A TIME TO REFLECT

Makeup and hair courtesy of Bestsyelisa.com • NYC’s At Home Hair & Makeup Glam Squad

Growing up in San Francisco, I never really got to experience the changing seasons. Just like a rite of passage, this transition period also reflects the evolution of our consciousness moving from the carefree days of summer to reflecting on harvesting the bounties and provisions we’ve been afforded while counting our blessings and recounting our joys. As one of the most beautiful seasons in the Northeast, the fire glow leaves of changing foliage is simply magical with plenty of reasons to go out and explore the world! On the heels of New York fashion week we had a chance to see the hottest fashion and beauty looks for next spring, with plenty of options to look forward to. Trends ranged from chic off the shoulder silhouettes to statement chokers and bold golden accessories and accents. Beauty was kept fairly simple with white eyeliner, natural lips and flawless almost naked skin. To showcase the bold and modern silhouettes of fall fashion, we chose the stunning modern architectural masterpiece in Sands Point that embodies the chic sensibility of this season with a racy red Mclaren sportscar thrown in as eye candy. This month we got to catch up with the effervescent Sarah Rafferty, one of our favorite stars on USA Network’s hit TV show SUITS as she discusses her love affair with New York City as well as her affinity to playing Donna Paulsen. We also featured up and comer Canadian actor Benjamin Hollingsworth who plays resident doctor Mario Savetti on the CBS medical drama Code Black. And our notable New Yorkers this month were Wellness Entrepreneur Dr. Mitchell Suss- a visionary in the health and wellness arena, along with the talented Toni Senecal, a television personality and host of ‘Toni On’ – a television travel series on WCBS. As October is a time of reflection, it’s also Breast Cancer Awareness Month as we featured products and services that benefit this important cause. October also welcomes in Spa Week- the biannual event where top spas around the country feature their most popular signature treatments for a fraction of the price, but be sure to book in advance as spots fill up quickly. As New Yorker’s are constantly on the hunt for great food, New York City has no shortage of that as we featured noteworthy openings, new seasonal menus, and some of our favorite haunts in the Big Apple and beyond. Autumn is always one of the best times to travel around the world and this month took us all over the globe. From weekend getaways to the Hudson Valley to catch the fall foliage to the exotic and sunny Caribbean. We also had a spotlight on the posh side of London as well as luxury cruising in the Mediterranean to the culturally rich regions of Sicily, Malta, and Greece. Enjoy the sheer pleasures of autumn and before you know it the holidays will be upon us!

ICONS INFLUENCERS &

MONICA WEBSTER

Why She is Not Taking NYC Residential Real Estate by Surprise

M

onica, prior to real estate, attended the New York School of Interior Design for graduate studies: which lead to being principal of her own design firm, formerly VP of Sales at for LaPerla, hosted a radio show called “Monica’s Style”, was lifestyle Editor at Large for “Scene and be Seen” for FCHome Magazine, etc. All this took place in the NYC! Although commuting from the suburbs, her core experiences took place

22 | resident.com

in the Big Apple. That is just one example that sets her apart from her peers. Born in Manila, and raised overseas, Monica’s family later settled in Buffalo, a region near where her ancestors founded Cornell University. Currently, Webster resides in both Greenwich, CT and the Upper East Side, which suits her clients evolving needs best. Greenwich, with its population of a

mere 60,000, is known as the Hedge Fund capital. With that said, locals frequent both NYC and Greenwich for freedom of lifestyle. Monica Webster has tremendous bragging rights with celebrities, musicians and artists to mention a few, she is experienced in: • Selling NYC co-op’s and condos for families yearning for a yard, more room and suburb lifestyle to raise their children. • Helping suburban couples find a pied a terre (studio) to purchase for weekend getaways in the city. • Assisting “empty nesters” that want to find convenience of lifestyle, purchase in NYC. • Post college students needing a rental in NYC. • Helping young families buy homes in Westchester, NY and Fairfield County, CT. Having an apartment in the city, when you live in the suburbs is colossal! No luggage, cold train schedule to follow, car service, hotel rules, etc….. Whatever your motivation, the key to finding the right apartment at the right price is an experienced realtor who can relate to where you are now, and where you want to be next. Your child cannot navigate their rental search alone. The 15% of the annual rent is due for the landlords broker fee no matter what, regardless if you have your own tenant representation. So be smart, select a tenant salesperson to help you, have your own representation! This way your salesperson gets 7.5%, and the landlord’s salesperson gets 7.5%, and you are protected. The Exclusive Right to Represent contract with the landlord has a fiduciary responsibility to the landlord. So don’t think for a minute that you are being represented and protected, if you go directly to a listing broker! You will need assistance with the tedious board application, what neighborhood would best suit you, your budget, whether you need a guarantor, etc. Right now it is a tenant market and there are tons of rentals to choose from. Monica’s NYC office is in the heart of Manhattan, 56th between Park and Lexington. She is EXCEPTIONAL because she can cross borders personally as she is a member of 4 Multiple Listing Services: OLR (Online Residential, which is all NYC), GMLS (Greenwich), CMLS (All of Fairfield County, CT), HGMLS (Hudson Gateway, all of Westchester Counties, NY). Currently, street.com, and msn.com, have looked to Monica for her recent expert opinion on NYC real estate. She can be reached at 203.952.5226.

On one of the thought provocative panels was Kay Koplovitz, Founder of USA Network who spoke with Jeff Skoll’s principal on impact investing and her efforts to support fellow women entrepreneurs. Hadi Al Alawi, Chairman of Al Hayat Group in Bahrain discussed family legacy issues, and how passing on values to your children is more important than handing down the wealth. Over lunch, moguls had the time to network over fresh Hamptons summer fare with a performance by pop singer Nicole Raviv. Families who have attended include some of the leading names in America including the Firestones, Ford’s, Rockefeller’s, Kennedy’s, Bronfman’s, Kettering’s, Hunt’s, Pitcarin, Getty’s, Dean Witter heirs & entrepreneurs such as Musk who co-founded Paypal, along with international magnates including the Mittal family from India and Pears families from Europe. With only 200 people in attendance, the 1640 Society keeps the Forum ultra exclusive with all attendees going thru a rigorous approval process by the Steering Committee with voting akin to the old money country clubs. This is the one weekend out of the summer causing traffic jams in Westhampton airport with over 30 private air craft flying in just for this exclusive and highly anticipated event that only happens once a year.

ICONS & INFLUENCERS

TONY COINTREAU A GIFT OF LOVE Lessons Learned From My Work and Friendship With Mother Teresa By Bennett Marcus

SAINT TERESA

Tony Cointreau could never say no when his friend, Mother Teresa, asked him to sing for her. Likewise, when Cointreau asked Mother Teresa for help in writing “A Gift of Love - Lessons Learned From My Work and Friendship with Mother Teresa” his book about caring for loved ones in their last days, she never said no, despite the fact that she died in 1997.“I said, ‘Mother, please help me,’ and I felt this presence over my right shoulder,” Cointreau explained. “And after about two or three hours of writing I looked at what I had written and I thought, holy moly!” Mother Teresa came to him and helped him with the book. “She was no longer here with us on the earth plane, but she was with me and I feel very protected,” he added.

WORK IN CALCUTTA & NYC

The two got to know each other when Cointreau, moved to act after seeing a magazine photo of Mother Teresa carrying a dying man, got involved in the late nun’s works. He worked with her in Calcutta, and in New York City during the height of the AIDS crisis, caring for dying patients at a hospice Mother Teresa opened called “Gift of Love.” In his book, Cointreau teaches us what he learned by helping these AIDS patients, who were friendless and shunned by family. There are simple ways to make someone’s last days peaceful, and to ease their

30 | resident.com

fears. “Simple things like listening, touch, choices, humor, non-judgment, respect, music, and of course unconditional love which is the most powerful force in the world.” He would sing quietly to the patients, which he found to be very powerful. “You cannot imagine the change that came over these people, the fear was gone from their faces, and the pain seemed to be gone,” he says.

AIDS PATIENTS

Today, instead of dying at home, the sick and elderly are shuttled off to institutions, and often forgotten. “Visiting them, at least being there for them, that is very, very simple.” About caring for AIDS patients in those early days, Cointreau says that Mother Teresa was asked hundreds of times what she thinks of AIDS patients, and hundreds of times she answered, “I judge no one.” “She lived it,” he adds.

BORN INTO PRIVILEGE

Devoting years of his life to helping the poor and sick may seem an odd choice for Cointreau, who was born into privilege to the family that produced orange-flavored French liqueur of the same name. As an adult, he became an internationally renowned singer, performing everywhere from Carnegie Hall to Las Vegas. After catching his show in New York, fashion designer Pierre Cardin launched him in

Europe, arranging for Cointreau to sing at Maxim’s in Paris. But Cointreau’s life was not always happy. As a child, he was a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of a teacher, something he didn’t reveal for 40 years, during which he suffered from panic attacks. And there were improbable coincidences in his life, notably becoming a close confidante of Ethel Merman. He documented this in a previous book, a memoir, “Ethel Merman, Mother Teresa… and Me.”

THE POPE

And Mother Teresa is still helping him with the new book, even now that it’s done. “A couple of months ago when we knew we were putting the book out on September 6, I talked to Mother, as I am want to do, and I said, ‘Mother, what can we do to give this book a boost?’ And the next day the Pope announced that Mother was going to be canonized on the 5th of September,” Cointreau says. “A couple of weeks later I was talking to Mother again - we have chats - and I said, ‘Mother, what could we do to make it even a little more meaningful?’ And the next day the Pope came out and said she was going to be canonized on the 4th of September [instead], which is my birth mother’s birthday.” Mysterious ways, indeed. tonycointreau.com

ICONS & INFLUENCERS

NANCY CHEMTOB High Powered Divorce Lawyer By Bennett Marcus

CHEMTOB, MOSS, & FORMAN

At Nancy Chemtob’s office, they don’t refer to their clients by name, ever. Every client has a nickname that the entire staff uses, and that’s not just for high profile cases like, Michael Douglas’s ex-wife Diandra Douglas, Tory Burch or Star Jones, whose divorces Chemtob handled. Her firm, Chemtob, Moss & Forman, is one of the top matrimonial and family law firms in New York, and confidentiality is paramount. “To me confidentiality is the absolute most important thing,” says Chemtob. “It’s probably the most important part of my business.” Although her clients have included Bobby Flay’s ex-wife Stephanie March, Tiki Barber’s wife, and Matt Lauer’s wife Annette Lauer, this rule extends to every case. “I have a client who’s a hedge fund owner, we call him the tall man,” she says. For very confidential matters, like high profile prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, which are not subject to public filings, the files are kept under lock and key, and only two of the firm’s partners have access.

GROUND BREAKING CUSTODY CASE

A landmark New York Court of Appeals decision created an important new law recognizing the custody rights of adults who are not biological or adoptive parents of a child but who should, based on their involvement in the child’s life, be recognized as a parent nonetheless. This decision has far-reaching implications for modern familial arrangements in NY, including LGBT couples that lacked legal marriage rights in NY when a child entered their relationship. Within days of this decision, Nancy Chemtob of Chemtob, Moss & Forman brought an action in Manhattan Supreme Court using this groundbreaking law to protect a client whose ex-partner was attempting to move abroad with the child they had been raising together. Ms. Chemtob successfully used the law to temporarily enjoin the counterparty from leaving the country with the child, and the matter is now scheduled for a trial, which will set an historic precedent in establishing the meaning of this law moving forward.

COMPLEX CUSTODY CASES

Chemtob’s clients often call her late at night and

32 | resident.com

on weekends, all the time, but it’s part of the job. “I have a client who called me at one in the morning, and three in the morning, and she was really in a bad situation. I wasn’t happy at all, but I just dealt with it,” says Chemtob. When there are issues with children, she explains, most of the time those fall on weekends or holidays. “Believe it or not we’re incredibly busy coming up to Thanksgiving or Christmas vacation.” Some cases that Chemtob has handled have been highly complex and significant in the legal world. In Assini vs. Assini, she successfully got a court to grant a father custody of his son without a hearing, thus changing the law. The mother had custody of the child, and there was a domestic incident via the stepfather, so Chemtob made an emergency application to transfer custody to the father. The law in New York at that time, 2004, required a trial or hearing for custody changes. “Ever since then the law has been if you go to court and you have compelling reasons to transfer custody, you can do so on an emergency basis,” she explains.

FIRST SAME SEX DIVORCE

Another groundbreaking case she handled was New York State’s first ever same-sex divorce, for a couple who married in Massachusetts but lived in New York - before same-sex marriage was recognized here. “New York State didn’t recognize same sex divorce, and they couldn’t go to Massachusetts because they weren’t residents,” she says. “I had to do all the research and work to determine whether or not New York State should recognize out-of-state divorce, and the judge ruled that they could. And that was the first same sex divorce in the state.” (New York State legalized same sex marriage in 2011.)

A FAMILY OF LAWYERS

Everyone in Chemtob’s family is a lawyer, so she followed that path, hoping to be a real estate attorney. When she graduated law school in 1990, the real

estate market had crashed, so there was a brief stint doing employment law, which she did not enjoy. But she kept hearing more about divorce and matrimonial law, and found it intriguing. “It’s an incredibly competitive area of law and there are very few firms that specialize in it and do it well.” She opened her own office, and today the firm has twelve attorneys and a support staff of 25.

MT. SINAI HOSPITAL’S CHILD LIFE PROGRAM

Outside of work, Chemtob loves food and travel, and is active in many charitable institutions, including Mt. Sinai Hospital’s Child Life Program, which helps women whose newborns are dealing with illness in the neonatal unit. That program is close to her heart because her own three children had serious conditions as newborns. “They’re fine now, but you don’t know they’re fine when they’re there,” she says. cmftlaw.com | 212-317-1717

BEHIND THE VELVET ROPE OCTOBER 2016

By Joe Alexander | With Photographs by Patrick McMullan

Kate Hudson,James Franco, Meryl Streep,& Mark Wahlberg Sausage Party stars James Franco, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, and Seth Rogan who said, “It’s our goal to turn children off of food; we thought, what if our food had feelings? And then we thought. It’d be super messed up because we eat our food and it would be a horrible existence for them. And that’s what birthed the movie Sausage Party.”... Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant soar in the exhilarating Florence Foster Jenkins. This movie about a rich and eccentric opera singer who couldn’t carry a tune will capture your heart. As she lay dying Jenkins said, “They may say I couldn’t sing, but they can’t say I didn’t sing.” Streep said “The great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy.” Hugh Grant plays a charming and subservient gigolo who ultimately comes to love his wife. Of his own life, he said “I particularly like the whole thing of being boss. It’s the slave quality that I find very alluring. “This film, which will make you laugh and cry, is a come back for Grant who could earn an Oscar nomination for this role... Hell or High Water is an outlaw movie in the vein of Matthew McConaughey’s TV series True Detective. Ben Foster, and Chris Pine play a pair of bank robbers chased by a sheriff played by Jeff Bridges. This modern twist on the cowboy genre is worth seeing if you have a spare two hours but I’d wait until it gets to Netflix... Mark Wahlberg leads the cast in Deepwater Horizon. This is a true story about an offshore drilling rig that explodes and creates the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Wahlberg’s co-star Kate Hudson muses “If it’s a huge hit, fantastic. If it’s not, then it’s not. I don’t worry about my work.” Time will tell. San Gennaro Festival Sopranos star Vincent Pastore and Karen King performed at the 90th Anniversary of the San Gennaro Festival at Cha Cha’s Café on Mulberry Street. Among those applauding were Sopranos actors Artie Pasquale, Al Sapienza, Dan Grimaldi, and Federico Castelluccio. The party honored King’s late husband Johnny “Cha Cha” Ciarcia, who was the “Un-Official Mayor of Little Italy.” King’s shop Alleva and Ferrara Bakery sponsored the meatball-eating contest. Over the years, the festival has attracted Robert DeNiro, Bill de Blasio and Andrew Cuomo. allevadairy.com Last Chance For Animals Animal advocates Leesa Rowland, Dara Sowell and Denis Erdman hosted a benefit for Last Chance for Animals (LCA) at Rosina’s restaurant. LCA president Chris DeRose spoke about the organization’s campaigns to raise awareness for animal welfare. The night ended with a moving PSA by Sopranos star Edie Falco about NYC’s carriage horses. lcanimal.org Joey Reynolds’ On Air Party Oprah Winfrey did a two-part TV series on broadcast personalities that featured legendary radio host Joey Reynolds, who has returned to WABC radio. microneedled into the skin. Microneedling is a hand-held device that has rows of extremely small needles which, when dragged across the skin, create temporary pores that can absorb the platelets. The patient is numbed with topical anesthetic which makes the procedure painless. Additionally, the platelets can be directly injected into the skin like a filler would be. This is called the “Vampire Lift.” When injected, platelets work more on a microscopic level of rebuilding the infrastructure of the skin. It’s a great means to volumize the skin for those patients more wary of using hyaluronic acid products. One of the great benefits of the Vampire Facial is that it is colorblind, meaning it can be done in any skin type. Additionally, microneedling is a fantastic way to resurface the skin and will also treat acne, acne scars, melasma, fine line, and wrinkles.” With no down time and just slight redness over the next two days, followed by slight dryness and flakiness, the results are immediate and continue to improve. It’s an excellent way to remain freshfaced and glowing for weeks. skinfluencenyc.com

Dr. Linkner explains, “ One of the newest treatment modalities that is gaining momentum for facial rejuvenation is microneedling with platelet rich plasma, also known as the the “Vampire Facial.” A small amount of blood is drawn from the patient and then spun in a high-speed centrifuge to isolate the platelet cells from the patient’s blood. Scientific studies have shown that platelet have impressive anti-aging capacities, which include building collagen and elastin, that can be monopolized when the platelets are

Rebuilding a smile with

DENTAL IMPLANTS By Dr. Sol Schwartzstein

U

nless you’re preparing for a movie role as a pirate, missing or broken teeth are never glamorous. A damaged smile can also impede self-esteem, while a great smile can lead to great confidence. One of my goals as a dentist is to help people achieve that confidence. When teeth are healthy, cosmetic options for whitening and straightening are widely available, while veneers will sometimes be the best option. There are some patients that will need more help to get there than others, and that’s where dental implants can make all the difference. Dental implants are a great way to improve a smile and the overall functionality of your teeth. Implants offer a permanent solution and are widely popular and successful. They are the optimal choice for replacing missing teeth since they look, feel and function like natural teeth and can be used to replace a solitary tooth, several teeth or even an

entire mouthful. Implant procedures are routinely performed on adult patients of all ages, thereby avoiding the need for traditional bridges or dentures - and the dreaded teeth in a glass. I always begin with a comprehensive patient evaluation and treatment plan. Our top priority at Central Park South Dental is that our patients are comfortable and confident in their decisions. If implants are indeed determined to be the best route, the first step is to get a full 3D view of the area of concern. Most people are candidates for immediate implant treatment with immediate results. With the procedure done under anesthesia, patients can often go to sleep and wake up with new set of teeth. Treatment begins with tiny titanium posts being placed where teeth are missing. A connector, called an abutment, is then placed on top of the implant to connect it to the replacement tooth. Finally, a new crown is

positioned on the implant, restoring function and beauty to the patient’s smile. Having a practice in the heart of New York City, I recognize that people expect not only expert care but also comfort and convenience. We have performed thousands of implant procedures at Central Park South Dental and our patients know that they can be in and out of the dental chair and back to their lives quickly. We offer evening and weekend appointments to accommodate our patients’ busy schedules, with VIP concierge-style services available as well. Everyone deserves to have the best smile they possibly can - whether for an important meeting, a photo shoot or a family celebration - or even your very first venture on Tinder or J-Date. Missing, broken or weak teeth can have health and cosmetic repercussions -- and can also be a real confidence killer. Nothing brings me more satisfaction than when I see my patient with their new smile and the newfound confidence they display after treatment! Q&A WITH

integrative perspective and it became clear that the symptoms and physical changes women experience in relation to perimenopause and menopause are often distressing, and frequently have a negative impact on their quality of life.

WELLNESS ENTREPRENEUR CEO and founder of NY Health & Wellness

I ascertained there was a demand in the marketplace for natural supplements that would alleviate symptoms and deliver targeted micronutrients that a woman was no longer getting exclusively from her diet during menopause.

MITCH SUSS O

n a beautiful sunny summer morning in Scarsdale, NY, I had the opportunity to sit down with Mitch Suss, CEO and founder of NY Health & Wellness, to discuss his most current vision in his quest to improve the lives of menopausal women. Mitch is a man who truly believes in helping to maximize the health and lives of menopausal women through his company’s proprietary breakthrough metabolic weight loss program, Balance 3H Plus ®, and as an individual who sits on the cutting edge of almost everything he does. Over the past 20 years, Mitch has developed and partnered with some of the pioneers in the integrative wellness business, with past brands that include Bari RX, a bariatrics supplement line; Focus 28; Thinalicious; and Virility LIfe. His current and most successful supplement lines are MD UltraCeuticals and MD UltraDerm, an anti-aging and cosmetic line. Both are sold exclusively at the NYHW centers. Once again, Mitch’s ingenuity and entrepreneurship are shining bright, with the recent opening of NY Health & Wellness Hamptons. This deluxe new facility is a stunning reminder that there is always something greater we can do to provide better care for women who are suffering the painful discomfort of menopause, and to continue to support this population long-term. Mitch’s vision developed around meeting the documented, evidenced-based needs of women whose lives had changed due the persistent weight gain of menopause. Along this journey, Mitch hobnobbed with the most distinguished leaders of the wellness industry, including Dr. Robert Atkins, Dr. Patrick Fratellone, Dr. Fredrick J. Vagnini, and Dr. Arthur Davidson Jr, and has socialized with celebrities such as best-selling author Dr. Robi Ludwig, CBS star Toni Senecal, renowned celebrity blogger Stacy Gelsinger, award-winning talk show host Debbie Nigro, and Dani Mazzilli, wife of baseball legend Lee Mazzilli.

A top priority for Mitch was finding key physicians and industry experts in the field of women’s issues, to help develop protocols, products and solutions so that women can attain a better quality of life throughout all stages of menopause. Mitch, and his company NYHW, continue to set new standards of excellence in support of pre/ during/post menopausal women, through research, innovation, advanced technologies, and continued education. It was an honor and privilege to talk to this leader, who is making a difference and continues to raise the bar in improving the lives of every women experiencing menopause across the U.S. Mitch, please take a minute to tell us more about your background, how you became interested in the connection between hormones and menopause, and what inspired you to found NY Health & Wellness. M: Flashback to late Fall 2012. My daily practice was to attend lectures by leading weight loss specialists. That experience presented me with an early understanding of the drastic changes that a lot of women go through anatomically during menopause, and in particular, the weight gain women experience during their midlife. R: So how did you take this important issue and your ideas and turn it into a business reality? M: The facts I gleaned from the lectures really made an impression. There is so much misinformation about menopause, much of it coming from less informed practitioners, the press, and drug companies. This group of women needed help. It’s estimated that 6,000 American women enter menopause every day. It occurred to me that the most underserved area of medicine is the realm of menopause management, and I sensed a strong entrepreneurial opportunity. And inevitably, my natural inclination was to develop a system targeting this demographic. This is where the concept of NY Health & Wellness was first born. I continued my research on menopause from the

52 | resident.com

That was my admission ticket into the brave new world of health and wellness. It was at that moment I decided to move forward and open an integrative wellness center that focused on women’s health during menopause and specifically address the weight gain associated with menopause. R: It’s interesting to note that while women have been going through menopause forever, there haven’t been any breakthrough remedies or formulations geared towards the needs of this audience. M: I was shocked myself! I had discovered the power of hormones and how they affect every biological process in the body, especially during a women’s menopausal stage of life. So I surrounded myself with top doctors and assembled a team of experts who are leaders in their fields. Together, we studied the biological changes women’s bodies go through during this phase of life, and quickly learned that if certain hormones, specifically cortisol, leptin and ghrelin, often referred to as the hunger hormones, are out of balance, it can become impossible to lose weight. It was extremely important that my research and development team create protocols to address these issues. R: Mitch, science and literature supports your assertions in this area. Has NYHW identified a solution to this very troublesome issue that millions of women are experiencing? M: It would be bold of me to say we have developed a solution per se, but we have developed what I believe is a terrific, highly effective option. Our treatment program delivers a near-perfect solution for women who are having a difficult time coping during this phase of their lives. We developed Balance 3H Plus ®, a proprietary, science-based metabolic weight loss program that focuses on perimenopausal and menopausal weight gain. The foundation of the B3H+® program is an optimum combination of wholesome macronutrients to balance the hunger hormones that are often disrupted during the onset of menopause. We

NYFW 2016

STYLE & FASHION

Trending since the start of 2015, off the shoulder cuts are still immensely popular with designers offering a wider selection of blouses and luxe-looking dresses for the fall season. Mixing and meshing two biggest trends of the summer, Misha’s collection features jumpsuits with shoulder cut-outs and rompers with off the shoulder. Comebacks are huge in the fashion world. This season chokers and gold metallic have landed themselves on the forefront of fashion week. If chokers aren’t your favorite type of accessory, you could always choose to go for a thin scarf or a statement necklace. Just make you accessorize your neck. While gold might seem tacky to the naked eye, designers have made it a standout at this years’ fashion week. Whether it’s a black dress with a gold zipper or a dress decked in shimmer and glimmer, gold metallic is at the top of its game. Fashion is a never ending cycle of reusing old trends so don’t regret when you throw that knitted green sweater away thinking it’s outdated because you never know when it’ll become the “in” thing of the fall.

Sarah Raffert y The Consummate Sagittarian By Natalie Barclay

“I don’t play anything. I embody.”

O

r so says character Donna Paulsen about her own talents and skills, ‘embodied’ by actress Sarah Rafferty in the hit TV show Suits. Created in 2011, the show is set in the heart of the judiciary system and follows the story of a successful New York City law firm. Rafferty’s character may not be a lawyer, but as executive assistant to senior partner Harvey Specter, as well as queen of sass, Donna is anything but small. In fact, her largerthan-life personality and quick wittedness often steal the show, as well as create interesting relationships and dynamics between herself and the other leading characters. But who is Donna in real life? Or rather, who is the woman behind the mask? While Rafferty describes Donna as being “very brave in terms of how outspoken she is,” she doesn’t necessarily feel like this is something

that they share. “I don’t know a lot of actors who have that much self-confidence. It’s a tough business, so if you’re an actor, you’ve experienced some disappointment and you needed to persevere.” In some ways, playing Donna has given her a snapshot into what it would be like to be so bold and direct, all within the safety of playing and being someone else. In what world aside from Donna’s could she get away with saying things like, “I’m not apologizing for who I am, I’m too busy being a badass”? Though astrological signs are by no means scientific, Rafferty’s does a good job in describing her personality and interests: born on December 6th, Sarah Rafferty falls under the category of Sagittarius. A Sagittarius is usually characterized by their independence, their need to be free, their extroverted

resident.com | 67

nature, and their straightforwardness. Self-defined as being gregarious, friendly, yet also blunt, the connections are undeniable. Unlike Donna’s bluntness, which involves perfectly timed and phrased remarks, Rafferty’s bluntness is more of an openness or inability to hold back her thoughts. She also tends to prefer comfortable chic fashion to constraining or tightfitting clothing, a characteristic that can be linked to the Sagittarius need for freedom. Her personal style is different from what she wears in Suits, where Donna is usually seen wearing tight-fitting work dresses from the latest designers. “I choose dresses based on how they feel. I’m much happier in my boyfriend jeans and in Adidas. I have to be able to sit on a bike and move freely.” Just as Donna’s spunk has served as an outlet for Rafferty to act in a way she normally wouldn’t, Suits has introduced her to the “wearable art that is fashion.” Wearing Victoria Beckham and Louis Vuitton by day, and flowing bohemian dresses by night, you might say that Rafferty gets the best of both worlds. Starting in New York and then moving to Toronto, the show has exposed her to a whole array of local and international designers that satisfy both her character-driven and her Sagittarius/personal style. The show now being filmed in Toronto, Rafferty has discovered incredible local fashion talents and brands like Pink Tartan and Natalie Martin. Rafferty is not based solely in Toronto, but moves around a lot between New York, LA, and Toronto. Born in Connecticut just outside New York, New York City has special importance for her, calling it “her home in her heart.” Starting from when she was young, her parents would take her and her siblings into the city to see the latest Broadway shows and plays, a tradition that she continues with her own children (and even cast members!). From there she fell in love with the stage and the theater, pushing her to eventually attend drama

68 | resident.com

school and become an actress. “Even if you moved away like I did for work, you’re still a New Yorker in your heart. Forever.” Aside from Toronto, LA, and New York, Rafferty loves to travel around the world, another trait characteristic of a Sagittarius. As someone who always wants to try something new and outside her comfort zone, her choices of travel are different than most, whether it be Finland, Istanbul, or Bhutan. The one rule? The less the language is similar to English, the better. “You just sort of start to see things more clearly. You have to listen to the rhythm and to the music of what people are trying to say.” While not traveling, Rafferty is hard at work on the continuously successful Suits, which is now in its sixth season. Things having gotten very serious over the last few seasons, she is excited that this season brings the return of some of the old humor from past seasons, especially between Louis and Donna. Rafferty especially loves how the writers work to incorporate certain references to the actors’ real personalities and traits, often ironically. “I think it’s kind of funny that they mention Donna having wanted to be an actress. A couple seasons ago, she was in a Shakespeare play, and I’m a total theater geek in real life.” They also poked fun at Rick Hoffman, who plays Louis in the show, turning the sports-loving actor into a ballet buff. With every passing season, the quote “Donna: it’s like a name and a title, all in one” has remained true to the essence of Rafferty’s character. And, in some ways, it has remained true for Sarah Rafferty as well. Under the title of Donna, she found her breakout role, tapped into different parts of her own personality, and gained a second family, the cast of Suits. So while we can’t wait to see what’s in store for Donna this season and all those that fall, the real excitement is what it will mean for the heart and soul of the character: Sarah Rafferty.

BENJAMIN HOLLINGSWORTH THE OTHER McDREAMY By Haiting Tan Photography: @simonseezphotos Groomer: Brendan Robertson @ Solo Artists using Dior Homme Dermo System

T

iming is everything in life, it could be the difference between life or death or in our newest McDreamy’s case, it was almost a missed opportunity. While Ben Hollingsworth is famed for playing the dashing Doctor Mario Savetti on CBS critically acclaimed drama Code Black, he was a green card away from passing up his breakthrough role. Fortunately for the actor, his green card papers arrived on the morning the network was supposed to make a decision regarding his hiring. Hailing from Brockville, a small town in Ontario, Hollingsworth got his first taste of acting by starring in a High School play where he took on the challenge of playing a mentally challenged youth living in Toronto. It was then that he discovered his passion for acting. Instead of making a rash decision to move down to Hollywood, the actor wanted to learn the craft therefore enrolled at National Theatre School of Canada. Graduating in 2006, the actor became roommates with teen star Nina Dobrev in Toronto. While the brunette beauty shot to superstardom with the teen show “Vampire Diaries,” Hollingsworth broke into Hollywood by starring alongside Demi Moore and David Duchovny in “The Joneses.” Long forgotten for his role as Mike Jones, he now plays Doctor Mario Savetti a first-year resident struggling to stay afloat in a busy emergency room on CBS “Code Black.” While audiences can anticipate the show’s return on 28th September, Hollingsworth reveals that his character’s dad played by Eric Roberts will show up at Angels Memorial Hospital. It turns his world upside down as the doctor has been trying

to escape his past. The actor lets on that one of his fellow cast mate’s life will be in jeopardy in the first episode. Benjamin is grateful for the opportunity not simply in terms of achieving nation-wide fame but having a glimpse into the lives of ER doctors. In order to finesse his craft, the actor takes time travel down to hospitals to shadow ER doctors. As the Hollingsworths have a doctor in the family, the actor hopes he can put his medical knowledge to good use in his next life. The 32 year old actor reveals that the show’s success is attributed to the culture built on set. While the show is fictional, “there is always a real ER doctor on set with a couple other actors from different background and 10 to 15 registered nurses that come onto set for about three to four days a week.” An avid hockey fan, the actor’s currently at work on a passion project that centers on a hockey icon. He wanted to us to remain hush on the specific details but the film will take place in 1930 and center around Hollingsworth’s favorite hockey team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Whereby the movie is still in development, he plans on filming it in Toronto and New York. Hollingsworth wrote the film on the rooftop of his old residence in Toronto, on Mutual St. a locations that had a clear view of the old Maple Leafs Gardens. The film will feature young families struggling to make ends meet in the aftermath of the Great Depression. “Hockey was their hope” he explains. Hollingsworth intends the film to be a love letter to the speed and physicality of the game. He feels no other film has truly captured the immersive

experience of playing in a high octane hockey game. While he currently resides in Los Angeles with his family, the multi-talented actor states that he did writing for the New York section of the film when he lived in the city for seven to eight months back in 2009. The Code Black actor married Nila Myers, a lingerie designer and Bar Method teacher back in 2012, after two years of dating. The couple recently welcomed son Hemingway Nash Hollingsworth back in July. Claiming that he can’t stop sharing pictures of his son, the new father states that fatherhood has completely changed him. “Life just stops when he smiles and I don’t want to be anywhere else than with him.” While changing diapers and feeding a newborn child in the early hours of the day may be a hassle, Hollingsworth says there is a certain sense of pride, identity and fulfillment to being a father. While his career has taken flight, things at home seem to be blissful as the actor reveals that he and his wife are planning for a second child. Despite finding success in Los Angeles, the actor says that he will always identify with being from Toronto. The Code Black actor credits Toronto for grounding him and allowing him to connect with his roots. With a budding career and a loving family by his side, the actor can only look back and laugh when looking back on how different his life would be had his green card papers hadn’t arrived on time.

LIVING THE DREAM Turnberry Ocean Club Residences By Haiting Tan

O

ver 50 years ago, Donald Soffer had a vision to turn 785 acres of South Florida undeveloped land into what is now known as Aventura. Originally called Turnberry, which is now associated with luxury and unparalleled service, he decided to rename the area AventuraSpanish for adventure- which was just the precipice of what he was about to embark on. After draining the site, what was to ensue became the renowned Aventura mall, and a large scale condominium development encompassing nearly 24,000 residences turning a healthy profit of an initial investment of land purchased at $5,000/ acre to plots over $2 million/ acre in 1981. Today the entrepreneurial foresight was passed from father to son as Jeffrey Soffer has earned his recognition as one of the country’s most highly regarded real estate devlopers. As CEO of Turnberry Associates he has led the $1 billion expansion of the Fontainebleau Miami Beach and created some of the most prized residential spaces including the luxurious Turnberry Ocean Club Residences. Also on his team is Dan Riordan, the president of residential development of Turnberry Associates, who has been with the company for over 18 years. With a career spanning three decades, the accomplished salesman has sold more than 3000 condominium units which has a total value of $2.5 billion. One of his proudest moments was developing the Turnberry Tower Arlington, currently the tallest condominium on the Washington DC skyline. The $350 million, 30-story luxury apartment has completely sold out. With DC in his pocket, Riordan has set sights on new horizon. Turnberry commissioned award-winning architects Carlos Zapata and Robert Swedroe to design ocean club residences that includes a three-story lobby which provides a breathtaking view of the ocean. The single tower site has a total of 154 residences each equipped with a family room and staff quarters with a full bath and closet. In addition to this, residents can soak in the sun while barbecuing on the ocean front terrace.

78 | resident.com

Duplexes and triplexes in the 54-story glass tower are equipped with a pool but residents are more than welcome to enjoy the amenities of the sky club, the brain child of Turnberry and Zapata. The condominium has over 70,000 square feet of amenities but more than half are in the sky club section. With three stories of amenities, including a nail and blow-dry spa, an outdoor pet retreat and an outdoor sky theatre area, occupants are offered first class amenities at their disposal, where quality, luxury, and exceptional service are the hallmarks of the Turnberry brand. The architects certainly have not neglected workout fanatics. The sky club is equipped with a yoga and pilates studio and two gyms. Situated 333 feet above the sea, residents can work out to an oceanfront view at the indoor fitness center or choose to exercise at the open-air gym. After an intense workout, residents can enjoy some down time at the hydrotherapy spas. For others who enjoy a game of tennis or golf, Turnberry is paying for the initiation fee and the first year’s dues to the prestigious Turnberry Isle Resort and Golf Club situated minutes away from the residential tower. With two Raymond Floyd-redesigned championship golf courses and Cañas Tennis club, three pools including a lagoon-style pool with waterslide and lazy river, three-story Spa & Fitness Center, and a private beach club, the club has amenities for people of all ages to enjoy. After a day of fun in the sun, the family can come together to enjoy a sumptuous Bourbon Steak at celebrity chef, Michael Mina’s steakhouse. If you’re looking for a fantastic apartment with an oceanfront view and top notch facilities, Ocean Club Residences is calling your name. The condominiums prices start from $4 million but duplexes range from $20 million to $35 million. Turnberryoceanclub.com

Sugar and Water By Logan Ronkainen, Head Bartender @ Trattoria Il Mulino, NYC and Owner / Mixologist @ Punch & Pie

CHILLED MAGAZINE

Simple syrup, by definition, is a sweetener of any kind in liquid form; most commonly table sugar dissolved into water. The dissolving of the sugar can be by heat or time and agitation (stirring at room temperature until dissolved). The strength can vary but the most common is 1:1 or 2:1 sugar/water.

A sweetener is an integral part of balancing out alcohol content and acidity in a cocktail, but it shouldn’t be used willy-nilly-like. If your cocktail does call for something sweet, most commonly simple syrup, why not add something that not only adds sugar, but also adds a depth of flavor?

By Alyssa Montalbano

R

Oils and extracts can be incorporated into simple syrup, resulting in what bartenders call oleo saccharum, which means “oily syrup.” The simplest way to make an oleo saccharum is by muddling citrus zests into sugar, letting it sit for an hour, then adding hot water to melt the sugar into a syrup. At my bar we do not use simple syrup; we religiously use various types of oleo saccharum. Lime, orange-lemon, and grapefruit are among the staples we keep behind our bar. We use the lime in Margaritas, Daiquiris, and Cosmopolitans, and the orange-lemon in sours, Collins, and even Old Fashioneds.

Here Are some ways to kick up your simple syrup Let’s not forget the final dimension of simple syrup. The water can be substituted with fruit juice, vegetable juice, coffee, or tea. Our most popular cocktail is a take on a Collins using simple syrup made with cucumber and mint juice combined with equal parts sugar. Adding sugar to the cucumber and mint juice also helps stabilize the shelf life, allowing it to last a couple of days rather than a few hours. Notorious Pink is a special blush cuvée made from 100% Grenache, the leading grape varietal at Domaine la Colombette in the south of France’s Lanquedoc region. The innovative name, packaging and luxury appeal are the creation of Notorious Wines Inc. Notorious Pink Rosé on it’s own works as a “session” beverage, meaning, you can sip on it responsibly throughout an activity and not worry about getting overly intoxicated. It’s relatively lower alcohol than drinking cocktails and lower in sulphites than white or red wine. Because it’s dry, it yields a lot less calories too. Notorious Pink is the standard for what you expect from a great rosé at a phenomenal price point. Coming in at under $20 a bottle and in side by side comparisons with some of the higher end (more expensive) roses’ it easily knocks them out of the water. All in all I would call it a benchmark rosé--if someone asks for a rosé, Notorious Pink is exactly the style of rosé they mean. - Logan Ronkainen Owner / Mixologist @ Punch & Pie NYC

REPLICA Introduces Line of Wines That Offer Flavors of Popular, Expensive Wines for Less

A

company called Replica® is doing just that – replicating some of consumers’ favorite wines, such as The Prisoner® Red Blend and Rombauer Vineyards® Carneros Chardonnay – and selling them for between 25-50 percent less. “Replica allows smart consumers, who appreciate great wine, to toss a $25 bottle of Replica in a decanter and convince their guests they’re drinking a bottle nearly double the price,” said Ari Walker, president of Replica. “Who doesn’t love a weekend wine at a weekday price?” Colorado-based Integrated Beverage Group, Replica’s parent company, is behind other popular and affordable wine brands such as Rascal®, Chime®, Cara Mia® and Reaper®. After concluding that consumers were paying too much for many of their favorite brands, Integrated Beverage Group set out to analyze the taste and aroma profiles of thousands of wines. Then, by partnering with award-winning winemakers, and Brett

Zimmerman, one of just 233 professionals worldwide to have earned the title of Master Sommelier since the first Master Sommelier Diploma Exam nearly 50 years ago, Replica was created. Ellipse Analytics, an independent analytical chemistry laboratory that works with Replica, uses stateof-the-art instrumentation to identify more than 50 specific flavor and aroma profiles in each wine. The company’s winemakers use this data – and classic blending techniques (no chemical alterations, as other companies have done) – to create wines that taste virtually identical to those that inspired them. Replica wines now available for purchase at wine retailers nationwide include Pickpocket Red Blend, Misbehaved Pinot Noir, Knockoff Chardonnay, Just Right Cabernet Sauvignon, Embellish Pinot Noir, Retrofit Chardonnay, Label Envy Pinot Noir and Scapegoat Valle dell’Adige Pinot Grigio. Respectively, the Replica wines are benchmarked to The Prisoner® Red Blend, Meiomi®

Pinot Noir, Kendall-Jackson® Vintner’s Reserve® Chardonnay, Joel Gott® 815 Cabernet Sauvignon, Erath® Oregon Pinot Noir, Rombauer Vineyards® Carneros Chardonnay, La Crema® Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, and Santa Margherita® Pinot Grigio. Replica wines have so far been well received; United Airlines just made Replica the Chardonnay for its First Class Cabins in the United States and Europe. “At the end of the day, people are paying too much for good wine,” said Walker. “Our disruptive model combines revolutionary science and world-class traditional winemaking to create masterful replicas that are indistinguishable to competitive national brands. The only difference that consumers can tell is in their pocketbooks.” replicawine.com

CINDY GUYER Queen of Romance By Bennett Marcus

90 | resident.com

If Cindy Guyer looks familiar when you walk into her Upper West Side restaurant/wine bar, Guyer’s, it’s because she has appeared on the covers of over 400 romance novels. A model and actress, she has appeared in numerous national commercials for products like Prell shampoo, plus movies and television shows, in addition to being the queen of romance novel covers. Guyer is the female Fabio, with whom she has shared many book covers. When we spoke to her on a recent fall afternoon, Guyer was about to head to the restaurant, where she wears many hats. “I do everything,” she says. “I’m very hands-on.” One night she’ll tend bar, another night she’ll do the cooking. “I’m little overworked, but that’s OK,” she laughs. “Right now, I’m on my way over there, my cook will get there around 3 o’clock, and I’ll start to bartend, and at 7 o’clock I’ll turn the bar over to my bartender and then just be the hostess.”

LITTLE LOLITA

But it turns out that wearing many hats has been the hallmark of this entrepreneur’s varied career, starting at age 15, when the legendary modeling agency founder Wilhelmina scouted her at a Connecticut restaurant where Guyer was lunching with her parents. At 16, Guyer was signed by Eileen Ford, and became the face for the Nancy Drew novels. The agency that cast the books threw a corset on Guyer one day and put her on a romance novel as a “little Lolita,” and she graduated from kid lit to romance novels. “I guess I did such a good job, they just kept using me.” She also studied acting, worked on soap operas, and, she says, just got very lucky with a twenty-year career doing book covers. Now, in her forties, she still does some occasionally. “I did one last month,” Guyer says. Yes, she says, the niche job is a lot of fun, and she loves the people in the industry. She recently went to a convention in Las Vegas for the magazine The Romantic Times, run by her friend, Kathryn Falk. “I call her my godmother. She’s so good to me.”

MR. ROMANCE

Guyer produced and hosted the series Mr. Romance

for Oprah’s Oxygen Network, which featured Fabio and Kiss rocker Gene Simmons. She also wrote the concept and starred in the Lifetime series The Perfect Nanny. So how did Guyer end up in the restaurant business? “I think actors are natural-born entertainers,” she says. “We love people, we like to entertain. I understand people.” Her parents were very social and constantly threw parties as she was growing up, and she would tend bar, and learned to cook and bake from her mother. She does do some of the on-site baking at Guyer’s, but wishes she had time to do all of it. “I’ll make a pie once every couple of days,” she laughs. She has trained the kitchen staff to make all of her favorite dishes.

A NEIGHBORHOOD STAPLE

Guyer designed the space, using mostly recycled materials, and after six months of renovations, they opened in July. Her touch is on everything; she wasn’t happy with the the way the bar turned out, and replaced it more than once until it finally met her standards. Her goal was to make the place a warm and welcoming respite for locals as well as

theatergoers from nearby Lincoln Center. “It’s very old-fashioned, and very homey, a place that you feel will be your home away from home,” Guyer says. “I put a lot of love into this. This is the most exciting thing I’ve ever done.” She hopes Guyer’s will become a neighborhood staple; she has a tenyear lease, and just added weekend brunch and outdoor seating. She plans to paper the powder room with her book covers.

ROMANTIC TIMES

Even with working 7-day weeks, Guyer is still planning new projects and tend the bar; along with Romantic Times editor Falk, she’s cooking up a series of novels set at the restaurant. “With restaurants, there’s always a lot of drama, especially with the staff. And if you’ve ever watched the Bravo show with Lisa Vanderpump, there’s always drama when you’ve got a bunch of kids around. Instead of having a reality television show, we’re going to have books.” guyersnyc.com 286 Columbus Ave. (Between 73rd & 74th) 212-887-8090

For starters, Di Meglio’s grandmother’s recipe of meatballs with dry aged beef and herb sheep’s milk ricotta will leave patrons craving for more. The homemade tagliatelle “arrabiatta” served with fresh lobster mixed with tomato and stracciatella is as authentic as dining on the cliffs of Positano. Their wood-fired grill not only bakes pizzas to perfection but also provides an unparalleled flavor to dishes such as spit-roasted lamb leg and grilled whole fish. As a traditional Italian restaurant, desserts include house-made cannoli with ricotta and classics such as Baba Rhum, a rum-soaked cake topped with whipped cream and berries. NIZUC

Mexican Luxury By Lisa Loverro

O

ne of the newest luxury hotels to open in Cancun, Nizuc Resort and Spa, located away from the craziness of the hotel zone on its own little secluded peninsula, is accessed via a quick 15-minute taxi ride from the Cancun airport. It’s situated on 29 private acres, tucked between mangroves and the white sand beaches along Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. To say NIZUC stands out from the rest of the hotels in Cancun is an understatement. It shines bright as a luxurious and sophisticated refuge, far different from the large hotels and party scene most often associated with Cancun. The service is impeccable, from reception to the turndown service, the staff maintains their professionalism along with Mexico’s warm hospitality. The calming decor of muted earth tones and wood finishes blends in seamlessly with the beauty of its natural surroundings. The resort has over 250 suites and villas, nestled within peaceful and pristine landscaped grounds. Most of the rooms enjoy private plunge pools and outdoor living spaces, along with outdoor showers and view of the lush terrain. There are six outstanding restaurants at the resort ranging from sophisticated Asian cuisine served at Indochine, to traditional Peruvian dishes served at Ni. While sitting poolside, at the main infinity pool, enjoy delicious local cuisine including

tacos and fresh guacamole, washed down with cold Mexican beers and exotic cocktails. The spa and fitness center were the highlight for me while visiting. The first ESPA-branded spa in the Mexican Caribbean, the spa offers a hydrotherapy circuit (offered to all guests receiving a spa treatment), including hot and cold tiled pools with massage jets along with steam and sauna. The spa menu offers all of the greatest hits you’re accustomed to receiving, along with Mayan inspired signature treatments such as the 120-minute Nizuc Renewal and Mayan Cacao. Activities here are endless. While you’re not paddleboarding, kayaking, or swimming, their fitness center offers a variety of classes for all levels including body conditioning and a Runner’s Club, where you’ll challenge yourself with a series of timed running sprints. An added bonus on property is their Peter Burwash Tennis program. Complimentary to children at certain times of the day and at an additional cost to adults, the tennis clinic is a perfect way to bone up on your serve and backhand while on vacation. In the evening, relax in their cigar lounge where cool jazz beats add to the atmosphere while a cigar roller prepares the perfect smoke. Nizuc offers the perfect blend of relaxation and activities with a large dose of luxury and high-end dining, surrounded by tropical breezes and moonlit nights. nizuc.com

The Grand Dame of Los Cabos

GRAND SOLMAR LAND’S END RESORT & SPA By Jennifer Pelaez

F

ounded in the mid-16th Century by Spanish navigators, Los Cabos has slowly evolved through the centuries into what is today an elite vacation destination boasting just the right combination of natural wonder, local allure and modern luxury. Comprised of two towns, the more cosmopolitan Cabo San Lucas and the quaint San Jose del Cabo, both offer a California vibe fused with true Mexican charm. Here, dramatic landscapes await where the crystal waters of the Sea of Cortez meet the turquoise waves of the Pacific. Dotted with private coves along a curvy coast of pale sand beaches, Cabo offers a plethora of activities, from championship golf courses, sun-swept beaches, sport fishing and world-class shopping along with an excellent array of resorts spanning this sparkling coastline. Among these spectacular retreats is the Grand Solmar Land’s End Resort & Spa, nestled be-

tween cliff and sea, and perfectly situated at the tip of the Baja Peninsula in a well-regarded area known as Land’s End. Set against the ethereal background of the Pacific Ocean and a massive natural rock formation, this hacienda-style resort features a captivating open and free flowing design that was built to complement its breathtaking surroundings. Recently renovated, the expansive lobby and common areas are decked with sumptuous wooden details, ornate chandeliers and rustic Mexican décor. Classic-luxury meets modern elegance, Grand Solmar caters to its guests with impeccable service and all the premiere amenities that one would expect at a luxury resort. Subterranean stone passages open to infinity pools framed by cactus gardens and winding pathways. However these seven swimming pools traverse 9 buildings that are artfully divided into distinct cabana and lounge areas which are spread throughout the grounds where you never feel overcrowded, but

perfectly relaxed in a paradisiacal setting. The 246 suites, ranging from Grand Studio to Four Bedroom Penthouses are spaciously elegant and outfitted with wooden and handcrafted furniture designed by Mexico’s finest artisans and adorned with ironwork and bright orange accents, complete with dramatic private stone terraces that face the ocean from where you can enjoy the fresh Pacific air. Each suite is equipped with a full kitchen including stainless steel appliances, and generously sized bathrooms that are simple and sleek with Spanish tiling. You can even enjoy a calming bath in one of the oversized tubs. Outside, the main infinity pool with Jacuzzi and swim-up bar commands stunning views of the ocean. Reserve a poolside cabana which literally sits on the widened shallow pool ledge to feel like you are truly in heaven. If you’re still seeking

an extra dose of luxury, step out of the sun and into the Sea Spa at Land’s End for a replenishing experience. A treatment here is worth the trip alone. The cabanas were carefully built directly within the cliffs so you feel one with nature as you climb up the steps leading to these elevated cabanas which open up to immaculate views of the majestic cobalt blue ocean. The sounds of the crashing waves and cool sea breeze set the stage for a heavenly pampering session. The therapeutic treatments include ancient healing and natural plant oils, sea salts and organic ingredients. Afterwards, the sensory journey continues with a sampling of healthy spa rejuvenating snacks in the lounge area. For those seeking more active options you are just a short walk from the lively downtown area where you can explore restaurants, lounges, and

clubs. Discover the nearby town of Todos Santos, about an hour drive, for a truly authentic excursion, which is filled with charming art galleries and quaint local shops. Back at the resort, you can partake in an endless number of land and water activities like deep sea fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, and sunset boat rides on one of the Solmar Hotel & Resorts own fleet of customized boats. The dining options at Grand Solmar similarly do not disappoint and provide a full range of flavors and cuisines that you may not even want to leave this splendid resort. Sample a fusion of authentic Baja, American, and Continental cuisines at La Roca Restaurant or head to Don Luis Restaurant which offers Mexican and Baja Mediterranean flavors while weekly theme nights complete with live entertainment like a Mariachi Band, keep the

menus exciting and interesting. Healthy dishes are available at Las Brisas along with fresh sushi. The plethora of bars and lounges provide easy access to savory snacks and cocktails throughout the day and evening. Regardless of your choices, you will leave Grand Solmar a refreshed and satisfied guest, which can also be said for all the Solmar Hotel & Resorts properties in the vicinity. A Tropical Journey into

PARADISE By Amaury Gelabert

A

s a Caribbean native, I have always said that a weekend getaway or vacation to the Caribbean is always a good option, and that has been reconfirmed during my staying at the wonderful San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. While the temperature fluctuates between 70s and 80s year-round, this cosmopolitan resort in paradise gives their guests an endless number of options to enjoy either at the property or the city. Rooms’ views facing the best views of the city and a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean are some of the amazing features of this tropical oasis. As you walk into the lobby you could see the modern and fresh interior décor and the vibrant Red Coral Lounge, perfect to relax during the day, but also perfect for some local made mojitos

and music during the night. The Stellaris Casino is also one of the most visited areas of the resort and it complements the lobby’s vibe. If you encounter yourself taking some Vitamin D by the pool, La Isla Grill & Pool Bar is the place to go to grab some refreshing cocktails or even a light lunch. A trip to Puerto Rico isn’t worth it if you don’t eat a good traditional Puerto Rican dish, but don’t worry because at La Vista Latin Grill, at the same property, you could choose from their traditional menu and get a taste from Puerto Rico. For those more curious to know the surrounding areas, Cocina Abierta and San Juan Hard Rock Café are just literally less than a minute walk from the resort. Once you get relaxed enough and after spending time at the clear waters from the private beach,

go for a walk through the streets of Condado or take a short taxi ride to Old San Juan (OSJ) and explore the rich culture and interesting history of the island by visiting popular places like El Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal, or just by getting lost through the colorful streets of OSJ. Also, the rainforest El Yunque, Guavate, and Isla Verde are some other worth-to-visit places. San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino will make you want more of this tropical island in the Caribbean and its attributes. Their outstanding service, food, amenities, and offerings are a combination of the perfect trip. If you want to make sure you’re going to enjoy and relax your next vacation, don’t forget that a visit to any piece of paradise never fails. marriott.com

BEAUTIFUL BODRUM By Jennifer Pelaez

W

hether you are seeking absolute escapism or a glamorous array of beach clubs and vibrant nightlife, Turkey’s sparkling Riviera boasts a fascinating and storied past - an alluring contrast between the Ancient city, evidenced by discernible fragments scattered throughout, and its modern and posh boutique hotels, trendy restaurants, delightful shops, and elegant yachts crowding the glittering marina. With its azure-sea backdrop, long palm-lined waterfront, and exotic appeal, Bodrum has an enigmatic elegance that pervades it, from the town’s most prominent landmark, the crowning Castle of St. Peter built by the Crusader Knights of Rhodes, to its flower-filled cafes and white-plastered backstreets, it is one of the most beautiful spots in the Mediterranean. Originally known as Halicarnassus in ancient times, Bodrum was famous for housing the Mausoleum of Mausolus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and continues to attract historians and archaeologists for its layers of history dating back to the ancient Greeks, the Byzantine Empire, and later its Ottoman occupiers. Now a world-class luxury destination, the Bodrum Peninsula in south-west Turkey is blessed

110 | resident.com

with a full spectrum of colors and a myriad of picture-perfect landscapes and vistas, ranging from green hilltop villages, white pebble beaches and a rugged coastline with astoundingly clear Blue Seas of the Aegean. Bodrum is comprised of the charming main town and marina area as well as the peninsula it occupies which is subdivided into numerous towns and villages, each with its own unique character and appeal. From the jetset town

of Yalikavak, situated on the Northwestern face of the peninsula, where Naomi Campbell and other celebrities have been known to frequent, to the more authentic and quaint fishing village of Gumusluk, Bodrum is a magical place - a coastal town in which traditional and modern life go along hand in hand harmoniously, and warrant plenty of time for exploration.

One of the best ways to truly experience Bodrum is to hire a private tour guide through an experienced local company such as Harmony Travel, where veteran guide Habib Duran offers a full overview of all the towns and villages while offering up interesting tidbits and historical references explaining what distinguishes each village from the next. From the city center, head northeast to pass by some of the famed beach resorts and clubs in Torba where you can find luxury hotels like the Mandarin Oriental and party the day away at Nikki Beach. Next, head west towards the north shore of the peninsula to Göltürkbükü where you can find quaint hotels and villas which fill the land inland from the beach, and resort complexes dot the landscape beyond the towns. Here, the Maçakizi Hotel is the kind of stylish and sophisticated luxury hotel that one must at least stop by for lunch or spend an afternoon lounging on the chic wooden sun deck over the waters of Turkbuku bay, filled with beautiful people in the know. Its small size (under 80 rooms) makes for an intimate and memorable experience.

and Bodrum city center is the Voyage Hotel Bodrum, perched on a hillside offering a perfect spot from which to explore all these locations, while being only a fun and scenic five minute water taxi from the heart of Bodrum. Voyage Bodrum offers 150 luxurious rooms with panoramic view of the St. Peter’s Castle and the stunning waters of Blue Bay. Recently remodeled the hotel has a modern and airy feel and is built into the hillside so has stunning views and outdoor stairways leading down to the pool and sun decks, one of which floats atop the crystal blue water and fit with cushions for sunbathing. The common areas are open and since it is an adults only resort has a relaxed and stylish ambiance. The rooms and public areas have that boutique feel with the lobby bar featuring white leather arm chairs and subdued lighting with relaxing lounge music and the chance to try a cocktail or two which are included as part of your stay at this all-inclusive hotel. Enjoy mouthwatering local dishes with healthy options at the buffet-style restaurant or the international à la carte restaurant, then head outside to the beach bar that showcase regular live music evenings along with local visiting DJ’s.

If all the sightseeing has left you exhausted spend time at the hammam or opt for a day at sea; sail, snorkel, jet-ski, windsurf, or dive to local sites encompassing wrecks, reefs, and caverns. A boat tour of the area’s many coves and bays is an ideal day out, or take a leisurely cruise along the coastline in a traditional wooden gulet to explore the quiet coves, citrus groves and wooded islands. One of the most spectacular spots are the Aquarium which features some of the clearest waters in the area filled with stunning fish and Orak Island which is further out yet worth the sail since it has shallow soft sand and pristine crystal water for swimming. Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Bodrum, soaking in the enchanting atmosphere, picturesque setting, and fabulous weather, and live in the lap of luxury. Although the season is only from April - October it is worth keeping in mind to pre-book for the upcoming season. Tourismturkey.org Voyagehotel.com Harmony Travel: +90 532 677 7956

Sometimes adults crave a much-needed escape from everyday life. From the hustle and bustle of the city to the daily responsibilities we all juggle, it’s easy to just want to get away from it all and have a carefree weekend of fun and rejuvenation. This is exactly what David Schreiber of Club Getaway offers his campers. For the past 40 years, Club Getaway has been a festive haven for men and women of all ages throughout their annual six-month season from April through October. Once a veteran of the corporate world, David turned his attention to running summer camps for children before purchasing the 320-acre camping resort four years ago. “I would always talk to parents who would drop off their kids at camp and say to me, ‘I want to do this,” he recalls. “So I’ve always known the Club Getaway concept, and now I can give that experience to everyone.” Running the camp with his wife Gayle, David provides a means to get away from the claustropho-

bia of the everyday grind. “Our overall mission is to bring the camp experience to everyone,” David says. “We want to bring that magic that you can only find when you get caught up in the moment, when no one is looking at their phones and just socializing in real life.” Club Getaway will hold their legendary Fall Finale from October 7th through the 9th, to close the 2016 season with a bang. “We’re going to bring Halloween forward with a fun, zany weekend,” he explains. “Every year it’s an absolute great time and everyone gets really into it.” Starting with an Oktoberfest happy hour, the Fall Finale weekend will feature adult activities like kayak races, zip lining, a Geronimo Jump and a Jets vs. Giants-themed flag football game, complete with tailgating, cheerleaders and a halftime show. “There’s a collective energy that’s simply amazing,” says David. “People get up on the ta-

bles and start dancing, just letting go. I love seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they get caught up in the moment.” The Fall Finale culminates with a massive walkthrough haunted house and costume dance party, a true celebration of the fun that comes with the fall season. “Watching people’s faces when they get scared or see a great costume is just hysterical,” he admits. “That’s what we’re about, creating magical moments.” After 40 incredible years, Club Getaway is as innovative and entertaining as ever, truly reminding us why we enjoyed camp as children. “300 people in the same place with the same goal to let go of life’s stresses creates a community you can’t find anywhere else,” concludes David. “I sincerely promise you, it’s unlike anything you’ve ever experienced.” clubgetaway.com

ith great risks comes great rewards, is a mantra that New Jersey native, Manny Cabo has lived by. With that mentality, he entered reality singing competition “The Voice,” and came out as a standout performer in the blind auditions. The former fashion photographer beat out 46, 000 other contestants and was the only New Jersey native to make it to the second round. The thought of leaving his family for months and surviving on his savings worried him, but with all four judges turning their chairs around hoping to land Cabo on their team, his sufferings were long forgotten. The 45 year old competed against Northern Irish rocker, Keith Semple, and was unfortunately sent home in the battle rounds. Despite his disappointment, winning was not the ultimate goal but rather it was to ensure himself that he had the abilities to be a singer and to step out of his comfort zone to achieve his dreams. Since his appearance on the reality show, he has received on onslaught of fan mail thanking him being an inspiration and for motivating them to chase their dreams. While his passion for arts started to fuel in elementary school, the Seton Hall alum did not start singing in bands until his final year in college. While he entertained the thought of being a radio DJ, he ultimately found a job in the corporate world. Despite the stable employment and income, Cabo was miserable. It wasn’t until he had his creative juices flowing again while working for Apple as a certified trainer that he realized it was essential to get back to the arts. Garnering attention as an opening act for bands such as Cold, 3 Doors Down and Lifehouse, Cabo eventually decided to take a four year break from music because he could not see eye to eye with others in the music industry. Three years ago he joined the cover band, Ultrafuze, which fueled the singer’s fire to pursue music again. His performance on the reality television show has led to “endorsement deals with Sennheiser, Clayton Picks, Thalia Capos and Westone in Ear monitors along with an array of radio and television appearances all contributing to my current successes as an artist.” Dropping his first EP “Stratospheric,” was just his first step to cementing his ride to superstardom, Cabo has been working on “Timeless,” a full length album and hopes to tour nationally next year. Despite his career skyrocketing, the rocker has not forgotten to give back to charity. “I love doing charity work and have worked closely with, Kids with Cancer, Child Autism, Breast Cancer, all Local and National Police departments, Military / Last Salute organization that ensures proper burials for our lost heroes.” With a big heart and a soulful voice, Cabo is sure to hit the music business in stride. KELLI O’HARA

The Original Triple Threat: Broadway, Opera, & Television By Kristen Oliveri

F

rom her youth growing up as a young girl from Oklahoma to then relocating to the music mecca that is the Big Apple to then making it on Broadway, she’s experienced it all. Today, she is not only a formidable Broadway powerhouse, but can also add Opera star and Silver Screen actress to her already impressive resume. While she’s often working on multiple projects at once, O’Hara enjoys the versatility of how her career had evolved over the years, and plans to continue to expand her horizons on every front. O’Hara sat down with Resident’s Kristen Oliveri to reveal her insights on the Broadway audition process, fashion favorites, fun facts and her personal feelings about television. Q: When you were first starting out, what was the audition process like for you? Is it different today in 2016? A: I was non-union when I moved here. I had done Summer Stock and got right into the non-union auditions all the time and then I got a tour, which was union. I have friends that are non-union and they won’t get seen [in the audition process], and if they do, they have eight bars to scream their faces off. Because ensembles are getting smaller and money’s tight, in the last several shows I’ve done my understudies were dancers who sing. If that was me today, I wouldn’t have made it through the dance portion of it. I danced enough but I would’ve never been hired as a dancer to cover a lead. Every musical theater-ie show—the ones with a lot of dancing—the dancers are very talented girls who are true triple threats. If someone was coming up today, I would tell them they need more dancing classes if they sing, and more singing classes if they dance. Q: What was your first big role on Broadway? A: Sweet Smell of Success. It was one of those stories that everyone’s heard me tell! I crashed an audition and pretty much everyone

128 | resident.com

was on their lunch break. I talked a few people into letting me audition and one of them happened to be Marvin Hamlisch. He actually played for me and I didn’t know who he was! I was snapping my fingers for him to go faster. I think they got a kick out of the fact that I was so naïve and I ended up getting the job. I just had a feeling about that particular part. Q: You’ve been doing more and more TV. What’s that experience like compared to theater? A: Theater is my heart. It always has been and always will be. I want to use every muscle that I can because I think they feed each other. That’s why I’m really excited about a few new TV projects I’m working on at the moment. Q: What other projects are you working on? A: In October, it’s my Carnegie Hall solo debut. It’s just me and my band, which is a little nerve wracking since I’ve done it with a full orchestra before, but this will be much more intimate. Q: What are you currently reading? A: Right now I’m reading Every Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave. I also like to read biographies and autobiographies a lot. I’m always reading Carole Burnette’s or Diane Keaton’s biography. I just read Drew Barrymore’s Wildflower. I like to hear about peoples’ lives from my industry.

Q: What designers are you a fan of for a big occasion or work event? A: I love beautiful fashion, but I’m the first to admit that it’s never a priority for me. Michael Kors is a beautiful person and someone who is doing wonderful things with his real power now. Christian Siriano is someone who has always supported theater and dressed me. Matthew Christopher built two beautiful gowns for me for my Carnegie Hall stint and Anna Wintour dressed me for the Tony’s last year. The people who dress us [those in the Broadway community] have to love theater and support us. That’s what makes it special. Q: What’s next for you? A: Just more of the same. I’m glad about what I’m doing, I’d just love more variety. If I’m doing a little bit of television here and musicals there, I’ll be happy. In the end, I try not to put too much pressure on anything anymore and I’ve learned not to plan. On a personal note, I’ll have two teenagers soon, so my husband and I plan to do more traveling. Within the next 10 years, I’d like to reach further away from my core. I’m originally from Oklahoma and I’d like to work overseas and do concerts and do some things outside of New York.

OFF-BROADWAY HITS & MISSES From One Fascinating Man to Hordes of Aliens By Barry Bassis

H

ershey Felder is a one-of-a-kind artist. A classically trained pianist, actor, playwright, and singer, he presents one-man shows, which he writes, about composers, including George Gershwin, Frederic Chopin and Irving Berlin. His latest at 59E59 Theaters is Maestro about the extraordinarily gifted Leonard Bernstein. When the audience enters the theater, Bernstein is on the screen in one of his television lectures about classical music. No one has been so effective at explaining music to a mass audience. Then, Felder appears as the maestro and proceeds to reveal Bernstein in all his complexity, as both and artist and a person. His lifetime of smoking was probably responsible for his death at age 72. Much time is spent on Bernstein’s relationship with his orthodox Jewish father, who opposed his son embarking on a career in music. After the untimely death of Gershwin in 1937, Bernstein resolved to succeed him as the leading American composer. Bernstein the critic had mixed feelings about his predecessor—he didn’t care for “Rhapsody in Blue” but thought more highly of the later “Concerto in F.” He was close to Aaron Copland but was hurt when Cirque du Soleil’s Toruk - The First Flight. Photo Credit: Errisson Lawrence

130 | resident.com

the composer told him that his own classical pieces were not very good and that his future was as a conductor.

(best known for movies, such as Shakespeare in Love and t.v. shows, e.g., Thirtysomething). The run has been extended until October 23rd.

Initially, Bernstein’s homosexuality is vaguely alluded to. An early mentor, conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos, is presented as his initial seducer. When Bernstein announced that he was going to marry Chilea-born pianist Felicia Montealegre, his sister asked whether he was abandoning the other side of his life.

For something completely different, I headed to Barclays Center for Cirque du Soleil’s Toruk – The First Flight. This is a sort of prequel to James Cameron’s Avatar. The space is immense, the visual effects fantastic and the acrobats, contortionists, puppets, gymnasts and multitude of others impressive. A narrator speaks English while the others converse in gibberish. Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon are the show’s writers, directors, and multimedia directors. They are better at the last two tasks than the first. The kids in the audience seemed to enjoy themselves.

Bernstein and Montealegre remained together for 26 years and had three children. He eventually left her for a male lover. Bernstein’s greatest success as a composer was not for his classical works but his theater music. Felder speeds through his historic collaborations with Comden and Green in On the Town and with Sondheim on West Side Story. I wish Felder could have spoken about the Revuers, a comedy troupe with Bernstein, Comden, Green and Judy Holiday, before they all became famous. Felder is an engaging actor and excellent pianist. His sole failing is as a singer.

Cheeseburger Deluxe (presented by Just Kidding Theatre Company) is a (thankfully) low-tech musical at the 4th Street Theater about a group of friends, all struggling performance artists. The cast is commendable: Austin Archer, Richard Binder, Casey Keenan, Katie Mack, John Mervini, Samantha Schiffman and Morissa Trunzo. As directed by Stacy Lee Tilton, they all seem quite natural and sing well. J. William Bruce wrote the book, music and lyrics. The songs were pleasant but the soap opera-ish script meandered.

BOOKS du JOUR OCTOBER 2016 By Frederic Colier | General@bookcasetv.com

“Sweet as Sin,” by Susan Benjamin. (Prometheus Books, P 320, $18.00)

“Virtual Billions,” by Eric Geissinger. (Prometheus Books, P 295, $25.00)

“No Map to this Country” by Jennifer Noonan. (Da Capo/Life Long Books, p 316, $19.99)

“Children of the New World,” by Alexander Weinstein. (Picador, P 240, $ 16.00)

“Nowhere Girl,” by Susan Strecker. (Thomas Dunne Books, P 297, $ 25.99)

I cannot imagine dentists buying this book. In fact it is probably number one on their list of banned books. Though I would recommend it to them, just to better know their enemies. “Sweet as Sin,” is all about candies. Sweet and sugary. The very stuff your teeth dislike but which constantly hits the sweet spot on your taste buds. I do not know of kids or adult who do not enjoy candies, even surgarless ones. Benjamin is a candy specialist, and she has written an incredible journey through the evolution of confections. It is not just a history of candies, but also an almanac filled with intoxicating stories of the country, starting with Native American and the littleknown son of a slave woman. Like all good candies, the book has a lingering flavor, which will make you ponder about the changing quality of our palate through time. Why for some generations eating barks, roots and bugs were considered treats, whereas now candies have to be coated with layers of sugar before anyone sucks on them? At heart, the book is an unwrapped story of the evolution of the American society, and of the development of gustatory passions, and the invention of lots and lots of sticky fingers.

This is the book that will explain to you what is Bitcoin and how they came to be, if you only have heard about them and thought it was just another App. If you are looking for a roller-coaster ride in the underworld of alternative finance, this is the book as well. You will learn about the reclusive genius creator of Bitcoins, Satoshi Nakamoto, who, on his own, decided to wage war against the world financial and banking system, and the prince of darkness himself, Ross Ulbricht, who used Bitcoins to create the largest Dark Web superstore, Silk Road, where drugs, hacking service, counterfeit money and even murdering could be purchased. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Geissenger tells the story of the multi-talented Winklevoss twins, Harvard, Olympics, lawsuit against Facebook’s Zuckerberg, for stealing their idea (which they won), and their contribution to the rise of the Bitcoin cause.

This book is about the “A-Word.” A could stand for Atomic, since explosion is implied, but in this case it is about Autism. Autism is a trend that keeps on gaining momentum, and its label, once inflicted on a child, reverberates as a social suicide for families. The merit of Jennifer Noonan’s journey is precisely to expose the daily struggle families with autistic children must live through, bringing her resourceful personality to the front. When her son was diagnosed, like most parents, she found herself entering a world, she was unprepared for, a world laden with misinformation and guidance. Her struggle was not to investigate the whys but rather to locate the unique abilities and challenges of her child to change his plight.

Since we have not covered a single short-

A sophomore book for Susan Strecker after her elegiac and biographical debut novel “Night Blindness,” which appeared on a TV episode of Books du Jour last season. In “Nowhere Girl,” Susan has lost none of her style, although this time, her voice takes on a fantasy tone, which at times makes this engaging novel swing between a thriller and a woman-injeopardy story. But because the story focuses on the main protagonist’s rumination (not too much cop, not too much ghost) it remains a novel, though a suspense-ridden one.

Putting this book down was impossible, the stories being so captivating and strangely unique in their excesses. The fact that this parallel banking world has fueled legions of steroid-pumped-up coding hacks, and “canny” bitcoin miners, added to my curiosity. For certain, the book will make you feel like a dinosaur, especially if your job consists in reading books, and on paper that is. The world of bitcoins is so far from my consciousness that I could not help pondering what kind of world is taking shape out there. Once you put the book down, you may catch yourself looking at your neighbors suspiciously, cautious before making another online purchase or placing another call on your smartphone, or else grateful that, at long last, after the banks took the country down the path of the Dust Bowl, that some individuals are doing something to replace them.

“No Map to this Country,” captures the initial sense of despair watching her child scream and spin, while feeling powerless to help, to her decision to put a stop to it. Gathering her own information, leading an endless crusade, she tackles the world of dietary, immunology, and metabolic research, to seek a treatment for her son. She began experimenting with alternative diets, supposed to be beneficial to autistic children. I will not reveal whether she succeeded or not, but her journey allowed her to sound her limitations. With stark frankness and uncanny humor, Noonan narrates how through her six-year ordeal and with determination, she managed to rescue her own family from implosion. Autism not only impacts children but families above all.

story collection yet, I thought it was time to remedy the problem. “Children of the New World,” which is garnering lots of accolades in the publishing world, is the perfect book to initiate this book review page. It is not your customary middle of the road sentimental or experimental story collection. Rather it is a speculative one, in a new genre, often referred to as Human Future fiction. What is at stake here is the becoming of Man, and I mean Man in the broadest possible sense, as in mankind. For the stories reflect on the effect of technology and our interaction with it, notably the increasing blurring between reality and the virtual world. Part Magic Realism part sci-fi, the story collection will take you back and forth into a hard-to-breathe utopian-dystopian world of societies gone numb. Here robots have better gut-feelings than humans. Social media lives inside your brain. Video games are integrated into lives. Memories are manufactured, as in “The Cartographer,” where the main character makes virtual memories, while he grapples with someone he once loved, and only a “memory bank” helps him to retrace his past and experience it again. But the most frightening aspect about the stories is not the obvious lost of practical ability in daily life, such as writing, but the widespread disembodiment that comes with relying only on simulated technology. All the protagonists run around steeped in technology to fill out existential voids unaware that the very technology reinforces the sense of disconnection and loss. It is all uneasy and completely creepy, but what a read.

Cady Martino has a twin sister, Savannah, a popular girl who, one night, is found murdered. The police at once classified the murder as a “random attack of opportunity.” However, Cady never stops hearing from her sister. Savannah keeps sending her messages that make no sense. Years later, Cady, now a bestselling author of suspense, makes a chance encounter, which gives her the missing piece of the puzzle. But in order to solve her sister’s murder, Cady must now cross a maze of betrayals and deceptions dating back to their youth.

MACHINE GUN PREACHER Founder of Angels of East Africa By Sabrina Ruggiero & Nicole Troup

A

few years ago I heard about the movie Machine Gun Preacher starring Gerard Butler and was intrigued by the somewhat paradox title. As I watched it I was deeply moved by the true story of Sam Childers, also know as “The Machine Gun Preacher.” I could hardly believe this story was a real person’s life. Who exactly is Sam Childers? In our opinion he is one of the most influential men in the South Sudan, Uganda and Ethiopian regions for many years. Not to mention one of the most controversial pastors in the world who founded the humanitarian organization Angels of East Africa in Eastern Africa. In his early years, despite growing up in a good and loving family, he unfortunately fell into the depths of drug dealing and violence. Growing weary from his destructive way of life, he began to learn about God after going to church with his wife. He then left behind a life of drugs and crime, and set up a hardscrabble church in rural Pennsylvania where he used his meager savings to take his first missionary trip to Africa. While he was there he ended up in South Sudan which was in the midst of the Second Sudanese War and as a result had stumbled across a child’s dead body that was torn apart by a landmine from the war. Sam fell to his knees in devastation and vowed to God that he would do whatever it took to help the people of Souh Sudan. Shortly after, Sam took his vow very seriously. He built an orphanage in South Sudan and then began to lead armed missions into the bush to rescue children from the infamous Lord’s Resistance

Army (L.R.A) a brutal rebel milita that kidnapped 30 thousand children and murdered hundreds of thousands of villagers. It wasn’t long after until tales of his rescue missions began to spread and villagers began calling him “The Machine Gun Preacher”. His story was turned into a book he authored “Another Man’s War” which later inspired the 2011 movie, The Machine Gun Preacher” starring Gerard Butler and Michelle Monaghan. To this day Sam has worked so hard to continue helping the children of Angels of East Africa which led him to win the Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice in 2013. He is the first American to ever receive this prestigious honor. Sam has been building orphanages in South Sudan, Uganda and Ethiopia as well as schools, a church, and a 1,000 acre farm in Northern Uganda that now thrives with self-sustaining crops and livestock to feed the children. One aspect we love about Angels of East Africa is that they’re not just about giving handouts to the children, but they firmly believe in creating sustainable programs that teach the children jobs, education and independence so that their futures are secure. This was clearly seen when my colleague, Sabrina and I visited the orphanage and farm a couple of years ago. Sabrina was there to support Sam in his initiative to help local people succeed in their talents and exposure by filming a movie on location there and I was there to work with the kids on creating an art exhibit of their paintings

that expose their stories as victims of the war. The childrens artwork will be exhibited and auctioned off at The Angels of East Africa Gala at the City Winery in NY on November 4, 2016. To learn more about this Red Carpet event featuring the Machine Gun Preacher and Oscar and Golden Globe nominee and actor Michael Shannon visit: https://angelsofeastafricagala.splashthat.com. Tickets are limited so now is the time to buy. The promotional video for the event, filming the children working on their inspirational paintings can be seen on www.artistportraits.biz. Sam Childers, who we are proud to call our friend, has given these children a second chance at life, truly. To us and more importantly to the children orphaned by the violent acts of the LRA, Sam Childers has been a Godsend to these children. He brings these children a safe haven, hope, trust, education, a will to live when they saw no hope in sight and most importantly love. Love beyond measure that in itself speaks volumes. How many of us can say we would risk everything to do something like this? We are truly inspired by his sacrificial life for others, so helping him raise awareness is the least we can do. Please join us in our efforts to help these children that are so desperately in need of people who truly care about their well being. To this day, the orphanage is the largest in South Sudan and has housed over 1,000 children. But unfortunatly many Sudanese children still suffer and are in need of rescue from the atrocities of war.

O

ctober is Breast Cancer awareness month, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed in there lifetime. Awareness and early detection is the key to living. What better way to bring awareness then dogs with pink ribbons, and that is what the PupScouts will be doing in the month of October. A few years ago I meet two great ladies who want to give back and involve their dogs. Meet Susan Goodwin with her dog Tasha Bella (morkie) and Jennifer-Jo Moyer, with her dog Meteor (poodle) together they are the National Troop Leaders of PupScouts.Org. Their vision for the PupScouts which was founded in 2010 was to meet and socialize with dogs and there owners . Lulu and I are proud to be members. Susan and Jennifer plan a full year in advance for us PupScouts. They were nostalgic for the days of being a Brownie and Girl Scouts, thus the name PubScouts was born. We have our pets wear Brown PubScouts uniforms. We have a wonderful time socializing with our pets, wether it be at Shake Shack in the Park or a beautiful Hotel in Chinatown, on there roof walking the runway. Our meetings open with a Roll call then with the help of the parents we say and bark the PubScout Pledge. On my honor I will try to do my duty to help the dog community and my country. To help make humans smile, and to be their guard and to
