hen my team and I began preparing for our August edition, we didn’t think it would be a particularly special edition (not that all of our editions aren’t special). But, boy, were we wrong. Not only have there been a slew of aesthetic changes to both the print and the Internet versions of Resident, this issue also features some of the most stimulating conversations with New York’s heavy-hitters. In terms of editorial content, we have Mayoral Candidate and ultrasuccessful businessman, John Catsimatidis along with his beautiful wife, Margo. Of a truly grand mien, Mr. Catsimatidis had some very interesting things to say. Having gone from rags to riches, he now seeks to reform the New York City educational system to help students from low-income backgrounds succeed. We think he’s on the right track. Michelle-Marie Heinemann – a true success story – was wonderful to speak with. Involved with charities, The Hampton Classic, children’s clothing and the New York/Hamptons social scene, Michelle-Marie is a busy woman with a lot to say. Look out for her, as I believe she will soon become a household name. We also have Paige Davis—known for hosting TLC’s Trading Spaces. She happens to be an acclaimed Broadway actress and volunteer at Volunteers of America. She is particularly fond of the organization’s Operation Backpack, which equips homeless children with the materials they need to go to school and become successful students. Going with the theme of education, we also present our annual educational guide! From college admissions to adult continuing

education, the best private schools in the tri-state area and tips on preparing your children for school, we’ve got it covered! August wouldn’t be the same without our extended travel coverage. Kitty Pilgrim shares her tales from Nantucket and we’ve also featured Kenya, Florida, Bermuda and Sedona! We scour the earth for the best of the best and hope you use us as your go-to source for all of your luxury travel needs. This month we have expanded our real estate coverage. From interior design to the latest trends in the market, we have made a commitment to bringing our readers all of the happenings in the real estate world. We welcome our newest contributors and look forward to seeing this section grow! Lastly, we are extremely proud to showcase our new website! Johnny and I went to check out the dudes who handle them, and one of the handlers just opened his mouth and one of the scorpions crawled out. I was like, ‘Okay, I’m good!’ and walked the hell away. But Johnny said, ‘I want to try that!’ and just shoved it into his mouth. He’s just what you’d imagine the coolest dude you know would be like. “ Johnny Depp says, “At a certain point, just take it down to the bare minimum and concentrate on living life. Pandora Duke Biddle and her daughter Yvie Hentic, Dina Merrill’s grandson Cole Rumbough, Oliver Estreich, Alice Judelson, cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Kenneth Mark, society

band leader Alex Donner, and a hundred others just like them were welcomed to the historic Inn by its owners Marta and Martin White and Corcoran brokers Esther Paster and Kyle Rosko, who whispered that the property was for sale for $23 million. Guests sampled treats from Jean Mackenzie’s Seasons of Southampton and wines from Empire State Cellars. Heather Haux, Leesa Rowland, Nicole Noonan, Aleksandra Milicevic and Elaine Sargent eyed a breathtaking million dollars worth of Sintessi jewelry on display under an ancient oak tree. The chic ruby and diamond poodle pin donated by Jennifer and Michel Piranesi for the Shelter’s auction competed for attention with the adorable adoptable dogs parading on the lawn. John Catsimatidis: A True New Yorker argo Catsimatidis welcomes us into an apartment that spans the entire floor of a classic Fifth Avenue building. The apartment is cozily reminiscent of a home that has been nurtured by a family for generations. Knick-knacks and framed photographs line the walls and daintily stand atop a grand piano as well as next to rows upon rows of encyclopedias on bookshelves. His two children are featured in most. upbringing. Until this point his story has been one of a firstgeneration American’s struggle to make it in this country and to not let his hopeful parents down. Now, there is a sliver of pride bubbling—the jet airplanes are the first mention of a passion in the name of leisure itself in Catsimatidis’ life. He nostalgically recalls of his aviation success: “I had teardrops in my eyes when half the British Airways Terminal at Kennedy Airport was ours; we used to be able to jump on the Concorde anytime we wanted because the officers of the airlines were able to fly each others’ airplanes. He glances at Margo: “She was my co-pilot.

But as we sit down with John and Margo, the views of Central Park gleaming through their draped windows, we are surprisingly USBOTQPSUFE UP th Street in Harlem to what he calls a “backapartment. We hear a story that we have heard before—one that many Americans, and New Yorkers especially, have both heard and lived. In Harlem, Catsimatidis’ family growing up lived in a six-room back apartment that they paid $48 a month for in rent. His parents had just emigrated from Greece after his father lost his job working at a lighthouse. Catsimatidis speaks of the hardship and desperation of his recently wed parents: “They came to America and had to sign the dotted line for immigration that if he couldn’t earn a living and feed his family, they would have to go back.

Margo smiles. While she has not said much so far, her occasional smiles and understanding nods as Catsimatidis recounts his family’s journey evinces her support and admiration for her partner.

Hence, his father worked several jobs as a bus boy and waiter— allowed to work at an Italian restaurant that is still there in Astoria to this day simply because he spoke Italian. Catsimatidis says matter-of-factly: “He fed his family, sent me to schools—he always believed in education.â€? Consequently, Catsimatidis thrived in the public school system within New York City—attending Brooklyn Technical High School and then New York University. It was while he was a student at New York University that he first entered the grocery business: his bread and butter for many years and the foundation of his empire. He turned a failing grocery store into a success and when he was just eight credits short of earning his degree, he dropped out of college to pursue the business full-time. His parents were outraged. But, he says, “I worked hard and had a knack for things.â€? He continued to grow his grocery business and had built ten stores by the age of 24: “I always wanted to give our customers the best deal, and that was the beginning of the success.â€? The grocery stores mushroomed into a real estate business as a young Catsimatidis worried about the leases on his stores ending. And the timing couldn’t have been better. He tells us of the market at the time: “Real estate values were in the toilet and I started buying real estate because I figured, worse come to worst, I could put a grocery store in them‌Then I woke up one day and all of a sudden they were worth a ton of money.â€? And so his real estate business boomed—making way for his passion for aviation. He had always had a desire to go to air force camp and become a jet pilot but, being a son of immigrant parents with an immigrant’s hustle to succeed, survival in New York City took precedent. When his aviation business took off, he finally had the opportunity to get his pilot’s license. Atlantic City Airport in New Jersey opened up in 1977 and he spotted an opportunity for aviation transportation to and from Massachusetts and Connecticut to Atlantic City for the weekends. This was the beginning of Net Jets, later sold to Warren Buffet. While Catsimatidis loved the airplanes, he flew them solely for pleasure. And you can tell by the sound of his voice: his intonation shifts, his brows are not furrowed and his eyes no longer as serious as they were when he was discussing his

Together they have reared two children: a daughter who also attended his alma mater and a son. He alludes to a West Point nomination he received as a high school student and tries to explain his path: “I always felt, as they teach you at West Point, that you always take care of your family—and after that your obligation is to your companies and community and church.â€? Having been appointed as the highest layperson possible in the Greek Orthodox Church, Catsimatidis was in charge of eleven EJPDFTFT BOE DIVSDIFT BSPVOE UIF DPVOUSZ )F DPMMBCPSBUFE with the Jewish and Catholic communities to foster unity. Within the community, Margo and he feel particularly attached to kids’ charities. He refers to their work with the Police Athletic League and the League’s importance in terms of getting children off the streets. He is frustrated by the number of children hanging out on the streets after school because they simply have no place to go and tells us: “We can’t save all of them, but we can save another 10 or 20 percent of them. We believe in giving back and creating hope. That’s what I want to do with these kids: give them hope that they too can escape and do well.â€? Margo and he are also involved with the Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Foundations. Politics is a natural next step for Catsimatidis. His candidacy for mayor is almost extension of the responsibility he feels one has for his community: a culmination of the traditional values with which he was reared as well as his love for New York City. He walks us to a wall packed with photographs of some of his favorite moments and points to a photo of him with Bill Clinton. He tells us: “I admire Bill Clinton; he was one of the smartest Presidents I ever met.â€? In fact, for his mayoral candidacy, he refers to one of Hillary Clinton’s strategies in New York City during the senatorial race: “I am doing what Hillary did. I’m visiting every one of those little towns—every part of the city, I’m visiting people, talking to people and relating to people. New York City is B CJH DJUZ CVU JU T NBEF VQ PG MJUUMF UPXOT *U T NBEF VQ PG ethnicities.â€? It’s not difficult for Catsimatidis to relate to the New York $JUZ QPQVMBUJPO 8JUIJO UIFTF MJUUMF UPXOT BNPOH UIF ĂŤWF boroughs, 37% of the current population has emigrated from other countries. Communities in New York City are permeated by immigrants who have fled from economic hardship and other forms of adversity in their home countries. The mayoral candidate is onto something when he alludes to the diversity of the city: it is impossible to pinpoint an ethnicity or a background to attach to the “realâ€? New Yorker. In Harlem and Astoria, where Catsimatidis’ roots lie, as well as throughout the rest of the city, people are living the immigrant struggle that his parents fought through and the quest to fulfill first-generation hopes as he did. He refers to his ability to relate to New Yorkers struggling to find jobs and make a living in the city: “My father was a member of the union; I understand and I feel for those people.â€?

For over 15 years, John Catsimatidis has partnered with St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters to improve the lives of New York’s less fortunate.

Hence, his top three policy matters hit the core of a New Yorker’s concerns as well as strive to maintain what he is most proud of in the city. He speaks of keeping the city safe and his support for Police Commissioner Ray Kelley: “In Detroit you have 64 murders for every 100,000 people, in Chicago you have 20 murders for every 100,000 people. You know how many there are in New York? Less than five for every 100,000. Ray Kelley has kept our city safe.” Bred in the New York City public school system and then one of New York’s most prominent universities, it is no surprise that Catsimatidis places a huge emphasis on education. The mayoral candidate proposes teaching students a trade to battle dropout rates—he argues that guiding students to specialize in trades will “give them a chance to the middle class way of life instead of making them prisoners of poor neighborhoods.” The third policy matter he feels strongly about is reinstating a World’s Fair in New York City—a staple of Fiorello H. LaGuardia’s tenure as mayor and a way to bring jobs, companies and tourists to New York. He views the World’s Fair as an opportunity to let the city shine and grow economically. This is hardly the only aspect of LaGuardia’s mayorship that Catsimatidis admires. He refers to the famed mayor as his hero and proudly quotes him: “It’s not about being a Republican. It’s not about being a Democrat. It’s about being a real New Yorker.” •

Nantucket By Kitty Pilgrim There are normal beach communities, and then there is Nantucket. Of course there are common joys to all seaside places—a pleasurable day spent riding the surf, the “ahhh” of that first stretch-out on the hot sand, a dripping ice cream cone in the afternoon sun, and the lovely taste of seafood in a lively restaurant, while nursing tender shoulders, pink with sunburn. Nantucket has all of these things. But what draws me to the island year after year is the sense of history and heritage, literature and the arts.

Photograph by Carol Seitz Resident "VHVTU t

TRAVEL I usually make two trips to Nantucket every year. The first excursion is in June for the wonderful Nantucket Book Festival, where famous authors talk about their new releases and give insights into their crafts. I have the great fortune to have a summer book release every year, and this festival serves as the annual kick-off to my book tour. The Nantucket Book Festival always attracts luminaries from the literary world as well as popular mass-market authors. What makes it unique is the good portion of local authors that sit under a large party tent, happy to sign their cherished publications and talk about life on the island. The weekend events begin with an opening cocktail party in a lovely old whaling house on Orange Street, followed by a literary discussion at Old South Church. There, in pews that could have been filled by whalers

and their families, the literary discussion begins. All weekend there are panels and readings, as well as author signings at the charming Mitchell’s Book Corner on the main street. The upstairs reading room on the second floor of this bookstore is not to be missed—a lovely place to browse books about the history of the island. In June the weather is brisk— sweaters required at night. Hearty food seems right: creamy clam chowder and crab cakes. The streets are mostly empty until mid-afternoon. On a morning walk there are only local residents taking their dogs for strolls. I often stop into the wonderful Petticoat Row Bakery for a morning pastry and coffee. The name is evocative of the whaling era; while the men were gone to sea, the women of the island became very entrepreneurial, opening up their own shops to sell food, clothing

and supplies. The shops became known as “Petticoat Row.” The strong female tradition is thriving. The farmer’s market on Saturday features a cornucopia of local delicacies and handcrafts— the tables mostly commandeered by women entrepreneurs. At this time of year in June, it is easy to feel the isolation of the island. Part of the appeal is the remoteness from the mainland; some 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, it takes careful planning to get here, especially in high season, July and August, when ferries are fully booked. The Native Americans who lived here, the Wampanoags, are credited with the word natocke, meaning “far away island.” A traditional nickname for Nantucket is “Little Grey Lady of the Sea”—referring to the way the place looks when it is shrouded in fog. In June the

weather can be iffy, sometimes blazing sun, at other times moody mist. Nantucket is miniscule, compared to Long Island or even the nearby Martha’s Vineyard. Just 15 miles in length, with an average breadth of 4.5 miles, it seems like a toy village surrounded by beach. Walking up the cobblestoned main street one can almost see how it was one of the premier whaling villages of the eastern seaboard. Nantucket was such a center of seafaring that novelist Herman Melville, in Moby Dick, wrote: “Two thirds of this terraqueous globe are the Nantucketer’s. For the sea is his; he owns it, as Emperors own empires.” At this time of year, early in the season, I stay at the gorgeous Jared Coffin House on Broad Street. it as a family home and it is emblematic of the kind of affluence that came from the trading of whale oil. A threestory brick mansion has a stately luxurious feel. Now a charming inn, the rooms look out on the cobblestoned streets. Morning breakfast is set out in the parlor, where guests convene before their day’s adventures. My second excursion to the island usually comes in midAugust, for my birthday. The experience is totally different. This time we arrive by private boat and dock in the marina. By now the village is in full swing. The streets are crowded with vacationers, and shops stay open until late into the evening. It has a festive, nautical feel – maybe the way it was when the whaling ships came in. Tourists are buying scrimshaw and the lovely woven baskets that are so distinctive of the island. Shops are full of chic beachwear – I

think that Nantucket has a very distinct style, more so than other beach resorts. Women favor Lilly Pulitzer and Vineyard Vines sport ensembles, and men often wear “Nantucket Reds,” the brick-colored cotton trousers, cinched with a needle-point belt of nautical motif - anchors, signal flags, or whales. Boat shoes are de rigeur. Somehow such traditional garb feels entirely right. In August the yacht basin is crammed with luxury craft – handsome sailing vessels and motor yachts of enormous proportions. Walking along the dock in the evening, you are met with one fantastic vision after the next. In fact, I have taken ideas for the yachts in my novels from this very array. I have also had the pleasure of being invited to the Nantucket Yacht Club by friends on the island. The large clubhouse has

the gracious feel of an era gone by – velvet lawn, tennis courts and families gathered together having a Sunday afternoon lunch. Old yachting pictures are on the walls—sepia, or black and white. There are heavy wicker lounge chairs, with upholstery in navy nautical stripe, and Nantucket baskets hold brilliant blue hydrangeas blossoms and white and pink snapdragons. Sitting with friends one evening looking out at the beautiful lighthouse at the mouth of the harbor, they tell me of a century-old tradition of the island. When leaving by sea and passing the lighthouse in the harbor, a two pence coin cast into the water will ensure safe passage and a return to the island. That afternoon when our boat was leaving, I scrambled for my wallet. “Two pence” was all that was required, but I threw a quarter into the waves –probably too much, but I intend on

coming back to Nantucket for many years to come. •

Look out for the paperback version of The Stolen Chalice.

After the dreariest winter, I woke up one morning and said, “Make it sunny and make it snappy.” I couldn’t take a rocket to the sun, but I could jet to the moon, and that’s where I went – the Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort. This outpost in fabulous Cancun has a 27hole golf course, luxury spa, Brazilian, Italian, Asian, Caribbean and Mexican restaurants and promised to take all-inclusive care of all my earthly sybaritic needs. In just a few short hours, I found myself on the Sunrise Terrace of the Moon Palace, gazing at the shimmering sapphire of the Mexican Caribbean. Unable to tear myself away, I dined al fresco, trying to imagine exactly which section of the parti-colored sea before me had been home to the fish I was eating. As the shadows lengthened, I retired to the Sky Bar, where top-shelf spirits flowed like a spring from the rock struck by Moses. This,

along with the modern minimalism and chic ambiance of the place, noticeably improved my already heightened mood. I could only wonder what otherworldly wonders awaited in this pleasure dome. The next day, a breakfast of tropical fruits and fresh juice in my room prepared me for my journey of discovery. Little did I know that dolphins live on the moon. I spent a good part of the morning swimming with the playful cetaceans in their dolphinarium. Then it was beach time. “Beach” does not do justice to the sugar-white confection lapped by crystalline waters that stretched to the horizon. Steps away, I investigated a pool of awesome dimensions with a swim-up bar where I drank a fresh margarita while simultaneously being in the drink. As night fell, I moved to the Moonlight

By Christopher A. Pape Terrace to savor more of the traditional cuisine of Mexico. Dining in the moonlight while overlooking the ocean redefines what relaxation can be. For a nightcap, I retired to Noir. The club’s onyx-toned walls and luminous accents mimic the night for which it is named. I rose early the next morning to golf on the Moon Spa’s Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Players navigate through native vegetation, wetlands and strategically placed bunkers. Each of the three nine-hole courses offers a distinctive environment that challenges professionals and amateurs alike. Long before I could sample all the cuisines and delights offered at the Moon Spa, it was time to return to earth, or at least New York City. I can happily report the inhabitants of the Moon Spa & Resort are friendly and well worth visiting. t

ne of my favorite games growing up was Word Association. Everyone knows the rules and they hardly bear repeating. I think of myself as quite good at the game so it came as a surprise to me during my visit at Sedona, Arizona the word most frequently on the tips of everyone’s tongue and most linked to this beautiful city is vortex. Everywhere I went – a national park, canoeing, hiking and even when I went out to eat, the residents were enthralled with the idea of positive energy. While I may not be a devotee of such New Age thinking, it was easy to understand – with its stunning scenery and perfect climate – why so many people love Sedona. And what better way to experience all that Sedona had to offer than staying at its most luxurious property, L’Auberge de Sedona. Situated on the banks of Oak Creek in Sedona’s outstanding Red Rock Country, L’Auberge de Sedona offers both tranquility and energized activity. With a variety of extravagant accommodations, this luxury hotel makes sure you get the most out of your stay. One of the most romantic choices is the Creekside Cottage. Here you can enjoy a wood-burning fireplace, spacious decks and a romantic shower setting under Sedona’s starry skies. For views of Sedona’s red rocks, the Vista Suite (where I stayed) and Vista Cottage both offer oversized picture windows for a panoramic view of Snoopy

Rock, Giants Thumb and Elephant Rock. In the Spa Cottage, you can enjoy a spa-like experience with Jacuzzi tubs, dual-jet showers and double vanities. You can also relax and enjoy a glass of wine on the large outdoor terrace. For those who like being surrounded by nature, the Garden Cottage is surrounded by foliage and trees, which makes for a great evening by the wood-burning fireplace or spacious deck. The Garden Cottage is also dog-friendly and offers a wide variety of pet services and amenities including: various sized dog beds, food and water bowls, goodie bags containing a toy, treats, clean-up bags and a map of nearby walking trails, pet sitting, dog walking, leashes and information about the nearest pet store and veterinary services. Another great option is the two-story Lodge. Two oversized fireplaces and comfortable seating are an invitation for guests to relax in the main lobby. Each room is decorated with traditional European décor and they all have a private patio or balcony. Lastly, the Creek House is ideal for those who are traveling as a group. This place features five private bedrooms and 2,500 square-feet of space. Each bedroom has its own private bath and the downstairs bedroom is wheelchair accessible.

TRAVEL What would five-star property be without an amazing restaurant? L’Auberge de Sedona doesn’t disappoint. Dining at L’Auberge Restaurant on Oak Creek is a singular experience not to be missed. Named “One of the Top Ten Restaurants in the Southwestâ€? by CondĂŠ Nast Traveler, the cuisine is French with a modern American approach. Dine in the natural forested beauty of Sedona, under a canopy of cottonwood and sycamore trees alongside the creek. It is utterly romantic and thoroughly magical, especially as the sun sets. I thoroughly enjoyed (and perhaps even gained weight from) my dining experience at the property. From a traditional preparation of foie gras to modern interpretations of tortellini, each creation was mouthwatering and clearly made with care. This commitment to quality is also evident in the truly magical moments I experience at the hotel spa. It is without exaggeration to say that the full body scrub that I received was one of the top three treatments at a spa that I have ever received. By the end of the treatment, all of the stress that I had carried with me to Arizona had melted away. Aside from the excellent treatment I received, the spa offers other options for a soothing and relaxing experience. Spa therapies relieve tension, restore your body and provide a sense of well-being. Outdoor yoga classes are offered at sunrise and are designed to keep you in touch with the spiritual surroundings. Treatments can be even more intimate with a private

massage by the creek or in the comfort of your cottage. Mention should be made of the vortexes in Sedona. They are believed to be created from spiraling spiritual energy and the locations are said to facilitate prayer, meditation and healing. The energy of a vortex interacts with a person’s inner self and cannot be completely explained without the experience. L’Auberge offers vortex hikes so guests can indulge this captivating experience. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a hiking adventure or a spiritual sojourn, L’Auberge de Sedona is the perfect place. With a friendly and knowledgeable staff, immaculate rooms, tasty creations and a location in the heart of the town, the property rests at the summit of choices in this most sublime setting. All the seasons offer a varied and interesting experience and don’t hesitate to go in the low season, which can offer just as an interesting experience as in the high. I awoke from a dead sleep and sprang to my feet. It was the unfamiliar sound of hooves on the cobblestone pathway outside of my tent. By the sound of it, I immediately ruled out soft-footed lions, elephants and hippos. As I tiptoed over to the tent window, I saw the shadow. Large horns, long graceful neck. The mysterious silhouette stretched all the way to the top of the tent. Then another completely foreign sound -- slow, rhythmic grunts.

Our next few nights were spent at Olare Mara Kempinski in the Masai Mara. After a lavish welcome dinner, I was escorted back to my tent by a 6-foot-5 Masai warrior wearing a traditional red plaid shuka. That night, as I drifted off to sounds of grunts and splashes of water, I knew exactly why I needed his protection; we were very close to the hippo hangout, a riverbed on the property. Not only that, but lions have also been known to approach the camp, as well as, a resident leopard named Acacia who, not surprisingly, loves to perch in one of the many acacia trees on property. All things that you’d need a Masai warrior for. This, no doubt,

A Family Story A s a mother in New York City, life can be hectic, but Michelle-Marie Heinemann has it under control. Not only is she a wife and mother of two, but she’s also an expressionist painter, involved with multiple charities and an avid equestrian. But it doesn’t stop there, she’s also opening a high-end children’s boutique this fall. Yet with all her success, Michelle-Marie makes it a priority to always spend quality time with her family.

Opening a children’s clothing boutique... is something that I’ve been planning for quite some time because there are really just a handful of fabulous children’s stores... Michelle-Marie has been a passionate expressionist painter for the last 20 years and has enjoyed every second of it. “I’ve had shows all over the world and my paintings were even featured in the windows of Tiffany’s. Robert Rufino, who was their VP of creative services discovered my paintings at the National Arts Club and chose to put them in the 5th Avenue windows. It was an honor to have them featured alongside Tiffany’s magnificent jewelry.” Her recent exhibition in St. Barth’s showcased 22 of her paintings and attracted her friends from all over the world. Michelle-Marie has a new show coming up in Gstaad, Switzerland, at the legendary Gstaad Palace. “I’m very excited about it. My family and I are going to Switzerland before the exhibition to make sure everything will be perfect. I’m thrilled about taking my children to Gstaad because they haven’t been and it’s just so beautiful.” Aside from her success as a painter, she is involved with several charities including Blankets for Warmth, which she founded 15 years ago. This non-profit organization is a seasonal charity, which allows Michelle-Marie to collect blankets for the homeless during the warm weather months. “This charity has a direct impact on the homeless; we take our trucks out on the streets at 8 p.m. There are specific locations around the city where the homeless wait so we know where to stop. After the Coalition for the Homeless distributes food, we give out blankets. Last winter I started to incorporate a

toiletry set. I include a tube of toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss and a little mirror so after they eat they can freshen up and feel good about their teeth.” On November 1st, Michelle-Marie is hosting her first gala for Blankets for Warmth at the Carlyle Hotel. She expects a hundred major donors and several celebrities have expressed interest in helping call attention to the organization’s mission. “It’s important to raise awareness about the issues facing the homeless. I’m proud we help people in other countries but we also have hungry and homeless families in New York City. I hope more people will get involved with Blankets for Warmth. And it’s very easy; all you need to do is donate one blanket. What may not be a big deal for us is a big deal for them. They use it for warmth and they also use it to cuddle with, almost like a security blanket. I see them walking around the streets with my blankets, especially at the Saint Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue. It makes me feel so good because I know they’re using the blankets and keeping warm in the evening.” Along with Blankets for Warmth, Michelle-Marie is involved with an equestrian charity called Equine Resolution. It’s a new charity that focuses on rehabilitating horses that have been put out to pasture. They focus on getting these horses healthy so that they’re not put down. “There’s a real need for this. Show horses can have a hard life when they reach a certain level.” This spring she supported Prize4Life, which is seeking a cure for Lou Gehrig’s disease. “I

PROFILE attended their gala and it was very moving, it’s a terrible illness. I was heartened to learn about the scientific advances that have been made in ALS.” She is also on the board of the Diller-Quaile School of Music, a children’s school on the Upper East Side. For the last six years she has co-chaired the Museum of Natural History’s Family Party. “It’s a wonderful event they have every fall, which opens up the museum to families. I love being involved and doing what I can to help out. Now that I have children I like doing things that are centered around children.” Her other charitable interests include the American Red Cross and this month she will attend the Southampton Hospital’s 55th Annual Summer Party chaired by Jean Shafiroff. Michelle-Marie’s newest project is a high-end children’s clothing store, called Hudson & Hyacinth. The store was inspired by her children, Hudson, six and a half, and Hyacinth, two. The line will go from infants to tweens and teens. “I want to design a collection my children can grow into. I didn’t want to do it to age nine and then have my children turn ten and not have anything for them in my stores. I’m creating the clothes for Hudson and Hyacinth so I’ll always be excited about them.” All of the clothes are hand-made in Paris and London and her first three stores will open in Paris, St. Barth’s and on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. “I’ve been working on this idea for quite some time because there are just a handful of wonderful children’s stores. I can’t wait because this is something I will never become bored with. I’ll have my children, they’ll grow up and have their own children and I’ll be a grandmother. It’s something that I will keep doing and doing. Eventually I plan on having stores all over the world.”

As if painting, charity work and opening stores all over the world weren’t enough; her family is active in the equestrian world. Her husband Jon Heinemann plays polo and both her children compete on the show circuit. “It’s a family-oriented sport. It’s all about supporting one another. When my husband plays polo on Sunday’s, after the match we have an Argentine style barbecue. All the families come and the children run around and play and fish in the pond. It’s just beautiful and something we enjoy doing as a family.” Last year, Hudson competed in HITS in Saugerties and he was the Grand Champion, “I am very proud of him. And my baby daughter, Hyacinth, started riding and she already rides by herself, of course her instructor walks beside her, but she’s truly riding. It’s rewarding for me to see how much my children love animals and being outside. I cherish that about them.” This August they will both be competing in the Hampton Classic Horse Show, “Hudson’s going to do Short Stirrup and Hyacinth will be doing Leadline. I’m planning on riding as well. We have a lot of friends in the Hamptons so we have a whole week planned for showing, riding, and celebrating.” Michelle-Marie loves living her busy life in New York and wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’ve been in New York for 22 years. Quite frankly, I feel like I should have been born here. Being a New Yorker means it feels like it’s your home; walking into a boutique or café and feeling like it’s yours. You feel like you belong in the community. I think that’s a true New Yorker.” t michellemarieheinemann.com blankets4warmth.org michellemarieart.com

Paige Davis A New Yorker Gives Back To Her Beloved City By Gunjan J. Sewhani esident sat down with Paige Davis, a transplanted New Yorker who has turned her passion for one of the most quintessential New York phenomena, Broadway, into a means for helping the city’s children in need. And what great timing it was: our August issue is all about the “back-to-school” season. Paige has worked extensively with Operation Backpack—providing brand-new backpacks and school supplies for kids in our city’s homeless shelters.

when you have a recognizable name and face, you feel a blessing to be able to shed light on causes that are important to you and you also feel an obligation.” The year after Paige became involved with Volunteers of America, other luminaries such as Susan Sarandon, Kevin Bacon and the Mets players joined the organization in addressing the lack of access to educational supplies that hinder New York City’s homeless youth.

Paige’s musical theater background has brought her to the stage on Broadway, around the world and eventually to television with TLC’s Trading Spaces. Trading Spaces was the cultural and cult television phenomenon and the means by which America first got to know Paige by name. She says: “Trading Spaces was really the catalyst for a new genre of television. I became known as a host and by my own name as opposed to a character.”

Her passion for the work is contagious. With a glisten in her eye, she reveals to us: “The dirty little secret about volunteering is that it’s the most selfish thing you can do. It can feel like a chore at first but, the second you get involved, you realize it gives you such a powerful feeling—especially with a program that’s so hands-on.” She describes watching volunteers who are so personally invested in packing backpacks that they choose school supplies as if they are for their own children.

Today she is grateful to be able to use this status as a prominent New Yorker to help Volunteers of America-Greater New York, a cause very dear to her heart. She explains how her Broadway and television experience has exploded the world of possibilities for her professionally as well as philanthropically: “I don’t think I’m alone—

Operation Backpack tailors its school supplies to the needs of students from kindergarten through high school. Every backpack goes to a homeless child who really needs it. Speaking to the everyday struggles of a homeless person, she gets to the root of the problem: “A backpack

PROFILE makes a difference between a kid being excited to go to school and not wanting to go. We all deeply understand what it must be like to have less than your classmates and if you are going to school like that, you are going to feel less than. You’re afraid of being discovered because homelessness, unfortunately, still has this very misplaced veil of shame. Kids are terrified. Operation Backpack gives kids the confidence and dignity to go to school as their housed classmates do. Hence, Operation Backpack aims to equip students with the school supplies that they need. Its umbrella organization, Volunteers of America, has shelters and programs that are geared toward helping the homeless find jobs and, eventually, housing that they can afford. Perhaps it’s her musical theater background, or perhaps it’s just her zeal for her work with Volunteers of America, but Paige’s entire face lights up in admiration for the donors when she talks about getting brand-new protractors and backpacks out to thousands of children. While her mannerisms are generally animated, they reach an exceptionally elevated note when she describes being able to use her voice and musical theater gifts at events that benefit Operation Backpack: a seamless melding of her passions for theater and helping the New York City community.

These two communities, albeit discrete, are both manifestations of the city that she has fallen in love with so completely. Paige currently resides on the Upper West Side. When asked what makes a person a true New Yorker, the first adjective she uses is “resilient. She elaborates: “I just think you gotta be able to bounce back because it’s a tough city. They always say if you can make it here you can make it anywhere and, you have to believe that or the city will eat you alive. But that’s just because it’s a train—it’s in motion, it doesn’t stop. I love that it never sleeps; I love that it never, ever sleeps. And Paige doesn’t either. She was recently nominated for a Daytime Emmy award for her show on the Oprah Winfrey Network: Home Made Simple. She continues to dedicate her time to Volunteers of America and Operation Backpack. Of course, you can’t keep Paige off of Broadway. She was most recently in a triumphant return as Roxie in Chicago. Back to School As the summer starts to come to a close, children start thinking about going back to school, some with feelings of excitement and others “feeling bummed.” So have they learned anything over their summer with you and the family – are they returning to school more confident and able? I recently had an interesting experience with my own family, which really made me think. Remember when you were a child, riding around in cars without seatbelts, eating worms, riding bikes without helmets and out until late with neighborhood friends – a lot has changed since then – but you can still find that freedom. We took a vacation in France this year in a small family friendly resort (This sounds outlandish – but I grew up in Europe – and they are much cheaper than US hotels). A family from Ireland was staying in the apartment below us. On the first afternoon my two children went to the Kids Camp on their own and made friends with the five Irish girls (ages 2-9). Later that evening, after dinner, two of the Irish children – the seven year old and three year old came knocking on my door to see if my kids could come out to play. It was 9pm – my kids were in bed. The next night the same thing happened only this time – with a deep breath - we let them go. It’s still light in much of Europe in July at 10pm. I told my two to stay together – they had a ball and I collected them at 10:30pm. The following morning I went to the shop to get bread and milk with my kids, the Irish seven year old was there on

her own. The French speaking staff asked her (as best they could) what she wanted. “Seven croissants, three bottles of milk and two baguettes please- my Da’s stuck in bed” she told them. They gave her the items and she gave them the money. It was the same currency for her – the Euro is used in France and Southern Ireland but she had just completed a transaction in a foreign country in a different language, I was impressed. Later that day she came calling again to pick up my seven year old because she had earned three Euro’s doing a chore (I cant say what it was!) and wanted my seven year old to go to the shop with her so they could spend it together. This was a great experience for my seven year old – no parent standing by to bail her out of trouble. They figured it out and came back with the appropriate level of junk that one can buy in a resort shop with three Euro’s. After seeing his sister shop on her own, my three year old ventured into the store with his friend (also three) – they didn’t do quite so well and I did have to bail them out! So, as the fun starts to come to an end and the children prepare to go back to school, I know that with everything we did this summer, the one lasting moment will be my children’s first experience handling money without any supervision. This small opportunity let my kid’s feel empowered, responsible and like a big kid! And best PG BMM UIFZ MFBSOFE TPNFUIJOH ΉΉt

The College Admissions Process By Anna Ryan

N

ot that long ago I began the lengthy and tedious process of applying to many different colleges in hopes I would be accepted into my number one choice. While the process of applying and waiting for a response may be daunting, it’s really not that bad. As I discuss what I went through and what you can expect, I’ll give you tips to help you through your process. When you’re deciding where you want to go to college, keep your options open and always have a backup plan. It may be tough to handle, but you may have to face the reality of not being accepted into your first pick. I found it helpful to speak with my high school guidance counselor to discuss the different options that would be available to me. Distance can also be a factor in determining where you go to college. I knew I didn’t want to stay in my hometown or surrounding area, but I also knew I didn’t want to be so far away that I wouldn’t be able to visit my family during the holidays. Who knows, maybe you want to go to school across the country to fulfill opportunities you may not be able experience here. If you’re stuck on deciding how far away you actually want to go, make a list of pros and cons to help you decide. Once you know what colleges you want to apply to, get ready to set aside a couple of hours for the admissions process. You will have to

fill out countless forms of personal information and be prepared to write an admissions essay. Most of these essays want you to discuss your accomplishments, highlight your goals and explain why you should be accepted. However, the essays are not always the same. Make sure you read the prompt very carefully and do not simply copy and paste from a previous admissions essay. You may also need to send a transcript and a letter of recommendation. Sometimes you may need to send two letters of recommendation. Make sure you ask your teachers or mentors early on for a letter of recommendation so they have an ample amount of time to get back to you. And now you wait. It may take weeks to hear back and the waiting period can make you anxious, but once you get that acceptance letter you feel relieved. If you get a rejection letter, don’t be discouraged. You just have to wait for the other colleges to get back to you. Once you finally have the college you want to go to, respond in a timely manner so you can sort out housing, dining and orientation details. You may also have to take a writing and math test which will determine the proper level of general education classes you have to take, or to simply omit you from them. Get involved in as many clubs and activities as possible. It will make for a more enjoyable experience and you will make tons of friends. College is a place to start a new and exciting chapter in your life; so NBLF TVSF UP FOKPZ JU t

Teaching Dog Safety By Victoria Stilwell

According to the Humane Society of the United States, 50 percent of children will be bitten by a dog before their 12th birthday. Children under the age of 5 are most likely to be bitten, and most of these bites come from a dog that the child knows, such as the family dog or that of a relative or friend.

much harder for a child to misunderstand canine body language and miss vital warning signals. Parents and guardians need to be responsible for their children’s interactions with any dog and young children should never be left unsupervised with a dog at any time.

Why are children more likely to be bitten by dogs than adults? Children move fast and these movements can stimulate a dog’s prey drive and chase instinct. Children talk in higher pitched voices than adults, which can make some dogs fearful. Children may frustrate a dog with rough play and teasing or inadvertently inflict pain with the pull of a tail or a poke in the eye. Younger children are closer to a dog’s eye level, making it easier for a dog to feel threatened by eye-to-eye contact and for the child to be bitten in the face. It’s

In general dogs make wonderful companions but need to be treated with care and respect. Most dogs are very friendly but others show aggression because they’re fearful, frustrated or protecting something that is important to them. It’s vital that both adults and children recognize the signals of stress and discomfort. Yawning, lip licking, turning away and cowering are all signs that signal stress. More overt signals include lip lifting, snarling, growling and snapping, all warnings designed to tell a perceived threat to back away.

People can keep themselves safe by following a few simple rules: t Never touch a dog that is unknown to you. t Even if you know the dog, always ask permission from the owner first and if permission is given always let the dog come into your space. Don’t lean over and pet a dog on the top of the head as this can be perceived as threatening. Pet on the back and look for wiggly, relaxed body language and a willingness to engage. If you feel a dog stiffen when you touch it, stop all contact immediately. t Don’t touch a dog that has been tied up or left at the end of a chain in a yard, outside a store or behind a fence t Let sleeping dogs sleep and eating dog eat! t Don’t take a bone or toy away from a dog if it’s actively playing with it. t In general dogs don’t like being hugged. Be gentle with any dog and don’t engage in rough play. •

ather than zipping through the forest canopy like most traditional zipline tours – the SkyRider tour at Hunter Mountain mostly abandons this approach and seems to ask the question “how can one get from this mountain to that mountain (which incidentally is over a ½ mile away) in the scariest way possible?” Obviously the logical answer is – “string up a cable, attach a pulley to it and jump!” (Now, for full disclosure here – they do make you wear a safety harness and a helmet – they’re not crazy (at least that’s what they kept telling me). The first of the 5 different ziplines on this course is the longest, highest and fastest – stretching over 3,200 feet across the valley that separates two mountain peaks. As you can guess, some that approach the first take-off platform never actually take that daunting first step. Confronted with the reality that they will soon be hanging 600 feet above the valley floor below and that they will have been placed there by someone they just met, is a bit overwhelming. For this reason they developed “Zipline Pilot Training School” at the start of each tour. As much a confidence building - get to know the guides who will have your life in their hands for the next 3 hours – session, as it is a training session in proper zipline technique. According to Bradd

Morse though who designed, built and runs this impressive facility “The training school is an essential part of the tour experience. We get people who are completely out of their element here, and it’s a way for us to calm them down & get them ready for what’s coming...most of the time we succeed” That “most of the time” is why they don’t recommend starting off with the Skyrider tour if you have never ziplined before, or have a fear of heights. “The SkyRider tour is definitely not for everyone and honestly the Mid-Mountain tour is more than enough excitement for many and a perfect intro to ziplining” says Morse. “We don’t want to scare the crap out of people, we just want everyone to have fun...well, maybe a little of both” Tours run throughout the winter months also and foliage season is absolutely spectacular. I

was invited to the atelier of B Michael on Seventh Avenue to see his new ready to wear collection, B Michael America Red. I was very interested for two reasons:Â his couture collection, started in 1999, is very beautiful and well made and wonder of wonders, his clothes are actually made in America, right here on Seventh Avenue.

I wasn’t disappointed. His ready to wear is made with the same craftsmanship and attention to detail as his couture. And his price points are surprisingly low, especially considering the quality. I saw a white dress with a matching black coat for $370. That’s $370 for both pieces! And they’re made right here. I kept asking B Michael about it and he said it’s all about his commitment to himself to make all his clothes here - even the labels - to show it can be done. I was intrigued with the silk fabric for one of his dresses which had machine-embroidered multicolored yarn stripes. Some of the line is made of silk, cotton, wool and some fabrics are man-made. Sizes are 2 up to 18. Macy’s carries the line in its flagship store here and other branches around the country. The price points start at $195 and go up to $500. When I asked who wears his clothes, he protested that he didn’t like to “kiss and tell,â€? but did allow that Amy Fine Collins, Nancy Wilson, Beyonce Knowles and many socialites and corporate wives are ardent fans. And, of course, when she picked up her Tony for “A Trip to Bountiful,â€? La Dolce

Vita in Wildwood, NJ By W. A. Muller ive the La Dolce Vita lifestyle at Little Italy in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey. If you’re ever in the mood for mouthwatering Italian delicacies then look no further than this beloved establishment. Owned and operated by Chef Giovanni Sanzone and his wife Sandy, the restaurant has been serving customers for over two decades. Little Italy is the next best thing to actually being in Italia. Just like his homeland (Giovanni was born in Switzerland and raised in Sicily), the restaurant is formulated on the idea of the piazza – open-air spaces where one visits different vendors and markets, relaxes in the delightful atmosphere and watches people going about their business – Little Italy is a 3-dimensional experience that offers customers the chance to go to a bakery, fish market or café. It is simultaneously a visual and culinary feast. With freshly baked bread made on site, fresh seafood combinations and masterfully conceived creations made by Sanzone like penne alla Giovanni – a creamy white sauce with garlic, sun dried tomatoes, broccoli, red peppers and grilled chicken atop penne pasta

– Little Italy will leave you begging for more! There are also aromatic steak options (try the Italian Surf & Turf – 6oz Filet mignon broiled to your liking and shrimp scampi sautéed in butter, fresh garlic and fresh herbs) and chicken dishes that will make you demand more. The chicken (you can also have veal) Saltimbocca is a particular standout. Here it is sautéed in butter, topped with imported ham and melted mozzarella cheese in a light brown sauce.

It’s not often that restaurants manage to delight every sense and nothing to be desired. When Giovanni first envisioned his restaurant, he sought a transporting experience, which would introduce Italy to his neighbors in Wildwood. It is a safe bet to say he’s done just that (and much more)! •

In the seafood category, the pesce spada alla Siciliana with fresh Swordfish, crabmeat and seasoned with Italian herbs, bread crumbs and broiled to perfection is a must have! The fish is flaky and moist while the breadcrumbs add texture and the herbs needed flavor. It’s one of the most balanced dishes on the entire menu. To bring the dolce in La Dolce Vita, all of the desserts are imported directly from Miliano. With options like classic Tiramisu, Coppa Caffe and invigorating sorbets, these delicious desserts are sure to be the perfect ending to an authentic Italian meal.

Urie’s: With over 50 years in the industry, the restaurant is known for their sumptuous seafood selections, sizzling steaks and stunning seaside views; Urie’s can’t be missed. Here you can unwind for a nice dinner or drinks with friends. Adding to the beachy feel of the place is their great choice of music. If you eat nothing else at Urie’s than you must eat their crab. It’s to die for! Acclaimed as the “best all you can eat crab,” in Southern New Jersey, each crustacean is fresh, juicy and tender. Other choices like oysters, shrimp, clams and mussels abound. Along with crab-stuffed lobster tail, the menu contains many finger-licking options. Urie’s is exactly what you expect from a seaside seafood restaurant!

Gradisca Ristorante: By Jeanine Zelkas

An Italian Delight

vidence of a former incarnation is written all over the walls of Gradisca, with old framed posters advertising the various jazz and cabaret acts that once performed at the 70‘s nightclub known as Reno Sweeney. Soft jazz music playing in the background, rustic highlights, candlelit tables, low ceilings, and a combination of warm red-painted and brick walls additionally lend themselves to the jazzy ambiance of what is now a fabulous refined Italian restaurant. Entering its thirteenth year in business, Gradisca’s menu maintains high standards for quality cuisine that is largely inspired by the owner’s beloved “Mamma” who regularly handcrafts much of the pasta on-site. You can taste the love in her divine light and flavorful ricotta ravioli as well as in meat-filled tortellini with cream sauce, whose recipe originated in her village in Italy. Opting for the multi-course chef ’s tasting menu from Chef Daniele Boldrini’s newly debuted Summer menu is a great route to take here. Every dish had a unique personality and was creatively prepared and presented as a work of art. A seemingly simple fresh mound of yellowfin tuna tartar was elevated to a blissful height by an accompaniment of sweet caramelized onions with balsamic vinegar and adorned with a little flower. Beef carpaccio was appreciatively served at room temperature, enabling its flavor to fully shine, while additions of a lovely batter-fried butterflied artichoke, black truffle cream sauce, and a sprinkling of sea salt further enhanced the enjoyment of the Wagyu beef. The warm

oozing Tomino cow’s milk cheese felt like a hug and was splendidly balanced by a crisp raddichio and green apple slaw. A complex ravioli dish was a heavenly concoction of lemon-infused buffalo ricotta encased within folded sheets of delicate pasta, served with toasted whole almonds, shrimp, and little cubes of succulent eggplant. We also loved the tasty ragu of free-range goose meat that topped a pile of al dente spinach tagliatelli. Our seared veal tenderloin was tender and delicious served with a nice parmesan cheese sauce, warm peach wedges, string beans, and scattered with threads of sweet crunchy bacon crisps. Desserts were equally unique and delicious with such standouts as a beautifully displayed mouthwatering semifreddo of light loose hazelnut custard and an intensely flavorful strawberry gelati with a bruleed blanket of marshmallow. Aside form the food, Gradisca’s other dolce vita assets include an extensive Italian-leaning wine list, specialty cocktails, a private room, a beautiful bar, outside seating on tree-lined West 13th Street, and the charming and ridiculously handsome manager, Pietro. • Gradisca Ristorante 126 West 13th Street 212-691-4886 gradiscanyc.com

A Hamptons Hotspot By Nalini Leilani

75 Main is a Southampton staple—offering patrons the opportunity to taste simple yet delicious cuisine just minutes from the beach or to bask in a sliver of Southampton nightlife. The location is central: right in the middle of Southampton’s Main Street. The classy yet beachy vibe is perfect for a summer evening after a leisurely day in the Hamptons. We opted to sit outside and were pleased to encounter a comfortable, bustling setting plum for people-watching and absorbing the light summer breeze. At around 5 PM, the restaurant’s evening rush was just trickling in—sunburned Hamptonites made their way in to cap off the evening. We opted for smooth and light glasses of Pinot Grigio: the perfect companions to a summer night and the meal ahead. Some fresh seafood seemed like the best way to start off our dinner. The Lobster Salad and Tuna Tartar whet our appetites and were incredibly refreshing. Both dishes were crafted around the natural flavors of the ingredients. The succulent pieces of lobster stood out and complemented the freshness of the tomato and basil. The same can be said for the 75 Main Caprese Salad: sumptuous slabs of thick-cut mozzarella juxtaposed with a crisp vine tomato and yellow pepper created a colorful yet simple mÊlange boasting with flavor. The SautÊed Pan Mussels added a different note to our selection of appetizers; the warm white wine broth and garlic oil sauce was light yet just creamy enough. Additionally, the Crispy Shishito Peppers had just a hint of Asian influence and unique spice. We opted for a pasta-heavy main course. 75 Main’s pastas were hearty, as to our liking, but again, the ingredients spoke for themselves. The Italian sausage in the Penne Buttera was perfectly cooked and agreed wonderfully with the penne and pink cream sauce. The same can be said for the delicate manila clam in a light white wine sauce in the Linguini Vongole. The Veal Milanese was tender and simply divine to sink our teeth into—its breading emitting a light, yet deep aroma that hinted at a number of herbs. As we finished up our dinner, the nightlife scene was about to take off at 75 Main. Open seven days a week for breakfast, brunch and dinner—the restaurant transforms into a lounge with sexy cocktails and a dance scene at night. Some go to 75 Main for the Lindsay Lohan sightings, we enjoyed a full and GSFTI NFBM KVTU NJOVUFT GSPN UIF )BNQUPOT TIPSFMJOF t 75 Main St. Southampton, NY 11968 (631) 283-7575 75main.com

15 Central Park West is one of New York’s most prestigious residential addresses. Since sales began in 2005, 15 Central Park West has made headlines for its record-setting sales. Today, these exclusive condos command an average price of $6,700 per square foot. At the moment, there is a lavish 5-bedroom home on the 35th floor with uninterrupted views of Central Park for sale at $85 million. This trophy apartment, which was originally listed at $95 million, is also available for rent at $125,000 a month. Wealthy buyers can choose from a number of other beautiful apartments in the building including a three-bedroom on the 7th floor with park views at $30 million or a five-bedroom home facing Broadway asking $32 million. Coveted residences at 15 CPW have been purchased by celebrities, sports figures, Wall Street titans and billionaires. They include steel magnate Leroy Schecter, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, actor Denzel Washington, musician Sting and Nascar driver Jeff Gordon. Star Yankee Alex Rodriguez once rented a residence for $30,000 a month and rumor has it that earlier this year he checked out a gorgeous rental overlooking the park. 15 CPW was built in 2008 by developers William and Arthur Zeckendorf and designed by “modern traditionalist” architect Robert A.M Stern who was inspired by the great New York pre-war apartments of the 1920s. Wealthy buyers are attracted to 15 CPW’s exceptional elegance and park frontage. Many of the posh apartments on Central Park come with refined hotel style services. In 2011, Russian composer Igor Krutoy and his wife Olga purchased a 12th-floor condo at the Plaza Hotel for a reported $48 million, which the New York Post identified as the highest price for a New York City condo at the time. Today, a grandiose 6,319 square feet, four-bedroom penthouse encompassing the 19th, 20th, and 21st floors with direct views of Central Park is asking $59 million. About Tamara Tamara Magel’s work is infused by an inspired world-view of “weaving culturesâ€? – reinterpreting heritages and local traditions into an exotic tapestry of design. Her lifestyle brand is one that is “at home in the worldâ€? and reflects a stylish and easy approach to living well. She has a love for using exceptional textiles and materials from around the world – such as organically dyed yarns, knits, macramĂŠ and beads – to bleached woods and natural stone. The interplay of inspired textures, colors, natural materials and clean lines define her distinctive, comfortable style. Tamara has the utmost respect for the environment and tries to utilize the cleanest approach for materials when launching her products. One of Tamara’s long-term goals is to assist in enabling women in developing countries to create better lives for themselves and their communities. Tamara started her own interior design business eleven years ago in Washington, DC. Since then, she has been featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, The New York Times and Lonny magazines, among others. In 2011, she opened a showroom in New York’s Soho, to showcase her furniture, paint and bedding collections and will now be launching in the Hamptons.

his dining room was designed for a modern, yet rustic Hampton’s house on the beach. As the client’s primary residence, I aimed to combine the chic sophistication of year-round living along with natural elements of the surrounding beach and farmland. We began the design process with a dining table made with organic, all-natural materials. From there, we filled the room with a wide array of different textures – from the Jean de Merry spiked fixture

and alabaster bowl on the table, to the linen window treatments and gray Stark Sisal rug. The high gloss walls are painted in a bone color by Benjamin Moore and are set in juxtaposition against the organic feel of the aforementioned design materials. Using the Hamptons’ sunlight and large windows to my advantage, the subtle color scheme and range of materials compliments the tone of the natural blue/green Hampton’s light perfectly. The end result is an elegant yet comfortable and inviting dining space that perfectly combines SPVHI PSHBOJD UFYUVSFT BMPOHTJEF TNPPUI TIJOZ IJHI HMPTT POFT t

By Christopher A. Pape The automotive brand Jaguar is synonymous with refinement, luxury (and it’s bad old days breaking down, but not anymore). Yet rarely are the words power and excitement uttered. That is until now. Recently, I was lucky enough to be given the chance to test-drive the latest offerings from this icon of cars. This storied brand allowed my creative director and me to hit the road and take in its high performing model line-up for a spin. Known as the Jaguar ALIVE Driving Experience, the company invited us to taste the luxury, performance and DBQBCJMJUZ PG UIFJS NPEFMT GSPN UIF BOE SBOHF In this unique two-hour driving demo, we sat alongside worldclass professional racecar drivers who encouraged us to test the cars’ performance and push the vehicles to their limits, while teaching us about safe performance driving, such as accident avoidance, handling, braking and acceleration, in several closed simulated driving experiences. The models included the F-Type, an all-new two-seater convertible sports car that sent chills down my spine as I floored the accelerator. In a blazing red model, I zipped passed cones and almost (yes almost) spun out-of-control, but the superior traction and intelligent dynamics allowed me to stay the course.

My creative director’s favorite was the XJ; both the supercharged and supersport models were offered. Sitting in the supersport allowed him (and any future customer) to zoom passed competition in style and grace. The smile on his face as he got out of the car said it all – he was in love! On display were the XFR, a V8 supercharged sedan and the XXR/XXR-S, their highest performing models with 510hp and 550hp respectively. While we weren’t able to drive them, they looked every bit of amazing and I know for the lucky few (there will only be 25 XXR-5’s available in North America) who are able to snag one they will thoroughly enjoy them. Unfortunately for me, I’m not in a position to purchase a Jaguar. But, for those that are I highly recommend it. Made with quality, care and consideration of the customer, Jaguar has come a long way in quality control, performance and most of all, styling. While there are many choices in the ultra-premium market, there are few brands with the prestige, the know-how and desire to put a smile on your face like Jaguar. •

Big Role in NYC Mayoral Election By Jerry Kremer

hile the Hamptons are 100 miles from New York City when there is a mayoral election, the two communities are literally next door neighbors. The East End has long been a reliable source of campaign cash for federal candidates for several decades. Vice President Joe Biden and presidential candidate Mitt Romney headlined two big events last year behind the high hedges of two exclusive properties. With the 2013 race for mayor of New York City wide open and 10 candidates declared for the office, the Hamptons are a lucrative candidate for campaign dollars. Fundraising results for the current races from the East End are worth looking at.

close campaign against Mayor Bloomberg in 2009, despite being outspent more than 11 to 1. The former Comptroller, who has been working in the municipal finance sector since he left office, was recently endorsed by the powerful United Federation of Teachers.

Leading the field is City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who represents parts of the West Side of Manhattan. According to the most recent Campaign Finance Board numbers, Quinn has raised $58,800 from East End residents since she first came to office in 1999. (The actual number of East Enders who have donated to her and other candidates may be significantly higher because people may be registered to vote at other addresses. The CFB compiles information according to the address where people identify they vote from.) Quinn, who has a summer home on the Jersey Shore, has tapped into a variety of givers including a $2,500 donation from actress Lorraine Bracco, a resident of Bridgehampton.

Former Congressman Anthony Weiner, the latest entry to the race, has raised $23,450 from East Enders for past city elections, according to the CFB. Weiner’s entry all but guarantees a run off scenario and the opportunity to raise more dollars.

Former Comptroller Bill Thompson runs closely behind Speaker Quinn in his fundraising numbers from East End residents with $55,480 since his first run for public office in 2001. Thompson, who opposed the controversial overturning mayoral term limits in 2008, ran a surprisingly

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio finishes in third, having raised $24,565 from East Enders since he first ran for City Council in 2001. Amagansett resident Alec Baldwin is one of de Blasio’s most prominent backers and has helped him fundraise during this current election cycle. De Blasio, who ran a strong campaign in 2009, beat former Public Advocate Mark Green in the run off.

Sal Albanese, a Brooklyn resident with a home in East Hampton, is launching his second bid for mayor. In 1997, the former City Councilman placed a respectable third in the Democratic primary. He has worked for the last 15 years in the private sector and has launched a longshot bid for mayor. Albanese has not cashed in on his local credentials and has raised small amounts of money. John Liu, the current Comptroller, has raised $6,500 from East

End residents but none of it for his current campaign for mayor. On the Republican side, Joe Lhota, a former Deputy Mayor under Rudy Giuliani and former head of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, has raised $17,600 during this election cycle from East Enders. This includes $4,950 from Thomas Von Essen, who served as fire commissioner alongside Lhota during the Giuliani tenure. John Catsimatidis, a well-known grocery store magnate and billionaire, is not a stranger to the fundraising circuit. In years past, he was a prolific Clinton fundraiser and now, as a Republican mayoral hopeful he is self-funding his candidacy and hosting “friend raisers. These parties present a great opportunity for people to hear a candidate talk freely about issues and answer questions in a way that you don’t normally see at other less-intimate campaign stops. Catsimatidis owns a home in East Quogue and has been conducting friend raisers since announcing his candidacy. The fact that the spread between the numbers raised by mayoral candidates is so small, it is an accurate gauge of how close the September primary will be. While no one knows the final order of finish, the saying after September Primary Day may be “as the Hamptons went, so went New York $JUZ w t

PROFILE

DJ Alex Cecil Clawing His Way To The Top H

By Isaiah Negron

ot DJ Alex Cecil is a prime example of taking a leap of faith and following your passions in life. While growing up on the Upper East Side in New York City, he explored his artistic side, taking up the cello in the 2nd grade. “I was talented at it, but it wasn’t the right medium for me, remembers Cecil, who was also very good with numbers and received a perfect score on his math SAT’s. At Georgetown University he majored in finance and minored in art, to challenge and expand his mind. After graduating, he worked for Citibank for five years until one day he decided to do something very different. After playing around with some amateur DJ equipment he bought in Paris he decided to make his first track, Smooth Criminal Mix. “The first track I created made me realize that this was what I wanted to do, said Cecil. “It’s my favorite mix; making it was amazing and I fell in love with DJ’ing. Alex went out and purchased professional DJ equipment, an investment made to determine if he was ready to turn his life upside down. “I may be impulsive, but I can still be practical, jokes Cecil. “I’d come home from work and stay up until 4am DJ’ing by myself. I began to like it even more. Supported by his family and friends, Cecil quit his job at Citibank on June 6th 2012 and within one week he had moved downtown and gotten a tattoo on his bicep,

the wild claw mark he uses as his DJ logo. “I wanted to use something that was original yet animalistic. It fits my personality, Cecil explains. “Most people don’t find a passion. I didn’t think I was going to either until I started to DJ. Diving in headfirst, Cecil scored his first DJ gig last September at NYC’s Southside Room in Little Italy. Since then he has headlined at some of the city’s edgiest clubs including The Bowery Hotel, Mister H., Yotel, Webster Hall, Rosewood and SkyBar in L.A. This summer, he will spin at the new Sienna Restaurant & Ultralounge and Pink Elephant in East Hampton. “I’m barely a year in and I’m headlining BU QMBDFT XIFSF PUIFS %+ T IBWF CFFO QMBZJOH GPS ZFBST *U T B SVTI every time, says Cecil. From new disco to house music, Cecil’s eclectic mixes have continued to entice all types people to dance and fist pump the night away. One of his goals is to play, concert style, for thousands of people who will be partying to his mixes. Confident and determined to succeed Cecil says, “I want to be huge. And whether you hate me or love me, it doesn’t matter. When I DJ, you’re going to have fun. t Siennahamptons.com DJalexcecil.com

Financier Re-envisions Trump Property In Puerto Rico

E

ntrepreneur and finance wunderkind Fahad Ghaffar is reaching new heights by creating an empire of private yet affordable luxury properties. After graduating from the University of Virginia in 2005 with a degree in finance, Ghaffar took a job in investment banking. As he built solid relationships with important players in the financial world he also learned the ins and outs of the real estate market. He discovered a new niche market and started buying neglected off-market properties directly from banks, lenders and private equity investors and transformed them into thriving residential complexes. “It made financial sense, said Ghaffar. “We can create a quality product while simultaneously protecting buyers from volatile markets.

learned about all of its sides, especially the legal ones, said Ghaffar.

In 2010, he founded his own financial firm WhiteFire Capital in New York City. Over the last three years the company has purchased and revitalized numerous failed properties including 79 condos in Tennessee, furnishing them and adding new landscaping and swimming pools before selling them. Ghaffar was able to double the return on his initial investment in 9 months. He also bought 17 vacation cabins in Tennessee from Wells Fargo, reenvisioned them and then sold them all in 30 days making over a one million dollar profit. His experience in the legal and financial fields gave him time to learn how to interpret legal documents and understand the rights and protections buyers have as he read and studied mountains of legal papers. “With seven years of lending experience and extensive hands-on practice as UBS, I quickly

The vision Ghaffar has for WhiteFire goes far beyond his highly valued relationship with Trump. With a string of successful development deals on his books, Ghaffar is planning to expand into new territory. “I’d love to do a hip hotel project and make it a hot new destination for young professionals he says. With his extensive real estate experience, unwavering drive to succeed and high standards, Ghaffar always says what he means. “As Warren Buffet said, ‘Never do a deal you can’t close with a handshake, Fahad says, “I’ll always strive to do good business with good QFPQMF w t

Ghaffar’s latest venture teams him up with Donald Trump to remaster a luxury condo building in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His first project off the mainland, the 1,000-acre property will feature 49 luxury beachfront condos complete with fully furnished living spaces, tennis courts, swimming pools and a PGA golf course membership. “I decided to get creative, says Ghaffar. “We met with Trump and he approved all of my ideas. Donald’s a great guy to do business with. Renovations in San Juan are nearing completion and WhiteFire is gearing up to show buyers the spacious, state of the art units that are priced to sell before the Holidays.

Jessica Lichtenstein’s

Peep Show By Joe Alexander

L

ooking at the art of Jessica Lichtenstein, one is transported into an imaginary world of childlike hedonism. The colors bombard you with a familiar sense of happiness, the thick acrylic glimmers back at you like a diamond on display, and the girls well…they smile at you, seducing you from behind an optical lens as you voyeuristically “peep” into their candy colored landscapes. But as always, there is more behind that lens than meets the eye. Lichtenstein began her journey as an artist at Yale University where she studied art, art history and English literature. Often compared to the contemporary artists Jeff Koons and Murakami, Lichtenstein says she draws her inspiration from the classic masters. Her current series of work entitled “word sculptures” examines the pornographic world of Japanese-inspired comic books. Creating her own imagined fantastical landscapes infused with a highly sexualized environment, Lichtenstein places these appropriated heroines into scenes that are reminiscent of Renoir’s, Cezanne’s or Picasso’s “nude bathers”; scenes that harken back to a time of “female as muse”. Last month Vered Gallery in East Hampton opened their summer season with a solo show of Lichtenstein’s work aptly called “PEEP SHOW”. It’s namesake, a piece entitled PEEP is a voyeuristic tourde-force. Languidly swimming underwater, the girls in the piece are encapsulated in a graphic aquarium or fish tank. As the viewer walks around this piece, they literally need to peep their heads around barriers of plexiglass that obscure some of these girls from their full

obvious exposure. And as you move your head left and right, up and down, trying to see all that is tantalizingly hidden from you, you become aware of the girls in the piece coyly smiling back at you, defiantly and confidently, cognizant of their rolls as trophies or treasures that are put on display. Of the show, Lichtenstein said, “I wanted to draw attention to the way that we gaze at the naked female body, and equate it to the way we view other beautiful objects surrounding us. So the girls in PEEP blend into the colorful coral in the background, the girls in another piece called BLISS are blended into, and almost become indistinguishable from, the colorful flowers that they are blossoming from. So even though these girls are appropriated from a more pornographic world, putting them in this context may cause the viewer to confront their own potentially discordant reactions to these hypersexualized images.” -JDIUFOTUFJO T XPSL XJMM CF PO EJTQMBZ UIJT TVNNFS BU HBMMFSZ OJOF in New York City, Vered Gallery in East Hampton and in a group show at Galerie Maximillian in Aspen called “Words: Language in Contemporary Art,” featuring other artists such as Richard Prince and Ed Ruscha. Last Word: The Bugged House That I Live In I don’t want public attention because I don’t want the story to be about me. I want it to be about what the US government is doing.

(How Edward Snowden and David Bowie answered ‘What is America to me?’) By David Shipley

his past Fourth of July, I thought of Edward Snowden. Not because of his revelation that the NSA was monitoring our communication, that’s like revealing Michael Bloomberg doesn’t shop in the big and tall section. No, I think of him because of the David Bowie song “Fame.â€? You know, “Fame, what you like is in the limo‌.â€? Sing along with me, kids. I have no intention of tackling the legality or morality of Edward Snowden’s actions. Pre-law was even way too much for me. And morals, I’ll take the Fifth‌ of bourbon. Forgive my rim shot. However, the “whistle blowerâ€? has been with us as long as the righteous indignation by those whose whistle has been blown. The framers of the Constitution in “The Federalist Papersâ€? debated what government should or shouldn’t tell its citizenry. And they knew things, as my bubbe would say. They were wealthy white men who wore wigs and owned slaves. My bubbe didn’t say that part. If they couldn’t come to an agreement, who could? What’s my point? It’s that David Bowie’s “Fameâ€? is now our national anthem. Fame for the sake of fame. Fame at any cost. Fame, I want to live forever. Wait, I have to live in jail for that? Enter Edward Snowden. I can’t know his intention, nor would I presume to, but the sad fact is that he might not either. Why do I posit this? He is a product of our culture. And not possessing Kim Kardashian’s ample posterior and strong character in dealing with psoriasis, leaking classified information is the most expedient route to the news cycle. “I don’t want public attention because I don’t want the story to be about me. I want it to be about what the US government is doing,â€? said Edward Snowden. Seems like a perfect sound bite. I even quoted it. And his journeying to Hong Kong, fretting that the Chinese

t Resident August 2013

government may take him away for questioning because of his information, his leaving on the midnight flight to not Georgia but Russia for some South American location to be named later‌ very le Carre, it really isn’t about drawing attention to himself or is it? I’m old enough to remember Daniel Ellsberg and “The Pentagon Papersâ€?. Those under thirty, Google it. (Don’t worry. Google already assured us the NSA doesn’t get information directly from their servers.) A great deal of circumspection went into that action. Ellsberg worked on leaking them for a full year. He first tried circulating them to trusted Senators. I just don’t get that with Edward Snowden. Yes, he says all the right things. There it is! It’s the part usually played by George Clooney if he didn’t have a scheduling conflict. But this isn’t a part. And the consequences of his actions will be there long after the news cycle has moved on. Does he know that anymore than Jared Loughner, the part usually played by Heath Ledger, if he weren’t dead? Nathan Hale, one of the previously mentioned white men who wore wigs, was hanged for his convictions. He knew that might be his fate. In our every one’s in a YouTube movie posted to Facebook zeitgeist, reality seldom makes even a cameo, not even in reality shows. Even though I am white guy but I don’t wear a wig, I do know some things. A person must be aware of the personal consequences of their actions. And if a person’s actions lead to a positive change and he or she doesn’t understand those consequences, I’d prefer no whistle to be blown. To advocate the contrary, if I may quote from our national anthem, i'BNF XIBU ZPV HFU JT OP UPNPSSPX w t To contact David Shipley, send an email to: oped@nytimes.com
