THE ENCHANTMENT OF MAY
A
s spring is in full swing, April had a whirlwind of galas and soirees to usher in the unofficial beginning of summer which kicks off over Memorial Day. From our cover party with the vivacious Wendy Williams, the intimate Taste of Hell’s Kitchen, and the star studded Tribeca Film Festival we have featured them all this month.
IN THE STEAMY SOUTH OF THE 1930’s NOTHING COMES EASY BUT DREAMS ARE BIG Limited Premiere Engagement May 21 – June 18
In the spirit of summer we had our cover shoot with celebrated Mexican fashion designer Pineda Covalin at the luxurious Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun and Live Aqua Cancun to capture the design renaissance going on in Mexico at the moment. From its powdery white sand beaches to the placid infinity pools, this was the perfect backdrop that represents the essence of summer travel.
ICAALL MUUSSIC WM AA NNEEW
We also interviewed Hollywood’s next leading man and fellow New Yorker Rich Graff. With a dizzying array of projects in the works expect to see Graff on the large and small silver screens. Intelligent and witty, Rich dished on his real life experience of growing up in Staten Island with the offspring of New York’s most notorious crime families to playing Lucky Luciano in AMC’s acclaimed series “The Making of the Mob.” Last month I had the privilege of sojourning to the unspoiled and breathtaking Myanmar where time seems to have stood still. I witnessed some of the most awe inspiring sunrises with Intha fisherman on Inle Lake, and cruised past ancient temples and stupas from Bagan to Mandalay which I captured through my lens in our destination feature this month. As travel is always a highlight each issue, this month we covered exotic destinations such as Bangkok, China, Antigua and Lake Como as well as domestic short weekend jaunts such as South Beach, Boston and The Hamptons. With warmer weather in store, we explored some of the best alfresco dining spots around NYC and South Florida and previewed the new spring menus that captured the fresh flavors of the season. May brings enchantment with its seasonal changes with an abundance of positive energy. Take that journey, let your hair down, and enjoy the longer sunny days, as summer is just around the corner.

PINEDA COVALIN is a Mexican fashion design brand that works to promote Mexican culture on a national and international scale. The brand has been active for over 15 years since its creation and has a presence in multiple continents such as America, Europe and Asia. Pineda Covalin was established in 1995 by Cristina Pineda, who has a bachelor in fabric design and masters in arts design, and Ricardo Covalín who has a bachelor in industrial design in Mexico City. Pineda Covalin’s designs are inspired by elements of Mexican indigenous and contemporary art, as the brand works to portray the diversity of Mexico through its cultures.] Their designs are characterized for having representations of cultural elements such as architecture, sculpture, painting, codices, gastronomy and people themselves. Cristina Pineda states that the purpose of their designs is also to “create a bridge of communication among Latin America (countries)”, as they invite consumers to know more about the culture through products that tell stories. Ricardo Covalín supports the statement, saying that these stories also belong to all the participants in the creation process, as well as the generations that have helped maintain techniques and traditions alive up to our days. Their designs are product of an “interdisciplinary and creative” process, where designers, historians and anthropologists collaborate after analyzing tendencies in the industry and putting them together with their concepts and value. Along with this, the brand makes use of higher quality materials (mainly silk) in order to portray Mexican culture with “subtlety and modernity,” and position themselves among international brands.

SHEA ARENDER Las Vegas Symphony ORCHESTRA By Carlos Lacayo
The Music of Elvis Presley
I
n the 80’s, the Las Vegas Symphony Orchestra performed with Las Vegas luminaires including Engelbert Humperdinck and Barry Manilow. Now, after a two-decade long pause, the orchestra is triumphantly returning to Sin City under the ownership singer /songwriter Shea Arender. This summer they will open with, “The King Symphonic – The Music of Elvis Presley” starring Arender. “These are new beginnings for the Las Vegas Symphony Orchestra,” said the CEO. “With this re-launch we are providing a new opportunity for residents and tourists alike to experience a slice of culture in a fun, pop environment.”
Grammy and Emmy Award Music Arender and the orchestra will be working with legendary Conductor Steve Rawlins who composed the Grammy and Emmy award presentation music. One of the many plans the Las Vegas native has for the orchestra is to take a group that was originally designed as a backup orchestra, like those ones used by Elton John and Celine Dion, and change their focus to symphonic based arrangements using songs from his own musical influences that include the Rat Pack, Elvis Presley, Queen and Motown. “I feel as though if I’d done this 20-years ago it wouldn’t make an impact like it will now,” says Arender. “I want to reach a wide audience that includes classical music aficionados who previously would not have paid attention to a symphonic orchestra.”
The Great American Songbook Arender, whose background is in theatre and song, began his career
performing songs from the Great American Songbook, and was the Executive Producer of ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Song – The Music of Harold Arlen.’ He was also the Producer and star of Shea: Prince of Christmas, an Off-Broadway show that made CBS New York’s list of ‘Top Five Holiday Shows to See On or Off Broadway’, and featured six original songs by Arender including “The Christmas I Met You” which made the Top 100 Christmas Songs of All Time chart by The Merry Christmas Network; number six on the Billboard Christmas Singles Chart, and made the 1st Grammy Ballot.
What’s Next for the Orchestra The singer-songwriter acquired the Las Vegas Symphony Orchestra in 2016 and plans to expand the orchestras reach globally. The impact has already begun to spread worldwide as several international businesses have already shown interest in sponsoring the first set of performances. Shea said, “The shows will definitely be a symphonic concert but because of my background, I would like to include a Broadway element.” After the orchestra’s debut performance Shea will transform ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Song – The Music of Harold Arlen’, into the orchestras second symphonic concert this fall
National Arts Center Whether it’s playing for the role of Johnny Mercer, performing at the National Arts Center for their Andy Warhol benefit or attending performances around the globe, Shea keeps an open mind and is inspired by people he meets, the places he sees and music he hears, to expand peoples understanding and awareness of orchestral symphonic music. GEORGES BERGES The Soho Art Gallerist Star By George Wayne
T
he maverick art gallery owner Georges Berges is quickly developing a reputation as the new art gallerist star of Soho. He is especially noted for his sixth fashion sense in the sense that he seems to be organically developing a roster of artists influenced by the whirl of fashion and pop culture. The Arizona based star of the Georges Berges stable Michael Carson immediately comes to mind. His dreamy, sexy and obviously fashion influenced portraits have quickly gained him a growing list of top collectors and the attending acclaim that comes with it. We met to meet with the visionary gallerist Georges Berges at his increasingly buzzed about gallery at 462 West Broadway.
and special, as it should be, so even if I did sell them art, I couldn’t and wouldn’t tell you. I want people to know that any art purchased from my gallery or through Berges Creative Group are held under strict privacy and confidence, unless of course people publicly already decide to reveal their purchase. GW And the chic Soho sophisticated have been flocking to your gallery- isn’t Arthur Baker one of your prized collectors? And Jamie Dimon?
Laddie John Dill, Light Trap Series, 48x30in
GEORGE WAYNE Almost four years ago when you first opened your Soho/West Broadway gallery, I told you that you were destined to be ‘’the next Leo Castelli’’ and I am happy to see that you have not been proving GW wrong on that notion.
far and as they say in the movies, I’m just getting started!
GEORGES BERGES Thank you, im a great admirer of Leo Castelli, although I’m far from him he is someone to aspire to, the art world would be better served if we had more people aspiring to be Castelli. It’s been an amazing adventure thus
GB It was, I always felt it would have been the easy thing for me to do to just go to Chelsea I wanted a place that was rooted in history. To me the 70s and 80s in SoHo was a transformative time in the art world - I haven’t seen any other part of New York even come close to replicating that. I also wanted my gallery to have a global perspective not just on art but everything directly and indirectly related to art - I see myself, personally and professionally in much the same way. So I chose SoHo almost as a tip of the hat to an era gone by - and I hope that when people visit my gallery, see the dynamics between artist and gallerist and the curations that they get a real sense that it’s a different type of gallery. To me, art should be accessible and transformative to everyone.
GW Was it a conscious effort on your part to separate yourself from the new art gallery mecca in Chelsea and such environs?
GB I am a friend of Arthur Becker and hope to work together soon, he’s a very talented. Again, I try not to reveal too much of my collector base, I have had Jamie Dimon’s family in my gallery - I am working with someone near to him, we’ll leave it at that. GW You are always on the road scouring and scouting for new talent. Talk about your latest trips and some of your next big art stars being groomed by your stable. GB I was just in Mexico City for Zona Maco and have just returned from a trip to Paris, Lyon, and Cannes where I visited quite a few artists in their studio. I’ve been working with Eric Roux Fontaine in Lyon who’s paintings can only be described as magical realism - I love them. And I’m visiting a few other artists that I have my eye on, and of course reconnecting with old and new collectors.
GW Tommy Hilfiger is an avid contemporary art collector have you sold him anything? Or for that matter Donna (Karan) Calvin (Klein) or Vera (Wang) who are also noted fashionistas who are also avid collectors? Michael Carson, Unititled, 50x39in. oil and resin on panel

BEHIND THE VELVET ROPE May 2017
By Joe Alexander with Photographs by Patrick McMullan
Baywatch & The Lost City of Z Robert Pattinson of Twilight fame finally escapes the vampire series with a strong performance in the epic adventure, The Lost City of Z based on the best-selling book. Pattinson confessed, “I don’t know if I could ever really be cast in a heartthrob role apart from Twilight.” Wrong. The poetically shot film focuses on British explorer Percy Fawcett’s attempt to find an ancient, fabled city in the Amazon. Charlie Hunnam of Sons of Anarchy fame gives a breakthrough performance as a mucho soldier of fortune. He said, “I’m usually the guy who knocks everyone out in order to get the girl.” ……90s TV smash, Baywatch, has been remade into a full-length starring Dwayne “The Rock“ Johnson, Kelly Rohrbach, Priyanka Chopra, and a hunky Zac Efron who said “If the worst people can say about me is that I’m gay, I’ll be fine. I can handle it.” Pamela Anderson, the show’s original blonde sexpot said I’m a complete romantic - it’s why I always get married. Someone should really stop me.
Alien: Covenant & Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Guardians of the Galaxy 2 stars Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel and Chris Pratt, who joked. “I got punched by Orlando Bloom and I’m so embarrassed, I’d rather get farted on by David Hasselhof.” His co-star Zoe Saldana said, “Growing up, my dolls were doctors and on secret missions. I had Barbie Goes Rambo.” Alien: Covenant answers the questions raised from the first Alien film released in 1979. The scary movie stars Katherine Waterston and Michael Fassbender who confides, “I could never swim in the ocean after seeing Jaws.” James Franco, Fassbender’s co-star, quips, “sometimes when I’m sad I talk to my cat and he reminds me that I’m James Franco; then we dance.”

s we shed the effects of winter and head into the throes of bikini season here’s a roundup of how to prepare for the welcoming warm days of spring- whether it’s getting a new haircut, getting your chill on, or refreshing your physique.
LICARI CUTLER AT Domenico Vacca Expert colorist Louis Licari and revered celebrity hairdresser Rodney Cutler are trailblazers in changing the hair salon industry. By joining forces, they combined Licari’s uptown sophistication with Cutler’s edgy downtown aesthetic to become one of NYC’s leading salons. As their customer base has grown they recently opened on the second floor of Domenico Vacca to give an intimate space to their high profile clientele. Exuding the European sophistication of a Milanese atelier, this luxurious space allows clients to relax from the bustle of Fifth Avenue. Feeling more like a boutique hotel and private club they will offer the same services as their other busy outposts so customers can choose the perfect setting that suits their needs. 15 West 55 St, NYC | 646.290.7784 | Licaricutler.com
ALLISON GANDOLFO Allison Gandolfo is a leading colorist at the John Barrett Salon at Bergdorf Goodman. To keep her client’s tresses in perfect shape she changes hair products according to the season. For spring she suggests starting with a trim, because after a long winter filled with dry heat and cold air, your ends a small snip. Switch up the shampoo & conditioner. Moisture may be what you need now that winter is over, ask your stylist which shampoo & conditioner you should switch to next. For inclement weather try a ponytail, or braid with a hair accessory. Lighten up with spring by adding a few highlights and especially on the ends of your hair or around your face, less is more. Humidity can be our worst enemy this time of year, try adding a humidity fighting product to your hair care such as Ouidad climate control heat & humidity gel. RM: How did Pineda Covalin begin? RC: Pineda Covalin started 20 years ago in 1996 as a collaboration between my partner Christina Pineda and myself (Ricardo Covalin), when we were commissioned for a project by an anthropology museum. We had created artwork inspired by preColumbian designs from the Mayans and the Aztecs which we printed on silk and other fabrics and built a collection around it. At the time the museum didn’t have money to support the collection but we loved it and started creating scarves and ties with these motifs and brought it to other prominent museums in Mexico and later to hotels. But before that Christina and I studied at the same university and we chose to do our internship project together which was to work with two different artisan communities in Yucatan. Christina’s major was in industrial design and taught an indigenous how to create textile designs to sell, and they continue to produce to this day. When we started we were really focused on creating nice gifts and memories of Mexico that told our story which people could pass along to others. We started with pre-Columbian cultures, then we focused on Mexican nature such as the butterfly which has become an iconic motif for us. We also visited ethnic groups in Hidalgo that are still alive and partook in their sacred ceremonies such as eating peyote, their sacred plant, which enabled visions and patterns that were an extension of their soul which was the inspiration for their artwork. They would form patterns with little plastic peats or yarn and we used these for our patterns. All of our inspiration was born from Mexican culture whether it was from these sacred tribes or famous contemporary Mexican artists. We started with printed silks but started to apply these exclusive patterns to different products such as clothing,
handbags and jewelry and now eyewear, iPhone cases or lighters, and now we are starting to design hotel rooms. RM: How do you think the Mexican design scene is impacting the world now? RC: Well, I think that Mexico is one of the biggest cultures in the world now, and it is a country that has a lot to give, not only for fashion, but for gastronomy and art, with artists like Frida Kahlo. We have the culture and the history with pyramids and places that attracts visitors. So with the collaboration with Posadas it’s a very good way to familiarize visitors with our culture and show what is really happening and how beautiful our country is first hand and not just from the news. RM: Are you planning to expand in other countries soon? RC: Yes we are selling in other countries, primarily in Latin and South America now. Sometimes we tailor our collection to different countries such as Panama where we opened a store and produced a collection that combines something special from their culture along with something from Mexico. We have also created a special collection for Colombia, Chile, Panama, and Brazil. So it’s very interesting. RM: Are you going to expand to Europe or the US? RC: Yes, we have been in the US. We do have a store in Miami but it will be really interesting to go to other states like New York. We have sold before at Soho, but I think it would be better to have a joint venture to expand. Hopefully we will soon be there.
RM: Can you tell me more about the Spring 2017 collection? RC: This current collection is inspired by the monarch butterfly, which is one of our classic designs and for this season it resembles the embroidery of a monarch butterfly that was inspired by some of the artisans’ renditions. We also worked with the Mexican contemporary artist, Fernando Andriacci, whose art is very spiritual. He paints a mandala and when you are looking at the painting you connect with the energy that he intended for the viewer to experience while he was creating his body of work. For example, he created a special painting that sends subliminal messages of peace and gratefulness to Mexico. It’s a good vibe for Mexico. We took this painting, printed it on silk and created a clothing collection with the fabric. The idea is that once you are aware of the message, every time you wear it, you are sending good vibes to Mexico. I love that because it’s a very interesting way of blending contemporary art and fashion, so you have a purpose each time you wear it. If everyone was consciously aware of wearing a scarf or a piece of clothing that can send good vibes and peace to Mexico people can really change the way you are thinking by creating this positive energy. Our fall collection that launched in February was inspired by the hummingbird from the pre-Columbian culture of Mexico. It’s known as the bird of love because it’s meant to bridge communication, thoughts and feelings, from one person to another. So we did a whole collection around this. Pinedacovalin.com

The New York born character actor Rich Graff is having a moment. Here he explains why...
GEORGE WAYNE - I can’t believe you actually graduated from New York University with a degree in English Literature. Who would have thought. Talk about your life as a NYU student. RICH GRAFF - I actually received my bachelors degree in Literature & Writing from a SUNY school in upstate New York. I received my law degree from NYU. For me, going to school in NYC was all about my education. I did my partying early in life; going to nightclubs by the time I was 16. So by the time I turned 19, I had been there and done that, and decided to really focus on getting an education. NYC nightlife was so much better back then than it is now. I don’t even know if there are any true dance night clubs anymore. GW - An acting career was clearly not your first choice or you would have gone to Tisch. So how did the acting career take off ? Was it by lucky accident? RG - I honestly feel going to college for any artistic discipline tends to stifle people’s creativity. You often times have narrow minded teachers who believe in one or two theories and are unable to nurture and enable students to bring out the best of their own individual abilities. I credit my formal education in helping become a well read individual, however I was able to find several teachers in some of the best New York City acting studios who were able to help me find the true meaning of being vulnerable and make the story the most important part of my work. Wynn Handmann was very influential in my acting as was Peter Minor at T. Shrieber Studios. Penny Templeton was also a great teacher to work with. GW - Which, of course, leads to your big break-out role as Lucky Luciano in the acclaimed AMC mini-series -Making The Mob. Talk about this and what it has done for your career. RG - When an actor gets the lead role on a TV show for the first time one of two things usually
50 | resident.com
happens. The actor can foolishly believe that the mere fact of having a leading role will automatically propel them to the leading roles in film. We’ve seen this time and time again. I knew this was my opportunity to kill it on site every single second. I work 40 hours, every day except weekends. Most days were 18 hour shoots. I gel with my colleagues and we became a family. The product to me was much more than just a leading role, it was the most important chapter in my acting career. GW - How did you go about playing a legendary mobster? RG - I wanted Lucky to have authenticity, charisma, and an understated elegance. To have played the role with any type of forced aggression would have been the weakest and easiest choice anyone could’ve made. When you are the King, you simply have to be! GW - Coincidentally, you grew up in New York City mob enclave of Howard Beach. What was Rich Graff like as a fifteen year dude in that tough part of town? RG - I grew up in Howard Beach Queens and my best friend’s dad and older brothers ran the mafia in America. My best friend growing up was Peter Gotti, John Gotti’s youngest son. I grew up around Riggio’s three sons, and Jimmy Burke’s son; Jimmy Burke is the real name of Robert De Niro’s character in Goodfellas: Jimmy Conway. When your life is enveloped in that environment, you don’t show off about it and you keep yourself close to the best at all times. GW - Is it true you were a Gerber baby? Sounds like mere family myth. Talk about that. RG - it’s such an amazing story, I don’t believe it sometimes. But as my parents were bringing me out of the hospital, several days after I was born, there was an agent who approached them and offered to put me on the Gerber label. There must’ve been a nurse or doctor or someone in that hospital
who contacted this person and told him about this ugly, blonde haired, blue-eyed baby; wink-wink. GW - Talk about your latest film role which debuts at the Palm Beach Film Festival. What is that about? Who is in it? The experience meant what for you? RG - The name of the film is Black Wake and stars Tom Sizemore, Eric Roberts, Nana Gouvea, and of course myself. It’s an end of the world zombie film, which I never thought I would do, but Jeremiah Kipp had done such good work in the past, I jumped at the chance to work with him. And the film turned out to be amazing and the cast were absolutely professional. GW - And word is that you are also a trained lawyer? ! Your IQ must be much more superior to that of Sharon Stone. RG - I don’t know, Sharon Stone has a heck of a pair of legs! But yes, my schooling definitely helped with my memory. When you study that long and that hard, you begin to have a photographic memory. And I’m glad I did, because now I don’t have to sit and study a script very long. GW - And you are also a producer. What have you produced and what are you currently working on in your capacity as a producer? RG - I’m working on two films and two TV pilots. Amaranth is one of the films I am currently a producer on. It stars myself, Ryan Carnes, and several other young talented actors. It’s a sci-fi post apocalyptic film, and the script is amazing. We are slated to begin filming in Mississippi within a year. The next film I’m working on is called Mr. Chicago based on a gentleman named Gary Goehl, who was the right-hand man to Mayor Daley of the 1960s era in Chicago. It’s amazing how similar his life was to mine in the sense that he was a good guy trapped in a corrupt and murderous environment. Navigating his way through not only the Vietnam

war as a young man, but murder and city corruption when he returned. GW - You are the kind of character actor that the famous director Martin Scorsese would tend to nurture and cast in all his films. Why has that not happened? RG- It will happen, I guarantee it. My goal is not only to work with Marty, but also with Ridley Scott whom I admire tremendously. There are some actors who get their beginnings through nepotism, but they never last. If there’s one thing you cannot stop, it’s pure natural talent! GW - If you weren’t an actor you would probably be an Olympic snowboarder. True or false. RG- I did compete as a snowboarder, and I loved every minute of it. I’ve been on a mountain so high, I’ve snowboarded above the clouds! But as with any physical competition, your prime has a short shelf life. Storytelling, acting and entertaining have been something I’ve done from an early age. I was always the type of kid that would get up and perform a skit or just sing in front of a large strange crowd. GW - Have you ever been to the slopes of gorgeous Whistler, Canada? RG - I’ve been to Mount Trumbull and several other mountains in Canada but never Whistler, that’s one I definitely want to go to. But the Alps in Europe are just as good. My favorite mountain is Tiegne in France. GW - What would be your idea of apres ski? RG - Sipping Evian with my sunglasses on, while laying on a lounge chair at 7000 feet above sea level, watching everyone else go up. GW - One major acting talent you would love to work with and why? RG - Robert DeNiro . People tend to forget he’s done much more than just play a gangster. He
52 | resident.com
gave an enormous performance as a mentally disabled patient in Awakenings alongside Robin Williams, who was also outstanding. He’s another actor I wish I could’ve worked with. GW - “People I grew up with are either in jail or protective custody,’’ you once said. Do you feel blessed? RG - I do feel blessed. Somehow, someway I was able to not be tempted by the lore of quick easy money. Most of my friends are dead or hidden away somewhere. I’m very glad my parents instilled an internal compass to do right and live my life toward a greater fulfillment GW - I met Heather Graham once, on the set of the movie Boogie Nights, many, many years ago. What was it like working with her? RG - Let me first say that I do not get starstruck by anyone, because we’re all the same. But I was very excited when I was booked to play her boyfriend for My Dead Boyfriend. Keep in mind, John Corbett played the dead boyfriend. I played her boyfriend and her past. But Heather was great to work with and fun to hang out with. I remember practicing playing ourinstruments on set and Heather and I were making a mark of playing. Of course Anthony Edwards couldn’t get mad at her, so he told me to keep it down and then Heather gave him a look, which I thought was so cool. In the end, Mr. Edwards used it in the film end and it made for a very funny scene. GW - What movie were you shooting last year in Paris when you were on location there for weeks? RG - I was lucky enough to work on a French film which loosely translated is titled My American Lover. I play a young graduate student who consistently attracts older married women who want to end their marriages to be with him. It’s a great film and I can’t wait to see it. Producers are intending to release it at Cannes next year.
GW - What would be the ideal career scenario for your next five years? RG - I want to be in a position where I can pick and choose films with great scripts, real stories based on authentic human struggle and their successes. I also look forward to being part of the creative process. I’ve been lucky enough at this early stage of my career to have worked with directors that have given me freedom in rewriting scripts and assisting in directing scenes. GW - What sort of charity and philanthropy are you involved in? RG - I’m always involved in homeless shelters around New York City all year long. I also help in the parks department in creating an environmentally friendly environment. In the future, I hope to someday make enough money where I can assist underprivileged children get a great education at no cost. GW - You also claim to be a fairly accomplished chef. What would you consider to be your most accomplished culinary skill? RG - Absolutely! I was a latchkey kid, so both my parents didn’t get home until 6 or 7 PM. I started cooking on my own when I was about seven. I also grew up in a very Italian home-I’m a first generation Sicilian-American, so my mother, aunts, and grandparents cooked every day and we had dinner at the same time together every night. Cooking for me is not just a mode to eating, but it’s also therapeutic. GW - What is your middle name? RG - Carlogero. It’s a very Sicilian name, my grandfather’s name. But in English, it’s simply Charles. GW - Thank you Rich Graff for being such a good sport. RG - Thank you very much GW. Great talking to you and your fans. Thank you for having me!

EAST EDGEWATER Miami’s Burgeoning Neighborhood By Nina Kullmann | Renderings by Two Roads Development
W
hen it comes to investing in Miami real estate, Alicia Lamadrid, Regional Sales Manager of Cervera Real Estate, is an expert in the field of luxury real estate. As a specialist in Miami’s newest developments we tapped Lamadrid to find out more about the city’s booming East Edgewater neighborhood and where to find value in the ever-changing luxury real estate market. RM: Can you tell me a little about East Edgewater and what makes it attractive? AL: There are several factors that make East Edgewater an attractive opportunity for buyers. To start, it is the last neighborhood where buyers can purchase new waterfront condominiums, at a great value, in the center of Miami. Its bayfront location is only minutes from the beaches and Miami’s top neighborhoods. Just steps to the north is luxury shopping in Miami’s the Design District, to the west is Midtown and Wynwood, famous for its many galleries and rich street art. To the south, Downtown Miami is home to the American Airlines Arena, the PAMM, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, and the Patricia and Philip Frost Museum of Science. Every day we are witnessing the evolution of this neighborhood, due to the new developments and activity taking place in the urban core. I am excited for the completion of the Biscayne Line, a 3.75-mile waterfront bay walk that will connect East Edgewater to Brickell, the River, and Downtown Miami and allow residents to enjoy Miami’s tropical waterfront and interact with the Bay. East Edgewater is the only place in

the urban core where buyers can enjoy waterfront views in a new condominium and be in close proximity to their work and the exciting things taking place in the city. RM: Do you think there’s a lot of value on the Biscayne side vs. the Beach side? AL: Absolutely, I do. When you consider what the same dollars can buy you in Miami vs. Miami Beach it’s a nobrainer. For example, the average price for a 3 bed/3bath condominium units in all high rises built after 1990 in the South of Fifth neighborhood is $5.25 Million. At Elysee Miami, a luxury waterfront building in East Edgewater to be completed in 2019, the same 3bed/3bath average price is $1.85 Million. RM: Are there any new trends that you’re seeing in the Miami real estate market? AL: As Miami’s real estate market continues to mature we are starting to see that there is a growing community of full time residents that are having families and not moving away from the urban core to the “suburbs.” That is leading to some visionary developers seeing an opportunity in not just building large scale very dense buildings with the maximum number of units possible, but in curating exclusive residences for end user buyers with amenities designed for those users as well, including private dining rooms with a chef’s kitchen, children’s’ play areas, and luxury concierge services. RM: What kind of buyers are you seeing looking

for property in East Edgewater? AL: It really depends on the building. Since the area has experienced so much growth there is a little something for everyone. At Biscayne Beach, Two Roads Development’s soon-toopen project in the neighborhood, we saw a lot of the “neighborhood pioneer” type buyers. This is the person that has a history of buying in undervalued neighborhoods before they are fully
developed and once they see the value appreciate dramatically, they move on. I think this stands for the neighborhood as a whole. Currently at Elysee Miami, we are seeing more end users who are looking for a second home or for their permanent residence. RM: What are the advantages of each property?
AL: Biscayne Beach is a great building. It will literally bring “beach style living” to the city of Miami with a one-of-a-kind private Beach Club exclusively open to residents and members. The building will also feature a renowned restaurant and bar, as well as several pools with private cabanas and concierge services. All of these features will be set against the backdrop of sweeping Biscayne Bay views, with a public bay walk providing access to the water. The developer’s vision for Elysee Miami was to create a boutique building that would feel like a grand home. This intention is expressed in all the amenities, which were designed to be an extension of every resident’s personal living spaces. The waterfront building features only 100 residences ranging from three- to five-bedrooms and measuring between 2,200 and 4,000 square feet serviced by luxury concierge company Luxury Attache. The most exquisite common area is the full 30th floor Owner’s Lounge that was designed to house a cocktail lounge complete with a grand piano, private dining room with an adjoining chef’s kitchen, private library, theatre, teen room, and meeting area for private events. LIVE IN PARADISE Captiva Island
By Haiting Tan Photography by Peter Roskovensky
A
re you ready to wake each day in paradise? Located in Southwest Florida off the Gulf of Mexico, Captiva Island will leave you in awe at the island’s stunning sea views, nature trails and gleaming sunsets. Developing from a small fishing community, the island is now a tourist attraction. The island offers wondrous activities such as sunbathing, boating, fishing, shelling and if you’re fortunate enough, swimming with dolphins. Captiva Island has also become the inspirational shelter to many in the field of creative arts: Anne Morrow Lindbergh wrote her best-selling A Gift From the Seas during her stay on the island. Robert Rauschenberg, cited as a forerunner of American Pop Art, was a resident of the islands before his passing in 2008. The artist’s work was deemed contemporaneous with Andy Warhol, has been seen throughout the world. Rauschenberg’s home on Captiva was designed by his partner and assistant, Darryl Pottorf. “When he arrived in Captiva, he was surrounded by a swarm of butterflies. That’s what brought him to purchasing properties on the island,” said Mark Pace, Pottorf’s assistant said. His designs were acclimated towards Bob’s taste and he created a setting that could accommodate his art and lifestyle. “With the erosion of his beach house and Florida’s zoning laws, Bob decided to build a new house,” said Pace. As an enthusiast for pop culture, Rauschenberg embraced materials traditionally outside of an artist’s reach. Rauschenberg often covered a canvas with house paint, or ink the wheel of a car and run it over a paper to create a drawing. In the 1950s, he changed the world of art by introducing “combines” and solidified his place in art history. “As he gained more notoriety as an artist, he continued to purchase properties all over the island, leaving the Rauschenberg foundation with a little over 20 acres.” The idea of combining and
56 | resident.com
of noticing combinations of objects and images has remained the core of the famed artist’s work. “Bob truly loved Darryl. Darryl was one of the few artists who had major collaborations with Robert,” said Pace. Therefore; when the house was transferred to Darryl, his decision of selling the home did not come easy. “I’ve never known two people that were so in sync with each other. They had a great appreciation for the world and both loved learning about other cultures.” The home inspired by the beautiful surroundings provides a relaxing and tranquil atmosphere. Be prepared to take in the breathtaking view of the Gulf of Mexico from every angle, walk up the beautiful Brazilian wood staircase, and dance on the polished Corian floors throughout the
home. Equipped with a private elevator, gourmet kitchen, and featuring two master suites and private balconies, this home is everyone’s dream house. Pace said “Bob loved the island. He loved life, he kept going until the end.” Darryl hopes that the new owners will have the same passion for life and love for the island. Believing that “art can change the world,” the Rauschenberg Foundation has established an Artist in Residency program. The foundation hopes to continue to spread Rauschenberg’s legacy throughout the island and onto the world. Karen Bell | VIP Realty Group, Inc. The Bell Team | 239-851-0168 thebellteam.com

HELENE HENDERSON By Nina Kullman
K
nown for her farm to table cuisine, Helene Henderson’s Malibu Farm has become a cult favorite for dining in Malibu which is now making its way over to Miami. After a successive opening in Lanai, Helene is opening her third outpost this month at the Nobu Eden Roc Hotel Miami Beach. Here Resident Magazine chats with Helene Henderson on her culinary aesthetic and plans for her bi coastal opening. RM: How do you design your menu? HH: I like my dishes to be super simple. I don’t like to use too many ingredients or too much seasoning. I’m all about olive oil, salt and lemon and I like my food to be colorful and happy. I tend to stay away from brown food, I prefer my dishes to be bright and pop yet comforting and healthy. I wanted to bridge the gap between healthy and comfortable. RM: Do you feel that there is an overlap between Malibu and Miami? HH: The funny thing is when I first started I was in the backyard of my house which is like a mini farm. And when I started to look for a location I always imagined that this location would be in a garden. That was my vision. Then I found some places that had a garden and I tried to make it happen but I couldn’t. And when I ended up on the pier, it’s like being in a boat, which is as far away from a garden as you can possibly be. But it’s absolutely amazing to be ocean front also. RM: Are you originally from Malibu? M: No I grew up in Sweden actually. But I’ve been in California for about 30 years. RM: Do you bring some of the Swedish aesthetics to Malibu? M: I mean simplicity and complete meals are very Swedish. If somebody gives me a sandwich I feel extremely deprived. So at Malibu Farms we serve all of our sand-
wiches with a side and a small salad. I hate when somebody gives me a sandwich and now I have to buy a $14 salad or something green. I like to have something green on the plate. RM: How do you feel about being bi coastal? M: I’m learning to travel better, I’m not a great flyer so that’s really the biggest thing for me. For me it’s actually getting on the airplane. As long as I’m here I’m fine and that’s all fun, it’s the flying that’s always like ugh ok. But it has been really exciting. It has been a long marathon because we’ve been waiting for so long.
RM: Did you have a hand in the design of this. M: One of my friends did the original restaurant in Malibu, she thought about this one. RM: What kind of elements did you incorporate? M: We wanted to be casual but fun and wanted to bring in nature. This one is a little bit more upscale than our Malibu outpost but we are excited to see the finished project! Nobuedenroc.com
European Organic Food
INNOVATIVE ORGANIC PRODUCTS FROM EUROPE Given that the Summer Fancy Food Show is the largest and most prominent American trade show for food products offered by producers from around the world who focus on innovative solutions in production, among other things, it is only appropriate for the exhibitors from Europe to also show up at the event. For the second time, the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York will be attended by the representatives of the “Polish Ecology” Association, presenting a promotional programme titled “ECOEUROPE – QUALITY AND TRADITION”.
The guests who visited the “ECOEUROPE – QUALITY AND TRADITION” stand at the trade show last summer were able to learn about the idea behind this exceptional promotion, as well as get to know the product offer presented by the programme. All of them admired the organic food from Europe, admitting that it is worth propagating across the United States. It is already well-known in many countries, partially thanks to this promotional programme, which – by participating in trade shows and exhibitions in Asia and America – has become a platform for collaboration of European organic producers with distributors and traders from across the globe. Caring for the preservation of the culinary and agricultural heritage of the Old Continent by taking advantage of state-ofthe-art technological solutions and innovations in bio-food production is one of the main goals pursued by the creators of the “ECOEUROPE – QUALITY AND TRADITION” programme and &$03$,*1 ),1$1&(' :,7+ $,' FROM THE EUROPEAN UNION $1' 7+( 5(38%/,& 2) 32/$1'
everyone who is in charge of bringing it to life. All of them want to draw attention to the dynamic development of organic farming and processing in the European Union. The producers of organic food products – distinguished by the EU certificate, symbolised by the characteristic Euro-Leaf – draw on tradition, regionalism and culinary heritage in the process of production and processing, offering the consumers processed fruit and vegetables, as well as meat products produced according to the old recipes, using cutting-edge technology. Organic food producers from the European Union, Poland included, focus on innovative solutions, which allow for preserving the freshness, taste and nutritional benefits of their products. The three year-programme promoting organic food products from the European Union is carried out by the “Polish Ecology” Association of Processors and Producers of Organic Products, on the basis of cooperation with scientists from the best facilities, state-of-the-art laboratories and certification bodies. The Association also cooperates with the IFOAM organisation (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements). The goal of the “Polish Ecology” Association is to promote food products bearing the Organic Agriculture Certificate and the Euro-Leaf, characterised by exceptional flavour and quality, stemming from referring to traditions in farming, adhering to the principles and standards of organic farming, as well as the high standards of bio-crops and bio-processing, such as HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point), ISO (Quality Management Systems), as well as GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) and GHP (Good Hygienic Practice). “ECOEUROPE – QUALITY AND TRADITION” aims to promote the outstanding taste of organic products from the European Union; therefore, it is worth visiting the programme’s exhibition stand during this year’s Summer Fancy Food Show. Every day, the best chefs from Poland will present their own eco-shows, proving to everyone that organic fruit and vegetable farming, as well as animal production and processing, is the most dynamic branch of agriculture in the European Union, and organic products, with their truly exceptional taste, should find their way to every American table. You can find out more about the “ECOEUROPE – QUALITY AND TRADITION” programme at: www.eu-organic-food.eu

If you want a more chill night with less tequila and more clothes, you can still have a festive feast in the back room lined with painted skulls. The inventive menu features an array of Mexican grub, such as the Tostado Trio with Tequila Scorched Chipotle Shrimp, Coffee Glazed Shortrib - which I highly recommend - and Chicken Tinga served on crispy tortillas. Whether you like spicy or mild, there are enough delicioso options for everyone – make sure to try the Salsa Flight for a sampling of different salsa flavors, and an order of Flautas. Before you go, bid adios with the Adios Mo-Fo with their chocolate milkshake served with churros, chocolate ganache, caramel chicharrines, cinnamon sugar tortillas and Mexican M and M’s…Adios Mio! -- Julie Sagoskin
MEL’S BURGER BAR melsburgerbar.com Mel’s Burger Bar is one of New York’s top neighborhood joints with locations on the Upper East Side and Upper West Side. But who exactly is Mel? It’s simple actually, the Chef’s Grandfather. Mel believed that nothing can substitute a handshake when making a deal, a hug when a person is in need, and the sound of a group of friends laughing at the recollection of a past experience. Mel’s Burger Bar provides just that. “Whether you want to hang with friends watching the game while you drink, take your kid out for a milkshake, go on a casual but fun date, have some excellent craft beer, or one of the best burgers you’ve ever had, Mel’s hits the spot. It’s everything you want in a neighborhood joint,” says owner Steven Kay. To better connect the neighborhood Steven created Mel’s Brew Crew, which unsurfaced Manhattan’s most elite beer drinkers. Once you drink 50 of the beers Mel’s offers the bartender and a current crew member baptize you into the group. It’s not your typical baptism though, this one requires you to shotgun a beer while having beer poured over your head while the bells to Mel’s ring for the whole neighborhood to hear. And once you’re in, you can enjoy all of the crew’s perks from drink specials, to special dinners. Mel’s Brew Crew currently has over 800 members and growing each week.

What used to be known as The Back Room in the Park Hyatt Hotel, has now been completely renovated into an upscale dining experience. Chef Chad Brauze shines at Bevy with his background from the Culinary Institute of America and apprenticeships with top chefs like Ferran Adrià and Thomas Keller. Brauze created an extensive menu featuring items that are only locally sourced from trusted vendors. Chef Chad Brauze works alongside purveyors to create dishes in synchronous with the seasons. the menu also features premium dishes for two like Dry Aged Bone-in Bison Ribeye with shaved asparagus and a vinaigrette and a Whole Market Fish with chermoula sauce and charred Lemon. To finish off the meal, pastry chef Scott Cioe hand-makes each of his decadent desserts. The spring, the menu offers Pavlova and Éclairs in four different flavors. Besides these decadent pastries, the desserts also include classics like apple pie, cheesecake and even a candy bar for two. Additionally, the menu contains a list of five local farm fresh cheeses like Chevre or Barden Blue To coincide with these delicious plates, Bevy offers an exquisite array of craft cocktails, ciders, beer, and even saki. The restaurant’s award-winning wine director, Tristan Prat-Vincent has created a diverse list highlighting small producers from upand-coming regions throughout the United States and Europe. The ambiance of the space has been completely reimagined to fit the elegant, yet rustic menu.
Earthy tones and wood paneled walls create a comfortable yet upscale atmosphere. Being in the same neighborhood as places like the MoMa, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, the space was destined to be filled with sophisticated pieces of art. Bevy features it’s very own art installation filing up the center of the contemporary cocktail bar. From the creative minds behind Rain Room, Random International customized a magnificent light sculpture bringing earthy tones to the bar room. Surrounding much of the dining area is a custom piece by Moss and Lam Art Studio. THE MASTERMINDS BEHIND
RM: Can you tell me what makes your restaurant unique? RL: What makes us successful is that we don’t take our success for granted; we provide a very authentic experience of dining in the south of France. We make sure that any time a customer comes in they have an experience and not just a meal. We try to constantly also make them feel special and recognize them for the business they give us. Finally, I think that our success is built on staying fresh constantly,
RM: Compared to other top-notch French restaurants, what’s the difference compared to yours? RL: The key is entertainment. Bagatelle is more than just the meals that we serve. We have great art on the wall, great DJs, you can have a great meal and also have some fun and dance no matter the hour.
not staying still and making sure that everything evolves, including the menu. As we keep opening other venues, we still have a very neighborhoodlike feel. We make sure that we know our guests, and remember them. These are all the reasons why Bagatelle is so successful.
We finally opened in 2008 and six months later the whole world was in shambles because the biggest financial crisis started and a lot of restaurants were closing. Yet we ended up rising because people recognized that no matter what happened,
BAGATELLE By Nina Kullmann

ith outposts in every major jet set party city around the world, Bagatelle is known throughout the world for their boozy brunches filled with the beau monde. This quintessentially French Mediterranean hotspot can be found in NYC, Dubai, Sao Paolo, Rio, St. Barth, Miami, Punta del Este, St Tropez, and opening this spring in Monte Carlo, bien sur. Opening in time for the famous Monaco Grand Prix and summer Cote d’Azur season, we spoke to Bagatelle’s co-founder, Remi Laba on his secret for success and how Bagatelle has become a magnet for the rich and famous, attracting the international jet set crowd for over a decade. RM: What was your original concept for Bagatelle? RL: In 2007 we wanted move from our background in nightlife to something more restaurant driven and we basically wanted to create a restaurant that is very European; that resembles both myself and my partner, Aymeric Clemente, as we are both French and from the South. We thought that bringing this essential environment into an urban destination like New York could be fun. That was the initial idea. Secondly, we wanted to make sure that world hospitality was at the forefront of the industry because we felt that customers felt that they needed to thank the owners or doormen to get into trendy restaurants, which we thought that was a bit strange. We always believed that restaurants, whether its owners, its staff or anyone involved, should be very grateful towards guests, no matter how successful the restaurant is. We also wanted to create a trendy restaurant with a spectacular atmosphere that is also known for their great food.

RM: Was it challenging to establish the brand? RL: I’d like to say yes but for us it wasn’t. We were lucky as customers endorsed us right away.

when they came to Bagatelle it brought a lot of vitality to their life…they had great times… if they had a bad day it would make their days a bit sweeter and it was a great place to celebrate life. Our first customers became big fans of the brand and big ambassadors. We stayed true to ourselves and our values. The real challenge is to stay relevant and to maintain the relevance. I think that’s more of a challenge. RM: How do you maintain your status? RL: We keep bringing new things to Bagatelle, whether it’s a new artist on display, new menu
RM: Has it always been your dream to own a restaurant? RL: My partner always wanted to open a restaurant. And from the moment we were in business together we always wanted to create everlasting memories through events created for our guests, whether it was in a nightclub or in a restaurant. We wanted to create a restaurant brand that people remember, cherish and come back for. To be able to see guests leave with a smile on their face is what makes us proud about what we achieved and it also makes us love our job.
is because people gather around the table and they share a fantastic moment; in France we call that the joie de vivre, happiness of living. So for us this was the main driver. We wanted those meals to be shared and not just a place where you go to and eat. RM: Do you have a favorite dish? RL: I have several favorite dishes. On our menu, anywhere in the world the Gnocchi Truffés à la Parisienne is my absolute favorite, it’s a classic. And from our main courses I am a big fan of the Poulet Fermier Rôti et Truffé (truffled roasted chicken). I love that dish! RM: You seem to know each other well. Do you often agree with each other or is it challenging at times, as well? RL: With every partnership, there is agreement and disagreement, but when we disagree it means that we have two different ideas and the compromise is usually what makes Bagatelle unique. But, we also respect each other’s skills very much. We do very different things. What makes the restaurant special is that Aymeric understands food better than anyone I know. When it comes to designing menus, even if we disagree he’ll prevail. When it comes to business, marketing and so on, that’s my field. But, obviously, we have many long conversations over things, but Bagatelle would not be what it is if it wasn’t for differences, as well.
items or new locations in key destinations like Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo. We also try to keep close to our customers, and be very involved in their daily lives, so that they don’t forget about us and we certainly don’t forget about them.
RM: You said that you’re from the south of France, which explains your love for the French cuisine, obviously. RL: Absolutely. I think that one of the reasons why we stayed true to the South of France cuisine
RM: Is there anything else you would like to share? RL: What makes Bagatelle special is that we have a great collective of fantastic sous-chefs that have all spent 10 or 15 years at Daniel or other renowned restaurants. That is one of the greatest unknown facts about Bagatelle; the high-level professional chefs we have working in every one of our kitchens. Bistrotbagatelle.com

rom the heart of Florence to the heart of Miami’s MiMo district, O’Munacillo makes its stateside debut. Recreating and interpreting traditional and authentic Neapolitan dishes, ‘O Munaciello uses local produce and fine imported goods to create dishes found nowhere else in the South Florida region. Its pizzas are even baked in a made-to-measure handmade brick oven, imported from Naples, Italy. The inventive Miami menu will mirror the Florence restaurant’s menu every season, consisting of signature dishes showcasing Neapolitan flair, including Agnolotti, homemade meat ravioli on creamy potatoes and smoked Buffalo cheese and Seafood Scialatiello, a pasta platter for two, with clams, mussels, shrimps, calamari and Piennolo cherry tomatoes, to name a few. Expect several specialty pizzas from the brick oven with an innovative twist such as Tonno (fresh tuna, mozzarella, cherry tomatoes), Ricotta E Salamino Piccante (ricotta cheese, spicy salami, mozzarella and tomato sauce), Cornicione Di Ricotta (tomato sauce, mozzarella, ricotta cheese- stuffed

The true specialty of the house is the black dough “Carbon” pizza prepared with activated charcoal aiding with indigestion, reducing intestinal problems, lowering cholesterol levels and helping to treat hangovers. The design of ‘O Munaciello Miami is a modern reinterpretation of the Florence outpost, including the 24’ vaulted brick ceilings, warm, pastel colors on the walls and trim and custom-made artwork from artisans in Naples, Italy. Even the plates, chairs and tables were handmade and imported. ce of the warmth of Southern Italian culture,” says restaurateur Valentina Borgogni, who owns and operates both the Florence and Miami locations. “The restaurant welcomes guests to celebrate any occasion and take in its distinct sensory aspects from the food to the décor and the music. We chose to open our first-ever outpost in Miami because the warm culture and climate is similar to Naples, Italy.” As soon as guests enter ‘O Munaciello Miami,
they will be greeted by a handcrafted life-sized statue imported from Naples, Italy of the “‘O Scartellat,” meaning a hunchback. According to Neapolitan lore, touching or rubbing the back of the statue brings good luck. NEW YORK PRIME BEEF By Rodney Sparrow
N
ew York Prime Beef says they sell the best steak on the planet. “It’s not a humble statement; I’m aware of that, but I believe it,” says founder Vinny Pacifico. “If you can’t tell me that’s the best steak on the planet we didn’t do our job. If somebody is going to put down a $200, $400, $600 dollar bottle of wine for dinner, don’t you think they want the best steak? It just goes hand in hand. That’s who we’re going after.” The company dry-ages their steaks in a new stateof-the-art facility in the Bronx. Their butchers, the best in the country, custom cut each order, which they ship via Federal Express anywhere in the world.
Japanese Kobe One customer recently ordered $8,000 worth
of Japanese Kobe - that’s six to eight steaks, depending upon how thick they are cut - to be delivered locally, to Westchester, New York. The delivery address turned out to be the client’s Gulfstream Jet. “I don’t know where that went in the world, but I was pretty happy,” Pacifico says. “ Isn’t that cool? Wherever they were going they were taking the steaks with them.”
Chef Josh Tanner “It’s expensive and worth it,” says chef Josh Tanner, Pacifico’s partner, who is in charge of sourcing, selecting and aging New York Prime Beef’s products. “You’re spending more money, but you really are getting the crème de la crème. It’s the one percent of the one percent.” Chef Josh Tanner
In their first year, they turned to the Hamptons to get their name out, partnering on luxury events Cowboy Cut, perfect for spring and summer grilling
with Rolls Royce, Maserati, Ferrari and other brands. “The Hamptons is where these people are in the summer that can afford this kind of product,” says Tanner. It worked well, and they will again have a presence around the Hamptons this summer, offering their wares at events where people can actually taste the steaks. They’ve partnered with a local rum brand for a tasting at Shagwong Tavern in Montauk in May. That’s the easiest way for us to sell them,” Tanner says. “It’s one of those things where I literally have people say, ‘You call it the greatest steak on the planet,’ and they laugh and they say, ha! And then, they eat the steak and they say, ‘Wow, that’s literally the best steak I’ve ever had in my life’” he says. “They go to Peter Luger’s once a week and this is the best steak they’ve had in their life. I’m fairly happy with a response like that.”
Chef Ricardo Cardona They’ve also done events with renowned chefs, including Ricardo Cardona, who in addition to running restaurants privately cooks for everyone from Latin American presidents to entertainers, and is also the chef for the New York Yankees. “Ricardo uses New York Prime all the time,” Tanner says, adding, “He’s the guy who Marc Anthony has cook him dinner every night.” Newyorkprimebeef.com

For dessert, diners can indulge in Churros with Nutella dipping cream or the toasted coconut Tres Leches Cake. The restaurant sits behind the 400 Rabbits Tequila Bar, which is reminiscent of a prohibition-era speakeasy. Bartenders mix fun favorites for diners that perfectly complement any meal. The tequila bar carries more than 100 types of tequila producing a unique signature cocktail program and an extensive tequila menu consisting of sangrias, punches and frozen drinks. Union Cantina’s festive atmosphere incorporates both the sleekness of the Hampton’s high society with the rustic beauty of Mexican culture. The dark woods are balanced by the bright cerulean colored walls, and are also decorated with Mexican artwork. Adventure & Luxury Awaits IN
ANTIGUA By Brad Balfour
F
or someone deprived of the experience of a Caribbean vacation, Antigua offers an ideal starting point. There’s all the expected elements to any seaward scenario — beautiful ocean views, fresh air, lots of sun and sandy beaches, but so much more as well. Pronounced “An-tee’ga”, this former colony sits in the Caribbean Sea (17 degrees 5’ north and longitude 61 degrees 45’), a 108-square mile limestone and coral island recognized for its many coves, bays, turquoise-colored waters and 365 white beaches — one for each day of the year, as the natives claim. To its south lie Montserrat and Guadeloupe; to the the north and west are Nevis, St. Kitts, St. Barts and St. Martin/ Maarten. Barbuda (Bar-byew’ da), its sister island, lies 27 miles northeast with a land area of 62 square miles — and then there’s a scattering of much smaller land masses that are also under its umbrella. Largest of the Leeward Islands and furtherest out of the Caribbean Island arc, this small country was emancipated from England in 1981. Though a young nation, it has an ample history which laces it with an old-world Brit-colonial
charm. And, thankfully, that heritage means it hasn’t yet become overdeveloped so it not only has luxurious resorts but a capital and countryside that remains untrammeled. So for those only seeking to slink away from the modern urban hustle and bustle, this location offers all those earthly pleasures easily found through a stay in one of the island’s more sumptuous retreats, in this case, Sandals Grande Antigua, one of the 14 resorts run by this Caribbean-based company. Spread across several acres adjacent to the capital of St. John, a couple could be ensconced there the whole time, engorging on all the dishes coming from an assortment of restaurants, cafes and beachside lounges. That’s not to say you have to be fat and horny to enjoy yourself, there’s time to splash and play as well. Any Antigua experience should include some daytime outdoor adventures as well as nightly culinary feasts. And for the first night, that’s exactly what was done, stuffing face at Coconut Grove, a nearby outdoor restaurant perfect

for adjusting to the transition from NYC cold to a seasonal temperate climate. Seafood is the speciality and seafood it was — coconut shrimp, conch fritters, crab cakes and of course, a huge lobster. The adventure side of the Island experience meant getting out a New Yorker’s comfort zone. And that too was divided into two experiences — on land and into the sea. Traveling to the southern coast for a watery experience, Horizon Eco-Fantasies had fun in mind if you are able to tax muscles and swimming skills. You begin by kayaking out through the mangroves to a skiff that takes divers out to waters which float 10 feet or so above the reefs. The company offers a guide for participants to paddle out in these sit-on kayaks to the beach where another guide leads participants to a boat that brings snorkelers to Cades Reef — just offshore of the mangroves. There everyone dons snorkels, masks, and fins while the boat hopped over warm water -- a relief from the growing midday sun’s heat. For the inexperienced, jumping in can offer quite a challenge, especially because they didn’t really instruct the inexperienced. Both fun and daunting, South Coast Horizon’s Eco Park offers these half-day excursions which also includes snacks, and drinks. Of course any strenuous activity, especially in a place like Antigua, requires a healthy amount of
consuming. That was fulfilled at Turner’s Beach Bar where all the sea food can be had sitting under a roof on an open deck with full service bar behind it. After a fulfilling meal -- and a little souvenir buying -- then it was time for more earthly activity. What better way to close out a day than with a late afternoon equestrian stroll. Well-equipped to manage small group horseback riding sessions, the Sun Fire Riding Academy — headed by the dreadlocked Sun Fire — offers even the most inexperienced rider a fun experience. Thanks to his able crew, this stroll engendered a pleasant exchange between rider and animal, even if only for the short time. With a stable of friendly older horses by Fort James Beach, the experience presented a challenge of managing the reins while connecting with the horse. If you have trepidation mounting a horse, the handlers were pretty experienced in managing tourists of many sizes — and they take it all in stride (so to speak). Followed nose to tail, the horse and lead handler take the gang on a leisurely beachside walk. But when they broke into a stride, the real horse riding experience really confronts you, and your butt. Van drivers then bring tourists back to the luxury of Sandals, ready to be well satiated by an extended dinner at Mario’s, its flagship restaurant. There you can dig deeply into a menu that offers cuisine ranging from seafood favorites, Italian styled dishes, steaks and more.
Besides water adventures, there’s another chance get into the island experience, jungle style. An expansive rainforest and island countryside offers ample opportunity to test one’s mettle -and the ability to fly. The Antigua Rainforest Zip line Canopy Tour definitely forced a strenuous testing. Antigua’s national park has a 13-stage zip line with eight different obstacle courses at the end, especially challenging when the staff test participants while they try to complete it. The zip line goes through a thick mass of trees and vines with the ground maybe 50 to a 100 feet below. So no wonder you bond with other zippers as you fly -- or in some cases, stall -- station to station. As you get to end of the run, and obstacles get more challenging, everyone feels even more securely hooked onto the main cable, so no one’s likely plunge to the earth below. Trying such an effort makes for an excuse to fill the belly again; Beach Limerz Bar & Restaurant provided ample authentic fodder. Afterwards, this nearby beachside bar provided an thorough taste of local foodie favorites. Dishes include dukuna, saltfish, pepper pot and fungi. Made of pickled beef, chicken or pork, potatoes and broth — topped with greens — pepper pot is the most famous. Fungi are corn fritters and dukuna, a local favorite, is made with coconut, sweet potatoes, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Hosts/owners Barry and Gail Edwards welcome visitors to sit at its big communal tables, where one can eat and meet other people there; a giant wraparound bar completes the experience with an ample view of the beach. After a relaxing time enjoying the local fare, it was time again to taste classic cuisine, Sandals style. At night, the various on-restaurants offers time to commune with fellow visitors from all over the world. Daytime offers the challenge of trying all the different choices throughout the day. And one other excursion really gave the best overview of this island sojourn — the catamaran tour sponsored by Sandals itself. For two hours, the boat follows the shoreline stressing just how many beaches Antigua has along with its celebrities — such as designer Giorgio Armani’s — who vacation there as well. But sadly, just as one begins to settle into this life, the trip is over far too quickly.

An off-the-beaten track destination, Myanmar has just recently begun to attract more tourists as a result of all the momentous changes beginning in 2015 when Myanmar voted in its first democratically elected government in more than half a century. As the country opens up and invites tourists to discover all it has to offer, Myanmar remains at heart a rural nation of traditional values, an untainted and authentic place replete with natural beauty and history. One of the best ways to explore Myanmar’s diverse landscapes, villages, and gracious locals is by embarking on a journey along the Irrawaddy River (also known as the Ayeyarwady River) aboard a river cruise. hile many would associate Thailand and specifically Bangkok, with the now iconic story “The King and I”. It could be argued that is more a “Tale of Two Cities”. Before Bangkok became the capital of Thailand in 1782 and emerged as the center of Thai government. Carry forward her rich history and her modern sensibilities and you can understand why Bangkok embodies a duality reflected in her palaces, temples and monuments; each juxtaposed by soaring ultra modern skyscrapers. This is not lost on the traveler, allowing for odd sense of vertigo as past and present intermingle in a kaleidoscope of sights, smells and sounds. Bangkok is also a city marked by luxury and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel best tells this tale of two cities. The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok is deeply rooted in her past with a keen eye on the future, as evidenced by a renovation of the historic Authors’ and Garden Wings. The project comprised a
significant room reconfiguration resulting in the creation of new spacious suites, including a Grand Royal Suite in the Authors’ Wing and twelve other suites reimagined in every way.
140-year-old building’s restored original open balcony affords unrivaled vistas over the tropical gardens of the Authors’ Wing and the majestic River of Kings.
Occupying the entire first floor of the renowned Authors’ Wing, which was the original Oriental Hotel of 1876, a truly striking addition and one that caters to a select clientele is the six-bedroom, nearly 6,500 square foot Grand Royal Suite aptly recognized as Bangkok’s grandest. Complete with private elevator access, it incorporates the one-bedroom, Royal Suite and the adjoining Ambassador Suite with two bedrooms, as well as three equally lovely guest rooms for family and entourage.
Equally impressive are the new Garden Suites, many with a modern split level layout that still pays homage to an opulently adorned past. All boast floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the river and gardens and include a lounge, dining room, pantry, powder room and a balcony. The bedroom features a large marble bathroom with separate bathtub, a walk-in shower, double vanity and a walk-in closet. The suites’ contemporary interior design combines the hotel’s unique colonial inspired heritage and Thai culture.

An equally spectacular option is the Spa Studio by Mandarin Oriental. Located in the newly refurbished Garden Wing it consists of four luxuriously designed treatment rooms offering powerful, effective and less time consuming treatments, for ladies and gentlemen in a calming yet sophisticated setting. Featuring facial treatments designed to deliver exceptional results using QMS Medicosmetics. Just beyond the Spa is the Fitness Centre offering a highly personalized approach to fitness. Muay Thai is increasingly popular among locals, expats and visitors to Thailand, and The Mandarin offers Muay Thai sessions that are individually tailored to each guest and conducted by skilled trainers who are experts in Western boxing as well. Perhaps the real magic of this property is in the realization that behind every twist and turn of the beautifully designed and manicured resort is a new surprise. The Authors’ Lounge is only one such example and stands proudly as one of
Bangkok’s, if not Thailand’s, most photographed locations. Originally an open roofed garden, the Authors’ Lounge now features a glass roof and is the perfect place to enjoy afternoon tea. In keeping with the great literary heritage of the hotel, the recently restored Authors’ Lounge also has a new collection of photographs of the many famous writers who have stayed at the hotel. In addition, the heritage authors, Noël Coward, James Michener, Somerset Maugham and Joseph Conrad, are now immortalized by four new private lounges. This historical landmark continues to reveal her secret past in the Bamboo Bar. Originally opened in a tiny room in the hotel’s Authors’ Wing in 1953, the Bamboo Bar has grown into an institution frequented by high society. The essence of the old bar inspired the new design with bamboo utilized throughout. Hanging on the wall are historical images of the hotel bar, and pictures of former patrons, including iconic musicians and singers the likes of Ray Charles,
Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Eartha Kitt, Dionne Warwick, Eric Clapton, Bryan Ferry and Mick Jagger; and actors such as Audrey Hepburn, Marlon Brando, Sean Connery and Roger Moore. More surprises await guests across the river from the hotel at the signature Sala Rim Naam Thai restaurant offering a delicious choice of traditional Thai dishes and a spectacular cultural performance and dance show nightly. Sala Rim Naam has always been a delightful experience for visitors to Bangkok, bringing together aspects of traditional Thai culture, including food, music, performing arts, service and decoration in an authentic setting. With the lure of Southeast Asia, and more specifically that of Bangkok is at an all time high, The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok is a must see, must stay, must have experience for any traveler with a respect for the past, an eye on the future and desire to be pampered without apology.

If you ever decide to venture off property, book an excursion on the Aztec trail with visits to the Palace of Cortés and the ruined cities of Xochicalco and Taxco, famous for its silversmiths. Visit Cuernavaca’s cathedral, which stands in a large high-walled compound. The cathedral was built in a grand, fortress-like style in an effort to impress, intimidate and defend against the natives. Las Mañanitas Hotel is truly a tranquil and luxurious getaway and is highly recommended during your next trip to Mexico. lasmananitas.com.mx

and bars located in the hotel, each with their own specialty. The most romantic is La Terrazza perched on the expansive terrace with stunning views of Lake Como where the divine cuisine is only matched by the magical atmosphere. The highlight of this restaurant is explained in a few words: Maestro Gualtiero Marchesi. Together with Grand Hotel Tremezzo’s Executive Chef Osvaldo Presazzi, they create an unforgettable dining experience offering the finest and tastiest examples of Italian cuisine. La Terrazza’s menu changes with the seasons to take advantage of local produce creating traditional dishes enlivened
with a touch of creativity. At sunset, the rose tinted Grigne peaks and the twinkling lights of Bellagio offer a sight no guest can ignore. The saffron gold risotto at La Terarazza is adorned with an edible gold leaf – a must-expereince dish. The “riso, oro e zafferano” (literally – “rice, gold and saffron”) was born in 1981 and is considered by all critics the first real gourmet dish to appear on the menu of an Italian restaurant, thanks to the creativity of the absolute genius Gualtiero Marchesi that just 4 years later gained, thanks to this dish, his third Michelin star – being the very

Since 2014 when Marchesi closed his historical restaurant in Erbusco to move to Milan, the “riso, oro e zafferano” has been served exclusively at La Terrazza. The Flowers Pool is embedded in a beautiful garden that feels like the Garden of Eden and the T Spa Infinity feels like heaven with its zen like calmness offering eternal relaxation. Take an exhilarating dip in the cool waters of Lake Como or sunbathe at the private T Beach with panoramic views extending to Bellagio. CHAMBER MAGIC AND CUISINE & CONFESSIONS By Barry Bassis

his uncanny ability to figure out their locker combinations or to divine their favorite drink and pour it on the spot.
Cohen has been dubbed the “Millionaires’ Magician” and has been dazzling audiences for 16 years in a private suite at the Waldorf Astoria. Many notables have attended, including Warren Buffett, Stephen Sondheim, and Woody Allen.
No one knows how he does it but Cohen has been practicing his art since childhood.
When the Waldorf closed for renovations, Cohen moved “Chamber Magic” to another classy venue one block away: the Lotte New York Palace, located on Madison Avenue. “Chamber Magic” is performed in the Madison Room, a drawing room located in the Villard Mansion. With nineteenth-century oil paintings on the walls, Italian marble columns on both sides of the performance space and original chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, audiences know they are in for a treat. Cohen recreates the style of nineteenth century star magicians. He is not an escape artist like Houdini. Rather, he stumps the audience with

The show plays five times every weekend – Fridays and Saturdays at 7 pm and 9 pm, with an additional show at 2 pm on Saturdays. Ticket prices are $150 for first row seats, $125 for the second and third rows, and general admission at $85. The show runs 90 minutes. For tickets, go to http:// chambermagic.com. The dress code is cocktail attire and the minimum age limit for guests is 12 years old. “Cuisine & Confessions” is another one-of-a-kind show, the latest creation by Montreal-based circus company Les 7 Doigts de la Main (The 7 Fingers). This unique entertainment combines acrobatics with food and recipes. The show was presented at NYU’s Skirball Theater in association with the Tilt Kids Festival, a production of the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF), and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.
“Cuisine & Confessions” was written and directed by Shana Carroll and Sébastien Soldevila. The script incorporates the experiences of the performers. Some are pleasant and some quite dark, especially Matias Plaul’s soliloquy about his father, whom he never knew, being seized and presumably murdered by the military junta in Argentina. The cast members not only speak about food but cook banana bread and other treats and share them with the audience at the end. The acrobatics are phenomenal. In addition to defying gravity, they even demonstrate how to crack an egg with one hand. The catchy soundtrack was created specifically for “Cuisine & Confessions” by Spike Wilner, working with music director Soldevila. All in all, the show resembles a Cirque de Soleil presentation but without the pretension. In other words, they just keep in the good parts. Make sure to catch Les 7 Doigts de la Main whenever they return to New York.

oundabout Theater is presenting at the American Airlines Theater a Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s “The Price.” Attention must be paid but perhaps not to the character Miller intended as the center of interest.
Max (Dave Hearn), and a stage manager (Nancy Zamit) pulled into the action when the female lead (Charlie Russell) becomes temporarily indisposed. Mark Bell maintains the momentum through two acts, thanks to the crack timing of the energetic cast.
The action takes place after the death of a family patriarch. Victor Franz and his wife Esther are
Joan of Arc is believed to have inspired more works of art than any other woman in history. There are films by Carl Dreyer and Robert Bresson, plays by
meeting with a furniture dealer to clean out the apartment. Victor is a policeman near retirement, who sacrificed to take care of his father (a victim of the Great Depression). At the end of the first act, Victor’s more successful brother, Walter (a wealthy surgeon) suddenly appears. The siblings had had no contact in years and Victor feels resentment because he sacrificed his own dreams to provide for his parent, while Walter abandoned them to pursue his own self-interest. While the conflict between the brothers is the heart of the play as written, the character who dominates the first act and walks off with the show is the elderly furniture dealer, Gregory Solomon, played by Danny DeVito (making his Broadway debut). The other three—Mark Ruffalo, Tony Shalhoub and Jessica Hecht—are estimable, but it is DeVito dispensing wisdom with a Yiddish accent who makes the strongest impression. Derek McLane’s set with the furniture (in other words, the past) hanging over the characters’ heads is an inventive touch. “The Play That Goes Wrong” (at the Lyceum Theater) by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields is a transfer of a West End hit that won the Olivier Award for best comedy. This is a zany farce in the tradition of “Noises Off” about an amateur dramatic troupe putting on an Agatha Christie style country house murder mystery in the 1920’s. The characters in the play-within-a-play include an unusually animated corpse (Greg Tannahill), a weary detective (Shields), a butler with pronunciation problems (Sayer), a sound man (Ron Falconer) who is a big fan of Duran Duran, a novice actor

George Bernard Shaw and Jean Anouilh plus much more. Now, the team of David Byrne (music, lyrics and script) and Alex Timbers (director) and Stephen Hoggett (choreographer) are presenting “Joan of Arc: Into the Fire” at the Public Theater. Those expecting another superb musical on the order of “Here Lies Love,” the team’s musical about Imelda Marcos, may be disappointed. Certainly, they will not be let down by Jo Lampert as the heroine. She has the right androgynous look for the saint who dressed in male combat attire and her alto singing voice never falters. The problem is that Byrnes’ songs are, for the most part, not very compelling. “Amelie” was a hit French movie in 2001 and it has been adapted into a Broadway musical at the Walter Kerr Theater. Phillipa Soo stars in the role that made Audrey Tatou a star. Soo has already become a top leading lady in “Hamilton” and “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.” Although she still sings beautifully and Savvy Crawford is very good as the young Amelie, the whimsical musical seems mostly a misfire. The title character is withdrawn and, when she finally meets her love interest, Nino (Nino (Adam Chanler-Berat), there is not much excitement. Similarly, composer Daniel Messé’s songs are pleasant but not memorable and don’t convey much of a French flavor.

Dr. Sandhu - After Neograft
Think Neograft!! Visit New York’s Neograft Specialist and consult with Dr Sandhu. See how Neograft technology provides a natural undetectable hair transplant. Unlike the older “strip methods” there is no tufted dolls hair look. Neograft does not remove any of the scalp so there is no scar. Only local anesthesia is required providing a very quick recovery with little down time. If you’re thinking of Hair Transplant you owe it to yourself to consult with a doctor who has benefited from the procedure himself and teaches hair transplants to other doctors.

WELCOME TO
SPRING IN THE HAMPTONS By Jane Pontarelli
T
his month my loyal readers and animal lovers, I introduce you to, Stella, Keiki and Molly, and yes they are the Princesses of Mecox Beach, Located at the end of Jobs Lane in Bridgehampton. They can be found holding court on the sand. These 3 have their loyal 4 legged friends and humans, and of course their Mom. They jog and swim with their friends and family, yes they do have the life so many of us aspire to. Summertime and there livin’ is easy for these three fur babies. For there is so much to see and so much to do. Each minute of their days are filled with them savoring their magnificent season. But these girls can be found now year round, For these three girls, Stella, Keiki & Molly, are now local princesses for the Hamptons. And yes my dear friends, there is a year round community out East. A few years ago family and girls decided to live year round and never looked back, for they had found their paradise. When I meet Stella and her 2 legged mother and I instantly feel in love with them for they were riding a motorcycle. Stella was even in my coffee table book, “International Pet Scene”. Stella’s mommy and I became fast friends and enjoy golfing, lunching, and raising money for Pet Charities and Breast Cancer, and other social activities together. We enjoy hot dogs and parties on the beach. The girls can be often found, hanging in the kitchen, with their father as he is preparing a banquet, with vegetables grown from his garden. They are a big help in the kitchen as nothing ever hits the floor. The fur babies mother has always loved animals more than her human counter parts. You can say that she has always felt this way since she was a little girl. Mom explained to me that since she has matured and aged- having animals in her life creates a fullness and purpose and a dimension that makes the aging process all that more palatable, my sentiments exactly. Still to this day, when either of us pass by a road kill or animal laying lifeless, it breaks our hearts

and we shriek with pain. Some of us are just natural born animal lovers. But to be truthful, all animal lovers are people filled with compassion, and selflessness. Combine these two ingredients, and you have a perfect platform for finding love, kindness, and peace.
4. They make us feel like we are always #1-even when we know we are not… 5. No matter what the situation, what’s for dinner, or what the weather is like, and including but not limited to: they always acknowledge and mind us- animals love us unconditionally and wholly.
Why do all of us who are animal lovers seem so unselfish and responsible to our four legged buddies who share our lives? So willing to take responsibility for their health, well-being and their particular own aging process? The answer is simple: They make us HAPPY!
In closing if you want to meet the girls they can be found year round jogging on the beach walking the streets of the Hamptons and living the good life.
And, being happy is a state of mind most people would like to achieve. With that in mind, would you rather be a happy person with an animal or cuddle up with your new pocketbook? To us, there is no contest. Here are five simple reasons why animals are way better than people, and why our four legged pals make us happy: 1. They are covered in fur! 2. They can’t talk- and they can’t talk back 3. They are honest with their feelings, non-judgmental and mindful of life’s every moment
