April showers…we all know the saying (hopefully this year won’t be so wet). We are excited to present this month’s edition. From famed TV personalities to the best in travel, theater and fashion; we have it all! We were so lucky (and I was over-the-moon with joy) to snag Susan Lucci for the cover. A long time crush of mine, Ms. Lucci is everything one could ask for and more. Beautiful, smart, passionate, well spoken, dedicated; she is what makes a star, a star (it doesn’t hurt that she’s Italian too). In addition to Susan, we have Shabini Joshi of Fox Business Network fame. It turns out that we are connected through a work relation; and she was gracious, smart and insightful during our sit down. I hope you like the piece as much as I liked interviewing her. Another important get for us was Isabel Leonard, the up-andcoming opera star. Over a cup of coffee, we discussed her love of New York, having a child in the city, her voice and her recital tour (of which she is very proud). This month we feature travel destinations from Santorini (thanks to Kitty Pilgrim), Morocco, Portugal, Pasadena and many other wonderful places. We also have a feature on Curious Jane Camps – a great program for girls that preaches empowerment and a can-do spirit. We are very happy to announce an expansion of our social column, Around the Town. Joe Alexander and Patrick McMullen are consummate professionals. The whole Resident staff is in agreement that it elevates the publication; and we are proud to present them. A quick word on Tasting New York – we thought it was a huge success! While admittedly crowded (aren’t ALL tastings crowded?), the food was excellent, Ernie Anastos was genial, and Claire Thomas was beautiful and put together. We plan on having an event in October (details to follow). Hope to see you there!

Susan Lucci, the beautiful and multifaceted actress, who played Erica Kane on All My Children is so many wonderful adjectives that I can’t list them all out. Needless to say, I am a huge admirer and was over joyed to have the opportunity to spend a day with her in her beautiful home in Garden City. What follows below is an example of a woman who is passionate about acting. We talked about her career on the soap, her ventures and what it means to be a New Yorker. Enjoy!

Resident

Resident: What does it mean to be a New Yorker?

R: How has New York colored your professional career?

Susan Lucci: Well, I was born in Yonkers. My mother was a nurse at Yonkers General Hospital before I was born. I grew up in Garden City and as an adult I spent most of my life working in New York City but living in Garden City.

SL: I think from the beginning it colored my professional career. As a little girl growing up in New York, I was lucky that my parents took me to Radio City Music Hall, and Broadway plays, and I knew from the time I could remember that I wanted to be an actress. Certainly watching TV came before I was going to the movies or plays, and when I would watch I knew I wanted to do it, not just look from the sidelines. Many of my childhood dreams had to do with performing, even in church I imagined the alter as a stage!

So what does it mean to be a New Yorker? Well, very lucky. I feel very lucky being surrounded by the people who are so bright and the energy of this city. While I was growing up, I would put on my parent’s Broadway cast albums and I would dream of being an actress one day. I feel blessed to be surrounded by everything that this means. It’s exciting to be a part of this city of gorgeous buildings, paintings, people, restaurants, music - and everything that it has to offer.

Resident April 2013

I studied at Marymount College in Tarrytown. I sometimes took classes at the Manhattan campus when there was a director or lecturer, but all the drama faculty were working professionals and the head of

the drama department was part of Lincoln Center Rep and Café la Mama – in fact his roommate was Philip Michael Bosco. So, to grow up as a person who wanted to be an actress, such good examples and such fantastic teachers surrounded me. Yale school of drama teachers and the head of the department all had graduated from the Yale School of Drama, and some from the Royal Shakespeare Company in London. The lighting designer was also working on Broadway and off Broadway, so they were all working professionals. We cast all of our shows at Marymount in the professional newspapers for the professional actors in New York, so while in class you may push the envelope where girls play boys and you play all the parts, when it came time to do a performance, we would cast the male parts and even the character actresses sometimes from New York. I got exposed to

that early on. R: Did you always want to do soaps, or was it something that just happened and you grew into it? SL: It’s just something that happened! I grew up watching soaps with my mother and her best friend, as well as her daughter who was my best friend growing up, so even at lunch in front of the TV – before Newsweek told our mothers that wasn’t the best thing to do to – we used to watch everything on TV, including lots of movies. There were all sorts of shows on when I was growing up like The Early Show, The Late Show, The Million Dollar Movie, etc. I even used to sneak up at night and watch TV when my parents thought I was in bed. There were also a lot of Armstrong Circle Theatre which I believe were live performances.

R: There were a lot of live performances back then? SL: Lots when I was growing up. So it wasn’t necessarily that I wanted to be in TV – actually, because the head of the department at Marymount was from the Yale School of Drama, honestly, he wanted me to go to Julliard for grad school when it had just started. Professionally, it was either anyone’s conversation or mind, and certainly not daytime television even though I grew up being a fan. go on was for a new soap opera called All My Children. I wasn’t even going to go to the audition. I did go, thank heavens, because when I read the breakdown, the audition script, it was fantastic! And for someone just

out of school – this was before the Brat Pack, they didn’t do many movies with leading teenage roles at the time. Anyway, here is this wonderfully written, 8-page audition scene between a 15 year old Erica Kane and her dogs. It didn’t resemble anything I had seen on TV but it did resemble real life, because most mothers and daughters were very reverential at that time, and here we have a real life mother and daughter with all the humor that goes along with it. Anyway, so I thought the part was really wonderful. I was worried about signing a long-term contract but my agent talked me into it at the time. He said, “Look, if you really hate it, we’ll see about getting you outta there.” But, I was mostly worried that the head of the drama department would hate it! And I thought if only he could see me reading it, maybe he would understand.

DESERT FANTASY: DAR AHLAM

A four hour drive south of Marrakech past the Atlas Mountains and Berber villages takes you to the desert palm oasis of Skoura and Dar Ahlam. From the th century Kasbah looks like a traditional fortress. You enter a windowless shadowy labyrinth that leads to a main area with sunlight, music and views of the pool and garden. Adobe walls blend seamlessly with the authentic Moroccan chic décor. There is no reception area, no sign that this is an exclusive Relais & Chateaux hotel with a spa and full service staff who appear and disappear and keep the place running like clockwork. Dar Ahlam is a favorite of jet setters and celebs, such as recent guest Jessica Chastain. Dining time is whenever you feel like it. out where your meal will be served. It may be a candle lit dinner in one of the maze like passageways themed ‘One Thousand and One Nights ’, or a lunch al fresco in the fragrant almond tree blossom dotted garden followed by a leisurely stroll, perhaps on one of the terraces with views of the starlit desert sky. You can be sure that you will never be in the same place twice, will never to served the same thing twice and that

the cuisine is sublime. Desserts are by famed Parisian patissier Pierre Herme. This aura of whimsy and surprise is the brainchild of a Paris event coordinator who specializes in creating fantasy experiences. Needless to say, no two rooms are alike, each with varying colors and striking design accents. Dar Ahlam also operates an exclusive camel safaris, bespoke décor and meals in fantasy mode. Starting this October, “The Road Of Memories” will offer a 5 stop luxurious, magical journey including a secluded beach near Agadir, a palm grove outside the desert village of Tighremet, mountain hot springs, Kasbah and of course, many surprises stop. On a tour in the palm grove with a local Berber cum philosopher, I learned that the secret of Skoura is sharing and charity. He spoke about clearing your mind in the desert and said that people who are in a hurry are already dead – a lot to ponder for an on-the-go New Yorker.

Located just outside the scenic village of Monchique, in the namesake mountain range known for its curative thermal waters, this tranquil retreat offers an impressive range of spa treatments and therapies. I sampled several, including a divine massage and a deep-cleansing facial that used microdermabrasion to gently remove the outer layer of the skin. My face glowed for days following the facial. I also had a biophysical evaluation, which to my delight showed that my metabolic age was over a decade younger! Following the evaluation, I received a summary report of my body composition

With the report in hand, I went to have a consultation with a nutritionist, who gave me guidance on what’s best for me to eat and a personalized nutrition plan. Between the treatments and consultations, my luxury suite at Longevity was a just the right kind of way, with lots of natural light and a vista of the ocean in the distance. Dining was another delight, savoring healthy gourmet cuisine by Olivier, paired with phenomenal views. The accent was on balanced meals, tasty and high in nutritional value and focused on fresh regional ingredients. But after a few days of bliss in the mountains, it was time to move to the coast of Algarve. I was to unwind at Vila Vita Parc Resort & Spa cliff overlooking the Atlantic. Inspired by Moorish architecture, the property has a smattering of buildings connected by stone paths that wind through 54-acre subtropical gardens. My Residence Grand

My holy land is located 3,000 plus miles west from my home in New York City and it is known as the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis, located Francisco Airport to Davis and as I drove I remembered the last time I had been there, when James Guymon ran the spirits program story in the Les Amis du Vin Magazine. The leaders in business and state government at the time realized that California had the potential to become one of the world’s foremost wine and grape producing regions. They also recognized the establishment of a premier research and educational institution as a critical ingredient in the recipe for economic success. Originally located on the UC Berkeley campus, the department was closed in 1919 with the passage of prohibition into law. I am a fan of living the off-peak life. This surely emanates from a formative sophomore year in college, which I worked my way through by being a bank teller at a branch then-distinguished for having the only fullystudent-teller roster. That was cool because it was a good mix of business who was selling our content to iTunes. For in different platforms that didn’t exist in television. Of course now that’s something that happens everyday, but at the time when I was working on it was very new. That’s where my connection with technology came in to play. One of the things we did was start a digital news channel for ABC called ABC News Now. I asked the creators one day, “No ones watching, can I be on it?” Michael Clementi, who is now a senior VP here at Fox News, was there and put me on the show. I would do it in between things, either report news or write for abc.com. The following day was a segment on the apps to download for the Super Bowl, like Super Bowl squares, what kind of food to make, the best apps for fans, things like that. On Monday when the blackout happened I was covering the business angle of that. I was doing that across Fox News, Fox Business the gamut which is quite fun. R: Where do you live in the city? SJ: West Chelsea by the Highline. My We bought a great new apartment there and the Highline and West Chelsea area have really been developing. Great restaurants,

They help low income individuals get education assistance. I was introduced to this when I was at Morgan Stanley. I was a mentor and a tutor on the weekends and was partnered with someone who needed to learn certain skill sets that I could teach – Excel, Word, getting their resume in order and interview prep – and I’ve been associated I’ve also done work with Beginnings for Children and have done children’s tutoring. wning a townhouse in Manhattan is the new “American Dream” and has become one of the biggest luxury splurges for the privileged set. The townhouse is like a modern-day castle. Once you own it, you can do whatever you want to it as long as you don’t violate zoning regulations and the house is not landmarked. Madonna, who purchased a 57-foot wide townhouse on East 81st street for $32M would certainly agree as her home was fully

piece of the Big Apple. This year, celebrity Chef Marcus Samuelsson purchased a 4,668-square-foot townhouse at 30 West 120th Street in Central Harlem for almost $2.9 million. Last December, banker Joseph Baratta, the global head of private equity at Blackstone, purchased a six-story six bedroom limestone mansion located at 1 East 94th Street. According to public records, this gorgeous mansion which features a landscaped terrace with 2010, Mexican billionaire and one of the world’s richest men, Carlos Slim, purchased a century-old Beaux Arts (1890-1920 period) townhouse located at 1009 Fifth Avenue and East 82nd for a whopping $44 million. At the time, Slim’s purchase was one of the most expensive townhouse sales ever in New York City history. 428 East 84th Street

Enjoying All That EAST MIDTOWN Has To Offer By Christopher A. Pape

A

s one of the largest of New York City’s 67 Business Improvement Districts, the East Midtown Partnership covers all or part of 48 blocks of Midtown Manhattan. Since 2002, the East Midtown Partnership has worked to improve the quality of life and promote commercial activity in one of the world’s most vibrant, diverse communities. In January 2011 East Midtown started a series of informal networking events for professionals who live and/or work in the district. The events, entitled Social Stops, have now become a popular East Midtown Partnership program and have helped foster dozens of relationships. The East Midtown Partnership kicked off its 2013 Social Stop networking program in February at Bill’s Food & Drink (www. bills54.com), located in a nineteenth-century townhouse at 57 East 54th Street. Nearly 100 members of the community gathered together to make new professional contacts and catch up with old friends. “We are excited to host our Social Stop networking events again this year,” said Rob Byrnes, president of the East Midtown Partnership. “These events offer a great opportunity for members of the East Midtown community to socialize with excitement and energy. We hope everyone who works and lives in East Midtown will stop by, socialize and unwind at our upcoming Social Stop events during the year.” Social Stop networking events for the remainder of the year are still being planned but are scheduled to take place in May and September.

“Each participating business will create their Passport card,” said Byrnes. “This program will provide cardholders with a new way to save, while at the same time exposing them to the best of East Midtown’s shopping and dining experiences.” A current list of participating business and deals will be listed on the East Midtown Partnership website. To get a Passport card, visit the website or stop by the Partnership’s also be distributed throughout the district and through local community groups. mailing address, and email address to register the card. The Passport program is free for participating businesses and free for cardholders. To learn more, sign up your business, or get your Passport card, visit eastmidtown.org U

In addition to the Social Stops, members of the community should also keep an eye out for East Midtown Partnership’s new Passport select businesses. The program, scheduled to launch this month, is designed to direct tens of thousands of cardholders to participating district businesses. The reusable Passport cards will give cardholders access to discounts and special offers at stores and restaurants throughout the East Midtown area.

I am in love with Noah Waxman. He recently invited me to his New York City studio for a sneak preview of his debut collection of men’s and women’s shoes for Fall 2013; the shoes are stylish, luxurious and also whimsical, with unusual colors and details you don’t see elsewhere. I want to wear them! Noah has loved shoes since his childhood in rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania, but it was only recently that he was able to bring his dreams to life by collaborating with master artisans to realize his design ideas. The shoes are handcrafted in the USA, and Noah closely supervises every step of the process; he studied the art of shoemaking for many years in Holland, and has a deep understanding of shoemaking from the sole up. His materials are the finest leathers and fabrics, his soles are Goodyear welted and built to last, and the fit is both elegant and comfortable. I say run, don’t walk! Go to Noah’s website at noahwaxman.com and see the rest of his collection.

New York Fashion Week After the New Year rings in, New York City is relatively quiet until February as Fashion Week blows in with gusto, much like the hard hitting Nemo that paid us a visit this time. But not even a gusty 2 foot Noreaster could stop the resilient fashionistas from the shows and festivities.

Fashion week really starts in the days prior to the catwalk shows, making it a 2 week whirlwind of shows, presentations, cocktail soirees, and late night after parties. Starting a week before, Etro held a soiree in its gorgeous Soho store to preview their new Spring collection and colorful new ad campaign by Erik Madigan Heck. That same night, Jeffrey Fashion Cares held a kick off party with Town & Country at their anniversary for their gala event on April 2 on the Intrepid.

Some of the best events are right before the fashion frenzy begins. John Varvatos held a party at the new Soho hotspot, Houston Hall, to celebrate his newly designed website and introduce Style and Substance, from chefs to athletes and entertainers, whose creativity and dedication to their work parallel the same spirit of John Varvatos’ approach to his craft, which are hard steps to follow. Also in Soho, well wishers headed to the Rug Company to fete celebrated interior and fashion designer to the stars, Kelly Wearstler, on her 4th tome, Rhapsody, which takes an intimate look at her glamorous life, striking residential projects, and creative process. On the opening day of Fashion week, Jessica Jesse & Susie Holmes, the designers behind, Budha Girl held an intimate dinner at La Grenouille to introduce their line of beautiful Zen like jewelry “with a mindful purpose and ritual” that is handcrafted from Southeast

Held at the iconic Copacabana, the decadence of their 90s heyday was resurrected at least for one night, bringing glam drag queens, supermodels, celebrities, jetsetters, and chic fashionistas. While previous seasons we saw color blocking and illusion panels against a lean silhouette, this season that silhouette has art embellishments derived from furniture design such as intricate passementerie appliques and lace patterns. This was seen at Catherine Malandrino who was inspired by the French Art Deco line of Emile Jacques Ruhlmann. Elongated silhouettes were illustrated by funnel neck collard coats to med calf pencil skirts with black velvet ribbon that wrapped the body to create the illusion of movement. Laughter on and offBroadway By Barry Bassis N

ew Yorkers can use a good laugh and fortunately Broadway is coming through. “Old Hats” successfully mixes vaudeville comedy with modern technology. Bill Irwin and David Shiner are the (mostly) silent stars of this delightful show. The musical accompaniment is provided by a combo led by singer-songwriter Nellie McKay on piano and ukulele and her witty songs are the perfect complement. Her songs incorporate pop and jazz music to which she adds her own timely lyrics, such as the devastating song about feminism. She also makes the tart observation that there are more gun shops poke fun at politics and score points without speaking a word. During the course of the evening, they dance, battle each other and video projections, portray sad tramps and sleazy magicians, sometimes pulling audience members into the act. “Old Hats” is playing at Signature Theatre (480 W. 42nd St.; 212-244-7529; www. signaturetheatre.org) until May 9. “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” middle-aged brother and his sisters; Sonia is adopted. Masha is a movie star with a

history of failed marriages and Spike (a narcissistic actor) is her toy-boy. The parents of the siblings were professors and named characters, whom they resemble to some degree. Vanya (David Hyde Pierce) and Sonia (Kristine Nielsen) are caretakers of the Bucks County, Pa. property, which Masha (Sigourney Weaver) wants to sell. Added to the mix are a cleaning woman who foretells the future, appropriately named Cassandra (Shalita Grant), and a young aspiring actress named Nina (Genevieve Angelson). They direction. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderellla No Folly in Talley’s Folly T

he “girls” from Sex and the City would love Rogers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (Broadway Theater, 1681 Broadway). Laura Osnes is as much spunky Mary Tyler Moore (as in Lou Grant’s “You got spunk…. I hate spunk”) as marginalized maiden to Santino Fontana’s Topher. Harriet Harris’ step-mother is a gleefully wicked. The real star is the clothes – the quick changes done on stage as gowns are whisked from the rags of Ella and Fairy Godmother Marie (Victoria Clark), for which costume designer William Ivey Long deserves to take home yet another Tony. Lanford Wilson’s Talley’s Folly (Roundabout at Laura Pels Theater (111West 46th Street), tale of two unlikely lovers, Matt Friedman (Danny Burstein) a semi-rootless American Jew of uncertain (but probable Latvian) Eastern European heritage and Sally Talley (Sarah Paulson), the WASPy heiress to a Midwestern mill fortune.

family boathouse “folly,” where Matt has gotten Sally to semi-secretly meet with him to predictably propose. The Talleys (with the exception of Aunt Charlotte) are opposed, violently so, to the relationship between the 40-something-year -old Jew and their aging (31-year-old, as relayed by Aunt Lotte, rather than Sally’s admitted 28) shiksa princess. Matt’s family, for reasons that unfold in the course of the play, takes no position on the relationship and its potential. The pair, as described by both, met a year earlier, after which Matt (an accountant) wrote daily letters of detail that an IRS auditor would commend. Sally, unimpressed, has told nurses aide colleagues that she does not want to see him (and made him wait all day), yet, as Matt noticed, has put on a pretty summer dress.

matters during the tightly written oneact play. These included marginalization of Jews, the social isolation of those who (either for reasons of personal choice or physical inability) will not have children, conservative Republicans versus socialwelfare promoting Democrats (with some crossover, particularly appealing during these tense contemporary days of sequestration), old suitors and young (albeit aging) maids. There was, however, one aspect of the play that I did not care for, and which I found a detraction to the otherwise superb social commentary, superbly played with tremendous chemistry between the stars. I found mystifying a monologue at the beginning, delivered by Matt (and updated with the au courrant “turn off your cell phone” instruction), which was repeated at length (and warp speed) for “latecomers.” annoying and detracting.

rumpeters were the kings of early jazz and still excite audiences, as some of the top horn men will demonstrate with their groups during April and early May. Over the last decade, Jeremy Pelt has explored different backings, from a string section to a straight-ahead acoustic group. He has years in a row by Downbeat Magazine. On his new CD, “Water and Earth,” he moves into an electric jazz-fusion sound, which he had previously delved into with his group Wired. In the latest outing, Pelt utilizes a variety of electronic effects, including the Fender Rhodes and Prophet (played by Frank LoCrasto and David Bryant). Ra-Re Valverde provides a vocal on “Stay,” which she co-composed with Pelt. He wrote the other pieces, except for Stanley Clarke’s begins with the serene “Imagine the World” and works its way to music reminiscent of Miles Davis’ fusion work. Roxy Coss’ sax work (on tenor and soprano) is praiseworthy throughout. Pelt will celebrate the release Standard (116 E. 27th St.; 212-576-2232)

www.jazzstandard.com Trumpeter Gabriel Alegria is a pioneer of irresistible Peruvian jazz. His new CD is titled “Cuidad De Los Reyes” (City of Angels), which was the colonial name of Lima, Perú and is the city where Alegria was born and raised. He now lives in New York City and is on the jazz faculty at NYU. The album contains six tunes by Alegria, six by the group’s saxophonist Laura Andrea Leguia and one (“Moon River”) by Henry Mancini. (It’s notable that this group and Pelt’s both feature female sax players, which has become more common in jazz in recent years, with the rise of Anat Cohen, Jane Bunnett, Grace Kelly and others). The sextet also includes Yuri Juarez on guitar, Freddy “Huevito” Lobaton on cajon, cajita, and quijada, Hugo Alcazar and Shirazette Tinnin on drums and cajon and John Benitez on bass. The unique sound mixes jazz harmonies with dancederived Afro-Peruvian rhythms known as festejo, landó, tondero, valse, or zamacueca, all of which are rooted in 12/8 time. You can dance or listen, but either way, you will be captivated. Alegria will appear with his Afro–Peruvian sextet at Somethin’ Jazz (212 E 52nd St.; 212-371-7657) on April 13th.

Resident (R): Tell me what’s new. Samantha (SRM): We have tons of new classes! Each year we try to keep the popular classes that everyone has really enjoyed and add new projects to those. We also try to come up with new classes, and those emerge either from a spin on something which we’ve offered before, for example our “DIY costume class” and the “DIY room,” which were offshoots from our fashion class last year. Sometimes it’s something unique. For example, there was a camp mom I ran into whose daughter came in the fall and told me we should really do something with magic – so that’s where the “magic and mystery” class came from. And with the girls in the science class, we saw that they were really interested in the DNA sampling – so we can take that in the direction of “spy science.” So the classes generally come from feedback from the girls and their families. R: And you’ve also expanded. Have you franchised? SRM: We have not franchised, but that is something on our radar. We were a really small program, so we’re very involved in getting kids in the door, running a great program and then planning to expand – and we’re so excited about all of our new schools. The new schools are great matches for us. Part of the challenge is preserving that key to Curious Jane and then also letting it make sure that its part of the community and not something that they feel was imposed on them by some people from Brooklyn. R: And you’ve also expanded the length of opposed to 3 weeks.

By Cristopher A. Pape We are big devotees of Curious Jane – a camp for girls. Here they teach empowerment and a positive selfimage. I spoke with the creator, Samantha Razook Murphy, who told me of the many new developments.

SRM: In our new locations we’ve started classes around 2-3 weeks and then the locations in which we’ve been returning to, especially in New York, we’re there for a greater number of weeks. R SRM: For example, our program in New there, did great. The story behind it is that there was a family that went to this fabulous school in New Orleans who were

vacationing in Manhattan and sent their daughters to Curious Jane. They told their local school, so the school called us for more information. One thing led to another and now we have a fantastic program there. But we have strategically reached out to allgirls schools in the country that we thought of them respectfully decline, or already have their own thing and don’t have the space, but some of them are open to the idea and decide to give it a shot. R: Can you tell me more about the after school programs? SRM: We’re in both New York and Philly, and what we’re doing is trying to run spring programs in our new locations to introduce families to Curious Jane. When we enter a new school, we try to offer Saturday workshops or weekend workshops so families can get to know Curious Jane programs. But we don’t have our own space. We’re reliant on someone providing space for we can’t host the workshops. We’re currently looking for a more permanent space which we can use for our after school programs and weekend workshops. R: You’re all about empowerment for girls; how have your girls bonded? SRM: These camps weren’t very premeditated. They happened and they’ve organically grown into something fantastic – which I love. Something that has caught me by surprise is also how great an experience it can be for any staff member at any age involved. We can give a CIT (Counselor -in-Training) position to a wonderful young woman who is excited to work with children for the day, or we can give a counselor position for someone just out of college, or a director position to a talented woman who is ready to take on the leadership responsibilities and roles. Every day I love what I do, I’m excited to get up and go to work, and I get to work with amazingly talented people. R: When are you going to do the same thing for boys? SRM: We get this question a lot! And I hope someone does the same thing for boys. I absolutely see the need. When we began, schools would tell us that if we added a boy’s component that they would join in, so we had to make a really tough decision. We reached out to the families who had been with us from the beginning and their response was that they really look to use for the all-girls programming. That’s what

Bring on the Sunshine Kids all over America are getting excited – summer holidays are within dreaming distance. Historically, the break was designed around harvest time on the family farm. This time was not used a vacation for the children, but instead they were seen as an important part of the family workforce and spent their summers harvesting fruits and vegetables, and completing other chores. These days not many children will be working on the family farm, in fact it would be quite odd. In the most recent US census, farming as an in recent history. Instead, teens and tweens can be found playing for most of the summer and with that comes added cost. According to a recent survey conducted by American Express, the average cost per child for the summer holidays is now over $600. The most common activities include day trips to theme parks, and participation in sporting and educational activities. Other common costs include pool and club memberships, and day camps. Summer internships can lead to full-time Kodak, where I had previously worked as an intern. For students with paid summer jobs, learning how to responsibly save and spend money is a life lesson that goes hand in hand with earning it. Having their own money can be very exciting, but can also encourage impulse spending. Setting savings goals and learning how to spend wisely within parental supervision can make summer work that much more rewarding. Virtual Piggy gives young people tools to see their savings grow and teaches them how to budget. Using the summer holidays to garner real-life work experience was the original idea behind summer vacation and although students probably won’t be in farming roles, encouraging them to take summer jobs and internships will provide an opportunity for

Melanie Fraser Hart

Boston Designer Conquers NYC By Sydney Durieux Designer Melanie Fraser Hart’s fresh, modern, and sophisticated ready-to-wear line Callula Lillibelle is making it easy for the modern, multifaceted women to move from the boardroom to the bistro and beyond. “My goal is to design clothing that all women can wear,” explained Hart. “I hope that my clothes appeal to all types of women, allowing them to not only look great but feel great as well.” Over the past few months, Melanie, the CEO and creative director, has been wowing fashionistas and critics from New York to China. Since launching Callula Lillibelle, Hart has been on the go, bouncing back and forth between Boston and Manhattan. This past December, Melanie Fraser Hart was among ten international designers to show during Chengdu Fashion Week, the largest global fashion event in China. “It was a whirlwind trip, and I was honored to be chosen,” said the designer. For the

international event, Fraser Hart pulled together 30 daytime, cocktail, and evening looks from her Fall 2013 line and past collections. The show was such a hit that the organizers asked her to do a second show. “I had to explain to the models that they had to smile. I don’t want the girls looking miserable wearing my clothing,” she laughed. While there, Hart worked to help build international understanding of the fashion industry. Other participants explored the city while Hart lectured to students at Szechuan College about American versus Chinese markets. “My goal was to help bridge the intangible gap and develop an understanding within the two countries.”

Ever since I was in Helena, Mississippi and had the great pleasure to taste real southern barbecue from a food cart in the street, accompanying the town’s annual summer blues festival, I’ve been hooked. That’s was hands down, the best barbecue I ever had and I’ve been searching for food as good, ever since.

forewarned that the restaurants are noisy with big screen TV’s, neon signs, rock and country music and images of dancing hogs on the walls, which makes the take out options appealing for those who don’t enjoy braving a crowd. For the price, the Southern food and barbecue can’t be beat, and the spare ribs, with either sauce or a dry rub,

Mouth watering northern style ribs, smoked for twelve hours, are drop off the bone tender. Southern style ribs smoked with Memphisribs with their signature rub; it reminds me of Mississippi. Carolina pulled pork shoulder is slow smoked and juicy. Sliced beef brisket, smoked for twelve hours, either lean or marbled, was perfectly done and just about melted in my mouth. Platters come with cornbread and generous portions of sides. I was impressed with the variety and tastiness of all the sides that were offered since there’s a scarcity of vegetables on menus in restaurants in the South. Sweet potato fries, black eyed peas with bacon, pulled pork, wild rice, candied yams with walnuts, collard greens, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes with gravy and macaroni and cheese were all yummy. For those with a hankering for Southern food, there’s Po’ boys,

This very hip American Brasserie located on the lower east side delivers Chef John Keller’s interpretation of classic comfort food that translates into delicious dishes that are perfectly prepared and presented. Mr. Keller strikes the ideal balance with cooking and spicing so as to He calls it keeping it simple; I call it art. Think exceptional cuisine with lower east side prices in a happening, trendy venue and you have the concept for Dinner on Ludlow. Executive chef John Keller, pastry chef Mame Sowe ( formerly of the Hotel on Rivington ) and chef Blair Hanelt ( formerly of Casimer) have teamed up to bring ‘home’ back to the neighborhood. If this is ‘home’, mama was a gourmet chef. This three level eatery housed on the corner of Delancey and Ludlow has a sleek lounge with crystal chandeliers and comfy with retractable roof and outdoor patio offers gorgeous views of the city and the cool sounds of DJ music. The intimate space with soft lighting is perfect for lovers, friends, small groups and hip foodies. Appetizers like bacon and

and the pine nut crusted calamari, butter lettuce, piquillo peppers, avocado, fresh hearts of palm, green goddess dressing are examples of his talent for new ways of combing fresh ingredients, perfectly spiced. The couple across my table were wowed by tuna tartar, smoked herring, avocado, lemon-ginger oil, crispy shallots and the braised chicken meatballs, green apple and brussel sprouts slaw, chili-garlic. Entrees like free range chicken with wild mushroom gravy were tender, juicy and melted in your mouth. Other winners were succulent sea bass with fresh herbs, aged fries and my favorite – The Roast, Chef ’s daily preparation of braises, roasts or stews. For desert, a lemon semifreddo with blood orange sorbet and fennel scented citrus was gastronomic heaven. My friend loved the salted caramel chocolate tart with white chocolate ice cream and chocolate cremoso. Dinner on Ludlow has an excellent selection of wine and beer. However, I confess to being captivated by their signature cocktails such as Hipsters Blood, South of Delancey and Hester Hound – all good. John Keller’s goal is to bring high quality food to the lower east side. Kudos John, but I expect all city dwellers that enjoy good food will be

The Royal Treatment By Christop h er A. Pa p e

Business in New York City is admittedly tough; Aleks Abdurakhmanov does it with aplomb. I sat down with him to learn more about Chelsea Royal Care Pharmacy-his brainchild and successful local business in Manhattan. Resident: Tell me the background of the pharmacy? Aleks Abdurakhmanov: We are a fully functional independently pharmacy that specializes in oncology, HIV, diabetes, hepatitis and many other major diseases. In addition to that, we’re a preferred neighborhood pharmacy that dispenses nonspecialty medications as well. Were a very small, classic apothecary with a big mission and ambition to be of true assistance to everybody. We treat all clients equally and provide royal service and care to absolutely everyone. Our goal is to take the burden off the shoulders of our patients, and we always try to live up to the name of Chelsea Royal Care Pharmacy. At our pharmacy you will always be known, remembered and appreciated. We try to establish a personal relationship with our patients and customers without ever breaking our clients’ anonymity. We want our pharmacist to be your “come to guy” and to be the person to assist you with your health needs, insurance problems and the person to speak to your doctor and other health professionals for your ease of life. Duane Reade, Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens are the big chains - we focus on being small and personal, while providing everything that the big chains offer and much more. Specialty products and hard-to-find products, including items that are ordered upon designated inquiries. Overall, our goal

is to gain a personal and honest relationship with all of our clients. We work hard to complete all prescriptions within 5 minutes of a clients’ arrival time, provide the best prices on medications and offer tremendous discounts to everybody. We give 10% off to Senior Citizens all days of the week, and constantly strive for patients to pay as little as possible-if anything-out of pocket. R: How did you get into the business? AA: Chelsea is one of the most historic and prominent areas of New York City. We love to offer our neighbors a great deal and provide a pharmaceutical and medical service to the people of New York. This is a quiet neighborhood free of the giants and big chains, and we find that our customers prefer a small, intimate, and quality-over-quantity attitude. Our primary goal is the pure satisfaction of our patients and customers. Our grand opening was in 2010. As we move closer to our third anniversary, we see that, slowly but surely, we’re positively impacting the Chelsea community and providing the services and addressing the needs of the people very efficiently, as the people definitely deserve. R: How do you distinguish yourself from the other competitive pharmacies serving New York City. AA: It comes down to customer service. We treat everyone with the utmost respect, compassion and care. We go out of our way for our patients by providing free prescription pick up and delivery for all medicationsto homes, jobs or even patients that are on

vacation here in New York. We even provide free delivery on all of our over-the-counter products. In addition to medications and in store products we provide notary public service, copy and fax services as well. It’s an honor and privilege to serve the entire Chelsea neighborhood and the city of New York. We know that we always have to evolve our services and improve the quality of our work in order to fit the needs of the diverse populations that we serve. R: What kind of specials do you offer to incentivize your customers? AA: We are always working to constantly improve and apply all of our knowledge to our practice, as well as keeping our clients up to date with new services and treatment options. We keep a close and honest relationship with our patients-with the ultimate goal of not having them be forced to pay out of pocket. We are planning on expanding our services and locations around the Chelsea area in order to accommodate more people in New York. With new openings and the expansion of our specialty medications and services, our goal is to stop the monopolization of the specialty medication industry in this city and stop those who are taking advantage of the innocent people by blocking access of specialty treatments to independently

By Ed. Druckman It’s not the advancing gray hair that tells me I’m aging. It isn’t even repeating the mantra “What…what?” if I’m listening to someone with more than two other people talking around them. It’s gas. There…I’ve said it. In my formative years, unlike most male adolescents, I was equally bewildered and enraged at why my old man would simply emit thunder when I could clandestinely emote with virtuoso control. At 20, I could handle gas like a breast; gingerly, but with just enough force to show us both whom was boss. Then gradually my instrument, to extend the metaphor, began to metaphors. But one has to practice. It was there that my performance began to slip…or slip out, like a catcher bobbling a knuckle ball. Initially, I thought it simply an isolated error. Then, one day, I was walking down the sidewalk, making sure no one was less than ten yards behind me (always courtesy), and I parted with what I thought would be a whisper. To my surprise, it turned out to be a windowpane rattler. The poor kid in the Orbit stroller behind me was so scared he spit out his Cheerios. That example was a foreshadow of the ill wind that truly blows no good. Today, my instrument has so betrayed me I won’t even attempt an Evel Knievel like stunt of cajoling one out while I’m in bed as an invited guest. Hard to imagine given the subject matter of this column, I know. But every once in a while that blue moon does shine. I will confess this had me in a bit of a funk, especially when I told my doctor, whose words of consolation were “why do you think they call old men “old farts? You age, you fart more.” Okay, it wasn’t a terminal diagnosis. But did he need to be that blunt? Then, there was an epiphany. I was walking by Pier One at 65th

BBBBBBBBBBBRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAPPP. Even typing it feels satisfying. Have I become my old man, who, perhaps, with each trumpet of methane was saying, “Time is passing. I’m going to make most of it.” Was his clarion call a metaphor that with each tone demanded focus on what matters for the inevitable is neigh? Not exactly the connection I’d hoped to my father, but you have been as eloquent as Dylan Thomas’ “The Force That Through the Green Fuse Drives the Flower” with his “and here’s one for the West Coast” schtick, still both premises are sound. Okay, one is more onomatopoetic. I feel compelled to work through this for a more rigorous answer, but I may be so egotistical as to compare myself to Dylan Thomas. My apologies to Al Gore for this inconvenient toot and taking pleasure in contributing to climate change, but I must stand, or lift, by my old man.

Pop, this one’s for you.
