Hooray for May! Everything’s coming up roses here at NY Resident. Jane Seymour, the incomparable and multi-faceted legend, graces our cover. It’s swell, it’s great – we have the whole world on our plate; and Jane was more than gracious, more than a wonderful mother, wife, actress - she is a true Renaissance woman. She paints, designs jewelry, donates to charity, starts foundations and between all of that – raises children! I know that you will love the piece as much as I loved interviewing her. Not only that, she looks amazing! I’ve always been in love with Jane and this just synched the deal! Michael Tucker is also featured. From L.A. Law fame, Mr. Tucker is an at bookstores now! I sat down with him for an in-depth interview and he was New York’s stars. He’ll be contributing a monthly column on how to dress. We are very excited!
versatility and talent are legendary in August. Not quite sure what’s going on after that, but no fear – you will be pleased! What would be an edition without the best in travel? This month is no different. From Hawaii, Chile to the historic Waldorf=Astoria, we’ve got it covered. With a team that scours the world for only the best, we have learned many tricks of the trade and are more than willing and wanting to let you know all about it! and summer camps that will impress. Our dining section is just as strong (don’t forget about our new video component on resident.com); theater and arts are hesitate to use us as your guide. We have everything a New Yorker needs to know. contributors, who was just named faculty member of the year at St. Francis
Lastly, at NY Resident we’ve got nothing to do but hit the heights, I can tell, wait and see – that nothing is going to stop until we’re through because everything is coming up roses! Join us for the ride!

Jane Seymour has graced the movie and television screens for decades and has done so with elegance, intelligence, poise and beauty. From her days as a Bond Girl to her hit television series, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, she has achieved much success. But beyond that, she is dedicated to charitable causes through her Open Hearts Foundation and most of all, is a passionate mother whose four children give her pride, joy and according to her, are her proudest accomplishment.
Jane took the time out to speak with us, granting an hour-long conversation that discussed her celebrity, her perceptions of being a “sex” symbol, her philanthropic causes, her mother’s influence on her and what it means to be a mother. She was nothing but wonderful and I hope you love the interview as much as I loved conducting it. Continued on the next page

New York Resident (NYR): Before we begin, I just want to tell you how much I loved Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. That was an important show for me and quite literally in my top three favorite shows as a child. Jane Seymour (JS): So you’re how old? NYR: I’m 28. JS: Well, my kids are similar in age and actually grew up on the set. The show had a lot of impact on people that I meet. A lot of doctors came out of that; a lot of women doctors. It’s amazing; it still plays every day, all over the world. It’s in ninety-eight countries. NYR: You are synonymous for a glamorous life – being a Bond Girl in Live and Let Die in 1973. So can you tell us, after so many years of success, how you still do it? JS: I don’t think of it as years of success. I just think that I’ve been very fortunate to have some great roles and some of the movies were better than others. I don’t necessarily live this glamorous life that everyone thinks I do. I’ve raised children, we grow our own vegetables, we cook – we are pretty much major homebodies unless there is some major event or charity that we go to. As a family, we like to make a difference for other people. We are not very Hollywood – we are actually the opposite of that.
positive in their life and in the lives of others. This was very much my mother’s philosophy which is when times are tough or when challenge happens the instinct is to close of your heart and to keep it to yourself. But, if you could open your heart and be in the present moment and reach out to someone else – solutions, purpose and love will come into your life.
NYR: For a younger generation, you are considered a “sex” symbol. How does that make you feel?
JS: The collection is a byproduct of all of this. It originally started off as a painting. I’m a full time artist. I show my art off all over the country. And people were really responding to the image by itself but also to the sentiment because there is not one of us, who at some point in our lives, who haven’t needed to open our hearts. No matter the cause it’s important to stay open and positive. In the foundation we honor people who have taken challenge and turned it into an opportunity to help countless numbers of people.
NYR: Can you tell us how your jewelry
JS: It’s good for a laugh. You know, it’s really fun because I get to play these wonderfully inappropriate older women and I’d never thought that I’d get to play these kinds of characters. I love comedy, so for me, Wedding Crashers was a fantastic opportunity to show producers and directors that I was not a one-trick pony. People are always surprised NYR: Americans revere the British for their sense of humor – I guess you also get to play off that a little bit? JS: It’s a different sense of humor, but I’ve lived in America since 1976 so I feel equally American and English. NYR: That’s a perfect segue because I was going to ask if you get back to England; do you miss it? JS: I get back a lot. Last year, I was there for three months making a movie called Austinland. I play a very ridiculous character. NYR: On a different note, I always ask all
Resident May 2012
of my interviewees, what charities are you involved with? JS: My husband, James Keech and I work with the American Red Cross and at one point we went to Africa and saw what was really going on there. We came back and we decided that we wanted to make a difference. It’s ridiculous that people are living without acceptable for an animal, in this country, to live in. A lot of people would ask us: what do you support? So what we decided to do was to form our own foundation called the Open Hearts Foundation. And the philosophy of the organization is that we help people to overcome adversity and create something
The bottom line is that James and I are very involved with the foundation. It works on many different levels and our idea was not to reinvent the charity. It was to highlight the stories of people we know and maybe we don’t know who have taken a challenge and turned it into an opportunity to help other people. Go to www.openheartsfoundation.org for more information. Back to the jewelry, I happened to make one piece to wear for myself when my mom had had a stroke. So in her honor and just to remind me of her I made a single necklace that I wore and I would touch it and it would put me in the right frame of mind when I was performing on Dancing with the Stars.
And randomly, Kay Jewelers saw the piece and loved it. They asked if they could do something with it and we did. It’s just been a fantastic journey. The pieces are just great and people are in love with it and they are using it in many different ways. It’s very meaningful to many people and the sentiment is what people are responding to. Best of all, its inclusive of many different faiths and that’s pretty rare to have something that everyone can agree on. NYR: You are going to be featured on our May cover, which is obviously the month in which Mother ’s Day falls – tell us how that holiday, inspires you. JS: Being a mother, I think Mother’s Day should be every day. I can’t think of a better image than the open heart because a mother’s heart has to be open to raise a child. Any child who has loved or cared about their mother realizes that an open heart is way to link with them and to process the changes in your relationship. It’s a way to express your love for them. NYR: What is a typical Mother’s Day for you?
vacation spot we were staying – like lettuce plants – just to make sure we had enough to eat! NYR: On a lighter note, what was your favorite project to work on? JS: Obviously, Dr. Quinn was such a large project that it would be hard to ignore. It was just like a family working on that show. It was very life-changing. In terms of a lot
JS: Normally all the kids get together and they write a card and write something beautiful. They create something special and unique for me, for Mother’s Day. NYR: Speaking of Mother’s Day, what was the memory you most remember about your mother? JS: We didn’t have very much money and mother had survived WWII in a concentration camp for three and half years. So wherever we went it was always about the food and so we would sit in a car, an old jalopy, and we’d have tins of cookies or crackers under our feet and on the roof rack we would have plants – my mother would actually bring plants with her to plant at the
NYR: What achievement in your career stands out? JS: It is very exciting when you are nominated or win an award because your peers have voted for you. Or, like when I received the Order of the British Empire, your country of origin honors you for the work you are doing as a humanitarian - that is very special. But I don’t think that life is about awards. I think when someone tells me that I have great children and that they are really great people and talented – that always thrills me. NYR: The name of the magazine is NY Resident, obviously you aren’t one…
of fun, Somewhere in Time – Christopher Reeves and I were very close and we had a great time making that movie and I think it really shows. War and Remembrance is a movie that I starred in which still impacts me to this day. It was shot over nine months, all over Europe. It was a movie about the holocaust and that whole part of my parents’ life became very real. I became as close to that period as one gets without actually being in it.
JS: I might as well be because I come to NY quite a lot. Some of my closet friends live in the city. What I love about it is that I come in and do everything a New Yorker would do over a few months in a few days. NYR: Favorite thing to do, to eat or to see in the city? JS: I always go to the galleries and museums because as an artist I want to see what the latest exhibits are. I love going to the theater. And I have many favorite places to eat. But I love going to Ruby Foo’s. I love it because I can invite anyone and everyone; we can have a table and the food comes very quickly; its ridiculously delicious and then you can walk to the theater. NYR: Working on anything new? JS: I’ve got the movie Lake Effects coming out on the Hallmark Channel on May 6th. It’s their Mother’s Day movie. I play the mother and it’s all about the mother and her daughters. It’s all about perceived choices – about three women who learn about each other after the passing of the father. It’s just a lovely movie; it just totally got me. My daughter’s getting married in three weeks. That’s a huge Mother’s Day experience. I’m

WILDWOOD CREST’S BEST KEPT SECRET
I arrive on the Big Island on a warm, January afternoon to discover whale-watching season is in full swing. I’m talking 8,000 humpbacks on sabbatical from Alaska, and I am about to be surrounded by them. In other words, I booked a 7-night cruise with American Safari Cruises, and, coincidentally, I have a front-row seat. Fortunately, I don’t have to wait long to see them. While at sunrise yoga the next morning, I spot spouts of water in the distance. And it doesn’t end there. By day

three we witness a 20-minute display of male whales showing off for a female. This continues long enough for us to snap some pretty incredible photos. The best part is, since we are cruising on a 36-passenger yacht, we don’t have to stick to an itinerary. When we happen upon an amazing feat of nature, we stay put. “The bigger ships don’t always slow down for the scenery,” says expedition leader Nitakuwu Barrett. “We listen to see what guests like and cater to that.”
On the last day, I am lounging on the upper carrying six cruise-goers. Two whales swim right next to them. It was sheer luck they surfaced so close to the boat; dumb luck on my part for not partaking in the skiff ride. Yet, I don’t have to pout for long; a whale swims under the yacht and comes up for air near the stern. Now, I am within feet of this majestic mammal, who likely weighs in end to the week.
After the cruise, I shift gears to discover the unpolished side of Maui. Little did I know when I decided to stay on the eastern side of the island that I’d get to zip along one of the world’s most gorgeous drives: the road to Hana. That’s 1,617 curves and 54 one-lane bridges to get to the remote town of Hana. By remote I mean, my expansive sea ranch cottage at Travaasa Hana has no television, no clock; just the crashing of waves and the
occasional cow mooing in the distance. You see, Travaasa Hana is one of the few allinclusive resorts here. And it’s touted as an experiential travel destination, which suits me well. “Hana lends itself to really interesting experiences,” says Mark Stebbings, Travaasa Hana’s general manager. “It’s priceless Hawaii; one of the things we try to do here is keep it real.”
The last leg of my Hawaiian escapade is Kauai, the oldest of the eight major Hawaiian Islands and the most isolated. Just imagine the jungles of Jurassic Park, and you’re picturing Kauia’s North Shore.

My friends and I opt for a half-day hike along the Kalalau Trail. Much to my dismay, however, as we drive from Kapaa to the northern part of the island, the sky is a foreboding gray. The bloated clouds squeeze out fat raindrops. Fortunately, by the time we arrive at the Napali Coast Wilderness State Park, though, the deluge stops. Within
Here, I splash gleefully through rust-colored puddles, scramble up small waterfalls and traipse along the topsoil left mushy by the recent rain. I’m so fascinated with the all-encompassing beauty — from the neon green moss to the gentle breeze wafting through the mango trees — I have to remind myself to look to my right every few minutes for a peek at the welcoming turquoise water below. All the while, I glance up at the collection of weathered mountains, perpetually wrapped in clouds. This is, no doubt, very high on my
My day begins with hatha yoga, at the open-air studio facing the ocean, with a light breakfast afterward. By 10 a.m., I’m learning the art of coconut husking. Soon after, I picnic on Hamoa Beach and opt for a lomi lomi massage. Later, I chow down on mahi mahi while listening to live ukelele music. Each night I am blissfully exhausted and thrilled to snooze with the balcony doors open.

After a day at the beach, there descends a champagne chilled crowd on the Viceroy Hotel, where there is amiable noshing of sushi and sliders before dining out.
Dining should be a competitive sport in Anguilla. The rules are simple – prepare impeccably fresh food, serve it on a beachfront property (or on the beach itself), with a superior wine list and casual attire. Grilled red snapper is a national staple, though the local Anguillan pumpkin soup, at Barrel Stay, with coriander and chilli oil is not to be missed. An exceptional experience at Barrel Stay may be topped off for New Yorkers whose vehicles spin out (think snow, insert sand); the whole restaurant (guests and wait staff) cheerfully troops out to help, and proprietor Jill (who gives a dramatic rendition to each of the evening’s specials) keeps a tow rope in the trunk of her car for this very purpose! By Bob & Sandy Nesoff For adventure buffs there really isn’t much left to explore on this planet and it’s too early for true space tourism. Of course there are some jungles in Africa and South America, but for real luxury while sampling the “wilds,” try Alaska. The 49th state is so huge that there was a standing joke about an said: “If you’re not quiet, we’ll split our state in two and make Texas the third largest in the country.” That pretty much tells it all. There are cities-Juneau, Anchorage-Ketchikan and little hamlets too numerous to name. It’s still a fact of life in Alaska that many of its cities are unreachable by road simply because, there are no roads. Places such as Ketchikan are reached either by air or sea. Cruising up the Inside Passage you see waterfront cabins in deep wilderness that dot the waterway. Almost all have both a means of ingress and egress. It must be somewhat oxymoronic for those residents to look out the front windows of cabins located in remote woodlands and watch as ships such as the the Inside Passage. Announcements indicate that we are approaching the Hubbard Glacier and there is a sudden rush of passengers heading out to retrieve their cameras. Within minutes the railing is lined with budding photographers waiting for “that shot.” And they get it as the glacier “calves,” splits with huge chunks of ice sliding into the sea every few minutes. The excitement from the gathered passengers below is palpable as the captain maneuvers the ship as close as legally possible to the Hubbard in order to afford the passengers the best possible view. In the middle of the excitement a stowaway appears on around, he wants to sample life aboard a cruise ship. Like a Hollywood star he stands, posing amid a gaggle of amateur photographers. He’s there for a good half hour before tiring of the tourists and taking wing. Leaving the Hubbard and heading to Ketchikan, the water was rife with small ice bergs that had calved from glaciers kissing the edge of the continent

The accommodations were somewhat less than Upper Class on Virgin Atlantic but the sights from the window were spectacular. The Cliffs of Mohr in Ireland draw tens of thousands of visitors, but they can’t match the majesty of ice cliffs formed by Alaskan glaciers.
If the fjords looked amazing from the air, they were absolutely photographs of waterfalls that had been little more than dry gulches until the rains came earlier that day. There were seals in the water and on rocks, eagles coasting overhead like feathered gliders and a variety of animals and birds that were incomparable anywhere else. The speed boat skimmed the water and rounded the islands from the fjords back to Ketchikan depositing passengers only yards from the center of town or what passed as the center of a town. Ketchikan is a small village that still hasn’t found its way into the modern world with the possible exception of the tourist-centric shops that line the waterfront, a major source of income here for the year-round residents and those who head south as soon as the chilled air comes in over the mountains. Even the tourist traps have as unique an assortment of souvenirs as can be found at any port, anywhere in the world. They range from ivory carved walruses to Indian and Eskimo jackets and the furred boots called mukluks. You can even purchase (for about $300 or more) a very unusual item that could be the talk of your Friday night poker or canasta game, an oosick. And you’d be the only one in your town who knew what an oosick was. They come carved and mounted on stands or by themselves. They look like a bone club or a femur. In actuality (are you ready?) an oosick is a walrus penis. That’s right. You heard us. We got ours from a friend in the area who picked it up at a

A trip to St. Lucia is not your typical trip to the Caribbean. Yes, there are beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters, lush landscape and even a rainforest. But it’s perhaps the Piton Mountain, the majestic volcanic peaks and the trademark of this island that makes you feel you’ve escaped to a far away, romantic paradise. Some refer to St. Lucia as the Hawaii of the Caribbean and after a trip to the island you’ll understand why.
The all-inclusive Morgan Bay Resort, a beachfront resort set amidst twenty-two acres of tropical gardens, is one of the island’s premier all-inclusive properties. The resort has four pools, an abundance of restaurants and bars, including Tommy’s Hilltop Bar, known for its magical views and dramatic sunsets. There are complimentary water sports including snorkeling and motorized sports and even banana boats for the kids. Morgan Bay is great for families or couples; their Kid’s Club offers fully equipped activity centers from newborns to teenagers. Kids have their own children’s pool and there is a separate adult-only pool with a swim-up bar, in addition to two other family pools. This place can’t be beat for families! The prices are very affordable and being an all-inclusive you won’t have to worry about every little thing (like a cocktail or two) while your kids enjoy all the amenities. The accommodations are excellent and their décor minimal, with dark wood and white wicker furnishings and large soaking tubs. While the resort is pretty low key, there are many bars and restaurants on its premises to choose from for a fun evening out. The beach, although small, is immaculate; there’s no making your way through mounds of seaweed just to reach the water!
Morgan Bay is an all-inclusive so you’ll want to take advantage of each of their four restaurants located on the grounds. The Palms restaurant serves international buffet style and a la carte cuisine. Bambou sits on the water’s edge for al fresco dining, Morgan’s serving French Creole cuisine. If you want to get away from the resort for an evening restaurant. For the last forty years it’s been serving the freshest Caribbean ingredients fused together with exquisite French cooking methods. The curried chicken served in a coconut shell The ambience here is quite unique with a wood and stone open-air structure adorned with Caribbean art. During a full moon nights, tables are set under the stars.

Off property, there’s so much to do on this island you’ll likely want to spend at least a week. Most activities can be arranged directly from the resort, saving you time for more St. Lucia on a Friday evening, join in the fun at the Gros Islet street party, the longest running street party in St. Lucia or head over to the Anse-La-Ray Fish Fry, located on the west coast of the island, to sample local red snapper and lobster. For shopaholics, the Morgan Bay Resort can arrange a half-day shopping spree both duty free and locally in the capital city, Castries. Visit the archives and Morne Fortune where you can over look the entire city of Castries. To really enjoy the scenery and for a great afternoon jaunt, take a relaxing day cruise on catamaran. Morgan Bay will arrange for you to sail the west coast to the historic town of Soufriere with the majestic Pitons towering above. During the cruise you’ll visit the Sulphur Springs and picturesque tropical Botanical Gardens, for a swim and snorkeling before heading back to the resort. For the thrill seekers, take a zip line across the rainforest or trek through the tropical landscape in search of the rare St. Lucian Parrot, Iguana and Green Monkey. If you’re really into outdoor adventure, take a hike up one of those majestic Pitons! Gros Piton is the easier climb of the two and guides can be arranged through the hotel. The park services mandates that guides accompany you on the climb. The harder climb (and more technical) is on the other Piton, Petit Piton.

Gracious fruit bowls and luxurious baths replete with rosemary mint products especially designed by “Essentiel Elements” greet guests as they enter rooms with abundant comfortable seating and sleeping arrangements in earth and muted tones. However, once guests see the balcony views of the mountains and lake, they may never leave their Adirondacks chairs again. Even the most dedicated foodie needs to be pried from the room, for superior dining experiences and spectacular views. However, the weekend of activities for moms and families is worth leaving the room to attend to. Friday has a Family Jeopardy, Saturday is action packed with choices ranging from a Wake Up Walk for Moms to a Tomahawk Throw (for mom’s “with edge”) to Mountain Biking, Disc Golf, Cupcake Decorating, NS Wine Tastings. This culminates in a Sunday brunch. For a retreat for moms, consider the Spa at Mohonk Mountain House, Architecturally designed by Saratoga Associates to “bring the outside in,” by incorporating natural elements into the architecture, design and décor. There is a 2,000 foot “green roof ” garden terrace located near inch planting bed and soil retaining systems complete with drainage. The 30,000 square foot spa wing was carved into a natural glacierformed stone bluff overlooking the lake and has a mineral pool and reading rack and tea/fruit bar. Classes include qui gong, Pilates, cardio mountain treks and strength training. Treatments are their own minivacation. The signature “Mohonk Red” facial starts with an herbal neck wrap and towels infused with Mohonk Red witch hazel grown on the property, before proceeding with a series of progressively more relaxing treatments and scents. TOKYO: a Harmonious Balance between Modernity and Tradition By Michelle Inaba Mocarski
Tokyo is a wondrous city of welcome and beauty. As the memory of last year’s tsunami fades, tourism to Tokyo - and to Japan generally - is increasing every month. Now, come June 1, it will be more convenient than ever for New Yorkers to visit this extraordinary destination. On that day, American Airlines begins direct service from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. Flying to and from Haneda is a traveler’s delight, because it is just a half-hour or less from downtown Tokyo, compared to an hour and a half or more from the more distant Narita Airport. And the mood in Tokyo today is positive and enthusiastic, as it would be expected from a culture where the traditional Buddhist idea of impermanence is so strong. Everything changes, and change is to be celebrated as an how to do it. The city offers its visitors a contemporary mixture of history, art, and culture: the Imperial Palace, museums, lively nightlife, amazing shopping, and incredible dining experiences. Tokyo is the face of a country where past traditions and modernity coexist harmonically.

Speaking of the past, visitors should start by the Imperial Palace, where the Emperor and his family live. The original palace was built in 1888, but it was destroyed by incendiary bombs in May, 1945, almost in the end of World War II. Although the current Imperial Palace was built in the 1960s, its style follows the traditional Japanese architecture. The Imperial Palace is not open to public visitation, but its eastern area, known as East Garden, is. The East Garden has guided tours and is open for visitation on weekdays.

A simple four-hour drive from New York, Kennebunkport is an ideal weekend escape for those looking for a quick getaway. We pick some of our favorite spots in this beautiful jewel of the southern Maine coast. NATURAL LUXURY If you truly want to experience the beauty of Maine, but with all the comforts of a luxury hotel, it doesn’t get any better than Hidden Pond. Tucked away on 60 acres of birch and sweet fern forest, Hidden Pond has been referred to as “the Ritz Carlton of summer camps.” All of Hidden Pond’s beautifully appointed guest cottages feature flat screen TVs, air conditioning, wireless internet, screened porches, outdoor rain showers, Frette linens, fireplaces, and iPod docking stations. Two-bedroom cottages also include full kitchens which can be stocked with your favorites prior to arrival. In
addition, a daily breakfast basket will be delivered right to your door. At Hidden Pond, the hardest part of each day may be deciding what to do next. Wander meandering nature trails, or take a beach cruiser bike and explore Kennebunkport’s winding back roads. Go paddleboarding, learn how to build a bird house, or take a yoga class surrounded by nature at the Farm. Or for a true indulgence, book an appointment at the Tree Spa, nestled into the trees above the lush forest floor. If the beach is more your speed, head to Hidden Pond’s sister property, The Tides Beach Club, where “Beach Tenders” will be sure you have a plush towel, comfy chair and cooler packed with chilled water. They’ll even bring you lunch on the beach. Hidden Pond also features several onsite dining options, including Earth, a collaboration with Boston chef and James Beard Award-winner Ken Oringer. Earth offers farm-fresh ingredients grown on Hidden Pond’s own organic farm, along with local meats, seafood, and cheeses—all overlooking the pond and nightly bonfires. BEACH CHIC If you like the beach, The Tides Beach Club is the place for you. The only hotel overlooking pristine Goose Rocks Beach, The Tides is one of Kennebunkport’s true

“grand dames,” and after an extensive rejuvenation last year, it’s also one of the ‘Port’s chicest resorts. The rooms at the Tides have a soothing seaside ambiance, mixed with surprising and whimsical contemporary touches. This same eclectic mix extends to the common areas, where traditional white wing back chairs and lamps made from sea shells sit side-by-side with “invisible” bar stools and modern art. The Tides has a fun, energetic bar, and also offers dining. Savor an after dinner cocktail while rocking on the expansive front porch, or dine outside on the patio, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smells of the sea. Escape to the beach this summer…without the Hamptons traffic! A CLASSIC...ENHANCED Located in the heart of Kennebunkport’s lively Dock Square, the Kennebunkport Inn has always been a favorite because of its great location, outstanding service, and award-winning restaurant, One Dock. After a just-completed renovation, though, it’s gotten even better. Highlights of the renovation include a new lobby and common area, a sun terrace with outdoor fireplace and cozy deck chaises overlooking the Kennebunk River, and a new bar at One Dock. The changes also extend to One Dock’s menu, with a greater emphasis on small plates that showcase Maine’s abundant local seafood and produce. The Kennebunkport Inn is also a great place to stop by for cocktails, especially
during summer months, with a daily Happy Hour on the patio. IN-TOWN ELEGANCE Across the bridge in Lower Village is the ‘Port’s newest boutique hotel, The Grand. Though just opening this summer, the Grand already promises to be one of the area’s hottest spots. Located on Chase Hill, the Grand’s expansive windows and balconies provide sweeping views of the Kennebunk River and Dock Square. Elegantly appointed rooms offer a slightly urban feel, with soft, warm tones of Saffron and cream, chic furnishings and marble bathrooms featuring gleaming Waterworks hardware.
QUAINT & COZY CHARM Just outside of town are the Cottages at Cabot Cove, the quintessential New England cottage experience. Each of these uniquely designed cottages features a kitchenette and terrace, which is like your own private garden paradise. Take a rowboat or kayak to explore the Kennebunk River, or just hunker down with a picnic lunch or a good book in an Adirondack chair overlooking the Cove. SECLUDED SPLENDOR Down the winding back road from Cabot Cove is the Old Fort Inn. Once a grand hotel in Kennebunkport’s Cape Arundel, the original carriage house and stables have been converted into elegantly appointed, spacious guest rooms. Decorated in a traditional New England style, the rooms feature rich linens, custom wood furnishings, and four-poster beds. Outside, a spacious patio and heated lap pool feature plush chaise lounges, inviting you to soak up the summer sun. Old Fort’s Club House, with its collection of art deco books, deep leather sofas and floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, is a great place to linger. For families looking to stay a while, a chic, three bedroom cottage is available for rent…a homeaway-from-home on Maine’s southern coast. This hidden gem is perfect for couples looking to getaway—tucked just far enough away to be a tranquil oasis, yet minutes from downtown Kennebunkport. Still wondering if you should book a stay in Kennebunkport this summer? Well, stop. Treat yourself. You won’t be disappointed, and the only downside is that you won’t want to leave this beautiful and lively town.

The guest room itself was a haven of comfort, from the king-size bed and and thick bath robes. The view from the balcony revealed River Marsh Marina, where sailboats and yachts dock when they aren’t plying the waters of the Chesapeake. Drinks at Michener’s Library, the spectacular lobby lounge named after the author of the epic novel Chesapeake, kicked off our little getaway. Drinking a glass of wine in front of soaring windows with gorgeous views of the lush 18th green and calm river was simply sublime. Soon it was time for dinner at Bluepoint Provision Company, the resort’s seafood specialty restaurant. the nautical setting. Nature provided a stunning show as the sun dipped below the horizon tinting the Choptank with its deep golden rays. The following morning started with an escape to Sago Spa & Salon. The newly-renovated 18,000-square-foot spa offers a myriad of treatments inspired by the sea. The River Stone full-body massage melted away any tensions and re-energized us for an active day ahead. Strolling along the resort’s private nature trails was an excellent opportunity to admire the local wildlife and natural beauty of the area. Herons stood in watch beside the championship golf course that is famous for challenging golfers while treating them to picturesque holes. After a quick bite to eat at Eagle’s Nest Bar and Grille, located at the Golf Club, we decided to play a game of miniature golf – the perfect choice for non-athletes looking for sporty fun.
When we headed back inside to retrieve our bathing suits for a swim in the three pools, we passed the Grand Ballroom and corridor of meeting rooms. A group of executives was leaving one of the rooms, looking very happy and relaxed. I had heard the resort was a popular destination for corporate meetings and retreats because the resort was full service. I could also easily picture a memorable wedding and reception being held here as well as a family reunion or other special celebration. enclosed Wintergarden, which holds fun “Dive In” movies for children at nighttime. Outside we found lounge chairs beside the horizon pool and gave our drink orders to one of the attendants. He told us that it was time for Ice Cream Happy Hour at Bay Country Market. Every afternoon, the resort’s general store offers ice cream for $1 scoop! As tempting as that was we decided to have lunch by the pool,
which was served to us at our lounge chairs. That night we ate dinner at Water’s Edge Grill where we chose from an array of soups, salads, pasta, seafood, and meat options. I chose the Shrimp Ravioli made with egg yolk, Boursin cheese, pancetta, and parmesan foam. An impromptu visit by Chef de Cuisine Shon Kendrick gave us a rare chance to speak with the chef who created the entrée. It was just one of the many ways Hyatt Chesapeake displays its friendly Eastern Shore hospitality. To end the night, we headed out to the Grand Fireplace to roast s’mores, a beloved tradition for all ages at the resort. As I was roasting the perfect marshmallow, I don’t know if I was memories it evoked of eating s’mores as a child. Regardless, I knew that this trip would be one to treasure for years

I am the mother of four kids, aged eight to fourteen year-old, and trying to launch a business. I live life in 15-minute increments. Our house wakes up at 6:00 am during the week. Getting everyone to eat something is a challenge so I let them eat whatever they want – leftover pasta, soup, macaroni and cheese, cereal, bagels, whatever. Then I either drive them to school, leaving at I usually have appointments racked and stacked as I work with a team located across Korea, India, Vancouver, San Francisco, Mexico City and Honolulu. dying. My son went to a birthday party groaned when I saw it and secretly vowed to get even with the mom. Then my son like gold to him. So, yesterday I went to the pet store to get some accommodations for Medallion and we left with six mollies and an aquarium. Anyway, the six mollies are named – Blaze, Spike, Buster (girl), Anna, Crusoe, and Razor. This morning, I came upon our dog, in his mouth. He had eaten nearly the whole can and I had to wrestle the container from him. Apparently, he had climbed up on the chair and snatched the food. He was utterly remorseless standing his mouth. And he apparently scared a death. My assistant arrives and we crank through as much as humanly possible. Then school pick-ups start at 2:45. Someone helps with the driving but we are both in our respective cars from 2:30 until 6:00 every day. Each child has school, a sport and an instrument. But we also have doctor and dental appointments, birthdays, school orientations, parent conferences, school fairs, major sports events, dances, play dates in all different venues.

I arrive home at 6:00, picking up my thirteen year-old son from tennis along to the door to remind me the bake sale is tomorrow and we promised to send in cheesecake brownies, cut into pieces, bagged and labeled. Luckily, I have preheat the oven and start to make them. I am making dinner at the same time, boiling water for pasta. So it appears to be working out. Then I discover we have no canola oil. I rush to the store to get the oil. I am almost home and my oldest texts me – “just ran out of milk.” I text her back “drain the pasta and I’ll get milk.” As I walk in the door, one of my kids calls me to report an “infestation“ in the kitchen. Sure enough there are a run and douse them with enough “raid” I have three kids to help with homework; one is independent or just refuses to let me see his work. I listen to how everyone’s day went, and then showers, piano practice and a little free time. If I don’t tell them to go to bed, they forget (but if I attempt to send them to bed early, it is treated as a crime committed against children everywhere). Just when I feel like my “sportsmomship” might give out; my kids give me a hug and tell me I’m the best mom ever. I get re-energized and work a little longer as India and Korea are up and working. I have a glass of wine with my husband and ask him about his day. I usually don’t remember his response as I am so exhausted. At ten, I go to sleep. Every Sunday, we look at the calendar addition to the regular routine. I slot them all into the schedule in 15-minute increments. My youngest son likes to “juking.” This is modern-day parent “juking.” And tomorrow I start booking

Babe Ruth Holding Bat Comiskey 1918 After walking into the drab brick building on Brooklyn’s Bedford Avenue, walking through the dark ramp and into the sunlight, one of the greatest revelations of my childhood appeared to me; I was totally awestruck by the colors of Ebbets Field. The bright green grass, the red railings, the shiny royal blue warm-up jackets and stunning hues were a feast to my eyes. The ball park has long ago met its destiny with the wrecking ball, but the art of Graig Kreindler meticulously recreates the baseball scenes of the last century. Brooklyn is now the home of one of the most talented young artists on the contemporary scene. Graig Kreindler comes by his love of baseball by means of nurture. His father is a fanatic Yankee fan, while mom hails from a family steeped in the traditions of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Dad won the naming rights since Graig was named for the Yankee fandom with Dad’s memories of the greats of the ‘50s: Yogi, Joe, Mickey, Roger, Elston, Whitey, Billy, and The Moose. All of this background came into play when, as a student at Manhattan’s School of Visual Arts he was assigned the task of depicting “a relationship”. He opined that the pitcher and catcher’s relationship is one which choice, but “I have a particular fascination with the 1936 Yankees and merited artistic investigation. And so, the focus of his life’s work soon Giants, especially the World Series of that year. It allows me to think of my grandfather, who was a big Giants fan who would have been a centered on his other passion, baseball. little younger than I am now. Although my father wasn’t born until 10 years later, I imagine the two of them sitting in the Polo Grounds together, watching the World Series. It’s just amazing to think that my grandfather saw some of the most amazing players- Ott, Terry, Hubbell, Fitsimmons on the Giants while the Yankees had DiMaggio, I suppose.” Listening to Graig, you understand how lucky this young man is to combine his love of baseball with his great artistic skill; and how lucky we are to be able to see his work.
Jackie Robinson July 2nd Slide 1950 Most amazing about Graig’s work is how he has been able to bring to a young Mickey Mantle hitting a home run at Ebbets Field with Billy Loes on the mound during the 1952 World Series. Graig’s painstaking research for this project so captivated him that accuracy became a cornerstone of the grueling process of meticulously bringing these bygone images to canvas. A turning point occurred when, in 2003, he won a $1,000 scholarship for a painting of a stricken Lou Gehrig in 1939, standing before an array of microphones in preparation for addressing the crowd with his famous farewell speech. As there were no color photos of this event, Graig had to guess what colors

Van Meter, IA and at the Objects and Images Fine Art, Inc. gallery in Bronxville, NY Monday through Friday from 10am to 5pm. We can look forward to seeing his work in the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Negro League Museum. When I asked if his studio was ever open to visitors, Graig answered, “My studio’s always open (by appointment after seeing a color home movie of the Stadium in 1939 at the with my agent Dean Lombardo) to anyone who wants to come by and Museum of Natural History, Graig says he had found the “smoking check it out. I’m always happy to have people come by to talk baseball gun.” After further investigation at the Baseball Hall of Fame, Graig and/or art.” That’s an offer that any baseball fan looking for true color was able to determine the correct color of the Gem ad as well as the colors of the marching band uniforms. Graig says, starting all over, he had to repaint the scene with the accurate colors. Since then, fastidious color research has been the hallmark of his preparation. Follow Graig’s work on Facebook There are pigments which were in use early in the century which are and at www.graigkreindler.com no longer available, making the use of correct colors daunting, but Graig is dedicated to matching the colors perfectly. At the height of society and culture rests only one art form. Every other, from expressionist art, modern dance and orchestral music are merely pretenders and usurpers against the throne in which opera rests. For there is no other art that captures and illustrates the human emotion as does the one invented by the Italians. And there is no other that combines the varied sound of a full orchestra and the clarity and beauty of the human voice. Opera is like a religion. I say this because throughout human history we have built temples, shrines, churches and cathedrals to honor our God (s). This is the same as opera. Don’t believe me? Visit La Scala in Milan or the Opéra National de Paris. But, if you go to the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center? The buildings that comprise the center are so perfectly attuned to our human nature and our desire to create beauty; and our need to always be looking at the stars, even though we are all living in the gutter. Recently, I had the very fortunate opportunity to attend three operas at the Met. These three, all stalwarts of the modern repertoire and all in some way exalting the human spirit, were performed beautifully and with care by the various singers and casts of the different productions. All were sung in Italian but all were not written by Italians.
On our second night, we saw an opera that some say is the pinnacle of human creation, Mozart’s Don Giovanni. It is an opera in two acts, with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. It was premiered by the Prague Italian opera believed it to be an opera buffa, although comedy, drama and supernatural elements. Don Giovanni, a young, arrogant, sexually promiscuous nobleman, abuses and outrages everyone else in the cast, until he encounters something he cannot kill, beat up, dodge, or outwit. And is eventually dragged to Hell by the man he had previously killed in a duel. The Met’s interpretation was bold and sensuous and we loved the strong personalities and voices of the cast. Gerald Finely played the title role and his voice was crisp and bright. His sidekick, Leporello, was played with aplomb by Kyle Ketelsen. We also admired James Morris for his role as the commendatore.
Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.”

arrives in Japan and meets a 15-year-old grand operas. The history of its creation has grown out of proportion to its reality. Many are under the impression that it was commissioned for the opening of the Suez Canal, when in fact it was the Khedive, ruler of Egypt, which commissioned Verdi to write the piece. When Aida opened in Cairo it was brought to Milan (Verdi thinking this it real premiere). Here it was a success as well. The opera tells the story of Aida, an Ethiopian princess, who is captured and brought into slavery in Egypt. A military commander, Radames, struggles to choose between his love for her and his loyalty to the Pharaoh. To complicate the story further, Radames is loved by the Pharaoh’s daughter Amneris, although he does not return her feelings. The performance that I saw in February was absolutely delightful. Violeta Urmana, played the title role, while Radames, was played by the upcoming star, Marcelo Alvarez. Both my guest and I were and stunning scenery. And it was thought and pronounced that Aida must be one of the greatest operas for a novice to see.
love with the American, but he regards their asks for her hand even though he has no intention of bringing her with him when he returns to the States. Blinded by love, she marries him, even though it means turning her back on her family and her faith. Our production had the distinct honor of being conducted by Placido Domingo, whose tempo and sharpness were both appreciated and enjoyed. We loved Patricia Racette, in the role of Cio-Cio San. Her pitch was spot on and her clarity was breathtaking. Her maid, Suzuki, played by Maria Zifchak, was strong and perfectly matched with Patricia’s Cio-Cio San.

Michael Tucker of LA Law is a man whose passions run deeper than just acting. Having made his success on stage and then through TV and film in the 1980’s and 90’s, Mr. Tucker has not been content to rest idly. While no longer vigorously pursuing his acting, he has made a name for himself as an accomplished writer.

New York Resident sat down to talk with him about his new novel “After Annie.” What transpired, however, was a free wielding discussion about his career, his enduring love of his wife, his vacation home in Italy, his children and eventually his new novel. But, from the very start of the interview I knew that this was going to be an exciting discussion and after it I can’t think of a person more “New York” than Michael. Please enjoy.
New York Resident (NYR): The name of the magazine is New York Resident and so we have embarked on interviewing iconic and noteworthy New Yorkers. So tell us, what does it mean to be a New Yorker? Michael Tucker (MT): My wife Jill and I had lived in New York for sixteen years starting in 1971. It’s where we got started, and began our careers in theater and slowly into TV. Our kids were brought up on the Upper West Side. In 1986 both Jill and I got the parts on LA Law. We lived in Los Angeles for eight years and then we moved up to Marin County in Northern California for the next nine years. And one day we looked at each other and asked what was missing; we had a wonderful life, at that point we had a house in Italy, which we still have – what was missing was New York City. So we decided to move back and started our theater careers again. And now we are six blocks from where we originally lived in the seventies and eighties. We went right back to our local bodega, Zabar’s. NYR: What do you like about the Upper West Side; what draws you to there? MT: It’s just home to me. Although it’s not really the perfect area for us because our the parks. We are a half a block from Riverside Park and four blocks from Central Park. We are there all the time. NYR: Tell us how you got started in acting? MT: After high school I went to Carnegie-Mellon Drama School. From there I went to regional theater; eventually ending up in Arena Stage in D.C. and that’s where I met my wife. From there we moved to New York and built up a career here. NYR: How did you land the part on L.A. Law? MT: Steven Bochco is an old friend from mine in college. He wrote and produced the show. He came to New York. He was doing Hill Street Blues at the time. He told us he had a part for Jill and me in a two-part series. He told us he couldn’t pay our way out to L.A. but if you could get yourself out there you guys can play these parts. We had never worked face to face. We never really acted together and it was a revelation. We didn’t realize it at the time but it was an audition for L.A Law. A year later we were on the show. NYR: As an aside, tell us about your house in Italy and why did you choose there? MT: Well it’s in Umbria. It’s in the center of Italy and it’s called the green heart of the country. I had always had this thing that I wanted to buy a house in Europe. We were living in California; Jill was saying I’d love to have a house in the South of France or in Italy, but honey these places are six thousand miles away. A friend of mine kept asking why in the South of France? And I said because it’s so close to Italy. And I said aha! It must be Italy. We were invited to a friend’s birthday party which was being held at the tip of the country. So we decided to make a trip out of it. We rented a car and drove from the very north of Italy down to Apulia, where the party was. The trip took a month and made a vow not to go into a big city. On that trip, we ended up near Spoleto, where our house is. We were chasing down a meal in a farmhouse on the side of a mountain. We met a woman there, an American expat. We asked what she did and she said I sell houses to people like you. And that’s exactly what she did for us. NYR: How did you come to write “After Annie”? MT: a relapse of her breast cancer. And the book is a “what if ” scenario, played out. I couldn’t stop thinking about what my life would be like if I lost her. It happen. Then the characters became other than Jill and me. I had quite a wonderful time writing this book. NYR: Did you always want to be a writer? MT: I think my actual personality is more suited to writing than to acting. I can be a very outgoing person; a very social person, but the real me is not that. I love to work by myself. I like to think about the same things from a different perspective and I adore intimacy. NYR: Lastly, how do you give back to New York? Are you involved with any charities? MT: We go all over the world speaking about our experience with Jill’s two

Sypder Hole is a thought provoking new novel by Bob Nesoff that keeps you intrigued and engaged with each page. Dan Halevi the protagonist is an expatriate now living in Israel and working for the Israeli government. He is an invaluable asset having been a former Green Beret with the US military and involved in many covert operations and is familiar with the Middle East and its myriad of problems. Although this is a novel, it reads like history taking place in every chapter. The possibilities presented are so realistic; it keeps the reader reminded that the probability for destruction of a cataclysmic nature is not farfetched. In this age of nuclear weaponry the fact remains that terrorist groups, as well as, authoritarian states have the capacity to create nuclear bombs that could wipe cities, like New York, off the face of the earth. The author’s story highlights the fact that, as US citizens, we should be very much aware of the threats that are looming about and the risks and action that take place without the average citizen ever being aware of the collective maneuvers of organizations like the CIA, the Israeli Mossad and the MI-6. It’s breathtaking what these organizations do to keep the world safe and out of harm’s way.

Dear Dave, I hate my hair. Really! It’s frizzy, brittle and unmanageable. It looks great when I get it blown out, but then I live in fear of the weather – after all, a little rain or humidity can ruin a beautiful blow out. When I let it dry naturally, I feel like a freak because it often looks wild and out of control. I wouldn’t mind having wavy to curly hair if it looked bouncy and controlled. I don’t want to use a Brazilian treatment because I think the formaldehyde is harmful to my health. I also don’t want to go the Japanese treatment route because I

Soft tendrils to accent your great jaw line... With just a few tweaks and treatments you can have gorgeous bridal hair you’ve always wanted. Dave

When one thinks of haute cuisine one usually thinks of French, Italian or Japanese. Almost no one if polled would venture that Austrian is a cuisine that commands respect, acknowledgment or praise for being delicious and innovative. And yet, this couldn’t be further from the truth. For here in our fair city resides a restaurant so acclaimed and beloved that it is hard to ignore and hard not to love. of New York City dining and has been for over a decade. Owned and operated by Kurt Gutenbrunner (see interview with Kurt for the A Taste of Tribeca article), Wallse sits at the forefront of modern and innovative cuisines. Rightly considered a pioneer among chefs, he has still remained true to his Austrian heritage and culture. Recently a colleague and I enjoyed a meal here and

When it comes to entertainment, Russians have their modesty, and Jelsomino is a perfect example of a new nightlife concept brought to us by the folks behind Mari Vanna. Even if you didn’t grow up with an Italian grandma, try Contorno’s for home-style rustic Italian in the Garment district. The menu is modeled after owner Andrew C. meats. Best of all, during lunch all entrees are $10 or under, and weekend Boozy brunches are priced at $24.95 with an hour of unlimited mimosas and Bellinis.
While areas like the Meatpacking, Lower East side, and West Chelsea have been seeing a fair share of new restaurant openings, this Spring Midtown West has been stealing the spotlight. Newcomer to New York’s Times Square is the world renowned Michelin starred Chinese restaurant, Hakkasan. It has the vibe of a sexy Asian fusion mega restaurant like Buddakan or Tao, with its staff decked in uniforms by Diane von Furstenberg and G Pierce, but the food takes center stage setting it apart from any of its competition. Already a success location in NYC took over nine years, and this is exactly where they want to be- in the epicenter of the Big Apple’s media and tourism hub. Chef Ho Chi Boon has created a modern take on classic haute Cantonese with Osetra caviar, roasted cod with champagne and Chinese honey, dim sum such as XO Scallop shu mai or Crabmeat Soup dumplings.
