LETTER from

THE EDITOR H

ere at the Resident, it’s been a hot summer—and we don’t just mean the temperatures. We’ve been kneedeep in restaurant openings, luxurious getaways, and party-hopping; it’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.

unique entertaining ideas for the last unofficial summer soiree. Finally, no issue is complete without an exclusive interview with a notable New Yorker, and this one is certainly no exception. Personally, I had a great time interviewing our gorgeous cover girl, Andi Dorfman, the former Bachelorette star who is as fun (and funny) as she is beautiful. We got the scoop on what it’s really like to have your life picked apart by the public (I give Andi credit!), and had the opportunity to chat about important things—like the best pizza in NYC (a favorite topic of most New Yorkers, I think).

And while we’ve certainly been enjoying the season in the city, we’ve found plenty of time to hit the Hamptons social scene and check out the latest and greatest from our favorite neighbor to the east. From new eateries to longtime foodie favorites, in this issue you’ll find some of our picks for Hamptons dining at its best. Once the summer comes to a close (we’re not rushing it, of course!), it will be time to start planning your next escape, so check out our coverage of travel near and far, from exotic Grenada and always-happening South Beach, to England, Italy, and more.

So as the summer rolls on and the clock ticks toward autumn, get out there and hit the beach, barbeques, and other requisite summer rituals, and we’ll keep working round the clock, eating, drinking, and traveling in style, all to serve you better.

Speaking of summer coming to a close (again, no rush! Doesn’t it feel like it just began?), if you’re looking to celebrate Labor Day a little differently this year, we’ve come up with some

Summer Sequels

I Channing Tatum in Magic Mike

t’s the summer of the sequel, but none equals Jurassic World for sheer entertainment. That said, Channing Tatum’s Magic Mike XXL is as frothy as latte Frappuccino from Starbucks. The New York Times gave it a thumbs up, but I kept hoping Matthew McConaughey would show up to give this movie a darker, stronger story line. The original had all the same beef but told the seamier truth about male strippers. This version makes it look like a cool summer job and is what it’s going to look like when it comes to Broadway as a musical. Channing Tatum is an inventive dancer and this movie revolves around him. The former stripper confesses to having basic emotions: “I really get inspired by songs. If I hear a really sexual, sensual slow song, I want to go have sex. I’m very animalistic when it comes to stuff like that.” Openly gay Matt Bomer, who we know can act from his tour de force performance as an AIDS victim in The Normal Heart, strips and sings this time out. My prediction: He wants the lead in the Broadway version of this sanitized show. Despite looking good undressed, he claims, “I never feel more confident and comfortable than when I’m wearing a Tom Ford suit.”

Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello at Magic Mike premiere

Penn and Teller on Broadway

Looking taller and better than the rest of the pack, Sofía Vergara’s fiancé, Joe Manganiello, bumps and grinds like a professional. He said, “I train like a pro-athlete, not like an actor who’s just trying to look pretty.” Making a surprise appearance is Michael Strahan, who can’t stop grinning as he bares as much as the network will let him and not violate his morality clause. He said, “When it comes to the camera, I can do my thing. But I’m bashful.” Not in this movie. Sexy Amber Heard plays Channing’s romantic interest but reveals, “I am a proud member of the LGBT community and could never bear the idea that someone could say I was closeted.”

Penn and Teller Penn and Teller, the magicians who are so popular they have a theater named after them in Las Vegas, opened on Broadway and the critics raved. aute couture,” a French term that translates to “high sewing” or “high fashion,” can be traced back to the eighteenth century when a new genre of garment-making— personalized and aesthetic and handexecuted—appeared on the market. Today, the same process can be applied to hair, thanks to Angelo David Pisacreta. Inside his Midtown salon, located at 420 Madison Ave, clients can finally achieve that level of striking, healthy-looking hair through Couture Hair Additions, Extensions, and Wigs—Angelo David’s original creation made from 100% human hair. His work has been featured in magazines like Cosmopolitan, Avenue on the Beach, and Women’s Running, just to name a few. And in a recent post on purseblog, Aviva Drescher of the Real Housewives of New York City revealed that her bag held no other than Angelo David Couture Small Travel Paddle Brush, Angelo David VOL Spray, and Angelo David Smooth. All Couture Hair treatments begin with an initial consultation customized to the goals of each client. Once the design is perfected, trained stylists fit the Couture Hair according to the individual’s desired look, seamlessly fusing the native with the non-native strands. Then they blend the hair by cutting and styling. The result is hair that defies boundaries, optimized to be the best in texture, shade, and volume.

Angelo working his magic Photo by Linda Covello

If you’re looking for a full makeover, Angelo David Salon also offers a variety of beauty

services, from makeup to eyebrows to bridal packages. And to keep the “fashion” high, try Angelo David’s VOL line of haircare products engineered to enhance thinning, limp locks. For a cure that goes to the source, there’s his original Hair Detox, an herbal supplement that works internally to boost the appearance and composition of hair for glamour untouched by time. But the pampering doesn’t stop there. As of fall 2015, the salon is launching its all-new 2,500 square-feet of luxurious accommodations, complete with seven private VIP Hair Suites, a Hair Extension Styling Bar, a Beauty Concierge Department, and a Beauty Lounge. Clients can enjoy a manicure as they look over Madison Avenue or sip Mimosas with the bridesmaids in warm neutrals of creamy-white, oyster, and espresso. “Color corrective and indirect lighting bring the salon’s ambiance to life as do the stunning chandeliers and decorative pendants,” says renowned interior designer Michele Pelafas, the mind behind the concept. Angelo David Salon is already a top professional in its class, but its approaching grand opening is an “ambitious and exciting leap into the future of the salon and brand,” in the words of the owner himself. He will continue to seek the finest in “haute” hair.

ROCK THE BLOCK THE 10th ANNIVERSARY P4H BLOCK ISLAND CHALLENGE By Heather Girgenti

I

t only takes one weekend visit to the Hamptons to understand why it tops every destination list. From the stunning beaches to the unforgettable restaurants, there’s no doubt that the East End is truly a summertime haven. And let’s not forget the never-ending Hamptons event calendar. From a black tie gala to a bountiful local meal in a field, to al fresco live music at your favorite restaurant, you can be sure you’ll find the perfect variety of outings to fill your social calendar. But there’s one event in particular that stands out from all the rest and has really caught our attention this summer: The 10th Anniversary of Paddlers for Humanity’s Block Island Challenge on Saturday, August 29th (www.p4h.org). Paddlers for Humanity (P4H) is an allvolunteer, local non-profit organization based in East Hampton that is dedicated to bettering the lives of children. Ten years ago, a group of local fisherman, surfers, and business owners got together to turn a popular summer hobby into a charitable movement that has since raised over $1 million. The one-of-a-kind Block Challenge is an 18-mile open-ocean group paddle from Montauk to Block Island. That alone makes this annual event a total bucket list item. Throw in the fact that this organization donates all proceeds to support innovative and comprehensive mental health programs for kids and youth, and you’ve earned yourself some good karma and an unforgettable story to tell your grandchildren. After all, not everyone can say they’ve

conquered 18 miles of the beautiful Long Island waters on a paddleboard. The best part, however, is that the event organizers guarantee that anyone can participate in the paddle, from beginners to experts. This end-of-summer adventure is not a race; it’s an experience. The group takes several breaks throughout the stretch and paddlers are encouraged to sit down on their boards whenever necessary. At least four support boats and three jet skis manned by certified lifeguards from Hamptons Lifesaving Association will be with the paddlers throughout the entire six-hour journey. The P4H family is extremely excited and proud to be hosting the 10th Anniversary fundraiser. “We’d really love to see all our friends who have paddled with us in the past come back and join us for this extraordinary milestone, as well as anyone who has ever even considered participating before,” explained Fred Doss, co-President. “Collectively, we can make this one our most successful fundraising paddles ever.” Participating paddlers must raise or contribute a minimum of $1500 to participate, $750 for paddlers under 18-years-old. Participants can learn more and sign up here: bit. ly/1CBYIla.

World-renowned artist, Peter Beard, is creating an amazing limited edition poster for the event and all paddlers will get one. You’ll remember it forever.

Grape-Nuts Cauliflower Tots Prep time: 45 minutes Total time: 1 hour 30 minutes Serves 6, 6 tots per person

Ingredients 6 cups cauliflower florets (from a 2-pound head of cauliflower) 1/2 cup Grape-Nuts cereal 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1 large egg 1/4 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1/2 teaspoon salt Olive oil cooking spray

water. Return to pan and mash the cauliflower with a potato masher. Allow to cool about 10 minutes.

When all of the tots have been formed, coat with another light mist of olive oil cooking spray.

Meanwhile, in a blender or food processor combine Grape-Nuts cereal with cayenne pepper and process until finely ground. Pour into a shallow dish and set aside.

Bake, turning once halfway through, until browned, 35 to 4 5 minutes.

In a large bowl combine mashed cauliflower, flour, Parmesan cheese, egg, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Preheat oven to 400°F. Cover a large baking sheet with non-stick foil and lightly coat with olive oil cooking spray. Using a 1-tablespoon measure, scoop the cauliflower mixture and form into a “tot” shape with your hand. Carefully roll in ground Grape-Nuts mixture and place on prepared baking sheet, about 1 inch apart.

Thai Coconut Shrimp with Sweet and Spicy Chili Dipping Sauce Prep time: 15 minutes Total time: 25 minutes Serves 4, 4-5 shrimp per person

Ingredients Coconut Shrimp: 1/2 cup Post Shredded Wheat cereal, crushed (about 1 big biscuit) 1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 egg whites 1 pound large peeled and deveined fresh shrimp, tails attached (16-20 size) Sweet and Spicy Chili Dipping Sauce: 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce 1 teaspoon low-sodium soy sauce 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar 1 teaspoon Sriracha 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil Garnish: Lime wedges Cilantro

Directions Preheat oven to 400°F. Cover a large baking sheet with non-stick foil, set aside. In a medium bowl, combine crushed Post Shredded Wheat cereal, shredded coconut, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. In another small bowl, whisk egg whites until frothy. Holding shrimp by the tail, dip first into the egg whites (shaking off any excess) then dip into cereal-and-coconut mixture. Lightly press coating onto the shrimp, ensuring all sides are covered. Place shrimp on prepared baking sheet. Bake 5 minutes on each side, or until shrimp are cooked through and the coating is lightly browned. Garnish shrimp with a squeeze of fresh lime and cilantro sprigs. For Sweet and Spicy Chili Dipping Sauce, combine all ingredients in a small bowl and serve with the shrimp.

Fruity Pebbles Confetti Ice Cream Squares Prep time: 30 minutes Total time: 2 hours 30 minutes, or overnight Serves 16, 1 square per person

Ingredients 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 3/4 cup sugar 1 large egg 1 egg yolk 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1-1/2 teaspoons cornstarch 1 cup Fruity Pebbles cereal, divided use 2 cups Light Vanilla ice cream

Directions Preheat oven to 350°F. Line an 8-inch square baking pan with non-stick aluminum foil, making sure to leave enough overhang on the sides. Set aside. In a stand mixer, beat butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, egg yolk, and vanilla. Scrape down the sides as needed. In a medium bowl, combine flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and cornstarch. With mixer on low, gradually add flour mixture to wet ingredients and beat until combined. Gently fold in 1/2 cup of the Fruity Pebbles cereal using a rubber spatula. Press the cookie dough evenly into the prepared baking pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until very lightly browned on top. Cool completely on a wire rack. Spread ice cream evenly over cookie base in the baking pan. Top with remaining 1/2 cup of cereal. Lightly press cereal into ice cream. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze until set, at least 2 hours. When ready to serve, lift foil out of pan and cut into 16 2-inch squares.

Andi Dorfman The Bachelorette Star on Life and Love in the Public Eye— and in the Big Apple By Pamela Jacobs

hen Andi Dorfman enters a room, it lights up. The 28-yearold Atlanta native—who went from a cast member on Season 18 of The Bachelor to the star of The Bachelorette in Season 10—seems to have been born for television. She’s got the looks, of course, but beyond that, she’s got the energy and personality to match. Less than three years ago, however, this smart, sassy young woman was a long way from the silver screen. In 2012, Dorfman graduated from law school, and shortly after was putting criminals behind bars, working as an Assistant District Attorney for Fulton County, Georgia.

In the blink of an eye, after winning viewers’ and producers’ hearts in The Bachelor, despite (or perhaps, because of) pulling herself from the show when she realized Juan Pablo when not the man of her dreams, Dorfman was in the starring role of one of television’s most popular shows. She had 25 men vying for her affection, and the whole world taking notice. Fresh off her foray into Bachelorette-hood—following a public breakup and a dramatic year—Dorfman packed her bags and did what many independent young women in need of a change have done: She moved to New York. As of March 2015, the former Bachelorette is now a current New Yorker who’s got a whole lot going on. On a warm, summer morning, with the entirety of Central Park in our line of sight, we sat down and discussed her experiences as an overnight reality star, her life as a novice New Yorker, and most importantly, the limitless opportunities that are unfolding for this bright, charming legal-counselor-turned-cover-girl.

were known for on The Bachelor was pulling yourself from the show [season 18 with Juan Pablo]. At the time this probably felt like a risky decision. Did you think that was the end of reality TV for you? Was it a difficult decision?

[Juan Pablo] and I knew that I was attracted to him, so it was one of those situations where, yes, it was outside the box, but I was at a point in my life where I wasn’t desperately seeking love—but I wanted it—so I thought, ‘why not?’

Andi Dorfman: I actually didn’t find it to

be risky at all. I had come on the show to find love—obviously I wanted to travel and meet people, as well, and it was a great experience—but once that was done and I realized there was no chance of finding love with him, it was kind of obvious that it didn’t work out and so I thought ‘okay, let’s pack up and roll out and get back to life.’ I had a job and a family, a life waiting for me back at home, so as soon as the love wasn’t there, it was pretty easy to decide to go.

went on to star in The Bachelorette. When they first approached you, was it an immediate ‘yes,’ or did you have to think it over?

Pamela Jacobs: One of the first things you

would find love through the show?

AD: No [laughs]! I think it was an immediate no, actually. I didn’t come from a world of entertainment or a family that’s in this industry—I wasn’t an aspiring model or actress—this was just something that I had done once, and I never thought it was my future. My first reaction was been-there-done-that, but then they started talking to me and I realized there was another chance at finding love, so I thought, ‘well, maybe this isn’t so bad after all.’

AD: I wouldn’t say that I was confident—I

PJ: How confident did you feel that you

wanted me to do it more than I wanted to at first. My parents are super supportive, and always have been. Plus, my sister is married and my parents are happily married, so it was just like, yeah, why not give it a try? They wanted me to go out there and have some fun, possibly find someone, and have an adventure.

PJ: When you called off your engagement, everyone seemed to have an opinion and a reaction. What’s it like having your love life examined and dissected by the world?

AD: It’s crazy—and it sucks. I know that you have to have thick skin, and it’s really easy to say that, but when you don’t come from an environment where everyone knows your business and everything is on public display, and you’re suddenly plucked from obscurity into this whole world, it’s a shock. I knew what I signed up for, but it doesn’t mean I knew everything that comes with it and that I could handle everything. People have an opinion on your love life and are saying all kinds of mean things. It was also hard because I was going through a breakup; I was broken-

hearted, and if that’s not bad enough, I had to do it publicly and had to hear everyone’s opinions, piled on top of a broken heart.

PJ: Were there—or are there—times when you have to stay off of social media because you can’t bear to read all of the hurtful things?

AD: Absolutely, especially during the show.

PJ: You officially moved to NY recently; how has

PJ: So are you on hiatus? AD: I think New York City is different from anywhere else in the entire world, which is why I chose to come here. There is an energy in New York that’s unlike anywhere else. I never feel like there’s nowhere to go, or feel alone or bored here, and it’s the perfect distraction. I needed to get out of Atlanta and I needed a distraction; I needed to feel motivated and alive, so to speak, and New

There were times when I was just a ball of tears while reading comments. It’s crazy to me—some of the things people say—and even though you try to turn a blind eye to it, you still know people are saying it, and you’re only human. It comes with the territory, sure, but it doesn’t mean that it’s easy.

PJ: You’ve befriended some of your fellow Bachelor and Bachelorette alumnae. Do you share juicy details with each other and gossip?

AD: Oh, for sure—we are women [laughs]! We definitely talk, but the friendships are so interesting when it comes to the show. I know it seems very ironic that you can be friends with someone who dated the same guy—and I use the term ‘dating’ lightly—but people don’t realize that you spend a lot of time with the Dress: Jitrois girls on the show [The Bracelet: Christopher Designs Bachelor], way more time than with the lead, so you experience York City has definitely provided that for me. things with them that you have with no one else, and you form a bond through this PJ: Do you feel that dating in NY is very different from in the south? crazy experience. Some of my friends from the show will be in my wedding one day, and every time anyone is in New York we go out and have fun—and gossip a little, maybe [laughs]— but we’re also involved in each other’s lives. It’s been more than a year since that first season, so we’ve moved on past that and we don’t talk about that anymore; it’s just a normal friendship.

adjusting to life in the city been?

AD: I wouldn’t really know, but my friends say that dating here is tough, like it’s a game and competition, and I’ve witnessed that it’s a whole other level here. Like in the South, girls do not go up to guys—you wait for the guy to come up to you. Not so much here in New York! I’ve heard it’s pretty cutthroat. I’m not in the phase where I really care about dating too much right now. I’ve dated enough guys in the past year to hold

AD: Look, if the right guy came along, I’d certainly be open to it, but I’m not actively looking. PJ: What are you working on currently? AD: I have a few projects I’m working on right now. There’s a People.com web series, focusing on my life in New York, which is really fun, and I’m also writing a book. It’s about my experience [on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette ], but more than that, it’s meant to be an empowering, tonguein-cheek diary-ofa-breakup. I went through a very public breakup, and there are some things that make it very different from a typical one, but certainly plenty of things that are similar to the girl-next-door’s breakup experience. I never thought I would write a book—I never considered myself a writer—but I have loved it, probably more than I have loved anything I’ve done in my life. It’s very therapeutic and I found a passion I didn’t know I had.

PJ: And do you see yourself staying in NY long term? AD: I love it. I would definitely have to adjust, in order to raise kids here. I mean, I can barely survive the crosswalks, so I don’t know how I would survive with a stroller, but I’d love to stay here. I’ve kind of learned to not predict the future, though. I mean, two years ago I was spending my days in a courthouse as an attorney, and now here I am looking out over Central Park. I can’t predict the future, but I’m definitely here for a while.

While pointing out that there are “so many great options” for restaurants in this city, Andi says she’s “a sucker for pizza.” What kind? “I love the greasy $2 slice of pizza,” she says. “And you can’t put the paper towel on the cheese—it’s cheating.” We totally agree. And where does she get her greasy slices? Bleecker Street Pizza, among others. And how does the Atlanta native handle all of the great food choices? She tries to hit as many as possible: “I haven’t cooked once since I’ve lived here. The burners on my stove have never been turned on.” Favorites include The Meatball Shop, Joseph Leonard, and Ralph Lauren’s new hotspot, The Polo Bar.

Shopping

When asked if she’s a big shopper, and where she likes to go, Andi has three words: “Trouble. Just trouble.” We guess she likes shopping here as much as we do. It seems she’s especially fond of the downtown choices. “I call Meatpacking District, Union Square, and SoHo my Bermuda Triangle,” she jokes. “I get lost between those three shopping areas.” Especially dangerous for her are coop & spree, INTERMIX, and the ever-popular Chelsea Market.

Nightlife

So how does the former southern girl like to spend an evening out on the town? No nightclubs for her; instead, she prefers a night of “dinner, great food and wine, and great company.” Luckily, there’s plenty of that in this city.

New York Pastime

“I love just walking around [the city],” Andi explains, when talking about her life here. “You just never know what you’re going to find. Sometimes I’ll wake up really early and just walk. Often, you get the most peaceful moments of the day just walking around the city very early in the morning. I love it.” Us too.

Travel

Andi definitely realizes how lucky she is to have traveled so much through the Bachelorette, and since then. But where has she liked best? “Belgium was amazing, and never on my radar before” Andi says. “I didn’t know what to expect but it became one of my favorite countries I’ve ever been to. I also loved Vietnam. I loved the culture, and just driving around and finding places, seeing the culture in all the little villages. And of course, New Zealand was so beautiful.”

Dress: Jitrois Bracelet: Christopher Designs

But it doesn’t end there for this globetrotter: “There are so many amazing places in the U.S., too. We often forget that our own backyard has so many amazing places to offer.” Well said, Andi.

Staying Healthy in the Hamptons By Nicole Castillo

H

ealthy isn’t a goal—it’s a way of living. As the trend towards healthy living grows nationally, the Hamptons has become an epicenter of health and wellness programs. From a large range of fitness facilities and programming to several farm-to-table restaurants, the healthy living movement in the Hamptons is prominent, and growing. All healthy lifestyles start with a nutritious diet. Surrounded by acres of farmland and miles of water providing fresh produce and seafood, the Hamptons has much to offer home cooks. From local corn and tomatoes to fresh-caught striped bass and tuna, the menu ideas are limitless for a delicious homecooked meal. But if cooking isn’t your thing, several Hamptons restaurants take healthy eating to a whole new level. Fresh Hamptons in Bridgehampton is one of the top healthy eating restaurants. Fresh’s owners proclaim themselves “yoga-lovin,’ health-food eating foodies with a background in high-end gourmet fare.” Their Prana (aka life force) menu is an answered prayer for the yoga crowd. Looking for gluten-free, vegan, or vegetarian options? Fresh has them. Additionally, the menu offers fresh local fish, organic chicken, ribs, steak, and fries in several portion sizes for the light eaters.

48 • Resident August 2015

Sample menu items include: raw local organic kale salad with garlic and hemp seed hearts, tomatoes, peppers, radishes, and fines herbs with a lemongrass vinaigrette; the “Fresh” Summer Roll with julienned hearts of romaine, beets, carrots, avocado, peppers, scallions, sprouts, daikon wrapped in collard green leaf with tomato chipotle vegan aioli; and grilled Moroccan spiced hanger steak with ovenroasted cipollini onions and natural beef jus. Even drinks and desserts at Fresh focus on

healthy eating, with the gluten-free brownie sundae and special mocktails, such as cayenne-infused fresh-squeezed lemonade with muddled mint. (freshhamptons.com) Of course, healthy living also incorporates fitness. The Hamptons is replete with yoga studios, spin classes, bootcamps, and more. But one workout that stands out for the healthy lifestyle is barre fitness. Elements Fitness

Studio opened in 2014 in the Hamptons, bringing the barre to the beach. The Elements style of fitness is inspired by a combination of the Lotte Berk technique and founder Andrea Foronarola Hunsberger’s own unique style from her 15 years of dance experience. Hunsberger’s barre classes fuse isometric exercises and interval training with ballet conditioning and the principles of Pilates core work and yoga stretches. Barre fitness allows for a great workout while toning and achieving a healthy level of exercise for the body. Elements Fitness Studio has also introduced new stand-up paddle barre fitness classes this season. These new classes embrace the healthy living lifestyle by offering participants exercise while also enjoying an outdoor experience. SUP is a total-body strengthening and conditioning exercise due to the nature of movement while paddling. It pairs the cardio conditioning and the core stability of SUP with the isometric exercises from a barre class, creating the ultimate strengthening and toning experience. Elements Fitness Studio offers a full roster of classes year round, all of which emphasize a fit lifestyle. (elementsfitnessstudio.com) Whether it’s eating healthy or keeping fit, The Hamptons offers a plethora of options for maintaining a healthy lifestyle all season long.

Weight Loss, and Its Impossibility Without Sleep By Glen Tobias, RD

The Hormonal Trifecta

W

ouldn’t it be nice to wake up every morning feeling totally rested? More often than not we are not fortunate enough to feel that way; we sometimes feel as though we haven’t slept at all. Sleep is so much more important than we think it is. Sleep loss plays havoc with so many medical, physical, and hormonal aspects of our body, including our weight. Day-to-day life wears your body down—even more so if you exercise—so it must repair and rebuild while you sleep. If you don’t get enough sleep, you can never reach your potential, as you never fully repair. If this goes on for too long, your body’s immune system can decline to the point of illness. At this point, you’ll have no choice but to rest. If you don’t sleep enough, the “Hormonal Trifecta” will ensue, thus preventing weight loss, decreasing performance, and delaying recovery—not to mention wreaking havoc on your appetite. The first thing that happens is the body considers lack of sleep a stress, and when the body is under stress it releases Cortisol, a stress hormone which breaks down muscle tissue. Muscle is “fat burning machinery” and it’s critical not to lose any, or at least to minimize the loss. If left unchecked, you will suffer a decrease in performance due to the reduced lean body mass and a delay in recovery. This will, in turn, lower your metabolism, thus requiring you to eat less to maintain your current weight. The second hormone in the trifecta is Leptin.

50 • Resident August 2015

Leptin is a hormone that makes you feel full and stops you from eating, and is reduced when you don’t get adequate rest. Once reduced, you will tend to eat more and gain weight.

The final hormone in this trifecta is Ghrelin, whose function is to make you hungry. Without optimal rest, Ghrelin levels rise, thus causing you to eat more than normal, again adding to weight gain and preventing body composition goals.

One of the most important things you can do to help yourself lose weight and perform at your best is to get a good night’s sleep.

Sleep Cycle Questions Now consider these critical questions: 1. Have you ever awakened in the middle of the night and felt fully rested? This is what happens when you wake up at the end of a sleep cycle. 2. Have you ever slept all night long and felt like you were hit by a train and have no energy? This is what happens when you wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle. An average sleep cycle is about 45 minutes, so the minimum amount of sleep necessary for an adult is seven and a half hours—but nine is optimal. So for optimal rest and recovery, my recommendation is this: Knowing when you must wake up in the morning, go to bed nine hours and 15 minutes prior.

Sleep and Nutrition How to combine the two for best results:

• •

Drink 6-8oz of organic tart cherry juice (not concentrate); It is a powerful antiinflammatory and has natural melatonin. This will help you fall asleep and stay asleep. Do not eat a large meal right before bed, as this can keep some people awake. Avoid excess sugar in the evenings—no ice cream or chips! Avoid alcohol, as it will prevent you from staying asleep. Avoid a PM-analgesic; it helps you fall asleep but prevents you from getting into the deep restorative levels of sleep.

Finally, remember the Critical Control Points (CCP’s) of weight/fat loss are: • • • •

Eat slightly hypo-caloric (less calories than your body needs to maintain itself). Hydrate adequately. Exercise regularly. Last but not least: SLEEP. Without adequate rest, all your hard work may be for naught.

Dr. Judith Hellman’s Hellman Dermatology Group

Keeping the Big Apple’s Skin Beautiful By Skylar Lewis

Portrait of an Artist-turnedDermatologist Rarely do you see a talented violinist turn into a celebrated dermatologist, but Dr. Judith Hellman is unlike anyone else. Dr. Hellman, who has been profiled in The New York Times, said she wanted to do more than play music, so with her father’s encouragement, who was also a dermatologist, she pursued a career in dermatology to help people look their best and to solve her patients’ problems, including serious acne, sun damage, sagging skin, and rosacea. For the past 16 years, Hellman Dermatology has been located in state-of-the-art offices on Central Park South. Dr. Hellman makes all of her patients feel beautiful. “Unlike many top practices, I do all the cosmetic treatments, because I believe my patients deserve to benefit from my years of training and experience, and should be assured of the best outcome. The optimal result with the greatest safety is my primary concern,” says Dr. Hellman, who emphasizes the importance of not only understanding her patients’ skin, but also her patients themselves. A celebrity patient—who asked that her name not be used because she looks 10 years younger than she is—confided: “I’ve been with Dr. Hellman since she first opened, and can attest that she is a master in the field of cosmetic dermatology. She helped me maintain a naturally youthful appearance that matches how I feel, and how to avoid the invasive surgical procedures of my mother’s generation. Friends and family members have commented on how good I look, without ever surmising that I ‘had something done.’”

Lasers That Make Acne Disappear

52 • Resident August 2015

Hellman Dermatology has the top five new lasers in the world, representing a milliondollar investment for Dr. Hellman’s patients. “They are the Ferraris of lasers,” she laughs. Hellman offers a plethora of treatments— along with three that she considers her niche—including Botox, fillers, and the very best acne and acne scar treatments with lasers, safe for all skin types and tones. Dr. Hellman believes that fixing people’s skin problems can change their lives: With her laser acne and acne scar treatments, her patients get clear skin and gain self confidence. Unlike Accutane and oral antibiotics, there are no oral medications taken—so no unpleasant side effects and no long-term systemic health risks.

Anti-Aging Treatments Dr. Hellman, who’s appeared on NBC 4 News and CBS news discussing her laser and cosmetic dermatology treatments, says she believes her natural looking Botox and filler techniques are the secret to maintaining a youthful yet natural look. She also relies on her specially formulated signature products. “Of my line of products, my antioxidant-rich, anti-aging creams are the most critical ones.” She stresses that the most important of all anti-aging tactics is sunblock. “The sun is a primary cause of early aging,” says Dr. Hellman. This dermatologist is easy to talk to and delivers real yet natural looking results for patients from their teens to the forever young. “No one ever asks my patients what they have had done,” says Dr. Hellman proudly. The secret behind their naturally glowing look is kept between her and her patients.

Breast Augmentation: What to Consider for Optimal Results By Rafael G. Magana, MD Plastic Surgeon Breast augmentation has become the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedure over the past few years. In 2014 alone, the number of breast augmentations done in the USA was 286,000, which was comparable to 2013 and above liposuction, which was the second most common procedure. Silicone implants have been utilized since the 1960’s and have been evolving ever since. Several generations of both silicone -gel and saline implants have appeared on the market for widespread medical use. Several scientific studies analyzing overall satisfaction in appearance and consistency have concluded that silicone is preferred over saline implants almost universally.

compared), which is not always consistent with commercial cup sizes. Most women can relate to a B or C cup, varying from one brand to another. Sometimes the difference is significant. When it comes to deciding on the size you want to be post-surgery, these are the five factors to consider: • • • • •

Your body frame size The diameter of your breasts The amount of fat that will cover the implant Skin elasticity Your desired final size

There is now a third option consisting of autologous fat transfer, meaning taking your own fat (usually from the thighs) and carefully injecting it into the breast. Although this method seems to be gaining traction, it is still not widely used and is reserved for patients desiring a relatively small amount of volume increase to their breasts. Additionally, in some cases, pre-operative expansion with a negative pressure system is required.

Once these are established, then other subtleties are addressed, such as breast asymmetry, position of the nipples, and the possible need for a concomitant breast lift. Every patient is different and breast augmentation should be customized to provide optimal results by age, breast type, skin type, position of the nipple, and desired final size. I use a sizing system that allows the patients to see and feel the different types of implants available and to place the sizers under their bra to get a general idea of the final augmentation results.

During your consult, photos and measurements will be taken to establish your actual breast size (chest circumference size and fullest portion of the breast are

Keep in mind the size of the clothes you already own, and remember that if your breast size changes significantly, you may have to change a big portion of your wardrobe. After

surgery, I recommend limiting the mobility of the arms to what is comfortable to the patient and avoiding lifting heavy objects or straining unnecessarily to avoid shifting of the implants. Postoperative fullness on the top of the breast lasts for around 3 months, and then the breasts descend to a more anatomical position. My preferred technique is known as “dual plane,” meaning that half of the implant is under the muscle and half is under the mammary gland itself. This provides a more natural appearance and reduces the likelihood of capsular contracture. The topic of breast augmentation is extensive, and the procedure requires that the plastic surgeon performing it has planned it extremely well and possesses the skills and artistic eye to obtain the best results.

Healthy Smile, Healthy You Don’t Play the “Watch and Wait” Game with Your Teeth By Dr. Irene Grafman Why is it that most people assume that it is perfectly normal to keep getting cavities and failing restorations? Why do some people have a mouth full of fillings and some have none? Are they just the lucky ones? As it turns out, it’s not just luck; however, there is more to a healthy mouth than just brushing, flossing, and avoiding sweets.

approach which identifies the cause of the disease by assessing each patient’s risk factors with a fast and simple test, and then we correct the problem by correcting the risk factors. In medicine this is called a diagnosis. Then I prescribe a treatment that is custom-fit to that individual to eliminate the risk factors and create a healthy oral environment.

of the disease and assessing your risk for future disease even before it shows up. As your doctor would, we perform tests to identify what is causing the oral disease, we discuss the changes to prevent it, and then— and only then, if necessary—treat it by surgical intervention (fillings, crowns, root canals).

We are finding out the mouth is not only part of our body, it is one of the most important parts of a patient’s health. Medical research has found a connection between oral and overall health, because bacteria found in the mouth has been linked with heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Cancers, pregnancy complications, and possibly now our weight.

Many dentists see the beginning of a cavity and put a watch on it. But the question is, “What are we watching?” Will it miraculously reverse on its own? When you go see your doctor for a routine check-up and find out you have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, does your doctor say “You know you’re heading for a heart attack, but we are going to put a watch on it, and if you get chest pains give us a call and we’ll get you in for surgery”? It sounds ridiculous when you think of it like that, but that is what many dentists have been saying for decades. Most likely, your doctor will recommend dietary and lifestyle changes to try to prevent the heart attack from happening. This is exactly how I treat my patients.

With summer in full swing, it’s natural to get busy with beach parties and traveling, and it seems easier to put off your preventative dental visits until fall, but I urge you to put your prevention plan first and you will find not only will you save money in unwanted and avoidable dental procedures, but you will add years to your overall health and life. A healthy mouth can lead to a healthier you.

What most people don’t realize is that decay is really a symptom of an ongoing chronic disease, which shows up on individual teeth in the form of a cavity. For all these years, a traditional philosophy of practice as dentists has been to treat the symptoms (cavities) without treating the actual cause of the disease. My personal philosophy of practice is an

How to Use Summer Mementos to Improve the Energy of Your Mind and Space By Feng Shui Master Pun-Yin

A

ugust is a good time to acquire objects from the summer that have happy memories and positive energy associated with them. Metaphysically, the time and location where the object was collected come with a vibration, and therefore, an emotional sensation. Since thought itself is in many ways an object, start pampering your own spirit with things around you, using the Feng Shui wisdom. These days, too many people are under pressure all the time, which in Feng Shui is considered a Yang (intense) state of mind— physically feeling overwhelmed. It is ever more important to nurture your own energy through objects that come with a Yin (calming) vibration to balance the intensity. So, take time for yourself to go for a nature walk; let the sun and nature’s elements heal you. To let the positive connection you tap into extend beyond, look for small stones with soft edges that are beige or gray— representing the Earth Element in Feng Shui— to bring home. This stone collection, when placed in the correct meridians in your

surrounding or chakra points on your body, can alleviate the tension in you, since the Earth Element absorbs it. A Feng Shui consultant who knows your Five Elements Chinese Astrology Composition can help you create a customized routine, using timing and direction that are beneficial to you, specifically in resetting your Chi (energy). For people who need motivation, perseverance, or confidence, elevating the Yang (progressive) energy through an object representing the Fire Elements helps. So, before the summer season ends, buy a candle holder and/or candles from a trip you are enjoying that can give you an energy boost from the positive memories associated with it. Understand that you have the power to initiate the intention, so set the intention of it by feeling the energy boost and power from it during the search.

Element in Feng Shui, to cleanse off the stress energy. Then, your mind will be refreshed and you will be more objective in how you view people and situations, therefore coming up with better solutions. In Feng Shui, the Water Element cleanses and rejuvenates all lives; a Feng Shui consultant who knows the layout of your floor plan and your own personal energy level can recommend the right type of water fountain or aquarium at the correct meridian of your space to help neutralize the tension. An energy cleanse, using elements from nature in a bath that’s customized to your own energy vibration (calculated from the Five Elements Astrology Composition) can be a powerful reset routine. Once Labor Day hits, wrap up your summer with elements that can give you the competitive edge for autumn and beyond.

Hidden Paradise Uncover the Secrets of Grenada, the Isle of Spice By Pamela Jacobs

T

he motto of the island of Grenada is “One people, one nation, one family,” and upon arrival at this tropical gem in the southeastern Caribbean, you immediately feel as though you are a part of it. It is an immensely friendly island—one in which the people are proud of their home and happy to welcome you to it—and when you take in the beauty of it all, you indeed want to belong to this family. You’ll notice a few things right away: There are no towering buildings standing in the way of the panoramic island views—nothing, in fact, taller than the highest palm tree—and the scent of flowers perfumes the warm air and mixes with that of the sea. The sea itself is a luscious blue-green, hugging the long stretch of beaches, all of which are public, because, according to Grenada law, everyone has a right to enjoy the country’s natural bounties. In short, Grenada just might be the best-kept secret in Caribbean travel; now, with the recent introduction of nonstop flights from JFK aboard JetBlue, that secret is about to be told. Luckily, there’s enough sea, sand, and swaying palm trees for everyone.

N

atural diversity is a major theme on this volcanic island; from sandy beaches along the shores to untouched jungles and mountains, brisk rivers, dramatic waterfalls, and ancient craters, this small island has a little bit of everything beautiful. In St. George’s, Grenada’s capital known as the “city on a hill,” you can go from sea level to 800 feet above it in five minutes. And although temperatures are warm year-round, the natural landscape and trade winds keep it from ever getting uncomfortable. For history buffs, Grenada is fascinating— from its roots as a French-then-British-andback-again colony in the 1700s to its fight for independence in the 1960s and 70s to its revolution and subsequent U.S. invasion in the early 1980s, much has occurred on this relatively small stretch of land.

Grenada is now, and has always been, “the island of spice.” It was the first island in the western hemisphere to export its spices, and is currently the leading producer of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, and other culinary favorites. This is seen everywhere, from the fragrant dishes to the nation’s flag, and is a source of both flavor and pride for the Grenadian people. Nowhere on the island is its friendliness, culture, warmth, and beauty more apparent than at Sandals La Source Grenada, perhaps the most luxurious of the Sandals brand resorts and definitely one of the newest. Opened in spring 2014, this all-inclusive (or “luxury included”) resort sits on one of the island’s most pristine white-sand beaches (complete with calm, glistening water, of course) and is only five minutes from the

airport (a morning JetBlue flight from JFK will have you on the beach with a drink in hand in the early afternoon). It’s consistently named one of the best adults-only allinclusives. With three distinct villages comprising a total of 225 rooms and suites, there is something for every taste. The Italian Village is made up of all-butler-service suites with features ranging from patio tranquility soaking tubs and swim-up parlor areas (entering the swimming pool directly from your patio) to Sandals’ one-of-a-kind answer to the highest level of luxury: An infinity-edge Skypool where the water seemingly meets the sky. These Skypool Suites are unique to the Italian Village, and to Sandals. Pink Gin village, named after the resort’s

beach, features rooms and suites with beach and ocean views and a host of luxurious amenities (Carrera marble, Italian porcelain floors, patio tranquility soaking tubs, to name a few). In the South Seas village, guests find Tahitianstyle suites, villas in the round, and other beautiful architectural features, as well as suites with private pool and lounge areas, outdoor showers, and waterfall features— along with a true feel of peace and serenity. No matter which village you choose, however, the service and details are impeccable; all Club Level rooms (which are available in each of the villages) come with 24/7 access to the Club Sandals Lounge, champagne welcome/check-in, hosted activities (i.e. wine tastings, cocktail parties), all-day room service, and in-room/suite fully-stocked bars. Butler Suites, of course, offer the ultimate level of pampering, with personal service provided by professional butlers (trained by the Guild of Professional English Butlers) who attend to your every need, from unpacking your bags to serving you food

and drinks, day or night. Whether you’re spending your days in your private swimming-pool-in-the-sky, floating on a raft on the tranquil Caribbean waters, at the swim-up bar, or in a poolside private cabana, one thing is certain: You’ll never go hungry and you’ll never run out of dining options. At Sandals La Source Grenada, 10 restaurants are fully included in your stay, with options including Butch’s Chophouse (a world-class New York style steakhouse), sushi at Soy, French cuisine at Le Jardinier, and open-air beachside dining at Neptune’s, to name a few. And of course, at every restaurant and bar, alcohol is included and unlimited, including a selection of Robert Mondavi wines. Perhaps most unique, when it comes to allinclusive offerings, is Sandals’ unlimited SCUBA diving and watersports, as well as all land sports and entertainment. At Sandals’ Aqua Center, you can pick up snorkeling equipment to head out on your own, sign up for SCUBA diving, or head off on a short boat ride for snorkeling at the island’s famous Underwater Sculpture Park, the world’s first underwater sculpture gallery that is a true can’t miss. Beyond that, guests have the option to take advantage of their Caribbean-inspired Red Lane Spa and a variety of local tours that include an exhilarating tubing adventure along the Balthazar River (which concludes with the world’s best rum punch), full- and half-day sightseeing tours, fishing, and champagne cruises. These island tours are highly recommended, affording the opportunity to visit an historic working rum distillery (River Antoine Rum Distillery), fascinating Fort Frederick (with incredible vista views), and the breathtaking Belmont Estate, where you can learn the traditional

Grenadian chocolate making process (with tastings, of course!), among many other island highlights. After all, Grenada is an island meant to be explored and enjoyed, and Sandals encourages this. Back at the resort, your exploration can be as limited or extensive as you want it to be. You can choose to spend your time with butlerdelivered meals and drinks, looking out onto the ocean from the privacy of your private pool, or you can swim in the pools, SCUBA in the ocean, hop from meal to meal, and end your night dancing to live music under the stars. Your vacation is anything you want it to be—it’s all included, and it’s all as enticing as the spices that give Grenada its nickname. One thing is certain: You’ll be very happy you were let in on the Grenada secret.

GETTING THERE JetBlue flies nonstop from JFK to Grenada’s Maurice Bishop International Airport twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays. Sandals La Source Grenada is a five-minute drive from the airport; transfers to and from the resort are included.

The Palms Hotel & Spa Just North of South Beach, Yet Worlds Away By Lisa Loverro

68 • Resident August 2015

T

he Palms Hotel & Spa, tucked away on a stretch of beach just north of Miami’s famed South Beach strip, is a true tropical paradise, offering a touch of class and a bit of respite from its trendy neighbor to the south. While offering the perfect escape from Miami’s fast-paced scene, the more residential area where the hotel is located is a short 10-minute cab away from the party scene on Ocean Drive, should you decide to dance the night away. Surrounded by palm trees (hence the name), this 12-story, 251-room hotel is colonialinspired in architecture and exudes a feeling of tropical splendor—something most of the hotels to its south don’t offer. The property’s pathways lead to many gardens (including a chef’s organic garden) and the beach has

a private entrance. Inspired by nature, the resort uses natural products whenever possible, from their spa treatments to their farm-to-table dining. Its bright, sun-soaked lobby is filled with white columns, ceiling fans, and glowing palm silhouette designs. The pool deck—a true oasis—is covered in orange-cushioned loungers, turquoise umbrellas, and a manmade sandy shore, complete with tiki bar, with even more chairs, hammocks, and umbrellas for all-day lounging. The stretch of beach designated for its guests carries through with its blue umbrella theme, along with offering a volleyball court, chaise chairs, and full food/drink service. Should you choose to work off that food/drink service, the large, full-service gym features updated

equipment, flat-screen TVs, towels, and seaporthole windows. The hotel’s restaurant, Essensia, embodies the simplicity and elegance of natural gourmet dining, and is a member of Slow Food Miami. Essensia focuses on “the pure essence of taste,” with a genuine passion for providing an opportunity to slow down and indulge in a dining experience carefully crafted for the mind, body, and soul . Essensia features worldly fare, with some ingredients sourced from the chef’s on-site garden, and presented in a vibrant and sophisticated style. With a long track record of creating exceptional green and organic dishes, the menus also include a nutritious kids menu. Finally, the hotel’s Aveda lifestyle spa, a favorite in the area, is a large, peaceful facility measuring 5,000-square feet, featuring holistic treatments, five treatment rooms, and rituals carefully created to deliver a highly personalized experience to pamper and relax, with natural and botanically-derived Aveda products. Although the Palms Hotel and Spa is just slightly north of South Beach’s hustle and bustle, its quiet and serenity seem a world away.

A Weekend in an English Country Castle By Joe Alexander Orginally built for Viscount Hambleden in 1907 by English architect Detmar Blow, Bovey Castle sits on 275 acres on the edge of the breathtaking Dartmoor countryside in England. It has long been popular with the rich and famous who wanted a traditional country house experience and all of its associated pursuits, without all of the upkeep. In 2003, debonair entrepreneur and hotelier Peter de Savary bought and refurbished the property and renamed it Bovey Castle. Rich in history and exuding English country house glamour, Bovey Castle is a scenic two-hour ride from London to Devon. This part of England has some of the most beautiful and bucolic countryside in the United Kingdom, replete with rolling hills, dales, and meandering rivers. Nearby in Dartmoor National Park are the wild and mysterious moors, where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle set his iconic Sherlock Holmes book The Hound of The Baskervilles.

The PGA Lombard Challenge

the course, making it all the more attractive to play or walk on.

To reach the gates of Bovey Castle, you drive down a winding road alongside one of the fairways of the castle’s championship 19,000-foot golf course. It was created in 1926 by J.F. Abercromby, one of last century’s most renowned designers, to rival its sister courses at Gleneagles and Turnberry. The Bovey and Bowden Rivers meander through

The castle hosted the PGA Lombard Challenge in 2013, which was won by Albert MacKenzie. Others who have played here include Gary Emerson, Simon Thornton, and PGA Euro-Pro record-breaker Christopher Hanson. If you aren’t in the mood to play 18 holes, try the 9-hole putting green that’s perched on the

terrace of the castle’s front lawn, with a view of the river, or jump in a golf cart and take a tour of the lush gardens and ponds that surround the estate. Do drive down to the driving range with a basket of balls and your clubs; it’s fun and no one’s keeping score.

Ring of Bells Inn Every morning there is a thrilling falconry

On the top floor is the Chairman’s Suite, with lead-paned windows that face the lush green of the golf course and the hills and dales that dot the horizon. This spacious and perfectly appointed suite has views to the front and the back of the castle, and a bathroom with a soaking tub with its own spectacular vista. This is also the only hotel in the world to offer a LEGO Room Service Menu, where children can choose from a selection of toys and have them delivered right to their doors. There are also myriad youth-geared activities to give younger guests a sense of life in Dartmoor. Among the pastimes offered are survival skill classes, ferret racing, apple pressing, raft building, and a visit to the Dartmoor Miniature Pony Centre

display by Martin Whitley. If it’s raining, they do the show indoors in the Great Room. Whitley will organize your own expedition if you book ahead—so the birds will be hungry enough to hunt—and then you can roam the countryside in search of rabbits and pheasants. All of the traditional country purists are offered here: Horseback riding, archery, skeet and fly-fishing—but it’s a strictly catch-and-release policy on the property’s well-stocked ponds. The scenery is the main attraction here, and walking through the woods along the stream, and climbing over a stonewall or two to the Ring of Bells Inn for fish and chips and a pint of ale makes for a pleasant afternoon. The enchanting village, with its cobblestone streets and thatched-roof cottages, where the window boxes are stuffed with geraniums, evokes the classic England you read about in books and see in the movies. In 2011, Steven Spielberg used the pastoral

After lunch, walk across the village green and visit the ancient Parish Church of St. John the Baptist and the cemetery with graves dating back to the 14th century. On the way home, you’ll walk by pastures with grazing cows and horses behind high stone fences. Take an apple or two from the pub and toss it to a grateful mare, or feed her a lump of sugar if no one’s looking.

LEGO Room Service Although the castle is large, it has a charming intimacy that reveals its roots as a private home. Off the entrance, where the antlers of various animals are displayed, are two drawings rooms, the Cathedral Room and the Adam Room, each with its own distinct décor and a welcoming fireplace where you can have tea, read the paper, or play cards. There is also a well-stocked wood-paneled bar where you can have a cocktail or a hot toddy, depending on the season. The historic ambiance of each room is evoked by its neo-Elizabethan style, with oak-paneled chambers, period portraits, antiques, gilded mirrors, and comfortable furnishings. There are 64 uniquely designed rooms in the castle and 14 three-story stone lodges on the grounds, perfect for a family or a group of friends.

Dining at Bovey Castle is as much of an experience as the rest of the estate. The breakfast buffet is a hearty delight and Head Chef Marc Hardiman serves up culinary magic with ingredients fresh from the grounds and the nearby coastline, creating seasonal menus in both The Edwardian Grill and Castle Bistro restaurants. The hotel’s expansive wine cellar offers the perfect pairings for every meal. Afternoon tea here is a quintessential English tradition. One day choose the grandeur of the wood-paneled Cathedral Room with its high ceiling and panoramic window views; next, choose a chintz-covered couch in front of the crackling fire in the cozy cream-colored Adam Room while you nibble on scones and sip your tea from delicate china cups. One reason this warm and inviting room is my personal favorite is because the castle’s friendly and colorful parrot Beaky lives here. He never fails to greet you with a brisk “Hello.” The flagship SUNDARI spa is also in the castle and offers a wide array of healing treatments, utilizing the Ayurvedic products created by Christy Turlington. At Bovey Castle you can live out your dreams of a classic English weekend in the country with all the trimmings, or bring a good book and have a proper cup of tea in an idyllic setting.

T

he summer’s mega-blockbuster movie, Jurassic World, is certain to attract tourists to Costa Rica seeking inspiration from the silver screen. Visitors need not worry about being chased by a velociraptor, however, and will feel at ease at the Cayuga Collection of luxury properties while enjoying the abundant (non-extinct) wildlife. The original movie was not filmed in Costa Rica due to environmental protection of the rainforest, although the spectacular landscape of the fictional Costa Rican island inspires travelers to create their own Jurassic adventures. “The Jurassic Park movies have long been part of the allure of Costa Rica” says Hans Pfister, Cayuga Collection Principal. “Guests can enjoy the stunning Costa Rican scenery and rest easy at our properties.” Nestled in 1,000 acres of rainforest reserve, Lapa Rios Ecolodge has naturalists on-site to provide travelers with an appreciation of the rainforest. Guests can go birding, hike to a waterfall and swim in the pools, learn about medicinal uses of the rainforest, and discover marine biology on the shore. Alternatively, journey off property for kayaking, surfing, dolphin tours, waterfall rappelling, ziplining, and horseback riding.

A short distance from Cabo Blanco National Park, the opening setting of Michael Crichton’s novel and film Jurassic Park, is Latitude 10 Beach Resort, located in Santa Teresa. Here, guests have the opportunity to see wildlife and explore the sandy beaches. While you might not see a Procompsognathus, the small scavengers that escaped to Cabo Blanco in the movie, you may catch a glimpse of sea turtles, monkeys, pelicans, and other tropical bird species as they cruise along the coast to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve. Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort, located in Manuel Antonio, offers stunning hilltop views and rainforest inhabited by howler, white-faced, and squirrel monkeys, sloths, tropical birds, and boa constrictors. Arenas Del Mar offers several guided tours of the adjacent Manual Antonio National Park, fishing, horseback riding, kayaking, surfing, whale watching, and whitewater rafting experiences. Arenas Del Mar has activities to immerse guests in the natural habitats of the region’s wildlife and rainforest while being immersed in a setting as spectacular as that in any Hollywood movie.

KEEP IT CASUAL THE HAMPTONS’ BEST BEER-AND-BURGER COMBOS By Lindsey Jaffe

N

othing quite says summer like the classic pairing of a burger and a beer. So before you get swept-up in the glitz and glam of the summer season, we’re here to make sure you don’t forget to enjoy the season’s simple pleasures.

96 • Resident August 2015

Keep it super casual and grab a burger on the beach at Navy Beach in Montauk. The Navy Burger comes with house-made bacononion marmalade, Cabot cheddar, house pickles, and hand-cut fries, and is best washed down with a cold Montauk Driftwood on draft.

Just up the road, another après-beach joint, 668 The Gig Shack, is serving up a grilled Pat La Frieda burger with fries. Pile on cheese, applewood smoked bacon, and a fried egg for a double fister, and top it off with a Narragansett Tall Boy for a taste of easy summer living.

No reservations? No problem! Head over to Indian Wells Tavern in the heart of Amagansett Village and enjoy a Tavern Burger, featuring a half-pound of Cromer’s freshly ground beef, char-grilled and served on a toasted bun with lettuce and tomato, Tavern fries, potato salad, or coleslaw. Five beers on tap and over a dozen bottled beers complete the classic pairing.

At Rowdy Hall in the center of East Hampton village, try the Rowdyburger, arguably the best burger in town. The Rowdyburger is made with certified black angus all natural beef, served on a toasted sesame seed bun with choice of cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion, along with hand-cut fries and a pickle. We suggest adding bacon and fried onions to make it extra special. Pair it with one of Rowdy’s brews, perhaps the ESR Tap—The Extra Special Rowdy Tap—which features a curated selection of premium beers from far and wide (as well as nearby) that are often produced in limited quantities; you may not find them anywhere else!

Also in East Hampton, Harbor Grill offers a burger and a beer every night at the bar for $12. The deal includes the Grill’s “classic backyard burger” with select bottled beers

And just outside the village at Fresno, a burger made with Pineland Farms all-natural beef is the talk of the town. Piled high with lettuce, tomato, and red onion, and served with pommes frites, the regulars will be the first to tell you it’s a homerun. Their large selection of bottled beer, from Brooklyn Lager to Magic Hat No. 9, ensures you won’t strike out in the beverage department either.

A little further west in Bridgehampton, grab a French bistro-style burger at Almond,

where the house burger is made with ground brisket and hangar beef and is served on Martin’s potato roll with house made “bread n butter” pickles and sliced Pike Farms beefsteak tomato. We know you’ll thank us once you taste the famous twice-cooked French fries made with Russet potatoes from local Falcowski Farm. Can’t get a reservation? It tastes just as good at the bar.

Head off the beaten path in Bridgehampton and you’ll discover Fresh Hamptons, a restaurant known for healthy takes on all types of comfort foods. Here, the pan-seared Mecox Bay grass-fed beef hamburger, with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle on a toasted brioche bun with local farmhouse cheddar or Gruyere is guaranteed to satisfy.

Craving a side of waterfront sunset views with that? Sister restaurants The Beacon and Bell & Anchor in Sag Harbor both provide stunning views, and their grilled sirloin burger with pommes frites, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and house-made dill pickles is served at both restaurants. Don’t worry—we didn’t forget those of you

summering a little further west. Little|Red’s bistro burger rounds out our list in Southampton, and is served up with pommes frites, bibb lettuce, tomato, onion, and spicy bread-and-butter pickles. Because it’s true what they say: “Life is better when you are eating a burger.”

Miami’s Masterful, Memorable RED, The Steakhouse By Harry Liddle

W

ith commitment to an outstanding dining experience and a promise of only the highest quality ingredients, it’s no surprise that Miami’s RED, The Steakhouse has garnered a reputation as one of the very best of its kind. It even feels as though the team behind RED has fostered an entirely new breed of steakhouse.

share his expertise with the clientele, and although this is a usual occurrence at RED, Vauthy knows the importance of a staff that shares this expertise. In order to accomplish this, he conducts two annual food classes (between four and five hours long) to educate his employees on every component of RED’s menus.

Serving only the top 1.5 percent of beef available worldwide, Red is no stranger to outstanding reviews. It was named one of the top 10 steakhouses in the country by Esquire, Playboy, Food & Wine Magazine, and Forbes called it one of the “15 most memorable meals of 2013.”

RED has off-the-menu items, too; try the gigantic “side” of mouthwatering Lobster Mac N Cheese, made with four cheeses, four ounces of lobster, and organic trotolle pasta, or ask about the secret Flash Fried Red Lobster (Peter will tell you the backstory).

Executive Chef Peter Vauthy is RED’s shining star. His dedication to serving nothing but the best extends past the importation of real Kobe beef from Japan. He applies a similar strategy to everything on the menu. Says Chef Vauthy, “We order and work with the best. If we don’t have what the world says is the best, we search for it until we track it down. We don’t deal with second-rate ingredients here.” It is this trusted assurance and a delectable outcome that keeps RED’s many loyal clients coming back for more. When it comes to knowledge of the menu, Chef Vauthy is more than willing to personally

Chef Alex Garcia has made Amigos Mex-ique Mexican & Barbecue a popular neighborhood hangout by filling it with his own friends, including James Beard Award nominee Aaron Sanchez (Chopped, Taco Trip), Adrien Leon, and Roberto Santibanez (author of Tacos, Tortas and Tamales), who will man the kitchen for monthly “residencies.” Highlights include the made-to-order guacamole (ranked fourth best in the US), as well as spicy dishes that straddle the line between Mexican and barbecue, like the Pulled Pork Sandwich with fries and coleslaw or the Slow Cooked Pork Carnitas with creamy tomatillo and avocado salsa with pico de gallo.

A Harlem eatery, Custom Fuel Pizza & Salads allows guests to “build your own,” with myriad pizza crusts, sauces, and locally sourced, seasonal toppings to choose from. Dietary restrictions like vegan, dairy, and/or gluten-free can all be accommodated and customized by diners from a menu of artisanal pizzas, including the Brooklyn Bridge (tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, Italian ausage, pepperoni, rosemary, cherry peppers, chili oil, prosciutto), the Prosciutto, Fig & Arugula (mozzarella, gorgonzola, fig marsala, prosciutto, olive oil, arugula) or the Riviera (olive oil, spinach, mozzarella, tomato, garlic, artichoke, kalamata olives, and goat cheese). Opened in 2010, Tamarind is part of sole proprietor Avtar Walia’s vision to launch world-class dining establishments showcasing the food from his homeland. He got his start within the restaurant industry as a bartender and captain of Tandoor restaurant before working his way up to become the co-owner of Dawat, considered to be one of the first in the trend of high-end Indian restaurants in Manhattan. Then in 2001, Walia launched the Tamarind brand—with its original location in Flatiron—which earned a Michelin star. From the restaurant’s eclectic menu, its signature dishes include different types of poultry and seafood. For example, one of the restaurant’s top dishes is the Sufiyani Machli, a marinated sea bass with hung yogurt, dill, lime zest, and a mixed peppercorn crust. For those craving a lean cut of meat, Tamarind TriBeCa serves the Malsaledar Chop, its signature lamb marinated in nutmeg, cinnamon, and aromatic Body Indian&herbs. Pole There’s also the Achari Hiran Ki Chhampen, the

The restaurant’s 11,000 square-foot space is flooded with natural light, thanks to towering 100-foot-tall windows lining the space, along with glass paneling and large, ornate lighting fixtures throughout. The restaurant can seat 175 people across two floors, with a floating cantilevered staircase taking diners from the first to the mezzanine floor, which is surrounded by intimate booths. Formerly the private dining room, the Lotus Room—named after India’s national flower— is open for lunch and tea. Each dish on the menu includes the fragrant, colorful Lotus flower. Under the direction of Managing Partner Rose Evangelista, Sotto Sopra has quickly become one of the most sought-after restaurants on the East End, known for its frequent celebrity guests, relaxing atmosphere, exceptional service, and fresh, flavorful fare. Sotto ToneSopra’s House expertly-crafted menu, created by brand new Executive Chef Fermin Jimenez,

takes advantage of the restaurant’s wood-burning oven to offer up freshly baked breads, crispy Italian-style pizza, and whole roasted fish, such as Branzino al Forno. Deliciously fresh salads include the Insalata di Formaggio di Capra e Melone (goat cheese, melon, and prosciutto salad, topped with candied pistachio); antipastos such as the Robiola Crostini (warm crostini topped with Robiola cheese, grilled figs, and spiced walnuts, drizzled with orange vinaigrette) and impeccably flavored pasta and rice dishes such as the Risotto Granchio (saffron arborio rice cooked all’onda, with crabmeat and spring onions) round out the menu, along with classic “bisteccheria” options, such as filet mignon, veal porterhouse, and lamb chops. To complement the cuisine, Sotto Sopra offers an extensive wine list, as well as a menu of delightful, refreshing cocktails, allowing patrons to relax after a day in the sun at Amagansett Beach. Signature cocktails include The Rose Orchid (Death’s Door Gin, St. Germain, prosecco, grapefruit, and

hibiscus), Sotto 75 (Farmer’s Organic Gin, St. Germain, champagne, blueberry, and lime juice) and South Fork (Jameson Irish Whiskey, mint, cucumber, lime, and orange juice). Sotto Sopra’s traditional cuisine is contrasted by its modern décor, creating a thoughtful, warm aesthetic. Drenched in sunlight, Sotto Sopra’s airy interior features an open-style design concept, cedar-paneled walls, sleek black and wood tables and chairs, industrialstyle lighting and fixtures, and bright white accents. Osteria Salina on Georgica Pond: Golden Authentic Sicilian Cuisine at New Location By Ann Grenier

A

fter three years of creating a loyal following and serving Authentic Sicilian cuisine highlighting the specialties of the Aeloian islands—namely Salina—Osteria Salina has moved from its location in Bridgehampton to Wainscott, NY. The new Osteria Salina space underwent a massive renovation under the direction of restauranteur Tim Gaglio and his family, restoring the grandeur of the space which was previously the iconic Sapore di Mare. The walls were re-painted in grey stone grey and the ceilings a reflective periwinkle blue, giving the space’s interior a warm, iridescent glow. They also brought in hand-made wrought iron wall sconces and chandeliers to ensure the inside reflects the restaurant’s

exterior, which is styled after a European manor house. The newly painted walls pair seamlessly with its idyllic views of Georgica Pond, allowing diners to watch the pond’s wildlife while enjoying Osteria’s signature Sicilian dishes, prepared by Chef and restauranteur Cinzia Gaglio. Chilled, thick-cut Kirby cucumbers seasoned with Sicilian olive oil, flake sea salt, and freshly cracked black pepper, along with the coveted agrodolce Caponatina, served atop hand-cut crostini made from the Sullivan Street Filone bread, are delivered to the table as you arrive. From there, guests can enjoy signature dishes including Fritto Misto, served with shrimp, squid, zucchini, crispy capers, and lemons in an Arrabiata sauce, the Polpette, which are Cinzia’s signature meatballs served with pecorino Siciliano in her pomodoro sauce, or the Pesce Spada alla Piastra, a swordfish served with a caponatina of eggplant, tomato, golden raisins, capers, and agrodolce. They will also be expanding the menu with items such as Busiate alla Trapanese, Spaghettini Nero di Seppia with sea urchin (Riccio di Mare), and Gamberi Con Couscous. Guests come from far and wide to enjoy Osteria Salina’s signature Panino de Gelato, which are two of Cinzia’s handmade biscotti rounds filled with gelato. They will also be offering an aperitivo hour from 4:30pm to

6pm, which will include a lighter menu along with many aperitifs. Osteria Salina boasts an A-List clientele from actors to politicians, including Mary Kate Olsen, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Liv Tyler, Christie Brinkley, Bradley Cooper, Kelly Ripa, and Keith Hernandez. With the new expanded space, host Tim Gaglio can now hold private parties in its intimate private dining room, La Saletta. In the main dining room, the space now includes a baby grand piano lounge, which will feature performances from top cabaret acts from throughout the New York area. Asia Nitollano Roxx By Isaiah Negron

P

ussy Cat Dolls star Asia Nitollano keeps dancing from one success to another. The dancer, singer, model, and NBA cheerleader has been appointed the Creative Director and resident choreographer of Sushi Roxx, the hot new Japanese restaurant, lounge, and performance space in the Tuscany Hotel, at 120 East 39th Street. From Dancing with the Stars alumna Karina Smirnoff and Glee star Max Adler, to Orange is the New Black stars Samira Wiley and Selenis Leyva, celebs have been leading the applause for Asia’s song stylings and innovative dance routines. Asia, who is now mentoring fourteen young dancers at the restaurant, dreamed of being onstage since she was a five-year-old growing up in Mt. Vernon, New York. “My dad is a musician and I used to go to the studio rehearsals and shows with him. Naturally I got into singing,” she remembers. “I also went to a Boys and Girls Club in the Bronx and they had a performing arts program. I just put myself in it and that’s when it all started for me.”

108 • Resident August 2015

Asia memorably competed in the CW’s television series The Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll, where she ended up being crowned the “Next Doll” at the show’s finale. “From the beginning, it was life or death for me. I feel like I had a different vibe than the other girls did,” she says. “For them it was fun and just experience. For me, this was going to happen. You couldn’t tell me anything else. I was going to do what I had to do to win.” Her strategy to push herself to the limits from day one caught the attention of Robin Antin, founder of the Pussycat Dolls and a judge on the show, who said that Asia won because “she was the best all-around performer.” Overnight stardom changed her life. “It was a big, big adjustment,” muses Asia. “I went from being in high school to, literally the next day, everyone asking me for my autograph; but the fans were awesome.” After a short stint as an official Pussycat Doll, Asia decided that she was going to explore the industry on her own. “It started feeling

Private School Application Essays 5 Tips To Make Yours Stand Out By Jennifer Brozost and Vimmi Shroff

W

e have read thousands of private school application essays. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve slept through many.

A good application essay should be concise, personal, and memorable. The following tips will ensure that you compose a great essay.

1. You have so much to say, you could write a book. But don’t. Please, write a book…then give it to the grandparents or save it for your memoir. The essay about your child, however, should not be longer than one page. The admissions staff reads hundreds of essays during the season. Admissions officers are interested and do want to learn more about your child; however, they want to learn more about her in one page, not five or ten. Choose four or five adjectives that describe your child. Then write your essay and support the top two or three with succinct personal anecdotes. The anecdotes should reflect your child and family in a positive light. You can be funny, silly, quirky, and honest. Just keep it real and your child’s personality will shine through.

2. Keep It personal. The essays that stand out have the most personal and interesting anecdotes about your child and your family. Watch how he interacts with others and note the unique things he does on a regular basis. Will your child’s personality add to the school environment? How? If you are not confident in your writing skills, do the best you can and then have a trusted friend (who is also an excellent writer) look it over and get her valued opinion. If it is not polished enough, go back and do it over

110 • Resident August 2015

until you are comfortable with it. This is important, so don’t rush it.

3. Do not highlight your child’s weaknesses. Weaknesses? What weaknesses? Well, yes, every child has a few. But the application essay is not the place to highlight temper tantrums, or how he hits his sibling, or every time he has told you, “You are the worst mommy ever!” Your goal is to portray a realistic and loving view of your child’s personality. Admissions staff will meet him child and be able to see his attributes for themselves, so it’s important to be honest and believable.

4. Clarify your affinity for the school. Think seriously about why you have chosen to apply to a particular school. The admissions office is seeking a great fit between the school and your family. Become familiar with each school’s educational philosophy. Is their philosophy a good fit for your family? Does the school’s mission statement reflect your family’s values? Do you seek a single sex school? Why? Are sports your main focus or do academics rule? Be honest with yourself and the admissions staff! It is important to understand why you believe that a particular school or two would be the best fit for you and your child. You must be

able to articulate this in your own words. We suggest taking mental (or written) notes while touring the school, jotting down important observations immediately after your tour and then incorporating them into your essay.

5. Additional information, please. If a school’s application offers the opportunity to provide additional information, do not reiterate what you’ve already written. There are no brownie points for filling up the entire essay portion. Only provide additional information that will help the school better understand your family and child. An application essay should be a snapshot of: • • •

Your child’s personality Your family The compatibility of your values with the school’s values

Final Notes: If you mention the school’s name in your essay, be sure it’s in the correct envelope correlating to that school. Lastly, picture an overwhelmed admissions officer reading hundreds and hundreds of essays. Yours should be that outstanding essay that remains with the reader for some time.

You might not want to admit it, but there’s a good chance your college kid will go all semester without washing sheets. The one thing you can do to rest easier is to send her off to school with an AllerEase Maximum Mattress Protector and Maximum Pillow Protector, which keep away dust mites and bed bugs, ease allergy suffering, and provide parents with peace of mind.

A Look Inside the Design of our August Cover Shoot By Pamela Jacobs

A

t the Resident, the locations we choose for our cover shoots are an integral part of the story. Through them, we aim to evoke the look and feel of both the article and the magazine itself. The space in which we shoot the photos plays an important supporting role. This month’s cover story featuring Andi Dorfman was shot on location at 210 Central Park South, in a gorgeous apartment with breathtaking, expansive views of Central Park. The airy, light-filled space proved to be the perfect match for the feel of the shoot, and was met with “oohs” and “ahhs” from everyone who entered. It was the ideal backdrop for photographing the beautiful Andi Dorman, as well as the spectacular clothes and diamonds our cover star wore (Jitrois and Theory, and Christopher Designs, respectively.) As it turns out, when the owners first purchased the apartment (actually, two apartments that they combined into one), it was quite different. “It was pretty much a gut-job,” the owner told me as I commented on the beauty of the space. It seems the

116 • Resident August 2015

interior designer had her work cut out for her. Luckily, I had the opportunity to sit down with the designer, Debbie Travin of DLT Interiors, and was fortunate to spend some time learning more about the work on this particular apartment, as well as the design process, in general. An award-winning “one-stop-shop” designer, Travin is a leader in the field of interior design, and is known for her timeless approach that’s both thoughtful and personal—always capturing the personality of the space and the people who call it home.

When you first sit down with a client, how do you get a sense of their personal style and what it is they are looking for? The first meeting I have is to discuss, in detail, what style/look they would like to achieve. I ask them to look through inspiration photos of each room, and to show me what they like about that particular room. It may be

just the color scheme, or the overall feeling of that room they like. I also ask them to tell me what they don’t like, so I know what to avoid.

Do you have a particular type of style that you personally lean toward—with regards to designing clients’ spaces—or is it completely based on them and their desires? I listen very carefully to my clients’ desires and needs and don’t go searching until I feel I know exactly what they would love. I also take into consideration their lifestyle. For example, many of my clients have children, therefore, I need to make it kid-friendly—but sophisticated at the same time. I do my very best to take their vision and transform it into their dream home.

How do the actual property and location come into play? If you’re working on an extremely modern home in a brand-new building, for instance, and the client’s taste is very retro or classical, how would

you reconcile the differences between the space and their tastes?

that would make them feel like they were in their own private oasis, away from the hectic city life outside their doors.

I try to make my clients understand it’s important to take the architecture and landscape of the space into consideration. A simple example is that you wouldn’t design a sprawling mountain home as you would a beach villa/bungalow. Both the architecture and landscape should be worked into the interior design accordingly.

One of the many attributes of this apartment are the amazing Central Park views. How big of a role did they play in the design?

Staging is all the rage in real estate these days; how important is it to the selling process? I believe it is very important. Most people cannot visualize an empty space. They need to see furnishings and accessories in order to completely visualize themselves using and enjoying the space.

What was involved in the work you did on this space [210 Central Park South]? Was there a particular feel the client wanted to achieve? This was a very large project where we combined two apartments together and completely reconfigured the floor plan, making it a complete gut. It was great to have a clean slate to do exactly what my clients wanted, which was to create a soft, serene—as well as sophisticated—interior

The views played a major role, because it was the only reason they actually bought the apartment. It sure wasn’t the interior! We designed the kitchen to be in the center of the apartment, with it open to the views. All the windows were changed to be floor-toceiling windows, which made a huge impact to enjoy the views. Also, when you enter the apartment, the first thing you see is the incredible views of the park.

Is there a specific trend you’re seeing in a lot of in NY interiors right now? I think people are going away from the super sleek, cold modern look. I’m finding my clients are asking for their interiors to feel clean and fresh, but at the same time warm, welcoming, and comfortable—which makes perfect sense, considering it is your home, not a showroom.

The Sterling Mason: Tribeca’s Hottest New Address By Harry Liddle

124 • Resident August 2015

N

estled in a private enclave within downtown’s most coveted landmark district, The Sterling Mason is described as a modern reflection of historic Tribeca. With 33 distinctive residences, this architecturally noteworthy condominium offers a “full-service and very private” residential experience that “appeals to a remarkably diverse group of buyers,” says Susan de Franca, President and CEO of Douglas Elliman Development Marketing. In an innovative collaboration of architecture, design, and craft, noted architect Morris Adjmi was able to transform a quintessential 1905 masonry loft warehouse by adding to it a stunning identical twin, clad in contemporary metallic facade. The generously scaled homes by interior design firm Automatic Studios combine the flexibility of open-plan loft living with the sophistication of classic pre-war residences. As a new space in 2014, The Sterling Mason had quite an impressive start. Generating sales activity that “far surpassed expectations,” according to Charles Bendit, co-CEO of Taconic Investment Partners, they “achieved $87.5 million in sales in the three months of summer alone.” A year later, just three available residences remain, including Penthouse C, a “stunning duplex offering four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and two powder rooms, a 40-foot-long gallery-like living/dining room, and a 1,065-square-foot terrace with east views and elegant landscape design by Deborah Nevins.” It is the last of the three penthouses and is currently listed at $24.5 million. Also available are residences 3C and 4C, each with five bedrooms, five bathrooms, and 3,708 interior square-feet. Both are listed at just below $10 million. Each residence is dressed with the finest finishes and appointments, including American oak flooring, custom hardware by Hamilton Sinkler, and operable metal shutters for French doors overlooking the courtyard. Grand kitchens designed by GACHOT have walnut cabinetry and millwork by distinguished American cabinet-maker Henrybuilt. Master bedrooms showcase Bianco Dolomiti marble slab walls and tile flooring in a delicate handlaid herringbone pattern, custom white oak vanities by Henrybuilt, and special edition

free-standing soaking tubs and separate stall showers, both with fixtures by Lefroy Brooks. Homeowners enjoy a wide variety of amenity spaces, including a fully-equipped fitness center and a relaxing library club room, along with bicycle storage, private parking spaces, and storage units (both available for purchase).
