EDITOR’S NOTE

THE START OF NEW BEGINNINGS

A

s the world is starting to reopen, we are excited to celebrate a return to travel and IRL events again after a year of virtual events. Our cover star this month is celebrity chef and bon vivant turned hotelier, Todd English as he opens his first namesake hotel in VegasThe English Hotel. As a four-time James Beard award winner, Todd’s accomplishments and accolades are well deserved as he has proven himself to be one of the best chefs in the world. Since he moved to Vegas over a year ago, he’s come to love the heart and soul of the city and chose the burgeoning Arts District as the home of his new hot spot. To step into The English Hotel is like being invited to Todd’s home which is an amalgamation of his eclectic interests in art, music, food, and fun which was designed to welcome the “cultured renegade.” With food and travel on our minds we are also excited to preview this year’s edition of the SOBEWFF in Miami Beach this month with an exclusive interview with Lee Schrager who founded the festival and gave us an exciting preview of what’s in store this month. We traveled the world this year bringing you highlights of where to stay in London, Miami, Vancouver and beyond to satiate the wanderlust spirit. While temperatures are getting warmer and spring is in the air, Charles Barnes and Melissa Rodwell produced Surf Manhattan featuring colorful swimwear against the vibrant cityscape backdrop of our beloved NYC. As always, Resident Magazine is a celebration of life and all of the wonderful things we have discovered along the way.

LEE SCHRAGER TAKES A BITE OUT OF FOOD NETWORK’S SOUTH BEACH WINE AND FOOD FESTIVAL by JOSHUA ESTRIN

W

hile the rest of the country is in a deep freeze, Greater Miami and Miami Beach are heating up and ready to get cooking. Bank those calories and head to the treadmill for a little bit of extra cardio because the 21st annual Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival by Capital One (SOBEWFF®), a four-day gastrogathering is back. Sink your teeth into this delicious experience from February 24-27, 2022. This year, enjoy the chance to mingle with celebrities such as Pharrell Williams, Al Roker, Jet Tila, and Dwyane Wade, as well as local chefs including Timon Balloo, Amaris Jones, and Tung Nguyen. Add to the mix a dash of Kate Hudson along with a sprinkling of Adam Levine and Eva Longoria Baston, and this event has it all. In a recent sit down with the festival’s Founder, Lee Schrager, I got the dish on what to expect in 2022.

32 | resident.com

resident.com | 33

Joshua Estrin: How do you feel about being back on the beach after having to scale back the Festival last year? Lee Schrager: We certainly were impacted by the pandemic, and everything associated with it in 2021. We scaled back and made sure our events were not only focused on the foodie experience, but safety and comfort as well. JE: You always manage to surprise the guests. What’s new this year? LS: We have an amazing line-up of A-list celebrities including Kate Hudson, Adam Levine, and Eva Longoria Baston. We like to keep it interesting, and these are people that have a love for food, fitness, and know how to host a brilliant party. JE: What iconic events can guests expect to revisit this year? LS: It wouldn’t be the same without “Burger Bash”. This year we are doing two tastings, allowing more people to experience the joy of a great burger and do so safely. We will also be returning to the Fontainebleau for “The Best of the Best”, where we will continue the tradition of showcasing the best chefs paired with the best wines.

34 | resident.com

JE: You have been doing this for many years. Does it ever get boring? LS: The short answer is no. Each year brings new friends and the chance to reunite with people I have not seen all year. We keep it all fresh – literally and figuratively. JE: What would you say to the so-called event experts who believe that large-scale food festivals are past their prime? LS: Respectfully, I would have to say the “proof is in the proof ”. Perhaps in other instances, these kinds of the events have passed their prime. We offer a magical experience that includes food, friends, and an event on the beach during the winter. I’m not sure that will ever go out of style. JE: For those who may never have attended the Festival, how would you describe what they are about to experience? LE: Emeril Lagasse probably said it best. “It is like Spring Break for chefs’” The result is an incomparable event. You taste the joy and the fun in all the food.

CELEBRITY CHEF TURNED HOTELIER TODD ENGLISH DEBUTS THE ENGLISH HOTEL A PLACE FOR THE CULTURED RENEGADE By Hillary Latos Photography by David Lee Retouching by Giedrius Jankauskas Grooming by hillary clark

A

hotel designed around a restaurant concept has been proven successful by Nobu Matsuhisa and now celebrity chef Todd English is entering into the hospitality game with The English Hotel, that opens this month in Las Vegas’ burgeoning Arts District, under Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio Collection. I’ve been fortunate enough to call Todd English a good friend for the last two decades, and of all the people I have encountered in my life, he epitomizes the very definition of a bon vivant who enjoys life to the fullest on his terms. Todd has led a very colorful life with ups and downs, twists and turns, and he always had a good story to tell. At one point in his career, Chef Todd had 58 restaurants bearing the English name, and each project spoke to a different side of his expertise and personality, but all of his experiences have culminated into

his latest project - The English Hotel. This labor of love embodies Todd’s extraordinary talent and larger than life personality- irreverent, eclectic, cool, approachable, and of course trendsetting with a soul that celebrates good food and good times. Keeping things in the family his flagship restaurant, Pepper’s Club was named after his spicy pup, which will serve a high caliber Japanese and Mediterranean fare that is sure to add some flair to the dynamic Vegas dining scene. Resident Magazine caught up with Todd English as he was getting ready for the grand opening of The English Hotel that debuts on 2.22.22.

Where did you draw inspiration for The English Hotel? After traveling the world and staying at some of the best hotels around the world, I saw what I enjoyed the most. I wanted

to create a timeless and classic place that had elements I love where old meets new. Stylistically speaking I like to mix and match things the modern art juxtaposed with a little bit of a Ralph Lauren thrown in there, it tells a story with little hidden secrets along the way. I love the vibe of the Arts District because there are no other hotels here, and its where the locals who work in hospitality hang out. This area is like Miami’s Design district 19-20 years ago with warehouses and the city is very much behind this facelift and rejuvenation of the area. It reminded me of the Wynwood area so I commissioned some pretty big street artists and influencers who created large murals to look like the Wynwood Walls. Its going to be pretty cool.

The English Hotel

912 South Main Street, Las Vegas, Theenglishhotel.com

38 | resident.com

People often think of Vegas as a city with no culture, but it does have culture. The heart and soul of the city is based on hospitality and entertainment, with an interesting subculture of people who work in these industries that makes this a fun place to live. People who work in the hospitality industry are nice, kind people and I feel like this is who I am catering to.

What elements should successful hotels have? I think it’s all service, service, service, and then really good sheets, good food and a vibe. We want it to make you feel like you’re stepping into someone’s home and not necessarily sitting in a hotel room.

After The English Hotel opens, what are your next projects? English Hospitality Group is now the parent company of English enterprises, and we are looking at developing a cannabis company, and expanding EHG to Asia which will be based in Hong Kong.

I am considering a project in Bali as well. We want to create a jungle hotel in the middle of a rice paddy surrounded by mountains with a pool that opens to the jungle with an amazing jungle restaurant.

How do you think the pandemic has affected the hospitality scene? It was certainly devastating for a lot of people when there was a shakeout but there needed to be a shift or change in the way that things had been done. I’m hoping that people will realize the importance of health and wellness that will be more prevalent in sustainability.

Are you excited to be working with your children in the English Hotel?

Tell us a little bit about your dog Pepper whom you named your signature restaurant after. I wanted to keep it lighthearted and fun and one of my favorite spices is pepper. He is this little spicy guy who is very gregarious and friendly. And I think that’s what Pepper’s Club needs to be, welcoming and fun.

How different is it to create a hotel around your restaurant versus just creating a new restaurant? There are a lot more moving parts, but it’s been a great experience to be working with food, art and music, and appeal to all of the senses.

Yes, I’m so excited to work with my daughter Isabelle, we’ll have a lot of fun. She’ll probably yell at me a lot, but that’s okay.

CORINTHIA LONDON:

A CHIC RETREAT IN THE HEART OF LONDON By Elizabeth Darwen

C

orinthia London, located just steps from Trafalgar Square, Westminster, the River Thames, and Covent Garden, combines grandeur and heritage with exquisite, intelligent design. The hotel is a destination in and of itself, with 283 rooms, 51 suites, seven penthouses, three world-class restaurants, and a truly unrivaled spa. Corinthia London has a fascinating historical pedigree. The establishment first opened in the late 1800s, with a brochure touting its virtues that would not be lost on the modern visitor. That the hotel’s location is especially recommended to ladies and families visiting the West End during the Season; to travelers from Paris and the Continent arriving at the Charing Cross Terminus from Dover and Folkestone; to Officers and others attending the levees at St James; to Ladies attending the Drawing Rooms, State Balls, and Concerts at Buckingham Palace; and to colonial and American visitors unfamiliar with the great world of London. The hotel’s location caused it to be requisitioned by the government during the First and Second World Wars in order to provide extra space for conflict administration. Room 474 served as the first headquarters for SOE, which is now part of the British Secret Intelligence Service, or MI6 (of James Bond fame).

44 | resident.com

After being sold in the mid-2000s, an extensive refurbishment brought the building’s history full circle, returning it to its roots as a luxury destination in the heart of London. The hotel now has a number of rooms, suites, and penthouses, all of which feature Hypnos beds, Nespresso machines, and Samsung televisions. Corinthia London debuted eleven new ‘Garden’ and ‘London’ suites in 2018, providing guests with a broader selection of luxurious suites to choose from. The London Suite is inspired by a day in the capital; the light, airy interior pays homage to modern living, with modern amenities and cutting-edge technology. The 105m² dual aspect suite features featured artwork and sculptures from the Cubism era. The space was designed with privacy in mind, and for guests who want to entertain, there are doorways to each functional space as well as the option of two additional adjoining bedrooms. The Garden Suite, which overlooks a beautifully landscaped courtyard, is designed with a nod to the quintessential British garden. A tranquil atmosphere is created by the use of verdant green accents in soft furnishings and live planting. The botanical color scheme and texture pervade the 67m² suite, encouraging guests to unwind as the doors open directly into a living area with a feature fireplace and the main seating area that wraps around it. The extensive multi-floor spa - ESPA Life - is one of the true highlights of Corinthia London. Wake up tired limbs with an ESPA warming and lifting treatment to relax and rejuvenate the body and mind. The treatment starts with a relaxing back

massage that uses hot stones to warm and comfort the body. This helps to relieve muscle tension and soothe aching muscles, especially during the colder months when the body holds tension in this area of the body. The spa also offers six specialist facials along with a range of products from Dr Barbara Sturm Molecular Cosmetics. At Corinthia London, afternoon tea is taken seriously. A fragrant ceremony to grace, charm, and tradition, rather than a convenient refreshment. A slow-

burning pleasure that should never be rushed. A delightful reminder that time is a precious commodity to be savored. And Corinthia’s is held in a brightly lit lounge, illuminated by the warm glow of 1,001 Baccarat crystal bulbs. Where afternoon tea is an indulgent ceremony, and classic dishes are refined and reborn under the eye of worldrenowned chefs, Corinthia London is a gourmand’s paradise. The Garden is a city-centre oasis designed for alfresco dining. The winter season features a

dreamy Alpine menu. Another dining destination at Corinthia London is Kerridge’s Bar & Grill. Tom Kerridge, the renowned Michelin-starred chef, has created a menu for his first London restaurant that pays homage to classics while also capitalizing on his reputation for serving his own take on the UK’s most celebrated dishes. Taking a break from the daily grind is a well-earned luxury. Corinthia allows you to discover London while enjoying exclusive benefits.

THE MAYFAIR TOWNHOUSE

LONDON’S NEW STYLISH LIFESTYLE HOTEL By Norah Bradford

48 | resident.com

T

he Mayfair Townhouse surprises and redefines what it means to be a London hotel. Overlooking London’s Green Park, this is the fifth hotel in the Iconic Luxury Hotels UK portfolio, introducing an unexpected new personality from the traditional brand offering. In the heart of Mayfair, the extravagant London hotel is a new generation of lifestyle hotel, and as Hubert Losguardi Director of Sales and Marketing at The Mayfair Townhouse says, “Mayfair Townhouse is where you’ll find both luxury and the joy of the unexpected and in three words, we are ‘Curious, engaging and witty’.”

Without the restrictions of a traditional hotel, there is not a single room at The Townhouse that has not been meticulously curated. The hotel fills a void between ritzy high-end lavish hotels and the corporate enterprise properties that currently stand in Mayfair. Expect the unexpected when you walk through The Townhouse’s doors. Surprising moments await around every corner of the fifteen connected Georgian buildings that line Half Moon Street, which once served as the setting for

Oscar Wilde’s most famous play, “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Built in the 1730’s Victorian London, Half Moon Street was a vibrant hangout for bachelors, bohemians, and artistic types. Moments in history and culture are woven throughout The Mayfair Townhouse’s discreet address, defining the central pillars of design and personality of this eclectic hotel.

resident.com | 49

The Mayfair Townhouse offers many exquisite room options. The Garden Suites, one of only two suites of their kind at the Townhouse, offer a bright and airy open plan with access to a private patio. These beautiful suites are designed with elegance and spirit, and are fully equipped with Townhouse tipples, dandy candy, and a sumptuous King-sized bed to spread out in. If you want to live like a celebrity, one of their luxuriously appointed Signature Suites is the place to be. Whether you choose The Skylight Suite, The Fifth Floor Suite,

50 | resident.com

or The Loft Suite (which includes two bedrooms) on the fifth floor and with an abundance of space, you will relax in privacy and enjoy living the Mayfair life. From the cozy Cabin rooms to the larger Executive rooms, The Townhouse’s entry level accommodations take satisfaction to a whole new level, while still providing a quirky space for you to lay your head after a day of exploring the wonders of Mayfair. With remarkable libations and stunning design, The Dandy Bar is The

Townhouse’s heart and soul. where you can escape from the bustling streets of Mayfair. The Dandy Bar is the epitome of bespoke cocktails. Take, for example, The Mayfair Dandy, an avant-garde take on the classic Dandy cocktail once enjoyed by the area’s hedonists. The design, of course, evokes the dandy spirit. The lampshades have silk pleated shades, the seating is covered in printed velvets and leathers, and the room is decorated with marble, brass, and high gloss timbers.

The Mayfair Townhouse does not have a traditional restaurant; instead, you are invited to The Lower Ground Floor, a vibrant space located downstairs off the entrance lobby. This is a place for the modern nomad traveler to work, explore and connect with the personalities of the time, and enjoy breakfast. As you enjoy this convivial library-esque space, take in the whimsical characters on the walls. Beyond these confines, the main dining room awaits, offering a versatile oasis for private dining or an elegant gathering place.

Mayfair is synonymous with status, heritage, and prestige, and it is surrounded by world-class shopping, bespoke retailers, fine dining restaurants, and cultural attractions. The Mayfair Townhouse offers both luxury and the thrill of the unexpected. Guests come for the exceptional service and inspiring environment, and they leave with renewed confidence that choosing personality over conformity is always worthwhile.

DINING OUT By Hillary Latos

As there has never been a shortage of dining experiences in NYC, this month we are pleased to feature some new gems that would tantalize the palate. Experience a taste of sustainable farm to table. Mediterranean cuisine at Amali, Midtown East’s latest gem, ideally situated near Bloomingdales. Thoughtfully named after a Turkish word used to describe the commonality of the ancient lands west of Istanbul the menu and cooking techniques are inspired by the rich historical traditions shared by Greece, Italy, France, Israel and Spain, with a NYC edge.

Bathed in an airy and light dining room, the atmosphere has the vibe of a charming seaside enoteca on a luxurious Greek island. The culinary journey begins with a serving of delicious fluffy sesame bread paired with whipped feta butter. Start with the Kampache crudo with vibrant citrus notes from the Asian pear, Thai basil, and lime. One of the standout dishes is the Koginut squash and lobster ravioli topped with Perigord truffle and the filet mignon with Maitake mushrooms, and be sure to save room for a classic tiramisu for dessert. Amali also showcases a range of excellent and lesser known Greek wines, biodynamic and organic Mediterranean wines, and boutique wineries founded by female

winemakers. The wine list has received the “Best Of ” Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator annually since 2012. This carefully curated menu was created by Alex Tubero who was born and raised in South Florida and was inspired to pursue a career as a chef after reading Thomas Keller’s French Laundry Cookbook. He moved to Napa and enrolled at the Culinary Institute of America where he worked at Thomas Keller’s Ad Hoc in Yountville, CA and later honed his skills in some of NYC’s best kitchens including Betony, Union Square Café and Legacy Records to create one of the most innovative menus in NYC’s restaurant scene.

As New Yorkers are always curious to experience new adventures in dining, the latest Asian fusion speakeasy just opened in Midtown’s garment district. Behind a bold Asian inspired mural is the entrance to Sei Less, which is reminiscent of the grand nightclub/ dining destination concept that Tao has immortalized, but with a newer and contemporary flair. Created by five seasoned NYC nightlife and hospitality impresarios, including Joseph Licul, co-owner of Harbor Rooftop Nightclub; Dennis Turcinovic, former managing partner of Delmonico’s Restaurant Group and co-owner of Harbor Rooftop Nightclub; Dara Mirjahgiry from Jue Lan Club and Philippe Chow; Ivi Shano formerly from Jue Lan Club; and Dream Hospitality spearheaded by George Karavias, who have collectively brought their secrets of success to create Midtown’s latest hotspot.

Designed for a night out on the town, the sprawling 8,000 square foot space can seat 350 guests in a sultry 1930s Shanghai setting with a contemporary Asian flair. Banquettes line the walls that are perfectly lit for a romantic tete a tete which surround a lively U-shaped bar as the centerpiece scene. Traditional hand carved Asian design elements pay homage to the traditional pagodas of the past with modern art and sumptuous furnishings. But the star of the show is the modern pan - Asian fusion menu that takes center stage. Signature dishes include Chicken Satay, Pastrami Egg Rolls with kimchi, and Rock Shrimp Tempura along with standouts such as the grilled Ribeye and a colossal lobster with a ginger scallion sauce. Dishes strike the perfect balance between sweet and savory with a bit of spice and pair perfectly with Asian inspired cocktails such as the Lychee Martini, Yuzu Margarita and Elderflower

Mojito. Whether you are grabbing a bite before or after a show at Madison Square Garden or are looking for a late nightcap, Sei Less is open Sunday through Thursday until midnight and 1 am on the weekends. “It’s an incredible opportunity to bring destination dining back to NYC in a way that also honors the city’s international history and mystique,” said Dennis Turcinovic, CEO. “The team behind Sei Less merges decades of exemplary experience to create a speakeasy vibe that is truly unique. We have created something extraordinary, inside and out, and we are thrilled to finally open our doors and realize our vision in action.”

Pronounced home, the name is inspired by the kitchen most often serving as gathering place in a home– a place to create connection with those around you over food and drink. HOWM is West Chelsea’s newest gastropub located in the lobby of the Selina Chelsea hotel, which is part of a hotel chain group with a strong presence in Latin and Central America and is reminiscent of the dynamic contemporary dining scene of Mexico City and Bogota, Colombia with the light and airy 70s vibe awash in a neutral palette with a lovely open garden area in the back to enjoy in the warmer months. Ecuadorian born Chef Byron Peñafiel created a menu comprised of small dishes and sharing plates that takes cues from his native South American cuisine but mixed with a modern NYC contemporary flair. Start with some South American specialties such as the signature guac, Peruvian fluke ceviche or chicken empanadas. For all day dining delve into the fish or veggie tacos or for larger appetites try the char broiled hanger steak with chimichurri and yuca fries or the guava glazed half chicken. Enjoy bespoke cocktails with a South American flair with a mixology program created by Gilded Group’s Beverage Director, Daniel Bedoya, who lends a creative flair to the beverage program. Try his unique and potent libations such as El Aguacate with a tarragon infused cachaca, avocado, lime juice and vanilla or the Martin el Sucio with tequila, roasted garlic infused mezcal, Lillet and orange bitters topped with a pickled beech mushroom.

THE DUANE HOMESTEAD The Duane Homestead is sited, majestically, at an elevated location amidst 67 fertile farmland acres. The Bedminster countryside moves in all directions and the open land provides ample opportunity for agrarian pursuits and/or a serious equestrian facility. The stone farmhouse is perfect for those individuals whose architectural sensibility lies in the “purist” realm. The Duane Homestead comes as close as possible to untouched “period” details. The original hardwood flooring, original millwork and custom built-ins, beautiful hardware, and fireplaces all add to the authenticity through the gleam of its historical patina. Here is a home that is ideal for either personal renovation or for the enjoyment of a living antique. The barn is, reportedly, one of the tallest barns in Bucks County with an interestingly distinct roof line. The in-ground pool will provide many years of enjoyment. The Duane Homestead is one of those eagerly sought after properties that exist in one’s imagination, but rarely exist in reality. Note that the acreage also includes parcel numbers 01-012-106 and 01-012-112 and that the property is in ACT 319. In addition to that, the property is subject to a Pennsylvania State Land Conservation Agreement which restricts development except for an envelope around the house and barn. $1,650,000
