AUTUMN PLEASURES
O
ne of the best seasons of the year is fall and with the gorgeous Indian summer weather we have had the pleasure of enjoying an extended summer.
For this issue we feature the very best of fall. Just on the heels of New York Fashion Week we showcased top beauty trends spotted backstage along with highlights from some of our favorite catwalks of up and coming designers and trendsetters who are making a splash. One of the highlights of October is the illustrious Hamptons International Film Festival- be sure to catch our guide for the not-to-be-missed premieres and parties. We also had the privilege to get up close and personal with the dynamic and inspirational Daymond Johnson- one of our favorite sharks on Shark Tank. Daymond opened up on his battle with cancer as well as his true life rags to riches story that started with a $40 investment that grew into a multi billion dollar game changing fashion entity. His infectious entrepreneurial spirit is truly motivating and this month he speaks openly and honestly about his journey, learning from his mistakes along the way, as well as his personal perseverance and fortitude. With fall comes the bounty of gastronomic options and we explored the city and beyond for the best new restaurant openings that will have you salivating. October is one of the best times to travel and we highlighted our favorite weekend getaways to exotic locales. We explored the eternally chic Cabo San Lucas, historic Santo Domingo, trendy Seattle, and the sunny coastal towns of South Florida from Key West to the Palm Coast. The unspoiled and timeless beauty of the Galapagos Islands served as a backdrop to this month’s fashion shoot with Mariana Downing. Sailing aboard the luxurious and eco-friendly Galapagos Legend we ventured to the far Eastern region of the Galapagos archipelago this month for our cover shoot. We found dramatic landscapes with red sand beaches, jagged black lava walls and cliffs that were home to indigenous species of marine and bird life not found anywhere else in the world. This was a true testament to the power of nature and the evolution of life. Giant tortoises as well as sea lions and marine iguanas all happily posed in our shoot as we visited their home. Fall is a time of harvesting what we have worked for during the year, so take the time to enjoy the pleasures of the season.

MEET OUR CONTRIBUTORS My name is Eduardo Aguirre and I am a photographer living in the beautiful city of Miami. I came to the United States from Peru over 30 years ago. I started photography a few short years ago as a hobby as most photographers do, taking pictures of landscapes, nature, sunrises, sunsets, etc. After doing this for about a year, my enthusiasm quickly evolved and manifested into shooting portraits, fashion and swimwear. I find myself working endless hours perfecting my craft. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that I would be experiencing all of the wonderful opportunities to collaborate with highly talented individuals. I am so grateful to so many for helping me achieve my success. If you love what you do and you’re passionate about it, never give up.
Gabriel Pazmiño is a professional photographer with over 10 years of experience in photography, predominantly in fashion, advertising and publishing. Gabriel has worked independently and has contributed to several national and international publications, such as: Hola, Cosas, Abordo de Tame in Ecuador, and In Polis Art in Portugal. Gabriel has also participated in several advertising campaigns with prestigious companies and brands such as: Coca Cola, ADIDAS, Reebok, Avon, Dove, and more.Gabriel Pazmiño stands out from his peers with his technical expertise of mastering the image with sophisticated and innovative lighting and a talented eye. Udo Spreitzenbarth is an international fashion, beauty and art photographer. He was born in Germany and resides in New York City. Growing up in Germany, Udo developed an interest for photography, fashion and modeling early on. It was during his architecture studies when Udo realized his passion for being behind the camera. After being only one year in New York City, he photographed his first billboard campaign that landed on a screen in Times Square. His editorial work has been featured in international issues of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire and many more. Udo has worked with numerous celebrities such as Meg Ryan, Tyra Banks, John Legend, Salma Hayek, Usher and The Beach Boys, just to mention a few. His art photography has received international acclaim with a successful series of solo exhibitions in New York, Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Shanghai and Beijing. www.udophotography.com | Instagram: @udophotography
Fashion is a crowded industry, and it takes a lot to stand out. With that being said, Celebrity Stylist TyRon Mayes has worked for two decades at the top of the fashion industry. After officially launching his career with the late world renown photographer, Francesco Scavullo, Mayes styled approximately 120 high fashion covers including: Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Arise, West East, And Men and our cover story featuring Jessica Pimentel. Known as “The Super Stylist”, Ty-Ron styled celebrities such as: Tyra Banks, Mariah Carey, Eminem, Iman, Diane Kruger, Heidi Klum, Tyson Beckford, Michelle Rodriguez, Kyle McLaughlin, Ian Somerhalder, Megan Fox, Elle MacPherson, Oprah Winfrey and many more. He left his mark on ads for Saks Fifth Avenue, Maybelline, Iman, Miss Clairol, Dark and Lovely and the coveted Guess Campaign. Mayes was personally asked by Executive Producer, Tyra Banks, to join her hit television show America’s Next Top Model as the Fashion Consultant and Stylist to Banks for Cycle 20, in which, he conceptualized and styled 39 on-camera looks and then became the First Lead Wardrobe Stylist to America’s Next Top Model Cycle 21 creating 140 looks for the show and styled the finale fashion show. This position came with several on-camera appearances. Ty-Ron Mayes has become a highly sought after fashion personality and a front row fixture at New York Fashion Week. His drive to create beautiful fashion statements for his clients has resulted in Mayes penning his first book, which will be based on his philosophies and techniques in fashion. GEORGE WAYNE -Talk about the origins, the early ideas, notion, for this new App creation Photo Butler. ANDY GOLDFARB: I started Photo Butler because I believe the two greatest gifts you can give are love and laughter.
GW - Which is a great mantra to have and support – the gift of love and laughter. But how is Photo Butler a game changer in the world of social media applications? AG – We are changing the way the world shares memories.
GW - In what way? AG – We give you instant, automatic private photo sharing and there is no one else that can do this but Photo Butler. And so what we enable you to do is to set up a stream for an event and ‘’automagically’’ the photos are shown. So basically, it takes three seconds to take a smartphone photo and forty seconds to post it. And I believe that people are so busy texting and sharing that they are actually missing the real moment, so I want people to really absorb the moment, the memories wherever they may be with this App. Simply meaning that with Photo Butler the minute you take an image it is ‘’automagically’’ shared with your very select chosen group. So I want you to be able to share the memories and the love and the laughter and all the mundane moments free of distraction. So I want you to be able to share the memories and the connective essence without being distracted. Texting photos is so 2016.
GW - So Photo Butler is the future. AG- Yes! What we have done is unique. So, for instance, say you are at a wedding where a hundred guests can take up to one thousand photos and all the guests have joined on to Photo Butler then document the event for a life time of memories. You download the Photo Butler and
tap in the given code and it’s as easy as that. One of the first huge events where we launched Photo Butler was the Pan Mass Challenge which is the largest athletic cancer charity event in the country. Over three days, 5,000 riders downloaded Photo Butler and were able to share their memories without the distraction of texting and posting. Once you do that — you will never again have to say text me a photo or can you take an image with my phone because all the images are shared amongst everyone. Being in the stream enables you to be fully present in ways like never before. And these images are only shared amongst all the people invited say to a wedding or maybe it’s a charity event weekend. It’s all shared ‘’automagically’.’
instance, a band could use the Photo Butler backstage behind the scenes and share with their fan base in that context. What is more, we also have unique algorithms that sort through each and every photo to make sure the quality is pitch perfect. We analyze almost two hundred pieces of data for every photo so that every image is as photo perfect as possible. Photo Butler also allows us to customize the algorithms to provide more featured content. So, for instance, for the Pan Mass Challenge users wanted to highlight finish line photos or celebration photos and we were able to adjust the algorithms to provide that featured content. At the end of the day there is no question that Photo Butler will help enhance your social media presence.
GW - And the launch was when?
GW - How did this idea come about ? Was it a brain storm session with a group of tech geeks over herbal tea?
AG – We launched quietly in March and the broad launch was in New York this past Fashion Week. And we already have thousands of users.
GW - So it is event specific.
AG – No. The idea was actually mine. I came up with it. I have been doing this for twenty years and it comes from my heart. I have been documenting my family for twenty years and then it dawned on me that I needed to give everyone their own Photo Butler. It was my daughter Lucy who insisted I call it Photo Butler and so I bought the domain name. I then wrote the business plan and assembled the team to create it. I have investments in over 150 companies and I recruited the best minds from all those companies to help create Photo Butler. Seventy percent of the team I assembled have worked together before and this is what we have created. We built this App because we want to change the way the world shares memories.
AG – Yes, for the most part, but no event is too big or too small. It may be a dinner with three friends or it may be a beach party for three hundred. Whatever the event, this App allows you to truly enjoy the moment and collect the photo memories like never before. And so now the next effort is to work with bands and brands to better allow them to enable their audiences to have authentic user generated content. For
GW - And there is no doubt in my mind that you will Andy Goldfarb! GW completely and enthusiastically supports the notion that you are the coolest and smartest and nicest under-theradar tech titan genius in America. And the world will come to know your name and acknowledge your particular genius and gifts to mankind in short order.
GW- And yet I will ask once again do we really need another App to crowd my Smartphone? AG – This is unique – as I said – because it is the only way to ‘’automagically’’ share photos to a vast controlled group and with immediate impact. There are a lot of other ways of sharing and they are all very manual. Photo Butler is unique for that one reason. Photos are not manually posted and it is far more seamless than any other App out there.

Over 40 top business leaders, professionals and entrepreneurs came out to hear Betty Liu, Bloomberg TV Anchor, Founder and CEO of Radiate, share the story of her broadcast career and lessons learned. and mindset that it takes to be a leader, that I can inspire and share these lessons with others. I always learn a lot from being in a room with such driven and motivated people like the one Karolina Dehnhard organized for us today. As the Associate Publisher of Resident Magazine, I had the amazing opportunity to sit down with Betty Liu to get a little more insight about who she is. I found her extremely relatable and incredibly creative. Whether she is interviewing the CEO of a company, a former president of the United States or having conversations with the moms from her sons’ school you find that she is so relatable, down to earth and compassionate about what others do which I feel truly adds to her success. In my interview Betty stated that life is too short to not be yourself. When asked about work-
life balance since Betty has twin thirteen-year-old boys and an incredible career that keeps growing by the minute, she responded, “There really isn’t true work-life balance. When you love what you do you don’t actually need work life balance. Because work is your life and life is your work. Liu stated that when you love what you do it gives you so much energy which makes you find the time and gives you even more time. When I asked her what is the biggest lesson her parents taught her is, she spoke about how the goals you have and success you want must be earned through hard work. The biggest lesson she will pass on to her boys is that she wants them to take risks and not let fear take over the pursuit to their happiness or goals in life. Be confident in life and don’t settle. I was so touched by the
comment because this is what I tell my son. Betty says take action and don’t let fear prevent you. At least if they fail they learn from it. Betty is so grateful and feels so connected to people as she shares her stories and is honored that people will share back with her. Hearing people give her advice throughout her life and people saying the right words in the right moment can truly change your life and that is what I know Radiate can do for so many people. As always, we like to ask what her favorite places are. She states one of her favorite restaurants in NYC is Per Se where she had a private dinner for Radiate with Chef Keller and loves Sumba, an island in eastern Indonesia. It truly impressed her with its gorgeous landscape and waves for surfing. What a great event with Betty Liu at Budd Larner and we are looking forward to her next chapters.

CARMEN MARC VALVO & CHRISTIAN KNAUST

here’s nothing better than a good love story like that shared by legendary designer Carmen Marc Valvo and brand President Christian Knaust, who first met when both were students at Parson’s. Now married, the couple celebrated their 25th anniversary together back in 2014 with a swanky soiree in the Hamptons. Helming an extremely successful fashion empire, Chris and Carmen spend most days working diligently together on the next creation. But, nights and down-time are mostly spent at one of their four fab abodes: A 200 year old villa near the Bosnian sea in Sweden, bequeathed by Christian’s family, a 40acre residence in Costa Rica, an apartment at the iconic Majestic on Central Park West -converted from two apartments, the dwelling encompasses an entire floor, and is a sculpture filled oasis with stunning views. The oceanfront Bridgehampton estate which also abuts the Mecox bay has been owned by the couple since 1988, and is a haven where the early risers love to kayak, swim and play in their garden.

put a whole pig in, if you wanted to. It’s huge. We have 25 family members for 5 days for 4th of July every year, and we have to be able to cook and make sure we have enough space for everything. Carmen’s collections have become some of the most sought after among fashionistas of all shapes and sizes, and his designs have graced the frame of numerous celebs including Beyonce. But, Mr. Marc Valvo has his eye on adding actress Kate Blanchett to that list. The home recently served as the setting of a video shoot in preparation for the Carmen Marc Valvo New York Fashion Week runway show, which is always a coveted ticket. The beauty of the landscape provided inspiration for the line, which Carmen described as “kind of like barefoot on the beach, it’s very laid back and carefree- a sophisticated, dressed down elegance”.
C&C: Every part of the house is beautiful, we sit on the terrace outside of the pool house, which is elevated, and we have our lunches there usually, and it’s the same view that we fell in love with when we first saw the house. Every part of this house has a very unique quality. We love it. Because we are so close to the water, we couldn’t change the footprints, we were allowed to extend the kitchen, ever so slightly. It still has the same bones and ceiling as an old salt box, but with a few gables added and a few columns, a larger porch. It’s like a tiny jewel box - that’s what we call it - the greenhouse, the shade garden, the deck, the pool, the bay - it’s very, very magical.
Chris and Carmen regularly entertain at the home, hosting some charity events, but mostly family and close friends. As in all of the couple’s residences, the Bridgehampton home’s central hub is the kitchen, where guests are warmly welcomed and experience the culinary creations of the self described “chef and sous chef”. C&C: The chef’s kitchen is amazing, it’s very easy to cook in there, and it’s very well planned. We had the kitchen re-done and we ended up with 2 of everything basically, 2 freezers, 2 dishwashers, 2 sinks, 3 refrigerators, 4 ovens and 6 burners on a Viking stove, and a grill that you can basically
Prime examples of the adage “to whom much is given…”, Chris and Carmen espouse the tenet of giving back. Having survived colon cancer, Carmen is particularly committed to increasing awareness about the issue, but supports many philanthropic causes. CMV: The fashion industry to start off with, has always been very involved with women’s health issues, especially breast cancer, because it’s something that touches our customers so nearly and dearly, and it’s something that we see, and so as a fashion designer, doing exclusive collections to raise money for breast cancer research has always been important to me – my dad was
doctor, my mom was a nurse. “I was supposed to be a plastic surgeon…but that kind of needle and thread work was not in my DNA,” joked Carmen. (Ironically, Chris also initially planned to become a doctor.) I came out of the “cancer closet” through the help of Katie Couric. That was really hard for me, because I wasn’t expecting to share the story, but it was probably one of the most uplifting things I’ve ever done. It’s not breast cancer, it’s not colon cancer, it’s health in general. If we do research or funding for one, we may ultimately find the cure for another. Anything we can do to raise funds and awareness is beneficial to all humanity, and so it has really become one of my life’s goals. Education and conversation will ultimately allow us to win the battle. Travel aficionados, Chris Knaust and Carmen Marc Valvo have journeyed the world – Africa, Bora Bora, the Maldives – but always prefer to shelter at home, whether it be in Central America, Europe or New York. Their beautiful Bridgehampton home is a testament to their mutual love, respect and admiration for quality, craftsmanship, exquisite design, and above all, each other.

TED OWEN
Leads campaign for Inclusion of esports to paris 2024 olympics By Lillian langtry
T
ed Owen, the father of eSports, is close to seeing video gaming in the Olympics. Among the trailblazers of this multibillion dollar industry, Owen has been working toward this moment for two decades, with outlets like Bloomberg.com recognizing him as “a pioneer of the video gaming industry.” The potential introduction of eSports offers the Olympic Movement potential to fulfill its own Charter that “the practice of sport is a human right”. Whilst many Olympic sports favor young athletes who spend a lifetime preparing with a specialist regime in a national athletic organization, eSports offers a potential democratization and broader participation in being short-listed to participate. PlayAPI’s Ted Owen emphasized that, “whilst traditional athletic events may involve at most several hundred athletes being shortlisted for a particular event, eSports could potentially involve millions of individuals competing for a spot on their 2024 eSports national Olympic team”. Between 1993 and 2017, serial entrepreneur Owen initially financed several early stage companies in the video game industry such as 3DO and Spectrum Holobyte which gave an understanding of the complexities of the industry. Owen launched several groundbreaking ventures. Game Dealer (which became UGO) and Professional Interactive Entertainment which became Global Gaming League (GGL), the World’s first professional online gaming community. Among GGL’s achievements was to incorporate an eSports event into The Gravity Games and broadcast play-by-play coverage of the eSports scene and community through GGL’s media division, Epileptic Gaming (a precursor to Twitch), all aimed at making e-sports more accessible. As CEO, Owen made a name for himself leading to his latest endeavor - PlayAPI – which has the capability to create and maintain fair play between global eSports participants.
to the Olympics began over a decade ago when he had talks with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and then the Chinese government to introduce eSports to the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. Global Gaming League even held an Exhibition event prior to the Games. Although the idea was slow to catchon, the rapid rise in competitive gaming and popularity of eSports (some 680m streams of video games were watched in the past year alone), led officials on reflection to give credence to what Owen has been suggesting all along.

Olympics the ability to break new ground in becoming a truly global phenomenon in 2024. Handled correctly, eSports can provide a truly global, fair platform for everyone to compete in – what more could the IOC and Paris hope for in meeting the aspirations of the Olympic Charter ?” Owen’s influence on the largest entertainment form in the world both predicted and contributed to what is now the largest sport in the world: e-sports. He has again positioned himself as an entrepreneur to watch now and in the years leading up to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

JORDAN FINE DIAMONDS Argyle Pink Diamond Mine By Bennett Marcus
comes with a certificate from the mine affirming its authenticity. Diamonds from Argyle are old. “You won’t find any fossils in the ore that they use to extract the diamonds,” Fine says. “The diamonds are over a billion years old. That’s before life existed.” Over the years, he has acquired a number of notable pink diamonds from this mine, including the 2.37ct Dauphine, the largest red diamond known to originate from one of their exclusive tender sales.
Natural Color Diamond Association Fine has been an active board member of the Natural Color Diamond Association since 2006, and has served as president.

P
ink diamonds are very rare, representing only 1/10th of one percent of all the diamonds that come out of the ground. Pinks can go for $25,000 to $40,000 wholesale. In comparison, brown diamonds may cost a few thousand dollars per carat. “That’s the kind of pricing that pinks can fetch,” says Jordan Fine, one of the world’s foremost experts on natural color diamonds, and president of JFINE, a boutique firm specializing in these precious stones. “It’s almost unheard of in the industry.” Pink diamonds command huge premiums at auction, including the “Pink Star” diamond that famously fetched over $70 million this year.
JFINE’s accessibly priced pink diamonds Now, JFINE has made the highest quality pink diamonds available at accessible price points. “Not everybody can spend $10 or $20 million on a stone, so in this collection we have pieces that start at $1,500 retail,” says Fine. “We really wanted to make pink diamonds something that everybody could afford and make a part of their lives.”
J. Lo’s color diamonds Consumers have become more aware of colored stones, in part because of celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, who received 6-carat pink diamond during

Responsibly mined in Australia JFINE’S color diamonds are not only beautiful and rare, they are also conflict-free, from Australia’s Argyle Diamond Mine, which produces 90% of the world’s pink diamonds. As an authorized Argyle partner, one of only a handful in the world, JFINE obtains its stones directly from them. “Provenance and social responsibility has been on consumers’ minds a lot, and the mine that we work with founded the Responsible Jewelry Council, and they’re in Australia, which means there’s not any conflict there,” Fine explains.

PETER THOMAS ROTH Skincare Mogul & Jeweler By Bennett Marcus

ery few people are lucky enough to be able to turn their avocation into a business, and Peter Thomas Roth has done it twice, first with his namesake skincare line, and more recently with his fine jewelry.
Skin-product junkie While working in his father’s jewelry factory after graduating from Wharton, Roth spent evenings toying with skincare formulas - because he had always been plagued with acne and oily skin problems.“If you have issues with your skin you totally are a skin-product junkie, because it’s on the top of the list,” Roth says. “I was always going to the dermatologist, I was always getting facials, I had very active acne, so I just dived into it.” It made for long days, and was like working two jobs at once, he says.
1993 , A skin care company is born In 1993, he launched Peter Thomas Roth Clinical Skin Care, which produces all its anti-aging and anti-acne products using the highest quality ingredients at its own facilities in the U.S. “I started with other people making the products and I wasn’t getting what I wanted,” Roth says. “So we opened our own lab, manufacturing facility, and distribution center.”
Growth: Spas, Sephora, QVC, Hilton Hotels It quickly became popular at day spas, followed by luxury spa hotels, some owned by Marriott. “About 19 years ago, this guy said, ‘We’re opening up all these stores in the United States, it’s going to be called Sephora, and we want your brand,’” Roth says. They took all of the products. “So we’ve been in every Sephora in the United States, all doors, from the beginning, and still are.” The mega retailer also carries Peter Thomas Roth products in its stores in Canada, Mexico, Southeast Asia, and China, and will soon be in Sephora outlets in Brazil. Later, QVC came along, as did the cosmetics chain Ulta. About six years ago, Hilton signed an exclusive deal with the company, and you’ll find its products in all Hilton Hotel rooms in 80 countries.

Instructional labels Roth was an innovator in labeling, the first to include information on what each product is for on each bottle and tube, in addition to listing the ingredients. “Before, most people relied on being sold to at a department store, where a person told you what to do,” he explains. “Which is really nice, except I never remembered what they told me. So I need to have it on the bottle.” This is now common practice throughout the industry.
Ribbon & Reed jewelry collection While running his ever-growing company, Roth spent his spare time at his father’s factory, dabbling in jewelry design. “Some people like to play golf
or tennis, or play cards, I don’t, so jewelry was my hobby.” His Ribbon & Reed collection, inspired by the Metropolitan Museum of art, where he spent many youthful hours, and where his father’s studio makes all the jewelry reproductions, debuted on QVC in 2016.In gold and silver, the line consists of classic, simple, modern pieces for women and men that will still look good in 20 years. “That was the goal, to just do clean and modern with a little kick of the past,” says Roth. “It’s for everybody. If someone gets it as a present as a teenager, they can still wear it in their 20s and 30s, and if someone is over 50, it looks great. It’s a nice, pretty, solid design. It took a long time to do that.” peterthomasroth.com

PRIMP & PAMPER October 2017 By Hillary Latos
As we head into fall and live in an Instagram world of immediate gratification, here are some of our favorite beauty fixes with lasting and immediate results.
TUTELA PLASTIC SURGERY Whether it’s cosmetic or reconstructive procedures, celebrity plastic surgeon, Dr. Tutela is an expert when it comes to facial rejuvenation. As we come off the heels of summer and head into fall, now is the perfect time for his three pronged approach for a fall refresher. “One of the big benefits of going to fall is getting out of the sun which is the best thing for your face. Now that we are in the fall, we are heading to peel season where you can be more aggressive with your skincare. My three pronged approach can rejuvenate your face to get every part of it in order.” says Dr. Tutela. The first part is aggressive skin care such as a laser peel with a retinol base. The next step is to use fillers that target areas with volume loss which cast shadows on different areas of your face such as your nasal labials or under your eyes in the tear trough. unning a bustling practice in the heart of New York City Dr. Sol Schwartzstein meets new faces on a daily basis. As a dentist specializing in cosmetics, implants and periodontics, and the founder of Central Park South Dental Arts, he aims to make sure everyone leaves with a bright and healthy smile. We caught him between patients to answer some questions about oral health, NYC and the real deal on flossing.
What do you love about dentistry and why did you choose this specialty? Dentistry is very satisfying, and this specialty is especially satisfying. If you don’t take good care of your gums, your teeth will be weak and compromised, but it’s much more vital than that - periodontal disease is also linked to other health issues such as heart disease.

It’s truly a magical place where time has stood still and we can observe the wonders and consummate power of nature first hand. The archipelago is comprised of numerous islands that each possess their own unique landscapes and vistas determined by the power of nature. Whether it’s a white, black or red sand beach, marked by dramatic coves or stunning geological formations, or an arid cliff, each island is different with unique and endemic inhabitants. The best way to explore the Galapagos Islands is on a cruise with Go Galapagos. The largest boutique expedition ship is the M/V Legend that can accommodate up to 100 guests. With three different decks they offer different areas for socializing or admiring the majestic vistas whether it’s soaking up rays by the pool or Jacuzzi or enjoying the comfortable lounge areas indoors. There are 52 outside cabins and 3 interior cabins with a variety of configurations to accommodate families or couples. The spacious balcony suites range from 237-290 square feet with a sitting area, panoramic
bay windows and a private balcony to soak in the balmy sea air. While the majority of the rooms are Junior suites which can convert to a triple and range from 161 square feet to 215 square feet offering panoramic windows to enjoy the magnificent views and can be interconnected for larger families. There are four different three to four day itineraries to choose from that be combined up to 14 days to get a comprehensive overview of the islands. The trips are divided into regions- North, West, South and East, and each day guests are treated to two different island adventures led by expert naturalist guides. In between land visits, guests can explore the fascinating marine life with two snorkeling tours per day as well. After a full day of exploring the region take the
time to enjoy the delicious international and Ecuadorian cuisine prepared daily. One of the highlights of the trip is the alfresco BBQ under the stars that is truly magical. For this shoot we explored the dramatic western region where each island provided a visually stunning backdrop. Black lava provides the smooth and unbroken surfaces with sculptural formations that form the basaltic landscape against the deep blue ocean on Santiago Island. While Puerto Egas forms deep pools and caves with emerald green waters populated with playful sea lions. Rabida is known as the red island with a rust colored sand beach bordered by rugged cliffs and small craters which were created by the oxidation from its initial formation. Home to colonies of sea lions and pelicans as well as flamingos who come to bask in the shallow salt lagoon. Isabela Island is the not only the largest island in the archipelago but one of the most beautiful. Its stunning landscape was formed by 6 active volcanoes and offers stunning cliffside views of the volcanic crater and valley below. The youngest island, Fernandina is perceived as a land without time where land iguanas were thought to have evolved into marine iguanas and flightless cormorants lost their ability to fly because it wasn’t need in this environment, thus giving a first hand glimpse to the power of evolution. The best way to get to the Galapagos Islands from the U.S. is via JetBlue Airways which offers daily direct flights from Fort Lauderdale Hollywood Airport to Quito Airport. JetBlue will serve the FLL-UIO route with a 150-seat Airbus A320. JetBlue Flight 2851 will leave Fort Lauderdale daily at 7 p.m. and arrive in Quito at 10:34 p.m., all times local. Flight 2850 from Quito to Fort Lauderdale will leave at 11:59 p.m. and arrive at FLL at 5:17 a.m. “The fact that JetBlue has decided to fly here after they’re already flying into Colombia and Lima, Peru, is a huge win for us and a major vote of confidence,” said Andrew O’Brian, CEO of Corporación Quiport, the airport’s operating consortium. “Not just for the country of Ecuador and the city of Quito, but for the airport itself. Because when JetBlue steps in and starts to fly, everybody takes notice.” From Quito you can catch a regional carrier to either Baltra or San Cristobal to reach the Go Galapagos cruise ship. RM: As an entrepreneur, what motivates you the most? DJ: I think because the times are changing so fast it’s almost like opening a cracker jack box. I’m learning new techniques on how to operate and grow businesses and utilize technology which is exciting. The business has changed since I started 25- 30 years ago, it’s not the same. Though the fundamentals are the same, the form of delivery, production, advertising and marketing is different as we know it. I find it fascinating to bring the fundamentals of what I know to the current day and age. RM: How do you decide which project to take on and to champion? DJ: I have to have a really strong passion about the project and like the person that I’m partnering with. Today a lot of my products such as a shark company or a type of curriculum include innovation or empowerment. I’m just this kind of lightening rod now, because I do so many things like speaking to many corporations or starring on Shark Tank. If I see a product I can sink my teeth into or I’m actually obsessed with or it’s worth my time, money and resources then I will invest. RM: What do you think was your best investment from Shark Tank? DJ: One of the deals I’m extremely happy about was the Bombas socks deal. These young men came in and were only making a couple thousand dollars per year and now they’re on track to do $50 million this year. But what makes this company so great to be a part of is that every sock that they sell they give a pair of socks to a homeless shelter because they know that the main challenge the homeless face is the lack of care for their feet. That’s why I love the company so much. RM. Were there any deals that you felt were ‘the one that got away’? DJ. No, fortunately we don’t feel like that because we try to pair the perfect shark with the perfect product and partner to help run it. So we never really feel like that with any of the investments.

RM. How do you balance launching your new businesses in conjunction with what you’re doing with Shark Tank? DJ. This is a challenge we face because Shark Tank takes a lot out of us and we have to limit the amount of businesses we can launch. What I personally try to do is launch one new business every 3 years because my inventory and time is all I really have to move around. On Shark Tank we really have

to roll up our sleeves and work with these companies. Sometimes people just need the money to grow and will run on their own business, but the ones in the middle need help and take up a good amount of time so we need to figure out how the teams will work together. RM: How did you come about the concept of Blueprint + Co? DJ: The Blueprint + Co concept came about as a shared workspace for many Shark Tank companies that needed help as well as some of my other fellow investors and established companies who could all work in the same space. One of the members is Ashley Stewart, who has a large business with 100 people based out in Secaucus, New Jersey. They want to attract young talent who want to work in the city without having to travel to Secaucus, so they have a couple of desks there. Also the CEO over there and several other CEOs love to come into the blueprint space where they can see and meet with other CEOs on the same level and we can figure out ways to collaborate together.
putting out there, because if you do it because you want money or fame you’re going to be miserable and you’re going to fail at it. Or if you finally get the money you spend it all right away because you have been waiting so long for it. Financial intelligence is key. It has nothing to do with massive amounts of business but how you are operating with every dollar that you have. You don’t need a lot of money in the early stages, pop culture ingrained in us ‘to make money you have to have money.’ But it’s really the opposite, you have to build a community and then money helps you grow the business but it doesn’t start the foundation of the business. I’ve learned this through personal experience which is the basis for my book, The Power of Broke, where I can tell people how to grow a business.
RM: What is your latest project? DJ: I created Daymond on Demand which is an interactive curriculum for entrepreneurs so they won’t make the same mistakes I did. As entrepreneurs, we have a lot of hurdles we have to overcome when we are first starting out and now this can be accessed by the world at Daymondondemand.com
RM: The Power of Broke became a New York Times Best seller and now you’re in the process of writing another book- Rise and Grind? Tell me a little bit about your message. DJ: I didn’t think people were going to relate to The Power of Broke because I thought people would read the title and think ‘I don’t want to read about when he was broke.’ The message there was that you don’t need money to make money, 65% of many successful people in the world are self-made and were broke. Even 65% of athletes or lottery winners become broke within 3 years. Rise and Grind is about getting granular on the theory about the methods and tactics that I need to do every single day to reach my goal. I studied 15 well known or successful people to figure out what do they do every single day for the first 90 minutes or the last 90 minutes, what are the methods they’ve either forgotten or carried through since they were young which they go back to that made them successful. I’m trying to create blueprints on these people with their exact ways to make themselves better. This launches in January 2018.
RM: You have had a colorful life journey. What were some of the biggest life lessons you have learned? DJ: Number one you have to be extremely passionate and love the company, brand or product you’re
RM: You were a dyslexic that didn’t attend college, what does it mean to you to have such an overwhelming response to your books? DJ: It’s an honor because there are too many of us
RM: How has this been received? DJ: It has been absolutely amazing. In the five months since its launch, we now have a great amount of people there and I’ve seen many collaborative efforts going on between the fellow shark companies based there and I’m very proud of the product.
that are self-doubting. I love the fact that after people read my book they say if he can do it, I can do it. I had absolutely zero, so there were no excuses, as long as I had my health I can do it. Too many people judge their blooper reels against other’s sizzle reels on Instagram and think people wake up beautiful, in shape and educated, and it’s not really reality. When they read about me and all of my flaws they can feel empowered to become accomplished and I want them to share that with everyone they know. RM: How did you find out you had cancer? DJ: I had an executive physical at UCLA which is a very extreme and extensive checkup and they found a nodule on my thyroid. They took a biopsy and we took it out. When they conducted some tests on it they found out it was a stage 2 cancer. The most shocking thing about this was that I had physicals done every year and I realized this was a very touchy subject because people don’t want to think about their health and are afraid they may find out something is wrong. I wanted to share the importance of early detection which is what saved me, and I was able to avoid massive complications. Because of it I am able to go on and enjoy my life to be here for my kids. I want to encourage people to go and get mammograms, pap smears, endoscopies, or colonoscopies to see if they are ok or need to fix something. I will have to monitor this for the rest of my life but this is part of the process and my number one project. I think entrepreneurs don’t take care of themselves enough. But you can’t have success if you don’t have your health. RM: If there was a dream project to become involved in what would it be? DJ: It would have to be a solution to something that would change people’s lives. Like stopping human trafficking or providing clean water to all.

Meet New York City’s Feng Shui Master Pun-Yin:
HOW FENG SHUI CHANGE YOUR LIFE By Tash Bazika
C
hannel your inner spirit to guide you on a metaphysical journey to find the right balance in your life. Feng Shui is an ancient art and science developed over 5,000 years ago in China. It is a complex body of knowledge that teaches how to balance the energies in your mind and in any given space-be it at home, in the office or garden, in order to assure good fortune to those who inhibit the space. Feng means wind and Shui means water, which in the Chinese culture is associated with a balanced flow and good luck. According to Feng Shui Master Pun-Yin, people are emotionally exhausted and need to start healing their own energy by learning to embrace Thanksgiving with an attitude of acceptance and appreciation of one another. In the spirit of coexisting peacefully, it would be a good idea to invite family members to start collecting objects from nature to decorate the environment, as these objects carry a zen and healing vibration.

A person who is stubborn or intense and finds it difficult to relax could use a touch of the blue representing the Water Element in Feng Shui to alleviate the uptight energy. Based on the Feng Shui energy cycle, people should avoid strong patterns or colors until February 2019 to help stay calm. Wardrobe selections for a meeting or interview using the Yin (gentle) or Yang (strong) color and pattern could help achieve a specific goal based on the energy projection. Feng Shui exists in a space and in a person according to the Five Elements theory because there is an energy field in everything. Those who want to project power and strength could signal that by wearing red which represents the Fire Element. On the contrary, wearing pastel colors and soft tones like blue and khaki invites interaction.

In a world focused on materialism, Feng Shui inspires us to appreciate the balance in us and in nature because it is good karma. This is why if the affluent people and their children could participate in a charity that services the needy, it could help them put things into prospective and perhaps appreciate what they have even more.

LIVING LARGE WITH THE BMW 7 SERIES By JOSH ESTRIN
T
he new 7-series from BMW continues to dexterously navigate the fine line between sport and full-sized luxury. It is the astonishing ability to appropriately maneuver with the agility of a sports car without sacrificing comfort that remains a a hallmark of this series.
What do the experts have to say? Robert Schiano a Senior Client Advisor with BMW for over 30 years explains that, “The 7-series is the most innovative vehicle in its class, offering an unparalleled experience for both drivers and passengers through technology, comfort, and engineering that sets the standard for the future of elite travel while charging into an unimaginable realm of performance.”
Choosing the right 7-series for you: 2018 offers a host of options, including the 740i and 750i, a plug-in hybrid (740e), or two high-end, high-performance versions (Alpina B7 and M760i) with each offering unique engine and horsepower ratings, and either standard or all-wheel drive. The BMW 750i, reflects the perfect marriage of performance and opulence without the hefty price tag of the Alpina B7 and M760i editions. With a twin-turbocharged V8 engine, it meets and exceeds the expectations of those who have a “need for speed” while answering the battle cry of those consumers seeking a level of luxury that reflects success and a refined eye for aesthetics.
BMW 7 Series 740i Both the 740i and the all-wheel-drive 740i xDrive have much to offer, including what is hiding under the hood. These models do not disappoint with their 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine and a 320-horsepower rating. Luxury is not an after-

BMW 7 Series 750i The BMW 750i is available in both a rear-wheeldrive sedan or the all-wheel-drive 750i xDrive. The biggest difference between these “siblings” comes in the form of horsepower. Enjoy options? The 20-way adjustable front seats allow one to enjoy the perfect custom ride.

FINE DINING
THE GREAT ITALIAN TRILOGY Fall Dining at Il Gattopardo, The Leopard at des Artistes & Mozzarella & Vino By Peter Elston @ Il Gattopardo
T
he Godfather movies are considered by many to be the greatest Italian trilogy of all time. However, over the past few years, there is only another Italian trilogy that stands above the rest in New York City’s dining scene; Il Gattopardo, The Leopard at des Artistes, and Mozzarella & Vino. These three restaurants set the standard for fine Italian dining, with the only debate being whose is everyone’s favorite of the three. Fall is the perfect season for you to take a stroll down to these splendid establishments and make up your own mind. The Il Gattopardo family of restaurants is owned by husbandand-wife team Gianfranco and Paula Bolla Sorrentino, with Partner Chef Vito Gnazzo. Originally from Naples, Italy, Gianfranco Sorrentino carries over 40 years of experience in restaurant management from the Quisitana Hotel in Capri, Dorchester Hotel in London, Four Seasons Hotel in Tokyo, Bice restaurant in New York, Sette MoMA restaurant at the Museum of Modern Art of New York, and Union Bar & Grill in Great Barrington, MA. In September 2001 he opened Il Gattopardo, just across from MoMA, along with his wife Paula Bolla-Sorrentino, and his talented Executive Chef Vito Gnazzo. In 2011, the Sorrentinos also embraced one of the most rewarding journeys of their careers, the rebirth of the restaurant in the landmarked Hotel des Artistes – The Leopard at des Artistes.

PART I:
IL GATTOPARDO Fine dining icon Il Gattopardo opened in 2001, and still attracts a loyal clientele who come for both the authentic southern Italian cuisine and the warm, Italian hospitality. Il Gattopardo is located in the historically landmarked Rockefeller Townhouses at 13-15 West 54th Street. Aside from the sleek, modern main dining room, the restaurant also boasts a beautiful, lushly-planted 8-story Atrium, in which a wide range of private events are held. Il Gattopardo serves traditional Southern Italian comfort food that has been adapted for the contemporary palate without compromising the authenticity of the cuisine, which became a must to its loyal upscale New Yorker clientele. 212-246-0412 | ilgattopardonyc.com

THE LEOPARD AT DES ARTISTES Five years ago, in the historically landmarked Hotel des Artistes at 1 West 67th Street, on a beautiful, tree-lined block between Central Park and Lincoln Center, Gianfranco Sorrentino and his wife Paula Bolla Sorrentino, along with Partner Chef Vito Gnazzo, opened The Leopard at des Artistes. The Leopard at des Artistes boasts a diverse menu that finds its roots in the area once known as The Kingdom of Two Sicilies of the mid-1800s, and the culinary traditions of Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, Apulia, Sardinia, and of course, Sicily. The menu also features dishes traditionally found in regions outside of southern Italy, such as Lazio and Umbria.

Mozzarella & Vino, located at the former Il Gattopardo space, at 33 west 54th Street - as you may know, Il Gattopardo moved to the new location, on the same block at number 13 West. Their talented Chef Vito Gnazzo is responsible for the mouthwatering menu that reflects the simplicity of authentic Italian ingredients, with a heavy emphasis on the Mozzarella di bufala Campania, Italian cheeses and affettati. Based mostly on classic Italian antipasti, such as arancini, panzarotti, and
mozzarella rolls, they also serve a wonderful selection of panini , soups, salads, and of course mozzarella on all shapes and combinations ‌ even on desserts. Their enoteca style bar focuses on showcasing rather smaller family estates and independent Italian winemakers. They proudly share beloved wines, definitely not mainstream, wines that translates history, quality and good value. A variety of by the glass is offered, as well as by the bottle. Their selection greatly varies due to constant new discoveries. Mozzarella & Vino is located on 33 West 54th Street. 646-692-8849 | mozzarellaevino.com

DINING OUT By Tash Bazika
NICKEL & DINER nickelanddiner.com Inspired by nostalgia from the diners of yesteryear but combined with sleek contemporary design and upgraded diner classics with a new addition of healthy food options and there you have Nolita’s Nickel and Diner which is open from breakfast through dinner. Modeled after the five-and-dime luncheonettes of mid-century New York, the space’s teal vinyl booths, polished countertops and tasteful décor convey a sense of nostalgia. Chef James Friedburg is a classical food genius. He manages to keep the heart and soul of a classic dish—taking care not to tarnish its essence, yet serves a splendid looking plate setting up the perfect foodie shot for instagram. He created artful spins on classics with an Asian fusion flair such as Hamachi tartare, tempura fried chicken with chili sauce, crab fettuccini with yuzu, shisito, and finger lime or roasted Icelandic cod with coconut and macadamia nuts. To top it off, quirky cocktails are delightfully more satisfying than a milkshake. Opt in for The Drive By with gin, lemon, honey thyme syrup and soda, or the Irish Cold Brew with whiskey, cold brew and cream is the ultimate substitution for coffee. - 1 Howard Street NYC • 646.870.6100
OLD MONK oldmonknyc.com Old Monk is the newest concept located in the heart of the East Village from restaurateur Sushil Malhotra and Executive Chef Navjot Arora. A seasoned culinary veteran Malhotra helmed the kitchen at Akbar and Dawat as well as launching the Café Spice Restaurant Group in Westchester. A twist on traditional Indian food, menu highlights at Old Monk include house-baked Goat Cheese Naan with pumpkin and melon seeds;Wild Rice Jhaal Moori with wasabi peas, tamarind and mint; Anjeer Kofta – tender fig and paneer dumplings in a saffron sauce; andTellicherry Pepper Beef featuring flank steak, peppercorn jus and curry leaves. Old Monk Rum Lamb Chops are marinated in the iconic Indian dark rum and grilled on the tandoor. Adding to the convivial vibe, a special section on the menu, “You’re in Good Hands,” features a family-style, four-course feast. Seasonal ingredients are carefully sourced from NYC’s greenmarkets and spices are ground in-house. To ensure Old Monk’s design is as bold as the food, Malhotra and Arora brought on Junoon designer Tarik Currimbhoy to create this 55-seat restaurant. To blend with the gritty yet trendy Alphabet City neighborhood the walls are adorned with vibrant photographs depicting monks in the modern world, talking on cell phones and snapping photos. Traditional colored scarves with Sanskrit script hang from the walls and the bar alcove is painted in saffron hues of a monk’s robe. The front bar, decked in polished copper, is dotted with four champagne cork bar stools. A nod to the restaurant’s namesake, additional décor features such as dark walnut liquor barrels, walnut table tops, filament bulbs hung from the stamped copper metal ceiling and antique mirrors add to the restaurant’s warmth, yet still match the contemporary neighborhood ambiance. - 175 Avenue B, NYC • 646.559.2922
VAGO RESTAURANT vagorestaurant.com It’s all in the name. Owners Victoria Guan and Tony Rustja were inspired by the word meaning ‘beauty’ in old Latin and believe ‘Vago’ is their mission. That beauty is showcased in the restaurant’s food, which is made with love and served artistically. The dishes at Vago are inspired by the Mediterranean and European way of life. The essence of beauty extends into the design of Vago. With white brick walls and ceilings brightened by perfect ambiant lighting, the vibe is elegant and comforting. To enhance the scene, the walls behind the bar are neatly lined with bottles of wines from all ends of Europe. Floor to ceiling windows in front also shine natural light within the dining room. The Mediterranean and European inspired menu is divided into classic meat, seafood, and pasta entrees. The menu features dishes such as Chicken Rollatini, stuffed with spinach, mozzarella, sundried tomatoes in mushroom sauce; Rigatoni with eggplant, fresh home-made tomato sauce, basil and dry ricotta cheese; and Oratta Del Mediterraneo, a grilled whole Mediterranean sea bream. Additionally, Vago offers brunch every Saturday and Sunday, featuring dishes like Smoked Salmon Benedict, Lobster Benedict and delicious farm-fresh egg omelettes. As the perfect end to every meal, Vago offers two mouth watering desserts, a Chocolate Caramel Crunch Cake and The Grandmother Cake, complete with decadent pastry cream with a hint of lemon on a base of short-crust pastry covered with pine nuts, almonds and powdered sugar. - 509 Third Ave, NYC • 646.559.0609

OKA oka.nyc Chef John McCarthy brings his expertly crafted Japanese technique to the streets of New York City, in particular Murray Hill. Owner of The Crimson Sparrow in Hudson, NY, Chef McCarthy introduced Oka, an elegant established restaurant offering his interpretation of Japanese Izakaya viewed through a New York lens. The restaurant merges elements of the Izakaya dining experience with a familiar approach for diners, inspired by time spent traveling, working, eating and cooking in Japan. Walking past this alluring place is near impossible with the crisp white bricks catching the corner of your eye and the large glass façade inviting you in as you can see the warmth from the outside. It’s elegant, chic and sleek design is what you would expect of a Japanese restaurant, yet completely different as the subtlety is lost in the sharpness of the room. The elongated bar is accompanied by industrial metal chairs, which contrast swiftly with the shades of wood. McCarthy’s fare includes products sourced from several upstate farms, and some dishes will fluctuate based on seasons. Guests can expect to dive into composed plates from the cold or hot section. Some of the cold dishes include Salmon Roe, yeasted sunchoke puree with chips or opt in for the delicate Japanese potato salad decorated with edible flowers and a crisp made from prosciutto. As we head into fall, the hot dishes are the perfect way to warm you up inside out with the Udon, Dashi with a soft egg or the grilled squid in a pool of black garlic oil and kewpie mayo. As for the beverage menu, McCarthy has carefully curated a fabulous selection of Sake’s from Hanjoza, Ginjo and Junmai to sparkling wines, beers and ciders and house cocktails such as the Hanami which consists of champagne, St.Germain, citrus and is topped with a delicate flower. - 439 Third Avenue, NYC • 929.367.8607
SPUNTINO BAR spuntinobarnyc.com Spuntino Wine Bar is the Upper West Side’s latest Mediterranean gem. Executive chef Vincent Chirico who worked under Jean Georges and Daniel has created a carefully curated selection of shared, delicate, and refined contemporary Mediterranean dishes that are meant to be shared. Whether you sit alfresco admiring the vibrant scene of Amsterdam Avenue or inside the cozy dining room replete with exposed brick and reclaimed wood walls and dimly lit tables, the charming atmosphere is the perfect backdrop to enjoy Chirico’s seasonal dishes. The menu is divided into sections such as Crudo, Vegetable, Land and Sea. Be sure to try one from each such as the refreshing Hamachi resting atop a bed of avocado, cucumber and flavored by fresno and chili as well as the clams sautéed with black garlic, charred octopus with pesto or the a creamy burrata ravioli from the cheese section. The craft cocktail menu features re-interpreted classics with seasonal ingredients—like the Watermelon Thai Basil Martini or the spicy Mezcal Sunrise - 429 Amsterdam Ave, NYC
ISOLA isolany.com In the language of its original inhabitants, Shelter Island meant “an island protected by islands.” It lies between the North and South Forks of Long Island and is a marvel to see. It is no wonder Brad Kwiatkowski, Shelter island lover and Italian food connoisseur decided to open up his charming Italian restaurant Isola, which is Italian for island that will remain open year round. Executive Chef Nathan Seth brings 17 years of cooking experience to the position, with a dollop of his personal culinary vision. Isola represents the marriage of modern Italian cuisine and seasonal dishes featuring the freshest ingredients the East End has to offer, providing guests a true taste of Shelter Island living, with a Mediterranean flair. The 140 seat restaurant features indoor and outdoor seating, a traditional bar and an open air pizza kitchen overlooking the dining room. Guests can choose to dine in the main dining room, side patio, sprawling bar or on the scenic front porch, which overlooks the historic Shelter Island heights district. The design beams with simplicity and elegance, perfect for its location and history. Wood plays a big part in the interior and on the exterior crisp white paint coincides with the wooden furniture for a sophisticated look. Guests can expect to indulge in classics like the mouthwatering slow cooked Mediterranean fish soup brimming with local catch, a thin crust Margherita pizza or organic chicken parmigiana. From the Primi section, Burrata Caprese is a crowd pleaser or the Kobe meatballs is the perfect companion for a quiet night. As for the ever important beverages, Isola’s wine list presents the best of Long Island’s wine country, accompanied by their favorite European vintages. The cocktail menu is curated to complement not only the cuisine, but Shelter Island’s relaxed and inspiring atmosphere. - 15 Grand Avenue, Shelter Island Heights • 631.749.9036

NOT JUST SUSHI BEYOND SUSHI’S Vegan Cuisine By Corinne O’Connor
B
eyond Sushi is about to be your new go-to spot to grab some good eats especially with locations all around New York City. The all vegan menu at Beyond Sushi is unlike any other providing a fusion of both Asian and Mediterranean cuisine. Chef Guy Vaknin is an extremely talented chef who was actually featured on season 10 of Hell’s Kitchen after studying at the Institute of Culinary Education in Manhattan. In fact a lot of Vaknin’s work ethic stems from his time spent in the Israeli Defense Force before moving to New York in 2005. The other part of Beyond Sushi’s beautiful creation comes from his wife Tali Vaknin. The two met during their time working for Vaknin’s father at his Kosher catering company. Tali has been a huge help in making sure the business runs smoothly. Not only have they had five restaurants open thus far, but plan to open two in the coming year and hope to eventually add locations on the West Coast. Talk about a power couple! The menu is inspired by both their backgrounds. Chef Vaknin developed a lot of inspiration and influence by cooking for his mom and sister as he grew up. As well as being Israeli with Moroccan parents there was so much room for many flavors to arise. Tali Vaknin grew up as a vegetarian and hence took a unique twist on the sushi roll. The two have formed a healthy, delicious and unique menu to satisfy any palate. Serving items such as sushi, noodles, soups, salads and more there’s something for people of any age. A couple of Tali’s favorites are the badge dumplings. These dumplings are filled with charred cabbage, onion, bell peppers, carrots and sesame oil topped with chili panko and cilantro with a ponzu sauce. Another favorite is the nutty buddy rice paper wrap. This wrap is filled with baby greens, soba noodles, jalapeno peanut butter, carrots, cashews, avocado, baked tofu and cilantro with a ponzu sauce. Are you salivating yet? As well as delicious food they also have witty menu names such as the Pickle Me sushi roll. This is made of six-grain rice, pickled burdock root, carrot pickled daikon, and avocado with a carrot ginger dressing. Every menu option is filed with so many nutritious ingredients as well as flavors you can’t go wrong with anything. Beyondsushinyc.com

The black-and-white checkered floor is the perfect consistent piece, which ties in well with the quirky accents and artistic portraits hanging on the wall. Los Angeles based graffiti artist, Alec Monopoly introduces a piece of himself in the ornamental space, much like other talented artists like Argentinian artist BNS who is renowned for pulling pop culture memes into a delirious burst of color and dry humor. In terms of food and beverage, LaMuse is not one to fall short for creativity with their offerings to customers. Guests can expect to indulge in snacks and plates such as Dora’s Deviled Eggs, with caviar, crab meat or lobster. In the tartines section, choose from avocado and chia with sea salt, pepper and honey or the butternut squash with ricotta cheese, which is a popular choice. A crowd-pleaser would have to be any of the Original CroSubs, or croissant sandwich. Options include the Italian Tuna

Avant Gallery and LaMuse Café is every artists muse, with inspiration hanging from wall to wall, any and all visitors will relinquish a side of themselves they may have never seen before. Also known as “Millionaires Row” this stretch of highway along the ocean is dotted with high-end resorts and residences away from the party crowds of Cabo. But for those seeking the nightlife and action of Cabo, there is a complementary quick shuttle service to their sister property on the marina which offers fine culinary options and thrilling boating excursions. The award-winning resort recognized for its authentic Mexican architecture and hacienda-style suites, welcomed the addition of the ‘El Encanto de la Hacienda’ to the property just last year. This

Serenity is easy to find with the best in holistic treatments, soothing colors, and a team of professionals on staff. There are over 20 unique treatments to choose from, as well as a workout facility, steam room, and Jacuzzi. If you have never tried a Temazcal (a round chamber with hot stones

Temazcal is an authentic Mexican treatment practiced for centuries in Mexican and Central American cultures. This ritual cleanses the physical and spiritual. Additionally, there are many signature treatments offered here so be sure to check out their full spa service menu. One of our favorites, the Hacienda Encantada Experience is the perfect antidote for a long flight. The treatment begins with their signature massage using a combination of techniques that include hot stone, hot towels, lomi lomi and shiatsu, among others. Then, a wonderful eye treatment designed to reduce the appearance of under-eye puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines is applied. It’s a must-try while staying at the resort. haciendaencantada.com

A TALE OF TWO VACATIONS By Meredith Bloomberg

f you just think of beaches when you think of the Dominican Republic, you are missing out on a great city and its heritage. My trip to the island was highlighted by both an amazing history of the up and coming Caribbean city of Santo Domingo, and the beautiful white sandy beaches of Punta Cana. My stay started at the JW Marriott, Trip Advisors 2017 Travelers’ Choice Awards as the Best Luxury City Hotel in the Americas, in the center
of the business district of Santo Domingo. The upscale brand is exactly as you would expect. A beautiful lobby with chic bar area which leads to the unforgettable glass floor balcony of the Vertygo 101 Lounge which is set 101 feet above Winston Churchill Avenue, which is quite the experience. There is a rooftop infinity pool, and full gym overlooking the skyline. There are fully equipped meeting facilities and grocery shopping services. Attentive associates eager to help wherever I turned. The rooms are luxuriously appointed. The marble bathrooms have a walk through shower to a soaker bathtub and a double vanity with a TV in the mirror.
the hotel. The mall offers luxury shopping for the affluent traveler.
A highlight of this hotel is The Winston Grill & Patio that serves international cuisine. Chef Alberto Martin was more than accommodating, serving a tasting menu that was absolutely delicious. So much so, that I had to go back for 2 more breakfasts and another dinner. When talking about the JW Marriott in Santo Domingo one must include the Blue Mall located directly below
If staying in the heart of the business district is not what quite what you are looking for, then a stay at the Renaissance may be more to your liking. A bit more traditional in the sense of a Carribean resort, view of the ocean and a large pool with lots of lounging options along with pool side dining. The Renaissance also has a casino for those looking for the excitement of some gambling action.

A must when visiting Santo Domingo is the Colonial Zone. It is where Columbus had decided to establish the first settlement in the New World for Spain. Most of the buildings date back to the early 16th century, the earliest from 1502. “The First Tavern of the America’s”, Pat’e Palo, was established in 1505. This was a hangout for the pirates of the time, now a must go-to for a refreshing El Presidente. There is the first palace of the governor of the New World, which still stands although it was burned out by warring countries long ago. Now mostly furnished with reproductions, it gives great insight to what life was like in the New World during the 16th Century. The Colonial Zone is also known for its nightlife and restaurants. I had a traditional Dominican lunch at Jalao, which included mofongo, a very tasty dish with a special place in the hearts and stomachs of the Dominicans made of flavored mashed plantains, garlic, oil and pork rind. A must when there is to have dinner at Buche’Perico, which is situated in one of the older remaining residences. The dining area is in the actual backyard also dating back to the 1500’s which is absolutely magical….. Whether you are a history buff, or not, this is an amazing place. For the nature lovers there is Tres Ojos National Park. It is almost as if you are step-
ping into a lost world located in the center of a large city. A group of interconnected limestone caves with crystal clear blue water lagoons is only a short car ride from the Colonial Zone. The second half of my trip was spent in beautiful Punta Cana, a place of baby powder beaches and light aqua waters. Just minutes from the airport, my home while there was the Westin Resort. Everything one would expect from a 5-star beachfront resort. The hotel’s wellness programs are based on what the brand calls its “six pillars.” Rest Well, Eat Well, Move Well, Feel Good, Work Well, and Play Well. The hotel provides dishes with SuperFoodsRX . Guests also have access to a full gym. For the running enthusiast, a running tour is provided with routes of up to 3.66 miles long situated within the Punta Cana Resort and Club. Multiple pools with cabanas, a beach front restaurant with breathtaking views, beach lounges with friendly food and beverage service. The Westin Resort is part of the Punta Cana Resort and Club. This is home to two golf courses, 45-hole “Los Corales” and “La Cana”, the La Cana Beach Club and Six Senses Spa, all of which are at your disposal while staying at the Westin. The “Los Corales” golf course will be hosting its first PGA tour in March of 2018. This is the first PGA event in the Dominican Republic. Other accommodations at Punta
Cana are the Tortuga Bay Resort, which is under renovations and the Four Points, by Punta Cana Village. For the ultimate in privacy and luxury, there are private residences, complete with staff and service which are available for rent. Besides relaxing by the ocean, there were a few highlights to be noted. The “Los Corales” Golf course is a must if you play the game. Overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the course is both challenging and breathtaking. The Six Senses Spa has everything needed to help you relax and reset. This upscale spa offers an array of treatment rooms, including one directly on the beach, and peaceful settings in which you can enjoy the rejuvenating therapies of their international team. The spa also offers in room treatments for the ultimate in relaxation and convenience. For the tennis enthusiast, the Oscar de la Renta Tennis Center has 13 tennis courts, a pro shop, a full gym and a patio with snacks and drinks which is available to all hotel guests. For the nature lover there is The “Ojos Indígenas” Ecological Park and Reserve, a 1,500-acre private reserve owned and maintained by the Grupo Punta Cana Foundation. The Ecological Reserve is comprised of a network of trails that lead to 12 freshwater lagoons and provides habitat for an abundance of birds, reptiles, insects, and other local flora and fauna. Walking the trails and swimming in the lagoons is a fun way to spend time with or without the family. The dining experiences while in Punta Cana are also top notch. For beachside dining, Playa Blanca offers a romantic setting with ocean views while La Yolo is a AAA three diamond restaurant that perches on the sea at the Punta Cana Resort & Club Marina, with magnificent views of the sparkling turquoise waters. The Grill Restaurant at the La Cana Golf and Beach Club is the perfect setting for a relaxing meal on the beach. Chef Santiago Salamanca served us a tasting menu that was delicious and never ending. Every dish he served was mouth watertingly delicious. Both Punta Cana and Santo Domingo have so much to offer for visitors to the Dominican Republic. And although Punta Cana is more of a traditional Caribbean vacation, there is so much more to be seen in the rich history of this island, that one would be amiss to pass it by.

EDEN’S UNINTENDED HEIRS By Rory Winston
“
Drive slow, sit low,” quipped Jerry Seinfeld while describing the habits of Jewish senior citizens in Florida. But there’s another Florida. Not the Florida of retired businessmen, Cuban clubs, alligator wrestlers or parrot jungles. A different Florida – one wherein Europe’s aspiration had met an untamed but bountiful land. Before there was a United States, a royal British invasion, a Huguenot colony or even buccaneers, one particular group of seafaring zealots had landed on our feral and bountiful shores. While to the indigenous tribes this marked the beginning of the end, to their nemesis, this was the onset of the ‘plunder years,’ an era of conquest and exploitation. These were the days of the Conquistadors – merciless marauders murdering in the name of a “merciful god.” Intent on expanding
their realm and coffers, the Spanish crown sponsored these expeditions. And so they financed Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, a grief-stricken Conquistador in search of his son. Having set sail for the same region some time earlier, Menéndez’s son hadn’t been heard from in months. Though presumed shipwrecked and, in all likelihood, dead, Menéndez was insistent. He intended to bring his boy home alive. After crossing the ocean and scouring Florida’s Atlantic coastline, a desperate Menéndez came to a decision: since he couldn’t find his son, he would build him a world worth returning to, a dream made of wood and stone, an elaborate Eden he believed would one day house generations of Spaniards. And so Menéndez founded St.
Augustine – a city destined to become the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European origin in the US. Named after a saint who rebooted Christianity when it was on the wane, St. Augustine represented Old World faith and New World ambition. It’s no coincidence that the saint it was named after was, incidentally, also the very same ideologue who came up with the concept of a ‘just war’ –a holy war capable of justifying all sorts of atrocities. To understand Menéndez’s popup paradise (or Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth, for that matter), it’s important to see what they had seen: lush terrains of avocado-green grass nuzzling up against pristine beaches; tilting palm trees hugging the shore like enormous fluttering eyelashes

of a turquoise eyed sea. Just south of St. Augustine, this is still what the northeastern coast of Florida looks like. Here, the smoothly oiled shoulder of a wave rises from a sun-soaked sea and the refracted light becomes too much for one’s eyes to bear. And so, like many who had come before me, I averted my gaze from the shimmering waves and look inland. As my sight cleared, what I saw before me had the appearance of a mirage: an oasis with a palace at its center, an Eden known as Hammock Beach Resort. Like a landscape found in a Sci-fi-fantasy film about a distant planet, the Beach around which the resort is built is an undulating cinnamon-hued quilt made entirely of seashells. It’s as if some deity had adapted Julian Schnabel’s broken plate painting series into a coastline. Cupping the glistening foam of the Atlantic in its soft alabaster palms, sand rises from the waters, disappears beneath the mass of shells, only to resurface on the edge of an all green landscape. Recently restored, Hammock Beach Resort houses a massive estate – one whose quirky features are mitigated by a pink and yellow pastel facade. With muscular walkways and recherché trappings, the self-contained world feels less like a hotel and more like your own private oasis, nestled in luxury and comfort. Boasting Hydro-Grid clay tennis courts, squash courts, nine hole putting green, beaches, spa, garden, an immense water slide and a myriad of pools, it doesn’t take long to forget diurnal matters and lose oneself in hedonistic delights. Borrowing a bike, I coast past the 140-acre golf course and head for the Marina. Whether sport fisher, kayak enthusiast or simply someone in the mood for a workout at the state-of-the-art fitness center, the ambient marina is your haven. As idyllic settings go, Hammock Resort is a nature lover’s dreamscape complete with bird watching, hiking and the internationally renowned Marineland in close proximity. Founded back in 1938, Marineland is the oldest Oceanarium in the world. Initially designed for filming underwater sequences in big budget movies, the Oceanarium is a dolphin sanctuary where one can experience, study and interact with one of the most intelligent, emotional, sentient and playful beings on the planet. Though, many have questioned the ethics of aquariums, Marineland eschews circus-like phenomena, focusing instead on nurturing a true
114 | resident.com
understanding between our two species. Whether touching, feeding or swimming with dolphins, the experience is likely to prove life-altering. With workshops, scientific research, organized excursions, conservation programs and even rescue missions, Marineland is less a theme park than an institution. Despite the wide spectrum of oceanic data Marineland provides, when it comes to internalizing the rapture experienced by a dolphin being fed his/her favorite fish, Delfinos is a good way to go. As seafood restaurants are concerned, Hammock Beach Resort’s very own Delfinos performs a series of culinary backflips that will leave most guests smiling like dolphins. Relying on fresh local ingredients whenever possible, Chef Kevin knows how to maximize on regional elements. His seared sea scallops are buoyantly buttery delights that drift in on a bay of creamy Tuscan grits, riding one’s palate in wave upon wave of subtle flavors. Releasing a spray as fresh as the sea, the succulent morsels vaporize as they break on the shores of an earthy mushroom ragout. Likewise, the main dishes are a trove of wellexecuted oceanic delights. Fenced off by a crisp growth of Fennel onion salad, a piquant creole Corn Machoux sits alongside a bay of Spicy Tomato Sauce that boasts a tantalizingly good blackened Salmon. As for the Charred Grouper, it’s crispy texture and subtle flavor bathes in a sea of citrus wine butter alongside a hill of sweet potatoes and Brussel Sprout Hash. But whether one opts for Delfinos, the Sushi Bar, the Latin infused Ocean Bar, the Atlantic Grille, or the well-honed continental Terrace, the resort has no shortage of diversity in cuisine and ambience. Dining under a moonlit sky, one gets a sense of the timeless world that reigns here. This is the very same sky Menéndez saw, the same dark heaven that called out to him as well. And so I looked at the odd blue-tinted world overhead and noted the sinking mesh of stars lost in a frozen wave. How odd that the thick dark sky mirrored the sea as much as our sea reflected her stars. It was easy to sleep well here amidst the distant sound of the sea and the gentle breeze. With immodestly large villas and suites that sport king sized beds, spacious bathrooms with tubs and showers, state-of-the-art amenities, and covered balconies complete with tables and chairs, the resort is a lulling wave whose undertow becomes a lifetime’s worth of beckoning memories.
The following day, I decided to see the historic city of St. Augustine. Riding a horse-drawn carriage through the center, it was easy to understand how a city established in 1565 – one that continues to boast signature renaissance architecture - had need of a protective wall, a wall still on view at the historic Castillo de San Marcos. It’s equally evident why by the 18th Century, the Spaniards had grown so fond of the city that they added Fort Matanzas in a vain attempt to ensure that no one would ever be taking it from them. The conquistadors, ruthless as they may have been, saw value in this region. And though they may not have respected or valued others, they did spend a greater part of their lives enhancing the land they had stolen. Standing atop the city’s prominent lighthouse, I once again saw what they worked so hard to keep: a lush tree-lined landscape extending its thick green torso over an endless vista of sea and sky. It was this that generations had fought for, this promise of a better future that made life bearable. Though Pedro Menéndez never did find his son, he had built a spectacular home for the future – a future his son did not live long enough to inhabit, a future that even his compatriots could not remain in for long, a future that we ourselves have occupied. And it is we who are the unintended heirs of this conquistador’s future.

JUPITER BEACH RESORT & SPA By Haiting Tan
S
ituated in the golf capital of the country, Jupiter Beach and Spa Resort embodies the spirit of Palm Beach. Pushing open the dark wooden doors, guests will step into a contemporary room with an island-inspired décor but it’s the unparalleled view of the blue waters of the Atlantic that will alter your view of what paradise resembles. The hotel accommodates 40 spacious suites and four penthouse hospitality suites each furnished with a wet bar and a separate living and sleeping area. Breakfast is served at Sinclair’s but guests have the option of dining in bed. Trust me, sitting on a balcony sipping a cup of coffee with a newspaper in hand hearing the waves crashing against the rocks seems like a much better way to start the day. Jupiter’s only oceanfront restaurant, Sinclairs is perfect for any occasion. On a girls trip, feel free to head down to the bar to share a laugh with the girls over cocktails. However, the restaurant’s outdoor terrace is the real catch. Picture yourself slicing through a perfectly grilled beef tenderloin
drizzled with port wine bordelaise topped with potato curls and a side of parslied potato brule while enjoying a glass of red wine with your significant other as you overlook the calming waters of the Atlantic Ocean, sounds like a perfect date doesn’t it? Situated by the waters, the seafood is certainly fresh which is why the seared diver scallops seared perfectly pink paired with grilled pineapple and a side of watercress tossed with perfectly toasted golden crostini and sprinkled with aged balsamic reduction is highly recommended. The first taste of a slightly warm pineapple might be strange but the acidity of the fruit contrasts the sweetness of the scallops, it is bound to electrify your palette. Remember to leave room for dessert because kids and adults alike are bound to love the juicy fresh strawberry dipped in dark chocolate and sprinkled in sea salt. The dessert is not just a beauty to the eye as it tantalizes your taste buds with a blend of sweet, bitter and salty. No resort is complete without a swimming pool. Jupiter is equipped with a heated oceanfront
swimming pool so feel free to take a dip even in the winter. While the odds are against a chilly winter in Florida, Jupiter is ahead of the curve as it has a beautiful waterfall hot tub that guests can take a dip in with a cocktail in hand. Unwilling to leave the pool, guests are welcomed to dine at the Sandbar, an alfresco dining area surrounded by the water. The poolside bar is the perfect place to grab a drink with friends while recounting the adventures of the day as the sun sets in the horizon or just to grab a quick bite before diving back into the warm waters of the Atlantic. In the winter, diners can gather around the firewood to share a laugh with their loved ones. Located by the Sandbar are lounge chairs that faces the beach so adults can conveniently tan next to the bar while keeping an eye on the kids splashing around in the water. A trip to paradise is incomplete until your soles are burning from walking on the 1000 feet of scorching hot white sand but the pain is worth it. Escape from reality and venture out to the ho-

tel’s secluded beach to relax on one of the many beach chairs lined up facing the Atlantic Ocean where you can admire the stunning blue waters while sun tanning. The sounds of the water will transport you to an alternate universe where you will be relieved from the stresses of work and allow you to fully immerse in vacation mode. As the sun sets, take a stroll with your loved one to witness the glowing sun set above the beautiful calm waters. Besides the sun and sea, guests can enjoy many outdoor activities situated in close proximity to the resort. While the hotel does not have its own private course, guests can tee up at multiple world class golf courses located in close proximity to the resort. Opened year-round, the months of May through October are less crowded so there’s no excuse for putting a bad round of golf. For golf fanatics, you’d be ecstatic to find out where famed golfers such as Phil Mickelson and Ricky Fowler live and you can visit the building purchased by former number one golfer Tiger Woods. If you’re more of a Federer fan than a Spieth fan, the hotel has two tennis courts located at its entrance for guests to enjoy. The hotel saves guests the hassle of packing a racket as it provides it as well as equipment for basketball and shuffleboard courts. While dads are enjoying the luscious green courses, kids can hop onto the kayaks and paddle boards offered by Blueline surf and paddle company. While kayaking or paddle boarding,
the guide will attempt to spot marine animals, birds and mangroves which will make learning fun for young ones. However, with the high temperatures of Florida, don’t leave the house without a bottle of sunscreen. Alternatively if you’re looking to learn about Jupiter’s marine life, sign up for a snorkeling tour or borrow gear from Jupiter Dive Center. Known as one of the world’s premier scuba diving vacation destination, the warm waters of Palm Beach ensures year-round diving experiences and great visibility to see over hundred types of fishes along with five species of sea turtles and if you’re fortunate maybe even eels, sharks and rays. Offered by the Loggerhead Marine Life Center, little kids should sign up for the escorted turtle walks where they can learn about the precious endangered sea turtles and how to protect them. With Jupiter making it a priority to protect endangered sea turtles, guests of the resort might have the privilege to witness one of the five different types of turtles laying their eggs during their annual nesting period. In the evening, walk on over to The Jupiter Lighthouse where you can absorb the best view of Palm Beach County. If you’re visiting the town from April to January, take a tour up the lighthouse where you can take in the view of Jupiter from above ground. After a day of adventure under the sun, head to the spa for a relaxing evening. Greeted by a smiling receptionists, guests will be led to the changing
room where they will change into a bathrobe. The pampering begins after getting changed as you lounge on the velvet chairs sipping a glass of champagne. With a full menu, the spa offers services such as facial, massage and manicures or pedicures. The signature facial uses the latest anti-aging technologies to ensure increased firmness, elasticity and fullness and minimizes fine lines and wrinkles so you’ll leave the spa looking years younger. Under the sun for long hours certainly damages your skin, the spa offers treatments such as the soothing sun wrap and ocean restorative facial to hydrate your skin. The soothing sun wrap eases the pain of sunburned with ingredients such as aloe vera and green tea extracts to help minimize redness and irritation and heal the damaged skin. Whether you’re out playing golf or kayaking, a massage is a fantastic way to let your body and mind relax after a tiring day out. Prior to your massage, the spa displays a selection of aromas for guests to choose from. You will leave the spa feeling recharged for another day of sun and sea. Whether you love tanning on the beach, teeing it up with a bunch of pals, sipping wine while chatting with friends, learning about the marine life, Jupiter Beach and Spa Resort guarantees that you’ll never want to step foot out of Palm Beach county.

THE PERRY HOTEL Reimagines Key West By Josh Estrin
C
ommodore Perry, a 19th century American naval officer, was known for taking a bold new approach to looking at the world. He played an integral role in opening Japan to trade, developed a system that led to the curriculum for the United States Naval Academy, and is considered the “Father of the Steam Navy.” Perry also claimed the Florida Keys as a United States’ territory in 1822 after years of disputed ownership and the rest, as they say, is history. Key West, the southernmost point in the continental U.S., has since become known as many things, including the now iconic “hangout” for Hemingway, a port of call for cruise ships, and destination

Channel Bridge.
Now, however, a brand-new 100-room beautiful boutique hotel, The Perry, is reimagining what it means to indulge in Key West. Located on the working waterfront of Stock Island, The Perry is only a few minutes by car or shuttle from the familiar environs of the region, but has already established itself as a destination with its own unique personality. Visitors can fly into Key West International Airport via private charter or major airlines including American, Delta, United, and Silver Airways. From there, The Perry is a short ride via rental car, taxi or shuttle service across Cow Key
For a more leisurely approach, fly into Miami, rent a car, point it south and head down U.S. 1 to the Keys. The Overseas Highway cuts a dazzling path across a 113-mile chain of breathtaking coral and limestone islands connected by 42 bridges. Arrival by boat can be accomplished by a threehour Key West Express ferry out of Fort Myers to the Key West Bight Ferry Terminal; with private boats having access to Stock Island’s private 220slip marina with state-of-the-art floating docks that sit in the largest deep-water harbor in the Florida Keys.
FINE DINING
Stock Island is a place full of life and local color, and The Perry takes great advantage of its exceptional location. It is seamlessly connected to the vibrant and colorful lifestyle right outside the door. The hotel effortlessly integrates old world charm and modern amenities. Rooms have generous balconies providing incredible views of the saltwater lagoon or marina as well as the renowned Key West sunrises. Many rooms are dog friendly, and all feature showcase local artwork.
On The Horizon: The Perry Hotel is not done yet with several “works in progress” including: • An on-site distillery. • Signature Perry craft beers. • Salt Provisions — a Key West original selling unique salts, spices, and honey with rotating art exhibitions hosted by local artists and craftsmen adjacent to the hotel lobby. • Paddle-board and kayak tours launching from the hotel’s marina
As the sun sets: Executive Chef Ryan Fredstrom helms the hotel’s two restaurants. Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen & Bar the main eatery, offers an eclectic, edgy, and deliciously eccentric array of small and large plates, all celebrating the joys of American coastal comfort food. Offering indoor or outdoor seating options and featuring fresh produce, high-quality meats, and local seafood, Matt’s is a foodie’s dream come true.
While the Perry Hotel has everything any visitor could need, the desire to venture out and explore is expected and encouraged. Here are few places to consider during any stay: • Hogfish Bar & Grill • Lazy Dog Water Sports • Duval Street • Old Town • Mallory Square
Available activities include reveling in the character of Stock Island by bike or scooter, or exploring the eclectic art, entertainment, and history of Key West. Water fun includes poolside lounging, kayak and paddle adventures, snorkeling and diving in the third largest coral reef in the world, sailing impossibly blue waters and deep-sea fishing. The Perry Hotel is Key West redefined and reimagined, offering the very best – the Commodore would most certainly approve.

PURELY MICHIGAN A photo essay by photographer ANDREW WERNER

veryone loves the unexpected, especially when the unexpected exceeds expectations.
Forget what you think you know about Detroit. The city has been having going through a renaissance over the past few years and I recently had the pleasure, thanks to Pure Michigan travel, to get a first hand look at some of the hotspots, boutique restaurants and places giving a new life to a classic town. Using the Arts as a strong factor in the city’s building blocks, galleries and museums such as; 1xRun, the Library Street Collective, the Detroit Institute of Arts (where Diego Rivera’s famous Detroit Industry mural is located), and the Motown Museum, Detroit is attracting visitors who want to learn more about it’s the past and experience it’s present. Pewabic Pottery was a trip favorite – showcasing not only beautiful pieces of world famous pottery, the landmark also focuses on the brands’ founder Mary Chase Perry Stratton and her struggle in the early 20th century to be an independent female artist in a specialized medium. 1xRun Gallery
Culinary arts were included in our tour as well! Whether it was a quick lunch at the famous Supino Pizzeria, delicious baubles and bubbles at Wright & Co., or a posh sit down at Savannah Blue, the food scene in Detroit absolutely did not disappoint. Appetizer at Wright & Co.

Yet, the metal work in the capitol did not compare to the genius installation titled ‘Beyond Streaming: A Sound Mural for Flint”, by artist Jan Tichy at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. The series of intertwined pipes each contained stories and voices bringing visibility to the horrific Flint Water Crisis. Off to Grand Rapids to see more of the art scene. We toured the Grand Rapids Ballet and were granted a sneak peak backstage and the inter workings of their recent production of Alice in Wonderland. The craft team constructed beautiful costumes for the dancers multiplying exponentially the power of art by marrying the two mediums.
Keeping up with the Arts scene, we approached our second of three stops in Michigan in Lansing – the state capitol. The ornate building towered over its surroundings creating the grandiose visual of strength and power. In a time where more was more, this building featured beautiful architecture and attention to details from the stained glass ceilLansing Capitol Building

even left me speechless. Meyer May’s iconic home was another remarkable stop on our tour. The home, designed and furnished by world-renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright is a piece of art all unto itself. A fete of style and engineering in its own time (built in 1908) the house features bold linear elements, ‘new technology’ for its day, and a strategic layout to provide privacy for the family. Did you know that Meyer May was the first retailer to put clothing on hangers in a retail store?

The arts in Grand Rapids have boomed to festival status with the creation of ArtPrize, the competition that turns the city into a living gallery – installations in every medium through downtown. BARON’S COVE Sag Harbor’s Waterfront Charm By Monika Ploc
T
o savor every last bite of summer, Baron’s Cove Sag Harbor, whipped up quite the feast in its Hamptons end-of-season fête. The newly renovated harborfront resort takes its location very seriously, as it transformed its prime outdoor patio into a daytime barbeque hot-spot for Rob Shawger, the leader of the Salty Rinse BBQ team, and Baron’s Cove acclaimed chef Matty Boudreau. The duo showed off their culinary talents on Texas style brisket, glazed baby back ribs, pulled pork, Montauk Brewery beer can chicken with all the fixings, and not to mention live music. Conveniently overlooking the Sag Harbor Cove Yacht Club and a ten-minute stroll from Sag Harbor’s Main Street, almost everything at Baron’s Cove has a subtle hint of nautical ease in woven navy fabric. From the 67-room charming décor to the intimate seating surrounding both indoor and outdoor fireplaces in the lobby’s bar and lounge, all jibes well with the historic vibe of Sag Harbor’s whaling roots. The wall-hanging whale above the fireplace creates a nautical focal point and a conversation starter in any seating area.

With the Hamptons International Film Festival kicking off October 5th, Baron’s Cove guests can cozy up in the outdoor patio during those late autumn days in casual rocking Adirondack chairs over beer, wine, and signature fall cocktails with a light meal, like farm stand crudité and sliders from the resort’s Harbor menu. Or, consider the second-floor dining room and outdoor terrace with panoramic views of those ruby red sunsets over the harbor any night of the week.
favorite is the “Travels with Charley” package, where you can bring Fido along sans size limits. With so many fantastic dog walking parks and trails around, there’s no excuse for leaving your furry friend behind. Take your pup in any one of the dog-friendly Village Garden Rooms. With maximum accessibility for the whole family, these rooms are located on the first floor with plush queen or king-size beds, complete with a Baron’s Cove Frisbee and a special dog treat.
Not only does the resort boast one of the best views in the Hamptons, it provides ease of all-inclusive perks to virtually everything in the Hamptons guests from all over the world can enjoy year-round. From a harbor-facing pool, basketball and tennis courts, to complimentary bike rentals, private parking, and a selection of fun, invigorating, and relaxing wellness options like “Yo-Core,” on the front lawn for the mind and body. Not to mention the hotel’s complimentary beach shuttle service to one of the nearby Hamptons beaches. Still, the best part about Baron’s Cove is that it exudes the personality of a quaint local inn, within its all-American resort lifestyle. A personal
Guest village rooms, harbor suites, and lofts are turned towards either the village or harbor, are spacious and designed in cool shades of blue, gray and white, some with private terraces overlooking the water. All rooms come with a flat-screen TV and extras include bathrobes and free toiletries. But what’s most endearing is the bedding that’s monogrammed with a Baron’s Cove burgee flag. Interior designer Colleen Bashaw nailed it, so beach house chic. Baron’s Cove is located at 31 West Water Street in Sag Harbor. baronscove.com

ocated between Europe and Asia, down the coast of the Black Sea, lies a partially recognized state with a rich and ancient history; since the 9th century BC, the country has been under Roman, Ottoman, Russian and Georgian rule. Literally under the radar of most travelers — it is technically under Georgian rule but governed independently — the country of Abkhazia boasts over 70 resorts and draws over 1 million visitors per year. As controversial as it is beautiful, the country of Abkhazia sits in the nexus of the Georgia-Russia conflict. Georgia doesn’t recognize Abkhazia as an independent state (Georgia technically still bans tourism there), though Russia does. To venture into Abkhazia, travelers must fly to russia and then proceed via train or car across the Abkhaz-Russia border. Despite the controversy, Abkhazia is become a booming retreat for wellness and wealth, with 210 kilometers of sand beaches, dolphins and sea water. If you ever find yourself near the Black Sea, this hidden gem is definitely worth a visit. Here’s five reasons to visit Abkhazia on your next Euro trip.

Honoring
THE “PRINCE OF BROADWAY” By Barry Bassis
“
Prince of Broadway” at Manhattan Theater Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (261 West 47th Street) is a celebration of the remarkable six decade career of producer/director Hal Prince. With each of the nine-member cast alternating in brief recollections by Prince, the focus remains on the songs from the musicals. The show is co-directed by Prince and Susan Stroman (who also choreographed). While this would seem to be a surefire entertainment, it doesn’t consistently succeed. The overture arranged by Jason Robert Brown is vertiginous, squeezing in tunes from 16 disparate musicals. The scattershot feeling returns in the opening number, the lovely ballad “Hey There” from “Pajama Game.” Michael Xavier is not even given a chance to perform the whole song. The follow-up, “Heart” from the same 1955 musical (by Xavier, Brandon Uranowitz, Chuck Cooper and Tony Yazbeck) does hit a home run. Much of the material is well performed but has been done in recent revivals that surpassed the renditions here (for example, “She Loves Me” and “West Side Story”). Beowulf Boritt (sets) and William Ivey Long (costumes) recall the originals but appear

to be imitations. Obviously, a show with excerpts from 16 musicals can’t reproduce the scenery of “The Phantom of the Opera” with its ornate chandelier. Also, some numbers suffer from being taken out of context. The most unsettling is Uranowitz’s rendition of “If You Could See Her From My Eyes” from the Nazi era “Cabaret” with his closing line that the woman with a gorilla mask is Jewish. On the other hand, there are some wonderful numbers from shows that were commercial failures. Janet Dacal’s performance of “You’ve Got Possibilities” from “It’s a Bird …It’s a Plane …It’s Superman” with Xavier as Clark Kent is a delight. Some of the talented performers are given a chance to take on roles that they will probably never have a chance to do in a staged version. African-American Chuck Cooper has a good time with “If I Were a Rich Man” from “Fiddler on the Roof.” On the other hand, he is less successful with “Ol’ Man River” from “Showboat” where his voice lacks the necessary heft. Veterans Karen Ziemba and Emily Skinner are always worth catching. Here they both turn up with others in numbers from “Follies” (Prince’s favorite of his shows). Ziemba also delivers a heart-stopping rendition of Fraulein
Schneider’s “So What?” from “Cabaret” and Skinner sings a tart “Ladies Who Lunch,” from “Company.” Bryonha Marie Parham’s title song from “Cabaret” probably outdoes the version on the original cast album. While many of the songs are familiar (e.g., “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” from “Evita” and “The Music of the Night” from “The Phantom of the Opera”), some of the best numbers come from the flops (e.g., Skinner’s singing “Now You Know” from “Merrily We Roll Along” and Yazbeck and Xavier’s “This is Not Over Yet” from “Parade”). Yazbeck also contributes the best tap dancing of the evening in “The Right Girl” from “Follies.” Brown’s closing number, “Do the Work,” performed by the entire cast, is pleasant but not on the level of Irving Berlin’s “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” which would seem to be the model. In sum, “Prince of Broadway” confirms the brilliance of the producer/director’s contributions to the theater. At the same time, he might be better honored by a revival of one of the lesser known musicals, such as “It’s a Bird …It’s a Plane …It’s Superman” or “Merrily We Roll Along.

all has arrived and the Hamptons are not just a Summer hotspot but a year-round destination with plenty of things to do and places to visit. One of the highlights of the Hamptons Fall season is the Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF). Held each year in October, HIFF previews the most talked about award season films, and this year is no different. Come for the movies, stay for the beauty of the Hamptons, and dine at local favorites. The Festival will celebrate its Silver Anniversary this fall. Here are some of the films creating pre-Oscar buzz this season that will
be premiering at this year’s festival. Some notables attending the festival this year include: Julie Andrews, Jamie Bell, Annette Bening, Jason Blum, Carter Burwell, Dean Cole, Alan Cumming, Simon Curtis, Michael Finley, Josh Gad, Jennifer Garner, Armie Hammer, Mariska Hargitay, and Spencer Haywood
Darkest Hour
and interviews with his famous friends and clients, Bartok weaves through the journey of Aucoin’s life up until his tragic end—reminding everyone that he truly was larger than life.
Joe Wright (PRIDE & PREJUDICE, ATONEMENT) returns with a thrilling drama centered on Winston Churchill—starring Academy Award® nominee, Gary Oldman in his most forceful and transformative role to date. Newly appointed as Prime Minister of Great Britain, Churchill faces one of the most defining trials of his career: negotiate peace with Nazi Germany or stand firm to fight for the ideals, liberty, and freedom of a nation. With the threat of invasion imminent as the unstoppable Nazi forces move across Western Europe, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of history.
Breathe Best-known for his motion-capture work as Gollum in the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and Caesar in the PLANET OF THE APES series, Andy Serkis makes his directorial debut with the inspiring true story of activists Robin and Diana Cavendish (Academy Award® nominee Andrew Garfield and Golden Globe® winner Claire Foy). When Robin’s shocking contraction of rapid-onset polio leaves him paralyzed, the two make the controversial decision to remove him from the hospital and define a different life for him. Working together to both create a sustainable condition for Robin and break the stigma surrounding disability rights, the two begin a groundbreaking campaign captured with a warm and enlivening touch by Garfield, Foy, and Serkis.
Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool Adapted from British actor Peter Turner’s memoir of the same name, the late-life relationship between legendary Golden-era actress Gloria Grahame (Academy Award®nominee Annette Bening) and the significantly younger Turner (Jamie Bell) is lovingly recounted in Paul McGuigan’s moving period romance. As the two begin their relationship, we follow Grahame as she moves between Los Angeles, a town in which she seems eternally out of touch with an industry that doesn’t quite know how to treat her, and Turner’s native Liverpool. At the center of it all is Bening, whose lively and nuanced performance brilliantly pays homage to an actress denied the stature she deserved in her own lifetime.
I, Tonya For many, the revelations following the attack on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan in the lead-up to the 1994 Winter Olympics cemented the legacy of Tonya Harding as one of the most iconic villains in sports history. Craig Gillespie’s at turns hilarious and tragic look at the life of Harding (astonishingly realized by Margot Robbie) flips the script on this sensational narrative—following her from the tumultuous relationship with her abusive mother (Allison Janney) to the absurd moments that led to that fateful night in Cobo Arena. Fueled by a razor-sharp script that doesn’t let anyone in Harding’s orbit out of its sights, I, TONYA is an outrageous and surprising look at the players behind the notorious scandal..
The Shape Of Water As the Cold War reaches its peak in the early 1960s, Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a mute janitor working at a US government facility, finds a strange creature held deep within the laboratory. Guillermo del Toro’s THE SHAPE OF WATER is a mesmerizing continuation of his fascination with on-screen monsters and their real-world counterparts, wonderfully realized through a brilliant cast (including Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer, and Richard Jenkins), and jaw-dropping production design and cinematography. In creating perhaps the most realized synthesis of his many preoccupations to date, del Toro has created a wondrous take on the classic monster movie that seems to exist out of time and yet inseparable from our own.
