grateful.” In pursuit of innovation, Albert not only invested early on into the concept of branding diamonds but wanted a diamond like no other. And he found in the Crown of Light diamond – a diamond like no other. You hear the pride in his voice when the conversation shifts to the Crown of Light “The Crown of Light is a round diamond featuring 90 facets with a domed top that stands out from other traditional round diamonds. It sparkles more than any other cut out there and our customers love it. In only 10 years, Crown of Light became the number one selling diamond brand in any of our markets. “ Supplying the demand for Crown of Light is only achievable by the fact that Diamonds International is a De Beers sightholder, one of eighty companies in the world who are eligible to purchase rough diamonds directly from De Beers. This demand keeps their Director of Gemology, Cheryl Cook, very busy but she uses this energy to keep her motivated. She feels “empowered and inspired to work with so many women that are passionate about what they do.” From polishing the diamonds in factories in Namibia, Ukraine and Canada, designing jewelry, setting the diamonds and selling them in the stores, each stage

dining of a diamonds journey is meticulously handled by the Diamonds International team. Whether you fall in love with the stackable rings or find the engagement diamond that seals the deal, there are many options that entrance the shoppers. In the rare moment that you don’t find a piece that suits you, you can create custom Crown of Light pieces that are unparalleled in sparkle and style. With the focus on the final product and helping people celebrate life with diamonds, Albert’s team at Diamonds International work hard to achieve these moments of delight. “Working in DI is like finding a second family,” explained Carrie Lindsay, who does marketing and education for the company. “Each day brings new and very unique challenges, but the teamwork and collaboration help us overcome them. You never feel like it’s just you against the world. Whether you are in New York, Miami or the ports in the islands, there is always someone who is happy to learn from you and who you can learn something from as well.” When it comes to her boss, Carrie said that Albert always has his team’s best interests at heart and genuinely listens to their ideas. “He doesn’t say ‘no” right away but instead asks questions to get more information. If the proposal you suggested isn’t ideal, he helps you find a different way to look at it.”

Albert’s vision doesn’t stop with the jewelry world. When he saw a shuttered restaurant space near the United Nations Plaza combined with a lack of quality kosher restaurants nearby, he conceptualized a space where people could gather over the unifying power of great food. The UN Plaza Grill, with its dramatic décor and delectable dishes, has become a favorite spot amongst locals, celebrities and visiting politicians from prime ministers to presidents. Some prefer the glamour of the main dining room with a mural of hand painted tigers and luminous lightshade installations, some prefer the intimate booths in quieter rooms, but many have enjoyed the ability to rent private spaces throughout the restaurant for anniversary, birthday and company parties. The restaurant is also popular for hosting Sheva Brachot, Jewish post-wedding celebrations. Albert acknowledges that the restaurant business can be tough, especially with an adherence and respect to Jewish holidays and Shabbat, which means they remain closed some Fridays and Saturdays. But just like with diamonds, Albert knows luxury is the key to his success with quality food and elegant ambience. “We’re very highend,” explained Albert. “We wanted to create something that gives the kosher community a place to go. We’re continuously cater to our clientele. The food is top notch. Even people who don’t necessarily eat kosher come and are blown away,
they can’t believe it’s kosher. Our award-winning chef used to work for Prime Grill. Diners can even take a peek at some dazzling diamonds from Diamonds International in between courses – after all, who doesn’t want some diamonds with their dessert!” And what desserts they are, all created by the award-winning pastry chef, Felencia Darius. From mentoring his employees to making a difference in the world, Albert always finds time for others. Chanie Chriqui, the office director at the New York corporate office of Diamonds International, said that “Mr. Albert Gad has given me a great amount of experience and many opportunities. Just a few weeks ago we were raising money to help the Bahamian children after Hurricane Dorian struck. It was amazing to see how people contributed whatever they could to help our DI family across the seas. Being able to do these small acts of kindness is what really makes me feel empowered and proud to be part of this company.” With a team like this and more for both his diamonds and desserts, Albert has learned the recipe to living the sweet life! unplazagrill.com, opentable.com diamondsinternational.com

PAUL OAKENFOLD From World Class DJ to World Hospitality Award Recipient By Hillary Latos Photographed By Scott Ramsey
W
ith a fan base ranging from 18 years old to 50, Paul Oakenfold has been a pioneer in shaping the evolution of EDM (Electronic Dance Music). Considered to be one of the greatest DJs in the world, Oakenfold has provided over 100 remixes for over 100 artists including U2, Moby, Madonna, Britney Spears, Massive Attack, The Cure, New Order, The Rolling Stones and The Stone Roses. But not only is Oakenfold a music legend, he also devotes his time to major charitable initiatives as well. As no good deed goes unnoticed, Oakenfold’s philanthropic achievements are recognized this year as the recipient of this year’s World Hospitality Award at the annual American Group Travel Awards this December. Resident speaks to the legendary Paul Oakenfold about his latest projects and charitable work and also to Hotelplanner.com CEO Tim Hentschel on what it means to win this prestigious award, and the rapid international expansion of the Hotelplanner.com empire. Paul Oakenfold RM: Tell us about your latest charitable endeavors. PO: I’ve been working on SoccerAid in conjunction with UNICEF in the UK where we raise awareness
through soccer. It’s the biggest fundraising event for UNICEF in Britain where celebrities and soccer players come together. Last year we raised over six million pounds and I wrote the music and DJd a performance in front of the guests. One of the experiences was performed at the base camp of Mount Everest which was the highest show on earth. I hiked and climbed which was pretty difficult and we didn’t even know if the music would play at that level. We raised money for two charities out of the UK for children and music, and one local charity that raised funds for schools that were damaged by the earthquakes in Nepal. My demographic is 18 to 50 and when you play in clubs it’s a younger demographic but many of my older fans have grown up listening to my music. I also do a lot of charity work to preserve the English heritage sites where we bring awareness to some of the great sites around the UK to raise money for their preservation. I’ve DJ’d at Stonehenge which is 4,500 years old and one of the wonders of the world and no one has ever been allowed to perform there before. I recorded that performance which was called Sunset at Stonehenge which did very well. We’re looking at doing a few others in different locations.
RM: What does it mean to you to be the recipient of the World Hospitality Award this year? PO: I’m very supportive of what Tim Hentschel does and I love his work at hotelplanner.com and his charitable initiatives. I am happy to help him bring awareness to the causes that shine brightly for him. I think we are all in a stage in our lives where we are in a position to help support less fortunate people, and that’s what we like to do. It’s important to see his passion and belief in what he does. RM: What was the most memorable place that you have performed at? PO: I think it was the Great Wall of China. Recently I also performed at a really strange venue as well near Area 51 in the desert outside of Vegas. I was very curious and it was at a research center about 20 miles outside of the base for 1000 guests that were dressed as aliens. I hope it will be a yearly event. I never felt that electronic music had to only live in nightclubs, you hear it on TV shows, movies, it’s everywhere, so why not go to these wonderful locations and share music.

RM: If you could play in any location in the world, where would it be? PO: Any location that would shed light on the right causes wherever that may be. If we are raising awareness for climate change or if we’re making money for children in various charities I’ll go there. Put me in a rocket and I’ll go to the moon. RM: Which artists have been the most inspiring to you? PO: I think Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan, and Grandmaster Flash who were all pioneers and strangely enough all from New York. They were a generation before me and I certainly looked up to them. My favorite DJ is Argentinian, Hernan Catteneo out of Buenos Aires who’s been doing it for many years but also a great storyteller. RM: What projects are you working on now? PO: I’m finishing up on my new artist album now which will be done in the first quarter next year. I have some wonderful collaborations. My first single will be with Aloe Blacc. I’ve also been working with an orchestra for a TV show on Biohacking which is airing on Showtime. I’m actually traveling to my favorite US city- Austin and I go around 4 times a year, then San Francisco and Miami then it rounds up the year. CEO of Hotelplanner.com, Tim Hentschel RM: Tell us about the background of the American Group Travel Awards?
70 | resident.com
TH: It started in London where we held the Group Travel Awards over the last 40 years put on by Premiere Travel Media and Group Travel Organizer. When I was living in London I got to know the founder and he wanted to launch the awards ceremony in the US. We expanded into Europe and it celebrates the best in group travel. RM: How do you choose the recipient of the World Hospitality Award? TH: It’s based on two factors- one is bringing people together for a cause and the other component is their charitable work and influence by being a ‘lead by example’ good person. Paul Oakenfold has been in the music world for 30 years and at the top of it. He has longevity in a competitive industry and also collaborates with a lot of young artists to help the next generation while he exemplifies the values of our industry. Paul will also make the event memorable. RM: What can we expect this year? TH: It will have a different vibe as we will be in Miami thanks to you! This was actually your idea when we were speaking about this last year! Our executive team is based in Palm Beach and they went wild for it. This made sense since we used to fly everyone up from Palm Beach to New York in late November early December when everyone preferred to be in South Florida since it’s the best time of the year. Phantom of the Opera is also a sponsor and we kept all of the best of what New York had such as Broadway and celebrities, and
brought it to Miami. We are also capitalizing on the excitement of Art Basel Miami and South Beach in the height of the season. We are just going to gain momentum from the base we built over the last five years in New York. We will have Cairo Gold and The Wavies performing this year. RM: What are some of your new initiatives over the next year? TH: We just opened an office in Singapore and moved from Hong Kong and we have many new ventures. We just bought a company called venuexplorer.com.sg that brings venues and event planners together and we are also partnering with a Singapore company that specializes in “green” sustainable hospitality called greenview. sg. We just sponsored a Singaporean sports network channel that is like a martial arts version of the UFC called One Championship. What I noticed about living in Singapore is their toxic haze that comes from the burning of the palm tree plantations in Malaysia to produce palm oil. When all of the forests are burned at the same time it is very destructive and causes a lot of carbon and pollution in the air. I am also launching a green meetings initiative too as we are buying forests in Indonesia to offset the carbon footprint from any one that purchases group travel from us and this will also help this situation. americangrouptravelawards.com

THE LAW FIRM OF
AIDALA, BERTUNA & KAMINS By Bennett Marcus Photographed By Neil Tandy
Mary Hubbard for Angelo David | The Flex Brush | @Gammaplusna
“Yesterday I was at the Manhattan office and I had Alan Dershowitz on one phone line, I had Harvey Weinstein in the conference room, I had lawyers working on the rapper 50 Cent’s case, you know, all this high-profile, high-octane stuff in the public eye,” said attorney Arthur Aidala recently. “And I made sure to run out of there at four o’clock to get to my Brooklyn office at five o’clock to meet with an elderly man and some members of his family to try to figure out how to get them out of a financial mess.” Aidala, founder of the law firm Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins, known for taking on the highest-profile cases, has built a diverse practice, handling matters in corporate law, personal injury, real estate, civil litigation, appellate work and criminal law. The elderly Brooklynite’s business had fallen apart, and he and his wife were about to be put out on the street. “It’s not really something anyone in my firm does, so I took $10,000 out of my own pocket and hired another lawyer to help me on the case because I felt so bad for this guy and I’ve been very blessed to be fortunate enough to be in that position,” says Aidala. Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins is the firm that lawyers like Dershowitz turn to when facing legal problems,
but Aidala has made sure that it remains a place where locals go for routine legal services like will preparation and closings on home purchases. Aidala describes it as a boutique law firm with origins in Brooklyn but now concentrated in Manhattan that is big enough to handle the majority of legal matters that exist but small enough where a client would never get lost in the shuffle. “We really do the best we can for each and every client no matter who they are.” Right now, Aidala is representing a college student who got caught with a fake ID. “It’s basically you get written up for a ticket, but for him and his mom, who’s a 9/11 widow, it’s as big and as broad as the Harvey Weinstein case is for Harvey Weinstein.” The legal team thrives in this environment, and they all work together on cases, large or small. The environment within the law firm is family oriented. “Literally up until a year ago my father sat on one side of me and his best friend from high school sat on the other side of me, with my wife, Marianne Bertuna, as my law partner,” says Aidala. Staff members attend each other’s birthday parties, weddings and family celebrations. After working at home for a few days on a highly complex motion,
attorney Diana Fabi Samson said she missed coming to the office and couldn’t wait to get back and be around her colleagues. For Aidala, that was music to his ears. “That’s the biggest compliment she could give me.” Diversifying the practice to incorporate more than just criminal cases made economic sense. “It’s worked out because sometimes the phone is not ringing for the criminal cases but it’s ringing for the personal injury cases or the real estate cases,” says Aidala. But he also regretted that it limited the ways in which he could serve clients who had other legal needs. “I didn’t want to turn them away, so we learned how to do it.” And despite being a star trial lawyer, Aidala loves helping people, no matter their circumstances. “I really enjoy helping elderly old people or helping a young couple purchase their first home as much as standing in the well and having four courtroom artists sketch my picture as I represent [NFL player] Lawrence Taylor or any of these high profile-people,” he says. “Of course, everyone is a human being. Everyone has their own problems and their own issues, and I really enjoy it and take pride in representing all of them in various matters.”

ATTORNEY-AT-LAW
ARTHUR AIDALA ESQ. By Bennett Marcus Photographed By Neil Tandy
Y
ou may recognize attorney Arthur Aidala from his many television appearances, most prominently as a longtime legal commentator analyzing complex cases for Fox News, as well as on MSNBC, Fox 5, and New York 1. What you may not know is that the man you’ve seen on TV is one of New York City’s top trial lawyers, taking on some of the highest-profile cases making headlines in recent years. High profile cases His firm, Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins, is currently handling Harvey Weinstein’s criminal and civil cases and Alan Dershowitz’s federal defamation case and rapper 50 Cent’s civil litigation case. Aidala also successfully defended NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor, who was accused sexual misconduct. Another famous case that he won despite long odds was that of Brigitte Harris, who killed her father after he had abused her for years, and yet another was the crane operator in the fatal 2008 collapse in Midtown Manhattan. And he doesn’t take on high-profile cases for the notoriety. “I became a lawyer to help people,” Aidala says. In the Brigitte Harris case, he was so moved by her situation, that he not only worked pro bono, but also convinced all the experts who testified to
do the same, because she did not have the funds. “The facts of that case were so horrific, and it was very gratifying when we achieved such positive results for her,” Aidala says. “With the exception of time with my family, nothing really is equivalent to that feeling of gratification I get when I help a fellow human being in their most desperate time of need.” Wanted to be an actor Despite his spectacular career that started at the Brooklyn D.A.’s office, Aidala did not originally want to enter the legal profession. He really wanted to be an actor and studied theater in college at SUNY Purchase. However, Aidala ultimately decided to go to law school and follow in the footsteps of his father, a former Manhattan assistant district attorney. “Shortly after joining the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office, I got to fulfill my theatrical dreams by writing, producing, directing and starring in my summations at the end of trials,” Aidala laughs. “When you’re on a trial and you’re in front of twelve jurors, one of the challenges is to hold their attention. And a lot of the theater skills that I learned about bodypositioning and voice intonations and using your arms and your hands and your voice have definitely helped me in front of jurors and judges throughout the years.”
Ethics Aidala did not become a lawyer to gain wealth. “Anyone that becomes an assistant district attorney, does not do that for wealth or fame or fortune, and that was one of my initial forays in the profession and I loved it and I had tremendous role models there regarding ethics and morals and values.” His own father, with whom Aidala worked after starting his own firm, and late Supreme Court Justice Scalia, are among those who inspired his passion for service. Hopes to return to TV Aidala has considered running for public office, and been approached about applying for a federal judgeship, but realized he’s not ready to give up the practice that he’s built, his “little piece of nirvana,” as he calls it. After his Fox News contract ended, Aidala threw all of his considerable energy into building and broadening the scope of his law firm. Now that things are in place, he’s thinking about getting back on TV in some aspect. “I did enjoy very much that I was able to break down complex legal issues in a manner that was understandable and entertaining to a lay person, and I would like to do that again in some fashion.”

arianne Bertuna has been a lawyer for 17 years, and has worked alongside Arthur Aidala Aidala for 20 years, starting as an intern during her first year of law school and joining the firm as an attorney, three years later. Today, as a partner at Aidala Bertuna & Kamins, she specializes in a variety of cases, including, real estate, estates, and criminal defense, where she concentrates on DWI cases. And while Bertuna does work on the firm’s high-profile cases like those of Harvey Weinstein, Lawrence Taylor and Abe Hirschfeld, she is quick to say that they also represent many people who do not necessarily end up on the front page of a newspaper, including those who have been arrested for the first time and more often than not the only time, often younger people who are on their way to college or in college and going to graduate school and facing legal issues. “If you get arrested and end up with a criminal record it can impact your continuing to work or getting hired at all,” says Bertuna. The firm is known for dealing with those cases where someone wants to be an accountant or a lawyer or even a judge, or wants to go to law school or medical school, or to be a firefighter or teacher,

and they get into legal trouble. “I’m known for helping them get back on track and working out dispositions that don’t affect their career choices,” she says. “That is the part of my job I enjoy the most, because you’re able to help someone continue to be a productive member of society.” Start The first attorney in her family, Bertuna got the bug to pursue a legal career early, when she played the role of the defense attorney in The Scarlet Letter in a mock trial while attending Poly Prep high school. “Ever since I played that role in a mock trial in AP English I just knew I wanted to be a lawyer.” She studied business and French at Georgetown University, and worked in finance a bit while in college, but always knew she would go straight to law school after graduation. She interned with Arthur Aidala after her first year of law school, doing three trials back-to-back, and later interned at the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office where she got more courtroom experience, yet knew she wanted to be a defense attorney. “ It is one of those things where it’s inside of you; like a light bulb goes off and you have a passion for it. It’s knowing how to handle someone’s very sensitive
issues and be compassionate, empathetic and understanding, and that’s not for everybody.” Bertuna was drawn to working with Aidala because of his criminal defense work. There, she also had the opportunity to handle all of the real estate matters for the firm and she also created a niche in surrogate court work. After graduation, she became an associate, and eventually became a partner. Along the way, she and Aidala married, and now have a young son. Talking shop at home Yes, she admits with a laugh, they do talk about work at home. “But it’s okay. We really enjoy what we do, it’s not a job, it is our calling. So yes, of course we get home from work and we’re still speaking about our cases. but I am certainly not complaining.” Law associations Bertuna is a past president of the Columbian Lawyers Association, a member of the Brooklyn Bar Association, and a member of the New York State Attorney Grievance Committee, which is appointed by the judges of the appellate division.

on. Barry Kamins joined Adela, Bertuna & Kamins in 2015 after a retiring from the bench as a New York State Supreme Court judge. At the firm, Judge Kamins focuses on criminal law, and specializes in complex issues and cases involving complicated appeals, motions and other complex issues. Another area of Kamins’ expertise is professional responsibility; that is, representing lawyers who get into difficulty with the Bar Association or face disbarment due to the filing of complaints. He also represents law school graduates who have problems getting admitted to the bar. “It’s a sort of subset; it deals with professional responsibility issues, both people who have issues with the grievance committee and people who have issues getting admitted,” Kamins says. Career – State Supreme Court Justice During his tenure on the state Supreme Court, Kamins filled several important roles, including Administrative Judge of the New York City Criminal Court, one of the busiest courts in the country dealing with hundreds of thousands of cases every year. Kamins was also in charge of policy and planning for the New York State Courts. “In that capacity I

was in charge of developing a number of what they call “problem solving” courts,” Kamins says. These are courts around the state that deal with drug problems and mental health issues, an area of the court system that’s developed in the last 20 years. “With so many people with drug problems and mental health problems coming through the court system, the courts had to develop a new strategy for addressing these problems. “So, these courts were developed to provide treatment for these individuals.” The hope was that once they completed these programs they wouldn’t return to the system in the future. “They have been very successful.” Joining Aidala’s firm Kamins had known Arthur Aidala for years, through Aidala’s work at the Brooklyn D.A.’s office, the Bar Association, and through mutual friends. “He knew that I was retiring from the bench, and he called and said I’d like to talk to you about joining the firm. I thought it was a great idea. We met and that was it; I said I’d love to join the firm, so I started in January of 2015.” Teaches law, author For twenty years, Kamins has taught New York criminal procedure at Brooklyn Law School. “I love
teaching because you get to work with young people, their minds are engaged, they’re interested, and they have a lot of questions.” It keeps him on his toes, lest students ask questions to which he doesn’t know the answer. “It’s great. I really look forward each week to teaching.” Another thing Kamins loves is writing the book “New York Search and Seizure,” which he has been updating annually for the past 25 years. A treatise on fourth amendment law for New York, it’s used a great deal by lawyers and judges when issues come up involving search and seizure, search warrants, arrests, car stops, and the like. “It’s got about 10,000 cases in it now. It’s a lot of work but it’s very enjoyable.” He also lectures other judges on search and seizure. Studied under RBG As a student at Columbia, Kamins wanted to be an English professor, but soon decided to pursue a career in law, and attended Rutgers Law School where one of his professors was Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It was her first teaching job. “I thought she was fantastic, and I said to myself I’m sure she’s going to go places. I never dreamed where she was going to go. She was terrific. She was smart and engaging.”

ohn Esposito, a highly experienced attorney, joined Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins two years ago, specializing in civil and commercial litigation, appellate law, and all types of criminal defense matters, including white-collar crime. Prior to joining the firm, Esposito was a highly sought-after criminal defense attorney with his own private practice. Now, along with the broader services offered by Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins, he is also lending his expertise in the civil realm. “My own experience has been that people who’ve done a lot of criminal cases are able to do litigation of all types,” he says. He has also worked in tech, having been counsel to a technology company involved in asset protection and disposition.

Started at Manhattan D.A.’s office, (Supervised Aidala) Esposito began his career at the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, prosecuting misdemeanors at first and working his way up over seven years to work on homicide and other serious criminal investigations. “It was a very difficult position to get,” he says. “It’s considered probably the top local prosecutor’s office in the United States and I was very excited about the opportunity.”
“We’ve always stayed close personally as well as professionally, and I think as Arthur’s firm was growing, it posed an opportunity for me to finally join up as partners, and that’s what we did.”
As a Criminal Court Supervisor in the Manhattan D.A.’s office about 30 years ago, a brash young man named Arthur Aidala was assigned to Esposito’s unit as a summer intern. Esposito became his supervisor, and they remained close friends ever since, and have worked together through the years, even after Esposito started his solo practice.
Racetrack aficionado In his spare time, Esposito loves to follow horseracing. “It’s my little pastime to get away from everything,” he says. He is currently working on projects involving the ever expanding legalization of sports betting.
Special Counsel to the New York State Court Officers Union Esposito is special counsel to the New York State Court Officers Union, representing union members faced with criminal charges or disciplinary matters.

ichael Jaccarino joined Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins in 2013, working with founder Arthur Aidala in defending individuals charged with high stakes criminal cases - including white collar crimes such as securities fraud, identity theft, money laundering and commercial bribery, as well as all kinds of violent and narcotics related offenses, including shootings, robberies, firearms possession, murder, and racketeering. He is a distinguished defender and trial lawyer. Over the last several years, he has secured a string of acquittals for clients in various types of cases and jury trials all over the city. Jaccarino started his career as a prosecutor in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office. “That job prepared me for any possible courtroom situation,” he says. “It helped me to become a successful trial lawyer. I’m comfortable in any courtroom on any kind of case. Whether it is in front of a judge or jury, my courtroom advocacy has helped client after client achieve unparalleled results. Beginning my career as a prosecutor allowed me to hone my craft in the courtroom, and I now use those skills as a criminal defense attorney.” This courtroom trial background, Jaccarino adds, is what makes Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins special. “Everyone at our firm is the real deal. Our attorneys are well known thorougout the state, and they command respect in every courtroom. They are known as some of the best lawyers in the field. This confidence, combined with the skills
to back it up, allows us to get those who we defend out of difficult situations.” Jaccarino functions as Arthur Aidala’s righthand on every case, working behind the scenes while Aidala is often the public face. “I’m the one in the trenches, in the criminal courthouses of this city every day of the week, figuring out how we are going to be successful with each one of our cases and how we are going to help each one of our clients.” Jaccarino’s philosophy stems from his strong belief that everyone deserves a second chance, and that “most people should not necessarily have to suffer for the rest of their life for one mistake.” He embraces the philosophy that a defense attorney’s job is to zealously defend – at all costs. “If I don’t do that, I’m not doing my job,” he says. 18b Panel attorney Jaccarino has been assigned by the city of New York to the 18b Panel, a group of private lawyers who defend certain people who cannot afford an attorney but are unable to use a public defender for various reasons. “I often get a called by judges to take difficult cases to trial.” New baby, music lover Jaccarino loves music and has recently taken up drumming, saying that he has no musical background and is loving the challenge of learning a discipline that is completely different from the law. However, at the moment, all of his spare time is being devoted to his 7-month-old daughter.

artner Imran Ansari leads the civil practice at Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins. Like others in the firm he is a former prosecutor, but he now specializes in civil litigation, including personal injury cases, commercial and contract litigation, and employment and civil rights litigation - both on the plaintiff and defense side. Ansari is currently representing renowned attorney Alan Dershowitz in a defamation case, rapper 50 Cent in a civil dispute, and Harvey Weinstein in civil matters, among other high profile cases. “We have a great civil practice which is growing exponentially,” says Ansari. “When I joined the firm in 2015, we were already very well-established in criminal law, and the goal was to build a civil practice with the same stellar reputation - in just four years it’s already there.”
82 | resident.com
A TV background Ansari studied broadcast journalism and began his career as a television producer at Court TV working on a live legal commentary show and then a show covering the legal side of the entertainment industry. He left New York to work on major film productions in Europe, and while working in Iceland, he applied to law school with the intent of becoming an entertainment lawyer. While in law school, an internship at the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office totally changed the course of his career. He fell in love with criminal law and what he calls the “theater of the courtroom”, finding that a lot of the skills he’d developed as a TV producer translated well into the courtroom. “I realized that the entertainment background actually complemented my skills as a trial attorney in the courtroom in many ways, particularly in my delivery to the jury.”
He served as an Assistant District Attorney from 2008 to 2014, and joined the firm shortly thereafter. Work-Life Balance With a newborn and a 3-year-old at home, Ansari juggles a busy schedule handling high profile cases, trials in court, and being an active board member on a bar association with finding time to be with family. “My son happened to be born at a time when some major things were happening on some big cases, as the civil partner, I had to be there to handle them. Needless to say, I’m not getting much sleep these days!”

iana Fabi Samson’s experience in a range of legal areas have been put to good use at Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins, where she concentrates on civil and criminal litigation, commercial and appellate law, and probate and estate administration. “I’ve definitely worked on a lot of different types of cases just in the past year, since joining the firm,” Samson says. Right now, she’s been working on two large criminal defense cases, including the Weinstein case, and civil antitrust litigation, so she’s been flexing those muscles a lot recently. “I don’t know how it’s going to pan out after these two big cases are completed; I may well be doing more civil litigation.” The firm is well known for its criminal defense practice, so Samson thinks Aidala likes the fact that she enjoys working on the civil side, as well. Start: Manhattan DA’s office Like most of the attorneys at the firm, Samson started her career as a prosecutor, at the Manhattan
D.A.’s office. “It was a great experience. I started in the appeals bureau, and I had the opportunity to work on some big cases while I was there, which was exciting, and I learned a lot.” She worked on a white-collar criminal investigation that was an offshoot of the BCCI investigation, and also on the prosecution of El Sayyid Nosair, accused of assassinating Meir Kahane. Adjunct professor at the University of Toledo Law School; stay-at-home mom Samson left the D.A.’s office when her husband had to relocate for work, and among several moves, one was to Toledo, Ohio, where she taught at the University of Toledo Law School. More moves followed, and with four children, she decided to spend some time as a stay-at-home mom, raising her family.

As part of the Connecticut probate panel, she was appointed to represent people in all kinds of situations, which got her back into the courtroom again. Practicing on her own, she felt limited in the kinds of cases she could take on, wanting to have an affiliation with a firm to garner more sophisticated work. One of Samson’s sisters had worked with Arthur Aidala at the Brooklyn D.A.’s office and introduced them. “It’s been a great fit for me. I love everybody there, and we do a lot of interesting, fantastic work. It’s exactly what I was looking for.”

Meet Mohamed Moutaz Al-Khayat, the Syrian-Qatari businessman, turning his business and philanthropic sights to the West – and the face of the new generation of contractors. From building mega malls and five-star medical facilities, to supporting war-displaced refugees and training construction tradespeople and unskilled laborers to support workers, Moutaz has fast emerged as one the wealthiest and most philanthropic players on the planet. Across the peninsular Arab country, Moutaz is known as something of a self-made entrepreneur and businessman striving to explore new business frontiers with economies of scope strategy not only to sustain businesses but to provide clients with cutting edge and total solutions. He currently owns and manages more than twentyfive companies in multiple fields spanning design management for resorts, hotels, malls, and residential

His industrial project portfolio encompasses everything from retail and real estate development to medical, food, and beverages and beyond. Under Moutaz’s tutelage, UCC has ascended in recent years with the creation of more than 40 affiliated companies that bolster the company’s core business in the Qatari market and numerous other touchstones on the globe. UCC now operates not only in Qatar but also in Morocco, Oman, United Kingdom, France, and the Maldives – with plans of expansion. And although his jet-setting life in business leadership is a world away from his homeland, which for the past eight years has been ripped apart by war and bloodletting, he still brings the Syria he profoundly loves to the diaspora and curious palettes. But beyond his ever-expanding empire of hotels, restaurants, architecture, and resorts – all of which are frequented by Hollywood heartthrob’s and powerful political figures – the cause closest to Moutaz’s heart is his Alkhayyat Foundation.
The primary focus of the foundation’s work is to partner with organizations that provide critical services to vulnerable individuals and families in Canada and the United States of America. THE DIGITAL FUTURE SUMMIT Bitcoin, Blockchain & Disruptive Tech By w. a. muller
T
he future of Bitcoin, a cryptocurrency, is looking bright. This decentralized digital currency can be sent user to user on a peerto-peer network without intermediaries such as a single administrator or central bank. In its evolution, it has been criticized for its price volatility, high electricity consumption and possibility for illegal transactions. However, Bitcoin’s market growth thus far has been tremendous, with an all-time high market cap close to $230 billion. While Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies may be more well-known, the technology behind it – Blockchain – is the real revolutionary innovation. The bitcoin blockchain is a public ledger that records bitcoin transactions. On Blockchain’s secure ledger, a network of nodes, digital events are shared between all parties who participate in a business transaction with the parties’ identities protected by cryptographic encryption. On November 12th, CLC Global Advisors will host notable industry experts and prominent members of the investment community at The Digital Future Summit at The Yale Club in New York City. ANGEL ONUOHA BLK Capital Management By Daniel Metz Edited by Carlos Lacayo
L
ast month, BLK Capital Management hosted its 2019 Conference in New York City. Members from across the country gathered for networking seminars, keynote speeches from sponsors, and diversity panels, as well as a stock pitch competition. The all-black, non-profit hedge fund’s CEO, Angel Onuoha, 20, called the conference one of the “marquee events of the year” for the fledgling fund, founded in 2017. Not bad for a kid who isn’t old enough to celebrate the event with a glass of champagne.
Harvard University For Onuoha, projects like BLK Capital Management are vital for more than just the experience. “(Homogenous financial teams) just don’t perform as well in terms of actual outcomes and output,” he says, “it doesn’t really make sense to have one aspect of the community managing the money for an entire diverse population.”
Student-run Hedge Fund Onuoha first conceived of BLK Capital Management during his freshman year at Harvard, following a summer internship at a smaller investment bank. He didn’t see many people who looked like himself--young, black men--during his internship. When he reached out to two of his friends, they told him that they’d had the same experience. Their impressions weren’t surprising. A recent study by the Government Accountability Office showed that African-Americans are massively under-represented in the financial services industry, with a growing gap in the last decade. In other words, Onuoha and his finance-focused friends were outliers. Together, they set out to change that. They founded BLK Capital Management, an all-black, non-profit, student-run hedge fund to teach financial tools and literacy to black college students across the US. 70 Schools Across the Country Today--with Onuoha as the CEO--BLK Capital Management manages $100,000 with the help of 175 students from more than 70 schools across the country. Onuoha shares leadership with a 10-member board of directors, all students who have gone through the program and have shown interest in the position. Students go through an education program with assignments and readings to learn investment and then buy and sell real stocks with real money. “The strategy that we play is the long/short hedge fund strategy,” says Onuoha, “where we typically look to buy from smaller companies so we feel like we can have a little bit more of an advantage.” Onuoha’s path wasn’t always certain. Before college, his mother wanted him to become a doctor. He was considering a chemistry major, but his heart wasn’t in it. Instead, he went into finance. “What I liked about finance particularly was the quantitative aspects of it,” he says, “I always loved math, and I’ve been raised into solving big problems, and I thought finance was a great way to do it.” As he grew, his understanding shifted, and so did his major, to economics and computer science. “I didn’t feel like working in a large finance firm was the best use of my talent,” he said, “I’m always very passionate about having a large impact in whatever I do. When you’re working in a big corporation, it takes a long time before you get to start calling the shots.”
88 | resident.com
With BLK Capital Management up and running, Onuoha took a break between his junior and senior years at Harvard to work on a side-project, a start-up which he is currently keeping under wraps. He still runs the hedge fund and plans to return to college for his senior year as soon as his new project comes to fruition. blkcapitalmanagement.org

CHRISTOPHER RIM Command Education By Bennett Marcus
C
ommand Education is one of the country’s leading education and college consultants, with a 96% success rate of getting their pupils into at least one of their top three school choices, and a 100% success rate in their students being accepted into college. The service is unique in that many of its counselors are recent Ivy League graduates and those who haven’t can still boast prestigious universities, so they have all recently succeeded in the college admissions process and truly understand the current landscape. Being closer in age to the students they advise, Command Education’s highly trained “near-peer” counselors are also able to serve as a bridge between parent and child. Their aim is not just to help the student get into the best college, but to help them to identify the schools that are the right fit, in which they will thrive. They help students to focus their energy on what they are truly passionate and excited about. Not the best student but got into Yale Christopher Rim founded the company in 2015 and graduated from Yale in 2017. That’s not a typo; he started the firm while a college student. He is now 23. Jersey, his guidance counselor told him he would never get into Yale. “I didn’t listen to him,” says Christopher. “I said what’s the worst that can happen, I lose the $70 application fee? If I didn’t try, I would regret it. So, I tried my best on the essay, I talked about what I was passionate about, what I was interested in, and that, I think, resonated with the admissions officers at Yale.” He was the only student from his class to get in.
but those are often things they are forced to do rather than what they are passionate about. “I realized, let’s start a little earlier, help the students experience different summer internships, different projects.”
After that, others in his high school reached out, asking him to review their applications and essays. Once at Yale, he and two other students started a pro-bono program to help low-income New Haven residents with the college application process.
One example: a student whose only interest was video games, according to his parents. Christopher talked to the student over time, and the kid realized he liked the design aspect. “I helped him get a volunteer opportunity with this non-profit looking for a graphic designer, and he started learning how to do that and use the software. And he realized he truly loves design, and we kind of got to that through video games.”
“I firmly believe that education should be open and accessible to everyone,” says Christopher. Many succeeded, getting into schools like Johns Hopkins and Stanford. “Through that experience I realized I’m actually pretty good at working with students and motivating them and inspiring them through this process.”
Small pool, customized program and mentors The company only has around 24 clients at any time, although their fees are reasonable compared with many other firms in the field. “We try to keep it at 24 only because it’s really the quality, and there is no standard plan for everyone. Everyone’s path is customized.”
Start early The majority of students start with Command Education in 9th grade. He found that many were writing essays about their piano and violin lessons because they thought colleges wanted to see that,

SOFIA SYMONDS Model & Beauty Influencer By Bennett Marcus 350k Instagram Followers Sofia Symonds is a model and beauty influencer with over 350,000 Instagram followers. Instagram.com/SofiaSymonds The New York-based Moroccan-born influencer began posting about fashion, makeup and skincare just for fun. “It was something that I always liked to do, even when I was a teenager in Morocco, I was always giving people advice on what they should use for their skin. So it was something that I naturally loved.” With her audience growing, Sofia is now taking it more seriously and concentrating on building her brand. How Sofia Did It Her large Instagram following grew organically, even though, busy with work and life, her postings were sometimes irregular, depending on her class and work schedules. “I was just posting, and I noticed that people started to follow me. They asked me where I got this dress, what do I use on my skin, what do I use on my hair,” Sofia says. “Back then I would just take a random picture; I wasn’t really paying attention. Now it’s not random. I will think about it. I will think about the outfit, my hair, makeup. I’m more self-conscious about what I am posting.” Morocco, Miami, L.A. & NYC Sofia originally moved to Miami, where she spent three years, working and modeling. Her next step was L.A., where she took acting classes, and also blogged and posted on social media. She had some success with fashion sponsorships, and now, in New York, she is working to build on that momentum. Sofia has had partnerships with beauty brands including Sugarbear, which she describes as like gummies for hair; Refa, which are rollers to tone the skin on face and body; and RevitaLash, a serum for lashes, among others. Many brands reach out to her, but Sofia only works with brands that she actually uses and believes in. “I only recommend things that I really like, and my followers see me using every day.” Maxim, L’Officiel & Grazia Morocco Sofia will appear on the cover of an upcoming issue of Grazia Morocco. Another cover, this one for a major European magazine, will be out in coming months, but she could not yet reveal the title as of press time. She has also been featured in Maxim, and in the French fashion magazine L’Officiel. Homemade Beauty Products: Sofia makes all-natural homemade beauty products with knowledge she gained by researching ingredients. “I know, for example, bananas and avocados make hair shiny. ” So, while she does buy a lot of beauty products, she also makes scrubs, masks and creams herself. “It’s about ingredients that I feel has really worked in my own experience,” she says. “I give them to all my friends, and they love it. They always call me to make it for them.” YouTube & Makeup Line Sofia is going to start a YouTube channel this year where she can post more structured makeup tutorials, with more detailed explanations than is possible on Instagram. The next logical step will be to develop her own line of makeup. “In time, I want to launch my own line when I have created a strong base of supporters who will want to buy it. ” Her new goal is one million followers

HIFF HITS!
Five of the best entries to this year’s Hamptons International Film Festival By Norah Bradford
T
he Hamptons International Film Festival (or HIFF) is one of the great movie festivals of the year. Whilst the Festival des Cannes often represents one end of the spectrum before the summer lull and Toronto’s TIFF represents the other - industry players getting into gear ahead of the screening and campaigning efforts to secure a Golden Globe, BAFTA or Academy Award early in the new year. HIFF fills an important niche, bringing the New York influencers to a more-relaxed Hamptons to show film and catch up. Amongst the field of highquality entries, five caught our eye as movies to view and people to watch going into the 2020 Awards season; The Human Factor A must-see documentary by Dror Moreh charting the challenge of seeking a peaceful mediation of the long-standing conflict in the Middle East for Israel and its neighbors through a series of unique interviews with American negotiators in the run-up

ISABELLA DEL FRATE RAYBURN Collector & Art Advisor By Bennett Marcus Rome & New York Isabella del Frate Rayburn is an art consultant and collector who has had an extraordinary career in the art world, both in New York and in Italy. She got her start serendipitously as a young Roman, while looking for a job. A friend’s husband ran a publishing house specializing in art books, and had just opened a gallery. “So, why not? I was young, I was just beginning,” she explained from her home in Rome.
Celant and Rayburn decided to republish the book now because Italian art is again very much in demand in the U.S., and they’d received many requests to reprint it. Celant suggested also writing the story of Isabella’s foundation, about her life and collection. This book became volume II. Together, the books provide comprehensive history of Italian art in the US 1948-2018. “It’s extremely interesting for anybody who wants to look into what’s been happening this last 50 years regarding Italian art.”
Working at the gallery, Isabella became friendly with the leading Italian artists of the 1960s and 70s Burri, Afro, Paolini, Accardi. “I started to learn and to love art through their eyes,” she says. “Through their eyes and their teaching, they really showed me my way, my career, and it was very exciting.”
Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo, NY University On October 24, the book was presented at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome. On November 21, the books will be presented at the Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo, of NYU, with a panel including Celant, Emily Braun – art historian and curator of the 2015 Burri retrospective, Laura Mattioli of CIMA, and Giorgio Spanu, who recently opened Magazzino Italian Art Foundation, a museum to house his collection of art in Cold Spring, NY.
Warhol, Basquiat, Burri, Twombly, & Motherwell Eventually, after six years, Isabella went out on her own, starting a small art consultancy in Rome, working with artists and collectors. In the mid 70s, she went to New York, to negotiate an important art deal for the Vatican Museum. After that, she made twice-yearly trips and became more involved in the New York art world befriending dealers: Castelli, Gladstone, Nosei, Sonnabend and Angela Westweater. Eventually she moved to the U.S., and married her late husband, Murray Rayburn, in 1982. Meanwhile, she’d been building her own collection since the 1970s, and made wise investments early in the careers of renowned artists like Twombly, Warhol, Basquiat, Motherwell and many other blue-chip artists. She and her husband founded the Murray and Isabella Rayburn Foundation, which had originally funded cancer medical research, and added a cultural arm dedicated to promoting Italian and European artists in the U.S. After Murray’s death in 1985, Isabella continued with the Foundation opening exhibition space in the Fuller Building in 1988 where for the next five years she organized exhibitions of Italian artists: Fontana, di Dominicis, Burri, Afro and Novelli, culminating in 1993 with exhibition “Roma New York 1948-1964” curated by Germano Celant, who is today the artistic director of the Prada Foundation in Milan. The Rayburn Foundation also sponsored numerous exhibitions of Italian art including the “The Italian Metamorphosis” at the Guggenheim in 1994, and Morandi exhibition at the Tate in London. New Book: Before/the Murray and Isabella Rayburn Foundation/After Now Isabella has just published a two-volume book set called “Roma - New York” and “Before /Murray and Isabella Rayburn Foundation / After” both written and edited by Celant. The first volume is a reprint of a book published in 1993 to accompany the exhibition “Roma-New York 1948-1964” curated by Celant at the Foundation. This important exhibit explored the relation between Italian and American art in the 1950s and 60s, when there was a great exchange between the two countries. Americans like Rauschenberg, Twombly and Kline were traveling to Rome at the time, while Italians like Burri, Afro and Scialoja were in New York.

Advising Collectors These days, Isabella sells and buys, adding to her extensive collection of Italian as well as American artists including an impressive number of female artists (Amer, Wangechi Muttu, Teresita Fernandez, Rina Banerjee, Mickalene Thomas, Paola Pivi, Hayv Kahraman). She also advises collectors through her own advisory company IDF Art Consultants. “I have a very good eye,” she says. “I really bought very well all my life; I bought very early paintings that became important. So collectors trust my eye and they trust my taste and come to me for advice.”

MONICA WEBSTER Holding on to Her Home Court Advantage By julie sagoskin
W
hen it comes to finding the perfect property, Monica Webster of Douglas Elliman will turn your real estate dreams into reality. She has worked in the industry for nearly two decades, and currently focuses her business on New York City, Westchester and Connecticut. Before taking on real estate, Monica worked as a magazine editor focused on home décor. Her passion for design and architecture led her to real estate, where she now represents new developments in Manhattan and historical homes north of the city. After living in New York for eighteen years, Monica explains that “now is the time to buy, as inventory is high and interest rates are low.” In fact, in the third quarter, Westchester has seen increased sales in the $700,000 to $900,000 price range – average for the area. Additionally, there has been a drop in mortgage rates due to SALT, causing more activity throughout Westchester and Fairfield counties. Whether it’s a young family looking to transition to a home with more space in the suburbs, or empty nesters ready to downsize, Monica navigates the market with ease for her clients. Douglas Elliman provides her a competitive

edge, as she’s able to cross-boarders and serve all communities without the constraint of exclusive contracts. With this flexibility, Monica keeps offices in Midtown Manhattan, Scarsdale and Greenwich. Monica is also part of Douglas Elliman’s Sports and Entertainment, a curated sales division that provides an elite level of real estate brokerage services for athletes, celebrities and ultra-high net-worth individuals. Most recently, Monica sold famed quarterback, Chris Simm’s Greenwich home.
When she’s not mastering the market, Monica is a proud mother, and can be found visiting her daughter, who is blind and lives in DC, where she is employed by Deloitte, with her not for profit efforts as the President of National Association of Blind Students. She is also a proud fan of the University of Virginia, where her son once played lacrosse.
Beyond the traditional, desirable areas to live in such as Greenwich, Chappaqua, or the Upper East Side of Manhattan, buyers have been attracted to smaller towns such as Riverdale in the Bronx and Darien and New Canaan in Connecticut. These alternative areas offer attractive opportunities to save on taxes and get more house for less. There’s also a noticeable shift in design throughout the suburbs. Right now, Monica is seeing “black framed floor-to-ceiling windows, wired banisters and an emphasis on exterior lighting in gardens and around pools.” In New York City, it’s all about amenities in new developments. For example, Monica describes “a dog run in the building, private pools, golf simulators, exclusive boxing and barre classes, etc.”

JON FISHER Living his Best Financial and Family Life By julie sagoskin
H
-- his latest venture, CrowdOptic, is known for its augmented-reality technology. But Jon, who is living his best life, is already living the dream – no virtual reality needed!
After cofounding and becoming CEO of three startups -- all owned by leading Fortune 500 companies
Aside from embarking on successful entrepreneurial endeavors, Jon is deeply dedicated to ensuring that he does all he can to make this world a better place for his 9-year-old daughter and future generations and is even on the Biden for President Finance Committee.
e might be known for building successful companies, but more importantly, Jon Fisher knows how to build and maintain strong family bonds. After all, according to Jon, the amount of quality time he is able to spend with his wife and young daughter is the true measure of his success.
Let’s just say that Fisher has found his way in Silicon Valley and wants to spread his message that it is indeed possible to achieve financial success without sacrificing family values. “I live in a small seaside town, and I’ll take this level of success and level of consciousness within my network, whereas so many millennials are conditioned to be great even if it means jeopardizing everything for your build. If this message can help some guy who is more talented to be more of a human being, I’m happy,” explained Jon.

“If this message can help some guy who is more talented to be more of a human being, I’m happy.”
After delivering a commencement speech at the University of San Francisco, the video of Jon speaking went viral and has since been viewed by over one million people. In fact, Jon’s impactful message keeps on resonating and gaining an even broader reach. According to Jon: “Everybody wants to be Elon Musk, but you can still get to a high level of success without getting to that level. In this world we’re living in, I’m trying to project a bit of a refreshing message out there. It’s something that I’ve practiced for a long time. I’m just trying to be a person in Silicon Valley. You can change the world and live under the radar and still feel like what you’re doing is super rewarding. My wife and I recently celebrated 17 years of marriage and I volunteer dozens of hours a week at my daughter’s school. The reason I joined the Biden for President Finance Committee is because he strikes me as a very good human being. I just want others to know that they too can be happy both in their career and in their family life. This is the first time that I’ve jumped into something politically like that, I just feel that we’ve reached the point of no return. If we can create an army of people doing this in the Valley and in Hollywood and in professional sports, we can turn things around, or at least slow the onslaught.” Jon keeps stepping up his startup game and has gained the attention of many influential investors along the way, including the former president of Oracle, who was one of Jon’s earliest investors. At one point, John Elway even invested in Jon’s technology and put it in Bronco Stadium. “I say my companies look just like a Seth Rogen movie,” explained Jon. “He doesn’t build blockbusters or go crazy with budget. He makes content with few resources -- like the way I build startups with few resources.” By creating patents and jobs, Jon is indeed doing his part to make this planet a better place. In fact, you can find Fisher named on over a hundred patents! CrowdOptic, which is already a crowd pleaser, is helping to revolutionize the athletic and medical fields. With CrowdOptic’s technology,

surgeons are able to train for medical procedures without having to be in the field. “I love the inventing part. Our software allows medical professionals and salespeople to work on things remotely rather than flying around. Whether it be in hospitals or teaching physicians, you are selling billions of dollars in medical devices and you must install these devices as a function of compliance and train others. When it comes to building a startup, I make sure not to waste time and resources. A lot of people fail trying to raise too much money and being too aggressive.” Jon explained that the reason why he is able to remain successful while staying committed to his family is because “we are a long-standing and cohesive team. I’ve invented and founded these companies with the same core engineering team, and same co-workers. The joke around here that is we consider ourselves a less good-looking, legal, married-with-children version of the Oceans 11 team. We’re building good companies and selling them to other companies. Running a company is a lot like exercise -- it’s discipline. Thinking of something in your head and then seeing it practiced is super special. It’s the path of least resistance when it comes to making a contribution to the
world. We’re building software that’s going around the world. If you work this way you can put family first, even in a cut-throat industry like this. I have a lot of free time because we have different satellite offices and don’t really have to commute. We’ve been together for so long that we automatically know what we have to do.” This mentality of maintaining a flourishing and functioning family life while being financially stable is all part of the Fisher family philosophy: “I think I got it from my dad. He’s a particle physicist at Stanford and PhD there. He came into my room when I was 12 or 13 and was honest about appreciating talent and greatness. He instilled in me the belief that you can self-actualize a lot of your happiness and see where you fit in in the world. He passed on to me that you can avoid the traditional pitfalls of disdain by this self-actualization process.” The forward-thinking Fisher, who has authored Strategic Entrepreneurialism -- now required reading at a number of top MBA programs -- also explained that “operationalizing companies is a great way to create a successful company without being overfinanced. Just look at WeWork as an example of what can happen. People refuse to be
students of history. There were 500 photo sharing companies at one time but only a few have made it. It’s really this herd mentality and it’s a shame to see the mistakes we’ve all gone through happening over and over again. I think we’ll see a shift from the whole founder aura to more scale managers coming in. These bigger companies that come in with so much money really exacerbate all that’s wrong with the Valley. It really is a message that more entrepreneurs and inventors need to learn about and understand. It’s a statistical impossibility that everyone is going to succeed.” Jon truly practices what he preaches in the hopes of showing others how to progress both personally and professionally. This dedicated dad even bikes with his daughter to school every day. “We use electric bikes and look at all the traffic passing by. It’s really a metaphor that if she can think creatively, she can bypass certain things in her life. We all have to do a bit more than what we’re doing. In California you pay ten times as much for a house in the Hills and people can’t get power. That’s a spooky thing. This climate thing might be at people’s door already.” crowdoptic.com

SANTINO FONTANA Star of TOOTSIE: The Musical By Tamsen Fadal
B
ased on the 1982 film starring Dustin Hoffman, but with some updates for 2019, TOOTSIE: The Musical has been on Broadway for eight months and it’s still going strong. Stepping into those high heels and red sequins every night is Santino Fontana, the TONY-Award winning star of the smash hit TOOTSIE: The Musical. I had a chance to interview this new dad for Broadway Profiles with Tamsen Fadal. I got to see the show a few months ago, it’s one of those laugh out loud shows. It’s really rare to be in a show where the audience erupts in laughter like that. There are several moments in the show where the show is stopped because people are laughing. Does that let you know that something’s going right up there on stage - does that give you more momentum or what does that do to you? It’s a great reminder that although it’s not new to

us there are people out there who are able to laugh at it because they have not heard it before and they are able to enjoy the way we did when we first read it. Talk about the changes that had to be done after you first read it because everyone’s familiar with the movie, but this is different it’s not a soap opera first of all – it’s a Broadway show. A lot has changed since 1982 so Robert Horn, the book writer who won a TONY this year for best book, adapted the script to bring it up-to-date to today and I think he’s done a great job of capturing (we‘ve all done a great job, I think, of capturing the spirit of the movie) and also of telling it in a new and different way. So that people will see a show and feel like ‘Oh yes, I remember the story’ and yet it’s a completely new fresh take on it. You are not watching a movie on stage – you are watching a musical that belongs on Broadway.
So, what’s it like to dress like a woman? Well – you know! (joking) You know better than me now. Why do you own shoes that are 5 inches tall? I don’t know, I ask myself… Stop it. I’ve always respected women but my respect for women after doing this show has gone through the roof! Is it the nails, the waxing, the heels, what is it? Well -- let’s talk about the waxing. I mean “what”? The pain is one thing I can deal with the pain. My question is: you have to let it grow out awkwardly for 3 weeks? Yes, you have to ‘look bad’ for a little while and then you fix it. Why don’t you just shave it?

We just hope you don’t notice… No, it’s not for us it’s for you. So, the answer is I’m shaving, not waxing Talk about your changes backstage. There are eight people backstage I run off stage and it’s like a pit crew. One’s on my hand doing my fingernails, we’ve taken press-on nails and Angelina Avellone who is the makeup designer came up with this idea that we use top stick on them so I’m able to put them on and take them off really quickly. How many changes do you go through? Twenty-seven. They’re very fast. There is one I don’t even know how you did it in the gown. Yeah, I’m in an old-timey nurse’s outfit and then I spin around and then I’m in a 50’s dress tight fit with shading for cleavage (another trick)…and

that doesn’t come off because it’s alcohol based so I constantly have this darkness on my chest that looks like I’ve been beaten up – in fact it’s there right now.
I read about Bernadette Peters helping you to find a hairstyle? My grandmother had red hair and I was in HELLO DOLLY for a brief stint last year and I kept staring at Bernadette all the time. And when we were going through wigs I was like “I think I should be What’s it like being a lead playing two characters? I think this is what actors dream of to play a red” and Paul Huntley the wig designer and William PLAYBILL.COM complicated part where you’re playing multiple Ivey Long our Costume designer asked “Well, what people that are completely contrasting and the do u want to look like” and I said I think I want to challenge of figuring out how to sing more like a look like Bernadette 100% - she looks amazing! woman is a huge challenge And, now Dorothy Michaels looks amazing too. You Favorite celebrity backstage visit so far? can see Tony winner Santino Fontana and the rest of Carol Burnett - easy. Then, Michael Keaton and the cast of Tootsie: The Musical eight times a week at Billy Crystal came on the same night that was the Marquis Theater at 210 W. 46th Street NY, NY 10036 pretty great. Broadway Profiles is executive produced by John Gore, Tamsen Fadal, Matthew Hege and produced Dustin Hoffman? Not that I know of. It must be strange for him. I by Keith Hurd was in ‘Frozen’. I don’t go to ‘Frozen’ and hang broadwayprofiles.com out. Like, it’s weird.

PAGANINI HONORS PAGANINI Tribute Concert at Carnegie Hall By Lillian Langtry
M
aría Elena Paganini hosted and presented, “Paganini Honors Paganini”, a tribute to her ancestor Niccolò Paganini, famous virtuoso violinist who received the nickname “the violinist of the devil”. The historic concert event took place at the elegant, intimate, and timeless Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, New York City. Niccolò Paganini’s compositions of diverse works, including violin concertos, sonatas for violin or guitar and violin, and the 24 caprices were performed by five highly accomplished violinists accompanied by the piano. For the first time a relative of this great violinist performed a tribute in his honor.

Performers for the event were: Music Director/ Violinist Edmond Fokker van Crayestein, Violinist Elly Suh, Violinist Stefan Milenkovich, Violinist Kevin Zhu, Violinist Sabrina Vivian Höpcker, and Pianist Jochem Geene. The difficulty of the compositions presented a significant challenge to these artists, although being professionals, were able to project the emotion and the internal fire that Paganini transmitted. Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin started the evening with a special introduction. The tribute concert was the first stage of a tour that foresees visiting cities on different continents in the year 2020 under the name “Paganini Honors Paganini.”
