THE JOYS OF SUMMER
S
Just Down the Road
ummer is finally here! This is my favorite season of the year when we can enjoy the warm outdoors, long lazy days, summer Fridays, rooftop alfresco dining, BBQs, and weekend getaways to the beach. As New Yorkers anxiously plan their weekend getaways there are still plenty of reasons to enjoy a staycation in the city. For June we are proud to feature one of the best soccer players in the history of the sport- Christiano Ronaldo who is considered a hero in his native Portugal. Literally at the top of his game, and easily one of the most recognized people on the planet with over 97 million Instagram followers- this superstar discusses his life as a celebrity, his love of Portugal, and the exciting launch of his eponymous CR7 jeans line.
As we head into summer and shed the layers that shrouded us throughout the winter, we begin to shift our focus on our overall physical wellbeing. Tapping into the latest technologies for hair restoration is the team at New York Medicine Doctors Center that offers multispecialty services for patients in NYC. One of the areas that makes them unique in the city is their revolutionary SmartGraft hair restoration and transplant treatment that reveals permanent and natural results with minimal recovery time. This month they discuss in detail about their exciting new procedure. During summer it’s all about the weekend getaways. This month we spotlighted the exciting and vibrant destination of Miami. We covered the hottest restaurants hitting their culinary scene, their newest hotels on the landscape, and the ultra luxurious residential properties in Miami’s burgeoning neighborhoods. This is truly a city that never sleeps. The dog days of summer just beckon an exotic escape as we covered other destinations such as Cape Cod, Bimini, Puerto Rico, Venice and Dubrovnik taking us around the globe. Of course the social season kicks off in the Hamptons after Memorial Day with a whirlwind of not to be missed soirees in our Hamptons Preview.

GENEVA ON THE LAKE
With warmer weather comes another favorite pastime- alfresco dining with a view. Whether it’s on a rooftop or along the Hudson River- we are once again reminded that we live on an island after all. The glittering Manhattan skyline also served as a backdrop to our fashion and beauty spread depicting a modern Rapunzel in NYC.

ALEXEY KLOKOV’S COLLECTION By Elizabeth Darwen
A
lexey Klokov, an internationally recognized artist with 25 years of professional experience, exhibited his Collection of Suggestive Abstract & Abstract Moderne paintings at ArtExpo New York 2017, the world’s largest fine art trade show. The exhibition took place at ArtExpo’s Booth at Pier 94. Klokov’s paintings are widely represented in private and corporate collections all over the world, and has exhibited in Russia, Austria, Japan, the UK, USA and Canada. Some of the notable and celebrity collectors include: Silvio Berlusconi, Hillary Clinton, the family of Emir of Qatar, Tony Blair, Condoleezza Rice, Madeleine Albright, Boris Johnson, Quentin Tarantino, Emir Kusturica, Patrick Swayze, Paco Rabanne, and Marwan Chatila. Alexey Klokov, a second generation artist, was born in 1965 in RusModus Vivendi
The Balancing Act
sia. The impetus to navigate his own way in the world of art was attributable to his first teacher - the famous avant-garde artist of 20th century Anatoly Zverev. Certified in 1991 as an artist and art restorer by the Saint Petersburg Higher School of Art and Industry, Alexey worked in the restoration workshops of the Hermitage (Saint Petersburg) and Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow). As he was literally “in touch” with the masterpieces of the world’s great artists including Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso and others, Alexey created the opportunity to learn from them “without words”. In 1994 Alexey Klokov took residence in a monastery devoting himself to icon-painting. There he explored the secrets of gilding and the great power of symbolism embodied in the image. After four years of consistent work he achieved the confidence to embark on his own artistic career. The theme of his first exhibition in 1998 in Moscow was an expression of his monastery experience. His special guest of honor, designer Paco Rabanne, deeply connected with the spirituality of Alexey’s artworks and purchased the first two pieces for his collection. Since then the artist’s paintings have been widely exhibited throughout Russia and abroad including the USA, Japan, the UK and Austria. The arrival of his exclusive agent and wife Naira Velumyan to Canada has introduced North American audience to his new collection of enamel on linen paintings named “Suggestive Abstract”. The art embodies an uniqueness that is simultaneously suggestive and subliminal, and reveals many shapes and forms of meaning, which is subject to a personal interpretation. alexklokov.com
European Organic Food
INNOVATIVE ORGANIC PRODUCTS FROM EUROPE Given that the Summer Fancy Food Show is the largest and most prominent American trade show for food products offered by producers from around the world who focus on innovative solutions in production, among other things, it is only appropriate for the exhibitors from Europe to also show up at the event. For the second time, the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York will be attended by the representatives of the “Polish Ecology” Association, presenting a promotional programme titled “ECOEUROPE – QUALITY AND TRADITION”.
The guests who visited the “ECOEUROPE – QUALITY AND TRADITION” stand at the trade show last summer were able to learn about the idea behind this exceptional promotion, as well as get to know the product offer presented by the programme. All of them admired the organic food from Europe, admitting that it is worth propagating across the United States. It is already well-known in many countries, partially thanks to this promotional programme, which – by participating in trade shows and exhibitions in Asia and America – has become a platform for collaboration of European organic producers with distributors and traders from across the globe. Caring for the preservation of the culinary and agricultural heritage of the Old Continent by taking advantage of state-ofthe-art technological solutions and innovations in bio-food production is one of the main goals pursued by the creators of the “ECOEUROPE – QUALITY AND TRADITION” programme and &$03$,*1 ),1$1&(' :,7+ $,' FROM THE EUROPEAN UNION $1' 7+( 5(38%/,& 2) 32/$1'
everyone who is in charge of bringing it to life. All of them want to draw attention to the dynamic development of organic farming and processing in the European Union. The producers of organic food products – distinguished by the EU certificate, symbolised by the characteristic Euro-Leaf – draw on tradition, regionalism and culinary heritage in the process of production and processing, offering the consumers processed fruit and vegetables, as well as meat products produced according to the old recipes, using cutting-edge technology. Organic food producers from the European Union, Poland included, focus on innovative solutions, which allow for preserving the freshness, taste and nutritional benefits of their products. The three year-programme promoting organic food products from the European Union is carried out by the “Polish Ecology” Association of Processors and Producers of Organic Products, on the basis of cooperation with scientists from the best facilities, state-of-the-art laboratories and certification bodies. The Association also cooperates with the IFOAM organisation (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements). The goal of the “Polish Ecology” Association is to promote food products bearing the Organic Agriculture Certificate and the Euro-Leaf, characterised by exceptional flavour and quality, stemming from referring to traditions in farming, adhering to the principles and standards of organic farming, as well as the high standards of bio-crops and bio-processing, such as HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point), ISO (Quality Management Systems), as well as GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) and GHP (Good Hygienic Practice). “ECOEUROPE – QUALITY AND TRADITION” aims to promote the outstanding taste of organic products from the European Union; therefore, it is worth visiting the programme’s exhibition stand during this year’s Summer Fancy Food Show. Every day, the best chefs from Poland will present their own eco-shows, proving to everyone that organic fruit and vegetable farming, as well as animal production and processing, is the most dynamic branch of agriculture in the European Union, and organic products, with their truly exceptional taste, should find their way to every American table. LAURA KIMPTON By George Wayne
F
orgive the effusive writer for being ever personal here. But, simply stated, the San Francisco based artist Laura Kimpton-- is for GW--one of the coolest chicks on the planet! I adore her sang froid, her effortless chic, and most of all her singular and particular artistic point of view. Laura Kimpton garnered her art world fame as the conceptual force behind the Monumental World Series that began in 2009 at the annual Burning Man art event held in Nevada every week leading up to the special Labor Day weekend in the United States. Her gargantuan and revolutionary conceptual designs have inspired shock and awe at Burning Man for years and counting. Dare I say it? Yes, I will! Laura Kimpton is the undeniable diva-art-queen of Burning Man. And now she has conquered the rarified Chelsea gallery art world with her amazing solo show at the HG Contemporary Gallery which was the talk of the Frieze Art Week extravaganza in New York City and which the art world cognoscenti is still talking about to this day! It’s time to meet the artist.....!! GW - I have heard about the feminist id but the master-piece of your latest one-woman show seems to be all about
your feminist ego. The huge gold bust with fecund enormous breasts with erect nipples topped with the head of an ape! You are certainly giving your audience something to talk about! LK- The idea began with the intention of doing my take on the typical Venetian bust which are usually fake boobs. And those are my interpretation of real tits. And I wanted to also remind the world that we are all animals. We almost forget that we are animals. We feel as if we are the superiors on earth and those military emblazoned shoulders is to signify female empowerment. And I guess the nipples are erect because that is what I am used to. GW- Well the work certainly commands attention. LK- I started thinking about this idea at Art Basel two years ago. GW - And your coup-de-theatre on opening night was the interactive episode when the guests at the show took sledgehammers and pummeled one of the major pieces of the show. It seemed to be all about the EGO con-
structed and then the EGO destructed. LK- I did this at Burning Man last year. But the EGO piece there was more than 60 feet tall. This version of EGO which is made out of wood and plaster of paris was the piece de resistance of the opening night of the show. And if you see the video of the event you will understand what I mean. When I did the version at Burning Man it was 60 feet tall and 30 feet wide and they are still talking about it to this day. At Burning Man, of course, we burnt it to the ground. But for the show at HG Contemporary we sledge-hammered it to pieces. It was just incredible. In the rubble we left an archival 3 foot EGO that is for sale. What I believe is that we should all have an ego. I hate people who don’t believe in who they are. Having an ego is not being narcissistic. Having an ego is about knowing who you are. It’s the human ego that thinks we are the number one on earth is what I have a problem with. GW - Your work is often on such a grand scale and you are world acclaimed as the the Art Queen of Burning Man and known for your huge, huge, mega-huge, mega-monumental art creations/ installations at the world famous gathering known as Burning Man out there in the vast arid landscape of Nevada every LK- So I have been an artist my entire life. I was even an art teacher for twelve years working with at-risk children. I am a Gemini dyslexic, ADHD so I can relate to the at risk child. I have degrees in Art, Education and Psychology. But it was after the birth of my daughter that my creative mind exploded and so in the art world of San Francisco going to Burning Man is sort of a rite of passage. So I went for the first time in 2003 with one of my old art students and I met David Best who is recognized as the most famous Burning Man artist who builds all the temples at Burning Man. And I met this man and he basically changed my life. GW - In what way? LK- He taught me that art is not sacred and that art is about the process most of all He builds seven story temples out there that go a mile long and

that by the end of Burning Man are all burnt to the ground. Just imagine at the end of every Burning Man on that Sunday night with more than 70,000 people surrounding that burning temple and no one is saying a word. It is completely silent apart from the burning embers. And so I came home from that experience a changed person. So I decided to put all my energies into Burning Man. So I have made art that I have burnt. I have made art that requires a crew of 60 people to create and a full year to construct specifically for Burning Man which takes place in this dry lake bed about two hours from Reno. it is this 32 mile dry lake bed surrounded by mountains. GW- Sounds like a surreal setting. LK- I always say that it must be what Neil Armstrong felt like when he walked on the moon. It’s that kind of feeling --the whole setting. GW - So Burning Man is that entire week every year leading up to Memorial Day and you continue to make an incredible statement with your art as mega spectacle. Which is exactly what you did on a much smaller but nonetheless equally eye-catching one woman show at the HG Contemporary Gallery in Chelsea this Spring. It was a sight to behold on opening night with your huge gold bust of the Laura Kimpton Ape Woman with her enormous breasts and erect nipples her shoulders adorned with military regalia like some Third World dictator. Talk about the ultimate Instagram ready moment during Art Frieze week in New York City. It was quite the statement piece. LK- This is my first solo show in New York City and with a very reputable gallery. I had to make a statement. GW - So from Burning Man I have another burning question. GW is assuming that you and your vast management team must be mulling the possibility of creatinga commissioned work for the brand new $5 billion dollar futuristic corporate headquarters out there in Silicon Valley dubbed -- Apple Park. You must be friends with Tim Cook! Has he not asked you to create one of your famous LOVE signs for the new Apple Park in Cupertino, California and
all that curated 175 acres of landscaped acreage tailor made for a Laura Kimpton LOVE sculpture! LK- The interesting thing about San Francisco is that they don’t seem to support and have much interest for the work of San Francisco artists. San Francisco doesn’t buy San Francisco artists. And I am even more upset by the way my city has been destroyed by the dot.com billions. It used to be the wildest place on earth and now it’s just the most boring. All they do is look at computers all day long. They have destroyed my city. All they do is talk podcasts and social media. Nobody goes out anymore in San Francisco. GW - Speaking of the Getty’s. You also come from an old money San Francisco dynasty the Kimpton’s. You were probably de-flowered by a Getty! All that old money, internecine intermingling. LK- No I wasn’t. I was an odd child. My sister was the beauty and I was the ugly duckling in the corner playing with mud. And I actually grew up on the North Shore of Chicago with my mother. When I would visit my father and step-mother in San Francisco for Christmas and a month in the summer. I moved to San Francisco as soon as I graduated from college. GW - I over heard someone at the show opening here in New York City saying they wereimpressed at how ‘’cohesive’’ your show was. LK- The reason it’s so cohesive is because I am a trained photographer who studied under Mary
Ellen Mark. So I have always believed in balance so even though the work is what I call -- ‘assemblage’’ there is rhyme to the reason. I like to think of myself as a student of Rauschenberg. I am a collage artist. GW - And the art is certainly Instagramready. LK- I don’t set out working and thinking that way. Although it may be that is not something I set out to do. And yes, just six months ago I only has 12,000 followers on Instagram which has now doubled that. But I don’t think of it in that way. GW - Is this new work Pop Art or Art Pop? LK- Neither one. Maybe the monkey room is Pop Art but I consider the work emotional art. GW- What would you say is the defining signature for your work? LK- Making old ugly things beautiful --even myself! GW - Well, GW considers you the coolest, old school hippie chick he has ever met. You are hippie bourgeois but cool hippie bourgeois! And your work certainly speaks for itself. Hearty congratulations are certainly in order. Your first solo show in New York City is an unquestionable success. LK- I am total Gemini which means I’m not just black and white. There are many shades to this hippie chick. Laurakimpton.com

BEHIND THE VELVET ROPE JUNE 2017
By Joe Alexander with Photographs by Patrick McMullan

CURLISTO As we head into the hot summer days of high humidity, here are some of our favorite options for beating the heat and getting that rested glow to ease into the effortless days of summer. Celebrity stylist and global artistic director, Christo, of his namesake Christo Fifth Avenue and Curlisto Systems is the hair guru for all seasons. To combat the damaging effects of winter, chemical treatments and hot tools, Christo has created the Curlisto Damage Control Treatment to prepare your locks for the summer season. This 45 minute treatment at the Christo Fifth Avenue Salon reconstructs the hair cortex to deliver healthy and long lasting hydration that is customized to your individual hair texture. By using a patented formula enriched with wheat and rice protein, amino acids, keratins, collagens, silk peptides and white tea extracts, this non chemical protein treatment repairs and reverses the effects of damage that causes dry hair and split ends. This 7 step process starts with spraying the hair and letting it process under heat. Then a softening collagen solution is used to seal in moisture while softening the hair, inhibiting frizz, and also add luster and shine. Once hair is styled you will notice instant results of smoother, shinier, softer and frizz free hair. Christo Fifth Avenue 35 W 45 St, 3rd Floor NYC 212 997 8810 | Curlisto.com

its technology. SmartGraft technology was recently released and is light years ahead of the completion. There are dozens of improvements with SmartGraft . This leads to higher rate of successful graft transplant and much better results. The follicle growth rate is over 95% with the new SmartGraft system. Now we can harvest grafts easier, faster and provide better outcomes. The SmartGraft procedure works for both men and women. It also works great on the eyebrows and facial hair as well. RM: What hair types are the best candidates for the SmartGraft procedure? DS: With SmartGraft was can treat all races, nationalities and patients with all hair colors and textures. If you have been turned down or told you were not a candidate in the past, you likely can now have this revolutionary treatment done at NYMD Hair Restoration Center of Excellence.
Dr. David Shusterman, NYMD Hair Restoration Center
RM: Tell me about some of your revolutionary procedures and how it’s changing the industry. How does this differentiate your practice from your peers? DS: Follicle Unit Extraction (FUE) has become the “gold standard” treatment over the traditional “strip method” because SmartGraft FUE transplant is minimally invasive, offers less pain, quicker recovery, with no scar formation as there are no incisions made in the skin. Using only local anesthetic, hair grafts are removed individually from the permanent hair-bearing scalp skin using innovative SmartGraft Technology. Facilitating very fast recovery, within 2 days all the micro-incisions are healed and there are no stitches to be removed. Most patients can go back to work the next day and can resume normal physical activities in just a few days. The answer to your question is summed up: No pain. No stitches. No scars. No downtime. SG: Dr. Shusterman and I are co-founders of NYMD Hair Restoration Center of Excellence, as we partner with Joe Lore a tricologist who brings with him 20 years of experience in non-surgical hair restoration. NYMD Hair Restoration Center differs with other
centers in that we look at your hair loss in a holistic manner. We use a multidisciplinary approach with a combination of treatment options to treat hair loss. We are able to offer the latest cutting edge technologies in regenerative, non-surgical and minimally invasive surgery hair restoration all in one location for one stop shop. We specialize in tailoring the right treatment for our patients. RM: Is follicular unit extraction technology new? What is special about SmartGraft? SG: No FUE technology has been around for many years. But, not all FUE procedures are the same! SmartGraft is the newest and most technologically advanced machine on the market. It offers the safest and most efficient way to perform a F.U.E. transplant. The SmartGraft technology harvests grafts more efficiently, using programmable suction. Using the device we gently remove, separate and count the grafts, and then store them in a temperature-controlled sterile solution. This method facilitates better hair follicle survival rates and healthier, more naturallooking results in our patients. DS: Other FUE companies have been on the market for over 10 years with almost no improvement in
RM: What are the main causes in men or women of hair loss or thinning? DS: In men with hair loss, the most common cause is hereditary androgenetic alopecia, more commonly known as “male pattern baldness”, similarly women may present with hereditary female pattern of hair loss. In hereditary androgenetic alopecia, SG: It is important to understand that most of us lose 70-100 hairs from our scalps every day. This is a natural or normal process, where some hairs remain dormant, while some hair begins to grow new hair. As long as there is a balance the number of hair on scalp may remain constant and this does not need to be treated. We can determine that on our evaluation. Factors such as hormones, stress, medications, thyroid conditions, iron deficiency, surgeries, diets, skin conditions, childbirth can impair this balance leading to or worsening of hair loss. RM: Is there any medication that can treat hair loss? DS: Propecia, minoxadil and other medications can slow hair loss. We offer our patients a special topical mixture of several of the best medications in one formulation to apply to the scalp. This leads to much less side effects as the medication is not absorbed into your body and just absorbed and acts locally on your scalp. But even with treatment, eventually your hair will continue to fall out. The only permanent solution could be hair transplant.
resident.com | 31
SG: The issues with medications by mouth or locally besides side effects, is that they must be used on a continual basis in order to sustain results and if discontinued, the problem of baldness, hairloss or thinning will resume. Come in for a free evaluation to see what treatment is right for you.
Dr. Sireen Gopal, MD. NYMD Hair Restoration Center
RM: Who are the best candidates for this SmartGraft transplant procedure? SG: We treat all patients’ men and women with hair loss or thinning from all causes, whether it may be genetic or environmental. Anyone who has experienced permanent hair loss can be a candidate for hair restoration and transplant, most commonly men with male pattern baldness and women with hair loss DS: Due to the latest SmartGraft technology we can treat all hair colors and textures. All races including African-Americans can now be treated. We can restore hair in any area where more hair is wanted. Patients can restore or change the shape of their hairline. Scars in the scalp or face from prior plastic surgery or skin disease can now be treated. Eye brows and beards have also become popular areas to add natural and permanent hair. RM: How long does this procedure take? Does it need to be repeated? DS: This is a minor office procedure that can take up to 3-7 hours depending on the number of micrografts and size of area of baldness or hair loss. Usually most men require 2000 individual follicular grafts. Depending on the degree and size of baldness the patient may undergo 1-2 more procedures over the course of his lifetime. This is dependent on the degree of additional hair loss. RM: How is this procedure tolerated and what is the down time? SG: SmartGraft hair transplant is remarkably well tolerated. Within 24 hours small crusts will form and transplant donor and recipient sites will be barely noticeable. The transplanted hair will start to grow by 3 months and will continue to grow for life. The results is a full and natural-looking hairline with minimal downtime and no visible scars, unlike the older “Strip Method” hair transplants used at other centers. RM: If the follicle didn’t take to one part of the scalp, does that mean that area is blocked? DS: With the State of the Art SmartGraft technology we achieve a 95-98% successfully graft rate. The SmartGraft system makes the hair transplant process

easier, quicker, less discomfort, and more successful— the viability of each graft is improved by the innovative “SmartHarvest” collection process that can be individually programmed to fit each patient’s needs.
growth (also called angiogenesis), thereby opening new perspectives for PRP in hair restoration and tissue remodeling. PRP takes approximately 45 minutes and generally 2-3 treatments are advised.
RM: What is PRP or plasma or regenerative therapy and how is it helpful for hair loss? SG: We have been performing Platelet Rich Plasma procedures, also known as “PRP” injections in muscle, tendon, joint, skin and hair. PRP has been used in medicine for over 20 years now. A small amount of blood is drawn from a patient and specially processed to separate its components to concentrate a pure PRP fluid. When PRP fluid is injected into the affected area it causes a mild inflammation that triggers the healing cascade. As the platelets organize in the clot they release a number of enzymes to promote healing and tissue responses including attracting stem cells and growth factors. As a result new cells begin to develop. In hair loss, this novel modality is based on promoting new blood vessel
RM: Is PRP similar to the Vampire facial, but on your scalp? DS: Not exactly! In PRP injection of the scalp we inject in the dermal layer of skin to promote hair follicle growth, unlike the Vampire facial, which only injects PRP in the superficial layer of the facial skin. PRP has many positive effects in the body, besides skin and hair. PRP has been shown to mobilize your own stem cells for your body’s benefit. PRP injection is safe with minimal risk, short recovery time, natural looking results and only local anesthesia is needed. RM: Joe Lore, can you tell us about your background. JL: We have over 20 years of experience in hair restoration in both men and women. Over the
years we have garnered accolades for a number of our technologies including being voted the top hair restoration center in the country by many networks in the fashion and beauty industry, most notably the No. 1 hair restoration center in the country by VSN network. Our expertise in field of Ultra-Sonic Hair Extensions led us to be chosen as a sponsor of the MTV movie and video awards.
Joseph G. Lore, NYMD Hair Restoration Center
RM: What separates your extensions from those done at other centers? JL: From a fashion point of view, our hair extensions are not comparable to anything in the market today. The way it adheres to the hair is technologically the most advanced because it does not compromise the integrity of the existing hair. Often women may opt to shop price rather than quality and end up with low end extensions attached with glue or heat or attachments that may damage their existing hair. We are also the only one that has an extension called Milan Capelli. This ultra high-end, top-ofthe-line extension is unlike any other. Imported from Italy, we offer our clients the opportunity to wear the finest European human hair combined with a pure protein tip applied cold. This is the best of the best! Hair loss is our specialty RM: What makes the Hair Restoration Center at NYMD a Center of Excellence? JL: We can treat all clients with any degree of hair loss, with both the latest surgical and non-surgical technology on the market all in one center. There is no other center like ours in New York! RM: What is cosmetic transdermal reconstruction (CTR)? Is it kind of like a wig? JL: Absolutely NOT. CRT is a human hair technology usually stays on for 4 weeks, while a wig you put on and take off your head on a daily basis sort of like a hat. It is transparent like a contact lens, thin, delicate and simulates the look of a transplant. We start with a blend of 8 polymers that’s truly transparent as the skin or base with which we use human hair purchased from Europe and India. We can control the growth patterns, wave and density of hair that one may want and we can ensure a color match. What we create here imitates transplant but does not grow. Sometimes combining CTR with SmartGraft transplants can create an unbelievably realistic head of hair. RM: Does transdermal reconstruction (CTR) hurt?
JL: No, not at all, because it is noninvasive, and does not involve surgery, there is no pain. It is a thin, delicate and life like, but to achieve a transplant like look, a new CTR skin needs to be applied on a monthly basis, which is attached with a medical adhesive directly onto your scalp. RM: What are your strengths? JL: My vision and passion to be a leader in a field of hair loss. I take great pride in the fact that I was one of the very first to specialize in Low-Level Laser Light Therapy (LLLT). LLLT can stop or slow down severe diffusion in about 4-16 weeks on average. This state-of-the-art technology amazingly stops the progression of hair loss in 85% of patients that undergo treatment, while possibly promoting regrowth. Approximately 53% of patients can experience regrowth, when combining with PRP this percentage goes up even higher. Re-growing hair is not as easy as stopping hairloss, which is why we recommend LLLT and PRP.
RM: How expensive is the procedure? JL: We have a multi-faceted customized approach to hairloss. The cost will depend on what the client chooses, included in the cost is a hair and scalp regimen combining with all natural Anagen growth products and supplements based on the recommended treatment and a sophisticated hair density analysis testing. RM: What advice would you give to patients? JL: Keeping what hair you have during hair loss is crucial to one’s self confidence. My best advice is “Don’t wait and think that your hair loss will stop on its own... It usually doesn’t!”

LEADING THE WAY IN
INNOVATIVE HAIR RESTORATION By Cynthia Rager COO, Vision Medical, Inc.
S
martGraft® is the newest innovation in hair restoration technology. This technology gives both men and women searching for a permanent solution to hair loss, the natural results to help you feel and look younger. Not only does SmartGraft provide amazing results, this treatment is minimally invasive with a quick recovery time. We all know hair loss is a common problem for both men and women. Half of all women will suffer with hair loss during their lives, and as many as 40% will experience female pattern hair loss (FPHL) by the age of 40. Women lose their hair for a variety of reasons, including genetic predisposition, stress, diet, hormone changes, and other lifestyle factors. Female hair loss is different from male pattern hair loss, yet just as impactful

to one’s self-confidence. For women, over-all hair thinning is a frequent complaint as well as hair miniaturization or loss in the temple area, making it difficult to wear certain hairstyles, such as a simple ponytail or updo. A frequent complaint for women is loss of eyebrow hair, as well as a “ part-line” showing too much scalp. Sometimes hair loss occurs because of scarring, from surgery, accidents, chemotherapy or alopecia conditions. All of these conditions have the same potential for hair loss in men, compounded by even more frequently occurring male pattern baldness. In fact, by the age of 50, 85% of men have significantly thinning hair. With this latest technology available to you it is time to get “SMART” about hair loss and how it can be simply treated. “We have the best, newest technology on the market,” explains Cynthia Rager, Chief Operating Office
of Vision Medical Inc. “The SmartGraft device was built with the needs of the physician and the comfort of the patient in mind. SmartGraft has changed the patient experience in hair transplantation, industry-wide.” Cynthia Rager, a partner in the company, joined Vision Medical, Inc., the makers of the SmartGraft Hair Transplantation Device, in 2013, when SmartGraft was in the research and development phase. Today, Cynthia continues to focus on company operations and innovation, putting her clinical training and plastic surgery clinic experience to use developing physician programs and products. For Vision Medical, it’s all about patient experience. As Cynthia mentioned, SmartGraft is the best technology available and Vision Medical provides support beyond compare to the physicians who use their equipment. But none of that matters if
the patient experience isn’t positive, therefore Vision Medical focuses on patient experience. For the hair transplant patient, there are three things that are extremely important: • First, will the treatment bring me the desired results? • How quickly can I return to normal activities after the transplant? • How long does the procedure take and will it be painful? Ms. Rager responded to those questions to give us further insight. Will SmartGraft Hair Transplantation provide the patient with the desired results? “Graft survivability has a direct impact on results. Patients seeking hair transplants are most often quoted for surgical fees based on the number of transplanted hair grafts. At Vision Medical, we want the grafts to be in the most efficacious environment during extraction and prior to implantation, in order for all of them to survive and grow well. Our device creates the most hospitable environment possible, by chilling and hydrating with a shower, so that the grafts can survive and thrive. The grafts also have a better viability simply from the fact that the procedure does not take as long as using other transplant methods or equipment. The grafts are out and back into the implant area much more quickly. Our machine also counts the grafts that are extracted— other equipment does not—so the patient knows just what they are getting, as well as the physician knowing when he has reached the target number.” Following transplant surgery, how quickly can the patient return to their normal daily activities? “With SmartGraft FUE (follicular unit extraction), only a small area at the back of the head is generally shaved for the extraction process. Longer hair above the extraction area may be used to cover the shaved area making it inconspicuous to others. The extractions are very small (usually 1 mm or less) and close over rapidly. In some cases of very short hair, the area is not even visible after several days. The implanted area may stay red and a bit swollen for a day or two, but the entire head of hair can be washed within 2-3 days! As you can see, patients can return to normal activities very quickly. No one will know you’ve had hair transplant surgery. The implanted hair will go into a dormant phase, and will shed, but the hair root will be intact
and growth will phase in gradually and will continue over a period of 9-12 months to achieve its fullest potential.” How long does the hair transplant procedure take, and will it be painful? “SmartGraft is designed with both physician needs and patient comfort in mind. Due to its unique design, SmartGraft helps the physician move through the hair extraction process more rapidly than other methods allow. Hours of time can be cut from the traditional 6 to 8 hours of treatment time. With all of the technological improvements offered by SmartGraft – better hand-piece design, safer graft storage environment, unique shapes and sizes of extraction punches to suit all hair types and for both male and female scalp conditions, better lighting to improve visibility in the surgical field, and many more—the strain on the physician performing the surgery is dramatically reduced. This promotes better outcomes. Additionally, stress to the patient is greatly reduced simply because the time they spend undergoing the procedure in the treatment chair is reduced. This provides a better, faster, and happier experience for the patient as well. “ “Because there is no scalpel, sutures, or linear wound recovery and therefore, no visible linear scar, there is little to no discomfort from the procedure or during the healing process. Physicians report that the patients are happier with the experience as well as with the outcomes.” Roger Parkin, CEO of Vision Medical, and former owner of other medical surgical equipment companies, developed the concepts and worked with a team of design engineers to create the innovative technology of SmartGraft. During the research and development phase, he interviewed doctors performing hair transplantation, observing hair follicular unit extraction, and asking them how the process could be improved upon. He then worked with his engineering team to design the equipment with those improvements in mind. “My goal was to make the technological improvements to the machine that physicians needed to create better outcomes for the patient than was previously being experienced before SmartGraft was available,” explains Parkin. “SmartGraft is manufactured completely in the USA in our own manufacturing facility so we have total control of the quality. We respond to the physician or consumer needs with speed and accuracy.” The SmartGraft FUE Clinical Advantage benefits both the physician and the patient. SmartGraft
allows for efficient donor follicle harvesting. It is a closed harvesting system which means the hair grafts are extracted and stored at the same time and are kept cold and moist, increasing their viability. SmartGraft automates many of the required transplantation steps so treatment times are significantly reduced, which means the grafts will be transplanted quicker. It also reduces physician and patient fatigue. They no longer have to remain in one position for hours. The patient does not have to shave their entire head, which benefits patient privacy. Additionally, SmartGraft works with physicians who are employing exciting, innovative techniques fairly new to the industry, such as a totally “Shaveless Technique” and rapid punch harvesting. SmartGraft employs the newest extraction technology which means minimum penetration of the scalp and reduced probability of transecting the hair follicle. By using the principles of fluid dynamics and suction, the hair follicle is extracted in a clean and gentle manner, with less handling which reduces shock trauma to the follicle. In addition, SmartGraft utilizes specially designed punches, so the physician has choice and control of the best tool for each individual patient’s procedure. Another patient advantage of the SmartGraft FUE procedure is the lack of a linear scar. By using a tiny follicle punch, the site closes rapidly within 24 hours and can be completely undetectable within about a week. DENTAL FACIAL AESTHETICS “If you invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life.” - Frank Lloyd Wright
W
hen it comes to dental care, the father and daughter team of Drs. Michael and Morgan Herman are a dynamic duo at the cutting edge of dentistry. From a hidden private oasis on Central Park South, clients get the best of both worlds. From Dr. Michael Herman’s 40 years of experience as a leader in cosmetic dentistry - creating and perfecting some of the world’s famous smiles - to Dr. Morgan Herman’s, more earthly, holistic, Gen-X approach, incorporating total body health and wellness. They are the yin and yang of complete dental health offering an unprecedented level of care in an elegant, laid back, and unhurried environment where they are attentive to their patients’ needs and desired results. It’s clear that their aim is to please their patients no matter what. Even if someone requests a dance with Dr. Michael or help with a yoga asana from Dr. Morgan, they are happy to oblige. Walk us through an initial new patient visit. DR. MICHAEL: We believe the mouth is really the window into your body and we recommend starting with a comprehensive oral exam which is an extensive evaluation that can detect dental as well as medical conditions, often uncovering symptoms before they show up elsewhere in the body. This exam includes an oral cancer screening, TMJ/TMD exam, x-rays, clinical exam, intraoral and extraoral photographs, and a scan to make a digital record of the mouth. DR. MORGAN: The scan is my favorite part of the exam! We have an amazing iTero scanner that makes a 3D digital model of the patient’s mouth instantaneously. It doesn’t require any gag-inducing impression material or trays and only takes a few minutes. And since the models are digital and interactive they are the absolute best patient education tool. It’s so cool getting to show my patient’s their own mouth the way that I get to see their mouth and watching them learn more about themselves. It’s also great for tracking changes in the mouth over time, whether that’s movement of teeth, changes in the gums, or wear on the teeth. DR. MICHAEL: Once we complete the evaluation, we focus on our patients’ needs and wants from cleanings, fillings, implants, veneers - the full gamut of dental needs – to create a comprehensive treatment plan that utilizes the latest techniques and equipment. We go to all lengths to make the visit as painless and pleasant as

humanly possible. You even get candy from our fully stocked candy jar after your visit providing you have been on your best behavior, or course! Well that sure sounds thorough. Do you have any favorite procedures? DR. MORGAN: I have really fallen in love with Invisalign! I have begun to think of it as yoga for your teeth and the benefits are just as profound. Proper oral alignment improves so much more than your facial esthetics. Having a “good bite” will not only drastically improve your oral and systemic hygiene, improve your mouth’s form and function, stop recession and tooth wear dead in their tracks, and reduce or completely eliminate grinding, clenching, snoring, and sleep apnea, but a stable bite can have positive effects on neck pain, shoulder pain, and even lower back pain. Invisalign is easily one of the best preventative treatments on the market and greatly reduces the need for major dental work in the future, saving patients’ time, money, and discomfort. My patients absolutely love this esthetic alternative to traditional braces and positively beam in their new smiles. Knowing that I have given them the confidence and comfort to smile is a phenomenal feeling. DR. MICHAEL: I enjoy practicing dental facial aesthetics. When it comes to a smile makeover or full mouth rehabilitation, I feel that the teeth and smile need to fit into the entire framework of your face. To this end, and to achieve a youthful smile, I work hand in hand with our on-premises plastic surgeon to administer dermal fillers to smooth wrinkles and tighten areas around the mouth and chin to fully complete the entire aesthetic dental result we are creating. Research shows that people with a brighter and whiter smile look on average 11 years younger and have more confidence. I also enjoy treating snoring, sleep apnea, and TMJ/ TMD patients since I have advanced training in these fields and am a Diplomate in the American Academy of Pain Management and a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Over 32 million people suffer with some form of sleep apnea and, if left untreated, this condition can lead to serious health issues - even death. To resolve this disorder we first diagnose our patients using a state of the art at-home sleep apnea testing device so that our patients do not need to go to an outside facility. Our office utilizes the cost effective and convenient Aveo TSD, a small oral device that holds the tongue in place and eliminates snoring, while opening the airways or, when needed in more serious cases, a custom oral appliance. These appliances result
in a better night sleep and better overall healthy outlook for our patients. You two really love what you do! Are you working on any new projects or goals for the future? DR. MICHAEL: We recently launched the most precious toothpaste on the market, Diamond White the only patented toothpaste that harnesses the polishing power of genuine diamonds to safely and effectively remove stains from teeth and veneers while polishing, whitening, and enhancing one’s smile. DR. MORGAN: I’m in the business of making smiles and it is truly one of the most rewarding jobs there is. The proven health benefits of simply smiling range from increasing brain function to appearing younger to plain old making you happy! And best of all, smiles are contagious so everyone you meet will share in these benefits! My goal is to make the world a happier place one smile at a time. DENTAL FACIAL AESTHETICS: WHERE PEOPLE COME IN AS PATIENTS AND LEAVE AS FRIENDS. You are the best soccer player in the world which is incredible. How did you end up creating and launching your own brand? Fashion has always been an interest of mine, and denim is such a regular part of my off-field wardrobe that it seemed like a perfect starting point. I decided to work with Uniti Fashion on this line - they’re experts in design and manufacturing, so they’ve been great partners in helping me make my dreams a reality.
the color white throughout. To start, it will be offered in 4 styles, at 3 price points, so there will be something for everyone.
Tell us more about the brand itself and the range of clothing you offer, how does it reflect your personal style? I’ve always loved denim, but my problem was trying to find a pair of jeans that looked good and felt comfortable. That was really the inspiration behind the CR7 Denim line – it’s designed with movement in mind, so it’s perfect for active people with on-the-go lives. The collection also incorporates elements from my personal style, such as hints of
What are some of your favorite pieces from the line? Lately I’ve been wearing the Type-T in Navy Resin that I took home from a recent CR7 Denim campaign shoot.
Where do you plan on traveling this summer? I haven’t decided yet, but I’ll be happy to be anywhere that has sunshine and my loved ones.
Tell us a bit about your new hotel in Portugal. The hotel opened last summer and was a really exciting project to be a part of. We hope to appeal to a new generation of stylish, cultured, and
You are a hero and a symbol of success in Portugal, what are some of your favorite places in Portugal? For me, Madeira will always hold a special place in my heart, and I try to visit when I can.
Do you see your clothing line connecting you to your fans and consumers? I hope so. My relationship with my fans, especially my young fans, is very important to me. My style DNA is stitched into every piece of CR7 Denim, so I hope they see this collection as another avenue of connection to me.
adventurous young travelers. What are some of your future projects? I’m focusing on the CR7 Denim launch for now. We’re launching with a Men’s line, but maybe down the line we’ll expand to Junior’s. When you aren’t training or on tour what are some of the things you like to do at home? I try to just spend as much time as possible with my family and loved ones when I have downtime.

KACEY | SHANA SWIMWEAR Luxury WaterWear that Takes You Places By Staci Soslowitz
K
acey|Shana is a luxury waterwear brand that launched a new collection this past summer. The company started with two best friends who have a strong connection to the ocean and all the activities that they can do nearby. Both Kacey Brosnan and Shana Biwald spent numerous summers on the coastal Long Beach Island. It was here that their love for all things water began, including beach yoga and surfing. The young women came together to create a brand of versatile suits to fit their specific lifestyle. “We both grew up at the beach and were always so passionate about staying active. It was a natural progression for us to design a waterwear brand,” states Kacey Brosnan and Shana Biwald. With a background in fashion from LIM and a career in public relations, these two were able to create a high-end brand that appeals to their unique lifestyles.
The company’s initial collection of suits comes in 8 different styles and also contains a aquatic legging. “We have used our travels to create a waterwear lifestyle brand interconnected with the ocean, and your overall wellbeing.” Each piece features on-trend silhouettes with mesh necklines, laser cut-outs and fun prints and colors. Besides the look of the bathing suits, they all have removable bra cups, tassels and adjustable straps to ensure the versatility of the wearer. The fabric is both light and soft, therefore it feels like a second skin in or out of the water. The designs were inspired not only by places the duo has visited, such as The Hamptons and Montauk, but also famous islands like St. Barths and the Maldives. These stunning locations are the inspiration for their colors, prints and the overall aesthetic of the brand. The brand speaks to women who have an active lifestyle or just seeking adventure by
the sea. “Our inspiration comes from our personal lifestyles. As a surfer and yoga instructor, we created a line what we envisioned wearing.” These women also hope to continue expand from the East to the West Coast and already have a following in Miami South Beach where they have a pop up shop in the Confidante Hotel. They have also collaborated with handbag designers in Manhattan. This summer, the two will spend time in the Hampton’s as well as Sag Harbour. Here, they plan to host a plethora of events, like beach yoga to create more buzz for the company and demonstrate its versatility from active to leisure wear on the beach. The products can currently be bought on their website KaceyShana.com. Each suit costs $78-$108, per piece, depending on the style. Since these suits can be worn in different scenarios, they are worth every penny.

METTLE PROPERTY GROUP
By Staci Soslowitz
T
he real estate market has always been a risky business to be in. During the economic recession of 2008, many in the industry suffered great deficits. Gerard Longo, Principal of Mettle Property Group, managed to survive the economic downfall by taking risks on major projects. Resident Magazine sat down with Gerard Longo who tells us about his journey from the journey of his financial challenges during the recession to his successful rise to the top. RM: Did you always want to work in real estate? GL: Looking back, I never thought I would be where I am today. My interest in real estate began in college when I bought my first investment property and doing commercial
leasing. From there, I worked my way up the real estate ladder. Not only did I start flipping (renovating and selling) one to four family homes, I eventually built my way up to midrise buildings and super structures. Before I knew it, I was building hotels in cities like Miami and New York. This year we were approved for a dual branded Hilton Hotel in Long Island City, which included a Hampton Inn and a Homewood Suites. We are also involved in hospitality projects in Miami and have multiple commercial and residential projects in the works. RM: What are you currently working on in Miami? GL: 8995 Collins Avenue, which is a short distance from
Luxe Living
the Bal Harbour Shops. The location offers luxury beachfront condominiums designed by Thomas Juul-Hansen Architect in pre-development. RM: Throughout your career you have stayed pretty true to yourself. As a developer how do you choose between a small project and large one? GL: I am very proud of our accomplishments. We look at investments from a different perspective. Every job has to be solvent and has to make sense. Businesswise, it’s very easy to fall in love with the sex appeal of a development. For example, it’s easy to see a five-star hotel on the beach and say, “I would like to do that deal because of its stature;” but if it doesn’t make business sense, you can get caught in a trap and that’s where you make mistakes. In addition to our larger developments, we have a category that we call LSD, “Less Sexy Developments,” which consists of smaller developments under ten million dollars. For example, a six-unit condominium development or a string of four three family homes. I’d rather do several of these projects and make more money and have less risk. The bigger the job, the more people involved, and the more site specific safety issues we need to be concerned with, which increases the price. You have all of these extra costs that you have to account for with these bigger projects as opposed to a simple smaller project. You need to make a return on
your investment. If it has sex appeal, we certainly would love to work on the project, but, first and foremost, we have to protect the fiscal foundation of the job. RM: What project are you most proud of? GL: When the market crashed in ’08 and ’09, we were in the midst of launching The Pearline Soap Factory and The Fairchild, both in TriBeCa. The New York Times interviewed me and asked, “What would make you launch this project in this environment?” And it’s true, but you can’t plan for a recession when you purchase a property years in advance. That project represents every challenge and every obstacle possible. I was close to financial devastation; the banks froze every one of my accounts and were collapsing themselves to the FDIC. At one point, all of my projects were stalled. I had to do the only thing I could do, which was fight for my life. At the end of the day, they are two beautiful landmark buildings and the struggle I faced makes it a project that I won’t forget. RM: How did these projects end up doing? GL: There were sixteen projects in the Tribeca area that were under development at the time. Out of sixteen, only two of them succeeded and they both happened to be projects I was involved
with. The interesting thing is that it took a pound of flesh from me, but we still managed to turn a profit. You have to put your mindset back to 2008 and 2009; people’s stock portfolios were decimated and the idea of making any profit was out of the question, however we were able to achieve project completion and making a modest profit. When we were marketing the condos, I actually said to our broker, Raphael De Niro, “You know who the two luckiest people in the world are? The next two people that show interest in one of my buildings.” At the time, I needed to sell the condos to raise money quickly and those two people were about to get a really great deal. RM: You have two hotels, what else are you building? GL: We are currently transforming 70 Henry St, which was previously the Brooklyn Heights Cinema, into a boutique collection of brand new luxury residences. The five-star property has approximately 1500 square feet of prime retail space facing Henry Street. We’re also building that dual branded 290-key Hilton Hotel in Long Island City, which has approximately 20,000 square foot of retail space. The entire hotel complex with retail is almost a full city block. There’s also a luxury condominium project on 90th and Collins Avenue on the beach in Miami

ASTON MARTIN RESIDENCES
By Nina Kullmann
A
ston Martin is synonymous with luxury, beauty, and excellence in its craftsmanship. Aston Martin recently announced that it is collaborating with global property developer G and G Business Developments on a unique waterfront real estate project at the mouth of the Miami River, which will mark Aston Martin’s first foray into real estate. Resident Magazine sat down with Katia Bassi, Vice President at Aston Martin and Managing Director at AM Brands, who told us about the importance of “going beyond the brand” when it comes to luxury real estate. RM: Why is Aston Martin venturing into real estate? KB: Aston Martin is obsessed with design, shape, forms and proportions, so real estate project is the prefect way for Aston Martin to express this. RM: How will the brand’s team be involved in the design decisions? KB: The brand is working hand in hand with the team of designers to create that Aston Martin experience. We want to do something that everyone will recognize as an Aston Martin building, which reconnects with the values of the brand, which is why the Aston Martin design team will have a hand in every design decision made --

from the finishes in our kitchens and bathrooms to the art that hangs in our lobby. RM: How does this project differ from other projects where the brand is solely a marketing tool? KB: That is exactly what we want to avoid with Aston Martin Residences. An important thing for us is authenticity. Everything we do is very much related to the application of the Aston Martin DNA into a real estate project. We want to be unique and we don’t want to disappoint our customers as Aston Martin. If you buy one of our apartments you can breathe the atmosphere of the Aston Martin DNA. RM: Why did you choose Miami as the location for your project? KB: First of all, we have to say that one of the main factors is the partner- we wanted an outstanding and reliable partner and G&G Business Developments is definitely the perfect definition of what we were looking for. Secondly, we took our time and surveyed cities around the world for our first residential development, but we kept coming back to Miami. This opportunity presented the right partner, the right timing, the right location and the right backdrop for our launch. Miami’s global appeal, coupled with
the power of the Aston Martin brand, make a powerful combination and we’re excited about using this project as a springboard for future residential development. RM: How does this real estate venture extend the Aston Martin brand? KB: Taking residence in an Aston Martin tower is a natural extension of our brand, and it’s something that our clients have been asking about for years. Whether you buy an apartment, or drive one of our speedboats they all embody the Aston Martin’s Art of Living portfolioluxurious products that go beyond our cars and are a lifestyle. RM: Do all of the units feature the same design? KB: G&G Business Developments will provide the kitchen and the bathroom and then buyers can customize the rest of the unit according to their needs. Aston Martin will be more than happy to help the customer to customize their apartment if they want more of the Aston Martin DNA even in their private life. 300 Biscayne Blvd Way, Miami astonmartinresidences.com

MELANIE GOLDBERGER Los Angeles Power Broker
By Zoe Benjamin
L
os Angeles native and real estate extraordinaire Melanie Goldberger has lived no ordinary life. Coming from a successful 20-year career in advertising sales in New York City, Goldberger has found herself as an even more successful real estate broker who has a deep understanding of what New Yorkers are looking for. How exactly has she managed to accomplish so much in two completely different professions? It all has to do with highlighting your best assets and evolving in a way that cultivates success. What is it about your approach that makes New Yorkers gravitate towards you? I tend to always gravitate towards New Yorkers; I know how they think, so I can reference items
58 | resident.com
that they would appreciate. I believe my fast pace, humor and familiarity with what they go through after living in New York and coming to LA connects us. I have some clients that still live in New York and I’ve taken on the whole process for them; in a lot of ways, it’s helped me become a better agent. It’s easy for clients that work with me to be bi-coastal and live in both New York and LA. They’re very thankful for my assistance and I become friends with all of these people.
against multiple counter offers, especially the first-time home buyer market, which is extremely competitive. One of the things I do is give them a lay of the land of such a competitive market; all financials and other materials need to be ready to go. It’s important to get acquainted with the property’s listing agent and give them as much information about my client as possible. You have to be strategic and make sure your client is educated on the housing market.
What is your method when approaching clients? My husband always says, “I think you care too much.” We purchased our home in East Hampton, and then purchased our home out here; I can empathize with them in going through the process, especially in LA’s competitive market. We are up
What kind of trends do you currently see in Los Angeles, and where do you see value? We’re seeing a lot of the money that used to go to the New York market. There’s more foreign money coming in with overseas clients that are

moving to LA for investment purposes, but also for quality of life. I have clients that have townhouses in Manhattan and a house in the Hamptons, and would like to have a place overlooking the ocean when they visit LA. Instead of going to Florida, we’re seeing clients look into Los Angeles for their third or fourth home. Some of the walk-in closets in LA are the size of NYC’s apartments; I can totally relate to that after living in New York. Where are some of the areas that people are buying up in Los Angeles? Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, the Palisades — those areas are saturated. You get a lot more for your money out in the Valley and Encino than you do in the city. Also, places like Santa Monica, Marina Del Ray and Playa Vista are being snatched up by millennials and businesses like Snapchat. Venice Beach has been very popular as well. Every client that I have looking into buying in those areas is up against 5-10 other offers. Which are your favorite areas? I grew up in Encino and my husband is from Tarzana; we moved back to Pacific Palisades, from New York City when my son was one year old. Because I grew up here and have so many friends, family and a large network, I’m found in the Valley, the West Side, Beverly Hills, Brentwood — I’m pretty much everywhere!
Do you feel like the West Side of Beverly Hills will always have its cache, or do you see a lull in that market now? No, it will always have that cache. It’s sophisticated — nice restaurants, the weather is cooler in the summer with ocean breezes — I don’t see it losing its cache. It’s still really competitive and they’re starting a lot of building ordinances that, in the last six months or so, have placed restrictions on how much can be built according to lot sizes in the area. The developers are having to go places where they can buy bigger houses on smaller lots. Basements are a new trend; people add in things like wine cellars and in-home gyms. The basements usually allow around 2,000 square feet below, and 4,000-5,000 square feet above. What do you think makes you stand apart as a real estate broker? I think I’m honest. Some brokers tend to be in a position where they’re more panicked, and I’m in a good situation where I’m able to take my time and really make sure that the right decision is being made for my clients. Home buying is one of the biggest purchases one makes in his or her life, and with that, comes a lot of emotions. I have to be a good listener and adapt to my clients’ needs. Respect for other agents in the business is also important, as agents work closely together to generate leads.
What do you currently see is in the most demand for your clients? On the buyer’s side, it’s the off-market deals. Once these properties hit the market, you’re competing against so many buyers. Most of my clients are looking for a premium to get a property off market initially before it even hits, instead of waiting for it to get on the market and have to go through a bidding war. What do you see as some of your biggest challenges? The biggest challenge would be not having enough inventory in certain price brackets. Right now, it seems like the higher-end market is doing well, and so is the lower-end market. It’s that middle range between $2-3 million — if the house is kind of weathered — that midway point is struggling a little bit. Another challenge is to price the listing correctly, and hope that you get multiple offers. You have to know how to manage your client, and should be educated on marketplace trends in order to be realistic about the pricing you provide for them. The buyers are a lot more sophisticated than they ever were because of sites like Zillow and Trulia. At the end of the day, it’s their house; you don’t want to make buyers feel uncomfortable in any way, but you’re the expert. You’re there to educate and guide them and help them through the process as quickly as possible. The Agency RE Melanie Goldberger 424-400-5926 | mgoldberger@theagencyre.com

ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG’S PARADISE Captiva Island
By Haiting Tan Photography by Peter Roskovensky
A
re you ready to wake each day in paradise? Located in Southwest Florida off the Gulf of Mexico, Captiva Island will leave you in awe at the island’s stunning sea views, nature trails and gleaming sunsets. Developing from a small fishing community, the island is now a tourist attraction. The island offers wondrous activities such as sunbathing, boating, fishing, shelling and if you’re fortunate enough, swimming with dolphins. Captiva Island has also become the inspirational shelter to many in the field of creative arts: Anne Morrow Lindbergh wrote her best-selling A Gift From the Seas during her stay on the island. Robert Rauschenberg, cited as a forerunner of American Pop Art, was a resident of the islands before his passing in 2008. The artist’s work was deemed contemporaneous with Andy Warhol, has been seen throughout the world. Rauschenberg’s home on Captiva was designed by his partner and assistant, Darryl Pottorf. “When he arrived in Captiva, he was surrounded by a swarm of butterflies. That’s what brought him to purchasing properties on the island,” said Mark Pace, Pottorf’s assistant said. His designs were acclimated towards Bob’s taste and he created a setting that could accommodate his art and lifestyle. “With the erosion of his beach house and Florida’s zoning laws, Bob decided to build a new house,” said Pace. As an enthusiast for pop culture, Rauschenberg embraced materials traditionally outside of an artist’s reach. Rauschenberg often covered a canvas with house paint, or ink the wheel of a car and run it over a paper to create a drawing. In the 1950s, he changed the world of art by introducing “combines” and solidified his place in art history. “As he gained more notoriety as an artist, he continued to purchase properties all over the island, leaving the Rauschenberg foundation with a little over 20 acres.” The idea of combining and
56 | resident.com
of noticing combinations of objects and images has remained the core of the famed artist’s work. “Bob truly loved Darryl. Darryl was one of the few artists who had major collaborations with Robert,” said Pace. Therefore; when the house was transferred to Darryl, his decision of selling the home did not come easy. “I’ve never known two people that were so in sync with each other. They had a great appreciation for the world and both loved learning about other cultures.” The home inspired by the beautiful surroundings provides a relaxing and tranquil atmosphere. Be prepared to take in the breathtaking view of the Gulf of Mexico from every angle, walk up the beautiful Brazilian wood staircase, and dance on the polished Corian floors throughout the
home. Equipped with a private elevator, gourmet kitchen, and featuring two master suites and private balconies, this home is everyone’s dream house. Pace said “Bob loved the island. He loved life, he kept going until the end.” Darryl hopes that the new owners will have the same passion for life and love for the island. Believing that “art can change the world,” the Rauschenberg Foundation has established an Artist in Residency program. The foundation hopes to continue to spread Rauschenberg’s legacy throughout the island and onto the world. Karen Bell | VIP Realty Group, Inc. The Bell Team | 239-851-0168 thebellteam.com

DINING OUT SPOTLIGHT ON HELL’S KITCHEN By CORRINE O’CONNOR
W
ith unrivaled access to Manhattan’s stunning sunsets and skyline, Hell’s Kitchen is the go to destination to enjoy the best part of summer island life. Home to some of the hottest rooftop lounges and floating restaurants, here are some of our favorite spots in Hell’s Kitchen to relish the great outdoors and also indulge in fine dining.
HUDSON’S AT PIER 81 northriverfishbar.com Escape the craziness of the city and set sail with Hudson’s at Pier 81 located at W 41st St and 12th Avenue. This 3-story 160 foot long yacht is the newest lounge and rooftop where people can relax and experience the beautiful views of the city while sailing along the Hudson River to The Statue of Liberty. Guests can choose to enjoy a sit down meal or take in the breathtaking views from either the indoor or outdoor bars. The menu is complete with shareable and small plates making it the perfect spot to grab a drink and hangout with friends. Platters including Charcuterie, which includes peppered salami, prosciutto de parma, hot chorizo, soppressata and cornichon as well as gourmet cheese platters pair perfectly with their extensive wine selection. On the other hand the chef also offers a selection of full dining options such as salmon, branzino, steak, chicken or more vegetarian friendly options. One of the more unique entree items is the Roasted Cauliflower that consists of cauliflower puree, pomegranate agro dulce, aleppo pepper and scallions. If you are feeling meatier indulge in the juicy and savory skirt steak, which is accompanied by faro, wild mushrooms, kale and chimichurri. During the summer diners can also opt for the for the weekend brunch sail that offers a myriad of hearty savory and sweet options marking the start of a fabulous weekend on the water.
NORTH RIVER LOBSTER COMPANY northriverlobsterco.com While Hudson’s could be considered as the Southampton Grande Dame, North River Lobster Company would be her younger and sassy Montauk sister. Also docked at Pier 81 on the Hudson River, this evokes the laid back atmosphere of a floating seafood shack. A popular spot to enjoy happy hour with friends, the 7 pm sunset sail travels up the Hudson towards the George Washington Bridge with a DJ setting the stage amidst spectacular views. From May through September bring your friends or family to taste the bounty of summer. The more carnivorous diner can sink their teeth into grilled chicken sandwich or the true American classic, the juicy hamburger. The nautical in you can enjoy a succulent lobster paired with vegetables, potatoes and of course, butter. If you’re feeling even more adventurous try their raw bar complete with chilled lobster, shrimp, clams and oysters. If for some reason you aren’t salivating already just picture the perfectly cooked and seasoned truffle Parmesan fries alongside your savory lobster roll. To experience an even more carefree experience take advantage of the happy hour or the drink list at any time. Serving mason jar cocktails, such as the cleverly named Pop-Sea-Cle, which has brut prosecco, cordial and popsicle and the option of either elderflower, melon, or aperol. Besides a cocktail North River Lobster Co has beer buckets, sangria and a range of wine for any type of buzz.

DINING OUT S By Corrine O’Connor
PERRINE perrinenyc.com The iconic Pierre, A Taj hotel, debuted “Perrine,” their new culinary offering, last year under the supervision of Executive Chef Ashfer Biju. Vegetable-forward dishes take command of this seasonally inspired menu where a side dish such as kale is married with sweet onion, and chilled sweet pea soup blends harmoniously with radishes and mint. For main dishes, the Lamb Chops are a must-try, as is the Black Bass in a seafood broth with fresh fava beans. Chef Biju pays homage to both his upbringing in India’s fishing town of Kerala and his French culinary training with a menu that will delight both the carnivore and vegetarian. His love of seafood is evident with a selection of simple, yet elegant dishes that are both flavorful and fresh. Be sure to leave room for dessert because their Banana Cream Pie will knock your socks off! The restaurant also underwent a soft renovation to feature a brighter setting with open windows and natural light. Looking for the perfect al fresco experience? The restaurant debuted the “Rosé Terrace at Perrine” this past April, where guests can enjoy the spring menu in the outdoors. Also, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of everyone’s favorite Rosé, Whispering Angel, the “Rosé Terrace at Perrine” will play host to a series of events throughout the summer months in partnership with the producer of Whispering Angel, Château d’Esclans. Their weekly Rosé Thursdays Happy Hour from 5pm – 8pm, featuring specially crafted appetizers paired with a glass of Rosé is the perfect way to kick off the impending weekend. – By Lisa Loverro
FOUR CUTS STEAKHOUSE fourcutsny.com Located in Sutton Place Four Cuts Steakhouse has not only phenomenal steakhouse classics, but also an assortment of seafood dishes. The space was designed with the element of a traditional steakhouse, but with a modern and rustic flare to it that was created by C3D Architecture. Executive Chef Joaquin Linares is the creator of the deliciously succulent menu. A popular appetizer that guests should try is the Sizzling Canadian Bacon, which is served by the slice extra thick. If you’re leaning for more of a fishier app order the fried calamari because when is that ever a bad decision? As far as the steaks and chops go you can choose from the following sauces, cherry peppers and onions, Barolo wine, truffle butter, or chef M’s signature. Of course they have other memorable entrees including grilled yellowfin tuna, chicken Milanese, grilled salmon or even a burger. Whatever entrees you decide on make sure to give the steak fries with truffle oil a taste because they’re delicious and fries go well with any type of meal. Okay ladies gather up the gang because ‘ladies night’ is every night and has no time restriction for happy hour. Yes, you read that correctly. Whether it be a Manhattan or New York Sour, sip your favorite cocktail as you gossip about the latest drama all night with your best girls.
ALLORA Alloranyc.com The classic Italian-American restaurant ALLORA is soon to open up their rooftop. This Spring come hangout at ALLORA ALTO and enjoy cocktails, food, art and of course the magnificent scenery. Although dining in Manhattan you’ll feel as if you’ve just traveled to Italy with the delicious Antipasti selection as well as pastas and other Italian cuisine. A crowd favorite to order for an antipasti would be the caprese because there can never be a foul word spoken about mozzarella. All the pasta dishes are absolutely delectable. If you’ve never had Gnocchi now is your chance with their homemade Gnocchi that is covered in basil pesto. For a twist on the classic Chicken Milanese try the Scampi Alla Milanese. Everything you love about the original except with shrimp in a light pink sauce with anchovies and capers. With the weather warming up take this delicious and tasty meal and sit on the patio! Along with the new rooftop opening the other option is to sit with friends or family out on the patio and enjoy your food in the warm summer breeze. BUTCHER BAR Butcherbar.com The Butcher Bar is now open in the lower east side located at 146 Orchard St. As a matter of fact this BBQ Smoke House originated in Astoria as an old school Butcher Shop that evolved into the now tasty restaurant. A huge goal of Butcher Bar is to educate people on healthy eating and sustainable farming. The meats that are served are all locally sourced and 100% grass-fed, raised hormone free and without antibiotics. Besides the upbeat, polite and helpful servers Butcher Bar knows how to serve customers the best meats along with great drinks. The crowd favorite is the “Meat Candy” Beef Burnt Ends, which is meat that is double charred in order to intensify the flavor and make it jaw dropping for any carnivore. Another favorite is The Philly Cheese, which is either smoked brisket or grilled chicken covered in a generous amount of a three-cheese sauce with sautéed onions. For a unique and sweeter side opt for the sweet potato wedges or cornbread with honey butter. The sweet tooth of the group should continue onto dessert and order Grandma’s Apple cake which is baked with granny smith apples and topped with caramel sauce and powdered sugar. Not only is the food selection mouth watering, but also you’ll want to make another trip just to experience the drink menu. With different types of moonshine, whiskey, bourbon, sangria and cocktails there will need to be one trip dedicated to the drink menu. Fear not brunch connoisseurs the menu is complete with sweet and savory options that are served with one drink of your choice whether it be a mimosa, coffee, or soda.

BAGATELLE MIAMI By Haiting Tan
W
ith locations across the globe in New York, Dubai, Sao Paulo, Rio, Punta del Este, St. Barth, St. Tropez, and the just-opened Monte Carlo, Bagatelle Miami Beach just celebrated its 2-year anniversary and is proud to reinforce its place on the Miami culinary scene. Known for its fancy drink presentations, enigmatic music and countless gorgeous faces, the French-Mediterranean restaurant has become a popular dining destination among foodies, celebrities and socialites. The Miami outpost is helmed by Executive Chef Matthieu Godard. Godard studied food in France before embarking on his career at Club Med resorts in France, Spain and Greece. After honing his skills, Godard knocked on the door of Danial Boulud’s DB Bistro Moderne in New York and worked his way up the ranks at Boulud’s signature restaurant for the next eight years. During his stint under Boulud, he was given the opportunity to work at the prestigious Michelin 3-star restaurant, Daniel. From
72 | resident.com
there he made the decision to transfer to South Florida to helm the kitchen at the restaurant’s Miami location, before taking the reigns at Bagatelle in 2015. While Godard admits that “it was difficult to leave New York despite the demanding and intense culinary scene, I wanted a change of scenery which is why I ventured to Miami.” Godard knows that people come to Miami to relax on the beach in the day and party all night, but with the changing culinary scene in Miami and customer’s adeptness to becoming more food educated, he understands the importance of great food. With swimsuit season a year-round affair, Bagatelle has placed their customer’s needs to maintain their svelte figures as a top priority. Launching a spring seasonal menu, Godard hopes to create high quality dishes using brightly colored vegetables. Using light and refreshing fruits such as tomato, oranges, and grapefruits as well as herbs such as thyme and rosemary which are an essential part of the Mediterranean diet, Godard is
aware that customers refrain from heavier options because they want to show off their body. As Bagatelle creates a new menu every season, Godard is grateful that the restaurant allows more flexibility with designing it. “Five or six dishes are staple to Bagatelle’s menu but the remainder are up to the chef to create.” Despite the responsibility of designing a menu, Godard appreciates the creativity and freedom that Bagatelle awards him. For the summer, Godard recommends the pan-roasted Chilean sea bass drizzled with lemon, which has garnered critical praise. Godard says “I don’t want to reinvent the kitchen. I believe that people want simple food. Customers are looking to see if the dishes are well plated, well cooked and well seasoned. Customers just want a real meal.” So if Bagatelle is calling your name, stop by for a not so classic twist on French American food. Bagatellemiami.com

THE FORGE
Brings Cutting-Edge Design to the Legendary Steakhouse
T
he Forge is not your grandfather’s steakhouse—although it once was. With its modern décor, ambiance and philosophy, The Forge has disrupted the steakhouse milieu. The restaurant’s light and whimsical design elements—think lilac chandeliers and a wall of bubbles—are perfectly interspersed with the historical pieces that adorn the space. The Forge’s design history hearkens back to the 1920s in Miami with blacksmith Dino Phillips, who created decorative iron gates and sculptures for wealthy Miami residents out of this space on 41st Street with clients including the Firestones and Vanderbilts. In the ‘30s, Phillips converted his foundry into a high-end restaurant with regulars spanning Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Jackie Gleason and Walter Winchell. In 1968, international financier, Al Malnik bought The Forge and after a yearlong renovation, reopened the restaurant with his collection of fine art and antiques. Some of these significant pieces remain, including a chandelier from the White House (circa James Madison’s presidency) and Napoleon’s writing desk. Celebrity diners from this era included Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and Desi Arnaz. Over the years, The Forge has been updated with more incredible art and an eight-room wine cellar with some of the rarest vintages in the world. In 1991 a fire at the restaurant and damage from Hurricane Andrew served as time where the passing of the torch from Al Malnik to his son, Shareef Malnik. Under Shareef’s tenure, since 1991, The Forge has flourished as a celebrity hotspot once again with iconic guests like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Michael Jordan, Justin Timberlake, Michael Douglas and Billy Joel. However, in 2009 The Forge received its most dramatic makeover yet. Malnik closed the restaurant for one year, as designer Francois Frossard
74 | resident.com
created a completely new look with hand-carved blond wood walls, octopus-like lilac chandeliers, tiered Murano glass chandeliers, bubble walls, hand-etched glass tabletops, and colorful, upholstered furniture. More than cosmetic, the $10 million overhaul also eliminated more than 100 existing seats, established an open-plan main dining room, completely moved and expanded the bar, added the glass-enclosed Boardroom for private dining and livened up The Library and The Forge. When The Forge reopened in 2010, the décor, while different, still managed to pay homage to its past. This striking mix of old and new quickly won over longtime guests, new patrons and restaurant critics. “We wanted The Forge to feel like a home; an elegant, opulent, and intricate home, but still a comfortable home where you can relax and be yourself,” Frossard said of the redesign. “It’s also a good bit brighter in there than it used to be— warmer, fresher, livelier.” Guests enter the historic restaurant and are welcomed by a custom lilac host stand, which complements the twisty chandeliers hanging over the
bar. To the left are the restrooms, of which the women’s accommodations are probably the most photographed in Miami due to a sexy, oversized Helmut Newton nude, ample mirrors and soft lighting. Straight ahead is the open-plan main dining room, with its blond wood walls accented by Arabic-inspired archways, low-slung couches, hand-etched glass tabletops and the signature, multi-tiered chandelier. The modern bar seats up to 30 guests, with the aforementioned lilac chandeliers, 64 wines by the glass, and blond wood and mirrored bar stools. The glass-enclosed private dining room, The Boardroom, features a 22-foot long communal table made of polished Indonesian tree trunks and oversized, white tufted chairs. The Library retains most of the old Forge’s charm, with stained glass, a cozy fireplace and, of course, a curated selection of books. Finally, there’s the labyrinth-like Wine Cellar with rooms devoted to older vintages of wine, champagne and even a secret, luxe private dining room, which seats up to 25 guests. Executive Chef Julia Doyne oversees the culinary aspect of The Forge and will also be celebrating her two year anniversary in August. theforge.com

amed after the merchant road in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, Via Emilia 9 is Miami Beach’s first authentic regional Italian restaurant and market. Perfect for lunch or dinner, Via Emilia 9 has something for all palettes and represents the Italian regions of both Bologna and Modena. Never compromising authenticity, Chef Wendy imports everything served at Via Emilia 9 from Italy (with the exception of fresh fruits, vegetables and eggs), including bread, which is brought in from the Vasalli Bakery in Ferrara, Italy. As Via Emilia 9’s expert “Sfoglina” or pasta maker, Chef Wendy hand rolls a variety of pastas and raviolis daily. Via Emilia 9 recently received a facelift. After two years in business, the traditional Italian eatery underwent renovations to incorporate a new open kitchen plan, an expanded market featuring

homemade and imported Italian goods for sale, an eat-in bar, and pasta making station, along with other additions. Via Emilia 9 owners, Chef Giancarlo “Wendy” Cacciatori and his partner Valentina, decided to open up the space to give diners a look into the daily workings of an authentic Italian kitchen. “We want to involve our guests in the cooking process and not just the end result. Being able to show people the process behind making food and being able to interact with their food is part of Italian tradition,” said Chef Wendy. Via Emilia 9 is known for its signature dish the Tortellini in Brodo (tortellini in broth) that is homemade and hand rolled- the tortellini is stuffed with Prosciutto di Parma, parmesan cheese, mortadella, beef and pork. Other highlights include
The Basket from the Emilia Romagna- a charcuterie board that features prosciutto, mortadella, pancetta, parmiagiano, that includes fried dough, prosciutto, mortadella, stracchino cheese, and marmalades. NEW YORK FOOD TRUCK ASSOCIATION FOUNDER
BEN GOLDBERG By Marie Assante
P
rior to heading up the New York Food Truck Association (NYFTA), Ben Goldberg, originally started as the owner of a Belgian French Fry truck in Manhattan called The Frying Dutchmen. He soon realized his strengths were in marketing rather than running the dayto-day operations of an individual food truck. Through being on a truck and speaking to fellow vendors, he realized they needed continual events to keep their businesses thriving, especially during off-peak seasons. He also found it wasn’t easy for food truck vendors to successfully book events on their own while successfully trying to run their businesses so he set out to create an association to help them. This realization, along with the passion, dedication and love for the events and marketing side of the business brought him to launch the NYFTA in 2016. The New York Food Truck

C
hef Marcus Samuelsson and veteran event marketer Herb Karlitz launched the first Harlem EatUp!, a three-day food festival, with the support of President Bill Clinton and Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2015. This year’s festival attracted even more “foodies” than the previous years. Legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday got a tribute concert at the Apollo Theater to kick off Harlem EatUp! The festival booked The Alvin Ailey Dancers and ten acts including singers Rickie Lee Jones, Lizz Wright and Bettye LaVette who sang Billie’s hits. The Aetna Foundation donated tickets to elderly members of the Harlem community and worked with Citymeals on Wheels to deliver the tickets. The Chew’s Carla Hall, Top Chef’s Dale Talde and Jonathan Waxman were among the chefs who cooked on the festival’s main stage. The festival celebrated the food, culture and spirit of Harlem and payed homage to its roots highlighting the distinct culinary experiences of the community.
Citymeals on Wheels “The Harlem EatUp! Festival is inspired by the vibrancy of the Harlem community and all that it encompasses: music, art, people and of course, food,” said Samuelsson. Over the festivals history Bobby Flay, Emeril Lagasse, and Daniel Boulud have teamed up with chefs from local restaurants. Among the restaurants featured this year were BLVD Bistro, Chaiwali, Harlem Shake, Vinateria, LoLo’s Seafood Shack, Melba’s, Minton’s, Red Rooster and Mountain Bird. This year’s beneficiaries included Citymeals on Wheels, Harlem Park to Park, CITI, Macy’s, and the Clinton Foundation.harlemeatup.com

tertainment marketing firm, which creates unique experiences to build customer loyalty for clients. “We do ski clinics with Lindsey Vonn and golf clinics with Hank Haney, who is Tiger Woods’s former coach,” Karlitz says. “In marketing-speak its r etention,” he explains. Karlitz recently produced a John Legend concert for a client, attended only by their best customers. He’s also an entertainment lawyer who rose through the ranks of the worldwide public relations firm Burson-Marsteller to create and lead its Entertainment & Event Marketing division. There he created concert events for everyone from Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys to Bon Jovi and Stevie Wonder. Karlitz loves food and wine, and 75% of his company’s business is producing culinary events with celebrity chef friends, “I have found a way to make my passions and interests, which are food, wine and cooking, into my business.” His parents owned a restaurant and that’s where he developed a love for all things gastronomic.
The Food Network This passion also led him to regard chefs as pro-
fessionals whose job is to entertain and make people happy, like musicians and actors. Karlitz says that he was working with “celebrity chefs” back when they were just called cooks. “We developed this niche of working with and creating celebrity chefs before they were celebrity chefs,” he says. Karlitz was involved in one of the first-ever food and wine festivals where, he says, nobody knew who Emeril Lagasse was. “He was just starting on the Food Network. And we had about 35 major chefs who were favorites of ours, but nobody really knew, like Charlie Trotter from Chicago, and other now-famous chefs.”
Chef Emeril Lagasse Karlitz feels that a chef becoming famous by appearing on television and commanding huge appearance fees is good for the culinary world. “They’re able to get people interested in cooking and not see it as going back to school, which is what I think Emeril paved the way for. In the past, there was Julia Child, but today there are many personalities thanks to the Food Network.” Said Karlitz. Karlitz.com

ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE
M
y experience began as I walked through the doors and saw a live wall of moss which turned into artwork. I was truly amazed at all of the live plants which hung gracefully from the ceiling that was colored with breathtaking orchids. Everywhere you look there was life surrounding guests of the hotel. Succulent plants in glass bowls adorned the light wood tables in the lobby. I was greeted by a peaceful gentleman named Dilip Mukundan who is the director of Sales & Marketing at this truly amazing hotel. As we started our tour, Dilip started to explain the 1 Hotel’s concept of being ecofriendly to a level I could never have imagined. As we made our way through the lobby, there was a fruit stand offering fresh fruit sourced from local farmers for guests to enjoy. Even the halls were lined by repurposed pine wood that was salvaged from trees that were unfortunately infested by a species of beetles. The color was a gorgeous hue that resulted from a natural chemical reaction from the beetles. Light colored natural fabrics, woods, and stone gave the room an inviting and calm essence. Everything is recycled in the hotel, including the cardboard clothing hangers in the rooms. Want to write a note, you will not find a pad or pen, but instead a small chalkboard with chalk on your bedside table. Even the tap water in the room is drinkable due to a triple-filtration faucet. The room was luxurious and designed for comfort with natural elements including the hemp-blend mattress. After seeing the suite, we visited the Bamford Haybarn Spa where natural elements and wafting soothing aromas created a calming and inviting feel. Adjacent to the spa was a state of the art gym that follows the Spartan concept. Just outside the gym is the amazing plant based restaurant called plnthouse helmed by chef Matthew Kenney. From juicing to smoothies, their dishes are deeply rooted in nature with a nod to the importance of health and fitness. My favorite dish that Dilip recommended for breakfast was the Garbanzo scrambled. The flavors were so palatable as the fresh herbs delighted the taste buds with a slightly spicy kick. The Zen like pool area offers breathtaking views of the ocean and makes you feel like one with nature. According to the CEO, “I wanted to capture the beauty of nature in a hotel, and in doing so commit to

safeguarding it as best I can, a responsibility that I believe we all share. It’s 1 world.” They have planted the seeds to aspire to live an eco-friendlier life and give back to the environment as the same time. I cannot thank Dilip and his team enough for this relaxing and health inspiring return to nature that I experienced at the 1 Hotel. All of the restaurants and amenities were at the highest level and the hanging orchids made me smile every time I walked past them. It’s amazing how the hotel has kept true to this concept and created this spectacular eco-friendly getaway in the heart of South Beach. This is one not to miss!

repare for a culinary experience that is on a whole new level. Fi’lia and Bazaar Mar are the two culinary concepts at the SLS Brickell Hotel and Residences.
July afternoon. A focused wine list appeals to the knowledgeable diner of Brickell, celebrating Italian regional varietals and American wines with an old world sensibility.
Guests can expect an airy décor, unadorned simplicity, with a focus on clean lines and unobtrusive, sleek teak furniture, and a room framed by vertically stacked citrus planters at Fi’lia. Schwartz ‘s first Italian restaurant reflects a simple and straightforward approach, which echoes in his honest Italian food and refreshingly uncomplicated beverages.
Bazaar Mar is the new seafood-focused restaurant created by chef José Andrés, his second outpost in Miami. Focusing on the sea, Andrés transports his guests on a culinary journey through a vibrant menu celebrating the bounty of oceans, with a seasonal emphasis on Miami and the Caribbean.
Rustic pizzas from the wood oven showcase beautiful fresh produce in special combinations. A crusty loaf is presented with olive oil and oregano, snipped at the table to delight your eyes. A classic Caesar salad is tossed tableside in a shower of shaved parmigiano from a roaming cart, with the smell of toasted garlic croutons whiffing past your nose. To complement your dish, the cocktails are less about complex recipes and technique, and more about how perfect a spritz can be on a

‘Sea Little Snacks’ such as Croquetas de bacalao (codfish croquettes), visually tantalizing sashimi cone starters, that have become a Bazaar classic and a selection of zesty ceviches, a raw and simple bar, featuring Spiny Lobster and Florida’s own stone Crabs are among the many highlights on the menu. The Big Guys from the Sea section offers whole fish prepared in a number of ways, including grilled with a whisper of smokiness from the Josper grille, which also doubles as the centre-
piece of the restaurant. Dishes inspired by Spain pay respects to José’s true native country, with some items including Gambas al Ajillo (sautéed shrimp) and Puntillitas Fritas (baby squid and piparra peppers), which are fried like they are in southern Spain. For those who are more audacious, the Adventurous Eater section, focuses on dishes made from the discarded and underutilized parts of the fish. Some dishes include Callos de Mar (codfish blood sausages) and Ankimo (seared monkfish liver). If the sounds of ‘the offal of seafood’ don’t satisfy your delight, José offers creations presented in a dramatic style, which are a must see. An artfully plated Key Lime Pie served in a sand castle made out of graham crackers is just one of the many extravagant dishes served at Bazaar Mar. Elements of the sea encompass the dishes, transferring the delectable and exorbitant essences from the plate to the tastebuds. Sbe.com

Resident Magazine also had the chance to chat with renowned chef and entrepreneur Nobu Matsuhisa about the Nobu Hotel at the Nobu Eden Roc and his new projects on the horizon. RM: How did you start the concept of the Nobu Hotel? NM: The hotel idea came from De Niro. We started with The Greenwich Hotel. We had a lot of offers to open a restaurant in hotels, so Bob suggested why don’t we open your own hotel. We built the teams who negotiated projects all over the world. So now we have Las Vegas, Miami, Manila and four of five more on the way. RM: How do you choose your hotel partners? NM: Well, the most important aspect for me is that they understand our philosophy. If we will open our own restaurants I want to make sure I oversee all the details and they have the passion and trust us. RM: The location that you choose and the cities? NM: I like big cities like London, LA, New York, and Miami. Hotels attract different generations, cultures, and seasonal visitors. So we can build all over the world, we have Montenegro, Bodrum, Cabo San Lucas, Toronto, Chicago and other destinations on the way. It’s a busy 2 years. We have 32 locations already. I like the hotspots. Finding the location and building the restaurant and interior is the easy part, the difficult task is getting the people to manage it. RM: Tell me more about the new Nobu in NYC? NM: After 22 years in the Tribeca location we were offered the space at 195 Broadway. It’s a historical landmarked space in the old AT&T building. Because it’s a landmark we can’t really touch it but David Rockwell designed it and it’s twice the space and we have a large bar lounge. The menu is upgraded but we still have our signature dishes. RM: Did you ever think your first name would be this well-known? NM: People who are only recognized by their first names are Cher, Madonna and Nobu!

RM: What do you love most about Miami? NM: I used to live in South America in Peru. When I come here I feel the same culture here too- a lot of people are speaking Spanish and I love the beach. I love the change of weather between Miami and New York. RM: You have so many different markets. So many different cities. NM: I can’t do everything at once, but we can go after them one by one.

South Beach’s Artistic Haven
THE BETSY-SOUTH BEACH
By Nina Kullmann
T
he Betsy-South Beach is a beach-side haven featuring timeless luxury and incredible ocean views in the middle of Miami’s South Beach. Exquisite amenities, world-class cuisine and a commitment to the arts have placed The Betsy on the 2017 Condé Nast Traveler Gold List, as one of the top hotels in the world. Miami Beach’s most anticipated luxury hotel project, The Betsy-South Beach, unveiled its expansion in December 2016 following a two-year transformation. Merging with the former, historic Carlton Hotel on Collins Avenue to debut an “Art Deco” wing addition, the completed hotel features 130 guestrooms, two restaurants by awardwinning Chef Laurent Tourondel, an expansive rooftop pool complex, dedicated library, and nearly 15,000 square feet of special event space, among many other exceptional guest amenities. The addition comes as the original Betsy Ross Hotel begins a yearlong celebration of its 75th anniversary on Ocean Drive in 2017. “As with the original Betsy, where the building itself dictated the design, with the Art Deco wing, we also embraced the history of the original Carlton building and South Beach neighborhood to influence our approach,” said Pedersoli. “The biggest difference is the style of the buildings,” added Santoro. “With the extension, we let the natural heritage flow freely and complemented the style

with touches that resonate with the original wing for consistency.”
bar that features live music every Wednesday and Thursday evening from 8 – 11 pm.
With that said, the chic rooms reflect a beach house aesthetic with the grace of yesteryear mixed with a contemporary flair. Plantation-style shutters filter the warm Florida sunshine, which beautifully blends with the dark walnut wood floors, rich custom cabinetry and unique raffia accents. Original artwork, in-room libraries and bookmarks embossed with poetic verses are charming and homey touches. Bathrooms are luxuriously outfitted with herringbone designed Thasso marble and bedecked with large mirrors. The Betsy boasts many exquisite amenities. For absolute relaxation visit the wellness garden & spa or take a beachside yoga class. Feel the white sand under your toes and take a dip in the beach directly facing the hotel. Or cool off in one of the beautifully landscaped pools by the courtyard or rooftop. Rejuvenate the senses with a good workout in at the 24-hour fitness center. Award winning Chef Laurent Tourondel’s, namesake LT Steak & Seafood is a delicious option to enjoy contemporary American cuisine with seasonallyinspired dishes that mirror a deep appreciation for the local landscape.
The newest addition to arrive at the Betsy will be Poeti – an Italian trattoria-style restaurant that will open later in 2017. It’s signature dishes will offer elevated pizzas with unique toppings inspired by the local landscape. There will also be an alley-accessed “Grab and Go” window – an extension of Chef Tourondel’s restaurants – for takeaway treats like fresh gelatos and crêpes.
The Conservatory is a sophisticated lounge to relax and enjoy tea time or coffee by day and bespoke cocktails by night. Or relax in the lobby
A unique feature of the hotel is the Writer’s Room- which is a working studio space for visiting writers and the only one of its kind in Miami. According to The Betsy it is meant to “link past and present through the arts – paying homage to the many ‘writing rooms’ that existed in prewar hotels where guests recorded memories and linked to home.” Since The Writer’s Room opened in 2012, more than 500 working writers (and other artists) have stayed at The Betsy and engaged in community service programs. With its prime location in the heart of South Beach, the luxuriously chic accommodations and its patronage to the arts, the Betsy offers a unique experience that makes for an unforgettable getaway. www.thebetsyhotel.com

ummer is here and the Hamptons are in full swing! The questions we keep hearing are what’s new, what’s hot and what’s not to be missed. Over in Bridgehampton at popular French bistro Almond (almondrestaurant.com), Executive Chef Jason Weiner has welcomed Chef de Cuisine Jeremy Blutstein. Blutstein brings a passion, like Weiner’s, for local bounty and promises to take Almond up a notch this summer. In Montauk, there’s a new chief in the kitchen at Montauk Yacht Club, Richard Hebson. Now known as Coast Kitchen (montaukyachtclub.com/food-drink/gulf-coast-kitchen), Hebson has rolled out a new menu with locallyinspired dishes such as Montauk Cioppino. Over at Arbor (arbormontauk.com) in Montauk, a new outdoor dining area with a bar and lounge has welcomed the summer. The bar program will be headed up by Manhattan’s cocktail brand, The
Garret. Look for fun craft creations such as Refinery 63 with Singani 63, mezcal, passionfruit, fermented pineapple, and lime juice. If sunsets are your thing, we’ve got you covered. There are several prime viewing options throughout the Hamptons. Starting in Montauk there’s the hottest beachfront restaurant, Navy Beach (navybeach.com). Celebrating their eighth season, Navy Beach has added new dishes and cocktails to the menu including Soba noodles with clams, mussels, shrimp, calamari, daikon, bok choy and mushroom dashi and on the libation front a few “Pitcher Perfect” cocktails such as the Pomelo with silver tequila, grapefruit soda and lime. A hidden gem in East Hampton for sunset viewing is Harbor Bistro (harborbistro. net), offering signature dishes such as the crispy kataifi-lobster bundle and the lime grilled local

Top spots to catch a great view and great meal are The Beacon (beaconsagharbor.com), known for its halibut baked in parchment with sundried tomatoes, tatsoi and toasted Israeli couscous, and The Bell & Anchor (bellandanchor.com), serving P.B. & O., pork belly, local oysters and kimchi. Looking for a spot to host your own party with a view? Consider The Boathouse Shelter Island (islandboatyard.com/shelterisland-weddings-events). The recently renovated 4,000 square foot space features over 200 feet of waterfront overlooking West Neck Harbor offering incredible sunset views. Situated on 18 acres of land on picturesque Shelter Island, The Boathouse includes an additional five acres of outdoor event space, perfect for any size occasion. A few more hot spots for dining this summer include Mercado Mexican Grill and Tequila Bar (mercadony.com) located right on Route 27 just before the Bridgehampton Commons. This unassuming restaurant is serving up authentic Mexican cuisine, that is arguably the best around. Consider sashimi tuna tostadas, the carne asada, or any of the Mexican street tacos. Just outside of the East Hampton Village is Fresno (fresnorestaurant. com). With a relaxed, neighborhood vibe, you’ll enjoy regional, contemporary fare such as the charred Spanish octopus with roasted garlic white bean puree, pickled fennel, castelvetrano olives and caper vinaigrette. On the Napeague Stretch, east of Amagansett and west of Montauk, you’ll stumble upon The Clam Bar (clambarhamptons. com). This Hamptons institution is your go-to place for a lobster roll – made simple, fresh and delicious, it’s what you’ll dream of all summer long. Looking for a luxurious place to lay your head? Book a room at the fabulous Baker House 1650 (bakerhouse1650.com). This historic and well-appointed inn is located in the village of East Hampton, walking distance from the beach and Main Street. The James Beard House Chefs and Champagne tasting event (jamesbeard.org/events/chefsandchampagne) at Wolffer Estate features top chefs from Manhattan and the Hamptons on July 29. On August 11 at Dopo La Spiagga in East Hampton, the third annual Trunks of Love (vetsinternational. org/events) benefit will be held to support Veterinarians International, a non-profit organization with a mission to enhance the health of humans, animals, and the environment through the use of sound veterinary care and expertise. Staying on trend, there’s a new food truck in town! OPA on the Go! QUINTESSENTIAL CAPE COD Wequassett Resort and Golf Club

A
s summer swiftly approaches, Cape Cod is the perfect destination for a tranquil getaway. The Cape’s picturesque coastline dotted with enchanting villages, lighthouses, and spectacular ocean beaches from which to enjoy the cool Atlantic breeze, set the stage for a laid-back and authentic New England experience. Sitting on the elbow of the Cape, one such seaside town, Harwich, offers miles of unspoiled shorelines with countless coves and inlets. Here, the Wequassett Resort and Golf Club serenely rests on 27 acres of beaches, salt marshes, and woodlands. The perfect fusion of luxury and Cape Cod charm, the Wequassett is a resplendent hideaway with breathtaking views of Pleasant Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Wequassett, meaning “crescent on the water,” commemorates its rich history and discovery a few hundred years ago by Wampanoag Indians, and continues to emanate a feel of oneness with nature and reverence for the area’s natural beauty. Today, this waterfront retreat is comprised of 22 historic buildings, including the heart of the resort which is a classic 18th-century colonial house, surrounded by clusters of tidy clapboard cottages. The spacious rooms are luxuriously appointed, with nautically inspired country décor, oversized windows and warm welcoming hues that immediately make you feel right at home. Choose a luxurious and lavish suite from the premiere Signature Collection, or opt for a more cozy Cottage Style room. Regardless, all 120 rooms feature
spectacular views of either the beautifully landscaped, picture-perfect gardens, or magnificent ocean and bay views. Some rooms feature private decks and verandas with individual fire pits and loungers from which to take in the fresh salty air, along with comfortable sitting areas complete with a fireplace. The Molton Brown bath products, plush terry robes and linens, along with modern comforts ensure an enjoyable stay while taking in the timeless New England style. After lounging in the suites and cottages, stroll along the meandering brick pathways, and make your way to Thoreau’s an old world styled pub or The Outer Bar & Grille, a casual poolside restaurant offering a spectacular setting for a pre-dinner cocktail or classic New England Clam Bake. Be sure to reserve a table at the elegant Twenty-Eight Atlantic, Wequassett’s signature restaurant that specializes in locally caught seafood delicacies. Complete your evening by the large fire pit, a popular gathering area at night, from where you can recount the day’s memorable activities. With four Har-Tru tennis courts, two pools, two beaches, golf, bike trails, and watersports, activities abound at the Wequassett. Laze in one of the luxurious and oversized private pool cabanas and enjoy the vistas, or take a boat shuttle to Cape Cod’s National Seashore and enjoy a beachside picnic on the Outer Beaches.

ROYAL SONESTA BOSTON By Frank Debonair
A
s creatures of habit, we tend to get comfortable revisiting the places we know. In other words, we stop being adventurous. But memories can be enlivened again if infused with a sense of surprise. A last-minute trip to Boston, this past January, forced my family and I to relocate from our traditional Back Bay hotel district to a different part of town. The kids were not too thrilled to be away from the trendy and crowded Newbury and Boylston areas. We found a room at the Royal Sonesta Boston, just across the Charles River, between the Longfellow Bridge and the Charles River Dam, which means in Cambridge. But the mood settled quickly when the family realized that the hotel’s proximity to downtown was only a bridge crossing away. Longfellow Bridge leads straight to the entrance of one of the most charming districts in Boston, Charles Street in Beacon Hill and steps to Boston

Common. The new location turned into a source of genuine excitement. Our first impression from the high-perched spacious room was one of quietness. An inviting change from the constant bustling of downtown, with its endless flow of noisy traffic and pedestrians. My wife sampled the mattress at once and gave a big thumbs up. One of those non-negotiables for her. Our windows gave onto a very still Charles River. Even if Boston is a familiar haunt, I’ll bet you’ve never seen the captivating Charles River when viewed from the North. Especially at night, with the millions of lights reflecting in its water, redefining Boston’s skyline. A mesmerizing experience indeed. We got in late at the hotel after a long drive from New York on a Friday night. The kids were tired,
so we agreed to eat at the hotel restaurant. Set right off the retro-futuristic lobby, “Dante” has all the charm of a Mediterranean setting, including a large patio looking straight at the Charles, which I assume must the in-place to lounge and be seen during the Summer months. “Dante” offered an eclectic menu of traditional and modern Italian dishes, including a large selection of vegetarian and gluten-free fares. Being a modern family, everyone with their special requests, amazingly, we did not have to compromise our choices. Each one of us found something to suit their palate. I recommend starting with the high-note Sicilian oregano classic bruschetta . . . which was the best door-opener for successive dishes. The name of the game is indulgence, which I did with the spicy grilled octopus in olive oil. For main course, the grilled swordfish cooked on a bed of roasted

city hotels, this one is large, sun-drenched and a perfect place to watch the runners go by and stare out at the city while the kids splash about.
mushrooms and sweet shallots was a home run. My wife selected the roasted citrus chicken with the roasted vegetables, and finished her plate. Something very unusual for her. Even if the dishes opened wide our appetite past regular mealtime, they were only half the story. The surprise came via the wine list. Though admittedly, not the most appreciative of Italian wines, I was sold. Among other delicious choices, the menu offered a surprising Barbera d’Alba and Nebbiolo Langhe, by the glass, earthy and with costume-made bodies for our meal. Only one word can apply to “Dante,” simply divine.
The following morning, my wife took advantage of the hotel’s brilliant location, while I took the children to the hotel’s pool. As pointed out by the friendly and helpful reception staff, if you are a runner, the Boston-Cambridge bridge connection makes for a unique running loop. You can run from one embankment to the next without interruption, and without worrying about traffic. Walking out the Sonesta from the riverside, you literally step on to the “track,” an outdoor feature of the hotel that might elude a majority of tourists. Boston is actually an outdoor city. The contingent of runners on the both sides of the Charles was impressive. As for the pool, unlike those of many
Steps from the hotel, a two-minute walk away, stands the austere-looking Science Museum. Austere only in appearance since the mood shifts as soon as you enter the multi-floor building. Beyond all the activities and interactive experiments, my favorite being to learn about the curvature of my feet and the quickness with which my hands get cold, we visited the special exhibit on Leonardo da Vinci. A major retrospective with dozens of replicas of his most memorable creations: the helicopter, the catapult, the submachine gun, and of course the cranes. One corner of the exhibit was dedicated to the world’s most famous painting, the “Mona Lisa,” with an infrared breakdown exposing multiple layers, the improvements, the alterations and corrections da Vinci made over time. Well worth the visit, even for simple curiosity’s sake. For those looking for less contemplative exercises, no less than four ice-skating rinks are within a ten-minute walk. Or if shopping is your thing, the CambridgeSide Galleria is located across from the main road of the hotel’s entrance. Overall, the Royal Sonesta Boston is a unique place offering the best of indoor comfort along with access to top outdoor activities, at an enormously attractive value.

The suit is accessed through a versatile anteroom, which can be specified as an office, private TV room, and reading room or to suit personal requirements of the owner. In addition, the walk-in wardrobes are a necessity for glamorous nights in tony seaside resorts. Soak up the rays on the palatial upper sun deck with an extensive bar, plush seating and huge Jacuzzi/pool, which serves as the hub for outdoor summer entertaining. A great part of summer is the food you have been longing for all winter and patiently waiting as spring sprung by. A fresh seasonal fruit platter is perfect to tie you over until you can dive into some fresh seafood, with salads, and perhaps a glass of wine or two. The enormous professional galley was specifically designed by a professional chef and is equipped with two catering-size fridge freezers, a hot and
cold chef’s pass and a huge pantry for all your on board culinary needs. To ensure swift and easy serving, there is a dumbwaiter, which runs from the main deck to both the upper deck and sun deck above, perfect convenience, so you don’t have to leave your oh so comfortable lounge chair. For the more mechanically aware, the wheelhouse is equally impressive with a vast ‘glass bridge’ incorporating the control and monitoring system in a stunning console and the captain’s cabin is also situated here adjourning the helm. She is expected to propel to speeds of up to 22 knots, originating from a pair of MTU 12V diesels. A FRAMILY TRIP TO By Dana Goodman
PUERTO RICO
I
n NYC when you are single in your 20’s, 30’s and 40’s you pretty much escape the city on the weekends in the summer and go out to Fire Island, the Hamptons or the Jersey Shore. Throughout these summer weekends you become very close with friends that you plan every summer house together and these friends are no longer just friends, they are Framily (friends that are family). When summer ends and our tans begin to fade, it’s time to plan our next framily trip. The tricky part is planning where and when to go, and then all of the questions start… • How many days of work can you take off? • Can we say at a hotel on the beach? • Can we go somewhere without a passport?

• Can we stay at a luxury hotel and be spoiled? • Can we find a hotel that has everything on site that includes restaurants, bars and a spa? After taking everything into consideration we finally settled on going to Puerto Rico. Six of us decided to go for five nights in November. Our next decision was finding the perfect hotel. We researched and read reviews and agreed that the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel was the outstanding luxurious resort that we wanted for our framily trip. The trip started out perfectly with a glass of champagne before takeoff in the sky club then on to the plane for some more cocktails. We landed in San Juan after a quick flight in the new designed airport that was easy to navigate and grabbed a taxi.
As soon as we arrived at the fabulous oceanfront hotel and walked into the magnificent lobby we knew we had made the right decision. We were welcomed to the hotel and given a glass of champagne to start off our vacation. The super friendly staff made checking into the hotel fast and easy. Within minutes the bellman escorted us to our room on the first floor, which was super spacious, luxurious and conveniently located to all. Since we arrived late at night on a Thursday night we decided to stay at the hotel and grab a quick bite and cocktails before bed. We checked out the dining options and we decided to meet at Tacos and Tequila inside of the hotel. As soon as we walked into the restaurant we knew we picked the perfect place for our first dining experience in Puerto Rico. We sat outside which was well lit

and had the Atlantic Ocean behind us. We soon discovered our favorite drink of the week - the cucumber margarita, which was super light and refreshing. The Condado Vanderbilt Hotel was an amazing hotel. It was originally built in 1919 and is now completely refurbished. The unique grandeur and historic elegance remain, now with all the modern amenities that make this hotel fabulous. We enjoyed relaxing massages at the beautiful spa which had impeccable world class service and tanning at the pool.
Spa Hammam
Each day we faced only a few decisions that had to be made; which were sitting by the pool or beach, what to drink, when to nap, when to go to the spa and should we move dinner to a later time. The nights were super easy since we made all our reservations for dinner before we got on site. After dinner was pretty much going to the casino next door at La Concha and switching off between playing craps, blackjack and slots or going late night swimming at the hotel since the pool is open for 24 hours and the hotel has security all over making us feel super safe. One of the easiest decisions we had was we all agreed on doing the live music bottomless Sunday brunch, we sat at

the table for hours and loved the day Condado is the best part of San Juan in my opinion, showing off the best that the island has to offer. The Condado is super safe and walkable, lots of restaurants, bars, luxury shopping, hotels and casinos. Our stay at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel was a great first framily trip. We all can’t wait to return to the hotel next year.

FOXES REVISITED & BANDSTAND DEBUT By Kristen Oliveri

THE LITTLE FOXES
A
ctresses Cynthia Nixon and Laura Linney have turned the production of Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes on its head in this new adaptation directed by Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan. Given that the two veteran actresses are powerhouses in their own right, they decided to split the lead role of Regina and supporting role of Birdie. Each night, the women take to the stage at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre to alternate playing each role. All the while, the rest of the ensemble cast— including Darren Goldstein, Michael McKean, Richard Thomas, David Alford, Michael Benz, Francesca Carpanini, Caroline Stefanie Clay, and Charles Turner—are constantly kept on guard, reacting to different nuances in their singular performances. This powerful play itself, considered a dramatic classic in its own right, tackles the evergreen topics of greed, ambition and jealousy. Based in 1900s Alabama, the character of Regina Giddens portrays the head of her family clan, working in cahoots with her selfish brothers to coerce her dying husband to go in on a business deal of a lifetime. By having both Linney and Nixon switch roles, both actresses have the chance to take center stage in a powerful role such as Regina, but also allows each to explore the more subtle nuances of a quieter, gentler role such as Birdie, though while small, is utterly crucial to the development of the plot line of Little Foxes.

BANDSTAND
B
roadway was in need of a big-band type of musical in recent years and the new production of Bandstand is ready to fill the void. This entertaining presentation, directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Andy Blankenbuehler with music by Richard Oberacker, stars Laura Osnes, Coret Cott and Beth Leavel, who tell the story of a group of World War II veterans who join together to form a the Donny Nova band. The ensemble, which also acquires a lead singer (played by Osnes) whose husband died in the war, sets out to create a song from a national radio contest to find America’s next big Swing band. The musical really hits its stride when the band begins to gel and we hear the struggles of WWII veterans reverberate through song. One of the breathtaking aspects of this production is the choreography that tells a unique story through dance. The ensemble has moments of pure joy when they celebrate the big band era and the fantastic musicality of swing, but they also portray sadness and loss in more poignant dance numbers where death and anguish is accurately depicted through dance. The plotline tugs at our heartstrings, and for any of us who have experienced any type of war and loss, it helps us celebrate the true resiliency of the American spirit.

FROM REAL LIFE TO BROADWAY Six Degrees of Separation, Come from Away, The Glass Menagerie and Sweat By Barry Bassis

ome of the season’s best plays have a basis in reality.
John Guare’s 1990 play “Six Degrees of Separation” is based on a con man named David Hampton, who duped some prominent New Yorkers. The tragi-comedy is currently being revived with style at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
locals and a number of the travelers, who returned on 9/11/11 for the 10th anniversary celebration. The whole cast is terrific but the standout is Jenn Colella as a pioneering airline pilot. “The Glass Menagerie” (at the Belasco Theater) is Tennessee Williams’ haunting 1944 memory play about his mother and sister and his eventual abandonment of them.
In “Six Degrees,” Paul (a young African-American) shows up in the upper east side apartment of Flan and Ouisa. He claims to be the son of Sidney Poitier and a college friend of their children. Paul knows many details about their lives, including their Kandinsky painting, and oozes charm. They invite him to stay the night but realize something is wrong when they wake up to discover that he has brought a male prostitute into their home. They throw him out but he continues his scam with others until he is arrested. Guare is at his wittiest and has a lot to say about class, race, economic inequality and identity. Trip Cullman’s production has a top flight cast, with the tart-tongued Allison Janney as Ouisa, John Benjamin Hickey as her art dealer husband and Corey Hawkins, who is memorable as Paul. The surprise musical hit of the season is “Come From Away” (at the Schoenfeld Theater). Gander is a small town with an airport in Northeast Canada, where 38 planes were forced to land on 9/11 after air traffic was halted as a result of the terrorist attacks. The townspeople opened their homes and their hearts to the 1,700 travelers. The 12 cast members, under the skillful direction of Christopher Ashley, play multiple roles, including passengers, crews and Gander inhabitants. The script and songs were written by the husband and wife team of Irene Sankoff and David Hein. They had conducted interviews with the Gander

Director Sam Gold takes a stripped down approach, so that there is basically no set other than a table and chairs. Sally Field is immensely moving as the mother Amanda Wingfield, who was once the belle of the ball but chose the wrong man. Joe Mantello is older than actors who generally play Tom (the stand-in for the playwright), Madison Ferris is Tom’s reclusive sister Laura and Finn Wittrock is the gentleman caller. Ferris is more severely handicapped than Williams envisioned for Laura—she is the first actress in a wheelchair to play a leading role on Broadway—but there is no question that the actress is heartbreaking in the role. Lynn Nottage’s “Sweat” is the winner of this year’s Pulitzer Prize for best play. The work (at Studio 54) is the result of interviews conducted by the playwright and her director Kate Whoriskey with the residents of Reading, Pennsylvania. The city had been a center of industry in the early 20th century but became America’s poorest city in the last decade. The play starts in 2008 with two men attempting to make the transition from prison life to the outside world. The action then goes back to 2000, when they and their mothers work in a factory. They endure salary cuts and downsizing, leading to strikes and lockouts and the taking of their jobs by immigrants, culminating in a violent reaction. The ensemble cast, headed by Joanna Day, Michelle Wilson and Alison Wright (Martha on “The Americans”), is excellent under Whoriskey’s direction. The play implicitly shows why Donald Trump was able to appeal to these voters.

BOOKS du JOUR JUNE 2017 I By Frederic Colier General@bookcasetv.com
f you have been listening to the radio, watching TV or even catching glimpses of the news on the internet, you may have noticed that the White House continues to issue a sort of energy over the nation that makes it hard to settle anywhere, and its aura building from crisis to crisis exerts tremendous pressure on our psyche. The man who was going to “Make America Great Again,” does not seem to be able to even just “Make America.” The details of the hows and whats are irrelevant. Conspiracy theories fly. Spies lurk round the corner, and the black limos idle waiting to snatch
their unsuspicious victims, never to be heard again. If it feels like we are living in a novel, then you must ask: does the novel make reality or reality the novel? Find the answer here below.
(Putnam, pp 426, $28.00)
(William Morrow, pp 400, $15.99)
(William Morrow, pp 302, $ 26.99)
(Alfred A. Knopf, pp 256, $ 25.95)
(Blue Rider Press, pp 302, $27.00)
In this age of great distrust, when even the most open-armed neighbor turns out to be a blood-thirsty sleeping cell waiting to enact some extremist cause, suspicion becomes the first natural line of defense, a reflex that culture is internalizing the prevalence of danger. “The Prisoner” will feel like a fresh twist. The setting works in reverse as the choice of story attempts to excoriate layers upon layers of phobia and paranoia. You could even claim that the story has a cleansing effect. John Wells, the main protagonist, is a Muslim convert who goes into hiding in the very epicenter of al Qaeda jihadist world, and so to infiltrate ISIS. Even though this scenario removes the possibility to see the US soil as the battleground for next collision, a major but remains. Life offers no certainty, no matter how many precautionary measures we think we take. In this case, Wells’s infiltration is to investigate an infiltration from within, a prominent CIA mole passing information to the enemy. In the light of the saga taking place within the current White House, the scenario feels, to say the least, prophetic.
A new shipment from Texas transplant, Deborah Crombie, to UK brings another powerful thriller featuring the Scotland Yard detectives Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James. The most interesting aspect of Crombie’s novels, and this one (her 17th) does not fail to hit the high mark, lies in their characterizations. No two thriller-writers write alike, but two schools stand out. One that accentuates plots and actions, while the other emphasizes characterizations and indirectly intimacy. We travel through life with the protagonists, outside of the investigation. We meet their families and evolve within their domestic spheres, their marriage, children and personal problems. Obviously the latter category makes for a different kind of reading and novel experience. Crombie is neither one nor the other, but a perfect balance between the two that few can achieve without falling into the traps of tediousness and formulas.
Though all wars results in the same atrocious outcome, they are hardly similar in their origins. They often start with an incident, a provocation, appearing to be insignificant, but releasing long-repressed emotions, that make take years to burn out. We just celebrated May 8th, which officially marks the end of WWII, and though the conflict has been over for more than 70 years, it still continues to consume us on the intellectual and spiritual levels. We still try to comprehend how the magnitude of atrocities was made possible. We remember the main perpetrators, their names synonymous with locations, whereas all the forgotten heroes and sacrificed populations are collectively remember as the casualties. Even in memory wars and history are unjust.
Here is an author whose fiction cannot be separated from his life, or if you indulge me his novels are based on his life. Once a marine, with an impressive five tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, Ackerman is now a journalist based in Istanbul, from where he has been covering the Syrian Civil War since 2013. “Dark at the Crossing” Ackerman’s sophomore novel, after his much-heralded debut novel, “Green on Blue,” like its predecessor, deals with characters trapped in the middle of a brutal conflict. The conflict here is not just the obvious Syrian debacle, but also the one of a failed marriage. Ackerman comments on the genesis of the novel as an insight he had while meeting a revolutionary friend turned refugee. The man was having a conversation with his wife on the phone, and after he put the phone down he stated: “I was unfaithful and she’s never forgiven me.”
A great undiscovered jewel, and from what I infer, a book that deserves to get into every single book club in the nation, and beyond. My enthusiasm is perhaps excessive. There comes a time when a book appears and has valuable lessons to teach us. We learn something we never suspected existed. People in their 60s’ have a life as well, and they go through ups and downs like the rest of us, and still have to learn lessons along the way. They can even display resilience and an appetite for life. It is shocking that a publisher would publish a book that actually concerns our aging nation, where so much emphasis rests on the land of twenty-something Lena-Dunham wannabes teaching the world with great self-assurance life lessons and proper etiquettes. Which begs the question: what is more interesting, someone fumbling through life while brandishing a narcissistic flag and who seems to have all the answers? Or someone who has worked hard to build a life, only to lose everything overnight and who has to pick herself up to start again—at age sixty?
But bombshells come in all shapes and sizes, especially those that take our lives over. John Wells who has semi-retired from duty and now lives in slow-tempo Montana, learns that he is the father of a baby girl, Emma. He discovers an unsuspected side of himself. He actually enjoys playing dad, even though he completely failed at his first attempt with his now-grown son. As you suspected, this idyllic life could not last forever. Wells is pulled back into action the day he receives a phone call from a Bulgarian jail where Muslim terrorists are incarcerated. Unable to convince the highest authority of his discovery, Wells must once again assume his former disguise within a much broader and brutal al Qaeda to go undercover in Bulgaria and locate the true identity of the traitor. A rather strange parallel with reality, now that it seems obvious that US officials have colluded with Russia. You may ask yourself: do we have secret agents infiltrated in the Russian government to help us?

“Garden of Lamentations,” takes us from the get-go on a double-spiral ride. The Kincaid-James team works separately. First Gemma is involved in the investigation of the murder of a young woman, whose body is discovered in one of Notting Hill’s private gardens. Suspicion does not lag; for this macabre discovery is located in one of London’s most select neighborhoods. When another victim meets the same dark forces, Gemma knows that there is something more at play. Meanwhile, Kincaid, who fears for his life, has moved away from Gemma James, while he investigates a case involving members of the forces. Distrust reigns in the ranks, especially after an officer is violently assaulted. As a reader, you get to the point you wonder whether these two stories are ever going to cross path. I will not tell you how but partially points you in the direction. While Gemma foresees a potential solution to her crimes, she becomes aware that a child’s life rests in her hands . . . and this makes for a psycho-haunting uninterrupted read, with Kincaid to the rescue.
Upon reading “The Fire by Night,” Messineo’s remarkable and powerful debut novel, I could not help thinking about “Hidden Figures,” and how tenacious women made NASA’s spatial odyssey possible, and also “The English Patient” for the resilient tenderness the nurse displays towards her wounded soldiers, no matter the external circumstances. In “The Fire by Night,” we met a pair of unsung heroes, two nurses working on the front lines, one in Europe, Jo, and one in the South Pacific, Kay. Jo struggles to survive in a makeshift medical camp as German troops advance. Kay is kept captive in Manila at the hands of sadistic Japanese soldiers. Both women where friends in Nursing school and only when they come home do they realize that they now must fight a different kind of enemy, not only their own disillusion, trauma, and losses but also a world forever changed. A world they struggle to adjust to. One of the paradoxes of wars is that one can find endless resilience to fight a well-defined enemy. Life in freedom however may not be as extreme in terms of survival, but the enemy is veiled. Communities and friendships are paramount to heal the wounds. The nurses rely on each other to survive. My reference to films was not random. The world of nurses in wars, their sacrifices and resilience in the face of the utmost atrocities, tending to others while striving for their own survival, have been broadly neglected. The novel deserves to find its way to the big screen. It has been written for it.
The unfaithfulness here is the revolution, the belief, the inspiration, and hopes it breeds while commanding enormous sacrifices. For Ackerman a revolution is a like a marriage: two souls come together and unite to form a new ideal. When a marriage fails, parties have to reenter or recreate a new reality, often with extreme suffering. This insight lies at the core of “Dark at the Crossing.” It is a novel of fragmentation and dissolution, where sacrifices can only meet grief, insanity for the fight of lost causes. Add the loss of a child to the mix and you get a gut-squirming novel, written with the spare prose of an unforgiving Hemingway. There’s darkness all around, and perhaps a different kind of redemption. But don’t expect Hollywood, with its compulsory tendency to romanticize all situations, where a couple would develop the ultimate love, to rescue you. Wars, no matter how we look at them, are no favorable breeding grounds for love. Life, however, still pulses below, and this is where you will find the best of humanity.
This is exactly what happens to Meredith Maran who had a perfect life, meaning living with a sense of safety that one could not ask for more, with a good marriage (to the woman of her dream), a beautiful Victorian house, a good writing career, and an active social life. And then Life came knowing at her door, like it tends to when things are going too well, and it took everything away, and more. The best friend dies; her father is diagnosed with Alzheimer; she loses her job, and the house, along with the marriage. Welcome to “The New Old Me.” This is where we meet Meredith, dead broke about to move to La La Land, CA, where she struggles to rebuild her life and self, with all the scrawny feathers that come attached to them, heartache, loneliness, and self-doubt. The energy of the prose however shows us that beyond the circumstances lies a strong-willed and witty woman, and sure enough slowly Meredith crawls out of her trenches, and she does with humor. For those in search of summer inspiration, this is your book. Look no further. (It was my wife’s favorite read so far this year.)

GALLOPING INTO SUMMER By Jane Pontarelli
H
ello my wonderful Pet Lovers. I promise you all a beautiful Summer, Allergies and all, but we are here to celebrate our life and our fur babies, who make our lives so rewarding. But this month we have a twist, which I know you will all enjoy. I introduce you to very special four legged pets. Say hello to Lucas and Lola, who just happen to be horses, Lola and Lucas are pure breed Olderburg Warmbloods, who just happen to be a bonded pair to and one another. Tanya their beautiful owner never thought she would own a horse, let alone two. Enter Mark the husband who always knew she wanted and loved horses. Surprise, surprise she got two. But more about them later. The love of Tanya’s life is Bella, a miniature Pinscher who goes everywhere with Tanya. They go shopping together and go for long walks and visit grandma and grandpa. But Bella’s favorite pastime, is the beach, Bella jumps in her beach bag and off they go. Tanya told me that Mark surprised her with the buying of Windtree Farm which is close to their home. Enter a whole new world of riding and horse life. Every evening Bella and Tanya visit to check on the horses and give them carrots and attend to grooming needs. The mascot of the barn is a cat named Luna who Tanya rescued. In the daytime Tanya enjoys going on trail rides into the woods and occasionally rides in her own indoor ring when the weather is bad. Tanya has recently been awarded her PhD and Bella and her other rescue housecat Black Beauty should deserve some of the credit for they were her loyal sidekicks while Tanya burned the midnight oil. So happy summer from Tanya, Mark, Bella, Lucas, Lola, Black Beauty and Luca.. Please open your hearts and open your homes and rescue. There is always room at the Inn. For we all have much love to give.
