EDITOR’S NOTE

SPRING IS IN FULL BLOOM With the world beginning to open and restrictions being lifted, there is a renewed optimism in the air as we view the world with a different post pandemic lens. Our cover story this month is the talented thespian turned showrunner, Kathleen Robertson who showcases her talent behind the camera as much as in front of the camera. Kathleen made her stateside debut in the 90s starring in Beverly Hills, 90210, which pretty much defined the era. Her secret in captivating the audience lies in her instinctual storytelling and her ability to bring out the human side of her character, whether it’s good or evil. Taking that ability of bringing characters to life, her latest show, Swimming with Sharks, is a binge worthy series that just premiered on the

Roku Channel. Though it shares the same title as the 90s dark comedy movie with Kevin Spacey, this series reads more of a thriller between two female protagonists with plenty of twists and turns to keep the viewer at the edge of their seats.

JONA GENOVA, THE STAR HOLISTIC PERFORMANCE COACH TO ELITE PERFORMERS By Lillian Langtry Meet Jona Genova, a star in the NFL universe and a go-to performance coach in the NFL with coaches and players who is achieving incredible results with her new and unconventional approach; one that embraces compassion, the complexities of being human, and our natural need for connection. Jona refers to herself as a Holistic Performance Coach, and NFL teams were eager to learn about her technique methods at this year’s “The Combine.” Jona has been on speed dial with NFL players and coaches (including head coaches and athletes with multiple Super Bowl rings) for the past four years. She is assisting them in achieving flow by increasing emotional awareness, connection to inner wisdom, and a healthy sense of self outside of their profession. It stands in stark contrast to the field’s traditional male emphasis on control, hyper-individualism, and focus. Jona believes that exceptional focus, discipline, and resilience are required for people to reach the pinnacle of their profession. They are so far ahead of the majority of other humans that they don’t need another 5 Pillars of this or that. Rather, they require healing of the limiting beliefs that are impeding the flow of their brilliance. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, and it takes the form of tiny micro adjustments that most people wouldn’t notice, but that’s where Jona’s acute sensitivity and perceptivity deliver big results on and off the field. At the center of Jona’s approach are her intuition, a strategic mind and more than 25 years practicing Tibetan Buddhism.

14 | resident.com

She believes that the outer world affects the inner world and vice versa. Jona is a beautiful woman, inside and out, who triumphed in the world of finance and hospitality, before finding her true calling by helping others achieve their goals. She is relatable, charismatic and her policy of strict confidentiality immediately puts clients at ease. Jona’s journey has been remarkable and fascinating, and it qualifies as an American success story. She graduated from high school a year early and assisted with brain research at Clarkson University. She went on to study with top neuroscientists at Boston College, where she met the professor/Tibetan Lama who set her on her initial spiritual path. She caught the heady days of Wall Street in the early 2000s, but she was also secretly running a cookie business in the Hamptons on weekends to feed her creative side. This led to her working with some of the biggest names in the nightlife industry. From 2003 to 2007, she was a fixture on the New York City nightlife scene, working at Marquee, Ruby Falls, and Lot 61. After relocating to Los Angeles, her Lama granted her permission to teach Tibetan Buddhist meditation practices. Jona is currently working on next level performance techniques, which already have a long waitlist. She has also spoken at professional conferences about the importance of treating individuals while taking systemic and institutional oppression into account, and she is a soughtafter keynote speaker. Jona has been featured on Good Morning America, The Los Angeles Times, MSN, and Women’s Health Magazine, as well as in the book Unplug: A Simple Guide to Meditation for Busy Skeptics and Modern Soul Seekers.

THE TALENTED MS. KATHLEEN ROBERTSON SHOWCASES HER TALENT BEHIND THE CAMERA WITH THE ROKU CHANNEL’S SWIMMING WITH SHARKS By Hillary Latos Photos By Tony Duran Though Kathleen Robertson may be best known for her role as Claire Arnold on the 90s hit series, Beverly Hills, 90210, that was just the beginning of an illustrious career in Hollywood. Taking on more complex and challenging roles, Robertson’s interests and projects have proven that she is just as talented behind the camera as she is in front of the camera. In the 2010s she switched from acting to screenwriting, and recently premiered her binge worthy hit thriller series, Swimming with Sharks, starring Diane Kruger on the Roku Channel. Here Resident speaks to Robertson about her experiences in Hollywood, career trajectory and myriad of interest that brought her to where she is today. How did starring in Beverly Hills, 90210 shape your career? KR: It was really the beginning of everything and changed the trajectory of my career. I was very new to the US, and I moved to Los Angeles when I was 19. I was an actor in Canada since I was 10 and this was my first American job. In the 90s, this was the biggest show in the world at the time. Have you kept in touch with your castmates? KR: Tori Spelling and I still occasionally will text or message over social media, and I love her. She was my closest friend on the show, and we did Scary Movie together also. How do you think the industry has changed and evolved from the time you started acting? KR: I think for women, it’s actually gotten better. A lot of the recent developments in the past few years in terms of Me Too has brought attention to the high level executives in the industry who have been called out for bad behavior. I think things

30 | resident.com

are better now than they’ve ever been and finally we’re starting to see more diverse actors getting opportunities, both in front and behind the camera. We’re moving in the right direction. Tell me about your new series, Swimming with Sharks. KR: This is a psychological thriller that centers around two women. Diane Kruger plays Joyce Holt, and Kiernan Shipka plays Lou Simms. It’s an unconventional, twisted love story between these two women. The very first episode we meet Lou Simms arriving at her job. She’s an intern for this notorious nightmare of a woman who is a female and one of the only token female executives working for this massive studio. Her boss is played by Donald Sutherland, who is a monster beyond monsters. You think the show is going to be one thing and then you realize at the end of the first episode that this girl who is seemingly very innocent, has secrets in her past and she’s there for different reasons than it appears. It’s a fun, crazy sexy ride. It’s something that people seem binge on and it moves fast dropping you into a world that maybe you’ve never been dropped into before. I’m excited for people to finally see it. How does this differ from the original movie, Swimming with Sharks with Kevin Spacey? KR: It’s nothing like that one. The tone is completely different. That one was more of a comedy. This is a psychological thriller, and other than this title there are no similarities. I just used the title as a jumping off point. These mentor/ mentee relationships in Hollywood is the background. Are there any real life people that these are composites are based on?

KR: I’ve been in the industry for many years, and there are a lot of things that are drawn from my experiences that I’ve either lived through or heard about. How do you like being behind the camera vs in front of the camera? KR: I’m the showrunner on the project and I created it. I love it. Because I’ve been an actor my whole life, acting is very effortless, and its second nature. I can drop onto a film set and work as an actor, and it just feels so natural for me. But this is all new for me. It’s a very different skill set that uses a different part of my brain and I genuinely love being a showrunner. It’s an incredible amount of work and obviously exhausting, and all encompassing. This is something I definitely plan on continuing to do more of, but I also love being an actor. Who has been a mentor to you? KR: There was an acting teacher that I worked with in Los Angeles, named Larry Moss. He was also a person for me that also opened my exposure to a lot of really famous playwrights and literature. The experience of being coached and working with him changed the trajectory of my career and made me focus less on being an actor for hire, and more about being coming a storyteller, which is how I ended up where I am now. Have there been any roles that you played which mirrored your personality? KR: It’s hard for me to be objective when I play a role. I try to forget about me and leave my opinions and feelings at the door. No matter what role I play, I like to relate to that person, even if it’s a serial killer, which I have played. I try to find the humanity in a person no matter what choices they make, even if they do extreme things and make bad choices. I approach these roles from a

resident.com | 31

COVER | RESIDENT

32 | resident.com

place of trying to understand why people make certain choices and do the things that they do. It’s a full circle, you have to understand the humanity and the journey that somebody’s been on before you can sidestep them.

about these characters and it’s a hybrid of sci fi and true drama, which I think is what makes it so popular.

If you could have any dream role, what would it be?

KR: I’m wearing multiple hats with many different projects right now. I’m writing a movie for Paramount right now, and it’s my first time writing a big studio movie which has been really challenging and rewarding all at once. I also just sold a show that I am creating and starring in. I have a project that I’m doing with documentary filmmaker named Joe Berlinger, who did The Ted Bundy Tapes, and we’re working on a scripted project together for Lionsgate that I’m also showrunning.

I love to spend time in a library in Hollywood that was built in the 1920s where I go to write. On Melrose, I like Osteria Mozza. My favorite sushi place in LA is Shintaro in a strip mall on Franklin and Highland. I also love the Hollywood Farmers Market, and my old school favorite place to go is Musso and Frank’s. where I love to grab a martini at the bar. I love Mr. Chows in Beverly Hills for Chinese food.. It brings when I first moved to LA and used to go all the time.

What books are you reading that have inspired you?

What else do you like to do for fun when you’re not working?

KR: Right now I’m reading Atomic Habits and also Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty. I like books that help me learn to relax, slow down and be a little bit more mindful and in the moment, where I’m not working so hard, which is my focus right now.

KR:. Anytime that I’m not working I’m always with my kids. I have a five year old who loves the outdoors and loves to go canoeing and hiking. At home we build train sets. I have another son who is 13 and he loves going thrift shopping and buying vintage clothes, which is so funny, because he’s literally following my footsteps when I was that age. We like go thrifting together and he’s a foodie. We’ll go and have nice dinners together just the two of us to connect and have that time.

KR: I think a dream role for an actor is a role that touches on a lot of different facets of that person. One of my pet peeves for so long was about the roles written for women that were simply the girlfriend, the supportive wife, or the arm candy, and now we’re moving into a direction, thankfully, where women are allowed to be more complex. A woman can be strong and tough and also really competent, but she can also have vulnerabilities and things that make her specific to being female. Men and women are very different and that’s not a bad thing, that’s reality. The things that I like to write and the stuff that I gravitate towards are those kinds of complex roles that may appear as one thing to the outside world, but when you go home and you’re not wearing makeup, all of us are a very different version of the person that same person. I just love seeing the sort of the complexities of who we all are and the choices we all make. How did you like starring in the Sci Fi series, The Expanse? KR: The Expanse was really my first time ever doing anything in the Sci Fi genre, and I really loved it. I was intrigued by the dialect and the world that they’ve created with the costumes and the tattoos and it was really fun. The show is really more

What other projects do you have in the works?

Do you have any fun summer travel plans? KR: I have two boys and I’m married, and we have we have a place up in Northern Ontario on Georgian Bay. We’re going to get our boat out mid May when the Marina opens. We will plan to spend some time at our place up North this summer. My boys love it there. I’m

Canadian but my boys were born in Los Angeles and have dual passports. They love Canada and love to spend time around their cousins. What are some of your local hangouts in LA?

We haven’t really done any traveling because of COVID, so I’m definitely looking forward to some of that in the future now that we’re slowly coming out of all this.

EXPERIENCE 18TH CENTURY ROYAL LIFE AT AIRELLES CHÂTEAU DE VERSAILLES, LE GRAND CONTRÔLE By MOSAKA WILLIAMSON

There is history in the walls of Airelles Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle hotel that sits on the grounds of Versailles. The palace is one of the most opulent and grand places in the world which took around 40 years to complete and was built to impress. This hotel was constructed in 1681 and was initially intended for the Duke of Beauvilliers, Colbert’s son-in-law. It was designed by Louis XIV’s favorite architect, Jules Hardouin-Mansart, a 17th-century

36 | resident.com

benchmark in French classicism. Le Grand Contrôle became the ministry of finance, hosting powerful figures who traveled to meet Louis XVI’s ministers. Today the space is home to a palatial hotel adorned with authentic royal artifacts, priceless works of art, and a detailed aesthetic that stays true to 18thcentury decor with original pieces of furniture from the period. Additionally, you will find superior service provided

by the staff, stunning views of the Palace of Versailles, exclusive access to the grounds, and experiences for hotel guests, and Airelles Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle delivers a first-rate culinary feast curated by Chef Alain Ducasse at the hotel restaurant. A stay at this hotel is a truly unique and exclusive luxury experience that will surely create lifelong memories.

Versailles, located around 10 miles southwest of Paris, is in a town that was little more than a hamlet before becoming the pride of royal power. Louis XIV developed a genuine liking for Versailles early on and decided to extend it beyond the chateau that had grown out of a hunting lodge of brick and stone first built by his father. The king had a grand vision for the palace and took on the role of the architect.

The residence gradually went from being a hunting lodge to a residence for leisure that saw grand parties and entertainment held in the gardens. Several celebrations took place at the palace; from 7 to 13 May 1664, Louis XIV held a party in honor of his mother Anne of Austria and Queen Maria-Theresa. The celebrations continued with horse races, lotteries, visits to the Menagerie, and theatrical

performances. Molière’s famous work Tartuffe was performed for the first time on the evening of 12 May. From 1682 it became the main residence of the French Court and government.

Born in Versailles like his grandfather, Louis XVI became king of France before the age of twenty. His marriage to the Archduchess of Austria Marie-Antoinette in 1770 at the Royal Opera House was one of the greatest events to take place in Versailles in the late 18th century. Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette spent most of their time in Versailles, where they continued working to make the vision of Louis XIV come to fruition. Versailles underwent major work both inside and

38 | resident.com

outside, including full refurbishment of apartments, and the completion of the construction of the large theatre the Royal Opera House. Many spectacular events took place on the grounds of Versailles; It was at Versailles that Mozart performed as a child prodigy. Marie-Antoinette loved luxury! “It’s said that as queen, Marie habitually slept until noon and threw parties that lasted all night. She spent

money like it was going out of style, sparing no expense on rich food, wine, clothes, wigs, and hats.” During this time France was experiencing hardships. The country was burdened with massive debts, commoners were taxed heavily while the wealthy elite paid no taxes. This created resentment and Royalty were forced to escape the palace down the very halls of what is now Airelles Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle hotel.

During the 18th century, Le Grand Contrôle became the ministry of finance. Within those walls, the building blocks of American independence were laid out in private thanks to the financial support of the King of France. The European cultural elite roamed the halls of the hotel with the noble characters of the Age of Enlightenment. In the 1700s, Le Grand Contrôle held significant political, economic and cultural influence.

The buildings of the hotel were left abandoned for a number of decades, and due to entrusted and talented craftspeople, they were brought back to their former glory, all the while adapting them to 21st-century expectations of luxury and comfort. A dedicated scientific committee of experts was set up to ensure that the restoration was both faithful to Louis XVI and respectful of the priceless historical heritage that Le Grand Contrôle represents. The attention to detail in terms of accuracy is remarkable. The paintings, furniture, and even the staff ’s 18th century-inspired outfits offer a true representation of the period.

In addition to the ambiance and history found at Airelles Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle, what makes this hotel truly exceptional is the professional and knowledgable staff led by General Manager Julien Révah-they go above and beyond to ensure that every stay is perfect and to the guests’ liking. Each guest of the hotel enjoys exclusive benefits and privileged access to Château de Versailles and its grounds. You can make your stay even more memorable by: • E xploring a different part of the Palace ‘after hours’ every evening with a complimentary exclusive tour. Along with access to the main areas of the Palace of Versailles, your guide will also reveal previously unseen spaces. • A s part of your stay, you can also enjoy a complimentary exclusive tour of the Domaine de Trianon every morning, as your guide uncovers a new room and garden every time. • Enjoy a picnic on the grounds. • G uests will also receive unlimited complimentary access to electric golf carts to take in the massive place grounds, with an exclusive entrance, and electric boats. • P rivate yoga and fitness classes are available on request whilst full access to the Valmont Spa allows for royal relaxation. • Bespoke experiences upon request. Additionally, every guest is assigned a dedicated butler, with no request too big or small. To keep guests fuelled for adventure, breakfast – created by Alain Ducasse – is included in the stay, along with a complimentary minibar and daily Afternoon Tea. Created in conjunction with the prestigious Swiss brand Valmont, the spa is one of the highlights of staying at the hotel and worthy of being on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles. Valmont offers a signature ritual in homage to Marie-Antoinette’s legendary beauty. ‘Majestic Mirror’ is a treatment that rejuvenates both your face and décolleté. Or you could be tempted by the Sun King Massage, designed with Maison Caulières, for an unequaled sense of wellbeing. The gym has a mixture of cardio and weights machines overlooking the Lake of the Swiss Guards, with a personal trainer available by reservation.

The most stunning aspect of the hotel is the decor. Every room is crafted with intricate detail, original art, and transports you to the days of MarieAntoinette with the level of luxury she would have come to expect. There are many uniquely themed rooms like “The Madame de Fouquet Room”, inspired by the extraordinary life of the celebrated socialite who married the Marquis de Fouquet. He was a hero of the American Revolutionary War and they lived together at Le Grand Contrôle until 1787. The room is meticulously adorned with delicate woodwork and period Versailles parquet floors, 18thcentury cornices, and original bas reliefs that have been lovingly restored. This Room has impressively high ceilings, a 60m² layout, two bathrooms, a spacious 30m² terrace that offers sprawling views of the gardens, canopy bed, and period fireplace. The restaurant by Alain Ducasse adds to its exceptionalism. The dining philosophy at Le Grand Contrôle is “a journey through time and experiencing gastronomic pleasures from the past to the present. A day at Le Grand Contrôle is more like a several-act play punctuated by delicious breaks – much like it was during the reign of Louis XIV.” Enjoy life and as the French say “Mangez bien, riez souvent, aimez beaucoup!”

THE ICONIC BENJAMIN HOTEL THIRD GENERATION HOTELIER CHRISSIE DENIHAN DISCUSSES NYC’S HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY IN A POST PANDEMIC PHASE By Hillary Latos New Yorkers have always been known for their resiliency. Sinatra crooned, “If you can make it here you can make it anywhere,” which pretty much sums it up for third generation hotelier Chrissy Denihan, Managing Director of Denihan Hospitality, whose family has been in the hospitality business for over 50 years. Since the 50s their patriarch began with a single building in Manhattan which eventually grew to become a portfolio of luxury boutique hotels. They have witnessed the ebbs and flows and explosive growth of NYC hospitality and their hotels have been an integral part of the storied history of NYC. As the last two years have dramatically affected the city, it’s slowly making its way back. Here Resident speaks with Ms. Denihan on what the hospitality scene is like in a post pandemic world and what they have planned for their most iconic property, The Benjamin Hotel. How and when did you get into the hospitality business? How have you seen it change over the decades and how is it now? A: High level, I’m third generation and we actually started as a dry-cleaning business back in the early 1900s. In the 1950s, my grandfather started acquiring different buildings around New York City. They were apartment style hotels, so the families ran these hotels. They were much larger room sizes and centered around longer stays. Then, under the current leadership, it has evolved into more boutique hotels around New York with deep history. It’s been a very interesting history for our family.

54 | resident.com

Q: Since the pandemic, have you guys pivoted or changed your programming? A: Yes, we had to pivot but we were very lucky to be able to keep the hotels open. We only closed for a very short time whereas a lot of hotels in the city were closed for some time. We were able to come up with different types of programming, for example we launched a Dream Room which was a virtual feelgood experience at our Fifty Hotel. So, we really flexed into these more individualized, unique experiences. Of course, at The Benjamin, we had more of an opportunity to talk about our sleep program over this time period because people were looking for other ways to relax and unwind. We sustained and, hopefully, we’re almost at the other side. Q: What are some of the things that The Benjamin offers that gives you an advantage? What creates your loyal following? A: Our team at The Benjamin is fantastic, hospitality is such a service-based industry, so having top tier service gives us that advantage. When we launched back in 1999, we were the first hotel with a sleep program and the first hotel to introduce a pillow menu. Back then, we had a sleep concierge. Today, we have an entire sleep program, backed by Dr. Rebecca Robbins, an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School. I think we’ve really set ourselves apart with the unique programs that we have. When you come to a hotel, of course people visit us for all different types of reasons, but they always want to have a great night’s sleep. So, we make sure

we have a science-based approach so that somebody can really get the best night’s sleep. The program includes a pillow menu, 24/7 on-call sleep team, on demand meditation and many other things to give guests a luxurious sleep experience. Q: What are some of the elements that you’ve incorporated that you’ve found in your favorite hotels? A: I was recently at the Hotel Escondida in Mexico, which is a fantastic boutique hotel in Quintana Roo. It’s just these little touch points in service, whether it’s the collateral on the desk or, you know, the warm welcome, high touch communication with guests. Our team has gone above and beyond in delivering experience and I think that’s one of the most important things at our hotels and is something I look for at other properties. Q: What are your favorite spots in New York City? A: I’m a New Yorker so I have a very long list! As far as travelers go, Central Park can’t be beat. If a tourist has time, I highly recommend they see the top sights but also going through the North Woods seeing the waterfalls is just such a tranquil experience. But if they don’t have much time, then I would recommend doing the horse and carriage ride. We actually have a partnership at The Benjamin to provide that for guests. Of course, the MET and Natural History Museum but I really love the Frick Museum, it’s one of my favorites. There’s just so much that this city offers, the restaurant scene is alive and bustling and it really has been

for the last year. Avra restaurant on 48th off 3rd is really cozy and quaint and has a great outdoor area. That’s a fun spot to go for a glass of wine and an appetizer after walking around Midtown and seeing all the sights. KRB is a sweet boutique I like to visit. They feature artwork by Lia Burke, who designed The Benjamin Hotel Masks. Blue Tree is an Upper East Side gift shop that is run by the legendary Phoebe Cates. She and her team have such an authentic eye and the store’s offerings are always so unexpected and fun. As for shopping, you must do Bergdorf ’s and then cruise around Soho and the West Village and then fall into a delicious meal at Altro Paradiso. In terms of other restaurants, Chef Daniels has a new spot called Le Pavillon. I recommend dining and then capturing the skyline at SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, it truly is a one-of-a-kind experience. I love Momofuku Noodle Bar, and it’s not impossible to get a table. It’s a nice walk from the hotel and you can’t miss the spicy cucumbers. For those traveling with kids, there

are babysitting options at the recently opened Columbus Circle CAMP location. Broadway is back and fully in swing. Jagged Little Pill can’t be missed. As a New York City born and bred 90’s girl, Alanis Morissette was always a go to. It’s a fresh take on her music and truly left me feeling invigorated. Q: Who are your core travelers? How would you describe them? A: I would say before the pandemic we had a lot of business travelers. During the week business was robust and it still is but, since then, we’ve seen during the pandemic that it’s shifted to more leisure or people who are working and staying, so our length of stay has increased about a day and a half on property. People are really coming to experience the city and maybe staying a little longer to work, either at our hotel or at places nearby. We have a lot of businesspeople, a lot of families, and sports teams. We’ve seen international travel start to pick up which is great. We welcome people to join us!

A: I think it’s really about treating both our guests and employees like they’re family. Making sure to have a clear framework of what the expectations are and also rewarding hard work and dedication. This is an industry that I love, and you have to have a passion for it because it can be challenging, especially during the pandemic. I think it’s really all about the people and if you get the right people then you can provide the right type of experience. Q: Any new projects? A: Right now, we’re working on putting together a fun Kids Club. When people come to the city with their family, it’s fun to have a family staycation but we also want to make sure that there is programming for the kids. We just rolled out this Valentine’s Day package where they can stay in one of our suites, have a carriage ride through the park and have a private skate at Wollman rink. There’s really something for everyone at the hotel. Thebenjamin.com

Q: What would you contribute to the success of your family? What are the secrets of your success?

THE MACALLAN UNVEILS DISTIL YOUR WORLD NEW YORK By Hillary Latos A collaboration with Michelin-starred chefs, The Roca Brothers capturing the essence of one of the world’s most creative and dynamic cities brought to life in a new documentary New York — The Macallan has launched Distil Your World New York, an exceptional limited edition single malt whisky that captures the essence of one of the most iconic cities in the world.

60 | resident.com

Distil Your World New York marks the latest release in the series of single malt whiskies and gastronomic creations exploring leading locations around the globe. Crafted by The Macallan Whisky Maker Polly Logan in collaboration with the Roca brothers, owners of El Celler de Can Roca, twice named Best Restaurant in the World, Distil Your World New York embodies and celebrates the city as a dynamic metropolis of art, creativity and visionary talent.

To uncover the mastery behind New York, Polly and Joan Roca traveled to the city to spend time with the artists who fuel its vibrant culture; the visionaries driving its inimitable creativity; and the thinkers chronicling the city. Their journey and the remarkable figures they encountered during it, including globally acclaimed jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, legendary graffiti artist Lady Pink, art curator at the Guggenheim Museum Megan Fontanella, high-end fashion designer

Daniel Silverstein and sneaker culture historian Dee Wells, will be showcased in a new 30-minute documentary which marks the fourth episode of the Distil Your World documentary series. The film premiered during a private event in New York on April 13th before being released on YouTube for viewing. Created from the perfect combination of six European and American oak casks, the whisky reflects the distinctive artistic character of the city, its towering architecture, and the culinary eclecticism offered by its delis, diners and street food. The Macallan Whisky Maker Polly Logan said: “This project is a homage to the people of New York. The daring, creative and diverse characters we’ve met along the way. This whisky is bold, flavor vibrant and uplifting – just like each of them.” Building on the subtle apple notes already characteristic of The Macallan – a fitting flavor for the Big Apple – Distil Your World New York also offers the sweetness of classic American candy, with nods to peanut and chocolate. A whisp of sidewalks portrays the bustle of the city while uplifting citrus represents the skyscrapers that dominate New York’s skyline. “We really looked towards the quintessential tastes of New York – sweet candy, waffles, peanut brittle, chocolate, and pecans. The city’s thriving street food scene was a great source of inspiration” said The Macallan Whisky Maker Polly Logan.

The globally acclaimed Roca brothers also created a unique menu designed to take diners on a singular journey through New York. Their creations, which like the whisky, play with renowned New York flavors including a potato cronut with salsa brava, waffles with chicken pâté and sugar cane syrup and cured and smoked strip steak. The Big Apple, their masterpiece dessert, features a caramel apple filled with fresh apple puree and milk chocolate. Joan Roca said: “The originality of New York is endless, it’s impossible to portray

it with just one creation, so we needed to express it through an extended menu, where every dish tells a story. The city grabs hold of you instantly. Its energy pushed us to create a complex and daring menu, with ideas that we explored for the very first time.” Distil Your World New York is housed in a striking white presentation box featuring an engraved aerial map of New York. Bold touches of blue on the box and bottle represent the water that surrounds the city and the buildings which reach into the sky. In addition

to the limited edition whisky, the box contains a luxurious book showcasing the different inspirations behind this single malt, and the craftsmanship involved in its creation, alongside rich New York photography. The Macallan Distil Your World New York is a limited-edition release of 1,000 bottles and will be available starting April 2022 for an SRP of $4,200 for the 70cl bottle and $4,500 for the 75cl version at select The Macallan Boutiques around the world, in premium specialist retailers and in exclusive premium non-specialist retailers.

SOBEWFF RETURNS TO MIAMI

By Josh Estrin and Michael Travin

Though the tents have been taken down and replaced by umbrellas and beach chairs filled with excited spring breakers and families escaping the deep freeze of the North, the South Beach Wine and Food Festival (SOBEWFF) has again left its indelible footprint on Miami Beach and the foodie scene. Here are some highlights as well as insights from top restaurateurs Tony and Cathy Mantuano. In a discussion with James Beard Award winner and Michelin rated Chef Tony Mantuano and wine and hospitality expert Cathy Mantuano, partners at Yolan in The Joseph, a Luxury Collection Hotel in Nashville, I was offered a window into the exciting new future of Italian gastronomy through the eyes and palates of this couple who are the masterminds behind the design, direction, and menus that embody the spirit of elevated southern hospitality. Make no mistake, with some of the best Italian cuisine in the city, Yolan is anything but predictable. Add to that Denim, a stunning rooftop bar that serves inspired drinks created with some of the world’s most recognized and respected brands, and the soon-to-open Four Walls, a more intimate bar positioned to continue a next-level experience, and the ingredients for success all but come to a boil. In a city historically known for Southern comfort food, Chef Tony and Cathy have dedicated their collective expertise to create a dining experience that ushers in a new age of authentic Italian dining in the SoBro district of Nashville. Chef Tony explains, “So many people are there. I think it’s just a perfect spot and we’re filling a niche. The positive response is not only exciting but satisfying as well. We took a chance, and it is paying off for everyone, including the foodie scene of Nashville.”

66 | resident.com

Lee Brian Schrager AND Dwyane Wade In a casual conversation about fine dining, I stripped away any pretense to learn more about this dynamic duo. Michael Travin: What is one of your favorite restaurants? It can be anywhere, anywhere in the world. Chef Tony Mantuano and Cathy Mantuano: Number one for us is always to go back to where we trained and visit Nadeem Antonio, which we did right before the pandemic. That’s the epitome of Italian luxury and hospitality. They have about 30 seats and the four-year-old kid who was running around the place playing when we all first met, is now running it [literally] with Nadia. MT: How about travel, where do you like to explore, and what are some of your favorite destinations? CTM and CM: London is so cool, and the restaurants are incredible.

MT: Any final thoughts as the festival and this interview end? CTM and CM: We’ve been doing this a long time. We are grateful for the opportunities and for successful careers, but we feel we’re not anywhere near done yet. We love what we do, we love continuing to learn and train. I think we still have things to do and can make an impact, and until that goes away we aren’t going anywhere. MT: You’re also empty nesters, correct? So, we will be able to enjoy your delicious food and wine at least until the grandchildren come? CTM and CM: Perhaps. We have an exit strategy that for us will probably include a move to Italy and launching food and wine tours. The options and opportunities are endless. In many ways, this still feels like just the beginning. Website: https://www.yolannashville.com

MT: What about hobbies?

Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo

CTM and CM: Music, we love music. There are so many little places and little clubs you can go to in Nashville and it’s always live music.

THE DUANE HOMESTEAD

The Duane Homestead is sited, majestically, at an elevated location amidst 67 fertile farmland acres. The Bedminster countryside moves in all directions and the open land provides ample opportunity for agrarian pursuits and/or a serious equestrian facility. The stone farmhouse is perfect for those individuals whose architectural sensibility lies in the “purist” realm. The Duane Homestead comes as close as possible to untouched “period” details. The original hardwood flooring, original millwork and custom built-ins, beautiful hardware, fireplaces...all add to the authenticity through the gleam of its historical patina. Here is a home that is ideal for either personal renovation or for the enjoyment of a living antique. The barn is, reportedly, one of the tallest barns in Bucks County with an interestingly distinct roof line. The in-ground pool will provide many years of enjoyment. The Duane Homestead is one of those eagerly sought after properties that exist in one’s imagination, but rarely exist in reality. Note that the acreage also includes parcel numbers 01-012-106 and 01-012-112 and that the property is in ACT 319. In addition to that, the property is subject to a Pennsylvania State Land Conservation Agreement which restricts development except for an envelope around the house and barn. See also PABU518106. Note that a new septic system is in the process of being installed. Also, there are $1,650,000 two other parcels included with this property. 1-12-106 & 1-12-112.
