editor’s note
FALL’S NEW BEGINNINGS
S
eptember is a time of new beginnings when NYC comes alive and we can bid adieu to the lazy dog days of summer. Fashion week brings life back to our beloved emptied out city as the fashion cognoscenti and glitterati rock the latest fall collections and we are introduced to the beautiful new collections of spring 2018. A flurry of activities creates excitement in NYC such as the US Open finals, the opening of the NY Film festival, and the fall charity circuit kicks into full swing- all of which celebrate living in the greatest city in the world.
As fall is one of the best times to travel our theme this month was escapes- from weekend getaways to exotic locales. The unspoiled and timeless beauty of the Galapagos Islands served as a backdrop to this month’s cover story with Mariana Downing. Sailing aboard the luxurious and eco-friendly Galapagos Legend we ventured to the far Eastern region of the Galapagos archipelago this month for our cover shoot. We found dramatic landscapes with red sand beaches, jagged black lava walls and cliffs that were home to indigenous species of marine and bird life not found anywhere else in the world. This was a true testament to the power of nature and the evolution of life. Giant tortoises as well as sea lions and marine iguanas all happily posed in our shoot as we visited their home. As Havana was a source of inspiration for many runway collections this year, we ventured to the colorful streets of Havana for our fashion shoot. As if time stood still, the Baroque and neoclassical architecture along with the vibrant colors of colonial style homes and vintage autos made you feel like Hemingway is in the corner bar penning his next greatest tome. From Bali to Los Cabos, we traveled to some of the most luxurious destinations around the world highlighting the best in culinary options to cultural excursions. Enjoy the beautiful Indian summer weather of September when the days are warm with crisp blue skies and the leaves begin to turn to beautiful shades of gold and red signifying the bounty of autumn RESIDENT MAGAZINE

Italy Just Down the Road
CONTRIBUTORS My name is Eduardo Aguirre and I am a photographer living in the beautiful city of Miami. I came to the United States from Peru over 30 years ago. I started photography a few short years ago as a hobby as most photographers do, taking pictures of landscapes, nature, sunrises, sunsets, etc. After doing this for about a year, my enthusiasm quickly evolved and manifested into shooting portraits, fashion and swimwear. I find myself working endless hours perfecting my craft. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that I would be experiencing all of the wonderful opportunities to collaborate with highly talented individuals. I am so grateful to so many for helping me achieve my success. If you love what you do and you’re passionate about it, never give up.

BEHIND THE VELVET ROPE SEPTEMBER 2017
By Joe Alexander with Photographs by Patrick McMullan
THE TWO TOP PLAYS Young people of all ages are flocking to two important plays on Broadway. You should see them both before the new season debuts on the Great White Way.
DEAR EVAN HANSEN The Tony Awards handed out 9 nominations and 6 Tony’s to Dear Evan Hansen including Best Musical and Best Actor in a musical for Ben Platt for his moving performance as high school senior struggling with social anxiety. This uplifting show also addresses the use of social media by millenials. Platt, who is best known for his movie Pitch Perfect said, “I have always had to struggle with anxiety, and as a proud Jew, that’s not a surprising thing”.

Alec and Hilaria Baldwin @ Authors Night
GEORGE ORWELL’S 1984 This avant-garde staging of George Orwell’s book, 1984 is both a shocking and scary look at what a totalitarian future would look like. Reed Birney, who won a Tony for Best Actor in a Play, gives a breakthrough and graphic performance in this powerful show. Reed said, “Other adaptations have reduced the book to its plot, what I think is remarkable about our show is how it disorientates you. This production is attempting to capture what the book does to the reader.” Birney’s costar model-actress Olivia Wilde stunned the audience with a riveting and nuanced performance. “If you fall off a horse, you get back up. I am not a quitter” adding, “even if I’m left high and dry at the end of this wild journey, Just taking it is a great feeling.” Bravo to them both!

ISABELLE BSCHER Art World It Girl By Joe Alexander
Woman-owned art world powerhouse
I
sabelle Bscher, an art historian with a master’s degree from Sotheby’s, is the third generation to run Galerie Gmurzynska, taking over from her mother and her grandmother, who founded it in 1965. The family built it into an art world powerhouse, representing the likes of Picasso, Donald Judd, Robert Indiana and James Turrell, as well as architects Zaha Hadid and Richard Meier, actor Sylvester Stallone, and designer Karl Lagerfeld. Isabelle recently had a booth at TEFAF in NYC and shows regularly at Art Basel. She will take her gallery there from December 7th to 10th. Bscher is planning something special for Art Basel Miami, but it’s too early to reveal specifics. “We always try to surprise people, to do something different, something interesting.”
Christo Christo will join Isabelle when she brings his work to her gallery’s booth during Art Expo Chicago in September. Christo famously wrapped Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art in 1969. “It’s a city that from very early on in his career has been very important to him,” said Bscher who will display three of Christo’s works from that period, and host a dinner in his honor at Untitled Supper Club. “I’m told they make the best cocktails,” she says. expochicago.com
Miró The Swiss gallery will also show rare pieces by Joan Miró and Fernand Léger. This is a stellar roster by any measure, but these blue chip artists were also selected because they each have a strong connection to the Windy City, explained gallery owner Isabelle Bscher. Miró had to struggle to find the funding to erect his now-iconic sculpture “Miró’s Chicago” in the Loop back in 1981. Today, the piece, affectionately called “Miss Chicago” by locals, is a major tourist attraction. “It’s very beloved by the people, and we’re bringing the maquette back here for that piece,” says Bscher, adding that her model is one of the

few in private hands, as most related Miró works are in major museums.
Léger A 1931 Léger piece that Bscher will show at the art fair is significant because that year marked the artist’s first-ever trip to America, including a visit to Chicago. “People in Chicago, collectors, and the museums were very visionary from very early on supporting artists,” says Bscher. “Both these artists have very close ties to the city.”
A sensory experience Antonio Monfreda, who has created major exhibitions for Valentino and Fendi, and
was creative consultant for the Metropolitan Museum’s AngloMania exhibit, designed Galerie Gmurzynska’s Chicago booth. “He thinks looking at art is something very intimate, so he wanted to create something that involves all senses,” says Bscher. He created curtains using special fabrics, with custom scents from Santa Maria Novella for a fully sensory experience with the master works.
Future exhibitions Upcoming at the gallery’s four locations in Switzerland are major exhibits on Alexander Rodchenko and Roberto Matta, and one on photographer Wayne Maser. gmurzynska.com

MARK FLEISCHMAN Inside Studio 54 By Bennett Marcus
C
an Studio 54 Be Born Again? blared a NY Magazine cover in 1981, chronicling the reopening festivities of the legendary nightclub that had been shuttered when its owners were convicted of tax evasion. Mark Fleischman, an entrepreneur who bought the place from founders Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell, and has written a book about the experience titled “ Inside Studio 54 “ thought so. “It was the pinnacle of everything happening in NYC at that time and I was drawn to owning it like a moth to the flame,” Said Mark. On opening night a glittering crowd of thousands waited for hours, in the rain, while the doorman, with all the power, “glowed.” The street was closed due to the clog of limos, while celebs like Jacqueline Bisset, Bjorn Borg and Cheryl Tiegs slipped in the back door.
Mick Jagger & Michael Jackson Fleischman was right, the place roared back to life, and he was in the middle of all of the cocaine sniffing, Champagne swilling debauchery. And he recounts all the juicy details in his book, “Inside

Studio 54,” out September 19. In the book you’ll find Mick Jagger befriending young women, Michael Jackson taking refuge from the crowd in the DJ booth, Rick James entertaining in the ladies room and David Bowie hanging in Fleischman’s office.
Liza Minnelli & Robin Williams It took two years of legal assessing before Fleischman received the “go ahead” to publish his book. Fleischman admits he had to pull a few stories, but he still names plenty of names and offers some interesting blind items for the readers. You’ll find a story about the wild party he threw to reopen the club in 1981. But what he couldn’t include was the part about an Oscar winner locking himself in the bathroom with Champagne and cocaine at the after party Fleischman had at his penthouse. He also had to edit out several stories involving Liza Minnelli and details about the hard partying he did with John Belushi and Robin Williams.
Alec Baldwin: An Excerpt “The legendary Rubber Room was the dark balcony at the top of Studio 54. It was covered with black rubber trim and flooring that could be easily washed down. Every night after all the lunacy, the busboys would find discarded rubbers, poppers, and panties —a testimony to the night’s fun and games. Alec Baldwin, who had worked there as a busboy when he was a struggling actor, said he finally had to quit because seeing the sexual interplay night after night left him ’ perpetually horny.’ “
Rancho La Puerta Health Spa There are risks involved in running the world’s biggest party, and Fleischman, who now lives in L.A. and runs the Bar Method workout studio, became overly fond of drugs, alcohol and wild sex, and checked into the Betty Ford Clinic in 1985. Betty Ford didn’t work for Mark but he regained his sobriety 30 years ago at the Rancho La Puerta health resort in Tecate, Mexico. indiebound.org/book/9781945572579

ROBERT CENEDELLA Satirical Political Art By Bennett Marcus
R
obert Cenedella was the subject of the award-winning 2016 documentary, “Art Bastard.” His newest painting, titled “Pence on Earth,” features a towering President Donald Trump, wearing a crown, with his arm in a cast, holding his own head. Below, is a miniscule Mike Pence with a priestly white, large cross around his neck. They are perched atop a dark, scorched Earth. Why is Trump holding his own head? “Because I feel eventually he’ll take himself down,” Cenedella says. “I feel that’s where it’s headed, that Pence will be the president, with his values taking us back to the fifth century.” Cenedella is considered a political artist. Last year, his painting, “Fin del Mundo,” depicting Trump as a devil crushing the Pope while surrounded by politicians like Ted Cruz, made headlines around the world.
Youthful activism His activism is lifelong, starting in the 1950s. Cenedella got expelled from New York’s High School for Music and Art for writing an article that infuriated the administration and refusing to sign a loyalty oath stating he had never been a member of the Communist Party. “My father was blacklisted, and we went into poverty as a result, so a lot of my political interests come from having lived it.” In 1965, he staged a show, “Yes Art,” a satirical spoof of Pop Art that included a live sculpture in which he threw freshly boiled spaghetti onto a canvas. “I said when I did this show that I would get more publicity than any other artist, including Warhol, and I did,” says Cenedella. “It was probably the most widely written about show I ever had.” The show even garnered international media attention. “So when they say I’m the most widely written about, unknown, American artist, unfortunately it’s still true,” he laughs.
32 | resident.com 34 | resident.com
Art Students League His outspoken political art has even influenced New York’s prestigious Art Students’ League, where Cenedella has taught life drawing and painting for many years, and will offer a class in satirical political art this fall. He chalks it up to today’s fraught political environment. “They had never done anything like this, a lot of people talked about “Fin del Mundo” because it got a lot of attention.” The class will start in September, and a lot of people have signed up. “I don’t think you can really teach satire, but if someone’s interested in satire I can help them define it.”
Donald Trump bumped from Le Cirque mural One of Cenedella’s most well known works is a mural of 181 very famous people dining at the swank restaurant, Le Cirque. Think Jackie O, Paul Newman, Sophia Loren, and Barbara Walters. He did the piece in 2000, and restaurateur, Sirio Maccioni, did mention the people he wanted
included in the painting. “To my credit, I must say the only person that I didn’t want to put in the painting was Donald Trump,” Cenedella says. “So I put in his first wife Ivana instead. I think other than that, I would put in anyone. I even put in Nixon and Kissinger, who I didn’t think much of. “
Rustic Maine summers Since 1980, the artist and his wife Liz have spent their summers on a rustic island in Maine. There is no electricity, no cars, they have to fetch water for cooking from a pristine spring, and use hand tools to prepare food and do chores. “The island for me is a place where the world makes sense,” says Cenedella. “It’s a place where you literally are in another world. I sometimes like to think that we’ve seceded from mainland America, and that we are on this giant ship.” rcenedellagallery.com

HEALTY TEETH, HAPPY TEETH Ask the expert, Dr. Sol By Tammy Mark
R
unning a bustling practice in the heart of New York City Dr. Sol Schwartzstein meets new faces on a daily basis. As a dentist specializing in cosmetics, implants and periodontics, and the founder of Central Park South Dental Arts, he aims to make sure everyone leaves with a bright and healthy smile. We caught him between patients to answer some questions about oral health, NYC and the real deal on flossing.
What do you love about dentistry and why did you choose this specialty? Dentistry is very satisfying, and this specialty is especially satisfying. Not only am I able to help people stay healthy, but, as with any type of cosmetic surgery, people are coming and asking you to change their lives. You can truly transform people’s lives from day one to day two - and they love you for it.
What’s important to know about periodontal health? If you don’t take good care of your gums, your teeth will be weak and compromised, but it’s much more vital than that - periodontal disease is also linked to other health issues such as heart disease.
What are your best tips for oral hygiene – and what’s the real deal with flossing? The real deal on flossing -it is important but not the only thing. It’s more important to brush, use a rinse and floss and see the dentist regularly then to get obsessive about flossing.
So we should visit you every six months? The six month recommendation is for maintenance for those without any issues. As soon as you start developing problems, you need to be on a customized recall schedule tailored just for you – typically every four months.
What is the newest technology in dental care and what techniques are you are excited about? There’s a lot of digital dentistry that we’re doing with fabrication of teeth. It’s all done via com-

puter and more precise, with a smaller margin of error to help ensure an even better fit for our patients. I’m always excited about what we can do with dental implants. We are able to basically give you a “third set” of teeth. Of course, if we could help you avoid that, you avoid that.
Favorite or most satisfying procedures that leave you and your patient with a smile? Bleaching - patients love that - and veneers. Full smile makeovers with implants -when it’s all done they have a brand new set of teeth, and that’s very satisfying for all.
What’s the biggest challenge and the best part of running a practice in the heart of New York City? There are thousands of dentists in NYC, so we work extra hard to stand out. As a patient, you have to find the one that connects with your per-
sonality, listens to what you have to say and can address your particular needs. The best part is meeting the diverse people that visit the practice. I’ve made friends with of my many longtime patients and get to help people from all walks of life
How do you keep fashionable while wearing scrubs all day? Kind of like Superman in reverse – I rip my scrubs off and have my suit underneath - then I fly out at the end of the day and head back onto the streets of NYC. Dr. Sol is the founder of CPS Dental Arts 30 Central Park S, #12b, New York, NY 10019. (212) 558 - 9072 centralparksouthdentist.com instagram.com/drsoldds

SUMMER CROSLEY Passion for Fashion By tash bazika
F
inding a job right after college is the main focus of any senior student getting ready to step out into the real world. For some it’s easy, for others not so much, but when it happens and you finally realize you are where you need to be, it is refreshing. For a girl with a passion for fashion at a very young age, becoming a model and working in the fashion industry is the ultimate dream come true for Summer Crosley. Immediately after graduating college, Summer moved to Miami, FL—a very fashion conscious city— and little did she know modelling would be there to extend an arm and pull her into the world of fashion. For her first photo shoot, Summer was a nervous wreck and didn’t realize how intimidating a camera could be, especially when all eyes were on her. This nervous streak stayed with her for the first six months of her modelling career. After that, Summer welcomed the camera and became comfortable with being the point of attraction as her confidence grew. Encouraged by her model agency to make the move to Los Angeles, Summer landed her first role on the series Nip Tuck and most notably her role in Californication. With Cindy Crawford as her role model as a child it is only fitting that Summer would aspire to pursue a career in acting. Nevertheless her modelling ambitions were still alive and well. Summer has been featured in over 100 magazines worldwide—adding international model to her repertoire. From her travels, Summer was exposed to the devastating and sparse water conditions of other countries, especially with her trip to Bali, Indonesia, where she was inspired to get involved in non-profit organization Ocean Life Conservation. Summer quickly realized the reason behind the awful water conditions was the lack of knowledge on how to protect the ocean via keeping trash

and oils out of the oceans, which kills the fish and leaves the water quality to be poor. As a determined and passionate advocate, Summer is helping educate people and spreading the message to keep our oceans clean and protected. At the moment, Summer is working with
Haiti Relief a new charity helping Haitians to recover from the devastating hurricanes, which rip apart communities and kill thousands. Model, actress and activist—there is more than meets the eye with the beautiful and caring Summer Crosley.

EGO SOLEIL
Behind the Scenes with Lou Larochelle & LIVING AT SILVER TOWERS By Kenza Salahdine Transcribed by Tash Bazika
C
ombining her business acumen with her passion for everything fashionable, Resident Magazine speaks with Silver Tower’s Resident Lou Larochelle on what she loves about her neighborhood and her burgeoning women’s contemporary fashion line.
Q. What do you like about living in Hell’s kitchen? A. I’m a foodie, and there are so many great local restaurants in Hell’s Kitchen just in the immediate vicinity of Silver Towers. I love this neighborhood because there are so many great places to discover within walking distance. Although this location is very quiet at night, you can find the life of the city within a few blocks.
Q. How does Hell’s Kitchen inspire you with your collection? A. I’m a partner at Ego Soleil which is a high end contemporary women’s fashion line and our showroom is based in Chelsea.
Q. Why do you love living in Silver Towers? I love its location. Silver Towers is by the river so it’s quiet at night. The breeze is fresh, and it is convenient for a walk by the river after dinner or even take a casual cruise. The serenity at night gives me an escape from the urban jungle, yet it is located in the heart of Manhattan and everything is accessible. Great restaurants, Broadway shows, shopping at Fifth Avenue, night clubs, Central Park, Times Square and more are within reach. I also love the Silver Towers rooftop as well as their amenities, especially the pool and sauna, that I use on a daily basis.
Q. Tell us about your background- were you always in fashion? A. I have a bachelor’s degree in Finance and I have graduate degree in Management and

Finance, so I have a strong business and finance background. As a partner, I help with the business and strategy side of the brand from managing our budget to business development and sales. I started in the company after I graduated, because I always wanted to be an entrepreneur and this terrific opportunity came up.
Q. How did you get into fashion? A. Since I was little I have always been passionate about fashion. I have always loved it. When I had the opportunity to actually combine the business side with the fashion side, I just thought it was a good opportunity to do something I love with my educational background.
Q. Why did you choose New York City? A. New York City is definitely one of the city’s I always dreamt of living in when I was young. I’m originally from Quebec and New York was just somewhere I wanted to go. When I had the opportunity to move to New York, of course I did not say no. I had this opportunity to combine fashion with business in a city that excels in both areas and the timing was perfect.
Q. How do you connect with your designers? You have two designers, one from New York and one from London. A. The reason behind having one designer in Europe and one in New York is really because when we try to be trendy in America, we know what is popular and when in Europe we know what is trendy over there. It makes our brand very different and our style combines what is fashionable in Europe and New York. It is mainly to keep updated with the fashion culture.
doing retail, but we try to wholesale to department stores and boutique stores. Our main geographical target is obviously the United States, and also Canada, Mexico and Asia. We collaborate with a company in Asia who represents us in that market. We are also selling on our website as well.
Q. Where are your clothes made? A. As of now they are made in New York City and we might shift our production overseas, but as of now everything is done in New York.
Q. What is meaning behind the name of your brand? A. Ego Soleil is two French words. Ego meaning myself, I, and everything about me. Soleil is the sun in French. I think it represents every New Yorker in this name and we’re based in New York and it’s one of the reasons for our name. Soleil in New York represents looking on the bright side, life is beautiful, and the positive side of the city. While ego would represent the other side, where everybody is busy, everybody is a little selfish, so as a fashion name, it works. Fashion is two parts, it’s trendy but also it is about expressing yourself, and you can really express who you are with what you’re wearing.
Q. How do you get inspired to create each piece?
Q. Where are you sold?
A. That’s a question for a designer. I do not design the collection. I think what I know about my designer is she is from New York City and she has her own personal inspiration, as do the other designers. She works with our designer in Europe to integrate some of the trend and culture in Europe. So, I think that’s how she creates each piece. Each designer has a very different inspiration and each designer is different.
A. Right now we have different sales channels, for instance we are in a few physical stores, so we are

It’s truly a magical place where time has stood still and we can observe the wonders and consummate power of nature first hand. The pristine terrestrial and marine ecosystems lie within captivating landscapes that provide a sanctuary for prehistoric land and sea creatures that comprise a living affirmation of evolution. The archipelago is comprised of numerous islands that each possess their own unique landscapes and vistas determined by the power of nature. Whether it’s a white, black or red sand beach, marked by dramatic coves or stunning geological formations, or an arid cliff, each island is different with unique and endemic inhabitants. The best way to explore the Galapagos Islands is on a cruise with Go Galapagos. The largest boutique expedition ship is the M/V Legend that can accommodate up to 100 guests. With three different decks they offer different areas for socializing or admiring the majestic vistas whether it’s soaking up rays by the pool or Jacuzzi or enjoying the comfortable lounge areas indoors. There are 52 outside cabins and 3 interior cabins with a variety of configurations to accommodate families or couples. The spacious balcony suites range from 237-290 square feet with a sitting area, panoramic
bay windows and a private balcony to soak in the balmy sea air. While the majority of the rooms are Junior suites which can convert to a triple and range from 161 square feet to 215 square feet offering panoramic windows to enjoy the magnificent views and can be interconnected for larger families. There are four different three to four day itineraries to choose from that be combined up to 14 days to get a comprehensive overview of the islands. The trips are divided into regions- North, West, South and East, and each day guests are treated to two different island adventures led by expert naturalist guides. In between land visits, guests can explore the fascinating marine life with two snorkeling tours per day as well. After a full day of exploring the region take the
time to enjoy the delicious international and Ecuadorian cuisine prepared daily. One of the highlights of the trip is the alfresco BBQ under the stars that is truly magical. For this shoot we explored the dramatic western region where each island provided a visually stunning backdrop. Black lava provides the smooth and unbroken surfaces with sculptural formations that form the basaltic landscape against the deep blue ocean on Santiago Island. While Puerto Egas forms deep pools and caves with emerald green waters populated with playful sea lions. Rabida is known as the red island with a rust colored sand beach bordered by rugged cliffs and small craters which were created by the oxidation from its initial formation. Home to colonies of sea lions and pelicans as well as flamingos who come to bask in the shallow salt lagoon. Isabela Island is the not only the largest island in the archipelago but one of the most beautiful. Its stunning landscape was formed by 6 active volcanoes and offers stunning cliffside views of the volcanic crater and valley below. The youngest island, Fernandina is perceived as a land without time where land iguanas were thought to have evolved into marine iguanas and flightless cormorants lost their ability to fly because it wasn’t need in this environment, thus giving a first hand glimpse to the power of evolution. The best way to get to the Galapagos Islands from the U.S. is via JetBlue Airways which offers daily direct flights from Fort Lauderdale Hollywood Airport to Quito Airport. JetBlue will serve the FLL-UIO route with a 150-seat Airbus A320. JetBlue Flight 2851 will leave Fort Lauderdale daily at 7 p.m. and arrive in Quito at 10:34 p.m., all times local. Flight 2850 from Quito to Fort Lauderdale will leave at 11:59 p.m. and arrive at FLL at 5:17 a.m. “The fact that JetBlue has decided to fly here after they’re already flying into Colombia and Lima, Peru, is a huge win for us and a major vote of confidence,” said Andrew O’Brian, CEO of Corporación Quiport, the airport’s operating consortium. “Not just for the country of Ecuador and the city of Quito, but for the airport itself. Because when JetBlue steps in and starts to fly, everybody takes notice.” From Quito you can catch a regional carrier to either Baltra or San Cristobal to reach the Go Galapagos cruise ship. At Home with
CARMEN MARC VALVO & CHRISTIAN KNAUST
By Deborah Gordon

here’s nothing better than a good love story like that shared by legendary designer Carmen Marc Valvo and brand President Christian Knaust, who first met when both were students at Parson’s. Now married, the couple celebrated their 25th anniversary together back in 2014 with a swanky soiree in the Hamptons. Helming an extremely successful fashion empire, Chris and Carmen spend most days working diligently together on the next creation. But, nights and down-time are mostly spent at one of their four fab abodes: A 200 year old villa near the Bosnian sea in Sweden,

bequeathed by Christian’s family, a 40-acre residence in Costa Rica, an apartment at the iconic Majestic on Central Park West -converted from two apartments, the dwelling encompasses an entire floor, and is a sculpture filled oasis with stunning views. The oceanfront Bridgehampton estate which also abuts the Mecox bay has been owned by the couple since 1988, and is a haven where the early risers love to kayak, swim and play in their garden. Carmen’s collections have become some of the most sought after among fashionistas of all shapes and sizes, and his designs have graced the frame of numerous celebs including Beyonce. But, Mr. Marc Valvo has his eye on adding actress Kate Blanchett to that list. The home recently served as the setting of a video shoot in preparation for the Carmen Marc Valvo New York Fashion Week runway show, which is always a coveted ticket. The beauty of the landscape provided inspiration for the line, which Carmen described as “kind of like barefoot on the beach, it’s very laid back and carefree- a sophisticated, dressed down elegance”. Prime examples of the adage “to whom much is given…”, Chris and Carmen espouse the tenet of giving back. Having survived colon cancer, Carmen is particularly committed to increasing awareness about the issue, but supports many philanthropic causes.
in love with when we first saw the house. Every part of this house has a very unique quality. We love it. Because we are so close to the water, we couldn’t change the footprints, we were allowed to extend the kitchen, ever so slightly. It still has the same bones and ceiling as an old salt box, but with a few gables added and a few columns, a larger porch. It’s like a tiny jewel box - that’s what we call it - the greenhouse, the shade garden, the deck, the pool, the bay - it’s very, very magical.
Chris and Carmen regularly entertain at the home, hosting some charity events, but mostly family and close friends. As in all of the couple’s residences, the Bridgehampton home’s central hub is the kitchen, where guests are warmly welcomed and experience the culinary creations of the self described “chef and sous chef”. C&C: The chef’s kitchen is amazing, it’s very easy to cook in there, and it’s very well planned. We had the kitchen re-done and we ended up with 2 of everything basically, 2 freezers, 2 dishwashers, 2 sinks, 3 refrigerators, 4 ovens and 6 burners on a Viking stove, and a grill that you can basically put a whole pig in, if you wanted to. It’s huge. We have 25 family members for 5 days for 4th of July every year, and we have to be able to cook and make sure we have enough space for everything.
CMV: The fashion industry to start off with, has always been very involved with women’s health issues, especially breast cancer, because it’s something that touches our customers so nearly and dearly, and it’s something that we see, and so as a fashion designer, doing exclusive collections to raise money for breast cancer research has always been important to me – my dad was
doctor, my mom was a nurse. “I was supposed to be a plastic surgeon…but that kind of needle and thread work was not in my DNA,” joked Carmen. (Ironically, Chris also initially planned to become a doctor.) I came out of the “cancer closet” through the help of Katie Couric. That was really hard for me, because I wasn’t expecting to share the story, but it was probably one of the most uplifting things I’ve ever done. It’s not breast cancer, it’s not colon cancer, it’s health in general. If we do research or funding for one, we may ultimately find the cure for another. Anything we can do to raise funds and awareness is beneficial to all humanity, and so it has really become one of my life’s goals. Education and conversation will ultimately allow us to win the battle. Travel aficionados, Chris Knaust and Carmen Marc Valvo have journeyed the world – Africa, Bora Bora, the Maldives – but always prefer to shelter at home, whether it be in Central America, Europe or New York. Their beautiful Bridgehampton home is a testament to their mutual love, respect and admiration for quality, craftsmanship, exquisite design, and above all, each other.

he new 7-series from BMW continues to dexterously navigate the fine line between sport and full-sized luxury. It is the astonishing ability to appropriately maneuver with the agility of a sports car without sacrificing comfort that remains a a hallmark of this series.
What do the experts have to say? Robert Schiano a Senior Client Advisor with BMW for over 30 years explains that, “The 7-series is the most innovative vehicle in its class, offering an unparalleled experience for both drivers and passengers through technology, comfort, and engineering that sets the standard for the future of elite travel while charging into an unimaginable realm of performance.”
Choosing the right 7-series for you: 2018 offers a host of options, including the 740i and 750i, a plug-in hybrid (740e), or two high-end, high-performance versions (Alpina B7 and M760i) with each offering unique engine and horsepower ratings, and either standard or all-wheel drive. Users can download the app or visit the YachtLife website and browse through hundreds of impressive yachts and with clear pricing and a secure cashless checkout, chartering a private yacht is as easy as booking a hotel. The platform offers clients an easy to navigate site, with clear and concise information on all the hand picked yachts ranging from 30 feet to 165 feet in size. Co-founder Patrick Curley assures the yachts selected are inspected to secure certain requirements and meets the up to date standards of the Yachts size and capacity. “With yachts that are 60 to 90 feet, we want them to come with a fly bridge, at least one Jet Ski. For boats over 90 feet, we generally want them to have a Jacuzzi and at least 2 Jet Skis and around 4 crewmembers. With each boat we select, we have a checklist, just like a hotel would e.g. towels and sheets”
YachtLife currently lists around 250 yachts on its platform, from a 40-foot VanDutch to a 154-foot Feadship with a crew of 12. To further personalize your adventure guests can pre-order catering packages, which are ready to go before you take your first step on your private luxurious vessel. This takes the hassle out of bringing bulky coolers onto the yacht, with sub-par sandwiches, which would be flawed by the time you get to the mariner. Instead, you could be relishing in a plate of fresh seasonal fruits, gourmet cheeses, accompanied with crackers and a bottle of chardonnay, and gourmet lunches and exquisite dinners under the moonlight. Today, YachtLife operates in South Florida, the Bahamas, the Hamptons, Chicago, New England, Spain, the South of France, Italy, Greece and Turkey. Be the envy of the sea with your own private yacht while savouring the salty atmosphere and soaking up the warm rays.

DINING OUT A By Tash Bazika
GAIJIN gaijinny.com Astoria is notorious for amazing food and has become a foodie’s mecca perfect for their next feast. Gaijin, which is Japanese for foreigner, is Astoria’s latest culinary gem on 31st Avenue that is awash in a palette of zen like neutrals. Launched by Chicago native co-owner and executive Chef Mark, he felt that food is a universal language that transcends the spoken word and chose the name which described himself- a foreigner that shared a passion for the art of Japanese cuisine. His artistic eye and creative skills are influenced by his trainer Chef Kaze, a veteran Chicago sushi chef with a 30-year history of opening innovative and wildly successful sushi restaurants- Macku Sushi and Mirai Sushi. His talent and mastery of Japanese cuisine is best experienced through the daily changing 6 or 13 course Omakase menu served at the sushi bar where you can observe and taste Chef Mark’s culinary skills while learning about his handpicked selection of hard to find seasonal fish. Offering some of the most unique and flavorful Japanese dishes in the city, this gem conveys the true art of Japanese Omakase. Other selections on the menu include Temaki, Sushi and Sashimi, Robata, Hot Plate and Cold Plate. NOT JUST SUSHI BEYOND SUSHI’S Vegan Cuisine By Corinne O’Connor
B
eyond Sushi is about to be your new go-to spot to grab some good eats especially with locations all around New York City. The all vegan menu at Beyond Sushi is unlike any other providing a fusion of both Asian and Mediterranean cuisine. Chef Guy Vaknin is an extremely talented chef who was actually featured on season 10 of Hell’s Kitchen after studying at the Institute of Culinary Education in Manhattan. In fact a lot of Vaknin’s work ethic stems from his time spent in the Israeli Defense Force before moving to New York in 2005. The other part of Beyond Sushi’s beautiful creation comes from his wife Tali Vaknin. The two met during their time working for Vaknin’s father at his Kosher catering company. Tali has been a huge help in making sure the business runs smoothly. Not only have they had five restaurants open thus far, but plan to open two in the coming year and hope to eventually add locations on the West Coast. Talk about a power couple! The menu is inspired by both their backgrounds. Chef Vaknin developed a lot of inspiration and influence by cooking for his mom and sister as he grew up. As well as being Israeli with Moroccan parents there was so much room for many flavors to arise. Tali Vaknin grew up as a vegetarian and hence took a unique twist on the sushi roll. The two have formed a healthy, delicious and unique menu to satisfy any palate. Serving items such as sushi, noodles, soups, salads and more there’s something for people of any age. A couple of Tali’s favorites are the badge dumplings. These dumplings are filled with charred cabbage, onion, bell peppers, carrots and sesame oil topped with chili panko and cilantro with a ponzu sauce. Another favorite is the nutty buddy rice paper wrap. This wrap is filled with baby greens, soba noodles, jalapeno peanut butter, carrots, cashews, avocado, baked tofu and cilantro with a ponzu sauce. Are you salivating yet? As well as delicious food they also have witty menu names such as the Pickle Me sushi roll. This is made of six-grain rice, pickled burdock root, carrot pickled daikon, and avocado with a carrot ginger dressing. Every menu option is filed with so many nutritious ingredients as well as flavors you can’t go wrong with anything. Beyondsushinyc.com

ust a stone’s throw away from the water is the beautifully decorated Point Royal restaurant, run by head chef and leading culinary figure, Geoffrey Zakarian. Situated in the Diplomat Hotel, which recently underwent a $100 million renovation, this serene oasis is the perfect balance of tropical and tranquillity. The array of palms and other green foliage strategically placed around the room offer a pleasing sight to the dining experience. Guests will feel as though they’re dining in the jungle with the color palette consisting of ocean blues and light earthy browns, piercing through the dark green. The large lounge seats are an ingenious way to mimic the galley of a boat and to offer a great deal of seating. The geometric light fixtures that boldly dangle from the ceiling are immediate eye catchers from the moment you step in. They contrast well with the colours of the establishment, along with the theme of ocean serenity and luxury. As for the menu, Zakarian lives up to his reputation and serves the best of the best of American Coastal cuisine. Covering everything from breakfast omelettes to dinner and a raw bar, Point Royal has everyone covered this summer. A dish, which is certainly not to be missed, is the butter-poached lobster roll that simply melts in your mouth. A whole main lobster is steamed and served intact to look like a lobster outside of its shell. A massive potato bun, soaked in glorious butter and toasted to a golden brown becomes the new home for the lobster. To top it all off the lobster swims in Zakarian’s signature Coleman’s mustard-spiked butter sauce. The beverage menu offers everything from fun filled Tiki Cocktails Piñata Coladas to elegant and tasteful wines from Italy, France and beyond.

BAGATELLE Reliving Summer in the South of France Year Round By Hillary Latos
T
hough summer may be over you can still experience the essence of a summer spent in the south of France at any Bagatelle throughout the world whether it’s in New York City, Miami, St. Barths or Punta del Este. Here Resident Magazine speaks to Remi Laba, the founder and co owner of Bagatelle about how he has captured that glamorous and carefree Mediterranean lifestyle and brought it around the world.
How do you translate the essence of the joie de vivre of the French Riviera to Bagatelle establishments worldwide? We carry our brand values from venue to venue. It’s a sentiment that comes from the happiness one feels when they share a special moment with new friends, old friends and family. Typically those moments are found around a table, sharing a meal. Values with food, wine and champagne create a merry atmosphere that helps people rejoice and come together.
How do you curate your music, cuisine, and vibe to get the right mix and right crowd?
The DJ is here to cater to the atmosphere in the restaurant and respond to the client’s energy. He’s there to cater to the older, younger, more energetic or mellow crowd. Our DJ’s adapt and customize their sets to the appropriate energy of the crowd improving their mood, bringing the energy up when needed while appealing to memories and happy times. We want to drive people’s energy by coming alive and dancing. In terms of the cuisine, we always make sure we are a restaurant first. Our chefs are highly trained and the dishes embody the Mediterranean vibe coming from the sea. Our cuisine includes healthy and fun meals meant to be shared that appeal to both women and men. We try to have a good balance of signature dishes as well as dishes that adapt to each culture and city.
What are your favorite summer destinations? My favorite summer destination is the Mediterranean because it embodies everything that summer means to me; beautiful blue seas
and great meals with friends for hours. It’s a mix of family, friends, and cultures. It’s a perfect summer destination. Additionally, I like to escape to the Alps to the soothing landscape as well.
You are in all of the hotspots in the Mediterranean- Ibiza, St. Tropez and Monaco- can you tell me a bit about how each one differs and how you chose the locations? hey’re all different in essence because St. Tropez is a summer town. Coming there for us is like coming home. Each restaurant is modeled after the St. Tropez location. Monaco is more of a glamorous location that is year round and more of a traditional restaurant rather than a beach club. We chose the location based on the most luxurious destination in Monaco, Casino Square. In Ibiza, we wanted something a little more rustic with a natural vibe in Cala Moli. The restaurant is facing the sunset and is very special nature driven destination. bistrotbagatelle.com

Surrounded by the sparkling azure waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Grand Cayman serves as the perfect location for sophisticated seafood restaurant, Blue by Eric Ripert, situated inside the Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman hotel. Formerly a chef at the iconic Le Bernardin in New York, Eric Ripert swapped the hustle and bustle of a busy city, for ocean views, calming waters and pineapple cup cocktails, topped with those cute little umbrellas that sit on the side. Indisputably, Grand Caymans distinguished restaurant Blue by Eric Ripert is where the wanderlust travellers and local Caymanians go to be dazed by the true epicurean artistry in the grand tradition of Le Bernardin. Guests are

treated to a Las Vegas Style dining experience with Michelin-quality food being the showstopper of this performance. To set the scene we start off with a soothing ambience, which guides you to a soft landing at your table. While you are being guided, the elegant décor jumps out and introduces itself. The varnished wooden ceilings are polished and sleek and pair well with the ocean blue marble floor, which takes you back a couple of hours to when you were swimming in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. The chairs and stools are covered in a soft creamy color, which is subtle yet keeps with the elegance of the space. If that was not enough, the lounge area reminds us of something you would see being popular in the Jazz Age, as the bar stools are a lush red color, releasing seductive vibes and luxury qualities. The chandelier hanging in the center, further adds to the opulence, of the extravagant space. We can already see Gatsby savouring a glass of scotch on the rocks with the infamous Myer Wolfsheim, planning his next get rich quick scheme.
For the main event, diners can choose a six or seven prixe fix menu, or the famous tasting menu, which offers an array of seafood’s, all prepared and cooked variously. To start off, the Tuna –Foie Grass is Chef Ripert’s delectable baby, which he brought with him from his former restaurant. It is a melt in your mouth dish consisting of thinly pounded local Tuna, foie gras, an incredibly thin piece of toasted baguette topped with oil and chives. From the almost raw section, the caviar is a crowd pleaser, and is the perfect companion to accompany other dishes. The lightly cooked section offers a selection of seafood’s, which have been lightly cooked and served with vegetables, sauces and other condiments. All dishes are presented with exceptional style and quality, encompassing all the aspects of the restaurant as a whole. The wine list is no different, offering over 700 fine wines from around the world; this restaurant comes as no surprise as it is hailed the Caribbean’s only AAA five diamond dining experience. ritzcarlton.com/en/hotels/caribbean/ grand-cayman/dining/blue

Fighting Hunger One Sip at a Time
SIMPLE VODKA By Tash Bazika
them deliver a superior quality product. At the same time, Dave Bourne at Ignite Spirit Branding designed the Simple bottle—with the brand’s mission clearly printed on the label. “Our support of national and local charities such as feeding America, represents the bulk of our giving. Our mission to help fight hunger in America is the first and foremost focus on this product, however we are dedicated to providing a high quality product for our consumers to enjoy and love, just as much as we do,” said Daniel Lafuente.
F
or Danny Lafuente and Dan Maslow, the issue of hunger was something that was front and center for them while we were developing the idea of Simple. So many organizations and brands work to alleviate problems abroad, but we wanted to make an impact at home. We wanted to do this by providing a high-quality product where every bottle produced, not just sold, contribute to organizations like Feeding America. Thus Simple vodka was born- a high quality, farmto-bottle vodka with a business model that results in the donation of 20 meals per bottle produced; effectively one meal per drink. Through partnerships with local and national hunger relief programs, Simple Vodka is helping end the fight with hunger, one sip at a time. Danny Lafuente and Dan Maslow, often referred to as “the Dans,” met at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006 while pledging Beta Theta Pi. After graduating, the two were inspired by fellow university alumni companies, like Warby Parker and others in the social entrepreneurship space, to create a product that generated a positive social impact. The Dans knew that they wanted to create a product that

would empower consumers to become active philanthropists in the fight against hunger in America. After a night out in Miami drinking Moscow Mules, they realized the answer was right in front of them…and they were drinking it—vodka. The Dans researched dozens of organizations working on hunger relief programs across the country, specifically supply chains and how they feed those in need while also reducing food waste. They discovered that while most food is donated and pre-sorted by volunteers, the cost of storing the food and delivering it from fulfillment centers and food banks to those in need is high. These organizations need financial help and Simple is the perfect solution. On their journey to develop Simple Vodka, the Dans visited distillers across the country and were enchanted by potato vodka. Eventually, the Dans were introduced to master distiller Gray Ottley of Distilled Resources Inc., who joined the team to develop the vodka in a sustainable way in the fall of 2016. The Dans stumbled upon a partner that could help
Since launching in Florida, New York, and California in May 2017, Simple has donated more than 29,000 meals, and aims for a goal of achieving 30 million meals annually by 2020. Simple received a double gold medal from the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition in recognition of the vodka’s high-quality, premium taste, flavor and mixability. Simple Vodka provides a quality product using sustainable manufacturing practices at an affordable price to generate a positive social impact. Art of Cognac According to
CYRIL CAMUS What are the most important elements for creating cognac? In order to be called a Cognac, the spirit has to be made from grapes grown in the Cognac region, which are then double distilled in the Cognac region and then aged in French Oak casks for a minimum of two years. But for CAMUS, the process is an artisan approach where we curate the subtle nuances the grapes have to offer by hand.
People thought that it was not as efficient, not as good, and did not create as much value or wealth as a corporate model. I’ve been happy to prove those perceptions wrong and play a role in ensuring that the family business model is respected.
hand selects the eaux-de-vie with the richest and most subtle flavors. Barrels are chosen with equal care to respect the character of the original eaux-de-vie and achieve perfect balance. During a long, dormant stay in these barrels, the Cognac will take on an individual amber appearance, just as its aromatics will develop over time.
Cognac first and foremost is a brown spirit made from grapes, and because of that it is wonderfully delicate and versatile with a wide range of aromas. Younger Cognacs (VS or VSOP) tend to have fresher aromas and are delicious in cocktails. While older Cognacs (XO or Extra) are rich in flavor and offer deep aromatics. Just like wine, Cognac is all about personal preference. There is a Cognac for every palate and every occasion, and the key is just to try them.
What tasting points or elements should novices look for when either collecting or Following distillation, our Cellar Master becoming a connoisseur cognac drinker?
C
ognac has long been considered the revered nectar of royalty and CAMUS has perfected the technique of creating this luxurious elixir through generations of fine craftsmanship. Here Resident Magazine spoke to Cyril Camus, the fifth generation president at Camus, about keeping this tradition alive to a new generation of Cognac connoisseurs.
As a fifth generation president, how have you upheld and preserved the art of cognac making and what new techniques have you introduced? The CAMUS process is a celebration of the art of Cognac, and my role as current head of the house is to preserve and continue to curate that. There are certainly more efficient and costeffective ways to make Cognac, but that is not how my forefathers did it, and the end product wouldn’t be worthy of our name. Since taking the reins in 2003, I have evolved CAMUS to being about product-focused innovation and releasing expressions that others wouldn’t necessarily have, such as the Borderies XO and the Île de Ré Cognacs, launched in 2005. We didn’t invent Île de Ré, but our innovation was to put it on the market and communicate it in a way consumers could relate to.
104 | resident.com 106 | resident.com
Oak barrels with light tannins give the Cognacs an inimitable roundness, keeping all their aromatic qualities intact. For older Cognacs, such as XO Elegance or Extra Elegance, choosing damp cellars give the eaux-de-vie the wonderfully mellow character that has delighted both amateurs and the most demanding connoisseurs around the world.
What makes Camus stand out from its competitors?
What is your favorite part of the process and being part of a cognac empire?
CAMUS owes its international reputation to the richness and extreme subtlety of flavor found in its Cognacs. We have a unique style that is based on blending eaux-de-vie from different crus and of different ages. Our approach is driven by the craft of Cognac making.
One thing that is really clear when you look at our history, has been the need for every generation to go beyond what the previous one had done. We had the will to build on the past and create a larger future for the company, so I take my role as curator of the family business seriously.
In contrast to the consumer-led approach of the corporate brands, we always start with the product, and how we can create the best possible, most interesting and authentic Cognac. Then we identify the consumers who would benefit from it.
But the other thing that I’m very passionate about is going to bat for family businesses. In the early 2000s, there was a period of about 10 years when there was a loss of respect for the family business model.
I believe it’s a lot more long-term and much more linked to one’s relationship with the product and passion for it. We bring something different to the market, products that have a personality and a soul.

1 HOTEL BROOKLYN BRIDGE
ESCAPE TO THE GREENER SIDE OF LUXURY
By Tash Bazika & Jay Angel
N
estled along the East River overlooking Manhattan’s downtown district is a beautifully unique hotel filled with an atmosphere that combines modern luxury and nature to generate a colossal terrarium. With large floor to ceiling windows, open spaces and rustic wood elements accented by greenery this amazing terrarium is spacious, airy, and best of all, green. Nothing short of amenities is precious in any way. The light fixtures throughout the lobby are made of granite, which happens to be the same materials used from the same quarry that provided materials for the Brooklyn bridge, and are also embedded in the walls of the hotel. The color palette consists of earth tones, with natural colors of stone, wood and steel, used effortlessly to create the important elements like benches, stairs, walls and lounges. Pine floors were pulled out from an old Kentucky distillery and beams from a closed-down Brooklyn sugar plant. Even the rooftop pool and bar opening is fashioned from salvaged railroad ties—If the elements could speak, they would tell some remarkable stories. Completely powered by wind, the 1Hotel could be conceived as New York’s greenest hotel. Guests will sleep in bedrooms with custom hemp-blend mattresses by Keetsa, which offer the utmost comfort. In each bathroom made with Natal mahogany, glass, and marble, triple-filtered rain showers are fitted with a 5-minute hour-glass timer to remind guests to become conscious of the water being used. With a fleet of Tesla vehicles available to guests for free, the hotel not only focuses on being green on the inside, but on the outside as well. Guests will be surprised to discover their room keys, which appear to be a simple piece of circular particle board, packed with seeds capable of sprouting a bed of flowers if planted. With stunning views of the Manhattan skyline visible from select bedrooms and every inch of the rooftop bar and pool, guests can expect to submerge themselves in ultra-modern luxuries, without it costing the planet, while sipping on a cocktail and reveling in the famous New York sunsets and rooftop parties. 1hotels.com/brooklyn-bridge

ere minutes away from the port of Mykonos lies Myconican Kyma—a Myconinan Collection property located in the heart of the enchanting Grecian Island of Mykonos. The intriguing Kyma is set back from the road on a small hilltop, overlooking the iconic Alefkandra windmills, adjacent to its sister properties: the Myconian Korali and Myconia Naia. Today, this family-owned collection of hotels is run by Marios Daktylides, who continues his parents’ tradition of maintaining luxury, five-star boutiques throughout this idyllic island. The Kyma, which means “wave” in Greek, is one of the latest outposts for this hotel collection. It is elegantly decorated in true Grecian fashion with bright white lights and blue colors throughout the property. Many of the rooms are adorned with their own private pools overlooking the stunning blue water. The suites at the Kyma are elegance personified. This property offers two types of suites—some having King or Twin beds including rain showers, private pools and Jacuzzis. The Kyma particularly, out of all of the other properties in the sprawling collection, is known for being a design hotel— a point that is made clear in every elegant line, painting, or fixture strewn throughout this unique property. The food and beverage program is at the heart of what they do. The hotel forges a special connection with the type of food it serves in their three dining concepts and aims to produce the highest quality of dishes at their properties. The program

Guests dine for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Americanstyle steakhouse on property that prides itself on its fine grilled meat selection. This particular menu, along with the other restaurants on the overall property, contains items with the highest quality of ingredients that are locally sourced. Dinner selections include lighter bites like the tuna tartare with citrus yuzu and a tasty fresh green salad. Larger entrees include the crispy pork belly or the signature ribeye steak cooked on the outdoor grill on property. At the helm of the beverage program for the three properties is Irina Marouli. At the Kyma, visitors will find George’s Bar which serves guests from dusk till dawn. In the morning, the bar offers all of the coffee classics, such as traditional Greek coffee to latte macchiato and the refreshing cappuccino freddo; as well as juices and refreshments. As the day progresses, so does the menu, where cocktails become front and center. If you’re dining in the steakhouse, you might very well be welcomed with a specialty cocktail such as the Aperol spritz, among others, that Marouli and her staff have concocted to please their thirsty guests. Next door at the Korali, lies the Mediterranean restaurant that serves traditional Greek cuisine ranging from Horatiki salad to grilled octopus to a dish comprised of quinoa, salmon, cucumbers and dill. Adjacent to the Korali is the Naia property, which is best
known for its Sunset Cocktail Party that goes on every night from 7-9pm. A sweeping, inventive cocktail menu is offered in its open air patio, where hotel guests can relax, sip and take in one of the most breathtaking sunsets over the mystical Aegean Sea. The Naia’s restaurant is Italian-themed, with tables and chairs lining its beautiful pool. The menu showcases items such as the sea bass carpaccio with seaweed salad and the sea bass with spinach and cannellini beans. Connecting the Kyma, and its sister properties, the Korali and Naia, resides the luxurious Satori Thalasso Spa. The spa offers a variety of treatments including traditional massages, treatments and couples treatments. At the heart of its spa’s menu is their offering known as Thalassotherapy. This particular treatment takes guests through a series of five therapeutic pools before ending up in a sauna. This is meant to help benefit people with such ailments as painful joints, back problems, arthritis, osteoporosis and water retention. No matter if the objective of a vacation is to relax, to dine on international delicacies, or to indulge in total luxury, the Myconican Collection including the Kyma, Korali and Naia contain every aspect of many different indulgences that could create an amazing, personalized experience.

Maine’s Coastal Luxury
INN BY THE SEA By CoriNne O’Connor
O
verlooking the Casco Bay in Cape Elizabeth, Maine one can find the most relaxing and gorgeous place to vacation, Inn by the Sea. The luxurious getaway is accompanied by out of this world hospitality. The way that the inn operates is inspired by the natural coastal surroundings, as they are eco-friendly in impressive ways. The establishment appreciates all things local and uses recycled objects in most of their products such as towels, cleaning products and exercise equipment. Some of these items even benefit charities such as habitat restoration for bunnies. Additionally, the beautiful gardens surrounding the inn provide food and habitat for the local wildlife.

PURELY MICHIGAN A photo essay by photographer ANDREW WERNER

veryone loves the unexpected, especially when the unexpected exceeds expectations.
Forget what you think you know about Detroit. The city has been having going through a renaissance over the past few years and I recently had the pleasure, thanks to Pure Michigan travel, to get a first hand look at some of the hotspots, boutique restaurants and places giving a new life to a classic town. Using the Arts as a strong factor in the city’s building blocks, galleries and museums such as; 1xRun, the Library Street Collective, the Detroit Institute of Arts (where Diego Rivera’s famous Detroit Industry mural is located), and the Motown Museum, Detroit is attracting visitors who want to learn more about it’s the past and experience it’s present. Pewabic Pottery was a trip favorite – showcasing not only beautiful pieces of world famous pottery, the landmark also focuses on the brands’ founder Mary Chase Perry Stratton and her struggle in the early 20th century to be an independent female artist in a specialized medium. 1xRun Gallery

Yet, the metal work in the capitol did not compare to the genius installation titled ‘Beyond Streaming: A Sound Mural for Flint”, by artist Jan Tichy at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. The series of intertwined pipes each contained stories and voices bringing visibility to the horrific Flint Water Crisis. Off to Grand Rapids to see more of the art scene. We toured the Grand Rapids Ballet and were granted a sneak peak backstage and the inter workings of their recent production of Alice in Wonderland. The craft team constructed beautiful costumes for the dancers multiplying exponentially the power of art by marrying the two mediums.
Keeping up with the Arts scene, we approached our second of three stops in Michigan in Lansing – the state capitol. The ornate building towered over its surroundings creating the grandiose visual of strength and power. In a time where more was more, this building featured beautiful architecture and attention to details from the stained glass ceilLansing Capitol Building
Undeniably one of my favorite parts of this trip was visiting the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Through their archives of the museums’ fashion collection. even left me speechless. Meyer May’s iconic home was another remarkable stop on our tour. The home, designed and furnished by world-renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright is a piece of art all unto itself. A fete of style and engineering in its own time (built in 1908) the house features bold linear elements, ‘new technology’ for its day, and a strategic layout to provide privacy for the family. Did you know that Meyer May was the first retailer to put clothing on hangers in a retail store?

The arts in Grand Rapids have boomed to festival status with the creation of ArtPrize, the competition that turns the city into a living gallery – installations in every medium through downtown. According to Todd Herring, the director of communications for ArtPrize ‘In 2016, 1,453 works created by artists from 40 states and 44 countries were exhibited in 170 venues.’ Awarding over $145k to artists and attracting over 500,000 people to the area, ArtPrize is considered one of the top attended public events in the world. spent time at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park viewing the work of artist Ai Weiwei as well as the botanical grounds. Ai Weiwei’s story is fascinating and parallels many of the current day political situations that are present while expressing them stunningly through artistic allegory. It really didn’t matter which way you looked in any the three cities of Michigan that I visited, the presence of art, in every medium, was always existent. Take time to travel, explore new opportunities and discover the unexpected.

ONCE UPON A DREAM By Tash Bazika
A
little girl would prance around her room, wearing her bright, sparkly blue princess dress, a glimmering plastic tiara with a twinkle star wand in hand, dreaming of the days that one day she would be a princess. This little girl is all of us, we all long for the days coveted in elegant gowns, diamonds upon diamonds, and a castle fit for a beautiful princess and her handsome prince. Director Darko Tresnjak provided a beautiful picture of every little girls dream with his astounding Broadway show Anastasia. Inspired by 20th Century Fox’s 1997 animated film and the 1956 movie, Tresnjak brilliantly executed a fairy tale of a musical by pleasing the kids with the ‘Disneyesque’ feel, satisfying the sentimental adults, who obtain knowledge of the Romanoff’s history and provided comfort to the tradition of musical comedy.
134 | resident.com
The story of a girl with an identity crisis, a man who never learned to trust and an array of comical characters provided 2 hours and 25 minutes of entertainment, adventure and a rollercoaster of emotions. Anya, played by the talented Christy Altomare adopted the character with such passion and pride; the audience was fooled, and distracted by her warmth and incredible voice. Paired with the handsome Derek Klena, who plays Dmitry, a con man with a total disregard for anything but monetary value, the two invite an unspoken chemistry throughout their journey from Russia to France. Accompanied by the very amusing Vlad, played by John Bolton, the three embark on a quest to convince the only remaining grandmother, that Anya is her long lost grand daughter Anastasia.
Tresnjak proves that even the most cliché story with a romantic young couple, a villain in pursuit and a supporting of comic characters can be an irresistible show, when combined with taste, craftsmanship and a willing moratorium of incredulity. Spectators were dazzled with bright lights that occupied their irises, spectacular props, choreography and feel of an old fashioned musical living in bliss. We were taken back by the theatrics, the projections on the wall and the sound that filled the entire room leaving no corner still. Anastasia filled our hearts with love and courage, and concluded our princess dreams, to create an unforgettable experience, perfect for families or adorned fans of the historical anecdote.

SUMMER THEATER IN THE CITY The Terms of my Surrender, 1984, midsummer Night’s Dream, & Curvy Widow By Barry Bassis
T
hink what you will about President Trump’s abilities as a President, on one point everyone is agreed: he is a master of making himself the center of attention. Television, newspapers, and the internet are fixated on him. Even the theater reflects his presence. If not for Trump, would Michael Moore be on Broadway? “The Terms of my Surrender,” directed by Michael Mayer, is a rallying cry for Democrats. Much of the political talk is familiar to those who follow the news. Among his better bits is a spoof of TSA regulations. However, a long routine with an American and Canadian audience member to see who knew more about the other’s country was a misfire. Moore described his early experiences, notably his election to the local school board when he was in high school and his protest to President Reagan in Bitburg, Germany. He supports the accounts with photographic proof. Moore spoke about his book “Stupid White Men,” which was supposed to come out on September 11, 2001. The publisher, HarperCollins postponed the release, then demanded revisions and finally decided to pulp the book. Moore, speaking at Rutgers University, explained to the audience what was happening and read two chapters of the book. A librarian who happened to be there contacted the librarian associations. They held protests that forced the publisher to issue the book, which became a best seller. Then, Moore brought out the librarian herself, Ann Sparanese, who turned out to be fascinating as she spoke about the importance of libraries and the disastrous effect of funding cuts. Moore ended the overlong evening with an appropriately
Chivers (lighting) and Tom Gibbons (sound design)-provide a mesmerizing experience. We may not be living in 1984, but the parallels are disturbing. It’s a must-see production for those seeking powerful theater. Shakespeare in the Park began the summer with the provocative “Julius Caesar” where a Trump-lookalike was assassinated. The follow-up production, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” directed by Lear DeBessonet, generated nothing but laughter and good feelings. The comedy is played by a large cast, but there are some furious monologue about the poisoning of the water in Flint, Michigan by the Republican administration. When Kellyanne Conway coined the term “alternative facts,” within days George Orwell’s dystopian novel, “1984,” shot to the top of the bestseller list. Now there is a London stage import on Broadway, an intense production (adapted and directed by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan). Tom Sturridge is Winston Smith, who labors in the Oceania Ministry of Truth under the ever watchful eye of Big Brother. He keeps a diary (which is forbidden) and then becomes involved in a love affair with Julia (Olivia Wilde). There is no privacy in the brave new world and the love scenes take place off-stage but on camera, which the audience can see. Reed Birney (a Tony winner last year for “The Humans”) is chilling as O’Brien (the party official in charge of the torture that ultimately takes place in Room 101). The writer/directors and their superb design team--Chloe Lamford and Tim Reid (set and video scheme), Natasha

standout performances. Annaleigh Ashford as Helena pretty much steals the show. However, there are also comic gems by Puck (played by Kristine Nielsen) and Danny Burstein as Nick Bottom. Phylicia Rashad is a bewitching Titania. The mood was enhanced by David Rockwell’s scenic design and the soulful music by Justin Levine, played by a six-man band and sung with style by Marcelle DaviesLashley “Curvy Widow” is an autobiographical musical comedy by Bobby Goldman with songs by Drew Brody. At the beginning, her husband dies. She goes on a search for sex and love, starting with match.com and going on to porn sites. Not surprisingly, she meets some losers, including married men. Some of it is funny (e.g., Bobby learning she can pay for the funeral with her credit card and asks if she can get miles). Though it works up to a sort of “An Unmarried Woman” happy ending, “Curvy Widow” is mildly depressing. Bobby’s late husband, James Goldman (the Academy Award winning author of “Lion in Winter”) was a better writer. The show’s best asset is its star, Nancy Opel, who can deliver a song or a funny line with style.

We congratulate Mr. Walsh on all he has done and saved. If you want more info on him and the ponies, contact me. I wish I had more space, for this fascinating and informative and interesting man. Thank you Mr. Walsh for all you do to make the world a better place.
