CELEBRATING ART & DESIGN

M

arch represents life, rebirth and renewal as well as Art week with the Armory Show and contemporary art fairs descending upon New York City. For March our cover story is the legendary architect Richard Meier. Though Meier has been an instrumental source of inspiration for contemporary American architecture and has contributed to the NYC skyline with his iconic buildings, he is also a prolific artist. This month Richard Meier will exhibit his extensive body of artwork that spans over 50 years at Sotheby’s S2 Gallery. During his photo shoot at his massive gallery in Jersey City, he walked us through his very personal collages which he has been working on since 1959 which provided a window to his fabled life and brilliant mind. This month we bring you front row and back stage at New York Fashion Week and covered Fall’s hottest trends. Glamour reigned with rich saturated color palettes, bold prints and plaids, and exciting layered textural elements as we highlighted some of the best fashion seen on the catwalk. For beauty, the biggest takeaways we spotted were eyes punctuated with vibrant bold primary colors, dark metallic ombred lips, and natural luminous skin creating a striking modern look. Art meets fashion in our spring fashion editorial, Painterly Pastels, styled by Tanya Tauthong-Kass, where fashion was inspired by the pastel palettes of contemporary art. Our featured destination this month was Norway. This utopian society has it all- stunning untouched natural beauty from the fjords to the mountains, a burgeoning Nordic foodie scene, and cities that are a hotbed for design and art. We highlighted the Nordic cosmopolitan gem- Oslo, ventured to the historically charming Bergen, and traveled to the magnificent fjords and countryside. This is truly a bucket list year round destination. Spring travel was on our mind as we covered exotic weekend getaways such as Barbados, Punta Cana, Bal Harbour and more. Take the time to explore the world while expanding your horizons whether its art, a new neighborhood, or embarking on a new adventure for spring is all about rebirth and renewal while shedding the past.

I guess it’s a sign that I’m moving up the ladder.” His co-stars said the most amusing things. A buff Zac Efron, who’s ready for Broadway said, “I think it’s fine for girls to ask boys out. I actually prefer it.” Your move ladies. Zendaya, who plays Zac’s love interest, explained “I don’t mind if people look at me like I’m crazy. I’m just being me.” Rebecca Ferguson plays opera singer Jenny Lind, stating “I can sing but I cannot SING. It’s one thing to hold a tune and another to sing like the world’s greatest opera singer.” …. Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep star in the media focused film The Post about The Pentagon Papers. ICONS & INFLUENCERS

Political art is a departure; cathartic

While Hawkins’ art has often involved largescale installations, taking a political stance is a “very big departure” for her. “I had to struggle with the idea that I’m about to step forward in a very vulnerable way.” She discussed the project with her husband and five children before going forward. “It did feel cathartic, and terrifying, and brave all at the same time,” Hawkins says. “I think that everyone who lends their voice to this, and everyone who is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse sees it will have that same sort of experience.” But she also felt like she had to do it. “There was just no other direction that I was going to be able to go in my work right now. It was that compelling to me.”

KAREN HAWKINS

Why pink bows

By Bennett Marcus

Reaction to messages from other victims

The Pink Bow Project

A

rtist Karen Hawkins is currently in the midst of amassing 52,000 pink bows.

Her newest work, The Pink Bow Project, is a powerful statement on childhood sexual abuse, a monumental work comprising 52 nine-foot-tall sheer curtain panels, each holding 1,000 pink bows. 52,000 represents the number of substantiated child sexual abuse cases reported annually by Child Protective Services agencies. The massive installation, which opens on April 21st at Gallery Shoal Creek in Austin, Texas, immerses the viewer among the panels, which are hung in every direction. “It’s really meant to not just engulf you in it, but to force you to navigate your way through,” Hawkins says.

My name is Karen. I was ten years old

Karen is in the process of collecting what she hopes will be thousands of voices for an

audio component that will run on a loop. The first voice will be the artist’s, saying My name is Karen. I was ten years old. “That voice will recede back into the crowd and then another voice will come forward, a different person: My name is Jill. I was six years old, and that will recede back and another will come forward,” Hawkins says.

Hawkins decided on pink bows as a single, ubiquitous symbol of girlhood. “Pretty much every little girl at some point or another has a bow that they wear in their hair, and this light pink seemed the most symbolic of a girl’s childhood and innocence, and it’s easily recognizable.”

Women of all ages have left recordings through Hawkins’ web site. “Some of their voices are really strong and powerful and they’re stating it as kind of a matter of fact, and some of them you could tell have a tremendous amount of emotion, they’re a little wavering, a little timid,” she says. “I want to hold their hand. I want to tell them it’s okay.” thepinkbowproject.com

Victim of childhood sexual abuse

Hawkins’s voice message tells her story: she was a victim of childhood sexual abuse, and she is certain that the actual number of annual victims is much higher - 52,000 are only verified cases. “Many can’t be substantiated, or are not believed, or do not come forward until they’re adults,” she says. She did not acknowledge or talk about her own abuse until she was in her 20s. Now 53, Hawkins says, “Most of the women I know who are my age also kept it to themselves as children. So that number must be significantly higher than that in actuality.” bows from Hawkins’ Pink Bow Project

ROCHELLE JACOBS June Jacobs Skin Care By Bennett Marcus

att Hotels worldwide. 2015 was an extraordinary year, with June Jacobs cosmetics launching in Sephora stores across China. Rochelle had to build teams there to make sure it all rolled out smoothly and learn what Chinese consumers want. “Having 200 doors in one country, it’s definitely a different business model.”

When Rochelle Jacobs decided she wanted to join her mother, June Jacobs, in running her skincare empire she prepared and presented a PowerPoint presentation at her formal interview. “My mother said, no,” Rochelle laughingly recalls. “Thankfully, her business partner said When can you start?” This was in 1999, and mother and daughter are now partners in June Jacobs.

She also oversaw a rebranding of the full product line, organizing them into eleven collections based on their benefits, such as hydrating or antiaging and updating the packaging. June Jacobs drives the innovation, and daughter Rochelle takes over from there. “Once we have a product, I am then of course the guinea pig. I make sure everything feels good and does what it’s supposed to do.”

Grew up in the beauty biz

Rochelle’s professional background was on Wall Street, but the beauty business was in her DNA. “I grew up in beauty. My mother has been involved since I was born. I was very involved from being a product tester as a young teenager all the way up until I was actually employed.”

Working with Mom is challenging

Impressed by Mom’s achievements

While working at Viacom, she would stop at her mother’s Rockefeller Center office after work. “She was doing everything by herself, and I was just blown away at how hard she worked, but also at how small the business was and how much potential it had.”

Jumped right in with new innovations

Rochelle was immediately able to translate her business skills to the beauty industry. The year she joined, they set up their own manufacturing facility, June Jacobs Labs, where they make all of their own products. “We stole all the chemists from the labs where they were working, big organizations catering to the L’Oréals and Estee Lauders of the world. And we were such a small

brand, no one wanted to fill orders for us because there was always a bigger run ahead of us.” She found it very exciting. The facility gave them the agility to bring their cutting edge ingredients to market quickly.

More successes launching in hotels & Sephora China

Along the way, Rochelle spearheaded projects that led to the company’s growth, such as entering the competitive spa industry with June Jacobs products in high-end oasis such as Canyon Ranch, Pebble Beach, and in all Grand Hy-

Working with her mother is “horrible half the time,” Rochelle jokes. “She’ll give me a list of let’s say 20 things. ‘Did you do this, where are we with all these different things?’ And then she’ll look at the time. ‘Why aren’t you home with your kids?’”

Charity, family, daredevil

Rochelle is an active board member for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and the Dubin Breast Center at Mt. Sinai. She has two sons, Jake and Luke, loves outdoor activities like skiing and hiking, and is something of a daredevil. “I was in Austria for a wellness summit a year ago and I jumped off a mountain, and it was probably the highlight of my life at this point. I went paragliding. It was so much fun.” junejacobs.com

TUTELA PLASTIC SURGERY

Whether its cosmetic or reconstructive procedures, celebrity plastic surgeon, Dr. John Paul Tutela is an expert when it comes to facial rejuvenation. As we come off the heels of winter and head into spring, now it’s the perfect time for his three pronged approach for a spring refresher. “Now that we are in spring, we are heading to peel season where you can be more aggressive with your skincare to shed the dead skin of winter. It is important to be careful with peels and retinols as you start getting more sun exposure to avoid irritation. My three pronged approach can rejuvenate your face to get every part of it in order” says Dr. Tutela.

26 | resident.com

The first part is aggressive skincare such with a retinol base. The next step is to use fillers that target areas with volume loss which cast shadows on different areas of your face such as your nasolabial folds or under your eyes in the tear trough. This is followed by injecting neurotoxins such as Botox into your forehead, sides of your eyes or in between your eyebrows which blunts the power of the muscles and keeps your wrinkles from getting worse. By keeping your facial muscles from moving too dramatically it keeps the wrinkles on your face from getting worse, and even fades the wrinkles that you already have.” 917.912.1677 Tutelaplasticsurgery.com

Dr. Datta The Go To Super Doctor

Dr. Sukdeb Datta is the founder and medical director of Datta Endoscopic Back Surgery and Pain Center. With 12 offices located in New York and New Jersey, Dr. Datta is easily accessible. This means you can easily get the best care from the man who invented eDiscSculpt surgery for herniated discs. Using their unique eDiscSculptTM surgery, Dr. Datta and his team offer an alternative to open back surgery for patients with herniated discs who are looking for non-fusion alternatives. What makes this so special, is that no back muscle are cut thus maintaining core stability with less risk. There are no metal inserts. Because of this all levels of the spine can be treated. Patients with traumatic injuries, or spinal conditions, cause the disc to lose its normal shape. This allows the “gel” in the center to tear or squeeze out. The “jelly” pushes on the nerves in the spine, which cause intense pain and muscle spasms. With eDiscSculptTM surgery, a small microscope or endoscope is inserted through a small cut in the back.

The specialized instruments only remove the damaged disc jelly, leaving the healthy part untouched. A laser is used to “tighten” the loose disc to regain the natural firmness. The result is no pain and a younger more flexible back. Dr. Sukdeb Datta has been listed on the Marquis’ Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in America since 2002 and has also funded research grants looking into new treatments elevating neuropathic pain. Datta Endoscopic is a godsend to those who suffer with any kind of back issues. T

hereare few times that you encounter greatness, and when you do it strikes you like a bolt of lightning. One of the New York Five, a famed group of progressive modernist architects, the Pritzker award winning architect Richard Meier has left an indelible influence on modern architecture today. Though Meier is best known for his iconic architectural masterpieces and cultural institutions, he is also an acclaimed abstract artist whose broad body work spans from 1959 to the present day. On view at Sotheby’s S|2 Gallery from February 22-March 29, 2018 Richard Meier: Artist, will house over 30 pieces of works comprised of collages, encaustics, and silkscreens to be sold. Ahead of the exhibit, Meier’s cohosted The Art of Food at Sotheby’s with gastronomic powerhouse Claus Meyer where culinary creations were inspired by Meier’s collages. Here Resident Magazine caught up with the legendary Richard Meier at his Model Museum in Jersey City at the Mana Contemporary Art Center. This expansive 15,000 square foot space houses his firm’s broad body of work with large scale architectural models from the 1960’s to the present, Meier’s abstract sculptures and collages along with his personal collection of books and magazines where visitors can experience his complex design process. Perhaps the most personal glimpse to Richard Meier’s life is in his collage where random personal objects collected over the years suddenly become cohesive and take on a new meaning. Like a scrapbook of a life well lived, one of his collages could have a handwritten note from Barbara Walters with a seating card from Bernard Arnault’s dinner, a boarding pass and a coat check ticket as he remembered that party where he sat with Babs

and Hillary Clinton. This artistic side of Richard adds yet another dimension to this visionary’s mind and body of work which few can emulate, lending this icon to greatness. How did you get started in art? Frank Stella was a good friend of mine and I studied painting at night with Steven Green who was Frank’s teacher at Princeton. After class Frank, Steven & I would go out and have a beer together and we became friends. One day Steven said to me, ‘I don’t know why you are in class, you should just go out and paint.’ But I lived in a very small apartment, and I didn’t have any place to paint but Frank let me paint in his studio. When I was making 5’ x 7’ paintings Frank told me there wasn’t enough room for both of us. So I stopped doing the big paintings. I lived in a 2 room apartment and I slept in one room and started doing collages in the other because they were

smaller. And I’ve been making collages ever since. Did you ever consider becoming an artist instead of an architect? There was a very short period of time when I was painting and practicing architecture. I realized that I had to make a choice and I decided to focus on architecture. What inspires you when assembling your collages? I have boxes with envelopes of stuff I’ve collected over the years -- ticket stubs, old photographs, newspaper clippings, place cards, boarding passes, coat check tickets, you name it. These boxes of material may contain things that I collected years and years ago... Revisiting the material is a big part of what inspires me. What do you love about creating collages? The fact that you can work on them over time. As I look around at the collages that are on the wall, I see several that I would like to continue working on and so I will. Do your collages follow the same process as an architecture project? Not at all. Architecture is about creating a threedimensional space that you move through, live in and occupy. It is directly related to human scale and is designed around that concept. With collages, the scale of the work is directly related to the scale of the material... and the process of creating collages is frequently spontaneous. The collages that I produce don’t have to be functional. They can be whatever I want them to be. How would you describe your body of art? I would say they are fragments of stories put together in some

compositional way. When do you know when a piece is finished? Like cooking, if you have something on the stove, it’s finished before it burns. How did you get involved with Sotheby’s? Gary Lichtenstein (silkscreen printer and publisher) and I were working on prints together and Julian Dawes came to see our work. He proposed the exhibition at Sotheby’s S|2 Gallery and we are thrilled with this opportunity.

46 | resident.com

Where do you draw your aesthetic from? Lately, the aesthetic has been the result of creative collaboration -- Gary introduced me to the encaustic medium and it’s a terrific new approach to both collage-making and painting. Working with Gary is a give and take -- we both bring our ideas to the table -- and sometimes we embark upon something only to be surprised by completely unexpected results. Who are some of the luminaries that have inspired you? I admire so many -- Kurt Schwitters, Joseph Cornell, Robert Rauschenberg, Matisse and Picasso…

Are you an avid art collector? I don’t have a very large collection, but most of the work I have is by Frank Stella and by friends like Barnett Newman. Which project was your mea culpa? The Getty Center. It’s an amazing place. Do you use feng shui in any of your projects? No, I do not. When the Getty Center was finished, however, someone did bring in a Feng Shui expert who proclaimed it to be perfectly oriented. I couldn’t

believe it. I knew nothing about it. Then again, some of it may be attributed to common sense -location, light, etc. What are your current projects? We are doing a building on the East side of Manhattan just south of the United Nations and also a building on the West side of Manhattan on 61st Street and the Hudson River. We also have buildings in development in Bogota, Colombia, Mexico City, and Taiwan.

What do you think of the future of the New York City skyline? New York City is ever changing -- the skyline is changing... neighborhoods are changing. It’s extremely interesting to watch where brand new construction is happening versus re-design... and how dramatic architectural changes impact the dynamics of the neighborhoods (or blocks) that have remained largely untouched... the future of New York City’s skyline won’t ever be controlled by one person but there are certainly many who will contribute to it. Architecture is an art form which relates to

the past and hopefully says something about the future. An architectural work is not something that changes rapidly so what is built is very important because people expect to live with it and relate to it for a long time. What are some of the new architectural trends you are seeing today? Everybody is concerned with environmental factors and how architecture takes those factors into consideration, specifically how architecture contributes to the environment.

FINE DINING

BAAR BAAR

INDIAN DISHES WITH A MODERN FLAIR By Jeanine Zelkas | Photos by Liz ClayMAN

I

ndian chef, Sujan Sarkar, following great success at restaurants in India and San Francisco, has brought his modern regional Indian cuisine to New York with the recent opening of Baar Baar. Located in the Bowery, Baar Baar, which translates to Again and Again, features progressive Indian cuisine in a luxurious setting. Highlights of its spacious dining room’s decor include gorgeous vibrant blue velvet banquettes and lovely patterned tiled floors. Elegant touches are everywhere. I especially appreciated the pretty pale pink flowered china and the cute little cast iron pots in which many of the dishes are served. Chef Sarkar’s menu features classic dishes from all over India that he triumphantly elevates with his modern interpretation. He brought fresh oysters to new heights with a granita of guava and chili and a re-

freshing topping of lemon foam; and filled dahi puri with a light burst of ethereal yogurt mousse. An appetizer of warm heirloom cherry tomatoes mixed with delicate mounds of burrata and walnut chutney was delightfully comforting; and gently fried cauliflower with great creamy curd-rice puree and peanut chutney had a nice spicy finish. We loved the creamy baked chicken malai tikka with the crunchy walnut topping, as well as the spicy kick of the duck and foie gras haleem dish. Kashmiri lamb ribs that were soaked in milk, then deep fried, and finished in the oven were tender, juicy and full of flavor. Garlic naan, which is one of the many inhouse made breads, paired well with traditionally prepared butter chicken.

Mention must be made of the extensive and impressive beverage program at Baar Baar. In addition to champagnes, an Internationallysourced wine list, draught and bottled beers, three kinds of cider, varied spirits and fortified wines, are handcrafted Himalayan teas curated by an Indian tea sommelier. Standouts among the creative contemporary cocktails infused with Indian flavors were the hyderabad collins which included young turmeric and the New Delhi sour with hints of rose hips. To end the meal, we happily found room for spiced chocolate mousse with essence of orange, puffed quinoa and almond milk ice cream; and the broken raspberry dessert was a piece of art and something I would go back to again and again. 13 East 1st Street, New York, NY 212-228-1200 | baarbaarnyc.com

Choices for fillings range from: butter, cheese, ham, bacon, various kinds of meat, chocolate, fruits, condensed milk, chocolate with sliced pieces of banana or strawberry, among others.

Nicknamed the “Paradise Coast,” this corner of the Sunshine State is a mecca for fans of playing in the surf and on the fairway. And while warm gulf breezes and early morning tee times are treasures for many, you may also be intrigued by the region’s fabled past of conquistadors, pirates and scoundrels of all types. Galleons laden with gold, silver, gems, pearls, spices, sugar, tobacco, exotic woods and more were on constant route to and from the Gulf of Mexico to the coast of Spain. According to lore, an entire cache of treasure intended for the Queen of Spain—including a golden jewelstudded carriage pulled by a team of gilded silver horses, 41 chests of emeralds and a 74-carat emerald ring set in gold—was lost off the coast in 1713. Ponce De Leon came to Southwest Florida on many occasions, in search of the elusive “Fountain of Youth.” The native Calusa

tribe who originally settled this area fought fiercely to defend themselves from De Leon and his marauding crew. De Leon later died on his ship en route to Havana. Two notorious buccaneers fought each other on Sanibel and Captiva Islands. A fearsome pirate named Henri Caesar stole from legendary swashbuckler José Gaspar when he invaded Captiva Island, where Gaspar held wealthy Spanish prisoners for ransom. Gaspar got even by raiding Caesar’s camp on Sanibel and drove him off the island. Gaspar fled with Caesar’s treasure to a nearby key where he’d built his home, known today as Gasparilla.

border a scenic body of water called Estero Bay, sprinkled with mangroves and tiny islands. In 1719, infamous scallywag “Calico Jack” Rackham and his partner in piracy, Anne Bonny, were shipwrecked by a hurricane on a barrier island at Estero Bay. Rackham and Bonny erected a palm thatch hut on the island that became their private romantic escape. For that reason, it’s known as Lover’s Key.

When his ship Floridablanca was finally sunk in Charlotte Harbor by the American Navy years later, most of José Gaspar’s crew was watching from the shore with twenty large chests of treasure they’d captured. Upon seeing their vessel vanish under water, the crew escaped with the treasure chests in longboats up the Peace River.

If any of these legendary, seafaring figures anchored here today, they’d likely be staying with Royal Shell Vacations. Pirates, explorers and romantics alike were experts at finding the best spots for privacy, relaxation and enjoying the bounty of the local landscape. Now, Royal Shell procures Southwest Florida’s premier private getaway accommodations for visitors like you, enhanced by five-star guest services. Whether you arrive by plane or pirate ship, want fun in the surf or on the fairway, Royal Shell promises you a vacation you’ll treasure.

The Thief

DISCOVER OSLO the nordic gem By Melissa Curtin

O

slo, Norway’s southern coast capital at the head of the Oslofjord is a city so clean, streamlined and safe that while there I dreamt about the possibilities of a city like this in America. Everywhere in Oslo, Norwegians seemed happy with their way of life. They drink fresh water right from the tap, health care is not a worry, and the whole country appears very well off. Oslo is like a best kept secret, one you don’t want to share with anyone for fear of the word

getting out and mobs of annoying tourists showing up.

STAY

The Thief Oslo’s new cultural center was once a haven for smugglers, thieves, scoundrels, and prostitutes in the 18th century. Now Tjuvholmen (Thief Islet) is a modern hideaway where Jay Z, Mariah Carey, Lena Dunham, and other famous Americans have stayed. The hip, luxurious setting on the water is filled with carefully selected designer furniture, The Thief Master Suite global Nordic cuisine, a lavish spa (that you can enter privately from your room through an underground tunnel), and ultra-chic rooftop and library bars. Grand, bold, expensive art greets you at every turn - like a piece in the elevator with moving eyes. What sets this hotel apart is not only the location on the edge of the fjord (in walking distance to all of the trendy eateries and shopping) but the hotel’s atten-

tion to detail, service, room comfort, food, and cosmopolitan design. The staff takes great pride in your personal care, and they make you feel comfortable as soon as you arrive. Room features that made our stay that much better included heated bathroom floors, luxurious down duvet bedding, verbena tea and cookies at night with turndown service, private balcony waterfront views, décor in soft lush rich tones, and rainfall showers. Interactive TVs in each room offer ‘Art-on-Demand,’ themed maps such as Oslo Escape Routes take you on a curated tour of art, design and architecture, and the hotel’s Riva boat is ready to take you around the fjords all summer long. “Escapees” can be brave like a Norwegian and take a dip in the clean Oslo Fjord, or venture next door to the Museum of Modern Art to view Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Barney and many more pieces with your free hotel access ticket. Find tranquility at the spa’s glowing pool, sauna, steam room and hammam/massage treatment area.

a Nordic twist in a warm elegant chic setting. The melt in your mouth fish was a standout of the menu. The Thief features an endless variety of healthy breakfast options, where loose leaf tea and fresh brewed coffee in a personal pot are brought to your table, while healthy juice shots and blended concoctions served in little glass jars were too satisfying. The organic, sustainable, and locally sourced ingredients were the best way to start each day, with options such as bacon, eggs, croissants, beans, cheeses, or fresh yogurt with a myriad of seed, nut, and dried fruit toppings. Hanami This chic waterside Japanese restaurant specializes in the best sushi and robata grilled dishes. Upon entering, we gazed at the King’s boat while devouring endless plates of sushi – like uni, salmon with mango and honey dressing, tuna in truffle soy sauce, and smoked halibut with soy onion sauce and goji. We learned that we were sitting in Jay Z’s seat on his last visit and he had ordered a large sushi take-out for his jet ride out of Norway. Ett Bord This is Oslo’s first true social dining experience – with a long communal eating table that seats 24 people. The lovely owners set out to change the way people eat. Expect a clean sleek setting with farm to table, organic, seasonal, Nordic cuisine. Kolonihagen Frogner Enter through this beautiful white-themed courtyard filled with boho rustic furniture and pass the tiny indoor bar. Dine on nouveau Nordic cuisine “showcasing the full potential of the seasons” like grilled cabbage, potato churros with sour cream and fish roe, deep fried shallots (like an onion ring), and cured duck with a crispy waffle.

Himkok This underground speakeasy in the city centre serves seasonal spirits (aquavit, gin, vodka) which are made in-house. Drinks come with names like Cloudberry, Sage, or the Beta Cocktail (a favorite) – a mix of Himkok vodka, carrot juice, ginseng, grapefruit and a dash of horseradish.

The opera house is said to be built like an enormous glacier sliding or perhaps rising in the fjord. White granite and Italian marble create the illusion of glistening ice. Visitors are encouraged to scale the building’s exterior stairs for unique perspectives of the city as well as head to the roof for panoramic views. An eye opening and timely interactive exhibit on the atomic bomb, its history, and effects was on view, leaving us with a scary sense of the death and disease caused by this horrific act of war. Viking Shi p Museum Learn about the history of preserved 9th century Viking ships that were used as burial coffins, many filled with animals and other offerings. These ancient ships were found buried, with their masts sticking up out of the ground. The first time we found this museum, we took a short boat ride from Oslo Fjord to Bygdøy Peninsula, then walked through the neighborhood, giving us a glimpse of Norwegian life. RALLYE AÏCHA DES GAZZELES DU MAROC

A Unique Adventure for the Modern and Courageous Woman By Elizabeth Darwen

Y

ear after year, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc has been a pioneer, never ceasing to grow, constantly developing and evolving with the times, always faithful to its founding values: courage, the desire to push one’s limits, loyalty, solidarity and social commitment. The 28th annual event will take place between March 16-31, 2018 among the rolling dunes of the stunning Moroccan desert. A unique concept with thoughtful and impeccable execution, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc is the first international off-road rally race of its kind exclusively for women. Since 1990, it has brought together women between the ages of 18 and 71 from more than 30 different countries, who will embark on an adventure of a lifetime from Nice in the south of France on March 16th, 2018 and onward to the beginning of the rally in the Moroccan desert. Each vehicle is equipped with satellite tracking system, powerful enough to provide minute by minute tracking, so even without seeing a vehicle for hours, the women are never alone. By the end of the experience, participants—known as “Gazelles”—have created adventure-filled new memories, deepened their bonds with their teammates, and pushed themselves further than they ever thought they could. The rally also features an electric vehicle cat-

78 | resident.com

egory, with participants called “E-Gazelles.” The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc boasts an ISO 14001 Environment Management System (EMS) certification, an internationally recognized environmental management standard taking into consideration the immediate and long term environmental impacts of an organization’s products, services, and processes. Through the actions of its non-profit, Coeur de Gazelles, the rally also respects its scenic host country and its people. Coeur de Gazelles works on projects that meet the needs of Morocco’s remote populations: medical care, education, the environment and sustainable development, job training for women, improving living conditions, and a desire to spread joy by distributing donations. THE FREEDOM AND PLEASURE OF CHOOSING YOUR OWN PATH The Gazelles’ goal is to drive the shortest possible distance to reach a series of predefined checkpoints. Free to choose their own route, they face a challenge each day: to study the map and the day’s geographical coordinates, analyze the risks and difficulties of the terrain and choose the shortest path. They have the choice of driving around a mountain or crossing over it, driving through the dunes or avoiding them... A COMPASS AND SOME COMMON SENSE Every morning the Gazelles receive a «Road Book». This document contains only the geographic coordinates or headings and distances of the day’s initial checkpoints. Forget about GPS, phones and other modern communication tools: using a compass, a navigational plotter and maps, they plot their route and plan their itinerary.

TO WIN THE COMPETITION The rankings are determined by calculating the extra kilometers driven (distance driven between check points minus crow flies distance) and penalty kilometers for any check points not reached. The winning team is the one that finds the greatest number of checkpoints while driving the least number of kilometers. EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF AFRICA Morocco, host country of the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles since its inception. Gazelles in search of challenging terrain and the great outdoors will be seduced by the magnificent and varied landscapes of Morocco, with its sand dunes, rocky mountains, green valleys, fertile plains, arid plateaus and lush oases. The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc takes place under the High Patronage of His Majesty The King Mohammed VI, who has authorized the use of the Royal Coat of Arms on the Gazelles’ vests. This is the only event that has ever been granted this honour. Many Moroccans come out to welcome and assist the competition at every step of the way, from the dunes of Merzouga to Essaouira. SKI SOULS

Dedicated to Finding Love on and off the Slopes By Jennifer Hedley

S

KI SOULS is a travel company that organizes luxury ski and snowboard trips for single and solo travelers, providing week-long adventures that include hotel accommodations, ski passes, mountain tours, group activities, and skiing or snowboarding for all abilities. Travelers make new friends on the mountain, at group lunches and dinners, and have fun aprés ski. Bruce Berkman and Gundula Brattke were themselves soloers when they met and founded SKI SOULS in 2017. After trying a few travel options for solo skiers, East Germany native Gundula decided to take things into her own hands. Her former careers in Germany’s film industry and New York’s fashion circles taught her a great deal about connecting people, creating unique group experiences, and keeping her eyes on every single detail involved. Her goal was and is to create a luxury first-class winter getaway for adults. As for Bruce, after decades of working long hours on Wall Street he decided to turn his favorite pastime activity into a business. His research obsession doesn’t leave anything to chance and guarantees smooth travel experiences with each trip.

82 | resident.com

Their goal is the same: to connect singles, friends and couples that may ski on different levels to form new friendships and connections with skiers on the same level by providing a stress-free vacation. Soloers and couples who have never skied are also welcome to bond with the group, take a lesson and enjoy activities. Each experience is individually personalized by scouting out each location before deciding to extend to a group. Locations that make the cut include destinations with beautiful scenery, wonderful restaurants and plenty to do.

Hotel, a top-ranked boutique hotel in the heart of Whistler Village. With a brand-new roof-top that includes a hot tub and a pool, the Adara is the perfect spot for relaxation and socializing. Price to book spans from $1600-$2400 and your package includes 6 nights with a full breakfast, a 4 of 5 day lift pass, a guided mountain tour, two threecourse dinners, happy hours, group activities and a group farewell on the last night. Additionally, SKI SOULS will find you a roommate if you opt for a shared room.

Activities on a SKI SOULS trip, aside from threecourse meals at hand-picked restaurants and happy hours, can include mountain tours, tubing, local brewery tours, fat-tire biking and sleigh rides. Trip prices range from $1600-$3400 per person for a 6-night stay. There are currently three annual trips that take place in Colorado and Canada with plans to increase to six by 2019. They would also like to expand to ski destinations in Europe, naming Austria or Switzerland as possibilities.

The final trip of the year, targeting millennials, is to Vail, Colorado on March 24th-30th. Guests will stay at the fabulous Tivoli Lodge in the village of Vail, close to lifts, bars, and shops. The hotel is less than a block away from the new Vista Bahn Gondola, the main access point to Vail mountain. The trip is priced at $3400 for a single room or $2400 for a shared room and includes 6 nights at the Tivoli with a full breakfast, a 4 of 5 days lift pass, a welcome dinner, and a goodbye gathering at a local restaurant.

The next trip, March 4th-10th, will be to Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia. Generation X and Babyboomers will be staying at The Adara

ANTHONY RUBIO Pet Couturier By Jane Pontarelli

innovating shapes and forms which are then meticulously executed and finished only when Mr. Rubio is completely satisfied with the final product.

B

orn and raised in New York City, Anthony Rubio grew up immersed in his Latin culture loving everything from music and cuisine to the elaborate fashions which inspired his colorful palate and evolution as one of the hottest sought after designers to date. Being influenced by the two legged world was a natural for a man who loves his pets . With a formal education in women’s wear design and twenty years of experience and creating and innovating new concepts and techniques, Anthony Rubio had no reservations about delving into the world of pet fashions earning for himself the title of Master Pet Couturier. The pet industry is estimated to be a Fifty billion dollar industry worldwide and offered an opportunity for Mr. Rubio, who is recognized worldwide, to reach into his world of inspirations to create confections that every dog owner in the know wants to possess. His creations are strictly Couture and are considered collectible art inspired by anything from movies to fairy tales and especially by the best women’s wear couturiers of Europe. His masterpieces are born from an almost maniacal obsession to achieve perfection stemming from hours of sketching to

94 | resident.com

Mr Rubio is on the boards of several fundraising organizations and most recently was honored and awarded quite unexpectedly by The Humane Society of New Rochelle for his humanitarian efforts in championing animal adoption. Anthony participates where welcomed to facilitate raising funds and awareness to the plight of animals that have no voices to express their needs or pains to make the world a deserving place for their unconditional love. Mr. Rubio is very dedicated along with his personal muses, twin one year old Chihuahuas Bogie the brunette named after Humphrey Bogart and Kimba the blonde named after a famous anime hero, to help abandoned, lost and abused pets when and how ever they can. The boys have become iconic heroes recognized worldwide for campaigns that have gone viral. It was The Wag Of The Tail, that changed Anthony’s life forever when he rescued an abused Chihuahua that he named Bandit. He developed an interest in creating canine clothes out of necessity. Chihuahuas tend to tremble from the cold and out of concern he started designing jackets and shirts for Bandit. It was for Halloween that he decided to delve back into his design background. On a friends advice, he entered Bandit into a costume contest at a local pet store. I created the most elaborate costume for him embellished in Swarovski crystals. Bandit went as Elvis the King and he actually won. First off, he made the costume complete with bell bottoms and cape out of silver spandex, allowing for flexibility which Bandit loved. He pranced in front of the judges and won their hearts. They went on to other events and people started taking notice of his creations. Before he knew it, dog owners were asking to commission him for their pets. The rest, as they say, is history. Anthony is constantly fascinated with the fashion industry and loves to foresee what is yet to come. He has been told that he is a visionary for that very

same reason. He did not want to create anything you would see everyday. He wanted the challenge of creating something different more spectacular than the last design, especially if he uses non conventional materials. Yes pets are great muses but let me clarify one thing. It is not for all pets. Not all pets are receptive and/or comfortable wearing clothes especially for the sake of fashion. Out of necessity they will wear a coat or sweater, but hats, sunglasses and even foot wear is something that he feels that they must be conditioned to wear at an early age. Anthony Does Not Believe In Forcing A Pet To Wear Clothes”. He does get people wanting to dress their pets, but he conducts an interview process because he needs to know that he is not causing an animal any discomfort or having any part in bringing any misery to them. His designs, on the other hand, are created with great attention to comfort, breathability and safety to the pet. Yes there has been an occasion where he dressed a pet that has never worn clothes and was pleasantly surprised to find that they liked it. Marching into March, Happy St Patrick’s Day!
