LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

T

o be honest, I’ve never been the biggest fan of winter—once the holidays are over, I start dreaming of warmer months. Thanks to this issue, however, I’ve gained a new appreciation for February, and learned there are many ways to make it a very hot month.

There are, for instance, a host of non-traditional ways to spice things up for Valentine’s Day, from a dinner in the dark with a secret menu to a butler-served meal complete with vintage Dom Perignon—as well as a Tinder-themed comedy show for those who like to laugh about modern romance. There are also plenty of ways to stay warm and cozy, including fireside jazz, sumptuous spa treatments, and a month-long festival dedicated to hot chocolate. That’s my kind of celebration. I also got to relive two wonderful trips thanks to this issue: a resort respite in Mexico that gave me, among other things, one of the best meals of my life, and my first-ever visit to Rome, during which I had the incredible fortune to wander the empty halls of the Vatican before any other tourists arrived, and have the entire Sistine Chapel virtually all to myself. You’ll find all of the details of those experiences within these pages, along with wine tastings in Sonoma, romance in Santorini, and restaurant-hopping in New Orleans, which is, in my opinion, the most delicious city in the world. And speaking of a hot month, there’s our cover star. I was lucky enough to interview Amir Arison, one of the stars of The Blacklist, and I can assure you, he is as likeable in person as he is on the show. He was a pleasure to work with, and definitely made for a very hot cover. I look forward to seeing more of Amir on TV, checking out all of the February events we’ve written about (how much hot chocolate is too much hot chocolate?), and continuing to explore the best places in the city and the world. R

ight after rumors swirled all over the blogosphere that Miley Cyrus and Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth are engaged for the second time around, the pop tart was spotted at JFK airport sporting a humongous ring on her third finger, left hand. The rock is very similar to Miley’s old engagement ring from Liam. The coosome twosome were recently spotted out together after being apart for several years. Former supermodel Stephanie Seymour was reportedly arrested on January 15 for a DUI after getting into an accident in Greenwich, Conn. The wife of polo playing billionaire Peter Brandt was at a stop sign at an I-95 ramp and, instead of driving forward, she put her car into

reverse and hit the car that was behind her. Sources say Stephanie refused to take a sobriety test, but was obviously intoxicated. The driver of the car she backed into was not hurt. Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) hosted a luncheon at the Eventi Hotel to celebrate the new season of their hit shows The Haves and the Have Nots and Love Thy Neighbor. Show creator Tyler Perry, along with cast members John Schneider, Palmer Williams, Jr., and Patrice Lovely were in attendance to greet the 75 plus guests. Word on the curb is that comedienne extraordinaire Tina Fey shelled out $9,508,888 for a house-sized co-operative apartment located directly above an equally-sized pad she and her husband Jeff Richmond

bought in April 2009 for $3.4 million. Since the couple paid a million dollars over the asking price for the new pad, real estate sources are speculating that the plan is to combine both abodes into an urban mansion-sized duplex. According to Deadline Hollywood, after setting Season 4 in Pakistan and Season 5 in Germany, the upcoming sixth season of Homeland will be shot right here in and around the Big Apple. Said Showtime’s David Nevins, “It will be set domestically primarily in the New York area.” Homeland is coming off of a very strong season, getting praise for a storyline that closely resembled the real-life events in Europe, including the rise of ISIS and a terror attack hitting a European capital. L

eonardo DiCaprio received the Best Actor award at the 73rd Golden Globes for his role in the spellbinding blockbuster The Revenant. He also received an Oscar nomination, but the golden statuette might be snatched away by Eddie Redmayne, who becomes a woman in the compelling true-life story of The Danish Girl. Leo wonders, “I don’t see why I can’t have friends of both sexes without wild rumors being circulated. It’s crazy.” On preparing for his role as Lili, Eddie said, “I met many trans women and heard their stories, but reading Lili’s book Man Into Woman was the thing I found most interesting.” You can’t tear your eyes away from director Quentin Tarantino’s twisted western The Hateful Eight. Jennifer Jason Leigh co-stars and took home the award for Best Supporting Actress. She confessed, “I was covered in blood and chained to another actor for six months and I honestly never had more fun in my life.”

Kate Hudson @ The Golden Globes

Look for Lady Gaga to do more screen roles. She won Best Actress for her performance in American Horror Story and said, “I actually wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer, but singing worked out first.” Brace yourselves. Gaga’s song “Til It Happens To You” was nominated for an Oscar. Sylvester Stallone won a Globe for his role in Creed and is a sentimental Oscar favorite, but look for Mark Ruffalo in Spotlight and Tom Hardy’s flashy work in The Revenant to give him a tough fight for the gold. Stallone said, “I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa, for being the best friend I ever had.” Brad Pitt has a key cameo in The Big Short about the housing bubble and the subsequent financial collapse, that he says affected him personally: “I was very upset. A lot of people got duped. And what is more amazing is you talk to the guys in the business now, and they say nothing has really changed.” Oscar.go.com

The chalets boast breathtaking views of the city’s skyline, individual fireplaces, and cozy faux-fur covered furniture. The hot spot’s piece de resistance is the hidden snow machine that produces real snow every hour under the glass-enclosed tent. ith a discerning eye and unmatched flair, Marco Maranghello arranges tresses into stately statements. It is no wonder that many royals have placed themselves in his capable hands. In an era where the digital pace of change has many rushing to adopt the latest trend, Marco is an indisputable standard-bearer for timeless beauty. This has earned him a coveted spot as the top stylist at the John Barrett salon and his work has been highlighted in top fashion publications, such as Vogue , Bazaar , InStyle , and Town & Country . Now, this hairdressing authority is getting ready to make a splash with his di Mare Hair Collection. Marco has developed this line of hair pieces over a period of 18 years, while working in high-end hair salons. His familiarity with hair texture and color lend him the knowledge necessary to produce the right product match for each hair type. Most notably,

Marco’s line features extensions that are silky soft and weightless. His Great Length Ultrasonic Extensions add length and suppleness to any head of hair. These have been featured on the runway, at the Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Versace, and Marchesa fashion shows.

He has witnessed, up close, the transformative power of a great hairstyle on some of these recipients. “It sounds like such a small detail, but it can really change a person’s outlook on life,” he asserts.

While di Mare is exclusively available at the John Barrett Salon at Bergdorf Goodman, plans for its expansion to other luxury outlets are underway. Marco’s goal is to become the leading purveyor of finely made hair extensions, continually spinning tresses that are worth gold to the women he helps to transform. As he puts it, “Hair is an extension of a woman’s personality. I have made it my goal to help each client embrace and exhibit their distinctiveness through their hairstyle.”

Just as Marco can inspire women to feel their best with a new look, he looks to them for inspiration. It’s a symbiotic relationship that continues to produce outstanding results and is already generating great expectation regarding the next chapter in his ascension.

Marco’s vision also extends to charity. He has donated individually styled wigs and

A Fresh Approach to

BEAUTY

I

t may still be winter, but the good news is spring is just around the corner, and it’s time to start planning. As we began mentally preparing for the warmer months, we looked to our favorite beauty guru, Oscar D. Caballero, for his advice on how to make our faces as soft, fresh, and dewy as spring flowers.

46 • Resident • February 2016

First and foremost, Caballero said that we should make a smooth transition into the season with hydrated, glowing skin; make sure you are exfoliating and using a richer cream right now, in order to save your delicate skin from the cold, wind, and dry indoor heating. “Think of your skin as fashion,” Caballero says. “You have to change textures according to the seasons.” Next, we asked Caballero for two different makeup looks that we could add to our spring repertoire, exemplifying the season while giving us different options (after all, it’s a girl’s prerogative to change her mind!)

Spring Ahead Aucoin. Then pop a nude gloss or lipstick, and the look is complete! It’s all about light textures. The result? Glowing!

For the pink and nude glow, as seen on Emy (left) Oscar says: If you want a heavier coverage, try Armani’s Luminous silk foundation, which gives a beautiful glow with the added benefit of the coverage. Quick tip: keep on pressing the foundation in areas you want more coverage. Sheer it down where you don’t want as much. With this face, I like to contour and highlight a bit more. My go-to highlighter and contouring powders for this look are Surratt Beauty (always!). I love their textures. Just make sure you are blending.

For a simple, nude bronzed face, as seen on Nicole (previous page) Oscar says: A great tinted moisturizer on top of your daily cream gives a sheer coverage and beautiful glow. Try NARS tinted moisturizers or Natura Bisse Sheer Cream. They both even out your skin without that foundation look. For the extra benefit of the sun-kissed look in winter/early spring, avoid bronzers that are too deep in shade. I opt for Givenchy Bronze Douce Croisiere in #2. It just gives a golden glow to the skin.

For eyes, a pink base works beautifully for a softer look; apply highlighter after—all over the eyes with a few coats of mascara. You can add a taupe eye shadow to the crease for depth. Adding a white or flesh tone to the water line will brighten your eye as well. Experiment and have fun with it.

Oscar D. Caballero has been a makeup and beauty expert for over 15 years. He was a senior makeup artist at the Victoria’s Secret flagship store, and was part of the team for the runway show in 2013. He honed his skills alongside celebrity makeup artist Sue Devitt—who’s defined Sarah Jessica Parker’s looks on the red carpet—and Oscar managed Devitt’s

Do a soft contouring: pop the cheeks with a pink blush. A creamy texture like the Memoire De Fome by Givenchy gives a rosy glow to the apple of the cheeks. I love gels in the colder months for the added hydration. Hint: these textures can always be used on the lips too; just add a clear gloss on top to make it pop.

EXPERIMENT AND HAVE FUN WITH IT.

Eyes should be brighter as well, adding a pop of shadow, such as Surratt Beauty in Chamois, which is a natural peach. Dust some of the bronzer on the lid, a highlighter under the brow, and you’re done. I prefer an intense black mascara, such as the Givenchy Noir Couture, and a good brow filling. My favorite brow pencil is Kevin

About the artist:

If you wish to make the lips the focus, use a creamier lipstick with a gloss. On Emy, I loved using Chanel’s Rouge Double Intense. On one end it’s a lip stain for very long wear and at the other end a beautiful clear high gloss—perfect for a night out. Why should you worry about reapplying?

beauty line at Barneys. He’s worked with the luxury skincare line Natura Bisse for over ten years (a Beyonce favorite), and as a result learned the rare art of using products to accentuate a woman’s natural beauty—not cover it up. Oscar’s work has been seen on four billboards in Times Square (for Taku Saki), in the Ralph Lauren Midnight Romance ad campaign, and on the faces of Miss Universe Gabriella Isler, Miss Universe Paulina Vega, and several of the Real Housewives. He’s an artist in every sense of the word.

MIR RISON

TV’S HOTTEST RISING STAR BY Pamela Jacobs

T

here are a few things that you notice immediately about Amir Arison when you first meet him: one is that he’s tall and handsome, with dark, kind eyes; the other is that you’ve definitely been seeing a lot of him lately.

After all, in the past five years he’s been on more than a dozen major television shows, including Homeland, American Horror Story: Murder House, Gossip Girl, and Girls. He’s currently one of the stars of NBC’s The Blacklist, playing FBI Technical Specialist Aram Mojtabai—who is most definitely a fan-favorite. The fact that he plays a tech wiz is not surprising—talk to him for five minutes and it’s clear he’s got serious brains behind those good looks (he was raised by two doctors). It’s also not surprising that Arison’s talent, humor, and gutsiness are the reason his character has such a large role on the show; originally a supporting recurring character, the role continued to grow because the writers and producers of the show liked Arison as much as his fans did. This likeability might be one of the reasons he’s been on so many acclaimed television shows in recent years, but it’s clear the main reason is Arison’s pure talent. He has an extensive theater background that includes numerous notable productions, including several Shakespeare plays (Love’s Labor’s Lost and The Tempest) and the Public Theater’s Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them, which was nominated for several awards and received a glowing review from the NY Times. He’s also been seen on the big screen multiple times since his film debut in 2007 (he had three movies that year), and recently produced, directed, and starred in his own short film. Additionally—as if that’s not enough—he teaches young actors, providing guidance to those who hope to have a career as successful as his. I recently sat down with Arison (who lives in New York City) to talk about his current and future work, his family, and his passions; it was immediately evident why the man’s career is on fire—and why Blacklist fans can’t get enough of Aram. CONTINUED

Pamela Jacobs: You’ve been on a lot of very successful shows in a relatively short amount of time. Was there one catalyst, or a time that your career officially began taking off? Amir Arison: There was a period of time when Homeland came out, then American Horror Story came out; those were smaller roles, but those shows hit the zeitgeist in such a big way. Then Homeland won the Emmy and everyone started re-watching it, and I remember feeling the impact of being part of something that people were so excited about. Not long after that I got cast on Girls, and that show is such a cultural milieu type of show, so I did feel the difference. It reminded me of some years ago, when I did a movie called The Visitor; it was one scene in a smaller movie, but it did so well on the Indie circuit. It was a Tom McCarthy movie—he’s got Spotlight out now—and I got such incredible feedback. I went to an audition about two years ago and the casting director said ‘I loved you in The Visitor,’ and I was like ‘whoa, I shot that six years ago,’ but it was a reminder that being a part of something great, no matter the size of the role—something that people watch and remember, like Homeland or American Horror Story or The Visitor—is incredible. When it lands and people appreciate it, it does open more doors and it’s thrilling. I’ve been acting my entire life, but all of a sudden around that Homeland, American Horror Story time, I did feel the change. It was exciting. PJ: Your role on The Blacklist has gotten significantly bigger recently. What’s it been like, watching your character’s role grow? AA: The whole role of Aram is, in my view, a miracle. I’ve said this many times: our producing director Michael Watkins was the director of my first episode, and was really encouraging. He became one of the bosses on the show—he hired me initially and encouraged me to make it my own and to have fun with it. An actor’s confidence is like a CONTINUED

candle; it’s very fragile, and it’s very easy to get snuffed out, but I got encouraged.

PJ: Can you tell us anything about what we can expect from Aram in the near future?

Also, through the hard knocks of my career, I had to develop a discipline. Plus, my parents really instilled good values and professionalism in me—be prepared, gracious always. I’m also aware from the struggles I’ve had as an actor, and that to suddenly be a part of something that’s really getting seen, like The Blacklist, I knew that I wasn’t going to take the moment for granted; I was very conscientious of the opportunity and remained extremely focused, prepared, grateful.

AA: I just got the [latest] script, and it’s very exciting. I’ve heard some rumors about what’s coming down the pike, and The Blacklist is not going to disappoint. Towards the end of the season, things are going to kick up to another level.

I have become a TV animal [laughs] and have been working pretty steadily in TV for the past five years—but before that I was a theater animal, doing play after play after play. I think I’m where I’m supposed to be right now. I’m having more fun with television at the moment, but theater is vital to my organs.

PJ: You mentioned your parents. They’re both doctors—were they always encouraging of your acting career?

PJ: You’ve worked with some incredible people in television and film, some really big names, including Jessica Lange, among others.

AA: My mom was always encouraging of it; my dad: ‘You’re a smart kid, you can do so many things. Acting is such a tough career, why do you want to put yourself through that?’ But he eventually switched and got onboard. This last episode that aired, it ended at 10:00 pm; at 10:01 he called me: ‘Alright Amir, that was something’. It gave me goose bumps. My mom’s been encouraging me since I was eight years old, first telling me ‘You have talent!’ After a while when people would ask me, ‘are you going to be a doctor like your parents?’ she would say, ‘no, he’s going to be an actor,’ before I could even answer. She saw my love for it and encouraged me.

AA: I’ll never forget working with Jessica Lange on American Horror Story. That was a front row seat to mad excellence.

PJ: I’d heard that very early on, you ad-libbed a line and it was very well received. AA: Yes, that was with Michael Watkins. I remember the line: Meera Malik [played by Parminder Nagra] and Donald Ressler [played by Diego Klattenhoff] run out of the room at the end of a scene after Aram just gave them the location of the target, and I noticed the director didn’t say ‘cut.’ I was alone in the room and didn’t have any more lines, and I knew they could always cut away in editing, so I just said ‘thank you, Aram,’ pointing out that the other characters didn’t thank me, and they still didn’t cut, so I then said ‘you’re welcome,’ and I’m now having a full conversation with myself on a network drama [laughs]. I thought there was no chance they were going to keep that, but I heard from a lot of the writers that that’s when they started to get excited to write for Aram. Truly a miracle. PJ: And it kept growing from there? AA: This last episode [at the time of the interview] that aired on January 7th was more story than I ever, ever could have imagined getting on the show, and it was really challenging material—it stretched me and it pushed me—and every couple of episodes, every season, I’m seeing more. Just like the beginning, I make sure to never ever take it for granted and continue to work hard. Every actor should know that a good script is a gift and they should relish that. As you get more and more opportunity, the confidence grows, but you also have to remember that every actor is replaceable and it can end at any moment.

I did some commercials when I was 16, and when my dad saw they were sending me residual checks, he said, ‘They’re sending you more money? Okay, maybe you want to do more of this!’ The best part, though, as I got older, was when I was struggling, he never told me to quit. He would say, ‘This is your chosen profession. You have to work hard, study, show up.’ There is no good fortune in my life that isn’t a direct result of my parents’ love and my upbringing. PJ: You have a very strong theater background. Is theater your first love, and do you think you want to return to it in the future? AA: I did a play a year and a half ago, and I recently did a couple of theater readings. One of the great things about doing Blacklist is we are in New York, so I can reconnect with the theater community. I just did this crazy reading of a satire for the Williamstown Theater festival with David Hyde Pierce and an old friend of mine, John Pankow, and all these incredible

actors, and I loved it.

PJ: Would you say she was one of the most exciting, talented people you’ve gotten to work with? AA: Absolutely. Interesting human beings are complicated, and funny, and strange, and so are great actors. Jessica Lange, James Spader, Lena Dunham—these are three of my favorite people who I’ve gotten to work with, and they’re all remarkably different. As an actor, your first job is to listen; when the person opposite you is incredibly dynamic or fascinating, it’s very easy to listen to them. So if that’s the type of actor you’re working opposite, the easier your job is. It’s a treat. I always think of acting like a ping pong match; hitting the ball back and forth, and if you’re hitting the ball with someone really great, it raises your game, too. PJ: Tell me about your upcoming movie, Jane Wants a Boyfriend. AA: I shot that while I was doing season one [of The Blacklist]. It’s a really sweet romantic comedy, or dramedy, about a girl [Jane] on the autism spectrum, played by Louisa Kraus, who is wonderful. Her older sister, played by Eliza Dushku, is the overprotective sibling, and I play her fiancé, Rob, who is trying to get this marriage and his job on track. His best friend, Jack—played by Gabriel Ebert, an incredible Broadway actor and now a good friend of mine too —is a player, so to speak, who wants to ask out Jane against all odds. It’s all very sweet, and CONTINUED

had a great team, it was lots of fun. It’s coming out in the spring. PJ: And that’s not the only film you’ve got coming out, right? AA: I did another movie this past summer called Before the Sun Explodes, where I play this creepy, needy, hapless guy, kind of a stalker. I’m not allowed to say specifically, but I can tell you it’s premiering at a very big festival soon. And then there’s my labor of love—my first short film that I produced, directed, and acted in, this past summer—which is also just getting to festivals now and will be premiering soon. It’s called Fortress and it was written by an incredible playwright named Anna Ziegler, and a lot of my Blacklist colleagues helped me make it. PJ: So is that something you want to do more of in the future [producing and directing]? AA: I’ve directed a little in the theater. I’m happily employed as an actor right now, but I do

plan on directing more and more. I look at some of the actor/directors, especially in television—David Schwimmer, Andrew McCarthy, Laura Innes, Eriq La Salle—they were all on shows that did well, which allowed them to direct. So that is an aspiration of mine. I do love storytelling and being at the helm; it engages a different part of me than acting does—my intellect, my organizational skills, vision in a different way. Andrew McCarthy told me he finds ‘acting less stressful, but more anxiety producing, whereas directing is less anxiety-producing, but way more stressful.’ I have found that to be very accurate. PJ: And you teach as well, correct? AA: Yes, that was a goal of mine. When I got The Blacklist, I knew there wouldn’t be a lot of time for other acting roles, so that’s when I said I would pursue some other professional goals in my life, like directing and teaching. I had just said to the universe, ‘I really want to do some teaching in my spare time.’ And then out if the blue, a dear friend of mine, Yvette—she works at a company called Broadway Workshop—she came to a play

of mine and said, ‘Do you teach, by any chance?’ I said, ‘how are you knowing to ask me this right now?’ Within a few weeks I’d taught my first class at Broadway Workshop, which takes a lot of teens and pre-college students who do theater. I love it. PJ: Does it remind you why you love acting? AA: 100 percent. Working with young actors, it reminds you of the purest joy and urge for storytelling. And the high you get—they’re sitting on something that they want to express, and they don’t fully know yet how to express it, and I remember that feeling. It’s so great when they get it, when they’re working on something and you see that they have talent, and you encourage them and get their flame up (the candle metaphor is back!). It’s often hard for us to give ourselves permission to do something scary. Actors have to give themselves permission to go for it, both in career and in acting choices. Younger actors are often afraid to do that, so it feels natural for me to encourage them, and to see them break through is very rewarding.

Theater “Everyone’s got to see Hamilton,” he says. “I’ve seen it twice and it really is the real deal.” On Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show’s creator: “We’re witnessing one of the special ones.” (We agree!)

Around NYC Amir clearly adores the city. “I just love walking around SoHo, the West Village, Park Slope, Greenpoint, Williamsburg,” he states. “I love all of the restaurants, and just walking the streets.”

Beyond New York When asked about some of his travel favorites, he says, “Everyone’s got to go to New Orleans at least once. Austin, San Diego, and San Francisco as well.” Beyond the major cities, he points out, “I’m from Florida, and the Florida beaches are great. And you have to go to the Keys at least once.” Upon further thought, he adds White Sands, New Mexico to the list. “I went cross coun-

While there’s very little time for personal pursuits, given his demanding schedule, Amir says he’s very focused on health. “I have to be,” he says. “Blacklist is such a beast…between all of the studying, prep, and shooting, you have to take care of yourself, for the stamina. Also, he’s just a great trainer.” February 2016 • Resident • 71

n 1477, construction of the Sistine Chapel as it stands today began, and it was completed in 1480. A generation of some of history’s greatest artists decorated its walls; its original ceiling was a dark blue studded with golden stars. Decades after the chapel’s construction, Pope Julius II decided he wanted a new ceiling fresco, and looked to Michelangelo.

be seen through a private tour. There simply isn’t a side of Rome you can’t see through City Wonders.

Michelangelo begrudgingly accepted the commission under two conditions: that he could have complete artistic liberty, and that no one could see it until it was complete. He began the work in 1508, and four years later, one of the greatest masterpieces of all time was unveiled. Standing under this magnificent work of art is spectacular; for most who visit, it’s a dream come true. Imagine being in the presence of historical, artistic genius, of staring up at it for the first time, feeling the weight of its significance and pure beauty.

This means skipping the line at the Vatican and being the first to roam its hallways and set eyes on that remarkable ceiling. It means delving into the underground world of Rome, touring dark 2nd century catacombs, and experiencing the Colosseum through the eyes of a gladiator—areas not open to the general public.

Best of Rome Walking Tour

Now imagine being the first person inside it that day—of standing there in the silent Sistine Chapel, with only a handful of people alongside you, alone with your thoughts. It’s enough to bring anyone to tears. This is the type of experience you get when you book a tour with City Wonders. City Wonders offers exclusive, intimate tours throughout Italy, France, and the UK. They’re 74 • Resident • February 2016

Thanks to my City Wonders experience in Rome—an incredible introduction to the city—I not only saw and learned more in four days than most people will in a month, but I was able to fall in love with the city by seeing it through the eyes of those who know its secrets. City Wonders offers dozens of exclusive tours, including day trips from Rome to Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius, Tuscany, and Capri. There are food tours, tours for families, and themed tours (i.e. the Official Angels and Demons Tour). And should you wish to have an even more exclusive experience, most of their offerings in Rome can

While I could write for days about the intricacies of each tour, and how every moment of each one I took inspired and amazed me, here are just a few of their offerings:

Arriving in a city like Rome—so full of history and treasures—can be overwhelming; where do you begin? This tour is the perfect introduction to the city’s highlights, and gives you a great overview, allowing you insight and understanding while walking through the heart of it and getting the lay of the land. Instead of wondering where to start on my first day, my expert City Wonders guide taught me about the history of the Spanish Steps, the Piazza Navona, the wondrous Pantheon, and the breathtaking Trevi Fountain, among other gems. Along the way we stopped to drink out of fountains that carry fresh water from 2,000+-year-old aqueducts, roamed through piazzas and past numerous ancient structures, and of course, took a highlyanticipated gelato break. I threw a penny over my shoulder into the Trevi Fountain, which was for a very specific purpose: it means I’ll return to Rome. After this tour I knew I’d want to return again and again.

Colosseum Underground Tour with Arena Floor, Third Ring, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill I was traveling with a small group of people, all of whom were visiting Rome for the first time. When we were driving to the Colosseum and it first came into view, we all gasped. Then, when we skipped the line, toured its hidden treasures, and learned all about its construction, the lives of its gladiators, and its role in ancient Roman life, we felt its history come alive. Our tour guide, Sev—an Aggregate Professor of Roman Topography at the Third University of Rome— was brilliant. Not only did he lead us through the structure (which was inaugurated in the year 80 A.D.) and its closed-to-the-public areas (the Arena Floor and the Third Ring), but he took us on a virtual tour through its existence. We learned, for instance, about the stolen treasures that were used to construct it, about where each type of Roman citizen sat and what they ate, and that, during shows, gladiators and citizens condemned to death fought lions, panthers, tigers, crocodiles, and each other. My tour of the Colosseum, followed by the equally incredible Forum, a marketplace that reached its heights between the years 27 and 14 B.C., was one of the most fascinating experiences of my life.

entrance, skipping the lines and walking into an empty Vatican. Over the next few hours, your small group and tour guide (once again, my guide was a wealth of knowledge) travel through all areas of the smallest country in the world—the holy site of Christianity and home to the Pope, which actually dates back to the 1st century A.D. You’ll learn everything about its evolution, its governing from ancient times through today, and its art work while enjoying a visual feast. You’ll be blown away by the Sistine Chapel before its thousands of other visitors arrive, see priceless masterpieces, visit the Rafael Rooms, and marvel at the size and splendor of St. Peter’s Basilica— within which is Michelangelo’s Pieta, which, I learned on the tour, Michelangelo secretly signed, then later regretted doing so. You’ll also gain access to the Bramante Staircase, which is closed to the general public. In summary, you’ll see one of the most magnificent places in the world in the absolute best way possible.

This one-and-a-half hour night tour leads you through the dark heart of the city and includes stories and tales not told on other ghost tours.

This four-and-a-half hour tour includes skip-theline, no-wait access, limited group sizes, special access to the Bramante Staircase, and audio headsets.

This two hour class includes small group sizes, six glasses of wine, and a selection of paired delicacies chosen to match the wines.

Rome Ghost and Mystery Night Walking Tour Rome is a city full of dark secrets and ancient mysteries: murders, public executions, hauntings, and heretics. On this tour, our expert guide—who knew everything there is to know about the underbelly of the Eternal City’s history—led us through quiet cobblestoned streets, across a supposedly haunted bridge, and around sites and squares where legendary tragedies took place. It was an inside look at the lesser-known, beneaththe-surface Rome, and it was awesome.

Gourmet Wine Tasting and Food Pairing Class This is a hands-on tour of Italy’s food and wine, all from the comfort of a private wine library, where you learn about its best flavors by tasting them (be prepared to enjoy the best pesto of your life). As you taste six different wines from various regions of Italy, each paired with exceptional foods including rare handmade cheeses and an incredible aged tuna (and that aforementioned life-changing pesto), an expert sommelier guides you through all aspects of Italy’s wines, bringing a new level of appreciation for the best food and wine in the world. You’ll learn, for instance, that there are 1,855 varieties of wine planted throughout Italy—and that you’ll probably enjoy them all.

There are a host of other tours and opportunities provided by City Wonders, and they’re all unique. What they all have in common is that they give you incredible insight into the very best wonders of the world’s very best places. If your experience seeing Rome via City Wonders is anything like mine, you’ll feel as if you didn’t see Rome, but lived it, and subsequently loved it the way the locals do. For more information:

HOTEL DE RUSSIE Rome’s Best Work of Art

A

rt washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life,” Pablo Picasso said.

the Italian identity of the hotel, its location at the heart of the bustling capital.

In February 1917, he visited Rome with his friend, the poet Jean Cocteau, while planning the staging of a ballet. They stayed at the Hotel de Russie, and, legend has it, leaned out of the windows of their adjoining rooms to pick oranges. Today, that same hotel is a member of Rocco Forte Hotels and continues to host a plethora of A-list clientele.

Choosing accommodation here is, in effect, like choosing portraiture. But choose wisely: The Nijinsky Suite is a luxurious bedroom-bar-librarysalon donned in royal purple; the Picasso Suite, with its separate office, is a combination of work and play; the Popolo Suite offers complimentary buffet breakfast on its wraparound balcony; the Vaselli Suite offers an unparalleled walk-out over the Secret Garden. So will you be getting glammed up inside the Nijinsky’s mosaic bathroom, reading a book by Picasso’s window, or dancing on Vaselli’s terrace on your wedding night?

The rooms speak openly of the aristocrats who used to sleep in them. The Nijinsky Suite bears the name of the talented Russian ballet dancer and choreographer; the Picasso Suite speaks for itself; the Popolo Suite references the Piazza del Popolo, which it overlooks with a view words cannot describe; the Vaselli Suite brings to mind

Dinner is served at Le Jardin de Russie amid roses and orange blossoms. The restaurant’s twoMichelin-star Chef Fulvio Pierangelini is himself

a storyteller when it comes to langoustines, pasta, Ossobuco with Crispy Saffron Risotto. In his 2014 Mad Symposium speech, he underlined the necessity of “sensorial semantics” in cuisine— the cook’s responsibility to form a language with his dishes, a conversation—and today that same conversation Chef Pierangelini extends to the guest. Drinks are served at Stravinskij Bar, a popular meeting spot for locals and foreigners alike with its own private piazza. The bar has a menu of signature cocktails—Lapsang Martini (Bombay Sapphire gin filtered on Lapsang Souchong tea flowers and softened with orange essential oils), Pochito Picante (Tequila Ocho infused with ginger and cucumber, lime juice, passion fruit, and smoked paprika), and Stravinskij Spritz (Prosecco, passion fruit, wild berries, and orange

slightly spiced) are just a few—in addition to homemade iced tea to quench that hot-Romannight thirst and a “simpler” food menu to go with the drinks (“simpler,” of course, means a lavish spread of seared Mediterranean prawns, veal tartare, and lobster). And then there’s the setting. Up the stairs from a walled courtyard where people chat in lantern light, await 2,800 square meters of terraced gardens designed in the early 1800’s by Guiseppe Valadier—the same architect who redeveloped the Piazza del Popolo. If there are places in the world that act as entryways into fairytale realms, this is one of them: Stone steps flanked by moss and green vine wind through palm trees, yews, and white roses, then disappear. There’s a reason the Hotel de Russie is a favored wedding destination.

Guests can get the best of both worlds: rare photo opportunities at locations like the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Saint Peter’s Basilica, plus the intimacy of a private ceremony. A professional wedding planner will handle the table settings and the timeline while Chef Pierangelini records the lovers’ vows in a personalized menu. Then De Russie Spa can tame the nerves with its salt water hydropool, Finnish sauna, steam room, relaxation suite, hair beauty corner, state-of-theart gym, and six treatment rooms. Washing “away from the soul the dust of everyday life” happens daily at the Hotel de Russie—a tiny canvas of large, colorful narratives. For more information:

Paradisus Cancun from Above

PURE LUXURY, PARADISE INCLUDED Paradisus Resorts in Mexico Redefine the All-Inclusive Experience

I

t was midway through my first night at Paradisus Cancun—while enjoying one of the best meals of my life—that I realized this place was something special. At most all-inclusive resorts, a good meal comes with a follow-up statement: “the food is good… for an all-inclusive.” Here, while dining at Tempo, the resort’s restaurant by Chef Martin Berasategui—who holds a combined seven Michelin stars—I realized everything I knew about resorts of this kind would have to be rethought. Paradisus has three resorts in Mexico: the aforementioned resort in Cancun, and two side-by-side properties in Playa del Carmen (one for families, one adults-only). All three are all-inclusive, and all three are like no other I’ve been to before. Of course for me, the realization began with that sublime meal at Tempo, but the recognition of being somewhere special continued throughout my trip, and my expectations were constantly exceeded. I stayed at the properties in Cancun and Playa del Carmen; I can’t possibly pick which one was my favorite, but I can definitely say all were exceptional.

Paradisus Cancun

Paradisus Cancun This is not the Cancun you remember from your Spring Break days; this is where you go to be pampered, indulged, and spoiled in all the right ways. From the turquoise waters of the white-sand beach to the four lagoon-style pools and nine restaurants, the atmosphere is pure paradise. Within the sprawling pyramid structures that make up the property, it’s difficult to distinguish the indoors from the outdoors. Lush greenery and hanging vines, along with flowing koi ponds and abundant palm trees, bring the Mexican tropics inside, creating an intimate oasis, despite the resort’s size. And while Tempo by Martin Berasategui is in a league of its own—it is rated the number four restaurant in all of Mexico—all nine restaurants and five bars surprise and delight the most discerning diners (read: New Yorkers). I couldn’t resist a third trip to the lunch buffet at Naos, and the gazpacho and vegetable quesadillas at La Palapa were both the best versions of those dishes

84 • Resident • February 2016

I’ve ever had (as was the peach daiquiri!). There’s also fresh sushi at Bana (served on a Zen terrace), upscale, authentic Mexican food at Mole, Latininspired cuisine at Fuego, and an oceanfront Italian-Argentine experience at Market Grill—to name a few. Avenue Bar offers cocktails, small bites, and sea views in a chic, intimate setting, while Red Lounge provides entertainment every day and night, all in a sexy atmosphere rivaling the hottest NYC lounges. But back to Tempo—an experience I won’t soon forget. The nine-course tasting menu with wine pairing began with Prosecco and two amusesbouche and continued with extraordinary dishes such as Truffled Egg Yolk with Basque Carpaccio and Liquid Herbs Salad; Black Garlic Beet Ceviche, Marinated Salmon in Nori and Horseradish Cream; and Grilled Butterfish over Truffled Spinach, Crab Gelatin, and Foamed Champagne. The Master Sommelier paired each course with excellent wines, and every dish came with its own homemade bread and butter pairing. Tempo is not included in the stay at Paradisus Cancun (and is open to non-guests), but is an absolute must.

Another must is the Yhi Spa, where relaxation and bliss are inevitable. There are two types of treatment rooms—some of them free-standing Balinese massage cabins within the Oriental Garden—and the entire spa experience serves as a vacation within your vacation. They recommend arriving at the spa up to an hour before your treatment to take full advantage of the wellness experience, from the sauna and steam room through to the experience showers, stone massage foot path, and water ritual spa pool. This, followed by my 80-minute Yhi Mandala Experience (a full-body hot stone massage), erased months of stress and proved to me why the spa is named after the goddess of light and creation; I felt renewed in every sense. (Completely unique to Paradisus Cancun, there’s also a charming Yhi Spa for Kids, where little ones can get manipedis, facial treatments, and haircuts). This sense of lavish indulgence permeates the entire property, and while this is true for everyone staying here, it’s especially the case for Royal Service and Family Concierge guests.

With an added level of exclusivity, Royal Service at Paradisus Cancun is most definitely suited for royalty. Within a separate adults-only environment, Royal Service at the resort begins with a glass of champagne upon private checkin, and extends throughout every aspect of your stay. Should you need anything at all—from your clothing unpacked and ironed to your complimentary minibar replenished at your whim—your personal butler will take care of it. Privacy is the key here, as well—there’s the private Royal Service lounge with all-day cocktails and snacks, access to private Bali beds on the beach, the private pool with a bar, and the RoyalService-only beachfront La Palapa restaurant— where it’s never crowded, and always VIP. Royal Service Suites also bring an extra bit of luxury to your stay. While all guest rooms throughout the property are spacious and feature a private balcony and a minibar that’s replenished daily, Royal Service Signature Suites—ranging from junior suites all the way up to the 3,431-squarefoot Presidential Suite—boast added space, amenities, concierge services (including pool and concierge services), and even personalized pillow menus. Similarly, Family Concierge offers a range of added luxuries for guests traveling with kids. From the private check-in in a lounge stocked with premium cocktails for parents and gourmet

sweets and treats for children, to the Paradisus Kids Beach Kit that’s presented upon arrival, it’s clear Family Concierge guests of all ages are about to be spoiled. The one-bedroom suites are loaded with special touches for kids—including Johnson & Johnson bath amenities, child-size robes and slippers, and nightly turndown service with milk and cookies—and like Royal Service guests, those who choose Family Concierge have access to their own butler. For all Paradisus Cancun guests, there’s tennis, nine holes of golf, a Baby Club and Kids Zone, multiple shops, and service by staff members who bend over backwards to ensure your vacation is superb in every way—which is just another example of how Paradisus resorts are truly one of a kind.

Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Perla & La Esmeralda To say that there’s something for everyone at the two all-inclusive Paradisus resorts in Playa del Carmen is almost an understatement; there is indeed something for everyone, but there are also unexpected luxuries you never even knew you wanted. Here, too, I was absolutely blown away by another Martin Berasategui tasting menu and spent time indulging in the quiet serenity of the private Royal Service swimming pool. But I also

Paradisus Cancun’s La Palapa Restaurant

found myself enjoying a seemingly bottomless champagne tasting at the Moet & Chandon Corner, soaking in an oversized Jacuzzi on my balcony, taking part in an impromptu poolside tango lesson, and marveling at the art-inspired contemporary design details. Paradisus La Perla is adults-only and La Esmeralda is for families; they’re separate resorts linked by a shared common area that includes several restaurants—so while you never have to venture to the other side if you don’t want to, it’s all within your reach and you’re welcome to enjoy it. After all, with a combined 14 restaurants and 16 bars, there’s a good chance you’ll want to do some exploring. Like Tempo at Paradisus Cancun, multiple-award-winning Passion by Martin Berasategui is exceptional, and proved to be one of the best meals I’ve ever experienced. But there are also never-ending options ranging from overflowing buffets to Mediterranean food at Vento, Latin-fusion at Fuego, wood-fired pizzas at the Market, and multiple spots for outdoor food, frozen drinks, and sunshine. There are also restaurants and bars specific to each resort—families will find child-friendly restaurants with stroller-parking outside the door, while adults can enjoy several kid-free options. As the sun sets over the Caribbean, various venues come alive, including the sake bar at Soji, the tequila-lover’s Blue Agave, and Gabi Club Bar, a glowing outdoor nightclub on the beach that’s reminiscent of the celeb-filled watering holes of Miami and Ibiza. After an evening partaking in the Paradisus nightlife, once again, the Yhi Spa comes to the rescue. This 19,000+-square-foot oasis offers a full range of services, from blissful massages to anti-cellulite treatments and a full beauty salon and fitness center (including yoga, Pilates, and spinning classes), as well as a complete thermal circuit with wet and dry saunas, hydro massages, and plunge pools. It’s simply impossible not to relax here. Just like at Paradisus Cancun, Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Perla offers the ultimate VIP experience in the form of Royal Service, an adults-only boutique style resort-within-a-resort with numerous added benefits, including butler service to meet your every desire, private access to Royal Service beach and pool areas (with beach and pool concierges; want your sunglasses

Here, too, the Royal Service suites provide even more space and pampering. While the resort itself offers more swim-up suites than any other in Mexico, a Royal Service Luxury Junior Swim Up Suite offers up private access to the pool via your large balcony (complete with whirlpool) and a host of other amenities. In fact, all Royal Service Suites come with countless special touches—imagine coming back to your suite after a day at the beach and finding your whirlpool tub filled with bubbles and surrounded by rose petals. Back at Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Esmeralda, kids are welcomed, indulged, and pampered as well. Treasure hunts on the beach, pirate parties, climbing walls, game rooms, and inflatable pool toys keep them occupied and happy—while daycare services can give mom and dad the afternoon or evening off. Family Concierge is available here as well, and brings with it all of the luxuries as at other Paradisus resorts, including private check-in, butler service, and personalized concierge services to meet the needs of all family members. children, couples seeking romance, even solo solitude-seekers—yet combined, Paradisus La Perla and La Esmeralda somehow manage to deliver on every level, and promise the best of a luxurious tropical getaway without compromise.

Love, Marriage, and Life Enrichment There are a few aspects of the Paradisus experience that are unique to the brand, and are available at all properties. Romance by Paradisus is one of them. Their Romance Team delivers the ultimate in love-filled getaways, from the “I will” to the “I do” and everything in between. There are a range of destination wedding, honeymoon, and anniversary packages available, with unique offerings ranging from private “Under the Stars” dinners to beachside ceremonies and poolside celebrations. For brides, the Yhi Spa Bridal Suite is a little piece of heaven: a glamorous, feminine retreat where champagne and cheese platters are accompanied by makeup applications, manicures, pedicures, massages, and body masks. It’s reason

enough to take the plunge. And whether love is in the air or not, there’s another Paradisus treat that’s unique and extra special: Life Enriching Experiences. Offered throughout the resorts, these are one-of-a-kind programs and activities offered every day to guests that are designed to maximize their time away and enhance their stay on many levels. They include wine and tequila tastings, dance classes (pole dancing, anyone?), eco-walks on the beach, sushi-making classes, horseback riding, and much more. When you’ve traveled a lot and enjoyed many experiences, it’s nice to be surprised, and exciting to have your expectations exceeded. Paradisus surprised me at every turn, and delighted in every way. Santorini

Love in Imerovigli,

SANTORINI’S Hidden Gem

S

antorini is a splash of delight with its pearly white architecture adorned with bougainvillea, blue domed churches, and picturesque windmills overlook a sparkling sea. Photos of this Greek paradise attract couples from around the globe; as newlyweds, we were no exception. We dreamed of sipping wine while watching the sunset from our private balcony; we craved isolation, comfortable accommodations, exceptional service, and fine dining. We discovered this and more at Pegasus Suites & Spa in Imerovigli. Imerovigli is an unassuming, tranquil village located a mile outside the bustling capital of Fira. Its name is derived from the word vigla, which means lookout, and it couldn’t be more accurate.

This quaint hamlet offers unobstructed panoramas, and features charming chapels built on the rocks, stretching towards azure waters. While hotels and eateries are plentiful, you rarely spot tourists. Its central location provides easy access to essential points on the island. Pegasus, one of the upscale resorts carved amphitheatrically within the cliffs, is known for its cavern-shaped rooms, attentive staff, and exclusive, luxurious suites. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted by the energetic concierge. He sat us down in the lobby balcony, handed us champagne, and offered detailed recommendations. But it was the surreal view that mesmerized us. The mid-day sun transformed the sea into gleaming diamonds,

as the majestic volcano lay dormant in the clear Aegean. When the staff delivered our luggage to our Deluxe Plunge Pool and Indoor Jacuzzi Suite, we were instantly transported to a modern, opulent version of The Flintstones. A sizable domed living room awaited us, painted in the symbolic blue and white of Greece, with a daybed and our own wireless router, along with a fridge loaded with liquor and local treats. Every door and window opened up to the private pool and stellar view. The bedroom contained a plush, circular king bed rising from a stone platform, adjacent to a tasteful bathroom with his-and-hers sinks and a rainfall shower. Walls held remnants of the volcanic rock from which

Although we could’ve lounged by the pool, we had calories to burn. We put on sunscreen and hats, and set out on the pedestrian path that hugged the edge of the caldera towards Fira. We walked safely along the mountainside, chatting with fellow honeymooners who shared tips about the island. Halfway through our journey, we took a respite from the sun in the shops of Firostefani. Browsing souvenirs, we perched on benches and strolled down cobblestone streets. At the open air Vanilia Bar and Restaurant, we feasted on peppers stuffed with rice and vegetables, a tangy tzatziki dip, and lightly breaded tomato balls served with galotiri cheese. This eatery boasts invigorating Mediterranean cuisine set before the vastness of the Cyclades.

the suite was sculpted. In the rear rose a glass enclosure with our own hot tub. The next morning, a clear blue sky, the cobalt sea, and the ancient caldera (volcanic cliffside) waited beyond our front door. An orange tabby lingered a few moments, traipsing along the patio, taking in the scenery. The refreshing pool was inviting, but so was the delectable breakfast delivered to us. Trays arrived on our balcony brimming with steaming coffee, refreshing fruit juices, plates of thinly-sliced smoked salmon, savory spinach pies, eggs over easy, and a basket of freshly baked bread. We devoured our meal in terrycloth bathrobes, caressed by the swaying breezes of our idyllic abode.

The following day, we were picked up by Santorini Sail Cruises for a voyage around the outer islands of Thirasia and Aspronisi and a stop at the volcano. At the port of Ammoudi, we met our captain and boarded our 51.2-foot yacht. Over the next five hours, we saw a side of Santorini few experience. Making several stops to frolic in the refreshing waters, we sailed to a soundtrack of Greek favorites and smooth jazz, making friends with fellow couples and sharing our stories. The highlight was the exhilarating swim to the hot springs, where the cool waters of the Aegean melded with the therapeutic, warm waters. For lunch, we savored a succulent meal of lemon chicken, mouthwatering seafood linguini, and crisp Caesar and Greek salads prepared onboard by the crew. Our small group gratefully raised our wine at the foot of Palea Kameni, the ancient volcano, before returning to our resort. Car and ATV rental agencies are plentiful on Santorini and we opted for a smart car for a day trip to hot spots on the island. While it slowly carried us over winding roads to fascinating destinations, including the working archaeological site of Akrotiri and the spectacular Red Beach, it was challenging ascending steep ridges and

making sharp turns on the island’s mountainous landscape. However, when we reached the lighthouse, one of the oldest in Greece, at the southern peninsula of Santorini, staring at the expansive view of the caldera and the white villages atop, our troubles were quickly forgotten. Aside from exploring, we adopted the Greek tradition of eating and drinking to our heart’s content. The evening meal is a big deal to Greeks who gather to dine, drink, and converse well into the wee hours. Thankfully, with several highly rated restaurants near Pegasus, we had plenty of choices. A short walk brought us to Avocado Restaurant; its cozy, romantic atmosphere was ideal for sharing zesty tomato fritters with spearmint oil and creamy Santorini tartar sauce and, of course, an avocado salad over candlelight. Their tasty fava bean falafel and freshly caught fish of the day were true pleasures. Just steps away from the resort, we stopped for something sweet at the Aegeon Restaurant, where the fig ice cream and Vinsanto (after dinner beverage) were the ideal palette cleansers. We returned the next evening at sunset for fluffy mushroom risotto, tantalizing sardines, and hearty moussaka paired with a magnificent local Assyrtiko wine. Our legs sore from climbing the island’s endless staircases, we booked massages at the spa, a softly lit sanctuary of peace and serenity. The caring masseuse performed her duties masterfully, ensuring our comfort with the level of pressure and areas of concentration. Floating back to the suite, we found ourselves napping on the balcony chairs, cherishing each other’s company in precise harmony, infused by the magic of the natural surroundings, content for having begun our lifelong journey in this Mediterranean utopia. QUAIL HILL VINEYARD

A Fine Wine Experience in Sonoma, California

T

he beauty found at Lynmar Estate is unlike any other that can be found in the wine country of California. After traveling the globe, Lynn Fritz and his wife, Anisya, found their home in Sonoma. The community experience found at Lynmar, when paired with their high quality wine and food, serves as the perfect backdrop for this breathtaking venue. The components of Lynn’s vision of a new artisan winery model serve as a testament to the prodigy that is Quail Hill Vineyard. Lynn says, “The wines speak for themselves, but in the words of the consumers on our subscribers list, ‘they are the best of the best.’”

Pinot Noir & Chardonnay Grapes Perched in the heart of the Russian River Valley lies the picturesque Lynmar Estate, the pride and joy of Lynn Fritz, the proprietor of this iconic vineyard. A San Francisco native, Lynn first purchased Quail Hill Ranch in 1980, drawn to the breezy seafaring climate and the beauty of the plunging vineyards. Originally a home away from home, it was a place he frequented throughout his life to reconnect with loved ones. “I used to visit Russian River as a child because that was a big place for families to go together before the days of country clubs,” Lynn says. “The grapes 90 • Resident • February 2016

do so well because the maritime influence is perfect for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. I love the area and I was so happy to own something where part of it was already planted.” Each time he returned to Lynmar, he planted new trees and bushes, slowly transforming the location from a pasture to a vineyard with lush gardens and indigenous flowers and trees.

Food Friendly Wines With vines over 40 years old, Lynmar’s state-ofthe-art, gravity flow winery and caves allows for a pristine wine making environment, ensuring that their wines always meet the ultra-premium standards that their subscribers expect. “I’ve always loved Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They are the most food-friendly wines,” reveals Fritz. “Many people were scared to plant this close to the ocean until the Russian River was discovered. After growing grapes, which were sold to exclusive wineries for the next 15 years, it was clear that our vineyard could grow some of the best wines in the world.” With that certainty Lynn then built his own winery in 1994 on what is now the 100-acre Lynmar Estate. “I waited 15 years to see how good this site really was. It’s like discovering you have a child prodigy,” he says with a laugh. “I knew I would have to spend the

rest of my days seeing that it reached its potential. I say that because I recognized what rare good fortune, I had been blessed with.”

The Red Wood Grove “The primordial pull of wine is its relationship with food, so food had to be part of the equation,” Lynn explains. “It’s the ultimate acid test, literally and figuratively.” In July and August, Lynmar offers a Picnic Pairing for guests, a favorite seasonal offering where you can partake in a fresh farm-to-table lunch with a special pairing of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Some of the summery selections to be sampled include their harvest salad, mixed greens with Persian cucumber and heirloom tomatoes all picked right from the grounds, and their gourmet grilled local chicken breast sandwich on Village Bakery focaccia, with cheddar and a blackberry-chive aioli. For something a little more substantial, head over to the beautiful Redwood Grove for the Pinot & Pizza pairing menu featuring pizza made in on-site ovens fired with Pinot Noir-ingrained oak barrel staves inoculated with Chardonnay yeast and an innovative selection of their award-winning red wines. New Orleans

BY BARRY BASSIS

Travel to

NEW ORLEANS

& Let the Good Times Roll

T

he piece of wisdom I picked up on my latest trip to New Orleans is “If you don’t start drinking in the morning, you can’t drink all day.” Of course, the remark was tongue in cheek, but many do join the party and have a specialty cocktail with their breakfast. The Big Easy is a place to unwind and celebrate. I tend to stay in or near the French Quarter but away from the noise of Bourbon Street. My base of operations for five days was the Maison Dupuy (www.maisondupuy.com), located on a quiet residential street a couple of blocks away from the clamor. The staff is exceptionally helpful and the hotel is modern and clean, while conveying a sense of the past with its artwork depicting local sights. During my December visit, the lobby was decorated for Christmas. One nice touch is the free coffee and tea in the mornings and the water infused with fresh fruit, offered for the rest of the day. Other amenities include a heated pool and fitness center. From the hotel, I walked to all but one of my meals (Commander’s Palace in the Garden District, a bus or cab ride away). For my last day, I moved to the Bourbon Orleans Hotel (www.bourbonorleans.com), also on a quiet street in the French Quarter. This snazzy hotel (with a heated pool and fitness center) is a member of the New Orleans Hotel Collection. Guests are welcomed with a free drink at the bar. There is also an excellent on-site restaurant, Roux, where I dined on my last trip. The main reason that New Orleans is my favorite American city to visit is the food. Within an hour after my plane landed, I was seated at Galatoire’s (www.galatoires.com), where the waiters are dressed in tuxedos and jackets are required for male diners. This is a venue for special occasions; it was announced that a couple was celebrating their 50th anniversary and everyone applauded and sang happy anniversary. The same thing happens for birthdays. The menu is classic Creole with some new ideas: a duck crepe with boursin reminded me of my mother’s blintzes. The redfish with crabmeat Yvonne was sublime, and the meal ended with bread pudding in whiskey sauce. Breakfast at Brennan’s (www.brennansneworleans.com) is world famous and justifiably so.

New Orleans

Executive chef Slade Rushing makes sure that traditional dishes are up to par and has brought in new ones of his own. The refreshing Mr. Funk cocktail is made with cranberry juice, peach schnapps, and sparkling wine. I continued my seafood obsession by starting with barbecued lobster (served out of the shell in a mildly spicy sauce) followed by black drum fish topped with crabmeat. For dessert my choice here is always Bananas Foster, which was created at Brennan’s and is still prepared tableside. Luke (www.lukeneworleans.com) is celebrity chef John Besh’s brasserie, which served one memorable and unique dish after another. I never liked Brussels sprouts until I tasted his crispy version. That was followed by stuffed oysters and then jumbo shrimp served on cheese grits. The meal ended with a Pavlova dessert, which Luke makes with pomegranate seeds. (I picked up a copy of the Besh Big Easy cookbook and can’t wait to try some of his recipes.) The Court of Two Sisters (www.courtoftwosisters. com) presents a bountiful brunch buffet with about 80 dishes. The children’s buffet (with chicken tenders, mac and cheese, etc.) is a nice touch. There is also traditional jazz by the Amy Sharp Trio (bass, clarinet, and banjo), playing swing tunes. When the weather is good, sit in the lovely courtyard. The most innovative meal—and also among the tastiest—was the one prepared by master chef Tariq Hanna at Salon by Sucre (www.restaurantsalon.com). There is a pastry/ice cream shop on the street level, but upstairs is a restaurant and lounge, where they serve lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner. In addition to the cocktails and wines, the menu has both grazing dishes (delicious sliderettes, charcuterie, and artisanal cheeses) and large plates (I had scallops with olives, bacon, and potato dumplings). For dessert, a molten 94 • Resident • February 2016

chocolate soufflé was sinfully good. I was relieved that the way out involved going down a staircase rather than up. Commander’s Palace (www.commanderspalace. com), in the Garden District, is a must and the jazz brunch is especially joyful, with balloons on the tables and a number of families with children. An appetizer of three cups of soup (turtle, gumbo, and butternut squash) is a nice sampler. Pecan-crusted gulf fish was exceptional and, for a dramatic finish, creole bread pudding soufflé with whiskey cream sauce. Mr. B’s Bistro (www.mrbsbistro.com) is another great restaurant owned by the Brennan family. Barbecued shrimp, served in their shells with peppery butter sauce, is a messy delight. Waiters supply diners with bibs for this dish and I certainly needed it. Braised rabbit, falling off the bone, was a rare treat and profiteroles were a refreshing end to another wonderful meal. Several of my days began with a visit to Café du Monde in the French Market for café au lait and beignets, which are served hot and covered in powdered sugar. Antoine’s (www.antoines.com) has been in business for 175 years, so they are obviously doing something right. This is the place to eat Oysters Rockefeller, since it was created here. The cuisine is French-Creole and the snails (escargots Bourguignon) and soft shell crabs almondine I had were from the French side. For dessert, why not the signature dish: baked Alaska? It’s rich and tremendous. Before Katrina, on each of our visits, we dined at Alex Patout’s Restaurant on Royal Street. After ten years, he has now returned to New Orleans and is happily ensconced at New Orleans Creole Cookery (neworleanscreolecookery.com), which

he runs along with two members of the Tusa restaurant family: A.J. and Anna Tusa. It was my last dinner in the city and so I had to overindulge: shrimp remoulade, crabmeat maison, duck and oyster gumbo, a baked crab cake, eggplant casserole with crabmeat and shrimp, and finally, bananas foster bread pudding. Welcome back, Alex!

Sightseeing Visitors should reserve the better part of a day to go through the World War II Museum (www. nationalww2museum.org). You will learn about the heroism and sacrifice of “the greatest generation,” in bios, artifacts, and first-person narratives. The exhibits also reveal the brave African-American soldiers who fought despite segregation back home, as well as in the army, and the Japanese-Americans who risked their lives while their families were sent to internment camps. There is an immersive movie experience that will make you feel as if you are in the midst of battle. The Historic New Orleans Collection is worth a visit for a peek into the city’s past, and Audubon Aquarium of the Americas displays the incredible beauty of sea life. On every trip to the Big Easy, I attend a performance at Preservation Hall. This time, I caught a performance by trumpeter/singer Leroy Jones and his group, playing holiday songs and chestnuts from Louis Armstrong, such as “When it’s Sleepy Time Down South.” For information on New Orleans: neworleanscvb.com Facebook (New Orleans), Twitter (@ NewOrleansCVB), and Instagram (NewOrleansCVB) For Christmas specific posts, go to www.followyourjoy.com and #FollowYourJoy. CHECKING IN

All Glitz and Plenty of Glam

T

here’s no time like the present to plan a trip to Las Vegas. In addition to the bustling casinos and high-end restaurants, one of the most highly anticipated shows on the Vegas Strip just opened last month. Jennifer Lopez’s “All I Have” residency, located at the AXIS Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, proved to be the hottest ticket in town and I was fortunate enough to attend this show, putting Hollywood glamour front and center in the city of sin. Complementing the glitz and glamour of the show was my stay at the Cosmopolitan Hotel conveniently located directly across the street from the AXIS Theater. One of the trendiest hotels along the Strip, the Cosmopolitan is located in the center of the action and provides their guests with plenty of options beyond the roulette wheels and slot machines. The hotel is comprised

of two sleek towers blending together nightlife, fine dining, and shopping under a sparkling visual feast for the eyes. Their Chandelier Bar glitters with Swarovski crystals and stretches over three floors. The modern hotel design spills over into the guest rooms with open bathrooms, wraparound terraces, and designer furnishings. Originally designed as condominiums, these rooms and suites are much roomier with nice amenity touches like a kitchenette and microwave. For me, the option to have a terrace in your room was the added plus. In a city where most hotel room windows do not open, it was refreshing to be able to step outside to take in the magical views of Vegas. The hotel also has two fitness centers (one of them 24-hour), three swimming pools, and a Sahra Spa and Hammam, all complementing the outlandishly decadent vibe of this hotel. Their restaurant collection features some of the

most notable options in the world of fine dining today. Scarpetta, Milos, Blue Ribbon, and the soon-to-open Beauty & Essex restaurant allow their guests to enjoy fine dining in the confines of the hotel. The Cosmopolitan has quickly established itself as one of the trendiest spots on the Strip where high rollers, foodies, and fashionistas mingle together throughout the evening and into the early morning hours. The Jennifer Lopez “All I Have” residency runs through the end of June and I highly suggest a quick visit to Las Vegas to check out both the concert and the hotel, two of Vegas’ shining stars. DINING IN WONDERLAND

3 Extraordinary Culinary Experiences in London to Taste in 2016

ike the literary character Alice, a visit to London offers many unique experiences and a few gastronomic rabbit holes into which—lacking good advice and information—a visitor can fall. On your 2016 visit to this iconic city, place these three dining opportunities at the top of your list and depart with a smile to rival that of the invisible Cheshire Cat.

Mirror Room at Rosewood, london An architectural wonderland in its own right, the recently opened Rosewood Hotel sits in High Holborn, at the intersection between the legal, media, and original financial districts of London. The interior décor offers the visitor a high-end sense of wonderment not seen since the millennium opening of the Sanderson Hotel or the refurbished Savoy. The Mirror Room possesses both exquisite décor and ambience which keep pace with the style, quality, and excellence of the work of Executive Chef Amandine Chaignot and her staff. The new menu, “Citrus and Winter Root,” which offers a rustic interpretation of English and French cuisine, has been designed to awaken the senses with an array of fresh and intriguing seasonal root vegetables, citrus fruits, and fresh herbs, presented with a flourish that Heston Blumenthal, the George V in Paris, and Il Bulli stalwarts would appreciate. Lavo

LAVO’S RIVIERA SUNDAYS

And Rocco Ancarola, Who Makes it all Possible

I

t’s been called “One of the 10 Most Unique Dining Experiences in NYC,” and has hosted the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Jamie Chung, and Flo Rida. It’s part dinner theater, part dance party, part sexy theme soiree. It’s Riviera Sundays at LAVO, and it’s made Sunday the hottest night of the week. So what makes the Sunday experience at LAVO so memorable? In part, it’s the food: delectable cuisine, with dishes ranging from Imperial Wagyu carpaccio with black truffle vinaigrette to a selection of handmade Kobe beef meatballs and grilled branzino panzanella. It’s also the performers: professional dancers (ballet, belly, and burlesque, to name a few) who are true artists. And there are plenty of other reasons why guests are crazy about this enthralling event— for which the theme changes every week. But really, it’s all thanks to Rocco Ancarola, the man who created it, hosts it, and makes sure every single detail of it is perfect. Born in South Africa to Italian parents, Rocco came to New York as a young man to pursue his dream of acting—a dream he’d had since the age of five. He immediately took acting classes, studying with some of the most legendary, iconic acting teachers, including Shelley Winters at the Actor’s Studio. This led to roles in commercials, a short stint in Los Angeles (during which he starred in the Madonna “Oh Father” music video), and an audition for the role as a maître d’ in Wall Street, after which Oliver Stone said to him, “wow, you’re really good!” and offered him the part. At the same time, while working as a young actor in NY, LA, and back again in NY, Rocco worked as a waiter in various restaurants, including Mezzaluna, and in some of the hottest nightclubs in the city. He opened his first restaurant, Ciao Bella, on the Upper East Side (“The Upper East Side was the it place to be back then,” he recalls, laughing “we didn’t even know what Tribeca was.”), which stemmed from his experience in

the restaurant business and having grown up watching his Italian father lovingly prepare food. From there, he created a unique concept—a restaurant/nightclub with world cuisine, which he named Boom; It was an instant success and regularly won awards. including the John Mariani Esquire Award for Best New Restaurant in the U.S.A. “I’m a guy who gets very bored,” he shares. “I have to dance on tables. So I started dancing on tables, and there I am, dancing on tables while people are having dinner.” This, he says, became a phenomenon, and in many ways, his signature. This love for the party, the excitement of it all, led to Rocco opening Pink Elephant, which was

people a night out, as well as a night that was filled with local New Yorkers (devoid of the bridge-and-tunnel crowd). This reputation, experience, and ingenuity was why the TAO Group people—who own LAVO— first approached Rocco, asking him to join them in the business and host Sunday night parties. He brought his love of theatrics, his passion for Fellini movies, his desire to be different, and his years of success, and created Riviera Sundays, incorporating music and dance from all over the world and bringing Broadway-level talent to the dining experience. It took off immediately and has grown since its beginnings; now there’s a costume designer, a makeup artist, a talent recruiter, and a different theme every week, chosen by Rocco. It’s a true extravaganza. And while the LAVO Riviera Sundays won’t be ending anytime soon, Rocco is adding plenty of new ventures to his roster. He’s currently working on a book about his experience in the restaurant business, as well as a movie—a love story about his parents.

undoubtedly one of the hottest nightclubs in the world, and included several Hamptons and international outposts. At the same time, he was throwing parties all over the world—in Rio de Janeiro, Punta del Este, Mexico City—and a millennium New Year’s bash in Havana that people were literally banging down the gates trying to get into. Rocco and his parties were worldwide phenomenons, frequented by celebrities and international A-listers, adored by the world’s biggest names in nightlife. He first started offering live music at Boom, and Lenny Kravitz was a regular. Prince would come every week, and one night he decided to play, borrowing the electric guitar a Brazilian singer had brought. Boom was where the Sunday night party concept was born as well—he saw the need for a party that offered restaurant and nightclub industry

This continuing drive can be attributed to many things—not the least of which was a health scare a few years ago that brought him near death, a tear in his aorta that his surgeon told him was practically impossible to survive. Now, he says, “I don’t take life for granted; we are not invincible. I’ve always been a churchgoing person, but now I go every Sunday, and I thank God every day.” He goes on to say that he “got a second chance in life. There’s a reason I ‘m alive. I want to help people.” This includes telling his loved ones to take care of themselves, and working with various charities, including the American Heart Association. It also, of course, includes showing people from all over the world the time of their lives, each and every Sunday night. For more information:

BISTRO CHAT NOIR

French Flavor, Southern Charm, and New York Romance at its Best

W

ith the warm, romantic atmosphere of a classic French bistro, one of the best locations in all of Manhattan, outstanding cuisine, and the unique blend of French expertise and Southern hospitality, Bistro Chat Noir is something very special. Nestled inside a 1939 Louis Candela-designed townhouse, Bistro Chat Noir is the passion project of owner Suzanne Latapie and is the embodiment of her Southern roots. A native of North Carolina, Suzanne moved to New York City in hopes of becoming a dancer and was first introduced to the restaurant business while coat checking and waiting tables between auditions. Working her way up both ladders, Suzanne became one of the first personal trainers in Manhattan while also holding maître d’ positions at some of the most revered French restaurants in the city. After a ten year stretch as the general manager at La Goulue, a dining institution for the well-heeled of the Upper East Side, Suzanne decided to realize her own vision for a restaurant and opened Bistro Chat Noir. The France-meets-South Carolina spirit of Bistro

Chat Noir is evident in the warmth of its space and its people, and the quality of its food. The atmosphere is elegant yet comforting, and the menu is refined yet approachable. Chef Mario Hernandez uses the finest ingredients—many locally sourced—to present superb dishes such as delectable escargots in delicate puff pastry with herb-garlic better; rich mushroom soup with a truffle brioche crouton; the much-loved farro lobster salad with hearts of palm, mango, walnut, red tobiko caviar, dried cranberries, and sweet curry dressing; and the dish that keeps customers coming back again and again: red wine braised Meyer short ribs with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprout leaves. Brunch at Bistro Chat Noir is delightful; goat cheese soufflé with white truffle oil, a spicy quinoa burger, and grilled vegetable lasagna join classic bistro and brunch dishes such as a fluffy frittata, coq au vin, and sinfully good mac n’ cheese.

tartares and salads to the organic Creole chicken, wild salmon, and Branzino served with cauliflower gratin, lighter dishes promise rich flavor with less guilt. The warm, ambient light, crimson banquettes, handmade bronze sconces, and collection of French oil paintings further enhance the atmosphere and match the beauty of the food. This romantic French feel makes Bistro Chat Noir the ideal setting for a special Valentine’s Day celebration. Nothing says “je t’aime” quite like superb wine and French cuisine served in a setting straight out of a French movie. Suzanne Latapie has created a unique dining experience—a true standout in a city filled with excellent dining experiences. With her one-ofa-kind blend of Southern charm and French finesse, Bistro Chat Noir delights on every level. For more information:

BUSTAN

A Modern Israeli Gem

T

oday, Israel is one of the world’s top dining destinations. With culinary night markets and highly acclaimed restaurants that rival the best in the world, the country’s food scene is on fire. And right here on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Tuvia Feldman and her restaurant, Bustan, are serving modern cuisine to match that of the country from which they take their inspiration. As Feldman’s partner, Executive Chef Jose Paulo Cortes produces dishes that impress on every level. Out of the restaurant’s custom hand-built wood-fired rotating brick taboon emerge exceptional dishes. These include a moist-on-the-inside, crispon-the-outside whole branzino, infused with herbs, and thick, fluffy pita—the perfect vehicle for

traditional Mediterranean sweets: for instance, a Turkish sundae topped with crisped rice, caramelized nuts, and shredded halva.

Other standouts—drawing influence from multiple international cultures, much like Israel itself— include crispy, phyllo-dough wrapped soft egg burek on a Jerusalem artichoke with chestnut cream, chanterelle mushrooms, and truffle oil; squid a la plancha, served on thin pancakes of grilled polenta with matbucha; grilled hangar steak with tahini-baked potato and caramelized shallots; and lamb terracotta baked in a bread crust and cooked with charred onion, roasted tomato and peppers, sumac, oregano, tahini, and pine nuts. Desserts include unique spins on

Inventive cocktails perfectly complement the cuisine, such a fig lemonade, made with houseinfused fig vodka. To match the colorful, flavorful, delightful food, the space pops with just the right amount of color, and a warm, inviting glow. There’s a winterized garden, a sleek bar, and a sense of vibrant hospitality and a love of life that’s exactly like the spirit of Israel. For more information:

TWO FROM VAN HOVE AND A STUNNING COLOR PURPLE FROM DOYLE A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE

I

vo van Hove may be the busiest director in New York this season. Currently running at the Lyceum Theater is Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge, an import from England, where it won an Olivier Award for Best Revival. So, do we really need a British cast led by a Belgian to present a play about a Brooklyn longshoreman? The answer is apparently “yes” when it is done with such an original slant. Van Hove presents the work starkly, basically without scenery (or strangely, footwear). Performed in two hours, without intermission, the feeling of impending tragedy is overwhelming. Mark Strong is superb as Eddie Carbone (the longshoreman who falls for his wife’s teenage niece). Problems start when two immigrants (relatives from Italy) sneak into the country and come to stay with the Carbones. The girl falls in love with one of them and this drives Eddie crazy. He goes Donald Trump on the illegals. The build-up with a percussive background keeps the audience on edge.

A View from the Bridge could have been called 108 • Resident • February 2016

An American Tragedy if Dreiser hadn’t already used the title. The revival should be a contender in the Tony’s.

LAZARUS Van Hove is also strutting his stuff off-Broadway with Lazarus at the New York Theatre Workshop. Here, the director (assisted by video designer Tal Yarden and sound designer Brian Ronan) shows he has as much flair staging musical numbers as dramas. The songs are by David Bowie and include some of his greatest hits, including “Changes” and “All the Young Dudes,” as well as new songs. Unfortunately, you have to put your mind to sleep for the dialogue that comes between the numbers. Bowie had played the title role in the science fiction film, The Man Who Fell to Earth. Based on a Walter Tevis novel, the movie concerns an alien named Thomas Newton, who comes to Earth to obtain water for his planet. He is stranded and becomes an alcoholic recluse. Lazarus is a sort of sequel with Michael C. Hall playing the character 40 years later. Newton hasn’t aged, but the other characters from the film are long gone. Hall may be a better all-round actor than Bowie,

but the rocker is more convincing as a nonhuman. The cast is excellent; all can sing well (especially Hall, Cristin Milioti, and Sophia Anne Caruso). Enda Walsh, who wrote the charming script in Once, is on this occasion “Lost in Space.” A plain revue of Bowie songs would have been much more enjoyable.

THE COLOR PURPLE John Doyle is known for taking classic musicals and presenting them in stripped down versions, usually with the actors playing all the instruments, as in his revivals of Sweeney Todd and Company. With The Color Purple at Bernard R. Jacobs Theater, he has a traditional orchestra in the pit and has eliminated most of the scenery. With a powerful blend of songs and script, the show has the audience whooping and hollering as if they are at a revival meeting. Cynthia Erivo as Celie delivers a “star is born” performance and Jennifer Hudson is a force of nature as Shug Avery. The whole cast is outstanding and this production brings out all the beauty and wit in the score by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray and the book by Marsha Norman, from Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel.

Brittany Fogarty

By Carlos Lacayo

5-year-old model Brittany Fogarty will join the cast of Mob Wives, the popular VH1 show, which resumed airing on January 13th. After studying business at Temple University, she started to model and walked the runway for top designers and pals Michael Costello and Andre Soriano.

reality show. “I was born into a family of crime, so that’s how they brought me in. I think the show was looking to pull in a younger viewership, she says, adding “youth is intimidating to the older women on the show; I’m in the prime of my life. We handle things differently and that’s when a lot of clashes happen.”

Brittany is the youngest cast member on the hit

Unlike some of the new women on the show,

Fogarty’s connections to the mob are ingrained in her blood. When she was 18 months old, her family relocated from Staten Island to Pennsylvania after her parents were targeted for their involvement in organized crime. Brittany’s father, John Fogarty, was arrested for drugs after getting caught with more than 100 pounds of marijuana, and her mother, Andrea Giovino, who the media has called the “real-life Carmella Soprano,” was arrested for loan sharking and hit with RICO charges. Her father cooperated with the authorities and her mother’s prison sentence was spared. Brittany remembers meeting her father in a crowded visiting room in the Fairton Federal Prison and singing to him: “I remember my father holding me and singing, ‘Tomorrow’; I used to love the movie Annie,” she confesses. Brittany and her siblings grew up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, which is miles away from Staten Island and Brooklyn, where most of the Mob Wives’ cast spent their early years. When John Fogarty was released from prison, it was a shocking experience for Brittany. “I was not used to having my father around. He kind of showed up at our doorstep when I was 11 and said, ‘Hey, Dad’s home.’ That was a little shocking for me.” Brittany is currently working on her relationship with her father and says, “The blood flowing through my veins is historically mafia.” She goes on to say, “My father and Sammy ‘The Bull’ Gravano were very close and my mother hung out with John Gotti, so there is a strong connection with the mob.”

On what we should expect to see happen this year, Brittany confided, “This season is different because in addition to myself there is another new young cast member and it throws a wrench into the season. There is going to be a lot of drama ” She laughs and explains, “You might look at me and think ‘oh she’s this nice little sweet blonde girl’ but meanwhile, I am half Irish and half Italian and they say we have the wildest tempers. I am a nice person and will be super nice to you until you give me a reason not to be, then my crazy mob wife/daughter background comes out. My mom raised me in Pennsylvania, but at the snap of a finger that Brooklyn would come right back. People would look at me and expect me to be a dumb model, but I’m not. I am quick witted and quick with my mouth. It’s going to be a good season.”

In 2004, the American Heart Association faced a challenge. Cardiovascular disease claimed the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year, yet women were not paying attention. In fact, many even dismissed it as an older man’s disease. To dispel the myths and raise awareness of heart disease & stroke as the number one killer of women, the American Heart Association created Go Red For Women, a passionate, emotional, social initiative designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health. This February, the AHA will once again highlight women with its Go Red For Women campaign. What is Go Red For Women? Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association’s national campaign to increase awareness of heart disease — the leading cause of death for women — and to inspire women to take charge of their heart health. The grassroots campaign has since grown into a vibrant national movement as more women, men, celebrities, healthcare professionals and politicians embrace and elevate the cause of women and heart disease. The yearlong campaign provides women of all generations with tips and information on healthy eating, exercise and risk factor reduction, such as smoking cessation, weight maintenance, blood pressure control and blood cholesterol management. “Our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends are at risk. Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. Fortunately, we can change that because 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action” stated Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, spokesperson for the American Heart Association and cardiologist and director of Women’s Hearth Health at the Heart and Vascular Institute, Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. Go Red For Women inspires women to make lifestyle changes, mobilize communities and shape policies to save lives. United, we are working to improve the health of all women. Get informed about the risks of heart disease and stroke. Know the red flags. Know your heart health story.

FACTS ABOUT CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES

FACT 4: Women who are involved with the Go Red For Women movement live healthier lives. DALE NOELLE

TRUE Model Management’s Fearless CEO

F

ormer model and current owner of TRUE Model Management, Dale Noelle earned a degree in business at the Fashion Institute of Technology, but adapted the non-traditional idea of mixing personal interests with professional endeavors to create a profitable model management company that is growing rapidly. The formula for her success is simple: create a caring corporate culture. As Noelle puts it, “I genuinely care about the people I work with and focus on their health and happiness. When our employees and models are healthy and happy, the clients are happy, which results in a pleasant working environment and more business.” Previously a model for Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta, and many other reputable designers, Noelle founded TRUE to oversee her own career, but transitioned to managing other models when pregnant. “I was pregnant and diagnosed with [oral] cancer so I was forced to stop modeling, but I didn’t want to stop working altogether. In fact, throughout my career, I had introduced many industry professionals to each other so when I opened TRUE, it was a natural progression for me to more formally connect them as a manager.” From day one, Noelle focused on creating a supportive culture. “Modeling can be a very harsh and demanding business, not just in terms of appearance and physical endurance, but also on a model’s psychological well-being,” she 114 • Resident • February 2016

explains, adding, “we strive for a nurturing environment and have become very selective about the models we sign.” In alignment with Noelle’s nature and to fill a void in the market, Noelle and her team “carefully screen the models [because] we like models who are role models. We seek models who are beautiful inside and out with positive attitudes and internal fortitude.” Once at TRUE, they become “part of the family,” says Noelle. Noelle’s efforts are paying off. “We often receive feedback from clients informing us that we have the kindest, most thoughtful and professional models,” she says. TRUE’s reputation has helped it become one of the world’s top fit modeling firms and, in 2015, the company greatly expanded both its commercial and lifestyle print board, and its Curves board. Three star Curves models, Rosie Mercado, Melinda Parrish, and Danielle Braverman, are widely sought after for public appearances. For all three, Noelle explains, “it’s their stories; they are incredibly strong, smart, and inspirational women.” Mercado was turned down by model agencies because of her size, but TRUE saw her potential and signed her before she lost over 200 pounds and supported her through her journey of healthy dieting and exercise. Noelle and Braverman both overcame anorexia and are also advocates on behalf of positive body image. Noelle and TRUE

work with the National Eating Disorders Association to raise awareness about eating disorders. Parrish is a writer for Huffington Post, is an advocate for body positivity and created #healthyatanysize to further promote body positivity. The attention the models receive has affirmed for Noelle “models can make a difference, and be role models on and off the runway.” In addition to running TRUE, Noelle connects the company and models with charities and the community. “I have always been involved in philanthropy and I strive to give back even more to the community through TRUE,” she says. Noelle helped organize a charity bike ride from Vermont to New York to raise money for pancreatic cancer and pediatric AIDS research. More recently, Noelle was elected as a board member of The Women and Fashion FilmFest and TRUE organized their first Girls’ Empowerment Fashion Runway show to educate and empower young girls. On a more personal note, Noelle is in talks with Dr. A. Ross Kerr at New York University’s College of Dentistry to be the public face of oral cancer awareness and she’s a donor to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. For some companies, expansion can threaten their culture, but Dale Noelle’s fusion of personal passions and professional goals ensures this won’t be the case for TRUE Model Management. David Simon

By COUNTESS Nathalie von Bismarck BARIMAN

The Lion of Twin Capital Management,

DAVID SIMON

W

hen I first met David Simon, I instantly felt the presence of a kind-spirited lion. It was clear that David—a tall, handsome man—carries a strong and rare energy, and I wondered where this energy came from. David is a classic example that anything can be achieved if you put your mind to it and simply believe. He always felt larger than life, and his path in life granted him the capability to be fearless like a lion.

David does this work purely to help others, and he prefers to remain private and discreet. Rather than discussing his achievements, he likes to talk about his beliefs. For him, life is a voyage, and its milestones are learnings. “The smartest person in the room can learn from everyone in the room,” he says, “whether it may be a taxi driver, janitor, or investment banker, while the dumbest person in the room thinks he knows it all and will learn from no one.”

David was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, and lived there with his parents and sister until he was five, when the family moved to Livingston, New Jersey, into the house he’d call home for his entire childhood. Since his family did not have a lot of extra money when he was growing up, he worked from the time he was 10 years old. He had paper routes, folded the Sunday papers at the local stationery store, and at 13, got a job at the local car wash. When he turned 16, he got a job selling shoes at the local mall. He worked as lifeguard at local swim clubs during the summer months until he turned 20, when he took a bartending job at one of the best restaurants in the area. When it came time for college, his mother drove him to two that were next to each other and told him to pick one; David chose the one with a better female-to-male ratio. He went on to law school, subsequently graduated at the top of his class, and was hired at a top law firm in New York City. He knew then that he did not want to practice law, but had to use law to leave law. He made connections on Wall Street from whom he got referrals, and turned them into 150 meetings with various people. This led to two offers for Merger Arbitrage positions, which was what he wanted to do. When asked why he shifted away from law, David softly smiled and explained that when he was in law school he thought he wanted to be an entertainment lawyer. After a summer internship at a top entertainment law firm in LA, he realized he did not respect the profession or the way large firms were set up at that time.

116 • Resident • February 2016

A sensitive man, David’s children are the most important thing in his life. The memories of raising his children are his most valuable ones. From holding them at birth and coaching his son in sports to bringing them to Broadway shows, he cherishes them. All this makes David love his life; he is also a spiritual man, sticking strictly to his Jewish religion, which gives him a sense of belonging and stability.

“Big firms want you to work your hardest to become a partner, and when you do become a partner you work even harder, without a significant increase in compensation. In addition your time is never your own. I also disliked what I did as a first and second year attorney, which made it hard to get out of bed to go to work in the morning,” David said. Today, the self-made David Simon is best known for his achievements as founder of Twin Capital Management LLC, a New York City-based Hedge Fund. But at the same time, he is a true philanthropist. Since 1996, the David Simon Foundation provides funding to charities focused on children and overcoming poverty. Also in 1996, David co-founded the Starlight Children’s Foundation Westchester Golf Outing with Michael Brown, which he ran for three years, raising about $500,000 for the charity. Additionally, from 1999 to 2014, David co-founded and ran the HELP USA Westchester Golf Outing with Kenneth Cole and Peter Hochfelder, which raised over eight million dollars.

His love for New York City brings him energy, his love for nature brings him peace. He enjoys walking in Central Park and taking in all of the interesting people, observing and learning from them. While he is an accomplished man, the striving will never end. He feels that for him it is only the beginning, and intends to continue stretching himself with new ventures, new ideas, and continuous charity and educational endeavors. He also cherishes his true friendships, and says, “your true friends are the ones you made when you were young, when you became friends from a mutual fondness for each other. I think 90% of my true friends I have known for at least 25 years. It is very special, yet hard to meet a new friend at this stage of my life.” But his intentions are to leave himself open to new people. He tends to follow his instincts and is very loyal to all his friends. Once I got to know David more, I understood why I felt the presence of a lion when we met, and I have no doubt that anyone who meets David would feel the same way.

Both were warm, open, and engaging. They had lived in New York City, but now reside in the country. Daughter Brittany, a model and current cast member of a running reality show (Mob Wives), and mother Andrea Giovino, a published author and animal rescuer, wanted to share their story with me. Andrea is a devoted animal lover. I knew right then and there my readers would be fascinated. Their story and her love changed my opinion of Dutch, a loving pit bull. The story unfolds as Andrea opens her door seven years ago, and standing there is her son Keith. He had been visiting friends at a college frat house, when he noticed they kept a 10-monthold pit bull in the basement. The dog had not been walked, was starving, and was just skin and bones. They let Keith have the dog. In his heart he wanted to keep the poor dog, but did not have the time. So what’s a son to do? Bring the pooch to mom, of course. He told her it would only be for a short time, but Andrea knew this was it. Her heart was breaking for this poor abused puppy, who was ill fed and ill

Dutch changed Andrea’s life, and changed my opinion about pit bulls. Every time a dog is blamed for bad behavior, instead look to the owner. It’s not easy taking on a pit bull; it is a lifetime commitment, but a very rewarding one. As Andrea’s children have grown and moved away, Dutch is her champion and best friend. Freddy the cat, Dutch, and Andrea have a wonderful life together. They all rescued each other. Jane Pontarelli and her pup Lulu

trained. Andrea knew then that this was not a temporary situation, but a lifetime commitment. Dutch, as she named him, had several behavioral problems. He would constantly mount people and was a big-time nipper. Also, Andrea had a cat named Freddy in their home, and was afraid that Dutch would hurt Freddy. She grew to love Dutch, and found that love does conquer all—at least in the puppy world. Andrea had to separate Dutch and Freddy for six months. Three times a week she took Dutch for intense training sessions She never gave up on Dutch and knew she could bring out the good

Signature Kitchen Suite

By Steven Cornelio

Your Signature Style, with

SIGNATURE KITCHEN SUITE

W

hen you’re in the kitchen, it can be for multiple reasons: cooking, talking, laughing, impromptu photoshoots, or simply because it’s just your favorite part of your house. It’s a space that many love (and some avoid!), but regardless—we all have one. Some of us have to deal with limited space, while some of us can’t stop buying new accessories to fill our counters. What if we could truly customize our kitchens—beyond just the dish towels—to our own aesthetic, to match our personalities? Now, with Signature Kitchen Suite—there’s a solution to all kitchen frustrations that makes no sacrifices, maximizes space, and complements individual styles to a tee. Signature Kitchen Suite is a line of ultra-premium kitchen appliances coming to the market for the

first time this year. They teamed up with a coalition of tastemakers to launch the collection; The Signature Style house experts includes Lo Bosworth, “The Lo Down” blogger, foodie, and certified chef; June Ambrose, fashion Innovator and celebrity stylist; and Donald Robertson, also known as the famous Drawbertson who is a fashion artist and pop culture phenomenon. Each influencer and expert had the opportunity to create their own kitchen with Signature Kitchen Suite to showcase how customizable these kitchens are. We had the chance to learn more about the brand during their launch event on January 19th at the Las Vegas Convention Center. “Signature Style Kitchen Suite is really about a lifestyle” Lo Bosworth says, while talking about merging her brand and unique style with the

Kitchen Suite products, appliances, and design. “I’m a New Yorker who loves beauty, fashion, health, and wellness—so the aesthetics of everything really matter to me.” Bosworth has a passion for the culinary arts and for spending time in the kitchen, and now she gets to do it in style. The melding of the kitchen and her personal taste are a beautiful union of the two. However, it wasn’t all just the glam for Bosworth, but the necessity for functionality in a kitchen. “The top-of-the-line appliances, and how easy they make everything for me as a chef, is unbelievable,” Bosworth says. The Signature Kitchen Double Wall oven, which offers Wi-Fi capabilities, gives you the ability to turn on your oven before even arriving home, which cuts down the wait of pre-heating, and it even includes

a bottom rack that is able to move the food outside the oven—which saves home chefs from burns. The Signature Kitchen Suite three-door refrigerator is also big on sleek style, while offering as much as storage as possible. “The thoughtfulness put into these appliances is amazing,” she says. Other Signature Kitchen Suite appliances include:

-Signature Kitchen Suite Built-in Side-by-Side Refrigerator -Signature Kitchen Suite Slide-in Ranges and Cooktops -Signature Kitchen Suite Dishwasher -Signature Kitchen Suite Over-the-Range Microwave Oven Fashion stylist and Creative Director June Ambrose also shared with us her inspiration for her fashioninspired kitchen, which even includes Pantone’s pink of the season. “I always feel like style starts at home,” Ambrose states, explaining to us how Signature Kitchen Suite and a couture dress are so alike. “I treat food, the preparation of food,

122 • Resident • February 2016

and the style of it on a plate the same way that I’m preparing someone for the red carpet, and defining their image in the marketplace—which is exactly what finding your signature style is.” She explains that the collaboration between her design methods and designing a kitchen was so organic. Ambrose made it clear to us that the importance of having technology and design in fashion is just as important as having it at home, especially in a kitchen. The author, fashion forecaster, and mother needs a kitchen that is sleek, colorful, and modern, while still being safe and easy to use. “I think that people think of their personal style and their interior design style as two different things—and it’s time we stop doing that!” she states. In fact, a few years ago, Ambrose did an article with Essence Magazine on how to dress “stylishly sexy in the kitchen,” and the connection between food and fashion. She’s now come full circle, designing her own kitchen. “I’m all about punctuation in an outfit, taking a simple outfit and adding color through accessories, and you can do the same in this kitchen.”

Signature Kitchen Suite is the perfect foundation to customize and create a kitchen that matches your everyday routine and style. Most importantly, you’re not sacrificing the latest in modern technology, and the compact design ensures the appliances fit in any kitchen. “It’s an opportunity to get everything you’re looking for at once, and that’s what lifestyle is: getting everything you need at once,” Bosworth says. The Signature Kitchen Suite will be introduced in the U.S. market in early 2016, with initial availability at select Pacific Sales in Southern California, with plans for a broader rollout later this year. If you’re looking to do more in your kitchen than just cute dish towels and placemats, Signature Kitchen Suite is the ideal place to start. “Your home is an extension of yourself,” Ambrose says, and she’s completely right. Let’s take our passion for our outfit of the day and extend it to our kitchen design of the year. For more information:

BUYING & SELLING LUXURY With Gannon Forrester of TOWN Residential

A

fter six years as a top-producing and award winning real estate representative in New York, Gannon Forrester has brought his formidable talents to TOWN. A highly accomplished professional, a number of Gannon’s deals in recent years set records for the buildings they were sold in. However, for Gannon it all starts with his clients, whether they are high- profile celebrities, hedge fund managers, politicians and CEOs, or just regular folks looking for a first home in the city. Gannon is 100% devoted to them all, and makes it his business to keep them abreast of shifting market conditions, comparable sale histories and recent sales in their area of interest. Whether working with buyers, sellers or renters, Gannon ensures they are always fully informed and have every possible option available. Specializing in luxury condos, both sales and rentals, Gannon’s domain comprises premier Manhattan neighborhoods including the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side, Union Square, Flatiron, Chelsea and Gramercy. With his creative approach, affable manner, keen negotiation skills and unparalleled ambition, he is the ideal guide who knows New York’s condo market through and through. “Knowledge is the number one tool in real estate,” he says, and this is precisely what his clients get in abundance. Gannon grew up in New York City and received a BA from New York University. 126 • Resident • February 2016

A lover of the city’s architecture and atmosphere, he lives on the Upper East Side, where he is very comfortable amid the quiet treelined streets, the wide array of restaurants and of course-Central Park, where he can often be found strolling and admiring its beauty.

Resident sat down with Gannon to discuss the state of the industry and the ways NY buyers and sellers can make the best real estate decisions. Resident Magazine: Are there certain neighborhoods that are getting more attention recently, or that you’re especially excited about? Gannon Forrester: West Chelsea has been hot for a while, but this year it’s exploding. Luxury condos along the High Line are getting some of the highest prices per square foot in the city right now. It’s the downtown version of being by Central Park. RM: What advice do you have for first-time buyers in NYC? GF: Be prepared and ready to go. NYC moves very fast and a property that is priced well in a good location will have a lot of interest. If you are financing, have a preapproval letter. If you are paying cash, have your finances ready to go. Have a good NYC real estate attorney that can turn around a contract quickly and protect you at the same

time. As soon as you see something you like, pull the trigger right away and be the first person in. RM: Can you explain why—in the luxury Manhattan market—it’s so important to have a real estate agent who is very experienced and knowledgeable? GF: It’s the age of the internet and everything is transparent. There are a number of sites that can list every property. There is a difference between listing a property and marketing a property. When I represent a seller it’s about knowing who to market to and how to stand out from every other listing. I have to know the building and the area to come up with the correct price and strategy. When I represent buyers, it’s about knowing where to show a client based on the vibe they want. It’s also about building relationships. Having wonderful friendships with other luxury brokers and developers makes it easier for me to get appointments and negotiate when the time comes. I have a wonderful team behind me, including top lawyers, mortgage brokers, tax consultants, and my own private concierge that my clients have access to. All of that adds up to a great experience for my clients resulting in a quick and successful transaction. My sellers get higher prices quicker and my buyers are prepared and have a team behind them to easily acquire the property they want and beat out any competition from other potential buyers.

MIAMI 2016

5 Luxe Condos Breaking Ground this Year

T

here’s a whole new influx of luxury Miami condos that have begun construction this year—and they’re already attracting buyers who are drawn to their innovative design and exclusive appeal. Whether it’s a glassy skyscraper with ultraprivate amenities or a landmark building designed by an award-winning architect, anticipation for the b ustling Miami skyline is rapidly growing. Here are five of Miami’s most anticipated, exciting projects breaking ground in 2016:

Brickell Flatiron The latest project from renowned developer Ugo Colombo’s CMC Group, Brickell Flatiron is a new architectural icon bringing a culture of elegance and artfulness to the center of one of downtown Miami’s most vibrant neighborhoods. With its distinct flatiron shape and prominent position at the epicenter of the Brickell financial district, the 548-unit building was designed by architect Luis Revuelta and interior architect Massimo Iosa Ghini. Brickell Flatiron’s public spaces will be adorned with works and custom furniture curated by artist Julian Schnabel. The tower’s 64-story rooftop sky spa, pool, and fitness center will offer residents inspiring 360-degree panoramic views of Biscayne Bay and downtown Miami’s glimmering cityscape. Construction is expected to begin in early 2016. eightysevenpark.com 128 • Resident • February 2016

Eighty Seven Park Terra’s impressive boutique beachfront condo Eighty Seven Park is the first residential building in the U.S. designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano. Situated in Miami Beach’s North Beach neighborhood, the 70-unit development will be one of South Florida’s most exclusive and intimate residences—bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, a 35-acre public park to the south, and a two-acre private park to the north. Renzo Piano will be joined by project architect Stantec and West 8, which will lead the design of the property’s landscapes, as well as the surrounding public and private parks serving residents and their guests. Paris-based Rena Dumas (RDAI) will be creating the project’s interior and exterior living spaces. With site work already underway, vertical construction is expected to begin by the second quarter of 2016. eightysevenpark.com

Elysee Miami Designed by acclaimed architect Bernardo Fort-Brescia of Arquitectonica, the 57-story glass structure will feature a unique threetiered telescoping shape marking the tallest residential high-rise in Miami’s East Edgewater neighborhood. With 100 ultra-luxury units—only two per floor—every residence at the boutique building will boast direct 180-degree unobstructed views of Biscayne Bay, Miami Beach and the downtown Miami skyline. Elysee’s elegant design concepts are the creation of France’s top interior designer Jean-Louis Deniot, who has been recognized worldwide for his eclectic and emblematic interiors. With projects across the globe, Deniot has brought his unique sophistication to some of the most important residences in the world – including the restoration of the revered Château Latour winery for French business mogul François Pinault. Construction is scheduled to get underway by the second quarter of 2016. elyseemiami.com

uyers are snapping up a new offering of luxury condominium residences at Lennar’s 1200 Avenue at Port Imperial, supporting the notion that there is pent-up demand in the area for new condominium homes, particularly in an upscale, boutique setting that also boasts a waterfront location and spectacular Manhattan skyline views. Lennar launched sales at the new sevenstory building following the success of 1000 Avenue at Port Imperial, the first property to open in The Avenue Collection on Weehawken, New Jersey’s Hudson River waterfront. The response has been more of the same as buyers have expressed a healthy appetite for the new offering which features ultra-modern residences, upscale amenities,

Up Next for JOHN PETROCELLI CONSTRUCTION Best Contractor in the World

H

e’s the guy that makes people’s design dreams come true. He brought Paris Hilton’s dreams to life in her new SoHo loft last month, and he’s gearing up to renovate P. Diddy’s apartment on 56th Street. John Petrocelli of John Petrocelli Construction says if you can dream it, he can do it. Challenges are a sure thing in construction contracting. Petrocelli’s clients run the gamut when it comes to requests. Whether it’s a door that looks like a cabinet, a waterfall in the middle of a bedroom, or a projector that comes out of the ceiling and then tucks away with the tap of a button—he’s done it all. Those are the wishes he likes to grant the most. “When it’s difficult to do and others say it can’t be done, that’s when my radar turns on.” He adds, “I believe anything can be done.” 2015 was a great year for Petrocelli, and 2016 is looking to be even better. His full service construction management and general contracting firm has over 36 years serving the tri-state area. Petrocelli says that’s what sets him apart from many other companies—that, and it’s obvious to clients that he loves what he does, they can easily see his passion. “I think it’s really fun, I don’t think it’s work, it’s so enjoyable to me, doing something you love it’s like a vacation every day.” JPC has spearheaded countless high profile renovations in the best, most prestigious buildings in New York, like 907 5th Avenue where the reclusive copper heiress named Huguette Clark lived. They divided the huge lavish apartment into three separate ones. He also worked on the penthouse of Wendy and Steve Madden; JPC renovated the entire apartment. Next in the pipeline is a distin140 • Resident • February 2016

guished, limestone-clad, luxury apartment building on Fifth Avenue. This time, the building is the client. JPC will be adding a recreation area and meeting rooms on the ground floor. Petrocelli says he’s working on more than 20 major renovation and design jobs in 2016. It’s also about the team. “I have such a great crew,” Petrocelli adds. “We’re more of a hands on company than others. We’re available to clients for problem solving at any

time. Some companies will sell the job and then you’ll never see them again, we’re not like that.” And it doesn’t hurt to be adaptable. Petrocelli says when the climate changes, they change. Being adaptable to whatever the needs are, and having various services available to meet those needs has served the company well. With new technologies developing all around, it’s crucial to stay up on the hottest trends. Petrocelli says the new thing is everyone wants their homes to be digitalized. “Wireless stuff is happening all over the place, everyone

wants lighting systems connected to phones, and all-off buttons are really big. People don’t have to go around turning everything off when they leave their place, they just want to push a button.” Also, traditional is on its way out, informal is in. As is evident with the attire in the professional word of jeans and a jacket instead of suits and ties. “People don’t want to live in a museum, they want a practical living space.” Practical is something familiar to Petrocelli. “When we were kids, instead of getting toys we got tools.” Petrocelli’s father was part owner of a huge, privately owned electric company. From his early years he learned how to build. “We had to build everything ourselves, every time my parents had a new child— we built an addition to the house.” His father started a small company called College Electric so John and his siblings could work themselves through college. As John became hands-on at a young age, he always had a passion for the remaining elements of the construction industry. “We worked for everything we had, at the time I didn’t appreciate it but now I do.” Those entrepreneurial instincts are what make Petrocelli who he is today, leading one of the top construction contracting companies in New York. He makes it personal, putting himself in every job that he does. “I put myself in the clients’ shoes like I am building for myself, I do things that I would do for my own house.” And as far as the future goes, Petrocelli has a rather impressive goal. “I have a big sign on my wall that says my goal is to be the best contractor in the world. It’s a lofty one, but why not—we can do it.” For more information:
