THE SEASON OPENS
Eric Dane, Suzanne Somers, Matthew Rhys, Isabelle Bscher, Robert Indiana, Linjie Deng, Friars Club, Hope Parfum, Peter Thomas Roth, Etain Health, OpenClear, & Education Pods
By R.Couri Hay with Photos by Patrick McMullan WHAT TO WATCH Perry Mason Matthew Rhys has struck gold again with his new HBO legal drama Perry Mason. This is a re-invention of the classic TV show from the 50s starring Raymond Burr. Perry Mason begins as a private investigator, working a sensational infant-kidnapping and murder case, before transitioning into the lawyer of the accused murderess. Rhys confessed, “In my head, I think I’d make a perfect spy, but in reality, I don’t think I’d fare very well.” Tatiana Maslany, known for her role in The Hunger Games, plays Sister Alice McKeegan, a controversial evangelist who says she can raise the baby from the dead; she said, “What excites me is the darker sides of people. The things that they don’t want to admit about themselves.” Juliet Rylance shines as Mason’s secretary Della Street. Absentia Amazon’s TV thriller Absentia is a sleeper hit and you can binge all three seasons over a weekend. Stana Stana Katic

Katic assays the role of hardcore FBI Agent Emily Byrne, who was kidnapped, tortured, and presumed dead — until she escaped her captors after six years. She now seeks revenge. Katic, who plays the strong female lead says, “I don’t believe in weak women; I believe women are powerful beings.” Tatiana Maslany, Hunky Patrick Matthew Rhys, Juliet Rylance Heusinger costars as Katic’s FBI agent husband, who remarried in her absence, thus creating a twisted love-triangle. Heusinger said, “There are a lot of sociopaths in the world, and they don’t always necessarily kill people; instead, they can walk into a room and make everyone think they’re the kindest, coolest, smartest, most interesting person in the room.” ART WORLD HAPPENINGS Hamptons Virtual Art Fair Rick Friedman opened the Hamptons Virtual Art Fair (HVAF) over Labor Day weekend and has

DR. ADAM J. RUBINSTEIN
When Honesty and Integrity Count Most in Choosing a Plastic Surgeon By Lauren Bens
I
f you want to make it in Miami – or at least look like you have - you will want to call Dr. Adam J. Rubinstein, a Board Certified and awardwinning plastic surgeon who is just as passionate about keeping his patients safe as he is about giving them the perfect shape. Dr. Rubinstein, a New York native who grew up in Brooklyn and attended Brooklyn College, has now been in practice for 18 years in South Florida. This dedicated doctor, who attracts patients from all over the world, specializes in surgical and cosmetic procedures for all parts of the face and body. He might be able to expertly hide away fat with a tummy tuck, but Dr. Rubinstein is a staunch patient advocate, devoted to bringing unethical plastic practices out into the open.
16 | resident.com
“There is a lot of information out there, and especially with digital media, people can portray themselves however they like. While you can get a lot of useful information on the internet and certain social media platforms, it’s not always so reliable. It’s hard for people to know how to protect themselves and ask the right questions. I try my best to bring honesty to this business.” In order to remain as transparent as possible, Dr. Rubinstein frequently films procedures on his practice’s Instagram page, and has made it his mission to educate others on what to look for when searching for the right surgeon. Whether it’s on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok or Snapchat, this scrupulous surgeon helps people understand what they should be wary of and even shows the less pretty side of plastics.
“We show live surgeries on our stories everyday so people can follow along. It’s easy to glamorize a perfect tummy and getting a pre-baby body back, but you don’t know how it really happens.” According to this surgical superstar, before getting your next breast augmentation, you will want to make sure that your plastic surgeon is Board Certified. Getting Board Certified might be a long and arduous process, but it helps to ensure that patients are being treated by the most qualified surgeons. “First you have to do both a general surgery and then a plastic surgery residency, which is not easy, and then you have to take written boards demonstrating that you have core knowledge,” explains Dr. Rubinstein. “You also have to collect cases over many months and submit that list of cases over a period of time
until board examiners eventually give you a short list of cases which you then have to put into presentation books. This includes everything from consultations to procedures to billing practices. The reason for this level of certification is to keep the public safe. Many people are also not aware that it’s not enough to simply be Board Certified, which is why it’s important to ask if your prospective surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, as that is the only board that certifies plastic surgeons. Otherwise, it is legal for any kind of doctor to perform procedures they are not properly trained in, including plastic surgery. Scarily enough, this happens way more often than you think. There is also a site called certificationmatters.org, which will tell you if a doctor is certified in a certain field. It’s easy to be fooled if they are certified in another field.” Dr. Rubinstein, who uses his platforms to dispense indispensable information surrounding plastic surgeons and their procedures, is now developing a new website that will allow the public to search for a doctor by name and subsequently get a free report. This will tell you not only if they are indeed Board Certified, but if so, by who, as well as if they are a member of any aesthetic societies, or if they have ever been sued or disciplined by a state medical board. This easy-to-use site provides all the information you need in one place. Another page of theirs, the @plasticsurgerytruths Instagram account, is based entirely on answering questions and giving people the critical information that they’re seeking. “I never give opinions,” explains Dr. Rubinstein. “I share public information that is already available. I regularly make videos to answer people’s questions, including my Exposed Series, where I uncover doctors who I think are being intentionally deceptive. I show the truth in these videos because I deeply believe that we need to shepherd our own profession by not allowing doctors to fool people and hide truths from patients. I don’t advise anyone whether or not go to a particular doctor, I simply tell them the truth and then they can decide for themselves.” This high-profile patient advocate is known just as much for his fabulous facelifts as he is for his fierce fights against deceitful doctors. When he became aware of a local high-volume, low-cost surgery clinic which had faced a string of serious complications, as well as multiple deaths, Dr. Rubinstein came to the rescue and started writing blog articles analyzing their death rate, which was many times higher than what is deemed acceptable. The practice even wound up suing him for the popularity of his post which
would pop up when the name of the center was typed into a search engine. Another consequence of trying to inform the public about scary surgeons? Being threatened by a celebrity doctor most known for his Kim Kardashian endorsement. “Dr. Simon Ourion paints himself as a cosmetic dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, but all he has is some training in internal medicine and anesthesia. He never completed either residency program and has no residency training in dermatology nor plastic surgery. Despite having his Beverly Hills practice sanctioned by the State of California about ten years ago due to two dozen counts of improper behavior, including letting a non-doctor perform a facelift, he was able to resume his normal operations after serving five years of probation. At the time my video about his conduct was released, he already had 30 lawsuits against his clinic, and additionally, nine which were against him personally. Right after I posted my videos about Dr. Ourian I began receiving fake negative reviews online. Being sued and having my reputation threatened with fake posts on my social media accounts and review sites is a necessary evil if I want to continue being the guy who stands up and does what’s right. Doctors should feel comfortable telling the truth.”
If you’re thinking of taking the plastic surgery plunge, make sure to visit Dr. Rubinstein’s Miami office or be your own advocate by visiting his social channels including his Instagram accounts, @drrubinstein and @plasticsurgerytruths, SnapChat @drrubinstein, and Facebook page @MiamiPlasticSurgeon and his website dr-rubinstein.com
When it comes to advising patients on selecting procedures, Dr. Rubinstein does what he does best – transparency! Whether it’s talking people out of certain procedures or steering them in a different direction, he gives his most honest and professional opinion. “It’s common for a new mom to self-diagnose and say she wants to get liposuction to lose the baby weight when in fact she really needs a tummy tuck,” says Dr. Rubinstein.” Dr. Rubinstein’s practice also implements the latest technologies and procedures, including CoolSculpting and Emsculpt, which reduces fat while building muscle in the abdomen and butt – the best part? It’s pain free and non-invasive. Another modern technique they use is Ellevate, which allows for doing a neck lift without leaving scars. It’s all about getting better results with less recovery time!

I
f you are looking for new and effective ways to stay healthy these days,NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker can help protect you from even pandemic-sized particles. This innovative topical gel blocks particles before they enter your nose, making it a gigantic gamechanger in the preventative space.

Originally invented by Ashok Wahi as a way to help one of his daughters deal with her debilitating allergies, NasalGuard, which is safe and drugfree, filters out harmful particles. “Think of it as a Brita for your nose,” explains Kanika Wahi, Mr. Wahi’s daughter, who now works for her father’s company at their headquarters in Somerville, NJ and holds a biomedical engineering degree. “Just
like when you apply sunscreen before going to the beach, NasalGuard is all about being preventive.” Though NasalGuard has been a popular particle blocker for many years, they are now working at warp speed to bring new products to the market in the wake of the pandemic. In an effort to fill the re-energized need for people wanting to
sized particles tend to be negatively charged. NasalGuard, a positively charged gel, creates a safe electrostatic field around the nasal passages, trapping the negatively charged particles and repelling the positive ones. “All you have to do is just apply a pin size drop around your nostrils and upper lip before heading out,” says Kanika. “Just like sunscreen, you want to make sure you apply it before going where you might be exposed. Plus, when you’re not inhaling all those pesky particles, it reduces your chances of experiencing symptoms as well. Each tube gives you about 150 applications when used as directed.” When it comes time to best gearing up for battle against virus-sized particles, NasalGuard is one of the safest and most scientifically proven measures you can arm yourself with. It is now possible to feel more secure on airplanes, as well as in homes, offices, hospitals and when taking public transportation. Each drop prevents the inhalation of so many different spectrums of particles, from virus sized particles to the more prevalent ones like dust and pollen floating all around us. Whether you choose the unscented or menthol variety, this drug-free find is safe for children of all ages as well as pregnant women.
In an effort to help healthcare workers fighting on the front lines, those working at NasalGuard began sending their products to area hospitals, and thus the Breathe Easier Donation Program was born. “We were receiving inquiries from nurses and aides asking to receive samples or to buy extra product. We eventually decided to make free donations for those making sacrifices and doing so much for us. This program is for anyone who wants to request samples for themselves and their team, they just have to show proof of profession and hospital and whoever they’re affiliated with.” So far, NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker has donated thousands of product to staff at RWJ Barnabas Health, Lenox Hill, Hackensack Meridian Health, Saint Barnabas Medical Center and University Radiology Group. The program now expands to support FireFighters and Families in Northern California due to the raging fires that leave toxic smoke in the air. keep themselves and their families healthy, the non-toxic NasalGuard is currently filing patents on new extensions of the same technology. This booming brand, which was cleared by the FDA years ago - even though they are categorized as a non-invasive general-purpose item, making them exempt from needing FDA registration going forward– is forging ahead faster than ever before in the fight against virulent viruses. Their scientists and engineers are currently doing more and more testing to stay on track. It’s time to unmask the truth about NasalGuard this easy-to-apply gel enhances the effectiveness of wearing a mask when applied first and lasts for up to seven hours. ANDREW DRAZAN Forging a Future in Addiction Treatment By Julie Sagoskin
A
ndrew Drazan represents the many Americans who are the adult children of an alcoholic. It’s that legacy that has driven his search for a better treatment for addiction, and to found Wellbridge, a new state-of-the-art addiction treatment and research center just outside of New York on the North Shore of Eastern Long Island near Riverhead, where he is CEO and co-founder.
eight years, but his tenacity and relentless focus kept the project moving forward. After a nine year journey, Wellbridge Addiction Treatment and Research officially opened May 18, 2020. And as Drazan likes to say, “now the real hard work begins.” “With the opioid epidemic ravaging the country, along with the rise in substance use and mental
“We are thrilled to be able to bring this kind of information and data that will allow Wellbridge to define what quality care is, and give both patients and their families the confidence they’re receiving the highest level of care with a clearly defined set of interventions and outcomes,” adds Drazan.
Drazan experienced the effects of addiction at a young age. One of three children, Drazan’s parents divorced when he was young, and his mother turned to alcohol and abused prescription medication to cope. She passed away at just 35 years of age, when Drazan was only nine, which left an emotional impact on her son that, like many, he did not confront for years.
Having witnessed how substance abuse affects the whole family, Drazan knows that it is truly a family disease. Along with an extensive family program to help everyone affected by addiction, Wellbridge offers a community education program to help reduce stigma and educate people about substance abuse and how it impacts our society. In addition to supporting the treatment and recovery of patients, a 200-seat auditorium, creative arts center, and music center will also be utilized for programming that supports the community at large.
It wasn’t until about 10 years ago, that Drazan, a successful businessman, husband, and father, started thinking back to his childhood, what it was like, and what had happened to his family. He wondered about the help his mother had received, the medications she had been prescribed, and if she would still be alive if the situation had been handled differently. These reflections led him ultimately to co-found Wellbridge – to help people in need, and their families, towards a more sustained path to recovery. Drazan’s journey began with learning everything he could about addiction – the causes and current treatments, policies, and the barriers that make getting help so difficult. He met with experts, clinicians, and researchers, as well as with academic institutions to learn about the latest addiction treatments. With his friends, Jan Burman and Steve Krieger of Engel Burman, the NY-based real estate company that provided the ideal location close to New York City, Drazan began planning the addiction center he knew was so desperately needed. As a proponent of evidence-based treatment, Drazan’s questions about the best clinical approach ultimately led him to a unique partnership with Northwell Health, the tri-state’s largest health care provider. Permits, approvals, and planning took more than

Historically, the addiction field has not been evidence or science-based. Wellbridge’s Center for Addiction Research is unique as it is working to bridge that gap between science and clinical practice in the addiction field, to assess patients during treatment, measure their progress, adjust their care according to quantitative and scientific measures.
For Drazan, Wellbridge’s role is to meet the needs of the people and families they serve. This sense of purpose keeps him focused on the mission of Wellbridge and raising awareness that there is hope and help out there.
health crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the need for addiction treatment and care is greater than ever,” says Drazan. “Additionally, there is a lack of new research needed for clinicians to apply the most effective treatments, so we have built the first addiction research center to be co-located on-site with the residential treatment program and partnered with a major health network.”
“From the front door, when you walk in, Wellbridge is respectful to the patient, to the family, it’s uplifting,” says Drazan. “It provides hope. It provides a feeling of care that is unprecedented in the addiction community.” Wellbridge is currently accepting patients for treatment and can be toured privately by appointment. 877.935.5274 wellbridge.org

HOLLY DANIELS CHRISTENSEN Celebrating a Decade as Founder and CEO of Dune Jewelry By Julie Sagoskin
W
hen it comes to turning her jewelry design dreams into a successful reality, Holly Daniels Christensen knows how to get to the top of the mountain, and if not a mountain, definitely a sand dune! Christensen, is celebrating the ten-year anniversary of her woman empowered empire, Dune Jewelry, which is known for its beautiful designs featuring natural elements from as far away as Indonesia. What started as a hobby for Holly, who always enjoyed creating handcrafted pieces from her home, has become a hugely popular jewelry line with loyal customers from all over the globe. Dune Jewelry creates tangible reminders of life’s most precious moments and connects people to places and experiences in a unique, meaningful way by handcrafting each design using sand or natural elements from thousands of memorable and iconic locations around the world. Holly, who had always hoped to build her own business, worked as a real estate agent during the first few years of Dune’s existence to finance her real dreams of owning and operating a company. She also made it her mission to reach out to her customer base on Facebook in an authentic and personal manner.
28 | resident.com
“This was when Facebook was purely organic which really allowed me to have constant contact with the people who were most important to the brand. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, I was creating brand loyalty while building small focus groups to explore what designs and travel locations would be most successful for us. Having that knowledge is integral to having a successful business. I truly believe that our customers are what has led to Dune’s success. I listen to them; I ask questions and I deliver on the promises that I make which in turn has created a beautiful community of people who love capturing their experiences in tangible reminders that they can carry with them always.” The hardworking Holly, who puts her heart into each handcrafted piece, started making beach sand jewelry at her kitchen table back in 2007. Her beloved Cape Cod beaches, where she grew up, sparked her desire to create personalized designs that hold special meaning and memories. Though she started making these unique necklaces, rings and bracelets for close friends and family, it wasn’t long before her designs started gaining popularity amongst admirers who wanted their own custom designs
made up of sand or elements from their upcoming trips. Holly soon embarked on jewelry making classes and the rest is, well, very haute jewelry history. Dune Jewelry was officially launched in 2010 and will be celebrating their 10th year anniversary in September 2020. Today, Dune has over 4,500 elements in their Sandbank to choose from, and customers continue to send in their own memories for bespoke designs. “Most recently, we’ve received soil from the Appalachian Trail, crushed granite from the Rocky Mountains, wedding flowers, funeral flowers, sand from the Hollywood Trail, infield dirt from Fenway Park, sand from the Pebble Beach golf bunker, and my personal favorite, crushed shells from the Big Island of Hawaii!” exclaimed Holly. These unique pieces, which come in various price points and metals, remain extraordinarily sentimental. Whether it’s sand from your local beach or your dream destination, you can showcase your most precious experiences in a lasting and wearable way. According to Holly, while the world becomes more digital, with most of our photos catalogued in our phones, Dune captures your memories in a unique way. “We began as the original beach sand jewelry
company and have evolved into the one and only experiential jewelry brand in the world. We capture experiences in every piece that leaves our studio and we offer a lifetime warranty and happiness guarantee knowing that customer satisfaction comes first.” While these unprecedented times have been hard on businesses of all sizes, Holly is determined to successfully take Dune into another decade. “Creating Dune has been the greatest adventure of my life, so while we’ve had many challenges over the years and especially now, my passion, creativity and vision remain the same, and I believe our journey is just getting started. This pandemic is the worst it’s ever going to get, so if we can make it through this, we can make it through anything. I continue to tell my team daily that this is an endurance game. We need to have mental and emotional strength and stamina to weather the storm. One of the most useful things that I’ve learned during this time is that I need to leave my maternal senses at the door when hiring new team members. It’s all about hiring for skillset, mindset and cultural fit. As we celebrate this 10year milestone, we’ll be launching a brand refresh and I’m excited about the prospect of adding more of the right people to our team. If there is anyone who can bounce back, it’s this boss babe! From awards to television appearances, Holly has taken Dune to another dimension. Dune won Small Business of the Year in 2016, landed on the Inc 5000 list in 2018, and was just recently named one of the ‘Top Ten Destination Jewelry Brands in
the World’ by “Global Traveler Magazine.” Holly has even appeared on EXTRA with Mario Lopez twice and she has a longstanding collaboration with Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover girl, Camille Kostek and has co-designed a collection with sports talk show host and golf correspondent Ann Liguori on Dune’s Hamptons Rope Collection and Dune Golf. Between balancing a staff of 22 full-time team members and two young daughters who are currently being home schooled, you must be wondering what Holly’s secret is when it comes to doing it all? Well, there is none. That’s because according to Holly, while balance is important, it’s not always possible, and that’s okay. “It’s an incredibly difficult time for working mothers right now and the most important thing is to give yourself grace and know that things don’t always need to be perfect.” What are some of this fierce boss lady’s favorite finds from her line? “I’m a sucker for the classics like our Wave Collection, but I also haven’t taken off my Delicate Destinations Sunburst Necklace and my Five Element Cocktail Ring since they launched. Also, we’ve been putting out some amazing home accents including our new picture frame and a variety of really pretty wine stoppers. My go-to hostess gift is a wine stopper filled with the recipient’s favorite beach or natural elements that are special to them - like flowers from their wedding - alongside a gorgeous bottle of wine. So special! And soon we’ll be launching our experiential candle collection with scents from Bermuda, Cape Cod, Italy and
Hawaii, to name a few. Our new candles are going to transport you to your favorite locale without ever leaving home. While home accents are a new category for us, it feels like a very natural progression.” Let’s just say that not even a pandemic can stop this powerhouse! In fact, starting September 2020, Dune Jewelry is debuting their first ever brand refresh, including a new color palette and logo design. They will also be adding “& Co.” to their name to encompass all the new experiential products they’re introducing in 2021. Your favorite experiential jewelry brand also prides itself on giving back. That’s right, Dune Jewelry donates a portion of all profits to various coastal preservation programs around the world, including the Association to Preserve Cape Cod and Dune has donated over $110,000 to charity over the past few years. “People often ask me where I see myself in 10 years and the ultimate goal is the same as it was in the very beginning. I want to continue creating art and capturing memories and experiences for our customer in a tangible way. I’d also love to forge new relationships and collaborations with likeminded, adventurous men and women so Andy Cohen, give me a call… we’re expanding on our men’s line!” dunejewelry.com Instagram | @dunejewelry, @sandy__hands Facebook | /dunejewelry Twitter | @Dunejewelry

NORIE SHOE CO. Platform Heels for Power Women By Lauren Bens

he might have traded in her combat boots for chic sneakers, sandals, flats and heels, but when it comes to comfort, Natasha Norie Standard, who had a long and illustrious military career, doesn’t mess around. This luxury footwear brand prides itself on crafting shoes that are equally stylish and wearable, which is why they are becoming a fast favorite amongst working women and those who want to stay on their feet without killing their feet. Norie will take your shoe to the next level, will luxurious pieces that allow a woman to “stand on her power,” as Natasha likes to say. After all, the company motto is stand your power with Norie Shoes – Norie Shoes are wearable, walkable and breathable! Natasha, who is a woman warrior herself – she served in the United States Army, and most recently retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in charge of VIP missions, Special Operations and airfield logistics – names every collection after powerful women from around the world. Her latest collection is named after the women from Game of Thrones, and her most popular ankle bootie is named after Aria, which also happens to be her grandmother’s name. “The inspiration behind my brand is this celebration of powerful women around the world. My niche in the market is that we take a common sense approach to footwear design. Emphasizing comfort, not forgetting style. There are five elements that we focus on for comfort: Heel Height and Width – All our styles are no higher than 3.7 inches - it’s our philosophy you don’t need a higher heel to be and feel sexy. Shoe Weight and Width, because lighter shoes are easier to wear. Premium interior ingredients – 100% of our shoe structures and materials are made by the top Italian artisans. Insole Characteristics – Our insoles have long

lasting qualities for comfort. Premium Outsoles – outsoles are the shoes protection of the foot, and must be made with superior materials to protect the foot from the outside plus supports the foot from the inside.” While still in her 20s, Natasha lived in New York City, where she worked as a fashion assistant to an American Vogue Editor Laurie Schechter, in addition to other publications including The Rob Report and Elite Traveler. “I left NYC for personal reasons. “I attended Parson Paris Summer Course, and I have a Master’s of Fine Art from Savannah College of Art and Design. I also attended Arsutoria Shoe School in Milan, Italy for one year, where I learned footwear pattern making and design. After shoe school, I learned how shoes are made and how women’s footwear is marketed to the luxury market. I saw that there is a niche in luxury shoe market - all shoes that are considered comfortable are not attractive. I want to make shoes that are comfortable, yet something that women love to wear.” What can we expect from Norie this season? “The spring collection is sneaker heavy. I have strappy sandals, ballerina flats and one high heel. The colors are light with apple greens, rose tones, metallics and the classic black. The most unique feature of the collection is the Japanese inspired geometric bow, that is interesting, unique and distinctive. It’s available in styles, Joan and Zeno. Zeno is our best seller.”
When it comes to making shoes, Natasha designs for professional women, especially those who are required to wear professional footwear as a job requirement, as well as women who wear luxury footwear that is both unique and fashion forward. norie.com

CONCIERGE DOCTORS Where Hospitality Meets Health Care: The Premier Experience at The Health Center at Hudson Yards By Julie Sagoskin Photographed By Fumihiko Sugino

I
n the wake of the unprecedented global COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most pivotal lessons many of us have learned is just how pertinent it is to have a trusting and valued relationship with your primary care provider. As March began and the first COVID-19 patient was confirmed in New York City, many people were asking themselves, how do I find a good physician? Can they guide me on what to do? If I leave the city, are they still accessible? What happens if my loved ones or I get COVID-19? Tina Sindwani, MD and Louis DePalo, MD, FACCP are the Premier concierge physicians at The Health Center at Hudson Yards, a new venture by the Mount Sinai Health System, one of the largest health systems in New York City and a leader in the research and innovation to fight the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19.
While the world was grappling with the gravity of this unknown virus, Drs. Sindwani and DePalo, along with the entire Mount Sinai Health System, had already begun tracking the global virus and meeting regularly with colleagues to understand the characteristics of the virus and how to best care for and communicate with their patients as it could spread quickly. Together, Drs. Sindwani and DePalo have an impressive and diverse medical portfolio. Dr. Sindwani previously developed the concierge medical program at UCSF. Dr. DePalo is a pulmonologist and previous clinical director of the Mount Sinai - National Jewish Health Respiratory Institute. These powerhouse physicians have now joined forces to lead Mount Sinai’s Premier concierge health care experience in New York City, along with a team of specialists, to create a top-ofthe-line, personalized health care service that redefines the way members engage in their health.

BUDDY CUSTARD
A Frozen Delicious Treat That Will Enhance Your Dog’s Life By Lauren Bens
F
or a tasty treat that dogs will not only love but that will increase their longevity, Buddy Custard has to be seen – or rather tasted – to be believed! Founder Robert Schlien was inspired to improve the health and well-being of our canine companions after being diagnosed with cancer over a decade ago. Schlien credits his recovery to a progressive protocol which has been reengineered to revitalize the health and energy levels of dogs. While Buddy Custard does not claim to cure, treat or mitigate any disease it is based on proven protocol that enhances the life of dogs helps to prevent against diabetes, cancer and other serious chronic diseases that plague our pets. With original and peanut butter flavors, Buddy Custard is the “pet-ra-ceutical,” or nutraceutical, you need to know about to ensure your pet is on the right wellness regime. Buddy Custard is an offshoot of a product developed for humans and stands shoulders, or paws, above other pet foods on the market. According to Robert, the pet industry continues moving towards all-natural and alternative solutions for canine problems, and it doesn’t get any better than Buddy Custard. “The technology and methodology behind this frozen treat is not new, it’s based upon a 60-yearold proven formula called The Budwig Protocol” says Robert. “Buddy Custard is revolutionary because
54 | resident.com
it provides critical nutrition for both healthy and ill dogs and is especially beneficial for those dogs diagnosed with cancer. It is recommended for dogs of all ages and becomes even more crucial after the age of ten. That’s because it’s around this age when three out of four dogs become more prone to getting canine cancer. We developed this product because it’s effective and easy-to-use. You simply add the recommended amount to your pets’ food per day based on your dogs’ size.” With only four all-natural, human-grade ingredients, this pet-friendly product is safe enough for all sizes and breeds. They even ship each package directly to your door, so all you have to do is keep it in your freezer until you’re ready to feed it to Fido. Made with high quality and organic flaxseed oil, cottage cheese, the all-natural stevia herb and natural peanut butter powder in their flavored variety, you can rest assured that your pet will be reenergized without any repercussions. Whether you have a younger pup who is still teething or an older dog suffering from gum issues, the cheesecake flavor and custard-like texture of Buddy Custard makes it a fan favorite amongst all four-legged companions. Robert’s own beloved dog, a 12-year-old Havanese named Boo Boo, never had to undergo conventional treatment after being diagnosed with mammary cancer. “She stuck to a strict Buddy Custard diet and is now going on four years of being cancer free. She still plays and acts like a puppy!”
exclaims Robert. “Even other dogs who have undergone treatments have recovered faster when Buddy Custard has been added to their regimen.” After being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2005, Robert turned to a formula created by Dr. Johanna Budwig, a German quantum physicist who was the foremost cancer expert in the world back in the 1950s. Dr. Budwig became an expert on understanding the importance of fats in the human diet, and how the wrong fats can lead to chronic diseases, including arthritis, diabetes and cancer. She went on to develop a methodology to get polyunsaturated, or “good fats,” into the human diet. The importance of this is that she was able to figure out how the body could successfully absorb Omega-3 oils, also known to be anti inflammatories. Buddy Custard blends together high-quality flaxseed oil and cottage cheese following Dr. Budwig’s methods. This combination becomes a conduit to get flaxseed into the cells of the body which in turn helps to rebuild mutated cells. This unique method of delivering flaxseed, which is also a natural blood thinner, helps to prevent against diabetes and other “other serious chronic diseases that plague our pets. Upon trying the combination, himself, Robert was surprised by the great taste and even more satisfied with the results. Robert is now cancer free and has
continued to eat this ice-cream type treat twice a day. “I could feel the throbbing from my tumors dissipating and knew I was on the right course. I started teaching people about this protocol that had helped me and started to spread it to pets. Dog owners frequently comment that their pets are more energized, that their coats look healthier and that their odors have disappeared. We reengineered the same technology that Dr. Budwig developed to adapt to the taste buds of dogs. It’s our own proprietary formula that affects all cells in the body.” Since founding the budding Buddy Custard brand, the robust Robert has found himself on a spiritual journey. As an animal lover and activist, who had previously founded a non-profit animal rescue, Robert is excited to have found a way to give back by helping other people and their pets with his allnatural products. He is even continuing to develop new flavors and products – let’s just say that the future is feline! That’s because Buddy Custard will soon be introducing a salmon krill kind for cat companions, as well as Buddy Custard Probiotic, which will replace billions of bad bacteria with good bacteria due to the naturally occurring probiotic found in cottage cheese. Every time a dog has diarrhea; they lose these good bacteria during their movements. Other future flavors to look out for include vanilla and honey. They have also completed testing on a hemp oil infused Buddy Custard which can be given to dogs stricken with severe arthritis. With the unprecedented pandemic wreaking havoc on our immune systems, staying focused on the health and well-being of ourselves and our entire families, including the four-legged members, has become more pertinent than ever before. Each 20oz, easy-to-use container of Buddy Custard is recommended for young, healthy dogs, so that they can remain healthy for the rest of their ball catching, licking lives! With USDA and FDA approved facilities in Palm Beach County and Fort Lauderdale, you are guaranteed the highest-grade product. Since Robert wants you to experience how much greater your dog’s life can be with Buddy Custard, he is offering a Buddy Custard Canine Covid-19 Special with 40 percent off from now until the end of October. “You have to be proactive when it comes to your own health and wellness and that of your dog. We suggest not to wait until your dog gets ill, it’s all about prevention. Our Covid-19 rate makes it super affordable to give us a try – it’s much cheaper than vet bills! The one good thing that has come out of this pandemic is that many people have been adopting dogs, and we just want to help them stay healthy. Whether they eat it alone or mixed with other foods, this is the freshest and most flavorful dog food out there. Even our cottage cheese is all-natural low fat.” Be the hero your dog thinks you are and buy a container – or twenty - of Buddy Custard. buddycustard.com

VEGGIES MADE GREAT Get Hooked on Healthy By Julie Sagoskin
W
ith a variety of frozen, yet super-freshtasting items, Veggies Made Great is the healthy food brand you either have or will want to have in your freezer right now. After starting with a line of veggie-packed healthy kugels, as well as a line of veggie-packed indulgent kugels intended for a very select niche market, the brand realized their appetizing products were actually appealing to a much larger audience base. “Mainstream consumers started really enjoying the product as way to get veggies. The items were allergy friendly (gluten free, soy free, peanut and tree nut free), clean and simple and a great way for consumers,
56 | resident.com
who didn’t have fresh veggies on hand or didn’t know how to prepare veggies, to get their intake of daily vegetables. Realizing there was really something to that, Veggies Made Great was started: a brand whose mission is to inspire people to love eating veggies by creating the highest quality, remarkably delicious and nutritionally smart, veggie-rich foods that are ready to eat and available everywhere. There weren’t a bunch of veggie-based frozen foods on the market. There were so many trends in the marketplace, but only one health message that every consumer knew to be true: eat your vegetables. Vegetables are their number one ingredient.” Since launching in 2008 with an initiative based on
the popularity of frozen yet healthy oriented products, their muffins, veggie cakes and frittatas have become a household favorite. You might say this brand has become a best seller because while they are always made with a mix of veggies, you only taste tastiness! After all, according to Christine Luongo, brand manager for Veggies Made Great, “It’s not a trend, it’s a lifestyle. Making veggie-rich foods more accessible and delicious is what the success of the brand has always been about.” Their three main and super mouthwatering product lines include sweet muffins, veggie cakes and frittatas. Each package, which come in a variety
of pack sizes, contains two oz individually wrapped sweet muffins, in flavors ranging from Banana Chocolate Chip to Blueberry Oat to Apple Cinnamon to Double Chocolate. No matter which flavor you choose, one thing’s for sure: veggies are still the first ingredient. From zucchinis, which keep the muffins stay moist, to fresh carrots, you won’t believe your eyes, or more importantly, your taste buds. According to Christine, “Our Double Chocolate muffin tastes like a brownie. Formulated for everyone, it makes getting even the pickiest eaters to try them easy. Nearly 30% vegetable, gluten free and only 120 calories, they’re completely guilt free. Health conscious moms can feed them to their kids for breakfast, dessert or as a snack on-the-go and feel good about what they are feeding their family.” If you want to savor their number one selling item, dig into their Super Food Veggie Cake from their veggie cake line. But beware: you’re going to get hooked on this healthy item. Made with seven different veggies, plus brown rice and eggs – no nuts or gluten and only 90 calories – this super food veggie cake, which is frozen and individually wrapped and tastes like a quiche, is food fit for Superman or Superwoman. The brand recently launched two new varieties within the last year, including Broccoli Cheddar and Butternut Squash. Their latest launch is a line of flavorful frittatas, which came out in August of 2018. “Our Spinach Egg White Frittatas have been flying off the shelves. With five grams of protein, and made with a delicious blend of, spinach, red pepper, tomato and egg whites, they keep you full and are low in calories. We also have a Veggie Bacon & Potato Frittata. It’s our first time dabbling in the meat alternative space. Being that our plant is soy free, and sticking with our mission of creating nutritionally smart products, we knew we had to find a meat alternative that stayed within these guardrails. The Veggie Bacon in our Veggie Bacon & Potato Frittata is made out of smoked pinto beans and tastes like bacon bits; you won’t know the difference. Made with cauliflower as the first ingredient, this product also has 5 grams of protein, keeping you fuller for longer. After the success of these two flavors, we most recently launched Mushroom & 3 Cheese Egg White Frittata, loved by everyone, even those who aren’t mushroom fans! This number one selling healthy food company has indeed made it their mission to make veggierich, nutritionally smart prepared foods available to everyone. Veggies Made Great are remarkably delicious, prepared foods, not just veggies in a bag. “Our Muffins, Veggie Cakes and Frittatas are made
with only clean, simple ingredients. It’s a worn-out phrase, but you can pronounce everything in our ingredient statement. While there are a lot of other natural and organic or gluten-free food brands out there, no one else is claiming to have veggies as their first and primary ingredient in every product. In fact, we are so proud of the ingredients that make up our products, including the amount of veggies in them, that we include a picture of the amount of veggies in each item on retail boxes. We are proud to say veggies are our # 1 ingredient, and I think we have the consumer loyalty we do because of it. With such tremendous brand loyalty, Veggies Made Great decided to launch an ambassador community just within the last six months due to the overwhelming loyalty of their customers. After all, with so many fans falling in love with their full line of flavors and sharing their feelings through social media, word was spreading fast. Through this loyal consumer community, customers can take part in the missions as well as offers and surveys in order to get access to free samples, health expert information and to share stories with like-minded consumers. This beloved brand, which also partners with health experts on a monthly basis, features easy-to-store items that are perfect for enjoying any time – even in quarantine times. With real veggies in every bite, this enticingly healthy brand has grown exponentially over the last five years. “We have really seen some nice growth in the last 5 years or so. We have been able to introduce new flavors in an already established product line (muffins), as well as launching brand new product lines (frittatas) all within the last 12 months. We have also had a lot of growth expanding to other retailers and distribution centers. Our brand sees best-in category dollar velocity. But we still have a ways to go; our core items (muffins, veggie cakes and frittatas), which have dollar velocity in the top 20% nationally, are in less than 40% ACV.” You can also find this scrumptious snack at D’Agostino, Costco, Fairway, Morton Williams and all the health markets such as Health Nut in Manhattan, plus Target, Kroeger, Publix and ShopRite. After all, it’s never too late to start on your resolution to eat healthier, and you won’t even know it since each Veggies Made Great variety is so delicious! PAULO WEI
Delivered: Asian Farm-To-Table By Hailey O’Connor OUR KITCHEN Paulo Wei, the creator and owner of the East Village Asian eatery Our Kitchen, is debuting a new farm-to-table delivery service from his Upstate New York farm that will transport you to the other side of the planet. Jumping on an international flight or skipping down to Hong Kong for a taste of the world’s best Asian food may not be too easy — but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have an intimate and eye-opening experience with food culture during the coronavirus pandemic. Our Kitchen, “It’s like an Asian Blue Hill Farm,” says Wei, a 25-yearold Columbia University sophomore, hailing from São Paulo and raised between Hong Kong and Beijing. “We have our 14th Street restaurant and now we have a working farm Upstate, which is all about the process of planting the seed, growing the food, and delivering it to the table. That is how you make really authentic Chinese food.” DUMPLINGS, BUNS, & TOFU Wei’s 43-acre farm situated alongside the Neversink River outside Port Jervis will supply Our Kitchen with just-picked seasonal Asian ingredients, for both fresh and frozen prepared foods. Better still, the farm will ship flash-frozen delicacies to the city — or even deliver them to the Hamptons. Think of items like beef and farm-grown carrot dump- lings, organic vegetable buns, and home-made tofu transported to your doorstep. Wei has also opened an on-site farm stand where Our Kitchen Farm devotees can shop for fresh ingredients. Guests can take free private tours of the farm’s extensive gardens or, by appointment, order a catered farm-to-table lunch. “Our Kitchen Farm is all about chillax vibes for city people,” says Wei, whose fully staffed farm will eventually see its 80 horse stables transformed into a boutique hotel with Japanese-style tatami floors. THE CHINESE TOON TREE On a tour of the gardens, guests can experience firsthand how farmers cultivate products using traditional and con-temporary techniques. For instance, calming music is piped throughout the farm to aid the growing process. Crops include everything from eggplants, chives, scallions, and radishes to more exotic ingredients like the onion-flavored young leaves of the Chinese Toon tree. The real foodie focus at Our Kitchen is dumplings, both meat and vegetarian. “The idea started with my grandmother,” says Wei. “We had always said, ‘One day let’s open a restaurant that serves the food we eat, homemade Chinese food.’ Dumplings are a symbol of family in China.” ECO-RETREAT Wei didn’t create his dream eco-retreat overnight. After his mother purchased the farm, he recognized its potential to become something special. It boasted two large houses, and an Olympic-sized horse arena. It had good soil and water views. Piece by piece, Wei began building a one-of-kind farm and eco-destination. He may have had some restaurant experience, but he also had help. He tapped the expertise of his friends — some of the best Asian restaurateurs and chefs in NYC. “Now we have a serious food brand, great service, and incredible products.” However, Wei says the core of his mission is to educate. “Americans are only exposed to commercial Chinese food,” says Wei. “But real Chinese food culture is aligned with the movement of the universe, the flow of energy, the rotation of the earth, and seasonal changes.”

MARIBEL LIEBERMAN Celebrating Two Decades of Deliciousness By Julie Sagoskin Photographed By nEil tandy Hair And Makeup By John Edington for Angelo David Salon
I
t might have started as a pipe dream and a pop-up shop for Maribel Lieberman, but MarieBelle New York is now an international chocolate brand. From her flagship Soho location on Broome Street to her stores in Japan, Maribel has been satisfying her customers’ sweet tooth for 20 years – let’s just say that not even a lockdown can keep her down. While Maribel had initially planned on releasing a special commemorative chocolate collection in honor of her anniversary year, she instead found herself reinventing her brand in the wake of the worldwide pandemic. With so many people stuck at home, MarieBelle has been making an even bigger
name for itself on the internet. Between major online marketing campaigns and plans to reopen the Soho space in September, this pioneer of the luxury chocolate frontier is bracing for a big comeback which you can both see and taste. Expanding their online presence has also allowed them to reach an even wider and more diverse audience who are looking for something delicious in these downtrodden times. Whether it’s gifting some of their famed ganache – many of their European clients have been sending goodies and birthday packages to their children and friends abroad in New York– or buying for yourself, a distinctive blue MarieBelle box is always sure to
brighten the mood. In honor of her decades long love affair with New York City, Maribel introduced a special New York Collection, a tasty and timeless tribute to some of Manhattan’s most iconic sites. This collection comprised of her signature ganache has quickly become a bestseller. Her brand might be known worldwide but Maribel has deep roots in her New York neighborhood, which is why she has made it her mission to give back. Most recently, Maribel has been helping to raise the morale of local healthcare workers by sending them her prized chocolatey pieces. With every purchase of their latest collaboration with Citymeals on Wheels, MarieBelle is donating 15 percent of sales to the organization which helps to feed the elderly.

In addition to reopening their flagship store in the fall, Maribel and her team are also busy preparing some palatable treats for the upcoming holiday season. After all, what could be better than receiving some of Maribel’s signature sweets? The holidays are always Maribel’s favorite time of the year for creating intricate handcrafted chocolates. Her Nutcracker and other themed boxes are also a continuous holiday hit. From pick-me-ups to grand gift sets and birthday treats, MarieBelle will make your day a bit more delicious. With her own factory and brand partnerships with big companies, Maribel has indeed made her mark on the chocolate market. From the moment you enter MarieBelle, Soho’s most mouthwatering spot, you are transported to the tasty world of world-class chocolates, but Maribel herself cannot believe her unique flavors have taken her this far! After five years of cooking with her popular catering company, Maribel opened up her first store in Nolita called Lunettes et Chocolat. The store, which she opened with a friend, featured designer chocolates and glasses. She then wound up opening a pop-up shop in Soho just after September 11th 2001 – this spot,
72 | resident.com
which was only supposed to be open for a few months during the holiday season, has now been there for almost two delicious decades. Maribel, the empress of her own edible empire, is also passionate about women’s empowerment issues. Since 2015, Maribel has been traveling to Honduras to educate women farmers. She has done so much to help promote products from her homeland, that Maribel was recognized by the government for her contributions and is now a brand ambassador representing Honduras. She might have started out borrowing furniture for her Soho space, but after years of slowly acquiring new pieces, MarieBelle is now just as elegant as Maribel, the queen of cacao! “The store has really evolved,” explained Maribel. “The way it looks now was always my original vision.” The enchanting store also features a café, a former art gallery, where you can indulge in Maribel’s famous hot chocolate, as well as soups, sandwiches, brunch and of course, tea time. The café, which is now a popular place for bridal and baby showers, used to be small space with just a few tables where Maribel would give out
samples of her hot chocolate. “When I created my hot chocolate, it was expensive, so for people to realize that this was not just a regular hot cocoa, I needed to give them samples. I made a section with chocolate and hot chocolate along with a few tables and had them sit here. They knew they’d buy, so it was called paid sampling. I became really known for my hot chocolate and started getting lines to sit, so I decided to extend it. The café adds a lifestyle to the brand. A lot of other stores have recently started adding cafés.” Maribel has five locations in Japan – all of which are currently reopened- including both MarieBelle and the more casual Cacao Markets, which offer a children’s style approach to chocolate with dispensers, as well as a new store on 38th and Park Avenue. Maribel is super hands-on when it comes to making her homemade chocolates and running the business, and the Broome Street store is definitely this boss babe’s baby. “I live close by so I go to the factory in Greenpoint, Brooklyn every morning and in the afternoon I come to the store.”

Her brand, which keeps getting better with every bite, is also internationally known due to being sold in famed department stores such as Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue, some of her original accounts. Maribel, a master chocolatier and mother, makes personalized chocolates for high-end brands including American Airlines and Tiffany’s and Citibank. From her original pin-up girl chocolate bar collections to her signature chocolate filled boxes – a favorite during the holidays – and even pink boxes with garters around them, MarieBelle does things deliciously differently! Maribel also enjoys creating new, seasonal flavors. While the holidays are her biggest inspiration when it comes to creating new things, you can also expect some unique flavors this fall. “We have rose petals and more things with lavender and mint. Our new bars feature a combination of different chocolates like strawberry with white chocolate and hibiscus. I try to bring some new things in for the season, especially in the summertime when people like fresh flavors after coming out of the winter.” Maribel has definitely achieved sweet success, something which she credits to the attention she pays to detail. “I always wanted to open a store but not necessarily one that just sold chocolates. I started with chocolate because it was less expensive – I was originally planning on adding other items but when I made the chocolates and paid all this attention to detail, it really caught on and people really loved it. I can’t believe time has gone by so fast. I still remember my first employees. I always say if you’re going to do something, do it today, don’t push it off. It’s good to say that 20 years ago I did this, otherwise I would have been saying I should have done it and would have probably been unhappy. I can’t believe it but when I go to Japan there are lines of people waiting for me to sign their blue boxes. I ask if they want it dedicated to someone and they say no, I just want your signature! I never dreamed it would come to this, it’s amazing. I thought that when I opened Nolita it would be a little store, and now I’m selling to the world. I remember that when I first did my chocolates, I wanted to do a design, so I put my husband’s artwork on them. I just did two
74 | resident.com
sizes because it was expensive, but since the beginning I had my blue and brown box. I think that this attention to detail, especially in the beginning, is really crucial to starting a brand. You can do your own personalized thing and be different than any other brand. I used to call it MarieBelle Fine Treats and Chocolate, and then the following year I said treats sounds like for a dog, so I changed it to MarieBelle New York. Some people were concerned that nobody would realize that it’s chocolate, but I knew that it would become known that MarieBelle is a chocolate company. I also thought this was easier to remember.” Maribel, who incorporates her artist husband’s abstract paintings on her chocolates – she will soon be showcasing his latest works in a new collection – hopes her daughter follows in her flavorful footsteps! “My daughter is in boarding school in Massachusetts. She’s learning time management and being disciplined for college is very important. In the past she wasn’t interested in the business, but now she says that maybe she’ll take over – I would love that! She’s also doing a summer program at Brown. It’s going to be an introduction to entrepreneurial endeavors. I don’t want to push her because everybody is entitled to do whatever they want and what makes you successful is how happy you are at the end of the day.” Maribel, who is definitely living her best – and sweetest – life, is always mixing things up, and you are sure to enjoy every morsel! “I’m always changing things but the artwork that goes on the chocolate is complicated to make. We make all the silk screening in France and Belgium, so to do a collection every year is expensive, but we do our holiday designs and then bring one to two new designs every year depending on the theme, such as if I want more of a Christmas in New York theme. My favorite thing is creating new gifts, new boxes, new flavors. I wish I could do that but now I have to run the company! We’ll also be introducing a new line of pralines – pistachio, hazelnut, dark milk cardamom and cinnamon.”

dining
76 | resident.com
The always moving Maribel is still inspired to keep going, and she does it all with five cups of tea and a lot of chocolate each and every day! “I’m thinking of going into franchising, the same way I did in Japan. You have to take care of a retail store like a baby. If you’re not there, everything will fall apart. I want to get licensing to open in other states and have someone else do it under my direction.” “I have a new movie called “Chocolate Road” launching this year. It’s a documentary and I’m so impressed with the quality of it. The film features three chefs and really shows what it takes to get the product to you. One of the chocolatiers from Denmark goes to Nicaragua and deals with farmers there and
another one in Japan deals in Peru. They talk to the local people about what they do with the cacao and it’s just amazing. Right now they’re sending it to film festivals to be featured next year. They’re also trying to sell it to Netflix or Amazon. If it came out in October or November, before the holiday season, that would be the best. This is really showcasing women empowerment by going out to the countryside and seeing the reality of what everyone goes through for you to have a piece of chocolate in your mouth.” Soho has truly become home sweet home for Maribel. “Soho is my neighborhood. When I met my husband he was already living here and I wasn’t familiar with it, but I have now been here for 30 years.
I loved the area when I moved. There were tons of art galleries, it wasn’t as fashionable as it is today. It doesn’t feel like you’re living in a big city, but rather a small village. I know the dry cleaning, the garage people, so I don’t think I would move, I’m so used to it. My family is still in Honduras so I do go visit them and they come visit me.” As she reflects on 20 years since launching her brand, Maribel realizes that she is leaving an indelible – and very edible – legacy. These might be trying times but she is already coming back better with each and every bite. mariebelle.com

resort lifestyle for everyone, from retirees to young families to second-home owners, with golfing, boating, and outdoor activities at your doorstep. And it’s becoming discovered by folks fleeing tax heavy states. Florida has no state income tax, and
on average only a 7% sales tax. People are discovering they don’t have to commute an hour to work anymore. All it takes is a cell phone, a fast, secure internet connection, and their office can be almost anywhere.

If the idea of living in the sunshine is appealing to you, then you should consider Ponte Vedra Beach and the Jacksonville Beaches. Finding your dream home is easy if you enlist the aid of Kim MartinFisher and Jennifer Martin Faulkner. They are the number one rated Realtors in Northeast Florida. “This is a primary residence area,” said Jennifer of the beaches communities along the Northeast Florida Coast. “If you had asked me that ten years ago, I would have had a different answer for you. We have many residents who enjoy the 24/7 vacationing lifestyle, most of those came to stay the weekend and decided this is home. Besides the beach resorts, most of which are private clubs, it’s about boating, golfing, tennis, and lifestyle.” According to Kim, “Many visitors wind up getting a little sand in their shoes, and never go home.” According to state statistics, more families are moving to the area than ever before. Many, if not most of them are from the tri-state area (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut), as well as Chicago and California. “The inventory of luxury properties in and around Ponte Vedra is dwindling every day,” says Kim Martin-Fisher. “It’s no wonder. The word is out. Our economy is strong; the public school system is the best in the state. Our luxury properties are more than reasonable when compared to prices in the Northeast and Midwest.” The average luxury home price begins at a million. It goes up from there. Jennifer points out, “We are an affluent community. A lot of New Yorkers discovered us years ago. In fact, prior to the Corona Virus, many of those who have an office in the City hopped on an airplane and came home to sunshine and blue skies every weekend.” Kim points out that Ponte Vedra is paradise nearly 365 days a year. We do have a few cold days that drop down to the fifties, but that gives us enough of the taste of winter to be grateful we live in Florida. It’s easy to get to work, “The daily commute to the office could be just as simple as walking across the house to your home office,” according to Kim, “Snowstorms are something we watch on television. Our closets are heavy on flip flops, shorts, and bathing suits. We are becoming a metropolitan area with a home town feel.”

MORE ABOUT THE AREA The Ponte Vedra area is a destination for golf enthusiasts. That should come as no surprise. The PGA’s world headquarters is located in Ponte Vedra Beach, and we count several top ranked professional golfers as our neighbors. For those of us who are not quite up to the championship level, there are dozens of top-rated courses, including the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, and Sawgrass Country Club. Tennis is taken seriously here as well. The Association of Tennis Professionals calls Ponte Vedra home. Its U.S. headquarters are here. The ATP is an integral part of the community. “We have dozens of tennis courts available throughout the area,” and there is a healthy rivalry between clubs in nearby Jacksonville, the Beaches and Ponte Vedra,” says Kim. Jennifer is quick to point out the Jacksonville Jaguars
are just 20 minutes away, and you can get to the stadium by car or boat. “As you might expect, boating is a big part of the lifestyle. We have the Intracoastal Waterway that runs from Key West to Maine, the ocean, as well as the St. Johns River. If a nautical lifestyle is what you want… it’s here.” Jacksonville, it’s beaches, and Ponte Vedra is where history began in America. Ponce De Leon landed near St. Augustine, which is just a few miles down the road. St. Augustine, in addition to being a top tourist destination, features trendy upscale dining, boutique shopping and is also home to a number of best selling authors. Health care is a significant attraction. The Mayo Clinic has one of it’s three medical campuses in Jacksonville. People travel from throughout the world to be seen and treated by Mayo’s top physicians.
Kim and Jennifer have built an enviable reputation. Kim and Jennifer are recognized for their knowledge and “get it done” attitude. Most of all they are respected for their negotiating skills. Jennifer is a relocation specialist, which is a real advantage if you are moving to the area from a different part of the country. Kim’s reputation as a top Realtor is well deserved. She has the vision, the experience, and the enthusiasm to help you open your new world to a Ponte Vedra Beach lifestyle. She has a love and a healthy respect for the Northeast. “My husband and I love New York City, before Covid we used to travel there several times a year to network. We look forward to returning soon. After all, a little cold weather is exhilarating, but in the end, we can’t wait to come home to paradise”, says Kim. Athina Vandame and Bilal Khalid recently introduced Limelight, the first location-based music discovery platform! “The simplest way to explain it is—it’s basically Tinder for music,” explained Vandame. “You can like or dislike tracks that come up on your feed from artists around you. When a listener engages positively to a track, we increase its outreach and more people will be exposed to it locally.” The app was built to be ergonomic; listener outreach is readjusted in real-time. “We allow artists to expand their reach,” added Khalid. “They start within their own city, and we rely on user engagement. It’s like
106 | resident.com
an infrastructure for talent-based growth. You post your music and it works for you. It goes beyond just posting on your social media or any swiping features out there.” Limelight functions like a democracy; the listener is in the driver’s seat. This allows for organic growth as opposed to exposure gained via marketing and promotion. It gives users an initial number of how many people they expose their track to and then calculates an outreach radius based on the concentration of the population. Whether you’re in a small town or major city, you have an equal opportunity to ensure your music is heard equitably. But how did Limelight come to life? Let’s just say it took a lot of sleepless nights, and maybe even a little –or a lot– of much needed insanity:
“I became obsessed with this idea and making it real,” explained Bilal. “I knew something like this would blow up because you’re creating competitive zones everywhere in the world. The first person who becomes a Limelight user somewhere, starts their own ecosystem, and then new artists can compete to become the best artist in that area and go from there. I had never attempted a whole music platform, not even when I first started it. I spent all summer, every single weekend, just sitting down and programming. I was even working on my birthday, because to me it just didn’t even feel like work.” Shortly after its launch, over 20,000 users had signed up for the app. Limelight had quickly jumped to number nine in the App Store charts. Through passion and ingenuity, Khalid was able to lay a
foundation for Limelight, and in turn the perfect base for himself and Vandame to build off of. “Within two months I had a recurring revenue of over $2,000 a month,” said Bilal. “It was crazy because the platform was incomplete and that started stressing me out. I started asking myself, how do I manage all of these people? I wanted someone who was just as passionate about it as I was, and as soon as Athina sent me a message, I knew that she was the right person. She told me my website was pretty terrible, and I love that kind of stuff.” “There were a lot of bugs,” explained Athina, who had gone to school for programming. “But people just wanted it so badly that they were still willing to sign up and pay for it. That was just confirmation that a platform like that was in high demand. I wanted to help turn it into a real marketable product.” After meeting up in New York, they decided that they needed to restart the app from scratch. It wasn’t long before they started redesigning everything: from the branding and the logo, to making the whole user experience as appealing as possible for both artists and listeners.
orming a sense of community is what really comes first for these two entrepreneurs who are both passionate about music. After all, Athina and Bilal want to help those around them get ahead based on their talent. “To me, this is a solution for a huge problem in the music industry that hasn’t been solved yet,” explained Bilal. Aside from helping artists, Limelight is just as exciting for listeners. “I love discovering new music all the time,” said Athina. “And I especially like supporting underground artists. This new platform is the easiest way to find emerging talent. On Apple Music or Spotify, I’ll only find music that’s already mainstream and I’m not interested in that.” Having just launched in March, the impact of Limelight is already being felt. “Even during beta I knew this platform was going to work,” explained Bilal. “There was this artist named Ozy who went to my high school who had never gotten more than 400 streams on a track. He uploaded his music on Limelight and the next thing you know, he starts topping the charts. He ended the year with 100,000 streams on his most streamed
track on Spotify. Artists can link this to other platforms as well so that they can make money. We don’t pay artists —yet—but we plan to eventually. Right now, it’s for exposure. We want this to be an essential tool for artists.” “Coming from Toronto, there are so many talented artists who don’t get the exposure they deserve. This gives us a chance to make a real impact,” explained Athina. In addition to having a profile to add to the social feel of the app, A&R Value was recently introduced in order to add a gaming component for listeners. This new feature allows listeners to get a score based on how accurately they’ve predicted a track’s success over time and compete with each other to see who has a better eye –or ear– for the next big talent. An Android version of the app is in the works and is expected to be released soon. Download Limelight in the App Store now and help restore the underground. bit.ly/LimelightMusic

MYCUBE
Pairing Technology with Design to Provide Ease of Mind and Safekeeping By Lauren Bens
T
he world and everyday life has rapidly changed over the past few weeks. Looking ahead, we don’t know when we will return to what we used to refer to as “normal.” In light of such uncertain times though, MyCube safes provide a sense of relief. We spoke with MyCube founders Lois Krasilovsky and her son, Scott Annan, to learn more about the company and what it offers in terms of protection and safekeeping of our most valuable items. MyCube is the first safe company to combine technology with style – what was the process in the innovation behind combining the two? SA: At MyCube, our goal is to make products with high quality security that make people feel safe – and there’s no reason a safe can’t look great too! Our process in developing our products is to have compassion for the customer and ask the right questions. How can we make it simple and intuitive, make the entire customer experience as seamless as possible, and at the same time make a safe that looks good? The easier and more personalized you
108 | resident.com
can make a product, the more reason you give a customer to use it. And with a safe, the more you use it, the greater ability you have to protect your vital belongings. What makes MyCube unique from other safes and safekeeping devices on the market? LK: MyCube’s chic design, hi-gloss colors, and interior features, such as an internal light and soft suede pad, are unique features of the safes. We have 3 different models, MyCube Classic, MyCube Mini, and MyCube fire safe, which is rated at 1200 degrees for 1 hour. We offer a variety of accessories as well, including four different style trays for storing jewelry, cash, watches, and other personal items. The safe is also very easy to use as it is a 4-digit LED digital keypad with one-button push locking. We also have a lifetime guarantee and free installation in NYC. What types of items of value do you recommend MyCube for safekeeping? LK: Anything of value, such as cash, passports, jewelry, watches, prescription medications, and any important documents.
While many things in our home have set places to keep them (i.e. clothes, food etc.), why don’t people think of having a set and secure place for items of value? SA: The safe industry is antiquated and not forward thinking. There is a lack of public awareness. From our experience, people start thinking about purchasing a safe after they have been burglarized or cannot find jewelry and other valuables that they have hidden. We work diligently to educate and support our customers about the importance of knowing where and how to store and secure their vital belongings. Once they understand the value that they actually have in their possession, how disorganized their personal items often are, and learn more about our products, they do not hesitate to purchase one. You are a mother and son team – how is working together in a family business? LK: We love working together! We have different skill sets which complement one another, but we share and uphold our family values of honesty, integrity, and kindness. We deliver a consistent message and always put our customers first. With
all that it takes to start a business, who better to trust than one another! Your family has been making safes and working to protect for over 100 years. What role did the family business play in the decision to create MyCube? LK: My father’s (Scott’s grandfather) cousins started a safe business in NYC in 1904. My father bought that business in 1957. I grew up working in his business during school holidays and summers; Scott worked with my brother in the business for several years. As a result of personal experiences, we saw a need for a small home safe, which is where our inspiration came from to create a contemporary design for something often viewed as utilitarian. How do you ensure your customers feel safe and that they have peace of mind in times of need with MyCube? SA: Our product is high-quality and works. It’s extremely secure and keeps your valuables in your possession. LK: We have 24/7 customer support where customers speak with a MyCube team member directly, and not a call center. All calls are answered immediately or returned within the hour. We work to answer questions efficiently and go above and beyond to answer to their needs. Given how our lives have changed drastically in the time we spend at home due to COVID-19, why do you think MyCube and safekeeping are more important than ever for families and individuals? SA: Anytime we go through a dramatic health or economic event, our alert level around staying safe and security goes up. We are in one of those times now. People are looking to secure cash, jewelry, and other valuables in a place they know is safe and where they can get immediate access. It’s critical that we give ourselves as much certainty as possible, and one of the ways to do that is to have a personal safe place that only you can access. LK: MyCube is also all about organization, and the more we have on our minds, the more important it is to keep the most important items in our lives organized so we know where they are and how to access them. Please share any upcoming news and/or new innovations planned for MyCube in 2020 with our readers. SA: At MyCube, we are all about innovation. We will be launching a new brand identity this summer, which will continue to position MyCube at the forefront of design within our industry. mycubesafe.com

ALEKSANDRA KARDWELL Helping You Find the Right Help By Lauren Bens How do you perfectly match professional domestic help with the right client/family? The key to creating great domestic matches that last is to truly listen to the individual needs and preferences of the household employers and candidates who work with us. At Hamptons Employment Agency, Inc., the award-winning domestic staffing firm that I founded in 2011, we’ve always been concerned with creating excellent matches that last. Our success has, to a large degree, come from striving to make sure that we place great employees with great employers.
domestic employers send their staff to our professional trainer, who has been a Professor of Culinary Arts for over 30 years. The training can also be done at an employer’s residence. The program covers topics such as serving-ware needed, place settings, pre-meail setup, order of service, and beverage service. Tell us about your book you published last year. In spring of 2019, I published my book, How to Find, Hire, and Keep The Right Domestic Professionals: The Household Employer’s Guide to Hiring Great Employees
What inspired you to start this business? Any additional background info would be great as well! Prior to founding Hamptons Employment Agency in 2011, I worked in household environments in various roles. As I gained more experience, I began to pair domestic professionals with employers. This ultimately blossomed into my business, which is now in its ninth year. My residential work experience has been a great advantage. The knowledge and skills I acquired have given me the perspective required to be able to make great matches that last. What are the most popular requests you receive? We receive requests for the full range of domestic positions. Right now, the jobs that we are seeing clients looking to fill most frequently include chef, couple, housekeeper, nanny, and tutor positions. In this time of COVID-19, many household employers are seeking staff members who will be live-in in order to limit everyone’s exposure to the Coronavirus. Household employers also are asking new employees to get tested for the Coronavirus, and some employers are doing random testing after employees start work. You have numerous offices around the country - how did you become so popular/what sets you apart? I think what really sets Hamptons Employment Agency apart from other firms is that we truly want to create great matches that last. We put clients and domestic professionals first, and strive to make sure that everyone is happy when we make a match. Fit is so very important in this field, and it’s critical for both clients and candidates to see their working relationship as a good one. Because of our strong reputation, we have managed to grow substantially by word of mouth. What are your clients looking for when they hire domestic help? While each client has their own unique needs and preferences, there are a number of things that virtually all discriminating household employers are looking for. First, clients like to see domestic professionals who have a track record of working in long-term residential positions. This fact in itself speaks a lot about a domestic professional’s ability to excel in a household. Personal characteristics are very important as well – trustworthiness, conscientiousness, flexibility, and a positive attitude are all key. Do you train those looking to be hired? We currently offer one training program, our intensive Formal Dinner Service Training Program, which typically runs four hours. With this program,

Who Will Stay for Years. I would describe the book as a comprehensive guide that principals and their representatives can use to make great domestic hires that last. The book covers a range of topics, including screening resumes and interviewing, making the job offers, onboarding new employees, and keeping great staff members. hamptonsemployment.com

RENAISSANCE PROPERTIES
Leading Charge to Meet New Emission Standards Years Ahead of Deadline By Peter Elston
N
ew York commercial landlords are seizing a unique opportunity to make a difference.
By 2024, most buildings larger than 25,000 square feet – some 50,000 buildings across the city -- will need to drastically cut emissions to comply with NYC’s building emissions law, Local Law 97 of 2019. By 2050, those caps on carbon emissions will force building owners to reduce emissions by 80. That’s a tall order, especially during a global pandemic that has been felt acutely by commercial building owners. But with most workers having yet to return to the office, some landlords are using this unprecedented moment to start working on their buildings, with the goal of meeting these stringent new standards years ahead of schedule. In Noho, Renaissance Properties is leading the charge. “The question is how do we get people to invest now, in the middle of a crisis, in sustainable practices,” said Bradley Fishel, Vice President of Renaissance Properties and Chairman of the Board Noho Business Improvement District. “The new climate act for New York City means that building owners are going to have to meet sustainability standards in the coming years anyway. So, we are pressuring
112 | resident.com
buildings owners in the Noho BID to meet those 2024 standards before any other neighborhood in Manhattan.” Renaissance Properties – whose portfolio includes 632 Broadway, 627 Broadway, and 264 West 40th Street – has already made the city’s recommended changes as of two years ago, Fishel said. Another of their buildings, 62 West 45th Street, is currently being transitioned to the Climate Act’s requirements. For instance, at 632 Broadway -- a landmarked Classical Revival mercantile building designed by Robert Maynicke and built in 1897 – the family company led by President Kenneth Fishel replaced all lights with LEDS, switched to solar energy utility credits, installed touchless faucets and touchless light switches, updated all HVAC units to VRF systems, replaced all windows and converted the buildings from heating oil to natural gas. They also added the Merv 13 air filtration to the building in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Building owners stand to save a ton of money by making these changes now,” said Fishel. “Not only because of vacancies and the fact that you are bothering less people when you make these retrofits, but because it is cheaper. We are seeing up to 30
percent discounts because of COVID. If you wait, those prices are going to go up.” While the Noho BID cannot force building owners to get onboard with their sustainability campaign, Bradley said that it can apply pressure, recommend solutions and educate. “Once you get someone’s attention and show them the information, the numbers speak for themselves,” he explained. “If you are a long-term owner like we are, these changes pay dividends. You are saving money and the earth. About Renaissance Properties: With an eye towards distressed assets, Renaissance specializes in value-add investments with a focus on Prewar Prime Properties. NICK MORAN
The Art World’s Abstract A-lister By Julie Sagoskin
H
e might be an abstract sculptor, but Nick Moran’s resolve to be an artist has always been very concrete. With his unique style and inspirations, this UK-born creative has been keeping busy and always finds the silver – or cobalt blue - lining, even in these unprecedented times.
114 | resident.com
Moran, an artistic mover and shaker, moved studios last year from London’s industrial heartland to a studio that he built at the back of his house in North London. “This has been the best thing for me as I can really spend more time with the work, so work and life have more time to converge,” explains Moran. “Lately, I have
been focused on making smaller, more intimate sculptures.” This superstar sculptor takes a piece of each place he visits with him, which is why traveling has always served as a major source of inspiration for his most precious and personal pieces:
“Travel remains a central element to my work, whether to motivate new work or for reflection. It will always play a big part in what I do. I spent some time in my dad’s hometown of Sligo, Ireland last year, where he grew up with eight siblings. I felt a strong pull to go there after he died. Breathing the same air and walking the streets of my Irish ancestors, as well as getting to spend time talking to locals who extended such a warm welcome that I felt I was being welcomed home just blew me away. I don’t tend to over analyze how life events end up in the work, but they are definitely there.”
Nick especially enjoys working with symmetry, weight and balance, which is why they have remained a strong theme in his one-of-a-kind works. What you might not expect from him is a striking new color choice. “I have had a longtime obsession with cadmium red, but I have just begun an obsession with cobalt blue! Let’s just say that there will be lots of blue sculptures on my website in the near future.” Although all of the shows he was scheduled to partake in earlier this year were canceled due to the unpredictable Covid-19 pandemic, Nick was able to make more sales directly through his
website as well as social media platforms, such as Instagram. “It’s been such a joy for me to have direct contact with the buyers. Often times they even send a picture of where the artwork has been placed, which I just find to be so lovely.” This hands-on artist, who enjoys making masterpieces for his international client base, continues to use his own experiences to create contemporary and awardwinning abstract sculptures. nickmoran.co.uk

LINJIE DENG
NYC’s Most Interesting Multi-Media Artist By Hailey O’Connor Chinese Ink & Multi-Media Artist Art’s influence on Linjie Deng began at a young age when his parents, who owned a fireworks store in China, would put him in an empty box as a method of keeping him safe. Linjie would involuntarily bother his parents during business hours — until they came up with an idea. They gave him a piece of paper and ink, telling him to “do whatever you want.” Linjie did not limit himself to this paper. “I would draw on the walls and on the bed. My mom got pissed off and sent me to calligraphy class” — a skill that Deng would later use to ease tension at home. This class inspired him to paint on a door broken during a family argument with the character of good luck and fortune: “Fu”. Through this, he realized the power of art. Soon after, he learned Chinese ink and paintings. At university in Beijing, he took on multimedia and design art, honing his craft within a more technological route. He states, “As I progressed, my medium changed. I began with paintbrushes, ink, and rice paper, then used computer software and incorporated western culture more later on.” He goes on to say, “I think art saved my life. If I didn’t have art, I wouldn’t know
116 | resident.com
how to express myself during that troubling time in my home.” UN Global Callout Linjie, like most New Yorkers, didn’t think coronavirus would wound the city as deeply as it did. “I thought I’d stay at home and see what would happen, but every day it got worse,” With all of his calligraphy paraphernalia in his studio, Linjie instead went to his computer and created three works inspired by his time in isolation. “As an artist, I thought ‘why not create a strong image with a strong message for the public; art is about bringing change, for myself and others.’” The posters, designed for the UN Global Callout to Creatives, feature vibrant colors and texts, such as a woman at home with her pets with the words “Stay Home, Save Lives” above her, and a medical worker with arms around the city, urging New Yorkers to stay strong. He recently finished a canvas painting entitled “Password”, where he continues to spread the life-saving message. His new work “Teeth Falling Out” explores his relationship to basic elements that he had taken for granted before COVID:
water, sun, leaves, soil, and air. The sales of his pandemic-influenced art will benefit New York Presbyterian Hospital’s frontline healthcare workers. Museum Chinese in America The critically acclaimed Chinese-American painter and master calligrapher’s work has been shown in both China and at the Museum of Chinese in America. Most recently, his work was presented right alongside classic masterpieces of Renoir, Monet, and Picasso at the Hampton’s Virtual Art Fair. His collection at the 3-D fair comprised of 25 works, including the aforementioned social justice-inspired pieces, calligraphy works, and abstract paintings. To close out 2020, the young art maestro seeks to complete a series of ten works that encompass everything he’s learned during his ten years of life in Beijing and the United States. “I want to illustrate what I’ve seen, what I’ve learned, and what’s changed,” he says, “I want to show people my journey.” linjiedeng.com

FRIEDA GOLDSTEIN Immigration in the Age of Corona By W.A. Muller
I
n the dark days following 9/11, there was speculation, especially at the Department of Justice, that immigration might be impacted as a result of the terrorist attacks on our country. However, folks seeking to immigrate for various reasons kept coming. The Department of Homeland Security was born in the aftermath of the attacks and legacy Immigration and Nationality Service (“INS”) was put to rest. The agency was split into several bureaus, separating immigration benefit services from enforcement and removal operations. The following months brought about changes in immigration laws, including a required registration period for nationals of certain Islamic and more recently “bans” on citizens of certain nations deemed to be a threat to national security, from entering the country. Similarly, the Covid-19 Pandemic has brought about recent changes in immigration laws and policies. On April 23, the President issued a proclamation specifically addressing those changes to clarify some of the confusion and misinformation that was previously disseminated. It pertains to anyone seeking to enter the country as an immigrant who does not have a valid immigrant visa or official travel document. Those exempted include; lawful permanent residents (green card holders), individuals seeking a special immigrant visa to perform medical research or work, such as healthcare workers or law enforcement personnel, individuals applying for a visa under the EB-5, or immigrant investor visa program, spouses or children of United States citizens, and individuals whose entry would be classified as “national interest” as determined by the Secretaries of State or DHS.
It is important to note that the President’s proclamation does not preclude individuals who are present in the country from applying for asylum, refugee status, lawful permanent residence, or naturalization. These petitions are still viable, however, although the applications are being processed, no interviews are being scheduled at this time. The travel restrictions imposed do not pertain to green card holders but currently do affect those who have been present in most countries in Europe, China, and Iran. Presently, all U.S. consulates abroad have canceled routine immigrant and nonimmigrant visa appointments. The consulates have declared they will resume routine visa services as soon as possible but are unable to provide a specific date at this time due to the uncertainty of the Pandemic. Some have provided target dates for when they hope to reopen but this is country specific and subject to change. Most consulate websites claim they are open for emergency appointments, but these seem to be reserved mostly for U.S. citizens dealing with lost or expired passports abroad. The Department of State has not yet defined what constitutes an emergency (assuming emergency appointments are available to non-U.S. citizens) most likely this would include the severe illness or death of a family member. The plight of foreign employees in specialty occupations, or H1-B employees, who have been laid off because of Covid-19 is another volatile area. Many in this situation are in a difficult predicament and might consider filing for a change of status to B1/B2, visitor’s visa. Another issue is whether non-U.S. citizens may
apply for unemployment benefits. Currently, the receipt of unemployment benefits is not considered by USCIS in a “public charge” determination. However, when seeking lawful permanent residence, being “unemployed” will still be considered under the totality of the circumstances analysis and may affect a public charge determination. Visitors in the country under the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) or Visa Waiver Program are given a finite number of days they may remain in the United States without having to obtain a visitor’s visas and this specific date is reflected in their I-94 form. Due to the Pandemic, people under these programs are able to contact the Customs and Border Patrol Office nearest them and request “Satisfactory Departure” which is basically permission to stay in the country for an additional 30 days beyond their I-94 date. Having worked in the field of immigration through four different White House administrations it is easy to see how immigration policies change, shifting from left to right, depending on the politics of the administration at the time. Currently, with Covid-19 in the mix, it remains to be seen how policies being imposed during the Pandemic will be implemented in 2021 and the years beyond. As for this great nation of immigrants, we remain a mecca, a beacon of shining hope for those seeking a better life and we hope it will always remain that way. GOALS PLASTIC SURGERY
The Leading Practice in Affordable Cosmetic Surgery and Impeccable Results By Tyrice jOHNSON OF THE BELVEDERE AGENCY
G
oals Plastic Surgery, a premiere clinic in body aesthetics, is offering competitive pricing not just to New Yorkers but to people worldwide to reclaim their confidence. The founder of Goals Plastic Surgery, Dr. Sergey Voskin, a renowned doctor with a keen eye for art, beauty and cosmetic medicine developed a practice with exceptional safety standards and extraordinary values. Since a young age, Dr. Voksin had an inclination towards patient care and cosmetic surgery. The culmination of Dr. Voskin’s love for aesthetics, medicine and helping people feel their best created a clinic -Golas Plastic surgery with skilled doctors who have an artistic eye,

medical knowledge, extensive training and impeccable bedside manners. “Initially, I saw a gap in the market in New York City for affordable body contouring procedures. There was lack of knowledge and competitive pricing, but the demand from patients was prevalent which led them to travel to countries like the Domenican Republic to explore procedures and undergo potentially dangerous surgeries,” says Dr. Voskin. This led Dr. Voskin to establish Goals Plastic Surgery, a practice with premier doctors who can deliver elective surgery services with utmost care, precision, affordability and incomparable results!
Goals is focused on making high quality cosmetic surgery procedures affordable and accessible to people in the United States. In addition to surgery, Goals also offers postoperative care in-house, as well as an extensive list of the newest technologies for aesthetic medicine. Goals views plastic and cosmetic surgery as a medium of artistic expression that displays itself in a practical application of scientific knowledge, the production of what is beautiful, a perfection of workmanship, a perpetual quest for improvement in technique, and a skill attained through clinical experience, and above all making people feel happy about what they see in the mirror.
“We mostly see women of different ages and ethnic groups- including mothers, social elites and celebrities. Not one procedure fits all. Our doctors curtail body contouring procedures according to the patient’s body structure, health, and of course, their own vision of beauty. Our doctors aim to create confident and better versions of our patients, without changing their identity and uniqueness,” says Dr. Voskin. The most sought after procedure at Goals is the Liposuction 360 and Brazillian Butt Lift. This procedure is performed by our accredited doctors who have a keen eye for beauty and surgical skills to use state of the art technology to deliver the most outstanding results with a speedy recovery. A Brazillian Butt lift is accomplished with liposuction of the back or abdomen, or both. The fatty tissue is then transferred to the buttock region and in most cases, the hips, to create a more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing silhouette. Goals Plastic Surgery facilities are luxurious
looking inside, with each corner tastefully designed, and each room technologically equipped to facilitate post operative care and beauty treatments. Goals Plastic Surgery boasts of clientele traveling not just from across the country, but from all over the worldincluding Europe and Africa. Social media plays a significant role in demand for body contouring procedures. With celebrities and influencers flaunting their physique, followers are often searching for ways to attain those results. “At Goals, we strongly advise against the use of silicone injections and overly aggressive liposuction. This is why we formed a practice with doctors who abide by safety standards and values. At our practice, we believe that plastic surgery performed in harmony with art and natural beauty gives the best results,” says Dr. Voskin. “Right now, amidst COVID-19, we are seeing a drastic increase in demand for cosmetic surgery. Many patients are working from home and using the opportunity to recover without
having to take much time off. Also, people are apprehensive to travel, and they are instead investing in making themselves look and feel their best,” says Dr. Voskin. Goals provides the largest selection of the most innovative aesthetic services at the most affordable prices to people around the United States. “We offer pricing that draws in people of all social classes and procedures that are curtailed to various body types,” says Dr. Voskin. The Company is on track to become a household name in the aesthetic industry, as they opened up an additional office in Atlanta this year.

GERALDO RIVERA Celebrating 50 Years on Television By Elizabeth Darwen
T
his past Labor Day, 2020 marked Geraldo Rivera’s 50th Anniversary in television. One of America’s most enduring public figures, the Emmy and Peabody-award winning correspondent shares stories of his wild life and high times in a hugely entertaining series available right now on Fox Nation, the Fox News Channels’ digital platform. Titled “I Am Geraldo, 50 years,” the series chronicled Geraldo’s amazing half-century in broadcasting, beginning with his epic expose on the conditions of the “Willowbrook State School.” In that riveting crusade to close down America’s grim institutions for the developmentally disabled, Geraldo made history. His work is literally still being taught in every school of social work in the nation, forever changing attitudes about the care and treatment of the mentally challenged. On a personal level, the impact of the series propelled the little-known New York reporter to international

stardom. The arc of his unique career and vivid personal life took Geraldo from gritty street reporter to jet set playboy to host of saucy late night and raucous daytime television programs. Probably the last of the Rock and Roll newsmen, Geraldo went everywhere from the killing fields of Iraq and Afghanistan, Central America, Africa and around the globe, including America’s inner cities. He’s interviewed everyone from Yasir Arafat to Fidel Castro, Muhammad Ali to Charles Manson to Donald Trump. Sometimes, the line between news and entertainment blurred in his unplanned, improvisational travel through the ever-changing pop culture landscape, 1970-2020. The Fox Nation series re-airs his infamous, ratings record busting “Al Capones Vault,” as well as his classic interviews with Mick Jagger, Barbra Streisand and Paul McCartney. It also airs Geraldo’s confrontation with violent skinheads, the best studio brawl ever caught on tape. The series culminates with Geraldo returning to reporting. After losing
friends and neighbors on 9/11 the series shows how Geraldo left a high profile, highly rated hosting gig at CNBC, taking a huge pay cut to become a War Correspondent for the Fox News Channel. Now FNC’s Correspondent-at-Large, Geraldo relives history as he shares a treasure trove of amazing footage like the Zapruder film of the assassination of the young and gracious 35th President JFK, and includes interviews with the totally unconventional 45th president, their decades long friendship, their rendezvous on Celebrity Apprentice, and the odds President Trump will be re-elected. In addition to the four hours on Fox Nation, on Labor Day, Geraldo’s actual 50th anniversary, the Fox News Channel aired a One-Hour Geraldo Special on their broadcast channel. MITCH SUSS
Getting to Know the Man Entrepreneur Who is Reshaping the Lives of Women By Lauren Bens
I
f you want to balance your metabolism, lose weight, and more importantly, readjust your mindset, Balance 3H Plus has just the individualized program to bring out the best version of yourself. Mitch Suss, founder and CEO of Balance 3H Plus Medical Weight Loss and Spa Center, Inc., has indeed helped many young, middle-age and older women take their hormonal destiny into their own hands with his company’s proprietary weight loss program Balance 3H Plus, which is predicated on their exclusive blood panel Health 365, designed just for women. By identifying the specific hormones contributing to weight gain, creating medically supervised customized weight loss programs, and reducing chronic inflammation, it becomes easier to manage the hormones that have a huge impact on belly fat and increase your risk for every chronic disease including diabetes, thyroid disease, heart disease, and certain cancers-just beware-you might also wind up with less stress and levels of feeling your sexiest and most confident self. You can also keep your body ready for battle with the B3H Plus IV Weight loss and immunity boosting drips to help ensure you stay strong and lean during these uncertain times.
126 | resident.com
Of the thousands of businesses that entrepreneurs launch every year, Balance 3H Plus stands out as the best for well, improving the quality of life and health of women. This revolutionary regimen transforms the lives of women from clinically depressed, sick and obese to happy, healthy and lean- if this sounds like changing (it is!) then that makes Mitch Suss deserving of the honor of entrepreneur of the year, hands down. If you are ready to get fit and healthy, you will want to hear all about the history of the brand and the man. Balance 3H Plus is reinventing the lives of women in their 20’s, 30’s, 40s, 50s, and beyond who are struggling with hormonal related weight gain and chronic health issues. Balance 3H Plus Medical Center & Spa incorporates technology, consulting, cutting edge-research, and innovative anti-aging and cosmetic solutions for the female demographics, creating a happy home, happy family, and happy self-existence that nurtures and promotes a happy life. Mitch has spend years fostering leading research collaborations with world-renowned medical institutions, scientists, and wellness thought leaders to introduce wellness standards, nutritionally based hormone balancing programs and solutions
into the current diet environment that is still rooted in the ‘calorie in, calorie out’, eat less, exercise more’ paradigm. For example; Nutrition researcher and New York Times bestselling author, Neal Barnard, M.D., demonstrates how food affects our hormones-and our health. Dr Bernard shares the science behind how common conditions-like infertility, weight gain, menopausal systems, breast cancer, thyroid problems and acneare fueled by hormones that are hidden in or influenced by the foods we eat. Imagine experiencing years of unexplained infertility until a simple diet change sets things right. Or suffering from unexplained weight gain or obesity, endometriosis, debilitating menstrual cramps, polycystic ovary syndrome, diabetes, or even acne without ever realizing that the solution could be as simple as the food on your plate. Incredibly, most women who will benefit from this very subtle switch of diet, do not even realize that a hormone imbalance maybe contributing to or even causing their health problem. At Balance 3H Plus, women in their 20’s, 30,s 40,s 50,s and beyond share stories of how they overcame their medical conditions by simply changing their diets.
“Its time to bring the science of weight loss out of the dark ages and apply a new understanding of how hormones impact weight loss and metabolism,” explains Mitch. “Everyone who is part of this movement believes fully in this healthy new paradigm shift. From physicians and nutritionists to medical professionals, from sustainability advocates to health and wellness thought leaders, it was evident to most how critical this concept is to the millions of women stuck in unsuccessful antiquated weight loss programs. We have been fortunate to attract many influential and powerful women who are very supportive of our efforts to improve both the mind and body using targeted nutritional principles backed by the most recent scientific research in the biology and physiology of women, as they recognize the great implication and importance of what we are accomplishing-which is to passively deliver a safe and effective medical solution to the millions of women suffering needlessly from hormonal imbalances.” Mitch, also explained that he is “proud of the global reach we have achieved in just a short few years”. We strive to form strong strategic relationships with leading medical institutions at the intersection and crossways of health, fitness and psychology. Success to me, and to the balance 3H Plus team, is largely focused on how many women we can have a positive impact on. Everyday I translate the fact that we are influencing health outcomes for thousands of women already, and are only growing. Through our hard work, dedication and zest, we have a unique opportunity to advance the health and well-being of women at scale.” About The Man After caring for his ill mother who was suffering from cancer, Mitch made it his life’s mission to find a better way for women to fulfill their health goals in a natural and holistic way. As his mother’s primary caretaker, Mitch watched her teeter back and forth between moments of pain, frustration, and sadness, as well as moments of optimism and spiritual strength. This time with his mother taught Mitch how delicate and fleeting life can be. It opened up his heart to explore, authentic connections with other women whom he would come to love and care for. It also gave him a deep and profound perspective that all women desire emotional understandings and open communications in relationships, but often struggle to find it. This experience gave Mitch an incredible resolve and profound understanding to go out into the business world and try to help as many people he can from the ravishes, pain and suffering illness brings to so many.
Balance 3H Plus has 3 Unique components that guarantee your success: 1. WE TEST, WE DONT GUESS - A women’s hormone levels. This is the most overlooked and unappreciated by the mainstream diet industry. Many women may experience symptoms which may be related to a variety of metabolic dysfunctions or an imbalance between certain hormones. Of course decreased energy and weight gain could also be related to a hunger or stress hormone imbalance, sluggish thyroid, poor lifestyle and diet, even food intolerances and sensitivities. Without valid testing, we can never know which are out of balance. We first decode these deficiencies and take appropriate measures to correct these imbalances. 2. A NUTRITION PLAN - designed specifically for the unique dietary needs of women experiencing the hormonal imbalances and debilitating symptoms that are wreaking havoc on their bodies. 3. BALANCE 3H PLUS ALL-natural supplement protocol to restore hormone balance, alleviate symptoms and help women lose fat and gain muscle. When we treat these imbalances and metabolic dysfunctions, our patients get back the energy and vitality they once had. And many lose up to 25 pounds during the initial 8-week program.
but Mitch has both the personality, resolve and perseverance to come out on top. Though he might be known as an energetic and resolute entrepreneur, as well as radio show creator, producer and authoryou’ll definitely want to read his book entitled “It’s not your fault, it’s your hormones,” -Mitch has navigated through both personal and professional hardships only to be considered by his peers to be one of the next rising stars in the health and wellness industry. The great news is there are a lot of things women can do to take back control of their emotional health and life. There are answers for every women at every stage. Women no longer have to feel victimized by haywire hormones and conventional diets that make you fat and do not work. And for many the answer lies in foods that are fortified with nutrients to keep you healthy and hormonally balanced! For a growing number of ladies, B3H Plus is the next, most logical step for them to take in order to help care for themselves, their health and their bodies. I know one thing for sure, Mitch Suss has my vote for entrepreneur of the year. balance3hplus.com
According to Mitch, honing in on specific hormones without the use of drugs, is essential for managing your health and lifestyle, as well as reducing stress and anxiety. “When you Balance a women’s naturally occurring hormones in a certain stage of life, they feel younger, energized, sexy, and more confident with their new body. Our two week metabolic cleanse, which should be done at least twice a year, revitalizes your energy levels, clears up your skin, and weans you off alcohol, tobacco and sugar, which is vital for long term weight success. We rid the body of toxins and the difference can really be seen and felt within a short time. One added (and very big) benefit, is that many spouses and significant others often call up the center and thank us for reigniting the passion, fervor and intimacy that disappeared In their relationships many years ago. This makes myself and staff members very proud!” These might be trying times,

DEVON LÉVESQUE Health Expert & Fitness Entrepreneur By Hailey O’Connor

ntrepreneur Devon Lévesque is one of the world’s foremost wellness and fitness experts, Partner of ultra-exclusive gym Performix House, and investor in other wellness brands such as Thr33 Active, Super Coffee, Powered App, and a new cutting-edge at-home gym: Arena. He works with influential figures such as Jets star Braxton Berrio, influencer @brothernature, and real estate mogul Barry Sternlicht. Arena: The At-Home Workout Solution Arena, by definition, means “a scene of activity”— and this dynamic 37-lb black platform offers the same multi-faceted workout you could have in any public gym. Arena is “a complete gym solution that’s the size of a suitcase,” explained Lévesque. Forget the cable machine, dumbbell rack or hex bar — Arena can become all of these with the touch of a phone. The Bluetooth platform’s resistance is determined by a sliding scale on the user’s smartphone app; instantaneously, resistance can go from 0–200lbs. While that alone would be impressive, Lévesque then elaborated on Arena’s versatility: “Anyone that’s just trying to better their lives through fitness and are on a budget, this is their solution.” While the small gadget can provide resistance more than 5x its own weight, its value is not restricted to strength training— putting on the ankle straps allows for the elasticity of a Pilates reformer, creating softer cord-tension supports physical therapy and sitting on the ground imitates an ergometer, as

And all things are made a bit more fun with competition — Arena is no different; the app’s programs and workouts are sent to a cloud, where friends and family can have activity level competitions. goarena.co A Fitness Lifestyle Lévesque is quite used to fitness being a family endeavor, as his father and grandfather were professional weight lifters, and his mother a professional arm wrestler. Lévesque himself became a dual-sport college athlete and eventually turned his passion for fitness into full-time job. He only partners with brands authentic to himself, testing all products for a 6-month minimum before agreeing to an investment or partnership. The companies Lévesque is involved in reflects his daily life: throwing on Gymshark clothes and drinking a Super Coffee to start the day, heading into Performix House for a guided cardio session on the Powered App, and following-up this cardio with some strength training on Arena. Post-workout, he applies THR33 Active Cream to soothe any soreness. All the while, Lévesque tracks his activity with his Whoop strap. Giving Back To raise mental health awareness and support the FitOps Foundation, Devon Lévesque will perform the first ever bear crawl marathon around NYC.
The FitOps Foundation is a nonprofit powered by Performix® that trains and certifies veterans as elite personal trainers. For this marathon, Lévesque has been training alongside a team of doctors and coaches at Performix House, and following a weekly 20-hour program that balances training and recovery. Expected to take 24 hours to complete, Lévesque will be attempting the impossible on October 30th at 5pm with a goal of raising $500,000 to donate to FitOps. Upcoming: Performix House LA When all gyms are finally open, we can expect another illustrious milestone from Lévesque and Performix House — Performix House LA. Twin to NYC’s most exclusive, high-end, and well-kept gym, this all-encompassing wellness wonderland hosts LA’s top trainers, doctors and management team. While the NYC location just re-opened in early September, only 16 people are allowed inside at a time, per social distancing — 8 trainers and 8 members. This intimate gym experience is hardly a change; pre-pandemic, only 24 people could be present: once again, half trainers, half members. With only a few coveted spots available in Performix House LA, west coast fitness fanatics eagerly wait for coronavirus to be curbed in California — if only to attain a membership at 9200 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, which also happens to be the home of Soho House West Hollywood. performixdriven.com
