We are so excited for a very merry February. In fact, we are elated! So many things are happening! And I’m so happy to share them with you. Stay tuned because we have even bigger things in the new feature, which I can’t talk about now, but which are all good things! For this month, we are honored to have Tony Award winner, Victoria Clark as our cover story. Not only is she glamorous, humorous and down-to-earth, but she is one of the most talented women on the American stage today. We were lucky to do an exclusive photo shoot with her at the Plaza Athenee and we thank them for the use of their stunning suite. We also have an interview with the new Miss America who is a resident of Brooklyn! She is beautiful and we are so happy to have her represent the Empire State; take a look at the interview, I’m sure you’ll learn more about her than you knew before. One of the biggest achievements under my tenure has been the securing of Joe Alexander and famed photographer Patrick McMullen who are now contributing our new social column called “Around the Town.” This month features Uma Thurman, Cameron Diaz and many other familiar faces. I thank them and know that his column will continue to expand! We are also proud to showcase a new real estate section. Although it’s in its infancy now, we have major plans on growing it. After all, we are called Resident magazine. On the same note, our family section is quite strong, with our roundup of the best children’s summer camps and how social media affects children, we know we have the best camps represented and hope that you take advantage of the hard work we’ve put into it. Of course, we have a very robust travel section including stories on the luxury river boat cruise line, Uni World, Playa del Carmen, Budapest and other wonderful destinations. In addition, we have a great spread on great weekend getaways. Fashion week is upon us and to that we’ve showcased some of our favorite designers. And fashion is another area in which we are making a big push! Combined with George Brescia, we will continue to bring you evermore of the Lastly, we are SUPER excited to announce plans for a food festival on Sunday, March 24, 2013 from 1pm to 5pm. Teaming up with Toshi of Flat Iron Hotel food related event. While we may be new at this, Toshi is an expert at throwing events and we know this will be very successful. A Lover of the Stage By Christopher A. Pape Photos by Billy Bustamante Broadway is a tough business but Victoria Clark makes it look easy. A native of Texas (with all the charm that entails) she came to our fair city to be a director. One thing led to another and she is now one of the most acclaimed stage actresses working today. Having stared in and won a Tony for The Light in the Piazza she is beloved by a wide swath of the American theater going public. As a followup to her success in Piazza, she was nominated for a Tony in Sister Act and is currently staring in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, which is one of the hottest tickets in town. Victoria sat down with us; the whole time she was gracious, down-to-earth and very funny. Resident: Tell us about Rodgers and Hammerstiein’s Cinderella…what drew you to the production? Victoria Clark: Two main reasons: #1: THE PEOPLE INVOLVED: At this point in my career, it’s all about the working relationships. I have been lucky enough to play all kinds of women and characters, so now at this point, I am looking to work with collaborators who inspire me and make me better. The creative artists I work with every day on Cinderella are doing just that. First of all, our director, Mark Brokaw is brilliant. I have admired his work for some time, and I understanding, imaginative and his visual sense is uncanny--he has a tremendous vision of how the show should move. Douglas Carter Beane the fantastic playwright is our book writer. Douglas and I met doing Sister Act on Broadway, and he is a good friend and a very funny person. He has reimagined this story and made it very alive and funny. When I heard that Laura Osnes was set to play Cinderella, I knew I wanted to work with her. She is an old soul with the hugest heart in the world. Seeing her every night in our scenes is the greatest gift. This design team: William Ivey Long (costumes), Paul Huntley (wigs), Anna Louizos (set), Kenneth Posner (lighting), Nevin Steinberg (sound). They are all singular artists at the peak of their careers, and each iconic. Their contribution to this production is inestimable and they are expert collaborators. I adore them all. Trust me, no one has seen a fairy tale story come to life like this. And lastly, our music department led by our music supervisor and arranger David Chase and conductor Andy Einhorn are taking this delicious Rodgers and Hammerstein score and adding some unknown gems from that famous songwriting team’s catalogue, and creating a brand new show. It is a new score containing an old score in a way. It is unique. And of course everyone from the Rodgers and Hammerstein organization led by Ted Chapin and Bruce Pomahac is a genius. I have never worked with this many amazing artists at the same time. I am in Heaven.
Roosevelt who said, “do one thing every day that scares you?” Well, here it is. Now it is my favorite part of the show. R: You’re known for musical theater, having won a Tony in 2005, what makes musical theater different from television/movies? VC: Well, it›s the live audience, most obviously. After the design, rehearsals, technical and make each performance completely different. R: What role are you playing? VC: I am playing the role of Marie. She is Cinderella’s friend from the village; she is an out there is more to her than meets the eye... R: How did you get into theater? VC: I started as a director. I came to NYU’s graduate musical theater writing program to be a director, and presented so much of the writers’ original material that a casting director gave me an audition for a replacement in Sunday in the Park with George. I didn’t really think I had a shot, so I went. I got it. It was only my second Equity job. Once people saw a Broadway credit on my resumé, they assumed I was an actor, and the doors just kept opening. I wasn’t planning on being an actor, but it came and found me. R: Favorite role (s) you’ve yet to play? VC: I am asked that question all the time, and I don’t have any burning desire to do a role that already exists. I would rather create new characters.

our childhood away. And that endless sky. There is something in that sky that just makes you thankful to be alive. R: What do you think of New York’s musical theater scene? What makes it the best? VC: I am not an expert on everything that is happening now. But having lived here for 30 years, I do know New York is the cultural capital of the world, and of course the best city in the world for musicals. Just before 8:00 pm, I like to think of all the amazing artists that are all warming up to give a performance: actors, singers, musicians, dancers, you name it. It is mind-boggling. All the best training for musicals is here in the United States, and the talent just keeps getting more and more impressive. I think that keeps the quality of the product very high. I would like to see a return of great writing for the voice to musicals, Broadway musicals in particular. Adam Guettel, Ricky Ian Gordon, Jeanine Tesori, these are all composers who know how to write for the voice. R: How was it to grow up in Texas? VC: Sublime; it was a very happy place to grow up. I was blessed with an incredible family who is loving and very funny. And my best friend is hilarious, now an executive producer in television. She and I laughed
R: What does it mean to be a New Yorker? VC: I have no idea! I guess I could qualify as a New Yorker now that I have lived here all my adult life. I have learned that most New Yorkers feel they are citizens of the world and that global awareness unites us in a are here. It is an intensely exciting place to live. You can feel the energy just bubbling up from the sidewalks and streets. I also think we have the most beautiful parks in the world. My son says that Central Park is his front yard, and Riverside is his back yard. He was boasting about that at age 4. He was already feeling proud then. R: What section of the city do you live in? What do you like about it? VC: I live on the Upper West side. It is all kids, and families, and students, and dogs. It is very neighborhoody. I have been here almost all of 30 years. I also lived in Hudson Heights for about 5 years. That was also beautiful. I had an amazing view of the Hudson River and the Palisades. I’m so happy to be where I’m at. R: Any pets?
VC: Yes, does my teenage son count? Not counting him, one Golden Retriever age 10, and a black rescue cat who is 8. R: George Brescia styled our photo shoot and he writes a fashion column every month for the Resident, isn’t he great? VC: Yes, not only is he an amazing stylist, he is a rare person with a huge heart, and he is also a beautiful actor and singer! R: What charities are you involved with?

I am also very active at my church St. Paul and St. Andrew United Methodist Church on West End Avenue and 86th St. But you know, actors work for free all the time. This entire profession is a kind of calling. We get used to working for nothing or for very little, and to making our contributions by giving our time to worthwhile artistic endeavors. And then every now and then, the gift of a wonderful Broadway play or musical comes along, and those times are very special. Then we feel truly blessed.

Having cruised on ocean liners more than my fair share of times, a river cruise was an idea that had never crossed my mind. It wasn’t until I was afforded the opportunity to set sail down the Danube through the small towns and historic cities of Germany and Austria that I realized what a hidden treasure river cruising truly is! Although the sky was gray, the air cold, and the ground covered with snow, we were just so excited to be there and couldn’t wait to get started. As we approached the canal there were several ships docked. We wondered which one was ours. To our pleasant surprise it was the best looking ship there. Shinny and glowing under the gray sky it brought a smile to our faces. As we headed toward the ship, we saw a group of people waiting outside the ship to help us. One of which was the Hotel Manager, Steff Rau, who we
would come to call friend and who always went above and beyond to ensure that not just my daughter and I but that all the guests were comfortable and well taken care of. We were escorted onto the ship without a care. Our luggage was whisked away and all we were asked to do was to relax in the Blue Danube Lounge, have a bite to eat and something hot or cold to drink. Before we knew it we were escorted to our stateroom. The room was bright and cheery with sliding glass doors that would afford us a wonderful view as we sailed down the river. The ship had just recently undergone a refurbishing and our redecorated stateroom’s decor was modern and relaxing with an extremely comfortable queen sized bed. All the with Internet access, cable programming, movies, and music on demand. The bathroom featured everything you might need ranging from beautifully fragranced L’Occitane bodycare products to a highpowered blow dryer. Now it was time to explore the ship that we would be calling home for the next week. enjoyed a wonderful buffet lunch. Greeted by the Restaurant Manager, Roberto da Silva, with an engaging smile, we knew he was there to try to accommodate our every request. All meals, and we were served three
a day, were overseen by Executive Chef Milos Mucka and least I say that he did a fantastic job with his selections as well as his execution of every meal served. The dining room was situated at the ship’s stern with windows all around. It was very well placed with all the tables having access to the view and the prep area being in the center of the room. It was carefully thought out not unlike every detail on this boutique cruise ship. Again the decor was lovely always giving the feeling of relaxed eloquence. Of course, it was also thanks to the staff of waiters and chefs that made it even more enjoyable. It seemed as though they did everything in their power to ensure that the guests had the best of times and all their needs were met. They even came to know us all by name and welcomed us daily with a personal greeting. They were fantastic! Back to our stateroom we freshened up for Hotel Manager and Cruise Manager. Back to the lounge we mingled with some of the guests and at 6pm we were welcomed by our Captain, Michael Hofmann, or Captain Mike as he prefers to be called. We were given all the safety instructions and assured that we were in good hands and no harm would come our way. Steff also greeted us and then introduced us to Ann Smets, the Cruise Manager who would be in charge

of all aspects of our shore excursions and entertainment program. She was a wealth of information and simply stated, utterly delightful. At 7PM we were back in the Palace Restaurant feasting on another superb meal. Anxious to start sightseeing and going to the Christmas Markets that abound this time of year, we headed back to our stateroom. down for sleeping and a chocolate on each the Daily Program, which outlined what we would be doing the next day. This listed both included and optional activities. Nothing was left to chance and the attention to detail was outstanding, as this program would also give us weather information and a synopsis of the history and culture of the town we would be visiting. At last we awakened, prepared for a hearty breakfast, mingled with some of our shipmates and by 8:45 AM we are driven into Nuremberg by coach with a local guide. Not only was he extremely knowledgeable but downright hilarious as well. The tour proved to be very enlightening and entertaining. Of course, Nuremberg is known for the infamous Nazi rallies and later on for the trials but Nuremberg is much more than and of the Holy Roman Empire. It also boasts a castle with an enormous mote that transports you back to medieval times. Once the guided tour was done we were taken to the Christmas Market in the town square. It was nothing that we had ever experienced before. The crafts were beautiful, the food was great and the people were...well it was just perfect. We came to understand that a decades long rivalry has existed between Nuremberg and our next stop, Regensburg - who makes a time being, we decided to be the judges of that. Later in the day, we had the choice of an optional tour to a WWII documentation center or a coach ride back to the Christmas Market. We decided to stay on board, relax, and get ready for the Captain’s Diner that evening, for which we had been invited to dine at the captain’s table. To say the least, we were very pleased to receive an honor such as this. The evening started out with a lavish cocktail party including a welcome by the captain followed by a port talk from Ann. As there were only 120-140 passengers on board we also took the opportunity to get acquainted with some more of our fellow travelers. It certainly was a diverse group with passengers from around the world. In fact, we grew so fond of a couple from Australia, Fiona, and Ed, that we extended an open invitation to visit one another during our future travels.

After a very enjoyable cocktail hour, we made our way to the Palace Restaurant for dinner with our captain. Seated at our table along with Captain Mike was Hotel Manager, Steff, Ann our Cruise Manager, a couple from South African, and a woman from Canada. The food, wine, and service were excellent, the company was superb, and we got to know the people who would be in charge of our care and trip for the next week. It was a dinner we will never forget. We arrived in Regensburg early the next morning. To our delight we found that the combination of sausage, sauerkraut, and sweet mustard served on freshly baked rolls blew all other competition out of the water! Of course it did have a lot more than that to offer as it is the fourth largest city in Bavaria and one of the best-preserved historic cities in Germany. That evening we set sail for Deggendorf where we would board a coach that took us through the snow covered Bavarian Forest with a stop in a small village for a horse drawn carriage ride in the mountains. Our tour also included a visit to a hand blown glass workshop before making the scenic trip back on the coach to meet up with the ship in Passau. Another medieval city located on the banks of the river, Passau was enchanting. Next day we were off to Linz, Austria, chosen Capital of Culture. It is a beautiful city and well deserving of the title. After a day of sightseeing, we headed back on board for our daily port talk with Ann followed by dinner. We then set sail at midnight for the captivating town of Durnstein. Upon awakening the next morning, we found ourselves in the Wachau Region, with a stretch of winding river and vine-covered hillsides. The scenery was breathtaking, even in the dead of winter with castles on hilltops and the sun gleaming down on the river. We were enthralled. We docked in Durnstein and took a walking tour of this town of 800 inhabitants. It is a post card perfect town, seemingly untouched by modern civilization. It was fabulous and a place we’d love to revisit one day. Back on the ship, we headed to Vienna, our last stop on this wonderful journey. There aren’t enough adjectives to describe the city of Vienna. Being a native New Yorker it takes a lot to impress me but believe me Vienna did just that! It is old and charming yet young and sophisticated all at the same time. Like New York, you can never tire of visiting. So much to see, so much to do, so much to experience. Alas, our journey was coming to an end. We would have one last diner with our new friends and off we would go to our homes with

As Americans swoon over Downton Abbey, Kitty Pilgrim examines the Anglo-American connection on a visit to a Scottish castle once owned by President Eisenhower.
On a transatlantic voyage, eastbound from “Culzean Castle.” The ocean liner, Queen returning to Southampton and Americans making the “crossing.” My nightly dinner companions, a young couple from Glasgow, were hoping to tempt me into making an excursion to Scotland by listing various points of interest. “Have you ever heard of Eisenhower’s castle?” the man asked one evening. “You mean President Eisenhower?” They informed me that the Scottish people gave the former U.S. General a castle as a gift, to thank him for his service during World War II. I had to admit; I had never heard of it, but their description sounded spectacular. A short time later I had an opportunity to visit the historic site. I was traveling to Edinburgh to research locations for my novel, The Stolen Chalice, and was accompanied by my mother. The topic of the “Eisenhower Castle” came up, and suddenly we were both enthusiastic to visit the vacation home of an inspiring War II, and I was looking for a new interesting location for my thriller novels.

Making inquiries at the concierge desk of the Balmoral Hotel, we discovered that the castle was in Ayrshire, a mere two-and-ahalf-hour drive away. The grounds are open all year, and we are told that the National Trust for Scotland maintains the 600 acres of Culzean as a wilderness park for hikers and weekend guests. Tours of the interior of the castle are only available during the summer months. This being late October, Culzean (pronounced Cull-AINE) Castle was closed for the season. Sensing our disappointment, a phone call was made to see if something could be arranged. We didn’t have high hopes, but the manager of the estate Paul Pomfret was very accommodating. Rather than turn us away, he offered to give us a personal guided tour that President Eisenhower used as a private residence. Accommodations are available for the night should we choose to stay, and the staff will provide tea and dinner and also breakfast the next day.

Scarcely believing our luck, we set out immediately. The drive is straight across Scotland from one coast to the other. We take the scenic route, A-71, and our rental car creeps along the two-lane highway, meandering through picturesque villages and past sheep-dotted pastures. We are rained upon periodically, but it’s a gentle drizzle, like mist coming off the sea. By early afternoon we start to see signs for the estate. Driving through the stone archways, we are instantly transported to the kind of a the quintessential country estate. Beautifully groomed parkland stretches out on either side of our car, a thick bramble of woods goes on for miles. We follow a circuitous driveway past formal gardens and various stone outbuildings. But nothing prepares us for the last turn, when the stunning promontory of coastline and beach come into view. There are majestic stone battlements like something out
of romantic novel, with the waves dashing the rocks and a vast expanse of turbulent sea. We are warmly welcomed, our luggage whisked away and we are invited to select which bedroom we would like to use. Walking through the various rooms, Eisenhower’s own bedroom is offered as an option. My mother looks at me with surprise and delight. Of course, we would like to sleep in the actual Eisenhower Suite, the one he used when he came here to stay. Feeling like visiting royalty, we settle in, ogling the enormous bath, the immense bedroom and dressing room. Outside the windows, the Firth of Clyde is stormy, but on good days the coast of Ireland is visible across the water. The suite is decorated in of Eisenhower on the mantle. But we cannot tarry; daylight is waning. So we immediately set out for a frigid walk about the grounds, the formal gardens, swan pond, the clock tower and high cliffs, whipped by the bracing

Pouring a dram, we have the thrill of raising a glass to the famous general right in his own living room. My mother reminisces about his pivotal role as Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe. All around is memorabilia, photos, books and some of the Eisenhower’s personal honors and awards on the walls. accompanied by his wife Mamie and found time to visit often, including once during his
States. I’m sure he loved it as much as we did. On the way to bed, we noticed a painting he apparently his doctor had suggested art as an antidote to stress. We are bid goodnight by the pleasant staff, with the promise of a tour of the historic rooms on the following morning. We awake early, ready for another day of discovery. At 8AM we learn just how big a Scottish breakfast can be: porridge, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, buttered toast and marmalade, baked beans, fried potatoes, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, fruit compote, juice and coffee.

Remembering Budapest By Bob & Sandy Nesoff Winter on the shores of the Danube River in Budapest can be especially cold. The wind whips downstream over the waterway between the Buda and Pest sections bringing a bone-chilling frost that even those wrapped in furs and layered clothing cannot escape. The winter of 1944-45 was especially cold and the sight of more than 1,000 men, women and children standing, naked, on the edge of the Danube’s banks, shivering as the wind bit into their uncovered skin, was jarring.

chills to their shivering. The Arrow Cross members ordered the prisoners to hold hands and move even closer to the edge of the embankment. The war was coming to a close. It was obvious even to the most ardent Nazi sympathizer that they had lost and soon the Americans, Russians and other allies would be marching through their streets. Vengeance would soon follow from those they had oppressed and
their job now was to minimize that ability for retribution. Ammunition was low as supplies were almost non-existent so an expedient method had to be employed. With the prisoners gripping each others hands, the Arrow Cross walked up and down the line, shooting every third or fourth person. As the dead fell into the person on either side whose hands they held tightly. Those who weren’t dead before they hit the water soon were as the chill of hypothermia claimed their lives. Clothing was disposed of but shoes were a valuable commodity and they were saved. Today one of the most moving memorials to those tragic and horrible days sits on the Pest side of the Danube, a stark reminder of man’s cruelty to his fellow man. Some 60 pairs of shoes, bronze or metal sit on the Pest bank facing the river. Strangers stroll by, some hardly glancing at the footwear crafted in the style of the 1940s. Others stare curiously, not knowing that they represent. We found them to be very moving.
The Uniworld Cruise line’s ship, River Princess, sits on the Buda side of the Danube within sight of the monument. While it is not on the tour agenda, buses carrying the passengers slow as they pass the shoes, the driver providing an explanation. Some take the rather long walk from quayside across the city’s famed Chain Bridge and along the bank to get a closer look. None ever return to the River Princess unmoved. Uniworld offers an option tour in Budapest, “Jewish Budapest,” that passes the memorial and goes into the heart of the old Jewish Section on the Pest side. Interestingly, perhaps half or more of the tour participants are not Jewish. They show an interested and reverence for what was and what could have been. The cruisers are taken on a short walk through the sector and points of interest are indicated. But without doubt the highlight of the trip is the Grand Synagogue that has somehow escaped the brutality of the Nazis and the Arrow Cross. The synagogue is still an active religious institution although the number of
congregants has been seriously diminished from the “bad times” until today. It is called the most “beautiful Catholic synagogue in the world.” The reason is immediately apparent to any visitor. The interior design would be approved by any bishop who had commissioned a church to be built and it is unlike virtually any other synagogue in the world. The synagogue is laid out much as the interior of any great church. The pulpit, instead of being in the middle of the interior or at the front and center, is raised with a spiral staircase leading to it. Along side the building is a garden with headstones. However, make sure to visit the rear of the synagogue. There a metal tree in the shape of an inverted menorah stands, on its leaves are engraved the names of thousands of the victims of the Holocaust. Yards away stands the house in which Theodore Herzl, the founder of the Zionist movement was born. The government is hard at work today in an effort to distance itself and its people from

A Jeffersonian Retreat for Presidents’ Day:

Last fall, I participated in a sterling six week seminar on “Union, Race, and Nation: Creating the Federal Republic, 1776-1801,” organized by the Institute for Constitutional History at the New York Historical Society, where I joyfully reverted from being professor to student. The seminar was led by Harvard Law Professor/Pulitzer Prize (History) winner Annette Gordon-Reed, author of The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family (W.W. Norton, 2009) and Professor Peter Onuf, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professor in the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia, one of the editors of The Revolution of 1800: Democracy, Race, and the New Republic (University of Virginia Press, 2002) (Onuf ’s co-editors were James Horn and Jan Ellen Lewis). There was, of course, focus upon Thomas Jefferson. Thus, when I went on a recent road trip in Virginia, I pointedly visited Poplar Forest, Jefferson’s “villa retreat” home. Completed in 1809 (when Jefferson was 66), it was a place where Jefferson went for the next 14 years, spending weeks or

After Jefferson’s death, the house was sold and fell into disrepair, from which it had to be rescued in the 1980s, by a that it was previously designated by the Secretary of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark. This work-in-progress restoration is open to visitors, who are invited to share in Jefferson’s original architectural genius (creating a bed from which each side enters a different room of the relatively small house) to the process of reclaiming the building and its details (such turn” and walk). Intriguingly, as the house and landscape are restored, docents provide detailed information about the original home (and Jefferson’s architectural vision) and the restoration effort. These are shown

Not that many years ago, but in what seems like several lifetimes past, the great vacation escape was either to the Catskills or Poconos with some of the most famous retreats waiting with open arms. Today most are gone and little remains but fond memories of Grosinger’s, the Nevele in the Catskills borscht belt and Caesar’s and Mt. Airy in the Poconos honeymoon belt. Today Caesar’s is gone, so is Grosinger’s, the Nevele is closed, fenced in and overgrown with weeds. But in their places have arisen modern new resorts with amenities the old hotels could not have imagined in their wildest dreams. Some have been forward looking enough to weather the precipitous drop in visitors and come out stronger; Woodloch Resort and Mt. Airy in Pennsylvania and Villa Roma in New York are examples. Fresh into the New Year, 2013 has greeted New Yorkers with brutally cold weather and an equally painful apartment rental climate. While the rest of the country works its way through a gradual, steadily improving economy, here in Manhattan we tend to exhibit more extreme reactions. The rental market peaked in late 2007, long after the rest of the nation›s housing markets were showing signs of weakness. Afterwards, the financial crisis hit New York City hard, sharply dropping rents and also catalyzing entirely new paradigm shifts in the local real estate market. Landlords large and small offered incentives from free rent to paid broker fees. Renters took the upper hand when negotiating lease renewals, given the credible threat of moving out for better deals.

The real estate broker community saw the biggest shakeup as the economy strained longstanding relationships between landlords, brokers, and agents. Many landlords, desperate to fill rising vacancies, launched their own internal leasing teams and marketing campaigns. Individual real estate agents, faced with declining volumes and lower commission levels, demanded more assistance from their sponsoring brokerage firms. The most disgruntled agents simply left their firms to partake in the largest of all revolutionary movements: the rise of the 100% commission firms. While a few high-commission firms had been around before the crisis, the game-changing critical mass of agents migrated in 2009 and 2010, thriving in a perfect storm of adverse conditions for traditional brokerage structures.

n January 12, 2013 our own Brooklyn resident and Miss New York, Mallory Hagan was crowned Miss America. Originally from Alabama, this incredibly driven 23 year old had childhood dreams of being Miss America and made the move to the Big Apple to of beauty and advertising. Resident had a chance to chat with the gorgeous and talented Hagan to see what she loves most about living as a New Yorker and to take a glimpse into her whirlwind tour as Miss America 2013. How has living in New York prepared you for your duties as Miss America? Everyone knows that New York has such diverse cultures and communities and there’s so many different types of people here; I think that’s what’s really prepared me to be Miss America. I’ll be travelling all over the country and meet all different types of people, but I’ll also be travelling internationally as well. I’ll be in Canada and in Europe, just being a New Yorker will make it so much easier because I’ve already been exposed to it. Who was running?

I grew up in Alabama and I saw Heather Whitestone be crowned, Miss America disability, she had hearing loss in one ear and I remembered thinking if she can be crowned with a disability then I can be crowned. It was that beacon of hope as a kid and that person who was your idol in the organization. Then I saw another Miss Alabama be crowned Miss America in my of inspirational people in my life. What are some of your favorite places in NYC? I love, love, love the Highline, I love to spend my summers there relaxing and also I spend a lot of time in Prospect Park which is my neighborhood. Of course I love food, Burger & Barrel is one of my favorite restaurants, the chef has won NYC’s Burger bash three years in a row, its really great. I love going to the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Natural History. There’s so much to do you can literally do something different here everyday forever! How did you decide on your cause to champion? Stop It Now! Child Sexual Abuse is actually
my personal platform and it’s something that has affected many of the women in my family and I felt that since I have this box to stand on I should try to create some education and awareness around it and I think that I’m proof that prevention is possible. As a child it was a priority for people to make sure that I understood that my body is my body and I have the right to say no to anything. I think if we empower kids with that message I think they will be able to resist possible abuse in the future as well. As Miss America I’m an ambassador for the Children’s Miracle Network so we work nationwide for CMN national hospitals and as an organization we’ve raised over $6 million for CMN and visit all of their hospitals. I’m also going to Washington DC to meet with Arnie Duncan for STEM to promote education with the Miss America Organization. What is your beauty regime? Artistry has been such a great sponsor to the Miss America Organization and awhile ago they gave us their balancing system in a travel pack. This is great for my daily routine. I also use their crème luxe eye cream it has caffeine in it so for early mornings it really helps to brighten my eyes and make me appear more awake and
up to 15 years younger. Its preventative for me, many women in my family have I love their light up lip gloss, it’s such a conversation starter as much as it is great for your face and look. It’s great to be at a party and whip it out. Artistry has great products and their new spring collection is beautiful and beautifully packaged. What are your New Year’s resolutions? I have to be really honest, I try not to make New Year’s resolutions because I think that resolutions are just an excuse to prolong something you should’ve done a long time ago. My resolution is to not to have a resolution. What are your plans after your role as Miss America? My goal is to use my $50,000 Amway scholarship to continue my education at the Fashion Institute. Ironically enough I’d like to study Advertising, Marketing and Communications with an emphasis in cosmetics and fragrance marketing. This is a great yearlong internship with Artistry and I really hope that it’s something I can

Taking on an Asian theme, Monique Lhullier’s dream like collection seemed inspired by the dreamy water illustrations of famed Japanes artist Masami Teraoki in an ocean palette of turquoise and navy. She wove this theme throughout her constructed silhouettes that featured decidedly feminine accents like a pencil skirt or skinny chiffon gowns.
Resurrecting the glamour and lifestyle of Old Hollywood, each season Badgley Mischka are inspired by a cinematic masterpiece of that bygone era. This season was from the 1935 version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Mixing their contemporary collection Mark & James along with their couture namesake brand, their collection played to their usual themes of romance, drama, and glamour using a warm palette of blush and golden toned hues mixed with neutral pastels like seafoam and cream.

Nanette Lepore is known for her bold color palette and composition of varying prints to comprise uniquely feminine frocks and separates. This season she was inspired by the patterns from porcelain from the Charlottenberg Palace in Berlin that mixed in a sorbet pastel palette, was a central theme throughout the collection and accented by gingham and paired with handwoven accessories.
Taking cues from strong willed women warriors with harness adornments and gladiator platforms, Herve Leger has been taking the bandage dress to a new dimension. Inspired by the patterns and asymmetry from quiltmaking, Lubov Azria’s used tonal geometric patterns, appliques, and intricate woven macramé to add texture and color to the traditional body con silhouettes. Other details that play on balance and form such as angular and architectural cutouts, color bottom of these short and sexy dresses added a fresh from the pure bandage themes.
Downtown favorite Rebecca Minkoff knows what today’s ‘it’ girl wants. All That’s Golden Doesn’t Necessarily Glitter By Barry Bassis What is it with the Golden plays on Broadway? Is Glenn Beck picking the shows this season? First there was “Golden Child” and then “Golden Boy” and “Golden Age.” I missed the first but saw the other two on successive nights. My verdict is one-up, one-down. Terrence McNally has previously demonstrated his flair for playwriting and his fascination with opera, with a specific focus on Maria Callas. She was the protagonist of “Master Class” and the title of “Lisbon Traviata” refers to a character’s obtaining of a rare live recording of a performance the diva gave in Portugal. Callas doesn’t appear in “Golden Age” and she is not mentioned since it takes place a century before she was born. However, her voice is heard in the background along with tenor Giuseppe di Stefano on a recording and that’s the problem. I don’t like people talking during an opera performance, especially when the dialogue is not that interesting. “Golden Age” at the Manhattan Theatre Club takes place backstage at the opening night performance of “I Puritani” by Vincenzo Bellini in Paris during 1835. The lead singers--soprano Giulia Grisi (Dierdre Friel), baritone Antonio Tamburini (Lorenzo Pisoni), tenor Giovanni Battista Rubini (Eddie Kaye Thomas), and bass Luigi Lablache (Ethan Phillips), who all became known as the Puritani Quartet because of their roles in this opera, are afraid their rivals will turn up in the audience. In fact, in the case of Battista, he is in love
with Grisi and he fears that she is in love with another famous tenor. The nervous Bellini (Lee Pace) appears with his patron/ lover Francesco Florimo (Will Rogers) and worries about the opinions of fellow Italian composers Rossini (George Morfogen) and Donizetti. He takes snipes at them (outside their hearing) but also expresses some admiration of their works (for example, the latter’s aria “Una Furtiva Lagrima,” which he attempts to sing). During the course of the opera, there are two backstage marriage proposals, some low comedy and various shouting matches. Is it likely that opera singers abuse their voices in this fashion moments before they set foot onstage or that a stage manager would not tell them all to pipe down or step outside? Legendary diva Maria Malibran (Bebe Neuwirth) trades insults with Grisi. McNally attempts to turn Malibran (who died at age 28) into Callas by having her express fears about her fading vocal powers and perhaps turn Bellini into Callas’ Violetta by having him cough as a precursor to his untimely demise (caused in reality from an intestinal ailment). The actors, directed by Walter Bobbie, do their sometimes considerable best (especially Pace and Neuwirth), but the play is not one of McNally’s better efforts.

The Sixties are Back in Jazz and Folk Music By Barry Bassis Recent CD reissues highlight the fact that vast amounts of first-class music by American musicians lie in vaults around the world, some never before made available in this country.
“Big Bandbands Live: Duke Ellington Orchestra” (on SWR) is a recording of a previously unreleased 1967 Stuttgart concert. This edition of the band had some musicians (such as alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges, trumpeter Cootie Williams and baritone saxophonist Harry Carney) who had been with the Duke on and off since the 1920’s and Lawrence Brown (from the 1930’s). Ellington wrote specifically with his musicians in mind. The importance of this album is that, after the brief opening-the band’s theme “Take the A-Train” by Ellington’s long-time collaborator Billy Strayhorn--the rest of the concert was comprised of lesser known but worthy pieces by Ellington and Strayhorn plus Raymond Fol’s “Salome.” After each number, Duke repeated the name of the soloist, as the audience applauded. There are noteworthy turns by Williams on “Tutti for Cootie” and “The Shepherd,” Cat Anderson on “Salome,” drummer Rufus Jones on “Fixx,” Carney on “A Chromatic Love Affair,” the lyrical Johnny Hodges on “Freakish Lights” and Paul Gonsalves on “Knob Hill.”
The “Legends Live: Dizzy Gillespie Quintet” on SWR was recorded in Stuttgart and Frankfurt in 1961. Dizzy was a pioneer of bebop and the incorporation of Afro-Cuban rhythms into jazz. He began the concert with a tip of the hat to Ellington with a 16-minute rendition of Duke’s 1928 composition, “The Mooche.” Gillespie didn’t try to reproduce the style of the original with its clarinet and muted trumpet. Rather, he and his group performed it in a modernist style. The pianist was Lalo Shifrin (who subsequently composed the theme from “Mission Impossible”). The underappreciated Leo Wright played alto sax and flute, Bob Cunningham was on bass and Mel Lewis was the drummer. The audience got to hear Dizzy’s funny scatting, as well as his Latin-tinged “Con Alma” and a high-flying rendition of “I Can’t Get Started.”
Peter, Paul and Mary were the most popular and influential folk group of the 1960’s. They were politically committed, initially to the cause of integration—they performed at the 1963 March on Washington—and then the anti-war movement. “Live in Japan, 1967” (on Rhino) was recorded in Tokyo and Kyoto. The group matched superb musicianship with an ear for important songwriters. Their recordings introduced to a generation such talents as Bob Dylan, Laura Nyro, John Denver and Fred Neil. Pieces by all of them are performed on this set along with their hits, “Puff the Magic Dragon” and “Lemon Tree” as well as tributes to their predecessors Woody Guthrie and the Weavers. Peter Yarrow has said that he believes that this is the best live recording the group made.
Those who know Paul Winter only from his Consort and Winter Solstice concerts will be surprised that he started as a straightahead jazzman, with a short-lived group in the early 1960’s. They may also be surprised at how swinging his bands were during that period. The new double-CD set, “Count Me In” includes a recording made in 1962 at the Kennedy White House; in fact, this was the first jazz group to perform there. The music was eclectic, ranging from Bach and Brazilian sounds to cool jazz and a piece by Lalo Schifrin from his “Suite Gillespiana.” The second disc ends with arrangements of folk pieces and a soulful version of “We Shall Overcome.” The sextet disbanded but its members (including Chuck Israels, Ben Riley, Cecil McBee, and Jeremy Steig) went on to important work in other groups.

Forbidden Broadway: Alive and Kicking is back and as good as ever. Under the directorship of Gerard Alessandri, the famous musical has circled the globe; from around the States, to London, and to Manila. Now it has come home to the city

This is a musical that features parodies of some of Broadway’s most famous names, including Bernadette Peters, Matthew Broderick and Catherine Zeta Jones to name a few. Alessandri and his cast have been changing the show ever since its birth in 1982 to keep up with the names and ensure that they target all of Broadway’s contemporary stars. A light-hearted to see Alessandri’s musical, including the aforementioned stars that are willing to laugh at themselves. Speaking with Alessandri was a blast and musicals, from dramatic ones like Once to family-oriented ones like Newsies and also some of the old favorites like “Anyhting Goes” and “A Little Night Music.” The idea for this unique musical came about thirty years ago now and was made for Alessandri and his friends to showcase their talents, which they did with great success.
The show quickly became too in-demand for Palsson’s Supper Club (now the Triad Theatre) and moved to Theatre East. Since then, the musical has received international acclaim, having been showcased in four continents; the most notable foreign venue of which is London’s Menier Chocolate Factory. The show is currently nominated for nine Ovation awards in Los Angeles to go with its Special Tony® Award as well as Drama Critics’ Circle, Obie, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Drama League, and Lucille Lortel Awards. The cast is small but talented, with Natalie Charlé Ellis, Scott Richard Foster, Jenny Lee Stern and Marcus Stevens, and with David Caldwell on Piano. In the past, this musical has been a platform for actors to elevate the careers; previous casts have included the likes of Jason Alexander, Chloe Webb, Barbara Walsh, Brian Batt, Dee Hoty and Daniel Reichard. Social Networking is the most important communication channel among our teens and tweens. If you are not connected to the world they live in, it is hard to effectively parent them. Social media trends are accelerating and exploding and their usage is directly correlated to how our tweens and teens feel about themselves and act towards others. Let’s face it, we are raising ‘the ithumb generation’ and they are creating norms faster than they can type a text. I am a huge fan of electronic devices and using them. I have a phone, an ipad, a kindle and a nook. I text and have a twitter, fb, pinterest, linkedin, and Instagram account. I’m not super active on all of them but have connected with so many people from my past and present. Most importantly, these are my defenses in an increasingly complicated electronicsoriented world. As a mom, I already have a hard time keeping up with my children and their busy schedules. Trying to raise great kids is exhausting. I am stressed and tired and the idea of one more giant issue to address is daunting. But becoming social media savvy social media, I can directly impact three things related to them: safety, common sense
and good manners associated with their use. One of my children is on facebook (fb) and all four are on Instagram. Several are on snapchat and other add-ons to Instagram. They are not on twitter and have no desire to be. My children argue over who is following them and desire to collect followers. I have a rule that they must accept me as a follower and I need to know their usernames and passwords. Seems like common sense but I have to go further. There is a trend in every playground. The kids are collecting ‘likes’ and ‘followers’ and ‘friends’. Seems innocent but we need to watch. There are apps to see who unfollows or unfriends and this is creating drama on the playground. The kids are using these to bully others or make a child feel isolated or as if he/she doesn’t have enough friends. Kids are gaining status now by the number of friends, followers, and likes they have. It is a form of competition and the new barometer of popularity. Kids are using the accounts to include and exclude people. They are including the wrong people to increase their friends and likes. They are excluding peers as a power has on the target. They also post pictures, which can make them targets. They can post a photo of their front door, a picture where the wearer has a school t-shirt on.
They are still naïve and do not understand how to judge appropriateness. They do not understand that they might be viewed by a sexual predator. For fb, we ask our children: How many friends do you have? How many close friends do you have? We go through them and set a limit. We set up fb and make our child list us as a close friend. It’s exhausting. Linkedin and pinterest are considered older people social networking, myspace is old and forgotten. Twitter is not interesting for the teens and tweens in general. Most use blogspot in school as many teachers are using to host interesting discussions with their classes. Only losers leave voicemails as tweens and teens do not like to listen to them. If they don’t answer, hang up and send a text. Skype and facetime use is on the rise: some of their most important conversations are happening via social networking and the trend will only get bigger. You will know so much more about their daily life. Stay quietly in the background and it will bring back the days when they were little and talking in the backseat, forgetting you were driving. I loved those adorable chats and hearing the kids interact. Now we are just doing it in a

Intimations on a TV Antenna By Ed Druckman I walk mainly because at my age running might induce a coronary. And as the years pile up like freshly sliced pastrami on a that sauntering is my speed of choice. It allows me to enjoy the views in much the same way I do the previously referenced sandwich, slowly, savoring each moment. It was on one recent saunter that I happened upon the “Lucky Brand” store at East 67th Street. It wasn’t the items in the window that caught my attention. With my body type, the words “fashion” and “jeans” are speaker” and “Barack Obama”. It was what was above the “Lucky Brand” store, a TV antenna. Why is it even still up there? Do some people still actually rely on an antenna for their TV signal? Or did the landlord decide to keep it up there because it was just cheaper? Let the weather take care of it, the same way Scrooge refused to remove Jacob Marley’s name from his sign? Whatever the answer, I found this relic of madeleine, or in my case more like a rugelach.
