EDITOR’S NOTE
A
s summer starts fading to fall, it’s time to retreat back to reality, but there are now new festivities to look forward to, such as the biggest event of the season, Fall Fashion Week. There are also plenty of posh places to escape to during this enchanting time of the year, including the historic HOTEL DU PONT in Delaware where you will find many timeless treasures. For a more tropical getaway as temperatures start dropping, get your glam on at Grand Pelican Resort in Miami Beach, where things are always heating up. This month we spoke with MSNBC anchor Stephanie Ruhle, who is bringing her own rules to her upcoming and soon-to-be wildly popular podcast, Modern Ruhles. This career woman and mom of three opens up about how she balances her busy work and home life, as well as how much she loves living in New York City. Through her podcast, Ruhle is trying to change perspectives and is ready to tackle today’s biggest issues. Beginning September 5th, you will also be able to get a different perspective when you visit the fall exhibit at the Georges Bergès Gallery, featuring the works of German-born artist Jean Schmiedel. Georges Bergès talks to us about the meaning behind the exhibit, called Kontakt, which is Schmiedel’s first solo exhibit in the United States, as well as his own expanding artistic empire. All-star sports broadcaster, businesswoman, author and philanthropist Ann Liguori, shares her personal and professional stories from her time both on air and behind the scenes. She might have already accomplished so much during the course of her career, but Ann continues to aim high, and is still taking her best swing on the golf course and beyond. The end of summer also marks the beginning of the US Open. As the biggest names in the sport descend on Arthur Ashe Stadium, tennis aficionados know that the best place to watch each high stakes match is in the Emirates Box, which is truly unmatched for its people watching and palatable plates. Within our pages you will also find our favorite spots in Chile as well as Egypt, where you can cruise along the Nile River like never before. From sporting events to runway shows, there are so many great things to fall in love with this fall. Wishing you a happy and healthy Labor Day! IG @allthefamenoneofthefortune

LAKI NATURALS
Inspired by and Bringing Hawaii to You By w. a. muller
W
hen the LA-based designer Tiffany Lerman, daughter of the late bestselling novelist Jackie Collins, was looking for her next venture, she turned to what she knew – and one of her favorite places – to create a new wellness bath and body brand. An entrepreneur with a passion for nature and love of color and design, Lerman has launched many brands, including Tiny Tillia - a whimsical collection of ecoconscious, paraben-free children’s bath and beauty products, which was acquired by Avon in 2011. In 2018, Lerman launched Laki Naturals – a brand of high-quality bath and body products. Truly reflecting the “Essence of the Islands,” as Hawaii is one of her favorite places to visit, Laki is the Hawaiian word for “lucky.”Lerman wanted to bring the spirit of “aloha” to life with Laki Naturals, so she created a product that could allow consumers to experience a piece of the island lifestyle at home versus physically be there. In addition, the brand also honors Lerman’s late mother, alluding to the Jackie Collins’ well-known character, Lucky Santangelo, who Lerman describes as her mother’s alter ego and a female heroine who inspires women to be strong and independent. Like her mother, Lerman believes that being a strong woman is important to helping women achieve a peaceful, meaningful, and empowered state of mind. As bathing is now an essential routine in a woman’s everyday self-care regimen, to unwind and detoxify at home, Laki Naturals allows consumers to have that therapeutic experience at home to cleanse the body and calm the mind, body, and soul. To bring Laki Natural’s mission to life, of turning a daily beauty and wellness regimen

into a detoxifying and restorative ritual, the products provide a unique combination of sea salts and magnesium. The bath soaks are infused with pure Hawaiian sea salts, which are sourced from the Hawaiian island of Molokai, filtered to remove impurities, and harvested with solar seal evaporators, to provide an end product of pure Hawaiian sea salts containing natural minerals and electrolytes. Laki Naturals bath soaks are made with magnesium chloride, which is highly absorbable through the skin and contributes to various vital functions in our bodies. The flakes are sourced from the ancient Zechstein Seabed, which stretches across Northern Europe. In addition, the products are non-GMO, vegan, and have no petrochemicals, parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, or artificial dyes. The Laki Naturals product line includes bath soaks and shower fizzies that are carefully curated with natural fragrances, essential oils and premium materials from around the world. The bath soaks, which are formulated with the genuine Zechstein magnesium chloride, can help decrease stress and anxiety, relieve achy muscles and joints, promote healthy sleep, improve skin hydration, decrease inflammation and improve skin conditions. They are available in a variety of scents, including Aloha Rose, Charcoal Lava, Coconut Milk, Eucalyptus Peppermint, Lavender, and Neroli, as well as unscented for those who want the benefits of the salts minus any fragrance. The Laki Naturals Shower Fizzy can transform your bathroom and transport you to a tranquil place as the steam releases aromas to add a sensual experience to your daily shower. HAIR DETOX® The Hair Revival Supplement By Ann Grenier
T
he effects of a stressful lifestyle, nutritional deficiencies, environmental aggressors, and hormonal imbalances can lead to fine, thinning hair and even hair loss. Hair Detox® is the first lifestyle supplement to address many of these issues by helping detoxify from the inside out and by supporting the body’s natural ability to promote healthy hair, skin and nails. The ingredients in Hair Detox® are based on a specially developed pyramid that includes the ingredients most often associated with healthy hair, skin and nails, as well as two Matrix Blends that are exclusive to Hair Detox®. The Pyramid to Fuller, Thicker Hair: • Hair, Skin and Nails Matrix: Positions Biotin and Vitamin D at the top because they are recognized as key in the development of healthy hair, skin and nails. Additionally, Hydrolyzed Keratin is placed at the top because it is crucial structural material in hair, nails and the outer layer of the skin. Also included at the top are Horsetail & Bamboo Shoot Extract, sources of silica, which is essential for the production and maintenance of collagen. • Detox Matrix: Denotes ingredients that may help detoxify in the middle. The Detox Matrix Blend that includes: Milk Thistle Seed Extract, Grape Seed

Extract, Green Tea Leaf Extract, Aloe Vera Leaf Powder, Dandelion Root Powder, Cranberry Fruit Extract, Resveratrol (from Japanese Knotweed Root Extract), Fennel Seed Powder, Citrus Peel Bioflavonoids Complex and Stinging Nettle Root Extract. These nutrients and herbs were specifically selected for their traditional and scientifically supported abilities to help combat nutritional deficiencies, environmental aggressors, hormonal imbalances, inflammation of the body and more.* • Stress Relief Matrix: Shows the Hair Detox® ingredients that are intended to relieve stress at the base. The Stress Relief Matrix Blend includes mixed Phytosterols, Ashwagandha Root Extract, L-Theanine, Holy Basil Leaf Powder, Astragalus Root Powder, Gotu Kola Herb Powder and Saw Palmetto Berry Extract. Hair Detox® is the first lifestyle dietary supplement to include ingredients that were specifically selected to help minimize the effects of stress.* While Hair Detox® was formulated to provide multiple benefits to anyone seeking healthy hair, vibrant skin and strong nails, it comes in customized formulations for men and women to meet their specific needs. Hair Detox® for Women nourishes hair, skin and nails with Biotin and Hydrolyzed Keratin and helps combat hormonal imbalances.
It contains L-cysteine, an amino acid needed for strong hair, and cranberry extract to help protect cells. Hair Detox® for Men recognizes that thinning hair and hair loss are often related to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which plays a key role in male pattern baldness. It contains saw palmetto, which may reduce the risk of male-pattern baldness; MSM, which may help reduce inflammation; and Grape Seed Extract to support cardiovascular health. Created by Angelo David Pisacreta, founder and creative director of the Angelo David Salon in NYC, Hair Detox® is based on his 25-plus years of experience working with consumers who have fine and/or thinning hair. Physician approved and made in a USA-based GMP-certified manufacturing environment, Hair Detox® relies on the latest scientific research and globally sourced ingredients that are selected for their purity and potency. This cool new collection showcases original, hand painted artwork by Hektad, featuring his mini colored hearts or his inspiring “love” tags on select eye-popping Pop Mini Bags and Pop Bag panels. Hektad, one of the most influential pioneers of New York City street art, will take your style to new heights. He might be a huge hit on Instagram and social media, but Hektad is also known for his impactful installations, including the installations taking place at Tiffany’s on 5th Avenue, as well as those at The Baccarat Hotel and even The World Trade Center. You can also admire his murals at the Oculus, Pietro Nolita, and more importantly, on your very own bag! From the mini bags to the backpack style and large totes, you can choose your color and design, though you’ll definitely want them all! Hektad, a Bronx native, attempts to convey his message of love through his work, and now his passionate paintings will come alive on your Pop Bag. When you purchase one of these exclusive pieces, you are also helping to give back, as part of the collections’ proceeds will go to support Bottomless Closet. Bottomless Closet is a non-profit organization that helps empower New York City women in need, who want to enter the workforce and achieve success. Pop Bags, which are produced in Florence, might have fashion forward designs, but each piece incorporates the centuries-old tradition of producing only the highest-quality leather bags. Their masterful local craftsmen ensure that each product is not only beautiful, but beautifully made. This limited-edition bag will certainly shine, whether it’s in the streets or in the first row of Fall Fashion Week! in Belgium, my wife and I decided to go back to Italy where we restored an old 13th century country house and turned it into a small boutique hotel and restaurant.
How did you get into the restaurant/hospitality business? I’ve been cooking since I was since little, it’s always been a passion of mine. I used to watch my grandmother cook and play with the food. My parents didn’t want me to work in a kitchen, so they sent me to school to study business and marketing.

with work, but I always try to make time for my family. I created my very first hospitality business with my wife and so my kids were born into the hospitality industry, they know a lot about it. Where do you live? Favorite things to do in New York, hobbies, etc. I live in Saratoga Springs, although i stay in the city four to six days a week and hope to relocate closer to the city soon. When i have time, i love to just walk around New York City, try different food and get inspired. I also do many events for non-profit organizations. What made you decide to open in Saratoga? I met a couple of partners who wanted to develop a restaurant and bring authentic Italian cuisine and a wood-fired oven to Saratoga, so I decided to go in with them. Favorite travel spots? Do you go back to Italy often? I love to travel all over the world. South America is one of my favorite places. There are also so many great places to see within the US. We try to go to Italy as often as possible but things have been so busy we haven’t been back for any big holidays in a couple of years.
What can you tell us about your soon-to-be new restaurant? When is it opening? “Cotto” which means cooked in Italian, will feature dishes with fresh and authentic flavors, but we plan on showcasing them in a more modern and creative way. We are also developing a great mixology list, as well as extensive wine, liquor, tea and coffee menus. We are going to be located in the new Marriott Renaissance Hotel in Chelsea, so we plan to offer breakfast, lunch, dinner and delivery 24/7. What is most rewarding about the charities/organizations you are involved with? I am involved in different charities and organizations both directly and indirectly. I’m the President of Slow Food Chefs Alliance USA, as well as Advisor for the Ass. Italian Chefs of NY. I have also done many events for foundations including Natures Kids in Costa Rica, No Kids Hungry, The Food Bank NY with NYCWFF of Food Network, Noah Home in San Diego, and others. I believe that we all need to help, it’s so rewarding. @cheffacchini cottonyc.com fabriziofacchini.com
thought it would be a great opportunity for our kids. The New York restaurant scene is comprised of food from all over the world in the center of the world. What is the secret sauce to your success? Did you ever imagine you would become such a big name in the industry? There’s no secret really, just a lot of passion, creativity, learning, evolution and work. I’m doing well, but I’m very ambitious and have more goals I want to accomplish. I never could have imagined I’d get to where I am now, but now that I’m here, I have to keep going. How do you bring the authenticity of Italian cooking to your restaurants here? I try to reproduce the flavors of what I used to eat growing up, which includes using traditional recipes and techniques and sourcing the best ingredients, both imported and domestic. Everything is made with love and passion. How do you balance work and family life? How involved are you in the restaurants? My wife and my kids are very involved in what I do. We try to decide everything together. I’m very busy

VESICA VODKA
Your New Favorite Gluten-Free Find By Julie Sagoskin Photographed by Daniel Andries
W
hen it comes to a choosing a smooth and satisfying drink, Vesica Vodka is indeed a very good choice! Vesica Vodka, a brand new brand in the gluten-free alcoholic beverage industry, was founded by Adam Bak. Bak a big name in the business, was one of the first exporters of Polish vodka to the US. This vodka visionary is responsible for the success of Ultimat Vodka, one of the most high-end vodka products, which was ultimately sold to tequila company Patron.
of wheat, rye and potato, Vesica is made with just potato, ensuring a smooth finish – you are sure to be a fan of this new organic vodka! Adam’s success story isn’t over yet, as he is now selling his creation in 21 markets at the moment, including Florida, Texas, Ohio, Maine, Mississippi and Upstate New York, with plans to further expand in the near future. With different flavors such as coconut and apple, everyone will be able to enjoy Vesica their way. Let’s just say it makes for one great apple martini!
Adam, who is originally from Poland, started importing food products from his native country, which is a powerhouse in the production of fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and cherries. When he was presented with the opportunity to import alcoholic beverages, he decided to give it a try, and is now a superstar in the spirits business! This bold businessman who lives in Brooklyn is one of the most significant importers in the United States. His warehouse, Adamba Imports International, Inc., is still located in Greenpoint.
“Because of the package and quality and concept, as well as the experience we have, we have had a lot of successes in our portfolio,” explained Adam. “We had built another brand as well but were only exporting. We had a contract for 15 years and took it from 0 to 200,000 cases. When our contract expired, since they owned distribution, we lost it, but this gave us an opportunity to come up with Vesica. We’re still building it and hopefully with much help we will become a successful brand.”

At the time that Adam got involved with Ultimat Vodka, there were 138 similar brands on the market. With
hundreds of brands popping up every year, many of which wind up failing, it’s important to have a product that as Adam puts it, “tastes good!” The taste factor is why Vesica, which is connected to the word and meaning of vesical, has been able to sustain itself on the shelves without any major marketing influencer behind it. “Vesical is a mathematical shape, it’s very spiritual as well,” explained Adam. This experienced producer knows a thing or two about beautiful bottles. After all, Ultimat Vodka was the first crystal product, and became a fast favorite amongst celebrities including Diane von Furstenberg and Governor Cuomo, who insisted on having the unique bottles at his wedding. Adam was also the first one to import the super unique Bison Grass Vodka, which has a cult-following in the United States and is a best-seller in Russia and Poland. The grass really is greener at Adam’s warehouse in Greenpoint! He has also had a 20year relationship with Glo Creative, a Miami-based advertising agency, who has been a part of Ultimat, Bison and now Vesica success. vesicavodka.com

hether you’re out on the town or enjoying an intimate evening, as long as you have a cocktail made with Rutte Gin & Genever, you will definitely have something to rejoice! In fact, a number of your favorite classic cocktails are made with gin or genever. These spirits, which originated in Holland, are guaranteed to put you in good spirits. Their incredible flavors showcase the most dynamic aspects of their Dutch distillery. A leading Dutch expert in Botanical distilling since 1872, Rutte Gin & Genever is located in the historic town of Dordrecht, near Rotterdam. Made in one of the smallest distilleries, Rutte Gin & Genever is a small batch production where each and every bottle is uniquely handcrafted, utilizing only natural ingredients. Currently, Rutte Gin & Genever produces nine types of the renowned spirit. The following spirits are undoubtedly the highlights of the company’s arsenal: Rutte Old Simon Genever is a premium genever made using the 19th century recipe of founder Simon Rutte that includes juniper, herbs, roasted nuts, notes of berry and rich malt flavour. The drink has a light, nutty, velvet finish.

Although gin and genever can already be found in many classic cocktails, Rutte Master Distiller Myriam Hendrickx says that there is always room for exploration. “For the use of gin and genever in cocktails there is still a lot to discover. Gin is super versatile and a staple product all bars have, which makes it perfect to play around with and create new concoctions. Genever, even more versatile and complex, lends itself very well to recreate classics and also to reinvent for example Whisky cocktails.’” Here are some classy cocktails that may be crafted using Rutte products:

he might anchor two hours a day, five times a week on MSNBC with her shows “MSNBC Live with Stephanie Ruhle” (M-F 9 a.m. ET) and “MSNBC Live with Velshi & Ruhle” (M-F 1 p.m. ET) but more importantly, Stephanie Ruhle realizes the importance of remaining focused on family and relating to her audience on a personal level. This personable television news anchor, who covers everything from the latest headlines on MSNBC to
breaking down the day’s business headlines and covering health and wellness for NBC News Digital, has indeed won over her viewers, and is now releasing her first podcast, Modern Ruhles, this month. Though she is a Jersey girl at heart, Ruhle always loved New York City, and has indeed made it big in the Big Apple. After moving to the city after college, Ruhle, launched into her first career in
investment banking, an experience she says is not so far off from her current role: “The things I loved in banking are the things I love about media. They’re both about relationships. In banking it was about building trust and relationships with my clients, and in TV it’s the same. In 2019 you can get information from anywhere. It’s about having a trusted relationship with my viewers. While it may seem like we’ve never been more divided, I think there are three things

the kids. I get this question constantly. I struggle with this even today, but am committed to changing the culture in my own life and for those around me.”
It was Ruhle’s participation in the White House Project - a non-profit organization that worked to increase female representation in American businesses and government - that launched her career in media.
This successful media maven also has another fulltime job: motherhood. With three children - two boys and a girl - Ruhle and her husband, Andy, always make time for family…but it’s not always easy. “Working moms like me carry a lot of guilt: when I’m at work, I’m constantly worried about what am I missing at home. When I’m at home, I’m concerned about what I’m missing at work. I think working moms blame themselves for coming up short in both places. No one ever asks my husband when he’s on a business trip about who is watching
Ruhle has always been passionate about the advancement of women and girls. The 43-year-old anchor explained that it’s important for women to stick together to rise through the ranks in their careers. While she was still in banking, Ruhle founded the Corporate Investment Bank Women’s Network where she encouraged girls to study math and economics, urged undergraduate women to pursue careers in finance and helped her female colleagues already in the industry climb the ladder.
Ruhle was introduced to Andy Lack, the chairman and CEO of Bloomberg Media at the time and current NBC News & MSNBC Chairman, at an event run through the organization. While Ruhle was proud of all she had accomplished on Wall Street, she was ready for a new challenge; one that put her in a place she wasn’t so familiar with: the bottom. Her new career goal? An on air job in media. How to get there? Ruhle had not a clue. “I didn’t have a background in television, but Andy said to me, in the new world of media, there will be no more TV

presenters. We need people who know the content and love the content.” The good news for Ruhle? That was her. She knew joining Bloomberg with no prior experience was certainly a risk, but one that would paid off immensely. She went on to become an anchor and managing editor for Bloomberg Television and editor-at-large for Bloomberg News, where she co-hosted Bloomberg <GO>, Bloomberg TV’s flagship morning show prior to joining NBC News and MSNBC in 2016. Now, Ruhle delivers the latest breaking news and live coverage of the day’s important stories for NBC News and MSNBC, as well as NBC News Digital, where she weighs in on lifestyle, wellness and

trending topics in leadership. “The unique thing about NBC News and MSNBC is that on any given day, I could be reporting on a business story for “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt,” providing the “TODAY” audience with tips to get back into the workforce and tackling the latest news of the day on my MSNBC shows.” Today, this busy broadcaster is taking her talents to a new medium: podcasting. Her new series, Modern Ruhles, compelling conversations in culturally complicated times, produced in collaboration iHeartMedia, focuses on introducing dialogue and open mindedness. “We’re living in a time when our instinct has become shutting those who don’t agree with us down, instead of listening to one another. We have more platforms
and outlets than ever – but dialogue has died. The line of what one can or cannot say has never been more blurry, yet we’ve never been more woke. I felt like it was important to talk about some of today’s hot button topics without fighting.” Ruhle was inspired to start these conversations while on vacation in Upstate New York. A waitress at a local restaurant explained to the anchor why she was a self-proclaimed “deplorable.” After a long conversation about the woman’s life and loyalty to President Trump, Ruhle realized this woman was looking for change. This inspired Ruhle to open the dialogue about the issues confronting us on a day-to-day basis to try to see past stereotypes and hear alternative

points of view. “If we could understand other people’s perspectives, it would help us progress. Politics or culture shouldn’t divide us. Suddenly there’s a growing list of topics that we can’t discuss with our own families or friends without fear of being labeled ignorant or out of touch. We might talk about them privately but wouldn’t feel comfortable saying them publicly.” Each episode of the podcast focuses on a specific issue – ranging from privilege to political correctness – and aims to deliver compelling conversations in culturally complicated times. Ruhle is creating a platform that gets at the truth of who we are and where we’re going. Throughout the podcast, Ruhle sits down with some of her favorite voices of influence to discuss these hot button issues. Actress and writer Amber Tamblyn joins to discuss the significance of the Me Too movement; athlete, comedian and actor Terry Crews delves into the origins of toxic masculinity; and Ruhle has a hard and heartfelt conversation with her mother about her definition of feminism. This former downtown girl turned Upper East Sider has come to love her neighborhood, which she describes as a great place to raise kids. “It’s amazing to me that the Guggenheim is my kids’ local museum and their Little League is in Central Park. Right now, we’re undertaking the challenge of trying every pizzeria on the East Side, my kids do the reviews.” On calling New York City home, the news anchor says she still can’t believe she lives here. “It’s the greatest city in the world. Every time I go over the bridge, I take a picture of it. People think of New York as being so impersonal, but I think it’s just the opposite. New York has become my family.” Between her popular news programs and her upcoming podcast, Modern Ruhles, Ruhle is driven by smart content that both informs viewers and fosters an environment to welcome all perspectives. ESCAPE TO GRENADA The Island of Spice By Hillary Latos
From the moment you step off the plane, you are greeted by the warm wafts of nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and ginger in the air, and you know you are on the idyllic island of Grenada. It is known as the Isle of Spice, because there are more spices per square mile here than any other place in the world. It was first discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1498 and was under rule by the French and British until it became independent in 1974. Yet, its rich colonial history has remained and influenced the culture and cuisine without the onset of overdevelopment. Unlike some of the developed neighboring islands, there are no hotels higher than a palm tree and the island is free of any large hotel chains or fast-food franchises, and life remains the same as it has been for years. There are plenty of activities for the whole family to indulge in. For nature lovers, the Grand Etang National Park is situated in a rainforest with a multitude of waterfalls and white-water rafting areas, some of which are accessible by car and others can be accessed by experienced hikers. The highlight is the Grand Etang Lake in the center and also Lake Antoine, which was formed in the crater of an extinct volcano. For naturalists, make sure to visit Laura’s Herb & Spice Gardens located in St. David’s, which grows every herb that can be found on the island to cure just about every ailment known to man; even cancer can be combatted with the local Soursop juice, or diabetes can be reversed with cinnamon. For historians, step back in time to the 1800s at the River Antoine distillery, the oldest functioning water-propelled distillery in the Caribbean that still makes rum in the same fashion as they did over 200 years ago. One of the best things about Grenada is the 40 secluded white sand beaches throughout the island that are all open to the public. Grand Anse has the widest and calmest stretch of beach and is home to some of the top hotels on the island. Sail the high seas of the Caribbean and dip into the cool waters during a romantic sunset or take a snorkeling cruise around the Grenadine island with Savvy’s Sailing Adventures. As founder and captain, Danny is a wealth of knowledge on the high seas, and he also makes a killer rum punch made with fresh-squeezed tropical juices. Explore the mysterious and fascinating Mollinaire Underwater Sculpture Park as you swim alongside colorful tropical fish.

Where to Stay For quiet luxury, visit the boutique Mount Cinnamon Resort & Beach Club. Enjoy spectacular views from the hillside setting of these contemporary duplex villas complete with living rooms and kitchens that are decorated in different color palettes that represent the Caribbean, featuring local artwork from West Indies artists. To enjoy watersports, there is a private beach club available to guests and a beautiful pool. For more cozy accommodations, book a Cinnamon Suite with expansive views of the cerulean blue bay to St. Georges. The cheerful rooms reflect the colors of sand and sea awash in blues and beiges. These 500-square-foot luxuriously appointed aeries feature a couch and sitting area, a king bed and private balconies to enjoy the balmy island trade winds.
Gastronomy Grenada’s cuisine is like a melting pot of the different cultures that have at some point ruled this tiny country with a heavy influence in seafood and stews that layer different spices. Experience fine Grenadian cuisine at the onsite restaurant Savvy’s, which serves a mix of traditional West Indian and Caribbean cuisine with local seafood specialties and locally sourced ingredients from their own gardens or nearby farms. Enjoy beautiful views of the bay and twinkling lights of the city. For a romantic evening, book a private dinner under the stars on the beach as you dip your toes in the sand with the gentle lull of the bay and watch the sun set into the deep blue ocean. Dine and “lime” (a popular Grenadian term that refers to hanging out or lounging) on the bay with the locals every Wednesday at the Dodgy Dock
when you can choose the catch of the day from the local fisherman and have it cooked in front of you. Linger a bit for some local beer or rum cocktails and jive to the live music in Grenada’s “city that doesn’t sleep,” where the festivities last until the wee hours of the morning. How to Get There The best way to travel to the Island of Spice is on a daily nonstop flight from JFK on JetBlue Airlines that will whisk you away to paradise. mountcinnamongrenadahotel.com sailingsavvy.com

he might have grown up playing sports in a boy’s world, but with an all-star attitude, Ann Liguori always comes out swinging, whether it’s on the golf course or in her career. Ann, a trailblazer and dynamo in sports broadcasting, owns her own content, is a sports talk show host, correspondent, Executive Producer, author, business owner and philanthropist. She’s overcome tremendous obstacles in the male-dominated world of sports broadcasting and thrives in her field of choice. She’s always had high aspirations, has achieved them all and is still going strong.
much sports meant to me and my Mom and Dad would drive us to all our practices and games, every day of the week.”
As a naturally gifted athlete, Ann could outrun the boys in her neighborhood, and she was often the first one picked to join any team. Upon entering junior high school, there were no sports for girls to compete in at the time at her school, except to join the cheerleading squad, so she and a friend put together a track team to compete in AAU meets. In high school, after Title IX was passed, Ann competed in volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter and doubled in track and field and tennis in the spring, earning 16 Varsity letters. Her high school at the time didn’t have a girl’s tennis team, so she played on the boy’s team and played #1 singles her senior year. Ann, who has always been an anomaly, enjoyed the challenge and won most of her matches.
They might not have awarded many athletic scholarships to girls at the time where she grew up in Brecksville, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, but Ann was able to get an academic scholarship to the University of South Florida, in Tampa, Florida, where she walked on to the women’s tennis team. Between her sports skills and smarts, Ann was well on her way to breaking into the broadcasting business. After being one of only 25 student graduates across the country to earn a fellowship with the International Radio and Television Society, Ann was able to follow her ambitions in the Big Apple. She started out at CBS Sports where she was an assistant and worked on The NFL Today Show and became a freelance statistician at Wimbledon and the US Open for HBO. Ann eventually became a freelance writer for the sports pages of USA Today in addition to working as a freelance producer for the ABC Sports Radio Network, where she made quite a memorable impression early on.
“Sports is so important for girls and boys to learn and play,” explained Ann. “It teaches skills that young people can use for the rest of their lives. I learned so much from being an athlete and competing in sports — how to win and lose, sportsmanship, how to deal with pressure and adversity. Plus, it’s important to be physically fit! My parents were athletic, and my father was the Manager of my brother’s Little League teams and encouraged us to pursue the sports we loved. They realized how
Despite her talents playing a variety of sports, Ann never wanted to be a professional athlete. Rather, she had big dreams of becoming a sports broadcaster and talk show host. “When I was a little girl, I watched a woman named Ruth Lyons host a TV show in Cincinnati, where I was born. She was a trailblazer in the talk show genre, and she made a big impression on me at such an early age.”
“I worked with the legendary sports commentator Howard Cosell during my stint at ABC Sports Radio Network. And during my first week there, much to the dismay of the studio engineer, I called Howard at home to advise him that he had made a mistake
in his commentary and asked if he could re-do that one line, and we’d edit it. The piece had aired before my shift and was going to be repeated and sent out to all the ABC radio affiliates later that afternoon. The engineer tried to talk me out of my calling Howard at home and asking Howard to re-do something! And then when Howard actually answered the phone, the engineer almost fell out of his chair! I introduced myself and politely asked him to re-do the one line in his commentary. There was a long pause at the other end of the phone line and then I heard his iconic voice. He said to me, ‘Do you know who I am young lady? This is Howard Cosell, I don’t make mistakes.’ Well, how do I respond to that, I thought?! I quickly replied, ‘Mr. Cosell, I realize you normally are flawless. If you re-do this one line, I can edit it and it WILL be perfect.’ He sounded annoyed as he grunted a few times, but he ended up redoing the line and that was that! I was 24 years old at the time and after hearing Howard’s initial response, thoughts that my career would be over quickly if I couldn’t get him to work with me raced through my head. There I was, calling one of the biggest names in sports broadcasting at home, a few days after I started working there. He was a very intimidating person; people shook in their shoes when Howard walked down the hallways at ABC. After that call, he never forgot my name and he always took the time to talk with me when I saw him in-person.” That nail-biting moment was one of many that have contributed to her success as Ann continued to blaze her own path in sports broadcasting.

Ann’s first on-air break was reporting on tennis at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles for ABC Radio Sports Network. “I was hired as a producer at those Olympic Games and they needed someone to cover tennis, which was a demonstration sport back then. They knew I played tennis and was knowledgeable about the sport, so they sent me! After that, I became a ‘stringer’ for the Radio Network, covering every professional team in New York, interviewing the players, sending audio clips to the Network, reporting at the games. It was so much fun and a great way to meet a lot of people in the sports world.” In addition, Ann’s entrepreneurial spirit kicked in and she put together a weekly sports commentary called ‘Ann Liguori in the Line-Up’ and brought in her own sponsor, Miller Lite, and her commentary was syndicated on radio stations throughout New England. “I enjoyed creating these commentaries and shows and connecting with sponsors to make it all happen. Plus, it helped pay the rent!” In 1987, WFAN was launched, the first all-sports radio station in the country. Ann was asked to host a weekly show and ‘Hey Liguori, What’s the Story’ was born. She became the first woman to host her own call-in sport’s show there, which aired every weekend for over 25 years. Ann continues to work for the station as their golf and tennis correspondent and during golf season, hosts a ‘Talkin’ Golf’ Show. She has covered 21 consecutive Masters, US Open Golf Championships, PGA Championships, every Ryder Cup since Brookline in 1999 and 37 straight US Open Tennis Championships! Ann has also been a talk show host and correspondent at six Olympic Games, covering a variety of sports including men’s and women’s alpine, figure skating, hockey, track and field, basketball and gymnastics. “I have so many stories from covering the Olympics, from interviewing both Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan as the entire world watched them compete against each other at the 1994 Winter Olympics just months after Harding’s ex-husband orchestrated an attack on Kerrigan; doing play-by-play of skiers like Alberto Tomba, Herman Maier (the Hermanator) and his amazing comeback in winning an Olympic Gold Medal after his horrific wipeout in 1998 at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, that I called, ‘live,’ on the air; to Lindsay Vonn, Bode Miller; being a color commentator during the USA women’s basketball final in the 1998 Summer Olympics, which set the stage for the creation of the WNBA.” This trailblazer, who created many of her own opportunities in sports broadcasting, has seen more opportunities openup for women through the years. “But real progress will
be made when more women run sports networks and companies and emerge in decision-making capacities.” Though it wasn’t easy, Ann transitioned into the television sphere. A programming executive at MSG Network told her she loved her work and could offer her a weekly time slot for a show but couldn’t pay her. Ann saw a window of opportunity and grabbed it. Ann soon made her mark creating, hosting, producing, selling and distributing her own weekly show, ‘Sports Innerview with Ann Liguori.’ She put her own production company together and Sports Innerview featured Ann interviewing an ‘A List’ of sports legends from Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Wilt Chamberlain and Jim Brown, Bart Starr and Gordie Howe, to Billie Jean King, Arthur Ashe, Annika Sorenstam, Wayne Gretzky, Jimmy Connors and Brett Favre. Ann interviewed over 400 legends for this show alone. ‘Sports Innerview with Ann Liguori’ first aired on MSG Network and then Ann started clearing and distributing the show on regional sports cable networks throughout the country. Ann pounded down doors on Madison Avenue, got meetings with top advertising executives and despite much resistance, was able to get sponsors for the show including Volvo, Dunkin’ Donuts, Federal Express and long-time support from Sharp Electronics who came in as the show’s title sponsor and Tourism Ireland and Travelers, who continue to sponsor Ann’s radio shows. “The Sports Innerview show is my legacy,” says Liguori. “To put this award-winning weekly cable show together from A to Z: hosting, producing, acquiring the sponsors, distributing, syndicating, researching, booking the guests and maintaining the rights to the content; it aired for 17 years and required intense focus, commitment and a skill set that I didn’t know I had! It was immensely challenging but incredibly rewarding to create this treasure chest of content.” “Many of the advertising executives I was able to meet with, looked at me as if I had three heads! They couldn’t understand the concept of a woman hosting or getting sponsors for my own show back then. For every sponsor who said ‘yes,’ I had 20 other doors slammed in my face, but it all worked out beautifully through the years as I learned how to maneuver around the obstacles and stayed positive.” The ‘Sports Innerview with Ann Liguori’ cable show aired during the years that Ann was also hosting her weekly ‘Hey Liguori, What’s the Story’ show on WFAN-NY. “It was an incredibly hectic time in my career but so exhilarating!” And on top of those two shows, another opportunity came

her way. Ann became one of the ‘original’ hosts on The Golf Channel with her own prime-time show, Conversations with Ann Liguori. Ann interviewed a long A-list of celebrities, including Sylvester Stallone, Celine Dion, Matthew McConaughey, Kevin Costner, Joe Pesci, Smokey Robinson, Charles Schulz of Peanuts fame, Amy Grant, Vince Gill, to name a few, while golfing with them. In many cases, the backstory was just as entertaining as the story that aired on her show. “I would golf with a different celebrity every episode. I would be on a golf course with Kevin Costner and the next week it was Johnny Bench, or Jim Brown or Joe Pesce. I booked guests from the worlds of Hollywood, music, business, sports. I really enjoyed using golf as a vehicle to get to know these personalities. My first show for The Golf Channel was with Sylvester Stallone, and I had to convince him that it was going to be about golf, not about his personal life. The Golf Channel wasn’t on the air yet and I was shooting several shows to put them in the can, as we say, before the network launched. Jim McLean, well-known golf instructor and a friend, who had heard I was going to be hosting this show, called me on a Sunday to ask if I wanted to fly down to the Doral Hotel in Miami, where he was the head of the Learning Center there, as he was going to be giving Stallone a golf lesson the very next day. I quickly grabbed a suitcase and while rushing to JFK in a taxi to catch a flight to Miami, I called and hired a production crew based in Miami, got in touch with my stylist and put the shoot together in a matter of minutes. Early Monday morning my production crew set up in a gorgeous room at the spa at the Doral. As soon as we were ready, Jim McLean called me from the Pro Shop. ‘I have good news and bad news,’ he said. ‘The good news is Sylvester Stallone is here. The bad news is he doesn’t want to do the interview because he doesn’t know what The Golf Channel is.’
80 | resident.com
I didn’t panic although I had invested the money to hire the crew and I knew there had to be a way to make it happen so I jumped in a golf cart and raced from the Spa to the driving range where Stallone had gotten out of his limo to hit balls. I approached Stallone on the range, and introduced myself and explained what The Golf Channel was all about, that it was going to go on the air in less than a week and that the interview would be about his passion for golf and what he brings from his career to the game. He never hesitated in saying, ‘Okay, let’s do it!’ But at that point my crew had broken down all their equipment and followed me to the range. Always the perfectionist, I wanted it to be set up back in the beautiful spa with perfect lighting, not on the range where I was convincing Stallone to do the show. So, I asked my stylist to stall him for a bit while my crew went back to the Spa to set up again. Once we were about to start, Stallone’s agent was pacing behind the cameras and told me I only had five minutes! I explained to the agent that the show was a halfhour long and that I needed at least 30 minutes for the interview and then we would follow Stallone around on the golf course and get footage of him playing and having some fun. The agent finally agreed. I knew my first question had to be one that would make Stallone and his agent relax. So, I said, ‘Sylvester, you’re a movie man extraordinaire, you collect art, you write novels, you play polo and now golf. You’re such a Renaissance Man…” You could see him immediately relax. His body language changed. He smiled and off we went on an interview adventure. He was wonderful! Very engaging. Very bright! And he loved talking about golf and his success story. He enjoyed the interview just as much as I did, apparently. After we finished, he told me, he was ready for his sequel!” Another memorable moment on the golf course occurred when Ann played with Celine Dion and her late husband, Rene Angelil. The power couple, who had purchased a public golf course and turned it into their own private retreat, opened-up about how they used golf as a way to spend quality time
together. “The show is more about using golf as a vehicle to get to know people,” explained Ann. “A guy I worked with when I was a freelance statistician for HBO at the US Open and Wimbledon, Michael Whelan, had been following my career and called me to ask if I’d be interested in creating and hosting a show for them on this new ‘Golf Channel’ network. With no hesitation, I came up with the idea of the show, over the phone, in about five minutes. I knew it would be fascinating. I’m grateful to Michael that he believed in me and reached out. “Conversations with Ann Liguori’ aired for the first six years of The Golf Channel’s inception and all these years later, I still have people tell me how much they enjoyed the show!” In her book titled A Passion for Golf: Celebrity Musings about the Game, Ann shares many stories and the interviews from this show and poignant behind-the-scenes stories with the many stars she connected with. Throughout her career, Ann has spoken with great storytellers in the sports world, including Wilt Chamberlain, who claimed in his book that he had slept with 20,000 women, as well as famed football player Jim Brown, who had become incensed when a caller on Ann’s show on WFAN, asked about allegations that he had thrown his girlfriend off of a balcony at his home in the Hollywood Hills. From Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams to Smokey Robinson, Pete Rose, Brett Favre and Gordie Howe, Ann has many interviews under her belt in which her guests open-up and reveal sides of themselves, seldom seen or talked about. The next step for Ann is to host and produce a documentary about her career and the many legends she has interviewed, and tell the many ‘stories behind the stories’ about her own storied career, and the careers of the many legends she has, and still, connects with. Ann is also working on another book to “preserve these timeless stories and interviews” so that many people, both young and old, can enjoy them and learn from this treasure chest of history.

Ann splits her time between her homes in the Orlando area and Westhampton. She is as passionate about her philanthropic efforts as she is about her production company. Ann lost her father to stomach cancer while she was still in college before tragedy struck again just a year and a half later when her brother, Jim, passed away from leukemia. She was asked to host a charity golf tournament for the American Cancer Society 21 years ago and 11 years ago, The Ann Liguori Foundation was founded, raising money for a variety of not-for-profits that focus on cancer research and prevention. Just this past June, she hosted the 21st Annual Ann Liguori Foundation Charity Golf Classic at Westhampton Country Club. Every year, the charity golf tournament is held at a prestigious golf course in The Hamptons. Friar’s Head, Maidstone, Atlantic, Sebonack Golf Club, The Bridge, are some of the courses that have hosted Ann’s popular golf outing. The Ann Liguori Foundation also created the Ann Liguori Foundation Sports Media Scholarship that NY-Women and Communications (WICI) administer every year for college students hoping to pursue a career in sports media and the Ann Liguori Foundation supports the Association for Women in Sports Media (AWSM) Champions Mentorship Program. After living in New York City for 25 years and enjoying The Hamptons on the weekends, Ann moved to The Hamptons full-time, where she shares a home with her significant-other of 15 years, Scott Vallary, her best friend and golf partner, and their 14-year-old golden retriever, Skye. “I love the beauty and tranquility of the Hamptons and using my office here as my home base and studio works out nicely. I enjoy heading into Manhattan for meetings and events, but I prefer living on the East End.” Ann shares in the care of her 93-year-old mother, Cecilia, with her two siblings, Jean and Dan. Ann describes her Mom as “my biggest inspiration and strength” and knows that “family is the most important thing in life. My family, including my sister Jean and brother-in-law Steve, my brother Dan, my niece Madison, nephew Christian and
Scott’s family, all try to get together as much as we can. Family is everything! I cherish the time we all spend together.” As a businesswoman, Ann is also a Brand Ambassador for Dune Jewelry, as well as Peakvision Sunglasses, which she described as “the best lens of any sunglasses I’ve ever worn. It’s like seeing in high definition. They are great for golf or any sport. I wear them all the time.” Ann collaborated with Dune Jewelry CEO and Designer Holly Daniels Christensen on a sophisticated jewelry collection they named the ‘Hamptons Rope Collection,’ which includes a necklace, earrings, a bracelet, ring and cufflinks. With each piece, you can select sand from your favorite beach or golf course which are incorporated into the hand-crafted jewelry pieces. Customers can either choose sand from the thousands of beaches on their web site from all over the world or send in their own element. Here is the link to view and order the collection: https://dunejewelry.com/collections/hamptonslong-island-rope-jewelry “When we started this collection, Holly, who’s an incredibly talented designer and dynamo business woman, asked me what my tastes were in jewelry and we came up with a gorgeous line that reflects the elegance and style of The Hamptons. Each piece has a nautical feel to it with roping around the perimeter of the designs. “It’s amazing how different and how beautiful the sand is from each location. Some of the sand that I wear in the pieces include sand from Doonbeg Golf Club, a club I’ve been a member of since they opened, in southwest Ireland; sand from Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland where they hosted the Open Championship this past July; sand from the Abaco Club in the Bahamas; sand from Westhampton Beach near where I live; and sand from the pink beaches in Bermuda. I’m also involved in DuneGolf.com in which they make ball markers, divot tools, wine stoppers, key chains and many other pieces with sand from a golf course on one side and the club’s logo on the other. Ann enjoys playing golf around the world and accepts invites to play in celebrity, charity
tournaments and pro-ams. Ann was one of a few female celebrities to play in the Bob Hope Classic, a PGA Tour event held in LaQuinta, California, when she competed in 2011. She’s a regular competitor in the Scotty Medlock-Robby Krieger Invitational, the Steve Azar Delta Soul, the Team Gamaz Foundation Charity Golf Classic, the Marty Lyons Foundation Golf Tourney, the Ed Lucas Foundation Golf Classic, to name a few, and in 2020, Ann will also play in the BMW Charity ProAm. Ann is an Ambassador for Tourism Ireland and this past July, after covering the Open Championship held at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, Ann was part of a golf media trip where they played stunning links and parkland courses in Donegal, Sligo and outside of Dublin. A few years ago, Ann visited South Africa with Pro Golf Africa Safaris where she played 7 courses, went on 5 safaris and visited a number of wineries in Stellenbosch. Ann co-hosted with Chip Beck, a Premier Golf - Viking River Cruise after the 2018 Ryder Cup, from Paris to Normandy. “Chip is one of golf’s greatest Ambassadors and it was an honor to be on this river cruise with Chip and his wife, Karen.” Ann is also involved in helping to grow the game of golf. The United States Adaptive Golf Alliance (USAGA) and their member-organizations connect people with disabilities to golf instruction and tournaments. “Individuals who overcome a disability to learn the game are so inspiring and to see the joy on their faces when they play, is heart-warming.” How has Ann sustained such a successful and longstanding career? “Having a passion for what you do is the key,” says Ann. “Having an unlimited imagination helps as well as drive, determination, an intense work ethic and a positive attitude. You know the saying, ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going.’ That’s so true in our competitive world. Everyone’s journey includes up and downs. Don’t let the ‘downs’ defeat you. Pick yourself up and reach for the sky.” The sky is indeed the limit for this star sports broadcaster, who has interviewed some of the world’s biggest athletes and entertainers and who has become quite the legend in her own right.

MEL ROBBINS’ ROCKET SHIP Beginning Her Rise to Popularity By Tammy Mark
“5-4-3-2-1” That’s Mel Robbins’ mantra, and the motivational message that launched her out of bed and onto the CBS soundstage. An international best-selling author and most sought out female speaker in the world, Robbins began her rise to popularity after introducing her sciencebacked “5 Second Rule” during a TEDx Talk, which has over 20 million views to date. Her work has been translated into 36 languages. Robbins receives emails from fans around the world, while others wait hours in line to talk to her. With three #1 audiobooks on Audible, numerous YouTube videos and daily snippets of wisdom on Instagram, Robbins reaches almost two million people a day online. Her messages clearly resonate with many, and will soon reach so many more as her new daytime talk show, The Mel Robbins Show, blasts off in September. With all of her success Robbins still considers herself a work-in-progress. Prior to her speaking career, Robbins worked as a criminal defense attorney and a legal analyst for CNN. The Ivy-educated married mother of three is smart and spirited, yet very willing to share her very human moments with her followers. We sat down with Robbins to talk about the new show, her personal struggles, and how we can all implement her lessons to launch our own lives and soar to greatness. Can you tell me a little about your upbringing? I grew up in the Midwest, mostly in Michigan in a tiny little town called North Muskegon. I went East for college and law school and met my husband out East -- and my parents are still upset about that! But we see them all the time and have a super tight-knit family. Sounds like you had a good support system growing up? Incredible! My grandparents were cattle farmers in upstate New York, and my dad is the son of Austrian immigrants who came to the United States and opened a bakery in New Jersey. My dad went on to medical school and had his own practice and my mom had a retail store, so I was raised by small business owners and the kind of family where we wait to eat dinner until mom and dad are home.

You’ve become a tremendous hit because of your message, but also because of your relatability, yet you have this amazing upbringing and so much past success. What would you say to somebody who may not have had the best circumstances, or had normal circumstances and then lost their way? That’s what this show is about. Sometimes the hand that you’ve been dealt in life isn’t great and the secret is realizing that it’s not about the cards you’ve been dealt, it’s about how you play them. Is there privilege in this world? Of course. Are there people that are born into circumstances

that put them ahead of you in some way? That’s always going to be true, but, when you recognize the fact that you always have a choice about what you’re going to think and do in response to where you are, that’s where the power is. What’s your vision for the show? What I want to do is create a show that is a daily destination that is empowering, that’s entertaining, that’s tactical and that shows you how you can makes changes to the way that you think, to the way that you look at yourself, and that has a meaningful impact on the type of future that you create for yourself. I am on an absolute mission to make an impact in people’s mental wellness and an impact on people’s ability to take control over their lives. You’ve had some of your own trip-ups along the way? Absolutely! Life tested me in a major way. 2008, a pretty lousy year for a lot of people, was a very lousy year for my husband and me. He had gone into the restaurant business, it was going under, we had secured that business with our entire life savings, I had lost my job, we were $800,000 in debt. I was reaching for alcohol, I was snapping at my kids, I was angry at my husband…I was spiraling. I was spending all my time complaining, worrying, hating myself, allowing depression and anxiety to consume me. I was struggling to get out of bed.
Is that when you created the 5 Second Rule? My life changed with one decision. One morning when the alarm went off, instead of lying there and letting that bed swallow me whole, and letting all of the problems that felt so overwhelming fill my mind, I decided that I would launch myself out of bed like a rocket, so fast that I would beat that window in which all of the self-doubt, fear and anxiety come in. So I went 5,4,3,2,1 like NASA, and I stood up; it was the moment my life changed. It took about five days. I would insert a thought that was positive and more exciting than the fears that were dominating. My entire mindset changed, I went off medication and haven’t had a panic attack or a bout of anxiety since. Did you have these struggles during law school and throughout your career? Of course. Most of us are very good at putting up a front on the outside, and a lot of us are very good at being busy and doing things, but it’s the inner world that matters. You could drink all the kale smoothies on the planet and still be wildly dangerously unhealthy if your mindset is unhealthy. You could have millions of dollars in the bank but you can be bankrupt mentally if you hate yourself. I was losing that inner battle for years. People could look at me on the outside and say well she seems to have it all, but the truth is, I struggled with anxiety
for 30 years. I had tremendous post-partum depression. Even though I could get a job and do things that looked impressive on the outside, I really hated myself on the inside. Can you use the 5 second rule to change other habits? The 5 Second Rule can be used to either push yourself forward when normally you shrink or edit yourself, or to pull yourself away from things that are destructive. So, 5,4,3,2,1 walk away from the alcohol, if you’re impulsive and it gets you in trouble, 5,4,3,2,1 will silence you. Any other great catchphrases? I like the phrase “Do It Anyway”, because it acknowledges that you have an excuse or a fear. So acknowledge that you don’t feel like going to the gym or that you don’t want to make that cold call – okay, do it anyway. Too many of us spend way too much time thinking about what we need to do instead of doing what we need to do. Are you excited about filming in New York? I think New York City is the greatest city on the planet and we’ve told all three of our children that you need to spend at least some part of your life living here. I’m absolutely thrilled to be back here and taping at CBS Broadcast Center – it’s the greatest most vibrant energizing city in the world.

ALEKSANDRA KARDWELL How to Find, Hire and Keep the Right Domestic Professionals By w. a. muller What is the most common hiring mistake people make? One of the main hiring mistakes I see is the failure to properly define what and who is needed for the job at hand. This is probably the main cause of frustration, unnecessary expense, and failed employeremployee matches. Considering household culture is a big part of this. You want to hire someone who has not only strong experience and skills, but also a personality and worldview that fits well with the culture at your residence. If you could give only one piece of advice to household employers what would it be? My top advice would be to be clear on your position’s requirements and the type of person you want. By thinking through what and who you need, you’ll massively increase your chances of finding a great employee who will stay with you for years into the future. What are some things that you like to see on a resume? In addition to the core skills required of a given job, I also like to see a logical work progression and tenures of at least a few years at each position listed. A track record of long-term positions in the same

area provides strong evidence that the person is committed to their field and can provide good, consistent service to employers. What are some tips for conducting successful interviews? To conduct successful interviews, it’s important to remember that your goal is not simply to get to know the candidate. It’s to find out information about the applicant and to educate them about the position you have available. One useful tip is to have your job description handy when you do the interview to make sure you address all the key parts of the job. Also, be careful not to let “gut feelings” guide your decision. It’s well established that interviewers’ first impressions are often incorrect. Is it okay to rely on reference letters alone for reference checks? Reference letters provide a great way to get important information about candidates. However, it’s best to verify the letters. And while I don’t recall ever receiving a reference letter that I found to be fake, I still believe it’s important to call references to verify letters. If you cannot reach a reference by phone, then trying to obtain a reference by email is a good way to go.
Tell us a bit about the importance of running background checks on applicants. Background checks offer one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to reduce avoidable risks in the hiring process. Many studies show it’s very common for job applicants to be less than totally truthful with information they write on their resumes and provide in interviews. By running background checks for, say, $35 per applicant, employers can make sure that applicants’ histories are without problems. Since domestic professionals work in the home and so closely with family members, background checks are a must. Give us a few examples of what people can do to keep their household staff for the long-term. Some of the key things you can do to keep great employees are providing market-competitive compensation, which includes annual salary increases; maintaining a healthy household culture; and showing appreciation for work well done. Frequent “thank yous” and small gifts such as birthday cards offer great, low-cost ways to keep your domestic staff happy.

CAITLIN MEISTER Top NYC Tutor By w. a. muller HEAD OF HER CLASS: Top NYC Tutor Caitlin Meister Gaining National Profile and Prominent Clientele for her Inventive Methods and Artistry.
says. “I use my background in chemistry to provide academic support to amazing students throughout the city, and my colleagues and clients show the utmost respect for my artistic pursuits and the way that they inform my teaching.”
Caitlin Meister had a dilemma: How to pursue her life-long love of teaching children while remaining dedicated to her successful career as a voiceover artist. Could she do both, finding harmony with two careers in concert? Caitlin refused to compromise. She found a way. And in the process, she built a model that makes it possible for artists to share their gifts with children without having to abandon their own work in the arts. Today, Caitlin is a recognized voiceover artist who has voiced characters for film, television, video games, radio, and audiobooks (you’ll know her when you hear her), and the founder of The Greer Meister Group, a prominent private tutoring and educational consulting practice based in New York. The skills that allow her to balance both careers successfully – and a home life with her husband and two children – have made The Greer Meister Group a success: focus, perseverance, problem solving, creativity, and the power of yet. “I never say that I can’t,” says Caitlin. “I say that I can’t yet. It’s the same mindset that I teach my students.” As the founder of The Greer Meister Group, she oversees a group of the most highly-qualified, accomplished, engaging, and creative tutors in the tri-state area. “We are private tutoring and educational consulting practice with a focus on academic independence and perseverance,” says Caitlin. “We give students the tools that they need to achieve their goals. We believe that tutoring should teach content and strategies that students can replicate to be successful independently – not only with a tutor by their side. If we’ve done our job well, we’ve put ourselves out of a job.” She dedicates herself to finding the brightest minds to teach the most precious minds. “Our tutors have interests and passions that go beyond just one discipline, which helps students free themselves from the limitation of thinking that someone has to be only a ‘math person’ or only ‘an artist’ to the exclusion of other fields,” she says. “Our model attracts brilliant teachers who would not be teaching if we hadn’t found a way for them to be dedicated to their students and continue to pursue their artistic passions.” Among her group are Ivy League graduates, published authors, internationallyrenowned performers, learning specialists, and more who work with children on content mastery, cognitive flexibility, resilience, and academic independence and perseverance. Like Chelsea Retzloff, a 33-year-old chemist and dancer in Brooklyn. “Working with the Greer Meister Group has given me the ability to teach and give back to the community while working as an artist/dancer in NYC,” Retzloff

Says Caitlin: “Tutoring, when done well, is never a burden and never a crutch. Kids learn best when they’re having fun. Anyone who tells you that tutoring has to look one certain way is stuck inside a comfort zone that serves the adult first rather than serving the child first.” She continues, “I consider my work successful if we have given parents peace of mind and provided children with confidence to go into the classroom feeling supported and resilient, not inflexible and overwhelmed. Yes, I want my students to know the material, and I want more. I want my students to know that they have the tools to figure out anything new or unfamiliar.”

GEORGES BERGÈS & JEAN SCHMIEDEL Aiming to Elevate the Art World, One Artist at a Time By julie sagoskin Photographed By Heinz Hammer
A
side from selecting masterpieces to hang in his gallery, Georges Bergès, the founder of Georges Bergès Gallery, has made it his mission to mentor his artists and help them grow their careers in the cut-throat art industry. According to this art aficionado and businessman, his artists “don’t just get a gallery, they get an ally. A lot of my artists become friends with each other. It’s like joining a family. The only reason I opened a gallery was because I wanted to help the artists and represent them in a better way. There was only so much I could do without a gallery.” While he currently represents artists from all over the world, he is bringing the Bergès touch to Berlin so that he can introduce his artists to the European market. “I love the city, it’s the feature of Europe, there’s so much energy and so many artists there from all over the world. It reminds me of New York from the 80s. I said I want to have a presence there
not just to sell to Europe and Germany, but to have the ability to create a feeling of artists and gallery and give them a global platform. I’m going to cities that I feel are young, dynamic, and that intuitively make me feel that this is the future. I felt that in Berlin, and Copenhagen as well.” This art dealer, who remains deeply devoted to his artists, might never have foresaw himself owning his own gallery, but is now growing faster than ever and is even hoping to expand into Mexico City and Asia after launching his new European base in Berlin. While he had worked with artists all his life, it wasn’t until he met an artist who he said “changed my life” that inspired him to turn a hobby into an all-consuming career in the art world. Georges has indeed cultivated a career in this creative and sometimes – or most times - crazy industry, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. With a
successful gallery and young daughter, his life looks like a very pretty picture! Georges’ gallery, which is comprised of works from artists who have become more like family, is also his greatest passion. “I don’t have a job. I haven’t had a job in many years, and it’s because I do what I love. The minute I don’t like an artist or start doing what I don’t like, it’s a job, and nothing is worth that. Every piece has to speak to me. I run my gallery spiritually and intuitively, and it’s a part of me.” This mentor and art dealer, who is an avid art collector himself, doesn’t just hang his artists’ works on his gallery walls, he helps them get onto museum walls. From getting them press to showcasing their work to the right clients, he views his artists’ success as his own success. Let’s just say you want Bergès to have your back, and artists know it, which is why he receives hundreds of submissions every week, or sometimes every day.

ART
Georges, who has to be touched by a particular piece in order to put it in his gallery, travels all over the world in order to gain a unique perspective on art and the way artists work from a global perspective. “It allows me to see a commonality between artists from all over. Carl Jung referred to the collective unconscious when he explained how when we look at certain art, it touches on the universality of the experience. When I look at different studios, I develop a sense of where the artist has transcended something. Picasso’s work transcended his own culture.” Upon visiting Berlin just a couple of weeks ago in order to meet with an artist whose work he will be showcasing in the fall, Bergès’ presence brought an unprecedented amount of media attention. Jean Schmiedel might be a well-known expressionist painter in his small town, but the fact that a New York gallery was coming to see him really upped his artistic ante! This also put Bergès on the German art world map just as he is preparing to make his mark on the international market. Kontakt, which will be Gallery’s fall opening show, will be showcasing the unique work of Germanborn figurative artist Jean Schmiedel in what will be his first solo exhibition in the United States. Kontakt, or ‘contact’ in English, will allow visitors to get up close and personal with Schmiedel’s work, which speaks to who we are and how we interact with each other and our surroundings. His pieces are meant to show how living creatures develop trust through eye contact and learn about attachment through physical contact. According to Schmiedel, “Contact can be wonderful and sustaining but, depending on each individual’s development and experiences, it also has the power to frighten and disturb.” This passionate painter always presents earnest portrayals of relatable characters and uncommon features. By using a variety of textures, colors and natural materials, Schmiedel’s style always shines through. By commonly using images of dogs and birds, this artist, who is often referred to as an “outsider’, is able to express a range of emotion. His dark animals are symbolic of the carnal energy which is part of Schmiedel’s artistic process and what he hopes others will see within themselves.
98 | resident.com
Schmiedel intends to move his using uneven paint application, Schmiedel makes artwork which he hopes will move his audience by using uneven paint application and guick gestures. You will definitely want to make contact with this Kontakt exhibit. In other breaking brushstroke news, Georges will be unveiling a prominent piece painted by close friends Nick Carone and Jackson Pollock. In addition to revealing this work, at the exhibition entitled, Three Mile Harbor Road, which is named after the street in the Hamptons where these artists lived in the 1950s, Georges explained that his artists will also benefit by seeing the relationship between different artists and how their collaboration became a legacy to their friendship. This personable art dealer who has personal relationships with his artists, is also trying to make the process of buying and selling art less pretentious: “Most galleries have become very transactional, so artists have gotten used to this strange world. They’re finding a non-responsive gallery world where they’re very aloof or just so small they can’t provide much, so I’m trying to fill that gap. A lot of galleries are acting like museums and museums are acting like galleries. Today galleries are very quiet and intimidating, artists are no longer welcome. Warhol and Basquiat hung out in places where they interacted and that forged a relationship, and galleries got better. I run my gallery very instinctually, it’s a reflection of me. I’m the type of dealer who is also a collector. I love the art. Sometimes it’s hard to sell it!” From displaying the works of emerging artists to those whose work can be found in the Guggenheim, Georges’ process of picking paintings is personal. Whether it’s abstract or impressionist, he knows which one is the one when he sees it – and which one might be the one for you. Georges, who is definitely an anomaly in the art world, is following in the footsteps of his idol, Leo Castelli, an art dealer from the 60s, who had his own unique philosophy on how to approach art. “He’s the main reason I run my gallery the way I run it. He founded Andy Warhol. What he was trying to do was say I don’t sell art, I place art. The fundamental
drive behind that is to stay authentic. What he says is yeah, you have money, but it’s not for you. It creates an authenticity, and more money will pour in when you’re authentic within yourself. Selling art should be different than selling a car or anything else. The minute we forget that, we lose sight of why we’re in it. A lot of people and galleries have forgotten that.” Aside from visiting his current artists, this dealer also travels to various destinations to discover new talent. When a friend suggested he should travel to meet a Syrian refugee artist living in Vienna, Georges flew there overnight, and after realizing his potential, decided to represent him. “This story really touches on migration, and it touches on the immigrant population in Europe and it captures how I work. We had a great connection and now he’s hanging in my gallery. I deal very honestly with my artists and this forces me to be authentic within myself. My committee of advisors are all in my head. It’s my artistic mentality.” After living in Alaska and Europe, this adventurous art dealer, who has an apartment in Soho as well as on the West Side, found his way back to New York: “New York is a challenge, it’s tough. You love to hate it, but you love it. It brings out the best and the worst in people. It gives you a lot of options in life, good and bad, and you have to have a very strong center to navigate that because you can easily get lost in the vices. I like to go to go to Woodstock a lot and get away from the city. At my core I’m very much a country person, but when I get away and leave the city for a week, I miss it! California feels like home to me, but I realized I can’t live there. I have a seven-year-old daughter and she’s born and raised in New York and my gallery is here. It’s given me so much. I’ve laid roots here very deeply.” He might be California born and bred, but New York has brought out the best in Bergès, who has been living in the city for 20 years now and refers to himself as a real New Yorker. Georges is definitely doing what he loves in the city that he loves - it doesn’t get much better than that! bergesgallery.com jean-schmiedel.de

ERIN McGEAN Painting and Pasting with Passion By Julie Sagoskin
W
hile she is best known for her original digital collages, Canadian artist Erin McGean was originally drawn to drawing and painting as a child, something she thinks has to do with her trying to find ways to entertain herself as an only child for most of her childhood. Erin, who is endlessly talented, started out painting

traditional themes, such as Canadian landscapes, and has since reinvented herself as an artist in the age of Instagram. “I joined Instagram in 2011, and I saw all this amazing digitally created art and photo editing. I downloaded Instagram by accident while looking for an editing
app and posted something when I didn’t even know what a post was. When I went back on the Instagram app, I had multiple photo likes and thus began my social media identity. I really got inspired and did more photography, then digital collage with my own photos of my kids or of nature—my recurring theme. The digital collage really consumed me for
five years, and then I realized I had missed the messiness and the studio environment and the tactile nature of creating traditional art. I started doing cut and paste, old school style analogue collage. I now combine the two. I might start a piece as cut and paste, then add more to the piece digitally. People really communicated in the early days of Instagram and it really broadened my audience.” In addition to having her work appear in group exhibits in Canada, New York, and most recently, Colorado, Erin, who puts all of her energy into her artistic endeavors, has also been commissioned
by Elle Magazine Canada, where she just made a full-page digital collage on the importance of a celebrity stylist. She has also made her mark with a massive mural, which you can find at the downtown Toronto hotspot Pastiche. This ever-evolving artist was even featured in this year’s Fashion Art Toronto Festival, which combines art and design. If you’d like to see some of her handmade collages in person, Erin also recently contributed to the Brooklyn Sketchbook Library in New York, with two recent sketchbook projects featuring Erin’s women and nature-inspired collages.
Since following her creative calling, Erin has never looked back, and she is already looking towards featuring her work in new exhibits. She even has a new series of collages that focus on women’s relationship to nature as well as how women are compared to nature. Her collages use traditional collage techniques along with digital technology to repurpose found imagery. Erin’s artistic drive, derived from her connection to nature and being a strong woman and mother, has resulted in some very thought-provoking and profound works. erinmcgean.com

MARCUS JANSEN Painter & Veteran By Bennett Marcus
Museum Collections Marcus Jansen began his art career 20 years ago, and his work is now in collections worldwide, including those of the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA), The New Britain Museum of American Art, The PERMM Museum of Contemporary Art, The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art, the Housatonic Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Julian Schnabel, Early Collector Like other artists in those days, he started out selling his paintings at the corner of Prince Street and Broadway in Soho. One of his first customers was the actor John Ortiz, who has appeared in movies like Carlito’s Way, who happened to be in the neighborhood shooting a film with Julian Schnabel. “He bought one of my first paintings when I set up on the street down there,” Jansen says. Art World Star That may sound like a typical New York story, but Jansen took an unlikely path to prominence in the highly competitive art world. Growing up in the Bronx and Queens, his family later moved to the town of Mönchengladbach, Germany, his father’s hometown, where he spent his teens. He often visited

relatives in New York, and on a 1986 trip there, Jansen met the pioneering graffiti artist West One, who had a profound impact on the course of his life. “He was the one who really inspired me to not only paint but to really become more artistically involved.” Military Service That’s when Jansen enlisted in the military, spending a decade serving overseas, including the Desert Shield and Desert Storm campaigns. Discharged in 1997, Jansen didn’t have much luck with art galleries in Germany and decided New York was the place to be. He stayed with his grandparents in the Bronx and worked Long Island catering jobs on weekends so that he could paint and sell his work in Soho. Robert Rauschenberg Marcus married, spent two years in Atlanta, had a son and moved to Fort Myers, Florida, where his parents were living. “The little one was born so we figured he needed familyA bit of kismet, it turned out that Robert Rauschenberg, who Jansen had long admired, was living in the area. He got to meet his idol, and they even showed together in local exhibitions. “It was ironic because I was a big admirer of Rauschenberg since I was a kid of 14, and here I was now living close to him and getting to know him. It was quite an honor for me.”
Ford Motors & Absolut Vodka Jansen’s work started getting noticed. In 2003, Ford Motors commissioned him to do paintings celebrating the company’s 100th anniversary. Commissions for Warner Bros. and Absolut Vodka followed, and he gained an international following. Guild Hall Emmy-winning filmmaker John Scoular, a friend of Jansen’s, decided to do a documentary about him; shooting began in Florida and the project grew to include footage in London and New York. The film, “Marcus Jansen: Examine and Report,” had its New York premiere at the East Hampton TV, Art & Film Festival. Philanthropy Jansen is active in the Southwest Florida Community Foundation, which helps support a variety of local causes, including veterans with PTSD, low-income children, housing and environmental issues.
