A SPIRIT OF CHANGE
HOT TECHS By Josh Estrin
A
s March marks the official beginning of spring, we welcome the transition from the dark depths of winter to the hope and renewal of spring. While we can’t change the past, the future can impact, influence and change our present actions. This month we chose to profile noteworthy individuals, influencers and philanthropists who are affecting change and making a difference in this world whether it’s through policy, fundraising, or raising awareness. We profiled Muna Rihana Al-Nasser who established the UN Women for Peace Association, which is dedicated to ending violence towards women around the world. Her annual fundraiser in March has raised awareness to this endemic problem that faces women around the world as she has brought these issues to the top of the political agendas. We also got up close and personal with our cover star, Deborra-Lee Furness Jackman, who is an outspoken advocate for Hopeland, an adoption awareness charity, and also the honoree at the UN Women for Peace Association Gala. More than just the wife of heartthrob Hugh Jackman, Deborra is candid and passionate about her philanthropic endeavors as she opened up to the injustices she has seen in her role as a World Vision Ambassador and what she has done to effect change in Parliament to reform the adoption system in Australia. This past month New York City came back to life with a flurry of activities from hot new restaurant launches to Broadway revivals and openings, and of course NY Fashion Week paving the way for what’s to come in the Fall. We covered it all this month. Our spring travel escapes took us to the far reaches of the globe from Aurora Hunting in the Northern Arctic Circle in Sweden to the exotic landscapes of South Africa, and the lesser known regions of Italy. Of course we highlighted luxurious weekend getaways such as Boston, Miami and the Caribbean. Finally we showcased rising star Danielle Savre, who is starring in Tyler Perry’s new drama, Too Close to Home. With her natural beauty she was a perfect choice to don the best of spring fashion shot in a swoon worthy Tribeca PH loft at the historic Sterling Mason building and enhanced by the lush floral arrangements by B Floral. Here she opened up on how she identified with her flat protagonist character, an atypical heroin, who can only change herself by confronting her mistakes. In the spirit of changes happening around and within us, Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror perfectly summates the theme of this month: I’m starting with the man in the mirror I’m asking him to change his ways And no message could have been any clearer If you wanna make the world a better place. Take a look at yourself, and then make a change…

BEHIND THE VELVET ROPE MARCH 2017
By Joe Alexander | With Photographs by Patrick McMullan The Great White Way If you only see one Broadway show in your life see Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard. She is thrilling and the music by Andrew Lloyd Webber is unforgettable. When Close was asked what her favorite piece of memorabilia is after her Oscar and Tony Awards she said, “the knife from Fatal Attraction. I hung it in my kitchen. It’s my way of saying, ‘Don’t mess with me.’ The limited run show has been extended through June 25th….. Robert DeNiro teamed up with four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks to co-direct a fun musical adaption of A Bronx Tale. DeNiro said, “I don’t approve of political jokes, I’ve seen too many of them get elected.” …..Liev Schreiber, who’s usually seen hitting people with a baseball bat on the exciting Showtime smash Ray Donovan, dons breeches and a ponytail on the Great White Way to become a suave lover in this witty adaption of the 18th century novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses (The Dangerous Liaison) which stars Janet McTeer. Schreiber who recently separated from Naomi Watts said “I get very nervous around famous people and I get nervous around beautiful women.” ….The irrepressible Nathan Lane and John Goodman star in the hilarious revival of The Front Page. This is a don’t miss classic about tabloid newspaper reporters, sexy secretaries, publishers and gangsters. Lane quips, “I have to accept the fact that, no matter what I do, it’s going to annoy someone.” …..Multi-platinum recording artist Josh Groban makes a strong Broadway debut in the delightful The Great Comet.

Anthony and her fellow suffragettes. “In 1921 a statue was conceived of the original 3 founders of the suffrage movement, including Susan B. Anthony. It was stored in the Capitol’s basement until 1997 because a member of congress said the women were too ugly to be in the Capitol’s Rotunda. Finally, the Senate said that if the NWHM paid $86,000 to move the statue, it could go from the basement to the Rotunda where it is today.” Nwhm.org

ICONS INFLUENCERS &
GAREB SHAMUS The Consummate Connectivist By Nina Kullmann
A
pioneer in the world of pop art, comic books, and the sports world, Gareb Shamus is the founder of the Wizard World and ToyFare empire, the owner of Comic Con festivals, and founder of the IFL which was broadcast on the Fox Networks. He is now pursuing his other passion in life as a contemporary artist. As the art world is on a constant quest for what’s new, Shamus has developed an original technique for his paintings that connects art with his audience. The creations exude vitality and positivity and portray his interpretation of life, casting a spell over everyone who is fortunate enough to view them in person. Resident Magazine visited Shamus at his West Chelsea gallery and wanted to know what inspires this enigmatic and successful entrepreneur turned artist and what is next on his agenda. RM: Tell us about the inspiration and the mediums. How do you choose the mediums? GS: I use acrylic paint and use individual drops of paint. All of my paintings have tens of thousands of drops on them. But, they are all very organized into really interesting patterns. RM: What do you visualize first? The patterns? The colors? GS: The technique that I have emanates out of my life. I had a very blessed life, a successful business, an amazing family and kids. I started Comic Con and I really helped bring superheroes to the forefront of pop culture and the media. But, because of that, people always wanted things from me, so I would keep people at a distance. When I came up with a technique for my paintings I wanted do something fun and engaging, and also allowed me to reach back out to people. That gave me the idea to have the paint extrude from the canvas. Once I developed that technique, each of my pieces tells a story.
RM: You have some paintings that are really abstract and you have some where you follow a specific pattern. What’s going through your mind when you’re doing each one? GS: For me it starts with the story or the theme. In some cases I might say I want to fill my life with great people, great thoughts and great ideas, so I’ll make a white-on-white painting to create a pattern that shows growth. And then I think about what growth looks like, things that grow naturally, maybe trees. While talking about my subject and realizing it, it literally just comes to me. Once I’ve figured that out, I mix the colors and prepare the canvas. The work is very meditative for me. My phone is off, my computer is down and I put some great music on. RM: What’s the next project you are working on? GS: I’m getting ready for Scope New York which is one of the largest art fairs in Manhattan. The show works with some of the best artists in the world and also with top emerging artists. They do an amazing job. I’m also working on setting up shows on a global level from New York to Munich to Tokyo to London to Brussels and Switzerland. It’s going to be a pretty exciting year. RM: Were there any other artists that inspired you? GS: I have lots of artists they inspire me in terms of what I’d be able to do as an artist. I think that it’s inspiring to see the details, the techniques, the mediums and the craft. I am also inspired by how they get their art and their message out into the world. So much of what I do is about connecting, and using art as a way to connect people. garebshamus.com

CRISTINA VERGER Wedding & Event Planner By Bennett Marcus
F
or over fifteen years Cristina Verger has run her eponymous events planning firm, creating everything from corporate and society gatherings to birthday parties, but it’s weddings that she most enjoys working on. WEDDINGS: There are no do-overs. “A wedding is emotional, it’s forever, there is no do-over. It has to be perfect no matter what,” Italian-born, New York-based Verger says. For that reason, she personally handles every detail of any weddings her firm takes on. “No one is going to speak to my assistants when they’re planning a wedding. They’re meeting with me on everything.” She has always done it that way, even back when she was director of catering at prominent venues like Windows on the World, where she had a large staff and high volume. “Weddings can be very difficult. You have to know how to deal with people in a certain way. It’s almost impossible to teach someone; you either have it or you don’t have it.” To make sure she is able to give each wedding the proper attention, Verger only takes on a maximum of eight per year. She goes the extra mile, for instance personally delivering custom-made table linens to the venues, and even performing the seemingly impossible, like bumping an entire wedding for 250 people to the following day in January 2016, when a blizzard hit New York City. “Weddings are fun to do because it’s the event that really needs you, it’s where you really can have an impact,” she says. She is discreet about naming her high-profile clients, but among them are a television news personality, a professional athlete and an owner of the Minnesota Twins. BRANCH OFFICERS: Rome, Milan, Florence, & Paris With satellite offices in Rome, Milan, Florence and Paris, destination weddings have become something of a specialty of Verger’s, often in Europe, but also pretty much anywhere, from Ver-

mont to Aspen to Costa Rica, where a couple had fallen in love with a jungle town that was practically off the grid, complete with dirt roads, and decided they had to marry there.
Hers is a boutique company specializing in giving clients a different experience. “If you want something unusual, it’s not a Pierre wedding, it’s not a Plaza wedding, it’s not a St. Regis wedding, it’s your wedding, that’s what I’m going to make it,” Verger explains. HARVARD CLUB She has spent thirty years working in hospitality. After a brief stint in finance, she got a job with the Helmsley Corporation at the St. Moritz Hotel, where within a year and a half she became director of the banquet department. After that, Verger worked at Windows on the World, running a department grossing $20 million per year. She then spent seven years as director of catering for the Harvard Club of New York City. But she always wanted her own business, so eventually decided to take that chance, and the com-
pany is now in its 16th year. Now, while planning events at venues in New York, she often meets people that have trained under her or worked for her. But her love affair with hospitality actually began in childhood, in Rome, where her family owned a hotel that her mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother ran. “My dream was always to run the hotel, and it was against my mother’s wishes because she felt that that was a job that left you no time for your private life, just like hers.” She would beg to be allowed to skip school and instead spend the day at her mother’s side, learning the ins and outs of running the hotel. The family moved to the U.S. when she was a teenager, but Verger thinks her European background and command of several languages benefits her clients. “I think if you’re born in Europe, because the countries are so close together, you are naturally exposed to so many different cultures, you create a much better bridge for the American who wants to get married abroad.” Cristinaverger.com | (212) 715 – 0590

A WOMAN WITH A MISSION
Muna Rihani Al Nasser By Hillary Latos
A
s the chairwoman of the UN Women for Peace Association, Muna Rihani Al Nasser is passionately fighting violence against women worldwide. As an ambassador’s wife for over a decade, she has been privy to the inner workings of international government policies as well as the private sector which she has tapped to assist in eradicating these atrocities towards women. Through her fundraising efforts to their annual March in March to End Violence Against Women, she has worked tirelessly to raise awareness amongst policymakers and has made strides in effecting change through educating women in war-torn countries. Here, Resident Magazine catches up with this global powerhouse to learn more about the efforts behind the UN Women for Peace Association. Each year, the UN Women for Peace Association honors individuals who have made a difference in the lives of women and girls.
38 | resident.com
RM: What are the missions of the UN Women for Peace Association? MR: UN Women for Peace started with few ambassadors’ wives who were trying to promote the idea of empowering women and ending bans against women. At the beginning, this organization that we started was really like a club. But we later realized that the best thing to do was target the private sector to give back to the United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence Towards Women. As this is part of the general assembly, there are no politics in this trust fund because all the money goes to a pool which gives grants to organizations that end violence against women. It can be towards ending sex trafficking or domestic violence, or for education and changing mindsets, so it covers all kinds of violence against women all over the world. The money goes to these countries according to their needs, not according to who they are. As I was the wife of the Qatar ambassador for over a decade , I realized that through his work at the UN all governments put women’s issues at the bottom of the agendas. So, I thought if we draw the attention from the private sector and give back to the UN, in this sense, we provide more money for women’s issues. We also wanted to push governments to change their policies and prioritize women’s issues. Over the last two years, the terror of ISIS over refugees all over the world has become obvious. We need to save these girls in refugee camps through education or else they will be recruited into ISIS groups or left on the streets, which could lead to child brides, sex trafficking, and other kinds of abuse. This year, our main
priority is to launch schools for refugee girls. It is also important to build awareness in New York, which not only hosts the UN but serves as a role model to other countries. If the United States of America supports women’s issues and empowers women, other countries will follow. RM: When did you launch? MR: Four years ago, we started a march (March in March)to End Violence Against Women in celebration of International Women’s Day. It started at the UN which represents a symbol of freedom for everyone. We also launched our annual Awards Luncheon to celebrate International Women’s Day and to honor people who are working effortlessly for women and girl’s issues. It is a vehicle to generate funding for our programs. We also have a big media campaign to show people that it’s a responsibility of every one of us. We have to engage men as well, because as much they are part of the problem, they are part of the solution. Unwomenforpeace.org
UN Women for Peace Association’s Annual Awards Luncheon will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017 at the UN Nations Headquarters in celebration of International Women’s Day. Guests of Honor will include President of the General Assembly, Peter Thomson, and his wife, Marijcke Thomson, Martha Stewart, and Ambassador Nancy Brinker. This year’s honorees are Mrs. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcukva (Executive Director, UN Women); Loreen Arbus (Loreen Arbus and The Loreen Arbus Foundation/The GoldensonArbus Foundation); David Batstone (President & Co-Founder, Not For Sale); Dayle Haddon (Founder & CEO, WomenOne); Deborra-Lee Furness (Co-Founder, HOMELAND); and Lin-Manuel Miranda (for his overall support of women’s rights). UN Women for Peace Association, founded in 2008 under the patronage of H.E. Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, raises awareness and advances the goals of UN agencies who provide opportunities for women through social, cultural, educational, and empowerment programs under the banner of a global peace building process. All of our proceeds go directly to the UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women, which aims to prevent violence against women and girls, provides services and programs to those affected by violence, and strengthens the implementation of laws and policies on such violence.

ALLEN DALTON The King of Party Planning By Nina Kullmann
B
eing an event planner is one of the most challenging professions. That is no wonder, though, because everyone wants their party to be the only one of its kind. One man is able to grant his clients that wish. His name is Allen Dalton. In the world of event planning he is considered to be the high society’s best-kept secret and a master magician when it comes to his job. As the president of Allen Dalton Productions LLC for 20 years, Allen, along with his VP Marc Berman, have produced the biggest luxury events which include celebrity publication and even exclusive royalty parties. As Dalton’s clientele is solely made up of the cream of society, he is highly apt at being discrete.
Dalton’s magical events are incomparable to any other parties. Whenever he plans an event, the preplanning stages include a discussion of the concept, the venue selection, the feel and look of the event, the type of food for guests, the kind of entertainment wanted, and the total budget. In order to make sure that his clients can enjoy the most unique entertainment experience possible, he works with superb vendors who provide various services. Only 150-plus people per year are entertained by Dalton’s production skills. If you are amongst the
In the past, he has provided entertainment for a party where John Fogerty performed at; a lunch that Barbara Streisand attended; and produced an event for Britain’s royal family. When an A-list over the top event needs to be executed, he is the go-to guy. While working in the hotel business, Dalton realized that he wanted to open an exclusive entertainment production company. His former job was planning large industry-themed parties for major corporations. Eventually, he changed his profession to which he is passionately devoted to. Obviously, planning events is not always easy. Some days are tougher than others. One time, during a hurricane, Dalton was doing a wedding at Chelsea Piers. Water began to rise in the ballroom and he was worried about his staff’s safety. Luckily, everyone made it home without any incidents. Sometimes his clientele’s wishes are rather challenging, wherefore Dalton has to work his magic on a whole new level. Once he had a client who asked for live tigers for an event. Of course, he was able to make that unbelievable dream come true.

privileged few, don’t treat the opportunity lightly. The master magician will pull all necessary strings to ensure that his clients are satisfied, so that your event will surely be one of the most historic moments on your social calendar. Aside from providing entertainment, Dalton represents exclusive talent, including electric violinist Lorenzo Laroc, DJ Super Dave, funk and R&B party band Project Orange, modern mentalist Kevin Nicholas, and Dream Lab LED Robot. 212 935 4000 | allendalton.com

INMODE MACHINE Although she won’t tell us whom, Scher counts boldface names among her clients, including a 22-year-old supermodel. “I’ve been called the celebrity aesthetic nurse,” she says. Her patients range in age from 21 to 81 because Scher understands that everyone wants to look their best. Today people take better care of themselves, and with good diet and exercise, many are able to avoid having facelifts and opt for noninvasive treatments. A big enhancement to her practice is the InMode machine, which delivers aesthetic procedures using radio-frequency, laser and pulsed light technologies. Because Jane is staying in tune of all the latest techinques, she worked with the InMode machine, which many of the op plastic surgeons have invest interest in too.
JANE SCHER
Celebrity Aesthetic Nurse By Bennett Marcus NURSE INJECTOR ith the increasing popularity of injectable skincare treatments like Botox and fillers, spas have been proliferating everywhere. But do you ever stop and wonder where the aesthetician was trained, and how much experience they really have before they stick that needle in? Jane Scher, who after a highly successful career as a certified plastic surgery nurse in operating rooms where she worked with renowned doctors including Sherrell Aston, Alan Matarasso and Dr. Sam Rizk, a facial plastic surgeon at top hospitals including Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat, has established a unique practice of her own, giving patients injectable treatments with superior knowledge.

Scher. “These aestheticians are doing procedures, and I’m not saying that they’re not qualified, but they’re not as qualified as I am,” she adds, frankly. “You want somebody who has hands on experience, who has worked with their hands in a surgical arena for years, knows their anatomy and knows patient safety.” Even with low-risk procedures, things can go wrong. “If you are in a beauty parlor setting, you want to make sure they have the needed equipment to take care of any potential complications.” Scher points out. “You don’t have the necessary EpiPen. You have to make sure you’re qualified and in the proper setting to be doing these injectables.” AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PLASTIC SURGICAL NURSES She operates her Manhattan practice in a plastic surgeon’s office, so there is always a doctor on hand. She also continues to work with reconstructive surgeons, so she knows all the latest techniques, and she continues to study. She’s a mem-
DECADES OF EXPERIENCE But even with all of Scher’s years of experience, working with the machine has been a revelation. “The fact is, the machine is like a miracle; it transforms the skin and removes hyperpigmentation” Scher says. “It’s a noninvasive miracle. It does five different procedures, including fat-melting, skin tightening for both face and body, Skin texturing, skin toning with IPL (intense pulsed light) and also has an added benefit of removing light facial hair (peach fuzz). Doing multiple procedures at the same time saves the patient time and money, improves skin tone and texture by skin tightening and removing hyperpigmentation.” PLASTIC SURGERY Scher got her start in plastic surgery very young, at age 20, while she was married to a plastic surgeon she went in nursing school. Not long after, once she graduated from nursing school, she started doing injectables, which were not so common back then. After so many years working in top operating rooms, she made the decision to go out on her own. “For me, aesthetic is more fun,” she says. “It’s more creative. I get a lot of self-fulfillment out of what I do. I make patients aesthetically look better.” janescherrn.com | 212 452 1235

Angelo’s passions are his clients, his talented team and his family, who continually inspire him to create new hair care products and hair pieces that help women look and feel their very best. Proceeds of the event go directly to the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF), an international research organization dedicated to curing and preventing cancer. angelodavid.com
Her technique is very precise and requires accurate and deliberate strokes. Unlike a regular tattoo, microblading is drawn on with a manual handheld pen-like tool with a disposable micro blade attached. Piret uses thin strokes which implant pigment under the skin to mimic actual eyebrow hairs and delivers very natural results and is customized based on your desires and eyebrow shape and color. Microblading is also known as eyebrow embroidery, feathering or 3-D eyebrows and requires touch ups but can last up to two years. The day after your session, brows will appear darker than normal and you must keep them dry and apply provided ointments, however after one week, the color fades and your brows will be on their way to perfection. For those intimidated by something semi-permanent, Piret also offers brow shaping and tinting. This March, her studio will also be offering Eyelash tinting and Lashenhancement tattoo, also known as invisible eyeliner for the possibility of having gorgeous big eyes to match your new brows. Regardless of your selected service, Piret will leave you looking your best. Eyebrowdoctor.com | instagram.com/eyebrowdoctor/

MISS JESSIE’S
An Intimate Conversation with Co-founder Miko Branch By Chelsea Grant
W
ith March being women’s history month, it only seemed fitting to honor one of the most influential female entrepreneurs currently manning the helms of a multimillion dollar company. In the early 2000’s, Miko Branch and her late sister Titi Branch saw an avenue unexplored, and pioneered the age of hair products dedicated to the curl! You’re darn right; we’re talking Miss Jessie’s! Since their debut in 2004, Miss Jessie’s has become a household name, extending beyond it’s salon in Soho to national distribution including retail giants such as Target and Walmart. Last month Miko Branch, Co-Founder and CEO of Miss Jessie’s and New York Times Best Selling Co-Author of Miss Jessie’s: Creating a Successful Business from Scratch---Naturally, sat down with our VP of Marketing Chelsea Grant for an intimate conversation on being a female CEO and remaining a dominant player in the hair care industry. Resident Magazine: What made you and your late sister Titi decide to start Miss Jessie’s? Guest: We started Miss Jessie’s as a response to a need in the market. We discovered that many women, particularly with an African heritage had a tighter coiled kink, which is also known as a curl, needed to be serviced. RM: Is there anyone in your family that
48 | resident.com
you have drawn strength or inspiration from? Miko Branch: The two women in my family that I have drawn strength from would be my sister Titi Branch and my grandmother Jessie May Branch. My grandmother Jessie May Branch was the first female CEO that I had ever seen. Titi was my older sister, I learned so much from my sister in business and I know as a human being there was so many qualities and traits in her that I thought were valuable and worth emulating. RM: What was the most powerful moment you had as a female entrepreneur? Miko Branch: As a female entrepreneur, there was a moment that I realized I had to be accountable for my end of the partnership with my sister Titi Branch. And as we got more immersed in our business I realized that I needed to play a larger role in order to make sure we succeeded in business. RM: Have you ever been in the situation where your business expertise or credentials were down played maybe because you were a woman? Miko Branch: My business expertise and my credentials as a woman were a plus and it helped me very much because I chose beauty as my business. In my mind, I felt like I had more advantage over any man in the beauty industry. RM: How does Miss Jessie’s stay in the fore front if there are so many other
competitors that are popping up now? Miko Branch: Now that Miss Jessie’s has plenty of competitors, it is very important that Miss Jessie’s stays true to our brand. They focus more on what the needs are and we try not to be too occupied to what our competitors are doing, because many of them are doing what we’ve already done. RM: Who is the average Miss Jessie’s client? Miko Branch: In this present day and age, it is anyone that has curly, kinky or wavy hair. Miss Jessie’s has been around the early 2000’s and I think the word has gotten out effectively that we are great solution makers for people who have certain issues or certain challenges with curly or kinky hair. RM: For female entrepreneurs who want to start their own business in hair care or any other business, what advice do you have for them? Miko Branch: I encourage any female who is interested in starting a business to research as much as she can. I find women are special creatures and tend to be multi-taskers, and we tend to really have this gut, this eternal compass that leads up in the right direction. Miss Jessie’s products can be found online at MissJessies.com and in Target stores across the country. The Miss Jessie’s Salon is located on 441 Broadway, New York, NY 10013.

RM: Tell us a little bit about your role and this new show. DS: I play the role of Anna Belle Hayes, a flawed female protagonist which is specifically what I fell in love with about the role. Usually, you read a script and the protagonists are these heroes, the ones you look up to and root for. But, the entire show Anna is in search of redemption. It’s something so unique and beautiful. You don’t know if you agree with what she has done; but at the same time you feel for her, even though she has made some absolutely horrible decisions. Obviously, the drama in the show is very evident and every episode concludes with a cliff-hanger. Something so freeing and unique is that Tyler always says, “I want to see how you play the character and how you take my words and emote them on screen.” And then from there he watches so intently and you see that lightbulb go on during the scenes and then he comes over and says “I now know what I want to do with your character.”

RM: Do you identify with the character? DS: Well, I never had an affair so I can’t identify from that perspective. But, I think I can absolutely identify with someone that is trying to better their lives and in the process they hurt the people they love and in general make some pretty bad decisions. Anna’s life was pretty amazing before everything unraveled and the affair with the president went public. Unfortunately, that life was just a façade. She was Alice and she fell down the rabbit hole. And, Sadly in the process of Anna’s bettering of her life, she also abandoned her own daughter. So as much as I can identify with Anna, luckily the mistakes I’ve made haven’t been as severe. So yes, I absolutely connect to certain aspects of her. RM: You leave things behind. DS: You do. Sometimes you do have to leave certain elements of your past behind. I’m currently in love with Lukas Graham’s song Seven Years. He talks about how he had some friends in his past he had to let go of. And that song resonates so much with me because there are some people that played a huge part in my life at certain times, but are no longer around. Unfortunately, in Anna’s case she began to lose herself along the way. RM: How did you meet Tyler Perry? DS: I got the script and absolutely loved that Anna is this flawed protagonist, something so unique to come across. After I said I was interested, Tyler Perry flew me out to Atlanta to read for him and we just connected. There was this strong energy immediately when I walked into the room. It felt like, “It was meant to be. These are the people I

am meant to work with.” Tyler gave me a couple of compliments about my performance and the next day I was hired. I cherish those compliments the more I get to know Tyler. I have learned he isn’t one to constantly boost the actor’s ego so when he does have a compliment to give it holds so much more weight. RM: Tyler Perry is really known for his comedies more than his dramas. DS: I didn’t even know about his dramas before I signed on! I only had known of his comedies, as well. So I did my research and while I was watching his dramas I was in awe of how he is very how good he is at sucking you in with his writing style. I began to get so excited since I knew he was going to do that with our show as well. Adding to that excitement was that he announced before filming that our show would be nitty and gritty. He made sure we had barely any make-up, our hair would be completely undone, and our wardrobe was to look worn. Which is a scary thing for any actor about to film in high definition! He said “I want you to look and feel like the real characters I have written.” I embraced that and love that we are not sugar coating these peoples lives. RM: This is your first time with New York Fashion Week. How was your experience? DS: The first day I was so nervous, I was shaking. I just wanted everything to be perfect, but now that I’ve done it and realized fashion is just another form

of expression, I feel comfortable with it all. I love every designer, stylist and photographer I have met. They have all been so welcoming to a fashion newbie like me. And obviously being dressed in stunning designer outfits is a dream come true. RM: Who are some of your favorite designers? DS: Designers like Zac Posen, Alexander McQueen and Club Monaco always hit the classy, chic mark, which I love. However during fashion week I was introduced to and fell in love with Nicole Miller, Chi Zhang and Miguel Vieira whose runway shows where such an inspiration and a unique experience. That being said, for my day to day I’m simply obsessed with H&M. It basically just takes classic chic designs off the runway and makes it affordable for everyone to buy. RM: Do you engage in social media to keep up with your fans? DS: I do and I love it. Instagram is my favorite though! I love taking pictures. Twitter challenges me to keep what I need to say within 130 characters. For anyone who knows me that’s a difficult task! But of course, Facebook is the best way to stay in touch with childhood friends and to reach a global fan base. I’m learning how to try stay on top of it all! RM: With your live tweeting parties on Wednesdays for the shows airing do you ever get any pranksters?
DS: We haven’t gotten any pranksters yet. I did learn about trolling though when I encountered a few during my first Instagram live video. But as far as during our tweeting parties I don’t believe we have had to deal with that at all, just our awesome fans! RM: Are you always on the go? DS: Yes, always on the go! I basically live out of a suitcase. I’m born and raised and still based in LA, But I frequent New York constantly. I am currently on a press tour so after this I go to Indiana, Chicago and then back to LA. I am in Los Angeles for roughly about a fourth of the year, usually 5-7 days at a time. As crazy as it can be though, I still love it! Getting to meet new people, and experience different cities is very fulfilling. I don’t see myself slowing down anytime soon! RM: Do you come from a family of actors? DS: No not at all! My mother was a counselor and my father worked for the electric company. I had to beg my mother to be an actress. I was this super hyper kid who had a very wild imagination. Luckily, my best friend’s mom in second grade, who was an assistant to an agent convinced my mother that “You need to get Danielle into acting.” It took a while but eventually my mother took me to see the agent. I booked my first job and from then on continued to fall in love with the act of storytelling and emotion being captured on camera. Being on set, is where I feel the most comfortable, where I feel I belong.

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH
DEBORRA-LEE FURNESS By Hillary Latos • Photography by Russell James
58 | resident.com
A
n accomplished actress, activist artist and humanitarian, Deborra-Lee Furness is not a force to be reckoned with. Candid, impassioned and determined once she puts her mind to something there’s no stopping her, as Resident Magazine chats with Deborra-Lee about her family life with Hugh Jackman and her philanthropic endeavours and projects. RM: You are being honoured at the UN Women For Peace Association’s upcoming Luncheon and Awards Ceremony. Tell me about your role with that and your goals with Hopeland. DLF: My journey started in Australia when I was looking to adopt children there and I realized what a difficult process it was that can take up to ten years. I ended up adopting two children from America. I went to the media to advocate the difficulties that people incur with adoption which got the attention of the prime minister. Through this journey I uncovered an anti adoption system within the bureaucracy in Australia based on what had happened in the 60s and 70s which was portrayed in the movie Philomena. From the 1950s-70s women having babies out of wedlock was frowned upon and their babies were taken from them for adoption. And now these are the very women who are working within the system to shut down adoption. I was told they regard adoption as barbaric because of their own myopic suffering. I feel that this is so wrong. In the movie Lion it took this woman 16 years to go through the system to adopt. There was also a recent case of a guy was finally legally adopted at 45 by the family he was living with his whole life, he had his own family already yet he said this changed his world. It’s huge. Eventually the child ages out and that’s what the system aims to do because they didn’t want adoption to happen. This is the legislation that we just changed. These kids couldn’t be adopted because they are waiting for mum to stop taking drugs and for dad to come out of jail so they stayed within the foster care system with new damage and new placements all the time. Foster parents would nurture them back to health because these kids had been mentally and physically abused and then the Department would come and get the kids to return them back home. I’ve had foster mums tell me they can’t do this anymore and return them to their broken homes.
Some of these kids have had 6-8 foster placements. There are 40,000 kids permanently removed from their families because they were so dysfunctional and they weren’t allowed to be adopted. Can you imagine what that is like? To constantly be the new kid in the family and never feel a sense of belonging- this induces drugs, prostitution, suicide. So the biggest thing that Hopeland wants to provide is pre and post adoption support to educate families. Some of these kids are dysfunctional because they have been abused like an alley cat. They need to be given the tools to nurture a child back to health. They need as much education as possible which is starting to happen. We put this back on the political agenda, it wasn’t talked about in Parliament, now it’s on the agenda, they are talking about the methodology and the Prime Minister is trying to change the system. So we started National Adoption week which morphed into Adopt Change and went through several prime ministers and the last one took on the issue to change legislation and make it easier for kids to become adopted. That was Australia and now I’m bringing this campaign to America. When I was traveling with President Clinton for the Clinton Global Initiative I spoke at the Global Citizen Festival with Hopeland and announced the Declaration of Dependence, as kids are depending on us and their caretakers. As an ambassador for World Vision, I am traveling the world to Cambodia seeing orphans in impoverished situations. Why does UNICEF say there are 157 million orphans, it’s about mental health, the lack of female empowerment, maternal health, lack of education, contraception. A number of these orphans also have living parents some may be suffering mental health. Many of these kids are relinquished because of poverty, and the parents think if they relinquish their children they will be fed, but it’s false, they become damaged. We’re working with JK Rowling about shutting orphanages down, and finding a solution such as individual families to nurture the children. There’s a science behind it, children are not mentally or physically developing in orphanages and they lack self esteem. Hopeland has a synergy with the UN Women for Peace Association because female empowerment and ending violence towards women works because these women have to be educated and healthymentally and physically to care for their children.
A child’s health begins in the womb, they feel every stress of their birth mother even when she is emotionally and physically damaged. Hopeland is an awareness campaign that encompasses everyone working in this arena and we show the community what is happening in the world. We are not a service provider. We speak to the community and tell the world this is unacceptable. What do we do? Let’s create systems that serve families and children. RM: So you have been quoted that you don’t want Hugh Jackman starring with Angelina Jolie, though she is a big advocate for adopting refugee children. DLF: Oh my God, that was said so tongue and cheek and off the cuff at some interview. And I was actually trying to giving her a compliment saying you’re gorgeous. It was a joke I said at a function in Sydney, but name me one woman that would want their husband starring with Angelina. But I do respect everything she does and her work with refugees. RM: What inspired you to devote your time to charity work? DLF: My mother just passed four months ago, she was my life. Just before she passed she got the order from Australia for all of her charity work and it was instilled in me that this is what we do in life, you go into service for others. She did a lot of cancer foundation work. I was so close to my mother and this was probably the hardest thing I’ve been through. RM: Would you ever consider a job in politics? DLF: No I would be terrible in politics because I believe everyone. I think to be a politician you have to be diplomatic and have patience while I just say what I mean. I chose a very politically savvy person to be on my board and she would just sit there and jab me every time I would say something I had to stop. I’m not strategic, I’m more passionate and politicians don’t listen to emotion they listen to data. They won’t sit there and hear my sob story about an orphan in Cambodia who won’t have a life. That’s why with Hopeland we hope to collect real data for the scenario for these kids. RM: What projects are you working on now?
resident.com | 59
DLF: I just finished an Australian TV series which was fun because I haven’t been acting in a while since I have two children and that takes a lot of creativity. After my loss, I’m in the Jewish religion which means I need to shut down for a year so I haven’t been as proactive with all of my projects and have been staying still so I’ve been painting. I’ve tapped back into my creative side and writing scripts with friends and when I grow up I’m going to direct a movie. That’s the plan, it’s life, it sort of evolves and changes. RM: You recently celebrated your twentieth wedding anniversary with Hugh Jackman, what is the secret? DLF: The key to a successful relationship is very simple, you just pick the right one and it only gets better. Sometimes I feel like it was just yesterday, like we are newlyweds. He makes me laugh more than anyone, he’s up there with Melissa McCarthy. And my husband always says ‘Don’t argue with her, she’s always right.’ RM: Was love at first sight? DLF: When I first met Hugh I had so much work I could hardly breathe. It was so organic and obvious about two weeks after working with him. But we had such a connection but started as friends first.
RM: Do you feel like this connection goes beyond this realm like a past life connection? DLF: Maybe. Yeah, I do feel like he is my soulmate. RM: So I read that you are a Sagittarius and Hugh is a Libra. DLF: Yes and it’s supposed to be a great match. My sister is Sagittarian and my husband is a Libra, my best friend is a Sagittarius and her husband is a Libra. He is very balanced which is good. He’s smart but also very straightforward and honest too. He would probably think about something before saying it. Whereas I just say the truth, I am a terrible bullshitter and am very straightforward and impulsive and I hate injustice. If someone has passion for something I look at this and not how many degrees that person has or experience. I believe in astrology. RM: I do to. There are definitely signs I don’t like. DLF: I think I know which ones you are going to say. Scorpio women have a sting, I had two Scorpio boyfriends, they are sexy. My daughter is a Cancer. Gender is important. Capricorn men- they think too much it’s boring. Pisces men are too wishy washy. So many times I can just tell what sign they are from their characteristics.
RM: Do you like living in LA? I feel like it’s a bit like Logan’s Run. DLF: I know it’s like Logan’s Run especially for actresses. God bless Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren and Susan Sarandon. RM: Do you travel a lot together as a family? DLF: We are traveling constantly. My kids love to travel and grew up traveling the world and if Hugh is working on location we go to visit him. We’re World Vision ambassadors so we’ve been to Cambodia. They have seen dire scenarios and extreme poverty. My 16 year old wants to go to Morocco and build houses for the poor, because he’s aware of things from our travels and at such a young age he feels a responsibility and wants to do something. RM: What are some of your favorite places in New York? What you guys like to do as a family? DLF: I came here I was ten years old and started my love affair with the city. I love that New York has so many doors and behind those doors you can’t imagine what you will find. Hugh and I love to explore discover new areas like Chinatown or the Lower East Side. I love the diversity and the fact that there are so many artists here, my son is an artist. You can do everything as a kid here you have all of these museums at your doorstepthe Met, The New Museum. There’s so much stimulation and not enough time. That’s the other side of New York. Everyone is so driven and always achieving something. I want my achievements to be having a hot chocolate with my kids. We think because we are manifesting productivity that it’s achieving but it’s not necessarily so. Now I’m doing things that make me happy, and being in the moment, and when you are fully present in the moment that is true happiness to me. Happiness is success. Not how much money you have at the end of the day or how many followers. I just saw on Twitter today Hitler had millions of followers, Jesus had twelve… Deborra-Lee will be honoured at the UN Women for Peace Association’s Luncheon on March 10, 2017 for her continuing work with Hopeland. The UNWFPA Luncheon and Awards Ceremony, held annually in New York City at the United Nations, celebrates those who work towards ending violence against women and children. Previous honorees include Trudie Styler, Paul Bettany, and Robert Kraft.

Biscayne Beach
EAST EDGEWATER Miami’s Newest Luxury Destinaton By Nina Kullmann
E
ast Edgewater is one of Miami’s most appealing and fastest growing neighborhoods with panoramic vistas of Biscayne Bay and a convenient proximity close to the Design District, Wynwood Art District, Midtown and Downtown, which are the go-to destinations for luxury shopping, high-end dining and worldclass arts & culture. In short, it is the IT-place to reside. Situated directly along Biscayne Bay just north of downtown Miami’s central business district and east of Biscayne Boulevard between the city’s two main bridges – the Venetian and Julia Tuttle causeways – the East Edgewater enclave is only minutes away from Miami’s famous beaches with residences at a fraction of the price in comparison to Miami Beach. The up-and-coming district is often compared to as the city’s new “South of Fifth” district, a popular Miami Beach neighborhood which experienced a similarly dramatic makeover in the 1990s
and early 2000s. With East Edgewater’s transformation already underway, we will really start to see the emerging neighborhood come to life over the next few years with the rise of new residential developments, restaurants, beautiful parks, a stunning waterfront bay walk, and thousands of new residents – some of which even include professional athletes and celebrities. At the forefront of East Edgewater’s emergence is South Florida developer Two Roads Development – the firm is putting the finishing touches on its Biscayne Beach condominium, a 52-story luxury waterfront tower built in partnership with GTIS Partners, which is set to open to residents in the spring of 2017. These units include 1-to-3 bedroom condos and six two story upper penthouses, which measure up to 12,000 square feet in size. For over the top luxury, the penthouses include private rooftop terraces with swimming pools and outdoor kitchens. As these residences are equipped with the most modern technology and furniture, prices range from $400,000 to over
$9 million. Two Roads Development specializes in luxury development with properties that feature the best location, architecture, amenities and services in the industry. The company takes pride in over 120 years of combined experience in developing, financing, and marketing residential and commercial projects across the United States. The interior design of Biscayne Beach was created by internationally acclaimed designer, Thom Filicia, who is known for his sophisticated ‘beach chic’ designs and a close friend of developer Reid Boren, one of the partner at Two Roads Development. Filicia has designed properties for numerous celebrities, including Tina Fey, Peter Jennings, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony and is famous for his role on the Emmy Award-Winning show, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Filicia has been recognized as an “A-List Designer” by Elle Décor and named one of the “Top 100 Designers” by House Beautiful. One of the main rea-

sons the development team chose Filicia to design Biscayne Beach’s interior was that Two Roads “Wanted a design that is not typically seen in the Miami Market,” said Boren. “Thom is not quite informal, but not quite casual in his aesthetics and his designs are tasteful and elegant with an American influence in his use of texture and color.” Two Roads’ newest East Edgewater project in the market is Elysee Miami, a boutique 57-story tower being developed directly on Biscayne Bay with only 100 half-floor and full-floor residences. With preconstruction sales currently underway, unit prices range from $1.39 million to $10 million, and up to $14 million for penthouses. Elysee’s distinct three-tiered telescoping shape will provide direct, unobstructed 180-degree bay and city views from every residence. As for the interior design, Paris-based designer Jean-Louis Deniot has been tapped to design the common spaces for Elysee Miami. ELLE Decor has featured him and Architectural Digest has twice listed the designer on their AD 100 list saying that Deniot is one of the world’s preeminent talents in architecture and interior design. His signature aesthetic is characterized by eclectic and emblematic interiors, that are pure in style. Deniot’s projects can be seen all over the world including New Delhi, Moscow, Manhattan and Beverly Hills. CHASING THE AURORA 5 Reasons to Visit the Swedish Lapland By Hillary Latos

ven to the well travelled Swedes, a visit to the Swedish Lapland during the winter is an exotic adventure. Set amongst snowcapped mountains lit by sunlight that straddles twilight and dusk this region is best known for seeing the Northern Lights, but it is also home to Europe’s last remaining indigenous people- The Sami. Here’s a guide to our favorite attractions in the gorgeous and relatively undiscovered Swedish Lapland. Aurora Hunting in Abisko Park The most well known attraction of this region is The Northern Lights- or the Aurora Borealis, nature’s dancing lightshow caused by solar wind showers hitting the Earth’s magnetic field. Since its first observation dating back to 2,600 BC, this otherworldly Aurora Borealis has captivated cultures generating tales of folklore and myths around this magical experience. According to Swedish legend frequent displays of Northern Lights is a sign of good crop yields in the coming year. Italy’s Lesser Known Regions:The Tuscan Countryside & Calabria. By Mosaka Williamson
N
orth of the magnificent bustling city of Rome and far south of the Amalfi Coast, lined with small towns precariously perched between mountains and the sea, are beautiful lesser explored regions of Italy. These regions are removed from tourists, rich with natural beauty, and secret getaways for the locals. These regions are perhaps some of the most noteworthy underrated places in Italy. Casciana Terme is a hidden gem in the heart of the Pisan Hills. The spa town has over one thousand years of history is a treasure the people of Tuscany have worked to preserve for centuries. The cuisine is authentic, the local vineyards, which make up most of the landscape, produce some of the most fantastic wine in all of Italy.
Casciana Terme is more than a spa set in the Tuscan countryside. Casciana Terme uses Acqua Mathelda, a thermal water that has been used in the Italian town for centuries. Recently, Acqua Mathelda has been recognized as a useful tool for rehabilitation therapy, cardiovascular and respiratory treatment, and an aid in the improvement of the digestive functions. In fact, the Institute of Motor Rehabilitation at the Terme di Casciana has always been at the forefront of the use of natural thermal treatment. One of the most fabulous places to enjoy Casciana Terme is at the apartments of Villa Borri. Nestled on a restored 18th-century farm that spans 7000 square meters, Villa Borri boasts 22 exquisite Tuscan styled apartments each unique and authentic
and outfitted with modern amenities. Villa Borri offers you a comfortable home away from home two minutes away from the thermal spas within the park. According to Villa Borri, “It was designed for customers wanting privacy and freedom and more than just a hotel room...A vacation or a weekend at Villa Borri will allow you to enjoy harmony and comfort together with beauty and wellness.” The Villa Borri spa and wellness center features Turkish baths, salt water pools, thermal swimming pools, hot tubs and even ice chambers. Deeper within the Tuscan countryside is Le Querciole, a nine hectare farm enshrouded with olive trees, wine vineyards, with copious fruit trees. Le Querciole boasts panoramic views from the hills surrounding Casciana Terme. The property holds a renovated farmhouse with six Tuscan styled apartments kitchens named after fruits grown on the farm- “Cherry”, “Fico”, “Grapes”, “Lemon”, “Peach”, and “Strawberry.” There is also a common barbeque located in the park, with a large swimming pool surrounded by olive trees. Recently, Le Querciole has become involved in making a significant ecological contribution to the

The fertile land, vines, sunshine and balanced rainfall have yielded crops producing excellent extra virgin olive oil and wine. If you are more of an epicurean and a lover of Italian food and wine, Calabria is paradise. Calabria makes up the bottom of the boot of Italy, the region is separated from Sicily by the Strait of Messina, and a short ferry ride away. The warm climate, crystal deep blue sea color, dramatic rocky coastlines that alternate with stunning sandy beaches are surprisingly lesser known by tourists. One of the biggest benefits of exploring this region is your ability to enjoy genuine local food, and the Magna Graecia a land of ancient settlements, breathtaking churches, monasteries, castles, and towns where old world tradition thrives. The New York Times recently recognized Calabria as one of the “52 Places to Go in 2017”. Danielle Pergament stated “Some of the best meals in Italy aren’t found in Rome or Tuscany but from the southern region of Calabria. The toe of Italy’s boot is making a name for itself in food and wine circles, led by places like Ristorante Dattilo, Ristorante Ruris in Isola Capo Rizzuto and Antonio Abbruzzino in Catanzaro. Known for spicy dishes and much of the world’s supply of bergamot, Calabria is pivoting toward lighter fare, organic farming and wine made from local grapes. “ The best way to explore the region is with a tour guide. One of the most comprehensive tours in the region is run by Chef Mark McDonald of the Italian Culinary Institute and the proprietor of Old Vine Cafe in Costa Mesa California. Chef

McDonald hosts the aptly named “Splendors of Southern Italy” tour, an annual 10-day all-inclusive culinary driven tour of Southern Italy with real chefs. Along with Chef John Nocita of The Italian Culinary Institute, you are taken through what can only be described as a “colorful gastronomic and cultural journey through the “old country” of Southern Italy”. When asked about how Chef McDonald was inspired to start this tour and about his involvement with the Italian Culinary Institute he had this to say, “Before opening Old Vine Café, I knew that I needed to broaden my culinary reach by immersing myself into a foreign culture. After much
research, I discovered the Italian Culinary Institute (ICI). Eleven years ago I moved to Calabria, Italy to study under Master Chef John Nocita of ICI, which remains the best professional decision I have ever made. My mind was opened to a new world of cooking, culture, and lifestyle that has forever changed my perspective on food...When I was living and studying in Italy, I knew that one day I wanted to share the hidden splendors of Italy with my future clients.” While on the tour in Calabria you will live Italy, not as a tourist but as an Italian. Enjoy a handson cooking lesson along the coast at the Italian Culinary Institute, then take a ride to an awardwinning winery and Le Castella at Isola. Then take the ferry across the sea to Sicily to visit ancient Greek ruins outside the beautiful seaside city of Taormina which overlooks the Ionian sea like a terrace. Then head to Syracuse for an authentic Italian cannoli tasting. Italy is a traveler’s dream. It boasts of the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the World. It is home to beautiful and charming cities, stunning coastlines, delicious wine, unparalleled food, piazzas, tradition, natural beauty, spa towns, and rarely explored regions. If you are interested in experiencing the real Italy as you have never seen it before, consider these unique options.

ROBBIE ROBERTSON Gives “Testimony” in Conjunction with the 40th Anniversary of “The Last Waltz” By Barry Bassis
F
orty years ago, the rock group The Band gave its final concert. The acclaimed film of that event, “The Last Waltz” was directed by Martin Scorsese. To commemorate the anniversary of the concert, there are a host of new releases, including a set with more of the music than had previously been available and “Testimony” (the title of a memoir on Crown Archetype by Robbie Robertson, the lead guitarist and principal songwriter of the group, as well as the title of a CD of his favorite tracks from his time with the Band as well as in later years). Robertson is as compelling telling the story of his life (ending with the Band’s breakup) as in the classic songs he penned. A son of a Mohawk Indian mother, he was raised in Toronto and did not learn until he reached adulthood that he had a Jewish father. He taught himself to play guitar and, while a teenager, joined the backup group of a journeyman rocker named Ronnie Hawkins. After four years, the backup band (known as the Hawks) left as a unit after a falling out with the leader. The group was made up of one American (Levon Helm from Arkansas) and four Canadians (Robertson, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson). They were basically a bar band until Robertson met Bob Dylan, who was
making the transition from acoustic to electric music and asked the Hawks to join him on tour.
He obtained a set designer, top photographers and studied the play list so that he knew what he wanted on camera.
They went from being a crowd pleaser in bars to being jeered at in stadiums, where Dylan usually performed solo in the first half with the band joining him in the second half to the consternation of legions of fans. Dylan was not perturbed.
UMe has released “Testimony” (with the same title and cover photo as the memoir). The 18 track CD covers Robertson’s entire career. About half are with the Band, plus one with Ronnie Hawkins and another with Levon and the Hawks. Two are with Dylan, including a live “Rainy Day Woman” that proves that Robertson didn’t exaggerate the master’s ability to come up with new lyrics each night. Finally, a couple of songs show that Robertson could sing effectively, something he didn’t do with the Band.
Later they moved to upstate New York and played with Dylan on what was later released as “The Basement Tapes.” In 1968, the album “Music from Big Pink” came out. Dylan wrote one of the songs and co-wrote two others with group members and also supplied the art work for the cover. Robertson contributed “The Weight” and three others. The group took the name of The Band, since that was how people often referred to them. Robertson emerged as the leading songwriter of the group, contributing such classics as “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” a Civil War song from the Southern point of view. Manuel, Danko and especially Helm handled the vocals. Their roots music was an original blend, different from what they had played with Hawkins or Dylan. An avid film enthusiast, Robertson claims his lyrics were influenced by the screenplays he read. There was sex and drugs along with the rock and roll, as Robertson and the Band traveled among music royalty. Robertson has plenty of colorful stories about his friends, but some of it is tragic, such as the narcotics use and car crashes. Before the Band called it quits, Robertson came up with the idea of a film of the farewell concert and he enlisted Scorsese. The director embarked on the project with the same dedication as to his fictional films.
“The Last Waltz: Fortieth Anniversary Edition” (on Rhino) comes in four editions. The collector’s edition contains Scorsese’s shooting script. All the sets have CDs of the music as well as DVDs of the film. In addition to the Band’s sterling performances of their own hits, there are the spectacular guests, including Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Neil Diamond and Van Morrison. It is a testament to the Band’s versatility that they backed up these varied artists, all of whom were in top form. The video and sound are crystal clear. What a concert!

PITTSBURGH CABBIES & ASSORTED BRITS By Barry Bassis
T
The author, Miles Malleson, usually played befuddled comic characters on stage and in films, such as the Sultan in the 1940 “Thief of Bagdad” (on which he also was one of the screenwriters).
Everybody on stage leads a hardscrabble life. Becker (John Douglas Thompson), who runs the service, has a son named Booster, who has just been released from a 20 year sentence for murder. Fielding (Anthony Chisholm) is an alcoholic while Turnbo (Michael Potts) is a gossip. Youngblood is a Vietnam vet (André Holland) secretly trying to buy a house for his wife, Rena (Carra Patterson),
Malleson was an advocate of open marriages and that is the subject of his play. The central figure, Stephen Meredith (Max von Essen) is a writer who has been married for eight years to Anne (Elisabeth Gray). Stephen is in a funk and his wife suggests that he have a fling with their recently widowed friend, Diana (Mikaela Izquierdo). They have a confidant (Todd Cerveris) who had an affair with Anne, and Stephen has a conservative, disapproving father
who thinks he is cheating on her.
(Stephen Schnetzer).
As they wait for their next fare, the men loiter, play checkers or gamble, gossip or worry about their future amid plans by the city to tear down their building. Under Ruben Santiago-Hudson’s assured direction and an outstanding cast, each character is memorable. David Gallo’s set, Toni-Leslie’s costumes and Bill Sims Jr.’s bluesy score add to the authenticity.
Jonathan Bank’s direction is elegant and the cast pitch perfect. It seems a shame that musical star von Essen doesn’t get to sing a song or two. As for the play, “Yours Unfaithfully” has both comic and serious elements but doesn’t make a strong impact in either direction.
hanks to Manhattan Theatre Club, August Wilson’s “Jitney,” has finally arrived on Broadway. The work, part of his 10 play century cycle, is set in the station of a taxi service in Pittsburgh’s Hill District in 1977.
“Jitney” is running at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater (261 W.47 St.) until Mar. 12 The Mint Theater is unique in that it specializes in reviving forgotten plays of the past. Its latest production, “Yours Unfaithfully,” was published in 1933 but never produced. In this instance, the Mint’s production is the world premiere.
“Georgie: My Adventures With George Rose” is Ed Dixon’s one-actor play about his late friend, a familiar figure to Broadway theatergoers from the 1960’s to the 1980’s. He was an English comic supporting actor, whose breakthrough performance on this side of the Atlantic was in “A Man for all Seasons” in which he played the Common Man and his last part was in “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” for which he won his second Tony Award. Dixon was starting his career when he was cast in “The Student Prince” with the veteran Rose. The older actor
was openly gay at a time when homosexual acts were illegal. A true eccentric, he kept mountain lions in his Greenwich Village apartment. Rose entertained Dixon with anecdotes about famous theater people, and imitated their voices, which Dixon recreates skillfully. The show turns darker when Dixon speaks about Rose’s death at the hands of the teenage boy he adopted in Dominican Republic. “Life According to Saki,” written by British children’s book writer Katherine Rundell and directed by Jessica Lazar, won the 2016 Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award, the highest honor at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. With funding by the Tambor Foundation, running with the original cast until March 5th at New York Theatre Workshop’s 4th Street Theatre. Saki was the pen name of early twentieth century Scottish short story writer H.H. Munro (1870-1916), who died in battle during World War I. Engagingly played by David Paisley, Munro entertains his fellow soldiers with his stories, which are acted out by the talented company and life-size puppets (by Clair Roi Harvey and Suzi Battersby). It’s ironic that a man who poked merciless fun at his own society with his macabre wit should have lost his life defending it. “Life According to Saki” is a compelling night in the theater. It should have the effect, as it did on this writer, of prompting a re-reading of Saki’s stories.

nly five weeks have elapsed since Trump took power, and what a contrast with the previous administration. The country seems to have been seized by the invisible hand of hysteria and neurosis. In recent memory, never a concentration of angry and vocal citizens has been so strident and quick to gather. In this time of uncertainty, it is always wise to take a deep breath and step to the sideline to better understand what is happening. Are we deluding ourselves with this new administration? Is the threat real? Or are we just venting the seething resentment that has been cementing since the beginning of the Great Recession and, why not, the costly Iraq War? This month’s selection provides reflections on our national and chaotic mental states.

Whoever came up with the subtitle for this fascinating book did an excellent job creating a strong hook. Who indeed would not want to live longer? Contrary to what you may consider, that life is just a game of roulette, the authors claim that you can certainly influence your longevity. To entice you into their secret, they ask, why some people at 40 look like 60, while others at 60 look like 40? The story narrated here deals with telomerase and, more precisely telomeres, which are the capstones at the end of the DNA, whose states mirror the way we treat ourselves. Good telomeres will keep you disease free longer. Translation: your lifespan will be elongated.
In “Wicked City,” one can smell the whiffs of Fitzgerald’s Nick Carraway as he journeys back and forth between New York and East Egg. You can touch Princeton, the Prohibition, the allure of speakeasies with Fitzgerald pouring a scotch, and nudge the fabulously wealthy yawning at thought of attending the next party. From where we stand, the era feels like a distant shore, a fata morgana only made possible by the booming business and new wealth created overnight, the windfall of WWI. In typical Hollywood stories, with the winners come the losers, and not necessarily those who never had, but rather those who tried hard, got there, and walked away on a whim, which, for many of us, reveals a certain disposition towards foolishness. This is where Williams starts her two-time-framed narrative. The story moved from present to past and back and forth. “Wicked City” is a Nick Carraway journey in reverse.
Psychosomatic illness is problematic. Disregarded as not real, it is often not considered seriously and is relegated to footnotes in medical books. And yet, it is all around us, often having debilitating effects on the sufferer, which can last for years in some cases. According to Dr. O’sullivan, it costs the health system twice as much to treat as diabetes. Expensive for imaginary treatment. Who has not heard of someone suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome or sudden memory loss? In this important book, O’Sullivan lays out her case for a new approach and treatment methods for psychosomatic illness. Her argument is convincing. Taken from real life experiences, through her work as a neurologist and neurophysiologist, she shares the cases of some of her patients and ponders how come so many of them complain about symptoms without any physical manifestation? Is it really all in their head?
Sanity can be regained in many ways. While there are those who go to great lengths to analyze a person’s psyche to better penetrate it and spend a great deal of time to suggest curative solutions by trial and error, there are also those who advocate the more expeditive fire-by-fire approach. Divergent psychologies imply different perception and understanding of humankind. This is where Alan Jacobson (a truly underrated author) situates himself. Not that he necessarily believes in the latter approach, but in terms of thriller writing, his willingness to throw his characters into the darkest recesses of the human mind makes his story feel like boarding a hell-train from page one. His new Karen Vail’s novel, “The Darkness of Evil,” is beautifully layered for this reason.
When I first read that Sunim had sold more than three million copies of “Things” upon its release in his native South Korea, I was intrigued. What could make such a quiet book so potent? It did not take long to figure it out. The story how the book came about speaks for itself. Haemin Sunim’s marvelous pages filled with wise advices and aphorisms started on social media, where Sunim, the first Korean monk to teach religion in the US, gave compassionate responses about the pressure and anxiety of daily life. Given the high-octane politics we are going through at the moment, it is not surprising that most of us feel lost or even more stressed or fearful than usual. Sunim speaks to a generation expose to the constant threat of North Korea. For us, his book is a well-timed antidote to most everyday situations, especially as uncertainties reign.
Ella Gilbert starts at the top of society and decides to leave it all behind upon learning that her banker husband cheats on her. She trades her life of luxury and high-comfort in Soho for a small pad of Greenwich village. That’s for the near present. But Williams’s story also is situated in 1924, where the Village was not the ultra-expensive resort for startup moguls of today. Back then there were forbidden places, where more prosaic people could go in search of excitement. The place in question is a speakeasy, the Christopher Club. The club introduces the second protagonist, Geneva Keely, a flapper, who gets caught in a raid and is forced to help the police track down her father, an important bootlegger . . . The story takes its own flight as we ponder how the two narratives are interrelated, making the twists and turns highly entertaining and surprising.
At first brush the book can appear slightly mechanical, since chapters are matched with a single patient. There’s Pauline, Camilla, and Rachel among others. But each has been carefully selected to illustrate precisely O’Sullivan’s claims. The plurality of psychosomatic manifestations run far and wide and would appear to stem from hidden stress and major traumas. Surviving rape or exposure to chronic mental abuses being the most obvious. We’ve known for century that the mind can affect our physical health. But clearly, here O’Sullivan seeks to establish a connection between mind and body that goes beyond simple mood disorder treatment. She advocates for new ways to look, understand and treat unexplainable symptoms, paving the way for bringing relief to her patients. Some of the cases will break your heart. Matthew did it for me.
Here, as in diet books, we find that the main culprits for premature aging: quality of sleep, frequency of exercise, types of diet, and chronic stress, all of which deeply impact our telomeres. Over the book, Blackburn and Epel clearly demonstrate the mind-body connection. Having recurring negative thoughts for example will affect also your telomeres, and your appearance. Telomeres shorten in repeated adverse conditions. People looking healthy have long telomeres. So the main question you should ask yourself, and it should make you want to pick up this book at once, is whether a body who has been exposed to all types of unhealthy habits and physical abuses can reverse damages done to the capstones of its DNA? In other words, are frayed telomeres irreversible? The book goes at great length to provide answers. Particularly fascinating are the chapters discussing the impact of early trauma during pregnancy and income inequalities to show the relations between depression and schizophrenia. One thing is certain: this book will not age you.

Think for a second if you woke one morning and found out your father was a serial killer. What would you do? What would you say? This is what happens to Jasmine Marcks, one of the protagonists. Is it possible to love a father who tortures innocent young women? Can a sadistic killer be a good father? Whose allegiance should a daughter have in mind, the community or her father? No easy answer, no matter who we are. But here the novel addresses the question in an original way. Jasmine, who turned her father in to the police, has written a book about him. But the incarcerated serial-killer father manages to escape and now seeks revenge. Karen Vail must protect Jasmine from her own father. But what is Jasmine now going to do about it? . . . This brisk, surprise-filled twisted ride will drain every ounce of darkness out of you and make you feel like a sober angel.
Broken into eight chapters, each tackling a different aspect of life: rest, mindfulness, passion, relationship, love, life, future, and spirituality, the book gives the themes the impression of overlapping at time. But scientific accuracy here is not the name of the main concern. Each heading is introduced with a short essay followed, in the great Buddhist and Confucian tradition, with pages of quotes, expressing in three or four brief lines, worldly wisdom (some are even lifted from the Bible). The themes are also unified under the mindful nature of the conscious mind that endows the practitioner with a sense of control. Not external control but internal. Indeed, you can choose how you react or deal with a situation, which is not the same as ignoring or finding clever devices to escape it. Agitated or not, you have nothing to lose reading this book.

merchandise. She had experience selling advertising but not in the Pet apparel area. Now she is an expert in both fields. She has recently added pet toys, which you can see when you visit her great website.
Enter Susan Traub, the proud owner of two Portuguese Water Dogs. Little did she realize at the time that her life would change forever, Susan first got Sabrina who was a handful at only three months old. She had dogs all of her life and thought she could handle training a puppy. But no, she was completely wrong. For the first time she had to hire a qualified trainer. The first three days were crazy, constant barking and running. Susan hired Ivan Kovak, and as Susan said, it was the best money she ever spent. Shortly after getting Sabrina under control, entered Darrin the male, who was extremely possessive.
Susan has managed to obtain the license for the FDNY, NYPD, Transit and Taxi services. She alone has the rights to attach these patches to the animal outfits. The training of your pets is one of the best investments you can make, and then of course the well dressed Pet will always be the leader of the Pack. The most important things that your pet can teach you, is to sit, stay and no barking. Susan will be taking her dogs to the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in these new green dress coats on March 17th 2017. HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY TO ALL. royalanimals.com
At this point in Susan’s life, a career change occurred. Susan retired from her successful advertising business, she wanted something new, something challenging and looking at her dogs, she took that leap of faith. Enter The Pet Business. The creation of Royal Animals in 2006 was born. Susan started first with Puff Coats then moved into beds, bowls and healthy treats. She was able to combine her love of Pets and fashion all rolled up into one. Apparel manufacturing is a parallel business to the garment business. Susan had no experience with buyers or selling
