Editor’s Note

AUTUMN IS COMING TO TOWN! While January officially starts the new calendar year, I’ve always felt that September is unofficial the start of the year as the dog days of summer come to an end with Labor Day Weekend paving the way to fall and its new beginnings. Everyone returns from their summer vacations filled with a renewed energy that permeates New York City with life. New York Fashion Week marks the beginning of the season with its whirlwind of soirees, events and benefits that characterize the best city in the world. For the September issue we focused on the best of fall. From the glorious fashion that adorns all the windows, to beauty must haves, fall travel, dining, real estate, and theater. This month our cover star os the incredibly talented Nyle di Marco who despite being deaf, has gone on to win the hearts of America winning America’s Next Top Model last year and Dancing With the Stars this past season. Proving that the magnitude of his talent is not limited by a physical disability, he has become a role model that continues to break molds and stereotypes of those with disabilities and is using his celebrity status to improve the lives of deaf people around the world.

Memorable

Moments of Life!

We also caught up with the successful and visionary real estate developer and game changer, Gil Dezer who has changed the landscape of real estate in South Florida and New York City and continues to make headway with his revloutionary partnerships and new developments. With the change of seasons, we featured the best of fall beauty with must have beauty items as well as tools for creating the striking looks straight off the runway. To showcase the bold and jewel toned palette for fall we partnered with celebrity makeup artist JP Ramirez and the talented floral designers from B Floral to create a fantasy beauty shoot that showcase makeup inspired by the beautifully saturated hues found in flowers. As the Toronto International Film Festival is held in September, we traveled to Canada’s coolest city, Toronto to spotlight their dynamic culinary scene and hot lounge scene that has put the city on the jetsetter map. With fall comes a bevy of hotel and restaurant openings that are shaking up the scene in NYC. Of course luxurious weekend getaways are always on our mind as we covered some of our favorite places such as Miami, San Juan, Hudson Valley, and Virginia that are all just a short jaunt away. Welcome Back NYC!

ROZA DINOVA

TALENTED PHOTO RETOUCHER

M

likely there’s a touch of a professional retoucher. Since she was a child, Roza enjoyed drawing and painting, which is akin to the high-end retouching. She later went digital and got a graphic design degree from a Russian universities, where retouching projects appealed to her the most. A classical university education gives an advantage over self-taught enthusiasts when it comes to illustration, composition, color theory, body anatomy and history of art. Roza is confident they are essential for success in any contemporary visual art, whether it is graphical design, interior design or retouching.

photographers, models, hair and beauty salons, all becoming her loyal clients. She is constantly branching out, available for her next beauty brand campaign.

Second, because most people don’t even know such a profession exist: “ – Retoucher? Who’s that? I thought the photographer does it themselves”. This or similar reaction is what a retoucher usually hears when somebody asks what one does for a living.

During her career Roza has worked as a retoucher in the photo lab, graphical designer in one of the best regional event agencies, and even launched a kids fashion e-commerce startup. She says the latter experience taught her to be responsible with the deadlines and make sure even the most demanding customers are happy.

While a lot of photographers can and do work on it themselves, especially for events such as weddings, a simple portrait, or photo intended to be published on the web. But if photoshoot is done for a glossy magazine or beauty ad, most

After moving to Melbourne, Australia Roza decided to take the path she loved the most and where she wants herself to excel – in retouching. Since 2013 she has been working with a number of celebrities, online and paper magazines,

Of course, retouching is different for various purposes. For Example, children’s photos with natural light doesn’t need a significant effort, since there is usually no skin work required to correct blemishes or wrinkles. On the other hand, a printed beauty close-up photo, like the one featured in this month’s issue, is considered the most difficult and time-consuming and can take from 5-8 hours to make, since it is crucial to make sure it looks perfect even under the microscope.

eet our talented and internationally published retoucher, who has worked on a number of our covers and beauty spreads – Roza Dinova. She calls herself an ‘invisible staff’, and there are two reasons for this. First, because the excellence of a retoucher is to make sure his/her work is not noticeable, hiding the imperfections and emphasizing the strengths of the shot, keeping lights, shadows and human anatomy natural, and holding to the original intent of the photographer as well.

18 | resident.com

How to tell if retouch is good or bad? “First sign of a bad one is when you can see it has been ‘photoshopped’. A good Photoshop is not knowing for sure if a photo has been Photoshopped. Skin shouldn’t look like a blurred plastic mask without any sign of texture, eyes and teeth shouldn’t be abnormally white, and colors shouldn’t be oversaturated” – said Roza.

THE HAMPTONS BEST PARTIES “FADA House of Madness” Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center remains the Hamptons edgiest and most entertaining evening. This year’s “happening” was dubbed “FADA House of Madness.” Over 130 emerging artists from 28 countries created performances on the grounds that included: being greeted by an army of Jacques Reynaud’s Angels of Apocalypse, John Margarita’s One Ton Tank, which featured a man in a speedo in a box filled with water dancing in slow motion and a black plane doing a nose dive into the ground. Guests included Ovan gardd director Wilson’s muse Inga Maren Otto, Caroline Vreeland, Kathy and Rick Hilton, Katrina Otto-Bernstein, Chris Henchy and Alex Soros. This year’s auction helped raise two million dollars and included 125 pieces donated by the likes of Marina Abramovic, Donald Baechler and Annie Leibovitz. This year’s honoree was Madame Giancarla Berti. Ja Rule sang and word is Kanye West will perform next year. Plukka, the fine jeweler was among the night’s sponsors. Watermillcenter.org. Andrea Correale of Elegant Affairs created a delectable dinner in honor of author and chef Eric Ripert who owns Le Bernardin, at a private residence under the stars. The delectable menu consisted of pan roasted chanterelle mushrooms, grilled halibut, red chili hollandaise, crispy herb potatoes and spring Peas. Me and My Shadow The Vered Gallery in East Hampton has a show featuring the work of the late Larry Rivers curated by Gallerist Janet Lehr’s. The critically acclaimed exhibit of sculptures and paintings is titled Me and My Shadow ,Oedipus Rex and Legs. veredart.com. The opening was hosted by the artist’s son Sam Rivers and Alan Alda’s daughter Beatrice Alda and Jennifer Brooke, who made a documentary on the artist’s controversial work, Legs. Among those checking out the art were Janna Bullock, Emanuele Fioree, Julie Hayeck, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin and models Marcio Camargos and Vic Banker. While admiring Rivers suite of Bug Paintings, NYC restaurateur Cindy Guyer and atheistic nurse Jane Scher were getting advice on how to avoid getting bitten by the bugs on the East End from Dr. Julia Fedorenko who created her eponymously named True Organic Bug Stick, which the “green media“ calls “the ultimate protection from ticks and mosquitos“. drfedorenko.com. Sadly this continues to be an issue in the Hamptons, Palm Beach and Miami. One wag said Rivers foreshadowed this problem with the series of paintings he did for the sets of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet Oedipus Rex. Of course, some people say anything, including Donald Trump!

CHARLIE SCOPOLETTI THE LIGHT THAT SHINES

M

usic is universal and melodies touch hearts and souls around the World. Music can change your emotion in an instant. It can transport you to a time and place and it can heal the soul. That’s the power and beauty of music. For the last two decades, Charlie Scopoletti, a two-time cancer survivor has harnessed his gift of writing impactful songs with lyrics that heal, inspire and motivate. Charlie considers Rob Thomas, Dave Matthews, Jason Mraz, Michael Franti and Hall & Oates among his musical influences, and he does them proud as an honest storyteller with a terrific ear for melody and a unique life story delivered through song. “Writing songs is such a passion of mine. I love the whole experience from start to finish. The way

inspiration appears and a melody forms from out of the silence. It’s magical and spiritual; it’s a connection at the highest level”. Charlie is proof that musicians have influence that can lead to real impact. Teaming up with Cancer organizations to raise awareness and funds to help in the united mission to conquer Cancer. Recently, Charlie was asked to write and perform a song for the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation for their 14th Annual Dream & Promise Gala, held at Cipriani’s on Wall ST. Charlie stood on stage in the hustle of NYC, and spoke openly about his struggles with Cancer, how he beat and overcame adversity and how he lost his childhood best friend to her battle with a Brain Tumor. As the guests in attendance stopped their conversations and

listened to each word Charlie spoke and each heartfelt lyric, there was a deep connection and an overwhelming understanding of why everyone was there. The song he wrote is called “Light that Shines,” it’s a song full of heart and inspiration, it will lift your spirit to soar and shine bright. Charlie recorded the song with Oscar, Grammy and Emmy winning Robert L. Smith and Defy Recordings LLC. 100% of the proceeds go directly to CBTF so they can continue to offer the support, programs and research that greatly impact the families and survivors they work with. GET YOUR SMILE

RED CARPET READY By Dr. Sol Schwartzstein

O

f all the preparation that goes into getting ready for a big event, the cliché still holds true – you’re never fully dressed without a smile. The only way to guarantee that your smile is as glamorous as you are is to take the best care of your teeth. In addition to basic oral hygiene and regular visits for cleanings, there’s a host of cosmetic options readily available today that’ll bring extra special something to your overall look – and most A-listers won’t smile for the cameras without them. Everyone knows white teeth are a must - even the most perfect outfit can’t make up for stained or yellowed teeth. A bright smile brings a youthful glow to your face and illuminates your whole appearance, and yet some of those too-perfect smiles may be equally off-putting. At Central Park South Dental we offer the most modern options for bringing out the whitest and most natural looking smile. The most popular option for our busy patients is the Zoom! Professional Whitening System. Zoom takes just 45 minutes in the dental chair and offers immediate and long-lasting results, an average of eight shades whiter. The procedure is safe, comfortable and typically requires only one visit. Our at-home whitening process requires a quick impression of the teeth taken at the office to create the customized trays for the whitening gel. These more affordable trays are also very popular and effective, bringing your smile up to six shades whiter in 7 to 14 days.

38 | resident.com

Of course, whitening is most effective when teeth are in healthy shape. Patients who are unhappy with the size or condition of their teeth can become extremely selfconscious. They will typically find porcelain veneers to be their best option. Veneers are thin porcelain overlays that cover existing teeth to recreate a natural look, and are the quickest and yet most long term route to the perfect smile. There are several varieties of veneers available to suit each patient’s dental condition and desired look - from those that require very little preparation and are hand waxed to shape the ideal contours, to high-strength solid zirconia veneers for use in combination with larger dental reconstructions. The newest veneers on the market today deliver the most natural feel and translucency while still remaining strong. We evaluate each patient’s needs and preferences to customize the optimal treatment for each individual smile. My happiest moments come when I see our patients smiling proudly for the paparazzi - whether it’s an actress on the red carpet or a bride and groom on their wedding day - or even just for the perfect selfie. We love the increased self-confidence and swagger that our patients display when they can flash that picture-perfect smile at a moment’s notice! TRUE ORGANIC DR. JULIA FREDORENKO By Bennett Marcus

Photo caption: Dr. Larissa Fedorenko (L) & Dr. Julia Fedorenko (R)

Organic Skincare Products Sometimes you accidentally discover what you didn’t know you needed, and a successful business is born. That’s how Dr. Julia Fedorenko, a naturopath and clinical herbalist, founded True Organic, a line of organic skincare products. It all started when she and her two young children moved from Manhattan to the Hamptons, and her son received a tick bite, despite having used a natural repellant. “I said I had to come up with something more effective because I did not want to use the chemicals in DEET, knowing how detrimental it is to the nervous system,” Dr. Fedorenko says. “I found a tick latched on his hairline, and it was just really inspiration, a kind of desperate act to protect my kids.” She blended her own formula for her family, and the other moms at preschool asked her about it, so she started mixing it for others, and then realized that there was a demand for an effective formula that smells fabulous, is organic, and met her very highest standards - that she would put it on her kids.

A Naturopath As a naturopath, Julia Fedorenko knew which natural ingredients are good for the body, and for the skin, she teamed up with a dermatologist who also happens to be her mother, Dr. Larissa Fedorenko, M.D. “We kind of combine the West

40 | resident.com

and the East,” Julia says. Dr. Fedorenko True Organics is now in its third year, and there are currently three products, the Bug Stick, a sunscreen called the Sun Stick, and a moisturizer, the Skin Stick. The SPF 30 broad spectrum Sun Stick, Julia explains, is “non-nano,” meaning it contains no nanoparticles, tiny particles that can go through your skin and into your bloodstream. The Skin Stick moisturizer works for cracked, very dry skin. “Due to the formula with pure cocoa butter, it’s excellent for pregnant women, to prevent stretch mark,” she says. “It’s very nourishing and therapeutic to skin. We have no artificial fragrances in the formula, so all you smell is the cocoa.”

last winter, and in August - the day before we spoke to Julia, in fact - they were declared “EWG (Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Database) verifiedTM,” a program designed the Environmental Working Group specifically for cosmetics.

Bug Stick, Sun Stick & Skin Stick

Five Women

Disliking the pollution that plastic packages cause, Julia came up with completely biodegradable packaging that is very sturdy, but is actually made out of paper. “If you are camping and lose your Bug Stick, Sun Stick or Skin Stick, it boom, disappears, it doesn’t ruin the planet,” she says. “And when you’re finished using it, it doesn’t ruin the planet by going into the garbage and end up floating in the ocean.” This year alone, using the paper tubes kept over 60 thousand plastic containers out of our waste stream. The company’s products were USDA Organic Certified by Oregon Tilth

Additional products are in development, and the True Organic brand is sold via the company web site, drfedrenko.com as well as on Amazon and in local Hamptons shops, including Marders and Provisions and will soon be in stores in South Florida.

The company started in Julia’s kitchen, and now a production is done at a factory in Iowa with a dedicated team and very strict quality control. They’ve also added a fulfillment center in New Jersey, and at the company headquarters in the Hamptons, Julia has brought in a talented group of local women to handle the business. “We do a lot of business meetings while the kids are doing play dates,” she laughs. “While we’re driving, we’re talking, we’re bringing the kids, we’re picking up the kids, we constantly give each other a hand of support. We’re basically now like a team of five women driving this sailboat.”

WHAT IS SAVA? By Dr. Steven VICTOR

R

egenerative Medicine is rapidly elevating the way we approach, access and further define beauty in the twenty first century. The most modern combinations of technology and science are bringing anti-aging therapies specifically designed by the unique cells of each individual to the forefront. Cosmetic Regenerative Physicians have the newest and most innovative tools in the anti-aging arsenal. They utilize an individual’s fat, stem cells, tissue growth factors and anti-inflammatories to awaken and enable the reparative capabilities naturally produced by the human body. One of the most exciting procedures available is SAVA. This nonsurgical approach is making strides to someday replace the traditional facelift. SAVA effectively restores lost volume and elasticity as it rejuvenates the appearance and functionality of the skin in a way that is fast, safe and highly effective with very little downtime. Frequently Asked Questions about SAVA What is SAVA? Subcutaneous Augmentation and Vasculariza-

42 | resident.com

tion and Anti-inflammatory (SAVA) is a patentpending technique that separates the stem cells and tissue growth factors from a relatively small volume of fat. SAVA was invented by Dr. Steven Victor, a board certified Regenerative Medicine physician. What are Stromal Vascular Fraction Cells? Stromal Vascular Fraction Cells (SVFC) are heterogeneous cells found in our blood vessels that serve as the body’s natural repair cells. They contain the stem cells and tissue growth factors that fight inflammation, increase blood flow, grow new blood vessels, fight cell death, and grow and replace damaged tissues. How does SAVA differ from other fat grafting techniques? Other fat grafting procedures rely on a large proportion of fat with fewer stem cells present in the solution. The stem cell benefits are significantly diluted in traditional fat grafting. The SAVA technique utilizes stem cells and growth factors that have been separated from the fat. The anti-inflammatory effects of local delivery are reinforced systemically to magnify the long-term healing capabilities of the treatment. An increase in facial volume, combined with an overall improvement in skin quality is capable of reversing the impacts

of aging by 20 years. How long do the effects of SAVA last? Dr. Victor has been performing the SAVA technique since 2011 and the results have been remarkable. His patients report long-lasting and ongoing improvements to their skin as well as their quality of life. Theoretically, the results should last up to 10 years. Is SAVA safer than plastic surgery? Yes! SAVA is much safer than traditional facelift surgery. It is a minimally invasive procedure that does not require general anesthesia. There is no risk of damage to blood vessels, nerves or muscles. Dr. Victor is passionate about Regenerative Medicine and believes it’s no longer good enough to merely look great -- he wants his patients to feel great. We can greatly enhance our quality of life by enabling the human body to engage its own reparative capabilities in order to identify and strengthen areas of diminished physical functionality and performance. What once seemed like a futuristic approach is suddenly available to all of us!

AIRSCULPT LASER LIPOSCULPTURE AT

ELITE BODY SCULPTURE B ody Contouring has been quite the buzz in the world of beauty as celebrities and social media have been fueling the quest for perfectly sculpted abs, arms and derrières. And for many, the challenge of losing those last few pounds can seem like an impossible feat. That’s when minimally invasive procedures like AirSculpt Laser Liposculpture comes in. As one of the latest and highly sought after treatments developed by Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Aaron Rollins, his new method reduces the amount of trauma to the body with a more natural result. And the best part is there are no needles, scalpels, sutures or general anesthesia needed, instead light medication and some laughing gas. Depending on the treatment area the procedure can last from one to three hours and patients remain awake while a laser is first inserted to literally dissolve fat while also tightening skin. Next, an innovative small cannula that vibrates 1,000 times a minute drains excess fat, allowing for more precision and smoother results. Since there are no stitches and a lidocaine saline solution is injected into the treatment areas, the recovery period can be slightly messy with some leakage for the first few days. Most

patients return to work one to three days, and depending on the amount of fat removed can experience discomfort and swelling for the first two weeks. A compression garment must be worn during this period and final results can take up to three months as the body continues to heal and rid itself of excess fluid. Part of a good recovery can include lymphatic drainage massage which can help with unevenness and scar tissue. Lori Kwasnicka, founder of Allied Health Provider, works with New York’s top doctors with medical and cosmetic surgery patients to optimize results with her Manual Lymphatic Drainage techniques and lypossages that work wonders and speed up recovery time. In LA, especially pre-award season, celebs flock to get touched-up - from underarms to bat wings, knees, and arms. And now Elite Body Sculpture has recently opened up an office in New York where renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Adam Schaffner can adeptly contour the bodies of any Manhattanite aspiring to look and feel their best. www.alliedhealthprovider.com www.elitebodysculpture.com

Originally named the GreenFlea Market, as their following grew it was later changed to Grand Bazaar NYC in the summer of 2016 to reflect the changing times and their booming market. he golf course is the one place where men can take a bold fashion stand without fear of the fashion police. Now Devereux, an innovator in men’s golf and resort clothing, takes the best of golf course chic to the next level with its Fall 2016 Americana Collection. Founded in 2013 by brothers and avid golfers, Robert and Will Brunner had a vision, to give men the tools they needed to develop a sharp fashion sense, on and off the course. Robert, serving as the company’s creative director, says he purposely designed the collection around a color palette to counter the in-your-face feel common to some sportswear lines. Instead, opting for fall colors that make a man feel like a man without compromising his sense of style. Devereux is fascinated by resort life in America and the fashion that surrounds it, he commented. Our Americana collection offers a selection of shirts that will appeal to the jet-setting man who is at his favorite resort for the week, or the sophisticated man looking to exude a cool confidence in a casual office

environment. We’ve evolved from a golf-based collection to one that offers solutions for every aspect of the resort lifestyle. Seeking to bridge the gap between fashion and progressive golf styles, the Brunners realized that men want clothes that perform, exude style, fit properly, and move seamlessly from workday to weekend. The Americana Collection easily lives up to Devereux’s high standards with its simple-yet-sophisticated pieces featuring contemporary colors, superb attention to detail, and easy versatility. • Beckham Polo: Raglan style performance players knit blend, which features a tri-blend of fine pima cotton, polyester and spandex. MORPHEW THE LUXURY VINTAGE ARCHIVE

By Cecilia Morales

Secret Of The Stars

K

ate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Nicole Richie and Kim Kardashian are just a few of the fashionistas who shop at Morphew, the luxury fashion vintage archive near Midtown. Morphew’s co-founders Bridgette Morphew and Jason Lyon say their mission is to connect the past and the future through rich historical concepts.

Alexander McQueen, Dior & Chanel Morphew began life as an archival source of inspiration for designers, including the late Alexander McQueen. “We found this niche in the fashion industry where we were consulting and inspiring fashion designers with vintage concepts,” explains Bridgette. The rare, perfectly maintained pieces presented by Morphew, come from the world’s top design houses including Dior and Chanel, as BY Cecilia Morales well as 200-year-old Victorian lace gowns. Realizing there was an increasing demand for high-end vintage fashion from a fashion history savvy shopper, Morphew opened a showroom, where they receive designers, in-the-know stylists and luxury shoppers every day on West 37th street.

Morphew Lab Boasting an archive of over 6,000 vintage prints, Bridgette says, “Our archive is a library for designers who make us the second step in their design process. The niche pieces and the library we’ve created is vintage; everything here is very rare.” With direct access to such a comprehensive archive, the team decided to explore another option – reclaimed and re-done vintage. This led to the creation of Morphew Lab – a place where antique fashion, contextual history, future trends and technology meet, and consumers can purchase vintage inspired, reconstructed pieces that are both forward thinking and ripe with historical references. “We know that these are important pieces of fashion history,” said Jason, “and due to the amazing feedback we have always received, the retail market found us organically, and then we launched a separate retail venture.” Adding “Our greatest compliment is when someone is shopping and they say, ‘Is this old?’ because they don’t think it’s old because it reads so current,” said Jason. “You can say Valentino’s doing that

56 | resident.com

and so is Cos, Zara and Top Shop, and it’s usually because we sold it to them.”

Founders Bridgette Morphew & Jason Lyon Bridgette and Jason pride themselves in knowing trends years ahead of everyone else and keep vintage pieces in line with modern trends. Jason said, “This makes us different from a lot of vintage dealers who only work with a certain era or idea.” Like fashion itselfs, the Morphew brand has grown and expanded. “Five years ago, everything we were buying was late 70s, early 80s, Japanese minimalist designer pieces like Issey Miyake and Comme De Garcons, and we love that stuff but we have moved towards a different vibe because that’s what happening in fashion today.” They

showcased this transition at Art Southampton, where they showcased their collection at the McNeill Art Group booth.

Haute Couture This designing duo says their ideal shopper is one who knows what she wants and pushes labels aside. “They say you can buy fashion but you can’t buy style,” asserts Jason. “Our consumer is a woman who knows and loves style. She’s a fashionable woman, but she’s not a fashion buyer. To her, a label doesn’t matter.” At Morphew, designer labels don’t lead the conversation. “We sell designs first, and designers second,” said Jason. morphewconcept.com For appointments call 212.564.4331

ne of the most beautiful people in the world- inside and out, Nyle DiMarco is taking the world by storm and using his sudden fame to spread awareness around the world about deaf culture with a mission to improve the lives of deaf people. A native New Yorker, DiMarco was born fourth generation deaf along with his brothers, Neil and Nico- who happens to be a successful DJ. Proving that being deaf is not a disability, Nyle attended Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., the only liberal arts university in the world for the deaf, where he earned a degree in Mathematics. Though he intended to pursue a

career as a math professor, he was inspired by his math teacher to challenge his own abilities and not let the perceived notions that being Deaf was a disability hold him back from pursuing his dreams and experiencing adventure. It seemed inevitable that DiMarco would be in the spotlight where he was discovered by America’s Next Top Model from his Instagram account. Not only is he the first deaf contestant in the show’s history, and the second male to ever win, he’s also went on to win Dancing with the Stars with Peta Murgatoryd five months later. He views deafness as an advantage in modeling and dancing because he is accustomed to conveying

messages without speaking.

How did you get started in the modeling business? Back in 2007 when I was 18, a Deaf photographer, who is now a close friend, Tate Tullier told me that I should consider pursuing modeling and that he wanted to shoot me. We collaborated but I never considered because I was in school pursuing a BA degree in mathematics. After graduating, ANTM found me and the rest is history.

Are you very close with your brothers? We are very close. I love that we all are different and yet so close.

friends. It’s like living with a best friend growing up... but with a twin... even better!

Did you have an interest in dance while growing up? Were you inspired by your twin brother? I never danced nor was I inspired by him. I had different interests!

Tell me a bit about your family and childhood and what it was like being a twin. My family is full of love. We grew up with our grandparents and to this day, we still feel that this is a complete family. We eat pasta every Wednesday and Sunday. We’re also one loud family. Italians! It is kind of funny because growing up I’ve never felt that I had a twin. We were so different, especially our features, yet so close. Many confuse us as best

In addition to running the Nyle DiMarco Foundation, Nyle is also starring in the Hulu comedy, Difficult People this year. DiMarco does not consider himself to be disabled by deafness and he sees his media profile as an opportunity to bring awareness to Deaf culture. DiMarco is passionate about literacy, anti-bullying campaigns and advocacy within the Deaf Community and here he sits with Resident to show his personal side while discussing what’s next on his horizon.

What do you feel is your strongest sense? My eyes. I’m visual and super alert. There is a research proving that without being able to hear, you increase your visual ability. It’s like having a power. Where do you call home these days? New York City. I was born in Queens.

You are big on social media and connect with fans around the world what do you think is the next biggest frontier? I think the next biggest frontier is uniting the world and helping better Deaf lives overseas. Deaf people have it a lot worse outside of the U.S. What was the memorable comment you have received from a fan? “I would become Deaf for Nyle.” It’s not strange because I loved it!! Tell me a little about your foundation and some of the current projects that it is launching and making headway with. Thank you for asking -- my foundation (NDF) is important to me! Currently we are focusing on Deaf and hard of hearing children and their families. Research shows that the greatest risk to Deaf and hard of hearing children is insufficient exposure to a first language at an early age. From age zero to five our brains are like a sponge, absorbing a great deal of information and acquiring the foundations of language. Our ability to recognize and manipulate the patterns that make up languages—our ability to communicate, to read and write, and to think critically and express ourselves—began with the things that we were exposed to when we were babies. If a baby doesn’t have access to information during that critical time span, then that child will have to play catch up in acquiring language. It’s an uphill battle for the child before even entering kindergarten. It’s not fair. There are 32 million deaf children worldwide, and the vast majority of them aren’t getting the early access and exposure needed for a solid language foundation. The rate of illiteracy is staggering. Our initial efforts will center on empowering families with knowledge and resources on how to give their deaf or hard of hearing child language and literacy. With these critical skills, the sky is the limit for deaf and hard of hearing children.

range Management, a leading Manhattanbased real estate firm, today announced the launch of sales at its latest luxury condominium development, Waverly Brooklyn (Waverly), in the historic neighborhood of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Situated at the nexus of Clinton Hill, Fort Greene and Prospect Heights, the development (located at 500 Waverly Avenue) will set a new luxury standard for the area – a full-service building with high-end interiors and a distinctive façade design that puts it at the vanguard of the architectural concrete renaissance in New York City (NYC). With GKV Architects directing both the interior and exterior programs for the seven-story, 48-unit development, Waverly introduces a unique look for Brooklyn, with a façade comprised of architectural concrete ‘picture frames,’ hand-laid Norman brick and custom fenestration. Of the 48 homes, 37 residences will be market-rate and will range from studios to four-bedroom homes, including penthouses and other units with spacious private terraces. Andrew Bradfield, principal of Orange Management mentions, “As our first condominium development in the borough, we wanted to ensure that the location was quintessentially Brooklyn. Waverly Brooklyn is located on a prominent corner adjacent to two of Brooklyn’s most-prized Historic Districts – Clinton Hill and Fort Greene.” The open-plan kitchens for the 37 market-rate units

An array of high-end European appliances and fixtures—from Bosch, Bertazzoni, Grohe and Liebherr allow for gourmet-level functionality. Select three-bedroom, four-bedroom and penthouse units also feature Bosch speed ovens, wall ovens and 36-inch cooktops. Materially rich, clean and contemporary, the bathrooms for the market-rate units offer Italian porcelain floor tile from Atlas Concorde and large-format floor-toceiling wall tile. Custom wood vanities are topped with Calacatta Oro quartz. The glass-enclosed showers are finished with matching porcelain mosaic tile from Atlas Concorde. MNS will be the exclusive agent handling sales and marketing for the market-rate residences. Pricing for those units will start at approximately $595,000 for studios and go up to approximately $2.4 million for a four-bedroom penthouse home. Residents will benefit from an anticipated 25-year 421-a real estate tax abatement. Highlyann Krasnow, founder of The Design High, and her team handled the interior staging at Waverly. The top-notch amenities at Waverly include an attended lobby; a resident lounge with library,

media center and kitchenette adjacent to a secondfloor terrace with outdoor cooking and dining facilities; a landscaped and furnished courtyard terrace with gas grills and communal dining area; a rooftop garden with outdoor shower and Manhattan views; a fitness center; bicycle storage for rent; and private storage that is available for purchase. High-end retailers are just a short walk away including Barneys Coop, Rag & Bone, Shinola, as well as fast fashion purveyors like H&M and Uniqlo. For those looking to travel out of the neighborhood, the Manhattan-bound C train is across the street and Atlantic Terminal is a 10-minute walk away -- with nine Manhattan-bound subway lines as well as a Long Island Rail Road Station, providing access to the entire length of Long Island. waverlybrooklyn.com | 212-367-7500 or visit the sales gallery located on-site at 500 Waverly Ave, Brooklyn (by appointment only).

VINE SHOWCASES HOBOKEN BEYOND THE HUDSON RIVER WATERFRONT By George Cahn

F

or those viewing Hoboken, NJ from Manhattan, the row of new residential buildings and picturesque parks that line its portion of the Hudson River waterfront provides the only visual evidence of the square mile city’s rise as a vibrant, urban destination. Venture further in, however, and its appeal beyond the waterfront comes into focus. A lively bar and nightlife scene, diverse dining options, trendy boutiques and a healthy dose of music and food festivals deliver a pulsating lifestyle experience. Called a “walker’s paradise” by Walk Score, where the average resident can reach 21 restaurants, bars and coffee shops within a fiveminute walk of his or her home, Hoboken is also a commuter’s dream, with convenient PATH trains and ferry service whisking riders to midtown and downtown Manhattan in minutes. Hoboken’s range of residential options also fuels its wide-spread appeal, from modern rental and condominium buildings along the waterfront and inland to masterfully-restored brownstones dotting quiet, tree-lined streets.

68 | resident.com

One of the newest offerings to rise within Hoboken is Vine, an 11-story luxury rental building introduced by Bijou Properties and Intercontinental Real Estate Corporation along the City’s western edge. Located at 900 Monroe Street adjacent to the 9th Street Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Station, Vine features 135 sophisticated one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, indoor and outdoor amenities and commuter convenience. “Hoboken continues to draw residents from both sides of the river with its charm, character, convenience and vibrancy,” says Jaqueline Urgo, President of The Marketing Directors, the exclusive marketing and leasing agent for Vine. “Vine complements that lifestyle with a modern, amenity-rich living experience designed for today’s urban enthusiasts.” Stylish residences priced from $3,115 a month (net effective rent) boast designer and energy-efficient features, including sustainable bamboo flooring, oversized windows and kitchens and baths with Frigidaire and Bosch Energy Star appliances, granite countertops and modern cabinetry. Lavish baths with porcelain tile are also a staple at Vine. Residences

are available for immediate occupancy. A full suite of amenities is highlighted by an outdoor rooftop terrace offering a pool, expansive sundeck, individual barbeque stations, separate outdoor lounge areas, poolside sunbeds and lush landscaping. Vine also boasts a clubroom and fitness center, bike storage, free shuttle service to the nearby Hoboken PATH station and an onsite automated parking facility. Complementary street-level retail space includes a Daycare Center, and there’s an adjacent 7,000 square-foot public park. Vine has been built in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) standards for LEED ® certification. It will be the fourth LEEDcertified building developed by Bijou Properties in Hoboken. www.vinehoboken.com | 201-386-VINE (8463) The Marketing Directors’ onsite Leasing Office is located at 900 Monroe Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030.

BROOKLYN STYLE COMES TO NJ GOLD COAST

SILKLOFTS RENTAL CONVERSION IN BAYONNE By George Cahn

A

big dose of Brooklyn style has hit the New Jersey Gold Coast with the completion of SilkLofts, a unique rental conversion in Bayonne offering soaring living spaces and an unusual array of lifestyle amenities. The new collection of 85 loft rental homes is located in the former Maidenform Factory which was the birthplace of the modern bra. During World War II, the factory also manufactured military parachutes as well as carrier pigeon vests. Reborn as a modern, urban living experience, the converted five-story brick building is located at the intersection of 18th Street and Avenue E – just 800 feet from the 22nd Street Light Rail station and minutes from Jersey City, Hoboken and Manhattan. A separate building overlooks a landscaped interior courtyard and features a limited offering of Artist Lofts. The homes combine dramatic architectural elements over 100 years old with contemporary finishes and appointments. Residents also enjoy unique amenities designed for social interaction, outstanding views and a commuter-friendly location, according to SilkLofts, LLC, which transformed the century-old former factory into the new signature residential property.

70 | resident.com

A variety of floor plans are offered, ranging from 568 to more than 1,400 square feet of soaring living space at monthly rental rates ranging from $1,500 to $3,400 – a far cry from Brooklyn rents. Masterfully designed to reflect the property’s historic roots, homes combine 19th-century restored elements that represent the building’s past – such as exposed heavy timber columns and brick – with modern finishes and appointments that innovatively meld it into the 21st century. “The Maidenform factory has been an iconic building in Bayonne for over 100 years,” said Doug Stern, president of SilkLoftts, LLC. “We’ve embraced the historic charm of the building and used it as a foundation for a new urban residential destination that rivals similarly-inspired residences in areas like Brooklyn, but at a price point that offers considerable consumer value.” A mix of old and new is found throughout the loft residences, including soaring 12-to-20-foot ceiling heights, mahogany front doors, exposed brick and wood beams, bamboo and oak gunstock wood floors, gourmet kitchens with Quartz countertops and Chef Islands, and washer and dryers. Bathed in natural light through newly-installed, oversized energy efficient argon filled factory windows, the residences offer a variety of views, including the New York City skyline and Bayonne Bridge.

Wanting residents to “love where they live,” the developer has fashioned a creative suite of amenities for SilkLofts to foster a close-knit atmosphere. An outdoor, landscaped pocket park features an herb garden, barbeque, fire pit and a fully-operational pizza oven that’s ventilated through an old smokestack. There’s also an on-site fitness center, secured on-site parking and a welcoming lobby with historic photos of the original Maidenform factory. “The definition of luxury is changing, particularly in urban areas,” said Mr. Stern. “We’ve shifted away from cold lobbies and theater rooms to more socially-interactive spaces and uses where residents can connect with each other. That was my goal for the pocket park, fire pit and pizza oven. I wanted to create a comfortable, casual setting where neighbors would gather and socialize. We’re delighted that our residents are taking full advantage of it.” SilkLofts has been designed to LEED Silver standards (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) and was built in accordance with U.S. Green Building Council guidelines for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. Among the green features are the use of bamboo flooring, energy efficient appliances and recycled materials. silklofts.com | 201-488-3926 | info@silklofts.com

SUCCESS & ACHIEVEMENT WITH

GIL DEZER By JENNIFER AZZOLINI

A

s one of the most prolific oceanfront property owners in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, Michael Dezer launched his company 45 years ago with a strong focus on the commercial real estate business in New York City. With his successful run, Resident Magazine asked Michael Dezer about his beginnings and his road to success. As a graduate of Pace University, Dezer received his degree in Marketing and Advertising followed by an MBA in marketing management, and later a a doctorate of commercial sciences. While going to college he went to Madison Avenue and became a consultant, before launching a direct marketing company. After landing financial institutions for his first major clients he purchased his first building, a 12 story commercial property on 19th Street between 6th and 7th avenues. Across the street he noticed they were developing loft buildings so Michael stated “let’s go into the loft business” and began making deals with many of the owners, thus a legacy was born.

“We worked hard, and built our empire

resident.com | 73

In Manhattan, Dezer Development owns and manages numerous commercial properties in Chelsea and the Flatiron District. He began building his empire in the early 1970’s acquiring buildings used by industrial/manufacturing tenants. His vision led him to revamp factory buildings and transform them into luxury offices in New York City. Dezer became the first developer to do so, and positioned the Chelsea area as an up and coming district. When others thought the area was failing, he turned it into a core spot for fashion, multinational company headquarters, offices, and created loft style living spaces. His New York portfolio holds more than 20 commercial buildings, 8 commercial co-ops, 1 luxury residential loft- which extends to over 1.3 million square feet of space in the Chelsea and Flatiron neighborhoods. When leasing loft space, these high ceiling open plan units leave endless options to customize your space. His 12 story loft building proudly features

newly renovated lobbies and great oversized windows at 27 West 20th street. The building on 150 West 25th Street offers sprawling spaces up to 5,500 square feet, with a beautiful attended lobby. Four blocks from Penn Station is a 19 story building with stunning views and large spaces at 150 West 28th Street. In 1985, Michael started his legacy in South Florida, with over 27 oceanfront acres. Today they are the largest owners of oceanfront property in Sunny Isles Beach, owning over 1,000 hotel rooms amongst several other condominium and resort properties including the Travelodge Monaco Beach Resort and Days Hotel Thunderbird Beach Resort. As the President of Dezer Development, Gil Dezer is credited as one of the youngest developers of luxury high rise residential & condo/hotel properties in the United States. By introducing

brand partnerships, Gil Dezer is changing the way South Florida real estate is valued. He has collaborated with Donald J. Trump which led to the Trump Organization’s first real estate venture in South Florida. The Trump Grande Ocean Resort and Residences and Trump Towers in Sunny Isles Beach are two collaborative developments that have been met with much success. Gil has always managed to be successful despite economic times in the real estate market and landed two noteworthy accomplishments from 2009 to 2010 when he made enough profit to pay off Trump Royale’s construction loan and Trump Tower II and III’s mortgage for a combined grand total of $475 million. As a maverick in his field, Dezer is exceptional with forging brand partnerships with real estate. In 2012, Gil entered into a licensing agreement with Porsche Design Group and expanded the luxury brand into the real estate

market. Dezer also showcased his patented robotic parking system in the 60-story Porsche Design Tower where the “Dezervator” allows residents to park their vehicles in sky garages, further elevating the concept of technology and luxury. This success led to a partnership between Dezer Development and The Armani Group to launch their first residential tower in the U.S., Residences by Armani/Casa. Gil’s professional achievements earned him the position as President and Chairman Emeritus of the Developers & Builders Alliance and he also won the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s R.E.A.L. Award for Residential Real Estate in 2012, as well as the Platinum Personal Achievement Award for Sales Director of the year for Trump Grande Ocean Resort & Residences for three consecutive years. Aside from building their empire, Michael and Gil are very active in the community with many philanthropic endeavors and adventurous pursuits. Michael Dezer has opened his own Dezer Collection Museum and Pavilion which showcases his extraordinary rare automobile collection of over 1,000 American and European classics accumulated over 50 years. In addition to the vehicles on display, the museum also constitutes one of the largest collections of James Bond props and vehicles in the world. Gil is also part of the Mount Sinai Medical Center Foundation, Young President of the Miami Heart Institute, a member of the Florida Friends of Israeli Defense Forces, and continues to support many American and Israeli charities.

DINING OUT SEPTEMBER 2016

By Jennifer Azzolini

As we transition into September, New York City comes alive with an array of new restaurant openings as well as seasonal menu changes to reflect the bounties of fall. Here we explore a cozy vegan West Village spot, late night noshing in Columbus Circle, a secret rooftop garden, an Upper East Side Italian icon, and a turn of the century speakeasy steak house.

LADYBIRD

127 Macdougal Street; Between Bleecker St and 4th St. (212) 475-2246 Housed in an elegant white French style boudoir is Greenwich Village’s newcomer, Ladybird which serves a tasty vegan tapas menu. Restaurateur Ravi DeRossi and chef Daphne Cheng created a seasonal vegetable focused menu, where a percentage of proceeds go to the BEAST Foundation that is dedicated to end animal cruelty. Start off with the vegetable charcuterie which comes with smoked carrots, beet chorizo, mushroom pâté, assorted nut milk based cheeses, and figs. Or try a house specialty- the Saganaki, a flaming nut based mozzarella, smoked carrot and gremolata. To top it all off, choose from a handful of noteworthy dairy free desserts such as the Saffron & Chocolate Semifreddo, Marcona Almond & Thyme Syrup, and Churros that has Crème Fraîche, Dukkah that consists of nuts, spices, & herbs, and lastly Cinnamon Chocolate. The creative cocktail menu was designed by Ariel Acre that uses cold pressed vegetable and fruit juices. The Red Rail is made with fresh beet juice, Niepoort Tawny Port, bitter amaro, and lime. For a slushy made with avocado, shiso syrup and sparkling wine, the Dodo is a must try. Another standout is the Himalayan Quail, that comes with fresh tangerine juice, French dry apple cider, Thai Chili and lime salt.

Landmarc Restaurant

10 Columbus Circle; Third Floor. (212) 823-6123 Marc Murphy’s Landmarc is a neighborhood favorite in both the Tribeca and Columbus Circle locations where diners come for his signature fare that blends the best of Italian and French cuisine. Though NYC is a city that doesn’t sleep, finding food after a Lincoln Center performance can be a daunting task on a weeknight. With its convenient location near Lincoln Center, diners can now grab a post performance bite with Murphy’s specialty late night menu served from 10 pm until midnight. Enjoy elevated comfort fare such fried artichokes, fried blue cheese stuffed olives, and pommes diablo (Crispy Potatoes & Spicy Aioli). Other indulgent highlights are the Grilled Sausage, Smoked Salmon Deviled Eggs, Chili Glazed Sweetbreads, Poutine, and Bordelaise Dip. Landmarc’s Mixologists will also be serving their own personal creations with a different “Team Specialty Libation” each night. Or try one of kind craft beers available on their BeerMenus app.

Bill’s Townhouse

57 east 54 St 212-518-2727 Step back in time to the turn of the century at Bill’s Townhouse in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, which evokes the ambiance of a speakeasy hidden within the gracious walls of an English townhouse. The dark wood paneled walls are adorned with vintage paintings, antique maps and relics of yesteryear that surround plush dark leather banquettes lending itself to a power lunch scene. The current owner/operator is Host Restaurants, (a hospitality group) founded by seasoned restauranteur Curt Huegel (formerly / co-founder of LDV Hospitality), and pays homage to the past with rich Old School American dishes such as baked clams, lobster thermador, charred veal chop and scallops newberg, and adds a contemporary twist that has returned Bill’s Townhouse back to its glorious past. Downstairs the charming tavern is a perfectly preserved capsule of New York City’s past with old boxing momentos, an antique bar, and a live pianist that adds to the bygone atmosphere. Bill’s Townhouse is a perfect backdrop to sip classic cocktails such as a Manhattan or Vesper Martini while walking down memory lane.

CHEF GONZALO COLIN CANTINA ROOFTOP BY Cecilia Morales

S

tar Wars heart throb Diego Luna and Mexican pop singer Thalía are both fans of Chef Gonzalo Colin, who is the executive chef at Cantina Rooftop at 605 W 48th St. When it comes to cuisine, the flavors of a home-cooked meal are sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face. Cantina Rooftop’s Executive Chef Gonzalo takes the idea of a good home-cooked meal to a new level. With his impressive culinary background and Mexican roots, Colin brings a whole new meaning to the term “Fine Dining.” September brings the news that, due to customer demand, Cantina Roof Top will be open all year around, including all the major holidays.

THE SEARCH FOR NEW DISHES Although a native of Mexico City, Colin spent a year traveling to cities and villages in Mexico to bring back the best recipes and dishes to Cantina. “ I was searching for various ways of cooking, using all local herbs and the different techniques that each valley prides itself in,” he said. “From the southern-most part of Mexico to the northern part, the flavors change but are only 1% of what Mexico has to share. “

CULINARY INSPIRATION While these flavors and techniques helped him create a delectable menu, Colin’s culinary inspiration stems from his childhood. “My cooking is part of the love and respect I have of my Mexican roots,” he said. “ I had the privilege of growing up with great cooks, my Abuela Goya and my Mother Sabina as well as my father. I learned from them and tried all types of Mexican cuisine. However, Colin’s incorporation of other cooking styles is what gives his Mexican-American fusion menu its edge. “At 16, I started learning the French and Mediterranean techniques working under Chef Scott Bryan. These two experiences are the reason for the creativity and

90 | resident.com

uniqueness of my food at Cantina. This sets my kitchen apart from all the others.”

STAR STUDDED SPACE Cantina Rooftop includes a climate controlled retractable rooftop and offers a selection of ceviche and tostadas in addition to the restaurant’s signature dish, Lubina Chilena Al Pibil (Chilean Sea bass) and Pollo Campestre (free range chicken) with Mole Negro. They’ll keep things fresh with their new fall and winter menus launching this month. Colin hopes his restaurant’s Mexican-based cooking and refined style will keep discerning dinners coming back. The space has already attracted Keith Urban, Sarah Jessica Parker, Alicia Keys, Cynthia Nixon and P. Diddy.

SEXY AMBIANCE “Now more than ever, Mexican cuisine is recognized as one of the top cuisines in the world,” said Chef Gonzalo “New York is a city of authenticity and innovation so we are bringing that same authenticity with modern Mexican cuisine to our clients.” As to the décor, he explains, “ More people are traveling to Mexico and experiencing its authentic flavors, and I want them to feel that Cantina is a part of this rich Mexican tradition.”

CHEF’S CHALLENGES Behind the scenes Colin lives a fast paced life “The adrenaline and the challenges that each kitchen gives has no price,” he said. “Working with different menus, cooking fresh products, creating new menus which are unique to every restaurant, helped to shape my style. Learning to please my guests, as a chef is paramount for me. Doing what I love and executing it well, provides me with an indescribable satisfaction.” Cantinarooftop.com | (212) 957-1700

THE NEWEST JEWEL IN

SOUTH BEACH

By Hillary Latos

J

ust a few steps away for the powdery sand beaches of Miami, the 1 Hotel South Beach, located at 23rd Street on Collins Avenue, resides at the northern tip of SOBE. And, although just a few blocks away from the iconic heart of the Art Deco district, 1 Hotel offers all the trendy vibe and luxurious amenities you would expect to find at a high-end hotel in the neighborhood. It serves as the perfect basecamp from which to explore and experience all the culture and eye candy that exists on every street corner in sultry South Beach. Better yet, the hotel has Tesla cars available to take you anywhere within a three-mile radius of the property so you’ll never be too far from any of the action but will enjoy peace and quiet when trying to get some shut eye. Formerly the Gansevoort, (and then the Perry), the 1 Hotel South Beach opened last year after an extensive

renovation. The building’s white façade and lush greenery welcomes guests with a sense of calm. The entire 1 hotel brand itself uses eco-friendly practices whenever they can; evident from the moment you arrive with white and beige tones in the lobby, along with wooden accents, making for a tranquil setting while checking in. There are four pools located here as well as a kids’ club. And, although all travelers will feel welcome, most of the guests tend to be couples. The rooftop pool is adults-only; always a welcome addition to any hotel, and their beach club stretches 600 feet along the Miami coastline. Rooms range from a 3,500-square foot Presidential Suite to a 700-square foot King Suite. Some rooms have balconies with views of the glistening ocean but all rooms offer custom hemp-blend mattress by Keetsa, 100% organic cotton sheets, and a triplefiltered water shower system.

Last month the hotel unveiled their new rooftop restaurant concept: “watr,” South Beach’s first poke restaurant. Located 18 floors above the ocean, “watr” will specialize in sushi and poke, paired with exceptional handcrafted cocktails. At its helm, Executive Chef, Fernando Cruz draws inspiration from the hotels natural oceanic atmosphere. The menu features innovative HawaiianJapanese dishes with locally sourced seafood as a commitment to the hotel’s sustainability efforts. The rooftop restaurant will also introduce a dedicated Cocktail Pairing Connoisseur, who will create vibrant cocktails to enhance flavors and compliment the culinary creations. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and will including poke dishes such as octopus, salmon and tuna served with quinoa or brown rice. The alfresco setting adds to the entire experience and it’s sure to be a huge success on the South Beach scene. www.1hotels.com

estled between Long Island’s North and South Forks, Shelter Island is a perfectly dreamy weekend jaunt to the East End that offers a true escape from the bustling city and ever-happening nearby Hamptons. The Chequit is set on a quiet hilltop among some of the most fabulous Victorian cottages. First built as a religious retreat in 1872, the property was later transformed into a well-regarded getaway in the 1940s, attracting many celebrities and movie stars including Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe. And for good reason. This hotel continues to embody the spirit of its past while also maintaining an authentic yet comfortable experience. In sheer Shelter Island style, it remains genuine to the island’s more rustic, true-to-life sense of heritage while also complementing the other properties on the island like Sunset Beach. The design is simple chic featuring a soothing nautical palette of pale blues, pinks, and whites. The rooms are large, airy and include amenities one would expect at a luxury resort such as fine linens, fresh-smelling Bigelow bath products, and attention to details like chic Turkish beach towels and renovated bathrooms and oversized tubs. Comfortable and elegant, yet also maintains the coziness, care, and attention of a small inn. IN WITH THE OLD & THE NEW

HGU NEW YORK By Jay Angel

A

t the heart of NoMad stands a quaint and art-adorned luxury hotel named HGU New York. The exterior dates back to the 1905 Beaux Arts structure that has been restored to its former glory. Each corner of this hotel combines the old and the new in terms of design and ambience. Old facades with modern touches such as light fixtures, plenty of contemporary art paintings, and luxurious furniture intermingled fluidly with each other. Right as you enter through the double doors, you are welcomed to a brightly lit hallway. The hotel’s lobby bar located right next to the entrance contains fantastic seating areas, two modern chandeliers that exposes the filaments of each bulb, and a bar station near the entrance. Further along past the elevators leading up to your room has the receptionist area with marble flooring and tasteful and minimalistic aesthetics. Right next to it is the 1905 Lounge that has its own bar, fireplace, and unique seating areas to give comfort and pleasure to the mind and body. This room is especially

interesting because of its restored ceilings, classic bookshelves, and an array of even more artworks and paintings adorning the walls and shelves all hand-picked by owner Michael Namer. A wooden walled elevator brings guests up to their designated rooms, provided by the courteous and gracious staff of HGU New York. Once outside the elevator, shades of gray walls surround the corridor and rooms beyond do the doors leading up to your temporary home. There’s also a New York walkup style staircases leading above or below to have quick access to other floors. Finally, once inside your room, you are greeted by a feel of an actual modern apartment in New York City. The King Suite provides guests with maximum space and comfort. A small study table and chair is placed right next to the entrance. A living room area lies ahead, which is finely furnished with a sofa that can turn into a queen bed and HDTV. The minibar and mini fridge stocked with essentials is neatly placed in this area as well.

The bedroom houses a king sized bed, Frette bed linens, and extremely comfortable throw blankets to envelop you while you sleep. Another HDTV is also mounted here. Each of these rooms also has custom Turkish patchwork rugs to highlight the wood flooring. The closet is filled with necessities such as slippers, safe for your important items, hair dryer, umbrella, and bathrobes. Their bathrooms are designed to have a NYC pre-war style, and it comes complete with hygienic necessities graciously provided by C.O. Bigelow. If the bathroom gets too cold, there are heated fixtures located conveniently on the ceiling providing warmth while inside. HGU New York has it all. It will give you a taste of true New York living and a deeper appreciation of art at the same time. 34 East 32nd Street, New York, NY 10016 www.hgunyc.com

The menu features flavorful Italian plates great for sharing like the heritage pork & beef meatballs al Forno and the grilled octopus salad. I’m definitely a fan of the wood fired pizza fungi.

THE NEXT ART WORLD SUPERSAR

URBANITE

A

rt world gorgons are increasingly agog over the Arizona based figurative artist Michael Carson. Critics have dubbed him

‘’the post-millennial Toulouse-Lautrec’’ who of course was the famous French Impressionist painter known for his classic canvases documenting the French bourgeois of his day. If all this ‘artsy-fartsy’ hyperbole is all a bit too much to digest then let GW break it down for you. Michael Carson is the most attuned figurative artist in America today. He is the modern master of color and light and his pseudo-realist portraits of the bon chic and bon genre of our time astonish and delight and his signature strokes are immediately identifiable. A graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design his volition is to emphasize the relationships of color and light and allow the texture of his brush to move a viewers eye through the art. Like Jean-Antoine Watteau or Henri de ToulouseLautrec who back in the 18th Century were regaled for their ability to define their times the lives and loves and the ‘fete galantes’ (grand parties) of their era. This American artist sets his glamorous settings in the bars, the clubs, cafes and dance studios - all the usual haunts of the beaumonde of contemporary Americana. His works, all oil on canvas, glow with a wide lens perspective. And his subjects are neither exaggerated and neither subtle despite the ‘’Pallor Noir’’ as GW now dubs the signature palette backdrop that makes a Michael Carson canvas immediately identifiable. As the gallerist Georges Berges who discovered this modern-day Holbein astutely sums - ‘’Michael Carson has a soft, sophisticated touch. His work just rings true and having been a huge fan of his work for sometime, I am absolutely thrilled to have him now exclusive to the Georges Berges Gallery and to be presenting his first one-man show this September 8 through October 8, 2016 here in New York City.’’ What is most notable about this artist is the deft way he brings to life the emotion, the effortless nonchalance and cool -that perfect je ne sais quoi. ‘’I am most interested in the subtleties of facial expression and spend most of my time on my subjects face and hands because for me they tell the story.’’ the artist declares. And that story

will surely surge to the forefront of art conscious New Yorkers come this coming Fashion Week season when the artist’ first solo show debuts at the Georges Berges Gallery at 462 West Broadway this early Autumn. GEORGE WAYNE - Talk to me about the symbiosis of color and light with regards to the texture of your work. MICHAEL CARSON - It really changes from piece to piece. The connection between all these things is always there. Almost as if they are one in the same thing. I try not to differentiate these to be solitary ideas but rather, to just paint and allow for my instincts to come through. To have faith in these artistic instincts. GW - Do you call yourself a portrait artist? MC - I don’t consider myself a portrait artist. I consider myself a figurative artist. The distinction being that a portrait artist is attempting the likeness of their subjects and although I use a model or reference in my work, it is imperative that I have the freedom to deviate from it at any time to achieve the finished result that I want. This is to me far more important to me then any academic exercise.

or moods. GW - What themes are your feeding off that will inspire your show this September in New York City at the Georges Berges Gallery? MC - I look at every painting as its own entity. If I do stay on a specific theme it is almost always and unconscious decision. I tend to stand in front of a blank canvas and allow the ideas to come to me as I work. Its like free association. Of course, with that you have a bag of tricks that you have been amassing that you pull from. so The work can look like a collection but the intent is to give each piece its own life. I love the large multi figured compositions that imply models backstage or people waiting. The idea is not to give it a specific narrative but rather create the composition and allow the intricacies and details of the pose and expression to allow the viewer to create their own story based on where they are coming from or the mood they happen to be in at that time.

differentiates one from another. The good experiments stay with you and travel into future paintings just as the failures teach you what is not working. One is not more important than the other. As long as you learn from both.

GW - What was your graduate thesis at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design? MC - It was horrible. I had the maturity of a 10 year old. I was a design student at the time. I had never even picked up a brush yet. I knew that I was heading towards a creative future but the idea of painting didn’t even come into the picture for another 6 years. I literally found painting by accident. Or rather that painting found me.

GW - Would you consider yourself a ‘’modern master of the figurative study’’ ? That is GW’s inherent declaration here! MC - I consider myself a student of figurative study. Always learning. Always wanting and waiting for something new to excite me and motivate me. I never want to be someone who isn’t searching. I never will consider myself and expert. Time has taught me this. As I look at older pieces i’m conscious of how the work is evolving. I realize that I will always be a student. I’m hopeful of this as well.

GW - How have you been feeling with regards to this show in New York? What has been the mood in your studio down there? What has been the source of inspiration? MC - Of course the idea of having an opening in New York is exciting. But as an artist, an important element is the deadline. The motivation to know that at this date, I’ll have to stand in front of the entire body of work and present it to the public. As far as inspiration, it is still the same thing that has always motivated me. The figure. That is a starting place. The other things that have been driving me is the experimentation of technique as well as material. Finding new ways to manipulate paint or surface to change the feel and mood of a piece. Its the thing that keeps the work fresh and exciting in the studio. If I find myself getting bored during the process of creating, it is the death of that piece. It’s about constant evolution and experimentation .

GW - How did you end up in Phoenix, Arizona? And how has that move influenced your work? MC - It was always my intention to travel and leave my home town of Minneapolis. It just naturally changes to work. Again, it is an unconscious thing that happens. As an artist I just exist and observe and create. And all the colors, music, people and culture of a place just sinks in. I think that is my job as an artist. In fact, I wish that I could move more often. I don’t think I would have ever considered the southwest as a destination but my wife’s job brought us here and I thank God it happened. Its when I first realized the power of travel as it related to my art.

The mood is bordering on solitude and inward thinking. Its a reflection on what i am observing. The subtleties in the expression that tell you an inward dialogue is happening even though there is hardly anything happening at all. Look around you. Most people are appearing to do nothing. Or some mundane job or activity. Its whats going on inside that is exciting. So people should be able to view my work and take from it different ideas

GW -What would you consider the signifiers of your work? When I see a Michael Carson canvas GW immediately knows! I love that your work has such a strong signature. MC - Technique quickly becomes everything to me during the process os painting. I love to spend time on faces and subtle poses that tell a story of it in itself. But the act of putting paint on surface is equally exciting to me. It’s here that I think the artist’s “fingerprint” is found. That thing that

I love to have this duality in my work. On one side of the coin you have a painting that you can look into. It is a space with a figure and depth and perspective. On the other side, I love to force the viewer to the surface by manipulating the paint. By blending fore and background. by printing flat patterns that do not follow the form they lay on top of. By allowing drips to cut through the different depths of the piece. By wiping away paint to create a stained translucent effect. All these things and more. They all add to change the viewers perspective and hopefully, force them to really get up close and see the brush work and the layering and other things that happening on the surface.

GW - Inspiration you say ‘’comes from architectural interiors and fashion’’. I love that statement from you. Give some more detail and explain what you mean. MC - Im just into these things. I would have loved to be an architect or designer. I would have loved to be a photographer or a profession musician or a furniture designer. These things as well as other artistic ventures have always inspired me . And luckily, I get to bring these into my work. Its subtle and not always evident, but I’m always delving into other forms of creativity. And it always comes out in the work in some regard. That said, the beauty of painting a person is that its always a challenge. You can always push yourself to go to different places with the figure. I am a self described people watcher. And I think it stems from wanting to know more about other people as well as myself. The face is just so complex and I love that one tiny stoke of paint can dramatically change the entire feel of a piece. That feels powerful to me. Its like a drug

STIMULATING THEATER IN THE CITY By Barry Bassis

S

hould we negotiate or even communicate with our enemies or ban Muslim immigrants? The issues at stake in the current election surface in different ways on New York stages.

Oslo is a three-hour play by J.T. Rogers about the negotiations between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) that led to the 1993 Oslo Accords. It sounds dry but actually Oslo is an exciting and thought-provoking work. The play tells the little known story of a Norwegian couple, who decided on their own to bring about peace in the Middle East. Director Bartlett Sher’s production at Lincoln Center’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater is superb. The dazzling cast is headed by Jefferson Mays and Jennifer Ehle as the husband and wife shrewdly maneuvering these violent foes into recognizing each other. The end of the play brings the action up to the troubled present. The script is not only thoughtful but full of witty lines and emotional resonance, as when two of the enemies discover that their daughters have the same names. Oslo has ended its run at Newhouse but will be returning next March at LCT’s Beaumont Theater.

Quietly at Irish Repertory Theatre is an import from the Abbey Theatre, a riveting play by Owen McCafferty, flawlessly directed by Jimmy Fay. The drama is set in an Irish pub in Belfast, where two men meet. Forty years earlier, one (a Protestant) had been responsible for the bombing that killed the father of the other (a Catholic). The third man is the bartender, a Polish immigrant. During the sometimes violent confrontation, the men (who are of the same age) explain what went through their minds at the time of the bombing and in the years since. The production is fortunate in having the original cast from the Abbey: Declan Conlon, Patrick O’Kane, and Robert Zawadzki. Though previously scheduled to run through September 11, performances have now been extended through September 25. What happens when negotiations fail? The answer is war, which is depicted in Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida, the second of the summer’s presentations at the Public Theater’s Delacorte Theater in Central Park. The action takes place in the seventh year of the Trojan War. Director Daniel Sullivan has updated

the work to the present so that it resembles Iraq or Afghanistan. The deadly clash of nations is based on the beautiful Helen leaving her husband Menelaus for the Trojan prince Paris. The title characters are another couple in love, though politics gets in the way. The legendary figures from the Iliad and the Odyssey don’t seem especially heroic. Ulysses is presented as a businessman, while Achilles sounds as if he graduated from Ridgemont High. Troilus and Cressida is usually categorized as one of Shakespeare’s “problem plays” but I’m not convinced Sullivan solved the problems. In any event, there are some impressive performances, notably John Glover as the tart-tongued Pandarus. Eh Dah: Questions for my Father was presented as part of the New York Musical Festival. The autobiographical work was performed by the remarkably talented Aya Aziz, who also wrote the book, music and lyrics. While Muslims are portrayed by many of our politicians as the Other, Aziz shows that they are not that different from other immigrant groups, trying to make the transition from the old world to the new. Well directed by Corinne Proctor, Eh Dah is often funny and moving and deserves to be revived.

BROADWAY’S MUST WATCH By Kristen Oliveri

PARAMOUR: AN ACTOR’S GROUNDBREAKING ROLE

WAITRESS: EQUAL PARTS TALENT & LOVE

J

essie Mueller has become a Broadway darling, in part due to her stunning portrayal as Carole King in Beautiful and also in (equal) part by her fearlessness of taking on complex characters. The transition from Beautiful to Waitress was easy for her as the actress gave herself a break in between to recharge her mind and her body; before eventually jumping into this new dynamic, head first. “I fell in love with Waitress while I was still doing Beautiful. The transition felt natural,” she said. “I was able to close a really wonderful chapter and begin a new one that I really felt passionate about.” Cirque du Soleil - Paramour. Photo by Richard Termine

T

he unique role of AJ Golden in Cirque du Soleil’s Paramour represented a part like no other, that the lead Jeremy Kushnier had ever undertaken. This groundbreaking show is the first for Cirque du Soleil in which it marries Broadwaystyle plot lines, love songs and dance numbers with their own bailiwick of stunning acrobatics. “Any time you get to be involved in a brand new Broadway show is amazing,” began Kushnier, “but getting to work on Cirque du Soleil’s first ever Broadway musical has been beyond exciting!” Kushnier has spent about 20 years as a New York actor and through his myriad of experiences, he’s come to a realization: that any career in the arts is non-linear. “I have been fortunate to work with tremendous artists throughout the course of my career and our show is no different in that regard. From our leads Ruby Lewis

and Ryan Vona, to our dancers, to our amazing acrobats and circus performers---we have a stellar group that I am proud to be a part of.” As for what attracted him to the role of Golden, a film producer in Hollywood’s Golden Age who seeks to control the object of his affection, it was all about those challenges that drew Kushnier to the character. “For the role of AJ, and I think the show as a whole, it is about finding a way to live honestly in this heightened environment. In a musical it’s one thing to try and find your reality when you break into song, but for this show there’s the acrobatic and cirque specific moments that you also have to wrestle with a little as an actor,” he explained. “But I truly believe when we as a company meet on that stage at the Lyric Theater, that’s exactly what we’re doing. We’re finding our specific reality as a company in this world that we create every night at Paramour.”

love, hope, forgiveness and redemption. “Jenna is such a beautiful embodiment of someone who is hopeless finding hope, and in the most unexpected places. I think that’s what reaches people. She (and all the characters) are so relatable. When people are moved, that feels rewarding to me. A message of love is necessary in this world. And it’s a critical and crucial time for it,” said Mueller.

But not only did the message drive Mueller, but also the opportunity to collaborate with singer/songwriter/ lyricist Sara Bareilles. Mueller said she is drawn to her undeniable talent and her warmth as a human being. She was drawn to this role because “People love her music,” began Muof the show’s underlying message of eller. “It gets into their souls.”

BOOKS du JOUR SEPTEMBER 2016 By Frederic Colier

“The Land of Enchantment” by Leigh Stein Penguin Random House $22.00 212 pages

“Between Two Fires” by Mark Noce Thomas Dunn Books $25.99 327 pages

“Leaving Blyhe River” by Catherine Ryan Hyde Lake Union $14.95 314 pages

“Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies,” by Ross King Bloomsbury $30.00, 404 pages

“An Abbreviated Life” by Ariel Leve Harper $26.99 274 pages

Set in the New Mexico, “The Land of Enchantment,” is a riveting coming-of-age memoir about young love and its impact. The story opens with the author receiving a phone call from her brother to tell that her ex-boyfriend, Jason, has been killed in road accident. Jason’s death causes our protagonist to recall the difficult life they shared together and forces her to contemplate tough questions while grieving. How is it possible to fall in love with someone who causes so much pain? Why is it so hard to walk away from this type of love? How can love be so destructive? The engaging memoir traces the psychological evolution of an abusive relationship, while raising larger issues. Why are women who step forward so often shamed and bullied?

This book will appeal to the fans of Game of Thrones. Here the story takes place in 597 when Saxon Barbarians are about to destroy medieval Wales. So? you may say. The reason the book made this month’s list is its main character, Lady Branwen. We are miles away from giants with inflated biceps performing miraculous acts. She is a young woman in a world of fierce warriors, very much like Boudica was when she organized her uprising against the Romans, courageous and determined, which always makes for captivating hero. Lady Branwen seeks unity to push back the enemy, but the trajectory get skewed when she falls for a man she cannot have, opening a good dilemma. She sees herself forced to choose between her people and the man she loves.

You may not remember who C. R. Hyde is, but suffices to tell you that she is the author of “Pay it Forward,” which was adapted later into a film with Kevin Spacey, for you to say “of course.” This new story takes place in the Blythe River National Wilderness, which I discovered was in California. There, a young teenager, Ethan, decides to go looking for his missing father, after he disappeared from his cabin, and rangers decided to abandon their rescue mission. Totally unprepared, Ethan ventures nonetheless into the wilderness and quickly learn the roughness of nature: the punishing sun, the swirling rapids, and the strength derived from pushing yourself past your limits . . . but the story is not an exploration of one’s courage in the face of adversity, but rather a true confrontation regarding forgiveness, as Ethan must decide whether or not his father is worth to be saved at all.

You may ask yourself why, as the title reveals, do we need another book, or rather a biography about Claude Monet, the painter, when there have been countless renditions. But to Ross King’s credit, his differs from the others. For a start, King’s research focuses mainly on the last 15 years of the painter’s life, just before WWI, when the artist was already in his 70s and saw no reason to keep on painting. He had lost his wife and eldest son. Crippling cataracts severely impaired his craft, and he suffered from nagging anxiety and depression, further aggravated by the arrival of new artistic painting sensibilities, cubist and Dadaist. When most of us would have tossed the brushes aside, Monet decided to start painting again but on a giant scale, producing the colossal legendary paintings from his garden of Giverny. An incredible story strewn with friendships, notably Clémenceau’s, gives this book, which reads like a detective novel, full of intrigues, a welcome denouement.

If you think you had it rough in childhood, think again. This book is not for the faint of heart. Ariel describes here perhaps the most pervasive aspect of childhood, growing up with instable parents, in this case, a parent -- her mother, who she describes as “ a poet, an artist, a self-appointed troublemaker and attention seeker.” In other words, a brutal cocktail guaranteeing to lead to instability and make the rooms spin. And instability is what Ariel confronts on a daily rollercoaster of emotional tug of war dance. The most harrowing part is when she recognizes that her own life, years after her mother’s death, is still been impacted by the relationship. Sound familiar? Ariel’s gripping tortured confessions are not. They take you to the edge of the unbearable at time. If your heart does not break here . . . nothing will. This book makes a great argument for a parenting license.
