An Open Letter to New York City Parents New York City is losing its teachers.
More than 66,000 have either resigned or retired since Mayor Bloomberg took control of the schools. Teachers leave one of the toughest jobs in New York City for a variety of personal and professional reasons, but the most common single reason is a lack of support from supervisors and the Department of Education. Teaching is a craft that is acquired over time, and teachers desperately want to improve their skills. That is why the United Federation of Teachers led the campaign to create a better teacher evaluation system, one that put a priority on helping all teachers do their job better. The UFT’s role was critical in creating the new system, and in going to Washington, D.C. to help get federal funds for it through the Race to the Top program. Starting last spring, many of our members with expertise in evaluation worked for months on the state subcommittees designing the new system. We have been trying to work with the Bloomberg administration to iron out the final details of the new system, but the administration has refused to engage in meaningful talks about teacher and principal improvement. Instead it has focused on ensuring that administrators have unlimited power over their employees. If we agree, it will mean that supervisors’ decisions can never be properly reviewed, much less overturned. This would be true even if their negative rating of a teacher or a principal can be proven to be the result of their refusal to inappropriately change a student’s grade or to give students credit for courses they have not properly completed. Make no mistake about it. The administration has put tremendous pressure on principals to make their schools appear to be successful. But any claims of success ring hollow in the light of national tests that show very limited student progress for the system as a whole, and state measures that show that while the high school graduation rate is increasing, the number of graduates ready for college is only about one in five.
The sad truth is that Mayor Bloomberg’s “reform” agenda — raising class size across the system; closing schools and “warehousing” the neediest students; pushing art and music out of the schools to make room for more test prep; turning a deaf ear to parents’ concerns; and appointing a completely unqualified publishing executive to be Chancellor — hasn’t made our schools better. A real teacher evaluation system that helps all teachers improve while providing checks and balances is a critical step toward stopping the hemorrhaging of our teaching force and making our schools more effective. At the same time it would help ensure that teachers who cannot succeed in the classroom leave the profession. We have an open offer to the administration to continue our negotiations on this issue, or even to take it to binding arbitration. It’s time the administration sat down with teachers and principals to come up with an agenda that will actually help our children learn. Sincerely, Michael Mulgrew President United Federation of Teachers Resident

“It looks like best of America,” Michel Witmer said, facing the Hudson Valley exibit at the entrance to the Winter Antiques Show opening night at the Armory. President Obama was across the street raising money. Martha Stewart, and Mayor Bloomberg were inside. That’s pretty American.
Jerry Lauren and Sheila Kotur
Witmer greeted Event Chair Arie Kopelman, with wife Coco and daughter Jill Kargman in signature Chanel. We enjoyed Kargman’s fast and funny collection of essays, “Sometimes I Feel Like A Nut.” “That’s the best thing you could have said to me,” Kopelman beamed. “The Rock Star in Seat 3A” is the name of her next book, due in May. “It’s about a girl who is upgraded to First Class, seated next to her idol, this rock star,” Kargman told us. “They start an affair.” Rock Star decorator Mario Buatta was making the rounds with Hillary Geary. For those of us more economically inclined, Stewart said she’s joining forces with J.C. Penney, working on “a big, interesting deal with ... Ron Johnson, the new CEO, who is trying to reinvent (the chain).” Jerry Lauren came up to Town and Country Creative Director Alexandra Kotur, with her mother, designer Sheila Kotur, in tow. “Congratulations, your mom said you’re looking pretty good!” he told the style maven, whose short mink jacket opened slightly to reveal her 8 1/2 month pregnancy. “It’s my second,” she told us (child, not jacket). Kotur left Vogue for Town and Country last spring. Of the editorial shift, she said, “The imagery is inspirational, but the product we put in the magazine is more realistic. Not the Balenciaga dress that is so short you can’t bend over, but a different kind of fashion shoot from the collection.”.It’s investment shopping, she continued. “We go to all the shows, examine things very carefully, and get to know the products in the houses. So, we’re putting our stamp on it. ….The message is if you are spending the money: this sweater, this piece of jewelry will last a lifetime.”
Martha Stewart
Also intending to last a lifetime: The January Town and Country featured the Loire Valley chateau, period wedding --complete with a gown designed by Michele Pfeiffer’s “Dangerous Liaisons” costumer --of France Tourism luminous executive, Katherine Johnstone. “That was SOME wedding,” remarked Kotur.

ention of Rosanna Scotto’s name conjures smiles on the faces of viewers. For over two decades, Ms. Scotto has been a fixture of broadcast news. In our exclusive interview, Rosanna tells New York Resident how she made it, what it means to be a New Yorker and how she balances work, home and her family’s famous restaurant. Having graciously invited us into her Fox 5 office which she shares with Ernie Anastos, Ms. Scotto got down to business answering our questions with wit, charm and poise.
Resident
New York Resident (NYR): I’d just like to start by thanking you for this opportunity; and as an Italian-American myself; it is wonderful to see such a strong Italian woman on television every morning. Rosanna Scotto (RS): Thank you. Not too strong, I hope! Women have to walk a very precarious line, you have to be strong, but not too strong – sometimes knowing me, I go over the line, but that’s what makes the show great! NYR: The name of our magazine is NY Resident. In that vein, what about you makes you a New Yorker? RS: I was born in Brooklyn, was raised their and eventually moved into the “city”. But I think it’s the attitude that makes you a New Yorker; and it’s engrained in you – you can survive and brush off anything. You’re not that impressed if you’re walking next to Brad Pitt – who cares? And then you quote Larry David. On an episode of his, he talked about “up streaming” other people in trying to catch a cab. The other day, this is a true story, I’m looking for a taxi and I look over to my right and there is the actress Christine Lahti, who is also looking for a cab, and she was Resident February 2012
there before me – I saw her as I was walking down the block. So, I said: “oh jeez, what am
I going to do? I’ll be up streaming”. Anyway, she sees me and crosses the street and walks
David and said: “no up streaming allowed”. I was only kidding, but she didn’t get it and yelled back: “I’m not up streaming”!! I felt bad afterwards and was looking for her on Twitter to let her know I was only joking. I think that incident illustrates what it means to be a true New Yorker. And then of course I have the Brooklyn accent, which I still have a little and it comes out when I’m tired. NYR: Was it hard to get rid of the accent? RS: Well, yes. All my employers sent me to a speech coach, to try to lose the accent. I guess I cleaned it up a bit, but it’s still there. Finally, at one point, they realized that’s what separates me from everyone else. I’m in the New York market, why are you really trying to get rid of it? NYR: What section of the city do you live, what do you like most about it and why are you there? RS: I am a resident of the Upper East Side and I remember your magazine; I remember when it was a newspaper. Now you’re all fancy, schmancy. I’m on the Upper East Side for two reasons. First, the kids went to school on the UES
and second, I work here. I always worked unusual hours. Whether I worked the night shift which was from 3pm to 10pm or now I’m here at 5am – I always wanted to be close to work so that I could get back and forth to the house for the kids or their schools. NYR: The kids are a little older now? RS: graduated college – she’s ready to move out a senior in high school. NYR: So you’ll have empty nest syndrome? RS: Yes, we’ll have empty nest syndrome, but we have a dog. NYR: What kind of dog? RS: She’s a cockapoo. She’s very sweet. kids always say he loves the dog more than he loves them. I don’t think it’s true, but it comes close. Her name is LuLu, named after the two men of my life, my husband and my son – both named Lou. NYR: Can you tell us some of the encouraging remarks or comments you’ve heard from New Yorkers? RS: I have to say, I’m so fortunate. People
always say the nicest things; and people appreciate that I am a born and bred New Yorker who tries to bring my experience, but also the fact that I am vested in this community every day. I am basically their representative on Fox 5. I am their community activist on TV. I always get positive reinforcement. NYR: How do you give back to New York? RS: Yes, one of them I’ve actually been with for probably over twenty years. I started when I was still living in Brooklyn. The name of the organization is Heart Share Human Services and they deal with everything from autistic kids to foster kids to young adults who have learning challenges. I am now serving on their board, but I started get awareness out on their good works and trying to help them raise money so they can continue to do the good that they are doing. Stars. It’s a great organization. They started in California and now have outposts in our area. Basically, it gives kids a place to go after
happen between 3pm and 6pm before many parents get home. This organization not only helps kids focus in and help them with their homework, but they also do sports and they learn respect. It really is a wonderful organization. NYR: You are quite well known for your fabulous parties in the Hamptons, do you do anything like that in the city? RS: No, I don’t too many in the city. I throw most in the Hamptons because I love the barbecue and there is space. Out there and I love making the sides and a great big pasta – you can make it room temperature. It’s really easy, casual and fun. In the city –it’s too much – you have to have help. I feel it’s too formal. NYR: You come from a well-respected restaurateur family, how has that shaped you? How involved in Fresco by Scotto are you? Is it day to day or bigger picture? RS: brothers were in California, they had a place

thought it was just craziness going on. My mother asked the boys, what would it take for you to come back? They said a restaurant. My mother had no idea what that would entail. She mortgaged the house in Brooklyn, because she found out how much it would cost to open up – she said it was going to be a family business. I helped out, my sister Elena left her job in fashion; my brother Anthony was the only one with restaurant experience. We all jumped in, we made it a family business. I’m there regularly, at least two to three times a week. I work on the bigger picture, for the restaurant and for the family. We are trying to take the restaurant into 2012, maybe with some new outposts in the area. It is great fun, my son loves to work in the kitchen; he’s thinking maybe this is something he wants to do later down the road. It’s a wonderful place because you know where to Fresco by Scotto, holding down the fort. NYR: break into broadcast journalism; can you tell us how you did it? RS: I did it the old fashion way. I graduated
college and I moved to Atlanta and took a low paying job. This is a funny story, when I was in college; I wanted to break into the business and there was a woman who was on WABC 7, who was THE person in broadcast news, it was Rose Ann Scamardella, the original ‘Roseanne Roseannadanna’ (from Saturday Night Live). She was friends with my family, a Brooklyn girl; her name was similar and I wanted to follow in her footsteps. And I asked her: “How do I break into the business”? She said: well I really didn’t go about it like everyone did. Come into the station and I’ll introduce you to someone who did it the way most people do”. The person was Ernie Anastos, and Ernie said you have to start small; go to a non-union shop; make your mistakes and make your way back to New York. That’s exactly what I did and I worked my with Regis Philbin, when he started here in New York, I was his segment producer and then once a week I was doing family reports for the show. Subsequently, I begged the Eyewitness News News Director to put me on the news on the weekends when someone
called out sick and that happened regularly and before you know it, I was working there. at Fox ever since. NYR: Are you still friends with Regis? RS: I am. In fact, we had Regis on the show not too long ago after he left his morning hours. He DID NOT retire, he left his morning show, and he’s come into the restaurant a bunch of times. He has been a wonderful friend over the years and he’s taken me under his wing and really helped me out. For that, I thank him and know whatever he does, he will be a success. NYR: Any Oscar predictions? RS: I’m still in the process at looking at some of them. Saw My Week with Marilyn, loved it. I very much want to go see The Artist. Margin Call, I fell asleep during a part of it – the middle part, I took a winter’s nap. NYR: Valentine’s Day, any plans? RS: My husband is a saint. Everybody calls him St. Louie, and what we will do, I’m not sure. He usually plans something. We are do something nice. But most importantly, I love him and he loves me. Resident

A
four-hour flight landed me in Aruba, an island in the Southern Caribbean known for its trade winds, casinos and white sand beaches. Away from the hustle of New York, I felt an instant calm the minute my feet touched the buttery soft sand of Palm Beach on the western coast where Aruba Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino was located. More relaxation awaited me at the Tradewinds Club at the Marriott and the new adults only H2Oasis pool.

The sun was shining again by the time we were done, and we jumped in the refreshing waters for a swim to the shore, and onwards with our day, with memories lasting a lifetime. Back at the Tradewinds Lounge, I devoured a savory sandwich and salad, and topped it off with a melt-in-yourmouth caramel cheesecake before my next adventure. With constant trade winds, shallow waters and gentle waves, Palm Beach is ideal for all types of activities from before visiting Aruba. I feared that I might get swept away out to sea where no one ease. So I signed up for an afternoon class at Vela Windsurf and Kitesurf Center near the resort. With shaky knees and a heart beating faster, I managed to stand on the board, face my fears, and pull the sail up. Within a half hour I was sailing, navigating the board over emerald blue waters, feeling free as a bird, and getting a few strange looks from the pelican perched on an anchored boat each
time I fell. My instructor was right there, guiding me, and taking pictures to capture moments I’ll remember for a long time.

Overlooking the ocean, La Vista, one of the seven restaurants on site at the Aruba Marriott, offers incredible views. Palm trees and small thatched beach palapas dot the landscape and guests sunbathe on lounge chairs. Sitting with my book in the outdoor patio, I took in the views while enjoying a piña colada.

Just when I was settling down, I remembered I had made an appointment with the Mandara Spa through the friendly concierge staff. The Mandara Spa is located in the Marriott Ocean Club, adjacent to the Resort. The spa won the 2005 “Best of the Caribbean” award from Caribbean Travel & Life and was ranked among the top 10 international spas by Celebrated Living in 2007. Immediately upon entering, I was treated to tea and was given a robe and slippers. My Aruban masseuse led me to the massage room through the dimly lit halls with warm colored walls adorned with Thai silk hangings. RiProvivdieingraSunshiNayari t , Mexi c o: ne Mixed with Warm Smiles By Lisa Loverro
Mexico has always been one of my favorite destinations; the diversity of the people and landscape to its history and unique cuisine, every visit has been awe-inspiring and educational. While there are many well-known tourist spots here: Riviera Maya, Cancun and Cabo, I thought I’d search for new piece of paradise in the country. So, when I was invited to attend a gourmet food festival in Nayarit, on the Pacific coast just north of Puerto Vallarta, I hopped on a plane faster than you could say “tequila.” Nayarit has quickly become the new hot spot in a country for golfing and 5-star resort accommodations. Named by the government in March 2007, The “Riviera Nayarit,” this 100-mile strip of pristine beach stretches just north of Puerto Vallarta up to the historic town of San Blas. The Pacific Ocean and Bay of Banderas lie to the west and the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range to the east. The origins of Nayarit are found in the indigenous ethnic groups of the Cora and Huichol Indians who settled in the Sierra Madre; to this day preserving their rich culture and ancient beliefs through their unique beaded artwork. Nayarit has everything to offer…history, culture, traditions, stunning beaches, dense jungles and ecotourism. Resident
First Page (Top to bottom): Rooftop lounge at the Imanta Resort Local fishing boat on the Bahia de Banderas Overview of the Grand Velas All-Inclusive resort Where the Jungle meets the Pacific Ocean in Nayarit Second page: Beach cove at the Imanta Resort
Rooms with a View Accommodations range from family all-inclusive resorts to romantic hideaways. My seven-day stay allowed me to sample a few of these resorts and tour through some of the intimate retreats. The recently opened Marival Residences and World Spa could not have been a more perfect spot to start my journey through the region. Their 2-bedroom, ocean-view residence was all things luxury, upstaged only by the rooftop private plunge pool, ideal for watching the last all-inclusive and a la carte accommodations. My next home in Nayarit was the Grand Velas Resort. This allinclusive (really, all-exclusive), AAA-5 Diamond resort with award is a favorite for the families and couples. This modern, all-suite resort is far from the all-inclusives the of past. If you are looking my pick is Frida for upscale, traditional Mexican fare. The Grand Velas Resort and SPA includes an Imperial SPA Suite to rival any Presidential and will surprise even the most discerning traveler.
Resident February 2012
Heading a bit further north to the area of Punta de Mita a recently opened villa resort adds new meaning to the word exclusive. Imanta Resort, literally built into a cliff along the lush edge of the jungle, borders the ocean and perfect for a romantic excursion. The real beauty to this Mexican Shangri-La is their approach to sustainability. It’s an architectural work of art integrating recycled wood and stone in a world where everything lives together harmoniously. Beyond the sustainable design, this vertical cliffside hideaway leads down to a perfectly situated beach cove where whale watching and sea turtle hatching are often viewed. There are only nine villas here with an additional Jungle Villa opening soon. If you’re looking for privacy with a touch of magic, I would suggest a splurge vacation to this slice of heaven.
Foodie Fantasy The seas offer mahi-mahi, sea bass, oysters and shrimp. Local dishes include a variety of ceviches and Pescado Sarandeado (Barbecued Fish). In addition to the local cuisine, there are exceptional upscale restaurants. Famed chef Thierry Blouet, who operates Puerto Vallarta’s premier restaurant, Café de Artistes has opened a new restaurant, Café de Artistes Del Mar, in Punta de Mita. The gourmet food festival headed by Chef Blouet attracts internationally known, award winning chefs into the region to prepare specialty dishes at local restaurants. During this visit to the
food festival my personal favorite experience was with Chef Junior Merino, a New York-based triple threat (master mixologist, chef and sommelier) known as the Liquid Chef whose cocktail list was as varied as it was unique. A perfect pairing of Coconut Ceviche with an Avocado Mezcal cocktail rimmed with Lemongrass salt or a refreshing Tequila Blanco, English cucumber and Pineapple drink paired with Lump Crab Soup was only the beginning to what proved to be a very indulgent evening. Thankfully, early morning runs along the wide stretch of beach served as the perfect antidote for my over indulgence. The Riviera Nayarit will certainly not only touch your heart but also linger in your soul for years to come.
Lay of the Land The rugged stretch of coastline is an ideal destination for surfers, nature enthusiasts and the thrill-seeking adventure traveler. Migrating humpback whales pass through the Bay of Banderas from December through March while July begins the nesting season for sea turtles. The Sierra Madre offers hiking, horseback riding and the ever-popular zip lining through the dense jungle

snorkeling and scuba diving, all available from nearby tours operators who have set up shop in the area. Visitors to the region should be sure to pass by the smaller resort town of San Francisco (San Pancho to the locals) to take in a polo match at La Patrona Polo club, and Sayulita where local artisans sell their crafts along the streets while surfers take to the waves.

We’ve all seen photos of Curaçao and its picturesque pastel colored buildings lining the waterfront. But to really see and know the island--and the islanders--you need to dig deeper…a lot deeper. This time around the beginning of the trip was focused on the underwater scene and some pretty amazing through pristine beds of coral. Curaçao offers all that and more. We’ve all seen photos of Curaçao and its picturesque pastel colored buildings lining the waterfront. But to really see and know the island--and the islanders--you need to dig deeper…a lot deeper. On our last visit about a dozen years ago the only time we were off shore was in a sail boat buffeted by high seas that induced a pledge from one of us to never get on a sail boat again. This time around the beginning of the trip was focused on the underwater scene and some pretty amazing opportunities. One half of this team has been scuba diving since 1961 and absolutely and wandering through pristine beds of coral. Curaçao offers all that and more. We stayed at the Lion’s Dive & Beach resort (www.lionsdive.com), a dive oriented hotel right on the white sand beach. Perhaps the only negative at this hotel was the walk-in, doorless bathroom providing absolutely no dignity whatsoever. Once past this failing, the experience was top notch. The open air dining room on the beach was perhaps amongst the most relaxing we’ve ever experienced and the food wasn’t too bad either. We opted to take all of our meals on the beach sand under the thatch umbrellas. Up on the nearby deck live music played, adding to the tranquil atmosphere. But we were here to dive. A short walk down the beach brought us to the Curaçao Sea Aquarium and just beyond that, the Dolphin Academy. Although we’ve been doing open water diving around the world for more years than we’d like to remember, we had never been in proximity underwater to these huge, beautiful creatures. While other similar programs keep the animals penned up or in large tanks, the Dolphin Academy lets them come and go at will, free to return to the open sea if they so desire. These animals are quite intelligent

and do sometimes take that option, but invariably return to the Academy grounds where they go through their routine with visitors. And, interestingly, the dolphins actually appear to enjoy the interaction. All participants are required to undergo a brief orientation so as to avoid any problems (or injury to human or dolphin) were issued. Although the dolphins were responding to cues from the Academy staff, it soon became apparent that they had minds of their own. One so thoroughly enjoyed having his belly rubbed, that he grew attached to us and refused to leave. Instead he kept bumping against us, urging the belly rub to continue. He thanked us with a kiss to the check. At the direction of the staff, we bobbed on the surface with arms outstretched and, palms down, slapped the water. Within seconds dolphins appeared on either side
of us, allowing us to grab onto their dorsal good clip of speed. That was a kick. We returned after lunch and, again after an orientation, were issued scuba gear. As group, we were still required to listen so that the staff was assured we knew what we were doing. They were patient and understanding with the newbie divers and made sure all questions regarding procedure were answered. The encounter area is a short swim underwater where dolphins will take hoops from your hands and will swim with cups covering their eyes to demonstrate their ability to locate items with their sonar. It is absolutely amazing to watch a blindfolded dolphin snag a hoop and swim away with it. Next up are the huge sting rays. Thoughts of what happened to Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, involuntarily
pass through your mind, but these gentle creatures soon dispel any apprehension. The rays will swim up to you and you can rub their backs and undersides, feed them bait food and enjoy the experience of a lifetime. From there you’ll proceed to a Plexiglas opening in a wire mesh net sectioning off a portion of the lagoon. A quick look immediately tells you that you are very glad the net is there. Cruising on the other side are some pretty damn big sharks accompanied by a few rather large turtles with sharp beaks. In the center of the Plexiglas is a small, round hole. The animals know to swim up to the hole where divers will be holding bait the hole or you’ll end up being called “stumpy.” On land Curaçao is a very easy to navigate
Papiamentu and English are commonly spoken. The main city, Willemstad, is divided in two by St. Ann’s Bay, an active shipway crossed on foot by a swinging bridge. Punda, the smaller section, has a solid waterfront of the pastel buildings, replete with boutique shops and eateries. On Punda is the quaint Kura Hulanda Hotel, restaurant and anthropological museum that should be a must stop for visitors. The far side of the bay, Otrabanda, eateries as well. There is also a maritime museum on the waterfront with a collection of interesting artifacts. Take an evening and treat yourself to dinner at the Rif Fort with its absolutely spectacular view of the harbor and the
boutiques that’ll suit every taste. One of the most unique places we’ve been to was Jaanchie’s (Pronounced “Yanchee’s) Restaurant in a somewhat remote part of the island. The eclectic menu has offerings Eating a lizard has never tempted us, but the goat stew was worth the trip. Celebrity Cruise Lines Tops Competition With Amenity One-Upsmanship By Bob & Sandy Nesoff Florida’s East Coast has long established itself as the dominant location for luxury cruising with its all-year-round weather and proximity to myriad Caribbean islands. But, that supremacy is about to be challenged. The greater New York/New Jersey port areas have entered the year-round cruise market offering an ever-expanding menu of ships to choose from. That menu has just gotten larger. Manhattan’s cruise center has an expanding list of ships for 2012, giving the region a big claim on attracting cruisers. But there’s more to the expanded opportunities in the region. A short hop from the Manhattan skyline is Port Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, one of the fastest and most convenient points of departure for giant luxury cruise ships. In the never-ending battle for the hearts and minds of travelers cruise lines have been on the hunt to add amenities that will draw in and awe passengers. Some lines have rock climbing walls, others add a zip line and Disney has an acrylic water slide chute wrapping around its newest ship. Where do we go from there? Celebrity Cruise Lines, arguably one of the leaders in luxury at sea, has really gussied up its new ship, the Silhouette, with And, in doing so, it added a new title to its staff…“landscaper and lawn mower.” Huh? On its open deck, Celebrity has added an area called “The Lawn Club” with a patch of grass big enough to make most homeowners jealous. The area gives cruisers the opportunity to practice golf putting,

play croquet and lawn bowling on a natural setting…except that you are hundreds of miles out to sea. Overlooking this green playground is a semi-open air dining area called “The Lawn Club Grill” with casual dining. Here guests may grill their own food with the assistance of a top chef, if they are so disposed. Nearby “The Porch” offers casual dining in the style of New York’s Long Island chic community, the Hamptons. Surrounding the Lawn is a series of the Riviera. The shaded, covered areas come baskets and beverages. There is a fee for use of the Alcove and the food and drink that varies, costing more for a full day at sea than it does if reserved while in a port. The ship has the signature Celebrity dining experience from casual meals to elegance in the Silhouette’s four specialty dining rooms. The 13-deck behemoth accommodates nearly 3,000 passengers in comfort and luxury with 90 percent of its staterooms affording guests an ocean view. Some 85 percent have verandas that provide more relaxation than any spa as you watch the water slip past the hull. Keep a sharp eye out and you might the ship. Children are a welcome add-on and cruisers should not hesitate to bring the youngsters along. There are certainly more than enough activities to keep them from getting bored and parents never have to worry about their safety.
Celebrity staffers treat children with a degree of respect that is amazing. They aren’t there to just baby sit. They interact with the young ones, never giving the kids the feeling that they are just being tolerated or dumped so that parents can relax. The Silhouette currently sails an itinerary from Port Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey until April 10 with itineraries to the Eastern and Western Caribbean touching such exotic ports as St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Labadee in Haiti and exotic St. Maartin as well as a host of others in the Eastern and Southern Caribbean. Following its April 10 sailing the Silhouette heads out to the Atlantic for a reposition cruise that will take in Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Spain, France and Malta. That’s followed with cruises to the Eastern Mediterranean, Adriatic and the Greek Isles. In late summer 2012 the ship makes port in the Holy Land and then in late fall it again traverses the Ocean returning to home port in Fort Lauderdale. The departure of the Silhouette makes room

Lush and tropical, each island is different and offers its own unique cache of treasures. I recommend seeing as many as you can, with a minimum three day stay on each one. It’s about a twenty minute you won’t be disappointed. Rent a car, don your sunglasses and explore. I have always found the beautifully blue Caribbean and its dots of postcard-perfect islands to be among the most breathtaking destinations in the world, with the added convenience of proximity to New York making the trip even more desirable. What keeps me searching, however, for alternatives are the throngs of tourists and over-developed commercialism found on so many of them. Having recently returned from back-to-back Caribbean visits, these thoughts are foremost in my mind as I write about one of them.
Prior to spending a week on the popularlyvisited Bahamas’ Paradise Island, I passed a few glorious days visiting the unspoiled and more paradise-like island of St Vincent. My destination there was the newly-opened, allinclusive Buccament Bay Resort, the only

Grace Bay Club also plays host to three restaurants and bars, attracting visitors and locals from all over the island to such culinary hotspots as Anacaona, a highly regarded restaurant featuring a spectacular menu designed by Chef Wolfgang von Wieser, who most recently held court in the kitchens of the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas before becoming the Food and Beverage Director for Grace Bay Resorts. For a sultry evening, the Lounge is a sexy cool outdoor back in the mood. And when it’s morning, the Grace Bay Club gets you going with an elegant breakfast buffetat the Grill Rouge, overlooking the beach. Touches such as honey drawn directly from honeycombs, premium teas and coffees, and made to order eggs make this a daily morning ritual. One of the activities we enjoyed was a cruise with Island Vibes, an unpretentious yet extremely comfortable boat that comes highly recommended by the Grace Bay Club. Captain Sean and his warm and entertaining crew took us to several spots, including a prime snorkeling spot on the reef, as well as Little Water Cay, also known as Iguana Island, where the only inhabitants are a protected species of iguanas only found here. Crewmember John later dove for conch, the sweet meat found in abalone shells, and prepared a feast of conch salad, rum punch, and various other treats for lunch. Since we had our twin boys with us for this visit, the KidsTown Kid’s Club was an essential part of keeping our to keep even the most rambunctious toddlers or carefree teens engaged and having fun! e’d had a perfect day, with a morning of snorkeling and island hopping, followed by a late lunch at the pool. Our twin boys, meanwhile, had been off at the kids club in the afternoon, making seashell picture frames. We gathered back together at the beach, in time to take an end of day swim together in the calm Caribbean waters fronting the decadently luxurious Grace Bay Club. To wax prophetic for a bit, what I’ve found from my travels is that the success of a great vacation, like this one, ultimately boils down to two things, place and people. Place is the tangible element, the where and what of an experience. In our case it was the island of Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean, located about halfway between the Bahamas to the Northwest, and Hispaniola to the South. In the category of clear blue waters and soft sand, the islands possess beaches that need to be put above all others in the Caribbean, and arguably, on par with such exotic locales as the Maldives or Tahiti. The climate can best be described as ideal, with a near constant ocean breeze which helps keep one cool even on the hottest days in July.

Our choice for this visit was the Grace Bay Club, an exclusive oceanfront luxury featuring separate accommodations and pools for families and adults only. Trust an experienced traveler, this is a huge plus for couples, as well as for us parents who occasionally need a break from the dependents. Accommodations range from one bedrooms in the hotel, to 4,000+ square foot three and four the property. Amenities include three pools, tennis and classes, spa, bikes, and VIP transportation to concierge level activities including scuba, sailing, For families, a much-heralded kids club called KidsTown provides both supervised morning playtime and activities, as well as afternoon the most disinterested teenager.

We joined them in the afternoon with KidsTown counselor Margaret for a trip to Coral Gardens beach, a lovely snorkeling spot where the kids could frolic in the calm waters while the adults occasionally snorkeled out to on reefs. This was followed by an early dinner at a vibrant local spot called Da Conch Shack. Morgan later joined us on a sunset boat ride courtesy of SURFside Ocean Academy, the island’s premier marine excursion and action a phenomenon of nature found just after sunset in the Leeward Channel side of the island, usually a few days after the full moon. With our mission accomplished, we then once again enlisted counselor Margaret from KidsTown, this time to babysit the boys while my wife and I enjoyed a night out alone.

Long gone are the days of the typical summer camp and college dormitories are the cabins. Adventure, academic, sports, performing arts – the list of summer camp categories to choose from seems endless. And while the kids are the ones who actually participate in the activities, parents are still responsible for selecting a camp to best suit the needs and interests of their children. One of the most popular summer trends for youth in recent years has been the rise of education and technology camps. With the support of the digital age, camp directors have developed engineering, computer science and other technology programs for elementary to high school students. These programs offer campers the chance to create their own iPhone apps, design video games, practice web design and build robotics. While these experiences may stray from the traditional summer camp (think gigabytes, not ghost stories), educators and parents can now worry less about the perils of “summer-learning loss.” However, this unique summer camp experience is often available at a heftier price due to the advanced technology needed for daily activities. Some kids still want the classic summer camp experience, and a chance to do what generations before them have done: sweat in the summer sun. Sports and recreation camps encourage athleticism, and frequently serve as performance-enhancing workshops. Experienced coaches and trained staff provide direction and tips for the future stars of the sports world. The biggest change in sports camps has been the development of more specialized programs. Rather than offering a wide selection of sports, some camps target one in the wilderness or shoot hoops on the New York City camp options. For the young Picasso, Hemingway, or Shakespeare, arts camps are a prime choice for summer. Instructors encourage creativity in song, dance, acting, painting and more. Many production. These camps can often inspire a child’s career path. As competition in the arts and entertainment industry continues to heat up, program directors have turned to a more professional approach. At some arts programs, campers create portfolios. Later, coaches and counselors offer critique, providing real-world experience. Travel camps are another favorite. Both day trips and overnight trips offer campers a chance to explore museums,
water parks or historical cities. Through travel camps, children with working parents do not have to wait until the weekend to visit landmarks in the area. As travel camps rise in popularity, so do many of the camps’ safety measures. Camp websites will usually post information such as the staff-to-camper ratio, and the As much as camps have changed, many aspects still remain true. Camps are a way to keep youth engaged and active – both mentally and physically – while not in school. And most of all, they can help both parents and their children have enjoyable, stress-free summers.

Checking In:
The Casablanca Hotel By Lisa Loverro I’m sure most of you can sympathize with the love/hate relationship I experience with Time Square. I love attending Broadway shows but hate the massive crowds of tourists converging in the area. And while why they would want to visit the crossroads of the world, I’ve always been hesitant to recommend a stay at one of Time Square’s The Casablanca Hotel, on West 43rd street, however, offers a very boutique experience and as the saying goes, location, location, location…it can’t be beat. It’s a small, hidden gem with just 48 rooms and a stone’s throw away from the bright lights of Broadway. It quietly exists among its towering neighbors and, more importantly, the friendly staff and casual vibe will have you wondering if you are, indeed, in New York City. Resident February 2012
Upon arrival, an energetic doorman eagerly escorted me over to the front desk for a quick check in by a welcoming reception staff. The hotel’s café, aptly named Rick’s, is and have a cup of coffee, watch TV or just start a conversation with other guests. The rooms, small but adequate, are all you’ll need for a good night’s sleep with comfy beds and Ceiling fans, mosaics and wooden blinds pay homage to the theme of the hotel in a delicate way, not forcing the point to death. Sound proofed windows minimize any noise echoing from the outside world and the hotel key. If visiting during the summer months, there’s a roof deck and if you’re lucky enough to score a room for New Year’s Eve, you’ll
be able to almost reach out and touch the dropping ball. The Casablanca also serves complimentary cocktail reception including a various selection of wines and cheeses…a rarity for city hotels. And for an added bonus guests receive free passes to the New York Sports club just up the street. So next time a friend or family member decides to visit the Big Apple, especially if about recommending a Times Square stay because when it comes to Times Square, not all hotels are created equal. There’s the large, the seedy and the Casablanca…a stay they’ll fondly remember as time goes by.

Theallet and Veronica Webb Designer and Her Muse Sophie By Hillary Latos More than just your classic fashion designer and model as muse tale, Sophie Theallet and Veronica Webb began their lifelong friendship as teenagers at the beginning of their careers in Paris. Veronica was Azzedine Alaia’s model and muse and Sophie was the designer. Prior to launching her eponymous line in 2007, Sophie mastered the design process from the kings of couture, namely Jean Paul Gaultier and Alaia. Since French aesthetic, combined with a striking use of color on sensual silhouettes, which were met with praise and recognition from fashion insiders and garnered the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award in 2009. To this day, Veronica symbolizes the woman Sophie loves to dress, and Sophie’s creations embody the effortless and timeless elegance that Veronica loves to wear. We caught up with the designer and muse in Sophie’s studio as she was preparing her upcoming collection.
NYR: How does Veronica Webb inspire you as your muse? ST: We began in fashion together and were both teenagers. The way Veronica dresses is always chic, she has good taste and her attitude is effortless. She also has a strong personality and she’s extremely beautiful and smart. For me, she represents the lady I love to dress. VW: My mother always made me clothes as a kid and I was already used to it. ST: She never complained and she would know exactly what a woman wants and she would play with it, she really knew what it was like to have really well done clothes. VW: Our lives are also similar, we’re both running businesses, we have kids, we work late, we want to look professional, look sexy, have a great wardrobe, and we need to savemoney to put back into our businesses and put our kids through private school. Quality, versatility, durability are all big issues. NYR: What are some of the lessons you learned from

HOW TO DRESS LIKE AN EDITOR
W
ith the Fall 2012 New York Fashion week just around the corner all eyes will be on the catwalk as editors scout next season’s top trends, silhouettes and must have accessories. Though catwalk fashion can sometimes be conceptual and not necessarily a literal translation from runway to street, we look to what the editors who live breathe and spend every waking hour in the world of fashion to see what they are wearing to the shows to determine what is on trend, fabulous yet functional and most importantly, essential.
With dozens of shows and presentations to see each day, a tote not only functions as this season’s ‘It’ bag, but it also has to go from day to night and organize a full day’s make up touch ups, etc. Front row editrixes usually opt for a classic power tote by Chanel or Hermes or an exotic by Nancy Gonzalez, while junior fashion editors can be spotted with edgier styles in by Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang or Celine.
While Wall Streeters have made billions by perfecting a poker face in their professions, Anna Wintour keeps the fashion world guessing as she whips out her oversized black Chanel sunglasses before every show. Go glam with Chanel’s jewel encrusted shades or opt for a downtown look from Tom Ford’s exaggerated cat eyes. Few things make women swoon more than a sexy pair of heels. However with inclement weather, editors’ footwear have to be durable enough to wade through snow, slush, rain and bitterly cold weather as they dash from show to show. Ditch the stilettos and opt for this season’s slimmed version of the chunky heel that gives the stability of a wedge and a Giuseppe Zanotti.
A welcome trend that we saw continue from Fall to Spring and hopefully on to Fall again is the use of color whether it was a neon bright or a rich jewel tone, color was abound everywhere. Mixed with the usual fashion uniform of black or a neutral, liven up the doldrums of winter with separates or statement jewelry in yellow or coral.

Celebrity Street Style
It’s what the celebs are wearing By Karen Loftus
February’s a great time to mix and match seasons and styles for city & sea, snow & sand. We’re not out of our winter wares yet and not quite dipping in to our spring flings either. Many of us are playing with the weather wheel heading to frigid locales to get our ski on or escaping winter weather altogether and letting it all hang out, which means it’s a great time to play the fashion field. Grab classic winter wares, seductive and seasonal resort threads or an array of edgy accessories that give any look that necessary fashion pop. It’s what the celebs are wearing. So…strike a pose. If you like to walk your talk, step out with Reduce, Reuse and Recycle style uses reclaimed denim to make trendy jeans for both sides of the gender fence. loosely translated as the voice in Italian, is appropriately named for the stunningly beautiful room and perfectly delicious food that is on display at the restaurant. Brining haute Italian to a wide audience it has quickly become a perennial favorite of the in-the-know Manhattan crowd and those who wish to be like us. With a ringing clarity of focus (it could be said A Voce is the Joan Sutherland of restaurants), it is serving up some of the most fascinating and delectable Italian fare that I’ve had it a long time.
To name everything we ate would require a level of dedication and time on the part of the reader as to make was heavenly. We started with a Carpaccio of thinly sliced prime beef, asiago, cracked mustard seeds and capers; a
roasted trumpet royal mushrooms, fonduta, mache and hazelnuts. That beef from the Carpaccio was almost (ALMOST!) alive as if it was mooing – so fresh and rare was it that it matched exceedingly well with the sharpness off the asiago and vinegary taste of the capers. We also loved the fatty goodness of the pancetta with its culinary revelation. Moving onto the pastas, for which the restaurant is rightly known; and we loved the way in which each dish was prepared and presented. The sagne all Amatriciana made with hand-crafted pasta, bacon San Marzano tomatoes, pecorino and marjoram and gnocchi with squash, brown butter, amaretti and pumpkin seeds. The sagne was nicely al dente and was melded well with the tangy tomatoes, fatty bacon and crunchiness of the pumpkin seeds. But perfect that I contemplated writing a hymn in their honor. Bold, delicious and exotic Italian wines were paired with our dishes and we appreciated the nicely prepared desserts. Mention should also be made of their service which was friendly, knowledgeable and highly professional. Go see for yourself and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!

Center I was sure it was going to be a tourist trap; and littered along the way would be the reputations of critics like mine for trying to describe a place which was sure to be a train wreck. Yet, I couldn’t be more naïve and more dense. Overlooking the picturesque Ice Skating Rink at Rockefeller Center, the view was the perfect accompaniment to a majestic and thoughtful meal. Winner of the prestigious 2007 Ivy Award, the restaurant is a stunning example of the very freshest oceanic delicacies, with ingredient-driven and locally sourced specialties. Continuously ranked among a handful of New York’s top seafood restaurants, the sublime cuisine and sleek, modern setting are highlighted by the spectacular views. Mouth watering creations combined in a beautiful setting made for a perfect evening. I was doubly lucky then that I brought my paramour with me. My dish. So I was praying that the meal was going to be superior. we were enthralled with the innovative cuisine that was light without being chowder with smoked bacon, lobster, shrimp and clams. It was a perfectly balanced soup and a great portent of things to come. We thoroughly enjoyed it! and wasabi-miso vinaigrette. The tuna was fresh (almost as if it was swimming) and we enjoyed the acidity of the wasabi-miso combination and the wonderful crunch from the apple. For an option that was inspired from the land, try the terrine of Berkshire pork and Hudson Valley foie gras. It was almost literally out-of-this-world. Our entrees consisted of the jumbo lump crab cakes with stone-ground mustard sauce and Nantucket Bay scallops with roasted garlic mashed potatoes. Both were divine. Those scallops, miniature pillows of pleasure in our mouths, were succulent in taste and perfectly cooked and the mashed potatoes were light and airy puffs of clouds on our plates. Mention should also be made of the crab cakes which were sweet and meaty and thoroughly consumed.

Amy Cervini’s “Digging Me Digging You”
BLOSSOM DEARIE (1924-2009) sang sophisticated songs in a small, highpitched voice, accompanying herself on keyboards. Amy Cervini has a new album on Anzic Records titled “Digging Me Digging You,” which is a tribute to Dearie. The title comes from the lyric of “Hey John,” a song Dearie wrote for John Lennon. The others are a mix of delightful obscure tunes like “Rhode Island” and Dave Frishberg’s “My Attorney Bernie” and the emotional “Once Upon a Summertime.” Cervini has more of a voice than Dearie but she and the arrangements by Oded Lev-Ari are consistently satisfying. On March 6 & 7, Cervini will appear at 55 Bar with Anat Cohen (clarinet), Joe Magnarelli (trumpet), Jesse Lewis (guitar), Matt Aronoff (bass) and Matt Wilson (drums). Mind” (on RKM Music). The Venezuelan jazzman penned 8 of the 11 tunes. The CD contains a propulsive version of Joe Henderson’s “Tetragon” and a ballad, “Dance of musical encounter between Perdomo and the great drummer Jack DeJohnette and they obviously click. Perdomo will appear at Jazz Standard on Feb. 23rd. “Snakeoil” is Tim 17th, Berne will appear at Rubin Museum. Enrico Rava’s “Tribe” (also on ECM) is a mellow affair, with the trumpeter’s quintet with trombonist Gianlucca Petrella, pianist Giovanni Guidi, bassist Gabriele Evangelista and drummer Fabrizio Sferra. Rava and the band will appear at Birdland from Feb. 21-25. British jazz singer Claire Martin has made a remarkable series of recordings on Linn Records and now they are being released on CD by Naxos Records. “Too Darn Hot” is a stunning example of her talent at mixing older material (such as Something’s Coming from Bernstein’s “West Side Story”), and newer pieces (e.g., Joni Mitchell’s “Blue Motel Room”). When she sings “When I Fall In Love,” she sounds as if she means every syllable. Drummer Paul Motian entered the jazz pantheon in 1961, when he recorded live at the Village Vanguard with pianist Bill Evans and bass player Scott LaFaro. He died in December and coincidentally a 6-CD box set has just been issued containing all his recordings for the Black Saint/Soul Note label. The set conveys the range of his playing from duets with pianists Enrico Pieranunzi and Paul Bley, to trio sides with Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano, to quintets with Lovano and Frisell plus the late American Indian saxophonist Jim Pepper. The box contains the complete albums The Story Of Maryam, Jack Of Clubs, Misterioso, Notes, One Time Out, and Flux & Change.

Hits and Misses on and off-Broadway By Barry Bassis WHEN “On A Clear Day You Can See Forever” opened on Broadway in 1965, the musical received praise for its songs by composer Burton Lane and lyricist Alan Jay Lerner and a star turn by Barbara Harris in a double role. The down-side was Lerner’s unwieldy script, which involved reincarnation. In the original, a young woman named Daisy seeks the help of a psychiatrist to cure her smoking addiction. Under hypnosis, Daisy reveals a prior incarnation named Melinda, with whom the doctor falls in love. In the new version, directed by Michael Mayer with a script by Peter Parnell, the patient is a gay man who in his prior life is still Melinda, albeit now a 1940’s jazz singer rather than an 18th century English woman. Thus, the central role in the original version is split between David (David Turner) and Melinda (Jessie Mueller), making the psychiatrist (Harry Connick Jr.) the focus. Connick is immensely likeable but the script is

the idea that the shrink obsessed with his new patient might be gay. (He’s not.) The score still shines, with added songs Wedding.” The best jazz singing comes from Mueller (“Ev’ry Night at Seven”). It would have made more sense to make minor revisions in the original script and give the double role to her. “On A Clear Day You Can See Forever” is running at the St. James Theatre (246 W. 44th St.; 212-239-6200). The musical “Bonnie & Clyde” that had a short run on Broadway is about the couple who went on a robbery/murder spree during the Depression. Although Frank Wildhorn seems to be the main target of critics’ ire, his music (uniformly well sung by the cast) happens to be the best aspect of the work. On the other hand, Don Black’s lyrics are often as arid as a Texas drought. The script by Ivan Menchell attempts to make the two title characters sympathetic, beginning when they are children, but fails to make them interesting. Bonnie longs to be a celebrity, like the movie stars she admires, and can’t resist bad-boy Clyde. Unlike the from impotence—that was apparently musical brings out the fact that, as a youth,

Clyde was abused in prison. The romantic aspects of the script are undercut by the onstage bloodletting and video projections showing the actual victims as well as Bonnie and Clyde’s bodies, errors of judgment by director-choreographer Jeff Calhoun; actually, there is not much in the way of dancing. In the title roles, Jeremy Jordan and Laura Osnes are more successful vocally than dramatically. The talented stars have impressive track records—she in “Grease” and “Anything Goes” and he in “Newsies” (on its way to Broadway) and will no doubt have better chances to show off their talents. Melissa van der Schyff as Blanche (the wife of Clyde’s brother Buck) is more convincing as a rural Texan than either of the leads and her duet with Osnes is the musical highpoint of the show. “Iron Curtain” is an off-Broadway musical that provided more fun than most of the new uptown extravaganzas. The show, which had a brief run at Baruch Performing Arts Center, takes place during the 1950s. The plot is a sort of combination of the

Bob Hope/Bing Crosby “Road” pictures and “Ninotchka.” The two buddies, Murray and Howard (David Perlman and Todd Alan Johnson), are unsuccessful American songwriters, who are kidnapped by the Soviets to write songs for a Communist musical. There are plenty of laughs in Susan DiLallo’s book and Peter Mills’ lyrics; Stephen Weiner’s music is enjoyable, even if, as the two main character s comment during the show, they are not quite on the level of Adler and Ross (of “Pajama Game”). Especially praiseworthy among the cast of 15 were Maria Couch as Shirley (Howard’s girlfriend), the charming Jenn Gambatese as Masha (a chorus girl/KGB agent), and Bobbi Kotula as Hildret Heinz (an East German director with a taste for S&M). The script has puns galore from the name of the hotel (Lapov Luxury) to a play on Kurt Weill’s name. Cara Reichel directed with trimming. “Lysistrata Jones” is an example of a show that was a success downtown (where it was staged in a gym) but struck out when it moved to Broadway (the Walter Kerr Theater). The musical, directed and choreographed by Dan Knechtges, is a “Lysistrata,” in which the women withheld sexual favors to convince their Douglas Carter Beane’s script, the tactic is the same but the aim is to induce the boys to win basketball games. Or, as
the cheerleaders sing, ““No more givin’ it up till you give up givin’ it up.” While turning the anti-war satire into a show that’s closer to “Debbie Does Dallas: The Musical” may be trivializing the source, there are still ample charms: Beane’s wit, Lewis Flinn’s catchy score, zippy choreography and a talented and energetic cast headed by Patti Murin in the title role and Liz Mikel as both the narrator Hetaira and the madam of the local brothel, the Eros Motor Lodge. Handel wrote “Rodelinda” in 1725 but the opera seria didn’t reach the Metropolitan Opera

repertory through the clout of Renée Fleming, and she returned in the revival this season. The plot is cumbersome but after another. Naturally, the title character has a workout—displaying mother’s love, mourning for her supposedly dead husband, anger at the villain who seeks her affections, etc.—and Fleming manages to combine vocal virtuosity with convincing was countertenor Andreas Scholl, who has made a string of unforgettable recordings. Perhaps he lacks the power for a theater as large as the Met or he was having an off-night. Chinese bass-baritone Shenyang. Stephanie Blythe as Eduige (Rodelinda’s romantic rival) was a powerhouse in her four arias. Conductor Harry Bicket, who led the Met Opera To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Broadway production of “Dancing at the adult Michael Evans (Michael McMonagle), who also plays himself as a seven-year a schoolteacher. High-spirited Maggie (Jo Kinsella) keeps house while Agnes (Rachel Pickup) and Rose (Aedín Moloney) earn money by hand-knitting. Chris (Annabel Hagg) is Michael’s unmarried mother, Gerry (Kevin Collins) is the hapless father and Uncle Jack (John Tyrell) has come home to die after 25 years as a priest in a leper colony in Africa. Each character is unforgettable in Charlotte Moore’s beautiful production.

Those Baby Boomers, destroyed what was great about music – its versatility, its cleverness, its joie de vivre; instead opting for authenticity and transparency above all else.
I’m constantly bombarded and my space intruded by the noise of music which I do not know and cannot relate to. It’s gotten so bad that I’m not sure if I’m actually part of my own generation. Rap, R&B, Dance and any other form of music in which the beat is too fast or the words unintelligible, is not Maybe I am a product of a different time; and my maternal grandmother and father have imparted and imprinted on me a sense of what music was at in the past. My dad, a lyricist by trade, taught me the importance of words; and he often criticized others for sloppy and nonsensical writing. Add to that my grandmother’s devotion to Italian opera and the standard’s of the 1920’s and you have in me a perfect specimen for the rejection of today’s music makers. A question: why does the music have to be played so loudly? have to bash it over our heads, as if to render us unconscious. I blame the Beatles. It is in them that we see a change in mentality, perhaps only a small one, but it is there, nonetheless.

What we need in this country is a musical Renaissance – another Cole Porter, if you please. Gone are the days when the ballad was king and the chorus was actually used. Now we have the proletariat forcing upon us their musical choices, instead of the other way around. I think of a line of a song my father wrote: Where has all the shine gone? I love the way in which he sets up the lines, building a crescendo of feeling. Having been left by his wife, the singer asks: “Why did you feel the need to roam - to leave my love your roots and home, which you knew best still need their nest”. Those words form a perfect sentiment and showcase a thoughtful way of representing strong and passionate feelings. Though I did not live in that time, I feel deeply connected and wish that I had been around to experience Judy Garland’s live performances, Ethel Merman’s stage presence or Arturo Toscanini conducting a masterpiece. So I’ll leave you with this, music of yesteryear ‘S wonderful! ‘S marvelous!
