harlize Theron gets tough in Mad Max: “I’m 50/50 on glamour stuff. I’d rather put on a pair of jeans and get on my Harley and act like a guy.” Her co-star, Tom Hardy, says, “I learned Latin at the age of nine and certain expectations were made of me to go to Oxbridge, and I failed to meet the mark. Who I am and what I should have been are two very different things.”

Pitch Perfect 2 made more money in one weekend than the original did in its entire box office run. Starlet Anna Kendrick says, “The really humbling moment is when you get home from the Golden Globes or the Oscars, and you sit on your bed, which is the same crappy IKEA bed you’ve had since you were 18, you put on an old episode of Family Guy, and you have a frozen meal, trying not to get macaroni and cheese on your thousanddollar gown.” Co-star Rebel Wilson confesses, “My family keeps me pretty grounded. Like if I try anything diva, they’re like, ‘Oh shut up. Go and do the dishwasher.’” Golden-voiced Brittany Snow admits to her fashion faux pas, “I’ve worn my share of leopard pink boots to premieres or belts the size of cars. I thought my pink leopard boots were so cool.” The Women’s Committee of the Central Park Conservancy hosted the 33rd annual Frederick Law Olmstead Hat Luncheon and raised $3.5 million to preserve and protect our park. fter being told that his girlfriend, Celebrity Chef Sandra Lee, had been diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo a double mastectomy, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo released the following statement: “A few weeks ago we received terrible news. Sandy shared with me that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was devastated. After the news what followed was a blizzard of doctors’ visits, tests, and discussions of treatment options. Sandy is young for her diagnosis, she has no family history, she is healthy, and had no symptoms or signals that she was in danger. She has been diligent about going for check-ups, and thankfully this was detected in the early stages. A situation like this quickly puts life in the proper perspective and reminds one of what’s truly important. To that end, I expect to take some personal time because I want to be with Sandy to support

Ramona earned a lot of the money and he’s going after it.” Sources claim that Mario is also going after the Southampton home that is now up for lease, and the Manhattan apartment the couple owned while they were still together. tabloid television pioneer, Geraldo Rivera, dropped $5.6 million on a three-unit combination condo at the top of a building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The apartment has three to four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The posh pad is a stone’s throw from Central Park, and has a monthly maintenance fee of $5,399. It also comes with four parking spaces in the on-site garage, a fully-staffed lobby, a wrap-around roof-top terrace, indoor pool, health club, party room, and children’s play room. Everyone raved about the evening gowns that Beyonce, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, and Jennifer Lopez wore to last month’s Met Gala. However, Miami Heat player Dwayne Wade won the award for the evening’s most expensive ensemble. Sources say the NBA superstar’s Versace outfit and Buccellati jewelry set him back a whopping $270,000. No word on what his wife, Gabrielle Union’s purple Zac Posen gown cost. The “Being Mary Jane” star changed into a black halter dress for Rihanna’s after-party at the Up and Down Club.

Giving Back: The Boys & Girls Club of Bellport Area’s 12th Annual Beach Ball By Nathaniel Goehring

A

lexandra Lebenthal, who was dubbed “The Queen of Wall Street” by Fortune Magazine, and her husband Jay Diamond are the honorary chairs and hosts of the Boys & Girls Club of the Bellport Area’s 12th Annual Beach Ball. The party will be held at their waterfront home in Bellport on Saturday June 20th.

The star-studded host committee includes Isabella Rossellini; fashion designer Dana Buchman; Amanda Burden, former director of the New York City Department of City Planning; Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein; Lucy Danziger, magazine editor and author; Bob Morris, writer and freelance journalist for New York Times; and Keith Pollock, Editor-in-Chief at Interview Magazine. Other supporters of the organization include Chuck Scarborough and Charlie Rose, who was 2014’s Master of Ceremonies. This year the fete is themed “The Art of Summer,” and will kick off the season on the Great South Bay. The evening will feature both live and silent auctions, dinner, drinks, and dancing. The night will climax with a pyrotechnic show from Fireworks by Grucci, a sixth-generation Bellport family business that set the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Fireworks Display” ever recorded, when they released 479,651 fireworks on New Year’s Eve Dubai in 2013. Auction items will include jewelry, fashion, home accessories, and artwork from an array of prestigious galleries. Past auction items have included work from photographer Harry Benson and pieces from Cheim & Read, as well as the Danziger Gallery. “Beach Ball is a tremendous undertaking,” says Danielle Perillo, the Club’s Resource Development Director and one of the event’s primary architects. “As soon as June 21 comes we’re already thinking about ideas for next year.” In 2014, Beach Ball raised upwards of $300,000 and it typically brings in an amount worth almost one-quarter of the Club’s annual operating expenses. This nonprofit association serves over 700 underprivileged young people in Bellport, and relies on fundraising to maintain its vital-

ity. In 2012, Perillo took charge writing grant requests and soliciting contributions from local groups and individuals. In addition to Beach Ball, Perillo coordinates other Club events, including March’s Casino Night, and a 5K Race and Day for Kids in September. Perillo also took on the task of managing the Club’s ongoing $5 million endowment campaign, where one of her goals is to encourage donors to regularly contribute, beyond the much-needed donations received at their Beach Ball. The Club’s mission is to inspire and enable

all young people in the Bellport Area and the South Shore. In 2012, they completed a 28,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility in North Bellport which includes teen and junior game rooms, learning centers, and other facilities. Historically, the North Bellport neighborhood is a high-need area that has suffered chronic indications of community disorganization, poverty, crime, drug abuse, gang violence, academic failure, and high dropout rates. Mixed Chicks Mixes It Up For Men

he authenticity of the Mixed Chicks brand is evident in the creators of the brand, Wendi Levy and Kim Etheredge. It’s evident in the effectiveness of the products, and in speaking with Brad Kaaya Sr., co-founder/creative officer for Mixed Chicks. Kaaya recently shared info with the Resident about Mixed Chicks line for men: His Mix. Says Kaaya: Men and their hair don’t get the attention and volume of product choice that women enjoy, but that doesn’t mean guys aren’t trying to make hair look its best. As a young man trying to figure out ways to tame my curls, I—like many guys—turned to women for advice. Now, with His Mix, developed here at Mixed Chicks, men have a full line that can cleanse, tame, define, and hold many hair textures. If you have straight hair and want a firm textured hold, or you want to go curly with a soft-styled hold, or anything in between, His Mix has arrived. The inception of His Mix and the Mixed Chicks Company?

For years, multicultural people with hard-tomanage hair traveled from store to store, trying to blend products in a hopeless attempt to tame their locks. Wendi Levy and Kim Etheredge, two “mixed chicks,” created the Mixed Chicks product line because they needed it personally.

38 • Resident June 2015

Then, something happened. Friends and family started encouraging them to package it, and soon they had a full blown business running out of the garage. Looking at our warehouses now, filled with product, it is hard to believe, but the beginning was very humble. In fact, we functioned out of our garage years ago. With the success of the Mixed Chicks brand, His Mix was a logical step. There were a lot of guys who used the Mixed Chicks line, and many of them asked for “something with a more masculine package.” How guys can benefit from using His Mix?

We could talk about how functional and cool our packaging is, or how poignant and pertinent to today’s multicultural market our message is, but all of that is secondary to this fact: Like the Mixed Chicks products, His Mix products perform. At the end of the day, we only make money if our customers like the results. His Mix will cleanse, detangle, and control many hair types. Our leave-in conditioner, for instance, gives someone with large curls or waves a soft-styled hold. On the other end of the spectrum, our gel offers a firm hold; and the best thing: The gel, like our conditioners, works on straight hair, but also perform on very tight curls. What products are in the His Mix line and what do they do?

There are four products: 1. His Mix Clarifying Shampoo • Clarifying formula removes build-up • Step one toward shiny, healthy hair 2. His Mix Daily Conditioner • Softens • Moisturizes • Promotes Healthy Hair 3. His Mix Leave-in Conditioner • Works on many hair textures and perms • Gives a soft-styled hold • Fights frizz 4. His Mix Firm Hold Gel • Styles & Shines • Adds Texture • Blocks frizz The His Mix line has 4 SKU’s now, but look for that to expand over the years. Guys, if you have suggestion, we are all ears! Taste Asia Food Festival: Times Square, June 26th & 27th

N

ow a culinary superpower, Asian food is one of the most popular and sought after cuisines in the world. Bringing together all the diverse styles and flavors that encompass the fare of the Far East, the Taste Asia Food Fest comes back to Times Square with some of the world’s best Asian chefs in tow on June 26th and 27th. “Taste Asia came out of an effort by the Chinese community in the U.S. to discover authentic Chinese culture in the form of food,” says Jan Jekielek, the co-curator with Channaly Philipp of Taste Asia. “They realized that the full spectrum of Asian food is very exciting to the mainstream American audience.” Taste Asia originally started when the inaugural International Chinese Culinary Competition was held in a small Chinese restaurant on Park Avenue in 1998. Over seven years, nearly 500 chefs from 12 nations have competed in the International Chinese Culinary Competition. The month-long celebration starting on June 1st will lead up to a free two-day foodie extravaganza in Times Square. The fest will feature the expertise of over ten culinary masters, including Michelin-starred chefs David Bouley, Hemant Mathur and Joe Isidori, Japanese Iron Chef Yuji Wa-

kiya and Food Network’s World Extreme Chef Terry French. “The first day are cooking demos, which are very audience friendly,” Jekielek explains. “The second day is more serious. It’s about finding the best Chinese chef in the world.” The chefs fire up their woks and battle it out in Taste Asia’s outdoor kitchens. Festivalgoers can also cast their vote for the inaugural Best NYC Asian Restaurants contest, giving New Yorkers the chance to weigh-in on their favorite Asian eateries around the city. With the ability to vote across dozens of different categories, there will be various opportunities to help highlight a favorite dining destination before voting closes on June 20th.

“We worked very hard to get a very broad representative group of chefs,” said Jekielek. “We’ve got Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Indian, as well as a number of chefs working on Asian-inspired fare.” Taste Asia also offers tastings from local restaurants and exciting live cultural demonstrations, including a special Dumpling Making & Eating Contest hosted by Cathy Erway, celebrated author of The Food of Taiwan and The Art of Eating In. To close the festival, a ticketed luncheon and VIP banquet will be held on June 28th at the James Beard House—the lunch highlighting authentic Indian fare from chefs Hemant Mathur and Surbhi Sahni, and the dinner showcasing traditional Chinese dishes from Chef Zizhao Luo, winner of the 2011 International Chinese Culinary Competition. “This festival is the perfect way to bring the tastes and traditions of Asia to New Yorkers and visitors from around the world,” Jekielek concludes. “Times Square is the ultimate backdrop for this foodie festival as we are bringing visitors from all walks of life together to celebrate great food and Asian culture.” For more information: tasteasia.org

Objections Overruled

Court is in session with Legal powerhouse, Brian Glasser By Rory Winston S

ee you in court,” I heard myself yelling, the hackneyed phrase tumbling from my mouth without practical purpose. Admittedly, my minor altercation hadn’t warranted litigation but there it was—the words rolling off my tongue like the recurring hook to a hit song. See you in court. So gratifying to invoke the world of law in

42 • Resident June 2015

daily vernacular.

Was I being hyperbolic? “So sue me,” I thought to myself, delighting in the inherent potency of yet another courtroom simile. In the precedent law-based society in which we live—where law itself is a constantly evolving if amorphous creature—legal

language has the power of an incantation; it is a prayer in a foreign tongue, an integral part of a passed on tradition in which only the initiated can help save souls. The select few mortals who are skilled in such rites are mysterious beings, intermediaries to the gods capable of altering our destiny: lawyers.

might be less involved in a Scopes Monkey trial than in a savings and loans scandal or taking down the likes of Bernie Madoff, there is little doubt that the idea of the sophisticated country lawyer who is capable of leaving his mark on the nation still exists. Case in point: Brian A. Glasser. As John Grisham wrote, “It takes just one…One big case.” For Glasser, that one big case came in the form of the renowned Yellowstone Mountain Club fraud case in Montana, where Glasser obtained a $41 million verdict against property developer and former owner, Tim Blixseth. With a smile warm enough to momentarily distract one from his piercing gaze, Glasser enters the room, taking in the situation while acknowledging that the interview will be on the record. As a partner in the now highly prestigious law-firm Bailey & Glasser LLP, Brian begins his introduction by talking less about himself than the company he represents.

Opening Statement “We have 44 attorneys, 90 employees in our firm. And my partner [Benjamin L. Bailey] is a first-tier lawyer who, like myself, simply loves being in a courtroom. Brilliant litigator; just owns the experts. He was one of the lead counsel on the Toyota Sudden Acceleration case that ended in getting a $1.6 billion settlement. Anyway, he spent eight years in public service, two as a federal prosecutor and four as Counsel to the Governor of West Virginia. In 1999, he and I formed Bailey & Glasser LLP. Since then we’ve been trying cases and growing. “Mostly we concentrate on complex commercial cases, plaintiff or defense. Our typical client is a wealthy entrepreneur with a serious problem.”

Whether the punchline of a joke or an answer to a Jewish mother’s prayers, the word lawyer itself elicits a strong emotional response. It evokes myriad artistic renderings and a variety of archetypes. From the ambulance-chasing attorney (Paul Newman) in The Verdict to the well-meaning shyster (Bob Odenkirk) in Better Call Saul, to the homespun philosopher Matlock and the aphoristic “Hang together and you’ll hang separately” classic Perry Mason, lawyers are either a reminder of the perpetual rift that exists between legality and morality, or they represent our best hopes for bridging that gap. Though a contemporary Clarence Darrow

Although Glasser is from a prominent Jewish family that probably has as much to do with an authentic West Virginian mindset as Tony Kushner’s family has to do with Louisiana (where the playwright’s family relocated during his formative years), when queried about his background, Glasser doesn’t hesitate to admitting to his West Virginian roots: “That’s right, West Virginia; I even went to West Virginia University. It’s where I finished. Of course, I was lucky enough to get a Rhodes Scholarship, which allowed for me to attend Oxford for three years. It was there that I studied economics and politics. From Oxford, it was straight to Harvard Law. You could say I spent my formative years in West Virginia and my reformative ones at Oxford and…” Glasser trails off, giving way to a smile as he notices me laughing.

Cross-examination Like a witness being cross-examined by some unseen attorney, Glasser pivots in his chair, lurches forward, and recounts “I went back to West Virginia after I finished school. It was there I started my own law firm with Ben and we started to focus basically on what you’d call ‘deals gone bad.’” “By deals gone bad, I mean commercial disputes,” clarifies Glasser, in a way that makes me envision a judge asking him to be more specific. “Generally it was in the energy industry: coal, oil, gas, or timber deals…Because those are the types of deals that typically go bad in West Virginia.” Then, by way of a character testimony, “Nowadays I live in Georgetown, D.C. with my wife and kids, but the part that’s remained the same is the focus on deals heading south, even if our company has steadily been heading northeast.” The compass set, it took Bailey & Glasser LLP no more than a few years to hit New York; and when they did, they couldn’t have made a more dynamic entrance. “Right, you mean the Refco bankruptcy…yeah, that was a big case,” confirms Glasser. In truth, prior to the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy subsequent scandal, the Refco case was one of largest Ponzi schemes of all time. Fake bonds; the CEO Phillip Bennet successfully hiding his debts by issuing himself loans to temporarily cover the losses. “Bennet ended up going to prison together with some other people from the group,” Glasser reaffirms. Recounting the events with the accuracy of an affidavit, Glasser continues, “The law firms Milbank and Quinn were having conflicts on one or another aspect of the case, and our firm competed for handling certain functions and won the job on a strictly competitive basis.” By way of explanation, Glasser states, “It was our first nationwide exposure, our first case of real import, and working for a prominent bankruptcy trustee named Marc Kirshner, we got noticed after doing an excellent job. So we parleyed that into a lot more similar work—deals gone sour. All this in the early 2000’s.”

Corroborating Evidence Glasser takes a slight pause, less for effect than for quick mental review. Then, after clearing his throat, he reboots and proclaims: “It was then that I became lead counsel in the case that would garner the most publicity for our firm, the Yellowstone Mountain Club fraud case in Montana,

where we obtained a $41 million verdict against property developer and former CEO, Tim Blixseth.” That the renowned case was featured in Forbes and made the global news circuit was clearly gratifying, in the sense that Blixseth was subsequently judged to owe over $200 million and later found in contempt and fined an additional $13 million. “Since then,” explains Glasser, “we’ve been trying to figure out where he’s stashed the money and run him to ground. I mean, this is the guy who emptied out the coffers of the private resort club, and a lot of it still has to be out there somewhere.”

A Bill of Particulars Besides these headline-grabbing cases, Glasser has a most impressive list when it comes to protecting the personal and business interests of high-profile billionaires, such as Christopher Burch of Tory Burch, or Chris Cline. “Locally, my most high profile case was the Chris Burch divorce. It wasn’t a lengthy assignment, but it was a really interesting one because I got to look after Chris Burch’s interests on the board of

Tory Burch until it was all solved. Successfully for both parties, I might add.” Recently, for Chris Cline, Glasser helped take down an extortionist who had threatened to kill members of the family. That assignment also garnered nationwide press, mainly because the extortionist had also threatened the family of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. When asked what he’s been up to lately, Glasser nonchalantly reveals, “Well, most recently I just won a $20 million verdict in a fight between two government contractors over the split up of their business in front of Judge Pauley here in Manhattan [William H. Pauley III, Southern district judge], who’s pretty well known through the NSA case because he was just in the news with the ‘collection of data’ issue. Anyway, it was a fun case.”

Due Diligence “We’ve done lots of work with debt fund and hedge fund owners and with those who had issues that are a little more esoteric and personal, but still involve lots of money,” admits Glasser, after being asked what kind of work they’ve recently pursued in New York. “You have to un-

derstand our typical client—well, typical, so who’s typical, right? Nevertheless, I’d say our typical client is an entrepreneur, an individual, a self-made man—someone who’s probably already got a slew of lawyers working for his company, but then he’s got one or two matters that, well, let’s just say, they demand the kind of special attention we can give to things.” “We’re in New York a lot. We have an office in Rye and in New York most of our work is negotiations and trials. This city’s got excellent courts, excellent lawyers…the best practitioners, really, which makes it challenging, and since our niche is ‘deals gone bad,’ well, I’m kind of confident New York has plenty of those as well,” says Glasser, with a smirk that soon gives way to a beaming smile whose confidence is bound to both “please the court” and overrule any objections anyone may have had to yet another lawyer making a name in the big apple. Walking from the meeting, all I can think is: On behalf of this city, the Resident finds in favor of Bailey & Glasser.

Sphatika: A Journey of Luxury for the Senses

I

n a city in which the very best of everything exists—from art and culture to food and fashion—it’s hard to stand out. New Yorkers are critical for good reason; we know and have the best.

So when I paid a recent visit to Sphatika, a luxurious spa on Madison Avenue, my first question, naturally, was “what makes this place different from the countless other high-end spas in the city?” The answer, I soon found out, was “everything.”

By Pamela Jacobs

After all, she doesn’t want you to just look nice or enjoy your time there in the simple sense; Ms. Katzin truly wants you to receive the full benefits of a holistic approach to wellness, and to achieve restoration and detoxification through the process. She wants you to enjoy the beauty she’s created in the space (and it is quite beautiful) while benefiting from her years of experience—her “journey to wellness” that began as an experiment with alternative treatments and holistic life-approaches, and culminated in her masterpiece, Sphatika. If your own journey at Sphatika includes the Sphatika Signature Experience—as did mine—then you’ll begin with a personal sauna, enveloped in warmth, where you sweat out 80% water and 20% toxins (roughly 18% more than a traditional sauna).

The location is as good as it gets: Sphatika sits just above street-level on Madison Ave., across from Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino, and on top of Jill Sander—yet it might as well be miles from Earth, where the material world doesn’t exist, and it’s just you and your senses. While certainly a haven for the well-heeled—a place where the hardest-to-impress feel right at home—Sphatika isn’t about being excessive or hip. It goes below the surface, to truly reach all of your senses and restore your innerbeing, both physically and mentally, and leave you feeling as if your body and mind have experienced something special. In fact, when your treatment is over and you’re escorted into the Crystal Sanctuary (no ordinary relaxationroom) and invited to spend time on lounge chairs draped in the softest fabric imaginable, you’re not just doing it to relax; you’re there to transition, to “assimilate and absorb what you’ve received,” before returning to the outside world, in the words of Sphatika’s founder/ owner, Janet League-Katzin.

46 • Resident June 2015

From there, you’ll enter a tranquil, soothing treatment room and embark on an almost one-and-a-half-hour journey that focuses on detoxifying the lymphatic system and soothing the central nervous system—and feels utterly, wonderfully blissful. Indeed, from the gentleyet-stimulating skin brushing to the heavenly lymphatic drainage massage followed by a body mask and hydrating steam canopy, my body was spoiled during every second of the experience. And while my body underwent said spoiling, my face was treated to a truly unique facial, that hours later still resulted in multiple exclamations of, “you’re glowing!” If there’s anything that can actually, truthfully remove the stress that occurs from life in this city, the Signature Experience can and does. It was this sense of peace—this unprecedented relaxation—that I contemplated as I lay on the aforementioned heavenly lounge chair, sipping lemon water, back in the Crystal Sanctuary. As I gazed around at the bouldersized crystals that, when catching the sunlight streaming in from the oversized arched windows, create a mid-air rainbow, I felt the “sweet energy” of those crystals—Ms. Katzin’s perfect description of them, and the reason they’re everywhere within the Sphatika space, including inside the walls. While luxury is nothing new on Madison Ave., the version of it at Sphatika is unique and oneof-a-kind. Sure, there are glistening golden chandeliers and baseball-sized fresh roses, the award-winning 100% natural Sphatika Skincare line, and pre-war architectural details,

but the luxury goes beyond that. It lies more in the sense of wellbeing and peace, healing and positive energy that embodies everything they do at Sphatika. Whether you book the Signature Experience, a Goddess Ambrosia Facial, an Age-Defying Micro-Current Facial, or any number of face and body treatments, you’ll sense this. It’s about leaving there looking great but feeling even better; isn’t that what true luxury is all about? Sphatika

Tea Time with Dr. Lara Devgan W

e recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Lara Devgan—plastic surgeon extraordinaire, published author, and creator of a highly-anticipated medical-grade skin care line—over afternoon tea at the iconic Carlyle Hotel. Here, between sips of Earl Grey, Dr. Devgan talked all things beauty, from Botox to breast implants to BB cream. You are known as a top female plastic surgeon in Manhattan. Does that mean most of your patients are women too?

I would say that about 85% of my patients are women and 15% are men. I love helping other women, especially with sensitive topics like plastic surgery, but I really think that my patients choose me based on credentials and skills, rather than gender. Yale, Hopkins Medical School, Columbia Presbyterian plastic surgery residency... Your credentials do seem to speak for themselves.

Thank you. What are the big procedures these days? What’s popular?

Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery in America, and in my practice as well. I also love delicate facial surgery, like rhinoplasty, eye lift, and facelift. Those procedures have been popular for years, and they are fun to perform because they require real finesse and artistry. Are there any new trends in plastic surgery?

One thing that I’m really excited about is Collagen Induction Therapy, which is also called Dermapen Microneedling. It is like the ultimate medical-grade facial. With that and Botox (which is also incredibly popular in my practice), you can put off surgery for ages. Tell us about your new skin care line.

I created the line that I’ve always wanted—a luxury line of science-based products that actually work. And I named it after myself too! [Dr. Devgan Scientific Beauty] The signature product in my line, Platinum Triple Glow, is actually prescription strength and can’t be sold over the counter. But it’s amazing—retinoic acid, hydroquinone, hydrocortisone, and vitamin E— all the good stuff. It will make your skin glowy and gorgeous. With that, plus my Platinum Vitamin C+ luminous night serum and Platinum SPF 45 tinted BB cream, you basically have all you need in just three products.

Well, I actually love the Carlyle, as a matter of fact. This is where my husband and I first celebrated our engagement. I love taking my three sons to Central Park, the Met, and Via Quadronno for ice cream cones. Cafe Boulud is great—that is where we go for our special occasions. And I happen to live and work a few blocks away, so I love those places the best of all. Dr. Lara Devgan, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. 121A East 83rd Street. New York, NY 10028. Healthier, Happier Living Glen Tobias Proves Diet is Not a Dirty Word W

By Pamela Jacobs

hen you’re responsible for the health and wellbeing of countless private patients, elementary school kids, and athletes throughout Manhattan, Connecticut, and New Jersey, you’re kept more than a little busy. Add the diet and nutritional needs of the New York Jets into the mix, and it’s amazing Glen Tobias finds any time to sleep. As a registered dietitian with an extensive educational and professional background in the field, Tobias is highly sought-

after—hence the busy schedule. As one who is truly passionate about the work, and about educating people in the process, it’s no wonder he’s become the go-to good-health-guy. Tobias’ interest in nutrition began at a young age; as the son of a chef, the importance of food was instilled early. He went on to study pre-med at Rutgers. But after an elective course in nutrition, he changed direction and decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition at NYU, after which a specialty in sports soon followed. The natural progression led to Tobias founding the e3 Weight Management System, following countless years with clients, leading them away from the misguidance of the Internet and toward knowledge and facts. On the program and its structure, Tobias says “It’s eating, it’s exercising, and it’s education.” It sounds simple, of course—and feels that way—but it’s backed by a 20+ year career and an incomparable reputation in the industry. This reputation has been noticed by more than a few people over the years. For instance, the father of a patient who, as it turned out, was an esteemed spinal surgeon, and upon meeting Tobias, asked him to join his team. The result was Tobias’ partnership with Manhattan Sports Medicine and the Spinal Care Institute at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Then there’s his work as nutritionist for the Yale athletic department, his assistance with MMA fighters, and the NFL. On his past (and ongoing) three years with the NY Jets, Tobias says, “There are only 32 football teams in the country, so being one of 32 of anything is pretty cool.” Whether he’s making the world’s best athletes better, speaking at the Athletic Trainers’ Society of New Jersey’s annual conference, or helping a mother bring better health to her children, Tobias’ main goal is to make healthful living more understandable, accessible, and personal. He designs meal plans based on individual needs and ends the all-too-common cycle of diet fatigue and failure. More than giving people a sense of direction and imparting in them a healthy approach to eating, Tobias provides his clients with a better quality of life. He calls himself “lucky,” getting to do this every day—but it seems as if the truly lucky ones are those whose life has been changed because of him. For more information: glentobiasrd.com

The Art of Botox A

By Rafael G. Magana, MD Plastic Surgeon

ging is inevitable; but of the many tools in the armamentarium of a plastic surgeon to rejuvenate and improve one’s appearance, the most utilized, by far, is Botox (onabotulinumtoxin A). Botox is a natural solution (biologically derived) for mild to moderate wrinkles on the forehead, frown lines, and the all too common “crow’s feet” around the eyes. Although Botox has analogs with similar effects, it is the oldest and most studied one of them. Botox acts by interfering with the nerve/muscle connection, therefore reducing tonicity of the muscle it is injected into. As the muscle stops contracting, the overlying skin reflects the effect by reducing the universal stigma of aging: wrinkles. Botox is safe when applied by a knowledgeable professional. It is FDA approved for the aforementioned areas, and is quite effective when the appropriate amount is injected. The

muscles of the forehead and those around the eyes are distinct and have opposing forces when they contract. It can be applied not only to remove wrinkles temporarily, but if used selectively in different muscles at the correct doses, you can actually change the general expression of the eyes.

enhance lips, as well as to elevate depressed scars, flattening them and making them less noticeable. Fillers can also be used in the mid portion of the face to give a rejuvenating appearance by elevating the cheek bones, which is one of the hallmarks of a youthful face.

When applied artistically, it can simultaneously reduce the “crow’s feet” and change the angle of the brow to the raised position— generally considered more attractive—due to the change in counteracting forces between muscles. The effects of Botox last approximately 4 months.

Weather it is Botox, fillers, or a surgical approach you are seeking in order to rejuvenate your appearance, I recommend that you always do your research and find a “core trained” Plastic Surgeon who has experience with the procedure you would like to have done.

Alternatives to Botox include Dysport and Xeomin—also effective agents to reduce wrinkles. Patients often ask the difference between Botox and “fillers”. Botox merely relaxes the muscle to reduce superficial wrinkles; fillers are used to flatten deeper valleys that are considered “larger wrinkles”, such as Nasolabial folds. Fillers are also used to

Is Your Smile Summer-Ready? I

t seems the winter is finally gone, and the hot, sunny days are here to stay. As the days get warmer, we have a revelation: Bathing suit season is coming! It’s time to buckle down and get ourselves ready for a full reveal. While we expose our bodies to the world for the four months of summer, our smiles are exposed for the entire year. So when you are going in for those small nips and tucks, spray tans, and sun-kissed highlights, don’t forget about your smile. One trick of the trade that will make your smile stand out is bright white teeth. When you have a nice tan, you will notice your teeth will appear even brighter. Bright reds and pinks on your lips will also deceive the eye into thinking the teeth are whiter than they

are. But what happens when you come out of the pool and the reds have washed away? Whitening is one of my favorite procedures because the results—with the right products— can be dramatic. The procedure is easy, so even the most fearful person will look forward to it. Once you have that big white smile, you just may find yourself attracting that special someone. When that happens, make sure your breath is ready. Many products temporarily mask bad breath, but due to high alcohol content, they will actually dry out your mouth, allowing bacteria that causes bad breath to multiply. Therefore, always look for mouth rinses that don’t contain alcohol. Ask your dentist to recommend a good product. Many of the best

products for bad breath that prevent cavities and gum disease are distributed through dental offices. A diet full of fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens, yogurt, parsley, basil, ginger, and fennel can also combat bacteria in the mouth and help keep your breath fresh. Most importantly, making time to get a good night’s sleep will help reduce puffiness and give you a radiant glow. Hopefully this will be the summer of your life—so make sure you are ready to show off that beautiful, white, healthy smile. SMILE HEALTH SPA

A CONVERSATION WITH DR.KOLZET, UES PSYCHOLOGIST

Why Therapy is Essential For Your Health

D

o you mean to imply that everyone needs to be in therapy? Not exactly. The important message is that physical health is not separate from mental health. It’s becoming more and more evident that physical, behavioral, and environmental factors of health are inextricably linked. Psychologists work together with medical doctors to help patients optimize their health. Essentially, psychologists are behavioral health interventionists. We have the ability to listen to and understand information, discuss the treatment of problems with clients, and help them adopt health-promoting behaviors as well as disease prevention and management strategies.

What are some examples of health-promoting behaviors? Regular aerobic exercise, eating a balanced diet, minimizing sugar intake, not smoking, drinking alcohol in moderation, regular sleep, annual physical examinations, hand washing, and seat belt use are all considered healthpromoting behaviors. Eat right. Exercise. The usual advice, huh? Yes, but here’s the difference. Take adherence to a healthy diet and regular aerobic exercise. Doctors have been telling people for years to eat healthy and exercise. Unfortunately, most people haven’t been taught how to engage in these health-promoting behaviors. How to set goals, how to boost their confidence, how to motivate themselves to go to the gym even when they don’t want to, how to curb emotional eating, how to adopt a more positive attitude, how to problem solve, how to get back on track when they experience a setback, etc. The good news is that these skills can be learned. I understand that you teach these skills to individuals of all ages and groups. What can one expect when they come to your office for the first time? When you first come to my office, I will ask

56 • Resident June 2015

you to fill out several self-report forms that assess a range of problems and symptoms. In addition, I will ask you questions that are designed to evoke change (e.g. What makes you think that you need to do something about your ______?). The purpose of this evaluation is to collect as much information about you as possible, so I can learn quickly what you would like to address. Together, we will develop a plan of action. Treatment can be relatively short-term or as long as you find it helpful. It is focused on how you are thinking, behaving, and communicating today. Your treatment focuses more on the present and less on early childhood experiences? In short, yes. When it comes to accomplishing your current goals, it isn’t always necessary to engage in lengthy discussion of how your parents, siblings, and peers treated you. By way of learning and practicing new skills, exploring personal strengths that can help you to succeed, and identifying people in your life who can offer support, it is easier for you to create change. Rather than get bogged down in the “why” the focus is more on what is important to you in your life right now. What’s the best way to go about developing goals? For starters, goals need to be specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, and timely. “I will walk around outside during lunch for 20 minutes while making phone calls” is a much more attainable goal than, “I will walk more.” It is also important to address any barriers that might get in the way of achieving a goal. This is something that I do with my clients--we troubleshoot. And they know that I will ask how things went in our next session, which fosters accountability. A key takeaway is that when we attain a goal we increase our selfefficacy. What is self-efficacy? It is the confidence we have in our own ability

to perform a specified behavior. Success has the power to raise self-efficacy. Have you heard the phrase, success begets success? What’s a practical example? Consider replacing that orange juice with sparkling water. The significance of this behavioral change for an individual who wants to lose weight goes beyond the 90 calories he/ she spared for opting for water. This behavioral change promotes health self-efficacy, and in turn, increases the chance that he will continue to engage in health-promoting behaviors. Overtime, these small changes add up. Just like with kids, it is important for adults to reward or compliment themselves for positive behavior change. When we experience positive reinforcement we are more likely to feel confident in our ability to make additional positive changes. The more confidence you have to make a change, the more successful you will be. Any suggestions about ways to strengthen our confidence? Ask yourself, on a scale of 0 to 10, how

confident you are that you will be able to change a behavior that you wish to change? If your answer is above 0, ask yourself, what makes this a ___, and not a zero? What would it take to make that number 2 or 3 points higher? Recall things you did successfully in the past. Remember how you did those things. What did you do to make them happen? Think about how you can use successful techniques from the past to accomplish what you want to do now! Dr. Kolzet is a licensed psychologist and educational consultant specializing in wellness. Her office is located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. In her clinical practice, Dr. Kolzet works with adults and children individually and in a group setting. THE NYC PRIVATE SCHOOL ADMISSIONS HANDBOOK By Jennifer Brozost and Vimmi Shroff

hat inspired us to write the nyc private school admissions handbook? We want to help parents on their journey through the admissions process, with the goal of helping you to obtain one of the ‘precious few’ acceptance letters.

Vimmi Shroff received her undergraduate degree in Business & Economics from University of Bombay in India and has a Masters in Education from NYU. She has taught at various private schools in NYC, worked as an Admissions Officer in a prominent NYC private school and also served as Director of Admissions.

Both Jennifer and Vimmi have written about the admissions process, published articles and have been quoted in a number of publications such as Parent’s Guide, Citibabes Newsletter, New York Family Magazine, New York Post Publishing Inc and The Economist. Jennifer and Vimmi are currently Education Bloggers for The Huffington Post and are also featured columnists for The Resident Magazine. Their company, PEAS, has been featured in The Hamptons’ Social Life Magazine as well as on Bloomberg Small Business Report. For more information you can visit: www.nypeas.com.

We have been there and we have gotten through it all smiling. We want to help bright and talented parents who are put in an impossible situation: navigating the crazy and competitive world of New York City private school admissions.

Jennifer Brozost graduated from NYU and received her Master‘s degree in Education from Columbia University’s Teachers College. She also has a degree in the advanced teaching of Reading and Writing from Columbia University’s Reading and Writing Project. Jennifer has taught in a private NYC elementary school and worked for many years as an Admissions Officer in a prominent NYC private school.

THE NYC PRIVATE SCHOOL ADMISSIONS HANDBOOK

We have witnessed the innocent mistakes of overwhelmed parents: thank you letters sent or addressed to the wrong directors, parents writing about their educational philosophies that are polar opposite to the school’s philosophy to which they are applying, a ten page thesis on a four year old’s strengths, couples disagreeing and arguing in the interview, parent’s failure to turn off their smartphones, asking too many questions during the group tour, acting completely disinterested, calling the admissions office incessantly or not paying proper attention to the appropriate protocol when applying to schools… to name but a few of the common errors!

after the parent interviews, and we have fallen in love with schools that were not the right fit for our children (knowing, from our many years of experience, that they would never end up in these schools).

Parent Guide News: “They put parents in the know when it comes to getting children into Manhattan’s top schools…The duo guides families through the admissions process, from filling out applications to ultimately identifying the right school for each child. Visit www.nypeas.com to begin your family’s personal success story.” New York Family Magazine: “They boast 15 years of admissions experience at the city’s top private schools. Now they’ve created PEAS, a Private Education Advisory Service that helps guide other families through the whole process, from filling out applications to ultimately identifying the right school for your child.”

what to order in the hamptons this season

I

n today’s world, choices confront us at every turn. It used to be a simple coffee with cream and sugar—now it’s a no-fat foam double latte with extra whip; there are more options than ever before. As the day wears on, many are afflicted by what has come to be known as decision fatigue. Once it sets in, the sufferer begins to make impulsive decisions. If it happens at a restaurant while ordering dinner, the result is often order-envy. At this point, it’s too late, and you’re left with a meal that falls flat of expectations. In an effort to stave off this debilitating dilemma, we’ve compiled a list of the best items to order in some of the Hampton’s most popular restaurants.

Start in Montauk at Backyard Restaurant at Sole East. Here,

those in the know opt for the fluke ceviche with yuzu-marinated fluke, cucumber wasabi salad, pickled fennel and plantain chips.

Or hit up 668 The Gig Shack for some global surf cuisine, and check out their blackened local fish montacos with homemade mango salsa and creamy coleslaw in a crunchy corn tortilla. In Amagansett, Indian Wells

Tavern is the place for the perfect grilled ribeye, a 14-ounce cut, seasoned with house steak rub, char-grilled to your liking, with horseradish sauce, fingerling potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

The options in East Hampton are plentiful. The teriyaki grilled salmon with vegetable rice, sautéed spinach and teriyaki drizzle at Harbor Grill hits the spot. And what list of Hamptons’ dishes would be complete without a lobster roll? If you’re looking for the best one out east, look no further than Bostwick’s Chowder House. It’s a big statement, but we believe they’ve got the

claws (and the tail) to back it up. If crispy calamari is more your style, head over to Fresno, where theirs is served with siracha-lime aioli. For a classic burger, put your fists around the Rowdy Burger at Rowdy Hall. It’s certified all-natural Black Angus with American, Swiss, Cheddar or Blue Cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion or fried onion served with handcut French friends and a pickle. The toughest decision here is whether or not to add some bacon. Don’t miss out on the all-natural jerk chicken with fried plantains at this season’s newcomer, Winston’s Bar and Grill. Further west in Southampton, nibble on the grilled cheese sandwich at little|red. This grown-up version is made with brie, slow roasted duck, braised cabbage and Dijon. Follow this list of great eats that are guaranteed to please the palate and there’s one less decision to be made. No need to stress next time you hit the road and head to the beach. But are you taking the Jitney or the train???

The Grand Cercle des Vins de Bordeaux By Hillary Latos R ecognizing a need to promote the excellent yet lesser known Bordeaux wines of the left and right banks, Docteur Alain Reynaud established the Grand Cercle des Vins de Bordeaux in 2002, which showcases nearly 200 Bordeaux wines selected for their superb quality and reasonable price.

The Bordeaux region is naturally divided by the Gironde Estuuary, with the left bank creating the Medoc and Graves region and the right bank encompassing the Libournais, Bourg, and Blaye appellations. Throughout the last 200 years Bordeaux has established itself as having a distinct wine with strong personalities that have set the bar for wines around the world. Originally, the first commercially viable wines came from the left bank, while the newer right bank wines were recognized for their innovative blending and continuous quest for perfection. To become a member, the Grand Cercle estates must share a common geographical location, including right bank appellations such as Bordeaux, Entre-

Deux-Mers, Sainte-Foy Bordeaux, Cadillac, Blaye, Pomerol, Saint Emilion, Blaye, and Canon Fronsac. The left bank appellations include Medoc, Saint Estephe, Pauillac, SaintJulien, Listrac, Moulis, Margaux, Graves, Pessac-Leognan, Sauternes and Barsac.

Ensuring the highest quality wines also comes with a strict code of ethical practices. Every estate must maintain a continuous quest for innovation, including an analysis of cross sections of the different soil types, water drainage,

and disease control. To achieve the optimal ripeness of grapes, yields must be controlled by pruning, bud and sucker removal, and also engage in eco-friendly organic pesticides. Additionally, wines must be aged in oak barrels to achieve specific aromatic qualities and more complex bouquets. And unlike most of the chateaus in the region, they must welcome visitors to the estates to explore the vineyards, landscapes, and wines. Not only is Dr. Alain Reynaud the president of the Grand Cercle des Bordeaux, but he is a consultant to the wine estates in France, California, and Argentina bestowing his knowledge to wineries around the world. In 2011, he also founded his own winery, Chateau du Parc, a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru that lies on five hectares of sandy gravelly soils to the South and clay limestone soils to the North, making it ideally suited to grow 80 percent Merlot and 20 percent Cabernet Franc. coming beds complete the picture. The hotel also offers deluxe studios, one, two and three bedroom suites, some with a full kitchen, dining room, private balcony, Jacuzzi and a fireplace—perfect for crisp Maine evenings in the late spring and early fall. With all that Bar Harbor has to offer, you might not want to spend too much time in their beautiful rooms, but with the hotel’s dining options, you’ll probably find it difficult to leave the property. There’s La Bella Vita, reminiscent of an Italian trattoria, with indoor and outdoor seating and a serene, lovely atmosphere, which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and emphasizes wholesome ingredients, including garden-grown vegetables. There’s the casual Pool House in The Bar Harbor Club, serving light fare at their gorgeous pool and Jacuzzi. And there’s Enoteca, a wine bar ad-

jacent to La Bella Vita, serving antipasti and small plates. Each of the restaurants serves top quality, delectable dishes, and they are some of the finest in Bar Harbor. Harborside guests enjoy a heated pool, a top-notch fitness center, and a state-of-the art spa, offering luxurious accommodations and fabulous treatments such as the Rose Petal Envelopment and Bayside Island Wrap body treatments. A day shopping in Bar Harbor or hiking in Acadia National Park is best ended with a massage in Bar Harbor’s finest spa. Finally, guests of Harborside have access to the historic Bar Harbor Club, reopened in 2009 after a major renovation. The Bar Harbor Club, adjacent to the hotel, is a grand, stately Tudor facility steeped in Maine history that was the playground of Bar Harbor’s elite in its heyday. Here, Harborside guests can enjoy its two-story poolhouse, oceanfront pool and Jacuzzi (where you can enjoy a waterfront lunch and cocktails), the fabulous Bar Harbor Club Spa, a luxurious fitness room, oceanfront tennis, private function rooms, and access to the pier, marina, whale watching sails, and more. The Bar Harbor Club, in conjunction with the Harborside Hotel, is the perfect combination of seaside Maine luxury and stellar accommodations. For more information: theharborsidehotel.com

A Sojourn for the Oenophile

F

or the true wine lover, a trip to the Bordeaux region is the equivalent of the pilgrimage to Mecca, or embarking on a quest for the Holy Grail. This revered winemaking region is home to some of the most prestigious chateaus in the world, where each Grand Cru commands a higher price than the next, with the pricing and grading shrouded in mystery only adding to the allure. The wines of Bordeaux summate the French sense of perfectionism, where “challenging” vintages are blended in secretive proportions to create the ideal balance that would sway the palettes of the harshest critics. The somewhat arbitrary system of rank and classification, established in 1855 by Emperor Napoleon III, establishes an inherent hierarchy through different levels of grading,

By Hillary Latos

with the Premiere Grand Cru Classé at the top. Naturally, everything is priced accordingly.

The Gironde estuary divides the region into two distinct regions: the Left and the Right Banks. On the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary you have the cabernet-growing region with Margaux, Pauillac, Haut-Médoc, and also the sweeter Sauternes made from Sémillon grapes. The Right Bank features Merlot varietals with wineries from Saint-Émilion, Blaye, and Pomerol. One of the most relaxing and luxurious ways to explore this fascinating region is aboard the 5-star Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection for an all-inclusive experience that includes all gourmet meals, excursions, beverages, and gratuities. Embark on Uniworld’s River Royal, traversing both banks, with daily walking tours of charming cities and important winegrowing towns, to give a comprehensive and in-depth firsthand experience.

The trip embarks from Bordeaux and stops in Pauillac, centrally located in the renowned Haut-Médoc region, which is known for its strong and tannic Cabernets, and is home to some of the most prestigious chateaus such as Latour, Lafite Rothschild, and Mouton Rothschild. As most wineries presell 90 percent of their wines to merchants during en primeur, when vintages are bought in futures, most of the chateaus are closed to the public. Uniworld has access to many of these Premier Cru houses and has created intimate tours and tastings at these vineyards for their guests. The vineyards can be seen by bus or bicycle depending on your level of energy. The next stop includes the medieval Saint-Émilion on the Right Bank, known for its Merlot grapes that capture the rich flavors of limestone and clay; it is home to the prestigious Cheval Blanc and Pétrus wineries. Though this region’s most famous wineries command the highest price tags, the wines were only classified in 1955 and every 10 years the win-

eries must reapply for Grand Cru status, allowing for up-and-comers to rise to the same levels as the established wineries. At the center of this medieval, walled city are the Cordeliers Cloister and abbey, with its intricate maze of underground caves that had once connected every winery in the region. This monolithic church also serves as the

meeting grounds to the secret society, Brotherhood of Saint-Émilion, consisting of famous Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wine enthusiasts, such as Robert Parker. This is where elected, red-robed jurats materialize once a year to release the new vintage. Explore the culinary capital of the Dordogne and Périgord regions known for their foie gras. Step back in time and explore the charming winding cobblestone streets of Bergerac, a picturesque medieval town named after its most famous resident, Cyrano de Bergerac, and dotted with different statues offering exaggerated versions of his most famous facial asset. Proving that Sauternes isn’t just a dessert wine, Uniworld takes you past the renowned Château d’Yquem and around the famous Sauternes region, where you can sample this beloved sweet wine from a prestigious chateau followed by an artisanal lunch and Sauternes wine pairing at Château d’Arche. Once the boat is docked overnight in Bordeaux, the local guides will

take you on an exploration to “do as the locals do” as well as an electrifying Bordeaux by Night tour. See Bordeaux by foot and taste the wonders of this culinary center, such as their famous canelés, chocolates, and sweet pastries, and explore the 18th century architecture and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. To taste the most prestigious wines of the appellation, visit Max Bordeaux Wine Gallery with top vintages from the likes of Pétrus, Margaux, and Cheval Blanc, all served in a relaxing art gallery setting. As Bordeaux offers myriad hidden gems inside this mystical city, Bordeaux Walking Tours offers tailored tours suited to your needs that go beyond just the highlights. Themes such as antiques and treasures, Bordeaux by Night, Jewish History, cultural shopping, and gourmet Bordeaux are just a few of their offerings. After the extensive touring, relax in style aboard the luxuriously appointed Uniworld River Royale, which offers an intimate setting with a maximum of 130 guests. Their

main dining room offers an extensive buffet for breakfast and lunch, as well as an à la carte dinner which changes nightly to reflect the regional dishes of the cities, or book the 10-person Claret Room for a formal multicourse pairing menu. Catch the sunset or indulge in a nightcap from their lively Gascagone bar with live music, local entertainment, and an extensive all-inclusive bar menu. In warmer months, relax on their sundeck

as you sail slowly down the river and take in the picturesque scenery. Dine for lunch alfresco or in their airy and casual Blue Fox café with Cornish blue banquettes and printed tiles. The spacious and lavishly appointed stateof-the-art rooms are decorated with a regal European flair similar to a boutique hotel, with handcrafted Savoir of England beds, European duvets, and Egyptian cotton sheets. The Category 1 rooms have floor-toceiling windows with a balcony to enjoy the sea air. The bathrooms feature L’Occitane en Provence toiletries, plush towels, and robes to indulge in. Everything about the Uniworld voyage embodies the joie de vivre of France and celebrates the sweet life of the region. For more information: uniworld.com bordeauxwalkingtours.com

The Luxe Life of Paris

F

or over a hundred years, the Plaza Athénée has been synonymous with haute living in Paris among the beau monde—from jetsetters and A-listers to royalty and moguls. After undergoing a massive 200-million Euro renovation, the newly refurbished Plaza Athénée is poised to be the epitome of Parisian luxury on Avenue Montaigne—home to the world’s largest concentration of haute couture houses. The stately exterior is accented by signature red awnings and blossoming red flowers and served as the iconicyet-romantic backdrop to “Sex and the City” and countless other movies. Upon entering you can’t help but be swept up into the romantic notions of Paris in the spring, with the beautiful floral arrangements, glistening chandeliers, and lavish interiors. The perfect embodiment of modern French luxury, the renovated rooms have all been designed by Marie-José Pommereau, whose refined and elevated taste has defined the image of the hotel over

the last 14 years. Sparing no expenses, Pommereau chose a palette of warm tones, including peony, yellow, and silver, to decorate the rooms in luxurious fabrics such as silk damask and embroideries from top couture houses. To truly immerse yourself in a Parisian experience, book an Eiffel Tower suite with priceless panoramic views of the majestic Eiffel Tower. Choose from décor inspired by the 19thcentury classical Parisian haute couture style of Baron Haussmann, with lustrous pinks ac-

cented with pearl grey and silver tones, or the sleek and modern grey-hued Art Deco aesthetic created by Jean-François Lesage. Dining at the Plaza Athénée is a treat for the gourmand, and includes the two-star Michelin flagship, Alain Ducasse, who turns a meal into a journey in a truly magical setting. The haute cuisine is only matched by the décor, with a dining room designed by Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku, who have turned fantasy into reality with soft ’70s-inspired silver curved banquettes that reflect the twinkling, hanging crystals and impressive chandelier. Le Relais Plaza is also a favorite haunt among the high-end Avenue Montaigne neighbors who come for the brilliantly-executed Parisian brasserie fare in an upscale art deco atmosphere. As Le Relais Plaza opened in 1936, it still retains the original details that embody the flair of Paris in its glorious heyday, but with a modern update that speaks to the chic crowd which frequent this quintessentially Parisian brasserie. A Modern Delight

et on the hillside town on Bouliac— known as the balcony of Bordeaux— with its panoramic view of the famed city, sits the modern and contemporary Le Saint James, created from an elongated group of 18th century farmhouses and named after the famous street in historic downtown Bordeaux. Designed in 1989 by Jean Nouvel, the fivestar Le Saint James is a member of the Relais & Chateaux group, and epitomizes the boutique hotel experience with only 18 rooms and suites, and an extensive curated collection of modern art. Each room has a unique, modern flair with contemporary designer furnishings and quirky accoutrements, including funky sculptures and even a Harley Davidson.

An exterior rusted metal facade is a warm juxtaposition against the lofty feel of the rooms, which feature polished concrete floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, and beds that give a unique perspective on the stunning panoramic views of the vineyards and the city of Bordeaux. Located on four hectares of landscaped grounds, the modern pool offers a relaxing respite to recharge and rejuvenate. A treat for the gourmand, Le Saint James’

Michelin-starred restaurant is one of the best in Bordeaux, attracting locals and tourists who make this a destination. The dining room was designed to resemble a terraced garden, with walls of windows overlooking the beautiful landscaped greenery and vineyard. At the helm of the kitchen is the talented Nicolas Magie, who has perfected his skills in prestigious kitchens such as Le Crillon in Paris and the Miramar in Biarritz, and has always had an affinity towards the Aquitane region. His cuisine is inventive, well balanced, and creatively presented, drawing on classical fla-

vors mixed with a modern twist. Demonstrating his true talents for marrying distinct textures and flavors are some of the specialties of the house, such as the scampi red legs— roasted and poached in an acid broth with Allymis flowers and cucumber sorbet—and grilled foie gras in acid candies with rhubarb and duck juice. The main courses take you on a gastronomic journey with offerings that include veal sweetbreads dusted with Ethiopian coffee and acidic mushrooms, braised duck leg perfumed with sheets of strawberry plants and piquillos, and John Dory steamed with crab and citrus flowers and paired with stuffed zucchini flowers and stewed squid ink juice. For those who want to bring some of the culinary magic back home, enroll in the cooking school taught under Chef Magie’s guidance, which forays into sweet and savory themes, from snacking to oenology and gastronomic classics for an experience unmatched anywhere else. Chateau Cordeillan Bages is connected to the esteemed vineyard, Chateau Lynch Bages, and designed around a stately 19th century chartreuse with turrets dating back to the 17th century. The decor marries modern day comfort with a nod to the past, interweaving a vast contemporary art collection curated by the owner, with the design aesthetic of a Milanese decorator housed in a carefully restored mansion that reflects the restrained grandeur of the noble class. Located in the picturesque village of Bages, the five-star Chateau Cordeillan Bages is a member of the Relais & Chateaux group, and offers the intimate experience of a boutique hotel with only 28 rooms that feel more like those in a wealthy friend’s expansive manse. with modern art work to punctuate the room with pops of bright color. Rooms are bathed in sunlight and greenery, with floor-to-ceiling windows and views over the appellation; some rooms have outdoor terraces leading onto the landscaped gardens, filled with wafts of verbena and pine. The gleaming star of the Chateau Cordeillan Bages is their two Michelin starred restaurant helmed by celebrated Chef, Jean Luc Rocha, who has also earned the meilleur Ouvrier de France. A hedonist’s delight, his specialty is his knack for perfectionism in the kitchen.

Here, guests enjoy a contemporary take on French cuisine that uses the finest regional products available, expertly paired with the fine wines of Bordeaux. The extensive wine list includes 1,500 wines with a curated selection of rare Bordeaux grand crus not found anywhere else. Chef Rocha retains the traditional flavors of haute gourmand French cuisine, but adds a bit of unexpected fantasy and sophistication for a unique and memorable gastronomical experience—best enjoyed through the chef’s table. Some of the most creative and sublime combinations that have earned him his well-deserved accolades are the warm foie gras in cereal dust and apple sorbet, blue lobster with passion fruit and coral emulsion, and king salmon with cucumber jelly, oysters, and caviar. Open from March until November, the Chateau Cordeillan Bages is an excellent base to explore the Medoc valley and experience the art of wine as a way of life. The Medieval Treasure of Saint-emilion A

t the heart of the medieval UNESCO world heritage village of Saint Émilion is its Grand Dame, the Hostellerie de Plaisance. Beauty, history, and a gourmandise are united as one in this stately five-star luxury Relais and Chateau property overlooking the vineyards of one of Bordeaux’s most renowned wine making appellations. Step back in time to the Middle Ages as you meander through this cliffside village filled with narrow cobblestone streets and stone buildings. Named after a patron saint, Saint Émilion was originally designed as a religious sanctuary and merchant village, and was modeled after ancient monasteries and the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. As you explore the town, pay attention to the symbolic maze that links the historical village to Egypt through its carved signs and hieroglyphs in strategically placed areas of religious significance. At the center of this perfectly preserved 12th century village is the iconic monolith church and bell tower, which is connected to the neo classical Hostellerie de Plaisance by suspended

By Hillary Latos gardens surrounding a picturesque terrace overlooking the rolling hills of vineyards and ancient pink-tiled rooftops. Every room reflects a different design and color palette personally chosen by Charlotte Perse, who has a refined and elegant contemporary French aesthetic that pays a nod to the regal building’s classical structure. The luxuriously appointed rooms feature fabric-covered walls, Egyptian cotton sheets, and infinite views of the countryside. For a romantic treat, choose one of the suites in the new tower, with an en-

suite private garden filled with the beautiful scents of flowering jasmine and honeysuckle. Relax in the terrace under the canopy of the imposing bell tower, or grab a glass of fine Bordeaux wine in their swanky bar, a room bathed in light and tastefully decorated with paintings by Bernard Buffet. Embark on a gastronomic journey at their Michelin-starred restaurant, under the direction of the young and talented Chef Cedric Bechade, who trained for 10 years under Alain Ducasse at the Plaza Athenee in Paris. His refined cuisine is sourced from local purveyors, and he offers a creative flair that plays on textures and contrasts in taste and presentation. The extensive wine list is heavily concentrated on the renowned wines of Saint Émilion, and was curated by master sommelier Cedric Bechade, who has perfected his skill to find the ideal pairing to enhance each dish. A life well lived is a life worth living, and the Hostellerie de Plaisance is a perfect embodiment of this mantra. For more information: HostelleriedePlaisiance.com

LUXURY AT HOME IN THE HAMPTONS, INSIDE AND OUT

F

rom luxury cars and homes to high-end goods and transportation, you can find it all in the Hamptons. Whether a multimillion dollar estate on the ocean, or a historic home in the village, Hamptons homeowners always emphasize the outdoor living space. An amazing pool is central to any outdoor living space, and Pristine Pools is a leader in cutting-edge pool and outdoor entertaining area design and installation. Owner Greg Darvin specializes in a clean and modern aesthetic, while concentrating on functionality. He concentrates on a holistic approach, creating an outdoor space centered around the primary use for the client. One design trend Darvin has seen grow over the past few years is integrated shallow sun shelves for lounging within the pools. These sun shelves often include a sleeve incorporated into the structure to allow for an umbrella to be added for shade or style. Another design element increasing in popularity is rim flow or “zero” edge pools, allowing an unobstructed view of the background and landscape beyond the pools, often including a water view. Yet another trend that Darvin highlights is the pool surround. Sourc-

ing and installing the proper stonework that works with the environment and the space is a skill at which not many excel. There are an infinite number of materials available, however, very few are a fit for the Hamptons environment. The real skill is to differentiate the materials and create the right pattern and design that complements the space. Impeccable quality control, cutting-edge designs, and a wealth of knowledge and experience are the cornerstone of Pristine Pools. When not entertaining outdoors, the indoor living space becomes the center of attention in Hamptons homes. Homeowners not only

desire high-end design elements, but the preference for unique and specialized items has become more prevalent. Copious Row, the new lifestyle store that recently opened in Sag Harbor, offers several rare and exclusive items from top-quality brands, with a supreme aesthetic appeal that’s perfect for the Hamptons home. The curation of items at Copious Row represents owner David Chines’ affection for beautiful things. Copious Row, for example, is the exclusive distributor of Karl Lagerfeld candles. These highly coveted, scented candles have limited distribution in the United States, and Copious Row carries the three distinct scents. The store also carries Alexandra Von Furstenberg home décor items, such as coasters and bowls, Tom Dixon home accessories, Rablabs natural coasters, and Rani Arabella throw pillows and blankets. The selection of items at Copious Row is directed at the discerning shopper who is constantly in search of unique items that emphasize their personal style. Whether it’s indoors or outdoors, luxury abounds in the Hamptons’ homes.

Art/Life Introspective B

Inside the Work and World of Artist Brenda Zappitell

orn in 1964 in South Florida’s Delray Beach, artist Brenda Hope Zappitell creates abstract expressionist works that are born out of intuition, yet serendipitously influenced by nature and life experiences. They are meditations on emotions and color, lines and movement, inspired by her travels, her life experiences, and her innermost feelings. Zappitell’s work is authentic because she lives it, creating it without worry or regret, while living deeply in the moment. If Zappitell was born an artist, it wasn’t until she graduated from law school and practiced the profession for five years that she fully embraced it as a career and a lifestyle. It was in the early 2000s that her work began gaining attention, but she leapt into the public eye in the past six years, with acclaimed group, dual, and solo shows in New York and other major cities.

126 • Resident June 2015

Her paintings, she says, “emerge from the emotion I feel in the moment my brush touches a blank surface,” which results in dramatic, tangible strokes that capture deep, ephemeral feelings. Her work is in both private and public collections throughout the country, including The St. Regis Hotel in New York City, The Hard Rock Hotel in Tampa, FL, The University of North Texas Business Leadership Building, and in a private collection that includes Joan Mitchell, Cleve Gray, Helen Frankenthaler, and more. Her latest collection can be viewed at an upcoming solo exhibition at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Brenda Hope Zappitell: A Journey of Gestures will be on display July 25 through August 23, 2015.
