GIVE LOVE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Photo by Andrew Werner | AndrewWernerPhotography.com

I

t’s finally December and time to celebrate what is my favorite month of the year when the holidays are fully upon us when New York transforms itself into a veritable winter wonderland.

This month we chose to spotlight the Holiday House which embodies the spirit of the holidays that provided the perfect backdrop for our fashion editorial and cover shoot. Renowned interior designers took over two sprawling mansions in Soho and transformed each room into their own rendition of what the holidays mean to them. Take the time to visit the Holiday House that is open through January which has not only raised awareness about breast cancer but is ultimately a celebration of life and a reminder that each day should be treated as a holiday. We had the chance to catch up with the darling of the fashion world, Ian Mellencamp who has starred in bold faced fashion campaigns such as Tom Ford, Diesel, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and the Gap amongst others and is destined for rock stardom with his sophomore album debut. Holidays are synonymous with travel whether the destination is sun, snow or even undiscovered jungles in an exotic locale. This month we ventured to Ecuador and the colonial capital of Quito that is a treasure trove of history and culture. With temperatures dropping we were also dreaming of venturing to the warm Caribbean waters and spotlighted Bonaire, Turks & Caicos, Barbados, the BVI, and the Dominican Republic. With New Year’s Eve around the corner we rounded up some of the best cities to ring in 2017, such as Mexico City, Milan, London and of course New York City. As December can be a monthlong celebration of revelry take the time to explore New York’s gastronomic experience while taking in the holiday sites as we showcased some of the best dining spots in the city. Keeping in the spirit of giving we put together our mega gift guide for everyone on your list whether the hostess because it’s not joy that makes us grateful, but rather gratitude that makes us joyful. No matter where you are this season, 2016 was a wonderful year, and as it comes to a close this is a time to reflect on all the gifts we should be thankful for with plenty to look forward to as we ring in 2017.

It was rather endearing.’’ George Wayne’s second book - a ‘’quasi-memoir’’ titled ‘’SIMPLY GEIRGEOUS’’ will be published by HarperCollins in the Summer of 2017.

ONTRIBUTORS Oscar D. Caballero has been a makeup and beauty expert for over 15 years. He was a senior makeup artist at the Victoria’s Secret flagship store, and was part of the team for the runway show in 2013. He honed his skills alongside celebrity makeup artist Sue Devitt—who’s defined Sarah Jessica Parker’s looks on the red carpet—and Oscar managed Devitt’s beauty line at Barneys. He’s worked with the luxury skincare line Natura Bisse for over ten years (a Beyonce favorite), and as a result learned the rare art of using products to accentuate a woman’s natural beauty—not cover it up. Oscar’s work has been seen on four billboards in Times Square (for Taku Saki), in the Ralph Lauren Midnight Romance ad campaign, and on the faces of Miss Universe Gabriella Isler, Miss Universe Paulina Vega, and several of the Real Housewives. He’s an artist in every sense of the word.

Dion Moore has been a staple in the beauty industry for over 20 years. With a passion for high end editorial styling his work has appeared on countless magazine covers, fashion shows, TV shows and commercials. His dedication to the craft has made him a New York favorite among celebrities, models, socialites, and his beloved clientele. When he’s not busy behind the scenes you can find the talented Mr. Moore behind the chair styling some of New York’s premier residents at the esteemed Angelo David Salon located at 420 Madison Avenue. 212 883 6620.

ATTORNEYS NEED SOLID FINANCIAL ADVICE TOO By Sage Wealth Management at Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management

While $160,000 in Manhattan certainly is a substantial starting salary, you should not forget what may be a heavy burden of student loans from law school.[*] Developing a budget and plan for staying on track with payments is key to your future financial success. It’s also a wise move to put money aside for unexpected expenses and emergencies. A basic rule of thumb is to put three to six months’ worth of living expenses into an account that is easily accessible.[*]

S

o here you are, well on your way in your legal career, carving out a successful private practice or charting your path toward a partnership. Just look at Harvey Spector, the hotshot TV attorney on Suits, and his fictional firm’s managing partner, Jessica Pearson[1]. Their fancy offices, high pay and tempting perks certainly look enticing. Attorneys on Suits frequently dine at the best restaurants, hop down to Atlantic City in tuxedos, sit in front-row seats for shows, and live in luxe Manhattan apartments.[*] Whatever your goals, it is important to start planning now to reach them. Consider your discretionary income: Do you live lavishly, purchase a big house, own several imported cars, and take exotic vacations? Or do you delay aspects of this grand lifestyle for a time and put aside funds for the future of your children and your own retirement? There is no single answer to that question. There can be a wide difference in salary among lawyers, depending on the chosen legal field, as well as the geographic region. First year lawyers in Manhattan may start out earning a salary of $160,000 versus the national median of $135,000.[*] In contrast, the average pay for lawyers in other areas – take Albany[*] or Vermont[*] – may be significantly less. And, in ad-

26 | resident.com

dition to an above average salary, many law firms in Manhattan offer periodic bonus and profit-sharing payments. This can make financial planning more difficult because the “extra” compensation is not guaranteed – nor is the amount. Research shows that lawyers typically do save for retirement.[*] Lawyers as a group tend to have solid 401(k) plans with low fees and high average balances, but it is important to remember that there may be risks associated with contributions to plans sponsored by your firm.[*] Even at well-run firms, there could be reasonable concern over the extent of funding for retirement plans and the willingness of younger partners to support the plan.[*] Still, you should invest in retirement as early as is feasible. If you continue to grow in your career, and your income grows with you, you might well become accustomed to a lifestyle that could be difficult to maintain in retirement without proper financial planning.[*] The further you are from retirement, the greater the risk level you may be willing to accept in your portfolio, as a market downturn early in a career still will allow plenty of time for recovery before the assets are needed. And remember that not all eggs should go into the same basket – a balanced and diversified portfolio is key.[*]

Do note your individual legal requirements: taxes, estate planning and even your will. While many aspects of financial planning apply to most professions, lawyers have their own niches, especially regarding tax matters. Failure to fully understand income and employment tax rates could be costly to a practicing lawyer.[*] You might consider consulting with a tax professional on these matters. You’ve worked hard to succeed in your profession. Now apply that due diligence and solid research to your finances. That’s the surest way to seasons and seasons of success, just like on Suits. BEHIND THE VELVET ROPE DECEMBER 2016

By Joe Alexander | With Photographs by Patrick McMullan

Doctor Strange Fans of Oscar nominated Benedict Cumberbatch, amusingly known as “Cumberbitches” will go gaga over his role as the sexy Dr. Stephen Strange who travels to the Himalayan Mountains to find himself and turns into the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange. Somewhere along the road, he acquires a magic red cape that allows him to defy gravity and logic. Think comic book fun! Benedict who is a lot better in this rollercoaster of a movie with a mystic twist than he was on Saturday Night Live confessed “I’ve never done a lead role in a film this big, in a franchise this big; I wanted to know what the toy box was like.“ Tilda Swinton delivers a believable performance as The Ancient One even if everything she does, including time travel, defies reality. Swinton is already dreaming of another payday saying, “I’ve dropping hints about a prequel.” Their co-star Rachel McAdams who plays Night Nurse said “I’m a little funny when it comes to blood and guts. My mom’s a nurse which is probably why I became an actress”

Inferno Inferno, the third film in Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code series is a mystery thriller you don’t want to miss. Tom Hanks plays renowned symbologist Robert Langdon who follows a trail of clues tied to the ultimate medieval poet Dante Alighieri. Hanks and the picture perfect Felicity Jones are a good match but I don’t want to spoil the plot, so just go see it when you feel like escaping from your daily routine. Hanks said, “To be able to do this in places like Florence and Venice; it was a damn good time. I’m the luckiest man in the world.”

Hacksaw Ridge

Sophie Hunter and Benedict Cumberbach @ Doctor Strange

Mel Gibson makes his Hollywood and directional come back in Hacksaw Ridge the best war movie since Schindler’s List. This true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss played by Andrew Garfield, who I predict will get an Oscar nomination. This is a combination date picture and seat grabber form beginning to end. Garfield dished on Gibson: saying, “He says he rarely enjoys making a movie, but I don’t buy it. It just looks like he’s having a whale-of-a-time.” Vince Vaughn and Teresa Parker also deliver strong performances. Among the VIPs at the NYC opening were Gerard Butler, Christian Slater, Calvin Klein, Dr. Kenneth Mark, Kelly Bensimon and stem cell guru Dr. Christopher Calapai.

Jack Reacher Tom Cruise on his character Jack Reacher “He is a badass, tough character. Who’s going to confront something, straight on; go right at it.” If only that description was true of Cruise’s performance, it isn’t. Cruise tries hard but falls short in this new installment of Jack Reacher, which is long on car chases and crashes but any episode of Homeland, House of Cards or Kiefer Sutherland in Designated Survivor is better than this mess of a movie. Speaking of TV shows I highly recommend Narcos, if you are intrigued by drugs, the CIA and Pablo Escobar.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS

STAYING HEALTHY WHILE TRAVELING By Mike Clancy Training

E

ating right and exercising is a daily effort that works best with routine practice and consistency, but how does someone look great during a vacation? Vacations are great for rest and relaxation, but can be difficult for someone to put in effort to improve their health. It’s unrealistic to eat clean and exercise everyday, but there are ways to keep your hard work from fading away while still enjoying the elements of rest, relaxation, and indulgences.

Take A Fish Oil Supplement Every Day First thing I did was bring a weekend supply of fish oils to ensure I was able to offset the abundance of Omega-6 fatty acids that comprised most of the foods during this weekend. Quick Review: Omega-6 is a fatty acid that causes natural inflammation within the body. Since the majority of foods consumed from restaurants contain omega-6 fats in the oils, there is usually an imbalance of healthy fats in our diets. Fish oils are an easy, guaranteed way to

50 | resident.com

reduce the inflammation and also help boost your metabolism (Yes, a balanced diet of healthy will reduce your stored body fat). Even if you eat fish often, you can’t be certain of the source and how it was prepared. Taking a fish oil supplement every morning is a sure way to keep your body lean.

Exercise For 10 Minutes Before Breakfast Vacations are meant to be relaxing and enjoyable. If you’re not much of an exerciser, consider setting aside 10 minutes in the mornings to open up your body and calm your mind. The best part is you’ll feel noticeably better throughout your day by having exercised for a few minutes in the morning. Exercising is one of the best ways to prevent bloat, fatigue, and stiffness. A series of floor-based exercises will not only strengthen your muscles, but they will bring out more flexibility and blood flow to your joints. Try doing 2 sets of: cat/camel poses, hip bridges,

leg lifts, bent knee crunches, cobras, and push-ups for 30 seconds each.

Prioritize Protein & Vegetables Conscious eating is one of the most important habits I teach my clients. When it comes time to clean your plate, strategically choose when you eat which foods. First and foremost, consume protein and vegetables (a meal is “incomplete” without fiber and/or protein). Since these macro and micronutrients are necessary for a strong and lean body, you don’t want to wait at the end to eat them. After you eat the important stuff, the rest of the meal is your call. If you want to indulgence, enjoy guilt-free knowing you’ve provided your body with the necessary tools it needs to rebuild, repair, and replenish. To top it off, protein and vegetables increase satiation, so you’re likely to eat less without feeling restricted. Win-Win.

Although a very successful male model star in demand for iconic brands such as Calvin Klein, Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger, and Ralph Lauren for which he has starred in many global advertising campaigns. Music is the true food of his love. His sophomore EP, Free AF is a streaming hit on various social media platforms. Ian played at Farm Aid 2016 outside Washington, D.C. earlier this year alongside Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Dave Matthews, and John Mellencamp. The emerging rock God and his drummer, Daniel Sousa, will play at Mercury Lounge on December 17 and as such, he sits to talk the talk with Resident magazine Special Correspondent--George Wayne for an exclusive and revealing interview like none before this...Music historians may very well come to acknowledge Ian Mellencamp as the 21st century answer to early David Bowie... GEORGE WAYNE: I love those turquoise bracelets you are wearing. Where did you get them? IAN MELLENCAMP: From my father Joe [Mellencamp}. He gave them to me. They’re

very cool..huh? Very rock & roll.

drag? What is it?

GW: Joe Mellencamp, big brother to the famous John Mellencamp?

IM: It’s not quite drag. The last gig I did, I had a hoop skirt on. I like fashion, so if I see a nice piece I want to wear it. Even if it is a cool dress, I want to wear it.

IM: Yes, he is the eldest and my Uncle John is the second eldest of the five. I have two aunts from that side of the family. GW: What made you think that you could come to New York City and be a star? IM: I always wanted to move to either New York or L.A. because I wanted to be around creative individuals who were open-minded. Individuals that were pushing the boundaries of society and being on the edge of it all. Folk on the forefront. GW: And do you think that you push the boundaries? IM: I try. GW: I have never seen one of your gigs, though you have always invited me. I won’t miss the next one though, because I hear you like to perform in dresses! What’s that about? IM: I sometimes perform in dresses. I just love clothing! [Laughs]. GW: Okay, so it’s a fetish. Do you consider it

GW: Would you consider yourself--sexually fluid? IM: Yeah, yeah. I try to be open... GW: What was your first job here in the concrete jungle of New York City? IM: It was that first job, that Calvin Klein job where I met you for the first time. GW: Wow! You are right! I didn’t realize that was the first time you actually came to New York! IM: Yeah! Steven Meisel flew me to that set. I wasn’t even living in New York then. GW: Wow! That’s when I first met you? IM: Yeah, I was commuting from Ohio to do that. GW: Yes. it was on the set of the second CKOne fragrance campaign! I was hired as a Creative Consultant by Baron & Baron to prep you kids

for the TV commercials! IM: Yeah, that was the big stuff and what got me started [as a male model]. It was because I was a musician. Funny, how it has come full circle. They wanted musicians, and dancers and artists and stuff, and that is how I was asked to be a part of that. GW: I was always thought you were such a great guy. I love your spirit and your cool Mid-Western values...

GW: What does your famous Uncle John Mellencamp think of your music? IM: He is sort of like my Dad, in the sense that they want me to follow my dreams and do my thing, to do it for myself. Nothing was ever just handed to me. No record deal or such. I worked hard for it. GW: Do you believe in unicorns?

IM: Likewise...

IM: Yeah because I feel like I am a unicorn. I believe in fairy tales.

GW: You’re just a really, really nice, decent genuine guy. A good kid.

GW: Stop lying! Wow! You really do like fairy tales. What sign are you?

IM: Thanks George.

IM: Gemini.

GW: Would you say that temperament comes from your Mid-Western upbringing?

GW: Well...I made sure to bring my favorite ‘’bible’’ to this interview. It is called ‘Sexual Astrology’ by Martine. So now I am going to read what Martine’s Sexual Astrology says about the Gemini man. And you are going to tell me if this sexual astrologist is on point--or not.

IM: My arms are sensitive for some reason. GW: Wow! That’s what it continues to say...’’Try running your hands lightly over the Gemini’s arms. Even touching his arms will raise his goose bumps...’’ That’s what it says! And there is more....’’ IM: I am very sensitive, very sensitive to touch. GW: And then it says about the Gemini male sex life...’’You won’t finding him breathing heavily... he plays a dual role...one making love and one watching. And then listen to this...’’he prefers sex with the light one...’’ IM: Not always, but sometimes true. I always want to take a lot at the merchandise. GW: Who is the girl you dating now?

IM: It’s that Ohio thing. I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio... GW: I guess they call Ohio, the swing state for a reason.

IM: Well, it is still sort of new, but I like her a lot, we will see. I don’t want to talk about her because it is still very new. GW: It goes on to say...’’Cunnilingus is not especially the Gemini male forte.’’

IM: Okay..cool. Go for it. IM: Not true.

IM: [Laughs]....Okay... GW: Well, that is my experience anyway. Ohio studs tend to be sexually evolved. I say that from personal experience. IM: I have a good family. My Dad always told me to work hard, to be a hard worker. My Mum always told me to be honest. My mother always had a way of talking to people and making them open up. She can talk to anyone.

GW: ‘’He is always in transit from one place to another, from one person to another, one vocation to another, restless, nervous. He is not content to live on day at a time but to try to compress a week, a month into one day... IM: There is some truth to that. GW: Not much? I will continue... ‘’The Gemini male loves to travel. He is a hard worker, but only for a short stretch. He is unusually intelligent and has a clever gift of gab. ‘’ Yes, or no?

GW: Talk a bit about your music. IM: That is one one side of my Gemini self. IM: It’s rock & roll...psychedelic, electronic rock & roll. My new EP is called Free AF and it’s five songs. It kind of came about because I had just left my modeling agency, I just left my record label and so I was free. I was free as f*** and so I called the EP - Free AF. I was a solo agent and the inspiration came to me. I was as free as a bird. I looked at this as the moment to put my music out there completely free of all restrictions. I was just wanted to be free and open.

68 | resident.com

GW: Now that we got that out of the way! Listen to this! ‘’Because he is pulled in two directions--the Gemini male has a tendency towards bisexuality.’’ And then it goes on...’’Some, while retaining their heterosexual status become transvestites by satisfying their duality of desire by wearing woman’s clothes and makeup.’’ Look! That’s what it says. I am not making this up! IM: Wow! Now you got me! [Laughs]! GW: It’s GW’s ‘’bible’’ -- Sexual Astrology by Martine. The first reference point for GW whenever I meet someone of keen interest and desire.

GW: You’re right! We have to remember the Gemini has that split personality.

IM: What sign are you?

IM: That’s right, because I am both introverted and extroverted--the extremes...I’m not fully out and I am not fully in...

GW: Sagittarius. You know, half-man and halfhorse. [Laughs]. And you Ian Mellencamp are loved and respected in these parts--always!

GW: ‘’The Gemini man likes to have his fingers sucked slowly, one at a time...’’ True?

Thank you for this great tete-a-tete!

DONATELLA ARPAIA

IMBIBE

The head judge of Iron Chef America always had food for in her DNA. “Growing up in a food family, my mother cooked fresh meals every day and meatballs every Sunday.” Studying artisanal pizza making in Italy, Arpaia hopes that through Prova, she is able to execute food the way she knows should be executed. Meshing the best of both worlds, Prova’s pizzas follow the Neapolitan style in a bid to retain the pizza’s flavors yet are sliced in the Roman style. Allowing their dough to rise over the course of 36 hours, Arpaia ensures that her pizzas are “filling but very light.” Speaking of her favorite dishes on the menu, Arpaia highlights Prova’s hand cut spaghetti with tomatoes because the sauce “uses tomatoes that are grown on volcanic soil, they are not acidic but very sweet and delicious.” While spaghetti paired with tomatoes may not stand out on the menu, Arpaia states that “simple dishes done with the highest ingredients are a chef’s definition of perfection.”

W

ith a passion for food, American restaurateur and television personality Donatella Arpaia, always knew she wanted to be in the hospitality industry and started her journey at the Italian Culinary Academy. Already a proud owner of multiple restaurants in NYC, Arpaia recently opened Prova Pizzabar, situated in Grand Central Station. Unsatisfied with the low quality food served at pizzerias, Arpaia spotted a need in the market for an upscale pizza restaurant. Cooperating with Giuseppe Manco, Arpaia has introduced an award-winning menu to the city of New York With the ideal concept in mind, Arpaia set out to find the perfect location for her pizzabar. “I wanted to launch in a strong iconic location so I bid for a space in Grand Central.” Arpaia was ecstatic to find out she outbid several hundred people to open her restaurant in Grand Central. “It is a dream to open Prova in one of the most architecturally stunning and iconic locations in New York City. As one of the leading tourist destinations, it is certainly a great way to spread the name of my company.”

As a working mother and consummate hostess, Arpaia understands the growing pains of getting dinner on the table. Through Kitchen Solutions, Arpaia has provided working mothers with a “fast solution that does not taste fast.” As the winner of the New York Food & Wine Festival’s Meatball Madness competition, Arpaia’s Kitchen Solutions offers meatballs and a variety of delicious sauces. As a woman who wears many hats, she realized that as a hostess many of the options at your disposal for hosting dinner parties “were limited or too expensive and impractical or lowquality and lacking in style,” which inspired her to set up Frontgate. Through her entertainment line, Arpaia offers beautiful, modern and elegant plateware that is also durable. Initially unsure of the receptions she would receive, Arpaia was overjoyed to know that her entertainment line was completely sold out. A head judge on one of America’s most established reality television shows, a successful restauranteur and budding businesswoman, Arpaia is certainly a force to be reckoned with. donatellaarpaia.com

During lunch this luxurious three-story restaurant located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan turns into a power dining scene. Appetizers such as jumbo lump crab cake and lobster bisque are made from the freshest seafood. But the star of the menu has to be the filet medallions paired with chateau mashed potatoes, thin green beans and doused in red wine demi-glace. The restaurant is a perfect locale for a sumptuous pre-and-post Broadway holiday dining experience. Due to its close proximity to New York’s iconic locations such as Times Square, Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall, customers can ease into the holiday season by admiring the Christmas tree and ice skating rink before walking through the doors to eat like a king. To celebrate the holidays with fellow New Yorkers, the steakhouse is offering a Christmas and Thanksgiving dinner menu. Thanksgiving dinner staples such as a slow roasted turkey breast stuffed with

sweet onion apple sausage paired with mashed potatoes or chateau potations, thin green beans, gravy and cranberry relish and pumpkin cheesecake can be found on the menu. During

Christmas, guests can enjoy plates of cheesesteak egg rolls or give a swing at the holiday cocktails such as the white chocolate candy can martini and choco-late eggnog martini. On a nightly basis, the restaurant’s menu offers appetizers such as fire roasted artichoke or ahi tacos made with tuna tartare mashed with avocado and spicy citrus mayo. While a great burger or steak might be the menu’s highlight, customers can have a go at the restaurant’s seared salmon fillet paired

IMBIBE beef is key to developing the superior flavor of Bobby Van’s’ steaks, Jermin says, which they do “the old fashioned way”. Once the team carefully selects well-raised and well-marbled steak, they age it in a specially-designed, humidity-controlled room for up to 28 days, which tenderizes it and enriches the flavor. Prime beef aside, the kitchen import the majority of their seafood from overseas. “If you want to serve the best, you have to source and buy the best,” Jermin says. The tuna is flown in from the Maldives, the Branzino comes from Spain, and salmon from Scotland. Locally, Bobby Van’s seafood supplier has 30 boats in the water providing the kitchen with the freshest fish and shellfish daily. The restaurant offers guests a wide variety of dining options outside of prime beef and seafood, including supremely-prepared pastas and wood-fired pizza.

BOBBY VAN’S STEAKHOUSE Excellence in True Steakhouse Dining

B

obby Van’s Steakhouse has earned its place as a venerable New York institution, thanks in part to a continued commitment to cooking techniques perfected years ago by the founding fathers of New York steakhouse cuisine. Celebrating its 47th Anniversary in 2016, Bobby Van’s grew from its original home in Bridgehampton, NY, and now includes a repertoire of nine fine restaurants that offer the refined style of a classic New York City steakhouse. A quintessential steakhouse, Bobby Van’s is at the roots of the New York steakhouse family tree, with strong employee connections to original famed eateries. It is restaurants like Bobby Van’s that have inspired a legion of imitators, but Bobby Van’s still shines as a premier authentic steakhouse. When restaurateur and Chef Robert Dick-

ert - the great-nephew of steakhouse legend Peter Luger - joined the Bobby Van’s team in 1996, he brought with him a wealth of family knowledge and tradition. These traditions of quality food and superior customer service are still the hallmark of Bobby Van’s dining experience today. Dicker remains at Bobby Van’s where he helps to oversee the all-important process of selecting and dry aging the kitchen’s quality prime beef. Executive Chef Craig Jermin, who has also been at the company some 20 years, says the culinary team are passionate about the age-old family techniques that have been passed down for generations. “We are proud of our connection to the Luger tradition and are fiercely dedicated to providing the very best steak in New York City.” The process of dry aging its USDA prime quality

In New York City, where restaurants tend to shine brightly then fade like a show on Broadway, Bobby Van’s Steakhouse has more than passed the test of time. Each night the restaurants pack out with Wall Street tycoons, famous athletes, New York’s political tycoons, celebrities, and others wanting to experience to soak up the elegant atmosphere and impeccable service. Bobby Van opened his first restaurant in Bridgehampton,

New York in the summer of 1969. After two successful decades, Bobby sold this restaurant to a group of four restaurateurs: Joseph Smith, Joe Phair, Rick Passarelli, and Joe Hickey who opened a second Bobby Van’s Steakhouse location in the Helmsley Building on Park Avenue. The Bobby Van’s Family has grown to also include Bobby Van’s Park Avenue on East 46th Street, Bobby Van’s Steakhouse and Grill on Broad Street in the Financial District, Bobby Van’s Grill on East 54th Street, two Times Square locations on West 45th Street and West 50th Street, two Washington D.C. locations, an airport restaurant in JFK’s Terminal 8, and a take-out burger joint called BV’s Burger, which is also located in Times Square. bobbyvans.com

IL FALCO An Italian Gem in L.I.C. By Haiting Tan

T

hough Brooklyn has come into its own as a hotbed for emerging new chefs, Long Island City is quickly becoming the next destination in New York City’s gastronomic scene. One of the forerunners of this culinary movement in this ethnically diverse borough is Il Falco- a long time neighborhood favorite. Just like the diversity of the neighborhood, Chef Segundo Tinishanay and sous chef Bolivar Perez emigrated to NYC in search of the American dream and someday opening up their own restaurant. With previous stints at one of the city’s most revered Italian restaurants, Il Mulino, their talents shine through at this wildly popular and charming neighborhood spot that serves a combination of Northern and Southern Italian cuisine, that’s as authentic as the mother country. Immigrating from Ecuador at the age of 17, Chef Tinishanay has spent the last 30 years working at Il Mulino where he has risen through the ranks to be a chef. When the restaurant opened chains in Miami and Las Vegas, he was responsible for training the staff. Perez worked side by side with Tinishanay for the past two decades. He started as a line cook and worked his way up to become a chef. His list of illustrious customers includes

lectable and delicate sauce to tantalize the palate. After a long day at work, Il Falco is an ideal location to unwind while sipping on a cocktail with colleagues at the striking bar. The restaurant has a prix fixe menu with a three course lunch for an amazingly affordable price of $18.50. WUJI

A Far Cry From the Chop Suey Palace

K

nown for his cutting edge restaurants and bars throughout the world, Jody Pennette of cb5 Hospitality introduced his organic Chinese restaurant, WUJI, to both Westchester County, NY and Greenwich, CT this past year. This latest culinary epiphany from a talent who finds inspiration from his extensive travels across the globe, a passion he shares with his business partner Moodi Zahid, is a “fresher, cleaner incarnation of its original self,” explains Pennette. WUJI offers Chinese food enthusiasts a more modern and fresh approach to this often misrepresented cuisine, while embracing today’s sustainable food culture. The design esthetic has long been a calling card of cb5 destinations. All WUJI locations share the same culinary platform, yet each restaurant’s ambiance and vibe is adapted to the location, both space and address wise. The Greenwich restaurant, the newest location, is Shanghai chic. Bright red Chinese lanterns hang from the vestibule’s ceiling. The space is filled with vintage Chinese fabrics, original artwork, and a massive dragon wall sculpture designed specifically for the space. A black lacquer bar is reminiscent of a high-gloss piano piece with an oversized opium bed mirror displayed between 400-pound Chinese Blue Willow urns.

90 | resident.com

WUJI’s Executive Chef Peter How, a Gold Medal recipient at the 2016 Taiwan World Chef Championship, uses only free-range chicken, pasture raised pork, grass fed beef, wild caught fish, cagefree chicken eggs, Chinatown noodles, and organic vegetables. The talent and the premise sound great. But what becomes of our beloved greasy wok fried dumplings and mystery red sauce laden ribs? The answer is Chinese heritage pork spare ribs basted with a honey plum glaze. There’s no denying the wonderful, slightly gamey, juicy pork flavor in these meaty ribs laced with natural sweetness. Hand-formed, pan-fried dumplings are stuffed with Berkshire pork, cabbage, scallions, and ginger. Bao bao buns, slightly sweet, fluffy steamed buns are filled with natural grass feed beef, crispy onions, and wasabi mayonnaise. Organic lettuce cups come with a generous bowl of wok sautéed white shrimp with ginger, garlic, and cashews and the crackling calamari salad is piled high with frisée, tossed with spicy vinaigrette and topped with tender, fried calamari. Entrées are slightly re-worked to adhere to WUJI’s eco-friendly and flavorful focus. Grass-fed tangerine beef is coated with a natural tangy citrus glaze. Again, the flavor of the meat is left to shine

through, as tasted with the Cantonese crispy skin chicken with toasted garlic and shallots, perfectly carved, with the scrumptious crispy skin left on each and every piece of the juicy meat. Making the ordinary extraordinary, the fried rice has had new life breathed into it. The lobster fried rice is a meal unto itself, prepared with poached fresh lobster, crispy fried rice, egg crepe, ginger, cilantro and an added flavor and texture component of kim chee. WUJI’s beverage program is just as vibrant and innovative as its cuisine. “Couture Cocktails” are handcrafted with organic natural juices and purees. The gratuitous Mai Tai has been reincarnated into The Authentic Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai made with light and dark rum, orange and lime juices, a hint of almond, and of course a fanciful garnish – a potent and pleasing start to a great night. In addition to WUJI’s popular White Pear Sangria, bar selections include select sakes, Pacific Rim beer, and a nicely curated wine list. For Chinese food fans, the fact that someone has devised a way to indulge in this guilty pleasure, minus the guilt, is just pure genius in my book! To top it off, WUJI delivers! www.wujirestaurant.com

LOVE, LIFE, & PIZZA!

Brick + Wood Brings Neapolitan Street Food, Hand-stretched Mozzarella, APN Certified Pizza, and an All-tap Wine Program to Fairfield, CT

I

n the fall of 2014 an exciting new Italian restaurant concept was introduced to Fairfield County. Brick + Wood took an often ordinary food genre and turned it on its heels, offering diners the foods that the Cavalli family grew up with in Italy. Brick + Wood featured a hybrid of Neapolitan Street foods, wood-fired pizza, and mozzarella bar favorites – no chicken parm of spaghetti at this neighborhood Italian restaurant; and for that we are grateful. The Brick + Wood mantra is “Love Life and Pizza” and their pizza is not only loved, it is certified by the Associazone Pizzaiuoli Napoletani (APN), the elite Italian governing body that teaches the 150 year old art of Neapolitan pizza making. Brick + Wood’s pizzaiolos are all certified by this prestigious association, under the tutelage of pizza maestro Roberto Caporuscio of APN America in Manhattan, NY. Fan faves include the Diavola topped with spicy soppressata, garlic, jalapeños and oregano; and the mouthwatering zucchini pancetta white pizza made with ricotta, caramelized onions, roasted zucchini, and crispy pancetta, a unique and addictive flavor and texture combination. Taking things one step further, desserts pizza (yep, a s’mores pizza) and even brunch pizza (potato, bacon, chives, burrata and scrambled eggs – wow!) will make you believer.

92 | resident.com

As the name Brick + Wood implies, much of the interior design is framed by stressed wood and worn Chicago brick with pockets of space throughout filled with stacks of wood that heat the oven. The mosaic tiled Acunto pizza oven (which heats to 900 degrees!) and the butcher block and Calcutta Ciero marble top mozzarella bar are the focal point of the open kitchen, counter seating, and dining room. The archway of the seasonal patio is draped in dangling lights, reminiscent of a Naples street scene. Equally evocative of the Italian street scene is Brick + Wood’s menu. The dining experience begins with a real mozzarella bar where handstretched mozzarella favorites are made to order, never prep-made or over chilled, thus bringing out the best flavor profile of this wonderfully fresh and milky cheese. Must-haves include; burrata with cream and truffle-filled center, served with prosciutto and arugula; girelli, thin mozzarella layered with eggplant, prosciutto, and roasted peppers; and hot smoked mozzarella with speck, basil and olive oil. The Italian street food component is especially exciting as these traditional finger foods are what one might see people eating in the streets or piazzas throughout Italy. Arancini, deep fried risotto

balls, are stuffed with a variety of fillings. A true standout is the pear and gorgonzola version served with a decadent sage brown butter sauce. The loaded baked potato crochette is everything you would hope and dream it to be, as is the panzerotti of fried dough stuffed with salamino, fresh mozzarella and basil, and Nonna’s turkey meatballs with marinara sauce and parmigiana. Don’t let the turkey substitution fool ya. These meatballs are Sunday gravy worthy. In addition to craft cocktails and premium beer selections, Brick + Wood is home to an all-tap wine program, the first of its kind in Connecticut. Skeptics were quickly put at ease as these keg stored, pressure and temperature controlled wine systems are simply a brilliant host for some of the most prestigious wine makers to store and serve their wines from. This method ensures a fresh and flavorful wine from start to finish. You can’t say that about open wine bottles hanging out on a bar shelf, now can you? Just when you thought the world had enough Italian restaurants, Brick + Wood comes along with a fresh idea, further igniting our love of Italian food! lovelifeandpizza.com

CONRADO FALCO Trade Commission of Peru in New York By Aaron Schwartz

Peru Food and Fashion Making an Impact in New York

C

onrado Falco, the Director of the Trade Commission of Peru in New York, is a leading figure in bringing the rich culture of Peru to the United States. He began his career as a reporter, eventually moving up to assistant editor for Peruvian based economic publications, but ultimately realized that kind of job was no longer for him. “I only wanted to write about good things. I didn’t want a job where I criticized people anymore, so I thought, ‘Okay. I should change from a critic to a promoter.’” From there, he began working at ProInversión, Peru’s Investment Promotion Agency, as the head of information and economic studies for nearly ten years before moving on to taking over the New York offices for the Trade Commission. Since being there, he has been focused on bringing the most authentic and exciting aspects of Peruvian culture to America. “Our job here is to make the biggest impact possible by announcing to the US based buyers when the Peruvian companies are coming and what they’re bringing each time.”

Peru and Quinoa The Trade Commission of New York has been responsible for introducing authentic Peruvian dishes from local Peruvian chefs by promoting

of exports. Blueberries, artichokes and avocados have also been on the rise in recent years, with the exportation of artichokes achieving an 18% growth in value over the past two years alone. According to Falco, American companies that previously bought food products from other countries like Spain and Italy are now buying from Peru, “and they are proud of it too.” The numbers prove that Peruvian products are growing in appeal worldwide. To Falco, it’s a result of the quality and care put into the development of the products. “We have so many products on so many different markets that we know how to do it right.” He even pointed out that their coffee and chocolate are winning prizes around the world.

El Mercado Peru their restaurants to New Yorkers. The agency is deeply involved in Restaurant Week as well as Fashion Week, and are continuously working on other events to promote Peruvian culture around the city. “A couple of years ago, we established Quinoa Week at Peruvian restaurants here because many people in the U.S. eat quinoa regularly and know the health benefits but don’t know that it’s Peruvian,” he says, “so we’re trying to push the fact that quinoa is from Peru.” Disseminating that knowledge to the world is important to Falco because Peru is the biggest exporter of quinoa in the world. In 2014, exportations of quinoa reached $197,000,000, growing from $25,000,000 just six years earlier. Falco says, “We believe that number will reach a billion or more.”

Peruvian Exports Quinoa is not the only product from Peru that is making its way onto the plates of Americans. Functional and superfoods like sacha inchi and maca, both widely known for their outstanding nutritional benefits, are just some of the other many products growing in their number

Gooseberry Tiraditio

Falco and the Trade Commission are continuing to work hard and are eager to promote Peruvian goods to as many potential consumers as possible. Currently, they are promoting the El Mercado Peru pop-up shop now open on the corner of Lexington and East 47th Street. From November 3rd to December 31st, El Mercado Peru will be representing over twenty Peruvian companies, with products ranging from clothing, home décor, children’s toys, jewelry, accessories and food geared towards the Christmas buying season. For Falco, this is another great chance to work on behalf of Peru. “This is an opportunity for every Peruvian brand involved to show New Yorkers who they are, what they have to offer and build up their brand.” Embassyofperu.org

Built on the site of a 15th-century Inca fortress, this boutique hotel is strikingly situated in the foothills of Ecuador’s Cotopaxi volcano and sets the stage to experience idyllic country life while also offering exciting adventure and cultural exploration with an unrivaled glimpse into Ecuador’s rich and colorful past. In addition to its natural grandeur and stunning

views, the unique family-run Hacienda de San Agustin also proudly boasts a fascinating history. Since its construction, it has served as an Inca fortress, an Augustinian convent, and a temporary home for the French Geodesic mission. The current owner, Mignon Plaza, inherited the property from her grandfather, Leonidas Plaza, two-time president of Ecuador and continues to carry on the spirit and warmth of family which is evidenced by the design and atmosphere of this special hotel. Today, relics of the past still remain, including two meticulously carved volcanic stone walls of the dining room and chapel which have impressively survived from the 17th century - truly regarded as living pieces of history. LA SELVA JUNGLE LODGE Off The Beaten Path in Ecuador By Lisa Loverro

W

hile many might think the Galapagos Islands, located 620 miles off the coast of South America, are the only place to visit when planning a trip to the country of Ecuador, there is really so much more to see and do in this small gem of a country that lies among the more familiar countries in South America. That’s not to say that you should not visit the Galapagos, but perhaps consider extending your trip or returning to this magnificent country for a second time to experience the Ecuador’s mainland, which has bustling indigenous markets, rugged Andean landscapes, the Amazon rainforest and exquisite cuisine. There is much to see in the country’s three mainland regions of the Pacific Coast, Andes and the Amazon, from historical attractions, local villages to a bio-diverse ecosystem and jungle wildlife.

104 | resident.com

Throughout the country there are an estimated 1600 species of birds, many found in the Amazon region of the country. Specifically, the Amazon rainforest, one of the world’s natural geographic wonders, is about a 2-hour drive from Ecuador’s capital city of Quito,

accessing just the edge of the rainforest. Or, if you prefer to travel deeper into the Amazon, a 30-minute flight will get into a section of the rainforest with fewer tourists where you’ll encounter monkeys, toucans, lizards and local indigenous communities. While in the rainforest, book a stay at the Le Selva Amazon Eco Lodge, located in

ents whenever possible.

the center of the rainforest and adjacent to the Yasuni National Park. The proximity of the lodge to the park itself is reason enough to book a room here, as the Yasuni sits at the intersection of the Andes, the Equator and the Amazon region, where extremely rich communities of plants, amphibians, birds, and mammals in South America converge. This part of the Amazon is also home to two indigenous nations, the Kichwa and the Waorani, who live in settlements scattered along the roads and rivers. Accessing the Le Selva Amazon Eco Lodge is quite the adventure in itself as there are no roads leading to the property. After arriving in Quito you’ll have to hop on a connecting flight to the city of Coca. From there, a two hour motorized

canoe down the Napo River will lead you a handle-paddled canoe, eventually leading you to the lodge… 5 hours after you arrived in Quito! Along the way, you’ll get a chance to acclimate to the surroundings of the Amazon and see the local people living in villages dotted along the riverbanks. The lodge offers you “jungle living” at its best. There are nineteen thatched roof bungalows made from locally sourced bamboo. You’ll enjoy tiled bathrooms, rainforest showers, hammocks, private balconies and panoramic views of Lake Garzacocha. The main area of the lodge offer an open-air bar and dining area where you’ll mingle with like-minded travelers from around the globe. Meals are gourmet style here and you’ll enjoy delicious healthy dishes with locally sourced ingredi-

The location of the Le Selva Amazon Eco Lodge is ideal for rainforest excursions and discovery. Included in the price of your stay are daily activities that will keep you active and energized throughout the day. From hiking the nearby trails to canoe rides, English-speaking guides along with a native guide will inform you on all the flora, fauna and wildlife located along in the area. A highly recommended tour is the Rainforest Canopy Observation Tower where you’ll hike either a 20-minute express route or a 2-hour scenic route to the tower. There, you’ll reach a 120 foot observation platform from which a 360° view of world-class bird watching awaits you. Also exciting is the night walk through the jungle that allows you to understand the nocturnal nature of the rainforest. A visit to the indigenous communities living nearby to the lodge is also a highly recommended excursion. You’ll visit a school and interact with the school children, meet with villagers, and perhaps even try some of the local foods (if you dare). When it’s time for bedtime back at the lodge, the sounds of the rainforest create a symphony like no other to lull you to sleep. La Selva Eco lodge provided the perfect base camp from which to explore the Amazon rainforest, and one you will never forget. laselvajunglelodge.com

IMMERSIVE ECUADOR ME to WE and TTC

By Haiting Tan

nspired by their volunteering experiences in third world countries, Marc and Craig Kielburger established ME to WE. Hoping their friends could venture out of their comfort zones, the brothers established WE Charity to take friends and other youths to volunteer in third world countries while interacting with local citizens. In 1999, the Kielburger brothers founded Leaders Today, the precursor to ME to WE, which ran volunteer trips and leadership camps. The Kielburgers also hope that through their organization, volunteers will reconsider their consumer choices through purchases. The Kielburgers also hope to raise awareness of purchasing recyclable items in order to leave a positive imprint on the planet. Needing to build a greater international reach, ME to WE is cooperating with The Travel Corporation. The Travel Corporation CEO Brett Tollman revealed that his company’s seven brands including Trafalgar, Contiki Holidays, Insight Vacations, Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection, Lion World Travel, African Travel, Inc., Adventure World and the TreadRight Foundation have partnered with Me to We trips with immersive itineraries to Kenya, Ecuador and India. “Through our not-for-profit TreadRight Foundation, we have been working to create a positive impact to promote sustainable tourism worldwide, with carefully selected partners and projects

and some of the numerous local communities we visit,” said Brett Tollman. “Many of our travelers are open to experiencing meaningful travel with unforgettable, moving experiences. We are therefore very excited to be supporting ME to WE’s outstanding immersive volunteer trips, which we will help promote with our 10,000 team members across the globe and with the involvement of our loyal travel partners globally.” Each ME to WE Trip takes place in a community where ME to WE’s renowned charitable partner puts its 20-year history of holistic, sustainable development to work through its WE Villages program. What makes ME to WE Trips even more world changing is that half of ME to WE’s net profits are donated to its charitable partner—helping travelers make an even bigger impact on the communities they visit. The other half is reinvested to grow the enterprise and its social mission.

One of ME to WE more prominent trips, travelers can journey to Ecuador. From here they can enjoy a rainforest adventure in the Amazon jungle at ME to WE’s Minga Lodge and join community members to work on a sustainable development project while learning about the indigenous Kichwa culture. They will also be invited to the home of a local shaman to experience a traditional cleansing ceremony and blessing. Through the trip, travelers will study Ecuador’s rich history and examine the country’s economic disparities and human rights struggles. Your exploration of the Amazon will take you to scale the mountains among the clouds and trek the lush jungle in order to understand the world’s climates and its effects on our environment. Your trip is bound to be an exciting, fulfilling and educating adventure. contiki.com/contikicares/me-to-we.html

ESCAPES Valuing the need for privacy, and comfort, Ashkenazie also refuses offer open seats on other chartered flights and does not believe in the “hitching a ride,” concept of some of his competitors. The potential for chartered flights, according to his new “pay as you fly,” model is simply unlimited.

Take to the Skies in Luxurious Comfort & Style By Haiting Tan

ired of standing in line for security check? Want to avoid delays and flight cancellations? Hoping for free check-in baggage?

With WingzUp, passengers can fly five minutes upon arrival, at a private airport, board a plane without waiting in line for security checks, and most importantly, do not have to endure flight delays and cancellations. While WingzUp is a relatively young company, Ashkenazie’s interest in planes developed at a young age. Being one of the few fortunate people to witness the landing and explore the interior of the first Boeing 747 at Pan American Airways. Alan Ashkenazie gets chills from simply watching planes takeoff and land. Ashkenazie states that his family always knew of his aspirations to become a pilot. Nevertheless, Ashkenazie went on to become lifetime businessman and owner. Graduating from New York University in 1981 with a major in business administration, he prided himself on his ability to “sell anything.” As such, Ashkenazie entered the business of chartered flights with one goal in mind: to exceed private flying customers experience and expectations. There, he noticed that the model offered by other flight charter companies was a ‘members-only’ business approach, and as most of these companies did not own their aircraft’s, they were left vulnerable to closure at anytime. Ashkenazie decided to find a way to change this. Prior to establishing WingzUp, Ashkenazie estab-

lished direct contacts with airplane owners and operators, hoping to pave the way for an innovative company model. This enabled him to launch a “new way of charter” with no memberships and a “pay as you fly” plan. WingzUp’s flights include all the service, comfort, benefits and safety of membership and ownership of private charter clubs, but without the commitment and at half the price. Where an average private plane charter could cost $7,500.00 per hour WingzUp “pay as you fly” plan averages only $4,000 .00 per hour. “Having the ability to offer the same service, and amenities, without the commitment of putting up a quarter of a million dollars.” Ashkenazie takes pride in WingzUp as a “completely customer service oriented company.” His roster of clients is amazed that he is able to offer all these benefits without any long-term commitment on their part, and are never disappointed. WingzUp’s service also offers full service catering, and 24 hour contact. They can even organize tickets to sporting events, yacht charters or book customized hotel packages. Without a membership club, WingzUp offers “all the luxury without the commitment.” “On regular flights customers are pushed through like cattle,” Ashkenazie says, “it simply isn’t enjoyable.” Passengers endure lines, wait for hours, to be seated with hundreds of strangers where cannot dictate their personal preferences, and they do not control their flight times. At WingzUp, customers have their own plane and crew. “Everything is done on your schedule and to your service standards.”

Ashkenazie says “We love our customers and treat them like family” and want to ensure that they are served the best way possible.” WingzUp has flown Presidents and foreign dignitaries. They have flown musicians, and even a rapper and his band for the launch of a Tommy Hilfiger men’s underwear line. “We flew the rapper and his crew from California to Miami for a concert. After that, we flew him to New York and back to Vegas.” During the course of the Olympics, WingzUp chartered long haul jets to Rio for musical equipment teams. Going forward, Ashkenazie noted that during holiday season, WingzUp would offer group and family chartered flights to vacation hot spots such as Mexico, Florida and Paris. Taking care of their customers prior to takeoff, while in flight, and after landing; Ashkenazie says there is “nothing his company can’t do.” Being able to offer “any size at anytime from anywhere” is Ashkenazie’s passion and promise to his clients. wingzup.biz

SIMPLY

BONAIRE By Jennifer Pelaez

C

arved by millennia of wind, water, and earth movements, the unspoiled and beautiful island of Bonaire is often referred to as the best kept secret of the Caribbean. Refreshingly less developed from its neighboring islands, Aruba and Curaçao, Bonaire offers a magical simplicity and purity which is unrivaled.

Collectively known as the ABC islands, they are the three western-most islands in the South Caribbean, off the coast of Venezuela with a fascinating Dutch colonial history and West Indian heritage. Located just outside the tropical hurricane belt, constant sunshine and a tropical climate moderated by trade winds from the Atlantic, invite di-

vers and vacationers to experience paradise year round. As the least populated and most authentic of this group of islands, Bonaire is a haven of natural beauty with its amazing reef-lined coast, designated national park status, sparkling turquoise blue waters, and peaceful laid-back and off-the-beaten-path vibe , it is no wonder many of its guests are loyal repeat visitors. Here, just a short ride from the airport in the sleepy capital of Kralendijk, located on a four-acre, private peninsula within an exclusive beachfront enclave, Harbour Village Beach Club stands proudly as Bonaire’s only luxury resort. It not only offers a secluded tropical paradise to unwind and relax, but also features on-property amenities such as a firstclass PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Center, a 64-slip marina with mega-yacht dock, and world-class restaurant to keep you as entertained as you choose to be. Upon arriving at Harbour Village, you immediately feel a sense of understated luxury,

to raise awareness for ocean conservation. With many upcoming exciting plans, including the creation of an Ocean Learning Center on-property and a series of Global Ocean Summits held at Harbour Village, their commitment to researching and exploring the world’s oceans is commendable. Although hard to leave this haven of tranquility, explore outside the resort by heading towards the northern part of the island where you can find a coastal area in its original virgin state with a hilly and rocky terrain, as well as the vast Washington Slagbaai National Park, which is contrasted by the flat geography of the southern part of the island. Here, you can find the mesmerizingly pink Lake Pekel (Dutch for Salty Lake) with its surrounding grand snowy-white salt mountains set against the deep blue of the Caribbean sky, as well as Bonaire’s famous pink flamingos. Stop by Sorobon Beach, where the warm shallow water and steady trade winds set the stage for superb windsurfing.

where elegance meets modern simplicity, which is elevated even further by the friendliness and hospitality of the staff. At Harbour Village, your wish is their command, and attention to comfort and detail is a priority. The 38 Dutch-Caribbean style rooms and suites decorated in European Colonial Plantation style reflect the island’s mellow elegance and are inviting and comfortable, the perfect home away from home. Premier suites tout prime beachfront location, private double terrace with lounge chairs, and a fully equipped kitchen. Nestled amid lush tropical gardens with beautiful bright flowers and palm trees, just steps from the only private whitesand beach on the island, walking throughout the resort is a delightful and peaceful experience. This prized stretch of soft sand and azure swimming area provides an ideal spot from which to lounge or take in the beautiful view of the tiny island of Klein right across, a must for snorkeling and diving. Laze on one of the plush lounge chairs while sipping on a cocktail, or sway away on a hammock while taking in the cool Caribbean breeze. While most guests are veteran scuba divers, it is also a great place to learn how to dive, where les-

sons and certifications are possible through Great Adventures Bonaire, the on-site PADI five-star Instructor Development Center, with excursions leaving twice a day. A true diver’s paradise and world renowned for its pristine coral, Bonaire offers 86 well-defined dive sites. Equally impressive is the conservation and preservation effort by Harbour Village as well as the entire island of Bonaire in caring for and maintaining their most valuable reefs and marine life. Just recently, Harbour Village announced its partnership with explorer and ocean preservationist Fabien Cousteau, in order

Back at the resort, relax and get pampered at the terrific spa offering soothing treatments either in a treatment room or by the private outdoor cascade pool for a blissful hour of relaxation. Afterwards, head for a sumptuous fine-dining experience at Harbour Village’s exquisite La Balandra Restaurant and Bar which was uniquely designed after an antique Spanish ship that extends over the water and serves up fresh creative dishes excellently prepared. It is the ideal place to watch the awe-inspiring vibrant sunsets and also a wonderful outdoor space to feel at one with nature. In the evenings, the surrounding water is lit so you can observe the fish below, as well as pelicans that make for delightful entertainment. harbourvillage.com

FROM HAMILTON TO GREASE LIVE David Korins Designs the Sets of a Generation By Kristen Oliveri

F

or David Korins, the New York-based Hamilton set designer extraordinaire, his occupation was a calling. As a young child growing up in Massachusetts dabbling in the arts, he felt drawn to the set design of his high school productions. By the time he started college, he fell in love with the design process and honed his skills at the Williamson Theater Festival before deciding on calling New York City his home. Today, Korins is attracted to many different projects—taking on everything from the iconic Broadway production of Hamilton to designing restaurant concepts, to producing rock concerts. “It’s a blessing and a curse to be curious about all types of designs, which translate into many different things for me,” Korins told Resident Magazine. “I’ve somehow made a career out of learning on the job.” As for tackling the all-consuming production of Hamilton, Korins cautioned, “Be careful for what you wish for. I had such a huge responsibility and I knew from the beginning that Hamilton was a staggering work of genius and there was no blueprint for what the show should be,” he began. “There are 51 songs in this epic, sprawling show and my job was to wrestle it down to the ground and find something that wouldn’t

pull focus and help narrative come across.” The real design challenge in life is being able to focus the audience throughout the plot, as to what was important and what was not, he added. “This was particularly difficult because it was an epic journey. Today, we are all carrying around pictures of these people in our wallets. We know how this story ends,” he explained. As soon as Hamilton was a huge success, Korins dove head first into another all-en-

compassing project: designing and staging FOX’s Grease LIVE. He applied what he felt was one of the most compelling storytelling elements for a live production, which was showing the audience how they went from one scene to another, as if it were happening live on stage. The issue with taking on Grease was the iconography of the show, and what it represents in American culture. “I think we paid homage to the original by doing our own version of it,” said Korins. Next up for Korins, is a host of other creative projects such as: working on a New York City restaurant that’s situated across from the Hamilton theater, as well as, two new Broadway productions including War Paint and Dear Even Hanson. He’s also working on a major pop artist’s world concert tour, although, he remained mum on what personality was involved. What’s quite evident from speaking with Korins is that he certainly isn’t lacking in creativity, with a host of unique projects that will keep him and his team busy, just as he begins to hit his career stride. “I’m just now starting to have a clue about my work,” he added. As for what his dream project might be, Korins shoots for the stars. “I’d like to design the opening ceremony for the Olympics.”

CATS IS REBORN WHILE JERSEY BOYS TAKES ITS FINAL BOW By Kristen Oliveri

M

ark Ballas, who’s spent 18 seasons on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, is putting his musical theater background to work as the last actor to star as the iconic Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys, ending its 11-year long run. “I’ve always had the dream to be in the show and playing Frankie was always the goal,” Ballas told Resident Magazine. Honing the skill set of bringing to life on stage such a well-known part— as well as playing a real person—isn’t without its challenges, he explained. “I’m going to bring my own thing to it. They don’t want me to come in and do my own impression; instead I’m learning the lines and finding my own groove, staying true to Frankie and the original.”

Leona Lewis as Grizabella in CATS

A

ndrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS on Broadway has always intrigued me. From watching it as a child, at the Winter Garden Theater to seeing many lackluster community theater adaptations, I’ve never been sure if I adored it or despised it. This most recent iteration on Broadway, which is running at the Neil Simon Theater, pays homage to the record-breaking original that opened in 1982 and ran for a staggering 7,485 performances over the course of 18 years. With those impossibly huge shoes to fill, the new creative team on this production led by John Napier, Scenic and Costume Design; Natasha Katz, Lighting Design; Mick Potter, Sound Design; choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler; and direction by Trevor Nunn, all show that this revival has a more intoxicating draw than ever before. The sheer physicality of what can only be described as triple threat performers in numbers such as “Macavity, the Mystery Cat” and “Magical Mister Mistoffelees” is hypnotizing for captivated theater-goers. The lyrics crawl under your skin just like a cat gliding across the floor and before you realize it, you’re humming along with the music, longing to be a junkyard cat portrayed so eloquently on stage. And finally, the show stopping number “Memory” was given to none other than British pop star Leona Lewis, making her Broadway debut. She brings a newness to the song that everyone’s been singing for over thirty years; a brightness that can only be delivered by a pop vocalist such as herself.

To prepare for the roll, Ballas took a multi-pronged approach listening to the Broadway original cast and the Four Seasons. “I want to be as true to Frankie as possible. I’m bringing my own seasoning to the character by being optimistic and forward thinking as the younger version of Frankie and then being able to show darkness and change in his later years,” he said. As for what’s next for Ballas when he finishes his run in Jersey Boys, he plans to hit the road with his band named Alexander Jean, who he plays in alongside his fiancé BC Jean.

While I am always a bit flustered and confused by this show’s calculating narrative filled with song and dance, all I know is that I won’t be able to get this particular soundtrack out of my head for a very long time.

SOLID REVIVALS &

A THOUGHTFUL COMEDY ON STAGE By Barry Bassis

I

t’s an open question whether this season will bring us exciting new musicals but, so far, there are a couple of excellent revivals.

The Irish Repertory Theatre, under the direction of Charlotte Moore, has cut the 1947 hit “Finian’s Rainbow” down to size so that it is an unqualified delight.

Almost half a century after “Finian’s Rainbow” came “Falsettos” and life had changed a great deal during the interim. A stunning revival of “Falsettos” presented by Lincoln Center Theater at the Walter Kerr Theater demands to be seen. With its witty score by William Finn and book by Finn and James Lapine, who also directed the revival, the show is still timely and moving.

The script, which takes place in the mythical Rainbow Valley, Missitucky, is a mix of whimsy (with a leprechaun and a pot of gold) and social commentary (with a racist senator, who is turned black) along with romance. Where the show achieves greatness is in its songs by Burton Lane and E. Y. Harburg (who penned the book with Fred Saidy). The score includes charmers like “How Are Things in Glocca Morra?,” “Old Devil Moon” and “Look to the Rainbow.” Even a lesser known song, such as “Necessity,” scores because it is so well performed.

The neurotic central character, Marvin (Christian Borle), has an ex-wife, Trina (Stephanie J. Block), a male lover, Whizzer (Andrew Rannells) and a young son, Jason (Anthony Rosenthal). To complicate matters, Marvin sends his wife to see his psychiatrist, Mendel (Brandon Uranowitz), and those two become romantically involved. When the second act starts in 1981, Marvin and Whizzer have broken up and Trina and Mendel have married. Whizzer develops Aids and Jason must decide whether or not to go through with his bar mitzvah.

The cast could not be better, with the pristine soprano of Melissa Errico, Ryan Silverman as her love interest, lightfooted Mark Evans as the leprechaun and Dewey Caddell as the bigoted politician. Also worthy of praise are the inventive choreography of Barry McNabb (in the theater’s limited space) and the set by James Morgan. The run has been extended until December 31st and this is a show the whole family can enjoy.

Borle has already won Tony awards for “Something Rotten!” and “Peter and the Starcatcher.” This may be his third. The whole cast is praiseworthy.

David Hare’s 1982 drama, “Plenty,” is being revived at the Public Theater. The lead role of Susan Traherne has attracted top actresses, from Kate Nelligan on stage to Meryl Streep on screen. This production stars the formi-

dable Rachel Weisz. She plays an Englishwoman who became a resistance fighter in France during World War II when she was only 17. The post-war world becomes a disappointment to her, despite her loving husband, a diplomat named Raymond Brock (played by Corey Stoll). Emily Bergl is Traherne’s bohemian friend and Byron Jennings is Brock’s boss. David Leveaux’s production is uneven but Weisz and an intelligent script are definite pluses. Mike Bartlett’s “Love, Love, Love,” presented by Roundabout Theater Company at the Laura Pels Theater, is a trenchant British social comedy. The play covers the baby boomer generation from the swinging 60’s (when Kenneth and Sandra meet) to 2011 (when they are divorced and have adult children). In the middle section they are in the process of breaking up while their kids are messed up teenagers. Michael Mayer’s direction is right on target, with strong performances by Amy Ryan and Richard Armitage as the parents and Zoe Kazan and Ben Rosenfield as the children. Alex Hurt is Armitage’s brother, an English version of the kind of loser Ralph Bellamy used to play. Susan Hilferty’s costumes are also witty.

BOOKS du JOUR DECEMBER 2016 By Frederic Colier | General@bookcasetv.com

Given that we are fast wrapping up this strange year, and that the sprint for the holiday season is about to kick off, I feel it is my duty to coax your reading efforts and shopping reflexes with some inviting suggestions. Crime novels are perfect for family gatherings . . . just in the likelihood that you need some time alone. They make for easy and immediate escapes.

“Moral Defense” by Marcia Clark (Thomas & Mercer, pp 460, $24.95)

“The Travelers,” by Chris Pavone (Crown Publishers pp 437, $ 27.00)

“The One Man” by Andrew Gross (Minotaur Books, pp 418, $26.99)

“Quick Sand” by Malin Persson Giolito (trans. Rachel Willson-Broyles, Other Press, pp 432, $26.95)

“Skewed: A Critical Thinker’s Guide to Media Bias,” by Larry Atkins. (Prometheus Books, pp 280, $24.00)

Let me start with this month’s most unlikely candidate. Someone who has been in the news twenty or so years ago during the infamous O. J. trial. I am referring to Marcia Clark. Her new book, “Moral Defense,” is a novel. Yes, you have read loud and clear. A crime novel to be precise, which is by the way not her first one. “Moral Defense,” is a sequel to “Blood Defense” (soon to be a TV series). Of course, probably like most people, you did not know that Clark also wrote crime fiction. After all, she gained fame for being the prosecutor of one of the most controversial murders in our history, something which cannot be easy to shake off, especially if you intend to reinvent yourself.

If you have read Chris Pavone’s previous novels “The Expats” and “The Accident.” you know that you will travel abroad, extensively. “The Travelers” will not disappoint you. I suspect one day, Pavone will write high-end espionage novels, à la James Bond, since he seems so comfortable in the genre, and his writing only gains in intensity.

“The One Man” marks a radical departure for Andrew Gross. His past novels (nine and counting) were all in the pure thriller genre, a craft he learned straight from the Lord himself, James Patterson, with whom he co-authored several novels. “The One Man” however is a war novel, set in WWII, with a thriller plot. A daring move for an author of this caliber with a large following. But audacity combined with skills and originality can only translate in superior work, which is what “The One Man” bears witness. The characters have gained depth. Descriptions are layered, breathing life, while the plot is more organic and humanly warmer, an anachronism despite being set in a death camp.

Kudos to Other Press for publishing this Nordic wonder. “” has been bestsellers in more than 20 countries, mainly the old continent, and it was shocking to see that no US publisher would rush to snatch up the US rights. “Quick Sand” is Persson Giolito’s fourth crime novel and takes its cue from a mass killing, such as the one in Norway in 2011 . . . Its main protagonist, the 18-year old, Maja Norberg, is a popular student who survives a school rampage. Set as a flashback, prior to the gory event, the plot trails Maja’s past to find out whether she participated in the murdering. She has been accused, being the only one to survive, and waits in jail for her trial.

I am not sure how many people have read this book so far . . . But given what we now know about the Presidential elections fiasco, meant here as the shocking Trump’s victory, “Skewed,” should have been a must-read for all political parties and media outlets involved. That no polls had predicted the baffling result only makes Atkins’ point more trenchant. The fact that we had never seen such political polarization and dismissal of facts, makes “Skewed,” an even more essential read.

In this finely chiseled engaging novel, a Polish-descent polyglot intelligence officer, Nathan Blum, is offered the mission of a lifetime: enter Auschwitz and escape with one of the prisoner, a professor named Alfred Mendl, who is believed to hold crucial secret that could put an end to the folly of the Third Reich. The ending will not be disclosed here . . . but the novel questions the nature of meaning and devotion to a cause, especially when the involvement calls for huge personal sacrifices for the good of all.

This alone would not have been enough to get this book included in this month column. But Persson Giolito’s craft takes us on a psychological ride, where perhaps the narrator of the story is not as reliable as first thought. She met a questionable character, Sebastian Fagerman, prior to the massacre. Little by little, we can hear the cogs of her internal life flicker with strange sounds. As she is swept off her feet, alienating everyone in her immediate circle, we ponder if her outcries are not simply screams for help . . . that everyone missed.

But in defense of Clark, she reads like a seasoned pro. “Moral Defense” follows the criminal defense attorney, Samantha Brinkman, who represents a teenager, whose family has been brutally murdered. The more Samantha puts her case together, the more she discovers that her narrative thread does not align. If everyone has been murdered, how come her client has survived? . . . Beyond the plot, ultimately, what makes a thriller stand above the fray is not the clever complexity of twists and turns, but the moral questions the main character confronts. And there Clark’s experience and honesty triumph.

“The Travelers” is a high-end fast-paced thriller transporting you in all the most unlikely locations in the world. Its main protagonist, Will Rhodes, is a “travel” writer for a magazine and lives out of a suitcase. It may sound like a dream, but if you are stuck in a rut in your own life make no mistake that this sort of conditions are often the result of internal “traveling” affairs. In Will’s case, crumbling marriage, crumbling house, and crumbling dreams. One day, during an assignment in Argentina, he cannot resist the temptation of a mysterious Australian woman . . . and thus starts an exhilarating domino effect of suspicion and disappearances that will put Will and his circle within danger.

“Skewed,” is a history of media, an analysis of the current situation of the landscape, and a courageous attempt of explain why advocacy journalism has only grown in its domination of opinions in newspapers, talk radio, news network, and the internet. The keyword here is biases, which only leave listeners and readers stranded in competing and conflicting worldviews, where truth is often only a matter of opinions. Agenda driven, selective used of data, have resulted in a bipolar landscape, which, as we have witnessed, fails to hear those without voices. An insightful book to lift up the one-sided blindness of our time.

ROBERT CENEDELLA Art Bastard By Bennett Marcus

The Garden of Earthly Delights

obert Cenedella’s latest painting, Fin del Mundo, depicts president-elect Donald Trump as an orange-colored devil surrounded by a court of vanquished politicians including Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Rand Paul, and a green-tinged Chris Christie. In the triptych, the Pope is being crushed in Trump’s tiny hand, Uncle Sam is about to be trampled upon, and Mother Earth appears as a grotesque woman in a bikini. The painting, a 6’x10’ mural loosely based on Hiero-

being literally plucked from the headlines, the painting, valued at $250,000, was commissioned two years ago by a client. So it was started long before Trump won the election. “I think because of the current political interest of Donald Trump, a lot of people are absolutely just feeling fairly frustrated and actually frightened,” Cenedella told us during an interview that took place prior to the election. “I started this painting almost two years ago, and it has developed, it’s changed,” Cenedella explained. For instance, he changed the Liberty Bell by adding the names of the African American shooting victims.

work is about what’s happening, and that’s what this painting is concerned with.” He originally titled the work “The End of the World,” because that was the theme. “But I was thinking of how Trump has constantly gone after the Mexicans, in particular, the Spanish speaking [people], and so I thought that Fin del Mundo was much better. It made more of a point because a lot of the painting is directed at Trump.” “Putin is also in the painting,” Cenedella pointed out. “He’s next to the other political figures, because I feel Putin has become sort of like Trump’s hero or something. He’s almost like part of the election, as it’s turned out.” The Pope, Cenedella reminded us, had criticized Trump, saying, “Trump had a couple of nasty things to say, even to the Pope,” he said. “He has no boundaries, I guess.”

Mother Earth Trump is also a climate-change denier, and Cenedella worked that into the painting by crowning the Mother Earth figure with the doomsday clock on her head. “They reset this [doomsday clock] periodically depending on how dangerously close we are annihilating ourselves, and it was recently moved from a quarter of to five of,” he explained. “Now how many years this means, I don’t know, but it’s not a good thing.” In capturing the many complexities of Trump’s particularly complex and divisive presidential campaign in a painting, Cenedella noted that the still image has one advantage over the ephemeral nature of TV.

Robert Cenendella and Fin del Mundo

nymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights, is a political commentary depicting the world as an industrial wasteland, emblazoned with fast food logos and a Liberty Bell inscribed with the names of murdered black men, including Trayvon Martin.

Fin del Mundo In the lead-up to the controversial November 8 presidential election, New York gallery Central Park Fine Arts held a reception unveiling Fin del Mundo to the public in its 57th Street window. “There were probably three hundred people out on the street, and it was a big event,” said Cenedella. “They had a lot of cameras there, a lot of interviews.” Despite

“I put one name on there, it was Trayvon Martin, and then, as all of these shootings took place, I was curious how many others there were, and it was 60 pages of unarmed black youth that had been shot, let’s say in a two-year period or something. I was amazed.”

Political Paintings As a political painter, Cenedella says he does not work with what is popular in the art world at any given time. “I’m not in the mainstream,” he said. “I am, traditionally, a painter. I paint what’s around me, not just political stuff, but I do portraits, I do still life, I do all kinds of things. But my political

“The still image, going back to Bosch, those images still have meaning to us, and they were painted five hundred years ago,” said Cenedella, who is the subject of a critically acclaimed documentary, Art Bastard, that is garnering buzz on the award circuit and is on the Oscar list for Best Documentary “and as a political painter, I found that a lot of museums in this country refrain from showing my kind of art.” He’s not surprised that Fin del Mundo has drawn a huge reaction. “It’s because people don’t see work like this that often anymore, and unlike video, it’s there. You know, it’s not something that’s going to disappear.” rcenedellagallery.com

A CHRISTMAS STORY By Jane Pontarelli

I

t’s Christmas in New York and one of the best times of the year, The Holidays, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall and all the trimmings. I introduce you to Leslie Riddle and her fur baby Puccini who live on the 37th floor of a Hell’s Kitchen high rise. Puccini the amazing Yorkiepoo did not always have a charmed life, but more about that later. Leslie moved to New York from Texas after college to pursue her dream of dancing and entertainment. Leslie having grown up an only child, always had pets in her life. One day riding her bike on West72nd St she saw the cutest little poodle in a window. She got the dog and named it Poopsie even though she was traveling so much with Broadway and working on advancing her career. Poopsie became her companion through the ups and downs in her life, enter Petunia who came into their lives 2 years later… On one of Leslies trips to Texas, Leslie flew into St Louis on a hot Sept day, she took the 2 girls with her, back in the day pets rode in cargo. Baggage handlers left

the dogs on the hot pavement, Leslie banging on the window to no avail with and no help from the flight attendants. When they arrived in Dallas her dogs were half dead, she rushed them to the Vets. Petunia smaller of the 2 did not make it. TWA gave Leslie a 50 dollar voucher for her next trip. Leslie called her friend at Time Magazine who was an Editor who was friends with Tippi Hedren and Doris Day, Between these 4 fabulous women who love pets got Congress plenty of press and put TWA in a tailspin, they didn’t know what hit them. The Ladies got a bill passed that regulated transporting animals on airlines in a safer way. Leslie wished they named it “Petunia’s Bill” but just by knowing there animals are safer today was the best Christmas gift ever. Poopsie went on to live a very happy 16 years. Nine months had passed and Leslie being very busy working with French shoe designer, Jean Michal Cazabet, got a phone call from a dog rescuer in New Jersey, she made Leslie get another dog. Leslie drove out to Jersey to see a Yorkie who was pregnant from a toy poodle and would she please come and foster one. Leslie went to take a look and feel in love with a funny looking red-haired puppy who was sitting all by himself, home he went. Puccini has grown up in the show business in the show rooms with buyers and press and millions of shoes.. Leslie has gone from Show Biz to Shoe Biz as an executive for for Rossimonda who makes all the shoes for Vera Wang, Fendi and several other well known designers. But as Leslie says, Puccini is the rescued Star of the family. Check out his Facebook Page, Puccini the Amazing Yorkiepoo to see pictures of him and his friends and charities. He has modeled for Fit, Lord and Taylor and The Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation along with Mom. Leslie and Puccini entertained the Rockette Alumni at Radio City Music Hall. Leslie, a former Rockette,

has served on the board of Directors for the Alumni. Their pride and joy is directing The Distinguished Young Pageant for New Jersey and is a technical advisor for the Joan Oloff Shoe Collection and manages the career of Puccini. I asked Leslie since Puccini brings so much love into your life what is the most important thing about him. She told me for the last 8 years he has been by her side when no else was, and no matter where they go he brings smiles to people’s faces and that is what life is about. We need more cheerfulness and happy moments in this life on earth and these little ones definitely know how to deliver the joy. Everybody enjoy the beautiful Holiday season and Merry Christmas. Rescue each other.
