Sultan of Stains “Ask The Expert” Featuring this special column every other month in RESIDENT MAGAZINE “Sultan of Stains” is actually John Mahdessian, the President and owner of The Madame Paulette Organization. Let the “Sultan of Stains” magically whisk away your grime. How can a bride preserve the quality of a gown to ensure it looks just as good as the day they bought it? Any wedding gown should be treated and handled as if it is being preserved for a lifetime. It would be best to keep your gown away from heat, direct sunlight and you should have a woven, breathable, unbleached Muslin-type of garment bag so it lets the natural fibers of the garment breathe while protecting it from sunlight and dust particles. Also, it would be best to keep the gown in a climate controlled zone that stays anywhere between 50-80 degress max; basements and attics are not recommended due to the variance of temperature in these environments.
What would Madame Paulette suggest as the best solution to hanging your wedding gown?
If your gown
comes with hanger straps, it is highly reccomended to use the straps to offset any additional weight of the gown from the actual material. You can either hang the garment per the instructions using their accompanying hanger straps on a nice sturdy hanger with indentations to accomodate the straps. You want to hang it so it’s a spacious area and doesn’t crush up the gown.
As a special note, it is completetly based on the construction of the gown specifically the shoulder areas supporting the total weight of the gown on how it should be hung. If you have lace and or any loosely woven fabric it is best not to hang the gown as it can stretch out the shape.
For more information about Madame Paulette’s services, please contact a garment care consultant at (347) 689-7078. To have your questions featured in our “Ask The Expert” column, please send photos with detailed questions to asktheexpert@madamepaulette.com. THE EDITOR T
here are so many things I love about New York—too many to name here, in fact—but one of the things that makes it such a special city is its ability to evolve and adjust, without ever truly changing what it is at heart. Every day, another incredible restaurant opens up, but the true flavor of the city remains the same. The same can be said for its shopping (NY’s style is always changing, yet always the best), its theater, its nightlife, and everything else; we’re always presented with the latest, greatest, and most modern of options, but we also can count on our favorites never leaving us. The same, of course, can be said about the people of this great city. At the Resident, we like to subscribe to this philosophy, this dichotomous, modern-yetclassic, changing-but-staying-the-same modus operandi. After all, if it works for NYC, it works for us. With that in mind, I’m incredibly excited to begin my position as Editor-in-Chief—or as longtime readers of the Resident will notice, return to my position here. I’m back, and I couldn’t be happier. While I am bringing about a change—and promise many great things to

look forward to—I will make sure that everything you love about the publication stays the same. Like NY, we will continue to evolve and grow, but who we are at heart won’t change. I hope you enjoy this July issue, filled with starstudded soirees, hot Hamptons happenings, glamorous getaways, and more than a few tips on how to look and feel your best. There’s also an exclusive interview with Alysia Reiner, the incredibly talented actress who plays Natalie “Fig” Figueroa on Orange is the New Black (among many other TV and film roles), and was an absolute pleasure to get to know. She’s a true New Yorker and an artist in every sense of the word, and I’m thrilled to feature her on our cover this month. As we’re now in the midst of my favorite time of year, you can expect plenty of exciting things in the coming months. Until then, happy July, and thank you for welcoming me back to this beloved magazine!

Alan Cumming & Kristin Chenoweth @ Tony Awards
Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming hosted the duller than usual 49th Annual Tony Awards. The producers of this show need to rush to Jimmy Fallon or Seth MacFarlane as the material for the hosts fell flat and flatter. The Tonys should be hosted by comedians who can think on their feet and razzel dazzle the viewers. The exception to this rule is Hugh Jackman, who is endlessly entertaining and has the bigger than life personality needed for this job. He also has the ability to draw audiences from the Great White Way and Tinsel Town. The American Theatre Wing should bring him back to do this job whenever he’s free. Hugh wisely skipped the show which dragged and I mean dragged on and on. If you were stuck in the audience at Radio City Music Hall, you were there for over four hours without drinks or snacks, which are usually available. This said, there were some exciting production

numbers from Something Rotten, On the Town and The King and I. The sad and wonderful truth is there’s nothing like live theater and television, try as it might, cannot duplicate that magic.
The King and Gigi Among the biggest winners of the night was six-time Tony nominee Kelli O’Hara, who finally and deservedly won for Best Actress in a Musical in The King and I, which also took home Best Revival. Kelli, who gave one of the nights most compelling acceptance speeches and danced off the stage in her heels to wild applause, told her parents “You don’t have to pretend. It’s alright tonight because I won!” As to her method she said, “I never try to watch the movie of the things I’ve been in because with a revival, you’re being compared to somebody else.” Why not watch the movie staring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr after you see the stage version at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, as this will give you an interesting perspective on Broadway versus Hollywood. You could also have done this with Gigi, which stared the vivacious Vanessa Hudgens in the role played by Leslie Caron in the film. Although Gigi sadly ran for just 86 shows, the original starring Karin Wolfe only clocked 100. Vanessa brought vitality and a younger audience to Broadway. I think you’ll find she’ll be back on the boards. She told me, “When the right opportunity presents its self I’ll be back. I loved being on Broadway.”
Sheila Rosenblum @ the Plaza
Jean Shafiroff @ the Plaza
Fun Home Michael Cerveris, who took home the Tony for Best Actor in the dark and provocative Fun Home, which won Best Musical said, “I do feel pressure. I have always been able to surprise people because they didn’t know to expect anything from me; now people are starting to have expectations.” The good news is he delivers. Don’t miss this one. Dame Helen Mirren won for Best Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Audience. She confessed, “My poshed-over voice was learnt and assimilated. I was an Essex girl.” The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime was named Best Play. This inspiring show that had a sold out run in London before crossing the pond also garnered a Tony for newcomer Alex Sharp, who gave hope and encouragement to all the dreamers. “This time last year I was picking up my diploma from Julliard. Now I’m holding this Tony. Wow.” Broadway favorite Christian Borle picked up his second Tony for the exuberant mustsee musical Something Rotten. “I’ve heard rumors about myself that are true - and nobody likes that. But there’s actually something very liberating when you hear a false rumor because you realize there’s nothing you can do.”

Vogue’s Red Carpet There’s been a lot of chatter about William Ivey Long’s brilliant idea of bringing in Anna Wintour to Vogue up the red carpet, and it worked. Things get prettier when Anna’s on patrol and honestly, the Tonys needed a style makeover. I predict that despite opposition from an unlighted group of old timers, Anna will be given an official advisory title by the American Theatre Wing and that she’ll become a Tony voter next year. The Tony’s and Broadway need Anna and Harvey Weinstein, who’s Finding Neverland was snubbed. They can bring stylish star power that will help bring new blood to the theatre. Trust me, they are coming rather the old fuddy duddies want it or not.
A Raspberry for The Roundabout Theater I want to warn all ticket buyers to ask about substitutions in the show you’re going to see as you enter the theater. The Roundabout Theater is especially egregious about how they tell you who’s out of their shows. Although they claim to give sufficient notice about, say Michelle Williams being out sick during Cabaret with Alan Cummings or that Kristin Chenoweth has taken the night off from On The 20th Century on the Saturday night before the Tonys to prepare her banter; in truth, they do not do enough. The easy and most honest way to handle this is to tell you who’s out of the show when you’re picking up your 200+ dollar tickets at the box office. When your going to see a star and they are not in the show, you need to be warned as many ways as possible. I’ve seen rows of people leave when they weren’t made aware the star was out of the show. And don’t even bother to ask for a new set of tickets or a refund from Roundabout Theater, whose policy is to keep your money and bank it the minute the lights have gone down and you realize your stuck with a substitute player no matter how good they may be . Buyer beware.

Selected media, including yours truly, Black Enterprise’s Carolyn Brown, NBC’s Amber Payne, and Simply Rides’ Sekou Writes, hit the red carpet for the American Black Film Festival’s premiere of “Dope” at the SVA Theater. Taraji P. Henson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Larry Wilmore, and more attended the 19th ABFF held June 11-14 in New York City. As one of the presenting sponsors, Cadillac hosted a media luncheon—a Cadillac Conversations brunch—the Hot in Hollywood Panel of young artists who included Lance Gross and “Power’s” Naturi Naughton, as well as the Best of The ABFF Awards Ceremony.

Summer Rescue and Repair By Ally Gargiulo T he summer months are filled with barbeques and beach days—when we all enjoy basking in the warmth with a drink in our hands and the sun on our skin. As uplifting as it all is to our moods, however, the indulgences do damage to our bodies. Luckily, there are ways to correct our indiscretions; here’s how: For the Face: J. Tav Clinical Skincare It’s a mistake we’ve all made: Forgetting to apply sunscreen. Soon enough, that beautiful summer glow fades and the sun damage starts to show. Luckily, Esthetician Joie Tavernise is able to aid in the correction of sun damage, with an effective approach to skin repair through non-surgical, non-invasive methods. Her spa, located on the Upper East Side, is nothing short of spectacular. Each procedure performed by Tavernise begins with an indepth skin analysis to ensure

its effectiveness for the individual. The LED Light Therapy treatment is a great way to correct environmental skin damage. During the non-invasive procedure, an infrared LED light is exposed to the skin, and the light-energy rejuvenates damaged skin while repairing issues such as dark spots, facial redness, and
blemishes. The LED light stimulates the skin’s healing process naturally, without introducing other substances. The treatment has no downtime and is pain-free, making it an excellent choice for anyone, during or after the summer. Another skin-healing favorite is the Hydrafacial, which aids in purifying your skin after long, hot days. During this procedure, the patented HydroPeel tool exfoliates the skin multiple times, using a variety of abrasive edges that suction impurities out of the skin in a spiral-like motion. This creates a vortex effect, dislodging impurities safely and effectively. Once the skin is purified, antioxidants and Hyaluronic Acid are applied to the skin for protection and nourishment. www.jtavclinicalskincare.com For the Body: Physique 57 A favorite among celebrities and New York’s fitness-fanatics, Physique 57 offers gut-busting classes that combine cardio, strength train-

You’ll quickly see and feel results in your arms, backside, legs, and abs, and undo the damage done by summer overindulgence. The Physique Namastique Workshop—also new to Bridgehampton—is the perfect combination of their signature moves and yoga postures, and will have you feeling the burn while strengthening and lengthening your muscles. There’s no better way to find your Zen and your six-pack abs. Looking to get a workout in while still enjoying the breathtaking Montauk views? Accordingly, the hotel offers yearround ways to enjoy its location and its loveliness, making sure out-oftowners aren’t the only ones to have all the fun. THE GREAT OUTDOORS The Best Al Fresco Dining in the Hamptons
J
By Nicole Castillo
uly 4th is upon us and summer is in full swing. What better way to soak up the summer sun than by dining outdoors. Don’t miss out on these classic Hamptons spots with the best outdoor eating, drinking, and hobnobbing. Authentic Texas BBQ rustic roadhouse style can be found at Townline BBQ in Sagaponack, with views overlooking picturesque Hamptons farmland. And nearby, on Main Street in Bridgehampton, Almond’s sidewalk dining serves up contemporary French bistro cuisine with a side of people-watching. Looking for the best place to catch a sunset? Look no further than Beacon in Sag Harbor, where a wraparound porch offers the ultimate sunset view of the harbor.
On the edge of the village in East Hampton, Fresno’s landscaped patio, complete with a fountain, provides outdoor dining under a pergola with New American cuisine that emphasizes simple yet sophisticated preparations of local fare. Or try newcomer Winston’s Bar & Grill, where guests can enjoy a steak and seafood menu infused with Caribbean flavors for a fresh taste of the season on their outdoor patio. In the heart of the village, Rowdy Hall, a lively neighborhood eatery, is serving up English pub and French bistro cuisine—we recommend the Rowdy burger. For fancier fare, the posh Nick & Toni’s is one of the Hamptons’ top tables. Their eclectic Mediterranean cuisine, with Tuscan and Provencal accents, puts the emphasis on local bounty from the restaurant’s garden, and their patio dining may be your best chance to spot a celebrity.

Beyond the Beer How to up the ante on your burgers this Fourth of July
Burgers and beer—they go together like apple pie and ice cream, like, well, fireworks and the fourth of July. But here’s the thing: it turns out burgers can be paired with—and enhanced by—an array of cocktails, making the experience that much tastier. In fact, the right cocktail incorporates ingredients that enhance the flavor of the meat, while refreshing you on a hot summer day, without filling you up (it is bikini season, after all!). So this Independence Day, break with tradition and head to one of these spots for a pairing that will really make your burger pop.
Continue east and you’ll find Bostwick’s Chowder House— arguably one of the best lobster rolls in the Hamptons; but don’t take our word for it—hit up their outdoor patio and see for yourself. The competition for the best lobster roll heats up even further east where the classic seaside shack known as The Clam Bar is serving up the biggest contender. This outdoor-only dining spot is the pinnacle of fun in the sun, and shorts and sunglasses are required dress. If a livelier atmosphere is what you crave, then La Fondita in Amagansett is the place to be. This casual Mexican eatery specializes in traditional Mexican street food, and picnic tables dot the outdoor garden. If you are heading to “The End” (aka Montauk), head off-the-beaten path to discover The Backyard at Sole East, a hidden oasis among beautiful gardens that offers the perfect spot for dining poolside. Their fresh, local, and sustainable seasonal Mediterranean cuisine is the perfect complement to this relaxed environment. Wanna watch the waves crash? The fishing town is also home to Navy Beach, a beachfront restaurant where you can put your feet in the sand and dig into coastal cuisine influenced by local seafood and produce. With the perfect blend of scenery, socializing, and sun—not to mention seasonal cuisine—the best way to take advantage of summer in the Hamptons is to spend it outdoors.
Pat LaFreida Burger & Brooklyn Dill Pickle at New York Hilton Midtown The hotel’s Herb N’ Kitchen menu boasts famed burgers by Pat LaFreida— widely known as the city’s foremost meat purveyor—with New York cheddar on a brioche roll, and is perfectly paired with their newly-debuted Brooklyn Dill Pickle cocktail. Taking the pickle out of the burger and onto the glass, the pairing is a spin on the classic Gin and Tonic, with fresh muddled dill, cucumber, and lime served with a fried pickle chip. www.newyorkhiltonhotel.com Prime Cheeseburger & Dutch Mule at Del Frisco’s Grille New York The Del Frisco’s Grille Prime Cheeseburger, made with a blend of USDA Prime short rib, brisket, and chuck, is topped with cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles and The Grille’s signature secret recipe sloppy sauce. The refreshing Dutch Mule, made with Nolet’s Gin, ginger beer, grapefruit slices, and mint, provides a light balance to this hearty burger. www.delfriscosgrille.com Ultimate Stacked Burger & Wax Poetic at Waldorf Astoria New York The Ultimate Stacked Burger at The Waldorf’s Bull and Bear Prime Steakhouse is served on a brioche bun with custom-made Waldorf Astoria thick cut applewood smoked bacon (twice the normal thickness!), chipotle mayo, bourbon-caramelized onions, and gruyere cheese. For a refreshing, warm-weather complement, sip the “Wax Poetic” (a twist on the “Bee’s Knee’s”), made using honey syrup from the hotel’s rooftop beehives, along with the lavender and coconut-flavored Bison Grass vodka. www.waldorfnewyork.com Bourguignon Burger & Ruinart Rose Brut NV at Corkbuzz Union Square The Bourguignon Burger at Corkbuzz Union Square pairs perfectly with a glass of rosé Champagne, specifically the Ruinart Rosé Brut NV, which adds contrast to the burger’s richness. The Bourguignon Burger, an 8-ounce Pat LaFreida brisketblend with fondue sauce made from emmanthaler, gruyere, red wine reduction, garlic, and cream, is heaven on a bun; the bacon-mushroom chutney, made with bacon, sliced button mushrooms, sliced onion, brown sugar, and red wine vinegar, makes it truly one-of-a-kind. www.unionsquare.corkbuzz.com/ — Pamela Jacobs

From Wall Street to Broad Street, OITNB’s Alysia Reiner is a Star Who Keeps on Rising By Pamela Jacobs Photography: Andrew Walker/Getty Hair and Makeup: Angel Morales/Bella on Demand

T
o say that Alysia Reiner’s career is on fire is like saying New York is a nice, little city. The actress—currently starring on Netflix’s Orange is the New Black—is seeing the kind of success most actors dream of. In addition to receiving multiple awards—including a Screen Actors Guild Award for her work in Sideways— and working alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton, Reiner is creating her own filmmaking empire. Together with writer/actress/producer Sarah Megan Thomas, Reiner has created a production company, Broad Street Pictures. Their first movie, Equity, with a projected release date of Summer 2016, is already generating a ton of buzz (it was recently announced that Breaking Bad’s Anna Gunn will star in the lead role). It tells the story of a high-powered Wall Street executive in the dramatic post-financial-crisis world, but it’s got an element that no other Wall Street movie has had before: The financial master-of-the-universe is a woman. Considering Reiner’s unstoppable
46 • Resident July 2015
drive, this comes as no surprise, and is certainly fitting. From her role as Natalie “Fig” Figueroa, the assistant warden everyone loves to hate on OITNB, to D.A. Wendy Parks on How to Get Away with Murder, Reiner is no stranger to playing powerful women. Yet when you meet her, you immediately see that she’s an incredibly talented actress; the intimidating, eat-you-alive persona is all an act. Sure, she’s as powerful as the women she plays, but she’s also incredibly sweet, down-toearth, and simply lovely. She and her husband, actor David Alan Basche, along with six-year-old daughter Livia, turned a dilapidated Harlem brownstone into an eco-friendly, sustainable zen retreat, and the love and warmth that fill the home are evident at every turn. We had the opportunity to sit down with Reiner in her eco-dream home, and among the family photos and green design details, got to discuss everything from life in New York to the prison system and parenting, and where the Broad Street Pictures producer is headed next. Pamela Jacobs: You’re considered a role model for green living. Did you
start out thinking ‘I want to do this major green home project and document it’? Alysia Reiner: No, I was just doing it. Whenever you start something that you might never do again, you want to teach people and help other people to do it right. I don’t know that I’m ever going to buy a brownstone again and redo it and turn it into my green Barbie dream house. But having done so, I learned so much and I felt like ‘of course I want to share this information.’ It’s like when you first have a child, you want to share every piece of information and sit with every other mother to save them the time and pain. Part of doing it is, sometimes you make mistakes. If you’re going to do anything for the first time, that means you’re not going to do it perfectly, but you learn and help others. PJ: And have you learned that especially since becoming a mother? AR: Oh my God, yes [laughs]! My husband—when we first had our daughter—put a tattoo on his wrist that says ‘there is no perfect,’ and he
did that for himself, because he calls himself a recovering perfectionist, but I felt like it was the biggest gift he could ever give me. PJ: So green living is a work in progress? AR: Yes, for me it started with my home and eating, and then got into personal care and cosmetics, and now I’m looking at it more and more. You can always go deeper. You need to think how much, with every choice you make, you make the world a better place. I think that’s a motto of mine in my life—be it in my art or my living. PJ: Your home is a great example of making your world a better place. I know it started out quite different than it is now; did you know that’s what you wanted to get into, a major renovation and green transformation? AR: We had no idea! I grew up on the Upper West Side of New York, and my parents got divorced and we lived in a bunch of different places, and I always loved the Upper West Side. My husband and I were on 84th Street for a long time in a fantastic
one bedroom with a garden, and when we decided we wanted to buy something, because we wanted to start a family, we looked it over 106 properties all over the city. Then we saw this house, and it was in foreclosure, the windows were cinderblocked shut, it was a crazy mess. There was no electric, no plumbing, no floors, and it was raining on you inside. It was a hot mess, and we had no idea what we were doing, but we decided to go for it, and we learned by doing it.
PJ: And do you now feel like you’re a real part of this neighborhood [Harlem]? AR: Absolutely. What’s amazing about this area is that it’s a true neighborhood. I feel like I live on Sesame Street—I cannot walk down my block without saying hello to everyone I pass. We all know each other really well and everyone is so friendly. We have two community gardens on the block, and there are so many families. On Sundays we do we do this thing called ‘wining with no whining.’ We get together, the kids hang out and the parents drink wine. We’ve really cultivated some amazing friendships here on the block and in this neighborhood. My husband always says ‘we weren’t exactly pioneers, but we jumped on the back of the bandwagon.’ PJ: The characters you play are always these really strong, powerful women, many of whom are definitely pioneers. AR: It’s crazy! It’s funny to me because I’m such a big mush ball, and being a mom is my favorite thing on the
July 2015 Resident • 47
planet. I cry at the drop of a hat, but for whatever reason I’m blessed to play these super strong, amazing women— some good, some bad. I’m about to play another one in the movie I’m doing this summer, called Equity. She’s a lawyer who’s investigating white collar crime and insider trading. I’m really excited about it. PJ: And this is the movie you’re producing as well? Was that part of the plan ahead of time? AR: It was; my producing partner, Sarah Megan Thomas, and I made a movie in 2012 [Backwards] that she wrote, starred in, and produced in less than a year, which takes a lot of energy! When we were doing it, we were like ‘We have to do this again,’ and then a lot happened with Orange, but we started talking about it again. We started wondering, if we were going to make a movie again, what would it be about? We had some really strong criteria: Something that would be commercially successful, something people had never seen before—which is so insanely hard to find—and something that makes the world a better place. We talked about so many ideas, but then we started talking about how we’ve never really seen a woman in the world of Wall Street, and how we’ve never really seen a realistic Wall Street
00 • Resident July 2015 48
movie featuring women. We’ve never seen how social media has affected Wall Street, and never really seen Wall Street post-2008. So she and I came up with this idea and wrote a treatment and hired an amazing writer named Amy Fox, whose first movie [Heights] went to Sundance, with Elizabeth Banks and James Marsden. She did an extraordinary job of taking all of our ideas and making it into a script, and then we started raising the money, and hired our amazing director, Meera Menon, whose first movie [Farah Goes Bang] went to the Tribeca Film Festival and won the Nora Ephron Prize. Now we’re hiring our cast, and I play this great supporting role, and it’s just really, really fun.
move the needle for women in business. The whole goal of the production company, Broad Street Pictures, is that more women will be in front of and behind the camera. You’ve got two female producers, a female director, a female writer, female production designer, and a female costume designer. We’re trying to hire as many women as possible, and it’s really exciting. This is a Wall Street movie where the lead is a woman, and you just don’t see that. PJ: It seems doing something different is a theme throughout your career, certainly with Orange as well.
AR: I always say I was deeply inspired by both Jenji [Kohan, OITNB creator] and Shonda [Rhimes, How to Get Away PJ: I’m sure you get excited about all with Murder producer]. They’re both roles, but does this feel a little special, just incredible women who have totally changed everything for women, and like a baby for you? we want to do that too. AR: Absolutely. It’s so hard and it makes me appreciate how much I love PJ: When Orange first premiered, in acting—which I love so much—but the first week it generated more viewers this is like, we came up with this idea than other Netflix original series before together and we’re about to actually and after it—which is not surprising— shoot it, and that’s so fun and exciting. but did you have any idea that it would We call it a ‘stealth bomb social impact be the success that it has become? film,’ because it’s an incredibly thrilling story and Amy’s written a great movie, AR: We had no idea. When we were and we know the director will direct a making it, it was like in this crazy little bubble; House of Cards haven’t even phenomenal film. So it’s our hope that it really helps premiered yet, so we had no idea what
Association. PJ: You’re involved in so many exciting things, and your career is exploding. Are you getting recognized a lot when you’re out and about in the city and on the subway? AR: I’m definitely getting recognized now more, especially after season 2, but for me the most important thing is my daughter, and I don’t want her to feel like she’s not important. One of the ways I’ve done this is through ‘no-selfie Sundays,’ with no selfies allowed. My daughter is everything to me. Alysia in a scene from Season 2 of OITNB. was going to be and what was going to happen, and then we made it, but really I still can’t believe it. PJ: The show is another example of changing the way women play a role in society and how’s that’s portrayed. Is that something that inspires you? AR: Absolutely. I think there is always a gestalt effect to everything, and whenever you’re surrounded by incredibly amazing women—and by the way, Jenji also has three kids— you’re like ‘I want to do that.’ One of my favorite shows is Girls, and the fact that Lena writes, directs, and stars in it—I’m like ‘how does she do that?’ When I was 20, I didn’t want to do that, I just wanted to be an actress. And then watching these amazing women, all of a sudden I was like, ‘well, maybe I do want to try that, that’s kind of cool.’ PJ: Right now there’s been all this talk in the news about the escaped inmates [from Clinton Correctional Facility] and the relationships between prisoners and guards. Are you now hyperaware of relationships like this, having done Orange? AR: Definitely. I’m not that into reading about prison breaks, but I’m very interested in how we can change the whole prison system. That, to me,
is what my job has illuminated. I’ve always been so curious about that, and I’ve never been a huge fan of the American prison system, with the choices that they make, and it wasn’t until this happened that I went ‘oh, now I found my way in.’ Piper [Kerman], who wrote the actual memoir, really helped connect us with the Women’s Prison Association, which is an amazing organization that helps women in prison and their families get resources when they’re in prison, and even more fully when they first come out, so they have help to acclimate and get housing and a job. That’s incredible for a multitude of reasons—for them and for society—to prevent recidivism. I’ve had so much fun with them. They actually gave me their Sarah Powell Huntington Award last year because I got so into it, in my obsessional way. With everyone I’d meet, I’d be like ‘oh you teach yoga, want to come teach yoga to women in prison? Oh you make organic sheets, want to donate organic sheets to every woman who comes out of prison?’ Then I also designed a piece of jewelry and 100% of the proceeds go to the Women’s Prison
Looking around her home, this is clear. She and husband David have created a remarkable example of green living, but beyond that, they’ve created a home, in every sense of the word. Their daughter’s art fills the walls, and her livelihood fills the space. They may be two highly successful actors with unstoppable careers, but at the end of the day, they’re two true New Yorkers who care deeply about their role as parents, which is obviously their most important role. And Reiner—actress, producer, humanitarian—is proving to be quite the role model, as well.

Alysia’s Top Five O
ne of the best things about an exclusive celebrity interview is having the opportunity to pick their brains and hear their thoughts on life in NY. Alysia Reiner is a consummate New Yorker, and was happy to share some of her favorites—New York and otherwise: DESTINATION Without a doubt, Alysia’s most beloved place is Fire Island. Says the star, who owns a home there, “Fire Island is my favorite place on earth. I’ve been bringing my daughter there since she was born; it’s her favorite place on earth too. It’s just magic there…absolutely the best place on the planet.” When asked to elaborate, she quickly and happily named her five favorite things about the little barrier island: “No cars, the lemonade stands, painting shells, that the bay beach has no waves and the ocean beach has awesome waves, and naps.” (We agree!)
Acure Organics products, which are 100% natural and organic, fair trade certified, and affordable; they also donate proceeds to charity.
TRANSPORTATION Alysia may be a celeb, but she’s no diva. When Resident publisher Michael Travin had a chance to chat with her, he commented on the Metrocard in her wallet. “I’m a New Yorker!” she responded. “I’m a born-and-raised New Yorker and I always ride the subway. I wear my flats and carry my heels; I love to walk and take the subway, it gets you there much faster.” No stretch limos for this girl.
NUMBER ONE FAVORITE Family, for sure. When Alysia talks about her daughter, she lights up. The six-year-old is the joy of her life, and clearly has a mind of her own. When asked if her daughter wants to follow in her footsteps and become an actress, Alysia responded, “Oh no, she wants to be a volcanologist. She’s known that since she was two.” So what do you do when your daughter has such lofty (and frankly, awesome) ambitions? In addition to encouraging building, playing, and reading (not TV-watching or video-game-playing), you get artist Kathryn Veillette Neuhart to paint a mural of a volcano in the playroom, and create a sanctuary that’s definitely inspirational!
BEAUTY PRODUCTS Being green is not a fad for Alysia, it’s a lifestyle. This extends beyond her home and food to her clothing, face, and body. Her green skincare secrets? Coconut oil, rosewater, and

CAUSES In between acting, producing, and parenting, Alysia somehow finds time to devote herself tirelessly to charity work. She’s involved heavily in charities ranging from Actors for Autism and Amnesty International to The Young Women’s Leadership Network, GEMS, and the Women’s Prison Association, which stemmed from her role on Orange is the New Black.

7 Ways For Urban Athletes to Avoid Injury This Summer By Kenan Trebincevic
I
was not surprised when a new University of Pittsburgh study suggested people with back pain try physical therapy before spine surgery, since it’s cheaper and less risky. I was similarly unsurprised to learn that new articles in JAMA insist that working out 150 hours a week is optimum for health. As a 34-year-old, obsessively-fit Manhattan physical therapist for the last decade, I’ve seen many cases in which the hips, knees, ankles, and spine can be protected; hurt can be alleviated before trauma happens; and medical intervention can be avoided with the right exercise and attitude. But my busy, Type-A patients—many urban athletes—need to pay better attention if they don’t want to pay me a visit. I learned the importance of fitness the hard way, when my family escaped Bosnia during the Balkan war, and was
54 • Resident July 2015
offered shelter in the U.S. in 1993. Luckily, my father, Keka, a sports trainer, taught my brother Eldin and I how to eat, train, and treat our bodies well— even in the worst circumstances. Our good fitness habits helped us recover faster than many immigrants. Eldin is also a Manhattan physical therapist, and Dad, at 75 years old, still works out with me at our Astoria, Queens gym six hours a week.
especially important for commuters who cram into subways, busses, trains, and planes. Recent studies show people who sit 40 hours a week have an increased risk of diabetes, cancer, and heart problems. Not standing enough restricts blood circulation and causes clots that can kill you. Get a smart phone app or Apple watch to increase the number of daily steps you take.
Before the warm weather seduces weekend warriors who’ve been sedentary all winter to run six fast miles in the first hour, here are seven steps to keep you out of my office this season.
2. SITTING UGLY: If you must sit for long periods, make sure you’re sitting well and tall. Hunching over leads to discomfort, loss of normal back curvature, and disc herniation. Elevate your chair—at home and the office— so your feet are on the floor and your thighs point downward and are not parallel to your seat to prevent slouching. If the chair has no back rest, roll a small towel in burrito fashion and place it under your behind in a U-shape. This will pull your rear off the seat, giving you a small arch
1. TAKE A STAND: Before you even consider a real workout, try a week of getting up—for at least five minutes every hour. Walk around your work area, move your back and legs, pick up a package yourself instead of ordering a messenger, or walk the stairs instead of taking the elevator. This is
in the back to take needed stress off of your muscles and discs. Sometimes just getting a sturdier chair or repositioning its height can save your health. 3. STRETCH DAILY: In Miranda Esmondes-White’s new book “Aging Backwards,” the author, a former dancer, insists that 30 minutes of careful stretching will make you look and feel younger. Try Pilates, yoga, meditation, PT, or an exercise class with a friend, whatever will make it more likely that you continue on a regular basis. Hip-flexor and hamstring stretches are the most important to increase joint flexibility. 4. VISIT THE WATER COOLER, NOT THE DONUT CART: Stay hydrated with the healthiest fluid in the world: Water, at least eight glasses a day. While vegetable smoothies and fruit juices have vitamins, they also contain a ton of calories. Beware all soda (including diet, which has rightly been called “Devil Juice,”) and sports drinks filled with too much caffeine and fructose sugar. If you must eat junk food, allow yourself one meal and dessert a week, after a workout, and then get back to a better regimen. 5. WEAR IT WELL: It looked funny on the big screen when Reese Witherspoon’s “Wild” character hurt her feet from hiking in inadequate hiking shoes. Yet wearing the wrong gear accounts for one third of all the aches, pains, and sprains I see in my office. Get the right walking, running, or cross-training sneakers—and not for the third year in a row. Investing in something as minor as Orthotics—or another shoe insert—can prevent plantar fasciitis and other future injuries. Don’t constrict your lungs and stomach in clothes that are too tight for you out of vanity. For cycling, have your bicycle fitted and get bicycle shoes and a helmet. If you can’t afford it, you can often rent or borrow what you need. Yes, I know, it may ruin your selfie. But helmet hair looks a lot better than brain damage.
6. START EXERCISING SLOWLY: By Labor Day, my client Susan was swimming one mile in an hour. So the next Memorial Day, she assumed she could start where she left off—and hurt her back and shoulder before it was even June. I’ve overshot too. One afternoon, post-college, thinking I was still in my top running shape, I decided to race a high school sports star in the 100-meter dash (though my mother warned me not to) without a proper warm-up. Sure enough, I came back limping, with a hamstring strain my mother refused to pamper. No matter your age or fitness level, it’s best to begin slowly and work up momentum. Every marathon starts with the first mile. If you must exercise for an hour and a half on your first day out, cross train so you do a mix of walking, running, elliptical machine, or weights. That way you won’t stress out one muscle and ruin your whole summer before it starts. With weight lifting, vary duration, loads, sets, and repetitions. Always build endurance first, before strength. Progress the load on your joints and heart by getting on a stationary bike or elliptical machine prior to your run. Which is more important: losing a few pounds or losing your motor function for six months? 7. WHEN IN DOUBT, SEE A PROFESSIONAL: When you age or hurt yourself and have to heal, your
routine must change along with your mindset. Susan was shocked to hear me say that someone over 40 should usually not be swimming a mile, kickboxing, and speed walking every single day for more than an hour. She needed a full 24-hours off in between intense workouts to avoid hurting herself. You have to re-evaluate your goals every few years, be realistic, and stop thinking, “I used to be able to…” If you’ve had any kind of breaks, tears, disc problems, or surgery in the past, visit your doctor, a physical therapist, personal trainer, nutritionist, or exercise physiologist BEFORE you embark on a 100-mile hike in the Alaskan wilderness where, despite an urbanite’s impulse to call in for anything, they will not be making house calls. Ask to see somebody’s credentials, and get references from friends and colleagues. Slow down and start right to have a fun, active, and pain-free season. Following these guidelines, I’ll be seeing you on the trail this summer, and not on my midtown table.

Set off Fireworks with your Smile By Dr. Irene Grafman
T
he sun is out, the weather is warm— it’s the time of year that puts a smile on everyone’s face. We start getting invites to more BBQ’s and parties than we have outfits for. We look forward to long weekends away at the Hamptons, the Cape, and other amazing local getaways. Summer is finally here! As you walk into what may be the” it” event of the summer, the first thing you see is the one person you know who has the smile you’ve always wanted. It’s the perfect smile: White, straight, never seems to stain no matter how much coffee or red wine they drink. It seems to brighten up the face and gives that glow that you can’t turn away from. You’ve always wondered

how they can be so lucky to have such a gorgeous smile. There are the very rare but lucky ones who have those perfect pearly whites, but for most of us they do require some work and effort on our part. Many had to wear braces to get them looking straight, others had teeth whitening and are now having to maintain the white. But the smiles that always seem perfect are usually the ones with porcelain veneers. Using porcelain veneers, we can really give you the smile of your dreams. Using veneers can straighten and correct the shape of the teeth, whiten the color, and improve the aspect that creates the biggest impact—which is
to widen the smile. A wider smile balances and complements the face. By creating a look that is natural and customized to each individual, anyone can have that perfect smile. A gorgeous smile gives you confidence that radiates and demands attention. At the next event, yours could be the smile everyone dreams of! In the Hamptons, Dr. Mark is the go-to expert for anyone wanting to look good in their bathing suit. He is the only doctor on the East End to offer two CoolSculpting machines, the nonsurgical procedure that uses cooling technology to freeze fat away. In one session, he can use his two machines to do two different areas of your body at the same time. The treated area can lose approximately 25% of its fat.
Dr. Mark uses the laser to reduce pore size and fine lines, acne scarring, and pre-cancerous cells. In addition to offering the most technically advanced options in the field, Dr. Mark has extensive experience with the most effective anti-aging treatments and wrinkle reducing options, including Sclerotherapy for spider veins.
The MiXto Micro Factional CO(2) skin-resurfacing laser, the most advanced factional laser on the market, is Dr. Mark’s newest treatment option. It can be used to treat the face, neck, chest, hands, and arms and delivers better results in a 30-minute session than other lasers can accomplish in three treatments, with less discomfort, downtime, and cost. Louis Coraggio: The trampoLEAN Machine By Isaiah Negron
MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE SUMMER’S HOTTEST WORKOUT. Trainer to the Stars Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber, Uma Thurman, and the fashion icon Valentino have all turned to Exercise Physiologist and fitness expert Louis Coraggio to design programs to keep them strong, sexy, and healthy. A knowledgeable certified fitness trainer with over 15 years in the industry, he has been featured in GQ, Cosmopolitan, Weight Watchers, and Self Redbook magazines. Louis also appears regularly on television and is a fitness expert for FOX 5 News. Now Louis has jumped into a new realm when it comes to staying fit for the summer. He has reinvented the mini trampoline workout with trampoLEAN. “I was teaching a trampoline class at Chelsea Piers called Bounce and Burn. As the class became more popular a few of the members said they thought the class involved bouncing balls,” Louis remembers. “This is when I started brainstorming for a more descriptive name for the class.” Coraggio coined the name trampoLEAN and developed new exercises for it. The class soared in popularity and was rated the hottest class in NYC by W42ST magazine and named “One of the Best” classes in the city by Well+GOOD. Louis also does private classes for individual clients, families, or groups of friends. “Every time you bounce on the trampoline, every muscle in your body is contracting, especially your core muscles,” he says. “If you stick with the

His mobile class has proved to be a fun way to entertain guests on the East End. “If people have an event at their home and they don’t want to wait in line for a class or a studio, I’ll come to them,” Louis explains. “I get a lot of requests for birthday parties and bachelorette parties, people that don’t want to go out and drink or want to incorporate a fitness activity into their week at the beach.”

With his sights set on opening a new fitness studio in NYC this fall, he aims to make his innovative exercise program available to all. “My goal for the near future is to begin streaming trampoLEAN classes for people to do in their homes,” Louis says. “It’s an easy way for anyone to get their body tuned up and reach the health goals they have always wanted.”

The Power
of Liposculpture N
By Rafael G. Magana, MD Plastic Surgeon
ot only is liposuction one of the most common procedures performed today in the world of plastic surgery (third place in 2014 and up by 5% since 2013), it is also one of the procedures that has undergone the most technical advances in the past few years. We commonly hear teams like liposuction, super wet liposuction, smart liposuction, and Vaser 4D liposuction. The thing to understand is that they part from the same principles, which consist of injecting a special physiologic solution to the areas (tumescent solution) where liposuction will be performed. Then, one of several techniques to help make that fat easier to suction out is applied, such as mechanical means (cannula), laser, or ultrasound. This is followed by the actual suctioning of the excess fat from the site to be sculpted. When done with the right training finesse, experience, and training in plastic surgery—in addition to a full understanding of the patient’s expectations—liposuction can yield remarkable results. It is common to do liposuction to certain areas such as the abdomen or flanks (love handles).
My approach is to do a full body liposuction with enhancement of natural structures for a more pleasing aesthetic result. This is known as liposuction/liposculpture. 4D Vaser has become the tool of choice for this type of procedure. It allows for not only full body sculpting, but also harvesting of viable fat for transposition to other areas of the body, such as the buttocks, in order to provide the popular “Brazilian butt lift.” Liposculpture allows the surgeon to create a more defined and toned appearance of the muscles, since Vaser 4D also provides enough heat to help contraction of the skin to a greater extent than traditional liposuction, which did not contract the skin, leaving excess skin to contend with in a second procedure. This was typically seen in the arms and mid-thigh areas, as well as lower abdomen. In many cases, people who would have been a candidate for a tummy tuck (removal of skin and tissue from lower abdomen) now are able to get great results through Vaser technology (Ultrasound liposuction/liposculpture). Liposculpture procedures are typically done as an outpatient procedure and the patient is able to go home afterwards. A total of 5
lt. are typically removed from different areas of the body. If the patient requires more volume to be removed, I recommend they stay in the hospital overnight, although the great majority of patients do not require removal of more than 5lt. of fat (5kg or11 lbs.) for liposculpture. Recovery time is relatively short and patients are usually back to normal activities in a few days. There is usually some bruising, particularly in the arms and shoulder areas, and also the flank areas. Being a former sculptor and Hollywood makeup artist has led me to understand what questions to ask about a patient’s physical aspirations prior to operating. A diversity in ethnic backgrounds brings with it a variety of body type requests. Many men want a “six pack” and or prominent shoulder and triceps muscles with reduction of love handles and visibility of the inguinal area next to the lower six pack area under the belly button. Many times I will see women who request an “hour glass figure” with a buttock lift. Occasionally some women who are more athletic want to have visible abdominal musculature and combination therapy with breast augmentation. A milieu of pictures and images are reviewed with the patient and discussed in depth to have the same vision in both of our minds as to what the patient’s objectives and ultimate physical goals are. The key is good communication and a good candidate for full body liposculpture, a new trend in body reshaping and remodeling. I recommend that whomever performs your liposculpture is a “Core Trained Plastic Surgeon,” who are the most qualified surgeons to perform “head-to-toe” plastic surgery. Free Up Your Energy this Independence Day By Master Pun-Yin
M
ore people could live a joyous life, if they only realize the key is to know how to live the now, reflecting on the representation of what holidays, special occasions, and seasonal changes mean emotionally. Most people need to slow down to “feel it,” instead of just being busy “living it”. So during this July, when most people associate Independence Day with barbecues, gatherings, and activities, be an awakened person, choosing to ask yourself the question, “how free am I, and what is weighting me down?” The answer to this question for most people is almost always “because of someone or something, I can’t live the way I want to yet.” This answer is certainly understandable for the majority of the population around the world these days, with people being displaced by political systems, climate changes, health issues, and a host of other challenges. Yet lots of people experiencing the painful impacts have
64 • Resident July 2015
the courage to try to work around the challenges. So for those of us lucky enough to live in the free world, can we really blame anyone or anything for our not feeling the joy of life often enough? It is our own responsibility to convince ourselves to look at the glass half-full and believe that conviction—along with a dose of good karma—will lead us to a brighter day. This attitude has improved many people’s lives, which I’ve personally seen through my mentor/ father and his countless case studies. It is time we begin to detangle our bondage through better choices, living our lives using the authentic Feng Shui wisdom: Set aside time daily, or as often as possible between obligations, to reflect, feel, and find ways to modify the choices that drain you. Do this reflection within nature if there is too much distraction at home; sit anywhere that you can see a tree, a garden, or
the water. If you are at home, at least sit somewhere you can look out to these elements or at the sky. Do not do this reflection in your bedroom, as that puts the mind (Yang) energy there and disturbs the emotion (Yin) energy. In the bedroom, peaceful energy comes from minimal objects, electronic devices, and distractions. With the help of a classical Feng Shui expert, you can determine your core energy from your birth data as related to the Five Elements/Chinese Astrology Composition; the right timing, environment, and conditions can then be figured out strategically. Creating an environment that has the Five Elements and incorporates this information can be helpful to you, and can make you feel calm and objective, while leading you to a favorable outcome, filled with more optimism and better energy.

Hong Kong’s Timeless Fusion By Claire Gilbertsen
Looking down on the Hotel ICON

t’s hard to find a more diverse or cosmopolitan city than bustling Hong Kong. The gleaming skyscrapers and swanky shops have the feel of Manhattan, but the South Asian atmosphere is unmistakable. Long considered a vital global hub for commerce, the city has become a destination in it’s own right for unique and chic cultural experiences. Though it’s hard to keep up with the ever-evolving culture in Hong Kong, here are a few things to try to catch while there. While many visitors are attracted by the almost overwhelming opportunities to shop, the
allure of Hong Kong lies in finding excellence across the categories—luxury hotels with a sustainable edge, Michelin-rated restaurants and dining experiences, and it’s even becoming a destination in the art world, with Art Basel opening their latest outpost in Hong Kong in 2016.
boasting one of the largest indoor gardens in the world, in addition to other eco-initiatives. You will feel right at home in the modern and elegant rooms, and if you have a chance to stay in their top suite, curated by Vivienne Tam in the style of “China Chic,” there’s a chance
In a town well known for its towering skyscrapers and majestic skyline, there is no better place to stay than the luxurious Hotel ICON in Kowloon, with it’s impressive views of the city and the harbor. This sophisticated hotel fuses modern extravagance with sustainable design,
you may never want to leave. Between the inroom smartphone, the Angsana spa, and the state of the art fitness center with the heated pool, you may never have to. Their signature bar on the top floor, the aptly named Above & Beyond, offers delicious cocktails and dizzying panoramic views of the city, below which makes for a very happy hour. Dinner is also available at the Above & Beyond restaurant, which offers private dining rooms for parties and even a kitchen in which to bring a personal chef. Hotel ICON exudes excellence, not only

can’t find it or have it made in Hong Kong, it probably doesn’t exist. In SoHo, the luxury boutiques and high-end shops offer products exclusive to Hong Kong. Unique vintage shops and top-notch clothing stores line the neighborhood’s hip streets. For a more traditional cultural experience, head to Temple Street in central Kowloon, where a thriving night market begins just as the sun goes down. During the day, the Stanley Market is a classic open-air market, where bargaining with vendors is not just welcome, it’s an art. This market has everything from designer clothing and bags to antiques for the home and jade jewelry. It’s the perfect place to find a thoughtful souvenir, and chances are there will be at least one interesting story to go along with it.
because it is so perfectly run and flawlessly designed, but also because it is part of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s school for aspiring hoteliers. As a result, expect superior customer service. The staff is known for attention to detail and going above and beyond for guests. The hotel and amenities were built and designed with the comfort of the guests in mind. The Timeless room exists solely for guests who need to arrive early or late who may not have access to their room yet. Travelers who’ve been fortunate enough to experience the Icon’s superb hospitality have been more than a little impressed; the hotel was recently given TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice award in 2015. Hong Kong is not just a shopper’s paradise—although the retail experiences here would soon make a shopper out of anyone. No matter what you are looking for, if you
Another must-see district is Lan Kwai Fong, the party district. With over 100 bars, clubs, and restaurants, it is a true nightlife-lover’s paradise. For classic Cantonese Chinese food at its best, the Spring Moon restaurant in the classically decorated Peninsula hotel offers a premium dim sum experience. The restaurant is known for their XO sauce, made from a secret recipe, their crystal shrimp dumplings, and minced Wagyu beef as part of the dim sum offerings. Each dish is architecturally-presented, purely Cantonese, and almost too beautiful to eat. In early July, they will be offering a Culinary Masters Dinner, featuring six chefs from five different Peninsula properties who will create an eight-course tasting menu together. In the Mandarin Oriental’s Café Causette, the chefs work in a show-kitchen so diners get a glimpse into what goes on while they are making their food. This relaxing and light café is open all day and makes a great spot for lunch or for tea. After a day of shopping and sightseeing, or a night on the town, The Mandarin Burger or a classic croque monsieur, followed by a decadent passion fruit éclair, more than hit the spot. To feel on top of the world, literally, head to the Ozone Bar at the Ritz Carlton; located on the 118th floor of the highest building in Hong Kong, this must-see masterpiece is actually the highest known bar on the globe. The cocktails won’t dampen the feeling either. The bar was designed to feel like an extension of the sky with an otherworldly feel—more like a chic futuristic club. The Tin Lung Heen restaurant, also in the Ritz Carlton, boasts two Michelin stars and grand, impressive dining rooms—all with gorgeous views.
For a dash of historical culture, visit the oldest temple in Hong Kong, the Man Mo temple. Built in the 1800s in dedication to Taoist and Buddhist Inside, large coils of incense hang from the ceiling and as they burn, the smoke adds to the exotic but peaceful atmosphere. The temple is still used by many residents who pray to the god of literature and the god of war, for whom the temple was built.
A leisurely day trip to Lantau Island is worth taking to see a completely different side of Hong Kong. Between the lush mountains and the sapphire ocean, the scenery is breathtaking, and on top of the island sits a large bronze Buddha statue. For those not inclined to hike, a cable car system is also available. Finally, for something you can only find in Hong Kong, two words: Pink dolphins. Full day or half day boat trips are available
to seek out the rare pink dolphins in Hong Kong’s western waters, and make for a oncein-a-lifetime experience. With so much to see and do, Hong Kong is a top luxury destination not to be missed, and it just keeps getting better.

The Costa Rican Villa Life
C
osta Rica is one of the hottest tropical destination right now, and it’s no wonder—with swaths of untouched rainforest, it’s an exotic paradise unlike anywhere else— and a reasonable flight from New York City. Costa Rica has that rare undeveloped feel, and some of the most gorgeous beaches in the world are found in the Guanacaste province on the Pacific Ocean side of the country. Guanacaste culture is slightly different from other parts of Costa Rica because the region once belonged to Nicaragua. The landscape includes volcanoes, jungle, and ocean, and in the past ten years has seen an explosion in luxury accommodations. For a sophisticated and personal experience, the boutique hotel Villa Buena Onda provides a seamless and peaceful vacation experience unlike any other in the region. Only a short distance from the Liberia Airport (located in Guanacaste’s capital city), arriving at Villa Buena Onda feels like returning to your own private Costa Rican villa. At seven rooms in total, it very well could be, and guests are

guaranteed a personalized stay. From the moment you arrive, the staff will make you feel welcome and special. Highly attentive and caring, they seem to be able to intuit when to appear and when to make themselves scarce. Because it’s adults-only, many guests are couples seeking a romantic and quiet getaway. The ocean view rooms are spacious and have private balconies to enjoy the breezes and the stunning views. Every sunshine-filled room has clean and modern décor, and is equipped with plenty of modern amenities, including flat screen televisions, wifi, plush mattresses, and of course air conditioning. Guests at Villa Buena Onda find many ways to pamper and relax, including taking a dip
in the two-tiered outdoor pool (offering those same stunning views) or visiting the serene spa—a sanctuary that uses locally-produced products and is designed specifically with couples in mind. Of course, no private villa experience would be complete without your own chef. Part of the experience at Villa Buena Onda includes custom-made meals for guests (included
in your stay) based on personal preferences and what is fresh at the market. An additional perk is the complimentary Costa Rican cooking classes—a fun way to spend an afternoon or evening while getting a literal taste of the culture. There are a variety of other activities, and the staff is more than happy to suggest and arrange anything, from hiking volcanos to whale watching to exploring private white sand beaches. It seems each hike pleasantly leads to dreamy waterfalls. Before Guanacaste was developed, it was known as a secret surfer’s haven, and so naturally there are many opportunities to surf as well—even for novices. And of course, no trip to Costa Rica would be complete without the requisite ziplining trip (and mandatory photo!).
For the easiest and most bespoke Costa Rica vacation planning, book your travel through Costa Rican Vacations; they’re considered matchmakers for Central American travel, and can arrange for all transportation, logistics, and preferences, including helping with day trips and visits to other destinations, should you choose to go beyond Guanacaste.

There’s no pressure, though. The unbelievably gorgeous sunsets and picture-perfect beaches are entertainment enough for those who are ready to bliss out and relax during this magnificent getaway, and while exploring the area is encouraged, you’ll be just as happy returning to your villa for a sunset cocktail and some pampering.

Spa Hopping in Southwest Germany
T
he secret of the healing springs of Southwest Germany was first discovered as far back to 100 A.D. by the Roman Emperor Hadrian, who would travel to this region to ease his arthritic aches. The springs remained a secret among the privileged nobles and royalty and were first named Aquae, but later changed to Baden, German for baths, which are still intact and possess the same healing powers as they did nearly 2000 years ago—yet are now accessible for everyone. Perhaps the most famous town in the region is the breathtaking Baden-Baden, situated at the Northern foothills of the Black Forest, a place so nice they named it twice, as Bill Clinton once quipped. At the heart of the city is the five star Brennars Park-Hotel & Spa, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, which has long been a favorite haunt of international celebrities, politicians, and royalty. Set among a private English style park bordered by the babbling River Oos, this elegant and palatial hotel is a resplendent way to feel one with nature. Relax and rejuvenate in one of their luxurious superior rooms decorated in a classic yet exquisite country style, with ensuite balconies overlooking the lush park. For the more conservative, head to the 40,000 square foot Caracalla spa, named after the famous Roman spa with a variety of hot thermal spas indoors and outdoors along with steam and sauna rooms to unwind at your leisure. A short train ride away is the neighboring Wiesbaden, which was originally founded by the Romans, making it one of the oldest spa towns in Europe, with 14 flowing hot springs around town. This charming town has something for everyone—small wine bars, chic eateries, independent boutiques, art galleries, a casino, and of course a plethora of spas. Fairmont Chateau Laurier As Historical As It Is Elegant
L
ocated adjacent to the Canadian Parliament building, Ottawa’s Fairmont Chateau Laurier stands as a beacon of the design of the nation’s capital. With an edifice constructed out of limestone and turrets reminiscent of a French Chateau, the charm and stateliness attached to the historical structure enchants each guest that visits. When the hotel initially opened in June 1912, it had 306 guest rooms with an additional expansion in 1929 leading to the current tally of 429, including 33 luxury guest suites including its Presidential suites designed to look like a large one bedroom apartment.
Building Fairmont Chateau Laurier, named for Canada’s seventh Prime Minister Sr Wilfrid Laurier, in turn-of-the-century Ottawa began with the vision and foresight of Charles Melville Hays, an American who ventured to Canada as the General Manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway of Canada. Hays wanted to extend the Grand Trunk Railway to the West Coast and build several railway stations and deluxe hotels in all the major cities along the way. No expense was spared

to make the Château a truly luxurious hotel. Builders used granite blocks, white Italian marble, light buff Indiana limestone, and copper for the roof. The elegant Château was furnished with antiques, a travertine marble staircase with brass railing, Czechoslovakian crystal, and Sèvres vases. Since its opening, Fairmont Château Laurier has hosted a prestigious list of politicians, heads of state, royalty, and entertainers. The hotel has often been dubbed “the third chamber of Parliament” because of the politicians who regularly roam the corridors. Within its walls, political deals have been consummated, careers launched or destroyed, and governments created and dissolved. The hotel has been home to former Prime Ministers Richard Bedford (R.B.) Bennett and Pierre Trudeau. King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and her consort Prince Philip, Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, The King and Queen of Siam, and former U.S. President Hoover have all graced the hotel regis try. Though it is now closed, there is also an underground tunnel connecting the hotel to parliament.
The Fairmont Chateau Laurier’s Zoe’s Lounge, named after former Prime Minister Laurier’s wife, serves guests and Ottawa residents alike the perfect cup of tea, paired with delectable pastry treat. Served up by hostess Fabiola Olivares, its Traditional Afternoon Tea has always been a staple and remains popular, but Zoé’s also offers some variety in its tea menu with the Canadian Tea and Prince and Princess Tea. All menu offerings include the essential tradition of sweet strawberry jam, freshly baked scones, and smooth Devonshire cream to not loose the traditional feel. Guests can choose from over 15 gourmet loose teas and take pleasure in watching tea go from the canister to the teapot—tableside. This service style is unique in Ottawa to Fairmont Château Laurier and provides guests with a distinctive experience during Afternoon Tea. The professionally trained servers explain the distinctive taste and origins of the tea. By night, guests can enjoy delicious cocktails in the beautiful, historical space. trio Restaurant, located in the Conrad Hilton hotel in New York’s Financial District, is a rare commodity. Seldom do you find a restaurant celebrating the old and the new. Atrio’s approach to modern Mediterranean cuisine is simple: Take old world values and marry them together with fresh ingredients. Then, add a modern twist and you have an authentic experience with all the splendor and grandeur of a sophisticated dinner. Under the leadership of Chef Antonio Cardoso, Atrio invites its guests to enjoy a leisurely meal with Hudson River views complemented by a
sophisticated wine bar featuring an Enomatic System, allowing guests to enjoy fine wines by the glass. Cardoso brings his leadership and his culinary

expertise to the Conrad New York, with over 14 years experience in the industry. His diverse and extensive portfolio spans a variety of upscale hotel properties as well as sophisticated restaurants worldwide. Most recently, Cardoso lead the culinary team at the Ritz Carlton Abaco Club at Winding Bay in the Bahamas. His international culinary training from Portugal (where his grandmother’s influence took hold from a young age) and Paris enhance the eclectic style of the Conrad Hilton. The menu at Atrio reflects that eclectic sensibility. For their starters, you can’t go wrong with the grilled Portuguese Octopus or the fresh Burrata. The restaurant’s stone fired pizza is some of the best in the city, from the simple San Marzano Tomato pizza to the prosciutto and arugula pizza with truffle oil. Be sure to order at least one of their pizzas during your meal. For the main courses, the wild mushroom risotto and the Mediterranean paella were standouts. Although dinner here is the main event, Atrio is not just for an evening meal. Having a breakfast meeting downtown? Book a table and discuss business while enjoying ricotta pancakes, baked eggs,
or Belgian waffles. Their all-day menu offers a variety of flatbreads, roasted seasonal vegetables, unique meatballs, salads, artisanal cheeses, and cured meats, not to mention their “Bruffin” burger. Never heard of a “Bruffin?” It was all the craze at Smorgasburg in 2014. Think muffin meets brioche with international flavors thrown inside (feta or bacon, for instance). Add a juicy, grass-fed beef patty between the buttery, cheesy bread and you have heaven on earth in the form of a hamburger. Filling, yes? Worth every calorie…absolutely. I’ll definitely be back for more.

URBO Broadway’s Hottest New Hit By Molly Moffet

veryone likes dinner and a show, but Times Square’s hot new restaurant URBO takes this classic combo and adds chic and urban twists, while maintaining a spectacular menu. Located in the Theater District, URBO boasts a beautiful interior with two and a half levels, each with something different to offer. The first floor—URBO Kitchen—is a cavernous, decadent space polished with reclaimed wood, high ceilings, cement wall-coverings, and three open kitchens. The kitchens offer seasonal menus serving New York cultureinspired cuisine, and each station has an elemental theme: Earth specializes in locally and organically grown products, Water provides dishes prepared in water itself (poached or steamed), and Fire has a Beech Oven grill that adds a special smoky edge. The first floor is also home to a unique, in-house water filtration system with three different kinds of water for the restaurant. Built by Rosenwatch Tanks, one of New York’s two surviving manufacturers of traditional wooden tanks, it stands as a symbol of New York City. If you don’t want a full sit-down meal, but still wish to enjoy URBO’s enticing atmosphere, just visit URBO Grind, the restaurant’s in-house coffee shop. Stocked with Blue Bottle coffee for your

Take the cylindrical glass elevator or spiral staircase to the cocktail oasis, complete with a 35-foot-long bar and plush lounge area illuminated by theatrical, festoon lighting. But what truly sets Bar UBRO apart is the free musical

Independence Day Clothing I
By Carlos Lacayo
ndependence Day Clothing (ID) was conceived in love, but born out of frustration by mother of three, Lauren Thierry. Every morning she got up to help her son Liam, who lives with autism, get dressed. It was frustrating because Liam’s autism prevents him from using zippers, buttons, or laces, and gives him trouble differentiating a garment’s front from back. “We are talking about 30 minutes just to get on a pair of pants,” says Thierry, and “something had to change.” So Thierry designed a line of pre-teen and teen essentials, as a means of simplifying the process of getting dressed for Liam. From her charity work in the autism community, she knew thousands of other moms were facing the same frustration every morning. There had to be a marker for this. “I didn’t sign up for this,” says Thierry, “I was drafted.”
The Hampton Classic “My kids are grown and out of the house, I was riding my horse, decorating and looking for my ‘next act,’ and Lauren came up with this idea and suddenly my days aren’t my own any more, and it’s been fantastic,” proclaims co-founder and the aesthetic mastermind behind ID Clothing, Robin Sagon-Drews. Robin, a resident of Cutchogue and skilled equestrian, is currently gearing up for the Hampton Classic in August, but still finds time to help her best friend. “She’s my bestie and it’s such a joy working with her. I don’t really have to explain anything.” Lauren knew ID Clothing had legs when she produced a documentary titled “Autism Every Day.” “You really get a greater appreciation and empathy for what autism families are dealing with” says Robin.
Jonathan Drews and Andrea Shepherd in ID clothing
Niche Market Designing dresses, pants, tunics, and rugby shirts with no tags, buttons, or zippers was no easy task. Thierry created a simple, trendy style that boasts the ability to wear the shirts in reverse. Each piece includes a GPS tracker, which isn’t standard in the world of fashion, but is an addition that she hopes will save lives. “A lot of the options they had were, quite frankly, things you wouldn’t want to see your child dressed in,” she explains. “I am a mom, I am not a style maven. But even I was walking around saying, ‘Why are these kids having to dress like this?’” With special needs-tailored clothing becoming a niche market, Thierry says, “It’s about time.”

Currently ID Clothing is a 14-piece collection, but it will move up to a 21-piece line this fall. The collection is set to include skirts and other useful and attractive articles of kids’ clothing. Lauren hopes to grow the line further and bring attention to the brand while spreading the message of autism awareness in the hopes of changing people’s and family’s lives. Lauren says, “I know I’ve been thrown a curveball with having a son with autism, but life is good, really good, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Susan Shapiro NY’s Favorite Author and Literary Matchmaker By Pamela Jacobs
In Susan Shapiro’s acclaimed debut romantic comedy, Five Men Who Broke My Heart (Random House), she spilled all the sordid secrets of her former flames. But there was one story she could never tell—until now. This August, her latest novel, What’s Never Said (Heliotrope), divulges a previously hidden autobiographical tale of heartache set in her student days at NYU. Now a popular writing teacher herself at The New School and at her old alma mater, it seems she won’t rest until she’s also gotten every talented, aspiring writer in NY published as well. That’s how she ended up as the coauthor of her last book, the awardwinning Bosnia List (Penguin), a memoir about a 30-year-old Bosnian-born Muslim American who returns to his homeland after his family was forced to flee during the ethnic cleansing of the Yugoslavian war. Shapiro (a NY Jew who rarely ventures above 14th St.) was a patient of the Bosnian Muslim refugee-turned-Greenwich Village physical therapist, Kenan Trebincevic. During a PT session, she wouldn’t pay attention to the exercises, too busy grading her writing students’ papers. Trebincevic sarcastically asked, “What’s the assignment? What I did on my summer vacation?” Shapiro said, “No, my first assignment is to write about your most humiliating secret.” He laughed and said “You Americans, why would anybody do that?” She answered, “Because it’s healing and my students want to get into the New York Times and publish books.” Trebincevic wound up with a New York Times essay as a result. Then she offered him a deal: “You fix my back, I’ll fix your pages.” (Continued)

Designing Outside the Box Hot Hamptons Trends for Outdoor Living
T
V shows—such as those on HGTV— and countless home-design publications have created extreme interest in the beauty and functionality of outdoor entertaining spaces. Living outside the walls of one’s home is an especially large part of life in the Hamptons; designs often extend to the exterior, where relaxing and entertaining seamlessly integrate with the environment. Pembrooke Fine Landscapes has designed and created several outdoor living spaces for many of the finest homes in The Hamptons. Their design and build approach has successfully created fine outdoor living on properties from oceanfront estates to country farmhouses, and anything in between. Pembrooke’s design concepts always incorporate the natural beauty that surrounds Hamptons’ homes. One of the best ways to make use of the surrounding natural space and truly define it as an outdoor room—and a favorite of Pembrooke’s—is through a pergola. Pembrooke designs pergolas to emphasize the natural landscape, whether it’s overlooking the ocean in Sagaponack, the dunes of Montauk, a negative-edge pool in North Haven, or an old country barn in Amagansett. Handcrafted

By Nicole Castillo custom stone and patio work, correct elevation with a backdrop, ideal lighting, thoughtful design elements, exceptional furnishings, attractive and functional ceiling fans, customized entertainment integration, and carefully chosen plantings all allow the pergola to become a natural extension of the Hamptons home. Another element Pembrooke recommends working into the outdoor space is a finelycrafted and well-built custom stone fireplace. These outdoor fireplaces are often designed and built around the pool and spa area, patio, or pergola—blending in to create the ide-
al setting for memories of gathering around the fireplace, toasting marshmallows, and the indescribable feeling of sitting fireside and poolside on a gorgeous Hamptons summer evening. The proper design and installation of an outdoor kitchen is another essential component of luxurious outdoor living. Pembrooke works alongside the top-notch contractors that are required for the proper installation of an outdoor kitchen. Most signature outdoor kitchens include high-end grills, refrigerators, ice makers, a double sink, hot and cold running water, custom counter tops and storage areas, and stone work that integrates the cooking area with the scenery of the backyard, pool, and patio. Attention to detail and the special touches result in outdoor kitchens that are more enjoyable, more functional, and more attractive, largely because of the way they blend in effortlessly with the landscape. Whether it’s a pergola, a fireplace, or a kitchen, any addition to an outdoor living space will guarantee a beautiful summer in the Hamptons—and a home that’s sure to impress. An Easier Life? Concierge Service There’s AnNew AppYork ForLife That Makes Your EZBZ By Peter Elston
Manhattan woman has returned to her glamorous Upper East Side townhouse after a night out on the town to find that her air conditioner is broken and the fluid is all over her floor. What is she supposed to do? She can reach out to companies via Google, but all that leads her to is the voicemail boxes of various businesses’, and consulting the Yellow Pages leads to similar results. However there’s one free concierge service that will save the day—myEZBZ. The innovative social platform myEZBZ connects consumers with businesses directly in real-time to satisfy requests for anything from personal projects to home repairs, like this woman’s broken air conditioner. myEZBZ enables people like this woman to quickly file a request with photos and a description, completely free of charge. Once she’s submitted said request, all businesses that can do air conditioner repairs within the vicinity of her Upper East Side abode will receive an email with 122 • Resident July 2015
her request and all photos. This enables businesses to swiftly make a best-possible cost estimate of the repair job, which allows her to decide which service provider best suits her needs and then proceed with the transaction almost instantaneously. Each business within the platform is vetted through myEZBZ’s patent pending technology, ensuring that each one that receives an inquiry for services by one of the platform’s users is legitimate. Founded in 2011 by CEO Shana Schlossberg, myEZBZ was set up with the mission of connecting small businesses with the consumer on a fair market platform. Through her personal experiences in the telecom industry, she learned that people pay top dollar to be amongst the first listed in the Yellow Pages, because research suggests people will often ignore any listed after the fourth business under any particular subcategory. This means that businesses with more capital behind them might get listed above those which have the best reputation. To combat
this, myEZBZ prides itself on not utilizing “pay for play” measures like a top Google or Yelp search result, meaning that every business has an equal opportunity to provide services. Instead, myEZBZ awards badges to contractors and businesses based on their practices and the overall customer experience. So the small mom and pop businesses have the same opportunities as a massive corporate-run business with access to capital for boosted search results and an SEO team. With all the steps myEZBZ takes to ensure consumer-business satisfaction, it is almost guaranteed this Manhattan woman will get optimal care and utilize this platform for other services, like finding a dog walker, personal chef, a cleaning service or a personal trainer. Download the free application in the App Store or on Google Play. For more information: myezbz.com

HAPPY HOUR What and Where to Sip this Season Picture this: It’s finally Friday and you’re on your way out to the Hamptons for the weekend. Once you’ve battled the traffic and survived the crowds at the grocery store, it’s finally time to start the weekend off right—with you favorite group of people, and a much-needed cocktail. Check out our picks for summer’s hottest cocktails, and where in the Hamptons they’re being poured.
If wine bars are your preferred sipping spot, then the wine-centric bar at Fresno in East Hampton is the place for you. But staying with our cocktail theme, we recommend The Upside Down Martini, offering the best of both worlds, with Channing Daughter’s VerVino Vermouth and Farmer’s organic gin.
Stick with the tropical island vibe at LITTLE|RED in Southampton, and enjoy the Red Rum Punch, made up of Blue Chair Banana Rum, Clement Coconut Liqueur, orange, pineapple, lemon, and lime. If you’re lucky, you may be able to snag a seat al fresco on the garden patio.
At The Beacon in Sag Harbor, the staff believes that the hardest decision you make all day should be the drink you’re going to order. While that may be wishful thinking, we’re going to make that one decision even easier: Go for the Ruby Rita, a blood orange margarita with Sauza Gold.
Seasoned Hamptonites who love their seafood know to head to Bostwick’s Chowder House. But did you know creative concoctions are also part of the mix? Get excited for the Watermelon Margarita, featuring watermelon infusion with Milagro Premium Silver Tequila, triple sec, fresh lime juice, and a splash of simple syrup.
Indian Wells Tavern in Amagansett is also on the watermelon bandwagon this summer; the pubstyle tavern is rolling out a Watermelon Sangria with Wolffer rosé, fresh watermelon, Cointreau, and a splash of vodka that will leave you feeling quenched and ready for the weekend.
Settle down in the garden at the Backyard Restaurant at Sole East in Montauk. What to sip, you ask? The signature Myles of course, made with Cruzan Silver Rum, peach, strawberries, mint, and lime.
If you like BBQ, your best bet is Townline BBQ in Sagaponack. Some pulled pork paired with Texas Tea on tap will have you screaming “yee-haw.” Townline’s Texas Tea is a combination of Old Overholt rye whiskey, passion fruit, peppermint tea, fresh lemon juice, and organic agave nectar, and is just what the doctor ordered.
Cheers to lounging and libations all summer long! 136 • Resident July 2015
Head on down to 668 The Gig Shack in Montauk, and ask for the Shack Signature Margarita made with Herradura Silver, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, a splash of OJ, and a splash of bubble water.
