LETTER from
THE EDITOR
I
t’s hard to believe that it’s already January and another year has come and gone—but there’s always a lot to look forward to at the start of a new year. Rather than looking at it as an ending, it’s best viewed as a new beginning, and an opportunity to start again.
This, of course, can seem a bit daunting; resolutions can bring pressure. So instead of focusing on grand ways to make major life transformations, I decided to make the theme of this issue all about small ways to add new experiences to life. With that idea in mind, and in the pursuit of the story, I discovered plenty of new places to go, classes to take, and luxuries of all sizes to indulge in. In fact, that’s one of my favorite things about this job—I constantly get to learn more about the city in which I live. My other favorite part of it is the travel. For this issue, I had the opportunity to go to a country I’ve never been to (Scotland) and meet wonderful people as a result. I also got to have my first ever golf lesson in the place where it was invented over 600 years ago. Finally, there’s perhaps my absolute favorite part of the job. Every month I have the fortunate opportunity to meet and interview someone who is incredibly talented and successful, someone at the very top of his or her field. This month certainly was no exception. Interviewing and getting to know Melissa Errico was such a pleasure. She’s funny, charming, and ambitious. She’s also insanely talented. And if that’s not enough, she’s one of the most open, giving people I’ve ever worked with. Someone with this much talent and success could have every right to be a bit arrogant, yet Melissa is the opposite. And it turns out, her equally successful husband, Patrick McEnroe, is equally humble and kind. They are quite the duo. So whether it’s taking a cooking class, checking out a new spa, visiting a country you’ve always wanted to go to (I’d recommend Scotland), or simply adding a new restaurant to your repertoire, I encourage you go head into the New Year with an open mind and a sense of optimism and adventure. Try a new anything or a new everything, New York.

Restaurateur Spiro Menegatos hosted a benefit at Nerai, his Greek hot spot on East 54th Street, for Floga, a charity that helps children suffering from cancer in Greece. Menegatos brought together a diverse mix of friends for a dinner featuring Executive Chef Chris Christou’s take on modern Greek cuisine to create awareness for the fact that as Greece falls deeper into recession, public funds dwindle and outside help is needed. Among the sponsors were Skyline Risk Management, Alma Bank, Preferred Merchant Services, and New York Bagel. Floga, the Pan-Hellenic parents association of children with cancer, embraces thousands of families all over Greece. The children sent thank you drawings to the donors. floga.org.gr

Chris Hemsworth looks very good in this blockbuster, but the 18th century sailboat, the sea, and the whale steal this movie from him. Hemsworth admits, “I didn’t initially know that it was based on true events. The script focused on this incredibly devastating experience that these men went through, and when I found out that it actually happened, I was hooked. I loved the way it was about so many things, like survival, the strength of the human spirit, man versus nature, ego, what drives you to survive…and so on.”
The Brooklyn Bar Association Fox News’ savvy legal analyst Arthur Aidala, who is also the 100th president of the Brooklyn Bar Association, gathered 50 judges and 800 lawyers together for a benefit for the organization’s foundation that has 2,000 members. Aidala introduced Mayor De Blasio, who spoke about the historic importance of the community. The honorees included Hon. Sterling Johnson Jr.; Hon. John M. Leventhal, Attorney Alan M. This is a great time of year to get sexy with accessories. Add an accent, pops of color, or that necessary edge. Forever 21 has several fab hats this season. Since the price is right, feel free to play the fedora field with their Wide Brim Wool Fedora ($25), together with Faux Leather Gloves ($10). For color in the office or a meeting, grab Vince Camuto’s Asymmetrical Hem Textured Sweater ($125). Now, that’s a wrap!
If in the middle of a winter binge of your favorite series, or diving into the deep end of your next big best seller, spoil yourself by slipping into Bed Head Pajamas Black Sea Island Cotton Classic ($286). Sexy Edge
In-Vested
What DITA does with eyewear, Norma Kamali does with couture. The women’s line dances on the gender edge, adding masculinity and or going fiercely feminine when necessary. The Skirt Midcalf ($100) has a great edge and that Kamali construction, while the Batwing Jumpshort is unapologetically sexy. ($50)
He Said! She Said!
Vests are everywhere this season, for sporty spice types and city slickers alike. ExOficio’s Calluna Fleece Vest ($80) & Storm Logic Vest ($125) can head in either direction. Even better, Storm Logic’s Vest & Coat ($200) both have DWR Teflon with water, wind, and oil repellency. The breathable Primaloft Insulation trumps down, as it retains 96% of its insulation when wet. This slim lightweight wonder packs a punch with a travel pouch that turns into an in-flight or in-office pillow.
Mountain Mama
Latico’s Carriage Bag ($240) is perfect for the planned weekender or impromptu overnight. It will stylishly stash what’s necessary, for professional or play, for him or her. Le Sport Sac’s Modern Voyager Backpack ($142) is the perfect backpack for urban gals on the go.
There’s a lot of brains behind this beauty. Mountain Hardwear’s Straight Chuter Jacket ($450) is oh so ski chic with its Dry Q technology. Calling All Collagen
Tria’s Age Defying Laser ($495) is making it possible to achieve those salon savvy results, in the comfort of your own home, at a fraction of the price. Their targeted beams of light work well below the skin’s surface to accelerate collagen and elastin production. It’s safe and effective and packs well in any carry on—the perfect pick-me-up for those long haul flights
Super Supplement
Apparently, our collagen is on the fast track to exit the body as early as age 25. Yikes! Many treatments and creams try to bring it back, while supplements are another way to replace what is often lost. I found and fell in love with Collageena ($129) while recovering from a double broken ankle. Their high nitrogen amino acids with pure collagen protein nourish cells with nutrients missing in most diets. That means being sated, with less of an appetite, more energy, incredible clarity and better skin, nails, and joints. There is cheaper collagen out there, but you are hard pressed to find better.

It’s the perfect home gift if looking to add more water, more sparkle, or simply cut back on your carbon footprint.

Charge Up! We are all quite keen on charging up our phones and tablets, but it’s time we make the effort to charge ourselves. The Finnish company Valkee launched Human Charger ($219) as a way to address the long dark nights of winter. The Human Charger sends UV-free, blue-enriched white light to where we need it most. It will address that flat lined feeling that we have after a long flight, no light, and passing one too many time zones. By being in sync, we then have less food cravings, better sleep, and a better sense of well-being. After too many hours indoors or one too many rainy days, you can simply charge up and get back in sync.

he hotel scene is ever-evolving and always changing—what remains constant is the level of quality you can expect from certain travel favorites. It’s seems the great ones, though, are getting even better, and travelers have a lot to look forward to.

Here’s a look at what’s new and exciting at two of our favorites.

The Fairmont Tastemakers include Grant Sceney from Fairmont Pacific Rim, Nader Chabaane from Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, Erik Lorincz from the Savoy, a Fairmont Managed Hotel, and Tom Hogan from Fairmont Singapore. The menu offers three sections: classics for those who favor tested combinations, revived classics for the more adventurous, and “neats” for those more spirits-inclined. Cocktails will be served in Schott Zweisel crystal glassware, and spirits involved in the program include Remy Martin VSOP Fine Champagne Cognac, Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label, The Botanist Islay Dry Gin, Bombay Sapphire, Casamigos Tequila, Louis XIII,

and more. The new menu is an exciting leap into a new standard of excellence. More importantly, however, it gives people at Fairmont hotels a chance to congregate, to discuss groundbreaking ideas, and to arrive at historic resolutions. As Mackie went on to say, “It is about shaping and sharing Fairmont cocktail culture with our neighbors and visiting guests in over 20 countries.”

The Knickerbocker Hotel Suites, Where New York Glamour Comes Alive Today, a visit to the Knickerbocker Hotel—the only five-star hotel on the edge of Times Square—is a jump through time, to the era of billionaire John D. Rockefeller, innovation, luxury, and, of course, glamour. That’s because the hotel has opened doors to four unique new suites—four tributes to the legends of the hotel’s past—and it invites guests to stay for drinks. The Caruso Suite overlooks Times Square from its top-floor level and replicates the spacious stage of world-famous tenor Enrico Caruso, who called the Knickerbocker home. Guests staying here can enjoy a welcome martini when they arrive, daily breakfast for two, plus a complimentary pressing of two garments. The Martini Suite is a nod to the 1912 Knickerbocker bartender Martini di Arma who, serving frequent guest John D. Rockefeller, is rumored to have invented the cocktail. It’s finished in cosmopolitan style, with leather-clad walls and lacquered minibar. And walk down to the hotel’s signature restaurant for two complimentary martinis prepared by a pro, per tradition. The Cohan Suite is named after “the man who owned Broadway,” theater celebrity and Knickerbocker resident George M. Cohan, whose personality shines through the bright and embellished décor of the room. Lastly, the Parrish Suite captures the vision of artist Maxfield Parrish, who painted a specially-commissioned mural for the Knickerbocker, and who has been honored with his own commissioned mural. As Jeff David, managing director at the Knickerbocker rightly said, “The fusion of Manhattan’s glamorous past and future is what the new Knickerbocker is all about.” The sophisticated new suites, designed by renowned firm Gabellini Sheppard, certainly
exemplify that.

TERROR, COMEDY, TRAGE
Misery, Dames at Sea, A
FEATURE
family
By Barry Bassis
Misery Stephen King’s novel Misery was adapted into a movie by William Goldman, who has now created a stage version (at the Broadhurst Theatre). The plot concerns a popular writer named Paul Sheldon, who is held captive by his self-proclaimed “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes. After a car accident, his legs are broken and he finds himself bed-ridden in Wilkes’s remote house. Audiences are drawn in by Bruce Willis, but it’s Laurie Metcalf as his deranged admirer who delivers the goods. (The same thing happened in the 1990 movie, for which Kathy Bates won the Oscar.) Leon Addison Brown is likeable as the local sheriff. Misery (directed by Will Frears) has some funny lines and quite a bit of violence. The best element may be David Korins’s revolving set.
Dames at Sea Dames at Sea is the little musical that could. It opened off-off-Broadway in 1966 and introduced theatergoers to the teenaged Bernadette Peters. The show has been presented around the world—an entertaining British cast recording from 1969 has recently been issued by Sony’s Masterworks Broadway. The musical has finally made it to Broadway, and while it’s a modest production, the cast is loaded with talent. The idea of Dames at Sea is to parody a 1930’s musical, like 42nd Street. So here the young lady gets off the bus and within minutes is cast in a show and meets her beau. By the time of the opening, which takes place on a ship, she has been promoted to star. The songs by Jim Wise (music) and George Haimsohn and Robin Miller (lyrics) are also a pastiche of pop music of the era. The cast sings well, but the dancing, choreographed by Randy Skinner, is spectacular. As the ingénue, Eloise Kropp is a charmer. The rest of the cast is also tops: Cary Tedder as her boyfriend, Danny Gardner as his fellow sailor, Lesli Margherita as the resident diva, Mara Davi as an experienced chorus girl, and John Bolton in two very different roles. Kudos to orchestrator Jonathan Tunick and set designer Anna Louizos.

WHAT’S HOT
EDY, AND JUST PLAIN FUN
REAL ESTATE
Allegiance (at Longacre Theatre) is the ambitious musical that deals with one of our nation’s gravest human rights violations: The internment of 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. George Takei (Hikaru Sulu in the Star Trek series) plays a double role—as an elderly retired U.S. soldier and, in a flashback, as his grandfather. Adding to the impact is the fact that Takei and his family were among those imprisoned in the camps. Lea Salonga cancelled at the performance I attended, but her understudy Elena Wang was terrific, with a lovely singing voice. The show presents the schism between those Japanese Americans who insisted on joining the army and those who protested. (Telly Leung and Michael K. Lee are excellent as the two protagonists.) Jay Kuo’s songs are sometimes stirring and occasionally witty. The book by Kuo, Marc Acito, and Lorenzo Thione and the direction by Stafford Arima are somewhat uneven, but this is a show that moves and enlightens audiences.

David Lindsay-Abaire’s Ripcord at Manhattan Theater Club is a return to the surrealistic comedies he wrote at the beginning of his career, before he won a Pulitzer Prize for the drama Rabbit Hole. Two women sharing a room in a nursing home become mortal enemies and play both funny and cruel tricks on one another. Directed by David Hyde Pierce with Marylouise Burke and Holland Taylor as the roommates, Ripcord has its ups and downs. As nursing home shows go, stick with The Gin Game.

hen I first started talking to Melissa Errico about her career, her life, and the work she’s been doing lately, she shared a story with me about a show she did at 54 Below in April 2014. The singer/ actress—best known for Broadway ballads and soulful songs that demonstrate her spectacular vocals—came out onstage in sequined shorts and stilettos, opening the show with Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman.” It was a playful departure from the performer that most of her fans have come to know and love, but it was clear to me, not long into the interview, that Errico is, indeed, every woman. Married to tennis legend Patrick McEnroe, who she first met at the age of five, with twin seven-year-old daughters and a nine-year-old daughter (“I went from no kids to three kids in two years,” she points out), Errico somehow manages to juggle being a wife, mother of three, singer, actress, recording artist, and community leader flawlessly. It’s tempting to resent these superpowers, but she’s also incredibly sweet and funny. Throughout her career, Errico has been the recipient of rave reviews and accolades from all over the show-biz spectrum. The NY Times seems to be madly in love with her: On a spring 2012 performance at 54 Below, they called her rendition of “Moonfall” “vocally spectacular.” Another Times review, this one on Candida, noted her “formidable beauty,” along with her “naturally Victorian gorgeousness.” She’s been described, repeatedly, as having a “voice of enchantment.” On her latest CD release, “What About Today,” which was recorded live at 54 Below and was subsequently released as the first ever DVD from 54 Below, Alec Baldwin said “her voice will melt you” and entertainment writer Brian Scott Lipton called her “an artiste extraordinaire.” She’s a bit of every female performer and every New York City mother all in one, with enough humility and humor to make her approachable and so very likeable. Case in point: the aforementioned CD opens with banter from Errico telling the audience that “the Easter Bunny forgot to come on Sunday, and the Tooth Fairy has been delayed a few times. There’s so many kids and so many teeth.” Then she launches into a flawless performance of “What About Today,” and just like that, she’s perfect again.
Broadway Beginnings Errico’s career began a bit fatefully, when, at the age of 18, she was auditioning for a role in the off-Broadway show George M! The director of The First National Company’s Les Miserables spotted her practicing her tap dancing in the hallway and noticed her talent

immediately, along with what Errico describes as a “big mane of curls.” He asked her to audition for the role of Cosette and she was cast on the spot. She dropped out of Yale to tour for over a year with the production, then returned to Yale and graduated in three years. Errico was then accepted into the Yale Graduate School of Drama, but she dropped out to make her Broadway debut—playing Princess Kitty Scherbatssky in Anna Karenina—and then went on to play Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady on Broadway. Since then, it’s been a string of Broadway shows and leading roles, as well as numerous nominations and awards, including six Drama Desk nominations, the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical, and a Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for her role in Amour. When asked about her many classic musical theater roles, Errico says “I’m thrilled to have done the classic musicals. That’s how I started, with a real identification with the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, and shows like Carousel, Oklahoma, The Sound of Music.” It was Rodgers and Hart, though, that really got her music heart aflutter and “put [her] over the edge.” On her twelfth birthday, she went to see On Your Toes, and “loved it so sincerely,” that she was inspired to pursue her musical theater dreams at any cost. This moment—coupled with an upbringing in which her doctor father played the piano at home and brought her up listening to Bill Evans, Rosemary Clooney, Sarah Vaughan, and Bing Crosby, among others—created a love of jazz and the American songbook that wove itself into her Broadway experience and led to her next role: performing artist extraordinaire.
On to the Blues Shortly after playing the role of Tracy Lord on Broadway in High Society—a role, given her musical background and passions, she was born to play—Errico was signed to Blue Note Records and released her debut album, “Blue Like That,” which was produced by Arif Marin, the legendary producer who won 11 Grammy’s and worked with everyone from Aretha Franklin to Bette Midler, Roberta Flack, and Norah Jones. From there, the albums and collaborations flowed; she released “Legrand Affair: The Songs of Michel Legrand,” with multipleAcademy-Award-winner Legrand, produced by Phil Ramone. Legrand also wrote the music for Amour—his only Broadway show—which starred Errico and was the role for which she received the Tony nomination. In fact, Errico seems to have collaborated
with every New York artist who falls under the genius category. She starred in Table, a musical written by New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik and Academy Award-winner David Shire (Gopnik, Errico points out, has dinner every week with Woody Allen), and then went on to again work closely with Gopnik because she “couldn’t help but be so taken with him.” Together, they wrote Errico’s one-woman autobiographical cabaret show, Sing the Silence, about the role of silence in women’s lives, and about “women being heard.” They debuted the show at Joe’s Pub in November 2015. Now, the two are writing a screenplay together. “Through him,” Errico says, “I’ve found a mentor in another avenue—writing is my secret passion.” Is there nothing this woman can’t do?
A New Yorker with Billions The stage hasn’t been the only place Errico has felt right at home. She’s appeared on screen dozens of times in a wide range of roles—from playing Norm Macdonald’s girlfriend in the comedian’s 2001 sitcom to notable roles in TV’s Blue Bloods, The Good Wife, and The Knick. Now, audiences are eagerly awaiting her next silver screen project, the role of June in Showtime’s Billions, starring Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis. The show premieres January 17, and is the provocative story of New York’s financial world. “I was so honored to be a part of it,” Errico says, describing her role: “My character’s husband was the head of a bank with Damian Lewis’ character, who was a shady guy. My husband was about to get him fired…” when the 9/11 attacks occurred and things got complicated. “I am the wife who knows what a schmuck he [Lewis’ character] is, the widow with a secret.” Errico laughs, “Widows are my thing lately. Steven Soderbergh gave me my role as the widow of the Chief of Surgery in The Knick, another moody widow with a secret. Widows in drama are interesting. They have history, they’re now sexually free, and they have information—which is power.” When I ask her about her involvement in the shows, and approaching them as a New Yorker, she says, “Both shows are the ultimate New York shows. The Knick is the history of Manhattan—the tension, the competition, the collaboration. And in Billions, you’re looking at one of the most difficult milestones in New York history—the tragedy of 9/11. Who survived, and how do you survive?” Then she points out: “Manhattan always brings up the question of survival. Whether it’s Woody Allen’s humorous take on survival—how do you survive your own plans, your ordeals, your
neuroses—or other ways of looking at the question.” As a tried-and-true, consummate New Yorker who is passionate about the city, Errico says, “Manhattan can be terrifying and overwhelming, but you find ways to enjoy your life here and enjoy its strengths. You have a lot of simple and beautiful places and moments here, tender moments, and ‘only in New York’ moments. You can find little miracles, little synchronicities in Manhattan all the time. New York makes so much possible, so many small miracles every day.”
And perhaps it’s in finding those miracles, big and small, that makes Errico able to perfectly juggle being every woman. It’s also through looking at the future with excitement and optimism. She names dream characters and roles she’d like to play in the future—Mama Rose in Gyspy, Desiree in A Little Night Music—and says, “The wonderful thing about this career is you can keep dreaming; some dreams will come together, some won’t, but you keep going, take chances, stretch outside your comfort zone, and always try something new, and that’s exciting.”

Melissa’s
Downtown: The Greatest Hits The Neighborhood
Just mention the Bowery, and Melissa gets excited: “It’s just such a vital and exciting area,” she says. “It’s got so much going on, so many wonderful hotels, restaurants, and shops.” And she should know, having lived in the neighborhood for almost two decades. “There are changes in the Bowery, which is complicated,” she notes, “but that’s not only in this area, that’s New York in general. But I still think this neighborhood is more unique than anywhere else.”
Restaurants
Melissa clearly has some favorites. She mentions Lafayette (380 Lafayette Street) several times, saying that “My kids and I were eating there recently, and we didn’t even know food could taste like that.” She goes on to say she loves everything Lafayette chef Andrew Carmellini is doing, and points out that he’s now the chef at The Public Theater (a regular venue for Errico’s performances, and the location for our photo shoot). She also names Il Buco Alimentari (53 Great Jones Street) as a favorite—and the spot where she threw the party after a recent Public Theater show—and says that The Smile, a cozy neighborhood café (26 Bond Street), is the perfect place to go with girlfriends. “It’s all fresh, healthy, and delicious,” she says, “and is a great place to meet up and share secrets. It feels like a cuddle.”
Local Gems
“There are so many great hotels in the neighborhood,” she states, including the Bowery Hotel and the Crosby Street Hotel on her list. The Crosby Street Hotel, according to Errico, “is so stylish, is a great place to bring friends from out of town, and has, in my opinion, the best High Tea downtown.” The Blue Note, she says, is another neighborhood must. “You have to have a date night at the Blue Note and catch Chris Botti. He has an annual residence there and it’s so special.” And of course, the Public Theater/Joe’s Pub is a favorite, but that pretty much goes without saying.
Shopping
Two words: Jill Platner (113 Crosby Street). When asked to expand, she describes Jill Platner’s handmade jewelry as “wearable sculptures” and goes on to say that her anniversary is at the end of December and that every year, right beforehand, it’s an ’I hope you go to Jill Platner’ moment.”
Culture & History
“We love St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral on Mott Street,” Errico says. “It was recently renovated, and it’s just such an unbelievable piece of history. It’s such a New York gem.”
Broadway, Billions, and the Bowery Melissa Errico, husband Patrick McEnroe, and their three daughters (who they call fairies) are as downtown New York City as it gets. They moved into a converted chocolate factory in NoLita (before it was called NoLita) in the early days of their marriage, and would run into David Bowie in the elevator. Iman, also a neighbor, would give Errico advice. They recently moved into another apartment in the neighborhood, along with their beloved Yorkie, Pepper. The Errico/McEnroe clan is all about being a part of the neighborhood, interwoven with the community, not as celebrities, but as friends and neighbors. In fact, Errico started Bowery Babes, a non-profit dedicated to providing resources and support for women throughout the stages of motherhood. It recently celebrated its tenth anniversary, and is a thriving program involving thousands of women. However, it all began humbly and sweetly, when Errico was pregnant with her first child. While taking a prenatal yoga class at Lital Yoga (302 Bowery Street), she discovered that 12 women in the class were all due with their first child on the same week. They came from every culture, religion, profession, and background, but all shared this one significant trait. In true Errico nature—a collaborator, connector, and friend—she invited them to lunch, which turned into an email list, a yahoo group, a 75-member group within a month, and a full-blown non-profit in 2009. “I started Bowery Babes,“ Errico says, “not because I wanted to take over the neighborhood, but because I was fascinated by this diverse group of women and how we’d met, and I wanted to connect everyone. I think people are always looking for an excuse to connect and make new friends. In NY, we’re all so private, yet so many of us have so much in common.” Bowery Babes not only connects downtown mothers of all backgrounds with each other, but provides resources, information, and opportunities to any women in the community who want to be involved. Errico is passionate about it—after all, her role as a mother is clearly her most important one—and it’s evident that countless Bowery moms have benefited from this passion.

in that way, and we feed off of each other, and have grown together. PJ: With such busy careers, do you have a system for handling it all so well while being parents of three? Is there a secret? PM: I call Melissa the master organizer. She is the brains behind the operation, and is an unbelievable organizer and emailer. Back when I was working for the USTA, I didn’t have as much time; now I am in a transitional time, so I am around a lot more. I’m enjoying my life right now because I can take my older daughter to tennis and be even more involved with them. It is not always easy. In January I leave to go Australia for 17 days, but over the years we have learned how to adjust and balance and work together. PJ: And I can tell you’re both very involved as parents. PM: Yes, we are always involved with our girls. Sometimes it’s hard for us to go out and get dinner for an hour, just the two of us, but they’re in school now and can do more things for themselves. So now is a good time for Melissa to be able to focus on her career. PJ: Are you very conscious of not putting pressure on your kids and letting them find their own way?
Melissa’s Other Half: Tennis Legend
Patrick McEnroe
Melissa Errico and Patrick McEnroe are each two halves of one very successful, very impressive couple. Raised in Manhasset with older brother John, McEnroe began playing tennis at a young age, and went on to win the French Junior doubles, help his Stanford University team win the NCAA team championship twice, and subsequently join the professional tour. He won the ’89 French Open Men’s Doubles, in 2000 was named the 38th Captain of the U.S. Davis Cup Team, and in 2004 served as captain of the U.S. men’s tennis team at the Summer Olympics. Along the way, he married Melissa Errico (in 1998) and became a father of three. And if that’s not enough, he hosted a radio show (“The Patrick McEnroe Show”), published a book in 2010 (Hardcourt Confidential: Tales from Twenty Years in the Pro Tennis Trenches, Hachette Books), and continues to serve as a tennis commentator for ESPN. McEnroe was on hand while we interviewed and photographed Melissa; naturally, we
seized the opportunity to chat with him. Pamela Jacobs: You’ve done a lot of TV for years; have you and Melissa ever thought about working on something together? And do you give each other advice on performing? Patrick McEnroe: Well I can’t sing or dance, but I have told Melissa that we should do our own TV show—so the short answer is ‘yes.’ We do different things but there are, of course, some similarities. That is part of the strength of our relationship. I know the ups and downs of being a player and losing and having to deal with that; she knows the ups and downs of her world. There are similarities in preparation and focus, the dedication it takes to walk out on the stage every night, or what I did as a player and an announcer. When we first met [again], I was at the tail end of my playing career and was going through a transition, and Melissa was really helpful in getting the next stage of my career going. And when she did High Society on Broadway, I was there 47 nights in a row supporting her. We’ve always supported each other and worked together
PM: Absolutely. Especially when it comes to tennis. I am very sensitive with Victoria, who is really into tennis. I will support her as much as I can, but I am sensitive to that side of it. When I was about ten years old, my dad got upset with me one day when I was acting up on the court. He said, ‘I don’t care if you win or lose—I care what your attitude is. If you quit tennis tomorrow, it makes no difference. I am your dad and I love you.’ I remember that and I take that to heart all the time. PJ: Melissa is so connected to the neighborhood through Bowery Babes; do you have a real sense of connection to the neighborhood and community as well? PM: Does playing Santa every year at the Bowery Babes party and being a chicken at the Halloween party count? It’s been a real pleasure to see it evolve over the years. Melissa has spearheaded the whole thing and I’ve been along for the ride, and it’s amazing to see the effect Melissa has had on so many people. Of course we love where we live, but even more than that is the effect the organization has had on people. I can’t tell you how many times I was at a Bowery Babes party and other fathers pulled me aside and said ‘you have no idea how this has positively impacted my wife.’ Bowery Babes is a real community; it evolved because of Melissa’s passion for it—to see that it’s still going and the impact it’s had on the neighborhood is great.

The reasons for falling in love with St Andrews are many. One of the biggest ones, for me, was my home-away-from-home there: the Fairmont St Andrews. From the roaring fireplace that
The approach to Fairmont St Andrews is dramatic—just past the quaint old town along a quiet road flanked by green fields, the hotel suddenly appears, a formidable but inviting castle surrounded by two golf courses and the dark and mysterious North Sea. Despite the fact that the hotel was built in 2001, and is currently undergoing a massive interior (though not at all intrusive) refurbishment, you can easily feel as if you’ve stepped back into medieval Scotland, and that you are a member of royalty. 520 acres belong to this regal property, with views of nearby cliffs and medieval rooftops in the distance and the smell of sea air ever present. While the rooms and suites currently provide all the comfort and elegance expected of a five-star hotel, once the refurbishment is complete in the spring of 2017, the suites and bathrooms will reach a new level of luxury, with added design details and floor-to-ceiling marble in the bathrooms.

If you’re looking for signs of these two claims to fame in St Andrews, you’ll find them abundant. And if you picture Scotland, in general, as a place of rolling, sheep-filled hills, you’re right. But there’s so much more to this mystical area than just those things. Whether you’re a golf pro or have never touched a club, are an avid royal-family-follower or couldn’t care less, you’ll find that St Andrews is truly one of the prettiest, most enchanting places in all the world. You’ll also find, as I did, that the people are some of the friendliest and most endearing anywhere, and that the food (yes, the food!) is outstanding. Of course, you’ll also find a good deal of exceptional whisky. This is Scotland, after all.

S
t Andrews, Scotland is best known for two things. Most notably, it’s recognized as the home of golf—the aptly named Old Course at St Andrews was the first place where golf was played, and it dates back to the early 1400s. More recently, many know of St Andrews— particularly its 600-year-old University—as the place where Will and Kate studied, met, and fell in love.

WHAT’S HOT family
In short, if you make the trip to St Andrews just for the food at the Fairmont, it’s well worth it. But there is, of course, plenty more to enjoy. Family movie nights in the theater, whisky tastings at Kittocks Den (or try the Kilted Kittock beer, brewed especially for the hotel), and a full-service luxury spa are just some of the highlights.

Adjacent to the Atrium is the colorful Squire restaurant, named after golf legend Gene “the Squire” Sarazen, where a delectable buffet awaits every morning—and provides the opportunity to try traditional Scottish haggis. Kittocks Den—where I spent many an afternoon enjoying a whisky and some girl talk—is warm and inviting, and also offers traditional afternoon tea, comfort foods like roast tomato soup and fish and chips, and of course an extensive collection of rare and unique Single Malts.
This is exemplified at St Andrews Bar & Grill, set in an almost magical location on a cliff, with both golf courses surrounding it and panoramic views of the water front and center. Recently refurbished and having just unveiled a new menu, dining here is an experience. Shy, baby-faced, and incredibly talented, 26-year-old chef James Hill delivers dishes that rival those at any of the world’s finest restaurants. And then, of course, there’s the golf. Certainly this is the main purpose for many travelers to St Andrews (the world’s best golf and the world’s best whisky do make one heck of a bucket list trip), and the two courses at Fairmont St Andrews—The Torrance and The Kittocks—more than deliver. Thanks in large part to these courses, the hotel has been included on numerous “Best Golf Resorts” lists, and has won multiple awards. The courses are a golf-lover’s dream, but if you’re not a player, it’s worthwhile to book a lesson for the views alone. Beyond those views, though, it’s more than worth it to take a golf clinic or a lesson with Director of Golf Amy Yeates, St Andrews’ only female PGA pro. As a non-golfer, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the clinic with Amy— which ended with a fruit smash (replacing the balls with fruit) and quite a few laughs. And for the rest of my life I’ll be able to say I played golf in St Andrews. St Andrews itself has much to offer as well, and not only should you spend time exploring it, but the Fairmont team will help arrange any activities and excursions for you. You can board their free shuttle to historic old town and visit the Old Course, the Museum of Golf, the picturesque University, the ruins of St

At the family-friendly La Cucina, I enjoyed an excellent Italian meal, including a dish with seafood straight from the neighboring sea. In fact, great emphasis is placed on fresh, local, seasonal foods throughout the hotel, with much coming from the onsite greenhouse.

The distillery was the lifelong dream of former golf caddie Douglas Clement, who teamed up with the Wemyss family, one of the oldest families in Scotland, to make this dream come true. In this barley-rich seaside land, they converted an historic barn and turned it into beautiful distillery in which visitors can learn, tour, and taste. Parts of it are like a veritable Willy Wonka factory for adults, and while there’s no whisky river in which to swim, there’s plenty to drink and purchase. I left the tour and tasting with a newfound appreciation for this spirit— and feeling no pain.

At Home in Old Town Edinburgh f you’re visiting St Andrews, you’ll most likely be flying into Edinburgh—and if you’re flying into Edinburgh, you should absolutely spend at least one night there. Steeped in history and culture, Edinburgh has been the capital of Scotland since the early 15th century, and it’s a hotbed of entertainment, nightlife, education, and arts, as well as the home of Scotland’s Parliament and monarchy. There’s so much to see and do in this vibrant, storybook city, but if you’ve got limited time, you can stick to the Old Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), with Edinburgh Castle (the city’s most popular attraction) holding court high on the Royal Mile, towering over the city and bewitching visitors with its imposing, medieval beauty. Stroll down the Royal Mile and make your way toward Holyrood Palace, stopping along the way at the church of St Giles, the many souvenir shops and vendors, and the Real Mary King’s Close, the underground home to the city’s deepest secrets. You can book a daytime walking tour of the city, a nighttime ghost tour, or simply meander and discover the mysteries and treasures of one of the brightest jewels in the UK crown. The best area to stay in order to be close to these sites is on the Royal Mile, and you won’t find a better location that of Old Town Chambers. Within a charming courtyard just off the Royal Mile—and a two-minute walk to Edinburgh Castle—these five-star serviced apartments are each completely distinct, and are truly some of the most unique and welcoming accommodations I’ve ever experienced. The buildings that make up Old Town Chambers straddle three medieval closes (lanes) and include a collection of one-, two-, and

three-bedroom apartments, three penthouses, and a 15th century townhouse. Many of the apartments have exposed stone dating back to the 15th century, and all blend modern design seamlessly with the historic surroundings, featuring character details such as gabled ceilings and old sash and case windows. While each apartment at Old Town Chambers is one-of-a-kind, they all include modern amenities and conveniences, from drench showers and smart TVs to fully-stocked, top-of-the-line kitchens, Bose sound systems, and Nespresso coffee makers. They also all come with the full service you find in a five-star hotel, but with all of the space and convenience of apartment living. In addition to the ancient exposed brickwork within many of the rooms, you’ll find delightful design details and furnishings, original period wall paintings, and countless little touches that make it feel like home. It’s no surprise that Old Town Chambers is consistently ranked as one of the top places to stay in Edinburgh and continues to receive rave reviews. Staying here not only places you in the very heart of this beautiful city, but it makes you feel as if you are a part of it. My only regret during my stay was that it was so short—I look forward to returning to this magical city and once again calling Old Town Chambers home.

A mother-daughter dream trip around Italy brings food, fashion, and family bonding.
••
By Hannah Seligson
W
hen I first thought of traveling with my mom (Judy Seligson), the genre of a mother daughter trip seemed rather limited and uninspired. Fortunately, neither my mom nor I are spa aficionados, nor can we imagine going on a cruise. We both eat glutenfilled food whenever possible, we love cities, and bodies of clear salt water. I wanted a trip where we could have wonderful experiences—the stuff, they say, that is a better use of funds than stuff. We wanted to see cities, ideally of some antiquity with the right dose of fun, good food, and a few days of rest and relaxation on a beach. Italy, a bastion of beauty, ample carbohydrates, and culture is a foolproof destination.
The Four Season Florence, Courtesy of Four Seasons
On top of that, I knew that my mom, a professional and accomplished artist, had been planning her first trip to Florence and Rome for many years. So we’d start in Florence, the birthplace of many of the great Renaissance painters who had inspired my mom’s own work. Then we’d continue to Porto Ercole, on the coast of Tuscany, for some sea air, and finish with two days in Roma.
We wanted to splurge on a great hotel, and discover restaurants with good food and reasonable prices. We enjoyed a memorable meal on our first day in Florence at Il Sadona Allegro, a small café on via Luigi Carlo Farini. A two-course lunch including beverage, with perfectly seasoned al dente rigatoni, put us back 10 euros (each).
But first, the lodging. We essentially planned our entire trip around the availability of a room at the Four Seasons Hotel in Florence. Both of us were captivated by a picture on their website of an enormous outdoor emerald green pool that was even more enchanting in person.
Our pace in Florence was breakneck. We climbed the 417 stairs of the Duomo, an experience during which my mom asked, “We paid money for this?” The view from the top, however, is worth the exertion and the 10 euros. My mom told me about Giotto’s role in the beginning of Renaissance perspective drawing as we gazed at his frescoes at the Franciscan church of Santa Croce.
The hotel is in the middle of Florence, a few steps from the Duomo, yet sits on the largest private gardens in Florence. It provided a sanctuary from the crush of tourists that descend in droves upon Florence. It is worth the trip to a city that has no direct flights from the U.S. (I advise flying La Compagnie, the new all-business class airline to Paris; then it’s a two-hour hop to Florence.) We stayed in the part of the hotel called the Conventino, a sculpture-filled four-minute walk to the main part of the property. The former nunnery had the intimate attention of a boutique hotel.
Food was crucial to our time together (my mom and I both relish eating and at regular intervals). The cacio e pepe—a minimalist pasta of cheese and pepper—at the Four Seasons set the standard for pasta for the rest of the trip. Il Borro, an elegant lunch spot on the Ponte Vecchio, serves somewhat lighter fare such as pea soup, smoked salmon salad, and risotto with burrata. Ristorante Borgo San Jacopo has a wonderful view over the Arno River and puts a modern twist on Italian classics with inventive dishes such as five ziti pasta with asparagus and vegetables from the Tuscan garden with black truffle. At the Ferragamo museum, which is worth a visit if only to see the walls of shoes, I stumbled upon a quote that said, “A visit to Florence is not only good for the spirit but a chance to improve one’s aesthetic appearance.” So we took that to heart and visited the Sonya Boutique, owned by Florentine Caterina Buono. She sells a very well-curated selection of D. Exterior (a brand with limited availability in the U.S. or online), Missoni, and Roberto Cavalli. Continuing in the spirit of improving our aesthetic appearance, we went to the famous outlets—known as “The Mall”— so you don’t have to. We put our retail armor on to contend with the crowds. It is worth the trip if you can hit the jackpot—which we did. I found a pair of shoes at Bottega Veneta in my mom’s size that had been reduced to 90 euros.

After three strenuous days of seeing, eating, shopping, and walking (by our count, we clocked over ten miles a day) in Florence we traveled two and a half hours southeast to Il Pellicano, a hotel in Tuscany overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. A chic woman from Milan told me, while we bobbed together in the water, that this is “the best sea in Tuscany.” Our plan, aided by the fact that we didn’t have a car, was not to go anywhere for three days. We passed the time swimming in the clear, silky water (one of Il Pellicano’s best features is that it has direct beach access), taking steams in the Turkish Judy & Hannah Seligson bath, swimming in their heavenly pool filled from the sea below, perusing their boutique, and then after dinner catching up on mediocre American television. My mom observed that the 50-room hotel felt like a camp, albeit one with movie-star gorgeous vistas over the water and a somewhat overpriced Michelin star restaurant. Refreshed, we were ready to head to Rome, the last leg of our journey. We arrived in the late afternoon on Sunday, and headed straight for the Colosseum. We had to be strategic about how to use our 36-hours. Our hotel, the St. Regis, was centrally located on the Via Vittorio (and had some

of the most gracious, read: largest rooms I’ve ever seen in Europe). With our time constraints, we couldn’t see everything, but we saw a lot. My mom wanted to see in particular Michaelangelo’s sculpture of Moses, in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli. Our highlight reel also included the Roman Forum, the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican, the Spanish Steps, and the Villa Borghese gardens. We dined al fresco in the magical and delicious Secret Garden, Le Jardin de Russie, at the famous Hotel de Russie. You don’t know how good Spaghetti Pomodoro can be until you’ve tried it here. Before we left on our Italian odyssey, I had asked, half joking, “Can two adults, particularly those who are as closely related as a mother and daughter, travel harmoniously together?” The answer, I’m happy to report, is yes. The proof? We even tried, without success, to extend our time in Rome. What made the trip such a success? Yes, it was wellplanned and we stayed in beautiful places. Still, anyone who has ever navigated a foreign city—not to mention one where neither one speaks much Italian beyond “grazie”—with another human being knows that travel can be a test of endurance and patience. What made it work, we both agreed, is that my mom and I both accommodated to each other at different parts of the trip, not so much out of a sense of duty but because we wanted to. This is the great part of traveling with a parent as an adult: I didn’t have to rebel or prove my autonomy. (At 33, I’m just about over that phase.) We could relate to each other as people. I learned about art and saw my mom in a new light: She’s a road warrior with incredible stamina. My mom also got to see me in professional action. She became my indispensable right-hand woman as I reported two separate stories during our eight days in Italy. Also, as my mom keenly and humorously observed, “Neither of us makes the other person get up at 7 a.m. to go look at ruins or Renaissance art.”

he new year means snow on the ground and a list of resolutions. There’s an easy solution to escape the cold and cross off a few items—jet to Scottsdale, Arizona where sunny skies, hiking trails, luxurious spas, and fine dining await. With lush greenery on premises, towering cacti at every corner, and dazzling sunsets that seem to go on forever, I was truly in paradise. A panoramic view of endless mountain ranges, from Four Peaks to the Superstitions, greeted me as I stepped into the spacious balcony suite. The living and sleeping areas were chic and recently renovated with tile flooring, a wood-burning fireplace, state-ofthe-art technology and comforts, including a soaking tub in the bathroom with stunning views. The décor is naturally Southwest with small cactus plants scattered through the suite, desert-inspired sculptures and photography on the walls, and colorful
animal-printed accent rugs. Black and white photographs of Camelback beckoned me to hit the trail to experience the vivid desert beauty. With the help of a resortprovided guide, I set out on a bike to the Echo Canyon trailhead towards Praying Monk—an iconic 100-odd foot tall red sandstone formation shaped like a kneeling monk. Ditching the bikes, we ventured on the mile hike to the summit. The incredible views of the valley made it clear why Camelback is one of the most hiked mountains in the country. However, with its sheer cliffs and rough terrain, the summit trails are not for novices. But worry not, there are easier trails at the base. After a relaxing dip in the infinity-edge pool at the resort, I was ready for a night on the town. (continued...)

Overlooking Paradise Valley, the restaurant is ideal for watching the sunset. Private dining room XII, featuring an 800-bottle wine corridor, a sommelier station, and a sliding glass door view of the kitchen gave me a glimpse into this world-class restaurant; the food on my table, specifically the kung pao cauliflower and the mouthwatering Maine lobster udon noodles, were some of the best dishes I’ve ever had. I headed to the Asian-inspired Sanctuary Spa, which offers indulging treatments such as the Sanctuary Luxury Facial, Sumatra Coconut Body Ritual, and In Harmony Massage. With 12 treatment rooms that open up to a lush courtyard, a Watsu pool for hydro treatments, and a serene meditation courtyard overlooking Praying Monk, I felt like I was in an oasis. Next year, I resolve to return to the Sanctuary with friends to experience the new Spa House for a true meditation retreat.

A good meal and live music go hand in hand, so make sure to grab a seat on Rum Row’s pool deck Wednesday to Sunday where acoustic guitar soloists and bands perform for your listening pleasure. Then again, private poolside cabanas, with their option of VIP bottle service, can make for a decadent evening.
HOME
The Gates, as the name implies, welcomes its visitors at the entry way to Florida’s southernmost island. Upon first glance, the hotel looks like a boutique with its neutral tones, crisp geometry, and minimalist style. The guest rooms—ranging from the Standard to the Lifestyle to the Scene—reinforce this ambiance with their creamy white walls, airy spaces, and nautical motifs. Custom platform pine beds and Bali-imported wood tables add an organic touch, while regional lore is present in photography by local Jorge de la Torriente and a selection of Key West-inspired books.
LAST WORD
While at Rum Row, make a stop at the Blind Pig— the Gate’s signature food truck that offers delicious tapas-style “conch fusion”: fusion of Bahamian, Caribbean, Cuban, and Floridian flavors. You’ll find a constantly-rotating menu with items like the Flapper in a Wrapper (grilled chicken wrap on a whole wheat tortilla with wild berry mint vinaigrette, arugula, crushed apples, and herb feta), Right in the Kisser (half pound angus burger on brioche roll with optional toppings), ceviche, fish tacos, and flatbread “a la Plancha.”

WHAT’S HOT
A
t the time of Prohibition, Key West must have looked something like a tropical West Egg. With beer and rum smuggled from Cuba and whiskey, rye, and scotch from the British Isles through Nassau, the island was a free-for-all where violence lived with opulence, rules were bent, money was made, and the smell of cigars lingered in the air. Key West was far from the picturesque island we see today—a synonym for tranquility and lazy afternoons on the beach. But in many ways, the memory of times gone by remains on the island, whispering its mysteries to those who care to listen, to those staying at the Gates Hotel Key West.
And lastly, a stay at the Gates Hotel is not complete without a visit to the Cigar Garden where guests can purchase and enjoy cigars from Rodriguez Cigar Factory, the oldest operating cigar manufacturer in Key West. The cigars are handrolled and contain cured, aged vintage tobacco leaves in the traditional Cuban style. They remind us of yet another way history—the first cigar was made in Key West in 1831—continues to live in the present. Before you leave the island, we recommend a water sport activity—whether it’s snorkeling, deepsea fishing, or catamaran sailing—organized through the Gates’ concierge services or a visit to Key West’s top destinations outside the hotel— Duval Street, the Southernmost Point Buoy, or the Ernest Hemingway Home. And while you’re looking out over the sea, at the place where countless others have stood before you, perhaps you too will get the sensation of being “borne ceaselessly into the past.”

Last year was all about the Magic Kingdom: the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and the unveiling of the new Fantasyland. Well, 2016 and 2017 are all about the magic happening at Hollywood Studios. If your kids are anything like my boys (ages 4 and 6), it’s all about a galaxy far, far away. Disney, in partnership with Star Wars, is planning their largest single-theme land expansion ever. Piggy-backing on the hype of the movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this new area in Hollywood Studios will be introducing a new planet—some characters and places will be familiar, some all new. Two big adventures in this 14-acre land expansion include getting kids (and adults) behind the controls of the Millennium Falcon for a secret flying mission, plus battling it out between the First Order and the Resistance in the never-ending fight between good and evil. And while the big news is the expansion, there are plenty of other roll-outs happening at the Jedi Training Academy, Star Wars Launch Bay and Star Wars the Adventure Continues.

Located in the Norway Pavilion, the Frozen Ever After ride replaces the Maelstrom water ride, which has had its home in Epcot for 27 years. At the new ride, kids (and adults) will board log canoes that will transport them to the famous mythical city of Arendelle, a magical land where winter meets summer thanks to Elsa’s magical powers. The ride goes through the Bay of Arendelle and on to Elsa’s Ice Palace where the famous Let It Go theme song will be playing as favorite characters from the show make an appearance. Scenes from the movie, new lyrics to favorite songs, and an interactive winter wonderland await. There will also

be a meet-and-greet location where kids can interact with Anna and Elsa in the flesh.
Disney Springs Downtown Disney has officially changed its name to Disney Springs, and the number of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues doubles from 75 in 2015 to 150 in 2016. That means you have plenty of choices including two much-anticipated debuts: Morimoto Asia and Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar. Morimoto Asia is a must: the Peking duck, sushi, and dim sum are simply delicious. Other new restaurants in Disney Springs include: Sprinkles (a cupcake bakery); STK (a steakhouse); The Edison (American cuisine with live entertainment and a great cocktail bar); and Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza (great for kids). New retail shops include: UGG, Lilly Pulitzer, Zara, and Tommy Bahama.
Where to Stay Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has unveiled their over-water bungalows and the 20 standalone bungalows will have you feeling like you’re in French Polynesia. They are all two-bed two-bath with an expansive living room, kitchen and, my favorite part, an outside deck. The deck has a plunge pool (which the kids loved) and was the perfect spot to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks every night (there’s a button that allows you pipe in the Disney music). If you want to be transported to Africa, then stay at the luxury, deluxe Animal Kingdom Lodge, where zebras, giraffes, wildebeest and other animals roam freely around the (fenced in) grounds. Having coffee on my balcony each morning, while taking in the “African savannah” made me feel like I was on safari, Disney style of course.

he Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong is the oldest establishment in a global luxury hotel group and remains the key destination for travelers to the Orient. The hotel was founded as simply the Mandarin in 1963, but became the Mandarin Oriental after a merger a decade later with the Oriental hotel in Thailand leading to the foundation of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.
Back in the day, the Mandarin Oriental was the tallest building in Hong Kong, but today it looks somewhat quaint next to the modern steel and glass structures around it. That said, not everything new is great—the hotel remains the benchmark for a luxury hotel experience in the region, if not globally.

Hong Kong’s Mandarin Oriental Oriental, Hong Kong has mastered the fine details of service, which in its terms aims to “delight our guests”. For example, a business traveler in a rush who leaves his laptop and cables strewn over a desk in his suite will come back to find each cable wrapped with a velcro tie, a screen-cleaning cloth left to use as necessary. The hotel has both a barber’s shop, offering male guests classic barber services, and a wide range of luxury products. In addition, there is the salon, which is located on the top floor of the hotel alongside the spa, where your beauty needs are attended to next to panoramic views of the harbor. Dining options include the flagship Man Wah Cantonese restaurant, which is located on the top floor of the hotel and offers an array of delicacies for both lunch and dinner. The breakfast buffet is a genuine treat, encompassing both East and West dining traditions. It sets guests up for their days in this bustling city. The Chinnery adopts the look and feel of a London gentleman’s club and offers a classic menu, while the Mandarin Cake Shop is worth visiting simply for the artistry of the chefs in their displays of confectionery. Other dining options include the Pierre, which offers French cuisine, the Mandarin Grill + Bar, which offers modern European cuisine, and the unique Krug Room, which serves progressive gastronomy. The Krug Room is hidden near the kitchen and is the only one of its kind in the world—surely the place for a visiting foodie’s ultimate reservation.

ver since opening last year, TESSA, on the Upper West Side, has elevated the neighborhood’s dining scene. Located near the Beacon Theater, TESSA is the perfect place for a pre-show dinner or a late night drink—or simply for a great meal any night of the week. The décor is rustic with an urban-industrial twist, and while the environment is certainly chic, it’s also very warm and welcoming. There are private dining/wine rooms in the back—along with a curated list of fine wines—and downstairs you can see the culinary team working in the state-of-the-art kitchen. The setup makes it ideal to enjoy a romantic evening with someone special. Owners Will Tracy, a 30-year seasoned restaurateur, and friend Larry Bellone, longtime resident of the UWS, opened TESSA’s doors to create a new and unique kind of restaurant for the community. Executive Chef Edwin Claflin is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, and has worked at such prestigious restaurants as Daniel, DB Bistro Moderne, and Bouley. His creativity is clearly demonstrated in the dishes served at TESSA, drawing inspiration from French, Spanish, and Italian cultures. The menu is designed to cater to all of TESSA’s guests with a wide array of mezze, cheese boards, shared plates, appetizers, pasta and risotto, entrees, and sides. Shared plate and appetizer options include a mezze trio of house dips: Carrot harissa, smoked eggplant, ricotta

Pastas are made fresh in house, with options ranging from lobster whole wheat spaccatelli tossed with local corn, chanterelles, shallots, and purslane to rabbit cavatelli with rabbit and pancetta ragu, smoked onions, lovage, and chives. The entrees, too, are guaranteed to make you want to come back: For example, Long Island Duck, a honey-spiced breast with smoked duck sausage, purple barley, mustard greens, and plum; and a 32-ounce Cote de Boeuf for two. Sides include house-made fries with rosemary salt, creamed spinach and kale, shaved Brussels sprouts, and other seasonal vegetables. Pastry Chef Yarsis Jacobo creates a unique dessert list, including a goat’s milk cheesecake with graham cracker crust and Concord grape jam, and TESSA’s original tiramisu—a parfait of marsala mousse, strawberries, brownie, and white coffee ice cream. The creative collaboration, beautifully crafted environment, and unique menu have made TESSA quickly become one of the Upper West Side’s favorites, as well as a Michelin recommended restaurant in the 2015 guide.

The Step-By-Step Process of Laser Hair Removal
•
••
By Amanda Hoffman
L
ast month, in order to learn more about laser hair removal—the process, the pros and cons, the honest answers— Resident spoke with Lital Lev-Ary, owner of Light Touch Laser Spa. Lital is one of the most trusted laser hair removal professionals in the city, for a number of reasons. Beyond her expertise and knowledge, she’s trusted for her complete honesty; she never overpromises or under-delivers. This month, I decided to take it a step further—I decided the best way to understand the process of laser hair removal and write about it was to experience it firsthand. So I paid Lital a visit. The session began with a full consultation; Lital stressed that this is an important part of the procedure, and that every client receives this prior to treatment. During the consultation, Lital evaluated my candidacy, my needs, and my limitations. Beyond that, what truly stuck out was the honesty and knowledge she provided. She emphasized that the procedure is about hair reduction, NOT hair removal. The body, Lital explained, will never be completely hairless, as it’s constantly producing hair—and this is affected by stress, certain medications, hormones, and other factors, in addition to the body’s normal hair growth patterns. But while laser hair removal will never fully eliminate hair growth, it will remove about 85-95%. There are also plenty of instances when Lital will not treat a person or an area, and this
is discussed during the consultation. For instance, Lital does not recommend sun exposure one month before or one month after the procedure. This is because the ideal situation is to increase the laser setting in each subsequent visit, but following sun exposure, increasing the laser will irritate and burn the skin.
and that every follicle needs about three to four sessions to be destroyed. Different areas of the body have different hair growth cycles: facial hair cycles are four to six weeks; body hair cycles are six to eight weeks; leg hair cycles are eight to ten weeks. There are also specific areas of the body which are affected by hormones.
Another instance is if the client is taking certain medications; Lital will not treat anyone on antibiotics, and requires a full month wait period following antibiotics. For other specific medications, she requires clearance from a doctor.
For me, the procedure itself was not painless, but certainly tolerable. Talking through the session and learning more about the specifics of it actually made it even easier to tolerate, and the results are well worth the minimal discomfort.
Finally, she won’t go anywhere near tattooed skin, she avoids thin, light hair, she doesn’t recommend light hair on the face (i.e. “peach fuzz”), and doesn’t believe in touch-ups.
I felt that while I lost body hair during my treatment, I gained a significant amount of knowledge. I learned that IPL is not the same as laser—IPL cannot target light hair or dark skin, and only results in a 50-60% reduction of hair—so it’s important to make sure you’re being treated with a laser machine, not an IPL.
Following the in-depth consultation, the procedure begins, once the technician has chosen the right laser for a client’s skin tone. During the entire laser process, Lital talked me through it, explaining it and making sure I was knowledgeable about what was going on. For example, she explained that rather than the laser penetrating the hair follicle (which is what many people believe), the hair absorbs the energy from the laser, and this energy travels down the follicle, thereby burning it. This is why there must be visible hair for a treatment to work—there has to be enough hair for the energy to travel down. Lital explained that each session is about weakening these follicles through this process,
Most importantly, I learned that if it sounds too good to be true, it is. If someone promises 100% permanent removal of hair, and that they can treat every part of your body, chances are they are not being forthright. That said, I’m very satisfied with the results of my session with Lital, and I definitely plan to continue seeing her. Beyond the hair removal itself, I felt comfortable with her, knowing that I could trust her on all levels— that she was being honest with me. This, to me, is priceless.

By Dr. Irene Grafman “
N
ew Year, New You”: It might seem like everyone is saying it, but every midnight of December 31st, we get this amazing excitement, and hope for the great things the new year can bring. To me, it’s such a happy feeling—to be full of hope and excitement for what this year has in store for us. With all the New Year’s resolutions, the one I think everyone shares in common is to take better care of ourselves and our health. This is the time of year I start remembering to make all my doctors’ appointments, to improve the way I look and the way I feel. Today, dentists should really be part of your medical team; there are so many ways we can improve your health and improve your life. Let us help you with these resolutions:
1) Healthy Mouth – Even though I feel
the most important thing you can do for your oral health is to get your regular cleanings, I always hear from my patients, “I’m not due yet, I was just there!” Time passes so quickly,

it’s easy to forget to keep up with all of our doctors’ appointments, but it is the most important thing you can do for yourself. My philosophy has always been rooted in prevention; if you catch things early, the problem is easier, less invasive, and often less expensive to take care of.
2) Healthy Body
– The mouth is the entryway to the rest of the body. Therefore, it is so important to keep it healthy and clean. With regular cleanings and all-natural products that can help maintain a healthy PH in your mouth, it is possible to minimize the bacteria that can cause disease.
you get that’s important—it’s the quality of sleep. Through proper diagnosis and easy treatment, a great night’s sleep can easily be achieved, and it will change your life, like it did mine. Overall, you’ll experience beauty from the inside out. After all, a healthy smile is a beautiful smile. Quality of life is improved when you’re healthy and pain free. These are some great ways a dentist can be an integral part of improving your wellbeing and helping you solve some of those little aches and pains you thought you just had to live with.
3) Live Pain Free and Comfortably Have a happy and healthy New Year! – No jaw pain, no headaches (especially migraines), no neck pain, and no back pain. By balancing your bite, we can allow all the muscles of the face and the accessory muscles of the head and neck to relax, thereby alleviating many areas where we experience pain and tension.
4) Beauty Rest – It’s not how much sleep

Resolution: Don’t Be Afraid To Shake It Up
•

By Valerie Greenberg
D
“
on’t be afraid”: The title to my single that played over the airwaves of ABC’s Radio Disney during my junior year of high school. The name of the song can be interpreted in so many different ways, but one thing stays the same—even though it was years ago; the message is to motivate, to be true to yourself and live your most authentic life. Don’t be afraid to tell someone you love them, don’t be afraid to reach for the stars and make your dreams come true, or simply don’t be afraid to attempt a challenging task that others may have made you think you can’t accomplish. Because you can, and “You’vebeenVALidated” to do so.
As an on-Air personality and entertainment journalist based out of New York City I’ve spoken to many successful celebrities who have opened up and conveyed some of their most vulnerable, burst-your-bubble moments in life you’d never imagine they’d experience. ABC’s Blackish star and Emmy-nominated Anthony Anderson was booed off stage at his very first live comedy show, and couldn’t have been more ecstatic to perform, but when the time came, the tech crew shut the lights out and turned off his mic; now he’s most definitely proven he’s got the goods. What I’m saying is don’t let things get you down. You deserve to create the best possible life for yourself. As my mom tells me, be your own best friend, because if you don’t believe in yourself, who else will? I was lucky enough to grow up a South Florida resident. That’s the location I knew—palm trees and the ocean were what I was accustomed to—but no matter what stage of your life you’re in, one thing is certain: It’s never too late to start a new chapter, and the last thing any of us wants during our time on earth is to have regrets. You have to take risks in order to achieve what’s really worth it and to overcome obstacles. You owe it to yourself to get those endorphins going. Create a six cylinder vehicle to transport you to a place of fulfillment. Surround yourself with those who truly want to see you succeed. Whether it be in terms of your personal or professional life, get out of your comfort zone and incorporate something fresh into your lifestyle. My don’t-be-afraid moment was making the move to New York City and breaking into the super-saturated, competitive industry of entertainment media and television. So think about it: What’s yours? Taylor swift may say “shake it off,” but I say” shake it up!” It’s never too late.

The Holiday Dilemma:
The Façade, Authenticity, and Gifts of Self
•
••
By David Ortmann, LCSW
T
here are many things about the holidays that I don’t like, but talking about them is not the point of this article. What I do appreciate most about this season is that, at its essence, it’s a season of love. What are the most important gifts you can give to yourself, your partner, partners, your family, and close friends at this time of year? The gifts that last, that mean the most, are often not material possessions festively wrapped at Saks (though I do love Saks…), but gifts of the heart, moments of intimacy, secrets shared, fears expressed, wishes articulated, and moments intentionally planned for, embraced, and shared. This brings me to my favorite holiday story of love, which you haven’t heard yet, because it just happened. It’s about my 11-year old cousin, Sarah. Sarah sat her middle-aged parents down in their Lenox Hill kitchen about two weeks ago, and informed them that she identified as “gender-fluid” (neither “he” nor “she”), and bisexual (being open to romantic and erotic experiences with her peers of any gender). Sarah told her folks that she’d given this a great deal of reflection, had read articles about gender online, and would prefer being referred to by the pronoun “they,” rather than she, from now on.
98 • Resident January 2016
Their (I am also honoring Sarah’s request) parents called me. I get a lot of calls like this from family, friends, and friends of friends. I love these calls, because I get a chance to give back, free of charge. It’s one of the benefits of having a psychotherapist and sex therapist in the family.
gift, that of ourselves, to those we love? The New Year is right around the corner. Isn’t it time to find out?
Till next time!
What was unique about this phone call was that their parents, rather than fix, change, or reject, wanted to understand and support their child. I’m grateful I had the resources to help them do that. Unfortunately, this is not how all parents respond to a child’s coming out, and those tragedies alone could fill a book, but this is a happy article—so I’m moving on. Sarah gave their parents the gift of a brave, honest, and intimate connection this holiday season, and their parents returned that gift with their own unconditional love and support. How sadly rare that is. Perhaps this is why we see a spike in suicidal behavior around the holidays. People feel there is no room for their authentic expression amid all the “merriment” and “joy.” Where are we not being authentic? Where are we conforming when we could be forging our own path? Where are we hiding when we could be expressing ourselves more freely? Where are we missing the opportunity to give the real

Personalized Care for Rotator Cuff Injuries ••• of leading shoulder surgeons that has only 420 members worldwide. He also co-designed a shoulder replacement and now travels throughout the United States and internationally to teach residents and practicing orthopedic surgeons the techniques of shoulder-replacement surgery. “I enjoy teaching surgeons with the hope that this will lead to better patient care,” he said.
MINIMAL OR NO SURGERY
P
ersonalizing care is key for orthopedic shoulder surgeon Dr. Francis Mendoza. If you love golf, he creates a recovery program that integrates swinging your club. If tennis is your thing, he’ll have you start with groundstrokes and progress to serves as your shoulder heals. If you’re a conductor or musician, Dr. Mendoza will incorporate use of your instrument during recovery.
Although he’s a surgeon, Dr. Mendoza said he’s keen to avoid surgery whenever possible. “Most shoulder conditions are treated successfully without surgery, so that’s another aspect that I enjoy,” he said. Rotator cuff injuries are the most common shoulder injuries Dr. Mendoza treats. These range from bursitis and tendinitis to rotator cuff tears with or without associated boney spurs.
“There are a number of ways to integrate the activities people enjoy into their treatment program. To accomplish this, I rely on my engineering background combined with my extensive, medical knowledge of the shoulder,” he explained.
The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that attach the ball of the humerus (upper arm) to the socket of the scapula (shoulder blade). Age, repetitive use, or trauma can cause it to tear, especially in people over 40. Symptoms of a tear include pain when lifting or lowering the arm, weakness, and loss of mobility.
Over 40 years ago, Dr. Mendoza left a career in aerospace engineering to pursue medicine. After he earned his doctor of medicine at Columbia University, he trained in orthopedic surgery and did a specialized fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at New York’s Presbyterian Hospital.
Depending on the severity of the tear and the patient’s needs, rotator cuff tears can often be treated effectively with a combination of rest, use of a sling, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medication or a cortisone injection.
When Dr. Mendoza opened his private practice, now in Midtown East, he decided not to be part of any insurance network. “When you have pressures, like quotas of patients per hour to treat, unfortunately, something has to give,” he said. To this day, he remains an out-of-network physician in order to better serve his patients and personalize their care. Dr. Mendoza is also the director of shoulder and elbow surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital. He is a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, an invitation-only organization

rotator cuff, a surgeon needs to carefully cut through the deltoid muscle and other layers of tissue. By contrast, arthroscopic surgery gets to the problem while avoiding “all the innocent tissue that would ordinarily have to be cut.” “So there’s less blood loss, there’s less overall injury to the surrounding tissues, and the patients can recover faster with much less discomfort,” Dr. Mendoza said. Arthroscopic surgery uses several pencil-size instruments to enter the shoulder via three to four small holes in the skin. One instrument— the arthroscope—is a camera that surgeons use to display the internal damage on an external TV monitor. Often a small motorized bur with a surrounding vacuum is used to shave off spurs and remove debris. Rotator cuff tears can generally be repaired with small anchors placed into the bone. Depending on the extent of the repair, patients often can start using their arm the following day for light activities. Recovery for open procedures begins with six weeks in a sling. With arthroscopic procedures, Dr. Mendoza’s patients are often back on the golf course or tennis court or in the gym in that time, using the activities they love to help them heal. “By personalizing the patient’s care around their otherwise demanding life, their recovery becomes easier,” Dr. Mendoza said.
“Only if these don’t work, is surgery considered,” he said. “Most rotator cuff tears can be treated with arthroscopic surgery.”
THE LESS CUT THE BETTER Surgery removes bone spurs and/or inflamed tissues so the tendons have room to heal. If the rotator cuff is badly torn, a surgeon may also need to repair it. Arthroscopic surgery has some big advantages over the open procedures that Dr. Mendoza once learned in medical school. Open procedures require an incision that’s about two and a half inches in length. To reach the injured

orn and raised in New York City, Anthony Rubio grew up immersed in his Latin culture, loving everything from music and cuisine to the elaborate fashions that inspired him, and began his evolution as one of the hottest designers today. Being influenced by the four-legged world was a natural for a man who loves his pets so much. With a formal education in women’s wear design, and 20 years of experience creating and innovating new concepts and techniques, Anthony Rubio had no reservations about delving into the world of pet fashions, earning for himself the title of Master Pet Couturier. The pet industry is estimated to be a 50 billion dollar industry worldwide, and offered an opportunity for Rubio to reach into his countless inspirations and create designs that every dog owner in the know wants to possess.

achieve perfection, stemming from hours of sketching and creating shapes and forms, which are then meticu-lously executed—finished only when Rubio is completely satisfied with the final product. It all began with just the wag of a tail, when Rubio’s life forever changed after he rescued an abused Chihuahua that he named Bandit. In fact, he developed an interest in creating ca-nine clothes out of necessity. Chihuahuas tend to tremble from the cold, and out of concern he started designing jackets and shirts for Bandit. It was for Halloween that he decided to delve back into his design background. On a friend’s advice, he entered Bandit into a costume contest at a local pet store; Bandit went as Elvis the King, and he won. The costume included bell bottoms and a silver spandex cape, allowing for flexibility, which Bandit loved. He pranced in front of the judges and won their hearts. They went on to other events, and people started taking notice of his creations. Before he knew it, dog owners were asking to commission him for their pets. The rest, as they say, is history. Rubio is constantly fascinated with the fashion industry, and loves to imagine what is yet to come. He en-joys the challenge of creating something different and more spectacular than the last design, especially us-ing unconventional materials. Today, Rubio is on the boards of several fundraising organizations, and most recently was honored and awarded by The Humane Society of New Rochelle for his humanitarian
efforts in championing animal adoption. He works to facilitate raising funds and awareness for the plight of animals and to make the world a place deserving of their unconditional love. Ru-bio—along with his personal muses, twin one-year-old Chihuahuas, Bogie (the brunette, named after Humphrey Bogart) and Kimba (the blonde, named after a famous anime he-ro)—help abandoned, lost, and abused pets when and however they can. The boys have become heroes, recognized worldwide for campaigns that have gone viral. His pets are indeed his muses, but Rubio points out that his creations are not for all animals. Not all pets are receptive and/or comfortable wearing clothes, and he doesn’t believe in forc-ing an animal to wear them. He does get people wanting to dress their pets, but he conducts an interview process, as he needs to know that he is not causing an animal any discomfort. That said, his designs are created with great attention to comfort, breathability, and safety. So if your dog’s inner fashionista is waiting to get out, Rubio’s designs are most definitely the best way to channel it.

ou’ve seen the Zarin Fabrics home furnishings emporium on The Real Housewives of New York, in which Jill Zarin starred, but its wares have also been featured in hundreds of other television shows and movies over the years, since the place is a prime source for set designers. “Some of the shows that we’ve sold to include The Knick, Madam Secretary, Girls, 30 Rock, Sex and the City and Gossip Girl,” says David Zarin, the third generation to run the family business, now celebrating its 80th anniversary. Dad Bobby Zarin added that over the years, their Lower East Side warehouse was used as a set in films starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. “It’s hard to find a Broadway show where you’re not going to have our fabrics in the background, because we’ve been doing this since 1936,” Bobby says. Usually the Zarins don’t actually know what the set designers have in mind. “Sometimes I’m sitting in a show, and somebody who works there might recognize me and say, ‘Oh, that’s all your fabric on the stage,’” he laughs. Celebrities shop at the store as well, but the Zarins won’t divulge names. However, David is willing to volunteer that Taylor Swift recently bought some fabrics there—because it’s already been reported everywhere, as paparazzi snapped the pop star carrying Zarin shopping bags. The Zarins came to the current location, a warehouse occupying a full city block, accidentally 40 years ago, when a fire devastated the original retail location nearby. Bobby got a D.J. friend to drive around the neighborhood in a truck with loudspeakers blasting, encouraging people to shop at Zarin’s new location, but it turned out that that was illegal. They heard that this kind of thing was okay if

you are performing a public service, and with an election right around the corner, they added, “Don’t forget to vote on Election Day” to the spiel. “By the time our original building was rebuilt, two years later, we had an established business going at our fabric warehouse,” Bobby recalls. “And it’s 40 years later now, and it all started because of that accident. So, you never know in life.” Son David went his own way after college, working in real estate. He’d grown up in the business. “I remember coming here as a child on Sundays with my father, since as early as I can remember, cutting swatches for customers on the floor,” David says. He came back permanently in 2007, when he heard that his father was thinking about pulling back and hiring someone else to run the business. “When I got wind of that, I said ‘no way that’s going to happen,’” David says. “That’s when I stepped in and said, ‘Nobody can do this better than family.’” Bobby is happy to let David take the reins these days, and proudly notes that he has introduced new products, including accessories and furnishings. They are also planning an anniversary celebration. “What we do is the old tradition where we serve our customers,” Bobby says. “They become part of our family. We really get to know them. We take good care of them,” he says. “And that’s, I think, what kept us successful all these years.”

The Oosten
family
In the heart of South Williamsburg lies the Oosten, a new luxury building designed with Brooklyn’s ebb and flow in mind. Created by Dutch mastermind Piet Boon in collaboration with Think Architecture, the interiors mix functionality with beautiful aesthetics. The color palette ranges from dark to light, but remains serene and neutral. Concrete and steel are met with environmentally-friendly elements, floor-toceiling windows, and outdoor patios that allow the outdoors to seamlessly enter the home. The building itself is made of local materials that pay homage to the area’s industrial past. All of this is just a skip away from the Williamsburg Bridge.
FEATURE
Boon has been named as one of the most influential designers from the Netherlands in recent years. The Oosten has been his largest commission thus far. He blends classical style with natural elements that create a beautiful modern environment, all while keeping the Williamsburg vibe. Featuring Viking and Smeg appliances, hardwood floors, and ceiling heights of 10 feet, The Oosten is Brooklyn’s most notable upscale building to incorporate Dutch modernism with luxury living. The Oosten’s amenities include two lobbies, 24-hour concierge service, landscaped rooftop with a reflecting pool and outdoor grills, a lap pool, fitness center with spa, a lounge, and a children’s playroom, and offers private parking. Located off of busy Bedford Ave., the building is just one subway stop away from Manhattan and is in one of Brooklyn’s culturally infused, hippest neighborhoods. The culinary neighborhood takeover provides the perfect location for food lovers. The property is comprised of 216 units, with seven distinct residence types: townhouse, duplex, floor-through-loft, 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom apartment, and penthouse options.

Important Tips of the Trade Interested in obtaining a mortgage? 10 year treasury yields (the best barometer for future of mortgage rates) are the same today as they were in December of 2014 which means the potential hike in rates has not been built-in to rates. All signs point to an increase in rates and prime rate moving upwards soon. Historically, when rates go up the higher cost of borrowing creates less money a borrower can afford to spend on a new property. With long-term interest rate locks, buyers can lock in rates from 90 days to 18 months. This will give buyers peace of mind to know the fixed costs for mortgage payments NOW rather than taking interest rate risk for a closing one year to 18 months later. To avoid pitfalls, if you are thinking about obtaining a mortgage, get fully pre-approved. It goes a long way to closing deals expeditiously. Working with a good real estate professional is important to assist, manage and guide the way to your most important purchase. It is an achievement to own in NYC and one that will make you proud!

Luxury Miami Real Estate in 2016
Info & Advice from Industry Expert Roberto Malca

WHAT’S HOT
T
he Miami real estate market is always hot, but right now things seem to be absolutely sizzling. Demand is increasing, but so is inventory, and more and more people from New York—and around the world—are realizing the immense value in investing in Miami. That’s why we sought out the expert advice of Roberto Malca, a top producer at Cervera Real Estate, who has extreme knowledge and experience in the luxury Miami market. With a keen understanding of the area and its many properties, Malca is one of the most trusted names in upscale residential Miami real estate. In 2012, he won both a Quarterly Top Producer Award and the Most Improved Award, and he’s placed hundreds and hundreds of clients into the hottest, most luxurious residences in the area. Simply put, he is THE go-to guy for the best of the best in Miami living. Here, we chat with Malca on the market, the area, and the outlook for the new year: Have you seen any major changes and/or trends in the Miami real estate market lately?
FEATURE
•
••
I am not seeing any major changes in the market, rather a continuation of growing trends. Buyers continue to look for larger units that will serve as full-time residences or vacation homes where buyers will spend more time. Mexicans and New Yorkers continue to discover Miami in a wonderful way, and we think that they will play an even greater role as we move into the season. What advice would you give to New Yorkers looking to buy a home in Miami? Are there certain things they should keep in mind? Miami equals sun, sand, and zero taxes on the state level. This is something many buyers aren’t aware of. So my advice is that research is key to making good decisions. Also, trust in your broker and the developer is fundamental. If

you don’t have the necessary information or the confidence in those who provide you with it, then you are setting yourself up for failure. I also recommend that buyers choose the neighborhood, not the project. East Edgewater will give you the best combination of luxury and location for the value. Biscayne Beach and Elysee Miami are great options in this up-andcoming neighborhood, which is bordered by Biscayne Bay, Design District, Mid Town, Wynwood, and the Arts and Entertainment District. Coconut Grove is great for buyers looking to raise a family. It’s one of Miami’s oldest neighborhoods and one of its most charming. Coconut Grove is also home to some of Miami’s best private school, parks, healthcare, and dining options. Park Grove is a great option for those looking to buy in Coconut Grove. Sunny Isles and Surfside are two great options to the north, especially for investors. Both zones are lower in density in comparison to Miami’s other bureaus to the south, and are complete with miles of beaches. Faena Hotel Miami Beach, Four Seasons Hotel Miami, Fendi Château Residences, Porsche Design Tower, Residences by Armani Casa, the Ritz Carlton South Beach, Jade Signature, Muse Residences, and Eighty Seven Park are the ultras in luxury with great finishes and amenities. Are there any new, up-and-coming Miamiarea neighborhoods that are getting a lot of attention these days? East Edgewater is, in my opinion, Miami’s most up-and-coming district and offers buyers the best price. It is ideally situated at the crossroads of culture, entertainment, and billions of dollars’ worth of development. Many of Miami’s hottest projects are here. And just to the north, the Design District is poised to become Miami’s version of Rodeo Drive, while Wynwood Arts District has become an international destination
for the jet set, thanks to Art Basel Miami Beach. Last but not least, the city’s best museums and performing arts institutions are steps away just south in Downtown. What can home buyers and sellers in Miami expect for 2016? In 2016, expect delivery of significant new inventory. This will create wonderful options for renters who have been sitting on the sidelines waiting for new product to buy. As these buildings get completed, we can expect conventional financing to step up and provide mortgages to homeowners at standard rates and terms, which will create increased demand from locals.

he KRE Group and National Real Estate Advisors recently announced the topping out of the first phase of Journal Squared at 563 feet, a property that will ultimately be a three-tower, mixed-use project in Jersey City’s historic Journal Square neighborhood. The 53-story building will include 538 luxury rental residences adjacent to the Journal Square PATH Station. The comprehensive three-phase project will also include the construction of a 60-story tower and a 70-story building. When completed, the transformative project will bring a total of 1,838 rental residences, 36,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, and a pedestrian-friendly, public plaza to the neighborhood. It will be another example of what Jersey City’s mayor Steven Fulop calls “one of the greatest revitalization stories in the country.” Jeff Kanne, President and CEO of National Real Estate Advisors, calls Journal Squared a “game-changing project in Jersey City” and notes that it “combines vanguard design, unmatched transportation links, and outstanding public amenities….the best of what inspired urban redevelopment must deliver: a highly attractive city environment, convenient lifestyles, and an anchor for future growth.” Scheduled for completion in late-2016, Phase I of Journal Squared will offer 538 studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom rental residences with luxury finishes and appointments and stunning views of the Hudson River, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and downtown Manhattan. The building will also feature over 10,000 square feet of amenities, including a full-service fitness center, golf simulator, children’s playroom, and outdoor pool. A one-of-a-kind, 2,000 square-foot entertaining space will be located on the 53rd floor. Phase II will feature 700 rental residences in a 70-story building, and Phase III will include 600 rental homes in a 60-story building. A total of 920 parking spaces will also be included in the development, and the developers plan to pursue LEED certification for all three buildings.
FEATURE
Finally, a significant community element of Journal Squared will be a new public plaza to be built along the Magnolia Avenue entrance to the PATH station. At the heart of the plaza will be an open space courtyard lined with trees, greenery, and seating, encouraging pedestrian activity and social interaction. The plaza will also feature a “kiss-and-ride” cul-de-sac for safe and convenient commuter pick-up and drop-off. Once completed, the project will prove to be as beautiful as it is transformative.
