It would be a lie if I said I didn’t like July. And this July is no different! As mentioned previously, we have THE Broadway Diva, Bernadette Peters, on our cover! Can you believe it? Ms. Peters, a New York icon graces our front page. She looks amazing and was even better to interview. But she isn’t on our cover for no reason. No, she has a cause célèbre – Broadway Barks. CoFounder of and dedicated to this once a year event, Bernadette received a Special Tony last month for her hard work to this cause. We can’t think of anyone else we’d rather have! In addition, we have Bob & Cortney Novogratz. This Dazzling Designing Duo who has taken New York by storm is also featured. With a top-rated show on HGTV, they are informing the still raising a large (seven children and counting) family. Talking about interior design, we have Amy Statuto, our new design expert. With a thriving business here in Manhattan she will be lending her advice (and her beauty to George Brescia for our style column) to the Resident. We thank her and think that this relationship will be a fruitful one. Resident wouldn’t be the Resident without our world-class travel editorial. From Papua New Guinea to Martha’s Vineyard; and everything in between – we’ve got it covered and explored! We love bringing our readers the best and hope that you use the content for planning trips or at least to day dream. We are also proud to announce our new alliance with Elvis Duran. Featured on the cover last month, he will be lending his expertise on music trends and must-listens. I think you will really enjoy and I hope you learn a little bit about today’s music. Dining, theater and fashion are also represented and just as strong! Take advantage and go see a wonderful play and head over to one of the several restaurants we have featured. You Lastly, I just would like to thank my staff (assistants and interns) for their hard work this month. Without you I couldn’t have done it. All of us really appreciate all of your effort. They allow me to look at the bigger picture and hopefully you will see the positive direction they are helping me bring to the Resident. KENNEBUNKPORT Once just a quaint fishing village, Kennebunkport, Maine, is quickly becoming a vacation
destination for travelers seeking an easy-to-reach location, fine dining, countless activities and luxurious—yet affordable—accommodations. A simple four-hour drive from New York, Kennebunkport is an ideal weekend escape for those looking for a quick getaway. We pick some of our favorite spots in this beautiful jewel of the southern Maine coast. NATURAL LUXURY If you truly want to experience the beauty of Maine, but with all the comforts of a luxury hotel, it doesn’t get any better than Hidden Pond. Tucked away on 60 acres of birch and sweet fern forest, Hidden Pond has been referred to as “the Ritz Carlton of summer camps.” All of Hidden Pond’s beautifully appointed guest cottages feature flat screen TVs, air conditioning, wireless internet, screened porches, outdoor rain showers, Frette linens, fireplaces, and iPod docking stations. Two-bedroom cottages also include full kitchens which can be stocked with your favorites prior to arrival. In
addition, a daily breakfast basket will be delivered right to your door. At Hidden Pond, the hardest part of each day may be deciding what to do next. Wander meandering nature trails, or take a beach cruiser bike and explore Kennebunkport’s winding back roads. Go paddleboarding, learn how to build a bird house, or take a yoga class surrounded by nature at the Farm. Or for a true indulgence, book an appointment at the Tree Spa, nestled into the trees above the lush forest floor. If the beach is more your speed, head to Hidden Pond’s sister property, The Tides Beach Club, where “Beach Tenders” will be sure you have a plush towel, comfy chair and cooler packed with chilled water. They’ll even bring you lunch on the beach. Hidden Pond also features several onsite dining options, including Earth, a collaboration with Boston chef and James Beard Award-winner Ken Oringer. Earth offers farm-fresh ingredients grown on Hidden Pond’s own organic farm, along with local meats, seafood, and cheeses—all overlooking the pond and nightly bonfires. BEACH CHIC If you like the beach, The Tides Beach Club is the place for you. The only hotel overlooking pristine Goose Rocks Beach, The Tides is one of Kennebunkport’s true

The Grand also has a convenient onsite gourmet food and wine shop featuring a great variety of adult beverages, delicious prepared salads and sandwiches, and everything you’d need for a beachside picnic. Next door, Fringe Hair Art Salon and Day Spa offers hair styling, skin treatments and massage.
“grand dames,” and after an extensive rejuvenation last year, it’s also one of the ‘Port’s chicest resorts. The rooms at the Tides have a soothing seaside ambiance, mixed with surprising and whimsical contemporary touches. This same eclectic mix extends to the common areas, where traditional white wing back chairs and lamps made from sea shells sit side-by-side with “invisible” bar stools and modern art. The Tides has a fun, energetic bar, and also offers dining. Savor an after dinner cocktail while rocking on the expansive front porch, or dine outside on the patio, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smells of the sea. Escape to the beach this summer…without the Hamptons traffic! A CLASSIC...ENHANCED Located in the heart of Kennebunkport’s lively Dock Square, the Kennebunkport Inn has always been a favorite because of its great location, outstanding service, and award-winning restaurant, One Dock. After a just-completed renovation, though, it’s gotten even better. Highlights of the renovation include a new lobby and common area, a sun terrace with outdoor fireplace and cozy deck chaises overlooking the Kennebunk River, and a new bar at One Dock. The changes also extend to One Dock’s menu, with a greater emphasis on small plates that showcase Maine’s abundant local seafood and produce. The Kennebunkport Inn is also a great place to stop by for cocktails, especially
during summer months, with a daily Happy Hour on the patio. IN-TOWN ELEGANCE Across the bridge in Lower Village is the ‘Port’s newest boutique hotel, The Grand. Though just opening this summer, the Grand already promises to be one of the area’s hottest spots. Located on Chase Hill, the Grand’s expansive windows and balconies provide sweeping views of the Kennebunk River and Dock Square. Elegantly appointed rooms offer a slightly urban feel, with soft, warm tones of Saffron and cream, chic furnishings and marble bathrooms featuring gleaming Waterworks hardware.
QUAINT & COZY CHARM Just outside of town are the Cottages at Cabot Cove, the quintessential New England cottage experience. Each of these uniquely designed cottages features a kitchenette and terrace, which is like your own private garden paradise. Take a rowboat or kayak to explore the Kennebunk River, or just hunker down with a picnic lunch or a good book in an Adirondack chair overlooking the Cove. SECLUDED SPLENDOR Down the winding back road from Cabot Cove is the Old Fort Inn. Once a grand hotel in Kennebunkport’s Cape Arundel, the original carriage house and stables have been converted into elegantly appointed, spacious guest rooms. Decorated in a traditional New England style, the rooms feature rich linens, custom wood furnishings, and four-poster beds. Outside, a spacious patio and heated lap pool feature plush chaise lounges, inviting you to soak up the summer sun. Old Fort’s Club House, with its collection of art deco books, deep leather sofas and floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, is a great place to linger. For families looking to stay a while, a chic, three bedroom cottage is available for rent…a homeaway-from-home on Maine’s southern coast. This hidden gem is perfect for couples looking to getaway—tucked just far enough away to be a tranquil oasis, yet minutes from downtown Kennebunkport. Still wondering if you should book a stay in Kennebunkport this summer? Well, stop. Treat yourself. You won’t be disappointed, and the only downside is that you won’t want to leave this beautiful and lively town.

that I had the opportunity to interview her, I was over-the-moon with joy and couldn’t wait to speak with her! I was so happy that I did. She was gracious, lovely and passionate about Broadway Barks, the organization in which she co-founded with Mary Tyler Moore and has just been honored with a special Tony for her hard work and dedication to giving back. Take the journey with us, you’ll be so happy you did!

it’s on Saturday July 14th
R: Tell me, what exactly does it do, what is its mission?
R: And who is it? Like the Humane Society or ASPCA?
BP (Bernadette Peters): Thank you that means a lot. Yes, my father had a bakery, but it wasn’t the famous one. He did, however, have his own business delivering Italian bread.
BP: groups worked together. And now there is something called the Mayor’s Alliance, so now they work together all the time but that

R: Bidawee? We work with them, as well as ASPCA – that’s great!
R: So when you say they worked together they raised funds?
BP: Yes! We also work with small rescue
R: Tell us about Broadway Barks, how did it come about? And what is your involvement with it? BP: I was in Annie Get Your Gun. We had for Gypsy of the Year for Broadway Cares. So we thought, what else could we do? So I said how about animals? Because I had everyone thought that would be great. My assistant Patty Sacente, and Richard Hester who was our stage manager, said we could get everybody from the shows and have the event in the alley between shows, and have an adoption event. So that’s what we did and this year it will be our 14th year. And I knew I could get my friend, Mary Tyler Moore, involved because she loves animals, and there
BP: No, it is just to work together to raise awareness for these animals that are in the shelters and how great they are and how they are being euthanized and how these wonderful animals need our help. And now it’s a big, big adoption event and I run into people on the street and they say “Oh we got him or we got her at Broadway Barks”, so people know to come to Broadway Barks to get a dog.
we have Greyhound rescues, Great Dane rescues, this year we are going to have Cocker Spaniel rescues, we can’t believe the amount of Cocker Spaniels that come through the system. R: And you got your dog, Stella (the dog featured on the cover), from a rescue? BP: Oh yes, she actually came from the city shelter.
R: So is it a once a year event?
R: What breed is Stella?
BP: Yes, it’s usually every July and this year

Now people just associate them as these terrible dogs, but they’ve really been victimized because they’re so amenable and they’ll do anything for you. Because these me and I’ll love you and because they’re very physical animals, they were very good at it. R: How many dogs and cats were adopted at the event last yeat? BP: We did very well, each shelter brings at least four dogs and I’d say three out of four get adopted.
is from the Bronx, I’m really a Jersey boy, but tell me about what it means to be a New Yorker BP: There are so many different areas in the city that could change your mood. I used to go down to the gym in Soho, when Soho was really coming up and it was like I’ve changed the atmosphere around me, I’ve changed the molecules and when I came back, I was refreshed. There are so many great parts of the city, even Williamsburg is so cool.
BP: Everybody is welcome to come on Saturday July 14. We are on Shubert Alley.
But Manhattan itself, I grew up in Queens but I couldn’t wait to cross the bridge and come into Manhattan because it was just so wonderful and so interesting and the theater is incredible. This season there is so much to see, so many great performances; I saw Death of a Salesman twice.
R: On another note, you grew up in Ozone Park?
R: So continuing this theme of New York, how is it to be a New Yorker and own a pet?
BP: I did, where did you grow up?
BP: Very easy. I live in an apartment, the dogs don’t live outside, they have to go outside and you take them out to enjoy the walk, the weather, the park. Then you have a

There is somebody to be responsible for and to care for; they’re so important in so many ways. R: And what section of the city do you live in? BP: I live on the Upper West Side. R: What do you like about it? The ultimate mecca for adventure below the surface. There’s a reason that intrepid travelers are smitten with Papua New Guinea: The tourists are few and far between, the locals are superbly friendly and the jaw-dropping scenery doesn’t hurt group of islands, just north of Australia, is still a little known destination among Americans. In other words, if you choose bragging rights. The cultural diversity of this remote corner of the world appeals to many, but what tops the list for the waterloving crowd, no doubt, is the diving
and snorkeling. Papua New Guinea is known for its staggering biodiversity and scientists continually discover new species here. With that said, if you’re lucky you might spot the rare thumbnailsized pygmy seahorse or the snub-nosed dolphin. I certainly kept my eyes peeled for rare creatures during my stay at Tawali Resort where the star of the show is the pristine reef. Located on a volcanic bluff overlooking the protected waters of Milne Bay, this private resort is only accessible by boat and attracts divers from around the world.

The answer became abundantly clear moments later when another plane rammed the second tower setting them both on a path to crash into a pile of rubble and toxic smoke taking nearly 3,000 people with it. New York City…make that Manhattan… is arguably the center of the universe when it comes to arts and culture. Throw in some of the best restaurants in the world and why bother going anywhere else? But if the truth be told, there are other areas in the United States that over the past number of years have begun to develop their own cultural scene. One such place is Virginia Beach. There was a time in the not so distant past that Virginia Beach was a quiet, sleepy seaside town populated by tourists, mostly from the area, and the military. That has changed. shops and others catering primarily to the tourist trade and does give the area a bit of a tacky appearance. But appearances can be deceiving. Along that same route are affordable restaurants in elegant settings. Top of the chart are a number of seafood eateries…and how could you expect less from a seaside resort? While Virginia Beach has grown in popularity as a tourist destination, the military is still a major presence in the area. There are any number of military installations from Virginia Beach’s Oceana Naval Air Base to Norfolk with its massive naval base and huge ships in port. Beachgoers peer skyward to watch as pointing toward the vast Atlantic as they streak out for training missions. The
scream of their engines fades to the back overhead and you become used to the noise. Located not far from the beach is the Edgar Cayce Association for Research professes to “Take your spiritual path to the next degree.” Cayce claimed to have insight and foresight where he appeared to tell of future events as well as a healer and was an early proponent of healthy eating. Symposiums at the Cayce ARE focus on “Haunting Experiences: Ghosts, hauntings, phantom phenomena and their relevance to our lives.” Much of what the ARE espouses was hard to digest for some visitors but there was no hard push from staffers to convert anyone. after months of work in the heart of the most bustling metropolis in the world, it may be the right time to swap the skyscrapers and suits for palm trees and swimwear. Boca Beach Club, located on South Florida’s Gold Coast, has a selection of 212 rooms, all equipped with the essential, up to date technological amenities and a luxurious modern bathroom. The rooms take full advantage of the sun-spoiled landscape If, instead of waking up to the metallic roar of the subway you would like to rise to the sound of palm trees dancing in the breeze, then I recommend an ocean-view room. Boca Beach Club is one of those rare resorts that can satisfy customers without them ever needing to leave the hotel, making this an ideal relaxation getaway; minimum effort for maximum comfort. Families are well catered for, with programs available for the children, such as Camp Boca, which offers educational and entertaining activities for children up to age 12. The outdoor playground should please even the most energetic youngster, but if that is not enough, the golf academy and family room will provide enough choice to keep the kids content. For the older visitors, the main attraction may well be the noteworthy Spa Palazzo, exclusive to only those staying at the hotel. Inspired by Spain’s iconic Alhambra Palace, the Spa Palazzo is as close as you can get to archaic European architecture and luxury without the need for your passport. In the relatively recent past the Pocono Mountains were know for small, cheesy honeymoon hotels and a handful of family resorts. Many of the Borscht Belt resorts were also aging but never managed to change and they began to close. The Concord, Brown’s, The Nevele are all little more than fond memories. Some in Pennsylvania saw the handwriting on the wall and began to modernize and upgrade. Old resort buildings that had seen better days were torn down and replaced with modern structures that could offer the best in accommodations, entertainment and dining. The advent of gambling and the recent addition
of table games to casinos gave the Poconos a distinct heads up over much of the competition. One of the prime examples of this forward thinking by management is Mt. Airy Resort and Casino, recipient of the AAA Four Diamond award. Not that many years ago it was simply the Mt. Airy Lodge. Today it is a beautiful, modern resort with all the amenities in its favor is that it is still family owned with a family member overseeing virtually every aspect of the operation from accommodations to entertainment to dining and decorations. They haven’t missed a beat.

long as you avoid rush hours. The resort is minutes from the exit. For the shopper there is the mega outlet center, Crossings, minutes away from the resort. Along the route between Crossings and Mt. Airy are scores of cute little boutiques, craft shops and much more. Without doubt one of the biggest boons for the Pocono resorts was the introduction of casinos. Until recently they were only permitted to have slots. About a year ago the state allowed them to add table games and they really took off. Rooms at Mt. Airy are spacious and comfortable. The resort offers a spa that can hold it’s own against most any in the world and dining that will suit any palate from gourmet to casual cheeseburger. We dined at Red Steakhouse, LaSorelle, Betty’s Diner and the Buffet. While
the positive far outweighed the negative, there was some of both. Food preparation, presentation and wait service were all impeccable, steaks came exactly as ordered and the wait staff was knowledgeable, offering both suggestions and the reason for the suggestion. While many casinos have cut out low stakes games for players, Mt. Airy encourages the very small gambler as well as the so-called “Whales,” the high slots than any other casino that we’ve seen in decades. The bit players were treated with the same respect and courtesy as There are still one or two of the old fashioned Pocono resorts where you can bathe in a gigantic champagne glass (for those so inclined) but for the new era in Pennsylvania resorts Mt. Airy ranks at the top for convenience, comfort, accommodations and whatever else you

For too many of us New Yorkers, Macau is an add-on. A side note. A gambling destination. People have a lot to learn about Macau. It’s a unique destination that is equal amounts history and modernism and has enough entertainment to keep any traveler enticed. Add in the world’s original Asian-fusion cuisine and you have a place that deserves to shed its misnomer as “the Vegas of the East”; Vegas has nothing on this place. Dating back to the Qin Dynasty in 206 B.C., Macau, just southwest of Hong Kong, developed as a major settlement when the Portuguese arrived in the 16th century. Until December 1999, Macau remained a Portuguese colony, where hundreds of years worth of Chinese and Portuguese culture coexisted and created one of the world’s most fascinating cultural combinations. Much remains of the original architecture, villages, cobblestone streets and heritage sites. Knowing Resident
Here I saw the breathtaking ruins of St. Paul’s Cathedral, built in 1602, the Macau Museum, Senado Square and the ancient Na Cha Temple. It was a surprising mix of history and cultures, all along cobblestone streets that look like the set of a movie set in 16th century Europe. Jumping from Portuguese to Chinese history, I visited the Temple of the Goddess A-Ma. Built in 1448, the temple, with picture-perfect vantage points, is dedicated to the Chinese sea goddess and is Macau’s namesake. With the smell of incense mixing ever so slightly with the scent of fragrant blossoms that climbed the temple walls, I observed people kneeling and paying respect to the goddess. If you’re looking to continue the cultural tour of Macau, head to Taipa Village. An island, Taipa is home to more winding, cobblestone streets, pastel buildings, relics of both cultures and hidden surprises around every corner. There’s also the Macau Tower, an impressive building seen from almost everywhere that stands high above the skyline. Here the adventurous traveler can experience the world’s highest bungee jump. For me, it’s all about the food; when you eat like the locals, you become a traveler, not a tourist. They do traditional Chinese food and Portuguese food well. Then there’s the Macanese food: the amalgamation of Eastern, Western, African and destination that is unlike any other in the world. I had so many authentic Portuguese meals that I forgot I was in Asia. At Manuel’s, and other delicacies. On another night, I headed to the Michelin recommended Antonio in Taipa, where the chef/ owner’s famous seafood rice was matched by Antonio himself.

For Chinese cuisine, there’s the incredible Emperor’s Dim Sum lunch at Treasure Palace Chinese Restaurant in the City of Dreams mega-resort. In Coloane Island, you can sit outside with the locals at Ng Tim restaurant, enjoying traditional Chinese seafood dishes such as Pissing Prawns and Drunken Sauna Shrimps while being serenaded by a guitar player.
The hope, when traveling, is to learn something new. To learn about a culture and to gain a new perspective. What I also learned was to never judge a guidebook by its cover. Macau is rich— not just in terms of the billion-dollar casino industry—and deserves to be the main subject of your travels, not just an interesting footnote.
Of course you’ll have to try Macanese food, and there’s no better place than at Restaurante Litoral. Here, traditional Macanese dishes such as African chicken are the best of their kind.
over to the other side of the world, it make sense to spend some time in Hong Kong, one of the world’s most dynamic, colorful, and delicious cities.
Nightly entertainment is varied and exciting! A masterpiece of technology and beauty is “The House of Dancing Water” show at the City of Dreams. Combining theater, dance, gymnastics, high-performance diving and even motorcycle stunts, this jaw-dropping extravaganza is presented by the world’s most talented performers and is great fun for everyone. There is no shortage of hotels in Macau. The Venetian is the largest hotel/casino in the world, and the City of Dreams mega-resort features three hotels in one: The Hard Rock Hotel, Crown Towers and the Grand Hyatt Macau. The Galaxy Macau also consists of three hotels, and houses the private hot-spot, China Rouge—perhaps the sexiest bar I’ve ever seen. I chose to rest my head in a hotel that was a bit more subdued; Mandarin Oriental was perfection. It’s chic, stylish and graceful. It also had the most delicious buffet breakfast, where I was not ashamed to eat both gorgeous rooms and suites, each with a water view. A true highlight was the spa, where I melted into ecstasy during the two-hour Macanese Dragon Experience. It began with a foot scrub, followed by a personalized body scrub, a private steam shower and then a whirlpool bath and a Chinese lymphatic body massage that included the use of meditation balls and aromatherapy.
I had the fortunate opportunity to stay at the Mandarin Oriental. I had heard that it was among the world’s best properties, but I when I arrived at the appropriately named Macau Suite, I was made speechless. This was one of the most beautiful, impeccably-designed, subtly extravagant suites I’d with incredible views of the city and Victoria Harbour; my suite at the Mandarin Oriental was divine. I was greeted with a welcome tea from my personal butler, and after a long bath in my giant marble tub, time in a hotel room. I knew I wanted to get out and see the city, but I didn’t want to leave that room. The hotel itself is legendary. Ideally located, it features 501 rooms and suites, a phenomenal spa and ten choices for eating and drinking, tram to the top of The Peak, Hong Kong’s most popular attraction, with stunning views of the city below. I embarked on a market tour, visited the beautiful Man Mo temple and leisurely wandered through the streets of SoHo (South Hollywood Road). And when I saw the nightly Symphony of Lights show on the city’s skyline, I thought Hong Kong could teach NY a thing or two about skylines. Depending on how much time you have in Hong Kong, the list of sites is endless. Like all good trips, mine seemed to end too soon, but it was a lovely

By Alexander Berki Modern New York is often seen as a mixture of people from different cultures and nationalities. One may be in the chicest nightclub in the city and catch a glimpse of an A-list celebrity sitting at the next table over from some unknown hipster from Williamsburg. What brings these people together is common interest of food, music or simply a good time. They may not even address each other let alone be acquainted, but they are at least in the same venue at the same time. However, the social world of New York during the Gilded Age was very different from what we know today. Before the Civil War and the boom of the Industrial Revolution, the only way to be assured a position in New Yorks’ fashionable society was by birth. This collection of families who were able to trace their lineage to the founding Dutch settlers of Manhattan became known as the Knickerbockers. Named for the knee breeches their ancestors wore, they were proud of their heritage and lived rather conservatively in their townhouses around Washington Square. in their traditions and continent in being so. Reconstruction would bring an end to their social way of life. As the South fell so did the exclusive world of the Knickerbockers. Antebellum planters left the ruins of the postwar South to join those men who were amassing great fortunes in the North as Masters of Industry and Barons of Wall Street. The high stakes gabbling of the 1860’s made men into millionaires over night; it would only be a matter of time before these “nouveau riche” would storm the fortress of “old New York.” As the cities wealthy population grew, it became clear to some of New York’s old money that the newly wealthy would not be able to be kept at bay for long. Enter one Caroline Webster Schermerhorn Astor. Born into New York’s Dutch aristocracy, Caroline was descended from the extended Dutch settling Schermerhorn family whose wealth came from shipping. At the age of twenty-two she wed William Backhouse Astor Jr., the grandson of John Jacob Astor who

With the rapidly growing population of Manhattan making its way uptown, society began to abandon Washington Square and move north up 5th and Madison Avenues to an area on the outskirts of town known as Murray Hill. In 1856, William and Caroline built a four-story mansion in the newly fashionable, yet conservative,

Ruling over New York’s society was a daunting task, which entailed Caroline to enlist the aid of Ward McAllister to be her guiding force. Samuel Ward McAllister was a southerner from Savannah, Georgia and was a cousin of the Astors, by marriage. McAllister set out to make himself the “tastemaker” of New York’s high society. stated; “there are only about 400 people in fashionable New York, if you go outside of that number you strike people who are either not at ease in a ballroom or else make other people not at ease.” The phrase was immediately picked up by the newspapers of the day and the term “The Four Hundred” was coined. Ironically, it was also the New York City being the ever-changing place that it is, would eventually bring an end to “The Four Hundred.” Over the decades different scandals would shake its foundation to the core, and the then see that there was little that kept them in a common social setting. Everyone knows that summer is about lounging around the pool with your friends while enjoying tons of cocktails and eating fabulous BBQ! However, the most important thing you must have to enjoy your summer is an amazing play list to really set the mood. Here are my top five picks for the hottest songs of the summer:
Cher Lloyd “Want U Back” Cher is already a huge artist in the UK where she placed third on the seventh season of “The X Factor”,but she is now starting to make her impact across the pond! Her song “Want U Back” is making power to become her big crossover hit. It’s bubbly, fun, and just makes you want to mimic her sexy grunting noises by the end of the song! UH!
P!nk “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)” last year and guess what? She is back and better than ever! Her career has taken a new turn since her comeback in 2008 and I absolutely love her new sound. She is at the top of her game and this new single shows P!nk doing what she does best, rocking out without any regrets!
Pitbull feat. Shakira “Get it Started” This song is muy caliente! Shakira and Pitbull are no strangers to “Elvis Duran and the Z100 Morning Show”. We love them both and the two together have probably made my favorite song on this list. With a sick synth-pop club anthem, Shakira and Pitbull have a guaranteed hit on their hands!
The Wanted “Chasing the Sun” The Wanted are very good friends of our show and actually came out to surprise me and perform at an event we had the talent and sex appeal (hello lady!) these boys have. With their second single, “Chasing the Sun”, we hear something different- an infectious Eurodance track, not yet heard on around for a while. These guys manage to show us not all boy bands are created equal.
Carly Rae Jepsen feat. Owl City “Good Time” Now y’all thought my girl Carly Rae Jepsen was going to be a one hit wonder after the massive pop culture success of “Call Me Maybe” right? Wrong! If you thought this girl couldn’t pull off another hit then get ready to be surprisingly mistaken. This song takes both artists quirky talents and gets them out of their comfort zones to create one smooth pop sound destined to give Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City another number one hit! Now that’s how you have a “Good Time”!

Summer vacations are one of the highlights of our year but our budget is challenged. Nowadays more than ever we are hearing about“stay-cations”. Can mommy marketing and stealth planning ensure a successful family “stay-cation”? Consider family dynamics as you embark on your planning. Teenagers are very skeptical about “stay-cations.” They would rather do nothing with their friends than go on a local family outing. Little kids often struggle without their usual routine. And in-between kids are not fun unless most of the time is spent doing what they like. It’s all about the marketing! Start by saying – this year we are going to have a vacation adventure close to home. We can do all the things we can’t usually do and with our favorite family members. Here is how we are working it out with our four children aged eight to fourteen: best coupon deal(s) wins a $20 Apple iTunes gift card. Coupons are everywhere. We use Groupon plus there are coupons for local hotspots in libraries, grocery stores, online and really everywhere if you are looking. Search out coupons for restaurants, hotels and special outings such as theme parks, ziplines, water parks etc. Have a few $20 gift
great deals. Restaurant Roulette – each person selects a few places they really want to go, especially outdoor restaurants. Even if the places are not known by name, they can specify pizza, Chinese, Thai etc.. Put all the choices in a hat and take turns choosing. Stay at least one night in a hotel with a pool – whether it is indoor or outdoor is less important. Little kids love to order room service and sit and watch a movie eating their food. Most family hotels have kids menus and kids clubs now. Stretch out the hotel experience. Arrive early and if you can’t check in, enjoy the amenities such as the pool or drop your bags and hit a restaurant. Use those kids clubs to steal some adult time away. Taking the E-reader plunge and take turns with each person reading a special summer book. Embrace the new technology as your How crazy is that! Let them bring their electronics. Today’s kids carry them morning to night – set reasonable limits but accept they are coming. Let your child teach you one new thing on your device. One of my kids installed the Emogi app so I can add colorful smiles and hearts to my texts and emails.
Create fun, learning jobs. Let your child be the navigator – use your phone and let him/ her instruct you step by step. They learn geography and modern day map reading. Other jobs can include journal writer, photo taker and agenda master. Be loose with cash if you can. Try to focus on all the things you can do – don’t emphasize all the limits. How you project it is how they will see it. Buy the large ice cream and eat it walking through a beautiful place such as a garden, park or lake. Try to say yes to the little things they ask for. Bring your fun self. You are building lifetime memories so just smile and introduce you newest idea – “doubling down on delight.” Give everything a fresh and catchy theme and some might become family traditions. See things through their eyes. All “staycations” should include eat, play, swim, laugh, outdoors and fun people. “Staycations” should not include yelling under any circumstances. Kids are tough and for the most part ungrateful but don’t give in and be the yelling parent on the vacation. These days will become their fondest memories. Be vigilant for the moment when you catch them laughing and smiling, capture it – this is what you will remember. And don’t forget the

Zutto So what’s new in the Tribeca dining scene? If you happen to live in the “triangle below Canal Street” and was complaining about dining, Zutto may be your savior. Renovated not too long ago, this Japanese American Pub with a history of more than thirty years continues to bring surprises to diners from the neighborhood and the entire New York City area. Based on a completely new concept, Chef Joshua Smookler has turned the restaurant into a unique izakaya-like pub that serves not only traditional dishes like sushi, but also authentic Japanese drinks like sake. And on
Zutto’s sushi is full of imagination top of that, he brings in eccentric dishes with an American twist. Sounds interesting? Let’s explore more!
Eccentric Dishes with an American twist
Zutto’s must-order appetizer is the Pork Belly Bun, steamed bun stuffed with pork belly. But wait, it’s not just that simple! The secret lies in the special miso-mayonnaise that offsets the richness of the pork. Just one bite, the softness of the puffy bun together with the juicy pork belly immediately melts in your mouth and melted my heart away. If you are courageous enough, try the spicy miso soup. With its mouthwatering chili oil, this aggressive bowl with red miso and pork minces will surely excite your taste buds to the fullest. Although everybody was talking about their Ramen recipe which claims that “up to 120 lbs of pork bones are boiled in a 24-inch pot at the highest heat for about 24 hours”, I decided to try something else. After all, it takes more than one dish for a restaurant to be a guru. And I wasn’t disappointed at all. Their small plates are phenomenal as well. Ebi Mayo is a popular dish of fried shrimp served with yuzu mayo and a lemon quarter. Squeeze the lemon on top of the crispy and tender shrimp and enjoy its freshness in your mouth. And how can we forget about Foie Gras – a whole piece of seared foie gras sitting on top of a piece of soaked brioche. With roasted onion layers spreading like lily
By Jackie Yin petals and pomegranate seeds decorating a crimson band of sour-sweet pomegranate sauce, the delicate plating is a feast for the eyes. I cut a small piece of everything and put it in my mouth… I was in heaven. Zutto’s sushi is also full of imagination: Tribeca – spicy tuna, avocado and caviar
in a triangle, Miami – salmon, salmon row, avocado and kaiware sprouts, Gulf of scallion and cucumber with spicy mayo, the list goes on and on. My experience at Zutto was unforgettable. After all, who can resist to be pampered with top-notch delicacies in the dim candlelight? Just sit back and relax, and let your taste buds fantasize.

OTH BOLD AND BRIGHT COMBINATION OF COLOR STRIPES on the wall, the interior of Orchard House best represents the style of the restaurant – imaginative dishes that send you on a ride of rich gastronomic waves. Situated on the historic Orchard Street in the Lower East Side, The Orchard House brings continuous surprise to the community with its fresh brand of modern American plates, original cocktail creations as well as a vast selection of wine and tea. With the sound of smooth jazz, I started my dinner with the Sage Lady. With a slight cheered me up with its light and warm taste. But the best was yet to come! Based on a belief that dishes are made to be shared and for fun, The Orchard House crafted its menu between small and large plates. Always a fan of fried pickles, I decided to try out what tricks they can do to this simple starter. I have to say I was absolutely impressed. Guess what was served with the pickles? Whipped sheep’s milk ricotta, sweet onion and drizzled dill! Take a bite and experience that magical moment when the sourness of the pickles, followed by the sweetness of the onion, is smoothed out by the subtle taste of the doughy ricotta, ending on a slight minty note of the dill. Their griddled lamb sliders are just phenomenal. The lamb is prepared to its of scallion mayo triggered the succulent cucumber added a naughty twist to the experience. dishes, I headed for a seafood delight – Crab Cakes. Glittered with a thin layer of basil oil balsamic glaze, the crab patty sat on top of a generous amount of aioli sauce in the center of a decorated long plate. The cake had a vibrant taste with its abundant crabmeat, brash enough but also not lacking sophistication thanks to the lemon garlic aioli. For a large plate, I picked the roast striped bass. When the aroma of port wine met be more perfect. The sauté crispy vegetables were absolutely a bonus. Another large plate that I would like to recommend is Ricotta Gnocchi that comes with wild mushrooms, brussels sprout leaves and oregano cream. The warm gnocchi enjoyed a played well with the saltiness of the mushroom in the aromatic oregano cream. Although I couldn’t try everything, I knew that The Orchard House would become a favorite of mine. Its edgy interior design and varied menu with something for everyone will surely make this modern American restaurant a vibrant spot in the neighborhood.

folk, in an indoor venue located in London’s weekend as various as its music, with even a family-friendly Sunday of ‘jam sessions’ and children’s activities. As special and obviously unique as the Olympics are for London, there are numerous sporting events that take place every summer in London. Ascot Racecourse, found just outside London in Berkshire, is home to the country’s most illustrious horse races and has traditionally been so since the early eighteenth century. This is more than just horse racing however, as visitors come dressed according to the height of elegance and can enjoy luxury service and champagne. However, the signature sporting event of London’s summer is of course the Tennis Championships in Wimbledon. Tickets for this can be steep but you need
not fear as the big screen outside the stadium makes up the focus of the large crowd that gathers on ‘Murray Mountain’ (formerly known as Henman Hill), named after the British number one, Andy Murray. London’s east-end is home to the Olympics and known for its rich history and cultural depth. The aforementioned London 2012 festival has organized ‘Stories of the World: At Home with the World’ in Liverpool Street; with the world coming to London, this event London and how household ‘English’ things may have originated from elsewhere. While in Liverpool Street, it would be worth making Severs’ house. This house is something of a time capsule, that is to say an almost perfect
preservation of a typical seventeenth century English house. For a more direct link to the Olympics, London is offering tours of all the Olympic sites, form the newly-built Olympic stadium in Stratford, to the legendary Wembley Stadium and even Old Trafford , which is actually in Manchester, where the worldfamous Manchester United play. 2012 is a special time for a special city, and this summer is the ideal time to share in this wholly unique occasion. While the Olympic Games themselves will of course demand the greatest attention, it would be wrong to overlook the summer as a whole. London is

By Narbeh Minassian To quote a popular English saying, the Sterling Renaissance Festival does what it says on the tin. A summer of fantasy, adventure, and family fun starting on the weekend of July 7th, this attraction offers something to you that museums and books can only offer to your imagination. A carefully reconstructed Elizabethan village spanning wooden time-machine, complete with pubs, jousting arenas, more than 15 outdoor stages, and royal residences. The occupants of Warwick village are comprised of professional actors performing roles up and down the Elizabethan social hierarchy; from lords and ladies to beggars and wenches, you may even be lucky to come across Queen Elizabeth herself as she ostentatiously strolls through her Queendom. With this, the illusion is set. From illusion to experience, the village is brought to life by the various performances running throughout the summer. The festival boasts a forty member professional company, showcasing skills in swordplay and jousting, which are two quintessential Elizabethan spectacles. Daredevils put their bodies on the line in feats of balancing skills and heights, with some risky sword-handling thrown in (literally) for good measure. Of course, Renaissance England wouldn’t be Renaissance England without many a musical and dance act on almost every other corner, which includes the unmistakable sounds of the Celtic bagpipes and a regularly-staged comedy show. The English may not be known for their food these days but back in the 16th century they were one of the leading culinary pioneers, and the festival does not hold back in providing the chefs capable of emulating their Elizabethan predecessors. Specialties include succulent Turkey leg, her Majesty’s steak-on-a-stake, lighter fare, and desserts. English pub, and Warwick village does not disappoint. And like a true English villager, you can enjoy all this even in weather most English. As an English Literature student from England, keen Elizabethan reader, and frequent visitor to London’s Globe Theater, I hold the highest expectations when it comes to the authenticity and accuracy of any attempted reproduction of one of England’s most iconic eras. With this in mind, you can trust me when I say long live Sterling Renaissance Festival 15385 Farden Road Sterling, NY 13156 1.800.879.4446 www.sterlingfestival.com

THE DRAMATIC
AU G M E N TAT I O N OF SOCIAL MEDIA
in recent years has paved the way for an unprecedented means of written expression. Facebook and Twitter are constantly bombarded by status updates and posts, which have inadvertently revealed that the general grasp of the English language is indirectly proportional to the growth in the use of such social media. You don’t need to look much further than the Iphone’s auto correct service and Microsoft Word’s spell check to know that we live in an era when there is always something to do it for you. There is the notion that machines will do the job for us, which has fostered an approach to grammar of such ferocious laziness that I am tempted to advocate a return of Luddism. However, I fear that it is more a case that people, particularly the youth, just don’t care anymore. I have become known as something of a ‘grammar Nazi’ to my friends, but I see nothing tyrannous in expecting a basic knowledge of literacy from those who have paid through their noses for an humiliating themselves on the aforementioned social media, and it clinging on to some bizarrely perceived notion that understanding information takes not only precedence over grammatical accuracy, but complete importance (might I add, this seems far more ‘Nazi’
Resident July 2012
to me); in other words, as long as the reader understands what the author is getting at, all else is mere embellishment. In which case, of Newspeak. The responses were not completely ridiculous and there is some element of truth in the argument that grammatical ineptitude does not fully inhibit understanding. After all, we all know that when someone writes ‘should of ’, someone means ‘should have’, or when someone writes ‘your good’, someone means ‘you’re good’, or when someone types ‘their winning’ instead of ‘they’re winning’, we still know what the intent is, and when someone writes…well, you get the message. It is true that we know what was meant, kind of like how we all know what the dog means when he lifts his hind-leg next to a tree; this just doesn’t justify literate inadequacy. I even saw one write ‘pre-madonna’ instead of ‘prima donna’, the latter is a term often ‘before Madonna’. These are the bread and butter basics of our English language, it’s not like I’m expecting a universal mastering of the subjunctive; accept and except are not interchangeable, people! The English language is being butchered by a Neanderthal approach to grammar. If this language were a statue, it would have eroded to an unrecognizable extent. Rest in peace, dear author, you will be missed.
