Upon meeting Mercedes Masohn, I was enthralled. There are few times, if any, that I am in the presence of a true beauty. She is at once tall, striking and has a face that must be considered a magnet for all men. But beyond that (and it’s a lot), she was down-to-earth, sharp, smart and sassy! Both my creative director and I loved every moment we spent with her, as we conducted our photo shoot with her. I’m so happy to introduce 666 Park Avenue’s sexy siren.

I have always had the entertainment bug, but my parents are more traditional so they always encouraged great schoolwork so that was the road I took. I studied psychology and that’s where I thought I was going to live my life. When I moved to America, a modeling scout discovered me and I did that for some time as well. And I realized I could not balance work along with school. It was too many hours; I was not sleeping. So I stopped and my agent at the time said, “ You have always talked about acting why don’t you, just for fun, go out for

this audition?” It was for the movie, The Break Up. I had so much fun doing it and it just went from there. I have been really lucky. R: Tell us about 666 Park Avenue. What is it like? MM: I’m going to plug it - it’s on ABC on Sunday at 10pm! It’s a really fun show; there is nothing else out there like it. It’s kind of sexy, like a throw back to a soap opera, but with a thriller aspect. There is a lot going on with our things about our past. Each character comes from darkness; all of us are pretty wounded in some way or another. I think in an Agatha Christie sort of way we have all been brought together in the Drake and the building has a lot of

the building with his wife who is played by Vanessa Williams. They are really the puppeteers and all of us go to them wanting something. The building is the heart of all that. If you are good to it its good to you back, but if you are not you pay the price. R: How is it to shoot in NY? MM: I love NY. I lived here before I moved to LA so when they told me we were shooting in New York I was overjoyed. I got to come back to my old friends and my favorite restaurants; I am really comfortable here. It’s a home for me. R: Do you think the show could have MM: Absolutely not! I could not imagine it anyplace else

The whole staff of the Resident would like to thank the Carlton Hotel for the use of their facilities. R: What does it mean to be a New Yorker? MM: I have always described New York as the ex-boyfriend that I still love; the one who got away. So whenever I live somewhere else like LA, LA is the new boyfriend but whenever I come back to New York I feel alive. There is something that just feeds you. Whenever I have to leave New York I get sad. Again it’s the exboyfriend and once you start falling in

MM: Yes, I have a little Chihuahua named Wedgie, who is the love of my life. On Twitter, I have #WedgieWednesday and everyone likes to see him because he does the craziest little things. And he does everything with me - he sleeps with me, he watches me shower. He’s either the most loyal dog or a pervert. I have to say I am dreading the winter with him because he’s an LA dog. Everyone says you have to put boots on him but he refuses to do so!

R: What do you do for fun in the city? MM: I really love hanging out with friends. I’ll have dinner parties at my place or go to new restaurants. Every now and then we will have a drink but it’s mostly oriented around food. Thank God I’m not obese.

as a person of mixed ethnicity? MM: Being multiethnic was certainly interesting. Growing up, kids wanted to put me in a box. Everyone wanted to know what I was and in Sweden where there are a lot of fare skinned, blue eyed, blonde haired people; I was sort of the black sheep. I had a little trouble growing up but, there was this one movie with this little girl who was brown haired and eyed and she looked just like me and I loved culture. When I came to the states I was like wow! It’s really a melting pot; I can look just like everyone else. In acting, it can be a challenge – if they want an ethnic girl I look too Caucasian and if they want a Caucasian I look to ethnic, so sometimes I fall between the cracks. R: What’s a typical day like on set? Especially the guy who plays my husband, Robert Buckley, we are like high school girls. We just run around pulling pranks and cracking each other up. It’s like hanging out with your friends. R: What are your career goals as an actress? MM: Acting is my passion but I am in the middle of writing a script right now, and I really want to direct something. I am so Type A and I love the idea of breathing life into something and the idea of choosing shots and picking what each frame looks like so I hope I’ll be

São Paulo: Brazil at its Best

s a city of high skylines and vibrant urban presence in a country of rainforests and sandy beaches, it is little wonder why São Paulo attracts the tourist’s attention with such regularity that it has virtually become an obligatory destination for those passing through Brazil or South America. As the leader in international aviation, American Airlines magical city twice a day. With them, get there safely and in comfort and style. the Main Cabin on American Airlines on your way to Brazil because you can enjoy complimentary beer and wine – the perfect way to start a journey. São Paulo is the biggest city in South

America with a most interesting layout. The Southern half, and greater part of the city, is mostly covered by forest, farm and water. By complete contrast, the northern half is almost completely urban. The city was born in the downtown area, which is why many of the historical buildings are concentrated in the center. Contemporary architecture takes over around its circumference. paulistanos (São Paulo locals), particularly in the city center, where bankers, government pursuers are responsible for São Paulo’s claim as the champion of Brazil’s economy, while the more creative, art-driven locals buzz around in this Brazilian beehive. São Paulo is a place of juxtaposition, diversity

and carnival atmosphere, making this city São Paulo is a city seeped in history, which Center of São Paulo, otherwise known as the Downtown district. Over four and a the village of São Paulo de Piratininga. Their initial aim was to convert the local inhabitants to Christianity, and so they established the Colégio de São Paulo, which was a mission made to achieve that the early 17th century and was located where the Páteo do Colégio stands today. Anchieta. Resident

Since its founding, São Paulo has had a strong link to Christianity. Some of the oldest churches in the Southern Hemisphere can be found here, including the Catedral da Sé, whose original structure was built in 1616, and the Capela dos Aflitos, which dates back to 1774. There is also the Jardim da Luz, where the elite of São Paulo society traditionally met, and the Palácio das Indústrias, which is one of the more innovative buildings in its design and used to serve as the town hall. All in all, there are plenty of historical sites to visit in the city. São Paulo is considered a paragon of art and original style. Going to the city and not checking out its art scene would be like going to France and not trying cheese. In truth, even for the art resisters, it would be impossible to miss out as its art scene is simply inescapable and is likely to convert even the most stubborn members of the anti-art brigade. Street art is huge in São Paulo. Just by walking around, you can see the works of graffiti like those of artist Alex Hornest, street artist Fefê Talavera, and Zezão, whose trademark graffiti is called pixação. The epicenter of these art waves however is undoubtedly the Museu de Arte de São Paulo. This museum is found on the iconic Paulista Avenue and its standout architecture has made it a landmark and symbol of Brazil. The art collection itself is internationally recognized as one of the finest displays in the world, particularly for its European art. It is home to artwork from around the globe, but it doesn’t neglect its own country’s pieces and boasts an emphatic assemblage of Brazilian art, prints and drawings. You can find practically anything in São Paulo. While the city has a plethora of street shops and retail hotspots, the two most popular ‘shoppings’ -- as the locals call shopping malls -- are the Rua 25 de Março and Cidade Jardim. The Rua 25 de Março belies its name in the sense that it winds through many streets to form the most famous commercial street in the city. A walk down this route takes you through the Arab, Middle Eastern and, to a lesser extent, the Chinese district of the city, so even if you have no interest in making a purchase, a leisurely stroll still offers a view into the cross section of São Paulo. The Cidade Jardim is the polar opposite of the Rua 25 de Março, considered to be a ‘rich only’ shopping mall. It is certainly the most upscale boutique in São Paulo. One of the most impressive buildings in São Paulo, Cidade Jardim is adjacent to the Tietê River and home to high-end shops and spas. You won’t be left wanting when you visit here. Given that São Paulo has one of the most diverse populations in the world, there are no prizes for guessing that this city has restaurants with cuisines from countries far and wide. However, it would be a shame if this wide range distracted from the native cuisine. The signature dish of

São Paulo is the Virado à paulista, which consists of rice, tutu de feijão (a paste of beans and manioc flour; sometimes made of corn flour, in order to be drier than the manioc flour), sautéed collard greens (couve) and pork chops, typically bisteca. It is usually accompanied by pork rinds, bits of sausage, a fried egg and a fried banana. São Paulo is home to D.O.M., which was recently awarded fourth place on the list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. It goes without saying that this is the best place to try authentic Brazilian cuisine. This takes us on to São Paulo’s nightlife,

It is the most widely recognized form of partying, and while its imitators do a decent job of spreading Brazil’s party fever, nothing beats the real thing. Paulistanos party until the early hours. No nation has won more World Cups than Brazil, nor, arguably, has any nation produced more iconic footballers than the Samba Boys. While in America our attention seems to be divided between ice hockey, baseball, basketball and American football, it is soccer that reigns supreme in Brazil. With no less than four soccer teams in São Paulo, including global powerhouses Corinthians and São Paulo, this city, alongside Rio and Buenos Aires, is the best

Nestled between the green mountains and Hawaii is Aulani Disney Resort and Spa. It goes without saying that everything Disney does is big, grand, and anything but subtle. However, at Aulani, Disney has taken a different approach and focused on native Hawaiian culture; as Disney spokesman John McClintock has said ‘We’re a storytelling company and when we came to Hawaii, we didn’t come to tell our own stories. We came to tell the stories that already exist here.’ Aulani is a center for Hawaiian culture. Its biggest aim and true raison d’être is to demonstrate and preserve all that is Hawaiian. This is a theme that runs through the entire complex, starting with their employment policy; all employees must speak the Hawaiian language and have a

strong grasp on and knowledge of Hawaii’s history and traditions. Everything from the wood used to the food served is locally provided and decorated in a quintessential Hawaiian style. Moreover, Aulani boasts the largest collection of contemporary Hawaiian art in the state, the rooms and in the lobbies, which are designed under the inspiration of traditional Hawaiian houses; built using timber and wasn’t enough, Aulani includes interactive pads that give you the A-Z on the Hawaiian story.

Hawaiian waves, offering locally inspired treatments such as ‘lomilomi,’ which is a traditional Hawaiian massage that stimulates healing, a technique that has been honed and perfected over the course of centuries. Aulani offers activities that tie include Hawaiian craft lessons taught by local experts, learning to perform the most iconic of Hawaiian dances, the Hula, at the ‘Ohana Hula, or practise the Ukelele under the guidance of skilled players. waters, white sand, and palm trees. Their standout feature however is without question their 8,200 square feet, multi-million dollar, world-class pool complex. This complex is home to the island’s only snorkelling lagoon, at which you can get a close-up look at the rich and teeming aquatic life. There are numerous slides and adventures at the pool. The most exciting of which is probably the Volcanic Vertical at the Waikolohe pool, although the ‘extreme Waikolohe stream is just as likely to quench your thrill thirst with rapid twists through caverns. For the calmer swimmers, there is a much more serene stream through a lazy river that glides gently along the Hawaiian landscape; there is also Wailana pool, which offers a peaceful retreat from the excitement of the main pools. The water activities are very

interactive, particularly at Waikolohe valley, riding, dancing, and much more. Disney takes more of a laid back approach relative to other Disney resorts, as Mr. McClintock said, Disney is essentially the mouth piece for a largely untold or unknown Mo’Olelo storytelling activity,as guests of all for a night of enchanting tales— complete with puppetry and magical effects—led by ‘Uncle’, a master storyteller and the Resort’s Hawaiian elder. However, Disney itself is still very much present at this resort. The Disney characters can be found around the hotel, at breakfast, by the pool, or just walking around, and they are always willing to take pictures and sign autographs. The rooms have quilts with Micky Mouse’s face quite subtly on it, and statues and carvings can be found by the pool area resembling some of the favorites of the Disney family.

And conveniently, they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is perhaps a great testament to the wealth and value of Hawaiian traditions and culture that Disney decided to choose it as the theme of its latest resort. This is the most imaginative and creative way of championing what is one of the most unmistakable cultures in the Northern Hemisphere, and it is done in a way only Disney could do. Scottsdale By Lisa Loverro

Set in the arid Arizona desert, the W Scottsdale is a hip and trendy resort with a vibe and Los Angeles or New York City. Located in the heartbeat of Scottsdale’s downtown shopping and nightclub district, the hotel provides the perfect mix of modern rooms, excellent dining and year-round activity. Their signature “whatever/whenever” service extends throughout the resort, from room service and hospitality to poolside assistance and spa indulgence, the service here is impeccable.

Year Round Activity In the summer months the outdoor pool, known simply as “Wet,” beomes a playground for the cool and happening scene of Scottsdale (which surprisingly exists). If you’re not interested in socializing with young partygoers, this might not be the place for you. This is, however, the perfect spot for anyone looking to mingle in the pool, drink in hand, with the local crowd. The seasonal, open-air bar, “Sunset Beach” is situated amongst cabanas, daybeds and lounging pods. You can reserve one of their 13 private cabanas, personal services and High Speed Internet Access. In the winter months their “Wet” pool deck is transformed into “Chill,” a 1,600 square foot outdoor skating rink where you can sip on cool cocktails and lounge in a private cabana. It’s the perfect winter activity set under the beautiful starlit skies of Arizona. Their restaurant, Suki Roku, is a supreme dining experience featuring an Asian fusion menu specializing in, what else, but Sushi. Try the Miso Eggplant and Tuna Tartar and then move on to the baked Cod and Grilled Filet Mignon with Miso sauce…all superb! The rooms, all playing along the “W” theme, range from the “Wonderful” room, open and airy, perfect for a couple or business traveler hitting and panoramic views of Camelback Mountain, complete with a spacious living room, intimate dining room, 1

As for activities in the area, a hike up Camelback Mountain will sure to test your aerobic ability and a hot air balloon ride provides panoramic views of the expansive desert. All

A leading hotel and landmark of Japan’s capital city, Imperial Hotel Tokyo has been known to welcome royalty, heads of state, celebrities, and top international businessmen for over a century. The hotel was an unscathed survivor of the great Kanto earthquake in 1923, which is testament to its size and incredible architecture. It is little wonder why Imperial Hotel is unquestionably one of the greatest hotels in East Asia. The Hotel is located just south of the Imperial Palace grounds, next to the previous location of the Palace moat. The modern hotel overlooks the Palace, the 40-acre western-style Hibiya Park, and the Ginza neighborhood. This is a carefully selected location; the hotel was originally built to Western tourists to Japan. This proposal was pushed forward by the aristocracy of Tokyo, and the hotel was owned by the Imperial family for much of its history. This should give you a clear sense of the grandeur we are talking about here, and that’s before I even mention that Princess Sayoko chose Imperial

Being a New Yorker, I’ve experienced it all. From mingling with celebrities, to amazing dining experiences, there is so much our fair city has to offer. But, sometimes, it’s nice to get off the island and explore the world. Recently, I had that opportunity when I visited Vancouver, British Columbia. With perfect weather and an adventurous spirit, I was amped for my trip; I had heard so many wonderful things about the city and the hotel that I was planning on staying at, the OPUS Hotel Vancouver. Situated near the waterfront and in the heart of a trendy section, Yaletown, OPUS Hotel Vancouver is a four-star boutique property with an edgy décor and modern amenities.

Resident November 2012

A stirring design is the hallmark of the hotel; it has personality to spare. And it is no understatement to say that it was the perfect place for this world-weary traveller to stay. From the friendly staff to the large and plush rooms, everything was right. According to a previous guest, staying at OPUS Hotel Vancouver is “like a cool friend with a great sense of style who threw me the keys to his condo for the weekend.” Clearly, this remark hints at the essence of the hotel guest experience. Created to serve a new generation of traveler, one seeking stylish hotels with vitality and is in a league of its own. Using bright and

vibrant colors, sensuous fabrics and natural light – the hotel speaks to those that aren’t looking for the drab and traditional hotel. Beyond the rooms, inside the heart of the very metropolis, lies Yaletown, a hip and happening neighborhood that is the perfect stomping ground for young couples, retired lovers, gays and in-the-know families. Yaletown is our Soho. The neighborhood is an elite 12-block historic district and is home to the area’s most stylish restaurants, boutiques, art galleries, spas and cafes. Like Soho, refurbished warehouses and brick buildings, house interesting and varied fares, and a short walk will lead you to Vancouver’s premier shopping boulevard, Robson Street.

OPUS Hotel Vancouver makes it easy to research and explore the city. First, use their complimentary mobile in-room iPad; they’ve taken the opportunity to load on a Lifestyle Concierge application that can help to pair recommendations based on personality and preferences. Then use their bikes (also free to use) to ride around this ultra-clean and peaceful city. The city has made it easy to explore; use bike and pedestrian paths that run along the waterfront; traverse the extraordinary waterfront seawall, taking in Stanley Park, Sunset Beach and Coal Harbor. The hotel is strategically located. Getting to and from Vancouver International Airport is fast, easy and convenient. The YaletownRoundhouse station of the Canada Line Skytrain is mere steps away from the hotel’s front door and whisks you into the airport itself in just over twenty minutes, or take a

taxi, which is cheaper to use than our cabs. If you like Asian culture, you are in luck! Vancouver has the highest per-capita Asian population in the world, outside of Asia. This lends itself to some wonderful restaurants and cultural activities. I very much enjoyed the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Gardens. With its ornate architecture and gardens are a true sanctuary. And the best part was that it was so easy to get to – I biked my way there! Mention should also be made of their fabulous new Italian restaurant, La Pentola. It is an ode to Northern Italian cooking. Adam Pegg and Lucais Syme of Vancouver’s award-winning La Quercia restaurant deliver artfully crafted cuisine. The chefs present handmade pasta and custom Vancouver hot spot. I was enthralled with rich, creamy pastas, which were as good as any in New York and almost as good as my

grandmother’s. Since I was in Vancouver during their Thanksgiving (beginning of October), we enjoyed a turkey dish. Let it be said that I am no fan of turkey, yet theirs was the most succulent piece of this poultry I’ve ever had. It was certainly worth it! From its beautiful airport, to its shimmering sea, Vancouver is a city that’s so easy to love. And OPUS Hotel Vancouver is a property You’ll love its rooms, people and feel. Stay for a night or a week and you’ll come to enjoy it

The Face of New York By Christopher A. Pape

I’m not a huge proponent of social media. Or, I guess I should say I’m not very savvy at it. But, thank God, this magazine forces me to be in tune with what’s going on. Recently, Chris Wragge of New York’s CBS Channel 2 and WLNY Channel 10/55 fame, connected with us via Twitter (I guess he was a fan of what we had to say!). One thing led to another and I asked him if he’d like to be interviewed; continuing my quest to access only the hottest and best New York has to offer – he readily agreed. What follows is an extensive interview with a passionate man who loves the news, broadcasting and New York. I’m so happy to report that he will be at the party; I hope you like the piece as much as I liked interviewing him!

Resident (R): Where are you from? Chris Wragge (CW): My folks got divorced when I was young so I split time in different towns, but Mahwah, NJ is my hometown and where I’ve been since the 6th grade. T-Bird Country! R: How did growing up in New Jersey affect you? CW: I have a tremendous sense of pride about being from New Jersey. I love the fact that it’s so close to the city. But, the “daily defense” of hailing from a state that is as badgered and bullied as New Jersey has prvoided me with a tough shell. It has come in handy in my line of work. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

contract in 1992 was to get back home and by home that meant to the NYC market. I grew up watching Ch 2 and to be able to work here and be one of the news anchors of record for my family, friends and other people I grew up with provided me with an instant fan base. I’ll take whatever advantage I can get. R: Do you live in the city now? CW: I do. On the Upper West Side, I love it because it’s quiet; I don’t hear sirens and I don’t live that far north (of CBS studios) but, it’s very quiet; it’s probably a little bit of an anomaly that I am not married and I

don’t have kids and everyone else around me does. It’s like walking the streets with a scarlet letter because I don’t push around a stroller. Mornings at Starbucks are great, I just stand there and hold the door for people trying to handle the kids and their coffee. I keep waiting for tips. R: How did you get into the business? CW: I wish I could say there was a blueprint, but there really is no right way to make it. I was a college football player in school and when I was playing my senior year I would be interviewed by the local television station and one of the local stations said, “That guy is pretty articulate for a football player, see if, when he’s done with school, he wants to come on and do some college

football announcing for us.” That was my Manchester, New Hampshire. As soon as I graduated, they hired me on full time and it just took off from there. I was there for two years and then went onto the NBC station at Hartford for a little under two years and Entertainment Tonight for four. I moved to Houston for NBC Sports where I covered the Olympic games, the NBA, ND footbal and the PGA Tour. In 2004, I was approached by CBS to come home to NYC to become the stations new Sports Anchor. R: Tell us what you exactly do now ? CW: I’ve had every job here, except for news

director (laughing). When I was hired I was brought in to replace Warner Wolf. I was the main sports anchor for two years. Eventually, the station approached me and asked if I’d transition to the news. When big news breaks, me that regretted not having a bigger role. When important things happen and I think post 9/11 that probably hit home the most because I was was an attack on the country but, because it was more a less an attack on my home and to not be there and to not be a part of it, combined with being a sports anchor, made the role seem news anchor, the opportunity to be a little more immersed in the bigger stories that cross our desk everyday was appealing. I became the News anchor at 5pm with Kristine Johnson and, shortly after Kristine and I did the 5, we were assigned to the 11pm news. About three months after that, the network approached me to do Saturday mornings Friday night, sleep for about three hours and get up and do that Saturday Early Show for the network. That lasted for about three and half years and then I was approached to do the Early Show full-time. The one regret I have is that it didn’t work out a little bit better but, it happens, new bosses come in and make their decisions and I am totally at peace with what happened. These guys here were kind enough to welcome me back. R: How do you like it here? CW: It’s like a family environment. Lonnie Quinn, Kristine Johnson and Dana Tyler are three of my very best friends. We do holidays together, take in games together and honestly enjoy each other’s company. I couldn’t ask for better colleagues. R: What charities are you involved with? CW: worked with a variety of charities from Asbury Park to East Hampton throughout the years. There are many wonderful organizations that I’ve been involved with including: National

Sometimes you speak to someone that you intrinsically connect with. Perhaps it’s similar personalities or interests or some vague feeling of simpatico. Whatever the unnamed feeling, it’s what I experienced when I interviewed Chris Bauer, of True Blood fame. He was witty, fascinating, engaging and completely straightforward. I appreciated the time I spent with him and hope you like the interview as much as I liked speaking with him. Look out for an article written by him and I can’t wait to meet him again at our big party. Resident (R): Are you a native New Yorker? Chris Bauer (CB): No, but I have lived in New York for 20 years with a serious departure going to LA to shoot True Blood. R: So now you live in LA? CB: Blood I commuted. We have a place in Dumbo and in Sag Harbor. We then we moved out to Sag Harbor; imagine my commute, it’s bad enough to have to commute from LAX to JFK, but you have to throw that extra two hours in to get out to the end of Long Island. It was such an a way to get my kids in school here in LA for when we shot and when I was off, they would come back to New York for school here. Common sense eventually took over and because we are a family that likes to stick together we relocated out to LA. It’s only temporary, for as long as the show goes. But let me tell you my kids will not let a day go by without letting you or anyone else know that New York is home. R: Are they at an age where they can identify which place they like better? CB: They are and it’s such a tribute to New York. My children are transient; children of the circus because my job has taken us all over the place. New York has always been home and it has always been where we return, it has such a strong pull that I can’t blame them. R: Where did you grow up? CB: I was born in LA. The only thing rarer than a native New Yorker is a native Los Angeleno; the only reason people are in LA is because if they kept migrating they would be in the ocean. R: What are the qualities that make up a

New Yorker? CB: What I love about New York is the only obligation I have every day is to of walking out the door I will have an encounter with humanity that makes me feel like my life has a purpose. Whether it’s on the subway or the bus, the connection New York experience. What I have learned from New Yorkers it that we have been sensitized to a real sense of priority. We have to get where we are going and generally the reason we are going there is to make money or get food or have fun. We aren’t the only ones doing a group. My favorite thing to tell people when they say New York is unfriendly is to get on the subway and ask for directions chance to help. R: How often do you come back to New York? CB: I come back every chance I get; I spend every holiday and summer here. And I am really excited because I am coming back to do a play at the Atlantic Theater Company. R: Tell me about the play. CB It’s called What Rhymes with America. R: And what does rhyme with America? CB: So far I haven’t found anything, which makes me think the title is intriguing. R: Tell us about your role and what the show is about. CB: I play a divorced father of a 16 and half-year old girl. The character tries very hard to connect with her, but they are

to affect his world and is unable to do so. It’s just kind of a human take on people’s desire to succeed and have an effect on their world. I can’t wait to get started. R: Let’s turn our focus to True Blood – how is it behind the scenes of the show? CB: True Blood is the 5th show I have worked on and it’s the most pleasant working atmosphere of any job I have ever had. For a show that has been as successful as True Blood has it wouldn’t be uncommon for people to start acting like assholes. And that’s not the case for this show. I have been on the show since the pilot and there are only a handful of us who have been on the show that long, I think we all feel responsible for retaining that gratitude for the fans. Everyone shows up every day and works hard; I am very lucky to have the job. R: Obviously, you don’t have a Southern accent – how did you learn to speak with such a strong Louisianan accent? CB: coach but now it’s been so long that it’s second nature. A year before I did True Blood I stared in A Street Car Named Desire on Broadway and we had a dialect coach. It takes place in New Orleans, so it’s not the same part of Louisiana as where the show is set, but it was close enough so I tinkered around with my Street Car accent and I watched a lot of Youtube videos of law enforcement in Louisiana and I stole

BY ROSANNA SCOTTO FOX 5 “Good Day New York” Co-anchor For the Scotto’s, Thanksgiving means family. It’s one of those great holidays where everyone puts the breaks on their busy lives and comes together for a wonderful time. All of the kids get involved in the meal and there is tradition, in the recipes, which has been passed down. When we make certain dishes, it evokes memories of my childhood growing up in Brooklyn. The holidays were always special because everyone cousins twice removed - was at the table and the eating went on for hours. Now, of course, we have scaled down because we don’t live in a big house; we live in apartments. Our restaurant, Fresco by Scotto, is open for Thanksgiving and we come in between busy times and have a big feast. For an Italian American, the turkey is really on the back burner, it’s there but it’s not the center of the meal. We have to start off with pasta; some kind of lasagna or sometimes my mother will make the wedding soup, the one’s with little meatballs. Before we even start the pasta, there are all different kinds of antipasti on the table, which are usually pepper and mozzarella and tomato and olives. Although I like turkey, I really love my mother’s I’ve included the recipe so that you can make it with your family!

Preparation Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a large sauté pan over medium heat, brown the sausage in 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Remove it to a large bowl. Sauté the onion, beef and veal in the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil until brown and add it to the bowl. Cook the rice according to the package directions until al dente. In a large bowl, stir together the meat, rice, chicken broth, mozzarella and Parmesan. Place the mixture in a casserole dish, and bake for 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.

BY EILEEN FULTON As I look back I can remember I was always in other people’s weddings. My father was a Methodist preacher. Early on, of six I tossed my rose petals, dawned my mother›s white satin slip and stuck a lace shower curtain on my head. I was a bride. I yelled across the street, “Hey Russell, come older man. He was seven. My cat, Pudd’n Head, was our preacher. I grabbed Russell by the hand and gave him a big kiss. He shoved me away and yelled, “What are you doing? his mouth with his shirttail. Soon after, his family moved My second marriage was when I was twenty-three. This time my daddy was the preacher. His brother and father assisted in the ceremony. They were also ministers. As my new husband and I rushed out of the church, I overheard someone remark, “with all those preachers, this knot won’t

My third marriage took place ten years later. We were married standing on a high rock in the Appalachian Mountains overlooking the Swannanoa Valley. Nine years later, our marriage was on the rocks. My fourth marriage was not legal at the time, but it meant a lot to me. We each wore shades of lavender. We stood in the middle of The River Walk in San Antonio, Texas. We exchanged silver pinky rings and vowed to be together always. (I wish I could remember the people who were involved). My last marriage was performed at my Connecticut home on my shaded deck. Both of our families were there. I wore a white, crocheted, see-through dress and a tasteful Channel bow in my hair. It was the season of the gypsy moth worm infestation and those little critters were in the trees high above our heads munching on the leaves. We were peppered with worm poop! It was a bad omen. By the time I opened the last present, our marriage was about over. All those gifts, all those kisses, all those parties and all that gin... I can’t do this anymore! Just save me a piece of

By Eric Trump There’s never a shortage of work at The Trump Organization -between our global Trump Hotel Collection, award-winning Golf Clubs, Residential/Commercial properties, The Celebrity Apprentice, we’re all “on-the-go” would be a true understatement. However, on the rare occasion that we do take the day off, I spend it doing the things I love with those I care about the most. My perfect day off starts with a run in Central Park with my longtime girlfriend, Lara, and our 2-year-old miniature Beagle, Charlie. Charlie is a bundle of energy and loves a good run. However, when he’s done, he’s DONE. I could be in the middle of a full sprint and suddenly he’ll decide he’s had enough, hit the brakes, extend his legs and jerk me back make his point, especially in front of an audience. A true Trump! After our run, I go meet with my trainer Mike at the gym in Trump Tower. Mike puts me through a serious hour of lifting, sprinting and intervals, which, to say the least, is not for the faint of heart. But there’s nothing better than starting every day, even a day off, with an intense workout. Naturally, as a family we love golf. We wouldn’t build some of the best courses in the world, if we didn’t truly love the game ourselves. I especially enjoy getting out on the course with my father. Aside from being an incredible golfer, he has an amazing personality, is beyond competitive and isn’t afraid to bust the chops of his competitors -- teammates and family alike. As I’ve learned, don’t miss that three-foot putt, as you will regret it for weeks to come! It is, however, what makes our family so special; the fact that we can not only work together everyday, but still enjoy each other’s company on weekends. family property in Westchester, NY. I love fresh air, the outdoors and the escape from the concrete jungle we call our home. Charlie, Lara and I love hiking the trails around the property with Charlie’s nose leading the way! When it’s warm enough, Charlie drags me to the pool where he will literally swim all day! Who knew beagles were such great swimmers!? Aside from being beautiful, Lara is an excellent chef, having graduated from the French Culinary Institute in New York. After a long day outdoors, there’s nothing more satisfying than grilling up some steaks, corn-on-the-cob and making homemade guacamole - and I can’t forget Lara’s famous peanut butter brownies, which are fantastic! roasting s’mores with Don, Vanessa and their four kids. When I was here, in New York, two years ago doing La Cage aux Folles, I was drawn to doodling to pass the time; it’s always been a hobby and I tend to draw people on the subway or doing some other activity. When you do eight shows a week you need to have something to distract you; to keep your mind occupied. I had spoken to various people about places where I could sketch. And they all suggested a place in midtown west called The Art Students League of New York. I decided to check it out and there were all these strange and wonderful people, skinny models and exotic artists. gentleman, maybe 80 years old, and 10 or 11 other people were sitting quietly, drawing him. I jumped right in and drew him for three hours; nobody spoke, no teacher came and told me I was doing something wrong or you are doing right; no one came and looked at my drawings. The guy did various posses and it was all very exciting. I went every Friday and each time there would be a different model. Sometimes there would be a beautiful young woman and sometimes there who would stand in various poses. There were also many ethnicities represented. By the end of the year I had hundreds of drawings. At the end of the session with a particular model, you thought you knew the person although none of the artists ever spoke to them. The funny thing is I never spoke to anyone else in the class; I never learned anyone’s name - I just got absolutely lost in drawing the models. At about 6pm, I would be done drawing and I’d would walk down Broadway, get something to eat at a diner and then go and do la Cage. It was the most wonderful escape and I’m so happy that I found my

inspiration in the big city. Born and bred in Albany, I knew the city was the place for me to pursue my passion for television and the news business. After a great career in network TV, I was lucky enough to take the helm of WNET – home to public television stations THIRTEEN, WLIW21 and now NJTV – nearly four years ago. Truly among the marquee public television operations in the country, its reputation for quality, commercial-free, agenda-free programming was well established. WNET produces some of the most popular and most enduring series on public television – NATURE, Great Performances, Great Performances at the Met, American Masters. These programs have loyal fans and are seen by millions across the country. But we’ve also played an important role in the greater New as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary on air. And our archives demonstrate our long-time commitment to New York and New Yorkers. Shows like New York Television Theater, Black Journal and New York Walking Tours, cemented our place in the community, and the community embraced us with unprecedented support. No other city in the country has the depth and breadth of great stories to tell. We are a city with arguably the best arts institutions anywhere, universities with global reputations, politicians with anywhere in the world, and a growing technology industry that is giving California a run for its money. New York in New York Public Media. We launched SundayArts (now NYC-Arts) to showcase the arts offerings around the region each week; it is also the online home of an incredibly rich resource for New York arts lovers looking for information and events at hundreds of cultural institutions around the city. We created MetroFocus – a website that offers continually updated content news, culture and life around New York and is evolving an on-air presence with monthly specials. By ErniE AnAstos FOX 5 Anchor As someone who has been an experienced anchor in New York for so many years, I hear from people, “Everything just seems so bad, can you find something positive to tell us about, Ernie?” My new program, Positively Ernie, is designed to focus on the good things that are happening in our world. There are two segments, one is called positive impact, and it has to do with people who are doing good things either in charity or in an organization and finding a way to reach out to people. I also do something on positive lifestyle; I think everyone is concerned with how we live today. It’s about how we can live better physically, emotionally and spiritually. We feature Dr. Oz, who is a medical guru and he is on every show. He talks about goals in health and medicine. It’s about learning, where people can say “I like that,” and use it to empower their lives and also share it with others. We also do something about positive influence; it’s the power of the media plus education and it gives people the opportunity to learn. I am trying to launch a campaign for more positive news on the air, I am calling on many of my colleagues in the industry who know how difficult it is to cover news because it’s an explosive world and we have so many elements we didn’t have before like cable, and now we have an excess of information that comes to us and we have to wave through all of this information and choose what to put on the air.

Positively Ernie WNYW/Fox 5 Four Saturdays in December (12/01/12, 12/08/12, 12/15/12 & 12/22/12) 5:30PM-6:00PM

I think that what we need to do is all work together so we can have more positive stories on the news so we can all learn and grow from that. I watched a story on the news recently, which says that viewership on the networks in many homes, is dropping and many people who I talk to on the street tell me that they get frightened when they put the news on. We need the balance; we have to report the stories that are going on but, at the same time, we can be responsible, particularly to our young viewers and put more stories on the air that are positive and that is one of the reasons I am doing the show. The world is a lot better

FOX 5 Reporter I’ve always loved Brooklyn, even though I grew up in Virginia. During the summers, my whole family would come up to visit relatives in Red Hook (Thomas and Rachel McNair - my aunt and uncle; they were very big in the community). Often, we would drive around the borough and I would stick my head out and listen to all of the sounds; it was so different than the Norfolk area. While staying in Brooklyn, I remember hearing Diana Ross and Stevie Wonder being played at 1am. We were supposed to be asleep, but it was such energy; I loved it. Every day, we’d go to the corner to buy a hot dog. All of these things that were not so common in our Commonwealth, are things that I remember now. It’s what I loved about New York. As you know, Red Hook was a tough place when I was growing up in the 70’s; we are talking about a time when Red Hook was not Sunnybrook Farms, it was a place where there was crime. We could not go too far from the apartment building and my grandma was always very protective of us, but it’s evolved and the city has maintained its faith in Red Hook. Tourists and in-the-know New Yorkers go there now. There has been a resurgence and my family is still there and they are proud to be community activists. These family members gave me a connection to New York; even though I had a Southern accent, I could still talk that I could draw on. My uncle and my aunts were very helpful, they wanted me in Brooklyn, they are still mad at me for not living in Ft. Greene or Park Slope, but I wanted to be in the city. I wanted to be in Manhattan and my uncles gave in. Yet, they are still there if I need them and for that I am very thankful. If it weren’t for those summers in Brooklyn as a child, I wouldn’t have been able to adjust to New York as well as I have. I was in Red Hook last summer to do a story on Carmelo Anthony joining the Knicks (he’s also from Red Hook) and while I was there, ran into some of the guys from the apartments, and when they figured out I was a nephew of the McNair family now working for Fox 5 one of them started taking me around to others in the complex saying “He’s one of us.” It was those summer visits to Brooklyn as a child that helped ease my transition to New York when I started

My favorite thing about New York is the amazing dining scene. Being a self-described foodie, I have to say restaurants are my favorite things shows. Anthony Bourdain is one of my favorites, I love the idea of him traveling; I love him discovering new and different cultural foods and I love that he goes to small villages - not just the big towns where grandmother will cook for him; I love, love, love that. I actually look for that when I travel. So it is no surprise that in New York, I have a long list of places I want to go to that friends have

something new to discover, especially in the restaurant world. So to all the chefs out there - I am your friend - let me come eat! really something that is different from any sushi that I have ever had; I have never experienced anything like it, the sushi almost melts in your mouth. These amazing tiny cuts of deliciousness; I am forever course are: Sushi of Gari, Sasabune, 15 East and Masa are all on my list. On the other hand, everyone has been telling me about this place

things of that nature.

eaten there a couple of times. The view is tremendous if you are out on the patio, and they have this chicken that is to die for! Another one of my favorites in the city, because I love jerk chicken and Jamaican about it I doubt you would pay attention as you walk by. I love to get the jerk chicken plate. not a scene and the cocktails there are phenomenal; the mixologists there are extremely talented. As the weather starts getting colder, the best way to socialize is at a restaurant. I hope you guys try some of these places and I hope that I

BY CHRIS BAUER I’ve always resented the jerks who try to merge onto the Brooklyn Bridge entrance heading downtown on the FDR. Like the good Catholic boy that I am, I’ve made it a point to get into the far right lane in plenty of time so that I won’t slow up traffic; anticipating the exit that will take me to my Brooklyn home just across the river. Nearly every time, I sit still in my car or cab for at least a few minutes while the last minute cheaters clog up the line trying to squeeze into the exit lane in time to get on the bridge. Sure, I allow for the occasional out of towner, and day dreamer who may have spaced out and missed their chance to merge earlier, but the majority of the stoppage comes from the dark side of NYC mentality, which is “the rules don’t apply to me.” But like everything else in New York, there’s an upside to every pain in the ass; like when you get stuck on the subway and leave with a girl’s phone number. I was in that line of cars waiting to get on the bridge once, at a dead stand still, when two livery drivers got into it during the merge onto the bridge. In that way that things can escalate in a big city, their repressed rage exploded and one of the drivers got into his car and angrily ran over the feet of the other driver, and took off across the bridge. Uninjured, but angry like a bull, the other driver dove in his car and took off in chase. Idling in traffic behind them, I saw the whole thing. I looked at the stunned driver in the old Honda next to me and we met eyes. “Did you see that, man?” “Yeah,” I said. He looked at me and said, “Hey, are you that actor?” And in a flurry of vanity that would make any actor proud, I said “Yes!” Not even considering that he could mean anyone. He grinned and let out one of those deep Brooklyn laughs; “Only in New York man!” And as is the case whenever anyone says that, he

The Legend of Sanibel, Florida The first European landed on our shores about 500 years ago. Columbus whet Spain’s appetite for exploration. He dreamed of reaching Asia by sailing west, but he needed funding. Queen Isabella denied him three times; finally she declared “I will assume the undertaking for my own crown of Castile, and am ready to pawn my jewels to defray the expenses of it, if the funds in the treasury should be found inadequate.” In 1492 Columbus’ ships landed in the Bahamas and he claimed them for Spain. His expedition continued on to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Columbus returned to the Spanish court with natives and gold, exaggerating the significance of all he had found. Historians believe he was accompanied by Juan Ponce de León on his second expedition. When rumors of gold surfaced, Juan was given permission to find it. When he heard tales of a fountain of youth, he looked for that too. Around the time of Easter celebrations, he landed in a beautiful place he named Pascua Florida – Spanish for feast or festival of flowers. He continued exploring Florida’s coast and named Sanibel “SanYbel” after Saint Isabella of Portugal – the patron saint of brides.”

Wall Street &

Presidential Election

By Charlie Gasparino Four years ago, I was dining with two Wall Street CEOs at Sistina, a high-end restaurant on the upper east side of Manhattan, and the subject of then-candidate Obama came up. crisis had yet to enter DEFCON severity. Lehman was still alive and candidate Obama was still neck and neck with his Republican challenger John McCain. I was lamenting how this guy Obama could actually win, and just how bad it would be for the economy and the country if a candidate who thinks it’s a swell idea to raise taxes even during a recession becomes president. “Baloney,” snapped one of my dinner guests, “Obama is a moderate.” This CEO said he had met Obama, contributed to his campaign, and said there’s nothing radical about wanting to do the things he wants to do such as reforming health care. “And what’s wrong with paying some more taxes?” shot the other guy, whose regular salary was many multiples higher than the $250,000-a-year threshold where those Obama tax increases kick in at. “And by the way, have you ever seen him give a speech?” What a difference four years of President Obama makes for those two guys, and many others from Wall Street who with a wicked case of buyer’s remorse. These days it’s almost as if you can’t go to any high-end eatery types about President Obama and his policies. Republican nominee Mitt Romney is raking in the vast majority of the swooned over Obamamania now spit when they hear his name. Is Wall Street going becoming a bastion Tea Party politics? Not political views. If I had to guess, pre-Obama the street would be divided pretty evenly between Republicans and Democrats. But the “fat cats” have plenty of reasons to more fully embrace the Republicans in this presidential election aside from President Obama’s name calling. The president has endorsed the Occupy Wall Street movement, which takes banker bashing to a whole and high end jobs in New York as banks are forced to announce layoffs to pay for increased regulatory costs. And one other thing: Now that they’ve gotten to know president Obama, many people on Wall Street say they just don’t like him. “He’s kind of arrogant,” is the way another bank CEO who endorsed Obama four years ago recently described the

By Sharon Dastur For one night every year, the biggest stars perform their biggest hits at New York’s concert event of the year – Z100’s Jingle Ball. Even before they were famous, big superstars like Britney Spears and Katy Perry came to the show as music fans, and then headlined shows a few years later. At last year’s show, Lady Gaga took a quick break from her performance to share ever attended was Z100’s Jingle Ball, and that at the show, she had turned to her mother and said “…one day I will be on THAT stage!” She then had the spotlight put on a girl sitting in the 10th row, and said “…that was the seat I was sitting in back then, and now I’ve made my dreams come true performing on this stage at Z100’s Jingle Ball. Make sure you always dream big because your dreams can come true too!” Ever year, the show sells out within minutes, and this year is no different and sold-out faster than any previous year. The line-up includes - One Direction, Ne-Yo, Ed Sheeran, B.o.B, Jason Mraz, Olly Murs, fun., The Wanted, Cher Lloyd, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and many special guests. They will all be taking the stage at the legendary Madison Square Garden on December 7th…a little note… 3 of these artists recently sold-out their own concerts at Madison Square Garden, and 3 have sold-out their own shows at Radio City Music Hall. There’s someone on the bill for every music fan! It’s the hottest ticket in town, and the only way to get the sold-out tickets is to win them on Z100 or Z100.com. rowing up, New York was always this magical place that you got snippets of in magazines and on TV. There are a million moments when I truly can’t believe I live here now and they happen at the oddest times and that’s always very surreal to me. I can remember visiting here with my parents and looking around and I can remember the air of danger; it was a different time then; all these things a small town in Massachusetts. Being a music fan, I was constantly surrounded by all of these things you would read about - like the Dakota and walking through Central Park where John Lennon used to stroll. It is very powerful to me, walking through Strawberry Fields; that’s something that never gets tiring. If Mick Jagger and Keith Richards lived here, it’s good enough for me. Walking by Studio 54 there is just so much history. It’s amazing how things change - CBGB is now a John Varvatos store. Everything that has sort of culturally happened has some kind of connection to here and you can go check it out. I love researching some building or location and going to see what it looks like; I love checking out different historical landmarks. There is a bar down on St. Marks called V bar and they have a long and storied past. Thirty years ago, the Rolling Stones shot their Waiting for a Friend video there. I was so happy that I checked that out; I loved it. All of these things remind me that I’m living in the center of the universe; that’s what is great about it. There is a realization by the people who live here that they are lucky to live here. I have never met anyone who lives in here that says, “Oh it’s kind of okay - I kind of want to move though.” being here, everyone has such pride living here. Everyone is bound by being able to live someplace

When it comes to exercising, I think everyone has to find out what works. You have to think about your body type and what your schedule is like. I found what works for me; I go through the same routine all of the time. It’s not only for my body but also for my mind. It’s a time when I can clear my mind and think about other things - like work or what’s going on during my daily grind. I follow the same workout pattern - three days on, one day off. And I usually train one body part on one day and a different one on the other. Recently, in the last three months, I realized that diet is about 70 to 80 percent of how you look and how you feel. I used to train for hours and do a lot less cardio and have a stricter diet. Now, I write down everything I eat for lunch, dinner and everything in between. I found that’s what keeps me accountable for everything I eat. I don’t want to, at the end of the day, look and say “I didn’t really need three Rice Krispy Treats.” For some reason, when you put it on paper it’s like a diary, you can’t really lie to yourself. The older I have gotten, I’ve learned how dieting plays into this. I don’t go overboard on protein but I keep carbs on the lower side. And that is what works for me. I don’t think there is anything wrong with going to dinner having a cheat night just as long as you stay on track. Like everyone I have cheat food; I love Chicken Parmesan and ice cream but, I eat those things and still maintain a healthy weight. I think New York is a great place to stay in shape; you can walk to lots of places and there are lots of places to work out. People and businesses provide lots of positive encouragement. However, there are a lot of great places to eat out at too – so be careful! The most important is finding what works for you and sticking

QUESTION: I adore Italian frescoes like Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and would love to have them in my home can you recommend artists who work in the Italian Renaissance style? Is this very expensive to do this? LD by the park Dear LD, In original Italian frescoes like the work of Michelangelo the artist was working on newly installed (Fresco means fresh) lime based plasters. Buon (original) fresco have lasted hundreds and in some cases thousands of years. There are many examples of ancient frescoes still vibrant and beautiful after more than three thousands years like those found in the ancient Greek temples of Knossos. Today’s artists usually emulate the style of Italian Buon fresco without using their materials and techniques. It took Michelangelo more than four years to complete the Sistine Chapel, dependent on the artist, the cost, time and quality can vary greatly. Our company represents several artists who produce Italian fresco style work at varying prices to go over the pricing options of your particular needs. If cost is an issue (based on your question I believe it is) there is a state installers to do Italian fresco style work at a fraction of the price of our regular artists installations. The picture accompanying this story is done with Tattoo wall it is a product that was developed and produced allows us to put up a copy of the Sistine Chapel in days not years and it allows us to do fresco style work on plaster, cement, glass, ceramic tile, brick, fabric, and even stucco plastered walls. Amazingly in addition to the angelic fresco that appears on the plaster patterns on its seat were all created by tattoo wall for us in Italy and were installed in Florida. It is extremely adaptive we use it to install original artwork without limitation, from copying the works of Michelangelo’s, to simple Disney like artistry for children, or something abstract like the the permission (and payment to) of the artist and apply those images to For more information regarding this product or to ask a question regarding any coating feel free to contact me at: Stewart Ratzker, PresidentÊÊUÊAdvance Coating Group {xäÊÇÌ Ê Ûi ÕiÊUÊ-Õ ÌiÊÎäÇÊUÊ iÜÊ9 À ]Ê 9Ê£ä£ÓÎ > \Êinfo@advancecg.comÊUÊ* i\ 212.279.6488

LIVING WITH AN OPEN HEART THIS HOLIDAY SEASON BY JANE SEYMOUR The holiday season is all about the cherished moments we celebrate together. It’s about the love we share with friends and family and the strength we take from these special people. It’s about giving thanks and being joyful for what we have. This year, I encourage everyone to not only take time to show appreciation for their blessings, but to look at how they can make a true difference in the world. While this seems like a monumental task, it really is as simple as living with an Open Heart. My Open Heart philosophy was born from my artwork. Every time I painted a heart it was open, and when there were two or more, they were connected. I came to realize that this reflected my mother’s advice that love should have no boundaries and should flow unconditionally. Life is full of challenges, but when your heart is open it can never stay broken and love will always find its way in. One of the most intimate and personal ways we can embody this spirit is by embracing the families in our lives. When I say families I don’t just mean the traditional family unit, but also the extended families that we create from the people we open our hearts to as we journey through life. Family is reflected in the moments we have in life when we are touched by another— when we open our hearts and souls and trust one another with our deepest feelings. These people become our Open Hearts Family.

A Night to Celebrate the Open Heart Spirit th

Open Heart philosophy at the Christmas Rose concert at Carnegie Hall. At this event the Open Hearts Foundation, which provides funds to charitable organizations in the areas of health, education, arts and sports, will be recognizing these individuals as part of an evening that will feature a performance from internationally renowned composer Tim Janis and a cast of 400 dancers and musicians. It promises to be an entertaining and uplifting experience for all.

When we open our hearts, our family grows; so do we . . . and so can the world. This holiday season, look for ways to expand your own Open Hearts Family and recognize the people in your life with whom you share a special bond. Celebrating these relationships fills our hearts with love and truly makes the

BY MELISSA FRANCIS By the time I left for college, I had already lived a whole lifetime, and exhausted a full career. I had grown up in front of the camera, selling cheeseburgers for McDonald’s and Barbie’s for Mattel. I was orphaned in a tragic wagon accident and then adopted by Michael Landon on Little House on Prairie, and then orphaned again and not adopted on another NBC show that lasted only one season. I was eighteen, and I was spent. I packed my bags for Harvard and threw any leftover scripts in the recycling bin. When I graduated, I moved around small markets as a news reporter and anchor, but I was never truly home until I settled in New York - the only city where you can become a born somewhere or you’re not. You can’t control that. But that’s what makes New York unique. It can be in your bones at birth and you don’t even know it.

“Move your skinny ass out of my way!” a woman a full head taller shopping bags. I took a stagger step back to regain my balance. She was in the right of course - I hadn’t allowed enough room for her to exit before I tried to cram myself in the already overstuffed train car. But I was hardly offended. First of all, in my universe, “skinny” is a compliment. Plus she had spoken her mind and moved on. I’m sure I was forgotten before she even hit the street. This is a town where you air your grievances, even use your shopping bags to make your point, and keep going on your way. No hard feelings. How refreshing. I can embrace that kind of honesty. And like a lot of New Yorkers, I came to the city weighed down by Diary of Stage Mother’s Daughter, the story of the family I was born into, which came to a shocking, explosive end. The kind of end that would make anyone move a few thousand miles away and start over. Turns out, New York is the ideal place to do that. A painful history just makes you that much tougher and grittier – maybe even lends a little street cred. Here, I can build myself into whatever I want to be. Like so many of my neighbors, being clever, ambitious, determined, and strong carries you a long way. I’ve reinvented myself. I’m a FOX Business Network anchor, an author, a wife and a mother. And, who knows, I may have to reinvent myself again someday. But I love my career, I love my family, and I thank New York City for being the backdrop that

NEW YORK MILITARY ACADEMY CO-ED t COLLEGE PREP t 7TH - 12TH GRADE BOARDING & DAY SCHOOL Established in 1889, the 120 acre campus is conveniently located just 60 miles north of New York City. We are dedicated to developing young leaders who have that competitive hunger and desire for success and fulfillment in college and in life, and who desire to be successful leaders in the future. Utilizing the military model for leadership and development, and a rigorous curriculum grounded by a demand for competence in the classical disciplines, our graduates are thoughtfully prepared to seek out extraordinary lives of accountability and service. NYMA’s competitive academics and athletic programs are enhanced by a structured boarding environment that includes daily tutorials, a nightly, mentored study hall, a robust ESL program and a 12:1 student/teacher ratio in the classroom. Cadets enjoy opportunities to not only learn accountability but to practice peer leadership and to accept important responsibility. One of the things that set NYMA apart from other college prep schools is what we call our “real-life leadership lab”. Putting our

cadets in positions of increased accountability and responsibility in the Cadet Corps, while at the same time requiring them to maintain a high level of academic and athletic participation, requires them to constantly improve their organization, planning, time management and multi-tasking skills. We believe development in these critical areas gives our graduates a distinct advantage over others as they transition into some of the more prestigious colleges and universities in America. Please take the time to browse the website and become familiar with what sets New York Military Academy apart from the other college prep schools. Then schedule a visit with our admissions office and come see for yourself why our cadets are SET APART FOR EXCELLENCE by being inspired, engaged and ready for the future.

We’ll See? By Eileen Wacker

I can’t believe it. My kids are talking about their holiday wish list already. My younger children are still trapped in two worlds their kid world with toys like nerf guns grown-up world that wants phones and all the accompanying accessories. They still believe in a list. My ten year-old son includes internet links/addresses on his list so I am sure to get the requested items right. Our older two fourteen year-olds are “all in” for electronics – and, they are each asking for an iPhone5. November is a mom-crushing month. We have the fall schedule with sports and activities in high gear, plus the pressure of holiday shopping, planning and events. I’m not ready for this yet; I’m not even close! My kids are already asking whom we are going to visit, whom they can bring to what and if they can have and go to parties. I just reply, “We’ll see. Let’s get through Halloween I call a family meeting. “Okay everyone listen up. I need to know if anyone is going out trick-or-treating? And does anyone need a costume?”

My oldest daughter says, “I don’t know what everyone is doing yet.” I say, “Who decides what everyone will do? Don’t you just decide if you want to go?” She answers, “MOM, really, if I don’t know if people are dressing up, I can’t. And I have to wait until the other kids decide if there will be a party or maybe we’ll go to the mall.” Her perplexing reasoning is stated as though it is perfectly obvious. I am, of course, wondering who are these “deciders’. Is it some kind of position and how do you earn it? Is ‘proposer’ another position? My next son says, “Halloween is lame and dressing up is for losers. Can I go back to my room?” Last year, he was in a contest with his brother to see who could get the most “good candy”. Good candy, I learned, is something like a Reese’s peanut butter cup while a lollipop is considered bad. I guess a lot changes in a year when you are thirteen. My sweet nine-year-old says, “I want to go as a spotted puppy. Can you be my master and I’ll go on a leash?” I am envisioning children’s family services not seeing this as funny, but just say, “we’ll see.” She says, “Why do you always say, we’ll see?” I think

about it and decide not to tell her the truth. I say “we’ll see” when I don’t have a good reason to say “no” but want to, so I say “we’ll see” until I think up a good reason to say no. Our oldest daughter comes in and corners me. She has the iPhone3 – not even a 3G if you can imagine! She claims, “I am the only student in my whole grade with a broken-down 3 and now with Instagram, it is more embarrassing than ever! My photos are a total nightmare. Can I please get an iPhone5 for Christmas?” Before I ask how she can handle this humiliation every day or answer whether she can ask for an iPhone5, her ‘embarrassing phone’ beeps and she runs into a corner, crouches down and starts texting with her two thumbs and a unreadable expression. So after a family meeting with nearly no productive input, I come to terms with the fact I am going to have to face the holidays as usual. I am going to gear up for a marathon of sports, holiday parties and events, gift decisions and family commitments and rest after the New Year. I’ll be hanging out with a puppy off a leash on Halloween night and

By Narbeh Minassian Christmas and New York go hand in hand; the most wonderful time of the year at the most wonderful city in the world. Forgive my snobbery, but to be anywhere else but in a Christmas enveloped NYC is almost not fair, and as an only recently adopted New Yorker, I can vouch for this being a widely held view in the rest of the world. One of the reasons for this fame is the iconic Broadway scene, and, this Christmas, it seems as though ‘A Christmas Story, The Musical’ is set to be the main attraction for the Thespian’s Christmas.

rebirth to the film original of 1983.

A Christmas Story, The Musical first played in a tour in 2011 and it was its strong showing in a critically acclaimed final stretch of its tour in Chicago that got the theater lovers purring, putting John Rando’s production on the fast-track to Broadway’s most popular time of year. With a richly experienced and talented cast that includes Dan Lauria (from Sullivan and Son and The Wonder Years), John Bolton (Spamalot, Contact, Titanic), and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’s Erin Dilly, this is a play that gives a much celebrated

We sat down with John Bolton, one of the stars of the show. He plays Ralphie’s dad and is not only excited to be involved, but thinks the movie makes for a perfect adaptation, “The film lends itself so well to become a musical because there are so many fantasy sequences in it that sing all by themselves.” Set in 1940’s Indiana, this is a play that takes you back to a simpler time. Bolton agrees, “The music is a classic America musical sound with smart lyrics and respect to the source material.”

The story is about a young, fairly nerdy boy named Ralphie, who wants what pretty much any young boy wants for Christmas- a BB Gun- and, just as pretty much any boy would, he sets out determined to land the coveted shooter. The play takes you through this boy’s heart-warming quest with some less than heart-warming obstacles such as pink bunny pajamas (you’ll see), a cranky department Santa (typical), and a ‘tripledog-dare’ to lick a freezing flagpole.

Like most great Christmas productions, this is a celebration of family and a moving reminder of what is really important and where the true value lies in this ever consumer inducing society. It’s energy has instilled itself into the cast, “I feel like the luckiest man in show business to be able to play this iconic role,” Bolton stated. The Detroit Free Press Raved that ‘the cast practically triple-dog-dares you not to enjoy yourself ’, and it is this nature of widespread acclaim that has given John Rando’s team a deserved spot at the Mecca of the Theatre world. Opening night is Monday, November 19, so be sure to book tickets for what promises to

The Power of the

CIRCUS BY CHRISTOPHER A. PAPE

There are few things in life as exhilarating and engaging as attending the circus. And there are few circuses, if any, as quintessentially New York as the Big Apple Circus. Recently, I had the double pleasure of going to a performance and interviewing their two clowns, the Acrobuffos. was in a constant state of wonderment. From the aforementioned Acrobuffos to Zhang Fan (on his slack wire routine), every child and adult was awed and amazed by the talent, skill and courage from the entire cast. its originality and by the ringmaster, John Kennedy Kane. Mr. Kane, a throwback to a bygone era of circus lore, was charming, informative and engrossing. I could tell from the faces of the children and adults that they were totally into it when he was present. Mention should be made of Jenny Vidbel, a third-generation circus performer and animal trainer. Her ability to train and guide horses, ponies and dogs was unique and breathtaking. It was her work with the horses that was most impressive. The danger of an accident among the horses and/or the spectators was high – but she succeeded with aplomb. On another note, it was a blast to speak with Seth Bloom and Christina Gelsone of Acrobuffos. They sat down with me to discuss their role and Big Apple Circus, as a whole. Both were knowledgeable about the history of the circus and the important and powerful role that Big Apple plays. Christina said, “We live in New York, we are New Yorkers; as a clown I have always wanted to work here. And it is so nice to come home; it’s like Christmas for clowns.” Their concept, how clowns were like at the turn of the nineteenth Legendarium, it is Big Apple’s ode to the circus as it was, “Our characters are based on circus clowns from the 1890’s and from a character at the Moulin Rouge,” stated Sean. amusement for either yourself or a youngster, this is the perfect venue. With stunts that will amaze and talent that will inspire, Big Apple circus has thought of everything. If you don’t take my word for it, I’ll put you in touch with some kids I know that

Oasis Day Spa: Your New Home BY CHRISTOPHER A. PAPE

It seems we are not the only ones with cause for celebration this month as Oasis Day Spa turns ten years old. We know full well just how much of an achievement this is and sincere congratulations are in order for the conclusion of the latest chapter in what is perhaps one of the great success stories in the beauty industry. Oasis Day Spa began with an idea from a selfproclaimed ‘average Joe’ from Brooklyn, who, after much vetting and consideration, made his idea manifest in a loft on Union Square. From this point, their rise has been nothing short of meteoric; the following year they were named ‘Best New Day Spa’ by New York Magazine and shortly afterwards they expanded, opening a new spa in an abandoned Metro station on Park and 35th.

industry was lacking a personal touch and didn’t value the customer as it should. In their own words, they wanted ‘a real mom and pop This is perhaps the signature feature of their spa; instead of being treated like reference number or just another client, you are made to feel the focus of their welcoming hospitality and attention, which makes perfect sense given that the entire concept of the spa is to maximise the comfort of the customer.

Such was the success of these two spas that they were offered the opportunity to open another spa in the Jet Blue terminal at JFK and, in 2008, they moved into Westchester in the press in New York Magazine, they have received notable praise from Allure, Spa Magazine, Day Spa Magazine, and Timeout New York, and, I guess, our name should be added to this list of heavyweights throwing superlatives at this wonderful pillar of the spa and beauty industry in New York. The secret to its success can be found in the approach taken by owners Bruce and Marti Schoenberg. They felt that the beauty

They offer all the traditional spa services and more. Their treatment list is extensive and cutting edge and offers services such as relaxing massages, rejuvenating body scrubs and wraps (using a multi-head European Vichy shower), skin perfecting facials and peels, and even a full-service hair and nail salon. Their seasonal treatments include the Blueberry Blast Hydrating Facials, and Bodylicious Slimming Escapes.

Oasis Day Spa is excited to introduce Oasis Day Spa’s newest complement, the Maximus Clark Salon, brainchild of award-winning celebrity stylist, Cody Hepworth. Maximus Clark Salon’s goal is to tailor the individual style, natural features and personality of each and every client, allowing them to radiate The Maximus Clark Salon is at the beck and call of every non-stop New Yorker specializing in haircuts, styling and professional blow outs for men, women and teens. Throughout his extensive career, Hepworth has also developed a highlight process unlike any other salon in the city, utilizing biodegradable cloth applicators normally used to clean print processors, that help him to apply color closer to the scalp, have your hair processed without heat and in less processing time than any other treatment. This Day Spa makes rightful claims to being an oasis. Amid the buzzing and rush of the ‘New York Minute’, the Oasis Day Spa is a welcome haven of relaxation. For the best in

Michael Albert, well-known New York artist, is proud to produce works of art that are completely orginial and are loved by children and adults alike. For our party, he created a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. I sat down with him out more about his works. We are big fans and hope that you will be too! Resident (R): What made you get into art? Michael Albert (MA): I started going to museums and I thought art is important and special and that’s why its treated the way it is; kept in museums and collected by people all over the world. And I wanted to do something special in my life; it took me into a new world that I could secretly create masterpieces. R: Tell us how you got into the work you are doing now? MA: As I got out of school I continued to draw and I started making collages. I was aware of the fact that if I didn’t make art I would become a businessman and less of an artist. Eventually I started making collages because there is so much waste that if you don’t know what to do with it it could make you crazy. So I started using stickers and stuff from junk mail and photos that weren’t so great and evolved from there. Using things that were perfectly good materials, but I had no use for them. Eventually I got into this practice of cutting and pasting and got away from drawing. I came across an empty Frosted Flakes box and I don’t even eat them, but I couldn’t bring myself to throw it and in a free moment I cut it up and rearranged the pieces. It was sort of like Warhol and the Campbell’s

Soup Can, but rather than it being a silkscreen it’s a totally hand done process and what I realized in doing my work is that I’m saving this stuff from R: Are you in any museums or galleries? MA: I don’t have a gallery I work with, but I have had many shows. I have run my traveling “Cereal Box Collage Workshop” program in many museums including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art and libraries, schools & children’s museums all over the Eastern coast & Midwestern USA and in Europe. It’s interesting my book is in a lot of museums like the MOMA, but I have not gotten any of my originals in those types of venues yet. I think the people decide what art is

important, then the galleries & curators come on board—as it happened with Keith Haring My version of the Last Supper is called the Last Breakfast and it has my Sir Real character surrounded by the twelve apostles and I put messages in like do the right thing, live each day as if it were your last and love thy neighbor. When I started using Pop imagery from famous consumer brands coupled with ideas like these, I think it made my art more meaningful. Like taking the Gettysburg Address and spelling it all out letter by letter, word by word,. If someone can see the amount of work that went into that collage and therefore appreciate the famous Lincoln speech more, that gives my work and life

In mid-October, Edi Frauneder and Wolfgang Ban –the head chefs at Seasonal restaurant, New York- went live on NBC’s Today Show to make Wiener Schnitzel, Spaetzle and Apfelstrudel for 5 Million viewers. To see and taste why their food is so renowned, you need not be a presenter on said program, merely a customer at Seäsonal Restaurant & Weinbar. Over the years together, Wolfgang Ban and Eduard Frauneder have perfected their own modern take on Austrian cuisine - one that combines traditional techniques, contemporary innovations, and updates to some of their favorite childhood dishes. The pair has teamed up with the caterers behind the prestigious private catering group, Elderberry Catering, and a small group of investors, to open Seäsonal Restaurant & Weinbar, which marks is to provide elegant home-cooking in a sleek but welcoming setting. The design is by Ron Gushue of ERG Architects in Greenwich, Connecticut. He worked to create an intimate setting that would enhance the sophistication of the food. The furniture is largely brown, which offers a subtle contrast to the celestial ceiling, punctuated by tiny threads of light shaped into branches, creates a glowing canopy to the dining room. They leave the walls a bright white and this feature acts as a canvas for the works of many German and Austrian artists, which change as the menu changes. The menu itself is of course of Austrian theme, and you can expect only the freshest ingredients in all dishes. You may have already sussed out that the menu is ever changing in accordance with the seasons (hence, the name), which means it is the perfect time of the year to go at any time of the year. Their ‘tastes of Austria’ menu is a forte of the restaurant, and their weiner schnitzel (Veal Cutlet, Potato, Cucumber, and Lingonberry) is a particular delight. It is not unheard of to have one world-class chef in a restaurant in New York City; in fact, I’d say it is commonplace relative to the rest of the world. However, even with this wealth of talent, having two world class chefs in the same restaurant is something of a rarity and this alone is reason enough to pay a visit. They just

By Narbeh Minassian When Michael Lomonaco opened Porter House in New York, his vision was clear; he wanted to take the values of the traditional steakhouse and bring it together with a premium seafood program. As part of the prestigious Restaurant Collection in Time Warner Center, it is fair to say that Lomonaco has seen this vision become a reality. Anyone with a vested interest in American cuisine, or indeed the culinary world as a whole, may be aware that Lomonaco’s name has become synonymous American tradition ever since it was adopted from the French after the 18th century, and Lomonaco has acknowledged this and made Porter House one of the leading steakhouses in New York City. Porter House prides itself on its service. The smartly dressed waiters are there in numbers and you will never be far from or have to wait for good service. Hospitality is not only demanded constantly, but also to be of the highest quality.

of the cooking team’s philosophy to bring the best of traditional steak but with a contemporary twist. Diners can expect delicious USDA aged prime beef sourced from the highest quality ranches in Southern California. Porter House New York’s Prime Rib Eye has been consistently distinguished by New York Magazine for being the seafood to choose from: Maine Lobster, wild Alaskan salmon, local tuna, and striped bass. Wayne Harley Brachman is renowned for his desserts, which you may know if you have ever followed Food Network on television. If you have never watched Food Network or caught Brachman on it, it is nothing to worry about as you will understand exactly why he is famed when you reach the tail end of your stay at Porter House. In a city brimming with some of the best steakhouses in the country -many which the best is. All we can tell you, without reservation and without any

he two restaurants below have nothing in common, except, of course, that they are both delicious. For

the outskirts of the West Village and Galli a new Italian restaurant in Soho are serving up some delicious food. Both Narbeh and I urge you to try them!

We all have a favourite Italian restaurant, but before you remind yourself of your choice, allow us to throw Galli restaurant in the mix. Found in Soho, this restaurant is surprisingly spacious and has that special touch of class to it that only the Italians can bring. Their food is described as ‘comfort food’, but this should not be misinterpreted for fatty food that makes you feel anything but comfortable at the end, it is pure and simple healthy food. From the pasta to the I recommend trying the Galli salad before your main to get an idea of the skills at Galli restaurant.

Whenever you do decide to go, you will be met by a service that guarantees satisfaction. A Corner of

Italy

on your Doorstep

By Narbeh Minassian The Salumeria Rosi Oarmacotto is an Italian Salami shop and in Parma, where they have been running salami shops for decades commonplace in Parma and can be found on virtually every other corner of most Italian towns and villages, the Rosi’s salami shops are exclusive elsewhere in the world, with locations in only two other cities, the other being Paris. There are two small salami shops in New York; one on Amsterdam Avenue and the other on Madison Avenue. Both are small and welcoming, but the restaurant on the former Avenue is designed by Oscar award-winning art director Dante Ferretti. The interior here is inspired by an old ship, which represents how Italian foods were shipped to the States over the last century. A large Arcimboldo style

Once you have tried all that the focus of the menu has to offer, or indeed before, you can try from the Formaggi menu to taste from the impressive collection of cheeses that they offer. And this can all be washed down with any choice from their wine list. Italian food is arguably the most celebrated and most popular cuisine nothing new for us to try from this palate, but such is the depth and variety of the Italian culinary imagination that there is almost always something else to try, and the Salumeria Rosi Oarmacotto is testament

Salumeria Rosi Parmacotto 283 Amsterdam Ave. New York, NY 10023 (212) 877-4801 salumeriarosi.com

is in black and white, except for the region where Parma resides, which is located with colorful representations of the produce sold in the shop. Italian produce selected by Parmacotto to taste on the spot or understand the unique format of this restaurant, it soon becomes clear that this is an inspired system. There are two main parts to the menu: the assaggi di salumi and assaggi della cucina. Assaggi is Italian for ‘tastes’, so what this essentially does is offer you a taste of a very wide variety of things on the menu. This means that you can try virtually all the salami they have to offer from one part of the menu, and any dish from the ‘kitchen tastes’, which includes salads, soups, and hot dishes from the other part.

From cupcakes and macarons to gelato and frozen yogurt, Manhattan truly has an excess of sweets, ensuring you never have to eat the same treat twice, unless you really want to. You’ll certainly want to eat at least one treat time and time again once you’ve experienced Forbidden Fruit NYC, the chocolate dipped fruit confectionary in the West Village that brings contentment to both your sugar craving and your waistline. The colorful Forbidden Fruit NYC storefront may lure you in the door, but the glass encased display of chocolate covered fruits, sparkling like rich edible jewels, will ensure you linger for awhile. Pairing a wide variety of ripe fruit with happens to be executed brilliantly, providing chocoholics with a healthier, guilt-free option that delivers instant satisfaction. Once inside, we started with a dark-chocolate covered strawberry dusted with coconut, which left us happy to oblige when a friendly face behind the counter encouraged us to sample more. From FruitOn-A-Stick, a skewer of cubed melon, apples, bananas slathered in the warm chocolate drizzle of your choosing, there’s an excellent variety of options to be customized with What had been intended as a mid-day snack turned into a fruit-and-chocolate smorgasbord as we experimented In addition to a la carte items, which range from a very affordable $1.35 - $3.65 per single serving, Forbidden Fruit NYC also offers assorted fruit boxes to go, which make an admirable gift. The brand provides catering as well as neighborhood anywhere in Manhattan. A newly launched Chocolateof-the-Month program brings limited edition chocolate white chocolate staples available perennially. This month, there’s Amaretto Milk Chocolate on special, which has the most delicate hint of amaretto and pairs beautifully with the apple slices and banana we tried it on. In December, they’ll serve Peppermint White Chocolate, a seasonally appropriate special, and in January, I’ll be clamoring back

The small, well-kept shop is inviting, and with a focus on eco-friendly packaging and design elements, it’s a business that’s easy to get behind. While the West Village shop is the only location so far, the brand’s passionate owners were clear about their plans to expand, making healthier sweet treats universally accessible. For now, it’s an affordable luxury that we in New York

The bar also allowed a confessional turn of mind, where strangers over a night of a few drinks developed a sense of intimacy that in other circumstances might result in an SDS test a few days later. This was never an issue. Said strangers would talk, laugh, ponder and then part into the waning Saturday night good humored and ready to face what the week would bring. In one of these confessional turns, a mirror of memory, I encountered Janis, a woman in her mid-thirties, petite in stature, nursing a California chardonnay. She then asked me to please pass the “assorted nuts.” Such detail, I liked her already. An hour and a half later, I found out that Janis lived just around the block from Da Filippo on 70th Street. She had a one-year old daughter, Melanie, who she thought was average but average was okay; a husband Irving, who was a nerd, a CPA, but she loved him, in that order. Periodically, she would tell Irving that she needed to get away, not telling him where. He trusted her. She’d come to Da Filippo to just sit by the bar and drink a glass of wine or two, to slip away from her life, which

she did love. Janis stressed that it wasn’t an escape as much as “work release.” I believed her. Having seen my own marriage falter, I was an expert at recognizing the signs. She wasn’t exhibiting any of those. All that being said, I left for the night and said my good-bye to Janis. What’s that you ask? Was my hunch correct about Janis and Irving or with divorce does it take one to know one? Was Melanie average? I couldn’t say. Our schedules never again overlapped, though I did meet many others, seldom the same person twice, which is okay. Da Filippo was like life that way. People slip in and out, gone, no tidy endings, no symmetry, unlike art. And now Da Filippo is gone, the past tense to which I referred earlier. Actually, it has been gone for going on two years, a casualty of the Second Avenue subway. Why this eulogy long after its passing? In his Foreword to “Here Is New York,” written years after the essay, E.B. White wrote: “The longer true of the city, owing to the passage of time and the swing of the pendulum.” But White pointed out, better than I, that “the essential fever of New York has not

changed.” Landscapes change. People, for good or ill, remain the same. olds not yet here, those who will see the Second Avenue subway as much a given as I did Manhattan without elevated lines and good riddance to them and those who chronicle them, those who live in past. Let me tell you as one who has traveled your path. They existed, though I never saw them, and they carried people going to and from their jobs intersecting with other people going to and from their jobs, and sometimes these people who otherwise might not have traded stories about the ebbs spoke casually then honestly and then said their good night never to meet again but always residing in memory. They did this at places in Manhattan too numerous to know that are no longer there. think about when you’re on the Second Avenue subway reading “Here Is New York” on what will surely replace the iPad or whatever your technology du jour, if you think the iPad reference dated, give it some
