WHAT IS POWER?

A

s I began to put this issue together this month, I pondered the question and sought out to find the meaning of power. What I found along the way was a journey of self-discovery. Power comes in many forms from the power of love, the power of letting go, the power of beauty, the power of perception and the power of persuasion. In this issue we were able to interview some of the most fascinating people in the world who are making a difference. We featured rags to riches stories such as a self-made billionaire who started as a janitor at a computer store to the legendary Barbara Corcoran and her journey to become the queen of real estate to one of the most influential investors on Shark Tank. We also had a chance to meet Heide Lindgren, a world renowned model who is using her beauty to effect social change in third world countries. Symbolizing the epitome of status, power and wealth was the stunning $60 Million Baccarat penthouse overlooking Manhattan which served as the backdrop for our spring fashion spread. May is also the month to honor our moms. We delved into the power of healing and beauty for our mother’s day theme with new rituals and beauty treatments to harnessing the power of nature in our beauty regime. Let’s not forget the power of taste and scent as we showcased some of the city’s greatest culinary offerings. Francis Bacon has said, “Knowledge is power.” What I learned from these fascinating icons is that we all possess the power of free will and personal empowerment as well as hold the power to change ourselves. Whether we impart power or submit to it, the power is really in you.

Movies : The Good, The Bad, and The Boring

Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill @ Batman Vs Superman

Jennifer Garner @ Miracles from Heaven

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill is the season’s biggest bore. Affleck, who should have looked in the mirror and stepped aside for a younger Channing Tatum or Chris Pine, said “I get this panicked sense, ‘Is it good? It’s horrible, right? It’s going to bomb.’” Clearly he saw a preview. Ben’s not superhero material and clearly Jennifer Garner feels the same way after she caught him sleeping with the nanny. On the other hand, Garner doesn’t over reach in her family friendly flick Miracles from Heaven. She sums it up saying “You should walk out of this movie feeling inspired and with a sense of hope.” Disney’s Zootopia with the voices of Jason Bateman and Shakira about animals trying to live in harmony is a good choice for the kids. I can also recommend the sci-fi wonderment Midnight Special starring Kirsten Dunst, who confessed “I will do anything with a good filmmaker.” If you prefer your superheroes with a sense of humor, I strongly suggest you see Ryan Reynolds in the thriller Deadpool but I give pass on the dull Allegiant, ditto to the edgy but flawed Hardcore Henry. Need a laugh? Try The Boss with Melissa McCarthy, who mused “People have told me my entire life what I can’t do, bless them. And then I’ll take the core of whatever it is that’s making those people act so crazy and crank it up to 11. I’m quite sure I’ve never seen an epic boob fight in a movie before.”

Monaco Parfums Gucci ambassador Charlotte Casiraghi kept things pumping on the dance floor when she joined her mother Princess Caroline, Prince Albert, and Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld in Monte Carlo. Supermodel Victoria Silvstedt helped INCC Parfums’ President Remy Deslandes launch Monaco, a fragrance for men and women, at a benefit for the Princess Grace Foundation USA at the Crem Club in the tiny principality, Monte Carlo. Others trying on the alluring new frangances were James Davidson, Christine and George Ledes, Princess Grace Award winners Antonia Berasaluce and Lucien Postlewaite. inccparfums.com

FREDERIQUE van der WAL By Nathalie Barclay

A

s Mother’s Day is this month, traditionally a bouquet of flowers represents the sentiment of gratitude and appreciation we feel towards our favorite woman in our life. But what is really the meaning of flowers, so we asked an expert- Frederique Van der Wal, the former supermodel turned entrepreneur and florist, to weigh in on the role of flowers in our lives. New York is quite possibly one of the best cities in the world to live in: its cultural diversity, endless entertainment and reputation as the city of opportunity give it an energy all its own. But where does nature play into this? We have parks, we have squares, we have trees. But does this translate to the home? For former supermodel Frederique van der Wal, it does not: “When I came to America from Holland to start my career in fashion, the one thing I noticed instantly in New York was that no one had flowers around.” While she may not have been known originally for her love of flowers, this passion began at a young age, playing an essential role in her upbringing in Holland. Today, Frederique van der Wal is using her knowledge of flowers to found her own flower company, Frederique’s Choice. The company’s tagline, ‘Live Life in Full Bloom,’ is a fundamental part of Ms. van der Wal’s personal and professional philosophy: “I want to share this way of life, a life where we are trying to connect again to nature and where flowers are more a part of our lives.” Frederique’s Choice is an e-commerce flower company with affordable prices as per this philosophy, Ms. van der Wal believes that flowers should be approachable to all. As a supermodel, she is no stranger to the importance of presentation. From the very beginning, Frederique’s Choice aims to get the best flowers possible, buying the flowers directly from the grower to ensure their freshness. The selection of flowers is also very specific and depends not only on the season, but also on the colors of each season, and even on the color of that month’s Zodiac sign. The presentation of the flowers then becomes paramount to the bouquet’s overall effect: they are packaged in a biodegradable vase and placed inside a tote bag, a clear trademark of Ms. van der Wal’s attention to presentation. Within the home, her view on the role of her bouquets is surprising: “You shouldn’t be afraid to play with flowers!” She encourages people to take out some of the flowers from the bouquet if they want to spread the flowers throughout the house, take a few flowers such as eucalyptus or chrysanthemums and put them in glass bottles. For her, this is not the taking apart of her carefully prepared and designed bouquet, but rather a creation of a series of new bouquets, the end goal always being “to make a happier life by having flowers around.” Frederiqueschoice.com

Marc Bell’s Journey

FROM BATHROOMS TO BOARDROOMS Boca to the Big Apple

M

arc Bell, first and foremost, is a social being who believes in following his passions. “Do what you believe in and always follow your dreams,” Bell said. “My dream was to build data centers, and I did it.”

Bell is one of the rare few people in the world who can declare that they have achieved all their professional life goals yet he has some personal goals as well. “I would love to see every UNESCO site in the world. Of the 1000+ sites, I have seen more than 100.” Bell’s success story started in high school at age 14. Knowing he wanted to work with computers, Bell took the only job available as a janitor cleaning bathrooms in a computer store. Fast forward through an undergraduate degree from Babson College and a graduate degree from NYU, and Bell becomes one of the world’s largest internet providers founding his first company, Globix Corporation, at age 21. 36 • Resident • May 2016

Bell’s empire has grown organically. He acquired General Media, which then acquired FriendFinder Networks Inc. This social networking site eventually became one of the world’s largest website holding companies with more than 600,000 active users and 48,000 websites.

gastronomy has led to a vested interest in LAVO, Avenue and Catch—three of the top hospitality venues in New York City—as well as Broadway productions of Jersey Boys, Fiddler on the Roof, Honeymoon in Vegas, Rock of Ages and many more.

Bell now focuses on Marc Bell Capital, an investment firm with an insanely diversified portfolio that includes venture capital, private equity, finance, hospitality, theatrical, technology, retail, real estate, oil and gas. This all-inclusive strategy has led Bell to invest in a range of businesses, currently leaving him with stakes in over 160 companies around the world. Additionally, Bell sits on the Boards of New York University, NYU Langone Medical Center and Boca Museum of Art among others.

Another passion for Bell is art. He has collected an extensive array of Andy Warhol prints, currently on loan to the Boca Museum of Art. He also owns one of the largest M.C. Escher collections in the world, plus additional works by graffiti artists Alec Monopoly, Mr. Brainwash, Trust Icon, Kenny Scharf, Keith Haring and others.

One of Bell’s current pet projects is taking Dutch watch sensation KYBOE! Global, a brand he fell in love with in Europe. Bell’s love for theater and

In the future, Bell will be busy visiting the other 900 UNESCO sites while his nanosatellite company watches over the world from space.

Veronica Albornoz

By: Haiting tan

VERONICA ALBORNOZ

B

londe, beautiful and bold is exactly how you would describe NBCUniversal Hispanic Group’s National Correspondent, Veronica Albornoz. The mother of two immigrated to the Big Apple in 2001 to realize her dreams of becoming a news reporter and threw herself into work ever since she stepped foot in the country. The reporter claims that it was heritage that tempted her into this line of work. With her father working as a journalist and lawyer, the beauty was exposed to cameras at a young age. Fearless of the camera, Albornoz made her on-screen debut at the age of 16 along with her sister when they starred in a news show featuring celebrities and aspiring politicians. The working mom had previously worked as a weather anchor at Telemundo media but chose to retire for the sake of her children. After giving birth to her second child, she realized that it was time to prioritize her young children instead of her career. However, the massive destruction that Hurricane Sandy brought upon the state lured Albornoz out of retirement. Situated in the midst of the chaos, Albornoz did what every tech-savvy journalist would do, whipped out her phone and started reporting. On her first post-retirement outing, she had the opportunity to interview doctors, family members and injured victims of the Boston Bombing. The Venezuelan beauty states that her show A New Day, a two-time Emmy winning program, which also happens to be nominated for a third Emmy this year, is different as compared to other news programs. Instead of covering trending stories, the Spanish-language program features the face behind the story whether they are boldfaced names such as the actors in Hamilton, or overlooked people from the community who have a compelling story. In the fast page of quick soundbites, Albornoz’s approach is different she digs deep, and tells the human side of their stories along with their ideas in a way that educates the viewer while leaving a lasting impression. The 3 hour program airs at 7am and is targeted at working moms similar to Albornoz. The news program which broadcasts in 20 other countries along with the US, is Albornoz’s gift back to the community. She says that it has given her 38 • Resident • May 2016

the opportunity to give back to society by standing up for her community. Regarding her success in the industry, it was push comes to shove for Albornoz, as she was fortunate with timing as everything simply fell into place when she arrived in the country. However, she states that being a journalist is not as glamorous as its all panned out to be. For her program, Albornoz rises at 6am and runs around the city glamorized from the waist up yet outfitted in sneakers. She wakes up anticipating a new challenge because a work of a journalist never ends, once a story is completed, there is always a new story around the corner. Who knows, her next big story could be on you! twitter.com/albornozvero www.instagram.com/albornozvero

Nunzio Saviano Tucked away in a luxurious Upper East Side brownstone is top celebrity stylist Nunzio Saviano’s namesake boutique salon. Dedicated to placing his customers as first priority, Saviano’s salon holds just six chairs instead of the assembly lines found at big-name salons. Saviano believes that “no two heads of hair are the same,” therefore is insistent to create a chop that is appropriate for his customer’s bone structure. One of the most game changing treatments he brought to the US from Europe is the exclusive Digital Waves Treatment, which is the latest and non damaging way to get that glamorous and voluminous Victoria’s Secret waved hair without styling tools. This treatment takes around 3 hours and uses the same solution as the Japanese hair straightening process, but instead uses a specialized digital curling iron to create customized curls and waves. This dramatic treatment lasts for about 36 months where every morning you can wake up to soft perfectly waved beachy hair without the frizz and all the glamour of a salon blow out with very little effort. Rodney Cutler on the other hand, is a leader of the fashion industry, having a hand in shaping the current trends. His talents have assisted Redken 5th Avenue in becoming a world-wide brand. The pairing of Rodney Cutler’s downtown sensibility and trendsetting style with Louis Licari’s uptown sophistication allows Licari Cutler to strike a balance of the two. Upon entering his private office, 900 5th Dermatology, on the Upper East Side, you are greeted by an immaculate and airy modern space filled with a professional and helpful staff, not to mention an alluring product boutique replete with Dr. Gross’ award-winning skincare line. Dr. Dennis Gross makes healthy and vibrant skin attainable by first evaluating and learning about your immediate concerns and objectives. He believes in a personalized approach and prescribes a plan, along with a skincare regimen with specific product recommendations that maximize in-office treatments. His philosophy of achieving a youthful and healthy complexion through non-invasive treatments is a refreshing and logical approach. Rather than creating a controlled injury to the skin with aggressive treatments, which are inflammatory and require down-time, Dr. Gross takes a more unique and consistent approach by combining different laser therapies and injectables and fillers that work synergistically. Combining multiple lasers with chemical peels for example, not only spur collagen formation and cell regeneration but create an immediate radiance and even skin tone in a less intrusive way. Dr. Gross does not buy into beauty trends and celebrity-driven procedures, rather focuses on a select number of lasers and devices that he has thoroughly researched and believes to be most effective. The results are anything

but spectacular. His newly launched cutting-edge service, the 3D Collagen Treatment, combines two state-of-the-art lasers that work in synergy utilizing different energies to smooth and firm, resulting in a natural luminosity, while at the same time providing the long-term result of stimulating new collagen production. Most renowned for his chemical peels, which Dr. Gross developed and patented, they are sought out by his loyal clientele and patients from around the globe. The extensive peel menu addresses every possible skin type and concern and has been updated with the most innovative addition, the Pro Retinol Peel, a three-step peel utilizing a cocktail of Alpha Beta Acids and retinol which effectively exfoliate and prompt cell turnover. Extend the life of your treatments with carefully formulated at-home products from his high-quality and esteemed product line, Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare, which boasts superior formulations that keep a healthy glow without irritation. The Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel, his hero product, garnered much recognition and praise for its exfoliating properties and glowing results. dennisgrossmd.com

“LIFE IS EITHER A GREAT ADVENTURE OR IT’S NOTHING.” – Helen Keller

T

his is a mantra that supermodel Heide Lindgren seems to live by. From the time she started modeling as a teenager, this Boca native has been on a non stop adventure taking her to all four corners of the globe where she uses her influence and modeling prowess to effect change in third world countries. A free spirit and humanitarian, all of her energy is focused on helping the less fortunate from spearheading charities to empowering locals with jobs to develop skills, and self sufficiency, to promoting brands with a social conscious. Here Resident catches up with the dynamic and gorgeous Heide Lindgren on the panoramic Jimmy atop the James Hotel in Soho with glorious views over downtown Manhattan and beyond. Q: Can you tell us more about the charity that is closest to your heart?

community. She partnered up with women from the community and began a cultural liaison so we didn’t step on anybody’s toes and made sure everything is done the way they like to do things down there, so it wasn’t people rushing and telling you how to do things. Through the non-profit we were able to found a for-profit Haitian company that is now self-sufficient. So I travelled down to Haiti three summers now, with a school called English in Mind, one of the only free adult English schools in the community down there. In the mornings when we weren’t in class, we would travel around and visit with different organizations that had been getting started in the Haitian community. I came across Rebuild, they’d been making flip flops for about five years at that point. I fell in love with their mission and just everything that they stood for and the work they were doing in the community. I said I really wanted to help but I didn’t know how so I said why don’t you let me design you a cuter sandal rather than just a flip flop because we don’t wear flip flops in New York right? Design something that you can go to brunch with, go to castings with, so that’s how it started and then it just turned into family relationship. Q: What are some of your summer plans?

Lindgren: The charity I work with is called Rebuild Globally, which was founded after the earthquake in Haiti. Originally, the founder, Julie Colombino, went down to help out with their disaster relief. Basically during that process, we kept hearing we don’t want aid, we want jobs. So she took it upon herself to found Rebuild Globally which started with a sandal company to provide jobs for the

Lindgren: I actually just found out that I would be traveling to Honduras and Nicaragua with a company called Rice Bowls. I’m definitely going to go home to Florida see my family and check in with them. I really haven’t spent a ton of time out in the Hampton, I’ve been out a couple of times but I would love to go explore it some more.

Q: Who are some of your favorite designers? Lindgren: Deux Mains is obviously one of my favorites, the sandal company. But I also really love Article 22. They turn bomb shreds into gorgeous jewelry and I really love their story and mission. I really love Sasa designs, they work with deaf women in Kenya. It’s really a beautiful and wonderful mission they have there and they also create beautiful products which is important. You can have a great story but if you’re not creating an amazing product then people aren’t going to buy it. Koopels has some really beautiful lounge wear, while Raven + Lily also does an amazing job. Q: A lot of your clothing looks like it has a story behind it for the greater good. Lindgren: When we were doing impact garden that was our absolute goal. To have each one of the brands with a purpose beyond just a profit. We made sure to bring that together. Q: You sound almost like Angelina Jolie, like a goodwill ambassador. Lindgren: I just pinch myself everyday, I can’t believe I get to live the life that I live. I can’t understand living life where you don’t pay that forward or you look bad in some way. It just doesn’t make sense to me to be any other way. Q: What campaign are you working on? Lindgren: Workwise, I told my agent not to call me for six months because I was so obsessed with this

event and making sure that the inaugural kick off was a winner but I’m actually going to London next week. I’ve got a new agency over there so I’m going to be visiting with clients next week and getting started in London again so that will be exciting. Q: So you’re living bi-continentally? Lindgren: Yes. I spend a lot of time over the Atlantic Ocean. Q: What are some of your favorite places in New York? Lindgren: I am in the process of moving. I’ve been on the upper west side for a while now, so I’m exploring downtown now and checking it out. I lived here 10 years so I definitely know it. When you’re not in the midst of it, it’s kind of unfamiliar but I love Locanda Verde it’s one of my favorite restaurants in the Greenwich Hotel. I love to go dancing but I don’t go often but every once in a while I hit Up and Down to get my dance on, they always have good music. I also love to hit Central

Park, I’m such a nature girl, as well as going upstate to Cold Springs to go hiking. Q: How long are you going to be in London for?

Masters in occupational therapy. I’d love to work with older people and help them rehabilitate themselves and get back to their normal lives from whatever situation they were in before.

Lindgren: Just a week. We actually have our annual fundraiser in Orlando for Rebuild Globally so March has been a packed month for us. So right after London I’m going to head to Orlando to get ready for that.

Q: Where are you from originally?

Q: Is there a place that you haven’t been that you would like to go to?

Q: Are there any other projects you’re working on?

Lindgren: Yeah I was actually saying this morning that I’d love to go to Turks and Caicos and Tahiti. Q: Post modeling, what are you thinking of doing? Lindgren: I actually just applied to Columbia, so waiting to find out if I get in. I am looking to go into their School of General Studies and study Psychology with the intention of finally getting a

Lindgren: Boca Raton, Florida. So I’m going to see some of my family at the fundraiser which will be great.

Lindgren: We’re already talking about round two for Impact Garden but I think we should probably hold off on that and the details for now but we’re really looking forward to doing it again. We got really great feedback and everybody seem to have a fun time. I think that really great connections were made which is kind of the purpose of what we were going for. Obviously we wanted all the brands to have sales but the connections and the exposures that you can get were amazing in a venue like MSG. They were so kind and wonderful and so great to work with so we definitely have to try to make sure to live up to that in our next event. Q: How did you team up with Angela Lindvall? Lindgren: I just met Angela. It was so fantastic that she came out for this. It was kind of amazing to see how much of her life just kind of intertwined with what we were doing and what we believed in from the wellness aspect to the environmental aspect to the fashion aspect of things. She just completely embodied everything Impact Garden was seeking to achieve. So we were really thrilled she was able to come out and teach that class for us. Q: How would you describe your personal style? Lindgren: For sure laid-back. I don’t like to put a lot of effort into it. I usually like to keep it cool and comfy but with a little bit of sexiness in there for sure. I’m not cutesy at all, I’m not a bows and headbands kind of girl. Q: What was your favorite campaign that you’ve done? Lindgren: Oh Guess for sure! My favorite one was the Marilyn Monroe ad that they shot at the airport and one of my favorite shots was where I was on the airplane wing. Heidelindgren.com

W

hen Barbara Corcoran walks into a room the entire place lights up. Her larger than life personality and charisma is only matched by her effervescent energy that touches everyone. With her self effacing honesty to her strong intuition and drive, luck and life’s destiny have shaped Barbara into the success she is today. Here Resident spends some time with the Shark Tank dynamo in her gorgeous Park Avenue aerie as she opens up about her successes and failures, dishes on her costars, muses over her investment choices, and reflects on what really makes her happy. 70 • Resident • May 2016

Q: We know about your past and everything, you started with nothing. Corcoran: Now I didn’t really start with nothing. I had the luckiest break in the world, I was a diner waitress and the right guy walked in and gave me a ride home and six months later he said you’ll be great in real estate. I didn’t even think of real estate on my own, someone else came up with that idea. Lucky for me, he offered me a $1000 for 51 percent of the interest. So that’s not starting with nothing, probably a million people going through life hoping

for a break but will never see anything like that. So I didn’t have rich parents but if I did, I wouldn’t be aggressive, I wouldn’t be insecure, I wouldn’t be hungry so that’s lucky too. I really did have a number of lucky breaks through my whole career. I think luck finds me and I find luck. I feel like if there’s luck it’s going to happen to me and it usually does and I ignore the bad things.

Q: Did you financially feel that you sold Corcoran too early? Corcoran: A lot of people ask me that. Remember

I signed the contract to sell Corcoran Friday night before 9/11, another piece of luck. They were in a contract, they would have loved to dump that contract but it was signed, sealed and delivered so we closed roughly two months later. Now people would say you could have sold it for so much more but I say certainly you could, the company continues to grow, I knew it was going to continue to grow, it was poised for tremendous growth, it was in perfect condition, I knew that’s what I was selling and that’s why I got a very good sales price. But sometimes people say, I hear that they’re making 10 times the amount of money don’t you wish you hadn’t sold it? No because I’ve had this very rich career since, and had I even gotten 10 times more money, it wouldn’t have changed my life. What would I do differently? I’ve got plenty of money, more money I’ve ever dreamed of, so what would I do? It would complicate your life, because money complicates your life contrary to belief I’d still rather have it but it complicates your life, comes with a lot of complications.

Q: Between Corcoran and Shark Tank there was time in between. Corcoran: I’ve been doing Shark Tank for seven seasons and I sold Corcoran 13 years ago so in the six years I was a real estate expert on First Fox, then I was a political expert on Fox because that was the only job I could get even though I didn’t even know who the President was. At least I ended up getting a gig on Good Morning America and then I turned that into The Today Show as the in-house real estate expert and that provided very good living for all those years and that’s how Shark Tank found me and asked me if I’d be interested. But i have to tell you the hardest chapter of my entire life was the two years following Corcoran because I had no idea how closely my identity was tied into that company. I used to get up in the morning and now know what clothes to wear. I took my 11 bright red suits, that were my trademark, boxed them and sent them to Dolly Herman right away and then I realized that I had nothing to wear to get dressed up but it was like finding who you were independent of the business. It was very much a part of me but it was a difficult journey those two years. All the friends that you have on the rolodex, the minute you don’t have the power beneath you, the truth in the matter is that people don’t return your calls. That was an eye opener for me. I thought

I had great influence in me but the influence was because I was standing on a powerful firm, once I was alone and no longer the real estate expert everything changed. I didn’t know what to do with myself. I took one cooking class because I love pasta.

Q: What was your favorite company that you met from Shark Tank? Corcoran: Cousins Maine Lobster founded by two drop dead gorgeous guys from LA who were so good looking and charming, I didn’t care what they were selling, I was in. They’re doing so well, with 17 franchises now, which was my idea to turn this single weekend truck into a franchise. They have an online shore to door lobster business and just opened their first restaurant last month in LA. They’re still so good looking and they constantly send me photos of all of us together and they airbrush my face so I look exactly their age now. They’re like the perfect storm.

Q: What’s the biggest failure that you invested in? Corcoran: It was a gourmet cat food business and the entrepreneur was so enthusiastic about cats but I hated cats so I should have that it was a bad sign. After I invested in the business I never thought to see if cats actually liked the food, they hated it, not a single cat would eat that food and we were out of business in three months.

Q: In terms of people versus products, how do you decide which companies you want to invest in? Corcoran: I have to believe the product is sellable at the price that they are quoting, and that there are enough people that want to buy it. That being said the rest of the 95 percent is how much I believe in trusting the entrepreneur. Sometimes I don’t even listen to their words, I’m just zoning out on set and trying to size them up in that sense and see if I trust them and if I get that great vibe, I go in. It’s funny on the few times I vacillate, I try to figure out what is it about them, what if I took my kid Kate, threw her into their arms and come back in five years, would Kate be ok? If I can’t picture her being ok, I’m out right away. I give some other reasons of why I’m out, not because you can’t take

care of my Kate during a war but that’s my ambivalence test.

Q: What kind of advice would you have for a budding entrepreneur? Corcoran: Do it right away. I mean what we’re taught today is to analyze, come up with a great idea, I say run out of the gate and just try the damn thing. The first thing 99 percent of entrepreneurs miss is they ask their friends and family what they think about it but never ask anyone with a check to pay for it. And if they did, they find out whether they have a deal or not. But you just have to do it when you’re young before you have the mortgage and the kids.

Q: What’s your biggest life lesson? Corcoran: Attitude is 99.9 percent of everything. If you have an attitude that you will find an opportunity, you will find it. If you have an attitude you will jump over a hurdle. When it hits you in the head, you will find a way to jump it. If you don’t have optimism, you’re never going to make it in the business.

Q: How would you describe each of your costars on the show? Corcoran: Kevin is the sweetest guy in the world, he is a wonderful actor so he plays the bad guy but in essence he’s a sweetheart and a pushover. The one best line about Kevin, when his wife Linda walks onto the set, he shakes at the knees visibly. He is afraid of her. Mark Cuban is the tallest guy on the set and all the other guys hate him for that. He’s also got the billions while everyone else has the millions so there’s a big difference. Robert Herjavec, he is very high maintenance, you would swear he is the woman on the set. He is very particular about his clothes, antsy all the time, chatty. I always feel like I have female company when he’s on the set so that’s nice. Lorie, she’s the best merchant on Shark Tank. She can make a product and slam it home better than anyone else. Damon is a sweetheart, filthy sense of humor, keeps us laughing the entire time on Shark Tank. He is the most people smart of the whole cast. I’ve jumped into a couple of deals that Damon said to me don’t trust that guy and I

think I’m great with sizing people up but he was right. I lost my money both times. He grew up in the ghetto, you learn to be street smart. He is the most street smart out of all of us because he had the hardest time growing up. He is also a chick magnet. You go anywhere with Damon and there must be a radar in the universe where women within 30 sq miles are there within five minutes.

Q: What is your favorite part about the show? Corcoran: The favorite part of the show is after the show, I enjoy the aftermath of Shark Tank working with the good entrepreneurs, having the satisfaction of seeing how well they do and feeling like you’re a part of it. I like the aftermath probably 10 times more than I like the performance aspect of the show because on the show I’m nervous on my seat and every episode I’m spending a lot of money and you have to make those decisions quickly. Each time I wonder if I’m wrong so it’s a lot of stress. Whereas after the show, they are on my timetable. I can figure out how much time I want to spend or if I want to back off from a deal immediately. When someone starts feeling sorry for themselves, I’m out. It takes maybe only three months after they’ve been a hit on shark tank to see that happens. The minute the entrepreneurs starts blaming others rather than I screwed up I’m out of there. I may have given them my money, signed the contract, but I don’t spend any more time with them, it’s a total waste of my time. If somebody takes time feeling sorry for themselves, I know that they’re never going to make it.

Q: Who else do you spend a lot of time with? Corcoran: My most profitable investments, and then I have to say Cousins Maine Lobster, my second most profitable- I spend my most time with them because they’re so good looking. The most profitable business I have is Grace and Lace- a women’s very sexy, lacy garment business. I would have never seen myself in a garment business but the husband and wife are phenomenal, I spend a lot of time with them. Both are great business people. I love Kim from Daisy Cakes because she’s such a charmer, so good on air. Her business profit is smaller than the rest but when she’s on air, the room lights up so I realize the commodity I have here. Pork Barrel Barbecue sauce, I spend a lot of time with those guys mostly because I think they have a unique marketing advantage. One of the partners looks exactly like a pig. I realized it that day on the set. I realized what a marketing advantage, managing a barbecue brand when there’s 50 million 74 • Resident • May 2016

brands out there but nobody looks like a pig. I spend a lot of time with him because he’s got so much potential.

Q: Are you able to connect any of the brands? Corcoran: Let me tell you something, they’re all close friends and that’s what I do better than any other shark. I made a family of all my people. I kind of pick out the same cut people, they’re all good people, honest and really hardworking and I take all of my successful entrepreneurs on a retreat every year, somewhere in the US or Mexico. They have their own board, they lean on each other, get compassion from one another, they exchange ideas not just on the retreat but in life. We have so much fun, drink way too much so they fall in love with each other.

Q: What are your favorite places in New York City? Corcoran: I don’t go very far in New York, I have two kids, I’m at home a lot, I don’t have enough time with them as it is. I bike most mornings at Central Park around that big loop, I eat at restaurants within three blocks, and when someone invites me downtown I pretend I’m sick. I know that most of the good stuff is around there.

Q: So what are your hobbies? Corcoran: I only have very few because I lack time but I really like what I have. I bike tremendously, ski and swim in the ocean that’s it. I always meant to learn to surf, I’ve been talking about it for 10 years but it ain’t going to happen now I realize. I’ve been learning how to snowboard, took one lesson and gave that up. I stick with the three that I love.

Q: Your favorite designers? Corcoran: Narciso Rodriguez because he cuts a dress that looks good on anyone. I don’t care if you’re a hippy, flat chested, big chested, his dresses look great.

Q: At the end of the day, what really makes you happy? Corcoran: I would say, right on top of my list, what makes me happy is change. I love change. I love change from changing the tulips on the table to finding a new plate for dinner on Friday nights to whose business am I going to invest in to are we going to move? I like anything that has a radical amount of change. I also love people. Give me change and people and I’m going to be happy.

What do you think sets you apart from your peers? Simply, following through on what I say I’ll do. You have to be the whole package. You cannot have deficiencies in your pitch, ever. We are dealing with multi-million dollar properties. You HAVE to be on your “A” game. One of biggest mottos that I harp on with the team is ‘preparation and presentation’ Prepare the night before for a big meeting/pitch and always be prepared for pitching clients on your regular day-to-day dealings. It sounds so simple but you’d be surprised how many agents don’t do it. It’s no wonder why 86% of all agents quit within their first 6 months. No one wants to prepare and do the hard stuff. The sale/pitch starts from the MOMENT you make eye contact with your client or say your first hello on the telephone. Make it memorable, be punctual, be prepared, greet them with a warm and sincere

smile, know your elevator pitch inside and out & the rest will fall into place. Being Managing Partners of “The Serhant Team Los Angeles” I know we have the BEST product, offer the BEST service, and are a part of the BEST brand.

Do you have any advice for Buyers? It depends if the buyer is buying a primary residence, second home, or an investment property. But at the end of the day do your research and simply don’t be afraid to pull the trigger. Too often people are making their largest decision when purchasing their home. People are often afraid of making the ‘wrong’ decision. Let me make it easy for you…

pull the trigger, you will be just fine. It’s not a guarantee, but very rarely will you be on the wrong end of the stick. Real estate will continue to appreciate. They go into the “what if this is not the right decision?” mode. Relax, live a little. How many times have we made decisions good and bad in our lives and yet things work out. They ALWAYS work out if you keep pushing forward. Sometimes a good decision turns bad & sometimes a bad decision turns good. Don’t stress and move forward. What is meant to be, will be.

What was your career prior to becoming a broker? I’ve been an entrepreneur my while life and have

FAILED my whole life. But the experience, knowledge, and connections I have made over the years while failing is allowing me to rise above and succeed on a massive level. I knew I was going to end up in real estate since I was 8 years old. But to answer the question, before I jumped two feet into the Luxury Real Estate Market in the Beverly Hills Market, I was dabbling in acting. Earning some more credits and getting into directing/producing later in life is still on my bucket list. I ABSOLUTLEY LOVE what I do and what I’m a part of.

What do you love the most about your job? Being able to marry Real Estate and TV. I’m literally living the beginnings of my dream. Ryan Serhant has given me the opportunity to live it out. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be where I am today this early in my career. He’s a standup guy that works harder than anyone I’ve ever met in my life, that’s EXACTLY why I wanted to work with him. I don’t give many people credit for what they do, but Ryan Serhant is one of those guys that DESERVES the credit. He is the whole package and is hitting a grand slam in New York. My goal for our team is to be the Number 1 team in the Los Angeles Market within 3 years. I know we will do it and I know Nest Seekers International is going to help me with that. Very Special Thanks to our CEO, Eddie Shapiro!!! Much love to you!

He’s one of three entrepreneurs I aspired to work with (The other two being Donald J. Trump and Mark Cuban). I’ve been looking for a ‘home’ for my talents and Nest Seekers International/ The Serhant Team are giving me the opportunity to shine. Our team is growing and I’m SO proud of them. In our first 4 months together we have sold almost $15m in real estate, have amassed just over $30,000,000 in active listings, and already have one of the records for highest price per foot in Santa Monica at almost $2500/ft which is just INSANE! I’m so excited for the rest of the year and the years to come. I’m only dreaming of where we will be in the next 10, 20, 30 years. By the way, we are looking to bring on a few quality agents to the team. MUST be team players and check their ego’s at the door. Feel free to apply.

hen it comes to a major remodeling project, Debbie Travin sees the big picture to help her clients create their ideal living space and dream home. As she grew up in the world of haute couture accompanying her family on business trips to Italy to purchase men’s luxury fashion, she always had an innate sense of style and a keen eye for color. She takes a practical and systematic approach and can tackle event the biggest challenges. Later in life while remodeling her home in New York, Debbie noticed that when her architect did house showings, people always wanted to know who the designer was. When her three kids got older, Debbie decided to study interior design at the New York School of Interior Design. Now she runs a successful interior design firm in the city, DLT Interiors. Join me as Debbie shares her excitement of being an interior designer in New York.”

What is it Like to be an Interior Designer in New York City? “I think it’s phenomenal! I’m in the best city in the world for interior design. I can’t think of a better place. It’s packed with people who need interior designers. There is new construction, gut jobs, as well as pre-war buildings which usually require Complete renovation and redesign. I love the architectural details of pre war buildings. Then

classmates. I learned a lot about the history of interior design and the different stylistic periods. I felt I could already do the real hands-on design work. This gave me confidence that I could go out and do this on my own. I learned a lot about spatial planning which is key. Plus, learning how to mix different materials to create a balance aesthetic. Studying at NYSID really expanded my knowledge.”

Do You Have a Favorite Design Style?

there are duplexes and brand new buildings with gorgeous floor to ceiling windows. It runs the gamut which makes it always challenging and exciting. And I love the people!”

What Did You Learn at Interior Design School? “When I went to school I was more experienced than my peers. I ended up helping a lot of my

“I hate to pinpoint my style because I work with them all. I don’t want to be narrowly categorized as a designer who just does this or that type of design. Everyone has their own design style and I really want to cater to my client’s look. For my own personal design style I’m more transitional. I don’t care for sleek, ultra modern decor which feels cold and uninviting to me. I want my interiors to feel warm and welcoming where you feel you never want to leave. On the other hand, I don’t like it to be heavily traditional either. I prefer clean lines and a fresh aesthetic.”

Which is Your Favorite Interior Design Magazine? “Architectural Digest. AD features a lot of celebrity homes. I’m curious to see how they live and am always very surprised that it’s not always so fabulous. It seems like a lot of celebrity homes are really not

the same time which means they are there full-time. They get the project finished on time and with really high quality. I don’t see that in other contractors.”

Why Is it important to Create Timeless Spaces? “I think it’s very important to create timeless spaces. Designing an interior is a costly endeavor which is why I try to make sure it is going to last 10 to 15 years. That’s when everything seems to change. I create a neutral palette without anything too trendy in the main furniture pieces and then I accessorize with accent pieces that have color or some trendy pieces that can be changed easily.” up-to-date. client this is the price from start to finish. It’s not going to change and it will be a complete project at the end.” Also, they can call me and I am available to them 24/7. I want them to have a very enjoyable, positive experience.

How Would You Design a Celebrity’s Home? “ I would design a celebrity home just as I would my clients home which is to bring out their lifestyle and personality. If they had a special interest such as a big record collection, I would showcase it. That’s what a home is supposed to be. It’s about the person who lives there. You can really tell a lot about someone and who they are by the interior design of their home.”

What Are the Dangers if You Don’t Have a Designer? “There are several dangers. Most people can’t make good decisions, or they can’t edit it down, or they freeze half way into the design and the project never gets finished. They could make spacial and scaling errors and end up buying

Where Do You Do Your Sourcing? “I use the trade resources in New York City. The New York Design Center and the Decoration & Design Building which have every fabric. Wallpaper, lighting and furnishings resources imaginable to the trade. I live on the upper east side so I go there just about every day. Everything I do is custom and unique to my clients. I am also always looking online for new sources. It could honestly take hours to find the perfect lamp.”

Are Designers Changing the Way You Said You Have the Best Contractors They Charge for Their Work? designers in the past used to have an hourly in the City - What Sets them Apart? “Interior billing rate. I never did that, and never thought it “I definitely believe that I do! When my clients hire their own contractors, there are always some problems and they take forever! When I tell my contractor I need it done in X amount of time, they make sure it gets done. They don’t take on other projects at

was fair. If I put myself in my client’s shoes, I wouldn’t want to be paying continually for hours spent. What I do, and I’m finding is true for most designers now, is to charge a flat fee. I’ve been doing this since day one and it has worked like a charm. I can tell a

something that is too big or is of the wrong size so the room doesn’t flow well. There are a crazy number of things you need to get right; the selection process is quite overwhelming. What do you think sets you apart from your peers? We have a combined experience of 34 + years in NYC real estate focusing on both residential, commercial, sales and leasing. Prior to being brokers at TOWN Residential we owned our own brokerage firm for 10 years. That experience gave us the unique opportunity to oversee and be part of 9,600 transactions and build an extensive personal and professional network. We bring an unpresented amount of experience, passion and care to every deal.

Do you have any advice for Sellers? The 3 biggest mistakes for sellers are: choose a real estate expert not a friend to sell your home. Be open to having your broker stage your home as this is a crucial part in the selling and marketing process. The biggest mistake sellers are making today is bringing their property to the market a too aggressive and asking prices, which causes the seller to chase the market down. Ultimately resulting in a lower sales price.

CLAUDIA: As an agent and as an entrepreneur, I see success in real estate come to those who are able to focus on their niche, and who are able to understand how people in New York live and why they live here. When people move into the city, they have a choice of the lifestyle they want to live. That’s why I started “The {New York} Life,” my lifestyle blog, to explore all of the different ways to experience New York. I love that people are excited to read about my take on the New York lifestyle: my career, mommyhood, fitness—all those things that make up my days, just like so many other New York women.

An Inside Look With

DEBBIE BAUM

W

e sat down with Debbie Baum, Lic. Associate Real Estate Broker and a member of The Corcoran Group’s elite President’s Council, to learn her tips and tricks for selling real estate, connecting with her clients, and giving her business her all. Business aside, we also snagged some fashion do’s and snack picks to keep energy up and productivity at its best.

Q: What is your key to success? A: Truly caring about my clients and working 24/7 (well, almost, a girl’s gotta eat, right?). There is a gentle side to me, and I am not high pressured, but the minute my client says, “I want this”, I am a like

86 • Resident • May 2016

a lion that will not let go. I’m always honest with clients, 100 percent. That’s most important.

Q: What compelled you to go into real estate? A: Three things: I was traveling frequently—Europe at least 6 times a year and then around the US doing fashion shows and events. I didn’t want to be away from my young daughter that much. I also had attained my goals in the fashion world. I was president of the US arm of a European fashion house and built the business into a multi-million dollar brand with distribution in the finest department and specialty stores. It was through my experience in growing

that brand and my love of cultivating startups that allowed me to realize that I could build a successful business within the real estate industry. Lastly, I was seeking interesting work that I could stay in as I aged—as long as I have all my marbles and can totter around, I’ll keep going!

Q: What does an average day look like for you? A: I wake up at 7, hit the blackberry at 7:01, commit to 30 minutes of morning exercise, eat a healthy breakfast (my Daughter the Health Coach makes sure Mom eats well!), run back and forth between showings and the office, take in a concert at Carnegie

Hall or a movie or show, head back home and work on the computer until about 1am, and then enjoy a few hours of shut-eye. Somewhere in the middle of all this, I find the time to serve on the Advisory Board of ACC (Animal Care Centers of NYC.) It is an organization very near and dear to me.

Q: What are your go-to snacks for getting through the day? A: Unless I have snacks on-hand, I may get a migraine. That’s why I am always stocked with healthy snacks and try to eat every couple of hours. There are times when I am out with international buyers or out-of-towners for three consecutive days, showing up to 15 apartments a day, so I’ll stock the car with protein bars, nuts, waters, bananas, and other healthy snacks.

Understanding and applying this logic to real estate allows me to appreciate the industry and provide my clients with invaluable insight to market trends. With my personal style I often mix and match classic and timeless items from twenty years ago, like Perry Ellis silk printed blouses and Donna Karan cashmeres with new Alice and Olivia suede leggings, Dolce Jackets, The Row leather leggings and Gucci furry clogs. I love jackets and always pick up a new Chanel, Oscar de La Renta, or Armani every season. I also enjoy more casual looks too, like J brand jeans, BCBG blouses and a comfortable, Aqua cashmere sweater. Because I am on my feet so much, heels are out! Slip on, laceless flats are ideal for easy removal when walking on gorgeous carpeted or hardwood floors.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of a home?

A: The people make the home.

Q: What was it like making your first big sale? A: Exhilarating. My first mega sale happened around nine years ago when international buyers found me on the Corcoran website. This was during a time when buyers would search through individual sites. They stumbled upon my profile, liked what they saw, and decided to reach out. Luckily, my last name starts with a “B” and not a “Z!” By the end of the first weekend, I had my best sale at the time and it was in my favorite condo. Even now we are still close friends!

Q: What is an obstacle that you have had to deal with at a showing? A: I will never forget this story—it was like straight out of a comedy! I went on a walk through before a closing, and the apartment was loaded with at least eight dead mice. My knees were literally knocking! I offered to help my buyer postpone her closing or get out of her contract, of course. Luckily she was a country girl and was planning a renovation. No biggie for her, major biggie for me!

Q: What is an area in NYC that is up and coming? A: Spoiler Alert—The Upper East Side east of Third, but you better hop on it, as they’re selling fast! With the addition of the Second Avenue subway line, real estate east of Third Avenue will grow exponentially.

Q: If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 things would you keep? A: One—the fabulous brochure from 56 Leonard. I’m looking forward to a few upcoming closings there! Two—my favorite photo of my daughter, and three—a positive attitude.

Q: Your slogan is “Real Estate Will Always Be In Fashion.” Why? Can you provide some key staples in your wardrobe? A: Just as people are keenly interested in the newest fashion trends, they are equally interested in what is happening in the real estate market. New neighborhoods, architectural styles, fixtures, tastes— these all adapt to the times, much like fashion.

SOHO WEST NEIGHBORHOOD

On Jersey City/Hoboken Border on the Rise With Launch of 2nd Amenity-Rich Rental

S

oHo West, an emerging new neighborhood on the border of Jersey City and Hoboken, is taking flight with the launch of the second luxury rental building within the Cast Iron Lofts collection. SoHo West -- so named because it is south of Hoboken and west of New York City – is the brainchild of Manhattan Building Company, which is introducing hundreds of new residences, lavish amenities and street-level retail space to the area. The newest addition, Cast Iron Lofts II, is a 27-story industrial-inspired building that blends 232 loft-style residences with a full suite of indoor and

outdoor amenities and 20,000 square-feet of retail space. Following the successful lease-up of the first building, Cast Iron Lofts II features expansive studio, one-, two and a large selection of three-bedroom residences ranging from 885 to 1,885 square feet of living space at monthly rents starting from $2,495. The size of the apartments -- which offer high ceilings, soaring living spaces and some of the largest floor plans in the Hudson County marketplace -- relatively lower prices when compared to Manhattan and Brooklyn properties, and comprehensive amenity offering have appealed to renters on both sides of the river. The new apartments are bathed in natural light and have been designed to maximize layout and location, with many boasting magnificent views of the New York City skyline and/or the Statute of Liberty. Distinctive architectural elements and features include 10’ ceiling heights with exposed duct work, oversized windows, custom walk-in closets, hardwood floors, granite countertops, bathrooms with stained marble vanity, polished porcelain Carrera-tiled floor and glass enclosed showers with shower surround and massaging shower-heads. There’s also state-of-the-art, fully-equipped kitchens with stainless steel appliances.

88 • Resident • May 2016

For coveted outdoor amenities, Cast Iron Lofts serves up quite an offering with an impressive 17,000 square-foot resort-style rooftop deck with a heated pool, pool-side shower, gas BBQ grills, outdoor fire pit lounge areas, a separate large Bark Park for pets and lush landscaping with a shaded tree grove and sitting area. There’s also a state-ofthe-art fitness center with training stations, yoga studio and fitness on demand system, business center, private conference room, children’s playroom, resident lounge with bar, fireplace, billiard table and large screen TV; a lobby library lounge and bike storage. Residents also enjoy a 24-hour concierge, lobby package display system, valet dry cleaning service, on-demand fitness reservation system and indoor reserved garage parking. Cast Iron Lofts’ location allows residents to enjoy all that Hoboken and downtown Jersey City have to offer. Complimentary daily shuttle service is provided to nearby PATH stations and NY Waterway ferry terminals, while the community’s SoHo Link service offers transportation to select local destinations, including SoHo in New York City. Cast Iron Lofts’ onsite leasing center is located at 837 Jersey Avenue. For additional information on the rental homes and to schedule a private tour of the furnished model residences and amenity spaces, please call (201) 795-3500 or visit www.castironcollection.com.

Be very careful when choosing your broker because he or she will be handling your biggest asset. You want a broker who is trustworthy, a specialist in the area you’re looking to buy, and a powerful negotiator who will advocate on your behalf. Experience and a track record of successful transactions are key.

What do you think sets you apart from your peers? I’ve earned the title, “First Lady of Beverly Hills Real Estate” through my close ties to the Beverly Hills community. I raised my three children in 90210 and now my kids are raising their children here. Beverly Hills has a world-class reputation, but at its heart it is a closely-knit town. Having intimate knowledge of the community allows me to serve my clients in a way that only someone who lives, breathes, and LOVES Beverly Hills can. I share what I’ve learned in the real estate business in my book, From Homemaker to Breadwinner. Buying and selling homes in Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Bel Air, and Holmby Hills is a significant investment for my clients. My intimate knowledge of the inventory, including sales history, renovations, a home’s strengths and weaknesses, and particular details about each neighborhood, allows me to provide my clients unrivaled information. No amount of technology or online content can substitute for decades of tirelessly “kicking the tires.”

What was your career prior to becoming a broker? I earned my bachelors degree from the University of Buffalo. My husband, Stephan, and I then made our way west and settled in Beverly Hills where he established Nourmand &

Associates in 1976. While he was busy building his real estate empire, I was consumed with raising three kids. Nicole, Howard, and Michael are my three shining diamonds. I spent countless hours driving them to their various extracurricular activities, volunteering, and meeting parents in Beverly Hills. Inevitably, when I was speaking with a mom or dad at any number of events I attended, parents would tell me about their real estate plans. Some needed to buy a bigger home for their growing family. Others needed to downsize. I regularly shared my conversations with my husband. “Myra, you sold me, you can sell the world,” he told me. Stephan encouraged me to earn my real estate license and begin selling homes. But in my eyes, I was Myra the homemaker and social butterfly and didn’t think of myself as a businesswoman. My mom thought it was a terrible idea to mix marriage and career (as a Realtor, I’d be an employee in my husband’s company). But Stephan never shied away from taking risk. He continued to encourage me, and I had always trusted his instincts. I launched my real estate career by leveraging my

intimate knowledge of my clients’ needs and Beverly Hills real estate as well as my “failure is never an option” attitude. Through innumerable hours of hard work, I’ve consistently been named Top 25 Real Estate Agents by Hollywood Reporter.

Beverly Hills Estate asking $25,000,000. Majestic French manor North of Sunset Blvd

What do you love the most about your job? For me, it’s an honor that my clients trust me to help them find the home of their dreams, as well as their most important purchase. In addition, representing buyers and sellers in Beverly Hills means I meet high profile and highly successful men and women every day. After establishing my reputation throughout the Westside, I never know who will phone my office seeking my help. Whether it’s a Hollywood studio powerbroker, a famous actress, or an international business mogul, working with the world’s most talented individuals is a thrill. They believe in my instincts, which, in all truth have only come from working around the clock for decades. No two days are ever the same. Every day brings new opportunities and experiences. I have the privilege of seeing the most beautiful houses that most people never have an opportunity to see! I also love that I’m part of the family business, Nourmand & Associates. The family brokerage is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. We have three offices and 172 agents. I’m proud to say that I’ve contributed to improving the community in which I live, have raised my wonderful kids, and work every day—I couldn’t imagine a more fulfilling combination.

Bragging Rights & biggest success stories & track record: Within a two-month period a few years ago, I brokered a series of three interconnected deals that totaled nearly $50 million. A high profile studio executive bought a Holmby Hills home I was selling that listed for $23 million. I then represented the studio executive in the sale of his previous home, which was located in Santa Monica Canyon and listed for $10 million. I found a buyer for the Santa Monica Canyon home and then represented that family in the sale of their $8.8 million Brentwood Park home. Men and women love living here and move around within the Westside as their real estate needs change. Your biggest asset is your reputation. So stay focused, never compromise on your principles, and always build trust. When you work this way, you’ve earned a client for life!

Real Estate Profiles

Ones to Watch in Real Estate

Eleonara Srugo

orn and raised in the concrete jungle of New York City, Eleonara Srugo, one of the top brokers at Douglas Elliman, always had a flair for real estate. Graduating from Boston University, the brunette beauty initially found a job working for Comcast Networks but was recruited into the real estate business by a family friend. Within a year of entering the business, Srugo became the top broker on the top producing team at her company. From selling ground up developments in Brooklyn to selling the largest single apartment located in flatiron, Srugo’s profile has been on the rise since finding her true calling. A crucial factor to the broker’s success is that she never sees this business as transactional, while most brokers create temporary relationships with their clients, Srugo emphasizes the importance of viewing clients as long term relationships as real estate agents have to understand the personal needs and desires of their clients. The bilingual broker prides herself in providing clients with a full service. She states that clients are more than welcome to phone her up two years after a deal has been closed. “Location, location, location,” is unfortunately not the most important thing when sizing up an apartment. Srugo states that while location is crucial, customers should always notice things that one is unable to change about the property such as window sizes, ceilings or if the apartment is a walkup. Clients need to carry out a period of browsing in order to know what they don’t want. However, Srguo does not want the process to be stressful. To her, shopping for houses is just like shopping for material goods, it should be fun. Unaware of the obstacles and adventures that lie ahead, Srugo is enthusiastic about the future. A few years down the road, the company will be expanding into Brooklyn, a prospect Srugo is excited for.

Michael Lorber

on of Howard Lorber, an established businessman in the real estate industry, Michael Lorber was born to be a broker. After graduating from Babson College, he went onto earn a law degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, and finally a Master’s degree in Real Estate from New York University. While in Boston, Lorber got his feet wet running a firm but realize it was not his true calling because he desired to be out running the streets with clients. While real estate may seem like a fallback careers targeted at divorcees or soccer moms, it is a booming industry as people realize that it is a sexy business. Seemingly overeducated for a broker, Lorber credits his education for his success. With million dollar savings involved, Lorber aims to provide guidance for his clients’s largest business transaction. Previously starring on Million Dollar Listing, the charming broker stated that the show was not something he wanted to pursue longterm. He realized that his clients are more private and are reluctant to be featured on television. While the unknown excites Lorber, suffering from OCD makes it difficult to enjoy the excitement of never experiencing the same day twice. Lorber laments that five years ago, there was not much exciting stuff to sell but that has all changed with the economy recovering. Although developers are ambitious with pricing, it’s a piece of cake for brokers to close the deal. However, Lorber is dejected at the sight of vanishing hotels. He states that while he understands that by converting older hotels into apartments, it generates millions of dollars, he very much prefers the magnificent architecture of grand hotels.

A POOL WITH A VIEW By: Hillary Latos

W

hile New York City is known as the city that never sleeps, sleep is not the only thing that New Yorkers are deprived of. In a city crowded with skyscrapers and apartments, a rooftop pool is the ultimate symbol of luxury. Sitting on the 18th floor of The James Hotel in Soho, JIMMY offers indoor and outdoor spaces with a lounge and pool with 360 degree views of Manhattan. Providing a modern spin on a typical bar, the rooftop pub incorporates a sleek 70s in its decor. As outdoor space is a premium in NYC, JIMMY is the perfect respite to enjoy the warm summer weather while taking a dip in the pool against a breathtaking backdrop. The bar is lined with herringbone wood floors, decorated with chic furniture, surrounded by a maroon colored tile wall, and features a functioning fireplace that patrons can enjoy during the harsh winters. Don’t be disappointed when you can’t venture outside of the inside conversation pit due to the frosty weather as the pub is swanked by 14 inch windows so pub-goers can admire the city’s stunning architecture and unparalleled view all year round. As the temperature rises in the big apple, pub-goers swarm to Jimmy to bask out in the sun and take a dip in the pool. Guests can relax on the lounges or sunbath on the roof deck while soaking in the city’s beautiful scenery. Despite its intimate setting that can only accommodate up to 70 people indoors, Jimmy’s ideal location and ambience attracts the trendiest crowds in the TriBeCa area. Enjoy a variety of cocktails that patrons can choose from including the ODB, a martini paired with celery, olives and blue cheese. Although it might feel a little odd sipping $20 cocktails with plastic cups, the spectacular view and music booming in the background certainly makes up for it. Evoking the cool downtown vibe of Soho, The James Hotel has a sleek and modern decor with rooms that reflect stylish loft style living. Every room is decked in a neutral palette with contemporary furnishings that provide a stylish and luxurious retreat in the heart of downtown. Savor the flavors of celebrity chef David Burke whose namesake Kitchen is the signature restaurant at The James, and is also considered to be one of the top dining destinations in the city. As one of the most revered chefs in America, his unique approach to creating signature dishes has garnered him accolades throughout the industry and you can have all of this without leaving the property. DINING OUT

May 2016

If there is one thing that New Yorkers can never tire of is its dynamic dining scene. Just like the dating scene in the city, New York City offers plethora of choices with an ever changing landscape of new hotspots, seasonal menus, and places worthy of experiencing. From elegant five star fine dining to downtown hotspots, power dining, Mediterranean favorites, and the Williamsburg scene, take the time to enjoy the diversity of flavors New York City has to offer.

Alfredo 100 Described as New York’s most respected Italian restaurant, Alfredo di Roma restaurant began operating in 1914 in Rome. Its meteoric rise began when Hollywood legends Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks patronized the restaurant while on their honeymoon in Rome, and fell in love with their signature dish- Fettucine Alfredo. Often imitated but seldom mastered, this rich and indulgent dish is made with simple ingredients- al dente fettucini topped with equal amounts of butter and parmesan mixed with salted pasta water. After providing a century of excellent food and genuine service, Ilaria Coletto partnered with Russell Bellanca to relocate Alfredo to its current location in Midtown Manhattan that evokes a Roman ambiance enhanced by Al Hirschfeld murals. Executive Chef James Henderson has mastered their most famous dishes along with other Italian classics such as Ossobuco with saffron risotto and Spaghetti all’aragosta served in a lobster shell. As famous Roman Federico Fellini once said, “Life is a combination of magic and pasta.” Alfredonyc.com

American Cut An addition to the midtown power dining scene is LDV Hospitality and Marc Forgione’s newest eatery, American Cut. Rightfully earning his celebrity and Michelin starred chef status, Forgione pays homage to the classic American steakhouse by capturing the nostalgic charm of yesteryear and adapting it to today’s modern social lifestyle. The elegant dining room housed in the historic Lombardy hotel features an art deco opulence awash in pale grey with touches of 70s glam. Forgione’s decadent touches on classics include oysters topped with champagne and black truffle, a rich thick cut house seasoned bacon with his signature steak sauce and a melt in your mouth 20 oz. bone in rib eye rubbed with pastrami spices and smoke. To top off the dining experience is their interactive craft cocktail program. The diverse menu includes unique ingredients to scintillate the palate whether its an unexpected savory libation or a light and refreshing concoction made with seasonal produce. americancutsteakhouse.com

Clement at the Peninsula Hotel Embodying the iconic elegance of The Peninsula New York is their resplendent five star fine dining restaurant and bar, Clement. Chef Remi van Peteghem specializes in utilizing the best seasonal and local ingredients to create elevated contemporary American cuisine. Sample seafood delicacies such as the Seared Sea Bass with Roasted Duck Broth, Black Kale, and Maitake, or the Charred Octopus with Berkshire Pork Belly, Espelette Jus, Sea Asparagus, and Sepia Risotto. Carnivores would savor the perfectly seared 28 Day Dry Aged Striploin with Roasted Rosemary Potatoes, Pan Fried Scallions, & Herb Compound Butter. A new addition this spring are the daily revolving ‘chefs plates’ that pay tribute to home cooked American classics from the 1950s with anindulgent flair such as whole Maine Lobster Pot Pie or Slow Braised Wagyu Beefcheek Bourguignon Casserole. The cocktail menu features a variety of signature drinks that blend old world favorites with seasonal ingredients including the Sassafras Cobbler which is concocted with Dickel Rye sassafras leaves and pickled blueberries that can also be enjoyed in their chic bar setting. newyork.peninsula.com

Vandal A celebration of art, architecture and worldly cuisines, Vandal is the latest pet project by TAO Group and Chef Chris Santos. One of hottest spots of the moment on Bowery, the bi-level space accommodates a bar, restaurant, and dining area that is open until 3 am. Traveling around the world in search of inspiration, Vandal’s menu is a clear representation of Chef Santos’ repertoire. His multi-ethnic dishes include nods to international street food from Chile to Thailand to Europe. The 22, 000-square foot space is decorated by streets artists including HUSH, Apexer and Eelus. HUSH painted three semi-nude women across a 35’ x 16’ wall. A mélange of art and cuisine, as guests step into Vandal, they are greeted by an 11-foot tall, hot pink bunny rabbit, sculpted by the Rockwell Group signifying a night of wonderment. Fig & Olive Instead of centering dishes on butter, the menu’s key ingredient is olive oil. Having grown up in the South of France, Laurent Halasz, founder of the restaurant, was enlightened by the seasonal availability of ingredients in the Mediterranean. Using the abundant bounty of spring he has created a delicious menu this month with dishes such as burrata with asparagus and blood orange dressing, crab salad with apple horseradish dressing, sea scallop with carrot orange puree and filet mignon with a manchego and mascarpone olive oil infused Bearnaise sauce. With five locations throughout the city, accessing a taste of the Mediterranean is easy for New Yorkers. Figandolive.com

Oleanders Executive Chef Kevin Chojnowski has reimagined the McCarren Hotel & Pool’s Oleanders restaurant concept in favor of more modern American comfort dishes. The new bar program by Beverage Manager Francis Verrall complements the menu offerings with an array of spirit-forward craft cocktails featuring seasonal ingredients and local distillers. The menu spans from elevated classic comfort American cuisine such as tender Cider Braised Short Rib towering over creamy polenta with colorful vegetables and a Bone Marrow Cheeseburger bursting with beefy flavor from bone marrow and Pat LaFrieda meat, topped with Havarti cheese, housemade onion relish and a side of hand cut fries. Composed sides range from creamy, Burrata drizzled with truffle honey, gorgeous veined greens, candy striped beets and pickled golden raisins to perfectly charred Crispy Brussels Sprouts with contrasting sweetness from honey. Come summer, Oleanders introduces exciting seasonal offerings in tandem with the opening of the hotel’s rooftop and expansive pool deck. oleandersnyc.com

Freud Restaurant

By Jesse Topal

AN

AUSTRIAN AFFAIR

A

fter taking a walk around Greenwich Village, I stopped in to the newly opened Freud Restaurant, the latest endeavor from Michelin-starred chef Edward Frauneder, (Edi & the Wolf and the Third Man) which offers a contemporary take on Austrian fare. The charming and inviting 65- seat restaurant was designed by Austrian native Florian Altenburg. The very welcoming hostess and wait-staff helped guide the meal to perfection. The team behind The Third Man, Frauneder’s Viennese-inspired cocktail bar, offers a wine list focused on natural, organic and biodynamic wines with an emphasis on Central Europe, while the beer list echoes this region with a wide variety on tap such as Radeberger Pilsner, Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen and Braufactum Progusta. A few of the must try cocktails include; The Slip with Zubrowka Vodka, Lime Juice, Egg White, Simple Syrup and Orange Bitters; the Libido with Tequila, Lime Juice, Honey-Jalapeño Syrup, Turmeric Juice and Thai Basil; and the Taboo with Rye, Carpano Antica, Walnut Liqueur, Maple, Orange and Walnut Bitters. The very knowledgeable bartender is also very accommodating to anything else that comes to mind. The dinner menu begins with shared plates like Crushed Beets with Whipped Liptauer and Housemade Crackers; Onion Tarte with Braised Cipollini, Gruyere Cheese and Onion Gravy as well as Albacore Crudo with Pumpkin, Basil and Crispy Sunchokes. Small plates include Scallops with Roasted Leeks, Smoked Ratte Potatoes and Elephant Garlic; and a Dark Rye Spätzle with Five Spoke Tumbleweed Cheddar and Cauliflower. Frauneder introduces a signature Freud Burger with Farmhouse Cheddar, Onion Jam and Crispy Fennel. If you still have room the selection of large plates include: Pork Neck with Bacon, Caramelized Lettuces and Anatto Sweet Potatoes; Grilled Skirt Steak with Charred Scallion, Black Shallots and Celeriac Mille-Feuille; and his renowned Wiener Schnitzel with Cucumber Dill, Yukon Gold Potato Salad and Cranberry. Desserts like Citrus Cheesecake with Blood Orange Compote and Brown Butter Crumble; and Chocolate Almond Cake with Quince and Pumpkinseed Sour Cream round out the menu. 108 • Resident • May 2016

The restaurant design incorporates original tile and sage green wainscoting, which serves as an inspiration for the restaurant’s color palette. Nodding to the turn-of-the-century brasseries in Frauneder’s native Vienna, the space features vintage Austrian Thonet chairs, lush leather banquettes, marble topped café tables up front and a distressed mirror over the mahogany bar. In warmer months it will be very exciting to see what Freud has to offer once the patio seating opens. Freudnyc.com

A

s the city warms up, it’s time to celebrate the summer with a bottle of Maison Marcel Rosé. Named after their grandfather, Marcel was a charismatic lad who had the finest taste in dining. The young charmer met his match in a woman who didn’t like rosé. In order to sweep her off her feet, the wine connoisseur concocted Maison Marcel, a new take on French Rosé. The sweet blend of Grenache, Merlot along with a hint of Black Moscato melted her heart and the two embarked on a journey of love. The spirit represents summer with its undertones of litchi, peach, and rose notes to enhance the fresh, floral, and divine taste. This achieve the perfect balance within the Rosé that elevate the flavor profile. Whether you’re sunbathing along the poolside, lounging on a yacht or relaxing at a posh beach club, while sipping on your glass of rosé, don’t forget to splash in a handful of ice to savor every bit of the wine.

SWEET HOSPITALITY GROUP 30 Years of Dramatic Catering

H

amilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Neil Patrick Harris and husband David Burtka, have all dined on Sweet Hospitality Group’s fare this season. In addition to private parties and benefits, they cater pre-curtain parties and run the innovative lobby concession stands we all hit up at intermission.

Lincoln Center A tenet of starting a successful business is to find a niche and fill it, and that’s exactly what founder and owner Julie Rose did, thirty years ago. She came to New York to study musical theater writing, and after graduating, was working at a kitchen in Queens that catered film and television shoots. She wasn’t so great at working on large-scale food prep. “They kind of kicked me out of the kitchen, and said, ‘Why don’t you take the food to the jobs?’” Rose says. She became known among the film crews, and eventually she got a call from Lincoln Center’s Mitzi Newhouse Theater, which needed someone to run their concessions. “I asked the people I was working for if they wanted to do it, and they said no, and I didn’t think about it again until I picked up The New Yorker, and saw that David Mamet was doing a play there, and he had just won for Glengarry Glen Ross, so I thought, what the hell, I’ll call.”

Lion King Rose had a success on her hands. “I was a resentful business owner,” she laughed. “I wanted to be in the arts, but I was around the arts, so it was really fun.” And the business just grew organically. The Beaumont

112 • Resident • May 2016

Theater opened a much bigger venue holding 1,000, so she started hiring people. She read that Disney would be opening a theater, and contacted them. “I was always a marketer,” Rose says. “I’m an

extrovert, and I like selling, so it just naturally happened.” Today, her company is in 26 theaters, and still growing. They added City Center last year. For Disney, they designed a Lion King souvenir cup that is a best seller. “People love it and they are collecting them” Rose says.

Cabaret Sweet Hospitality also caters weddings, bar mitzvahs, corporate events, and all kinds of parties, and Rose keeps up on food trends. Today, people want healthier options. Some of the theater concessions have more extensive menus than others. One, on Theatre Row, serves empanadas, and the Beaumont offers hummus and cheese plates. The company had a full dinner menu with waiter service at the recent production of Cabaret, starring Alan Cumming, because it was set up as an actual nightclub in Weimar Berlin. The atmospheric environment there spurred Rose into doing more immersive events at private parties.

Harlem School of the Arts An upcoming party for Harlem School of the Arts, on whose board she sits, will have a Havana theme, with her staff dressed in Cuban costumes and hats. “Our tagline is ‘A dramatic departure from ordinary.’ It is who we are. Most of us came from a theater or arts background. So for us it’s the fun of putting on a show.” sweethospitalitygroup.com

Herb Karlitz

HERB KARLITZ Harlem EATUP

C

hef Marcus Samuelsson and veteran event marketer Herb Karlitz launched the first Harlem EatUp!, a three-day food festival, with the support of President Bill Clinton and Mayor Bill de Blazio in 2015. This year’s festival will be held at Morningside Park from May 19 through 22nd. Bobby Flay, Emeril Lagasse, and Daniel Boulud will team up with chefs from local restaurants to cook at local food hot spots. Bill Clinton again serves as the event ambassador; national sponsors include the Bordeaux Wine Council, Aetna, and USA Today. This years beneficiaries include Citymeals on Wheels, Harlem Park to Park, and Historic Harlem Parks.

Karlitz & Company Herb owns and runs Karlitz & Company, a full service “lifestyle and entertainment” marketing firm, which creates unique experiences to build customer loyalty for clients. “We do ski clinics with Lindsey Vonn and golf clinics with Hank Haney, who is Tiger Woods’s former coach,” Karlitz says. “In marketing-speak it’s retention,” he explains. Karlitz recently produced a John Legend concert for a client, attended only by their best customers. He’s also an entertainment lawyer who rose through the ranks of the worldwide public relations firm Burson-Marsteller to create and lead its Entertainment & Event Marketing division. There he created concert events for everyone from Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys to Bon Jovi and Stevie Wonder.

Herb Karlitz and Neil Patrick Harris @ Harlem EatUp!

Karlitz loves food and wine, and 75% of his company’s business is producing culinary events with celebrity chefs, who are his friends. “I have found a way to make my passions and interests, which are food, wine and cooking, into my business.” His parents owned a restaurant and that’s where he developed a love for all things gastronomic.

The Food Network This passion also led him to regard chefs as professionals whose job is to entertain and make people happy, similar to musicians and actors. Karlitz likes to say that he was working with “celebrity chefs” back when they were just called cooks. “We developed this niche of working with and creating celebrity chefs before they were celebrity chefs,” he says. Karlitz was involved in one of the first-ever food and wine festivals where, he says, nobody knew who Emeril Lagasse was. “He was just starting on the Food Network. And we had about 35 major chefs who were favorites of ours, but nobody really knew, like Charlie Trotter from Chicago, and other nowfamous chefs.”

Chef Masaharu Morimoto Karlitz feels that a chef becoming famous by appearing on television and commanding huge appearance fees is good for the culinary world. “They’re able to get people interested in cooking and not see it as going back to school, which is what I think Emeril paved the way for.” In the past, there was Julia Child, but today there are many personalities thanks to the Food Network. And yes, Karlitz says he is not too intimidated to cook for his celebrity chef pals at his home. When Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto visited, he decided to whip up short ribs. But Karlitz does know where to draw the line. “One thing I stayed away from was sushi,” he admits. harlemeatup.com

Tyler Place Resort

By Judy Koutsky

TYLER PLACE IS CALLING Outdoor Summer Adventure in Vermont

A

s you start to plan your summer getaway with the family, there’s a few things you’ll probably want: a great camp for kids (to be outdoors as much a possible); a place where adults get some, well, adult-time (we love our kids, but still); excellent farm-to-table food, and of course, a glorious setting. Look no further than Tyler Place Resort. Sitting on 165 acres in Northern Vermont, near the Canadian border, this quintessential New England resort sits on the banks of Lake Champlain, promising amazing sunrise and sunsets and plenty of family fun.

This is the place to come for a digital detox: your family will spend the week biking, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and eating locally grown food. One of the biggest draws to the resort is the fact that kids go to camp each day with other kids their age and parents get a chance to connect (or play) with other parents. Grown-ups are offered amazing excursions including cooking classes, sculpting and pottery lessons, gardening classes, golf, tennis, sailing, spa, canoe tours and more. Kids are off doing scavenger hunts, fishing, swimming and team races. Everyone gets plenty of fresh air and fun. The property consists of a variety of stand-alone cottages as well as the main Inn. Many cottages have beautiful views of Lake Champlain. Most cottages have two or three bedrooms, a living room, bathroom, sun deck, and kitchen. They have bigger cottages for larger families (or groups staying together; perfect for family reunions).

128 • Resident • May 2016

Perhaps the biggest draw to this resort is the fact that meals are kid-free. That might at first seem counter-intuitive to a family vacation, but anyone who has sat through the temper tantrums of their three-year-old picky eater, knows—and appreciates— the value of an adults-only dinner. Kids eat with kids—at camp, with their friends—and parents eat in the “adult” dining room with other adults. Seating can be small (a table for two when you want some alone time with your mate) or, more common, groups of people sitting together. Letting the kids eat separately (and taking away all the challenges that go with eating with children) allows parents to really relax and feel like they’re on vacation. Plus, kids love being able to eat their meals with their friends and counselors. Tyler Place Resort consistently ranks as one of the top all-inclusive family resorts in the country, and it’s for good reason. Boasting one of the highest repeat visitor rates of any U.S. resort, it’s a stressfree stay for both parents and kids. Now that sounds like a vacation for all. tylerplace.com or call 802-868-4000

Hudson Valley

HUDSON VALLEY The Undiscovered Counties

I

f you follow the body of water forming the western boundary of Manhattan North you leave the City boundary into Westchester County and from there into the Hudson Valley. Long before the citizens of New York became fixated with the Hamptons, Hudson Valley was the source of food from agriculture and water from the rivers of the Catskills flowing into the Hudson. As the Hamptons circuit becomes ever more exclusive, the Hudson Valley offers visitors both a contrasting experience visually and some great adventures as was recognized by National Geographic Traveller in 2013 which declared the Valley one of the top 20 destinations in the World – here are a selection of seven places to go and experience, one from each of the Counties making up the Hudson Valley.

Rockland County

coffee shops, restaurants and boutique stores offer a great day out and easily accessible via rail including the Zagat rated Hudson House River Inn (2 Main Street, T:845.265.9355 www.hudsonhouseinn.com).

Orange County North of Rockland County and at its western point the Town of Port Jervis is the intersection of the tri-state area – New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania and a jump off point to the Upper Delaware Water Gap and the Catskill Mountains – all accessible at the end of the railway line from New York. Named one of the “Ten coolest towns” by Budget Travel Magazine amongst other attractions the town is home to the Tri-State Monument (www.portjervisny. org).

landscapes and recreational opportunities by virtue of the county being home to the bulk of the Catskill Park and Catskill forest preserve. Historical landmark the Lake Mohonk Mountain House on Shawangunk Ridge is a Victorian castle resort which might sound old but has charging stations for electric cars along with an award winning spa (1000 Mountain Rest Road, New Paltz, T: 844.875.8656 www.mohonk.com).

Columbia County The Northern most county on the Eastern side of the Hudson River in the Valley, Columbia is the place for festivals – The Hudson Berkshire Wine and Food Festival (May 28-29, 2016), PS21 Film Festival (Aug 1-7, 2016), Festival of Books (Sept 2-5, 2016) and the ultra-cute Dalmation Day (Oct 8th, 2016). Puppies ! Dine and play golf at Copake Country Club (44 Golf Course Rd, 518.325.4338 www.copakecountryclub.com)

The Closest, smallest and Southern-most county of the Valley on the West side of the Hudson River. Rockland is home to several public and private golf courses including Manhattan Woods designed by the legendary Gary Player (One Ahlmeyer Drive, West Nyack, T: 845.627.2222 www.mwgolf.club). For those interested in shopping why not try The Pallisades shopping Mall – one of the largest in America (1000 Pallisades Center Dr, West Nyack, T: 845.348.1000 www.pallisadescenter.com).

A county of rolling hills, farmland and stables, the most well known towns of Dutchess county include Rhinebeck, Millbrook and Red Hook. Visit President FDR’s home in Hyde Park, Attend the Mashomack International Polo Challenge on June 18th, 2016 (www.mashomackpoloclub.com), dine at the Tavern at the Beekman Arms in the centre of Rheinbeck (6387 Mill Street, T: 845.876.1766 www. beekmandelamaterinn.com) or for something a little spicy the Red Hook Curry House (28E Market Street, T: 845.758.2666 www.redhookcurryhouse.com).

Putnam County

Ulster County

The Northern-most county of the Valley on the West side of the Hudson River and named in honor of Revolutionary War General, Nathanael Greene. The county sees itself as the “Great Northern Catskills” south of the state Capital, Albany and home to the Winter sports skiing havens of Hunter and Wyndham mountains. For something different why not save the airfare and visit “New York’s Mount Rushmore”, Pratt Rock in Prattsville, NY (www.greenecountytourism.org).

At 18, Petrossov was already co-founder of a tech company. By 22, he had a finance degree from University of Florida in one hand, and a CEO position in his second company in the other. “When I was 18, I realized I wanted to be a tech entrepreneur. I hated being in college, so while I studied finance I was also already involved with engineers. So maybe I’m not an engineer by trade, but I always got myself involved in product and innovation.” After taking a private jet for the first time with a friend in July 2009, Petrossov recognized a niche in the industry. Working like a company from the 1980’s, ordering a jet was a complicated and long process involving multiple calls, emails and even faxing (Petrossov noting that he doesn’t even remember 142 • Resident • May 2016

the last time he used a fax machine). An example of the digital age, he started thinking of ways to modernize the jet industry, simplifying the supply and demand for private flying through the creation of an app. For a subscription of $9,000, a JetSmarter user can get a free seat on a chartered flight right through the app. Here’s how it works: One man might be flying a private plane at a cost of $20,000. JetSmarter offers this man a discounted cost of $10,000 if he gives one or more free seats to JetSmarter users. “The existing flyer is saving a lot of money, and the new flyer has a low entry point for him to start experiencing it. This ecosystem will continue

to grow because it works for both of them.” Self-taught and with a keen eye for business and innovation, Petrossov wants to be involved in all aspects of the company, from finance to production, investment to innovation, using his intuition as his guiding force over previous experience. As a worldwide traveler, Petrossov ended the interview by telling us about his favorite spots to eat in New York and Miami: for Miami, he recommends Casa Tua, and for New York, his favorite restaurant is Marea.

BLUEGRASS MUSICALS TO TRAGIC DRAMAS FROM

Left TO RIGHT: Ahna O’Reilly and Steven Pasquale in The Robber Bridegroom, photo by Joan Marcus, 2016 | Adam Pascal & Kerry Butler in DISASTER! on Broadway, photo by Jeremy Daniel Photography, 2016 | (L-R) Pascale Armand, Lupita Nyong’o, & Saycon Sengbloh in a scene from Danai Gurira’s Eclipsed, Directed by Liesl Tommy, photo by Joan Marcus | Jeff Daniels & Michelle Williams in a scene from Blackbird, a play by David Harrower, Photo by Brigitte Lacombe.

I

don’t remember any year when there were so many country/bluegrass musicals in town.

“The Robber Bridegroom” is a revival of a 1975 musical, based on a Eudora Welty novella, with a book and lyrics by Alfred Uhry and music by Robert Waldman. The fairy tale plot involves Rosamund, the daughter of a rich plantation owner, who travels into the woods where she meets the roguish title character. The girl has a nasty but very funny gold-toothed stepmother. The music is lively and the seductive rogue is played by the charismatic and powerful voiced Steven Pasquale (the polar opposite of his part as the racist cop Mark Fuhrman in the OJ Simpson series). The scene stealer is Leslie Kritzer as the evil stepmother. The lively choreography by Connor Gallagher is another plus. Director Alex Timbers first achieved fame for “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson,” but “The Robber Bridegroom” gave me more pleasure. I caught one of the last performances of “Southern Comfort,” the bluegrass musical based on Kate Davis’ documentary film. The Public Theater continues its practice of putting on innovative musicals that touch the heart, like “Fun Home” and “Caroline, or Change.” I don’t know if this one will make the move to Broadway but it deserves to. “Southern Comfort” deals with a group of transgender friends in rural Georgia, contending with community hostility and their own personal issues. Annette O’Toole (the hottie of 70’s films such as “The Cat People” and “Smile”) portrays Robert Eads, who was born 150 • Resident • May 2016

Barbara but has become a man, complete with facial hair. She is convincing and is also an excellent singer. The musical, with book and lyrics by Dan Collins and music by Julianne Wick Davis, was directed by Thomas Caruso (who conceived the show with Robert DuSold). They and the cast all merit accolades. For a musical with a completely different style of music, check out the deliriously funny “Disaster!” This is a take-off on such tacky Hollywood movies as “The Poseidon Adventure” and “Earthquake.” It’s hard to satirize something that’s already pretty silly, but “Disaster!” manages. The pro-

duction is helped by a top-flight cast: Adam Pascal and Kerry Butler are exlovers, Roger Bart is the sleazy owner of the doomed cruise ship, and Rachel York is his clueless girlfriend. Her twin son and daughter are cleverly played by Baylee Littrel, Faith Prince and Kevin Chamberlin are a prickly couple, Seth Rudetsky is the scientist no one listens to—he also wrote the script with director Jack Plotnick—and, best of all, Jennifer Simard is a nun with a gambling addiction. The songs are all pop hits from the 1970’s. Broadway also has its share of serious dramas. On the back of many Playbills, there is a photo of the beautiful Lupita Nyong’o dressed to the nines.

On stage, though, in Danai Gurira’s powerful “Eclipsed,” she lives under the most tragic conditions. Set during the Liberian civil war, the work deals with the captive “wives” of a rebel leader. No men are seen but their presence is felt. Nyong’o plays the youngest of the women and she is as commanding onstage as she was in her Academy Awardwinning performance in “12 Years a Slave.” The “wives” are given numbers but the characters are unforgettable: Wife No. 1 (Saycon Sengbloh) tries to protect Nyong’o (who nevertheless becomes wife no. 4). Much of the humor comes from pregnant wife no. 2 (Pascale Armand) and Pres. Bill Clinton is the subject of many jokes. No. 3 (Zainab Jah) becomes a soldier and highlights the terrible choice of these women: to remain victims or to victimize others. Directed by Liesl Tommy, “Eclipsed” demands to be seen. David Harrower’s “Blackbird” takes place in an unspecified country, but it’s presumably the United States in this production. Two former lovers meet in an office lunchroom and spend 90 minutes together. No, it’s not pleasant. At the time of their relationship 15 years earlier, he was about 40 and she was 12, which resulted in his imprisonment. Now, he is out and living under an assumed name and she tracks him down in his workplace. The woman confronts him with what he has done to her in a searing monologue, while he makes an unconvincing attempt to defend himself. Directed by Joe Mantello, the two actors, Michelle Williams and Jeff Daniels, give volcanic performances and the script has some surprising twists.

Broadway Shows to Watch

By Kristen Oliveri

DADDY LONG LEGS

T

wo shows: one is a brand new showstopper, written by Hollywood royalty and the other is an off-Broadway production that’s been touring around the world before finding its home in New York. Seemingly two different productions bound by a common thread, and while on the outside they couldn’t be more different, their message of young women finding themselves and simultaneously creating an enduring love connects to us all.

Bluegrass Hits a High Note with a Starry Show The highly anticipated Broadway musical with the music, book and story written by Hollywood heavyweights Steve Martin and Edie Brickell opened last month featuring a talented cast led by Carmen Cusak, making her Broadway debut as Alice Murphy and Paul Alexander Nolan as Jimmy Ray Dobbs. The musical is unlike any other on Broadway currently—it’s an understated message with haunting Bluegrass music that takes you on one couple’s journey to recapture a loss of love that neither of them could ever be whole without. Nolan, who grew up on a grain farm in Saskatchewan, Canada almost missed the opportunity to play Jimmy Rae. He auditioned simultaneously for Bright Star and Off-Broadway play called Daddy Long Legs when he was cast in the leading role of the latter. The day after the show opened, he received a message from his agent that he had the offer to play Jimmy Rae. Nolan said that even though it was a tough decision to make, he had to give Bright Star a shot. “I fell in love with the script because it’s such a compelling piece of theater,” Nolan began. “It’s all on the page; I’ve never experienced that before while reading a script. It feels and reads more like a play than a 152 • Resident • May 2016

&

BRIGHT STAR

typical musical script. It broke my heart reading it and I knew it was going to be powerful.” And working with the likes of Martin and Brickell has also been a dream come true. “Their stellar reputation and fame doesn’t enter into the room at all. They are very humble and generous people, but of course they’re both brilliant. You get the benefit of their brilliance without the baggage. There’s no ego.” Nolan really embraced the challenge of playing both a younger and older version of Jimmy Rae. “I do really connect to Jimmy Rae as he represents two polar opposite sides of myself. I love getting to visit that kind of invincible view of the world that Jimmy Rae starts with. Having lived some years myself since, I’ve also seen life and grief and tragedy and I get the complexity of a character as an older person as well. It’s a gift to be able to connect with that,” he explained. At the heart of this production, is a beautifully touching music that demonstrates a poignant story of love, loss and finding faith again, even in the face of extreme adversity.

Daddy Long Legs Theater Connecting the Masses If you’re a softie for a good love letter, like I am, you’ll certainly be bewitched by the Off-Broadway musical Daddy Long Legs at the Davenport Theater directed by John Caird. Based on the original book written by Jean Webster in the early 1900s, the show provides an intimate expression of the two main characters—Jerusha and Jervis—played respectively by real-life husband and wife team, Adam Halpin and Megan McGinnis. The plot develops with a young woman’s evolution and how her deep romantic relationship with her benefactor blossomed through the power of the pen. “For Jerusha, when she is talking to the audience, she’s talking to Daddy Long Legs which automati-

cally creates a bond between the actor and the audience,” said McGinnis of the role that she has played for the last seven years of her life. McGinnis, who originated the role of Jerusha, has worked closely with Caird and musical director Paul Gordon for several years, taking the show on the road nationally and internationally, before settling into their off-Broadway home at the Davenport. The creative team was sent into a tailspin, however, when then-leading man Paul Alexander Nolan was called to take a starring role in Steve Martin’s Bright Star. After countless auditions, Caird and lyricist Paul Gordon suggested that McGinnis’ husband Halpin, take a stab at the role. Before long, the cast and crew realized Halpin was the perfect fit and the show reopened with a new Jervus. The show went through a maturation process, explained McGinnis, who said Gordon created a few new songs to originally showcase Nolan in the role when it came to Off- Broadway. In her mind, the music and the story kept growing and changing, getting better with age and now she gets to share the stage every night with her husband as an added bonus. Most recently in December, the show was the first of its kind to be streamed live online in an attempt to bring the power of Broadway to the masses. The show was seen by a total of 150,055 people in 135 countries around the world as far reaching as Syria, Tanzania, Jordan and Fiji. What live streaming represents is that Broadway touches the masses. The message of hope for the future and the concept of everyone finding their true love is universal, and that the power of song can bring great joy to the world.

Meet Bocker, the Labradoodle, Author of

CHASING BOCKER’S TAIL

M

arie and Steve had a dream, they moved into there forever home. One thing was missing, a dog for Steve who was the lead singer with the Lester Lanin Orchestra. A new breed, Labradoodle, low shedding dog, was the right fit for Steve who had severe asthma. Enter Bocker who came into their lives in August 2003. Why the name Bocker? Marie and Steve grew up as NY Knick fans and already rescued a cat named Knicki. Bocker was special from the start. He was pensive, looking like he was thinking about his next move, always calm, with almost human eyes. The Bocker Head Tilt made him famous, like he understood every word, one was saying... Marie decided to send his photo to an animal agent in NYC. at age 18 months, Bocker landed his first paying, modeling for Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren. He appeared in numerous print ads, TV commercials, and movies. His calm demeanor made him a natural for therapy work. People were amazed at his affect on children. Marie decided to take him for therapy dog certification and Bocker passed with flying colors. Bocker started to visit children in hospitals, senior homes, and took part in Tail Wagging Tutor programs, where children, who have trouble reading, especially in front of their teachers or peers, read to a dog. This program has helped raise reading levels and self-confidence in children. It has became Bocker’s motto, “Always ready to lend a helping paw.” After the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, Marie’s niece’s husband who is a pediatric dentist in Newtown and 8 of the 20 children that were killed were his patients. She knew that Bocker could help in some way with this tragedy. With Bocker now adding author to his credits, with his book, Chasing Bocker’s Tail, they were able

162 • Resident • May 2016

to arrange a day for the Newtown children to meet “celebrity” Bocker the Labradoodle at their library and to read with him. This was the start of many

amazing friendships that will last for a lifetime. Bocker is part of Sandy Hook’s extended family and invited to their events. The big furry, always calm guy, just brings smiles wherever he goes. Several years ago Lulu and Bocker walked the runway at the Hotel Pennsylvania, for a doggy wedding, the weekend of the Westminster Dog Show. For they were in the Bridal Party. Bocker has changed Marie’s life . Yes, lots of fun doing all the photo shoots and meeting so many amazing people along the way, but in all honesty, the most rewarding part of Bocker’s life to Marie is how he has been able to help others and bring smiles just by walking into a room. He has become a spokes dog for NYS Animal Advocacy, being the voice against animal cruelty, and works to help homeless animals in search of their furever homes. Bocker’s bout with Lymphoma has helped Marie to learn about comparative oncology and to be involved so that others don’t have to go through what they did.

They have partnered with the Animal Cancer Foundation and it is there mission to increase awareness and to a find a cure. Bocker is still leading Marie down a new path and that he will be here until his work is done. She always tells people that Bocker has been her therapy dog first! He has definitely made a huge difference in Marie’s life and she knows he has touched so many. In 2011 Marie’s husband, and very best friend, passed away suddenly, and without Bocker, she did not know what direction her life would take. A close friend told her, “It’s not time that heals, it’s what you do with the time that heals. Marie knows she is the luckiest person in the world to have Bocker by her side, helping her heal… Lulu and I have seen Bocker in action, he truly is the gentle giant and we are blessed to have him in our lives. Thank Bocker for making the world a better place. www.bocker.tv | Facebook.com/bocker | Instagram.com/bockerdoodle

We are an anti-aging skin care authority! Frownies expertise in eliminating the appearance of wrinkles naturally with no injections and no surgery since 1889. Frownies Facial pads reverse the deep expression lines that women have resigned themselves as inevitable. Without Frownies, they either live with facial expression lines or get injections. The reason the lines are so difficult to address is they start deep in the third layer of the skin, the muscle. Creams and lotions cannot affect the muscle of the face but Frownies can.
