A TIME TO CELEBRATE
W
ith only two more months left in 2017, it’s time to celebrate everything that we have done this year and reap the rewards of everything we have worked so hard to achieve. During Thanksgiving it’s a time to celebrate all of the priceless things in our life such as our family, friends, health, and happiness. Our cover girl this month is Brooklyn native Jessica Pimentel who is not only an acclaimed actress but a talented musician bringing her spirited attitude from the screen to the stage. We had the privilege to shoot our cover in the gorgeous 78th floor penthouse at the Four Seasons Residences with panoramic views over the city. Read her exclusive interview by Josh Estrin as she dishes on her personal style, current projects and what she loves most about playing Maria Ruiz. As Art Basel Miami is around the corner starting in December we featured rising stars in the art world, as well as new dining spots emerging in Miami’s culinary scene. The dining landscape in NYC is hot as ever as we scoured the city to uncover the tastiest new seasonal menus and culinary experiences. One dinner party not to be missed is the mind blowing At the Illusionist’s Table which will challenge everything you thought you knew about reality. Held at the McKittrick Hotel for only 12 weeks, this beguiling show is truly a magical experience. With temperatures dropping as we head into winter, holiday travel is on our mind. This month we featured the exciting gastronomic scene in Colombia, hip Hollywood, Italy, Philadelphia, the sunny coastline of Mexico, and places to celebrate the holidays in NYC. In a season of giving thanks, fall brings a whirlwind of soirees and charitable events which are covered in glorious detail. Be thankful for what you have and remember to celebrate life! ICONS & INFLUENCERS
ANDY GOLDFARB on his newest invention “Photo Butler” By George Wayne
I
t is not often that you hear the words humble and tech titan to describe the same person. But then again Andy Goldfarb is no ordinary guy. As co-founder and Executive Managing Director of Globespan Capital Partners he is constantly on the go searching for new investment opportunities while evaluating and negotiating new investments. But this Boston-based
venture capitalist does it with such a sense of grace and integrity that is unrivaled in the shark-infested, dog-eat-dog world of the alpha male driven realm of technology. ‘’I believe the two greatest gifts you can give are love and laughter,’’ is very much his personal mantra and he exhibits that day in and day out. Already recognized by the influential
Forbes magazine as one of the Top 100 Dealmakers in the world, you would never know it after spending some time with this visionary because he never flouts all the usual characteristics associated with the typical big shot mogul. These days, the genius tech titan is focused on Photo Butler, his latest invention. Photo Butler is an app with which he intends to re-invent the social media
ICONS & INFLUENCERS
revolution. And he recently sat with the writer to talk up his newest baby. GEORGE WAYNE -Talk about the origins, the early ideas, notion, for this new App creation Photo Butler. ANDY GOLDFARB: I started Photo Butler because I believe the two greatest gifts you can give are love and laughter. GW - Which is a great mantra to have and support – the gift of love and laughter. But how is Photo Butler a game changer in the world of social media applications? AG – We are changing the way the world shares memories. GW - In what way? AG – We give you instant, automatic private photo sharing and there is no one else that can do this but Photo Butler. And so what we enable you to do is to set up a stream for an event and ‘’automagically’’ the photos are shown. So basically, it takes three seconds to take a smartphone photo and forty seconds to post it. And I believe that people are so busy texting and sharing that they are actually missing the real moment, so I want people to really absorb the moment, the memories wherever they may be with this App. Simply meaning that with Photo Butler the minute you take an image it is ‘’automagically’’ shared with your very select chosen group. So I want you to be able to share the memories and the love and the laughter and all the mundane moments free of distraction. So I want you to be able to share the memories and the connective essence without being distracted. Texting photos is so 2016. GW - So Photo Butler is the future. AG- Yes! What we have done is unique. So, for instance, say you are at a wedding where a hundred guests can take up to one thousand photos and all the guests have joined on to Photo Butler then document the event for a life time of memories. You download the Photo Butler and tap in the
given code and it’s as easy as that. One of the first huge events where we launched Photo Butler was the Pan Mass Challenge which is the largest athletic cancer charity event in the country. Over three days, 5,000 riders downloaded Photo Butler and were able to share their memories without the distraction of texting and posting. Once you do that — you will never again have to say text me a photo or can you take an image with my phone because all the images are shared amongst everyone. Being in the stream enables you to be fully present in ways like never before. And these images are only shared amongst all the people invited say to a wedding or maybe it’s a charity event weekend. It’s all shared ‘’auto-magically’.’ GW - And the launch was when? AG – We launched quietly in March and the broad launch was in New York this past Fashion Week. And we already have thousands of users. GW- And yet I will ask once again do we really need another App to crowd my Smartphone? AG – This is unique – as I said – because it is the only way to ‘’automagically’’ share photos to a vast controlled group and with immediate impact. There are a lot of other ways of sharing and they are all very manual. Photo Butler is unique for that one reason. Photos are not manually posted and it is far more seamless than any other App out there. GW - So it is event specific. AG – Yes, for the most part, but no event is too big or too small. It may be a dinner with three friends or it may be a beach party for three hundred. Whatever the event, this App allows you to truly enjoy the moment and collect the photo memories like never before. And so now the next effort is to work with bands and brands to better allow them to enable their audiences to have authentic user generated content. For instance, a band could use the Photo Butler
backstage behind the scenes and share with their fan base in that context. What is more, we also have unique algorithms that sort through each and every photo to make sure the quality is pitch perfect. We analyze almost two hundred pieces of data for every photo so that every image is as photo perfect as possible. Photo Butler also allows us to customize the algorithms to provide more featured content. So, for instance, for the Pan Mass Challenge users wanted to highlight finish line photos or celebration photos and we were able to adjust the algorithms to provide that featured content. At the end of the day there is no question that Photo Butler will help enhance your social media presence. GW - How did this idea come about ? Was it a brain storm session with a group of tech geeks over herbal tea? AG – No. The idea was actually mine. I came up with it. I have been doing this for twenty years and it comes from my heart. I have been documenting my family for twenty years and then it dawned on me that I needed to give everyone their own Photo Butler. It was my daughter Lucy who insisted I call it Photo Butler and so I bought the domain name. I then wrote the business plan and assembled the team to create it. I have investments in over 150 companies and I recruited the best minds from all those companies to help create Photo Butler. Seventy percent of the team I assembled have worked together before and this is what we have created. We built this App because we want to change the way the world shares memories. GW - And there is no doubt in my mind that you will Andy Goldfarb! GW completely and enthusiastically supports the notion that you are the coolest and smartest and nicest under-the-radar tech titan genius in America. And the world will come to know your name and acknowledge your particular genius and gifts to mankind in short order.

ISABELLE BSCHER GALERIE GMURZYNSKA
By Joe Alexander
Art Basel ussian avant-garde Galerie Gmurzynska, known for its museum quality and uniquely curated exhibitions, has hosted over 150 shows in its various premises and published over 100 art historical catalogues and catalogue raisonné in close collaboration with experts worldwide.

Jean Pigozzi, The Undisputed King of the Celebrity Selfie Glamorous gallerist Isabelle Bscher will be orchestrating her family’s booth at Miami’s Art Basel from (the private day starts December 6th) December 7th to 10th, where she will also host a party for artists and collectors during the fair on December 6th with the photographer Jean Pigozzi. Bscher is planning something special at her Galerie Gmurzynska saying “We always try to surprise people, to do something different, something interesting.” This year Galerie Gmurzynska will present Jean Pigozzi’s new dog series, Charles and Saatchi, at Art Basel. This is the second show that Isabelle has done with Pigozzi and they are set to publish a book about the series together with Damiani and a text written by Charles Saatchi. The new photo exhibition dedicated to the pups will be complemented by master works from Yves Klein, Roberto Matta, Robert Indiana and Joan Miro. Highlighted works at the booth include Yves Klein IKB 240 from 1995, Fernand Leger’s Composition à la feuille from 1931 and Miro’s Femme aux 3 cheveux, constellation from 1976. Isabelle always melds modern works with new ones at Basel to create a more dynamic booth. Woman-owned art world powerhouse Bscher, an art historian with a master’s degree from Sotheby’s, is the third generation to run the gallery, taking over from her mother and her grandmother, who founded it in 1965. The family built it into an art world powerhouse, representing Picasso, Donald Judd, Robert Indiana and James Turrell, as well as architects Zaha Hadid

and Richard Meier, actor/painter Sylvester Stallone, and designer/photographer Karl Lagerfeld. Art Expo Chicago Isabelle showed the work of her friend Christo at the Galerie Gmurzynska booth during the recent EXPO Chicago art fair where she also presented rare pieces by Joan Miró and Fernand Léger. These artists were each selected because they each have a strong connection to the Windy City. Miró had to struggle to find the funding to erect his now-iconic sculpture, “Miró’s Chicago” in the Loop back in 1981. A 1931 Léger piece that Bscher showed is significant because that year marked the artist’s first trip to America, including Chicago. “And Christo famously wrapped Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art in 1969.
A sensory experience Antonio Monfreda, who has created exhibitions for Valentino and Fendi, and was creative consultant for the Metropolitan Museum’s AngloMania exhibit, designed Galerie Gmurzynska’s Chicago booth. “He thinks looking at art is something very intimate, so he wanted to create something that involves all senses,” says Bscher. He created curtains using special fabrics, with custom scents from Santa Maria Novella for a fully sensory experience with the master works. Future exhibitions Upcoming at the gallery’s four locations in Switzerland are exhibits on Alexander Rodchenko and Roberto Matta, and one on photographer Wayne Maser. gmurzynska.com

WHISBE: SCOPE MIAMI By Bennett Marcus
4 WTC. “It’s like, I did a mural project on the 69th floor, it’s super dope, I got to paint with my homies and had a great time,” WhIsBe says. Silverstein’s idea proved successful; in addition to giving young artists coveted space, the mural helped sell the property. Spotify, the music streaming service, rented the space after seeing the art installation. Lobby Sculpture Negotiations for the lobby sculpture followed WhIsBe acted as his own agent, and the process taught him a lot about public installations and corporate politics. “All of that transpired through the mural project on the 69th floor, through working with Silverstein Properties, and Silverstein himself,” says the 29-year-old. He is the only artist from the original mural group to have an additional piece in the building.

“What Is Beauty?” COPE Miami Beach returns to Ocean Drive for its 17th installment. The art fair will begin with a VIP Preview on December 5th and run through December 10th. This year SCOPE will feature 140 exhibitors from 25 countries and 60 cities, one of whom will be notorious street artists WhIsBe. He plans to bring several of his 7-foot Gummy Bear sculptures to the fair. “I’d like to have those there because I see the impact that they have as public art installations.” This year fair sponsors include artnet, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami and the Perez Art Museum Miami.

It’s so wild,” says the artist, who is known as WhIsBe - for “What Is Beauty?” “I would have never thought I’d have a sculpture in the lobby of the World Trade Center if you had asked me a few years ago,” he adds. Since the installation, he’s been written up in Forbes, WWD and Business Insider, and was the subject of a video by Vice News. The New Museum “The opportunity at the World Trade Center, and what’s come from that just spiked my career in terms of momentum.” A New York native, WhIsBe notes that just having the opportunity to paint in the World Trade Center is incredible. WhIsBe grew up painting, studied at the School of Visual arts, and after a hiatus, turned to street art five years ago. He has now exhibited at art fairs including Art Basel, Art New York, and Art Southampton, had an installation at the New Museum, and his work is now in the collection of MOCO Museum Amsterdam. ANDREW RIGIE
NYC Hospitality Alliance Executive Director
T
he NYC Hospitality Alliance is a broadbased membership association founded in 2012 to foster the growth and vitality of the industry that has made New York City the Hospitality Capital of the World. It is the first association ever formed in New York City representing all facets of this diverse industry: restaurants, bars, lounges, destination hotels and major industry suppliers. The Alliance is committed to advancing, with a clear and unified voice, an agenda focused on opportunity, economic investment and job creation. The Alliance supports pro-growth public policy, encourages investment in and promotion of NYC’s hospitality industry and evaluates the development, implementation and fairness of relevant government regulations. By providing education and training, access to expert consultants and opportunities to collaborate and exchange ideas, The Alliance helps ensure that its members have the necessary tools to grow and prosper and continue to offer the world-class quality of service. The NYC Hospitality Alliance Executive Director Andrew Rigie explains, “The NYC hospitality industry is vital to the local economy and social fabric of our city. Historically, hospitality business owners in the five boroughs didn’t have their own citywide association to serve and represent them. So that’s what we set out to do, form an organization to make sure they are treated fairly by governemnt so they can continue to employ people, pay taxes, open great restauarants and bars, and make money.”
30 | resident.com
He continues, “The industry is always changing. The best place to be successful is in NYC, but it’s also the toughest place to suceed. High rents, intense competiton, and the new and ever changing laws and regulations make it very difficult to stay in business and be successful. When restaurants and bars open in neighborhoods, business owners often feel like they’re under attack. It’s our job to be their advocate. This industry is vital to our city and these business owners need and deserve
to have a strong voice representing them in the halls of governent. The Allliance also helps our members stay informed of trends, laws and regulations. We provide education and training to make sure they stay on top of their game. The nature of the industry is working nights, weekends and holidays which often prevents them from networking. So we host events and forums where people can come together, talk about the industry and have fun. Additionally, they can learn from each other and even open new businesses together. We foster a community among hospitality industry professionls.” The Alliance has about 2,000 members throughout the five boroughs which range from a neighborhood pub to a large nightclub, a pizzeria to a four star restaurant and everything in between. The Alliance’s Board of Directors include individuals from The Tao Group, Rosa Mexicana, Soho House, The Standard Hotels, Fun Bars and more. Members of the Hospitality Alliance are able attend courses on food safety, business technology as well as fun events like the NYC Hospitality Alliance Awards that recognize individuals in the industry for their achievements and successes. The next restaurant roundtable series event on October 19th will focus on how to choose the right financing for your business. They also hold Quarterly cocktail parties to help business owners network and get to know each other. To become a member: thenycalliance.org/membership. thenycalliance.org

COMEDIAN FELICIA MADISON Life In NYC is a Laughing Affair By Lillian Langtry
C
omedian Felicia Madison draws on her experiences as a stay-at-home mom in affluent Manhattan as the basis for her observational comedy, poking fun at marriage, parenthood, and life in general. Felicia had a childhood dream of becoming a Broadway dancer. Her parents had other plans ...which is why she was pre-med in college! A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a major in the biological basis of behavior and a minor in marketing (she jokes that she’s only qualified to sell drugs), Felicia decided to try her hand at comedy after a class at the Manhattan Comedy School. She also blogs, podcasts, and is currently writing a screenplay. She can be found

performing stand-up throughout New York City. In 2016, Felicia launched Laughing Affairs, which produces daytime and evening comedy shows for social events such as birthdays, showers, and corporate and fundraising events. A production of Laughing Affairs is Laughercise. Laughercise eschews the traditional late night environs of comedy clubs, instead treating guests to a one course meal, dessert, and glass of wine in the afternoon as both up-and-coming and veteran comedians take to the stage. Laughercise’s times and locations are perfect for comedy fans seeking laughs outside of the traditional late night, maledominated clubs.
One of Felicia’s and Laughing Affairs latest projects is Comedy for a Cause, where Felicia and other comics come together to raise money for a foundation, charity, or benefit, with all proceeds going to the cause. The format “enables me to perform during the day, when I am completely free, and in front of ‘my’ audience. The lunches have been a huge success for both the moms and the comedians,” Felicia told Broadway World. N
ow in its fifth season, “Orange is the New Black” has gone from having a cult following to being a force of nature. Never afraid to take on issues that while “uncomfortable” to watch, are the necessary topics of conversation to bring about social change. In her role as Maria Ruiz, Jessica Pimentel has become a pivotal character and Season Five regular. If life does in fact reflect art, Jessica is a beautiful image of her character. Fiery and fiercely loyal, both women have an inner fortitude and moral compass that keeps them focused on a goal and driven by selfdiscovery and the unwavering belief that hope must never be lost even in the face of great adversity.
Joshua Estrin: When we spoke last summer, you were poised to take over the world and with an expanded and integral role in Season 5 of Orange is the New Black. What do you do to take awareness and turn it into action? Jessica Pimentel: So much of who I am is reflected in my decision to be a Buddhist. A great deal of how I approach life on both the professional and personal fronts manifests from the Buddhist teachings. Visualization, self-awareness, and an overall willingness to be open to taking a path that, at first might not seem to be the one that I had planned, have all been keys to the success. Equally important, and not always easy, is a willingness to respect that things aren’t going to always go my way. For me, the focus is not on winning or losing, but rather on trusting that everything happens exactly as it should and is meant to move me closer to the person I need to become. This, in turn, moves me closer to the artist that I was also meant to be. JE: This season is intense. Did you do anything differently to prepare for your role as Maria Ruiz? JP: First and foremost, I am very grateful to have become a season regular. It is a huge compliment considering the talent of the cast and a commitment on the part of everyone involved to continue to create a show that is not only entertaining, but raises questions that are meant to spark important dialogues. But I’m not preparing for the role any differently, there is simply more to prepare for and, with no complaints, it simply means more time and more work. What some people might not realize, is that the vast majority of the cast receives the script week to week. So preparation is as intense as the storyline. From time to time there may be changes in the direction of the character that necessitate knowing things ahead of time. Until now, that hasn’t been my experience, and so from the moment I receive the script I dive in headfirst to make sure I continue to create and sustain Maria as the multi-dimensional woman she has always been. JE: We see more of Maria’s strength, but as the season progresses, she also reveals a very vulnerable side. Have audiences noticed and reacted to her maturation and self-awareness JP: Maria continues to show her strength this season, but she is evolving. She understands that strength can manifest in ways other than brute force. Without spoiling it for those who may not yet have seen the entire season, there is a scene between Maria and Gloria that I believe is very revealing. It explores

the very fine line between being selfish and selfless, and also lets audiences see into Maria’s fierce love and devotion for her daughter. One of the most exciting things about “Orange is the New Black” is how multi-leveled the individual characters are, and how that plays across the continuum of their interwoven lives. I believe audiences will notice a change. The change will be revealed in subtle shifts of Maria’s reactions or lack of reactions to situations that ultimately bring her closer to her singular goal, that of reuniting with her daughter. JE: Styled for the cover of Resident Magazine, you are playing a role and manifesting the vision of others. When it comes to your own personal sense of style and fashion, what are the “must haves” in your closet? JP: Style for me is about comfort and flexibility. I spend most of my time in New York City so fashion needs to be versatile. While it’s not a new concept, it’s important to me that everything I wear is able to go from day to night. I have a very active lifestyle, and while health and fitness are very important to me, I also like to feel like a woman or more specifically, tap into that part of me that enjoys feeling pretty.
Not because I’m supposed to look a certain way, but because I like to look a certain way and I need clothing that reflects that same sense and sensibility. JE: Your love of music and your band are something you have been very public about. How does performing on stage in a band differ from your onscreen work and in what ways does music fulfill you as an artist in ways that perhaps you don’t find in acting? JP: As an artist and a creative spirit, I understand that I’m part of an industry that often finds it necessary to try and label and compartmentalize people. “Actress”, “Singer”, “Performer”… that’s the business side. The personal and spiritual sides are again, a reflection of my Buddhist beliefs, as the sum of my creative parts includes my mind, body, and spirit. As a musician, my work simply plays out on a different stage than that as an actress, but it still reflects a common thread of compassion and a desire to humanize the world around me. I hope it reflects my belief that I am more than just a label or category. I’m Jessica, a person made up of many pieces and parts. Everything I do fulfills the unique aspects of what it is that makes me human and in
turn, connects me to the rest of the human race. JE: Tell me about some of your other projects JP: I am very excited for A Bread Factory directed by Patrick Wang and Vanishing Angle. It is a great script and a great cast with a somewhat unassuming storyline focused on a small town community arts center that has a wild and unexpected twist. I am thrilled to be part of the project and the grateful for the opportunity to work with Tyne Daly, James Marsters, Nana Visitor, Janeane Garofalo and Brian Murray. Expect the unexpected and enjoy the ride. This movie is something special.
If Jessica Pimentel had her own tagline, perhaps “expect the unexpected and enjoy the ride” would be the most accurate. She is a woman of conviction and compassion with a willingness to embrace the future as a daily work in progress. She is a woman of strength, yet she exudes a sense of peace and balance and she is never afraid to take the road less traveled.

The LG SIGNATURE Washing Machine, for example, has a premium 24-inch front load capability, yet still presents a clean and streamlined appearance. The unique pedestal TWINWash Mini, located under the main unit, enables users to wash two loads of laundry at the same time. With Google Home, owners can easily start the appliance, and check the time remaining during wash cycles. décor. The LG SIGNATURE Refrigerator represents the ultimate in functionality, appearance, and a refined sense of living with an innovative InstaView Door-in-Door feature that, with a simple knock, makes an opaque compartment transparent. No more standing in front of an open refrigerator, losing cold air, while wondering what there is to eat. Owners can use Google Home to check temperatures or “ask” the refrigerator to make more ice on command. As more homeowners become eco-conscious, air quality has moved to the forefront of a concerned and informed consumer. LG listened and responded with an exquisitely-designed SIGNATURE Air Purifier. With its innovative transparent panel, the air cleaning process can also be a beautiful visual experience. This unit harnesses the power of water to adjust humidity levels, while filtering out harmful contaminants and chemicals, within an impressive 300 square-foot radius.

Exquisite Interior Design Makeovers
By DLT INTERIORS/Debbie Travin By Tash Bazika

triving for a successful career is the ultimate goal in life. We all long for it, we spend our college years discovering it, fine tuning it and applying it. Be that as it may, sometimes life has a different path laid out for you. For Debbie Travin founder of DLT Interiors, her early career in the fashion industry led to the discovery of her passion for design and eye for detail in interior decorating. Emerging from her family’s background in fashion, where her grandfather started a high-end couture business, Debbie traveled to Italy on buying trips. From then on, her keen sense of style began

to grow and turned into a successful career. Moving to Scarsdale, with her husband Michael, brought upon the perfect opportunity to release her inner interior designer. They bought a home with a beautiful piece of property, which needed a lot of work—a complete gut renovation. It was a big project for Debbie, but she was determined to create her dream home. With no prior experience in interior design, Debbie dove in head first. After receiving positive feedback and media interest, this project became the spark that ignited a new and exciting career for Debbie. Following her passion, Debbie attended the New

York School of Interior Design where she continued to enhance her skills and knowledge of design. From then on, her interior design business was thriving with clients desiring her talent and style. For Debbie, her clients needs and wants are the number one priority. She strives to cater to her client’s design esthetic, personality and overall vibe. “It’s so rewarding to hear my clients say at the end of the project that their new home is exactly what they wanted but far superior to anything they envisioned “. Inspired by her travels around the world, Debbie
Her recent project dubbed the classic six-renovation design project involves the complete renovation and interior design of a young family apartment on Park Avenue on the Upper East Side. Warm tones of taupes, greens with gold accents became the feature of this project, evoking a natural feeling, with fresh elements and sophisticated style. Family orientation is also the main focus with this space, as Debbie transforms a formal dining room and reimagines it into a family play room, with upbeat colors for the kids but still keeping in touch with the sophistication element.
Her design style emits sophistication, classical style and appreciation for history. Debbie’s intuitive nature with colors, shapes and textures revitalize dull spaces into a vibrant eclectic territory. Her natural eye for recognizing the flaws of a space and the parallels that make the space allow her to reinvent any place, offering a fresh perspective and enabling present-day principles.
Debbie being a mother of three herself understands the importance of a romantic master bedroom, especially when you have two young kids. For the classic six-project, Debbie creates a peaceful, serene space, with a neutral color palette and soft tones. “The Schumacher linen/ silk damask curtain creates a very luxurious feel for the whole room. I added a modern trellis wallpaper for behind the custom headboard as an accent wall.”

FINE DINING
QUALITY BRANDED By Tash Bazika
Q
uality Branded is based upon a contemporary take on classic American dining, rooted in history, in style of cuisine, service, and décor. Whether referencing turn of the century butcher shops, 1950s Italian-American feasts, or the quotidian diners that dot the American landscape, Quality Branded restaurants reinterpret the quintessential American culinary experience through a modern lens. Quality Branded was established in 2007 by acclaimed father-son restaurateurs Michael and Alan Stillman, founders of TGI Friday’s and Smith & Wollensky. The duo became known as the “steak experts” having the proven track record to create and build new profitable steak concepts. Alan created Smith & Wollensky in the 70’s, which went on to become an internationally recognized brand. Michael then opened Quality Meats in 2006, which was named the top steakhouse in Manhattan in the 2014
Survey of New York City restaurants. Quality Meats was so popular that the group opened an Italian extension of the brand, Quality Italian around the corner in 2013 and a Quality Meats Miami Beach location in 2015. With a growing appetite for steak concepts, Michael Stillman was ready for something new and different and started to think about the approach from an aesthetic design and menu standpoint. The team noticed a lack of finecasual steakhouses and the idea for Quality Eats was born. Quality Eats created a new type of steak restaurant, designed for everyday, neighborhood dining that presented new ways to eat beef by offering creative preparations of “off cuts” different from what you would encounter in a traditional steakhouse. With great success in the West Village, the restaurant has since expanded to the Upper East Side, with a third location opening this winter in NoMad.
“Quality Eats has resonated with the downtown crowd and we are thrilled to expand to locations that make our vision of inventive neighborhood dining available to more New Yorkers,” said Michael Stillman, President and Founder of Quality Branded. “Like every true neighborhood favorite, Quality Eats is an extension of its community and will offer crowd-pleasing, risk-taking, fun, and wholly-satisfying food.” The group is comprised of upscale restaurants in New York City, Miami Beach and Denver, including Quality Meats (New York, Miami Beach), Quality Italian (New York, Denver), and Quality Eats (West Village, Upper East Side, NoMad coming this winter). Their extraordinary depth of experience, combined with a fresh new vision for design, hospitality and cuisine, uniquely positions these concepts from Quality Branded for success. qualitybranded.com

GALLAGHERS STEAKHOUSE IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK By Melissa Kassis
M
ention Gallaghers to any native New Yorker and you’re bound to hear a personal connection to this classic Manhattan steakhouse, one of the most .. storied restaurants in city’s history. Born a clandestine speakeasy in 1927, Gallaghers has been the oasis of Broadway stars, sports icons and socialites for 90 years. It’s no wonder it is one of the city’s oldest and most successful restaurants. “The steakhouse is the quintessential New York restaurant,” food historian Ruth Reichl noted in explaining the city’s long love affair with USDA prime, dry-aged beef. “If you are a native New Yorker, steak is in your blood. Long before there were egg creams or Coney Island hot dogs, there were beefsteaks.1” Prime dry-aged steaks are what you’ll find when you stroll up to Gallaghers world-famous entrance. An unofficial Theater District landmark, it features a glass meat locker where the world’s finest steaks and chops take center stage. Day and night, Gallaghers’ cameraready meat locker is also where a pilgrimage of locals and visitors take selfies, memorializing one of the last remaining eyewitnesses to authentic New York history. room – with its inviting horseshoe-shaped bar, clubby wood-paneled walls and museum-quality photographs – and you’ll discover Manhattan’s most colorful personalities reveling in the “old school cool” vibe that only a true icon can deliver. In Gallaghers’ kitchen – the first in the city with an open format – you’ll spy acclaimed Chef Alan Ashkinaze firing the finest cuts over the steakhouse’s signature hickory coals. The first New York restaurant to serve the eponymous New York Strip, naturally Gallaghers is the darling of carnivores, who revel in choosing from an array of cuts, including porterhouses, sirloins and rib-eyes. I had the pleasure of dining at Gallagher’s and have to say that the staff and quality of food was top notch. The jumbo lump crab cake appetizer melted in your mouth as did the Burrata & Peppers. We ordered the strip steak which was cooked to perfection and the flavor was of the highest quality. Whether you like steak, fish, lamb chops, Gallagher’s has you covered. Just when you think you have had enough with appitizers main course and sides the desert menu comes along. I suggest the NY Cheesecake and the Crème Brulee. All in all, between the impeccable service and qual-
ity of the dishes it’s a must visit in NYC! Gallagher’s is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. One of the few Midtown restaurants that stays open until 11:30pm, Gallaghers is a natural for a post-theater supper. INSIDER’S TIP: Gallaghers’ $29 threecourse prix fixe lunch menu is the deal-of-thedecade.

veryday dishes made with respect for Southern Italian cultural traditions, absolute quality of ingredients, hospitality and outstanding service – that is the formula of New York’s favorite fine Italian dining destination: The Leopard at des Artistes. This Upper West Side hot spot, owned by husband-and-wife-team Gianfranco Sorrentino and Paula Bolla-Sorrentino, and partner Chef Vito Gnazzo, invites diners to enjoy exceptional food in a warm and inviting atmosphere. The Leopard’s décor, which features famed Howard Chandler Christy murals in the dining room, is inspired by the elegance of the 1963 epic film of the same name. Chef Vito’s culinary signature of authentic Southern Italian comfort food is the draw for visitors and locals alike to the restaurant. The Leopard boasts a diverse menu that finds its roots in the area once known as The Kingdom of Two Sicilies of the mid-1800s, and the culinary traditions of Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, Apulia, Sardinia, and of course, Sicily. The menu also features dishes traditionally found in regions outside of Southern Italy, such as Lazio and Umbria. The restaurant continues to attract a wide array of celebrities, including Steven Spielberg, Howard Stern, Stanley Tucci, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Hank Azaria, Steve Martin, William Ken-

The southern Italian-accented brunch dishes include Chef Vito’s “Uova all’arrabbiata Poached organic eggs with spicy tomato sauce and bread croutons, served in a skillet”, “Des Artistes eggs Benedict with Hollandaise sauce served with prosciutto San Daniele and herb roasted potatoes”, and his irresistible “Frittatina with porcini mushrooms and oven-roasted fingerling potatoes”. In addition, the “Beyond Brunch” menu features his beloved “Gnudi - Buffalo ricotta gnocchi, in butter and Parmigiano Reggiano sauce, with sage and organic asparagus”, and the “Ricotta and basil ravioli in butter, sage and Parmigiano Reggiano sauce”. The Leopard at des Artistes is a beloved neighborhood restaurant on a tree-lined block near Central Park that attracts guests from all over the world, and continues to be the place
to go for a discerning clientele seeking excellent food and wine. With the fully restored Howard Chandler Christy murals adorning its walls, a great mix of menus and programs the restaurant has a yet unmatched level of sophisticated hospitality and ambience. Rich in history, the landmarked mural series of “Fantasy Scenes with Naked Beauties”, by Howard Chandler Christy, were painted in the end of 1920s, and completed by 1935, when Christy lived in New York City and had his studio at the Hotel des Artistes. There are nine oil-on-canvas murals – some are mounted on wood, while others are directly on the wall. Wood Nymphs (Autumn), Tarzan and His Mate, Ponce De Leon, Bird and foliage (Small insert above Ponce De Leon), The Parrot Girl, Fountain of Youth, The Swing Girls, Birds and foliage (Small insert to the left of The Swing Girls), Wood Nymphs (Spring). The former Hotel Des Artistes was once a favorite haunt of iconic personalities as acclaimed dancer Isadora Duncan, famed playwright Noel Coward, and writer Fannie Hurst. djacent to Bryant Park lies an unexpected jewel of New York City, by the name of L’ADRESSE. L’ADRESSE opened its doors in late 2016 and quickly became a neighborhood favorite – similar to its parent company, Coffeemania, a successful restaurant group with 24 sites throughout Moscow. L’ADRESSE describes itself as one that provides a casual approach to Contemporary American cuisine, serving up seasonal fare by incorporating classic French techniques with hints of Asian influence. This restaurant offers an international feel in not only their food, but with their staff support as well; a good portion of their employees hail from around the globe. Its brunch menu offers items such as Duck and Waffles and a Lobster Uni Benedict, dishes that aren’t usual choices on any other brunch menu in the city. A highly recommended menu option is their truffle burger, made with a beef patty of sirloin beef and chuck, grilled to perfection on their world class Josper grill. The Josper grill is a special coal-burning grill that gives food

SALVATORE MARCELLO New Executive Chefat ..
MAMO Restaurant By Lillian Langtry
N
ew Executive Chef Salvatore Marcello has brought his culinary expertise to celebrity favorite, MAMO Restaurant. Originally from Naples, Italy, Salvatore was born into a family of cooks and bakers, igniting his passion for food at an early age. Since leaving home at the age of 13 to attend the Scuola Alberghiera in Formia, Lazio, Salvatore has experienced an illustrious career in some of Europe’s foremost kitchens; most recently as the Executive Chef at il Vero at the Grand Hotel Kempinski Geneva. His journey began at the Quisisana in Capri, as a summer job, and then to St. Moritz for another summer. After graduating from the Scuola Alberghiera, Salvatore returned to the Quisisana for the summer, and went further north in Italy, to work with Chef Massimo Spigaroli. This experience inspired Salvatore to step away from his comfort zone, and he began working for Rocco Forte hotels, first as a Chef de Partie in Frankfurt, then in Berlin.

looking for his perfect fit. It was upon meeting Mike Mammoliti and the MAMO team that he realized he had found his New York home, and a place to grow further and shine.
During his time at The Richemond, Salvatore met Michelin-starred chef Fulvio Pierangelini of the world-renowned Gambero Rosso. Mr. Pierangelini was seeking a right-hand man and was certain that Salvatore was the right man for the job. He took Salvatore under his wing, and the two traveled throughout Europe working through hotel openings, food and beverage transitions, and menu redesigns. After almost three years with Pierangelini, Salvatore missed having ‘his’ kitchen, and he returned to Geneva to open il Vero at the Grand Hotel Kempinski, as its Executive Chef.

NIZUC
A luxury resort in cancun By Lisa Loverro
N
IZUC Resort and Spa, which translates to “nose of the dog” in Mayan, is situated in the area located at one end of Cancun, Punta Nizuc, between the Caribbean Sea and Nichupté lagoon.
As one of the newest luxury resorts to open in the area, NIZUC stands out from the rest. It shines bright as a luxurious and sophisticated refuge, far different from the large hotels and party scene most often associated with Cancun. The architectural concept blends to the surrounding palette of earth tones, leaving the resorts natural habitat in the spotlight. The design and décor was developed in harmony with the surrounding vegetation and various shades of the blue sea. Each space transforms with varying light based on the time of day. The location of NIZUC provides unforgettable sunset views from the main pool, bar and most of the suites. The resort has over 250 suites and villas, nestled within peaceful and pristine landscaped grounds. Most of the rooms enjoy private plunge pools and outdoor living spaces, along with outdoor showers and view of the lush terrain. There are numerous outstanding restaurants at the resort ranging from sophisticated Mexican cuisine to traditional Peruvian dishes served at Ni. While sitting poolside, at the main infinity pool, enjoy delicious local cuisine including tacos and fresh guacamole, washed down with cold Mexican beers and exotic cocktails. In the evening, Havana Bar is a relaxing respite set along the resort’s reflecting ponds. With an array of books and unique Cuban decor, the cigar lounge features an extensive selection of rums and tequilas. Guest can relax while enjoying hand-rolled cigars as they sip on their favorite spirits into the night. Another perfect night awaits guests at Bar A’kan, the lively lobby bar, with meticulously designed and crafted wood ceilings, shutters, and carved wall art. Overhead, the stunning glass-cubed chandeliers sparkle and shine while guests lounge and enjoy ocean views and signature cocktails crafted by the resort’s lead mixologist. “Margarita IK ” is the drink to order here. The spa and fitness center were the highlight for me while visiting. The first ESPAbranded spa in the Mexican Caribbean, the spa offers a hydrotherapy circuit (offered to all guests receiving a spa treatment), including hot and cold tiled pools with massage jets along with steam and sauna. The spa menu offers all of the greatest hits you’re accustomed to receiving, along with Mayan inspired signature treatments such as the 120-minute Nizuc Renewal and Mayan Cacao. NIZUC Resort and Spa is designed as an experience for all its guests. A unique place in a unique environment, offering the perfect blend of relaxation and activities and a large dose of luxury, surrounded by tropical breezes. nizuc.com

ere minutes away from the port of Mykonos lies Myconican Kyma—a Myconinan Collection property located in the heart of the enchanting Grecian Island of Mykonos. The intriguing Kyma is set back from the road on a small hilltop, overlooking the iconic Alefkandra windmills, adjacent to its sister properties: the Myconian Korali and Myconia Naia. Today, this family-owned collection of hotels is run by Marios Daktylides, who continues his parents’ tradition of maintaining luxury, five-star boutiques throughout this idyllic island. The Kyma, which means “wave” in Greek, is one of the latest outposts for this hotel collection. It is elegantly decorated in true Grecian fashion with bright white lights and blue colors throughout the property. Many of the rooms are adorned with their own private pools overlooking the stunning blue water. The suites at the Kyma are elegance personified. This property offers two types of suites—some having King or Twin beds including rain showers, private pools and Jacuzzis. The Kyma particularly, out of all of the other properties in the sprawling collection, is known for being a design hotel— a point that is made clear in every elegant line, painting, or fixture strewn throughout this unique property. Guests dine for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Americanstyle steakhouse on property that prides itself on its fine grilled meat selection. This particular menu, along with the other restaurants on the overall property, contains items with the highest quality of ingredients that are locally sourced. Dinner selections include lighter bites like the tuna tartare with citrus yuzu and a tasty fresh green salad. Larger entrees include the crispy pork belly or the signature ribeye steak cooked on the outdoor grill on property. At the helm of the beverage program for the three properties is Irina Marouli. At the Kyma, visitors will find George’s Bar which serves guests from dusk till dawn. In the morning, the bar offers all of the coffee classics, such as traditional Greek coffee to latte macchiato and the refreshing cappuccino freddo; as well as juices and refreshments. As the day progresses, so does the menu, where cocktails become front and center. If you’re dining in the steakhouse, you might very well be welcomed with a specialty cocktail such as the Aperol spritz, among others, that Marouli and her staff have concocted to please their thirsty guests. Next door at the Korali, lies the Mediterranean restaurant that serves traditional Greek cuisine ranging from Horatiki salad to grilled octopus to a dish comprised of quinoa, salmon, cucumbers and dill. Adjacent to the Korali is the Naia property, which is best
known for its Sunset Cocktail Party that goes on every night from 7-9pm. A sweeping, inventive cocktail menu is offered in its open air patio, where hotel guests can relax, sip and take in one of the most breathtaking sunsets over the mystical Aegean Sea. The Naia’s restaurant is Italian-themed, with tables and chairs lining its beautiful pool. The menu showcases items such as the sea bass carpaccio with seaweed salad and the sea bass with spinach and cannellini beans. Connecting the Kyma, and its sister properties, the Korali and Naia, resides the luxurious Satori Thalasso Spa. The spa offers a variety of treatments including traditional massages, treatments and couples treatments. At the heart of its spa’s menu is their offering known as Thalassotherapy. This particular treatment takes guests through a series of five therapeutic pools before ending up in a sauna. This is meant to help benefit people with such ailments as painful joints, back problems, arthritis, osteoporosis and water retention. No matter if the objective of a vacation is to relax, to dine on international delicacies, or to indulge in total luxury, the Myconican Collection including the Kyma, Korali and Naia contain every aspect of many different indulgences that could create an amazing, personalized experience.

hey say “Paris is always a good idea” and actually it is…but we could say the same about the most important Italian cities, and the Holiday Season offers even more reasons to jump on a plane to light the Christmas tree in a luxurious hotel suite. Milan has always been the “capital of fashion” and the shopping in the iconic “quadrilatero” remains unrivalled. But if you’re looking for a different perspective, RomaSì can bring you to the real heart of the city, comprised of independent artisan shops, art galleries and typical “trattorias” to enjoy the real Milanese, a simple yet unforgettable gastronomic experience. During the Holidays, don’t miss the renowned exhibit, “Dentro Caravaggio” at Palazzo Reale in Milan from 29.09.2017 to 28.1.2018. Through recent investigations which unearthed new documents, this exhibit explores a new perspective on Caravaggio’s vast body of work. For the first time, 18 of Caravaggio’s most important works are shown together and analysed by respective radiographic images enabling the audience to follow and discover the artist’s journey from his initial thoughts to the final masterpiece. Venice is the grand dame of the arts whose allure has inspired some of the most important writers and poets to create their work. During the holidays it’s beauty comes to life when the calle (the Venetian word for streets) are even more beautiful, the Grand Canal sparkles with dazzling lights and the bacari (the Venetian word for tavern) offers a joyous spot to drink and to live like the locals.

In India, every gem has its own meaning whether it invokes a cosmic purpose or suggests the rank, caste, region of birth, marital status or wealth of the wearer. The Venice exhibition is an incredible journey into the universe of Indian jewellery from the 16th century to the present day. The route is marked by the milestones of this art, which has never ceased to amaze and fascinate Western minds, and arouses their curiosity with images of jewel-bedecked royals and gods. It is a spectacular trip through five centuries of remarkably refined artistic taste and perfected technique, represented by historic Indian diamonds and legendary jewels. The Renaissance gem, Florence, this year is paying tribute to its glorious past with an amazing pair of exhibitions at Palazzo Strozzi. Elizabeth McGovern Shines in
“TIME AND THE CONWAYS” By Barry Bassis
B
ob Dylan wrote “For the loser now/ Will be later to win/ For the times they are a-changin.’” This is one of the points that J.B. Priestley made in his 1937 play, ““Time and the Conways,” now being revived by Roundabout Theatre Company. The production looks splendid and benefits from the lead performance by Elizabeth McGovern as the matriarch of the family. The Conways are an English upper class family, a mother and her six children. The first scene takes place in 1919, in the giddy aftermath of World War I. The father has died (although not from the War but in a drowning) and the two sons have returned from the army unscathed. The older brother Alan (Gabriel Ebert) is an ordinary clerk with no higher ambitions, while his younger sibling, Robin (Matthew James Thomas), is a golden boy who predicts a dazzling future for himself. The four daughters are a varied crew, gathered to celebrate the 21st birthday of Kay (Charlotte Parry), who intends to become a novelist. Madge (Brooke Bloom) has a social conscience,
which seems at odds with the frivolous family playing charades (or “sha-rahds” as they pronounce it). Hazel (Anna Camp) just wants to meet Mr. Right and lead a fashionable life in London. Carol (Anna Baryshnikov), the youngest, has her life before her (at least at the beginning). There is a lowly businessman, Ernest Beevers (Steven Boyer), obsessively (and seemingly hopelessly) pursuing Hazel. Meanwhile, Joan Helford (Cara Ricketts) lusts after Robin while Alan pines for her. The play then jumps 20 years, to 1937 (when the world was headed into World War II). One of the daughters has died of an illness and the family has fallen on hard times. Sunny futures have not panned out and Alan (who still labors at the same dull job) seems the best adjusted of the lot. The marriages that took place after the action in Act I are not what the characters expected. As Mrs. Conway, Elizabeth McGovern exudes charm until she unleashes her pentup rage. In fact, the actress makes some of her character’s outrageous remarks to her children more palatable than Priestley probably intended. She is a little like an
English Amanda Wingfield (from “The Glass Menagerie”) except that Mrs. Conway is still the belle of the ball. If you enjoy McGovern in PBS’s “Downton Abbey,” you will relish her live performance as much. Gabriel Ebert (playing Alan) also gives an unusual and thoughtful performance. The actor bears a resemblance to Huntz Hall and even adopts some of his hand gestures. At the same time, he has the most philosophical lines of dialogue. The play’s weakness is its overlength, returning in the last act to 1919 to overemphasize the point that most of the characters experience a reversal of fortune. Nevertheless, the cast excels under Rebecca Taichman’s astute direction and there are praiseworthy contributions by Neil Patel (set), Christopher Akerlind (lighting), and Matt Hubbs (sound). “Time and the Conways” is running at the American Airlines Theatre until November 26th 227 West 42nd Street 212-719-1300 roundabouttheatre.org

THANKS GIVING & YANKEE FEVER By Jane Pontarelli
T
his month I feature Ami Schrager and her delicious fur babies. Ami grew up surrounded by dogs and at one point had seven at the same time. I know it’s crazy but as she explains, with lots of work and dedication, it’s a walk in the Park. Besides all the love in return, makes it so worth while. Eventually Ami grew up and after Law School she embarked on her Law career for several years, but it was not enough. Enter her passion for photography and a great photographer she is, well not enough, then came the development field. But something was still lacking. She yearned for her youth as many of us do. Back to the love of animals. Enter, The Duke of Buttercup (affectionately known as Buttercup or BC.) Buttercup was born in Ireland and is a White West Highland Terrier. She got this tenacious terrier in December 2009, Ami was in love with her BC. Buttercup who is a trained therapy dog, which is a lot of work but well worth it. In life sometimes one is not enough, enter rescue toy poodle named Lukas. Lukas was a poodle stud for 5 years and was abused, neglected and not loved. He was rescued by Best Friends Animal Society, “Pup My Ride” brought him East and turned him over to Yorkie 911 Rescue. Initially, Ami was only going to foster him until he found his forever home. But when it was time for Lukas to go, Ami could not bear to turn him over, she cried her heart out and had to have him. She knew then that he would complete her fur family. Ami currently works in the customer service field so she can spend more time with the boys, going to events, working for rescue organizations and watching the Yankees. They volunteer with Yorkie 911 Rescue mostly doing home visits. The three of them are true party animals who host events in there beautiful apartment, which happens to have a terrace which comes in handy. Ami and her boys host The Pup-

It’s a wonderful evening, as we all bring something to celebrate and we have a barking good time. Remember be an Ami, be a Jane rescue, it will change your life forever and the better.
