A LOVE AFFAIR WITH NEW YORK “There are roughly three New Yorks. There is, first, the New York of the man or woman who was born here, who takes the city for granted and accepts its size and its turbulence as natural and inevitable. Second, there is the New York of the commuter — the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night. Third, there is the New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something. ...Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness; natives give it solidity and continuity; but the settlers give it passion. ” E.B. White
Our other cover story is the gorgeous supermodel Joy Corrigan. Born and raised in a small town in North Carolina, this Southern belle had big dreams that extended beyond rural life on a farm. She was discovered at a young age, and her modeling career has led her to Victoria’s Secret, Playboy and Sports Illustrated, amongst others. At only 22, she has launched her own clothing line, as well as a charity that helps endangered species. She even has plans to pursue a career in acting—there is nothing stopping this down-to-earth beauty. Fashion was our theme this month, so we covered our favorite trends spotted on the catwalks during New York Fashion Week. Dreams really do come true as evidenced in the fairytale wedding of Latvian model Simona Kubasova and Raj Prakesh, which took place at the breathtakingly beautiful setting of Villa d’Este on Lago di Como.
My love affair with New York City began when I was 13, which led me to move to the city when I was 17 to attend NYU. As I look back, this was probably the most important decision to make as a teen, and it was a decision that would determine the path of the rest of my life. New York City is a place that can sweep you off your feet, and in my opinion, it is the best city in the world. This adoration for the city reverberates with our cover story, Trudy Jacobson. Having launched a multi-million dollar Fortune 100 company from scratch with her husband in Kansas, Trudy Jacobson epitomizes today’s modern woman, calling this phase of her life “Next in the City.” After a successful career and raising a family, Trudy made the bold move to reinvent herself and pursue her dream of living in the city. She considers New York City to be her second home where she can live life by her own rules. Her advice is to be true to yourself and to live this one life you have to the fullest.
This month, I traveled to Belgrade in Serbia—this place should be on everyone’s travel bucket list. It reminded me of Prague in the early 90s when it still felt like a secret that hadn’t yet been discovered by hordes of tourists. This stylish capital city has a cool hipster vibe with its café culture and vibrant nightlife. Another bonus is the cost of living is 1/3 the price of the rest of Europe. Go there now before this undiscovered gem becomes gentrified with chains and developers. Every day, there is something new to discover about this great city we live in, so get out and reignite your love affair with NYC.

With one of the strongest editorial teams in the business, and a solid, hard-working sales force, we are witnessing the Renaissance of print and all it has to offer. Running around New York to a number of engagements and meetings allows me to gather the information I need to produce this magazine. Because we speak to so many of our readers, we have firsthand knowledge of what you want to read about and see in these pages. Under the strong editorial leadership of Hillary Latos, we are producing editorial that meets my high standards and is work I can say confidently represents what it means to be a resident of this great city.
Come stay where many revolutionary dignitaries and influential guests have slept, such as George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Marquis De Lafayette.
I know my column has been absent these past months. I was entirely focused on producing a quality publication and revving up the brand. Now, I feel it is time to take a moment to thank you, our loyal readers, for sticking by us, for supporting us with your comments (keep them coming!) and most importantly, for using us as your guide to the finest things in life! GULLS COVE CONDOMINIUM Exclusive Club-Style Amenities
A
s the 429-unit Gulls Cove luxury condominium building in downtown Jersey City nears a complete sellout, the developer has unveiled a spectacular new array of club-style amenities that lifts the property’s unique lifestyle to new heights. The sprawling two-story social space features a Fitness Studio equipped with Peloton bikes and a dedicated Yoga Studio, a Club Room with a bowling alley, shuffle board and screening area; a sophisticated Resident’s Lounge furnished with deep velvet tufted sofas and club chairs ideal for socializing; and a children’s playroom equipped with modern toys and classic books. Residents also enjoy 24-hour Concierge service.
20 | resident.com
By GEORGE Cahn The new amenities come online as Gulls Cove’s final homes – including a limited collection of duplex and triplex residences – have been released for sale. “We’re thrilled to have added this substantial amenity offering to Gulls Cove which we believe creates a fun, socially-interactive atmosphere for our residents,” said Art Johnson, vice president of Liberty Harbor North LLC, Gull’s Cove’s developer. “The amenities are an extension of the homes, and we’ve designed the spaces to encourage everything from quietly relaxing with a glass of wine to enjoying a spirited game of bowling or shuffleboard to rejuvenating the body and mind with a work-out. It’s the type of lifestyle experience today’s buyers are looking for.”
Gulls Cove’s unique quality of life also stems from its creative approach to living spaces, particularly the building’s multi-level duplex and triplex residences which combine the appeal of a brownstone with the modern finishes, amenities and services of a new luxury condominium building. The homes offer some of the largest layouts found within Gulls Cove, as well as a number of special features exclusive to the offering. The two-story duplex homes include private street entrances and 13-foot ceiling heights on the first floor of the two-bedroom floor plans. The expansive three-story designs feature three bedrooms, oversized balconies creating desirable outdoor entertaining space amidst dramatic City views,
and private parking spaces in an enclosed garage with direct access to the home. What’s more, the residences are attached to the overall Gulls Cove condominium building, meaning residents also have access to the building’s 24-hour Concierge and full suite of modern amenities and services. “Unlike older brownstones with narrow footprints, low ceilings and dark interiors, these are newconstruction residences outfitted with modern finishes and appointments and a more open, loftlike feeling,” Mr. Johnson points out. Priced from $1,269,000, the duplex residences feature an open floor plan in the main living area, two bedrooms and three baths spread throughout 1,680 square feet of upscale living space. The luxurious and chic triplex homes are priced from $1,569,000 and feature three bedrooms, three baths, 2,155 square feet of living space, and an outdoor terrace with breathtaking views that spans more than 350 square feet. Two of the three
bedrooms in the homes are master suites with large walk-in closets. Traditional studio, one- two- and threebedroom residences at Gulls Cove are priced from $450,000. Some homes feature dramatic views of the Manhattan skyline or Liberty State Park, while all residences are well-appointed with elegant finishes, upscale appliances and contemporary design details. Ornate touches such as 5” engineered hardwood floors provide each residence a touch of understated luxury, while topof-the-line appliances such as Bosch dishwashers and Bosch washer/dryers augment the day-to-day functionality of each home. Gourmet kitchens include Eggersman cabinetry, quartz countertops and backsplash, Kohler fixtures, a Bosch French door refrigerator and a Bosch gas oven with fiveburner stovetop. Designed by Marchetto Higgins Stieve Architects, Gulls Cove comprises two buildings connected by a ground-level row of public retail and
private amenities. The community is located at 201 Marin Boulevard, directly across from the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail station, and a short walk away from the Grove Street PATH station and NY Waterway ferry service to Manhattan’s Pier 11/Wall Street. The Holland Tunnel, New Jersey Turnpike, Route 78 and Routes 1 & 9 are all easily accessible. Residents also appreciate the proliferation of art and culture that has blossomed in the neighborhood in recent years, as well as an eclectic offering of restaurants and shops, including unique attractions such as the Zeppelin Hall Beer Garden. Vibrant neighborhoods such as Grove Street and Paulus Hook are just blocks away, each offering their own local charm, ambience and dining options. Jersey City’s scenic Hudson River waterfront walkway is also nearby, as is the Morris Canal, home to multiple marinas and yacht clubs. gullscove2.net

LA AMADA Wishㄱes Can Come True By joshua estrin
P
eople visiting the upscale resorts on Mexico’s historic northeastern Caribbean coast often wish they could stay year-round. Now those wishes can come true at La Amada, a private community of luxury residences with its own marina, private beach, miles of bike paths and walking trails, a spectacular Greg Norman-designed golf course, and easy access to scuba diving or snorkeling at the world’s second largest coral reef. Nestled in a resort community located between a three-kilometer stretch of white sandy beaches and the Chacmochuc Nature Preserve, the gated community of La Amada is the only residential offering in the master-planned community of Playa Mujeres. The destination lives up to it name, which translates to “the beloved,” as residents enjoy a varied and upscale array of on-site amenities, as well as access to all of the nearby attractions, restaurants, and shopping of Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. Eight distinct buildings house unique residences, with terraces boasting spectacular views of the surrounding lush lagoon, nature preserve, golf course, and serene beaches. One, two, and three-bedroom condominium homes are available, all well-appointed with features including marble floors, solid wood trim, optional designer furniture, stainless countertops with under mount sinks, and custom wood cabinetry. Bathroom amenities include frameless glass shower enclosures and luxurious stone countertops. Private outdoor areas feature large private terraces or garden patios, rooftop decks on select penthouse homes, and private gardens on ground level homes. Perhaps Mexico’s best kept golfing secret, La Amada boasts an 18-hole, par 72, Greg Norman signature golf course acknowledged as one of the best courses in Mexico. The property recently unveiled an array of additional amenities including a new fitness club, rooftop pools, an upscale gourmet food shop, and an exquisite new Beach Club. The Kids’ Club provides a fun distraction for youngsters while adults lounge poolside, and a new fully stocked market and coffee shop are planned for the very near future. Approximately 118 residences are now offered for sale, with prices ranging from the low $300,000’s to $1.3 million USD. La Amada is a perfect combination of ownership with all the benefits of resort living for anyone who wants a pictureperfect second residence or income property.ㄱ

O
riginally from a small rural town in North Carolina, Joy Corrigan is a 22 year old supermodel on the rise. Her natural All American beauty and enviable physique has landed her in the pages of the Sports Illustrated, Playboy, Maxim, as well as Victoria’s Secret. From the catwalks of Miami Swim to the catwalks in Paris and New York, Joy Corrigan is globetrotting the world and setting the fashion world ablaze. But at heart, this Southern Belle remains grounded with her small town Southern values and devotes her free time to the Jade’s Vine Foundation to help save and protect endangered species of plants and animals. How did you begin your modeling/acting career? I’ve always had a love for art. When I had the chance to incorporate my creativity into my career by creating stories through film and images, I jumped at the opportunity! What do you love the most about it? I love traveling the world and meeting new and interesting people. Most of my best friends I have met while traveling, living in Europe, other parts of America, Australia and South Africa. I love
having friends from around the world and feel my outlook on life has changed for the better though experiencing their diverse cultures. Growing up in a small town, I now have a new-found appreciation for different foods, architectures, traditions, religions, and languages.
She might not know that much about my industry, but she always gives me the best advice on everyday relationships and life in general. She tells me to always follow my heart and live my dreams to the fullest. So that’s what I’m doing!
Tell us why the cause is so close to your heart? I really wanted to make a difference through my career and encouraging others to make a change has always been something I’ve held close to my heart. Since recently learning that many plant and animal species are endangered and close to becoming extinct, I’ve been even more passionate about raising my voice and helping to make a difference.
When you aren’t modeling what is your personal style? I love to dress comfortably and sporty and consider my style to be fun. I try not to take myself too seriously when it comes to fashion. Instead, I use my personal style and everyday looks as a way to express myself. What are your favorite places to go out in the city? Baby Grand is great for a glass of wine and Karaoke. I also love to visit Flowershop in the Lower East Side, it’s a hidden gem for sure. For amazing Ramen, you’ll have to try Ivan Ramen, and my favorite cheat meal is a huge slice of Artichoke pizza! During the day you can typically find me riding my bike across the Williamsburg bridge, browsing through Whole Foods or getting a coffee from one of the Blue Bottle Coffee Shops!
Who are you inspired by? I’m really inspired by my grandmother, she is always my go-to person for advice on just about anything.
How do you think social media has helped your career and reaching out to fans? Social Media has been a great way for me to showcase
How did you come about starting your charity? The Jade’s Vine Foundation is a charity I started to help save and protect endangered species around the world. Animals and plants have always been a passion of mine, especially since I grew up on a farm in North Carolina!

and market myself. Now we have more control than ever on how we are perceived in the public eye, and for models and actresses, it gives us an opportunity to show our interests, hobbies, and passions in photos and videos! It’s also a great way for me to stay in touch with my friends and family! If there was anything you could change about the industry what would it be? I would love to see more diversity throughout the industry. From the models we see on magazine covers to the most watched video series, all ethnicities, sizes, sexes, colors, cultures, and ages should be portrayed as beautiful. It would be the best change for our industry today! What advice would you give to an aspiring model? Never Give UP! Show kindness and love to the people around you. Where are you traveling to next? I’m traveling to Paris next week for fashion week! I am super excited because France is one of my favorite cities, especially if I’m in the mood for some fries or macaroons! What is your fitness/ nutrition regime? I typically eat a plant-based diet high in good fats such as avocado and nuts. I also try to avoid sugars and drink lots of water throughout the day. I always stay super active on a daily basis, so after I squeeze in a few classes during the week, I’m still getting good cardio on a regular basis by taking the stairs or walking a few extra blocks. Some of my favorite classes in the city are Rumble boxing, Shock Therapy, and F45 Training. Another secret I use is adding MCT oils to my coffee in the morning (bulletproof coffee) for added energy. Also, I try to add a Cryotherapy (House of Cryo) and Sweat (Sweat House) session a few times a week! What would you like to do after modeling? Right now, I’m working on my own clothing line called Naked Species! It’s an eco-friendly fitness line that gives back by donating a portion of the profits to protect endangered species! So, stay tuned! I’m also submerging myself into auditions and acting classes, so I can really sharpen my acting skills and transition into being a full-time actress. In the next 5-10 years, I will passionately be pursuing my career as a full-time model, actress, designer, philanthropist, artist and occasional chef!

TRUDY JACOBSON Next in the City By HILLARY LATOS Photographed by Udo Spreitzenbarth Photographer Assistant: Carolin Hohberg Stylist: Mona Sharaf Stylist Assistant: Thereza Reboucas
H
ailing from the heartland of America, Kansas City native Trudy Jacobson along with her husband, has successfully built one of America’s largest trucking companies and is now set to conquer New York City. A sharp businesswoman and philanthropist, Trudy is the epitome of today’s modern woman who has mastered the art of living a balanced life of business and pleasure. Her boundless and effervescent energy can be seen in everything she approaches from serving as the Chairman of the Board of TransAm Trucking to all of her philanthropic endeavors. As she peers out over her windows from her Plaza Penthouse overlooking Central Park, Trudy is ready for her next phase of life in the Big Apple which she endearingly refers to as being ‘Next in the City.’ How did you get started in the trucking industry? My husband’s family had a successful Fortune 200 trucking company, National Carriers, which was attached to a meat packing and cattle feeding business. The more I learned about it the more I wanted to be a part of it. He was a workaholic so it was better to work with him rather than not seeing him as

much. When I started working in human resources where I was responsible for hiring and training drivers, it opened up a whole world for me. It was so exciting and I loved it, putting the loads together on the trucks and making it all work at the end of the day. I was part of the team. The only thing missing was that I didn’t know how to drive a truck or what the very people I was hiring were experiencing. So I knew if I really wanted to do a good job I had to learn how to drive the 18 wheelers. That was the biggest and hardest adventure I had. For several weeks I drove around picking up and delivering loads, and learning how to pull refrigerated and grain trailers as well as tankers. I had to learn how to pull offal and byproducts. It was also a different sensation to pull a tanker with liquid because it sways with momentum vs hauling a refrigerated van with boxes. An empty trailer can also go all over the road depending on the cross winds. You never knew what to expect and handling this huge truck and trailer was just an unusual experience, you have to be alert. Grain trailers were used to haul bone and blood meal to animal feeding plants
and the driver was expected to sweep out the trailer and that aroma was a sensation that you will never forget for the rest of your life. I learned to respect that drivers had to do this all the time. I would never have dreamed that I would have that opportunity, but to be authentic and respected it was important for me to learn how to do this. We would spend two weeks every summer driving long hauls and delivering loads of meat from Kansas to Hunts Point, New York and then pick up another load to get to Michigan and go cross country. At the time there were no cell phones or GPS, you had to use a road atlas. After a delivery, you also really never knew where you were going, just that you were going somewhere, and it was a very liberating feeling to travel the US. There’s a lot of stimulation on the road, the constant noise of the engine, music in the background, chatting on the CB radio to other truckers, it was like being in a chamber of noise all the time but it propelled you and kept you stimulated, until you knew it was time to sleep.

I drove off and on for 8 years at National Carriers which was later sold to a New York buyer in 1986 at a time of junk bond and corporate takeovers. That left us with a sizeable amount of money. My husband John was still young and a workaholic, so he and I moved to Kansas City and started a new business called TransAm Trucking in 1987. I am still a half owner and Chairman of the Board and I try to be as involved as I can. Shortly after we started the company, our son was born and that is when I decided to become a full time mother, which was a hard decision to leave the company on a day to day basis. That changed my life in a lot of ways because it couldn’t help but diminish my involvement in the trucking industry. I was released on an integral part of managing the company. As time went by I was gradually phased out. I still had the title but men ruled our company, yet I will always love the trucks, and being in them and around them. When you own the company the equipment is your biggest asset. What are some of your philanthropic endeavors? I was on the board of the Kansas City Jewish Community Center for nine years where I applied my skills as a business woman to help build it into a meaningful and strong organization. This was one of my fondest times in leadership. My main priority now is to be involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, because someone in my family has this. My other charity is the Veterans Community Project which started
in Kansas City by veterans who found a need to help other homeless vets. They built 30 tiny homes on tracks of land with manicured lawns and also have social services in the community project to help the veterans assimilate once they’ve met their needs. It’s starting to expand into other cities and it’s an amazing project. I also enjoy being a patron of the arts and theater in NYC. I am hoping to start a foundation to write grants for aspiring artists. What made you move to New York? I call this phase of my life ‘Next in the City.’ I had traveled to NY many times and I could never get enough of it, there was never enough time spent here. My time was over with the Jewish organization and I was wondering what I would do next. A lot of people own second homes so I decided that this was where it was going to be. Even if I do nothing here, I would still be a thriving person. I just love the atmosphere, the excitement and everything about it. This life is unlike the life I had anywhere ever. I’m a girl from the Midwest and I made this decision and had nothing holding me back. I love it, there’s something exciting going on all the time, and the first thing I do every morning is look at Central Park from my apartment. How do you make it work in business with your husband? It’s been a lively story in Kansas City, especially amongst the men. We decided mutually that my move here is a good thing and this is a good time. He loves where he is with the office and we have
a home there. We are different in some respects because he doesn’t like the city. As far as the business partnership I haven’t been as involved as much over the last 10 years as I had been. For me the best thing is to move on and find something else and if I can’t find it here in NYC I can’t find it anywhere. But I will always be tied to Kansas City. It is my home and where I am still a full time resident. Our friends say that they have not seen either one of us as happy as we are now. What are some of the biggest life lessons you have learned along the way? Always be authentic, be who you are no matter what. You can’t be as happy as you can be by living behind a mask if you are living a life that is not suitable to you. Be willing to take that risk at any age. Always respect others whether you are the boss or part of the team, because you should never take anything for granted or your importance so seriously so that people don’t admire you for who you are as a person. Living with a chronic auto immune disease is bad but it’s not the worst thing in the world because as time goes by you have hope and faith that there will be a cure. Treat your body well and health is the most important thing in life. You can have all of the money in the world but without good health what is the difference. Be mindful, open minded, and take care of yourself.

LA PULPERIA
Classic Latin American Fare with Flair By Tripp Whetsell Photographed by Udo Spreitzenbarth

iㅉth over 10,000 restaurants serving every conceivable cuisine, it’s hardly surprising New York has long been considered the food capital of the world. On the other hand, finding that perfect gem that combines an aesthetically inviting atmosphere with an eclectic menu and diverse drink options can still be a tall order even though plenty of places exist. One of these is La Pulperia, a contemporary Latin and Argentinian-themed restaurant with two locations in Hell’s Kitchen and on the Upper East Side offering all this and more. In fact, for inventiveness alone, it may just be the best of the lot. First opened in Hell’s Kitchen in 2014, in New York’s dining destination Restaurant Row (West 46th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues),
the name and concept were adapted from the general stores found in rural parts of South America that first rose to prominence in the late 1800s and also functioned as central meeting places and drinking establishments. La Pulperia’s website describes it as a “cockteleria and restaurant featuring rustic Latin cuisine.” However, don’t let such labels, its name, nor the signage or string of white lightbulbs adorning the outside entrances of all two locations fool you because its décor is anything but rustic. With interiors by designer Andres Gomez whose other restaurants include Red Rooster, Whitehall and SoCo, La Pulperia incorporates such eye-catching features as red-leather tufted banquettes, reclaimed Brazilian wood on the ceiling and walls, handcrafted

Mexican floor tiles, and abundant shelving that prominently displays wine, fresh produce and a wide selection of liquor. The co-owners Victor Medina and Carlos Barroz, who also serves as executive chef, are originally from Mexico and Argentina respectively. However, Medina quickly dispels any misconception that La Pulperia only offers Mexican and Argentinian food because of their heritage. “I’m Mexican and Carlos is Argentinian, so it was normal to expect that we’d either open a Mexican or Argentinian restaurant,” Medina says. “However, that wasn’t even a consideration. Our goal from day one was to be different and to provide something to New Yorkers they can’t find anyplace else.” The result is a veritable cornucopia of seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes that accentuate the diversity and contemporary culinary influences of Latin America, Spain, Italy, the United States and even Russia and France.
Among the most popular items are starters and entrées like El Salmon Brûlée: Verlasso salmon tartar, fromage brulee, strawberry and ginger leche de tigre and micro bull blood greens; Cazuela de Pulpo: Spanish chorizo, carrot puree, green peas, pickled red onions and mole poblano; Shrimp Ceviche: avocado mousse, coconut flakes, red onions and aji Amarillo leche de tigre; Las Tablas: grilled proteins, including pulpo (octopus) and hanger steak, accompanied by five seasonal “cazuelitas,” or side dishes. Proteins include pulpo (octopus) and hanger steak; Pacu Fish Ribs: Grilled Brazilian fish ribs, orange chipotle BBQ sauce and coconut rice; and Moqueca Mixta: Squid, shrimp, mussels, white fish, scallops, soy beans, Spanish chorizo, bacala, green coconut rice and dende oil. For dessert, there are delicacies like the Mezcal Chocolate Mousse made with Riazuleno Classico Juven, olive oil flowerless cake, popcorn toffee, expresso crumbs and 24-carrott edible gold flakes. For those who prefer a more tangy taste, there’s the Mango & Lychee Tres Leches, a citrus flavored sponge cake topped with coconut mousse and sake
soak, with a dollop of whipped cream, white shavings, mango and lychee pico de gallo. Another thing at the heart of what sets La Pulperia apart is the drinks. In addition to traditional sangria and margaritas, as well a wide selection of bottled and draft beers, wines and traditional top-shelf spirits like gin, vodka, scotch, whisky, tequila and rum, they even have mixologist crafting a miscellaneous assortment of specialty cocktails. Must-tries (at least once) include La Pulperia UES: Raizul tequila, fresh pineapple, lime juice and volcanic lava salt rim; the Upper East Side Lady: strawberry infused gin, elder flower liquor, lavender nectar and gold flakes; and The Smokey Room: house mescal and milagro, passion fruit puree, fresh pomegranate juice and agave nectar. On weekends meanwhile, guests can add a bit of Latin spice to their brunch with exotic fare like Lobster and Baked Eggs seasoned with fresh herbs, crema de blue cheese, fresh cream and truffled scented toasted bread; the La Pulperia Omelette with caramelized onion, roasted red peppers, tomato

confit, Chihuahua cheese, a side order of home fries and house salad; and Tortilla Espanola, a Spanish style omelette with potato confit, onions and a choice of cheese or chorizo. There’s also an ample selection of weekend-only specialty cocktails—including Unlimited Brunch Cocktails for $25 per person during Saturday and Sunday brunch on the Upper East Side from noon to 4:pm, as well You Only Live Once (YOLO) mimosas for $25 each. And besides eating and drinking, there are abundance of ways to enjoy La Pulperia for entertainment and educational purposes. For example, on the Upper East Side, which also delivers, there is live jazz every Monday evening along with ladies night on Tuesdays from 5:pm to 7:pm. The Hell’s Kitchen location also hosts a ladies night during these hours along with a drag brunch on Sundays. Other activities include private mixology and cooking classes by appointment and a live DJ on Mondays through Fridays from 4:00pm to 8:00pm during happy hour. As for Medina and Barroz, the co-principals’ collective backgrounds are just as noteworthy and unique as
La Pulperia’s menu and extracurricular offerings. Having each immigrated to the United States in 2000, both cut their respective culinary teeth with a myriad of assorted jobs in various restaurants in New York and Miami. With one thing leading to the next, in 2008 they eventually met and became fast friends after they were hired at a popular Mexican restaurant in Manhattan, with Medina ultimately becoming a general manager and Barroz working as a sous chef.
decide to open my own restaurant, Carlos will be the guy to do it with because number one he’s a great cook and number two he already knows what to do because he’s in the business,’” Medina recalls. Since first teaming up together a little over five years ago with La Pulperia, neither of them have looked back. “For me, Carlos created the magic of the business, not only with the cuisine, but in the way he thinks out of the box with specialty dishes like fish ribs,” Medina says. “I call that natural talent.”
Soon after, and with his self-confidence bolstered by a glowing review of the Mexican restaurant that featured his picture in The New York Times, Medina embarked on the path that would ultimately lead to the creation of La Pulperia. Barroz took the first entrepreneurial leap in 2009—opening two restaurants in Stone Harbor, New Jersey, The Taco Shop and Quahog’s Seafood Shack—which he still owns. The latter was even featured as a segment on Guy Fiere’s popular Food Network series Diners, Drive-In’s and Dives, which Medina discovered randomly discovered while channel surfing one afternoon.
Going forward, the pair is looking ahead to additional locations, with their newest one slated to open in central New Jersey sometime in early 2019. They’re also continuing to expand and experiment with the menu, always injecting an element of surprise that Barroz says is one of his favorite parts of the enterprise.
“From that moment, I said to myself, ‘if I ever

GABRIEL KREUTHER A Haute Haven By CHRISTOPhER A. PAPE
I
n the Patheon of fine dining, New York City ranks amongst the highest of global cities, for who can compete with the breadth and depth of our fabulous offerings? From alto Italiano offerings like Del Posto to sushi-dens like Sushi Yasuda, New Yorkers have an embarrassment of riches, which makes the arrival and success of Gabriel Kreuther – one of the most delicious and innovative spots I’ve eaten in years – even more newsworthy and exciting for those in need (or in want) of haute cuisine. Helmed by The Modern’s ex-chef and bearing his name, the restaurant is a temple to the cookery of modern French cuisine. Over nine stunning courses, my guest and I were treated to a wonderment of food; here, it’s okay to feel like a glutton. But before I lay out each course (or at least attempt to with my limited skillset), mention must be made of the dining room and bar. Clearly, much

attention was paid to detail. Each table offered a beautiful vista of floral arrangements, woods and calming décor in which to enjoy one’s meal. In addition to the atmosphere of a luxury liner, the staff were both professional and perfectly familiar, in the friendliest way (a rare feat), which made my guest feel welcomed and cocooned from the outside world.
To say each dish was made with skill, care and thoughtfulness would be a criminal injustice to the quality of taste and sensory experience we enjoyed. From a roasted Maine lobster served with scallion creama, rye cracker and champagne sauce to a Black Angus beef tenderloin with a saffron-fennel marmalade, strega and ginger emulsion, each dish highlighted the quality and freshness of each ingredient, while each ingredient
was in harmonious balance with the other. The beef, in particular, was cooked to rare perfection. One of the standout dishes for us was the Australian lamb rack in hay stack. Here it was served with Castle Valley Mill’s polenta, black truffle coulis and sauce barigoule. I love a properly cooked lamb, and this was one of the best I’ve ever had. The barnyard flavor of the hay and the creaminess of
the polenta matched well, and who doesn’t love black truffle coulis? Dessert and wine were excellent additions to the meal. The wine, especially, was carefully paired for maximum tasting pleasure.

cuisine of Hunan Province. Hunan Slurp does not adapt its food to Western interpretations of Chinese food; it serves only the authentic flavors of Hunan Province, whether it is a rice noodle dish or one of their hot plates, such as Whole Fish with Homemade Chopped Chili Sauce or Ribs in Black Bean Sauce. Heavy sauces are unheard of here. Hunan Slurp uses only fresh ingredients that complement each other and plates its dishes in a way that allows diners to mix the ingredients in any combination, amount and order that they please. Chef Wang “aims to present Chinese grassroots’ everyday meals in an artistic way, while keeping the flavors true to the region’s humblest dishes.” Despite what the name, Hunan Slurp, may suggest, this Chinese restaurant is not just a noodle shop; it also serves flavorful cold and hot plates, such as Hunan Salad, made with Grilled Pepper and Eggplant, preserved Duck Egg, Soy Sauce and Sesame Oil Dress-
ing or the Fish Fillet, which is simmered with Chinese Sauerkraut, Enoki Mushrooms and Glass Noodles. Such dishes play an integral part on the menu. influences from both French and Italian cultures. Tall, bold red walls, accentuated by a yellow-gold ceiling, and decorated with artistic reproductions of Italian Neo-Romantic paintings and gold gilt framing, provide a luxurious backdrop to the dining experience. Additionally, blue leather seats, satin arm chairs and black plush velvet couches are coordinated throughout the restaurant creating little nooks for each diner to feel like they are in a world of their own. A grand, floor-to-ceiling “Metropolis” bar gives the casual dining restaurant an air of magnificence making Lea a classier alternative to New York City’s downtown mega-club and bar scene. New partner and Executive Chef Bobby Dickert will continue to bring his masterful craftsmanship and culinary business savvy to “The Original” Bobby Van’s Steakhouse.
In addition, bringing his superior taste and masterful craftsmanship to an already perfected selection of menu options, is 40-year steak veteran Tommy Hart. This just so happens to be a full circle moment for great friends Ricky Pasarelli and Tommy Hart, who met as young men in the 1970’s working at Smith & Wollensky. The two friends have seen great success in the culinary business; owner Pasarelli of Bobby’s Vans Steakhouse and Tommy Hart – rising to the top of the The Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group, Inc. chain. With all-new developments, Bobby Van’s Steakhouse “The Original” remains an unprecedented contender in the New York City restaurant scene. Frequent diners and newcomers alike can expect the same flavor-filled USDA prime quality beef, aged to perfection, which is now served at the beautiful restaurant-front, Lea Wine Bar, and by the best of the best Executive Chefs Victor Chavez and Bobby Dickert plus steak veteran Tommy Hart. Dos Caminos Every New Yorker should be required to dine at Dos Caminos at least once. Few, if any, of the Big Apple’s Mexican restaurants can compete with Dos Caminos’ menu and ambience. The menu, though, is what sets Dos Caminos apart from other New York City restaurants, Mexican and non-Mexican alike. We started with the Shrimp Guacamole, which was richer and more savory than any guacamole I’ve ever had. Next was the decadent Ceviche sampler, featuring a delightful assortment of tuna estilo japones, red snapper de la calle & camarones apasionada. We wrongly thought the rest of the meal couldn’t possibly compare with those two dishes. The Mole Short Ribs may have been the best dish of the night; the slow roasted ribs were melt-in-yourmouth amazing. This was followed by the Camarones en cazuela,

BELGRADE, SERBIA The Hidden Gem of the Balkan Peninsula By HILLARY LATOS
T
hough Serbia may sometimes be phonetically confused with other countries, such as Syria or Siberia, which are not even geographically close, it remains a hidden gem of Europe. What was once part of the Yugoslavian kingdom, Serbia remains landlocked and largely misunderstood compared to its neighboring coastal countries of Croatia and Montenegro. The capital city of Belgrade has a lot to offer visitors, from its friendly and
74 | resident.com
laid-back English-speaking inhabitants, historical architecture, and world-class vineyards, to its vibrant nightlife, hipster neighborhoods and favorable exchange rate.
What to See The gritty beauty of Belgrade lies in its authenticity. Communist era buildings sit alongside historic Belle Époque architecture that now house independent boutiques and cafes.
The best way to experience the city is by foot, as most attractions are within walking distance. Start at Belgrade Square located in the center of the city, which houses Belgrade’s most important monuments: the National Museum, the National Theater, and the Statue of Prince Michael. This leads into the central pedestrian street, home to international brands and lined with charming cafes that are great for people-watching, as the café lifestyle is part of Serbian everyday life. Visit
the beautiful Church of Saint Sava, one of the largest Serbian Orthodox churches in the world. It prominently dominates the Belgrade skyline and has withstood the many wars Belgrade has experienced. Dedicated to Saint Sava, one of the most important religious figures of medieval Serbia, this is also where Sava is interred. For some of the best views over the city, venture to the Belgrade fortress in the Kalmegdan Park, which rises high above the confluence of two rivers: the Sava and the Danube. Originally built in the second century, the fortress has been destroyed and rebuilt over the last sixteen centuries, epitomizing the fortitude and strength of the Serbians who defended their city against the Romans, Turks and Austro-Hungarians. Across the Sava River is the Museum of Contemporary
Art, which houses a broad collection of artwork dating from 1900 that was produced in Serbia and in the former Yugoslavia by many artists unknown outside this region. With the many parks and rivers that cut through central Belgrade, Serbians enjoy a high quality of life outdoors. From day to night, locals congregate along the shores of the beautiful Ada Lake, known as Belgrade’s seaside, where they spend hours swimming, sun tanning and dining at alfresco cafes. This peninsula is nestled within a forest of natural floral and fauna, providing a peaceful oasis in the city. We recommend the nautical-inspired Smokvica Ada, a popular farmto-table Belgrade chain, offering an extensive international menu with plenty of lounging beds to enjoy the day.
Where to Dine With the favorable exchange, dining out is relatively inexpensive compared to the rest of Europe with most entrees priced under $10 and a glass of wine under $3. Being a landlocked country, traditional Serbian cuisine is very hearty and largely meat focused. Experience the Old World charm of Serbia at Kafanica, set in a charming wooden cottage in the Kosutnjak Park in the outskirts of Belgrade. It will transport you back in time to a medieval countryside village where you will enjoy delicious local cuisine with hearty portions of BBQ’d meats and national dishes like veal soup. One of the biggest attractions of Belgrade is the Bohemian quarter of Skadarlija. Similar

One of the best Italian restaurants in Belgrade is the chic modernist Communale Caffe e Cucina—a great place to grab a drink or Italian wine, or to indulge in homemade pastas and grilled seafood with a killer tiramisu. A favorite local restaurant and lounge is the alfresco bi-level Voulez Vous restaurant in the elegant Mitrovica neighborhood—another great place for people-watching. The international menu serves a variety of Mediterranean specialties along with contemporary Serbian cuisine. Further Afield To view beautiful preserved Belle Époque and Art Noveau architecture with Hungarian influences, venture north to the town of Subotica and be sure to visit the local synagogue known for its striking architecture. HELSINKI’S BASTIONS AGAINST THE COLD Art, Contemplation, & Sauna By Ashley Seashore

inters in Finland last 200 days and often hover in below-zero temperatures. While this might make Finland’s most famous export, Santa Claus, particularly jolly, for the majority of Finns and visitors alike, it means constant retreat from the bone-chillingly cold, sunless days. But hope is not lost, for the Finns have cultivated several notable indoor options that satisfy the mind and the body.
A subterranean opus: Amos Rex In 2016, the Guggenheim Foundation had Helsinki in its sights as the next location for their string of museums. After heated public debate, the Helsinki City Council voted against building the museum, leaving the Guggenheim flummoxed but the Finnish quite proud. Buoyed by renewed

local interest in Finland’s place in the modern art world, the Amos Rex opened in August 2018 with much fanfare. Amos Rex, the newest of Helsinki’s modern art museums, is located in Lasipalatsi area in central Helsinki, a historical site built by two architecture students in anticipation of the 1940 Olympics. Lasipalatsi was supposed to be a temporary structure but was preserved as an example of functionalist architecture. Because of this standing, it was impossible for the museum to build in any way that would alter the beloved structure. So they built under it. Altering only the terrain of the square in front of Lasipalatsi, the museum added smooth mounds
of texturized concrete, each one capped by a glass skylight into which passersby can peer down into the museum’s depths. From below, museum dwellers can look up and see silhouetted faces gazing down. There are 24,000 square feet of exhibition space to explore, including the opening exhibit by Japanese art collective teamLab, who installed a temporary immersive digital experience in four rooms that includes algorithmdriven ocean waves and a cornucopia of bright, live graffiti. The exhibit, called “Massless”, runs until January 6, 2019. General admission is €18. Discounts are available for children, students, and veterans. The museum is closed on Tuesdays.
Silent sanctuary: Kamppi Chapel
Sauna and brunch: Löyly
Across the square from Amos Rex sits the bulging, unconventional wooden edifice of Kamppi Chapel, a beacon for anyone looking for a moment of rest, contemplation, or warmth after a day on their feet.
Nothing is more quintessentially Finnish than a sauna. In fact, a good Finn visits a sauna as often as they go to church, if not more frequently. Typically, public saunas are enjoyed nude in a same-sex environment but as Helsinki seeks to draw more tourists, they are taking into account that levels of comfort with nudity differ among cultures. Enter Löyly, a sauna and restaurant where bathing suit-clad men and women commingle comfortably in hot spaces.
The silent sanctuary is modeled after Italian chapels but in idea alone. Kamppi is minimalist yet comforting. Inside, there are no adornments save for two simple candle holders, rows of simple birchwood pews, and large felt cushions shaped like river rocks. Obscured skylights allow in enough light to keep it from being dim and the pale Finnish wood walls are seamless and rounded to match the exterior shape. It’s so silent that a pin-drop would echo. There are no regular services and the chapel maintains an ecumenical stance. Entrance is free. Prayer candles and postcards can be purchased for a suggested donation of €1.
Löyly is relatively new to the Helsinki sauna scene, having just opened in 2016 after a few years of trial and error over the design. At one point the architects sought to build a floating sauna on the Baltic Sea, but the idea was jettisoned when it became clear that high waves and ice packs would prove difficult, if not hazardous. Now, the angular wooden complex is situated on solid ground with a deck that peeks out over the Baltic. Guests hop between saunas and cool themselves with a dip in
the sea. In the winter, a hole called an “avanto” is cut in the ice for a truly polar plunge. The restaurant at Löyly is a modern take on Finnish cuisine. You’ll find elk meatballs, salmon soup, beetroot rösti, and sea buckthorn tiramisu. They also serve a delicious gin and tonic featuring Napue Gin, a locally-distilled favorite. Reservations for the sauna are recommended in advance. Admission is €19 and includes a towel, seat cover, soap, and shampoo. The restaurant is open for lunch and brunch. Curious travelers flock to Finland to witness the beauty of Lapland and the shimmering awesomeness of the Northern Lights. Helsinki is the port to those wonders, and the city has much to offer - even in the dead of winter. Amos Rex, Kamppi Chapel, and Loyly are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

He soon found his “purple gold” in Sonoma where he began his viticultural journey and went on to excavate Sonoma’s first wine caves. BENNY GOCAJ
Brings Upscale Steakhouse Dining to the West Village By Elizabeth Elston
R
estauranteur, Benny Gocaj, arrived in New York City in 2000 from Albania and started working as a bus boy at NINO’s restaurant. There Benny fell in love with the restaurant business and decided that one day he would own and operate his own restaurant. Benny learned English as he quickly moved up the ranks to waiter. By 2005, Benny was named as general manager of several Nino’s locations in Manhattan. This position is where Benny crafted his old-world style of managing, and becoming a full-service maître D. In 2011 Benny left Nino’s for the famous New York City steakhouse Smith & Wollensky where he met Chef Victor Chavez, and became friendly with him. In 2016, after an impressive 38-year long, Chef Chavez retired. Benny and Victor realized that they both had a similar vision for what a modern steakhouse might look like and had always fantasized about opening his own place. While collaborating, they caught wind of a vacant townhome along Greenwich Avenue in the West Village, the pair saw it as the perfect spot to launch their new dining hotspot. Chavez decided to make his comeback, but this time in a totally different intimate, downtown setting – something he had always wanted to do. Soon after Greenwich Steakhouse was born. Greenwich Steakhouse offers a uniquely upscale New York City steakhouse experience in an exquisitely designed three story West Village townhouse. The magnificent design aesthetic, the menu boasting dishes crafted to perfection and combined with an incredibly attentive waitstaff defines what it truly means to be a gourmet restaurant. Greenwich Steakhouse brings to life an exquisite dining experience suitable for all patrons and a variety of affairs. Benny spends most evenings at the head of the restaurant as the maître D where he greets all customers. Benny is extremely attentive to the needs of his clientele; he notes guests drink preferences, how they like their steak prepared, as well as their favorite seat. greenwichsteakhouse.com

assistance. Working with the Face Africa organization he has helped bring clean drinking water and improved sanitation to some 25,000 people in Liberia. A keen believer in the power of sport to motivate and inspire youth, Benny has also provided support to sports, sponsoring the Nigeria Football Federation for a five-year period, providing assistance to the Confederation of African Football Awards and the Aiteo Cup. Another initiative pursued by Mr. Peters is tackling the issue of internally displaced persons within Nigeria through contributions to the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency. Some 2 million people face economic hardship and poverty which is a barrier to social well-being and economic
prosperity which he is determined to champion. On presenting the award, Mike Perlis, Vice-Chairman of Forbes, Media said, “recipients are singled out for their work in bringing prosperity to all 55 countries of the African continent” On Receiving the Oil & Gas Leader 2018 Award from Forbes Benedict Peters commented, “This award motivates us to broaden our vision for the continent, despite all odds, and accelerate her economic transformation. MONA SHARAF Find a Job You Love, And You Will Never Work a Day in Your Life By HILLARY LATOS
M
ona Sharaf is a personal shopper and image consultant for both men and women, based in New York City. Sharaf did not always have her dream job; she worked in direct mail marketing as an analyst for nearly a decade. Sharaf disliked the tedious office culture and longed for opportunities to be creative. The decline in the direct mail marketing industry resulted in company downsizing and gave Sharaf a chance for a fresh start.
ripped jeans (hard) and of course a great layering piece like a cropped leather jacket or fitted blazer. Plus a great pair of heels or cropped boot to make the outfit complete. Who and or what inspires your style? I love Jennifer Lopez and Melania Trump’s styles. Their styles are different yet similar. Their looks are sexy, colorful, perfectly tailored, polished and always image-appropriate. By image-appropriate, I mean
During her search for a passion-filled career, someone suggested personal shopping and styling to Sharaf as she loved to shop and always dressed her family and friends. Not long after, Sharaf started the image consulting program at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and fell in love. Where do you find inspiration when putting together new looks? My clients inspire me; everyone has different personalities, tastes, body shapes, coloring, lifestyles, ages, and levels of ability to take fashion risks. I take all of that information into account when building a wardrobe so that it’s perfectly suited for each. They usually come to me feeling overwhelmed by shopping, have no idea what looks good, and have no confidence in essential settings such as work or dating. I coach as I shop so that they are confident enough to buy on their own if they HAD to. What are your thoughts on fast fashion and fashion transparency? For me, quality is everything; when you sacrifice quality, you also forfeit the fit of the garment and of course its longevity. There is no need to shop at H&M or Zara when you have designers brands you can buy for less at stores such as Nordstrom Rack, Century 21, Saks Off 5th, Bloomingdales Outlet, etc. Everyone can have designer pieces in their wardrobe and not pay a lot of money for them. I think Fashion Transparency is important because people like to know what they are buying and from where it came, and they have every right to know. A lot of the designers I work within the Garment District make all their items in their NYC studios. I also run Shopping Tours in the Garment District, and the tour groups were always fascinated to know that; it inclined them to buy more! What is your favorite season or attire to shop for and style? I love dressing for winter, which is perfect for living in New York. I love layering pieces; I often coach on the importance of having layering pieces and how they work together and make your outfit look complete and put together. What is your go-to look? My style is sexy/edgy; it’s a mix of hard and soft fabrics. You can often find me wearing a lacy camisole (soft) with leather pants (hard) or

SUMMER 2018 RECAP ㅆTop 5 Ports of Call for the World’s Elite Travelers By Adam Weiss
N
ick Andreottola spent most of his summer with his team developing and delivering exclusive luxury travel experiences to members of Status Luxury Group (SLG), the New York City-based global concierge and lifestyle network he founded more than a decade ago. As one of the top resources in the elite travel industry, Nick knows better than most how the world’s most selective travelers spent their summer vacations. “Hospitality is in my blood,” says Andreottola, better known to his clients and friends as Nick Champagne. “While Status Luxury Group does have a concierge component, it’s certainly not all we do. We provide luxury solutions, access, ideas, connections and more for our ultra-high net worth members, as well as their families and respective clients.” Some of Summer, 2018’s hottest destinations for wealthy travelers are perennial favorites, like SaintTropez and the Hamptons, while some locales have become more popular in recent years, including Mykonos and Barbados. “Portofino and the larger Italian coast were big hot-spots this season. Multiple areas of the Bahamas have also been favorites this year,” Andreottola says. Andreottola says that of the hundreds of exclusive experiences he has provided for Status Luxury Group members over the years, his favorites are the ones that provided the unique attention to detail that elite travelers demand on a regular basis.
100 | resident.com
Andreottola also says it’s his company’s focus on “psychology and attention to detail” that allows it to meet the unique needs and tastes of SLG’s members. “Specific details of their likes and dislikes: the specific window suite on an Emirates First Class flight closest to the shower, that spectacular southfacing suite with a particular view, Table 40 at Carbone, or not only a specific mega yacht size, but the one that has a captain and crew that we’ve vetted so that their family has an outstanding experience. These details matter. They are what keep our members aboard.” Andreottola and his SLG team also regularly execute seemingly impossible maneuvers to ensure their members’ trips are perfect. With that in mind, here are five of the hottest ports of call for elite travelers from Summer, 2018.
Mykonos, Greece What to do: Matoyianni Street for high-end shopping and café lounging; Astra and Void in Mykonos Town for late-night parties; Scorpios for spectacular sunset parties or Nammos for the classic champagne fueled craziness; Órnos and Platos Yalós beaches during the day for family time in the sun.
Portofino, Italy What to do: Private villas in Liguria, or the Excelsior Palace Hotel in Rapallo for the views of the Gulf of Tigullio; Piazza Martiri dell’Olivetta (La Piazza) for people- and celebrity-watching; drinks at Bar Morena, or on the terrace at Chuflay outside the Splendido Mare; Da Puny and Il Pitosforo for dinner.
Sandy Lane – St. James, Barbados What to do: The Spa at Sandy Lane for world-class treatments; the Country Club and the Green Monkey, designed by Tom Fazio, for 36 holes of challenging and gorgeously picturesque golf; the oversized Jacuzzi at your 7,300-square-foot five-bedroom private villa, while you wait for your personal chef to prepare your meals.
Mustique, St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Saint-Tropez, France
What to do: Barbecues in private gazebos on the beach, next to your private villa; scuba diving, sailing, and swimming during the day; island-hopping to Canouan for golf at the award-winning Jim Faziodesigned course at Canouan Estate, and for lounging at Grand Bay Beach and South Glossy Bay; Basil’s Bar at night for live music, and for running into celebrities and royalty.
What to do: Bagatelle Beach and Club 55 for day parties; Les Caves du Roy at the Hotel Byblos for tables and bottle service at night; Rivea and La Vague d’Or for Michelin-star dining; the port of Saint-Tropez for lounging on your superyacht.

RENÉE WILLETT Comedian & Actress By Bennett Marcus
R
enée Willett got her start in acting in 2015, when she was cast in Sharknado 3. Her very next role was working with Jennifer Aniston and Toni Collette in “The Yellow Birds,” a film that debuted at Sundance. “That was a cool start to my career,” the 25-yearold New York City native says. Willett’s next film, “The Comedian,” starred Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Edie Falco and Danny DeVito. She has now wrapped movies featuring Daniel Radcliffe, Alec Baldwin, Ron Perlman and Molly Ringwald. During this time Renee amassed over 500k followers on Instagram. instagram.com/reneewillett She always wanted to be an actress, and as a child. She did commercials and films “for fun” but as a professional junior tennis player, she devoted most of her time to the sport. But the passion was there, and Willett headed to L.A., graduating USC in 2014 with degrees in Economics, Spanish and Theatre. She is now earning an MBA at USC’s Marshall School of Business, focusing on film finance.
Comedy calls While Willett was taking classes at UCB and the Groundlings, she realized she wanted to do more comedic roles, and started writing her own material. Last year, at a party in the Hamptons, she told a woman she was a comic but hadn’t actually done any stand up. It turned out the woman produced shows for clubs like Gotham, and she asked Willett, “Do you want to do one tomorrow night in Manhattan?” Willett demurred, but the woman persisted, and she agreed to appear the following night at Comic Strip Live, where Jerry Seinfeld did his first show. “It went great and I haven’t stopped since.” She now performs regularly, in New York and Tel Aviv. A lot of her jokes are about being a single millennial and dating different types of guys in New York vs. L.A.
Philanthropic work Her comedy work had an unexpected benefit: Willett has become sought after to host charity events for organizations she supports. These include United Hatzala, Michael Milken Prostate Cancer Foundation, Shalvah Children’s Center, The SHOAH Foundation, Robin Hood, Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program, UJA-Federation, The China Institute, and The Yiddish Theatre. At a recent fundraiser for The Jewish Museum, Willett opened for Liev Schreiber. “He sang and I did standup.”
Andrew Dice Clay as mentor Willett went to see Andrew Dice Clay perform prior to shooting a film with the comedian. “We hung out after the show and I did some of my bits for him,” she says. “He loved it and wants to mentor me. We continued to Manhattan, and we all had 2:00 a.m. pizza where we spit-balled ideas and made some little silly videos. He may he even

have me open for him!”
What’s Next Next up is her biggest role yet, opposite Ray Liotta in “Cutman,” plus a movie with Famke Janssen and Cary Elwes that will shoot in Montauk. Willett is working with a writer on a basketball film, which she is producing and acting in, to which a lot of famous NBA players have signed on for cameos. Willett continues to train at the comedy schools, and studies acting with Lesly Kahn in L.A. She also studied the Meisner technique at the William Esper Studio in New York. “I believe in always honing your skills and learning. It’s kind of like with tennis; you can’t really go into a tournament if you haven’t been practicing and training every day. You can’t just walk in and expect to win.”

SUSAN J. BARRON Depicting the Invisible By Bennett Marcus
A
rtist Susan J. Barron was shocked to learn that every day, 22 U.S. veterans commit suicide, mainly due to post-traumatic stress disorder. “That is the official United States government number,” she says, adding that many veterans believe the rate is underreported.
Veterans & PTSD That heartbreaking statistic inspired her newest project, a portrait series of veterans suffering from PTSD titled “Depicting the Invisible.” Barron spent nearly two years traveling around the country listening to the veteran’s stories and photographing them. “They leave children and wives behind, and families are destroyed,” she says. “And to see them survive the hell of war to come back and die on the streets of their own hometown was a story that I needed to tell.”
The 6x6-foot portraits are mixed-media works consisting of photographic imagery, paint, and text. Each veteran makes direct eye contact with the viewer, and the text tells his story in his or her their words. “I wanted to project that the invisible wounds of war are just as devastating if not more so than the physical wounds of war. The physical wounds of war, we see it, we get it, we have doctors that can fix that. You can see that they’re wounded, and you understand that they require support. ell us how you got into art. I’ve always been curious and interested in art, even as child. I was fortunate enough to be able to travel quite a bit growing up, and living in Europe, it is relatively easy to move between different countries and experience distinct realities and cultures. My family always encouraged me to do so. I was exposed to museums, art galleries and exhibitions at a young age, and that was certainly a fundamental influence in my upbringing and visual culture. Where did you study? I graduated in design from Lisbon’s University of

Fine Arts. Later, I worked as a creative director for digital projects for almost a decade, before deciding to become a full-time artist. During my college years, I took painting lessons on the side, in the studio of a Portuguese artist who had a very traditional, old-school approach to oil painting. Although my current work is basically a deconstruction of those strict rules and methods, that certainly helped me understand the foundations of a good painting. What are your inspirations? To be honest, I have always thought inspiration is somewhat overrated. I try not to rely too much on
it - it’s more important to be self-aware and mindful of your surroundings. You can draw inspiration from almost anything: a movie that you saw, music that’s playing in the background, some old photos you revisit on your phone…. Having said that, I’m more drawn to the human figure and facial expressions; that’s what I paint almost exclusively. I can be inspired or motivated to paint a face by being exposed to a completely different subject, like an abstract painting from another artist that may evoke an emotion I relate to and then try to convey in my own work. What form of painting would you say your art is?
and Europe, including some local clients in Portugal, of course. I work with different materials, like large-scale canvases and small acrylics on paper, so consequently, my client base is very eclectic from high-profile individuals and some celebrities to the general public. I don’t do that many shows. At this point, I’m only engaging in one show per year. It takes me many months to prepare for an exhibition, so I prefer to focus on one at a time in order to create a consistent body of work. I’ve exhibited in Germany and in Brazil, and I just came back from a show in the US. Next year, I’m exhibiting locally, in a gallery near Sintra, Portugal. Aside from my studio, which is a large and isolated warehouse, I have a small personal gallery at the Marina, in Cascais (Portugal), where there is a permanent exhibition of my paintings, which I keep rotating from time to time. What is your next series? Which series are you the most proud of ? I did a show called “Somnium,” which is Latin for “dream,” where I depicted the faces of people
who were lost in their thoughts, in a dream-like state. From then on, I revisited my “Materia” series, which is mostly large-scale feminine portraits, and I’m still going on about them, always working on 3 or 4 pieces at the same time. I also continue to paint my “Ballerinas,” which is a series of smaller works exploring the spontaneity and abrupt movements of ballet dancers. Although there is a sense of proudness when I successfully complete one of these pieces, I try not to dwell on it or fall in love with any of them. I believe only the “next artwork” deserves my full devotion and interest. Which artists inspire you the most? William Stoher and Lionel Smit create incredibly deep portrait paintings. The “Separated Land” series by Fernando Gaspar is wonderful to get lost in. Basquiat is also an influence of mine, for sure. The bold minimalism of Robert Motherwell’s pieces is something I can’t get enough of. mhc.pt saatchiart.com/mariohenrique
There’s a really nice Austrian painter who coined the term spontaneous realism. I like that, and I can identify myself with that idea, particularly with the spontaneous aspect of it, as I’m very fast and impulsive when painting. That process should be reflected in the painting. You should be able to feel the physicality of the painting process. But this is his definition, so I won’t steal it. I’d say that what I do falls in the contemporary figurativism category, or maybe modern expressionism. There’s also a pop art quality in some of my pieces, in terms of the use of certain primary colours and the depiction of iconic figures, so that can also sometimes be a reasonable definition. I’m not very concerned with trying to accommodate my painting in a specific category - that is a job best left to the public and to their own personal references. Who are your clients? Have you done many art shows? Most of my clients are private collectors in the US. I also have clients in South America, Asia

hen did your passion for painting come about? In my childhood, I liked to paint, draw and create various artworks. Given that my parents were artists and my sister was educated as an art pedagogue, I was surrounded by fine arts. The event that encouraged me most on this path, was the first time I sold my products after the opening of the studio. I further developed my passion in middle school. I had already set up my first exhibition of watercolors and collages entitled “Sights of Maribor. From where did you gain years of experience in fine arts? A lot of my knowledge about various art techniques was given to me by my parents, but through studies at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Maribor, I learned a lot about the materials, statics and geometry that I use in my creations. I often attend various workshops, where I try to gain additional skills and experience. Which art techniques and motifs are close to you? Initially, my work was influenced mainly by African art, which was enhanced by my fierce temperament. I like to play with various art materials and techniques. I could say that my pictures are distinguished by a stronger impulse, intense colors and narrative shapes. Now, I am in a period when I go to simpler lines and fuse forms and colors into one. I am still striving for color intensity but by changing the texture and methods of applying colors. Where do you draw inspiration? I am inspired by colors, materials and various textures, as well as the process of setting up concepts and perfecting ideas. I often take inspiration while spending time in nature, at sea, or when I see some interesting visual arts.
What does it mean for you to express yourself through the art of painting? I paint because I enjoy it immensely, but at the same time, it releases me, whereby I can again find my inner peace and find new strengths. My imagination comes alive and takes me to a different world - a world of colors, materials and perfect harmony. Through my creations, I can show my ideas, visions and energy to the world. Who are your clients? My fans and ultimately buyers are people who adore my kind of art. I use a mixed art technique. I include painting and sculptural works. Recently, I have devoted myself to horses, studying their entire anatomy. Horses are my passion. My clients are animal lovers who especially love horses and everything related to them. Have you done many art shows? I attend art fairs and galleries. I am trying to find out whether it is suitable for my artwork and, of
course, if it can be interesting to my clients. Some of my art shows:
▪ 2018 Hypnose Studio, Rudersdorfer Str 2658073,
▪ 2016 MUS 2016, international art fair in Slovenia
Which series are you most proud of ? Which artists inspire you the most? I am most proud of the first prize (32ame Salon d’Arts Plastiques de la Rochelle, France), which I received for my sculpture. There were plenty of artists involved. There were 689 works of art (479 paintings and 210 sculptures). I am also proud of my series “Wild Horses” I have exhibited works all over the world and have received great reviews.

ell us how you got into art? As a child I went to a ballet academy and followed ballet classes to become a professional ballerina. After quitting ballet school at the age of 16 I decided that I would rather go to university and study law. I became a lawyer that specialized in environmental law and worked for the Dutch Government and the European Commission in Brussels. When my children were very little I stopped working as a lawyer and after a few years I didn’t go back practicing law again cause I felt the urge to do something with art again. I was searching for the right form of art to express myself, so I wrote poems and started with photography— first as an amateur, but later as a professional, and gained recognition after winning a Dutch photo award. Although I loved taking pictures, especially portraits, somewhere during the end of the last decade I realized that I wanted to do something that was less technical and looked for more physical involvement and creative freedom. So one day I decided to buy paint and brushes and from that

moment on I knew that I had found the right medium to express myself. Where did you study? I took different art courses and master classes for several years, but decided not to go to an art academy. I am quite stubborn and I wanted to find my own way and be more of an autodidact— self-taught. However, I am a member of a Dutch drawing group called the Hamdorff Drawing Club, which is a group of drawing professionals, some of them actually work as drawing teachers and we meet weekly to draw nudes. For me this is also an opportunity to study and to work on my drawing and painting skills. What are your inspirations? And which artists inspire you the most? Some of my favorite sources of inspiration come from the East as well as the West. The eastern aesthetics of calligraphy, art inspired by Zen and the abstraction of the Japanese Gutai movement
are inspirational to me. It was an eye-opener for me when I found a book in an antique bookstore about Zen Aesthetics, Zen and the Fine Arts by Shin’ichi Hisamatsu. In this book the characteristics of art inspired by Zen are described and these are fascinating to me. The artists of the avant-garde Gutai movement were attempting to create new art forms merging Eastern and Western culture, as well as the modern and traditional. They really focused on innovation and tried not to imitate artists, which I think is an important ideal. From the West several abstract expressionist artists are another source of inspiration for me, such as the American artists Cy Twombly, Jackson Pollock, Joan Mitchell and Willem de Kooning. I also admire the Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch, who is one of my favorite painters. The more personal subject that is inspiring and
challenging me as an artist is the fact that we as humans find it hard to live in harmony with our planet, more specifically nature and our environment. I feel privileged to be an artist, because to me it is the most beautiful and rewarding profession existing. But this privilege goes alongside responsibility. When I think of the ongoing conflict between man and nature, I think I have a task as an artist to act and do something about it. My role is to raise awareness of the existing problems that we are all facing. What form of painting would you say your art is? After having painted figuratively, mainly painting portraits and human figures, I discovered abstract painting. I am driven by intuition while working and I am searching for coincidences in order to reach as much spontaneity in a painting as possible. Furthermore I want to be physically involved in the painting process by also using my hands or arms to paint in order to make spontaneous and intuitive marks. When achieving a sort of energetic, spontaneous harmony I feel satisfied. If you want to search for a description of my style it is probably abstract expressionism, but the term lyrical abstraction is even better in describing the essence of my art. Maybe you can even call my art abstract activism, since I am aiming at consciousness-raising. Who are your clients? Have you done many art shows? Anyone can be a client, since my art is meant for everyone. But so far my clients have mostly been from the United States, secondly from Europe. However on social media I also have quite a bit of followers from the Far East. Recently I was approached by a Chinese online art gallery, and now they are promoting my art in China. I have done several art shows in Europe, in Milan, Brussels, Luxembourg, Stuttgart, Essen and Amsterdam. And recently I had a group show in New York at the Onishi Gallery, owned by Japanese gallerist Nana Onishi. It is the only Japanese-owned gallery in New York. What is your next series? Which series are you the most proud of ? I do favor my Zen Study series and also the more minimal and monochrome series I have made. Since this year I am working on a new Zen Study series with titles focusing on the Do’s and Don’ts of sustainable, environment-friendly behavior. Abstract artworks with titles as commandments, like Dontfly, Dontwastewater or Doless and Doloveyourgarden! It is probably inspired by my past working as an environmental lawyer! NICK MORAN Abstract Sculpture’s Brightest Star By angela noelle
I
was pretty hands-on with tools from about the age of 10. I made skateboards and go-karts next door in my grandfather’s workshop at the end of his garden, but I also made objects that really didn’t do anything; I just liked the way different shapes connected. I think these were probably my first sculptures.

As I grew up, I couldn’t see being sculptor a viable career option. I knew that was who I was, but I didn’t know how to be it. When I left school, I didn’t really know what to do with myself. I had always wanted to travel, so first, I went around Europe then the US, Canada,
New Zealand, and India. I worked along the way fruit picking, landscaping and general laboring. In Australia, I got a job at a steel works factory. The highly skilled, self-assured character of the men who worked there and the strong sense of camaraderie really appealed to me. I loved the heat and the clatter of the place. This was the first time I learnt
how to form steel, I took this experience back to the UK and went to an art school that specialised in blacksmithing. This was followed by an apprenticeship, and then I opened my own forge in London, which gave me the time to develop my art practice alongside the commissioned work I was producing for clients at the time. Travel remains an important source for my work, and if I can’t get away, there are so many great museums in London. A new series usually starts this way. Recently, a visit to Iceland led to a series of sculptures inspired by the coastal communities and the fishing boats in the harbours around the country. The initial idea became an abstract memory. Sculpture has its own language, and I aim to tell a story like a poem or a song but without word. This is how I want to reach the viewer. Recently, I moved to a new studio. This had an effect on my work in a way I did not expect. The studio is much closer to home, and this has changed my working pattern. Now, I tend to work either in the day but also late into the evening, which has led to a more thoughtful process with reduced elements. My current series of sculptures are probably the most intimate work I have produced. Although based in the UK, my work often finds homes in collections around the world and has been particularly popular in the USA. Artistically, I have always been attracted to the hard-edge California paintings of the 60s and the work of steel sculptor David Smith. It is that type of industrial history within the methods of construction I find particularly appealing. Past commissions include the 2012 London Olympics; a US swimmer was awarded one of my sculptures, “Bryndis,” to celebrate him becoming the greatest Olympic athlete of all time. Most recently, I had a commission to produce two sculptures for the Arctic cruise ship “Norwegian Bliss.” My work is available from Saatchi Online, who facilitates all of my US sales. nickmoransculptor.com

studio with my wife, Magdalena Iulia Moscu, who is also a painter. Where did you study? I received a B.A. in Art and Restoration from the State University of Sibiu, Romania. I graduated in 2008. What are your inspirations? I take inspiration from textures of objects degrading, decaying, rusting, or corroding over time. The
complex structure of the combination of broad brushstrokes with specific colors (blues grays, browns, and greens) assumes extreme importance in the artwork, taking a critical view of social, political and cultural issues by suggesting a somber, furtive, and enigmatic mood. I try to expose a contemporary vision of major political narratives and fundamental, universal topics, such as the abuse of power, exploitation and oppression, and also of a personal, individual,
human struggle. In my research as an artist, I intend to deconstruct reality, fairy tales, old photos that depict childhood, and adult culture in a discourse that challenges existing political, economical, social, and technological paradigms. Last but not least, I intend to explore the relationship between man and nature in urban environments in an attempt to obscure historical and political references with personal memories, film references and scenes from the entertainment industry, and elements from art history. What form of painting/drawing would you say your art is? I generally paint in a expressionism and surrealism style. My style has evolved purely through practice and reading. Painting is both a physical and cerebral act. Who are your clients? Have you done many art shows?
My clients/art collectors are mainly from the United States. I have works in private collections in Seattle, New York, Los Angeles, Texas, etc., but also in the UK, Australia, Monaco, France, Belgium, Germany and Austria. Last year, in 2017, I had a busy year with two solo shows in Germany, one in Munich and another one in Nuremberg, and for the second time, I was a part of an art residency in Belgium. I also exhibited some works in group shows in London and Berlin. In October of this year, I will show my work at the London Art Week, where I will be part of The Other Art Fair in London, presented by Saatchi Art. What is your next series? Which series are you the most proud of ? I have been making art for almost three decades, and even though I have explored many mediums, I feel the central themes have remained the same.
Currently, I am working on a series of four smallsize paintings in which I try to experiment with oil paint over acrylic, working in a new style for me: abstract expressionism. I don’t think I’m proud of some specific series I have done, because I always think that I can do better work than those I have already made. So, maybe the series I will be proud of has not yet been created. Which artists inspire you the most There are so many good artists now, like Lou Ros, Alexander Tinei, Justin Mortimer, Mercedes Helnwein and the great Romanian painter, Adrian Ghenie. I like their work, their subjects are very powerful and they are truly living inspirations. I aslo like Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and many others.
