e’ve made it another month and so happy to present our February edition. If I may say, one of our better efforts! From fashion, dining, and profiles of New York moguls and personalities – we’ve got everything a New Yorker needs to know. We are extremely proud to present Jonathan Tisch on the cover. The scion of the famed family, he runs the Lowes Corporation. We were the first publication to shoot the in the renovated Lowes Regency, a gem of a hotel on 61st and Park. We thank him for a most interesting interview and think you will be please with the photos we chose! We also feature the sexy and spicy Biaca del Rio. About to appear on Logo’s hit show, RuPaul’s Drag Race, she has and continues to make a splash in the New York drag world. She put her best on for us and we think you’ll find the interview hysterically funny.

Another great addition we’d like to point out is our new contributor, Dr. Neil Saddick. Both he and his team will be telling us how to get and maintain perfect skin and how to keep a healthy lifestyle in our busy city. I hope you notice the increase in fashion pages. This is an effort to bring what’s best of New York to you. From new advertisers and chic content, expect this section to grow and to beautify the book.

RESIDENT ALIEN T

he only succor getting GW through this most harsh and daunting of early New York City winters I have ever experienced in my more than 24 years here as the Resident Alien -- my only succor has been fine food. And so this month I have decided to devote all my thoughts on some of GW’s favorite of his very favorite restaurants and salons, some new, some not so new.

late night out at the fabulous OUT hotel just down the street, which is now under the creative direction of social impresario extraordinaire Sue J Buckley. The 37 year old hunk Sotir will be the first to tell you. I worked in nightclubs for 14 years, and I finally have this little place for you to come and hang out, a little place I can call my own. I want this place to be my own little neighborhood artist colony. And I have no doubt it will.

One of my favorite new haunts even though it is all the way at 403 W. 43rd Street, is Bea. I had a piscine of fine cuvee - though everyone raves about the bourbon concoction, The Boulevardier, or sample the small plates of the delicious grilled shrimp toast and the house signature spinach tagliatelle pasta, and most of all say hello to the cute, charismatic proprietor, Sotir Zonea. I first met the adorable Sotir years ago when he was a bartender at the Boom Boom Room, so I was especially happy and proud to see the Washington Heights boy of Romanian heritage save his pennies after years of hard work and open his own little bistro in the Theater District. Now how more fantastic an-only-in-NewYork moment is that?! So yes-- GW is insisting to his devoted- make the trek to Bea at 403 W 43rd Street (212 602-1910) before say a

Bea’s Bitter Duchess

In the weeks since it has been opened it has already become the after hang out spot for many a Broadway star and legend. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I looked up the Monday night I happened to stop by only to see the fabulous icon Chita Rivera strolling through the door for a nightcap with her coven of theater queens. “You know my Grandmother was the one who raised me and I just look at this little bar/restaurant as my homage to her. I have wanted to open a restaurant since I was seventeen.” We could not be more proud. And by the way, are you looking for a

George Wayne, Evert Gilo husband? Call me! Yet another fabulous and worth the trek discovery for GW is my dear long-time many years and counting buddies Stratis Morfogen and I am sure you have by now heard about the tasty comfort food of his new restaurant Cucina Ciano at 181 East 78th Street. The sexy Greek whom GW has long referred to as “The Original Mr. Big” is known of course for creating Phillipe, his hugely successful Mr. Chow knock-off which he took to global success and now of late shifted his focus to doing the same for his Cucina Ciano brand. This particular effort way up there in the nosebleed district of East 78th Street, but he has wooed the savvy of the noted impresario Unik Earnest as business partner here and they have been feeding the A-list types like Patti Labelle, Ron Perleman and Tyson Chandler. Ron Perleman must spend his nights at a different Upper East Side restaurant every night of the week, for there he was again the last time yours truly settled in to his favorite of favorites, Nello Balans legendary restaurant, Nellos. I must have a thing for Romanians, because Nello like Sortir is of course of famous Romanian heritage -- but Nello is King -- as far as GW is concerned. Nothing can match the magical New York City dining experience of a late Saturday lunch on a picture perfect autumn evening a-la-carte at Nello’s. Between eyeballing not only Perleman, but also Rupert Murdoch and Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Scwarzenegger -- all at separate tables that evening I was there. That is almost as dizzying as eyeballing the extraordinarily vast menu, which famously features more than 27 First Course choices alone. At this time of year, a visit to Nello’s always starts with its soothingly

delightful lobster bisque to warm the rotgut of this ink-stained wretch. And if the $44 sticker for a sliver of delicious Ahi Tonno Tartare doesn›t shock you, then by all means go ahead and scarf down that appetizer too. Arnold, of course, was sure to order The Arnold for his main course, which as you would expect is the Tagliolini With Truffles named after him. But GW, as he is wont, went with his usual Nello›s favorite - the Nero Di Seppia of delicious black ink taglioni with shrimp and squid. Knowing that two of my favorite new restaurants of the season are a five minute walk from my door step makes GW feel blessed, especially in this freezing weather. Omar Hernandez and his already eponymous boite, Omar’s at 21 West 9th Street will undoubtedly be one of the hot spots during Fashion Week this season. Omar’s, for sure, will be a nexus to the bon chic and the mega fabulous faces for the Feb 2014 New York Fashion Week, and so too will the iconic impresario Andre Balazs and his fabulous new restaurant Narcissa on the ground level of his now fully re-imagined Standard East Village hotel at 25 Copper Square. It’s definitely going to be a face-off between Omar’s and Narcissa as the place to dine to see and be seen during the upcoming fashion week. Both enjoy and regale the sort of man who can afford a pair of $12,000 Cartier diamond cuff links and doesn›t mind showing them off from a prime table at either place. At Omar’s, a dapper man about town such as Lappo Elkan would have his date no doubt swooning over the Omar specialty White

Being the earnest gadabout, you should not at all be surprised to learn that GW was there on opening night, the very first tasting of Andre Balazs’ take on the farm to table concept a restaurant he named after one the cows on his vast estate in the Hudson Valley called Locust On The Hudson, which in fact is where 89 percent of the produce to create the delightful menu of Chef John Fraser is grown and reared. I don›t know if Andre Balazs used that notion to stoke some irony, because the most delicious and humungous piece of Bone-In Prime Ribeye that I have slobbered over with delight, in seasons, is the must-order on the menu at Narcissa. And just think the $44 that you pay for a bowl of lobster bisque at Nello, you can pay two dollars more and get the biggest hunk of mouthwatering prime rib steak down in the East Village at Narcissa. The first Friends And Family Dinner at Narcissa drew the likes of David Bryne, Juliane Margulies, Richard & Cessa Johnson, Helen & Tim Schifter, Anh Duong and Jack Pierson and the fabulous heiress Pippa Cohen. The following night as GW settled in by the bar, Brooke Shields was holding court with Andrew Saffir and his husband Daniel Benedict while across the room sat Jon Bon Jovi and his crew and over there the fabulous stylist June Ambrose and decorator to the stars Jeffrey Bilhuber oh and certainly not to forget the divine Fern Mallis and the legendary fashion designer Jeffrey Banks. Yes my dear, it is that kind of crowd. And I will be in touch.

POSITIVELY ERNIE

I

By Ernie Anastos

believe in positive thinking and more positive news! As someone who has been anchoring the news in New York for many years, I am often faced with the challenge of reporting sensitive information. We know that bad news can influence people’s lives and attitude and that’s why I look to find some positive stories to report. As anchor of the FOX 5 News at 5pm and a daily commentator on the New 710 WOR radio, I’m hoping these uplifting stories can make a difference in how we think and feel. It’s also great to meet people who are enthusiastic about encouraging positive ideas and experiences that can help change lives, our communities – and even the world.

What He Did For Love Did you happen to recently watch the fabulous TV special on the extraordinary life of Marvin Hamlisch? What a sterling tribute to a true New Yorker once described as “a composer, conductor, genius and a mensch.” That was Marvin Hamlisch. He achieved all this greatness, Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, Tonys, Golden Globe Awards – and never lost his love for family, friends and people. Marvin was my friend. We enjoyed co-hosting the Easter Seals Charity telethons in New York. What a guy! It was something to see him reach deep into his heart to help others. Marvin was the genuine article and everybody knew it, so generous with his time and talent. During the PBS Dori Bernstein produced special, “What He Did for Love,” there were many stories about Marvin’s astounding acts of kindness. His lovely wife Terre received countless letters about his good deeds, like finding doctors for people, paying hospital bills, sending flowers and singing at nursing homes to brighten people’s lives.

Super star Oprah Winfrey shares her passion for life. “There is no greater gift you can give or receive than to honor your calling. It’s why you were born and how you become most truly alive.”

Terre also recalled how Marvin would often talk about how lucky he was to be doing what he loved. “Whatever happens,” he said, “find your passion and what you love and have the self-confidence to do it.”

Stay in touch! This regular series in Resident Magazine is the latest feature in my effort to inspire more uplifting news stories. You can also watch the 5 o’clock news on FOX 5 and listen to the New 710 WOR radio for more of my positive stories. If you want to be part of this growing initiative, please send your thoughts to ernie.anastos@foxtv.com. Together we really can make a difference. Stay tuned, and stay positive.

Do You Speak Your Valentine’s Love Language? By Rhonda Huff, M.Ed, BS Fitness/Wellness, IIN, AADP Holistic Health Coach

E

veryone can agree that communication in a relationship is essential to its survival. But what if you are speaking two completely different languages? You may speak fluent “love” in your own language and yet it can be completely foreign to your partner.

You need all of these in varying amounts but the ones that fall the lowest on your love scale may indicate a much smaller emotional impact on you. It is also possible to have two that appear to compete for the highest rank on your love scale, although one will usually prevail as the most important.

Trade cards and as you discuss fun, practical, and even sexy ways to speak your partner’s love language, write them on the back of the hearts so you can keep them for future reference.

2) Quality time: the undivided attention of their partner - undivided is the key word

5) Physical touch: having sex, holding hands, kissing, or just sitting close to each other

t Resident February 2014

Make 10 hearts, using 5 different colors of paper.

Each person gets a set of the 5 hearts and ranks them by placing the number of importance on the card - with 1 being the most important and 5 being the least important.

1) Words of affirmation: compliments or words of encouragement

4) Acts of service: setting the table, walking the dog, helping with chores or doing other small jobs - without having to ask is most desired

Here is a fun way to discuss this:

On each heart, write one Love Language and the definition above. On the back write, “I feel loved when…”

When Gary Chapman, the director of Marriage & Family Life Consultants in Winston-Salem, N.C., read through more than 10 years of notes, he realized that what couples really wanted from each other fell into five distinct categories:

3) Receiving gifts: symbols of love, like flowers, chocolates, or handwritten notes – the gift doesn’t always need a monetary value

your partner’s love language is as simple as asking them.

The problem is that often times opposites attract. If you feel loved when someone speaks words of encouragement to you then you will naturally speak words of encouragement to show love to others, including your partner. But if your partner’s love language happens to be acts of service, then your words will be completely meaningless without an action to back them up. Speaking each other’s love language is a super easy way to keep love alive! And to figure out

If you aren’t sure what your love language is, 5lovelanguages.com provides a 30-question test that can help you figure it out. •

Blessings for a love-filled Valentines Day,

Pediatric Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center has the expertise to perform the most complicated minimally invasive pediatric procedures from newborns to adolescents.

The shift from open to laparoscopic surgery was slower to begin in pediatrics than in adult surgery, in large part because the first laparoscopic instruments were developed for adults, and child-sized devices were simply not available. That gap closed quickly, and newly trained pediatric surgeons began viewing laparoscopic and minimal access surgery as the preferred standard. NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center’s pediatric surgery practice have the expertise to perform the most complicated procedures in even the smallest of infants, affording them the advantages of medical technology and surgical expertise. Our goal is to do more for our patients while doing less to them. Jerusalem Chic

For thousands of years the holy sites of Jerusalem have drawn millions of pilgrims and visitors from around the globe. Now, a wave of stylish restaurants, wine bars, on-trend boutiques, art galleries and lively nightlife is attracting the fashionable and fabulous to this wondrous and exotic city, adding chic new appeal to an age-old destination. MEETING PAULA ABDUL It’s not surprising that I ran into personable pop star Paula Abdul in a snazzy Jerusalem eatery. “I’m so happy, I’ve dreamt of coming here all my life,” she beamed. She was about to be bat mitzvahed in Jerusalem, a long held wish. Following the ceremony and jubilation, Ms. Abdul visited the city’s ancient sites then journeyed to the Dead Sea, Tel Aviv and the other amazing destinations the country offers visitors. THINGS TO DO My first morning in Jerusalem I toured the mystical Old City and its Gates, and the Jewish, Christian, Armenian and Arab quarters. I marveled at the Cardo with its archeological

remains, the striking Dome of the Rock, The Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the famed Western Wall where I left a note. At night the city was swinging with lively outdoor cafes, upscale bars and cool restaurants like Zuni, Cavalier and Chakra where I happened upon Paula Abdul and savored a delectable dinner of tasty mezzes, the freshest fish and excellent Israeli wine. Yes, I happily found many superb red and whites that are produced in Israel.

The following day I headed to the newly inaugurated Israel Museum, which houses the awesome Dead Sea Scrolls as well as Picassos, Kadinskys, Van Goghs and Warhols. Then some indulgent retail therapy at the new fashionable outdoor Mamilla Mall, with boutiques by Israel’s star designer Ronen Chen and others. Early evening I zipped over to the elegant American Colony Hotel’s atmospheric cellar bar where journalists and glitterati cocktail. After quite some time my friends separated me from my beloved martini and we headed to our next stop, the glamorous roof top lounge of the chic new Mamilla Hotel for spectacular views of this most breathtaking city. STAY King David Jerusalem: Located in the heart of Jerusalem, this legendary 5 star hotel frequented by world leaders and celebrities (including Paula Abdul) strikes the perfect balance of elegant luxury and old world glamour. Posh, sumptuously decorated suites with terraces offer glorious views of the old city. This grand hotel boasts a stunning lobby, lovely gardens, swimming pools and La Regence Restaurant. danhotels.com

Sun worshippers will love the sandy beaches and blue Mediterranean of Tel Aviv’s coastline. After sunbathing and a dip in the sea, cocktailing or dining in one of the many seaside cafÊs with music is the perfect way to view the golden sunset. Top it off with a lovely stroll along the beachfront promenade.

Tel Aviv

Akiva Weiss, recognized as the founding father of Tel Aviv, had a vision that it would one day become Israel’s New York City. This booming economic, artistic and cultural center is proof positive that his prophecy has come to pass. Driving along its Mediterranean coastline with palm trees, bustling cafes and luxury hotels fronting white sandy beaches, I saw soaring buildings that were not there when I visited two years ago, and new ones being built. Tel Aviv’s star is definitely on the rise. THINGS TO DO This vibrant city attracts the young, attractive international set. Eminently walkable, I strolled the tree-lined promenade of posh Rothschild #PVMFWBSE MJLF /FX :PSL T UI "WFOVF UBLJOH in the stunning architecture and swank cafes where the glamorous gather after dusk. Then off to the so-called White City district with its striking, newly renovated Bauhaus buildings – a designated World Heritage Site. Nearby is picturesque, refashioned Neve Tzedek, evoking Tribeca, where people socialize in coffee houses by day and party at cool bars and dance venues by night. Suzanne Dellal Centre’s beautiful courtyard and lively Shabazi Street are not to be missed. Chic boutiques, colorful galleries and stylish restaurants are flocking to this ‘in’ neighborhood. The ancient port of Jaffa with its reconstructed old city enchants with quaint shops on winding cobblestoned streets and alleyways named after zodiac signs and the must see Ilana Goor Musem. SPA AT THE DEAD SEA A short drive from Jerusalem or Tel Aviv takes you to the lowest point on earth. The Dead Sea, 1300 feet below sea level and renowned for its healing properties, may be the ultimate spa. With its extreme salinity you can actually sit on the water and read a magazine. People clad in skimpy bathing suits slather themselves with potent clay-like mud from head to toe. They stand like statues on the beach as the sun bakes the mineralized crust into their skin before they rinse off in the Sea. Spa hotels offering treatments and all varieties of Dead Sea products abound near these healing waters. Post Sea, I actually felt better and my skin became soft and silky. Additionally, it was a hoot. goisrael.com

f you’re serious about getting away from it all, a vacation spent under water should do the trick. More specifically, try diving in Curacao among yellowfish, sea turtles and sting rays. Anyone can do it (as long as you’re cool with a little bit of studying, training and braving the open waters for a few days). Getting certified to scuba dive is easier than you think. In fact, once you’ve fallen in love with it, the toughest part is getting out of the water. As for me, I’ve always thought snorkeling was fascinating, but I was really ready to explore a bit further down.

First, my sister and I found a reputable dive operator, Go West Diving (www. gowestdiving.com), at The Kura Hulanda Lodge & Beach Club (kurahulanda.com). It’s a luxe beachfront getaway located on the western end of the island and super close to loads of killer dive spots. Then, we hopped on a quick flight to Curacao, a small island off the coast of Venezuela. The evening we arrived, we looked out onto the water (the resort is perched on rugged cliffs overlooking quite a dreamy view of the Caribbean) and imagined what we’d see the next day. After all, Curacao is known worldwide for its marine life and unique dive locales.

To maximize your water time, consider going online first to take PADI’s eLearning course. It is 12 hours worth of slides on nitrogen, water pressure, buoyancy and the like, so it’s ideal to get that out of the way. Once you see the inviting turquoise water, that’s where you’ll want to be. Not sitting inside cramming for your tests. My sister and I made the mistake of not doing the online course ahead of time. But we managed to get that done and all the open-water training in three days. Day once consisted of classwork and then two dives where we practiced things like removing our masks underwater (not fun). Basically, we shut our eyes, removed our masks, held it out in front of us, put the masks back on and purged the water by blowing out of our noses. All this while not

freaking out. Soon after, though, we spotted a school of silvery fish passing by, and any qualms I had washed away instantly. And I remembered my reasoning for doing this in the first place: to see the other 70 percent of the world, you know, the part that is covered in water. It would be well worth it. Even if we got stung by fire coral along the way (which we did). Come lunchtime, by sister and I studied a bit at the hotel’s beachside restaurant while munching on the catch of the day. Then it was back in the water again. We practiced more skills like equalizing our ears as we went lower into the water. We practiced sharing air with each other and how to recover our regulators if they got knocked out of our mouths. The backdrop throughout the dive involved purple oven pipe sponges, brain coral, sea slugs, parrotfish and Christmas tree worms.

On our last dive, at Watamula, I truly felt like a diver. As the juvenile drumfish, yellow coronet fish and blue tang gracefully fluttered by, I relaxed. I was certified now. I’d be doing this for the rest of my life.

At the end of the day, being able to relax at the resort during our down time was such a bonus. After we had our fill at the open-air breakfast buffet we headed out for a morning dive and afternoon dive at a spot called Alice in Wonderland. And, after seeing a large spotted eagle ray overhead, I sure felt like the tiny version of Alice. After seeing black and white trunk fish, moray eels and scorpionfish, though, I was back to feeling my normal size.

Set in the middle of a rainforest, Coba dates back to the classical period. Home to the highest temple on the Yucatan Peninsula, you can walk or ride on the same Mayan roads traveled 1000 years ago or climb the steep incline of the temple Nonoch-Mul. The Mayan culture can also be explored by water. Historically, the Mayan people believed the cenotes, which are naturally occurring sinkholes, were portals to the underworld and a way to communicate with the gods. True to legend, the cenotes, today provide access to the vast underground rivers of Riviera Maya for the adrenaline fueled cave-diving adventurers.

Sitting at the edge of these elegant and massive mansions along the Cliff Walk is the luxurious boutique Hotel Chanler. Sporting the similar Old world European Beaux Arts architecture of the area, The Chanler boasts the best ocean views in Newport at the start of the famous Cliff Walk that meanders cliffside amongst the landmarked mansions. Perfect for a romantic getaway, each of the 20 oversized rooms has a different historical theme that has been lovingly curated by its owner to offer a different experience on each visit. Styles range from the dark wood paneled English Tudor room that gives the feeling of living during the Renaissance period, to the Medieval Gothic room, both of which are perfect for cozy Winter nights. For those who prefer a lighter decor opt for the French period Louis XVI signature room that’s straight out of Versailles, or a classic New England style room decorated in the Williamsburg, Federal or Greek Revival period. Unplugged

TRAVEL

Traveling the routes of ancient explorers— like Drake, Darwin, Magellan, Fitz-Roy and Shackleton—I’d witness splendid scenery, hike, read and rest. Mountains, stars, penguins and sea lions would be my companions. Leaving behind technology was easy: I wasn’t traveling to connect with others, but rather to disconnect. By unplugging from computers and cell phones and plugging into nature, I would recharge my inner battery.

and since the plane is built to adjust for turbulence and reduce all engine noise, I got a good night’s sleep—preparing me for the adventures ahead in Patagonia.

So it was only fitting that when I began my unplugged adventure, I left on a “Dreamliner.”

HOLA, SOUTH AMERICA Patagonia is a region covering about 260,000-square miles in South America and includes land in both Argentina and Chile. With broad plateaus rising from about 300 feet near the ocean to 5,000 feet in the Andean foothills, Patagonia is known for its strong, blustery winds and cool weather. Much of the region is mountainous and frozen because of its proximity to Antarctica, but it is also home to deep forests and verdant valleys.

DREAM TRIP On the overnight flight on a Lan Airlines’ Boeing 787 Dreamliner from New York’s JFK to Santiago, Chile, the Dreamliner lived up to its name. The craft was large and comfortable,

I didn’t know much about Patagonia before this trip, so I booked everything through Borello Travel & Tours in New York. They suggested a seamless itinerary that aligned perfectly with my travel-unplugged plan. NOT THAT KIND OF CRUISE Although I’ve traveled extensively, I had never been on a cruise. I just don’t see myself as the “party on

the Lido deck” type. I’d hate being stuck on a ship with a thousand tourists bellying up to a buffet. So when Sandra Borello of Borello Travel & Tours assured me that this was “not that kind of cruise,” I was relieved. The M/V Stella Australis, one of two small Cruises Australis ships, sleeps only 210 passengers and doesn’t resemble the “Love Boat” in any way. (Australis is the Latin word for “south”). We were sailing at the end of the low South American winter season, so there were only 75 passengers and almost as many crew on board—a small group of interesting, well-educated international travelers of all ages. The ship had five levels, 100 cabins, and a large restaurant with white-tablecloths, attentive waiters and lots of windows. It also featured several quiet viewing lounges, a topdeck observation bar and lounge and spacious cabins with private baths and large windows. In my fifth deck cabin, the windows span from floor to ceiling. We had no Internet while at sea, but I never missed it. During our journey, passengers enjoyed informative educational discussions and films about the region and its wildlife, along with excursions to see nature up close.

DIRE STRAITS Our ship made its way at a calm, leisurely pace through the Strait of Magellan, which cuts a twisting natural path between the Atlantic and the Pacific, north of Tierra del Fuego with islands, icebergs and snow-capped mountains on every side. The Strait is about 310 miles long and 1.2-miles wide at its narrowest point. Most of the time, our ship sailed in view of land on both sides, which meant the waters were calm. During our cruise from Punta Arenas, Chile, to the Argentinean town of Ushuaia in

Tierra del Fuego, we passed Ainsworth Bay and Tuckers Islets, Pia Glacier, Murray Channel and Nassau Bay, and finally, on our last day, Wulaia Bay and Cape Horn. Along the way we encountered every kind of weather from warm sunshine to white blizzards—sometimes all on the same day. SAFE PASSAGE As we entered the open sea near Cape Horn on the third night of our voyage, the seas tossed our ship about a bit, and I rocked in my bed to the rolling waves. Still, I never felt seasick. The waters surrounding the Cape can be treacherous, due to severe storms that can arise with little notice, giant waves and strong currents, formidable icebergs and ferocious winds. Ancient seamen have called it a “sailors’ graveyard,” but we were not sailing around Cape Horn Island—merely stopping along the north side of it. Rounding Cape Horn to the south is the dangerous route, and we weren’t going there. Our Captain assured us he would never attempt to go to Cape Horn Island if conditions were not perfect. JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE EARTH Conditions were excellent the morning we anchored near Cape Horn Island, and it was sunny and windy as we boarded the Zodiac boats on cold choppy seas. In minutes, we were climbing the wooden stairway along a rocky cliff and stepping foot on the island, the

southernmost headland of Tierra del Fuego. The tiny wind-whipped island has a wooden steps and a boardwalk leading up a steep hill to a lighthouse, chapel and an enormous monument honoring ancient sailors. This was our most strenuous climb—thanks in part to the winds that nearly blew me off my feet. But it was also the most thrilling moment of the trip—to stand there at land’s end, staring at the inimitable majesty of the sea. Ferdinand Magellan, who had first navigated these waters in the 1500s, writes: “The sea is dangerous and its storms terrible, but these obstacles have never been sufficient reason to remain ashore.” I agree. I was glad that I’d left my comfort zone and my computer behind—not content to remain ashore, but eager to brave the seas and stand in the footsteps of truly intrepid travelers— explorers who centuries ago stood on this spot. I thought of the words of explorer Ernest Shackleton, alluding to the poem, “Call of The Wild”: “We had pierced the veneer of outside things…We had seen God in His splendors, heard the text that Nature renders. We had reached the naked soul of man.” Thanks to Borello Travel for putting an amazing trip together. RIDING THE ZODIAC Cruises with Australis are expedition cruises, which means that twice-daily Zodiac inflatable boats, powered by big outboard motors, take passengers to trek uninhabited islands and gleaming glaciers. There we saw penguins, sea lions and myriad birds. We enjoyed soft and medium-level adventure hikes through flowerfilled hillsides and permafrost paths. Even older travelers found the Zodiac boat trips and hikes manageable, though some chose to stay on board and enjoy the scenery from the windows of the lounges or their rooms. When I first saw photos of Zodiac boats in the brochures, I’d worried that I’d be afraid to ride the boats on the icy waters. But after our first Zodiac outing, I felt safe and comfortable in the raft-like crafts.

Beautiful Buenos Aires

By Christopher A. Pape

I

f you’re going to take a Cruceros Australis trip to Cape Horn, you’ll either begin or end the cruise in Argentina. While there, don’t miss your chance to see South America’s largest and most cosmopolitan city—Buenos Aires, Argentina’s capital city, a place that reflects a rich and widely diverse European heritage. A thoroughly cosmopolitan metropolis, Buenos Aires is situated on the southeastern coast of South America, edged by the Rio de Plata, or River of Silver—a name befitting the sparkling waters standing beside the world’s classiest cities. One of the 20 largest capital cities in the world, Buenos Aires is often ranked as one of the most attractive international cities, which is why some travelers call it the “Paris of South America” for its dramatic architecture and rich cultural attractions. Many people claim it looks like Barcelona—others say is reminiscent of Mexico City, and others say it has something so Italian about it, too, perhaps because of the obvious influence of its many Italian immigrants. Whatever you see or do in Buenos Aires, you’re bound to love it—for the city welcomes more visitors each year than any other in South American, including Rio de Janeiro, and is a top vacation destination. Locals, called “Porteños,” or “People of the Port,” often consider themselves more European than South American, and many speak Spanish, English and Italian, and they welcome Englishspeaking visitors. While you’re there, be sure to seek out the things for which Buenos Aires and Argentina are best known—such as the music and culture of Tango, the way of life of the traditional Argentinean “gauchos,” and the glorious art, architecture, cafés, shops, parks, fountains, and natural wonders. Search for the soul of Buenos Aires, and you’re sure to find it dancing the Tango in the streets.

Best of Buenos Aires: Tango Porteño

Monserrat

A tango lesson, dinner and a show at Tango Porteño is a must when visiting the cradle of Tango, Buenos Aires. Tango Porteño re-enacts the sexy and glorious golden age of Tango, the 1940s, in a venue that once housed a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cinema. The Tango show held here each night could rival any Broadway revue, featuring Tango dancers, singers, and a world-class orchestra.

This central business district neighborhood, or barrio, located in the east side of Buenos Aires, is home to some of the most important most beautiful buildings in Buenos Aires, including its city hall, city legislature building, the Teatro Avenida, the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires and the Ministry of Defense’s Libertador building, among others. Perhaps the most famous of these is the enormous Casa Rosada, home to the Argentinean government’s executive branch, made famous for the balcony from which Eva Perón or “Evita” rallied working class crowds below in the Plaza de Mayo. Today the building is home to the Presidential Museum of Buenos

tangoporteno.com.ar

Barrio La Boca This popular south-east-side neighborhood, which rests at the edge of Buenos Aires’ old port, retains a strong European, and more specifically Italian, flavor, with many of its early settlers being from the Italian city of Genoa. Resting at the mouth, or “boca” in Spanish, of the Riachuelo or Matanza River, the neighborhood is popular with tourists for its colorful houses and its famous pedestrian street, the Caminito, where tango artists perform in outdoor cafes. With its share of souvenir shops, it may seem a bit too touristy for some. However, it’s a pleasant place to enjoy an espresso in an outdoor café and enjoy music and Tango.

Eva Perón’s Final Resting Place in La Recoleta Cemetery The BBC calls the Recoleta Cemetery one of “the world’s best cemeteries”—and certainly its large marble monuments and aboveground tombs are impressive. Of all the ostentatious tombs here, Evita’s is fairly unassuming. The former First Lady of Argentina is buried in the Duarte family crypt, which stands sandwiched between more impressive mausoleums. Follow the crowds to this spot where a small plaque is the only indication that the “spiritual leader of Argentina” rests there. Hum a few bars of “Don’t cry for me, Argentina,” and move on to see some of the more ornate mausoleums there.

Estancia la Bamba To learn first-hand about the Argentinean “gaucho” (cowboy) traditions of farming, ranching, equestrian activities, silver-making, barbecuing and singing, you’ll want to get out of Dodge—that is, outside Buenos Aires. Just a two-hour drive through the countryside, enjoy the romantic tradition of a real Argentinean horse ranch and enjoy a serene getaway stay at Estancia la Bamba, a historic fivestar resort property where guests can watch a Polo match, dine on Argentinean barbecue, learn about the gaucho way of life, explore the lush grounds on horseback or by horse-drawn carriage, lounge by the pool and even meet a real-life “horse whisperer.” For an afternoon, weekend, or longer—La Bamba is Argentina at its best. la-bamba.com.ar

Café Tortoni UCityGuides named this one of the 10 most beautiful cafes in the world. An elegant Buenos Aires coffeehouse set in the Monserrat neighborhood, Café Tortoni was established in 1858 by a French immigrant and is said to have been inspired by Fin de siècle or “turn of the Century” coffee houses of Paris. Today it features a full bar, tapas menu, and of course fine coffees. cafetortoni.com.ar

The Goring Hotel S

itting practically in Buckingham Palace’s backyard, The Goring Hotel has been in the same family for more than a century and has welcomed royal guests ever since it first opened its doors. The coronations of George VI and the present queen brought guests of foreign royalty to The Goring, and when Kate Middleton spent the night before her Westminster Abby nuptials, she and her mother and sister shared the hotel’s Royal Suite and booked the entire hotel for family and friends. When heads of state, presidents, celebrities and royalty come to London, many stay here, and on occasion, the Queen comes for tea. Last month, during Fashion Week madness, fashion royalty (designers and celebrities) stayed here, too.

Restaurant Roundup By Hillary Latos

F

rom Brooklyn favorites to Lower East Side gems, the New York culinary scene has been abuzz with new restaurant openings and old favorites to satisfy savvy gourmands. We are sure that there is something here for everyone - from the delightfully Roman-inspired oyster bar, Virgola to the sinfully delicious Nino’s, we have highlighted noteworthy openings and neighborhood favorites to get you through the long winter season. Use this as your guide and you won’t be disappointed.

Virgola Imagine a midnight tryst with oysters and Italian prosecco in a dark alley way lit with the dim flickering of candlelight. The incredibly mysterious and romantic setting seems like the backdrop for a perfume ad, but it’s actually Greenwich Village’s latest oyster and wine bar, Virgola. Only 8 feet wide, this tiny space is in a former alleyway with exposed brick walls lit by candles, seating for about 15, and decorated with the European tradition of love locks, where paramours who possess the only 2 keys have left their mark with a padlock. Serving some of the freshest oysters in town, the menu is predominantly cold food and tightly edited to include a raw bar seafood tower, tuna tartare, crudo, caviar, ceviche, salad, charcuterie platters with cheese, and for dessert the simple yet satisfying Nutella toast. Beautifully presented, this is proof that sometimes the best things in life come in small packages.

Nino’s For over 30 years Nino has been serving some of Gotham’s biggest luminaries in politics, media, finance, sports, and the entertainment worlds as evidenced in his personalized Where’s Waldo-esque mural that asks, how many times can you see Nino? The answer is 14, and he can be seen serving and greeting names like Trump, Pataki, the Clintons, Jeter, Barbara Walters, Cindy Crawford, as well as being serenaded by Stevie Wonder. If you happen to catch the charismatic owner he will recount stories about every one of his famous and loyal patrons. Serving some of the best fine Italian food in the city, it’s no wonder that the people who can afford to eat anywhere in the city choose Ninos. Personal favorites are the 4.5 pound lobster fra diavolo pasta, Zuppa di Vongole (clams) simmered in a garlicky tomato & sausage broth, filet mignon carpaccio, Caesar Salad prepared tableside, crab tagliatelle, and a double veal chop with a morel and sherry reduction. Every Friday and Saturday expect a packed house who come for the award winning cuisine and live music, and occasional celebrity impromptu performance.

Tiny Fork and The Cellar Evoking the feeling of a Cape Cod beachside seafood shack is the Tiny Fork, which is named after the utensil used to eat raw oysters. Complete with a fish net, aquatic colored banquettes and seating, it has an old school fish and chips feeling set in the Lower East Side. Boasting a massive selection of fresh oysters from the East and West Coasts, start with the raw bar. Other seafood comfort food like oyster sliders with waffle fries, fried fish tacos, lobster grilled cheese, and fish & chips are served on newspaper printed paper to give it an authentic touch. For fine dining opt for the baked whole brook trout or the spice rubbed ahi tuna steak. Make sure to try their craft cocktails. Creative concoctions like habanero infused margaritas, and the black velvet that features ginger beer, raspberries, and vodka, or the michelada featuring Sriracha and tabasco laced pilsner whet the palette. Naturally, a Lower East Side hotspot wouldn’t be complete without a hidden basement lounge, The Cellar is open nightly after 10 and features red tufted banquettes and world class DJs. Jack the Horse Tavern Named after a serene and picturesque lake in Northern Minnesota, Jack the Horse Tavern, is the American dream of Tim & Micki Oltmans who wanted to create a cozy neighborhood enclave that embodied the sophistication of a French bistro with the feeling of a British pub serving contemporary American fare. This Brooklyn Heights neighborhood fave has been drawing a loyal following ever since it opened. With stints at Gramercy Tavern and Tabla, chef and owner Tim Oltmans has perfected his execution of classic tavern cuisine. Solid dishes like mac n cheese with fontina and gouda continue to get rave reviews as well as the grilled octopus with chorizo, and the black sea bass cioppino that is finished with a classic carmelized tarte tatin. Reflecting the quaint and homey feel of the neighborhood, though Jack is only across the bridge, it feels like miles away from the bustle of NYC.

Tokya Modeled after the Japanese restaurant/ nightclubs found in Japan’s Roppongi or Shibuya, Tokya is the latest subterranean Japanese themed nightclub by Roee Nahmani of Pink Elephant. In its former life, this space was once an infamous “gaysian” bar, which has been transformed to house a haute Japanese restaurant that turns into a late night dance club. Though it’s on the same block as the more overt nightclub destinations like Tao and Lavo, Tokya offers a more intimate feeling with resident DJs and colorful images of Tokyo’s pop culture projected on the walls. At the helm of the dining experience is executive chef Eiji Takase who was previously at Japonais, Shibuya, and Sushi Samba and has honed his specialty in creative fusion cuisine such as beef tataki, salmon tiradito, as well as specialty rolls like spicy tuna with chimichurri sauce or a salmon roll with melted mozzarella jalapeno and spicy mayo. Open nightly until 11 pm, the party lasts until the wee hours on the weekends.

Birds of a Frotta S

hortly after Flatiron’s Ciano closed, the genius of a restaurateur, Stratis Morfogen, insouciantly announced, “Well, I’m going back to Italian-American” - this after realizing that his renowned purist of a chef, Shea Gallante, was taking himself out of the picture. The comment, unlike the resulting cuisine, could have been taken with a grain of salt especially since like most of Morfogen’s creations, the new Cucina Ciano was a work of art in progress – one in which process and vision were not only in flux but coexisted in what can best be referred to as a progressive tarantella whose outcome would prove seductive. With the help of his partner, Unik Ernest, Cucina Ciano has become one of the hottest restaurants in the tony bastion of the Upper East Side. But let’s go back to the mission statement, ‘Italian-American.’ The term has innumerable interpretations. It can mean anything from ‘ancestrally Italian but acclimated to local tastes’ to ‘more quintessentially Italian than real Italians (since those who rediscover their past often do so with the zeal of a convert)’ to ‘immigrant Italian with all the nuances that adaptation entails’. For the sake of brevity, let’s just say that in the case of Cucina Ciano it means

whimsical forays into regional Italian cuisine – each departure harmonized with the given season.

Executive Chef Tin Huynh – an idiosyncratic name for a Neapolitan if ever there was one – has come up with arguably the best veal meatballs in the city. Authentic? Amor tutti egguaglia as they say; and you can really taste Huynh’s love for all things Italian in every bite. From the imported Burrata cheese with Panzella arugula salad to the Mancini Spaghetti Arrabiatra sauce to the Strozzapreti

with Duck Bolognese Pregano, there is little doubt that he is a genuine cuoco Italiano at core. For the more skeptical, I suggest a brief gustatory sojourn into the housemade pappardelle with pork ragout, caramelized onions and marcilla. When it comes to ambience and décor, it is utterly Milanese – in other words, as cosmopolitan and un-Italian as most high-end establishments in the homeland. Amber bartops and stools, light wooden tables, an exposed brick wall with a darker wood paneling in the private dining room below make for a club-like atmosphere that is further reaffirmed by the piped in Sinatra. With all the Southern Italian tomato sauces and the Northern Italian décor and the American Italian music… well, I think I’ll have to return several more times before jumping to any conclusions.

oadside clam shacks crossed with culinary aspiration? You’ve seen the likes of the former in films celebrating the 50’s by the coast: Gas stations with Coca Cola signs dangling precariously in the wind, Ice cubes advertised in handwritten cutouts off some seaside interstate, a badly drawn lobster with the words Open till Sunset, and always the phrase Extra Fancy grotesquely stuck like a label on something as innocuous as canned soup.

Where but in hipster heaven could you resurrect such a vision and endow it with both meaning and prestige. It took New Englander Mark Rancourt to seize such a theme and found the bar restaurant that now bears the name Extra Fancy, but it took a place like Williamsburg to embrace his concept and see it as something perfectly normal. It’s pretty extraordinary in that ‘ordinary retro kind of Grizzly Bear, MGMT or Weekend Vampire kind of way.’ Basically, Extra Fancy brings Brooklyn music aesthetics into food – it juxtaposes highend culinary art and composition with indie arrangements and low-fi production. From its inception with chef Ross Florence of Le Bernardin, there has been an emphasis on gastronomical integrity wherein ingredients mattered. From the golden brown Cape Cod

To go utterly ‘Brooklynesque’, however, means kitsch without the facile syrup. At Extra Fancy this means Cocktails like the refreshing herby Ray-Ray and the tart but smooth Squibnocket or the bittersweet-gone-all-out-sweet Papi, Do me a Favor, or the ever-so-simple but chic spirit Averell Damson Gin. For dessert a Bread Pudding or Ice Cream Sandwich will make you remember that Post-ironic is not such a bad thing when it comes to honest-togoodness heart-cloggers. Extra Fancy is advertised as a casual neighborhood restaurant – which in itself is pretty telling since Williamsburg’s casual is relatively self-conscious and its neighborhood is an idiosyncratic amalgam of several different niche groups rolled into one. They might as well have said, “Michelin tires, Michelin stars – same difference… we’re not trying to do anything fancy – we just want the best.”

As seafood soups and salads go, the Baby Romaine with watermelon, radish, cucumber and buttermilk or the Lobster Bisque and Littleneck Clam Chowder are classics with just the right amounts of nuance.

Mexico’s Medina M

edina has founded yet another Mecca - admittedly, an irrelevant pun given that Julian Medina is a Mexican chef while the new Mecca being referred to is a third restaurant in a growing New York based franchise known as Toloache. Still, there is something religious about Medina’s following – especially if one looks at the loyal clientele that still flock to his earlier theater district location and the later converts that seek culinary redemption at his Upper East Side venue. Counting myself amongst the devout masses, I decided to go on pilgrimage to the new Toloache on Thompson where rumor had it that revisionists had altered the sacred texts. Resolved to go through my dining ritual, I took the holy menu in hand and began to chant out my usual order as if by rote. First I recited my steadfast belief in the guacamole trinity – one avocado variation with onion and Serrano chilies, tomatoes and cilantro leaves; another fiery variation with chipotle and queso fresco; and the father of all flavors – the one with ripe mango, peach habanero and Thai basil and pomegranate seeds. As libation came in the splendid form of a chef selection Margarita, I muttered my

No matter what your religious preference, it is clear that Julian Medina remains New York’s high priest of Mexican cuisine. As the former executive chef at Maya and Pampano and the founding chef of Zocalo, he would easily have convinced conquistadors to adopt the Aztec belief system if it meant ending their meals on crepes with caramelized goat milk, marcona almonds and banana ice cream. Leaving the Thompson street establishment, I thought to myself, if Medina was indeed building a franchise, I hope it outlasts our major world religions. As Bertold Brecht once wrote: first comes the full stomach then comes ethics. •

It was then, while looking through my favorite passage on qiesadillas with manchego, black truffles and huitlacoche, that I suddenly noticed something new. Less an ordinary restaurant than a living exhibition on the evolution of the community, Moran’s juxtaposes contemporary American cuisine with historic dÊcor. With moody fireplace, tin ceiling, exposed brick walls, Tiffany lamps, and Waterford Crystals, the recherchÊ trappings make it easy to recall everything that led up to the Irish pub that ÍSTU PQFOFE JUT EPPST JO Housed within a building that dates back to the 1880’s, one senses how a quiet colonial area soon became a bustling center for longshoremen, sailors, distillery workers and odd groups of immigrants. As for the prominent cherry wood bar discretely standing among the other functional artifacts, it is a survivor of the prohibition period – one that had likely played an instrumental role in keeping bootleggers and speakeasy clientele in good cheer.

Soon, it is time for the pastoral backgrounds to make their appearance: cucumber pear with field greens, toasted almonds in a sherry honey dressing; Arugula with feta cheese; artichoke with blue cheese; or asparagus with goat cheese. With a virtual meadow of flavors from which to choose, the mood for the main course is set.

pieces of the meal are accompanied by minor works that echo the dominant theme. Grilled salmon is beached on a sandy shore of rice and spinach while garlic roasted peppers and butter sauce dot the periphery. The pan-seared red snapper comes with broccoli rabe and fingerling potatoes, while the shrimp scampi is shown in its best light with linguini and white wine bringing just the right flair. Whether opting for the grilled lamb chops, New York strip or the roasted chicken, it is hard to overlook how well these vintage creations fare once restored with contemporary redress. For a decadent flight of fancy, try the gaucho burger - made of Black Angus ground beef with garlic cilantro alongside an order of truffle Gorgonzola fries. If a new category of restaurant could be established, I’d probably list Moran’s as a ‘gastronomic gallery’. Fine dining in her premises is a crash course in understanding why Chelsea and its history are so unique. •

rank DiCocco was a highly respected 29-year-old high school football coach who turned down a position at Yale to work with inner city teenagers that needed encouragement and guidance both on and off the field. In 2010, he wrote “Playbook for Manhood,” an instructional guide to help young men develop the positive characteristics of manhood. In 2011, he created “The REAL Man Program,” a character-education curriculum for coaches and teachers to use to instill in their players and students respect, integrity, courage and honor. Tragically, Frank’s life was cut short last April when he lost his courageous battle against bone marrow failure. After this devastating personal tragedy, his parents, Kathy and Lou DiCocco, turned their pain into a quest to continue their son’s legacy and work. They took their cues from Frank who believed that positive action and determination can surmount any tragedy. From working with some of the country’s leading high school and collegiate programs, he discovered his core mission of helping develop character and leadership skills in underprivileged

By Isaiah Negron young people. In 2011, Frank had come to his parents with a plan. “He was coaching kids who were going home and all too often were not finding dinner or family members ” Kathy explains. “He asked us to start a foundation to raise money for student athletic scholarships, team dinners and camps, which we did.” Together Kathy, Lou and Frank started The H.O.P.E. Foundation, a non-profit organization that centers on Helping Other People Excel. Today, the DiCocco’s faithfully carry on their son’s mission to help train youth in need. “We both have done our own charity work but this was Frank’s niche in the athletic world and we want to continue to carry out his dream,” Lou says. The DiCocco’s have partnered with Hartford’s Camp Courant, the oldest and largest free summer camp program in America. Together with The H.O.P.E. Foundation, the camp will launch a pilot program this summer using The REAL Man Character Development Program that features 20 lesson plans. This program

will help over 1,100 young people to build character and make the right choices when faced with tough decisions. “We told Camp Courant about Frank’s Development Program and they loved the books so we were happy to donate them for their curriculum,” says Kathy. Lou added, “We’re also trying to get the book into as many schools across the country as we can.” On January 12th, the DiCocco’s had a booth at the American Football Coaches Association in Indianapolis, the largest convention of its kind that brings together coaches from across the country from high schools, colleges and the NFL. The DiCocco’s handed out three thousand copies of “Playbook for Manhood” to interested coaches. “Our kids really need direction in today’s society,” Lou said. East Side Eloise W hat’s in a name? Be it Montague or Capulet, it’s unlikely that either side would question the sweet smell of a successful Tisch. Whether one is an art student in NYU, a duck waddling through Central Park’s Children’s zoo, a man with a business plan, or simply Sam the simpering NY Giants fan, even Dr. Seuss would have had to admit that as philanthropists go “no former performer’s performed this performance.” But I have not come to bury a legacy under sycophancy but to praise Jonathan, a distinguished Tisch family member, and to partake in his most recent adventure.

Rhyming away… Admittedly, I was giddy. The idea that I would soon be interviewing a business magnate who was not only one of the most successful CEO’s alive, but a man who had, himself, regularly interviewed business luminaries over the course of an Emmy-nominated TV show entitled Beyond the Boardroom with Jonathan Tisch was daunting. It also didn’t help to realize that – at the time of this interview – all of New York was readying itself to host Super Bowl XLVII, an unprecedented event that was fostered by none other than Jonathan, who served on the Board of Directors of the New York Giants. That and the fact that I had recently attended a Tribeca Film Institute event – another non-profit organization of which Jonathan was a board member – didn’t do much to steady my nerves. ‘Calm down, he’s just an ordinary fellowship (sic)’ - one that donated 40 million dollars to fund a college for active citizenship and public service, a munificent endeavour to make young people both socially and environmentally conscious even while pursuing commercially viable projects. I’ll make an appointment, conduct my interview and that’ll be that.’ “Yes, of course, we can meet there,” I heard myself saying; “Of course, I know where the Loews Regency’s located,” I added. And, of course, I

t Resident February 2014

also knew that Jonathan Tisch was the chairman of the hotel chain and was, in fact, the co-chair of the entire Loews Corporation; so much for quiescence.

Keep it light, tight; get in, get out. This isn’t a job interview; I’m simply doing my job and it’s Tisch who’s being interviewed. Revved up and grumbling in the subdued manner of a Bugatti Veyron, I shimmied my way down Park Avenue till I got to the esteemed Midtown address of the recently revamped Loews Regency. Walking into the silver-toned alabaster world, I was overwhelmed by the timeless themes; the sensibility smacked of the Gilded Age with a post-modern twist: the grand marble entrance with its deconstructed pipe organ motif, the exuberance for space coupled with recherché design... There were no ostentatious asides, no frivolous tributes to bygone trends and no faux period pieces; rather, there was sheer decisiveness of vision. The renowned Rottet Studio had done its job; or at least it had done the job required by Jonathan Tisch - Jonathan, who had spent the better part of a year and 100 million dollars reimagining the Regency; Jonathan, who would probably keep me waiting, Jonathan who would probably be too haughty if he even did show up, Jonathan whom I would most likely be referring to as Mr. Tisch for the duration of our meeting.

Story by Rory Winston Photography by Dave Kotinsky

“So you just turned 60, you must be pumped for the Super Bowl and for the reopening of this hotel, it’s a pleasure, how are you, I had done it; I had managed to squeeze three distinct questions into a single badly phrased greeting. Having a talent of turning a disadvantage into a calamity, I continued, “I heard you had a crazy 3 day birthday party in Miami, I’d love to hear about it.

“Guess what, Tisch laughed, “you won’t. Soon, however, Tisch indulged my laborious brand of over-familiarity and went on to explain how his family – back in the 40’s started by owning a simple summer camp in Lakewood, New Jersey. He soon related how he and his cousin Andrew eventually became co-chairmen of Loews after having worked their way through every conceivable area of the industry for over 34 years; while Jim Tisch became CEO. Since Jonathan’s brother was a film producer, it was natural that a bulk of the responsibilities as regards the Giants fell upon him after their dad, the business magnate, Bob Tisch, had died. To this day, it was Jonathan’s brother that attended every Giant game. After summarily dispatching the story of his career, Tisch wasted no time in shifting the emphasis from himself to his love child, the Regency. Like a strange cross between an expectant father and the steady-handed obstetrician, Tisch spoke about the Regency with both rapt expectation and detached understanding as regards its development. As the father, he had wanted to insure that nothing went

wrong in delivery and so he brought in talented designers like Rottet Studio, Meyer Davis Studio and Jonathan Nehmer and Associates. As the doctor, he knew that no birth was complete without partners such as Sant Ambroeus for the Bar and Grill and the inimitable Julien Farel for the salon and spa. And as a midwife par excellence, he handpicked every fabric, approving each aspect involved in the redesign of what was now UIF HVFTU SPPNT UIF TRVBSF GPPU salon, spa and fitness center, and the four totally new private meeting spaces that made up the monolithic hotel. Bolstered by my placement at one of Tisch’s recently resuscitated Regency power breakfasts, I couldn’t help but recall the PQFOJOH UP UIF QVCMJDBUJPO PG ,BZ Thompson’s children’s classic: “I am Eloise. I am six. I am a city child. I live in the Plaza. It was easy to understand why many referred to Jonathan Tisch as a ‘male Eloise.’ Jotting down an appropriate opening for a would-be biography on the man, I wrote: “I am Tisch. I am sixty. I have become a city. I live and breathe the Regency.

Much to my chagrin, Mr. Tisch was punctual. What was worse, he was giving me his full attention without a tinge of condescension. The rich velvet sofas of the Lobby Lounge coupled with the high-speed internet connections lent an air of whimsy to what could otherwise have easily passed for an austere contemporary proscenium for an operatic version of the Last Tycoon – one in which I would be destined to play a frazzled Didi to Tisch’s Monroe Stahr. As I stood besides Nina Helm’s installation, Brise de Printemps, I noticed the seductive dÊcor against which the vibrantly self-sustained piece was set and understood the implications such a juxtaposition had for my own life: act sophisticated but casual, enthusiastic but not smarmy.

New York›s duchess of floral design, the CEO of Trellis Fine Florals is building an empire out of exquisite taste: one arrangement at a time. She and her fleet of designers craft impeccable arrangements for the city’s elite, including iconic names in hospitality and retail, and dozens of noteworthy socialites. Among her Park Avenue clients, Alix is right at home. She has a face that you might find on a magazine cover; and beneath, incisive wit and a shrewd business mind. “I understand my clients—their tastes, needs, and expectations—I listen and anticipate, then instruct my team to get it right,” she says. In the Trellis studio, Alix has a focused intensity. Her range is astounding—from arrangements that cascade like a southern belle’s ringlets to modernist pieces that conjure sound and fury to dense, lush, in-vogue designs. Each Trellis arrangement seems to mirror Alix’s multifaceted personality: glamorous, edgy, and simultaneously nostalgic and modern. “My personal aesthetic is rich, stormy, romantic—it’s all about abundance,” Alix says. “I’m inspired by French, English and Flemish styles.” The formally trained florist was initiated at the Ecole des Fleurs at the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris, and later at the New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx. Trellis designs are by no means limited by Alix’s personal style: every Trellis designer undergoes a thorough initiation to expand her capability and stay far ahead of trends. From sultry gold-flecked orchids to tightly packed bouquets and nosegays to potted plants of all sizes, Trellis designs blend seamlessly with their environments, the clients’ visions, and the allotted budget. As head floral strategist, Alix works alongside notable restaurant and hotel managers, event hosts, and the occasional bride. “We treat every client with respect, dignity and care, no matter the size of the engagement,” says Alix. Subscription services make up the bulk of Trellis› business. A hotel or luxury retailer may call for a custom floral motif; a Manhattanite might request a pink palette one week, and all

Bianca Del Rio: Today, “Drag Race,” Tomorrow, the World

W

ielding incredibly sharp wit, an unapologetic tongue and a killer ensemble, Bianca Del Rio is a queen who consistently breaks the mold of what it means to perform in drag. Her coveted upcoming spot as a contestant on the sixth season of Logo’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” not to mention her rise to power in both New Orleans and New York City, has solidified her as one of the top drag queens in the country. Born in Gretna, Louisiana, right outside of New Orleans, Bianca’s talent for design gave her a first taste of success and an ease about being in the spotlight, winning six Big Easy Entertainment Awards for costume design, including one at only 17. “I’ve always enjoyed design. I used to draw a lot and creating things has always been an important part of my life,” Bianca remembers. “Even now, I still keep a day job and do drag at night because I like the creative freedom to get to do both. I’m sort of a one-stop shop.” After attending FIT in New

Words by Isaiah Negron York City, Bianca returned to New Orleans at 18 and moved into the French Quarter. In 1998, Bianca stepped out on stage for the first time and stole the show with her irreverent attitude and infallible insults. Her unmerciful entertaining got her voted New Orleans Gay Bitch of the Year six times and New Orleans Gay Entertainer of the Year for three years. “I always say that if I didn’t wear a wig, I would be called ‘nasty’ but when I wear a wig, it’s called hysterical,” she laughs. “It’s the packaging to get away with murder.” After Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, effectively shutting down the French Quarter, Bianca returned to the Big Apple after an invite from an old NOLA friend already residing in the city. “I felt like it was the golden handcuffs. I was working in a bar five days a week for ten years and still doing costumes for theater, but it kind of didn’t go anywhere. So a friend of mine told me to come on up and hang out,

and I ended up staying,” she says. In 2005, Bianca hit the NYC bar scene, hosting at some of the city’s most popular gay hotspots. Her insult-comic acts never fail to rip apart any unfortunate patrons that fall into her crosshairs using what she calls her “Rolodex of Hate” for her favorite part of hosting, audience participation. “I found it fascinating because, when I got to New York, people were always saying, ‘Well, what does she do?’ In the bars, you’re either a lip synch queen or a dancing queen or a queen who sings live,” explains Bianca. “I’ve done all of that, which does come in handy, but generally I choose to be the host and do comedy. It wasn’t really a plan, and sometimes I even surprise myself!” Her success as a personality and host most recently earned her the awards of Best Hostess, Best Comedy Performer and Entertainer of the Year at the 15th Annual Glam Awards last year, horning the best of NYC Nightlife, which she also cohosted.

that environment. It’s all about skills,â€? Bianca acknowledges. “If you can’t sing, dance, act, do comedy or sew, the show really isn’t for you because it’s the only way to survive.â€? Bianca’s newest endeavor branches her out into a different spotlight, one that resides in the film world. Working with her close friend, award-winning editor and aspiring filmmaker Matt Kugelman, Bianca will star in her first full-length comedy “Hurricane Bianca,â€? a movie about a small-town Texas teacher who is fired for being gay and returns as Bianca to enact revenge and wreak havoc on the malicious townspeople. iPark’s Bill Lerner: Saving Lives with Shoes By Isaiah Negron

P

arking entrepreneur Bill Lerner is breaking new ground with his parking business iPark and his recently founded charitable initiative, Billy4Kids. The booming parking business, which is launching a new app this spring was founded in 1962 by Bill’s father Jack with a single 25-car lot. Bill took over the business in 1978 and expanded it to over 100 garages across New York City. “Parking has become similar to the hotel and airline business where everyone is shopping online for the best price and most convenient locations,” explains Bill. “I wanted to make something that was user-friendly and easy to navigate so that when someone is driving into the city, they know exactly where they’re parking before they even leave their home.” Since taking over iPark, Bill has overseen the company growth into the largest, privately held owner-operated garages and parking lots in New York State. ipark.com Lerner is also an active philanthropist and is involved with multiple NYC-based charities including the Alzheimer’s Association and the Children’s Tumor Foundation. It was his desire to help others that led him to found his own charity, Billy4Kids, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children in need by providing them with one essential item, often taken for granted; shoes. “Life has been good to me and I wanted to give back, but I wanted to give back with something that was my own,” he says. The charity was conceived after a conversation with his friend, Alexson Roy, now the Co-Director of Billy4Kids, who shared Lerner’s goal of helping those living in poverty in underdeveloped countries. “Alexson is in touch with third world nations and their needs. We started talking about children who were dying, not from starvation, but from foot-born diseases because they had nothing to protect their feet from sewage on the streets,” Bill recounts. “All you have to do is give these children a pair of shoes. It’s that

boxes in each one where everyone can donate new or worn shoes in all sizes. “People normally throw out their children’s shoes when they’ve outgrown them, or they sit in a

closet for five years after the child can’t wear them anymore,” says Bill. “So why not have everybody unclutter their closets and drop off these shoes in a box conveniently located in an iPark garage as they’re going to retrieve their car? It’s a win-win for everyone.” The organization, which delivered a shipment of shoes to Haiti over the holidays, will expand their outreach to Ghana and Brazil as well. “I don’t see a ceiling on this,” Bill remarks. “I see this becoming a self-sustaining charity that has a serious global impact.” Bill Lerner billy4kids.org

F

lowing from the foothills of the Italian Dolomites comes Italy’s newest and most elegant Prosecco, Altaneve. Originating in the town of Valdobbiadene in Treviso, Italy, an area known for producing the highest quality of sparkling wine for centuries, Altaneve is composed of 100% glera grapes that are handpicked and hand-selected on the steep hillsides on which they exclusively grow. Altaneve, which literally translates to “high snow,” possesses a distinct fruity and floral bouquet with notes of peach, pear and honeysuckle. An extended secondary fermentation gives the wine its signature smooth and crisp finish. David Noto, the owner and importer of Altaneve, comes from ten generations of Italian winemakers and became a Prosecco connoisseur while he lived and worked in Italy as an engineer doing European Community projects. His family heritage caught up with him when he moved to the United States in 1999. Over the course of the last decade, David saw the popularity of Italy’s legendary sparkling wine surge. “I love Prosecco and I

By Isaiah Negron would drink it often,” David says, “What really inspired me to do this was, when I moved to New York, I realized that good Proseccos were not available. So when the idea came to me to get back into the wine business, it was an ideal arrangement for me.” He returned to Italy and traveled to the Prosecco Superiore D.O.C.G. region where the highest quality of Prosecco is made. This area dates back to 30 B.C when Prosecco was called “Pucino” and was the preferred wine of the Empress Livia Augusta. Out of the 14 blends that are offered in Italy, David selected the noblest one to bring across the Atlantic and present to America. “These hills and vineyards have been providing Prosecco for over 2,000 years,” explains David. “I wanted to create a new luxury brand of Prosecco for wine connoisseurs in the United States, in terms of taste and quality.” And at under $30 a bottle, Altaneve’s superior blend and refined taste and is doing just that. The cork of the first bottle in the United States

was popped in August 2012 at his father’s 70th birthday celebration, but Altaneve was not widely available to the public until May of 2013. The sparkling wine has garnered superlative reviews from the critics and is being appreciated by both wine aficionados and adventurous social drinkers alike. David is looking towards an exciting future. “This coming summer, we hope to have a glerabased sparkling rosé,” David says. “We have a number of blends that we are testing to find the right one for the U.S. market. We will taste them in the spring and launch it in the summer.” The cognoscenti have already started placing their orders for this important new spumante. olistic is characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole. This is the foundation for Dr. Neil Sadick’s innovative approach for his patient care as one of the leading aesthetic dermatologists in NYC. He calls it “3-D rejuvenation” and in the most basic terms means the individual assessment of the patient for their specific signs of aging and a treatment plan that will combine different tools to treat and address all problems as a whole. “When a patient comes in for a consult with me, I assess the aging processes that we see occur in fat, muscle, vascular and skin as one and create individual treatments that address them all in harmony to produce an end result that whispers natural and undone”. Sadick Dermatology on the Upper East Side is a spectacular office that boasts the latest and greatest in aesthetic medicine including a tremendous arsenal of lasers, devices fillers and toxins. Dr. Sadick is currently the president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) and has been author or co-author of more than 500 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has contributed to more than 80 chapters of medical books. These include all the newest, advanced laser, radiofrequency and ultrasound technologies which can both help reverse and prevent the signs of aging not only on the face but also in other areas of the body including the neck, hands, and décolleté. These can be utilized to remove unwanted age spots, irregular pigmentation problems, as well as areas of facial redness and blood vessels. magine coming home to rose petals floating in a warm bubbly bath and a chilled bottle of Bollinger La Grande Année Rosé placed next to it; all prepared by a hotel attendant. The concept of an apartment with all the comforts of a hotel excites most of us, so it’s no surprise that in recent years this luxurious lifestyle has become a real estate phenomenon. Oldworld luxury hotel and residence buildings like the prestigious Carlyle, Pierre, Plaza, Mark, and Sherry-Netherland Hotels have been known as Manhattan’s most esteemed hotel-condos, but the high-end market is now seeing a surge of modern hotel-condos which are redefining the meaning of hotel living and magnetizing affluent foreign buyers. Many preeminent real estate developers have joined forces with leading hotel brands to build ultra-modern glassy towers where dazzling condominiums are perfectly matched with state-of-the-art hotel amenities and superior services that surpass those of traditional hotels. According to The New York Times, nearly a dozen projects in and around New York City that offer hotel services and amenities have recently opened or are nearing completion. Inspired by Baccarat’s jewel-like perfection, the 50-story flagship Baccarat Hotel & Residences New York is Midtown’s newest hotel-condo tower. The elegant, glassy project is currently being developed at 20 West 53rd Street by Tribeca Associates and Starwood Capital Group. Baccarat Hotel & Residences New York will offer 114 elegant hotel rooms, including 26 suites, operated by Baccarat Hotels and Resorts/SH Group. There will also be a total of 60 stunning condominiums starting on the 18th floor featuring a separate lobby with two passenger and a freight elevator for exclusive residential tower use. The residences comprise of one to five bedrooms ranging in size from 934 square feet to 7,381 square feet, including a limited number of duplexes, full floors and terraced homes. Tony Ingrao of Ingrao Inc. designed the magnificent interiors and each residence will feature a signature Baccarat lighting fixture in its foyer and display the most luxuriant surfaces, details, and materials as one should expect from Baccarat. Some of the luxury hotel services include concierge and service staff, housekeeping and turn-down services, 24 hour room service, personal shopping and delivery, child care services and in-residence personal chef service. Residents will also have exclusive Baccarat Hotel and Global Member privileges, including priority status for room reservations with preferred rates for owners, signing privileges at the hotel bars, restaurant, spa, and fitness center as well as hotel privileges in Baccarat Hotels worldwide. Some of these services are also available “a la carte”. Baccarat Hotel & Residences New York certainly lives up to the brand’s legendary reputation in the world of luxury and symbolic beauty.

Downtown has a variety of hotel-condo buildings, but some of them limit owners’ stays in their units to no more than 120 days a year. Positively, owning a residence at W New York Downtown Hotel & Residences gives an owner the unique ability to lease his condo out for a period of six (6) months or more, or make use of it when he chooses. Located at 123 Washington Street and completed in 2010 by The Moinian Group, the 57-story W New York Downtown Hotel & Residences contains 217 hotel rooms and 222 residences starting on the 32nd floor. This is the first W Hotel with a residential component in Manhattan and apartments here range in size from studio to two bedrooms of 400 to 1175 square feet and some could be purchased furnished or unfurnished. The chic interiors are designed by the Berlinbased Graft Studio. The building’s website refers to the avant-garde interiors as “a new and fresh look at the concept of comfort and luxury in its most contemporary and even futurist sense of minimalism”. Residents of W Residences enjoy insider access to W Hotel’s signature Whatever/ Whenever® service, including residential concierge, inresidence catering and dining, spa service appointments in a private treatment room on the 31st floor, access to tickets for local entertainment, and in-residence housekeeping services. Additionally, residents have exclusive access to a Digital Entertainment Lounge, private fitness center, rooftop terrace featuring splendid 360 degree views, and the main bar and restaurant. Other wonderful hotel benefits include preferred room rates at Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. W New York Downtown Hotel & Residences offers unparalleled lifestyle experiences and homes with magnificent views of lower Manhattan, including the new Freedom Tower. Unquestionably, wealthy foreign buyers are drawn to residences that come with a host of exclusive hotel benefits, amenities, and fine services as a lifestyle. Today, international buyers can find new hotel-condo buildings across Manhattan and choose from modern, contemporary, minimalistic, and avant-garde interiors. I don’t think that this real estate phenomenon will be short-lived. •

Madison Equities is a standout in its field because of its expertise across all aspects of real estate development including site selection, assemblage and possession, financing, zoning and permitting, contract negotiation, and innovative design. As a leader in the New York real estate development industry, Madison Equities is responsible for the development of many of Manhattan’s best known, awardwinning properties. The company’s first major project was The Excelsior, a 47 story tower on East 57th Street designed by architect Philip Birnbaum. The Excelsior features 371 luxury apartments atop a 200,000 square foot commercial base and garage. At the time of its completion in 1965, The Excelsior was the tallest reinforced concrete residential property in New York City. The tower is notable in New York City real estate history because it was the first truly mixed-use building in

Continuing to creatively approach mixed-use development, Madison Equities completed The Galleria on East 57th in 1975. The tower, designed by architects David Kenneth Spector and Philip Birnbaum, combined 252 luxury apartments with 150,000 square feet of commercial space and a parking garage. The Galleria’s 57 stories made it one of New York’s, and the nations’, tallest residential buildings at the time. In 1981 Madison Equities unveiled a 750,000 square foot office property at 875 Third Avenue. Designed by Bruce Graham of the Chicago Office of S.O.M., its black metal and glass façade, innovative multisided shape, and many atria made this property a standout at the time in New York’s real estate development. This concept had never existed before and its value greatly enhanced the tremendous success of the project. Another hotel, The Marriott Courtyard, designed by Vijay Kale, was the first hotel to be built on the Upper East Side in 75 years. The highly acclaimed Chelsea Modern, completed in 2008, is a 90,000 square foot, 47 unit condominium property located at 447 West 18th Street. In both projects Madison worked with Audrey Matlock to achieve spectacular results with average sites. Madison Equities, in conjunction with Property Markets Group, is continuing its impressive legacy with the construction of 10 Sullivan Street. This residential condominium project now underway is located in New York’s exclusive Soho neighborhood. The 16-story flatiron-shaped tower will feature 19 apartments and four 25 foot townhouses, slated for completion by the second quarter of 2015. By John Friia ith the New Year upon us, the hopeful resolutions of a bright and healthier 2014 come into view. One of the most common goals is to join a gym and get into shape, but unfortunately the majority of us fail at those resolutions by the middle of January. For people that are serious about getting into shape, there is a solution - Lift Gym, which has a unique model that other gyms do not follow.

Entering the 4-floor workout haven, Lift Gym is the only private training club in New York that works with over 60 independent trainers. What makes this gym different than the usual gym is the trainers bring in their own clients. Opening in 1996, owner and personal trainer Ken Fitzgerald created an environment that accommodates all types of trainers and people interested in working out. “I wanted a set up that was best for my clients and other trainers,” stated Fitzgerald. “We have many different philosophies helping everyone.” The workout oasis offers all members a place to grow their strength, functional, corrective exercise, post-rehab and athletic and cardiovascular training. Aiming to improve the overall well being of clients, Lift Gym provides nutritional counseling, massage therapy as well pilates and gyrotonics. “We have over 60 personal trainers that are top certified with at least a 4 year degree,” stated

t Resident February 2014

Fitzgerald. He explained all trainers have a large following and have been in the fitness business for numerous years. Lift trainers also travel to clients homes if necessary. With the continued success of his first location, Fitzgerald opened two other locations on Long Island to accommodate the clientele that vacation in the Hamptons for the summer. “It is a dual membership, so if someone belongs to the location in the city they can also work out on Long Island,” he noted. With many high profile and celebrity clients, Fitzgerald explained that the individuals that come to Lift Gym are serious about creating a healthy lifestyle and getting into shape. “We provide good energy and cater to everyone,” he said. “Everyone is comfortable working out at Lift Gym.” “We have an excellent retention rate”. • For more information visit: liftgym.com
