Editor’s Note Another month has gone by, so let us march into March. Here at NY Resident, we are so excited and full of a can-do spirit. Having come off our successful February edition which featured Ms. Rosanna Scotto (see resident.com for our mention on Good Day New York) we have followed up with Joan and Melissa Rivers! These two women, of an indelible character, are the very essence of New York. And we are so thankful that they are on our cover and that we have an exclusive interview with them. As fabulous as the mother-daughter team is (and it is), it’s just the tip of the iceberg. You can come to expect NY Resident to lead the charge; to be the standard-bearer and to be at the forefront of the most exciting celebrity interviews with the most exciting New Yorkers. Just wait for the upcoming editions, I’m sure you won’t disappoint. But back to March’s edition. Thinking of traveling? Use NY Resident as your guide. We have travel stories on Nevis, Barcelona, Cancun and Lake Tahoe, among others. Stay in the city at the fabulous Carlton Hotel or Library Hotel or upstate to Bedford Post Inn. Whichever destination you choose (or choose them all), we know that you won’t go wrong!
we have an interview with Kevin Mckenzie from the American Ballet Theater, an interview with Marc Salem, the world-renowned Mentalist, an evening with classical music masters and reviews of some of the newest and hottest Broadway shows of the season. Of course we couldn’t be called NY Resident if we didn’t whave the top dining destinations. And this month is no different. In March, you will Steak - try them, they are all excellent! Don’t know what to wear, we’ve got that covered too (no pun intended). Our style correspondent, Hillary Latos, goes beyond the scenes at Fashion Week, to discover the latest trends and what’s hot to wear this upcoming season. For the family, we have camps. camps and some more camps! Use the magazine as your source for everything a parent needs to know about sending your child to summer camp. Upstate, out-of-state, in the city or even internationally we have found and reported on only the best. I encourage you to use our trusted advertising partners, some of them have been in business for decades and know what they are talking about. I wish to thank all of our readers for your encouraging and thoughtful comments. Keep them coming, it means a lot to us. So from our team to you - enjoy and happy reading! Best,

Joan and Melissa Rivers: A Team that Can’t Be Beat And What Becomes a Legend, Most? By Christopher A. Pape
For years, Joan Rivers has been bringing laughter and joy into the homes of many. Through hard work, pride and a never-ceasing sense of drive she has conquered it all. From hit television programs to packed concert halls, she is the embodiment of how a woman can break down barriers and be truly, funny. And now with her daughter Melissa, she is having a Renaissance, risen to new heights and has subsequently engrained herself in the hearts of a new generation of fans. Both Joan and Melissa sat down with us to explain it all - from what it means to be the quintessential mother-daughter team, to Melissa’s son and Joan’s grandson Cooper and their favorite places in NY. Join us for the ride, it’ll be as thrilling as it sounds!

you two Tell and
Joan Rivers (JR): I try to pay no attention to any career, except my own. I always think of myself as a horse with blinders. And once I get something, I work on it without a stop. If I get an opportunity, I never sit back and think someone else will help me with this. And I try, try, try to be involved in every I do. Melissa Rivers (MR): Yeah. I try to do my mother’s playbook. NYR: Well, obviously it works. JR: If you start getting upset about what the Kardashians are doing, you’ll go insane. Just worry about your own package. NYR:(Joan): I am a “Joan Ranger” and a fan of your reality series, Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best. And I know for these shows and your comedy routine that you don’t like to be called a legend or an icon, but if someone wants to honor your work and JR: Nobody ever wants to, so you don’t have to worry. I’m never going to get this award or that award. I’m so out of that context. NYR: You’re never going to win the Nobel Peace Prize. JR: I don’t think so. I’ll never be given the Mark Twain Comedy Award. So we don’t have to worry. NYR (Joan): Is it hard to be funny. Do you JR: Unfortunately, it comes totally naturally, but you have to learn to shut up sometimes and only share certain jokes with certain people. NYR (Melissa): How was it to grow MR: People always ask me that and my life

was very normal - it was always hilarious when I was getting grounded. No one checked under their seat to see if there was a Whoopee Cushion, it didn’t work like that. JR: I remember once, Edgar (her late husband) had very bad appendicitis. It ruptured, it was just awful. And we were driving to the hospital and I said to him That’s how the family dealt with pain. NYR: When I think of Joan and Melissa Rivers, I think of New York. What about you makes you a New Yorker. What does it mean MR: Well, I grew up in LA. So my mom will have to answer that one. JR: I was born in Brooklyn, grew up in Larchmont. I love the city, I’ve got the pulse of the city. I just think it’s the best city in the world. But if you’re born in NYC, you’re an ass. Because there is something for everyone here,
and I make sure when Cooper visits, that he loves the city and that he gets a big chunk and taste of it. We shop, we go to lunch and the theater at least once, while he is here. NYR: What is your favorite place, restaurant MR: Well, Cooper loves Serendipity 3 . JR: It’s been around forever. I used to go with Melissa and Jackie-O was there with John-John - that’s how old it is. NYR: MR: Oh yeah. Cooper loves it there. NYR: JR: that’s old lady, dress-up. I love 21 because of the tradition. My god, it’s a speakeasy. This is great, this is New York. And then when I want to go to talk to my friends and have no one annoy us - David Burke’s on 61st street - I just went there with Barbara Walters and Cindy Adams. My favorite place for lunch is Michael’s, if you want to make a deal. And if you really want to talk, Sarabeth’s on 59th street. Sarabeth’s is the best kept secret because nobody famous goes there. NYR (Joan): Where in the city do you live JR: I live on the UES and I love the shopping on Madison Avenue, best shopping in the world. I love the park, I use the park. NYR (Joan): Many people know that you work with God’s Love, We Deliver. Is there any other charity that you work with and JR: I was involved with Blaine Trump, when meals on bicycles. They now do 3,000 meals a day. I’m very involved with Guide Dogs for the Blind. And now Melissa and I are very involved with Wounded Warriors. With them, we go to hospitals and we talk to wounded soldiers. It’s people who really need someone to talk to. MR: I work with the Bogart Foundation which is for pediatric cancer research. Their
motto is “bench to bedside”, where they follow the inception of an idea to the actually application and it’s great because it’s based in LA. NYR: I know you’ve met them all, but who has been your favorite celebrity meeting or interview? MR: On the red carpet, it’s always the one’s that get it. George Clooney, the comedians are fabulous. The bigger they are, the more charming they are. JR: On Fashion Police, we had Nicki Minaj and was just adorable. NYR (Joan): What was your favorite venue, show or special that you were in? JR: I work one night a week, whenever I can, at the West Bank Cafe. It’s my favorite
place, because I adlib so much. NYR (Melissa): Other than Fashion Police, which you are the Executive Producer of, what other things are you working on? MR: I have the shopping website Shoparatti and I’m a mom - which is hard work!
NYR (Joan): Working on any new jokes, we’d be honored to test one out for you? JR: Always! Here’s one - My dog is dead and garbage and threw him in the freezer and now they’re eating him as a popsicle. NYR: Are you watching the new Celebrity Apprentice? MR: I heard it’s really good. JR: I just found out that our season of Celebrity Apprentice just started airing in the UK, but it gave me the chance to spend time with Melissa - she came back to NY and stayed for a month. NYR: Any scoops you can give us? Working on anything new? MR: Fashion Police is becoming an hour-long show. JR: We are very excited about that!

When your time comes to escape from the daily demands of life and leave behind the ever-increasing pace of the city there is no better place to do so than at Nisbet Plantation. Nisbet grants you a chance to relax under palm trees on the shore of turquoise waters as the gentle breeze keeps you cool from the revitalizing sun. This beach club is designed to chance to do absolutely nothing. It is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the rejuvenation of its care-free atmosphere! Everyone at Nisbet, as well as on the island at large, seems to operate under the same worriless, lighthearted frame of mind. This contagious outlook is easy to appreciate once you’ve gained insight into the way of life on Nevis. Nevis is an island where time plays no role; rushing is simply not an option. Drivers honk their horn as to suggest a friendly hello to others on the road rather than the crude gesture we too often encounter in New York. And taxi drivers, receptionists, and tour guides alike jump on the opportunity to share with you the history of this captivating island they feel fortunate to call home. Located along the border of the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, Nevis is a lush, green island teeming with history. in American history as it was the birthplace of Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton. However, it was British Naval Captain, Horatio Nelson, who came to marry Fanny Nisbet, and live together on Nisbet Plantation. Constructed in 1778, Nisbet Plantation originally functioned as a sugar plantation until later transformed into a coconut plantation as the sugar trade became less lucrative. This 30 acre estate now serves as the Caribbean’s only plantation resort located directly on the beach. Whether for a couple’s retreat, a family vacation, or a weekend hideaway, Nisbet’s 36 private and romantic cottage-style accommodations offer precisely what it is you’re looking for. In fact, Nisbet’s current owner, David Dodwell, was named Caribbean Hotelier of the Year in 2010 for his outstanding performance in areas such as hotel operations, food and beverage, property maintenance, and staff training. Nisbet has also been the recipient of the AAA Four Diamond Award for six straight years and was named “The Caribbean Hideaway Resort of the Year” in Andrew Harper’s Guide. Yet it is not only the accommodations which have received such high praise as Nisbet’s Palm Spa has also been recognized by Conde Nast Traveler. To top it off, the service at Nisbet was ranked among the best in the world by Travel + Leisure!

t wasn’t the pristine scenery of Hawaii that impressed me most, nor was it the oceanfront hotels, idyllic sunsets, scenic waterfalls or the delicious mai tais; what impressed me most was that you could enjoy the perfect temperatures of Hawaii, both day and night, undisturbed by pesky insects. There was never an adventurous hike or sublime evening cut short by bothersome mosquitoes, or a day at the beach disrupted by sand flies. As a traveler who loves the outdoors, I found this to be an unexpected and rare luxury. This may seem like a small detail in the face of so much beauty, but it actually creates an environment that allows you to deeply relax while enjoying the gifts Mother Nature has bestowed this Polynesian paradise. experience at The Barn, as well as for the formal set at The Farmhouse. With from Balthazar, The Farmhouse serves dinner trending from an Italian menu need to keep reminding yourself to keep room for the main course. Main course options get your taste buds spinning as your eyes glaze over the meals presented. The Barn, on the other hand is where you want to grab your casual breakfast or lunch. The time-lapsed eighteenth century room is characterized by the antique barn wood beams framing the dining room. With a chalkboard full of the days specials and a counter full of breakfast pastries you’ll feel as if you walked into a delightfully warm neighborhood café.
The rustic inn hosts guests in one of their luxurious eight rooms. Each room is comprised of Frette linens and towels, plush down comforter covers and marbled bathrooms. If you have any appreciation for nature, request a room with a balcony overlooking the estate. Visiting from New York City, the oxygenated air will cleanse your lungs with every breath you take. The importance of fresh air is often overlooked but vital for your skin, body and overall health—also a major factor that contributes to a deep night of sleep at the inn. Waking from that deep night of sleep, support your body’s health and follow the slate stone path to the yoga studio. As you lay your yoga mat onto the walnut wood. This positive association sets the mood for the entirety of your rejuvenating yoga session. The Bedford Post Inn is a romantic destination of serenity. The beauty of the escape is the convenience of travel from New York City to the Westchester estate. With such beautiful grounds, the inn provides limitless explorations throughout the forestry and landscapes. At the end of your trip, you will have left with a newfound appreciation for relaxation and come away with a deep love and admiration for the eighteencentury-turned-modern inn.

If you want great Indian food, try Tandoori’s Northern Indian cuisine. It features hardy sauces and unique Pakistani and Portuguese seasonings for a change of pace. You don’t have to churn through midtown Manhattan or 6th Street crowds to get there. In fact you can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere where couples, private parties, families and singles feel right at home. Surroundings include silk artwork, copper glasses, white tablecloths and colorful hanging lamps. It is a great place for parties, unhurried dining bar welcoming people in.There aren’t too many restaurants like it that have such an attentive staff. I enjoy the way vegetables are prepared in Indian cuisine so my friend and I ordered vegetable samosas and onion pakora served with diced onions and tamarind and mint sauces on the side. dishes and a variety of condiments. We also sampled the Lasooni shrimp appetizer, an original creation served on a bed of lettuce with a delicate tomato-onion-garlic sauce. The specialty is Tandoori where fresh ingredients are slow-cooked in a clay oven with freshly ground spices to taste. We ordered the popular mixed grill with
scallions, cilantro, onions, and creatively marinated ribs, chicken, lamb and salmon. The chicken is uniquely seasoned with Degi Mirch, similar to paprika but milder. There host suggested the wonderful Chettinad chicken which is cubes of white meat chicken with a rich brown sauce that has a sweet, earthen quality. We also had fresh Bastimanti rice with peas and savory garlic Nan bread, served warm with chopped slow-cooked rack of lamb, shrimp Saag with spinach, yogur t, cream, ginger and garlic, mixed vegetable Korma prepared with a fragrant fruit and almond sauce and vegetables in a cashew nut sauce. Their signature lemonade made with fresh lemon and lime, mint and roasted cumin is a favorite for all ages, and a great mixer, too. Tandoori does have a variety of exotic drinks and delicious desser ts like homemade mango ice cream. It’s still the upper west side’s most popular Indian lunch buffet. Tandoori is located at 210 West 94th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues. Call them at 212-932-7720 or visit them on the web at: www.tandoorimanhattan.com and see the food for yourself. Celebrating
Kevin McKenzie
By Yona Zeldis McDonough
Some twenty-odd years ago, Kevin McKenzie’s stellar career as a ballet dancer was winding down. A native of Vermont, he’d trained at the Washington School of Ballet, was awarded a silver medal at the Sixth International Competition in Varna, Bulgaria, and had been a leading dancer at both the National Ballet of Washington and The Joffrey Ballet before joining American Ballet Theater in March of 1979. He was made a Principal Dancer the following December, and performed with the company until 1991. McKenzie’s second act seemed to be unfolding away from the glittering stages of New York. He had spent close to a year at the Washington Ballet doing an apprenticeship in leadership. “I was ready to move into the next phase—artistic associate, choreographer, teaching, ballet master, scheduling,” he says, seated behind the desk of and still graceful man, he seems as poised as a civilian as he was as a dancer. “I fully expected to stay in Washington.” But around that time, Jane Hermann, co-director of American Ballet Theater, was stepping down and McKenzie heard—through the grapevine, not directly— that he was on the short list as her successor. The news came as quite a surprise. “ABT had not been on my radar,” he recalls.
Resident March 2012
Those were trying years for the venerable company; ABT was in dire straights and there was serious talk of its merging with The Joffrey. McKenzie was asked to co-direct the new hybrid with Gerald Arpino, Joffrey’s co-founder and long-time Associate Director. McKenzie thought this was a terrible idea and was not shy about saying so. He pointed out that while merging the two companies may have been a prudent business decision, artistically it made no sense at all. In his view, American Ballet Theater needed to remain an entity unto itself, albeit one with new leadership and a new executive director. Clearly, his passionate conviction was persuasive because two months later, he was asked to usher the company into what turned out to be not only the next decade, but also the next century. McKenzie bid Washington good-bye and came back to New York to assume the reins just observed. And I’m a good observer.” It was only after this initial period that he because everyone wanted it to succeed,” he says modestly. The dancers were proud that one of their own was at the helm and did everything they could to support him. “I’m not a visionary, but I have vision.” And according, to McKenzie, artistic vision has to be consistent, but it also needs a corrective as time goes on. “ABT is the nation’s ballet company,” he explains. “We are exemplary in dancing the classics, yet we must strive to Although McKenzie had been interested in developing as a choreographer, he claims that he was not a good enough choreographer for ABT. But he knew he could Ratmansky, a former dancer and director of the Bolshoi Ballet. Ratmansky’s brilliant interpretation of the Nutcracker was received to great acclaim when danced by ABT at City Center. “He was my ideal before I even knew who he was,” says McKenzie. Ratmansky’s version of The Firebird will be part of the anniversary celebration for McKenzie on June 12, 2012.

When asked what he thought were among his most important accomplishments over the last two decades, McKenzie was quick to mention the establishment of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. The decision to create the school was an incremental process. Twenty years ago, ABT didn’t even have an education department, so in the mid 1990s, McKenzie established one. The logical next step was a series of satellite summer schools in cities such as Detroit, Alabama, Texas designed to identify centers of talent all over the country. From there, McKenzie established a second company, a two-year program headed by John Meehan. This company was designed as a feeder into the main company, but McKenzie soon realized that the dancers had him understand the necessity of a school.
disparate nature of their training meant that they had different ideas but they were able to come together on certain key issues, and in 2004, the Jacqueline Kennedy divided by age, which is outlined in the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum. Each level is designed to be sensitive to the developmental needs of the group. “We make sure we give young dancers age-appropriate material and they are not put on point creating young dancers healthy in mind and body. “And if there is a problem, we catch it early discipline, McKenzie’s attitude is a wholesome and welcome alternative. What’s in store for this monumental company that is home to both local and international talent? “We don’t need to reinvent the world,” McKenzie says thoughtfully. “What we need to do is embrace any indication, it seems clear that McKenzie’s hopes will come to glorious fruition.

There are few places in the world in which Beethoven, Ravel and Stravinsky can be heard as beautifully as at the New York Philharmonic. Recently a good friend and I had the opportunity to hear the wonderful sounds of these three giants of the orchestral world; and all were the perfect accompaniment to the unseasonably warm weather we have been having and it was suggested to me that there are few things more exciting, more exhilarating and more exalted than a night at Avery Fisher Hall. Alan Gilbert, Music Director of the Philharmonic, conducted Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements and Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Concerto has been called “the Mount Everest of violin concertos” and Beethoven’s “tenth symphony with violin obbligato.” It is his only concerto for the instrument. The work is dynamic throughout and it is easy to understand why it has become part of the standard repertoire and considered the best violin concerto ever written. Under Mr. Gilbert’s watchful gaze, the orchestra played sharply and with focus. The already moving and dramatic work was made even more powerful by the expert playing of the members. And I found the overall atmosphere to be momentous, moving and one that I won’t soon forget. Indeed, my friend who came with me – a complete novice – found the piece to be deep and penetrating and at the end of the piece he asked me a

the piece. In essence, I was impressed by Mr. Gilbert and his team to spark interest in a piece. Moving onto Stravinsky and my friend immediately asked me to describe the sound. The word dissonance sprang to mind, but mixed and tinged with melody. It harkens back to an earlier form of symphonic music. And though one might make the argument that Stravinsky protested too much when he in Three Movements, he allowed that it may have been inspired “by this our arduous time of sharp and shifting events, of despair and hope, of continual torments, of tension, and, at last, cessation and relief.” The last piece we heard was Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2. It is rightly considered Ravel’s strongest work. The composer was commissioned to compose a ballet based on the pastoral romance of Daphnis and Chloé, as told in a 3rd century poem by the Greek, Longinus. He had in mind “a vast fresco painting, less in keeping with antiquity than with the Greece of my dreams, like that imagined and depicted by late-18th century French artists,” By the end of the night we appreciated heard. Perfect for a romantic date or lovers of orchestral playing, I urge you to visit at least once. If you do, you’ll see what they mean when they say it’s the best ensemble in the world. Resident

While the best and brightest of the Spring collections are just hitting stores now, we are already looking forward to next Fall’s collections that were just showcased during New York Fashion week. What was remarkable about this season is the dichotomy between the old and new guards of fashion with many downtown and newer designers opting to show at the hip and cool Made by Milk at Milk Gallery while contemporary designers and the old guard showed at the tents at Lincoln Center. However there were a

Box, the smallest venue at the Tents. Next season there will be something for everyone, and retailers will have a tough time choosing.
Beauty Trends Next season nails will be your biggest accessory as they are treated like a canvas with wild patterns, saturated colors, triple French manicures, ombre effects and adornments.
For makeup palettes skin shines through with natural looks that punctuate either a smoky lined eye or a softer red lip, never both. Rachel Roy showed a beautiful smoky neutral eye using shimmering taupes against an otherwise nude face.
Accessories Watch for the return of lady like accessories like hats, structured purses, cap toe pointy shoes, and architectural statement jewelry. Lia Sophia showed Art Deco inspired rock crystal statement necklaces that are a perfect complement with Fall’s palette. Monique Lhullier used the waist as a focal point for her collection with a bold cinching belt that perfected the hourglass silhouette against her femme fatale collection based on a palette of red and black.

Color and Texture Color is here to stay. Complementing the usual rich Fall palette of sienna, chocolate, and russet browns are touches of Byzantine bronze and gold. Blacks and neutral greys are paired with rich jewel tones and primary brights. QVC presented a breezy Spring collection & Olivia had the usual mix of vintage inspired fun colorful sparkly party frocks in long and short lengths with plenty of embellishments like fur toppers and peplum details at the waist. BCBG showed languid silhouettes with geometric juxtapositions of color blocking simulating a 70s Bauhaus style while Herve Leger layered structured harnesses over his signature couture
bandage dresses to create a unique blend of hard and soft. Known for her prints and ladylike pieces, Milly’s collection had a French used a palette of black with cobalt, yellow and hot pink. Whether on leather or patterned tweeds she showed leather sheaths with swaths of color and also played with volume and proportions by pairing heavy tweed jackets and coats with full miniskirts. While color and prints are no stranger to Nanette Lepore, for Fall she added touches of handcrafted details to her sunny palette. One of the standouts is her sumptuous burgundy coat, which will be the color of the season.
Touches of Luxury While we are still far from the heady excesses of 2000, there was no shortage of luxury embellishments and layering in next Fall’s collections. Perhaps it’s optimism of the new economy or is an embellished crystal bustier gown or an edgy androgynous circuit and red carpet events. Badgley Mischka showed their main line side by side with Byzantine gold and bronze woven throughout the collection it would be goddess lace gowns or on supple boucles and tweeds for day. The Mysterious & Bewildering Marc
What’s in a phrase or response? Is it just that particular word or is it how it is said? Marc Salem, the world-renowned Mentalist and a student of the human mind for over thirty years, would say it is the latter. As an academic he holds advanced degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and New York University and has been on the faculty of several major universities for close to two decades. He is considered one of the world’s foremost authorities on non-verbal communication. How the mind creates reality and meaning has been his major focus. And I had the pleasure of speaking with him to understand how this works, his new show and how he is so good at predicting what people are thinking.
Salem By Christopher A. Pape
NYR: You live on the West Side and you’re returning to the city with a show called: Mind Over Manhattan. Can you tell us about it? Marc Salem (MS): I had a previous show called Mind Games. This is much more Manhattan based. It will be more about my experiences in New York. It will be based on the audience with mind games attached but with the loftier goal of pleasing all Manhattanites. NYR: Can you give us an example of what you will do during the show? MS: For example, I have a number of envelopes and one has cash and the others only have a prize. Hopefully, I give away the prizes and keep the my intuition versus the audiences’ intuition and I read some non-verbal cues. Also, I distinguish between truths and lies - all in a nonthreatening environment. It’s all very fun. NYR: Is that something you do in person or can do this over the phone? Is it possible to do this without the human connection? MS: I usually need the human connection, but I’ll give you an example of how this works. Think of a number 1 to 4. Do you have it? NYR: Yes. MS: Is it three? NYR: Yes. How did you know that? MS: Because I already used all three other numbers. Although ‘to’ is not a number, your mind processes it that way and you almost automatically go for the unique number. NYR: Most people fall for that? MS: Yes. NYR: And that’s across education and socioeconomic levels - it doesn’t matter? MS: I do the show around the world. And if there is one thing it’s taught me, it is: how much the same we really are. Sure, non-verbal responses vary across cultures, but some are innate and some that we are born with.

La Promenade des Anglais, in the heart of Chelsea and in the iconic London Terrace Gardens, is a sleek and delicious new restaurant from acclaimed chef and owner Alain Allegretti. Known for his savory Provençal and Niçoise creations, Mr. Allrgretti has branched off to the wider Mediterranean, encompassing Italy (he is, to be clear, of Italian heritage and upbringing) and Spain. From the instant a good friend and I walked through the doors, we knew we were in for a treat. With a clean and modernist interior, La Promenade des Anglais sits at the vanguard of restaurants in the city; and we were so pleased to be able to experience its exciting combination of hip atmosphere, delectable food and professional service. The menu is organized in such a manner as to encourage sharing; and that’s just what we did. Gorging ourselves on the multitude of well-prepared options was easy and dishes were presented that we showered with praise and admiration. We loved the whipped ricotta with thyme and honey and served with grilled country bread or the perfection. However, two standouts emerged – the prosciutto and clam croquettes and the roasted baby artichokes. The croquettes were truly exceptional – served with Espelette chili oil – a variety of chili pepper
that is found in the Basque region of France and gave nice depth to the dish. And those baby artichokes were simultaneously tender and crispy. We loved the woodsy element and devoured the plate. We then moved onto a sweetbread and scallop dish that made me swoon for all creations by Allegretti. He paired these two beautifully prepared meats with roasted asparagus, bone marrow, Niçoise olives, tomato and veal jus. It was simply spectacular. The meatiness of both the scallop and the sweetbread melded and complimented each other exceedingly well and we loved the succulent marrow with the salty olives and refreshing tomatoes. The restaurant also has some spectacular main courses and pastas that are noteworthy and should be tried. Yet, mention should also be made of their outstanding cocktail list. My guest and I thoroughly enjoyed their lavender lemonade with lavender infused vodka, lavender honey and fresh lemon. It was light, airy and a true winner. Whichever dish or drink that you try, I am try you will be pleased with it. It is clear Mr. Allegretti has hit a homerun with this new venture. All the bells and whistles are here for you to enjoy your meal. From hip interior, friendly staff and thoughtfully prepared food; I know that you won’t go wrong by trying it out.

meal, every bit was powerful, exhilarating and bold. We started with the restaurant’s famed popovers, bread that resembles a mix of the horn of cornucopia and a croissant. There is no meal more quintessentially New York than a good steak dinner. And there are few steakhouses in New York who provide the level of food and service like BLT Steak. And yet, there is more to this restaurant than the thrill of eating a perfectly prepared steak. After a visit there recently, it became abundantly clear that the restaurant has an atmosphere that speaks of the monied class and an attentiveness of service which is professional without being intrusive. Without a moment’s pause, I must admit that dinner at BLT Steak ranks as one of the best steak dinners I’ve ever had. From the moment we sat down to the end of our
all the restaurant had served, I would have left a happy man. However, as the meal continued I was converted as a zealous plentiful. Their crab cake served with Meyer lemon and a radish salad. It was a pleasant combination of refreshing and hearty. And we especially loved the crispness of the radishes. The most memorable of all these dishes were the grilled double cut smoked bacon which was savory and salty goodness most pleasurable creation was, he might respond: a slab of smoke bacon. We then began in earnest with the main
dishes and the sides that joined then. Being the steak fanatic that I am and knowing the restaurant’s reputation, I was inclined to order the porterhouse for two. Of course, I had the kitchen cook it to rare perfection (as all steaks must be eaten). We loved the luxuriousness of the cream in the creamed spinach and the fried goodness of the onion rings. If you are looking for more than just great steak come visit BLT Steak. With a hip atmosphere (it’s very Manhattan) and excellent service, the restaurant stands out from the crowd. But beyond that, they are serving superior food (both steak and nonsteak options). Since my visit I have returned and have found it to be just as good, just as memorable and just as rewarding. Why York knows, BLT Steak is one outstanding restaurant.

[LAST WORD] THE IMPORTANCE OF TRAVEL
NEW YORKERS ARE SPOILT. There I said it. Perhaps it’s not the most popular position for an Editor-inChief of a New York based magazine to take, but it’s the truth. Every culture and every nation is represented; and whatever cuisine we have an urge for, from haute barnyard to Ethiopian, can be found within the limits of our fair city. And yet, how many of you (including you, your family and friends) rarely, if ever, leave the island? As I write this I am sitting in Newark International Airport on my way to Mexico. Though I’ve been around the world (both for personal and professional reasons), I have never been to Mexico. I feel ashamed, our southern neighbor, with its fair shores and spicy food, is there for the visiting. For those that travel for a living, this doesn’t apply to you. But for those and get yourself to Europe? Asia? The time is now. Not later. I’m sick and tired of people always telling me later. Why is later better? Go now!
Resident March 2012
Literally, there is a place for everyone. Beaches – think Caribbean or the Maldives. Want culture – think Italy or Japan. Crave food – France or China. And the list goes on. I happen to be going to Todos Santos in Baja. I hear the beaches are sublime and the food exquisite. So I ask: who could ask for anything more? Yes, I admit that there are plenty of inconveniences. I can’t think of anyone (including myself) that enjoys the crowd, wait and the staff ’s insufferable attitude at an airport. How about the long plane ride where the ride reminds one of a cattle in steerage? Or why you neither speak the local language and the local population doesn’t speak English? But for all of that (and that’s a lot), I still contend that it’s worth it. Don’t believe me? Just think of the pictures and tales you’ll be able to pass
to the next generation and that should be enough to spark you. I guess I get the travel bug from my mother, who in her youth, traveled around the world – living in the rainforests Puerto Rico to the hilltops of sunny Tuscany. Why not use one of our travel stories as an aid or as inspiration? Throughout destination and the exotic locale editorialized. The whole Resident staff takes pride in bringing our readers only the best, so don’t just discard our advice. Use and embrace it! Lastly, from an Italian to all the Irish (and those that are Irish at heart) out there – Happy St. Patrick’s Day. –CHRISTOPHER PAPE
