GIVING THANKS IN A SEASON TO GIVE

Makeup and hair courtesy of Bestsyelisa.com • NYC’s At Home Hair & Makeup Glam Squad

A

s the leaves changed color this month and we head into the holiday season, I thought of the interplay of light and shadows. To understand the true meaning of thanks and the ability to give, sometimes our journeys take us through the shadowy depths of life to understand what we are really thankful for and what makes life meaningful through giving. It’s not that many times in your life that you encounter someone as inspirational as Sam Childers. Traveling down the darkest road in life as a drug dealer and shotgun runner for drug dealers to becoming a savior for orphans in Africa is a truly remarkable journey. He has seen all walks of life and found his real calling by saving one life at a time. Another star on the verge of greatness is the talented Michael Shannon whose talent has no bounds. With multiple projects in the works including the highly anticipated Tom Ford film, Nocturnal Animals with Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal we will see of Michael Shannon on the silver screen. Perhaps an Oscar nod in the works? The dichotomy of black and white seen all over the Fall 2016 runways, was the inspiration for our fashion and beauty spreads this month. The mysterious allure of Old Hollywood embodied the mood to capture the timeless elegance of holiday jewels this season. And of course our travels took us to all corners of the globe. From the hip culture of Iceland to the tropical treasures of Barbados we put a spotlight on some of our favorite destinations. One of our favorite times of year is Miami Art Basel when the glitterrati descends on sultry South Beach turning this art fair into a week long glamfest starting at the end of November and we highlighted the best shows and hottest hotels to be part of the action. This season there is plenty to be thankful for and ways to give whether it’s a simple smile, a kind gesture, or selfless act.

MEET OUR CONTRIBUTORS George Wayne is regarded as one of the most astute pop culture journalists to this day. The Jamaican born style scribe, for 22 years, revered columnist to Vanity Fair magazine has interviewed some of the world’s leading personalities from film, fashion, music and celebrity culture for two decades and counting. His cover story interview with Hollywood’s next hart-throb Michael Shannon is his first exclusive for Resident magazine. ‘’My first impression of Michael Shannon is of a man true to his craft and rather shy and un-assuming considering the metier he chooses to ply his immense talent. It was rather endearing.’’ George Wayne’s second book - a ‘’quasi-memoir’’ titled ‘’SIMPLY GEIRGEOUS’’ will be published by HarperCollins in the Summer of 2017.

Daniel D’Ottavio is a commercial photographer based in New York City, and working principally within the intersection of fashion and sport. Daniel’s atypical approach to sports photography resists the lure of automatic focus and high-powered lenses in favor of a “slower” aesthetic, achieving a look that feels at once contemporary and of a different time. His first monograph, RUGBY, was published by Silas Finch in 2010. Daniel D’Ottavio Photography | www.danieldottavio.com | 347.528.2263

His witty humor and unique insight into pop culture, celeb-reality and style makes him one of the most quoted and most recognized fashion brands in the world. He has partnered as an ambassador and creative force with corporations such as Vogue, GM, Gillette, Nivea, Hugo Boss, Bloomingdale’s, Macys, Sears, Hanes, Maybelline and many more, adding style and glamour to these longstanding household names and he is often a guest correspondent for E!, CNN, Access Hollywood, HLN, ABC, and Entertainment Tonight. Behind the lens of our esteemed covers and all of our beautiful fashion and beauty spreads is talented photographer Evan Guttman. For over a decade, Evan has been experimenting with color, lights, shadows, and reflections to capture his client’s essence which was beautifully epitomized in our Blanc & Noir fashion shoot this month. Utilizing the newest Sony a7RII camera, shooting uncompressed RAW at an amazing 42megapixels, tethered to a Microsoft Surface 4 Pro tablet, he is able to show his clients their pictures seconds after it leaves the camera with corrects settings and filters already applied to them. It is advances like these, that makes Evan’s photography ahead of the game, and therefore Resident Magazine is truly honored to work with and showcase his tremendous talents. She calls herself an ‘invisible staff’, and there are two reasons for this. First, because the excellence of a retoucher is to make sure his/her work is not noticeable, hiding the imperfections and emphasizing the strengths of the shot, keeping lights, shadows and human anatomy natural, and holding to the original intent of the photographer as well. Since she was a child, Roza enjoyed drawing and painting, which is akin to the high-end retouching. A classical university education gives an advantage over self-taught enthusiasts when it comes to illustration, composition, color theory, body anatomy and history of art. Roza is confident they are essential for success in any contemporary visual art, whether it is graphical design, interior design or retouching. During her career Roza has worked as a retoucher in the photo lab, graphical designer in one of the best regional event agencies, and even launched a kids fashion e-commerce startup and has worked on numerous beauty campaigns and magazine spreads. rozadinova.com.au

Oscar D. Caballero has been a makeup and beauty expert for over 15 years. He was a senior makeup artist at the Victoria’s Secret flagship store, and was part of the team for the runway show in 2013. He honed his skills alongside celebrity makeup artist Sue Devitt—who’s defined Sarah Jessica Parker’s looks on the red carpet—and Oscar managed Devitt’s beauty line at Barneys. He’s worked with the luxury skincare line Natura Bisse for over ten years (a Beyonce favorite), and as a result learned the rare art of using products to accentuate a woman’s natural beauty—not cover it up. Oscar’s work has been seen on four billboards in Times Square (for Taku Saki), in the Ralph Lauren Midnight Romance ad campaign, and on the faces of Miss Universe Gabriella Isler, Miss Universe Paulina Vega, and several of the Real Housewives. He’s an artist in every sense of the word.

Emily Carcaramo is a NYC based hairstylist with twelve years of experience. Years of training from Bumble and Bumble and John Barrett, Emily quickly developed skills as a cutting expert and is NYC’s go-to stylist. With stars like Lindsay Ellingson, Harley Verea Newtown, Bethenny Frankel, Ramon Singer and Rachel Roy, along with NYFW shows Givenchy, Carmen Marc Valvo, Tommy Hilfiger and Lela Rose, Emily is no stranger to the behind the scenes of NYC’s most stylish. WHITNEY WOERZ Teen Superstar By Haiting Tan

H

ailing from the Big Apple, budding singer songwriter, Whitney Woerz, is on the fast track to superstardom. Recording her debut EP back in January 2015, “Behind the Smile,” was released in November 2015, which documents Woerz’s search for direction as she faces the challenges of being both an artist and a teenager. Viewed approximately 20 million times on all social platforms, her first single, “Loss and Love,”, was met with great reception. Since dropping her album, the 15-year old singer landed a coveted role on NBC’s Today Show where she performed her latest single, “6 Second Love,” on Elvis Duran’s segment “Artist of the Month.” Signing a distribution deal with Sony Music Label’s RED banner in 2015, Woerz is now managed by established producer, Glenn Rosenstein, who has previously cooperated with superstars such as Madonna and U2. In August of 2015, Woerz began recording an album of covers of her favorite songs at the legendary FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The series called “LIVE from Muscle Shoals: The Fame Sessions” was produced and mixed by Rosenstein. “Ghost Story,” directed by Academy Award-nominee, Liz Garbus, was written for an internet friend who was struggling with depression was released this summer. Released in the summer of 2016, it has garnered close to 8 million

views in social within the first two months and is currently sitting pretty on Amazon’s top 100 tracks. The music video attracted more than 1000 teens hoping to participate in the shoot but only 15 were chosen. Tackling the issues of mental health and bullying, Woerz and Garbus’ aim was to create a clip grounded by raw and honest stories. A staunch advocate for teen voices against stigma related to teen depression and suicide, Woerz is a huge supporter of Bring Change 2 Mind, organization chaired by Glenn Close. Aware that her celebrity status can shed light on such a taboo issue, Woerz hopes that her music can transcend art, music and effect social justice. Whitney wrote GHOST STORY for a girl she never met who was going to commit suicide and was inspired by how her call to BC2M had helped to prevent her suicide and saved her life. With over 10 million social views, Whitney has publicly stated her commitment to donating a portion of her music profits to LETS Bring Change 2 Mind. Believing that music is a universal language that could help and maybe heal, Woerz hopes her own musical roots and her life experiences can provide insight into serious social issues. BILLY PROCIDA Real Estate Financier By Haiting Tan

A

s a nationally ranked general contractor, winner of the national home builder award, President of Procida Funding & Advisors, Billy Procida’s endless resumé will impress you. Similar to Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, Billy Procida proved that you don’t need a college degree to be successful in life. Entering the construction business at the age of 18, Procida never looked back. Starting off as a laborer, Procida moved up the ranks to a developer then to an investment banker and finally to a successful owner. Understanding that he was not born with a silver spoon, “I knew I had to keep getting better, climbing up the ladder like an athlete.” Procida grew his first company, The Procida Organization, from $2 million in sales to $70 million in the span of a few short years. The Procida Organization was also named New York City Developer of the Year in addition to being given The Governors Excellence Award and the National Association of Homebuilders’ Pillar of the Industry Award. The firm was also nationally ranked among America’s Top 400 contractors and listed on The Professional Builders 400 List. Over a span of 6 years, Procida financed $1 billion of developments as an investor while he was CEO of William Procida Inc. From 2000 to 2008, Procida founded the Palisades Financial. During his time as a majority shareholder, he formed and managed two private equity funds. When he was 26 years old, Procida chose to take a leave of absence to take on a full-time assignment with the Trump Organization. “I was the chief fireman. Any time there was any trouble, I would have to handle it.” After having the opportunity to first-handedly witness Donald Trump at work, he turned his focus back to his own businesses.

28 | resident.com

Currently President of Procida Funding & Advisors based in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, the CEO admits that in his line of work, having to solve 100 difficult situations daily, is a struggle. He said “Any CEO that tells you anything different is pulling your leg.” Procida Funding is a direct lender that provides bridge, construction, mezzanine and equity financing through its 100 Mile Fund. The company just completed 5 full years in operation this October. In that time, the Fund closed 88 loans totaling in excess of $385,000,000 of which 44 of those loans totaling over $150,000,00 have already been repaid. Most notably over the 5 years the

Fund has paid out an average annual dividend of 14.21% to its investors. Despite his busy schedule, has taken time to share his experience by holding lectures at New York University and Columbia University. Giving 25 lectures a year, Procida considers teaching and bestowing practical real life knowledge as one of his favorite things he can do to give back, who knows maybe a career switch might happen in the future. ICONS & INFLUENCERS

DANIELLE PEARL Indie Author By Haiting Tan

A

lthough Danielle Pearl’s affinity with writing began at a young age, the writer took a detour before landing her dream job. Clueless about her future career, Danielle Pearl majored in international relations and politics at Boston University. Realizing she lacked the passion for college, the writer dropped out and worked for a start up company for a decade. Upon the arrival of her firstborn child, Pearl made the decision to work from home. It was then when she stumbled onto a blog post centering the taboo topic of sexual assault. However, it was the comments that inspired her to pick up a pen to start writing her debut novel, “Normal.” Understanding that while we live in a privileged society where we are educated on issues like domestic violence and relationship abuse, people rush to make judgements regarding sexual assault. It is not uncommon to think to ourselves, I would see these warning signs, I would know what to do. I would tell someone, I would get out.” With the main character, Rory’s story unfolding through flashbacks, the novel tells of her abusive relationship with her high school sweetheart and her struggles to overcome PTSD and to look for new love. With self-publishing starting to gain traction, Pearl took the opportunity to publish her debut novel in 2014. “Normal,” is now part of the Something More series. Although the ibooks and Amazon international best selling author is a self proclaimed book addict, she remains loyal towards indie books. The author also expressed desire to branch out into writing other genres. With an 8-year old and 1-year old, Pearl struggles to find a balance between work and family life. As a working mom, Pearl cautions other moms not to trust what you see on social media because most working moms don’t have everything together. “There is no pressure, you don’t need to be perfect.” Pearl says “I can be in the room next door and still miss my kids. However, it is a business therefore it takes dedication. Enjoying the luxury of working from home, my kids get to see the hard work and dedication I commit to my craft.” Daniellepearl.com

FELIX MALITSKY Financial Advisor By Haiting Tan

R

aised Jewish, Felix Malitsky and his family endured anti-Semitism during his 12 years in Eu-rope. Hopping from country to country until he was 12, the Malitsky family finally immigrated to the US in hopes of finding a better and more stable life. Studying finance, economics and history at University of Connecticut, Malitsky always had a strong

passion for business. “I enjoy the opportunities that it provides people. I love taking some-thing small and turning it bigger, it feels as though I am changing the world.” Joining MetLife as Managing Director of MetLife Premier Client Group in 2010, Malitsky is currently President and Managing Partner of Fortis Lux Financial. A name deriving from the Latin words Strong and

Light, Fortis Lux hopes its company can pro-vide strength and guidance in times of uncertainty. With the backing of one of the country’s strongest and most trusted insurance companies, Fortis Lux Financial assists people in achieving financial goals through saving and investing. Forming a partnership with MassMutual fulfills the needs that wealth owners have in the areas of investments, taxes, philanthropy, estate planning, risk management and advice. As president of the company, Malitsky states that he is responsi-ble for everything. “I am responsible for developing and leading leaders. My staff has to be ca-pable of running the company smoothly even when I’m not there.” With a belief in hiring good people that will do great things for their clients, Malitsky takes a firm stance on employing a diverse group of employees. “I believe that if you hire people who look like you, act like you and think like you, you will not succeed. While sharing an identical vision is crucial, you need a diverse mindset.” While he acknowledges that as a society, we are pro-gressing in terms of our mindset on hiring minorities and women in the work force, there is still a significant inequality when it comes to compensations. Making a conscious effort to give back to society, the company frequently hosts charity drives and community service outings. Due to his family centric upbringing, Malitsky tries to integrate family into the business world by hosting kid-friendly events throughout the year. As a parent to 6-year old twins, Malitsky understands the struggle of juggling a hectic work schedule along with attempting to be there for his kid’s sports games and school activities. The Chauncey F. Lufkin III Foundation is a charitable organization founded in 2006 dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals around the world. The foundation’s focus is on fighting poverty through better education and by finding faster cures for the diseases that affect loved ones. To date the Foundation has lent their support to numerous organizations including The

Michael Chen. The concert’s impressive line-up included performances from music legends and emerging artists including Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Nikki Minaj, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Common, Lil Wayne, Tip, Robin Thicke, Blood Orange, Danielle Bradbery and other top artists. Tidal, the music streaming service owned by Beyonce, Jay Z and other artists secured sponsors to cover the cost of the event so that 100 percent of the evening’s proceeds would be put to good use. The performers at the Tidal X 1015 event generously elected to donate half of the proceeds from ticket sales and merchandise to Robin Hood whilst the other half will be split among other worthy not-for-profit organizations and schools. Chauncey Lufkin, Founder of the Chauncey F. Lufkin III Foundation commented on the event, “The Tidal X Benefit Concert was a perfect opportunity to once again connect our resources with Robin Hood in their efforts to improve education in New York City schools. Hot TV Shows: Westworld & Designated Survivor Until Game of Thrones, Homeland and House of Cards returns to our TV screens watch Westworld on Sundays at 9PM. This is HBO’s mesmerizing, new hit about a futuristic park where visitors live out their cowboy and Indian fantasies with artificial but authentic acting and feeling “people”. Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Ed Harris and Evan Rachel Wood make this show a must see. Wood cautions, “We don’t actually show any violence against women, although it is implied.”…. Kiefer Sutherland’s career is having a renaissance after his entertaining series 24: Live Another Day (you can order this FOX drama on Amazon. com). Sutherland flips the coin in ABC’s new escapist spectacle Designated Survivor and moves into the oval office due to a clever plot twist. Sutherland reminisces, “I remember getting to the very end of the script and realizing I was potentially holding the next ten years of my life in my hands.” His co-star Maggie Q says, “I love shooting guns. Not at people or animals, but I love shooting blanks!” Tune into ABC on Wednesday nights at 10PM. Must See Movies: Birth of a Nation Birth of a Nation is bound to garner several Academy Award nominations in multiple categories for controversial director/actor Nate Parker. Knowing the movie is based on a true story makes it hard to watch because of the violence exhibited on both sides. Parker, who tackles the starring role based on Nate Turner’s life says “Usually, we learn about slavery through the context of endurance or resilience but never though resistance or determination.” Gabrielle Union who shows raw pain and pride as the pivotal female character confided, “There were many outspoken feminist advocates and allies who risked a lot to be a part of this project.” The Girl on the Train & The Accountant Emily Blunt is pitch perfect in the mystery thriller The Girl on the Train. The script is complex and filled with jolting surprises which include statements on alcoholism and the abuse of women. Blunt says of her character “Rachel is toxic, physically and emotionally; an incredibly tortured, self-loathing person. I thought it was thrilling to have a protagonist that’s a blackout drunk.” Justin Theroux, who oozes macho evilness said “I play a lot of creeps, I guess that’s a good thing because it means I’m doing my job well?” Ben Affleck delivers in The Accountant, a slick action flick that slips in a message about autism. Ben said, “The role required a lot of research. I spent time with people who were at various places on the autism spectrum.” This film is a fun ride. Art Miami Adrien Brody will show off his painterly side at Art Miami presented by Benrimon Projects. Brody revealed “I’ve come a long way in a short period of time of just being able to show my work. I’m still relatively young, especially as an artist. I hope to be able to evolve and share new work and ideas. I’m very furiously immersed in this.” benrimonprojects.com At Art Miami over 130 galleries including CONNERSMITH, Galerie Forsblom and Klein Sun Gallery will exhibit over 400 artists from over 20 countries. artmiamifair.com. CONTEXT Art Miami takes place at the same time and will show 100 galleries including Accola Griefen and UNION Gallery. The fairs run from November 29 through December 4th. Contextartmiami.com

Robert Cenendella’s Fin Del Mundo Donald Trump is depicted as an orange colored devil surrounded by a court of vanquished politicians including Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, a green tinged Chris Christie and Rand Paul in a new painting by renowned artist Robert Cenendella. The work tilted Fin Del Mundo (The End of the World), also depicts the Pope being crushed in Trump’s tiny hand, an about to be trampled Uncle Sam and a grotesque woman in a bikini who represents Mother Earth and Trump’s lustful side. The triptych will be in the window of Central Park Fine Arts at 211 West 57th Street through November. The artwork, valued at a quarter of a million dollars, is a political commentary depicting the world as an industrial wasteland, emblazoned with fast food logos and a Liberty Bell inscribed with the names of murdered black men including Trayvon Martin. A film about Cenendella’s life Art Bastard, is the current darling of this year’s festival circuit and is in contention for an Academy Award in the Best Documentary category. rcenedellagallery.com Elvis Presley Lives Priscilla Presley and daughter Lisa Marie want fans to have a piece of Elvis. He tried to stop a fight between a young man and martial arts sensation Paul Mormando, who was filming a too realistic fight scene for his movie Bound by Debt. Mormando’s co-star, Freedom Williams, from C & C Music Factory intervened before the bystander was able to step in and try to stop the bloody brawl. Once producer Anna Mormando pointed out the cameras and showed the film permit he backed off and started taking selfies with the stars. efore delving into the holiday madness seek out an expert like Dr. Dara Liotta, board certified in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Chief Medical Director at City Aesthetics, to get your face and body camera ready. Contour your face with non-invasive treatments like fillers and injectables along with the much buzzed about Kybella treatment which addresses the dreaded double chin. Kybella is a patented synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, naturally produced in the body that aids in the breakdown of dietary fat. It is injected in a grid like pattern under the chin to melt fat cells which are then reabsorbed and eliminated by the body. Most individuals will require several sessions depending on how much fat is present. The most adverse effects occur the first two weeks where the submental area may feel numb and swollen, however, in about two to four weeks, a more sculpted and defined jawline is revealed. Another noninvasive option to perfect your skin is the Forever Young BBL (broad-band light) treatment which targets brown and red spots, acne, and skin discolorations using highly specialized filtered light for a more even complexion. This skin perfecting procedure can be customized to your particular skin concerns, and can even be combined with skin tightening (SkinTyte) in the “Tight and Bright” package, an excellent pairing for a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

Body Contouring with Liposonix

A revolutionary treatment that has been around for several years, yet continues to rival the “latest and greatest” newcomers to the world of non-surgical body contouring is Liposonix by Solta Medical. The perfect solution to counteract and maintain a svelte figure during the holiday season, Liposonix utilizes high-intensity focused ultrasound technology to destroy targeted fat below the skin without harming skin tissues. Dr. Anne Chapas, a leading authority on Liposonix and internationally acclaimed dermatologist, as well as founder of Union Square Dermatology, notes that it was one of the first medical practice in the US to offer the 2nd generation of the device and has treated more patients than any other facility. Dr. Chapas explains, “The main benefit of Liposonix compared to similar treatments is the use of high-intensity focused ultrasound technology to provide a custom contouring solution designed to selectively target and permanently destroy unwanted fat tissue in the areas of the abdomen where each patient is most concerned. It’s also unique in that it requires only one treatment, for one hour with very minimal downtime, in comparison to others available that

Regardless of your selected treatment, rest assured that you will attain impressive results due to Dr. Liotta’s unique perspective on the anatomy and aesthetic of the face, combined with her artistry and attention to detail, allowing her to tailor and suggest the ideal treatment or procedure to balance and perfect you into the best version of yourself. SEASONAL TREATS and Your Teeth

cavities, some of those stickier gummy treats will wreak havoc on dental work. Those who can resist the sweets and go for the healthier options should still be aware when choosing nuts or popcorn - as those notorious kernels can crack a filling or a weak tooth. Make sure to floss well enough to remove the treats that get lodged between the teeth. Bring any damaged fillings or chipped teeth to the immediate attention of your dentist to prevent further damage. We have after hours appointments available at Central Park South Dental and can accommodate patient emergencies – even during holiday time. Aside from limiting these indulgences, regular dental maintenance is the key to a great smile. Brushing 3x a day (yes, it really makes a difference), flossing (we know it’s a pain) and keeping your regularly scheduled appointments with the dentist and hygienist will keep your dental health on the right track. We can help you maintain your glowing smile throughout the torrent of seasonal indulgences and keep your teeth bright and healthy for all those happy family gathering and holiday parties.

y now you might have had more than enough pumpkin spice lattes to keep you satisfied until next fall, but as the temperatures drop the seasonal treats have only just begun. There are a few things to keep in mind for optimum dental health as you indulge this time of year. Whether it’s the lattes, the new vintage Bordeaux you’ve discovered or the trendiest chai tea on the menu, many of our favorite indulgences can stain teeth. Additionally, the PSL and any other drink made with sugary syrup can remain on your teeth and contribute to cavities. Try switching up to a sugar-free version if available, or simply add cinnamon and nutmeg to enjoy the flavors of the season and skip the syrup all together. Find a fantastic fullbodied Chardonnay to pair with the heartier meals this time of year and enjoy the red wines, coffee and tea in moderation. Of course, be sure to keep those pearly whites in check by brushing well with a whitening toothpaste and being vigilant and keeping regular dental appointments - no matter how busy the ongoing holidays and obligations

9 million dollar Royal Blue Diamond Ring from M.S. Rau

Scott Diament of Palm Beach Show Group

How to Start a Collection Bill Rau, a third generation antiques dealer and owner of M.S Rau Antiques in New Orleans, showcased a rare first edition Wedgewood Portland Vase for $50,000, a 10.06 carat ring named The Royal Blue priced at $9.6 million. “I have theory that I believe to be true; there are the rules for all collectibles,” explained Rau. “If you love 19th Century paintings or are an expert in that and you want to learn about paintings by the Old Masters, I think what you have to learn is only about 15%, because 85% of those rules are the same.” Rau explains of how he became knowledgeable in so many niche collectibles categories. “If you’re an expert in painting, and you want to learn about jewelry, that might be the biggest difference, that might be 30% different, but the majority of the guidelines are going to be the same,” he says. Those general rules: Is the piece in good condition? Is it rare? Is it unique? Does it come with papers? Does the origin matter? Is it signed? Those rules are going to be the same whether you’re talking about jewelry or paintings, and then, obviously, you have to learn the 30% different rules,” Rau says. “I was blessed, obviously, because I grew up in the business, so I learned a number of things very early.” rauantiques.com

MICHAEL SHANNON The Man Behind the Enigma

By George Wayne

M

ichael Shannon defines everything Sir Winston Churchill famously quipped - ‘’a riddle wrapped in an enigma.” As such, it was my task here to un-wrap this riddle this notoriously shy, reserved, and rather diffident individual. The passion he portrays on the screen also extends into his personal life as well as a fiercely loyal friend who lends his support for causes close to his heart. Playing the role of Donny in Machine Gun Preacher left an indelible mark on Michael as he has come out to support Sam Childers’ Angels of East Africa charity which continues the work depicted in the biopic. Shannon has played many intense break out roles that should have led to Hollywood superstardom many years ago. After all, he has been in demand for some of the most astute and respected movie directors for decades and counting. One need not mention the fact that he has already been Oscar acclaimed with a nomination eight years ago for his searing role in Revolutionary Road. Despite that all -- this clearly atypical zodiac Leo, bred in Kentucky, and steeped in the stage and blue-chip Hollywood roles - will now have to deal with the fact that he can no longer fly below our radar. His undeniable range and talent is tantamount. Director Tom Ford has astutely grasped that fact and as such his role in that directors much anticipated Nocturnal Animals is but one of the many films that Michael Shannon will be upfront and personal, and as Rihanna would say be ‘’shining like a diamond’’ - in the next coming months. As such GW was more than ready, willing and able to decipher, to de-code to get to the man behind the man that is Michael Corbett Shannon.... GEORGE WAYNE - Have you ever eaten Beef Wellington? MICHAEL SHANNON - Beef Wellington? That’s funny. You’re a funny dude. GW - So they tell me. What does your typical diet consist of? Are you one of those vegan,gluten-free,fastidious types? What does a typical meal for lunch or

dinner consist of? MS - I love so many different cuisines it is hard to narrow it down. I love Italian and I love sushi. But at the end of the day I love a good steak and I also love dessert. GW - Did it ever occur to you when you took on this role in director Tom Ford’s newest film Nocturnal Animals that his last leading man ended up being nominated for an Oscar? MS - Wow! Well I knew that Tom’s first movie had been very successful and critically acclaimed and Colin Firth is a great actor but I wasn’t thinking sure this would happen if I took this role. I just really liked the story and the character. GW - What is at the core of your decision when you decide to take a role? Of course, the typical answer would be the scri pt. But besides the scri pt - what else is there that grabs you and makes you want to take on a role? MS - Usually it is also the people involved. I decided to do Nocturnal Animals after I sat down and talked to Tom about it and the wave of his enthusiasm I was able to ride on that. With this particular character ‘Bobby’ he is a lieutenant on a police department in Texas and he is trying to solve a very gruesome crime perpetrated against the character played by Jake Gyllenhaal and a very devastating event that happened to his family. GW - And what was the greatest takeaway from that experience working with Tom Ford? What is that one gem of anecdote that you will always remember? That one thing you can always tell your grandchildren?

MS - Well, I don’t think it is any secret that Tom Ford is a stickler for detail. He cut my hair for the movie and in fact he decided how my hair should be cut. He came into my trailer where the hairdresser was cutting my hair and he did ask very politely before he did it. But he took the hair clipper and said to her you are doing a wonderful job but I just know exactly how I want this to be done. He was very sweet about it, but I have never had a director ever cut my hair before. GW - Your career, much to your credit is steeped with blue chip stage credentials. From the stages of the renowned Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago to OffBroadway and even the West End in London. Would you consider that training an undeniable attribute? MS -You know it’s kind of mysterious. There are some people that are great film actors that have never been on a stage in their life. By that I mean, there are not dependent on one or the other. The more I work the stronger I get, whether that be on stage or on a film set. I can’t really put my finger on it. GW - Is the stage still your first preference? MS - Oh yes. I love doing theater. I cannot imagine not being able to do theater. Some people think that is probably easier to just do movies. Obviously you make more money but I have been doing theater for 25 years and it is what I love to do. GW- What would you consider your Achilles heel? MS - My Achilles heel? I guess my attitude at times sometimes gets the better of me. GW - Would it be fair to say that you were an angry young man as kid in growing up in Kentucky?

MS - Well, I am a very sensitive person. I have always been very sensitive and when one is sensitive one reacts to things very strongly. Well, that is the way I like to look at it. GW - And you are born a Leo. And the typical Leo man is not the shy, sensitive type you seem to be. Leo men love the limelight and are very outgoing -- they love to preen and do not at all mind being the center of attention. You,Michael Shannon are nothing like the typical Leo lion! MS - Somebody told me something interesting about astrology once. They said you have the sun sign or something of that sort. So even though I am a Leo there are so many other ascendant signs and I guess all that can attribute to the differences in personalities I guess. But I guess I am fundamentally somewhat ferocious. GW - Ferocious? As in a short fuse? Whatever that may be,it has to somehow have helped nourish this actor’s technique? Yes or no? MS - Acting for me is an obsession. When I decide to play a character it kind of becomes a part of me. The character becomes very much a part of my train of thought. It is not a linear thing that I have to do this, this or this to be ready. I actually never really ever feel I am ready to take on a character. And so a lot of it is in the moment. The spontaneous is also important and I just left the sub-conscious take over. GW - Which I am sure had to be the grain of thought you absorbed when you took on the role of playing Elvis Presley in Elvis & Nixon in 2016. What was that like? MS - I loved playing Elvis! And I did prepare for that pretty fastidiously. Honestly, I didn’t have a lot of time because I was working on another film leading up to that but I watched a lot of footage and listened to a lot of Elvis stuff and I really took it seriously. I was nervous at the beginning but once I got comfortable with it, I realized his was a truly fascinating psychology to explore. That was the most interesting thing about it - the psychology of Elvis. Most people focus on the external elements of Elvis without really trying to understand his psychological make-up. Elvis was a really complex dude.

GW - Has anyone ever told you that you evoke a very similar ephemera to the brilliant Willem Dafoe? MS - I hear that every now and again, not on a daily basis, but every now and then. I did do a film with Willem and director Werner Herzog called My Son My Son What Have You Done? I am huge fan of Willem Dafoe I think he is a phenomenal actor. GW - GW would love nothing more than to one day go to the cinema and sit for a movie starring Michael Shannon,Willem Dafoe and Christopher Walken. MS - It’s funny you say that because I have also worked with Christopher Walken. GW - You have worked with the best of the best of the best Michael Shannon.

From Leo (DiCaprio),to Jake (Gylenhall) to Amy (Adams) to (James) Franco, and of course Kate Winslet with whom you starred in Revolutionary Road and a role which garnered you your first Oscar nomination. Who is that one actor you have not worked with yet that you cannot wait to spar against? MS - That’s a tough question, as you said I have been lucky to work with a few great folks. I guess I would say Benedict Cumberbatch. He is a great actor no? I don’t really look at it as combat but he is kind of all the rage and so that will be very interesting. GW - The coming 2017 will be the year of Michael Shannon. That is the gospel according to George Wayne. And it’s been such a pleasure to meet you.

From Shotgunner to Savior

SAM CHILDERS The Real Machine Gun Preacher By Hillary Latos

B

y most accounts Sam Childers life reads as a Hollywood biopic filled with dramatic twists and turns, with an unexpected outcome. Naturally, his life was made into a Hollywood film, The Machine Gun Preacher with Gerard Butler playing the lead and Michael Shannon playing his best friend Donny. Though it was not considered a Hollywood success, the movie continues to air with his compelling story told to new audiences in the US and abroad, and most importantly his work saving orphans from war torn countries in Africa continues through his organization Angels of East Africa. Here Resident speaks to Sam Childers on his inspirational lifelong transformative journey from self destruction to self actualization and savior.

drugs, by 14 snorting cocaine. When I was 15 years old I left home and started to shoot up heroin and cocaine and had a drug addiction. By the time I was 18 I was selling drugs by the trunk load full. When I was in my 20s I became a shotgunner- a hired gun for drug dealers. I went as far off as you can go into that world. My turning point came when I was living in Orlando and involved in a bar fight which turned out to be a shootout and I almost got killed. That night I made up my mind I’m done living this life. My wife & I moved back to Pennsylvania and she started going to church with my mom. Two years later I decided to give my life to Christ, and my life changed. My business started doing well, I was a contractor and at one time owned 17 houses.

So tell me a bit about your life experiences and what had inspired you to change? I was raised in a perfect Christian family with a great mom and dad. When I was a child I wanted to be a preacher, but at 11 years old I started doing drugs and smoking marijuana, by 12 I was experimenting with alcohol, by 13 experimenting with prescription

After accepting Christ, I went on a mission trip to Africa and I believe that God has a way of putting in front of us what he calls us to do. We are all called but few are chosen, there are only a few willing to go all the way. God put opportunities in front of me and I had to choose one and do something with it. While in Africa I came across a small child

who had stepped on a landmine and from the waist down there was nothing there. I stood over the body and told God I will do whatever it takes to help these people. At the time I didn’t realize what I was saying but 21 years later I’m still doing that. What are you currently working on? I have been a biker my whole life and I have a custom motorcycle shop which is our office for Angels of East Africa and I’m starring in a TV show coming out on A & E about the biker life. I’ve always been very good at business though I never got an education. I’ve made millions of dollars over my life and haven’t kept any of it, I don’t even have a savings account. Everything I do goes back to what I do in East Africa and its rescuing children. I spend it all feeding people, rescuing children, and running orphanages. I have seven orphanages now and serve 7,000 meals per day. There are so many things we don’t experience at in the US, which is that nobody goes hungry in the US. In East Africa the children I look after,

we are their only hope they don’t have any other resources. We are big in teaching a trade, skills and education over there. The name Machine Gun Preacher was really just a brand to grab attention. We just did a rescue last week, and one little boy was saying we were wondering if the Reverend was coming and the children still talk about me. God sent me there to change a nation, to educate them and teach them a skill and a trade and we create businesses for people that come through our orphanages. I am also throwing the Angels of East Africa charity event where the proceeds will go towards completing our seventh orphanage in Ethiopia. Tell me about your friendshi p with Michael Shannon. I met a lot of people in Hollywood and Michael Shannon is one that is really real. I met him in 2011 and he gave me his number and said call me anytime and I’ve only texted him 5 times since. Every time he got back to me within 12 hours, and he’s kept his word. He’s an amazing actor and a true family man.

Why do your peers consider you the controversial Christian? Starting from the days of Jesus Christ, anyone who was willing to help others has received criticism. They crucified Jesus Christ because he was so controversial. Mother Teresa was once blackballed from her own church. I believe anyone who is trash talked is doing something. When they don’t quit what they are doing it really means they are doing something. A lot of people thought I should give up Africa after the movie came out because success came, money came. But I decided to stay, I made a lot of sacrifices and my wife left me. I think I’ve proven to the world that I’m serious and grew from one orphanage to seven. In November 2012 I won the Mother Teresa award which is the highest award in the world for social justice, and I’m the only American to ever win this. I’m not finished, I’m 54 years old and I want to do a lot more. I don’t believe I’m a religious person, I base a lot of my teachings on Matthew 25. Jesus called it ‘The Final Judgement’ and what we will be judged on. It means giving clothes to someone who is naked,

giving water to someone parched. The final judgement is about helping someone else who is in need. We all are going to leave this world. When it’s your last day on earth what are people going to say about you- are you known for self wants, of self benefits. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor you can always save a life and I’ve proved this with my life as I was the most unlikely to succeed. I was a bad guy and if I can change and save lives everyone can do it. It all begins with one life. If I can do it think about what you can do. Machinegunpreacher.org

On November 4, Sam Childers will be hosting the Angels of East Africa Charity Ball in NYC at City Winery with a special musical performance by Michael Shannon and his band where proceeds will go directly to fund the Angels of East Africa mission. SALES LAUNCH AT AVORA At Port Imperial By George Cahn

W

ith demand for new high-end condominiums with proximity to Manhattan on the rise, Landsea has launched sales for Avora, an 11-story, amenity-rich building on Weehawken, NJ’s Hudson River waterfront with unparalleled views of the midtown Manhattan skyline. Ideally located just steps from the Port Imperial Ferry Terminal -- which provides an ultra-convenient 8-minute commute into New York City – Avora features 184 premium one-, two- and three-bedroom

condominium homes, as well as a limited offering of duplex Penthouses. Homes are pre-construction priced from the $800,000’s to more than $4 million, with initial occupancy anticipated for first quarter, 2018. “The appeal of the New Jersey Gold Coast continues to grow, particularly in Weehawken as buyers are drawn to its quality of life in terms of a waterfront setting, commuter convenience, urban/suburban attributes and significant value,” said Gabe Pasquale,

Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Landsea, which is developing Avora. “With Manhattan prices continuing to escalate, the Hudson Yards poised to transform the West Side into a major economic hub, strong international recognition of the area, and an over-inflated rental market, Avora will tap into the considerable interest of an underserved segment of the marketplace.” Avora’s modern design was created by worldrenowned architects IBI Group which conceived a multi-tiered, stepped-back design to maximize the building’s waterfront location and spectacular views of midtown Manhattan and the Hudson River. Interiors feature thoughtful layouts and modern design throughout the public spaces and residences. A collection of one-, two- and three-bedroom homes – as well as a limited offering of duplex Penthouses – were designed with a contemporary aesthetic of sleek lines and modern style. Dramatic finishes and appointments include nine-foot ceiling heights, Chef’s kitchens with stainless steel appliances, and designer spa bathrooms with porcelain countertops, European-imported stone finishes and limestone

Avora will also feature a secure parking garage, bicycle storage, resident storage and 6,000 square feet of street-level retail space.

baths. Many residences offer balconies and terraces with majestic, unimpeded New York City views. Residents will have access to a full suite of lifestyle amenities at Avora, including a magnificent lobby with Concierge, private screening theater, business center, elegant boardroom, a grand salon lounge with a bar and catering kitchen, on-site pet grooming, and a state-of-the-art strength and cardio fitness center. A third-floor landscaped outdoor plaza features a pool, spacious sun deck, lounges, grilling areas and fire pits – all set against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline.

Located in the heart of the $2 billion master-planned Port Imperial community that stretches two miles of Hudson River waterfront across three municipalities, Avora is ideally situated for commuters. The building is within walking distance of the Port Imperial Ferry Terminal, which offers ferry service to both midtown and downtown Manhattan. Hudson-Bergen Light Rail service to neighboring Hoboken, Jersey City, the PATH system and NJTRANSIT’s Hoboken Terminal is also available nearby. Port Imperial also features a waterfront walkway system and numerous parks just outside residents’ front door, and the nearby Shops at Riverwalk offers a dynamic and animated riverfront destination with numerous dining and shopping options. Landsea is the first new development firm since 2008 to introduce a new residential offering to Port Imperial, which comprises residential, retail and hospitality. BLENDING SCIENCE AND STYLE FOR BETTER SIGHT WITH MICROSUN LAMPS Microsun is helping people see again. Sit down with Jennifer Deaton, head of the company’s Customer Service team, and she will share customer emails and letters – some of them several pages long – about how buying a Microsun lamp transformed people’s lives. “This product is a godsend,” wrote one man from South Bend, Indiana. Another, from Brooklyn, New York, says he bought a lamp for every room in his apartment. Why do these lamps inspire so much passion? Microsun in the only company that offers consumers a commercial-grade lighting technology that mimics real sunlight. At the heart of every Microsun lamp is the patented Microsun light source, a Halide-LED module that generates more light than six 75-watt incandescent bulbs. In 2012, new ownership stepped in at Microsun and revamped the company. Microsun CEO Bob Conner set out to reinvigorate the brand, modernizing manufacturing and fulfillment facilities, adding a robust e-commerce website, and introducing fresh new lamp designs We recently sat down with the team behind Microsun’s success to learn more about their unique lamps: Resident Magazine: What makes Microsun Lamps different from ordinary lamps? Microsun: All of our custom lamps use a proprietary, patented lighting system that pairs a powerful HID light with two LED bulbs to deliver 7,000 lumens of full spectrum light. That makes our lamps over six times brighter than a typical lamp. You simply can’t find lamps like ours anywhere else. RM: How does brighter light result in better vision? MS: Most people experience difficulty with vision after age 40. It’s harder to focus. The text seems dimmer. We need at least three times more light to see as effectively as we did when we were teenagers, which means that turning on one of our lamps enables many people to experience the full sensation of sight for the first time in decades. RM: Your lamp also emits a full spectrum of light, one that has the same pleasing feel as sunlight. How is that beneficial? MS: As we age, colors may not appear as vibrant. That’s due to the yellowing of the eye’s crystalline lens, which also reduces the intensity of blue and blue-green colors. That’s why we engineered our lamps to produce more light in the blue and blue-green part of the spectrum. By enhancing one’s perception of cooler colors, it can correct natural changes in vision. RM: Do we have to sacrifice style when investing in more powerful lamps? MS: Not at all. Our collection of floor and table lamps offers both substance and style. We have many unique pieces, including lamps in solid brass, hand-finished antique brass, porcelain, bronze, and even Amish-crafted hardwood lamps. You can mix and match bases and shades into thousands of combinations, one of which is sure to suit your personal style. To learn more about Microsun Lamps, or to place an order, visit microsunlamps.com or call 888.328.8701.

ITALIAN GEM IN L.I.C.

By Haiting Tan

T

hough Brooklyn has come into its own as a hotbed for emerging new chefs, Long Island City is quickly becoming the next destination in New York City’s gastronomic scene. One of the forerunners of this culinary movement in this ethnically diverse borough is Il Falco- a long time neighborhood favorite. Just like the diversity of the neighborhood, Chef Segundo Tinishanay and sous chef Bolivar Perez emigrated to NYC in search of the American dream and someday opening up their own restaurant. With previous stints at one of the city’s most revered Italian restaurants, Il Mulino, their talents shine through at this wildly popular and charming neighborhood spot that serves a combination of Northern and Southern Italian cuisine, that’s as authentic as the mother country. Immigrating from Ecuador at the age of 17, Chef Tinishanay has spent the last 30 years working at Il Mulino where he has risen through the ranks to be a chef. When the restaurant opened chains in Miami and Las Vegas, he was responsible for training the staff. Perez worked side by side with Tinishanay for the past two decades. He started as a line cook and worked his way up to become a chef. His list of illustrious customers includes former president Bill Clinton as well as President Barack Obama. Replicating the same flavors as their predecessor they have created classic Italian dishes such as a wild porcini mushroom ravioli doused with a rich cream sauce tousled with champagne and black truffles. Other specialties on the restaurant includes a Branzino cooked in sea salt. For those with a hearty appetite, they offer a variety of meat dishes that you can choose from. The Manzo Al Barolo, a filet of beef sautéed with Barolo red wine, shallots, sage; served with spin-

ach or the rack of lamb is certain to satisfy your palate. Pasta lovers will be delighted to discover that the pasta is all homemade with delectable and delicate sauce to tantalize the palate. After a long day at work, Il Falco is an ideal location to unwind while sipping on a cocktail with colleagues at the striking bar. The restaurant has a prix fixe menu with a three course lunch for an amazingly affordable price of $18.50. With fantastic hospitality, delectable food, and a heavenly tiramisu, this hidden gem stashed away from the hustle and bustle of New York City is certainly worth the subway ride only one stop away from Manhattan. Free valet parking is also provided. Ilfalcolic.com

DINING OUT

By Haiting Tan

As the holidays are approaching, there are plenty of reasons to explore the city to celebrate its dynamic culinary scene. Fall’s bounty is reflected in the seasonally changing menus as we explored the city to check out new hotspots from the Meatpacking and East Village to Midtown and the Upper West Side as we tasted a variety of international cuisines that tantalize the palette.

SCARPETTA 355 West 14 St, NYC 212.691.0555 Scarpettarestaurants.com Deriving from the Italian expression, “fare la scarpetta,” which describes a gesture of soaking up the remaining sauce left in the pot with a piece of bread, this Meatpacking hotspot has since expanded to other cities like Vegas, Miami, and Philadelphia. As the name was inspired by the indulgent gesture of savoring every last bite of the meal, that can be said of their signature spaghetti dish coated with a crave worthy buttery tomato sauce. Other new fall additions to the menu include the Ricotta Capellacci pasta with honshemjii mushrooms and black truffle, halibut with lardo, cauliflower, Romanesco and smoked potato as well as their fanous short rib and bone marrow agnolotti. The loin of lamb paired with fava bean and mint is roasted to perfection reflecting the restaurant’s philosophy of creating bold flavors to tantalize the palette. One of the best ways to explore the chef’s masterpieces is through their multi course tasting menu. Nominated for a James Beard “Best New Restaurant in America,” award as well as receiving a coveted three-star review from the New York Times, LDV Hospitality’s signature restaurant is chic, welcoming and most importantly serves mouthwatering dishes

MEGU 355 West 16 St, NYC 212.885.9400 Meguworldwide.com The culinary scene in the already sizzling Meatpacking district just got hotter with the highly anticipated opening of Megu New York at the Dream Downtown. Establishing its name as the premier haute Japanese destination in Tribeca, seasoned restauranteur Jon Bakhshi has reimagined a new Megu in a splashy 5,000 square-foot venue filled with customary Japanese interior accents, complimented with an futuristic 3-D mapping cinematic ambiance. Notable dishes include King Crab Pineapple Roll with Avocado Truffle, Tobiko, and Shiso; Wagyu Beef and Foie Gras Croquettes with Truffle Aioli and Micro Wasabi; and Branzino Kabocha Risotto with kombu, tamarind wakame broth and basil oil. Crispy Tuna Tartare, Nori Taco Shells, and Edamame lollipop – all made in house – serve as additional highlights. A selection of vegan and vegetarian options are also available like the Okinawa Sweet Potato Ravioli with Kombu Foam, and the Agedashi Tofu with Mushroom Dashi Broth, among others. Executive Chef Frances Tariga Weshnak combines classic Japanese fare along with a dash of avant garde dishes to create a global dining experience. – Hillary Latos

HAO NOODLE AND TEA BY MADAME ZHU’S KITCHEN 401 Sixth Ave, NYC 212.633.8900 Hailing from Chongqing, Zhu Rong, has taken her popular chain from China to Greenwich Village bringing traditional i.e. non Americanized Chinese dishes to the mainstream. Flanked by two chefs who excel at manipulating bubbling oil, steaming hot woks, and molding dough, Zhu opened Hao Noodle and Tea by Madam Zhu’s Kitchen. Inspired by traditional Chinese dishes, the menu includes classics regional dishes from different areas of China with a penchant towards the spicy and flavorful Sichuan region. A highlight is the fiery Sichuan Chicken laced with tongue numbing Sichuan peppercorns, sweet smoked sole, crispy shrimp sauté, and spicy Madam Zhu’s spicy fish stew. The highlight of the menu is certainly its hand-pulled noodles. Whether its the Taiwanese pork noodles or the flat noodles served with pork meatball, guests will be left with a satisfied appetite. Rounding out the menu is the warm soothing tea. Guests can choose from a delicate silver needle and white peony, herbal tea, oolong, among others. AVRA MADISON 14 east 60 St, NYC 212.937.0100 avrany.com Building upon its success in midtown, The Tao Group has opened a second outpost of Avra Estiatorio Madison in a sprawling and airy bi level 7,000 square foot space on 60th street between Fifth and Madison that was previously incarnated as Rouge Tomate and Copacabana. Known for resonating with Manhattan’s elite that represents a cross section of the beautiful people hailing from uptown and downtown, Avra Madison is the latest UES hotspot where the food is as good as the people watching. Offering traditional Greek cuisine with an emphasis on fresh seafood, the restaurant was designed by David Rockwell and inspired by the carefree spirit of the Greek islands with a light and breezy setting with marble from Greece, lemon trees and a white salt wall sculpture. While Avra excels with classic Greek appetizers such as hummus and grilled octopus, their specialty is their extensive fresh seafood selection ranging from juicy oysters and fresh sashimi, to grilled black sea bass and imported Mediterranean fish. Evoking a very California feel, the airy space features reclaimed oak tables and floors, exposed brick walls, warm ambient lighting, and floor to ceiling windows opening onto Sixth Avenue. A signature dish that resonates with Waxman’s loyal following is his roasted chicken with crispy baked skin on the outside and juicy flavorful meat on the inside. As everything is sourced locally, the menu changes by the season. To reap Fall’s bounties, his new fall additions include a delicious gnocchi dressed with roasted cauliflower, pork sausage, and parmesan, as well as charcoal roasted Brussels sprouts with romesco and sheep’s milk cheese as well as their divine tuna poke laced with vibrant flavors. Pair your meal with their bespoke cocktails using fresh juices and seasonal herbs. A favorite is the spicy My Sharona made with Cazadores Reposado, grapefruit, agave, opal basil, and chili oil, as well as a new spiced apple cider laced with aged bourbon. – Hillary Latos

TRATTORIA MACHIAVELLI 519 Columbus Ave, NYC 212.724.2658 For over 20 years, Nathalie De La Fontaine has been serving New Yorkers top notch Italian cuisine. Five years ago, De La Fontaine had the vision of transporting New Yorkers from the bustling streets of the city to the serenity and tranquility of Florence. Turning vision into reality, De La Fontaine commissioned the work of talented artisans, sculptors, and ceramicists for the art and decor of Machiavelli. Paying homage to traditional Northern Italian cuisine, Machiavelli has a rotating menu featuring daily specials from various Italian regions. The star of the menu is the show stopping handmade pasta dishes such as Gnocchi Tricolore, made with pillowy gnocchi in spinach, potato and beet renditions, tossed in a golden heirloom tomato sauce that is equal parts zesty and flavorful and the Farfalle Nere al Salmone features farfalle pasta, creatively dyed with squid ink for an eye-catching appearance, tossed with tender Canadian salmon in a creamy pink sauce. Italian dinner is never complete without wine. The all-Italian wine list is also one of De La Fontaine’s handpicked creations, carefully curated to offer top-ranking wine selections by the glass and bottle. The soothing ambience is only enhanced by the resplendent entertainment experience that features up and coming musicians from Juilliard and Lincoln Center performing live music.

THE OTHER GREAT ITALIAN TRILOGY Dining at Il Gattopardo,The Leopard at des Artistes & Mozzarella & Vino By Elizabeth Darwen

T

he Godfather movies are considered by many to be the greatest Italian trilogy of all time. However, over the past few years, there is only one Italian trilogy that stands above the rest in New York City’s dining scene; Il Gattopardo, The Leopard at des Artistes, and Mozzarella & Vino. These three restaurants set the standard in fine Italian dining, with the only debate being whose everyone’s favorite of the three is. For certain, all three are sure to satiate your appetite with their delectable dishes – especially this Thanksgiving holiday.

ST. BARTH’S Jetset Guide to the Carribean South of France Experience By Norah Bradford

T

he island of Saint Barthelemy or “St. Barths” as it is near-universally is the jewel in the French Caribbean crown. When the islands were first colonized St. Barths was not seen as a winner – islands such as Trinidad, Barbados and Antigua were key for commerce and sugar and spice production. However, as the economies of the islands migrated towards an emphasis on tourism, given the idyllic environment St. Barths has carved out a niche as a social epicenter and the North American outpost for fans of the South of France culture. Every New Year’s Eve it is reckoned some 40% of the world’s Super Yachts congregate to witness the fireworks and party ahead of the New Year’s Day race known as the St. Barths Bucket. Between November and April here is a short guide as to where to eat, sleep and play; Cheval Blanc St. Barth Isle de France

Cheval Blanc St-Barth Isle de France One of the biggest changes on the island in recent years is the change in ownership of the Hotel Isle de France by LVMH who have reopened the property as its third hotel alongside its sisters in Courcheval, France and the Maldives. Now renamed the Cheval Blanc the property is even more luxurious in nature. Try the Lobster Fricasse Flambe at al-fresco restaurant La Case de L’Isle. Eden Rock

Eden Rock Eden Rock was the first hotel to be built on the island of St. Barth. Constructed in 1950, famous Caribbean aviator and adventurer, Remy de Haenen used the hotel as a destination for his well-known friends such as the Rockefellers, Howard Hughes and Greta Garbo. After a few decades of gentle neglect, Eden Rock was acquired by David and Jane Matthews in 1995. Eden Rock possesses some of the most extravagant villas on the island. From the Rockstar villa that has a recording studio as well as two separate cabins. The villa has often been described as “a hundred million dollar yacht on land” at an enormous 16,000-square-feet. Other villas include the Nina with its own private art gallery and the two floored Orchid beach house with a rooftop terrace providing one of a kind view of the bay. All villas are private and include their own pool or spa pool, kitchen and plenty of space for relaxation. Guests who may not need room to house twelve people can choose from one of the hotel’s eight different suites. At Eden Rock, luxury is provided in all shapes and sizes.

DESTINATION:

ICELAND

As a country of sharp contrasts where fire and ice coexist, dark winters are offset by eternal sunshine, and luminescent light shows- Iceland is one of the most fascinating countries on the planet. With a burgeoning and vibrant cultural scene beset against an otherworldly landscape Iceland offers a unique adventure and experience that’s only 5 hours away from the Northeast.

THE BLUE LAGOON By Haiting Tan

A

s the Empire State is to New York, the Blue Lagoon has become Iceland’s must visit attraction. Surrounded by a panoramic view of lava fields, the man-made lagoon’s water is fed from the Svartsengi geothermal plant. While the water is actually milky white, the blue comes from the silica and the way it reflects sunlight. During warmer days, algae starts to grow, providing the wa-ter with a hint of green. While an otherworldly view sufficient in attracting millions of visitors from across the world, the Blue Lagoon has a bonus factor. Water from the lagoon has long been known to have the ability to cure skin diseases and to condition and exfoliate the skin. After taking a dip in the warm waters, guests can check out the spa amenities. If it has been a lifelong dream of yours to try out a silica mud mask, the silica bar is the place for you. Leave the mask on for at least five minutes, and you’re guaranteed to leave the spa with skin as soft as a baby. Carved into the lava rock, guests can let off some steam in the sauna rooms while reflecting on the one of a kind landscape around the lagoon. The man-made waterfall can soothe sore shoulders and stiff muscles but guests are warned of the waiting times on busier days. But if you’re looking for a softer touch, guests can try out the in-water massage where you will be floating on the relaxing warm water while enjoying a

95 | resident.com

rejuvenat-ing massage. If you’re simply taking a break from the water, the spa has a relaxation area where guests can enjoy calming music while admiring the view of the lagoon. Calling in a day, guests can shower at the lagoon’s private shower cubicles. Complimentary Blue Lagoon shower gel and hair conditioner are offered in the shower area. It is advisable to use hair conditioner because the geothermal water can make the hair dry. For guests of the exclusive lounge, the shower and changing rooms can accommodate up to two people. The lounge has to be booked prior to your stay at Blue Lagoon as it can only accommodate up to 12 guests. Prices range from €195 to €395 depending on the number of your party. A general admission includes a three hour stay and a complimentary skin care package. Guests are encouraged to step out to the deck for another take on the beautiful landscape. For geology geeks, the Blue Lagoon is your ideal destination as it provides 40-minute-long tours of the lagoon with tie bits and fun facts about the volcanic eruption and the formation of the la-goon. Priced at €15 per person, the tour includes a snack from the Lava Restaurant, a cocktail from the bar and a science lesson in the lagoon’s very own lab. Led by head chef Ingi Þórarinn Friðriksson, the Lava Restaurant is built into a stunning lava cliff

that overlooks the lagoon. Prices start at ISK 6200 for its two course dinners and go up to ISK 9900 if patrons are hoping to feast their palette on dishes from the four course tasting menu. If you can’t get enough of the lagoon, Silica Hotel is minutes away from the Blue Lagoon. The hotel offers it own private bathing lagoon in the heart of the stunning lava landscape. But Blue Lagoon is in the midst of building their own luxury hotel which is set to complete in 2017. The spa area will connect the lagoon to the hotel. Cooperating with Blue Lagoon for almost two decades, the 60-room accommodation is designed by Sigridur Sigthorsdottir of Basalt Architects. The lagoon offers hourly bus transfers to and from Blue Lagoon, Reykjavík, and Keflavík Inter-national Airport and free parking for those who are driving so there’s no need to panic over transportation. The lagoon has the words relaxing, calming, unique written all over it. So if you’re looking for an adventure without the hiking boots and perspirations, Blue Lagoon is calling your name. bluelagoon.com

HOTEL HUSAFELL By Michael Travin

T

he appeal of Iceland is undeniable. From its unique rugged terrain, majestic glaciers and beautiful volcanoes to the legendary Blue Lagoon, it’s no wonder this destination has become one of the most popular “bucket list” spots for many Americans. The Hotel Husafell, an eco-luxury hotel opened in July of 2015 located in west Iceland just 90 minutes from the capital city of Reykjavik, sits adjacent to a glacier and serves as the perfect base camp for those looking to experience glaciers, lava caves, hiking trails, horse riding, and much more. Owned and operated by the same local family for seven generations that also runs many other attractions in the area such as the thermal pools and campgrounds, this hotel is modern, sustainable, and family friendly. The area of Husafell itself has attracted Icelandic families for years, many keeping summer homes in this region. It’s also a popular stopover for travelers heading between north and south Iceland, and has been so for many centuries. The four-star Hotel Husafell defines sustainable

design, contemporary style, and local artistry at its finest and the hotels is not only built in harmony with nature but is totally self-sustainable using 100% renewable energy produced from a small hydro-power plant and geothermal heated water from the nearby mountains. Only environmentally friendly materials are used including larch wood and gray slate along the building’s façade.

The interior design embraces rich textures and neutral tones and incorporates local culture with artistic elements throughout the property. Accommodations are located directly on the edge of wilderness with trails just outside the hotel, allowing easy access for their guests. The hotel’s 36 guestrooms have floor to ceiling windows and heated floors along with paintings by local

(Husafell is one of the best places in the world to see them). The Nordic inspired menu owes its flavor and richness to the mouth-wateringly fresh ingredients of locally caught seafood, game and high quality produce grown in nearby geothermal greenhouses. For dinner, the menu is extensive with starters offering fresh ceviche, fish soup, and smoked goose breast among others. For main dishes there are a variety of options from which to choose including lamb, salmon and beef tenderloin. There is a children’s menu available as well. And for dessert, be sure to try the cheese platter with fresh Icelandic cheese served with biscuits and caramelized onion. The Hotel Husafell allows guests to experience all the beauty of Iceland while also offering a taste of the local culture, tradition and hospitality. Northern Lights across Hraunfoss Waterfalls

artist, Pall Gudmundsson. Guests can also enjoy outdoor thermal pools and hot tubs. If you’re a golfer, you’re in luck as the hotel has a nine-hole course with special hours allowing guests to play under the magnificent midnight sun. A typical day during your stay at the hotel will begin with a complimentary Icelandic breakfast followed by a hike through the many miles of trails that will take you through dense woods, lava formations, and glaciers. The hotel also offers a variety of day tours such as riding a super jeep through the rough Iceland terrain and up to the top of Iceland’s second largest glacier. Guests can also hike to the Hraunfossar waterfalls, cascading from under the lava fields into a river below.

There are also numerous lava fields around the hotel that are close to lava caves including the caves of Surtshellir and Víðgelmir, some of the largest lava caves in the world. Guests can also take a tour to the ice cave of Langjokull, Europe’s second largest glacier sitting at about 1200 meters above sea level. If hiking does not catch your interest then take to the sky. You can book an airplane tour through the hotel on a “flightseeing” expedition for a bird’s eye view of the beautiful Hasafell landscape. The hotel’s gourmet restaurant features floor-toceiling windows where diners gaze upon Eiriksjokull Glacier glistening under the midnight sun of summer, or the magical Northern Lights of winter

WHERE TO PARTY Wall Lounge will host a number of afterparties and after afterparties during the week. On December 3, DJ and producer Davide Squillace, in collaboration with creative laboratory Boiler Corporation, Blender thinks and re-stages the club experience merging dance music, design technology and contemporary arts and brings this collaboration to Wall Lounge at the W Hotel. The idea of each Blender event is to record data from the night to be mixed and processed in order to create an artwork or a design piece. The ‘data’ effectively stems from the live music set as well as the images and environmental sounds, tangible testimony of the crowd behavior. Blender Sculpture 1 was produced in collaboration with Belgian artist Frederick De Wilde and presented during Art Basel 2015. The project has then established a collaboration with Recipient Collective, who designed an innovative ad-hoc software to gather live data from the clubnight and generate a 3D artwork. Blender draws inspiration from the Futurist manifestos, Fluxus’s disdain for hierarchy and from the heritage of techno club culture. The project aims at drawing new relationships between sound and image, artist and audience, venue and exhibition space, redefining the role of music -and the body- in the universal context of creation.

LUXURIOUS ISLAND ESCAPES TO BARBADOS Saint Peter’s Bay Luxury Resort and Residences By Don Fetherman

A palm-fringed white sand beach, crystal clear aquamarine sea, ice-cold drinks savoured on sun loungers around an enticing swimming pool, oceanside gazebo dining, classy cocktails sipped under the stars, service with a smile, family, old friends, new friends, a water taxi to take you to the spa, as much or as little to do as you wish, total

relaxation and a sense of bliss …. Welcome to life at Saint Peter’s Bay. The luxurious one to five-bedroom beachfront residences at Saint Peter’s Bay Luxury Resort on the famed West Coast of Barbados are undoubtedly extremely desirable homes, complete with

first class amenities, but it is the exceptional Barbadian staff that make this resort so special by going that extra mile to ensure that residents enjoy a happy vacation. A peep at Saint Peter’s Bay on Trip Advisor will reveal a recurring pattern of happy guests mentioning staff members by name, often referring to something that helped make their stay extra special – perhaps as simple as finding a child’s favorite breakfast cereal or as unexpected as an invitation to join a local group of early morning ocean swimmers. The Saint Peter’s Bay team know how to have fun in their own country, and they are happy to share some of the island’s simple pleasures with their guests. That is why the resort’s planned activities include pastimes that locals enjoy, like hiking in remote locations, picnics in hidden beauty spots, fun-filled beach barbecues, swimming with the turtles or a fishing trip to the reef. Life is for living, and these uniquely Bajan experiences can create lifetime memories that make a stay at Saint Peter’s Bay much more than just a vacation. A number of residences are available for purchase, and the resort’s holiday rental programme provides a practical way for prospective buyers to enjoy the Saint Peter’s Bay experience first hand. The resort’s healthy rental program also affords an opportunity for homeowners to recover some of their costs. An attractive purchase package includes dutyfree furniture and, very significantly, easy access to the wide range of additional first-class facilities at sister resort Port Ferdinand Marina & Luxury Residences, which can be reached by the group’s water-taxi. A select number of yacht berths at Port Ferdinand are also available for Saint Peter’s Bay owners.

JW MARRIOTT CANCUN Escape Reality By Emily Rose

ancun, a college spring break destination? At the luxurious JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa, you’d never guess. Infinity pools, Balinese-style beachfront lounges, and an ocean view suite makes this destination a very grown-up getaway. At this resort & spa, find private, white-sand beaches in the center of the hotel zone. Enjoy the morning breeze from a private balcony while looking out at the vibrant blue waters of the Caribbean. The hotel, situated between Laguna Nichupte and the ocean, offers direct access to the beach as well as several pools. Before arriving, guests have the capability to digitally pre-book a Bali bed - a full-service cabana directly on the sand. Our favorite moments at the JW Marriott included sipping margaritas in the shade while watching the sun set over calm ocean waters.

For those who get a bit antsy on the beach, there’s plenty to explore beyond the beach itself. The resort offers sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling and water sports - all available through the property’s dedicated concierge. If you’re a history buff, the JW Marriott is a quick trip away from the ruins of Chichen Itza & Tulum. Rich in Mayan History, Chichen Itza is an excellent day-trip destination - the tower of El Castillo, one of the new seven wonders of the world, is a must-visit in the region. Alternatively, Tulum has become a popular resort & lifestyle destination, as well as an archaeological landmark. Built on the coast, exploring the ruins in the morning can be a way to beat the heat and enjoy the natural beauty of the Mayan Riviera. Back at the resort, enjoy a bite at one of the 9 restaurants on-property - with offerings spanning from steakhouses, to Italian, to Thai. Gustino Ital-

ian Grill, the most formal of the resort’s dining options, is a truly special experience. Delicious homemade pizzas, a wide variety of pasta, and an impressive selection of wine make for a satisfying meal in a sophisticated setting. In keeping with the local culture, the JW Marriott offers a Mayan-inspired spa facility. Appointments are required, so speak to the concierge or call in advance of your stay. Relax with a soothing massage, work up a sweat in a variety of fitness classes, or rejuvenate with a luxurious facial. The spa is situated with beautiful views, and a highly experienced staff of aestheticians. Cancun is truly a timeless getaway for any discerning traveler - and the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa offers a unique and unforgettable way to experience this beautiful destination.

PAPER FACTORY HOTEL Long Island City By Bennett Marcus worked with Miami-based curator Oliver Gal, which represents edgy, younger artists. He strove to remain cost-conscious on the project, because the rooms are large, and priced under $300 per night, a rarity in New York.

Restaurant Mundo, the restaurant, is popular with both locals and hotel guests. “What we do there is dishes from all over the world, and because, we have a lot of international guests coming, everyone can relate to a dish that your grandmother made, or your mom made,” Sela explained. He added that while the atmosphere is upscale, the prices are reasonable. The bar at Mundo is also very active, offering an excellent mixology program and specialty cocktails. Extravagant Parties

Developer Gal Sela One of NYC’s hippest hotels, the Paper Factory, came to exist by accident, and its owner, Gal Sela, found a new career in the process. Sela, a real estate developer, was planning to convert the former factory in Long Island City into a youth hostel. Just weeks before construction was to begin, New York City enacted new zoning laws banning youth hostels.

Artists, Musicians & Actors Sela decided to turn the place into a hotel, but realized it needed to stand out from the crowd. “Nobody really needed another hotel.” he said. His goal was to attract artists, musicians and actors to the hotel and its acclaimed restaurant, Mundo. It’s location is conveniently adjacent to the Kaufman Studios in Queens, where many television shows and movies shoot, so creative people are always in the area. It’s also a short ride to Midtown Manhattan, and, Sela pointed out, parking is easy in this area.

Industrial Chic He spent a year reimagining the space, sourcing décor from around the globe. “I decided let’s go with it all the way. The furniture is state-of-the-art. Every piece in the hotel is unique. I traveled all over, to Europe and Morocco, and Vietnam, China, India, Israel and Turkey, and picked a lot of the items.” The result he describes as “very industrial chic,” incorporating a lot of the existing factory elements, like printing machines and doors from the old elevators. They polished the concrete floors, and saved the old wooden floors.

Emerging Artists & Unique Finishes Sela chose all the finishes and furnishings himself, working closely with architect David Howell of the firm DHD. A library of 4,000 old books was turned into a column - literally, there is a column made of books. Curtains in the rooms are denim, sustainably made in the U.S. For artwork, Sela

The Paper Factory’s annual summer party has become an institution since the hotel opened in late 2013. Sela’s birthday falls on July 31, and that was the impetus for the party; the first one attracted four hundred people, so they decided to make it an annual happening. This summer, 3,500 people turned out for the July 28 bash. “We had a lot of different artists and musicians, and we had this crazy, crazy party,” he laughed. LIVING IT UP IN PARK CITY By Nathalie Barclay

I

f you’re from New York or maybe just like musicals, odds are you associate Utah with two things: mormons and Book of Mormon. But obviously, as with most places, the story is much more complicated, and Utah is more than just mormon country. In 2002, Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Olympics, bringing a lot of good press and tourism to the area. A big beneficiary of this was Park City, a city forty-five minutes away from Salt Lake City airport, and where most of the mountain events were held (bobsleigh, ski jumping, luge, etc.). Since then, Park City’s economy has boomed as a tourist hot spot, first in winter for winter sports, and more recently in summer for hiking and mountain biking. It is even the location of the Sundance Film Festival, the largest independent film festival in the US. With all this attention, Park City has grown and grown, and has become a veritable resort town. Finding a place to stay in Park City is hard to do, but not because of lack of options. It’s actually quite the opposite. There are so many areas to stay, like Deer Valley or Park City that it can be hard to choose. With the merging of two companies, the result, Resorts West, is truly one of the best places to stay for your visit to Park City. These luxury accommodations have everything you could possibly want, whether it be spacious bedrooms, a hot tub, or even a home movie theater. They also offer many ski-in, ski-out homes, making it that much easier to get on the slopes whenever the urge hits you.

tion is where to ski (or whichever snow sport you like to do). Park City really has every level run you could want and you can choose between Park City and Deer Valley Resort. Both have amazing lift views and access, dream-worthy runs, and wonderful restaurants and shops waiting for you at the bottom. During the summer, the hikes are beautiful and scenic, and there are over 400 miles of mountain biking trails!

If you’re there during the winter, the next ques-

If you’re not into skiing or hiking, there are other

fun activities at your fingertips. Keeping on the mountain, there are rides like zip lining or rollercoasters. If you’re more into shopping, there are countless shops throughout the city, but most notably on Main Street. There is also the Park Silly Sunday Market where you can find everything from beautiful crafts and tasty food, to stands filled with silly or joke products perfect for gifts. If you’re a chocolate lover, you can’t go to Park City without dropping by Ritual Chocolate, a coffee and chocolate shop where the chocolate

is made in-house, starting right from the cacao beans. The beans are from around the world and are top quality, the 1% of the 1%, making the chocolate some of the best you have ever had. But perhaps the thing that worries people from big cities is the quality of the restaurants. Food is often a big determinant in the appeal of a location, even if the town is full of fun activities and shops. A lot of the time, we expect cities like Park City to have lots of subpar restaurants, most of which boast fried food with little quality and high fat. This is once again far from the truth, so far it’s actually laughable. If you’re visiting Park City, you’re spoiled with amazing food and restaurant choices. A good place to start is Handle. The food is local and constantly changes with the seasons. Their most popular dishes, or maybe their most mouthwatering are the Pappardelle, the Cauliflower in buffalo hot wing fashion and blue cheese, and their award winning Caramel Pudding.

farming technology that combines aquaculture (growing fish) and hydroponics (growing produce in nutrient-rich soil). For breakfast, the Bridge Café & Grill is located just five feet away from the lift with the best views of the mountain. For close access to Deer Valley Resort, Deer Valley Grocery Café is a wonderful place to eat right on the lake. Tupelo serves brunch to rival any New York brunch spot, with the menu constantly changing with the local produce markets and offering their own Bloody Mary bar (where you put your own toppings, spices, and decorations). For lunch, the Legends Bar and Grill is perfect for a refreshing salad, Silver Star Café for hearth-fired pizza, Windy Ridge Restaurant for a turkey sandwich, and Snack Shack for a pick-me-up.

There’s also an exciting nightlife in Park City, bars lining Main Street. For a cocktail, O.P. Rockwell is unmissable, and if you’re unsure what to get, the bartender (really a mixologist) will find just the drink for you through simple Q&A. For whiskey, the High West Distillery will offer you the best whiskies, notably their own, made right there on the premises. For more of a pub scene, the historical No Name Saloon is a must. In Winter, make sure to do their shot-ski! Aside from the beautiful views of mountains and forests, there are such great accommodations, activities, and food that it hardly seems like you should go elsewhere! visitparkcity.com

Another great dinner restaurant is Sushi Blue Grill & Sake House. This Japanese restaurant is truly to die for, with clever and fun names for the rolls like Salmon L. Jackson, the Krusty Krab, and the Jerry Riceless. An interesting fact about this restaurant and multiple others in the city is that they are owned by a man named Bill White who sources much of the restaurants’ produce from his own farm, Bill White Farms. The farm also has a mission to use traditional agriculture to support the local ecosystem, and they are even working on their own self-sustainable aquaponic farm, a hybrid

rooted in tradition. The Montage not only offers hotel accommodations but offers properties for sale. The resort features 200 guest accommodations, six inspired dining locations, Paintbox Children’s programming, Signature Spa Montage and over 16,000 sq. ft. of meeting and event spaces. The resort also features an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course as well as tennis, bocce and croquet courts at the Wilson Lawn and Racquet Club, boating at Wilson Landing, Longfield Stables, and the Palmetto Bluff shooting club Upon entering the 20,000-acre Palmetto Bluff property guests will instantly feel at ease. Driving down the road at snail’s pace to take in the surroundings, guests will arrive at the beautiful hotel. While driving up to the veranda to await valet it is quickly evident with all the bikes and

golf carts neatly arranged, that once your car is parked there will be no need for it again until you begrudgingly have to check out. Walking and biking seem to be the preferred form of travel throughout the resort, with a signature Southern cocktail in hand, of course. In 2016, Montage Palmetto Bluff added 152 new guest accommodations in addition to the 48 existing guest cottages to the already existing property. Additionally, they added 35 Montage branded residences which are selling fast. The Inn is a replica of owner R.T. Wilson Jr.’s dwelling, of which the ruins can be seen on property, having burned down in the early 1900s. Walking in, it is quickly evident that the South really is unique and beautiful, as there is no other place in the world that captures the same architectural designs. Before arriving to the room you can take a quick tour of the octagon shaped bar, Carolina

room, patio, and even library, before entering a room fit for a king. As beautiful as the room is, with a gorgeous view overlooking the bridge and water ways, a couch and bathroom equipped with a claw foot tub with speakers, there’s too much to do to spend time in the room. With three pools, two gyms and a spa, where a celebrity hair stylist is available full time to give guests custom cuts, waking up early to start the day is a must. After a quick workout and spa, bicycle over to one of the on-site restaurants. Check out Buffalos for a comforting Southern Breakfast buffet on the patio. Enjoy a one of a kind meal at Jessamine, which serves up true Southern charm and chops. Jessamine –named after South Carolina’s state flower – is one of Montage Palmetto Bluff’s newest restaurants. Embracing the South’s iconic and warm hospitality, it offers all-day dining options including breakfast classics with views of the sunrise, bolder flavors and creative steakhouse twists for lunch, and dinner. Located next to a chapel, perfect for intimate weddings, is the Palmetto Bluff history center, which hosts its own archaeologist, due to the rich historic background

of the land. Relax with fishing poles out by the lake, or spend some time kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding in the surrounding tributaries. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy the May River Golf Club, where Jack Nicklaus has carefully woven a signature 18-hole golf course into the fabric of Palmetto Bluff. Winding past shady live oaks and palmettos along the high bluffs of the May River, golfers can enjoy the game in peace and serenity, interrupted only by the sights and sounds of nature. Guests can also spend time at the Longfield Stables’, a 173acre farm boarding and training facility that stands out among the best in the country. The Stables include a covered arena, a FEI regulation outdoor dressage arena, a 5-acre turf event field available for schooling horses and special events, main barn, and receiving barn, featuring oversized stalls and a 15-mile trail system. Explore the Palmetto Bluff Shooting Club, ideal for novices and experts alike. The Club features 13 sporting clay stations winding through an expansive 40-acre forest, an elevated and covered five-stand station, plus a wobble deck field making for a total of 15 shooting sites. The course is

designed to provide a fun and challenging recreational shooting environment for all. For those not comfortable with picking up a shotgun, they are welcome to replace it with a tennis racket at the expansive Wilson Lawn & Racquet Club, featuring eight Har-Tru tennis courts, two croquet lawns, two bocce courts, four courtside shelters and a 2,715-square-foot Pro Shop and pavilion. Clinics, drills, tournaments and lessons for tennis, croquet and bocce are available. Don’t miss out on the 5:00PM fire cooked Southern hors’ devourers. RISING STAR - VIOLETT BEANE

URBANITE

S

hooting to fame in a flash, Violett Beane is best known for her role as Jesse Quick in The CW series “The Flash.” While the television centers on Grant Gustin who portrays Flash/Barry Allen, Beane joined the series in its second season. As the daughter of Earth 2, Harrison Wells played by Tom Cavanagh, Beane is excited at the prospect of turning into a full superhero in the series’ third season. A native of St. Petersburg, Florida, Beanne moved to Austin, Texas at the age of 10. Uncovering her passion for performing arts during her middle school years, Beane knew she had a knack for performing. However, it was not until her final year of high school that she finally turned her focus to Hollywood. Beane went onto book a recurring role on HBO series, “The Leftovers.” In season 2, Beane portrayed Taylor Truitt, a character hailing from Jarden, Texas, who goes missing along with two other girls. Garnering attention from her role as Jesse Quick, Beane’s film career has also been gaining traction. Two of Beane’s film premiered at the 2016 South By Southwest Film Festival. “Slash,” an indie comedy along with “Tower,” a movie centered on the UT shooting in 1966. Beane plays Claire Wilson, who was eight months pregnant during the shooting but loses her baby and boyfriend because of the tragedy. While the movie made its premiere at the festival, “Tower,” produced by Luke Wilson and Meredith Viera was released nationwide in October 2016. While Beane may be known for portraying a happy-go-lucky superhero on “The Flash,” the talented actress has carved a niche out in dramatic acting. An already impressive resume for a 19-year old actress, Beane can now add director to her title. The budding actress recently directed, edited and starred in “Landscape,” a music video for the band Eyelid Kid. While her acting career keeps her occupied, Beane spends her free time lending her voice to raising awareness on rape violence, gun control and abortion rights. In her down time, the animal lover enjoys cuddling with her bunny Milo while binge watching “Fixer Upper,” which inspires her to do DIY renovations of her home.

SMALL CAST, BIG AMBITIONS The Encounter, Nat Turner in Jerusalem, Marie and Rosetta and A Taste of Honey By Barry Bassis

S

imon McBurney manages to expand the boundaries of theater while at the same time he returns to the simplest of forms. In The Encounter, he appears on stage in the one-man show while each member of the audience listens to sounds on headphones handed out before the show begins. The work deals with an American photographer, Loren McIntyre, who was stranded in the Brazilian rainforest, and his encounters with tribesmen. Neither speaks the other’s language but he develops a relationship with the head shaman, whom he calls Barnacle.

Through the remarkable sound design by Gareth Fry and Pete Malkin, the audience experiences insects, conflagrations and a number of other dramatic events. McBurney is a thoughtful writer and an expressive performer, but the work becomes wearing after a while. Perhaps video projections showing the jungle and its residents would have added to the dramatic effect. As the nation still struggles with issues of race, Nat Turner has suddenly become a center of interest on stage and screen. Nate Parker’s provocative The Birth of a Nation is in movie theaters, while the low-key Nat Turner in Jerusalem is at New York Theater Workshop. Turner was the leader of the bloody slave uprising in 1831. Nathan Alan Davis’s play takes place the day before his execution. There are three characters: Turner, Thomas R. Gray (his lawyer, who published his client’s alleged confessions) and a sympathetic jailer. The Jerusalem in the title is not the one in the Holy Land but the town in Virginia, where the trial took place. Turner is a messianic character, who speaks in Biblical tones. He effectively sets forth the evils of slavery but opposed it with extreme violence, including the slaughter of children. As Turner, Phillip James Brannon is impressive; Rowan Vickers, who plays both Gray and the guard doesn’t do enough to distinguish between the two.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915-1973) was a groundbreaking artist, a singer-songwriter-guitarist, who mixed gospel music and jazz (a controversial combination at the time). Her life and art are celebrated at the Atlantic Theater in the entertaining two-character musical Marie and Rosetta. Marie Knight was a young gospel singer, whom Tharpe heard performing with Mahalia Jackson. Tharpe thought that the young woman’s voice would blend well with hers and so would their instrumental work, since Marie played piano. George Brant’s play takes place in a funeral home in Mississippi in 1946, where, because of segregation, the two women were forced to spend the night before their performance. The experienced and sharp-tongued Tharpe gives tips on performing and how to live in a racist male-dominated culture to the young woman. Both Kecia Lewis as Tharpe and Rebecca Naomi Jones as Knight excel as singers and actresses. Though they appear to be playing their instruments, actually there are two men offstage who handle the instrumentals. Marie and Rosetta is well directed by Neil Pepe. In 1959, the 18-year old playwright Shelagh Delaney created a sensation with her first work, A Taste of Honey. Set in a working class neighborhood in northern England, the play deals with a teenage girl with an alcoholic mother, who abandons her. The girl is impregnated by a black sailor and is cared for by a gay man. As beautifully directed by Austin Pendleton, The Pearl Theater revival of A Taste of Honey makes the play as fresh as ever. Rachel Botchan is convincing as the amoral Helen, Bradford Cover is the lout she takes up with, John Evans Reese is the sympathetic friend and, best of all, Rebekah Brockman is the resilient Jo. The on-stage jazz trio is another plus.

PIP’S ISLAND: Like Nothing Else

An experience three years in the making is unfolding in Manhattan, ready to surprise, delight and challenge children in a fantastic new way. Pip’s Island launched Nov. 12 at Chelsea’s Skylight Modern as a mixture of entertainment and interactive learning. Audiences, in groups of fifty comprised of 4-10 year olds and their caregivers, are guided through a one-hour quest to save a magical island from villainous powers. Children are challenged to complete milestone activities to move forward through the story and must work together to progress. The creators of Pip’s Island, a sister and brother team of Rania Ajami and Rami Ajami, have developed a world using elaborate decor and sets as the backdrop but the interactive activities. The audience is guided by a cast of actors and puppets. Careful planning and consideration played in the development of the story as well as the challenges given the children. The experience plays on the themes of cognitive and social development as well as a sense of social good as the children work together to “save the island” as Rania summed up the show. Pip’s Island is revolutionary in a number of ways. As Rami explained, the concept of developing engaging characters and stories without the aid of pre-existing media (comic book, television series, etc) was an adjustment for some investors. However, the result of the creative work is somewhat magical. The adventure show has an energy that pulses through the hour and well beyond, leaving the audience happily wanting for the next evolution of Pip’s Island. pipsisland.com

Splashed, Poured, Dripped and Diluted The Individual Images of Kasha Ritter

The

work of Artist Kasha Ritter is truly unique.

Not only does she have her own individual style, she also creates her striking images using a technique that she discovered on her own and has honed through the production of 100s of works. Using acrylic ink splashed, poured, dripped, diluted and then manipulated, Ms. Ritter creates lively colorful images that are almost a cross between abstract and realist art.

A portion of all proceeds from the sale of Kasha’s art at the Angels of East Africa Gala will be donated to The Angels of East Africa Organization. Thank you for your support of this incredible organization.

“I tend to gravitate towards organized messes,” says Ms. Ritter. “I love to make a mess, tear things apart and then put them back together. That's part of the fun.” After years of working in technical illustration and graphic art, Ms. Ritter started off attempting to recreate life in as realistic a way as possible. A happy accident led her in a completely different direction. “One night I took a brand new canvas and some acrylic ink,” she says. “I liked that the ink was fluid. I had never used it before. I was trying to figure out what I was going to do with this super watery media.” That proved to be a moment of inspiration.“As I'm pulling the ink off the canvas with a dropper it made a shape that looked like a flower,” says Ms. Ritter. True to character, she opted to just go with the flow, in more ways than one. It's taken almost a decade of

experimentation – lots of trial and error - to get to the point where she is now.The process that she has developed is quite involved. “I take a glass dropper and squeeze out a line of color with the ink,” Says Ms. Ritter.“Add water or a gel medium and the color of the ink will follow the water, or the water will follow the color.” Although the process is largely organic, Ms. Ritter's talent as a

Artist Kasha Ritter

draftsman is apparent in her work. Skillfully executed images of animals, flowers and objects emerge from the swirls, splashes and “blooms” of color. Her subjects range from abstracts to flowers to an odd assortment of objects – a boot, a windmill, a whiskey bottle. But what Ms. Ritter really loves to capture is animals. She's created hundreds of images of cats, dogs, horses, birds and other pets. There's an entire series of horse races, not surprising since Ms. Ritter moved to the Vineyard just last year from Louisville, Kentucky. The artist gets a lot of commissions for animal portraits and other custom pieces. She also sells her original work and prints on a site called pixels.com. You can order dozens of Ms. Ritter's images in a variety of sizes and surfaces with prices starting at $15. – Gwyn McAlister Contact Kasha Ritter: e: kashabritter@mac.com w: www.kasha-ritter.pixels.com a: P. BOOKS du JOUR NOVEMBER 2016 By Frederic Colier | General@bookcasetv.com

my life

“Shining Sea,” by Anne Korkeakivi (Little, Brown and Company, pp 282, $ 26.00)

“Heads,” by Jesse Jarnow (Da Capo Press, pp 468, $27.99)

“Forty Autumns” by Nina Willner (William Morrow, pp 397, $27.99)

“The Natural Way of Things,” by Charlotte Wood (Europa Editions, pp 233, $17.00)

“Where Memory Leads” by Saul Friedländer. (Other Press, pp 284, $24.95)

Sophomore novels have the reputation to be always the hardest one to produce, especially if the breaking-out novel was a success or generated buzzing reviews. Self-pressure being often the cause, as the challenge to recapture the lengthy feat, embedded in the first published novel, is insurmountable for authors. It is not the case for “Shining Sea.” Though not a fan of multi-generational novel, I tip my hat at Anne Korkeakivi’s second novel. Recapturing she managed indeed, and with verve and energy. Recapturing here acts a crucial word, since I was reminded at once, and not to a detriment, to Woolf’s obvious “To the Lighthouse,” where the protagonist spends her day looking out the window, but rather at “Moments of Being,” her long essay on the creative process. Something today, we refer to as being present in the moment. By being completely present in an experience, we expose ourselves to possible epiphanies. And the most trivial moments are elevated in “Shining Sea,” Korkeakivi’s use of the present tense going a long way to invite the readers to connect immediately with the emotional plights of her characters.

If you are a fan of books dealing with the history of salt, timber or something more exotic like sex, you will delight in “Heads,” a book about psychedelics. Though the term has now gained multiple definitions, notably in relation to music and culture, the psychedelics refer to here belong to drugs, yes narcotics. A well-time book, given the massive popular wave to legalize Marijuana. However, you will find no bell chiming in favor of psych drugs.

The title spells it all. “Forty Autumns,” is about survival on both sides of the Berlin Wall. If you know the history of the Cold War, you will quickly infer that we are talking about two different kinds of survival. East and West spell out different hardships. In the case of the East, we are dealing with communist repression on all fronts in a Big-Brother-like society, restriction of liberties, listening, spying, suspecting, ideological enforcement, in brief, a constant climate of distrust and cultivated fear. For the West, the survival is more nuanced. It comes from isolation, fragmented family, unfulfilled desires, which has been severed by the Berlin Wall.

Though not her first novel, “The Natural Way of Things” is Charlotte Wood’s first print in the States. Better late than never, and it is wholly deserved. It is an interesting book to come out at the time of perhaps the strangest presidential campaign ever, where one of the candidates is plagued with accusation of sexism. And this makes it hard to avoid the metaphorical subtext of Wood’s novel, reminiscent of Atwood’s “Handmaid’s Tale,” since we are dealing with women and sexuality in a repressive and controlling corporate-like society. Though I do not believe that women have anything to do to prove their competence and rights in this world, the protagonists of Wood’s novel are women deprived of rights and live a Kafkaesque nightmare.

If you remember the Pulitzer Prize winning book, “The Years of Extermination,” you will know at once that this review refers to Saul Friedländer. If you also know that he spent sixteen years writing his magnum opus, you could claim that he spent 80 years writing his new memoir “Where Memories Leads.” It is riveting account, the coda marking a life intertwined with the Holocaust, a project already initiated with his first memoir “When Memory Comes,” published more then thirty years ago (a book rereleased at same time). Besides from the heart-wrenching topic depicting the trauma of a childhood spent during the Third Reich, watching his parents being deported, the memoirs have a different tone. The former deals with a man struggling with comprehension and uncertain answers about his life, at the peak of it, while the second has the feel of a man looking at his journey, with the mindset that he has reached the sunset of his life. The questions have been fulfilled, unless he is now reluctant to open new paths. With resignation comes insight.

Written in a sparse, unaffected, style, this family saga takes us straight into the universe of the Gannon’s family. Following the death of Michael Gannon, Barbara, his widow, is left alone with four kids and one still gestating, and must now confront a major readjustment in her life. The time is 1962. Rolling back the clock to post WWII, Korkeakivi displays her true talent in her ability to show how lives cross paths and disperse again in other parts of the country, while keeping all the threads intriguing. Where an amateur’s schema would have lost us, Korkeakivi’s spontaneous prose delivers a thoroughly compelling story of personal struggles in the face of grief, held together by the endless hope for self-renewal.

Jesse Jarnow has dug deep into the roots of Psychedelia. For a generation, which perceived itself as living in a repressive society, music became the catalyst of a cultural revolution, the bedfellow able to unleash repressed psychological emotions. If Grateful Dead means anything to you, I will set you on your course, as you may wonder what “New Age practices, hacktivism, yoga, natural childbirth, Burning Man, Central Park graffiti, with artist like Bilrock and the late Keith Haring, and the internet, have in common. The answer may surprise you.

128 | resident.com

In this well-documented spiraling history of how these drugs transformed our present culture, Jesse Jarnow offers a fresh outlook. While we can talk about peyote and other forms of LSD derivatives, it is impossible to understand the meaning of Psychedelic without going back to the 60’s, starting first as a counter-culture on the eve of the Vietnam War and the Civil Right Movements. Thinking Huxley having a bad trip in “Doors of Perception,” or Leary’s promoting drugs in Harvard, via Richard Alpert, aka Ram Dass, experiencing a spiritual awakening, would confine the movement to known anecdotes.

In this historical memoir, Nina Willner tells us the story of her family, the escape of her mother, Hannah, into the West, and her struggle to survive away from her family. A family she would only be reunited to 40 years later, after the fall of the Wall. “Forty Autumns,” emphasizes the metaphor that sometime politics and ideologies act as crushing silent forces standing in the way of families, and their reconciliation. What makes the book stand out from other memoirs comes from the author’s real life situation. Nina Willner worked for the American Intelligence and got to be stationed in Berlin, during the cold war, just a few miles away from her Eastern family . . . and got to lead missions into the Eastern block. No matter what, human spirit always prevails.

Yolanda, the heroine of this dystopian novel, wakes up one morning in the middle of Australian desert, dressed in rags, and not remembering how she ended locked up into a ward. She however quickly learns that along with her roommate, Verla, that they are now captives of a strange repressive system, exercising a kind of corporate control on their every move. The reason that binds them is the scarlet letter they wore, a past sexual scandal. Very quickly, rather than accepting to be captives in a place where women are drudged and must live in fear, they escape into the wild. More than a story where the hunted becomes the hunter, they must develop the skills of survival and trust. In a world fraught with violence, they must find resilience and seek redemption.

Friedländer’s life has been defined by his “monumental” contribution to Holocaust Studies. The book spans his whole life, from his birth at the worse possible time, the beginning of WWII, to present day, fitting perhaps the cliché that most Jews encountered after the war: finding a home, moving from country to country, if not continent to continent. The book clearly stipulates that Friedlander found a home in the intellectual journey of his own childhood and destroyed Jewish heritage, by building a defense and knowledge that could not be taken away from him. It ultimately cemented his strong Jewish identity. This makes for a different stance, more confident, accepting, resigned, engaged and engaging.

SAND, SUN, AND GAZELLES

Iconic Women’s Desert Rally holds 27th annual contest in Morocco this March 2017 By Elizabeth Darwen

S

ince its inception in the early 1990s the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc has been a pioneer, never ceasing to grow, constantly developing and evolving with the times and always faithful to its founding values: courage, the desire to push one’s limits, loyalty, solidarity and social commitment. 2017 marks the 27th annual desert rallye, which takes place between March 17 and April 1, 2017 in the unspoiled beauty of the Moroccan desert. The Rallye respects both the scenery of the host country as well as its people through the actions of the Rallye’s non-profit, Cœur de Gazelles, as well as the environment: the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is the only motor Rallye in the world with ISO 14001 certification. The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is a unique, oncein-a-lifetime adventure. Firstly, it is the only international off-road Rallye race for women only. Since 1990 the Rallye has been bringing together women of all ages from more than 30 different countries, who embark on an adventure of a lifetime from the French city of Nice on March 18th, 2017 and onward to the start of the Rallye in the Moroccan desert. The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is developing a new vision of automobile competition: not based on excessive speed nor technology (no GPS), just old-fashioned map based navigation and complete-

ly off-road. All Rallye participants, known as “Gazelles” leave this adventure marked changed by the experience: they push their limits, have to face themselves, far from their stressful daily lives as women; there is also a strong element of sharing and mutual aid with their teammate as well as with the other “Gazelles”. But while the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is a return to the roots of adventure, it is also, with its satellite system for tracking the teams, on the cutting edge of technology when it comes to ensuring participant safety. This duality is one of the strengths of this unusual competition. With its unique concept, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc is changing the way people view competitive automobile use. The goal for the participating Gazelles is to drive the shortest possible distance to reach a series of predefined checkpoints. Free to choose their own route, they face a challenge every day: to study the map and the day’s geographical coordinates, analyze the risks and difficulties of the terrain and choose the shortest path. They have the choice of driving around a mountain or crossing over it, driving through the dunes or avoiding them...

headings and distances of the day’s checkpoints and finish line. Forget about GPS, phones and other modern communication tools: using a compass, a navigational plotter and maps, they have to plot their route and plan their itinerary. The Gazelle’s competitive rankings are determined by calculating the extra kilometers driven (distance driven between check points minus crow flies distance) and penalty kilometers for any check points not reached. The winning team is the one that finds the greatest number of checkpoints while driving the least number of kilometers. Morocco has played the key role as the host country of the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles since its inception. Gazelles in search of nature and the great outdoors will find themselves seduced by the magnificent and varied landscapes of Morocco, with its sand dunes, rocky mountains, green valleys, fertile plains, arid plateaus and lush oases. The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc takes place under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who has authorized the use of the Royal Coat of Arms on the Gazelles’ vests. This is the only event that has ever been granted this honor. Rallyeaichadesgazelles.com

Every morning the Gazelles receive a document which contains only the geographic coordinates or

LET US GIVE THANKS at Thanksgiving By Jane Pontarelli

T

hanksgiving is a time of reflection on how lucky we all are. You my loyal pet lovers will love this story, about giving thanks and rescuing. I introduce you to Kathy and Lou, a pet loving family… In 2006 their world came crashing down, for their beloved Boca a Bichon who was 13 and a half was called to the Rainbow Bridge. Kathy and Lou whose children were grown were longing to fill the sadness and void in their lives.. Kathy told me that the house was so quiet and still that she decided to fill that void, even Lou, said he would never have a pet again was on board. Their grown children were gone and agreed that their parents should fill their life with joy. I asked Kathy and Lou what they missed most ? And to narrow it down, they missed mealtime with Boca, for he would sit and wait for his dinner and was a perfect gentlemen. Boca had been well trained. After a few months Kathy could not stand the quiet in the house. Hello internet. Kathy at this time in her life decided she wanted to rescue. 10 years ago this was not so much on our radar screen. Kathy, a former high power business person in the past, did it like a business, did her homework, and as she stated in our interview she really wanted to save a life, little did she realize at the time she would save 2.

Enter Daisy and Haiya, who were born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on August 10, 2006. Their mom was a puppy mill dog and was rescued by Small Paws Rescue, a Bichon and Bichon mix rescue organization based in Tulsa and of course she was pregnant. She delivered 4 puppies in the vet’s office. The 2 little male puppies didn’t make it and the 2 female puppies went to be fostered by a wonderful group called Small Paws Rescue’s. The head of adoptions is a wonderful women named Bonnie Ferguson. While the girls lived with Bonnie, Daisy would help her with “adoption paperwork”. . It was then that Kathy found Small Paws Rescue in a dog magazine that she had subscribed to. Kathy called Small Paws, never thinking that she would find a fur baby to replace Boca. This is called a leap of faith, Kathy called Robin Pressnall, the founder and director of Small Paws Rescue and talked with her for awhile to find out more about Small Paws Rescue. Kathy talked about losing Boca and how sad she and her family were. Robin said she would keep them in mind, after a few weeks Kathy had given up hope, Robin called back, with good news and bad, Robin told Kathy she had 2 females but they were bonded, and had to be kept together. Kathy after seeing their pictures fell in love, and said she would take them. So, enter Daisy and Haiya, there new names and new destinations, the girls were put in a crate and shipped via air to Bradley International Airport in Hartford, CT. Kathy Lou, and their son Frank, went to pick the girls up and when they saw their cute little faces in that crate just hugging each other, they knew right then and there they made the right decision, for Kathy took a leap of faith, something that many of us do not do. So Daisy and Haiya, who came from nothing but a poor puppy mill mother are 2 Princesses living with Kathy and Lou. Till this day the girls bring nothing but joy and

134 | resident.com

happiness to their family. Pictured in this article are the girls with their sister Nicole, (Photo by Annie Watt) who is Kathy and Lou’s daughter. Nicole loves taking them for walks and dressing them up in the latest doggy couture. So take that leap of faith and rescue, you will rescue wonderful abandoned pets, and they will rescue you. It is a win win situation.. The Princesses just celebrated their 10th birthday, and Kathy and Lou gave them a big party.. Remember RESCUE… SAD NEWS. I recently lost my Lulu, who was 14 years old. She died in my arms and I am crushed. I now will RESCUE and God will put a fur baby in my path, who will rescue me.
