Dream. His contributions to New York City were so impressive that on his 40th anniversary Mayor Bloomberg declared September 4th the Elie Tahari Day. To learn more about Tahari’s fascinating journey, watch his poignant documentary, “The United States of Elie Tahari.” Norma Kamali’s, latest tome, I Am Invincible, was the inspiration of our fashion editorial which embodies the strength and power of femininity. Conceptualized and styled in Norma Kamali by Fredo Montes, he brings the fashion legend’s wit and wisdom to life of a woman who finds the courage and conviction to race after her dreams and never look back. While the world was locked down, we couldn’t wait to travel again. This month we featured the sunny destinations of Cancun, St. Martin, and Paso Robles to whet our wanderlust appetite. As 2021 comes to a close, take the time to reflect and shed the habits that no longer serve you, and open your mind and heart to new ideas and attitudes in order to embrace the joys that 2022 will bring.

A

s we close the door on 2021, it’s inspiring to see New York City come back to life abuzz with activity and energy that you can only find in the Big Apple. This year has proven its resilience through catastrophes and pandemics that have besieged our great city. Outmoded ways of thinking dropped by the wayside and new attitudes and faces infused a new life. Just like New York City is back, Resident Magazine has also come back with a fresh perspective. To celebrate this renaissance of the New New York, we tapped fashion insider Frederick Anderson as our cover as he chats with his Manhattanite besties, a new guard of social “It” girls, about how New York City has emerged after the pandemic and how it has changed for the better. He sat with Petra Khashoggi, Sarika Rastogi, and Joanna

Gong who hail from the inner circles of the fashion and art world. They had a tete a tete about the evolution of the fashion industry, how Manhattan social life has changed, and what a post pandemic New York looks like. But what they all found inspiring is the sense of community and resilience of New Yorkers that remains resolute. After a great period of reflection, they have all realized what is truly important to them and whom they really want to surround themselves with. As one of the driving forces in shaping the New York Fashion industry over the last half century, we spoke with Elie Tahari. An Israeli immigrant who came to America with only $100 in his pocket, Tahari went on to build a multi billion dollar fashion brand, and emulates the rags to riches American

FROM DAVOS TO MIAMI: DANIEL ORSON YBARRA CAPTURES LIGHT AND TRANSPARENCY THROUGH HIS MASTERPIECES By Danielle Gingerich

F

rom Davos to Miami, one Art Basel artist, Daniel Orson Ybarra, has inspired collectors around the globe. Ybarra’s works make up the permanent collections of various museums, art centers, foundations and private collections; such as the World Economic Forum, and have been presented in more than a hundred individual and group exhibitions on five continents: galleries, art fairs, biennials, triennials, contemporary art centers, foundations and museums. Inspired by the observation of nature -jungles, forests, gardens, Ybarra is fascinated by the process of growth, generation and inflorescence. “My paintings, collages, and assemblages follow a logic: games of colored shadows and iridescent lights, which pass through foliage and colored magmas. These infinite techniques and plastic processes subject it to a ludic expansion treatment, which gives it a new legibility. I compose, depositing the painting delicately in an attempt to mitigate the naturalistic reference and move it, slowly and carefully, to the field of abstraction” says Ybarra. Hilde Schwab, Chairperson and CoFounder of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship and the World Economic Forum, says “Ybarra is a spiritual journey, an invitation for us all to contemplate our lives in the face of change. What is it like to reach for the stars?”

Ybarra would know. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, of Basque and Russian origin, Ybarra’s paternal family originated in Bilbao and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and his maternal grandparents immigrated from Moscow and Odessa, respectively. Ybarra’s passion for the arts began at a young age. As a child, his grandmother Anastasia taught him reading, drawing, painting and cooking, and at fourteen, his history teacher organized an important surprise -- his first exhibition. After school, Ybarra had plans to study Philosophy, Psychology, Literature, or Fine Arts at University, but decided to take a sabbatical year to reflect in Latin America. The journey lasted eight years. Ybarra ended up traveling throughout Latin America, the United States, Europe and Scandinavia, North Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia, including China. During that period, he dedicated himself to fully living “those years of total freedom, in a true carpe diem”. His curiosity was endless, and he took advantage of practicing the languages he already knew (English and French) and learning new ones, such as Norwegian and Swedish, Portuguese and Italian. He made a living trying out different jobs from gardener to babysitter, ice cream vendor to saucepan, bathroom cleaner to hotel receptionist, ship welder to public relations for a cabaret, UN official and many

more. However, he never lost his love for painting. During his travels, he continued selling his drawings and paintings on Las Ramblas in Barcelona, in the port of SaintTropez, or in bars in New York. He worked as an assistant for various artists in Spain, France, and Switzerland, and in 1988, he was selected to work as an assistant to Antoni Tàpies on his trip to Latin America, accompanying a sample of thirteen Catalan artists. Finally, he became the personal assistant of the Spanish painter Josep GrauGarriga. This experience, accompanying the master on his South American journey and visiting multiple workshops of artists in the region, was the catalyst for inspiring Ybarra to pursue a career in the arts. Former First Lady of Florida turned Impact Investor and Philanthropist, Carole Crist, says “My friend Daniel is an extraordinary artist as well as an incredibly kind and humble man. I find his work to be extremely unique and beautiful—the vibrant colors inspired by nature presented on large scale pieces make a truly powerful statement. I so look forward to once again having the pleasure to see him and his work at Miami and Palm Beach Art Fairs this winter.” Ybarra currently lives between Geneva and Barcelona and is the father of three children.

ICONIC CHUCK’S VINTAGE BRINGS CLASSIC AMERICAN COOL STYLE By Ann Grenier

C

huck’s Vintage has opened a new location in Manhattan, and they are offering the most fashionable gifts this holiday season. Fashionistas have been raving about the collection, which showcases the best of the past in the present, since it debuted on the Upper East Side this fall. The late Madeline Cammarata, the founder of Chuck’s Vintage, was always concerned with making people happy through clothing. Honoring her legacy with gifts from this timeless store will allow you to share the joy with the denim lovers in your life for a longer period of time. Even those who prefer a gift that is not your typical department store gift will fall in love with a gift from here. Madeline founded Chuck’s Vintage in 2006, and it quickly became a true American original. Her extensive collection became prized possessions for celebrities and business elites ranging from Steve Jobs to famous musicians such as Dolly Parton, Robert Plant, Morrisey, and others. From the famous to simple classic style enthusiasts, they have all passed through the doors of Chuck’s Vintage in the California hotspot shop - where a world-renowned denim archivist once entrusted Madeline with millions of dollars’ worth of collectible denim that she proudly sold. The new store’s vintage denim showcase must be seen to be believed. The blue jeans in the Upper East Side location will include Strongholds from the California Gold Rush mines, World War II-era Levi’s, Lees, and Wranglers, as well as 1960’s ladies high-waisted and groovy deadstock Levi’s bells. Chuck’s will also feature a selection of the founder’s vintage American workwear, including rugged military and work boots, buttery leather bomber jackets, and soft, perfectly worn-in vintage 1970’s rock tees. Classic American Cool. Chuck’s Vintage, based in California, recently brought classic style to Manhattan with a grand celebration honoring the brand’s legacy and its founder. At a private party at Classic Cars of Manhattan, invited guests celebrated the arrival of Chuck’s Vintage. Notable VIP

guests gathered at Pier 76 for a night of old-school fun and modern twists that will mix the brand’s time-honored vibes with edgy New York City fashion tones. DJ Lee Kalt and vocalist Xandra K provided special live entertainment. Visit the flagship retail outlet to shop for timehonored clothing at 173 East 91st Street, Basement, New York, NY 10128. THE UNITED STATES OF ELIE TAHARI – A PIONEER IN CREATING THE NEW YORK FASHION INDUSTRY By Hillary Latos

O

ver the last 50 years, fashion designer Elie Tahari has been instrumental in shaping the NY Fashion industry and making it what it is today. In 1971, he came to NYC from Israel with only $100 in his pocket, slept on park benches in Central Park, and went on to build a billion dollar fashion empire and lived the American Dream. Although there are thousands of fashion companies worldwide, but only three have lasted for more than 45 years globally and are still run by their founders: Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, and Elie Tahari. Tahari has a global presence on five continents, is sold in more than 600 stores in over 40 countries and worn by A list celebrities. Released in 2021, “The United States of Elie Tahari” is a documentary that chronicles his inspiring rags to riches journey and his creative process in a career spanning four decades seen through the lens of a fashion insider against a glamorous backdrop of disco, runway models, Studio 54 and more. Here Resident Magazine speaks to this iconic designer who has shaped the New York City Fashion industry over the last half century. RM: What transpired you to create a documentary of your life and following the American Dream? And how did you decide on a career in fashion?

20 | resident.com

ET: It started with a conversation with David Serero who produced the film. He was inspired by my story and from there we built a team. The truth is that I fell into a career in fashion. I was working as an electrician, and I was sent into a boutique in Greenwich village. From there I met the owner and saw the inner workings of the store and how they made money. I was a natural when it came to fashion, got promoted and that’s how I got into fashion. While I did not have a mentor, I wanted to be able to provide for my family and that was my motivation. RM: How do you think fashion has changed from when you began to now? ET: In the 1960s and 70s women were very properly dressed and made up. Now the look has become more casual, and the more wrinkles the better. The aesthetic has totally changed. RM: Do you think it’s harder for people to break into fashion and become a designer these days? Or do you think that with social media and more outlets, it’s easier? ET: In some ways it’s easier, but overall, I would say much more difficult, and I think there’s much more competition now and less opportunities. Also, the department stores are not what they used to be. In the past they were very profitable but now online is the future with more customers shopping online. RM: Which designers do you admire? ET: I admire different designers for different reasons, and I like people more than others. Who looks fresh to me these days? Bottega Veneta and Moncler looks good. But that’s what today, but its different times now and different pieces.

resident.com | 23

RM: What were some of the highlights of your career and turning points? ET: Every day was a new highlight. It was very exciting. For my 40th anniversary Mayor Bloomberg declared September 4th the Elie Tahari Day in NYC. This day honors a prominent immigrant who has come to America and has made a difference in some creative or business way. In the beginning I was making more tailored clothing but now the collection is much more casual. I’m excited over that, and this is what I see in the past and the future. RM: What advice would you give to an aspiring fashion designer? ET: The same thing I would tell my children, whatever you do make sure it makes you happy. RM: Do you think do you still feel that New York is the capital of American fashion? ET: New York is the capital. All the designers follow American fashion in New York City. The big designers in Europe take cues from American fashion, and NYC is the capital of the world. RM: What are some of your favorite moments in your movie? ET: The highlight is that my children know my story, and hopefully it will inspire other people. I hope the documentary will give hope and inspire people to do good in the world. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of bad intentions in the world now and I hope that the good will overcome the bad. Being kind, compassionate, loving and caring is not a weakness, it’s a strength. So hopefully the movie will motivate people towards that direction.

WE’LL TAKE MANHATTAN FREDERICK ANDERSON AND FRIENDS CELEBRATE A REIMAGINED NYC By FREDERICK ANDERSON Photography by Petros Koy Shot at Omar’s NYC

A

darling of the Manhattan social set, Frederick Anderson has been an insider in the fashion industry for over two decades riding the ebbs and flows of the business as the President of Douglas Hannant and Hanley before launching his namesake brand four years ago. “I’m excited about having this new brand because after all these years in fashion, it’s exciting for me to have a story that’s my own. Part of that story is my change in attitude- not just towards fashion, but towards New York, my life and the people who were in it. The people that I surround myself with and the people that I’ve influenced, my fashion is much more authentically me now. As we are coming back to New York, I think New York needed a change,” Anderson bemuses.

SARIKA RASTOGI

JOANNA

GONG

PETRA

KHASHOGGI

FREDERICK ANDERSON

While the pandemic in 2020 had drastically changed New York City forever, NYC has proven its resilience and reemerged stronger than ever, but in a different light. Celebrated fashion designer Frederick Anderson chats with his cadre of Manhattanite besties who are insiders from the fashion and art worlds, Petra Khashoggi, Joanna Gong, and Sarika Rastogi, about how NYC has changed post pandemic, how they have personally changed, and why NYC is still the best city in the world. FA: We’ve gone through a lot, but the wonderful thing about New York is the resilience. New York is always bendable and changeable, yet it still stays the same. New York City is a staple that drives us all here for energy, excitement, and inspiration. But with that, we gather new energies. Many people have left, but it’s exciting to see all the new people who are coming in and how they change it. Sarika, what do you love most about this city? SR: I have such a reverence for this city and all I wanted to do is meet amazing

people who have amazing experiences and New York has given it back to me in ACEs, in spades. I’ve lived here through 9/11, Hurricane Sandy, and recently this pandemic. The spirit of this town always comes back and it’s nothing but resilient and strong, and seeing it come back at this point is so inspiring and exciting. FA: How do you think the city has changed? SR: I’ve worked in fashion PR for over 20 years, and it’s interesting to see how things have shifted, but it’s coming back in a way that’s more purposeful. People have a different outlook on how things are. There’s a different texture to it. Now when I go out, it’s smaller more intimate groups, and it’s not about going to three things. People are entertaining at home more, and you get to know people better. FA: Miss Petra Khashoggi, tell us about yourself and what your thoughts are on NYC coming back. PK: I’m working on a book which is a collection of essays called, Ten Years in America, as I officially moved here from London ten years ago. It’s been really fascinating to watch how the city has evolved over the last 10 years, but particularly during the pandemic which made people reflect a lot more. Now the energy is so alive in the city and it’s like a new New York! FA: Joanna, tell us about yourself and what you love about the New NYC? JG: I work in the art world and recently relocated to New York. I grew up internationally in four different countries, but New York has always been one of the most special places. It’s a place that is not just a big melting pot with different ethnicities and cultures, but also a unique interaction of classes where the Wall Street banker can chat up the taco guy. This is

a New York phenomenon that is truly heartwarming that I decided to like buy a townhouse in Harlem, which to me is all about the neighborhood and the community. It’s the essence of walking out and having a feeling that everyone on the block knows each other and is connected. This undying energy and resilience that the city had throughout the pandemic has been truly the most inspiring thing to witness coming in and out of the city. The art world is on fire, and the art market is truly booming. People are looking at their homes and their walls as assets and want to surround themselves with beautiful tangible objects. Our interactions and experiences with each other are changing into a more domestic setting where people are focusing on their homes and their own quality of life. That kind of energy I think is irreplaceable. FA: Petra, what are the places that you find exciting now? PA: I live on Bond Street so Zero Bond is my local haunt, and the atmosphere there is always very cool. The pandemic has made me reassess who I want to hang out with, and I’m much more selective now about the people I’ll go and socialize with. FA: Sarika, how has the fashion world come back? SR: The fashion industry is a very tight knit group of people. I also think there’s a nostalgia about New York and a renaissance of classic places and brands. When Temple Bar reopened in Soho everyone was really excited about it, especially after COVID to know that those places are still there. The different neighborhoods that each have their own community is what makes New York so amazing. The fashion calendar was already shifting, and I think after COVID it was a different mentality.

resident.com | 37

FA: COVID made us less open to everyone and more selective on who we let into our private world. You will see a crop of new private clubs, private ideas and private parties, such as Casa Cipriani and Zero Bond. Even though it’s the same people you see all the time, somehow it seems new with new energy. The fashion world needed a revitalization. We needed to get rid of some of the old brands that have been sitting there for so many years that held back the creativity in New York, and I’m happy to be part of the new birth. I think that’s the exciting thing about New York, you can continue to change and reinvent yourself. People dress very uniquely these days. This came about during the lockdown when people sat at home and found things on the internet and social media. You also see this in the rebirth of the new stores that are coming who rethought themselves and brought in new brands. JG: I think that’s why we’re seeing this energy and ingenuity because it’s a different type of energy out there in society, because people are not afraid. They don’t necessarily feel the pressure to conform as much anymore, and they are coming into their own with different sorts of revelations. I see this in the art world, the fashion world, and our social circles. People are now realizing that you are all you have, and you must be comfortable in your own skin. FA: I think it’s interesting that the outcome is a calmness of wanting to be more in touch with yourself and the people that you choose to be your chosen family. This is a wonderful, beautiful thing to have come out of the pandemic. We were so extroverted and now we’ve decided to turn inside and find out

38 | resident.com

what makes us happy and what we want to keep in our lives. I feel that a woman needs to be in touch with her clothing and that is a story which affects everything from the way that we speak and how we exchange ideas. My designs remind me of life stages, and the collection breathes light and energy. PK: It’s almost like a butterfly that emerges and explodes with color. The movement of the clothes is amazing with its different textures, colors, and shapes. It feels very light and fun, and it makes me excited to be social again. FA: One thing that I always think about when I’m designing is individuality, and how I want people to see themselves living in my clothes. It’s meant to enhance and help your personality. I want the clothes to be chic. I do think clothing should have personality, it’s a part of your armor. My Instagram says, “Fashion is your conversation with the world.” I always think the first thing that you say is what you’re wearing, and you’ve made a statement by choosing that. We decide each day how we want to be perceived, and I put on my little outfit based on how I feel. PK: The clothing enhances the conversation, and when you wear a Frederick canvas and design, everyone’s going to come and talk to you whether you like it or not!

Starring Oscar-nominated Patricia Clarkson as Lilly, Josh Lucas as her beloved husband Charles, and Thomas Sadoski as her attorney Jon Goldfarb, LILLY tells the intimate, personal story of fair pay icon Lilly Ledbetter’s fight for equal pay that led to the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act of 2009. Led by Writer/Director Rachel Feldman (Criminal Minds, The Rookie) and producer J. Todd Harris (The Kids Are All Right, The Trial of the Chicago 7), in close collaboration with Lilly Ledbetter herself, LILLY is a story about radical resilience which will have the power to energize conversations regarding gender equality. “Playing Lilly is truly an honor,” Clarkson said of the role, “I’m thrilled to bring this extraordinary woman to life.” LILLY showcases one woman’s persistence over 20 years of unimaginable harassment and discrimination in the workplace, and her courageous refusal to stand down in the face of gross injustice. “If you’re a person, anywhere in the world, who’s been othered, beat down, minimized, excluded, cheated, or harassed, you are a Lilly,” said Director/Writer Rachel Feldman. “These are universal themes,” she added, ”and we’re thrilled to have the prestige sales company, Mr. Smith representing LILLY for the world.”

In the final stages of funding, this truly independent film’s budget has been raised from donors and investors of conscience, who believe in the power of Lilly’s story of persistence and courage, and is being produced in tandem with social action initiative, +Rise, focused on ensuring safe, equal, and fair workplaces for all women. LILLY has garnered the support of luminaries such as Meryl Streep, Billie Jean King, the Geena Davis Institute On Gender In Media, and the Barbra Streisand Foundation. “We’d be delighted to welcome additional community leaders, non-profits, and corporate partners to join our robust venture, engaging consumers toward positive change,” said producer J. Todd Harris. One supporter, Carole Crist, former First Lady of Florida turned Impact Investor and Philanthropist said, “This is a true passion project for me. As a mother of two daughters, and has led my family’s 100-year-old business for 25 years, bringing this project to life is a cause near and dear to my heart. Throughout my business career and serving as First Lady of Florida, I’ve been an avid supporter of working women and I encourage everyone to join me in supporting this film by making a charitable donation to LILLY. Together, we can help bring Lilly Ledbetter’s inspiring true story to the big screen. It’s going to be something special!”

Writer/Director Rachel Feldman’s approach is, “from a psychological point of view, it’s a political thriller. We’ll take the audience on a roller coaster ride of euphoria, suspense, and heartbreak. Like successful social justice dramas that have come before us, ‘Erin Brockovich’ or ‘Spotlight’, my goal is to tell a story about an everyday woman who put her life on the line to fight for what was right. She was an impoverished Alabama wife, mother, and factory worker - who changed an American law for the betterment of society. Lilly’s story can change hearts and minds. That’s the impact of powerful entertainment.” Lilly Ledbetter herself had this to say about the project, “Rachel Feldman came to me years ago, burning with the vision to tell my story. I had faith in her from the beginning that she could get this done and she’s pulled together a team of wonderful people. I’m proud that my story is being made by a woman over 60, starring a woman over 60, about a woman over 60.” Feldman added, “We honor the Bechdel Test, that raised consciousness about women’s roles in films, and now we hope we’ll have ‘The Lilly Test,’ where mature, adult women are the superheroes.” Visit @ www.LillyMovie. com to find out more.

THE PATH TO PASO ROBLES W

by Elena murzello

elcome to the harvest crush season in California Wine Country! While wine enthusiasts often flock to the crowded spots of Napa and Sonoma, the lesser known and equally as critically acclaimed Paso Robles should be on your radar. Nestled along the Central Coast, Paso is sandwiched in between SF and LA and home to over 250 wineries. The short drive makes it an easy weekend getaway or in my case, a reunion with my cousin after two long years. Not sure where to start your wine tasting adventure? Do yourself a favor and download the Paso Robles Wineries Wine Tasting Map (https://pasorobleswineries. net/paso-robles-wine-tasting-map/) which includes a comprehensive and complete guide to all the wineries in the area. Can’t get to Paso this season but still want to support small independent wineries? Check out Vinebase (https://vinebase.com).

https://www.allegrettovineyardresort.com Allegretto Vineyard Resort The remainder of our short stay was at the Tuscan-inspired Allegretto Vineyard Resort. The Allegretto has 171 guest rooms and suites and has all the fixings of a destination resort: Spa, gym, outdoor pool with cabanas combined with a number of other amenities like Art Docent Tours, tandem bicycles, meditation classes and a sonic labyrinth too. Walk along the many garden trails on the 20 acres and you’ll not only see grapes, olive and fruit trees, but also bee hives, goats and George, the resident Alpaca. On site, eat at Cello for casual comfort foods or sit in the 12,000 sq ft piazza and try some varietals at the Allegretto Tasting Room. Everything like the word Allegretto, in English, is done with joy.

Getting Around By accident, my cousin rented a fully electric vehicle instead of the hybrid. This turned into a learning opportunity for the both of us as we had no prior experience calculating mileage against charge. We used the ChargeHubEV app to find charger stations peppered along the route, in addition to the ever-faithful Google maps. We were fully impressed with the amount of infrastructure available; we found charging stations everywhere - at hotels, banks, wineries and all along the 101. With the somewhat seamless (until we ran into some traffic heading back to the airport) smooth ride, it definitely underscored the possibility of EV in the near future and made travelling around wine country even more exciting.

the food will. Both our decadent dinner and scrumptious breakfast were prepared by the Michelin acknowledged Executive Chef Rachel Haggstrom and her team of The Restaurant at JUSTIN. The farmstead of the restaurant is comprised of over twenty-six acres of orchards, vegetable gardens & edible-flower fields. With such an expansive resource, it’s no wonder that every dish is thoughtfully curated. Look out for the 12,000 sq ft. Chateau, which will be unveiled in the new year.

Our first night, we delayed our dinner to arrive just before sunset to check out Bruce Munro: Light at Sensorio. This 15-acre Field of Light is filled with over 58,000 fiber-optic stemmed spheres that glow and change colors. The view from the VIP terrace is complete with fire pits and an Airstream bar. Or you can walk around the installation to take it all in. Follow the path to the Light Towers, which features 69 towers that are made from 17,388 wine bottles at 252 bottles per tower. Feeling a little peckish? Grab some snacks at the surrounding food trucks and listen to live entertainment by local musicians while you eat. If you can’t make it with the family this year – fear not, the installation will continue on into 2022.

https://www.bookerwines.com Booker Vineyard

Our last full day we took a visit to the Dirk’s family Pasolivo ranch, which has produced award-winning California olive oil for over a decade. The 140-acre ranch was originally owned by legendary Hollywood director and producer King Vidor. Vidor directed such classics as War & Peace, Stella Dallas, Northwest Passage, and The Champ, as well as the black and white portion of The Wizard of Oz. It’s no wonder that the Pasolivo ranch is so picturesque with large oak trees amongst the property. Stay for a tasting of flavorful EVOO and balsamic vinegars complete with a range of spices and salts. My favorites were the Tuscan EVOO and the Fig Balsamic Vinegar (and I’m not normally a vinegar fan). Pasolivo also has a collection of bath and body products too. All made with EVOO. I loved the whipped body butter and the Grapefruit hand lotion has been a staple since the trip.

Our last tasting was at Booker. It all started with the Booker brothers, Claude and Dick. Who, as two orphans in the late 1920’s, soon acquired over 1,200 acres on Paso’s Westside. Almost eighty years later, in 2001, Eric and Lisa Jensen purchased 100 acres of the property and released their first Vintage for Booker Vineyard in 2005. Staying true to the altruistic values of the Booker brothers, a portion of proceeds from every Booker Vineyard purchase is donated to must! Charities (mustcharities.org), helping local people in need. Earlier this year, the vineyard received organic certification and opened a new cave lounge and (my favorite) the beautiful indoor/outdoor terrace for guests to enjoy the scenery, ambiance and delicious wines, topped off with Eric’s personal playlist of tunes to set the mood.

EAT/DRINK

From Pasolivo we squeezed in a short stop at Cass Vineyard & Winery. All the more reason to go back to the 145-acre sustainable family-owned boutique winery. We started at CASS Café (a USA Today’s Top 10 Best Winery Restaurant) sampling some Harlen Sparking Rosé which was perfectly paired with Ann’s Crab Cake Salad (with avocado of course!). Then it was off to meet Sterling Kragten, the award-winning winemaker, who, like me, is a huge rosé fan! After our chat, we checked out the beautiful shipping crate construction, Geneseo Inn. This luxury boutique Inn, combined with CAMP CASS – an adult “summer” camp includes activities like olive oil pressing, a photo scavenger hunt, archery and horseback riding making CASS the ultimate destination for discerning individuals, couples and groups alike.

https://www.leoleogelato.com Leo Leo Gelato We should all be thankful for the Lekai’s family trips to Italy, which served as inspiration years later for this business venture. While the store is located in Paso Robles Market Walk, you can find Owner/ Master gelatier, Niccoló Lekai’s delicious creamy gelato and sorbet in spots around Paso Robles. We picked ours up at Cass Winery and enjoyed it on our drive (writers note: devoured it) to Booker Vineyard. Available in pint size or a smaller grab and go size with a wooden spoon. I’m partial to pistachio myself, but it is also available in Sea Salt Caramel, Vanilla Bean, Cookies & Cream, Chocolate, Strawberry White Chocolate and Santa Maria Strawberry and Tropical Mango sorbet.

https://www.fishgaucho.com FISHGAUCHO

AMSTRDM is a coffee house by day, serving locally roasted coffee along with brunch and house baked pastries. By night (3 nights a week), it’s a live music lounge complete with a Steinway & Sons Model B Piano. Owned by Paso Robles natives, Corey Jordan and Kate Smith, the AMSTRDM has hosted both jazz and classical artists since opening in July 2020. Corey Jordan’s love for music started at a young age and while he may have had a decade hiatus, he eventually found his way back to the piano keys as a concert pianist, producer, and recording artist. It was only natural for Corey to share his passion with the people in Paso through the universal language of music and food.

You simply can’t visit anywhere along the coastline and not have fresh seafood in some form. FISHGAUCHO brings the flavors of the Baja with an extensive collection of more than 250 tequila and mezcal varieties to sample. This collection gives way to some interesting cocktails, like the featured cocktail of The Tales of the Cocktail (an annual cocktail/spirits trade conference), Flight of the Conchords - a nod to the New Zealand TV Show and of course, includes kiwis. Respectful of the ocean that supplies seafood for the restaurant, you can pick up a stainless-steel straw for $2 if you forgot yours. Executive chef Chris Beckett sources from local farmers and fisherman to create the inspired Mexican menu. Forget your typical flaked fish tacos, I was treated to the freshest, thickest cut, mouth-watering Halibut tacos of my life.

https://www.alchemistsgarden.com The Alchemists’ Garden

https://www.lpcrestaurant.com Les Petit Canailles With international influences and Central California roots, Courtney and Julien Asseo made their way back to Paso Robles and opened their own restaurant in November 2019. Drawing upon their years of expertise and knowledge, including being the Executive Chef of Restaurant Guy Savoy and the bar manager of the now closed DB Brasserie, by Daniel Boulud, the couple opened Les Petites Canailles. Translating to English as “The Little Rascals,” which represents their 3 children, Margaux, Maddox, and Phoenix. You can tell the seasonal menu of French-inspired foods is a Paso favorite, just by the incredibly busy heated patio for a Monday night on an oddly windy day. My recommendation is to arrive on a very empty stomach, so you can order a few appetizers like the ever-popular steak tartare and Spanish octopus with your main.

NUNZI’S RESTAURANT BRINGS FAMILY TRADITION TO MODERN DINING By Harry Brads

A

family’s love of good food and good vibes has resulted in the opening of what is sure to be the hottest new restaurant in Farmingdale, New York. Nunzi’s was founded on a grandfather’s passion for bringing people together around a table and a grandmother’s love of food.

“Here at Nunzis we plan on keeping my grandfather’s traditions alive. You will eat with us, drink with us and laugh with us. Families and friends will all enjoy delicious food, fine drinks, good music and making memories,” states Napolitano.

Owner and operator Michael Napolitano, along with his brother, Vincent Jr., are out to prove that the incredible dishes prepared in the kitchen are only rivaled by Nunzi’s fantastic hospitality, where everyone is treated like a VIP.

A menu that incorporates unique twists on traditional Italian dishes is highlighted by the modern twist on classic dishes, with dishes like Grandma’s Meatballs, Pappardelle & Lamb, Heritage Pork Chop, and Pan Seared Scallops, as well as desserts like Cannoli Cream with Biscotti.

Derek Axelrod, renowned designer, incorporates ‘traditions and respect for the good old days’ into a sleek and modern layout.

Fascinating interpretations that will satisfy the cravings of adventurous foodies, such as one-of-a-kind Limoncello Chicken Wings and a boisterous menu placement of a

In fact, the exceptional time restaurant patrons spend at Nunzi’s is regarded as an immersive cultural experience that warmly embraces the best minute of our lives. open kitchens was hotly contested with the pandemic and guests’ safety a top concern. We racked our brains for a way to show the food in a safe and fun way. With help from our friends and coworkers we found a home with Twitch. The name Show Me Pizza came from describing exactly what we want to do. We want to give people what they want! The fact that you can now see pizza cooking whenever we are open anywhere in the world is a really awesome outcome.”

Order online or enjoy classics like Margherita and Pepperoni on the colorful garden patio. Alternatively, in true Austin fashion, there are several creative highlights sure to please residents, such as the 50 First Dates pizza with onion bechamel, mozzarella, smoked pork, roasted pineapple, thyme, and chili oil; as well as the vegetarian-friendly Grazing G.O.A.T. pizza, which comes with fresh mozzarella, goat cheese, pickled cherry and banana peppers, arugula, pecorino, gaeta olives, e.v.o.o., sea salt, and basil. Demarchelier and partner Dimitri Voutsinas, formerly of Motorino Pizza in New York City, are demonstrating how Show Me Pizza serves the best dishes that satisfy the big Texas appetite for the best cuisine in America in the most fascinating and modern way.

Demarchelier grew up in the hospitality industry, as his parents ran three wildly successful New York restaurants. He went on to manage Brasserie Cognac in Manhattan after learning the business from the ground up as a dishwasher. He ventured out on his own and made a name for himself in the culinary world across the country. Demarchelier has opened a new brewery taproom in California, managed a top cabaret beverage program on the island of St. Barths, and most recently revived his father’s 45-year-old brand and opened the wildly successful Demarchelier restaurant in Long Island, NY’s North Fork. Voutsinas has also brought his native New Yorker passion for pizza to Texas to delight the people of the Lone Star State. Growing up in the hospitality industry gave him an appreciation for classic cooking techniques,

as well as a keen business sense from working in family-owned food businesses. As a top International Culinary Center graduate, his popularity in the food world has earned him a slew of awards, including a spot on Food Network’s “Chopped.” His illustrious reputation landed him management positions in highprofile restaurants such as Chef Marcus Samuelsson’s Harlem restaurant Red Rooster, Bar Boulud, and The Russian Tea Room. Show Me Pizza was born from their desire for perfected recipes and impressive culinary detail. Austin will now be able to enjoy this delectable location for many years to come.

AUDI RS7 2021 By Kyle Edward

W

hen you first behold the 2021 Audi RS7, you can’t help but wonder if you’re looking at a production model or a gallery showpiece. This stunning 4-door sports car comes with a price tag that matches its premium looks, but there’s no denying its instant curb appeal. With a powerful engine, eye-popping exterior features, and superlative on-road performance, the 2021 Audi RS7 has a huge amount to offer its buyers.

resident.com | 65

Jaw-Dropping Exterior

To further enhance performance, you can add options rear-wheel steering, and even ceramic brakes to take both cornering and braking to racetrack levels of quality.

The 2021 RS7 is the first in the second generation of the RS7 model, which is essentially a sportified and poweredup version of the A7, and an even more powerful version of the S7. It competes with the likes of the BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63 S in terms of category, but it’s simpler in many ways in that Audi only makes one version of the car, the RS7 Sportback. The first thing that helps it to compete in this tough category is its breathtaking exterior.

Luxurious Well Built Interior - Yet Slightly Boring For An RS Model Now we come to the interior of the 2021 Audi RS7. It’s a little unfortunate that while updating this second-generation model, Audi didn’t take the opportunity to further upgrade the RS specific interior. Right now, it still feels like you’re in the regular A7, which isn’t inherently bad, but when you’re paying so much extra for the RS7, you might hope for something a bit more unique and characteristic. Sure, the RS7 features exposed carbon fiber trim, beautifully stitched RS seats and a slightly unique steering wheel, but since the RS7 is the most extreme performance model Audi makes outside of the R8, it would be great to have an even higher level of RS interior customization. The interior features Audi’s digital cockpit, as well as dual touchscreens in the center, one for infotainment and the other for environment controls.

Sleek, sexy and bold are three of the best words that immediately come to mind when seeing this car for the first time. It’s not just the commanding and athletic lines, but the fine detailing you find both front and rear. At the front, the RS7 is blessed with a stunning new LED headlights design, which combines particularly well with the RS wheels spanning a very pleasing 22-inches when you opt for the Black Optics package. The standard wheels are almost equally impressive at 21-inches, so you win either way.

Angular air intakes dominate the front grille design, while strong edges outline the rest of the exterior, it creates a presence that is both aggressive and impressive. No one could help but turn their head to look at this RS7 as it rolled down any street or highway.

V8 Powertrain and Performance The 2021 Audi RS7 is powered by a very pleasing 4.0L V8 engine with a twin-turbo setup and a 48-volt hybrid system tied in. All of that is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD from Audi’s signature quattro system. The 4.0L engine outputs a fantastic 591-hp as well as 590 lb-ft of torque. It’s quick off the mark for a 4-door car, too, launching from 0 to 60-mph in a heart-stopping 3.0 seconds. Its top speed is about 190-mph according to Audi. Air suspension comes as standard and features adaptive settings to modify ride quality according to the road. For maximum comfort on the road, we advise that you stick with the standard 21-inch RS wheels. Upgrading to 22-inch wheels looks stunning, but it does naturally have some impact on comfort, as you might expect.

66 | resident.com

Verdict: A Stunning Car and a Fantastic Drive There’s no escaping the fact that this updated RS7 looks the part and is massively fun to drive. BENTLEY BENTAYGA SPEED 2021 By Kyle Edward

S

o recently we took a very special road trip from Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. The trip was a unique experience marrying the natural beauty of the Grand Canyon and everything on the way on Route 66, along with the man-made beauty of our steed or the journey: the 2021 Bentley Bentayga Speed SUV. With nature’s heritage on the road ahead, and automotive heritage on the 4 wheels below us, we set out on what was an incredible journey. Setting Out: Los Angeles and its Automotive DNA It was Ford who was the first auto manufacturer to set up production in Los Angeles. Their LA assembly plant on Olive Street (later moved to E 7th St & Santa Fe Ave.) opened in 1911, and was later relocated to Long Beach in 1930. Other manufacturers followed suit: WillysOverland, Chrysler, Studebaker, GM and many others. LA quickly became a crucial automotive manufacturing hub.

The effect of the manufacturing boom was felt far and wide in Los Angeles and more widely in California. As the automobile became the primary mode of transportation, it also became an important symbol of the American dream: the individual and his/ her private transportation machine, the freedom to go anywhere at any time. LA became a driver’s city with what the industry saw as a healthy hostility to pedestrians. The landscape was littered with a bona fide spaghetti plate of freeways and highways that crisscrossed the city area seemingly at random. For decades to live in Los Angeles is to be a car owner. It’s such a part of life for Angelenos, that one writer for the Smithsonian Magazine pointed out in 2013 that when he rented his 1-bedroom apartment in the city, it came with a parking space, but not a refrigerator. “We only provide the essentials,” said the building manager. If that’s not all the proof one needs of Los Angeles’ status as an automotive city --- perhaps second only to Detroit --- then we don’t know what is. With affluent areas such as Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Malibu and others, it’s the perfect market to test out the new 2021 Bentayga Speed. Destination: Grand Canyon - Natural Wonder of the World The Grand Canyon is among America’s most iconic and most popular natural landmarks. In short, it’s a steep-sided canyon carved into the earth over millions of years by the Colorado River in Arizona. The site attracts about 5 million visitors every year, mostly from the US but about 17 percent of visitors come from overseas to behold the breathtaking natural beauty either from the land or by helicopter flyover. Most visitors to the Grand Canyon are there as part of a wider visit to the Grand Canyon National Park, the Kaibab National Forest, the surrounding Native American Reservations and more great sights. The area is a magnet for geologists too, as the open canyon exposes something like 2 billion years of our planet’s geological history.

The Perfect Steed on the Perfect Road Trip: 2021 Bentley Bentayga Speed The next question is how to get there. We ultimately want to reach Route 66, but that means first taking the I-10 out of LA, passing Mt. San Jacinto State Park and close to Palm Springs. This is the more leisurely part of the trip, a great opportunity to find your feet in your Bentayga, feel the power and speed of the W12 6.0 twin-turbo engine cranking out 626-hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. Power through the Coachella Valley Preserve and Joshua Tree National Park until you reach exit 192. Of course, the above route has already mentioned many great places to make a pit-stop in the Bentayga. Park up in Palm Springs for a deluxe meal, perhaps, or take an afternoon hike in Joshua Tree National Park to catch a stunning sunset. Once you’re back in the Bentayga, and as you segue onto SR 62 heading east, you’ll eventually get to Vital Junction after which you take the US 95 north until you reach the I-40. Where to next? You could backtrack west a short way to visit Mojave National Preserve, or press on to join Route 66. By now you’ll be entranced by the thundering roar of the Bentayga Speed’s engine and exhaust. Just wait until you get to hear it bouncing off the seemingly infinite cavernous walls of the Grand Canyon itself. Route 66 will take you through historic Kingman, the Bearizona Wildlife Park, Kaibab Lake and more. Kingman is known as the heart of Route 66, so is definitely worth some of your time. It is home to the largest remaining stretch of the original route, where you can also visit the Route 66 museum, the Mojave Museum of History and Arts, or check out locally made rum at the Desert Diamond Distillery. It’s an 8-hour trip if you drive without stopping, but you can make it into a perfect long weekend stopping at various locations on the way, before finally reaching the Grand Canyon. When you and your luxurious steed reach that destination, you’ll undoubtedly be humbled by what you see. Lean against your Bentayga Speed and take it all in, and witness nature’s ultimate craft meeting man’s ultimate automotive machine. It’s a match made in heaven.

LUXURY LIVING | RESIDENT safely at speed with confidence. Having said that, it is also equipped with a very pleasing adaptive suspension system that makes even fast-paced rides feel smooth and easy, and almost eliminates any bumps and dips you feel on potholes and speed bumps. It’s well-equipped to perform in a straight line, but in reality it’s not terribly agile. It’s meant to be a more luxurious, comfortable cruiser, and that’s when it’s at its best.

Exterior The exterior hasn’t undergone major changes for the 2021 year but it’s worth mentioning the design. The proportions of the front end, rear end, and side profile are very pleasing, and that’s what you’d expect from the Lincoln designers. No part appears too long, too wide or too bulky. The lines are clean, front end imposing enough and the rear end stylish but subtle. Giving the Nautilus a laid back design focus in-line with the overall mission of the Nautilus.

Interior Now we come to the real substance of the review, and that is the greatly overhauled interior of the Nautilus Black Label. The entire line has received a major interior facelift with superb standard features and a great range of additional options, too. The first thing that strikes you when you sit in the Nautilus Black Label is the all-new dash design with an incredible 13.2” infotainment display running on

LINCOLN NAUTILUS BLACK LABEL By Kyle Edward

L

incoln has already bid farewell to its flagship sedans and now appears to be focused entirely on SUV models. Indeed, they’ve found success in this area, and the Nautilus has been a reliable model, bringing a solid amount of success to the brand over the years. The 2021 Nautilus was announced with some fanfare in late 2020, and delivered a number of changes. Keywords that Lincoln has used include “elevated,” “refined,” and “serene.” We

76 | resident.com

tested the Nautilus Black Label model, which is the very top-end trim to see how it compared to the company rhetoric.

Powertrains The standard powertrain on the 2021 model is a 2.0L four-cylinder engine offering up to 250-hp and paired with a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission in FWD or AWD drivetrains. The 2.0L engine is quite impressive in itself, getting 0-60 in

6.8 seconds, but it’s not as pleasing as the model we tested armed with a much nippier 2.7L turbocharged V6 engine that’ll do the same sprint in just 5.9 seconds. The powertrains are substantial, but we won’t kid ourselves in thinking that the Nautilus Black Label is any kind of sporty SUV. This is a luxury SUV, the larger engine for which allows you much more comfortable highway riding, giving you all the power you could need when passing other cars or merging

Ford Sync 4. It’s intuitive, responsive and attractive, everything you’d want from a great display and the size is phenomenal, making everything not only more visible, but easier to maintain accurate touch as you cycle through options. The system also supports over-the-air software updates and includes voice commands via the “Hey, Lincoln!” trigger phrase. It even works with your smartphone acting as a key, so if you don’t have the key fob, an authorized smartphone will do the trick! But of course not everything positive about the Nautilus is linked to technology. First, the interior is brightened by an optional panoramic sunroof, which really opens up the space nicely. Next, the driver and front passenger are treated to 22-way poweradjustable massage seats, and an available 19-speaker premium audio system from Revel Ultima.

Verdict: A Splendid SUV For Those Seeking Comfort First The fully updated interior is a significant enhancement, with a premium feel and the drive is comfortable when you’re cruising around town or on the highway. It also has more than enough power for highway speeds. As a performer on tight corners that call for agility, however, you won’t find the Nautilus your best ally.
