Playing the percentage game in personal investment F

By Larry Greenfield appreciated notably, but municipal bonds are largely owned by individual investors unlike corporate bonds and because of this are more susceptible to headline risk. For example, when Meredith Whitney proclaimed the pending death of the municipal bond market what followed was what some would regard as being the buying opportunity of a lifetime. Be patient and I am willing to bet there will likely be another opportunity to buy. In the meantime dollar cost averaging in is never a bad strategy. For the unfamiliar reader by dollar cost averaging I mean acquiring over time a portion at a time.

or the retiree and personal investor alike there is a shared problem when approaching one’s ability to maximize their potential return - the search for yield. By this I mean the return, be it an interest or regular dividend payment from an investment expressed as a percentage of the purchase value. Year after year this has become a more vexing problem because of the increasing complexity of investment choices, market volatility and information overload – there is a bewildering array of information resources often giving conflicting advice. There was a time not so long ago that a decent return could be had from ones savings account alone. Today yields below one percent are the norm amongst traditional saving accounts so where does the retiree or personal investor look? Increased yields for both savings and checking accounts can be had from online institutions. Many brick and mortar banks offer better rates for their online savers in return for them foregoing the chat with the bank teller or the free lollipops on display. I presume this is either due to lower operating costs or incentivizing savers not to use a physical bank.

In my opinion those savers willing to take on a little more risk, though potentially a much better return the municipal bond market is worthy of consideration. With yields historically higher when compared to treasuries and offering a tax free yield, municipal bonds are a one of life’s few “no brainer” options. Investors in high tax states in particular find these bonds are even more attractive. Recently the bonds have

For those investors willing take on the risk of equities there are currently juicy yields in the international telecommunications sector. Like most economic sectors they have rallied significantly with stock values appreciating. An IST is an Exchange Traded Fund that provides diversification plus a yield much above average and is comprised of many different stocks. Whatever your strategy whether aggressive or conservative there is always room for yielding instruments in your portfolio, the only question is how much sleep do you wish to lose in return for a more comfortable bed to sleep in…

Shed Inches in Minutes By W. A. Muller

B

ody Contouring by The Lila® Strawberry Laser, a non-surgical and pain-free treatment that can shed inches off the body using low-level (cold) laser technology to melt fat within the fat cells, has been available in London UK for more than a decade, but is relatively new to the U.S. MedSpa44, a new medical spa that provides a wide variety of state-of-the-art laser and skin rejuvenation treatments, is currently the only facility in New York City to offer the Lila Strawberry Laser, which is approved by the FDA for use on the abdomen. In addition to being non-invasive, painless and fast, the Lila Strawberry Laser represents a true innovation, because it does not destroy cells. The process shrinks cells causing inch loss in a more natural, non-invasive approach. According to MedSpa44, some clients who have undergone Lila Strawberry Laser treatments have experienced significant change in short period of time. Each treatment takes a minimum of 10 minutes and no more than 30 minutes. MedSpa44 offers a free consultation and estimate, as well as packages for six to 10 treatments, which are the recommended courses of treatment for best results.

The Lila® Strawberry Laser So how does Lila’s Strawberry Laser Work? When the low-level or cold laser melts the fat within the cell, the fat is released through pores in the cell and is then processed naturally through the lymphatic system, similar to exercise. When a person exercises, triglycerides are released from the fat cells. The more exercise, the smaller the fat cells (adipocytes) become. Lila Body Contouring works in much the same way by pulling the triglycerides from the fat cells. This results in millions of fat cells becoming smaller so inches are reduced. The fat cells are not injured in any way by this process but are merely shrunk in size. It is highly recommended that physical exercise follow treatment to ensure the disposal of the fat efficiently and to prevent re-absorption. Proper nutrition and exercise will enhance results and help prolong them in the longer term. •

When Creams Are Not Enough By John F. Romano, MD

T

he two biggest factors that determine how we age are sun exposure and the genes we inherit.

Genes determine our bone structure as well as how the subcutaneous tissue (the cushion our skin sits on) will change. The sun’s effect on the skin is a slow degrading of our collagen and elastic fibers. The end result is a combination of furrows, wrinkles, brown spots, and spider veins. Currently, there are hundreds of creams on the market that promise everything from removal of blemishes to eradicating wrinkles. In fact, when there are only very mild changes, some creams, Power of Three by Sadick Dermatology Group, will help, but at some point creams are not enough. Over the past ten years the science behind skin rejuvenation has become more sophisticated and has given us many new options. Fillers are the cornerstone in the treatment of facial wrinkles, furrows, and sagging skin. How they work is simple, as we lose the support structures (bone and subcutaneous tissue) the skin folds on itself causing a furrow or a hollow area to occur. By injecting a filler under the skin we are able to plump up the skin and decrease the appearance of aging without surgery. My current filler of choice is hyaluronic acid. This is a naturally occurring substance which is the matrix into which skin cell are imbedded. The most popular brands of this type of filler are the Juvederm products as well as Restylane, Perlane and Belotero. The actual procedure is relatively straight forward when compared to surgery. A numbing gel is applied for 30-40 minutes and the filler is injected through a small needle. The effect is immediate so you can see your results before leaving the office. Though almost any area of the face can be treated the most frequently requested sites are the naso-labial fold (the groove that extends from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth), the hollow areas of the cheeks, and the depressions under the eyes known as the tear troughs. The procedure can be done any time of the year and generally takes about twenty minutes. So when creams are not enough, fillers may be the answer!

THE BEST SUPER NUTRIENTS FOR SUMMER By Karen Lo us As Chief Creative Officer for Kerstin Florian International (KFI), a global leader in the spa industry, one of Charlene Florian’s many contributions include research and development of ingredients, new products and treatments.

A

We caught up with Charlene at The Global Wellness Day at Richmond Nua’s Destination Spa in Lake Sapanca in Turkey. We asked her about key supplements and super nutrients for health and for healthy skin. Magnesium? Why is it so important for the body? Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body. It’s responsible for over 300 enzymatic processes in the body related to locomotion, sleep, depression, anxiety and headaches. 70-80% of people in North America are deficient. It’s essential for health and skin. It’s great taken transdermally and internally. We have an incredible Mineral Wellness Soak rich in Magnesium and 60 other essential minerals and trace elements. Aside from phytoplankton, are there other examples of plant and marine technology that you would recommend? I highly recommend Spirulina and Chlorella. Both are excellent examples of algae rich in protein, vitamins, chlorophyll and essential minerals and trace elements. We have a great Rejuvenating Spirulina Masque that helps cleanse and nourish mature skin with clay to help refine pores and the algae to nourish and hydrate. How do you protect yourself from radiation? Do you wear or use any EMF protectors?

28 • Resident July 2014

The research into Earthing or grounding has convinced me to connect barefoot to the earth whenever I can. I have grounding sheets on the beds in my house and an EMF protector on my cell phone. I also take iodine and herbs including ginseng. Reishi? That’s one mushroom that many of us are familiar with. What other mushrooms should we be paying attention to? Chaga, Mitake, Shitake, Cordeceps and Agaricus are among the noble mushrooms that have a strong effect on our immune system. You spoke about Chinese herbal tonics. What are some of your favorite tonics? One of my favorite tonic blends includes Ron Teegaurden’s Super Pill 2 (includes Resveratrol, Astragalus, Rhodiola, He Shou Wu, Ginseng). I also love the Goji and Schizandra Drops. They are great for the skin. How have you worked Vitamin C into your skin care line? Vitamin C is a great antioxidant both internally and externally. It helps stimulate collagen production and helps prevent hyperpigmentation. Vitamin C is very unstable so it’s important to use a form that is bioavailable. Our Serum C+ Infusion is based on tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, a lipid soluble form, which is powerful, and bioavailable. Great internal forms of C include Camu Camu Berry, kakadu plum, goji berry and acai.

What other super nutrients have made their way into the Kerstin Florian Skincare? Coenzyme Q10, aloe vera, spirulina, ginger, chlorella, coconut, mineral salts, haberlea rhodopensis (adaptogen) to name just a few. What’s the next cutting edge supplement or super nutrient? I think the future is about revisiting the knowledge of ancient cultures who are so connected to the plant world. There are amazing super herbs and super nutrients all over the world. Our goal is to continue to discover them and formulate them into beautiful skincare products.

Charles James… Beyond Fashion By Isaiah Negron

T

his spring, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute introduced Charles James: Beyond Fashion, an exhibit showcasing the haute couture icon’s most illustrious creations. Fashion expert and art aficionado Michele Gerber Klein, who studied James’ work for years, comments, “He was a true original. Sometimes I imagine him as a mad scientist inventing these perfectly calibrated shapes,” she said with a laugh. “He is mythic. He made only, perhaps, 1000 matrix designs in his life with which he managed to influence a vast span of sartorial history. But before this show revived him, James himself seemed to simply have disappeared - like Camelot.” Charles James: Beyond Fashion, the largest and most comprehensive retrospective of James’s work to date was organized by Harold Koda, the Fashion Institute’s longtime head curator. “The Met did it very well. The clothes, literally and figuratively, stand on their own,” Michele remarks. “The way the dresses are exhibited defines and explains them. Harold managed to retain the purity of James’ identity and create an intimate context an audience can relate to very well.” The exhibit runs through August 10th. Michele Gerber Klein found her calling in the fashion industry by learning to see at an early age, growing up surrounded by the fashion worlds of New York and Paris. After ‘apprenticing’ at companies like Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman, she went to work with her friend Joan Vass. “Our premise was that dressing well was about taste, not dollars.” Through licensing, Michele was able to co-create a $60 million company, which she named joan vass usa. “I was just good at fashion. I could predict it. And I was young and so enthusiastic,” she remembers. “It wasn’t easy to place Joan. She was too smart and too intellectual, not to mention opinionated. She was art world ‘royalty’. Her husband had been de Kooning’s close friend, which seemed to set her apart from Seventh Avenue. But the license was a very big deal. I loved her. She was true personality.” Michele’s articles about her artist friends for BOMB and The Brooklyn Rail have been translated into several languages, taught at Columbia, archived by the Getty and quoted by scholars. “I married into the art world and I wanted to learn. Again, I started by looking,” she says. “Looking, for me, is a real pleasure. Art and fashion coexist in my mind.” A member of the Board of the Couture Council at FIT, Michele will continue her support of unique visions by writing a book about Charles James. Among the materials she will draw from are the interviews done by James’ friend R. Couri Hay and filmed by Anton Perich. These interviews will be broadcast on Public Access TV this July. “Fashion is everywhere. If you want to experience fashion, all you have to do is see.”. metmuseum.org/exhibitions/listings/2014/ charles-james-beyond-fashion

Dale Noelle TRUE Model Management By Isaiah Negron

E

ntrepreneur, fashionista and model agency owner Dale Noelle has been one of her generation’s most successful and sought after fitting models. She has worked with the world’s most important fashion designers, including Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein and Oscar de la Renta. Luxury European brands and clothing manufacturers turned to Noelle to check the drape and visual appearance of garments that were sold to consumers for nearly two decades. She was one of FORD’s top models from the early 90’s to 2008, posing for dozens of mass retail companies such as the GAP, and Limited. “My love of the fashion industry began during my childhood while spending time at my father’s clothing factories. I learned to create and tailor my own designs as well as work with different teams,” she remembers. “After obtaining my degrees in business and marketing, I worked as a clothing production manager, sales representative and designer. I was also an owner of a clothing company license before finding my calling as a fitting model.” Using her experience and knowledge of the modeling industry, Noelle founded TRUE Model Management, a full service management company that represents all sizes and categories of fitting models while embracing a vast network of clients to connect models with showroom, trade show, print, runway and commercial talent jobs. “We find the best fit for both our models and our clients,” Noel says. “I do not believe in extreme standards for anyone. At TRUE, we guide models to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle and physique that they can happily maintain long-term with minimal stress on the body.” Though headquartered in New York City, TRUE represents talent throughout the world and has close ties with many of the most influential names in fashion including Tommy Hilfiger, DKNY and Victoria’s Secret. “The misconception is that models are superficial and that they are all are super thin. In reality, many models are well educated, philanthropic, healthy and athletic,” she states. “At TRUE, we genuinely care about our models and their well-being. We work with models to enhance their inner and outer natural beauty and do not force them to fit particular criteria.” Noelle originally created TRUE to manage her own career, but clients repeatedly requested her to provide referrals for additional models. “Being a model, you have to be a liaison and work with a number of different teams,” explains Noelle. “I love connecting people and helping them reach their goals and dreams.” She now manages the entire team at TRUE while overseeing the many details that go into making TRUE the success it is for models and clients, standing by her company’s philosophy that “TRUE Fits the Best.” truemodel.net

everyday pieces that sparkle and shine to breathtaking statement jewelry. Bling Jewelry was conceptualized by Elena Castaneda, a fashion industry professional who saw a gap in the market for a fashion jewelry site that any woman could shop. Her first venture was Castaneda’s, a high-end women’s specialty store in New York City that she owned for nearly a decade. Her next venture was to launch New York Image Consultant alongside Amanda Sanders, which gave her an opportunity to work with some of the world’s most influential clients, stylists, designers and entertainers. With opportunities in E-commerce on the rise, Elena knew the timing was right to marry her fashion expertise and business acumen with the Internet. So in 2008, out of her tiny apartment in New York City and with just $10,000 of her own capital, Elena started BlingJewelry. com. In just six years the destination website for beautiful but affordable jewels has grown into a multimillion dollar business that has seen substantial growth despite the economic recession. • For more information: blingjewelry.com

Summer Hair Tips with Ryan Darius By Hillary Latos

H

airstylist to the stars, Ryan Darius is known for his dynamic approach to styling hair. With his vivacious personality and innate talents as a hairstyling guru, he’s quickly become the go to personality for hair care advice on national talk shows, and has styled editorial features and commercials and currently stars in the Logo TV’s hit reality show, The A List. Here we ask Ryan for the latest trends in haircuts and color, and tips on how to get the beachy look without damaging your hair. What are the new trends for summer hair? The trend now is your natural texture, air drying is in, and finding new ways to put your hair up to flatter yourself whether its half up or half down or rocking your natural curl in an up do that’s what’s trending. It’s kind of like the easy breezy hair that still looks chic and sexy. What about cuts? Right now we are seeing a lot of women cutting their hair, whether it’s a bob or a lob- a longer bob above the collarbone, it can still be put up into a nub for the beach or a workout, but it’s shorter and cropped or choppy. What about color trends? I still see ombre happening but it’s not on trend now. Women in NYC have gone back to classic chic color. A lot of that goes with their skin tones and natural pigments, baby blonde highlights, rich

dark chocolate browns, and for reds we’re seeing a crisp carroty red because its lighter and summery. Are there any must have products? We love Oribe, they have a great dry texture spray that’s great for the beachy look and I like to mix it with the après beach which is their wave & shine spray. I love to mix a matted dry texturizer with just a hint of shine, so it’s not too dry or too shiny. There’s also an Oribe gold lust line that will keep your hair healthy and shiny and not so damaged over the summer. Are there any tips to combat damage from summertime activities? I recommend getting a spray bottle and fill it with ¼ of your favorite conditioner and the rest with water, shake it up and leave it overnight. Now you have your own travel size leave in conditioner for your beach bag. When you get to the beach or pool it’s great to use a little leave in conditioner just before you jump in. I would recommend also swimming with your hair in a braid, whatever is wrapped or tangled in your bun or braid is protected with the leave in conditioner, this also helps with combatting the effects of chlorine. I also tell my clients don’t go fully under until you’re ready to go home but on your last trip into the water then dive in, then the salt and chlorine from the water won’t sit and marinate your hair strands. While the zeitgeist kept mouthing Coco Chanel’s ‘you can never be too rich or too thin’ mantra, and while the paragons of style confirmed that ‘natural beauty’ was the result of a highly unnatural means of controlling one’s appetite, Carol Alt – arguably the world’s first officially recognized Supermodel – was in the throes of a life-altering reevaluation. Unwilling to settle for a lifetime of self-induced starvation, Alt went in search of the contemporary cosmopolitan’s Holy Grail: a way to remain sated, healthy, fit and spiritually sound without sacrificing 24 hours a day in pursuit of that goal. As Alt’s much acclaimed series, The Healthy You and Carol Alt, on Fox attests, she has found the elusive chalice. Although her vivacious appearance suggests that she has been dipping her mythical cup into the Fountain that had once been eagerly sought by Ponce de León, it seems clear that her youth is the result of insight rather than divine intervention; while her drug of choice is: information and more information.

Charles and Alix

Granting the Resident magazine an exclusive interview, Alt elucidated on her career and its inception. Unlike many today, Alt’s foray into modeling wasn’t driven by an insatiable urge to be famous at all costs: “Modeling wasn’t something I especially set out to do. I initially did it because I thought that it might be a good way to help my dad, who was a firefighter, pay for my education. I was waitressing in this steak and beer joint on the Island – a regular stopover between the City and the Hamptons - when this photographer came in, and said I should consider making a call at Ford (Ford’s modeling agency). I knew he was legit because he told me to contact the agency rather than him. For the record, young models do need to be wary of random people introducing themselves as photographers. Funnily enough, it wasn’t until the guys at my workplace noticed me on the cover of Vogue and suggested that I might want to give up my “lucrative waitressing gig”’ that I even thought of quitting my day job. Needless to say, I soon ended up doing everything from Mademoiselle to Glamour to Cosmo to Harper’s Bazaar.”

That eating disorders went relatively unnoticed by all but a few academic researchers and psychiatric specialists through the early nineties is indicative of just how acceptable it was to think of emaciation as a ‘natural part’ of the beauty industry. Alternative lifestyle diets were considered nonsensical while devastating quick fix crash diets were advocated on network television. Though Karen Carpenter’s death in 1983 briefly stirred those like Cherry Boone into publicly addressing their own afflictions, there was little in the way of education for the many who suffered from bouts of starvation coupled with binge eating.

myself and putting my health at risk and I wasn’t even looking my best. People gave lots of advice and after a while, I was pretty resistant to most of the noise. But then, suddenly, I was put into contact with this amazing doctor –a man renowned for curing much more fatal sicknesses - and, the long and short of it is that after speaking to him and following his advice, I realized I didn’t have to starve at all. I could eat as much as I wanted of raw food and never have to worry about getting fat or sick. The pain of total abstention had ended and I could freely indulge my appetite as long as I chose raw foods… it was that simple. And all of it came down to having the proper information. The doctor had given me the most valuable thing a person can give: information. Healthy information; information that saved my life. Since 1996 to this day, it is this information that has allowed me to thrive. And this information I wish to impart to others.” As a living paean to youthfulness wrought of understanding, Carol devotes a great deal of her time to presenting experts to the world at large: “Since I’m not a doctor, I often bring those best capable of explaining things on air… I am so very grateful that Fox has allowed me to do the kind of show where I get to give all the information I’ve absorbed over the last 17 years back to a large number of people. And since I’m always in the process of learning myself, I find it fulfilling to share my findings with others”. When asked about how this form of celebrity compares to her days posing in front of a camera, Alt gives way to her infectiously carefree laugh and states, “The modeling and acting I did was pretty egocentric – actually, the whole field is and, at the time, maybe it helped me compensate for not having been the center of attention as a kid. But once I accrued a certain amount of money and had traveled, my desires shifted. I wanted a home, a family; I wanted to work with people who knew me. I wanted to be able to help others as I had been helped.” Alt added that those were all the magazines in those days and, in her inimitably candid style, went on to highlight a paradox of which I was duly aware – namely, that there were far fewer publications back then despite the fact that people read far more print than they do today. Alas tis’ true, ‘where have all the readers gone, long time watching cable…?” “Precisely,” reaffirmed Alt who knows that although the books she’s written may speak tomes on nutrition, TV allows her to communicate with a far vaster audience. Prancing about with more energy than nearly all her twenty-year old modeling counterparts, the ebullient Carol Alt informed me how the woman who had twice graced the coveted Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition, hosted TV and radio, starred

in over 50 movies, won numerous awards in Europe while being the first ever Super Elite model who started the Supermodel trend with John Casablanca, nearly destroyed her own health prior to finding her salvation in raw foods.

Dividing her time between Nassau County and Tribeca, when Carol isn’t working 24/7 on her highly informative weekly show, she’s fine-tuning a line of new products that include everything from slenderizing underwear with botanicals to sunglasses.

“Being from a working class family in Queens, in my teens I ate wheat, gluten, sugar, and the normal junk many of us stuff ourselves with. By 16, I was working in a Bakery; and by the time I started modeling I was told I needed to lose 15 pounds. So I began to starve myself… actually, to the point of fainting. At one point, I was pretty much afraid of putting anything in my mouth. And, after all that time of utter abstention and useless suffering, I still overheard someone say, “She’s not in bathing suit condition.” Well, at that point, my entire world unraveled. I was in my 30’s; and 12 years of starving

“Where will I be in 5 years…? What will I work on next…? I’m not even sure I could answer where I’ll be next week, let alone after a year. But what I do know is that I will be feeling a lot younger, happier and healthier than I ever did in my mid-20’s. And it is really my diet and lifestyle that has made that possible. And it is this feeling of fulfillment and general well being that I wish to go on sharing with others.” If joie de vivre, good health and great looks are validations for the value of a theory, then it is evident that the Carol Alt alternative to fad diets is hard to dispute.

s the mellifluous voice of Ariana DiLorenzo nonchalantly scampers across the unmistakably jagged line “Just because I’m in your bed doesn’t mean I’m yours”, one suspects that the identity of the culprit being addressed could as easily have been all of pop music as the lover alluded to in the song.

empathy and grace – along with humility, rare commodities in the music industry. If you’ve ever seen Ariana perform you can imagine what it’s like consorting with her - alert blue eyes hurtling towards you like roving twin planets; while her otherwise beatific face appears as though it were on loan from J. W. Waterhouse’s study of Dante’s Beatrice. Her unrehearsed responses are, likewise, an oddly entertaining composite of grace, inventiveness, rhapsodic asides and sheer whimsy. Like Janelle Monae and Azealia Banks who had both attended drama and musical academies, Ariana is conscious of the influence that theater exerts over her work: “Certainly, my studies have had an effect on my approach – It’s not just about the stage presence but about the creative vision behind it. My familiarity with different arts helps when doing both music videos and shows. I get to think in conceptual terms rather than doing a straightforward visual rendering of the lyrics. It gives me the vocabulary for collaboration. Whether that means working with the director on a storyboard, or coming up with a treatment, I remain an integral part of the creative process rather than just a performer.” It was this profound understanding of other arts that had landed Ariana’s music on a runway show with renowned London-based designer Ashley Isham. That Isham’s admiration for Ariana’s music was reciprocated when she chose his dress for her own video attests to the ongoing give and take between seemingly disparate fields. But whether she is the catalyst or the one being catalyzed by her encounters, Ariana admits to the serendipitous nature of her partnerships: “we simply decided- hey, you know what - let’s do something really fun together… After which, more often than not, you tend to blend the aesthetics.”

After all, although Ariana may have seduced the fickle genre with catchy hooks, her moody chord progressions clearly demonstrate that she won’t be owned by it. Although the affair between her and a mainstream audiences is looking ever more steamy, her indie-edged arrangements and her unique juxtaposition of rambunctious phrasing with a melancholic undertone make a good case for her relationship with pop being no more than opposites attracting. As sultry meets sophisticated and earnest meets impish, one gets the definite sense that the fashion savvy 24 year old Tischgraduate behind Ariana and the Rose will be

having a myriad of flings with different music styles before settling down in a comfortable pop-friendly bed. Since the native New Yorker was on a brief break from her recent Gay Pride Tour, I took the opportunity to conduct an informal têteà-tête. Ariana’s demeanor is the type that immediately puts one at ease - albeit in that disquieting sort of way that humility by highly attractive artists has a way of doing. She possesses a quiescent form of intensity – one that makes me wonder whether it was the result of having studied journalism herself or simply

While themes are important to Ariana, she, nevertheless, eschews superimposing a contrived theme-based structure onto her albums. “Don’t get me wrong,” explains Ariana,”I absolutely love Janelle Monae’s concept album about the alien girl. I mean she has incredibly accessible songs like Tightrope and still manages to get that big cinematic idea out. And while I envision doing something of the sort in the future, for now I’m primarily focused on the subject matter. In each song, I ask myself: ‘What is it that you’re really trying to say’. Well, what I’ve discovered is that I keep circling back to the same questions that I’ve struggled with myself: finding out who I am, how to love and how to give and receive, how to get back up when I fall; and mostly, finding some middle ground without feeling like I’ve compromised my values. So, yes, my

material is highly personal but it’s also general enough for most young people to identify with. It’s similar to the issues in the hit series Girls, similar to issues bubbling in social media, and - from a slightly more academic perspective – it’s the very same stuff that even the New Yorker is writing about. Like I learned as a journalist, you write about what you know and if you do it well enough there’ll be an audience out there for it.” When asked what that audience is, and whether she feels an urge to dumb down her material in order to hit this ‘golden middle’, she unequivocally responds: “No. I come from the simple belief that pop music and pop culture doesn’t have to be dumbed down. My natural inclination is to be accessible without diluting the message. So far I haven’t had to hold anything back. .American audiences – and especially British ones – crave reality: Adelle, Florence and the Machine, Lorde… A song like Royals got through precisely because Ella (Lorde) sang it exactly how she meant it and it spoke to people. No one would have thought ‘ooh this is a perfect pop formula’; but when it came out, suddenly it was. We need to start giving the audience more credit. People want real in other walks of life. What would make anyone assume they don’t want it in their music”. Her dream team…? With irrepressible enthusiasm, she names the much lauded grey eminence Rick Rubin and the compositional genius, Sia – both of whom had, incidentally, been part of Benny Blanco’s recent line-up. Launching into a paean, Ariana wants to make sure I am familiar with all those from whom she has gleaned insight: David Kahne (Regina Spektor’s producer) is a “singer’s producer – meticulous with arrangements and phrasing”, Charlie Arme – Ariana’s very proactive A&R - has not only managed Elle Eyre (of Waiting All Night) but has also set co-writing sessions for Ariana with the highly talented Martin Sjøle in Norway, and those like Oliver Nelson have remixed her work, allowing Ariana to see her songs in a new light. In response to what direction she’s headed in and what genres she hopes to incorporate, Ariana answers as if from a reverie: “Ethereal, sweeping soundscapes”, she proclaims, “Something along the lines of what Imogen Heap does; but bringing that vibe into the more structured playing field of pop.” Was this the next genre fated to crawl into Ariana’s pop-loving embrace? Of course – as every fan knows by now – regardless what genre ends up in Ariana’s bed for the night, the single lady (and singular artist) would always remain an entity very much its own.

TRAVEL

The many mosques that dotted the busy hills on either side of the Bosphorus were another sign that we had clearly arrived in Istanbul and not Northern California. In search of the famous Blue Mosque, I pointed to a prominent mosque on the hill, asking our guide Atakan, “What mosque is that?” “There are 3,000 mosques in Istanbul. I can’t name them all.” The Turks are very direct and unapologetic. As we got to town, we drove up the very busy Istiklal Street. Atakan said, “This is the busiest shopping street in Istanbul. No cars are allowed here.” I was confused as we drove through throngs of pedestrians, until he added, “We’re special. Your hotel is here.” The Hotel Richmond Istanbul is the only hotel on Istiklal Street. Taking in the twinkling expanse of the city at night, which is over 2,000 square miles, from the terrace of the hotel’s Leb-I-Derya Restaurant certainly made us feel special. It was a warm Turkish welcome, complemented by local wines, marinated salmon with horseradish foam, goat cheese brulee and walnut flavored eggplant. We started our local tour in the morning in the new section of the city, which is where

66 • Resident July 2014

our hotel was. It was a more contemporary, less touristy and gentler dip in to Istanbul. There are several bohemian enclaves throughout, areas of the city that were once too dangerous to visit. Similar to the gentrification that has taken place in many

American cities, they are largely inhabited by artists today. In the Sepa neighborhood the streets are filled with bright graffiti art. Galata and Cukurcuma streets in particular, are teeming with galleries, cafes, vintage shops, chic boutiques and hip, local restaurants and bars.

.

We finished with visits to The Grand Bazaar and the Spice Market, which was great for people watching, as it was more locals than tourists. We had a traditional Turkish and Ottoman Empire inspired lunch at Nars Restaurant in town. Then we may have had the sexiest dinner to date at Suada. Suada is a private club on a private island between two continents; Asia and Europe. The only way to arrive is by boat, many of which are private yachts. It was a more sophisticated slice of Ibiza and the perfect place to take in your last tipple in Istanbul.

.

After our busy urban adventure, we did what many jetsetting local Turks do. We went to Lake Sapanca to finish our visit. Sapanca has been compared to Italy’s Lake Cuomo and is often called The Hamptons of Turkey. Regardless of the comparisons, it is an idyllic spot. The area boasts a bit of culture and history as well. The Mevlevi Museum’s name is in honor of the 13th century sufi mystic and poet Rumi, called Mevlana (Our Leader) by his disciples. Dervish history, artifacts, clothing and accessories fill the museum. The semahane (whirling dervish hall) was erected in 1491 and is home to rare dervish ceremonies today. The Galata Tower is a great way to take in the city, the bridges and the many mosques. The more intimate Museum of Innocence, named after the novel by the Turkish Nobel Prize-winning author Orhan Pamuk, is a fascinating reflection of his novel, the local culture, class and recent gender politics. Lunch on the Bosphorus in the well-heeled Beyoglu section of the city, at Istanbul’s Modern Museum of Art, properly whet our appetites for the private yacht ride that followed. It was the single best way to take in the city, as we jetted along the Boshporus on both the Asia and the European side of the city. It can be confusing, but both sides are Turkey, yet each belongs to a different continent. No passport is necessary to go between the two. On the European side we passed the posh waterfront Four Seasons and Kempinski hotels. We managed to capture the circle of life with a funeral and a wedding taking place, side by side. We also saw the Rumeli Fortress and castle, which dates back to 1452 with it’s Ottoman architecture. The 19th century Summer Palace or the Beylerbeyi Palace, a part of the second Ottoman empire, is on the Asian side. Both sides are filled with waterfront mansions with re-

tail tags ranging between 20 to 65 million USD. Dinner that night at The Poseidon Restaurant on the Bosphorus was an easy and sexy extension of our day, as yachts dropped off and picked up jetsetters right from their waterfront tables. The following day in the historic district of the city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, was a full one. The history of Constantinople as it was once called, was starting to sink in. Istanbul has always been an important city, as it was strategically positioned on the Silk Road. The Bosphorus, which separates the Sea of Marmara (The Mediterranean) and the Black Sea, was and is one of the world’s busiest waterways. With all of this importance, Turkey has seen it’s share of empires from the Roman to the Byzantine and Latin Empire, when Christianity was on the rise. Collectively they ruled between 330 - 1453 when the Ottoman Empire took over, transforming Turkey into an Islamic stronghold. All of this together with a lot of biblical history is revealed in the old city tour of it’s key attractions; The iconic Blue Mosque with it’s blue tiles, The Hippodrome, The Topkapi Palace with the Ottoman Empire’s crown jewels, which blow the Brits baubles away and of course the Basilica of Hagia Sophia. The Basilica was most interesting as the church was built by the Byzantines in 537, then taken over by the Ottomans in 1453 when it became a mosque. It is a museum

We checked in to Richmond Nua Wellness Spa, Turkey’s only destination spa and Spafinder’s Readers Choice Award in 2013. Richmond Nua’s own Belgin Aksoy has created a complete oasis with a spa that goes above and beyond steam, sauna and plunge pools. Aside from stunning aesthetics, that are Architectural Digest worthy, there’s an herbal, osman, and salt inhalation steam bath and a gorgeous loft sauna that is by far the hottest place I have ever been. There are cold aqua caves, ice grottos and salt pools to plunge into and a series of relaxation rooms, if looking to dip deeper into your decompression. Morning yoga, hikes, private trainers and the Austrian Hypoxi program, where you can lose a full size in four days, are but a few of the ways to dive in to health at Nua. If movement isn’t your thing, a hammam or an endless list of spa treatments with Kirsten Florien products are available. Laying by the pool and eating their Beautifood spa menu is another easy, breezy step towards wellness. Global Wellness Day, which was spearheaded by Belgin herself, was celebrated at Richmond Nua while we were there. San Miguel de Allende is a tourist destination, artist colony and an authentically romantic Mexican town all rolled into one. It’s a place where expats and locals mingle together. In fact, out of the total population of around 80,000 in this city the expat number is estimated at around 12,000. It’s a safe and charming colonial city where cobblestone streets and lively festivals make for a vacation of a different kind. Calling it an architectural utopia is an understatement, as you could walk for endless hours admiring the many ornate and elaborate doorways, baroque and neo-classical colonial structures and beautifully manicured landscapes that adorn this city. It sits at approximately 6,000 feet in the mountains of central Mexico just north of Mexico City and easily accessible via a connecting flight through Mexico City into Léon or a 3-hour drive from the Mexico City airport via a modern and safe highway. San Miguel de Allende’s beginnings date back to 1542 when a Franciscan Monk named Fray Juan de San Miguel came upon the town and named it San Miguel. Later, in 1826 the town was renamed San Miguel de Allende after General Ignacio Allende who was instrumental in the Mexican War leading to Mexico’s Independence. At the center of town is its main plaza, known as El Jardín (The Garden) where fireworks, festivals and wedding proces-

sions are an almost daily occurrence. The main church and San Miguel’s iconic landmark, La Parroguia, is a towering structure dating back to the 17th century, although its neo-gothic exterior was added in the 19th century while the remainder of the building is baroque in style. It’s bell towers begin chiming early morning and continue to beckon you all throughout the day, as do the many churches in the town’s historic center. The city is filled with quaint restaurants and cantinas but there is also an established element of sophistication here. I was in town to attend an annual art festival known as “SMART,” where art, music and food come together to celebrate local and international modern artists. There are restaurants galore here ranging from very local cuisine to international fare. “El Correo” served the best tortilla soup in town (or anywhere, in my opinion) and Moxi in the Hotel Matilda satisfied my inner foodie with an elegant farm-to-table menu including locally sourced organic cheeses and meats. Hotels range from the uber chic Hotel Matilda, with a beautiful outdoor pool, contempo-

rary decor and laid-back spa, to the traditional and classic Casa Sierra Nevada. The Rosewood Hotel, the new “grand” hotel in town has a rooftop restaurant serving tapas with a spec-

tacular view of the city and a wine cellar paying homage to Frida Kahlo. On the boutique side, El Masón easily owns the trendiest and coolest lounge in town but my favorite boutique hotel had to be El Palomar just off the main square (see full review at end of article). You could shop for hours on end here as well. Art galleries, craft stores and clothing boutiques are all bustling, especially on weekends when the town really comes alive. And if it’s adventure you’re looking for, San Miguel serves up

a hefty dose of hiking, hot air ballooning and horseback riding all within a 20-minute drive to Coyote Canyon. In essence, San Miguel de Allende might just be the perfect destination for families, honeymooners and singles. It’s the perfect city for anyone looking to take his or her Mexican holiday to the next level.

With an open-air courtyard at its center, the surrounding rooms offer a chic and comfortable stay with interesting design elements thrown in. You might encounter a sink sitting atop an antique bike in one room while another room, one of their suites, offers a luxurious stone whirlpool. You’ll be hardpressed to find views at any other boutique hotel in town comparable to those in some of the rooms here. With just 10 rooms in total, the service is both attentive and polite, respecting your space yet always available for prompt service. And while the rooms and courtyard are by far the best I encountered during my stay, it’s the rooftop that really takes this gem of a hotel to the next level. With a small infinity pool and full service bar, the sweeping views of the San Miguel de Allende from this rooftop are nothing short of spectacular. It’s the perfect retreat to cool off after a long day of touring through the city while offering outstanding sunset views. El Palomar is definitely paradise found in this magical city.

After all, the super private enclave called Windemere on the sliver of a British West Indian island called Eleuthera was a long time favorite escape of Prince Charles and Princess Diana of Wales, and we all know how that marriage held up. And before that ill-fated couple it was also a haven for the even more ill-starred couple of Wallis Simpson and Edward Windsor aka The Duke of Windsor and the ex-king of England who abdicated with the famous words, “I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility this to discharge my duty as King Edward VII” and then fled to the Bahamas; there is a long distinguished of ‘conscious uncoupling’ involving this Caribbean archipelago and so it should have come as no surprise that our Princess Gwyneth would have sought to add to history by making their very first appearance after the announcement of their impending divorce and the avalanche of publicity, they could never ever have imagined that followed. The place they choose was at a tiny beach side shack of a restaurant called Tippy’s’ in the tiny hills of historic Governor’s Harbor on the island of Eleuthera. And so it was that I was overcome with a keen desire to visit this place and discover it for myself. The islands original Greek name in fact spells freedom; it is 110 miles long and two miles wide and was first colonized in the early 17th Century by Puritans fleeing religious persecution. Seven days after their fateful appearance at Tippy’s and a fabulous night spent on the

beach of Emerald Bay in Nassau attending an unforgettable junkanoo party hosted by the Bahamian Prime Minister Hon. Gladstone Perry for the Hollywood movie producer Will Packer, GW arrived bleary-eyed very early the next foggy morning. The property, when I finally arrived, was the most luxurious hotel I have seen in some time. It is a five-star hotel called the Cove – Eleuthera. More on that later. The very next morning at about noon I asked Mr. Amos Johnson to pick me up at my hotel in his white mini-van taxi cab and take me to Tippy’s for lunch. As we approached the crescent turn of the charm-

ing and very ancient Governors Harbour and turned left up the hill from the distinctly colonial seaside village the architecture changes dramatically. It is soon clear we are in the “Beverly Hills of Eleuthera.” The tiny concrete homes of the lumpenproletariat now give way to beautiful tothe-manor-born neo-colonial manses of Pyfroms Lane with all the required signature accouterments. The expansive wraparound verandahs which drape beautiful plantation-style homes preening in the usual pastiche of poppy Caribbean colors beguile state of the art modern homes in every way yet exquisitely capture the elegance, sophistication and charm of an era

The restaurant was packed to the rafters and the house band Big Black Belly + The Haitian Sensation was, by 8pm, crooning out its staple cover classics such as Bob Marley anthems – ‘Three Little Birds’ and ‘No Woman No Cry.’ They certainly didn’t order the signature house cocktail called ‘Tippy Sunshine’ which is basically a rum punch because Gwynnie insisted on bringing her own bottle of white even though the chalk board

The wine board had a few good choices here including the very fine ‘Whispering Angel’ white at $62 or the Zenato Pinot Grigiot, but Gwynnie brought her own bottle of white wine. They only had to look across the shanty restaurant to gasp at the broken piano hanging behind the bar which “was the very same piano Princess Diana used to play on whenever she was in residence at Windemere,” Big E continued.

The very next day they sought solace at the most private and newest and the only GW can fairly declare five-star resort addition to this British West Indian archipelago called The Cove Eleuthera which is without doubt the latest under-the-radar celebrity escape and the creation of the rakish New Orleans hotelier Sidney Torres IV. The most sought after photograph in the world right now is one of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin post divorce, but they had to have felt a sense of calm and pleasure looking about this simply exquisite and uber-private property filled with other equally very rich and posh guests. The kids swam in the infinity pool they dined a deux and lounged in the flawless, modern and spare all white airy lobby library impeccably curated with a range of the finest coffee table books. In fact, one cannot help but note on arrival at the tiny check in booth, the prominent placements of lush coffee table books such as “Vanity Fair Portraits-A Century Of Iconic Images” by Graydon Carter or “Island Hotel Stories” by Francesca Matteoli or classics like “Enduring Style – Gary Cooper” by Ralph Lauren, Maria Cooper and Bruce Weber. The Cove Eleuthera has indeed become the latest celebrity refuge a few days before Gwynnie & Chris sought solace here, so too had the rambunctious teenage pop star Justin Bieber who in fact rented out half of the entire 40 acres property for his entourage and him. In fact, the ever sultry country superstar Shania Twain in fact had lunch next to GW. For more information: thecoveeleuthera.com Resident ResidentJuly July 2014 • 77

Casual Opulence By Karen Lo us

C

oined the gateway to the Caribbean by the Brits back in the day, Antigua maintains it’s sexy island allure to this day. The capital city of Saint Johns sees its share of ships, mainly cruise ships today, while English Harbor plays host to jetsetters that prefer to pop in on private yachts or sailing vessels. Regardless of how you arrive, you won’t ever want to leave Antigua. If looking to stay on land at this West Indies enclave, the Hermitage Bay will certainly up the opulence ante. Rest assured, the spoiled scenario quickly kicks in upon arrival as Hermitage Bay’s attentive staff whisks you away from the airport in their luxury 4x4. We seamlessly settled into our suite in less than an hour. The luxurious ride to the airport was an easy breezy 35 minutes away.

Conveniently located in a hidden cove, Hermitage Bay feels miles away from civilization. As we lazily soaked in the island ambiance on our private deck, we could see the silhouettes of Montserrat, Nevis and St. Kitts in the distance. If we were to miss the modern madness or we needed a break from the serene silence, the hub of Jolly Harbor was but a quick ten minutes. It’s abuzz with its shops and local restaurants.

The Suite Life It certainly is a sweet suite life at Hermitage Bay with 25 individual suites. Whether you stay in one of the 8 individual beachfront suites or one of the 17 suites that dot the lush hillside, your island oasis looks and feels more like a private villa than a suite. All suites have an uninterrupted view of the Caribbean Sea, while others provide panoramic views of the sea, harbor and mangroves. If looking for bigger bragging rights, the Hillside Pool Suite will certainly sort you out. Our expansive wrap around deck, infinity plunge pool and outdoor rain shower was but the beginning of our exclusive sexy island suite. Be sure to secure in advance, as they are highly coveted. Fine & Dining With an all-inclusive offering, many imagine a bastion of bad buffets. That couldn’t be further from the truth at Hermitage Bay. Chef Dezi Banhan and his cheerful, highly esteemed team not only subscribe to farm to table, they pull the produce from their organic farm on site.

TRAVEL The 5 star menu is a mad mix of Modern European along with the local Caribbean cuisine and fresh classic American dishes. It is far from a seasonal menu, as their menu changes daily.

You can’t help but leave Hermitage Bay physically, emotionally and spiritually recharged and changed. Exceptional Excursions

All dining outposts are but a few steps away from the sand. The Patriot’s almond trees provide a shady and relaxed dining experience; while the Lounge is all about the poolside ambiance, light bites and Caribbean cocktails. The Restaurant is a truly evocative spot to dine, especially during candlelit evenings when steel drums and calypso and jazz groups roll in. It makes for a very sexy and soulful evening. Room service, poolside private dining in your individual suite, and picnics can be arranged at an additional cost. They are well worth the extra dosh.

As idyllic as the resort is, it’s important to get off site to soak up the local scene, cuisine and culture. For the outdoor sect, there’s an endless string of adventure activities available. If looking to get out on the water, full and half day charters are available on catamarans. If you stay at Hermitage Bay for a year, you can hit a different beach each day, as there are 365 beaches on the island. In the water you pick your passion. There are many options: snorkel, paddleboard, kayak, or sunfish. Scuba diving can also be arranged.

Health & Wellness Aside from the silence and the bounty of natural beauty that surround Hermitage Bay, their fitness center and yoga & Pilates classes were a well-needed bonus. If you’re looking to dip deeper into decadence and wellness, simply slip into their Garden Spa. Their treatments are designed with health and wellness in mind, touching on all from colored light to aromatherapy and chakra balancing. You don’t have to believe in it, just bask in it as the treatments are far from your typical cookie cutter spa menu.

On the foodie front, explore the farm (literally) by hitting their organic farm on site. For the table, there are cooking classes to take. For a more aquatic angle, deep-sea fishing is a big fan favorite. For cultural kicks, historical tours are available of old town or you can opt to take in all the beauty from above in a Helicopter tour. That may be the best feast available, both for the eyes and the soul. For more information: hermitagebay.com

Where Stella & the Stars Meet By Rory Winston

W

hether in New York, Bilbao or Abu Dhabi, everyone realizes that the Guggenheim is not just a museum franchise. It is more a recurring motif – a concept that functions as an art venue while being dressed in whatever architectural garb suits the milieu. Likewise, it’s about time we stop referring to RitzCarlton as merely an elite hotel chain. By now, most of us must be aware that each member of this prestigious group not only has its very own aesthetics but has also done its best to have a continuously progressive dialogue with its location. The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore is no exception; and that is precisely what makes it exceptional. It aspires neither to be like another five star hotel nor even to imitate a successful family member. “No art is any good unless you can feel how it’s put together. By and large it’s the eye, the hand and if it’s any good, you feel the body,” said Frank Stella. It is little wonder then that massive three-ton installation that first greeted me as I entered the Millenia would belong to none other than the aforementioned artist. After all, if conveying a sense of wholeness and all-encompassing vision was what Stella’s art was about then I could think of no better home for it than in the luxurious Hirsch-Bedner designed grand lobby of Singapore’s Ritz-Carlton where a pearl topped dome ceiling juts towards the sky like some imagined dreamscape in an Asian legend. Boasting two crystal glass sculptures by Dale Chihuly in the respective wings, as well as a panoply of over 4,200 smartly placed works by David Hockney, Andy Warhol, Rainer Gross, Henry Moore and Robert Zachanitch, award winning architect Kevin Roche’s Ritz-Carlton certainly has, as Stella would have noted, ‘eye and hand’ while allowing for the property’s dreamy ‘body’ to engulf its patrons.

With recherché trappings, each of the 608 rooms sports walk-in closets, matt-leather and wood wall panels, and singularly octagonal windows for the spacious bathrooms. Count in the bath amenities by Asprey, one swimming pool, a spa, the personal butler service, and it is little wonder that the world’s most celebrated figures have ended up at this hotel. An unobstructed view here means a panoramic look at Marina Bay or the renowned leisure park and stadiums of Kallang. Still, The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore is more than randomly collected high end decadence masquerading as objets d’art. It is a realm that encapsulates the essence of Singapore’s multicultural legacy. Nowhere is this appreciation of hybrid local traditions more noted than in cuisine and body treatments. As a paean to Cantonese influences on the island, Summer Pavillon is a picturesque garden restaurant where soft fabrics, leather and accents of gold evoke the splendor of long gone Chinese empires. It is in this regal setting where Chef Fok Kai Yee does what I can only refer to as a historical tour of China and its foreign conflicts as played out in regional cuisine; and oh how lovely the smell of both victory and defeat as European culinary traditions engage in succulent battles with Asian ones. Think of a smoked crispy dock roll with marinated cold sliced pig trotter besieged by caviar Or how about pan fried French goose liver and marinated sliced chicken surrounded by crystal noodles in spicy sauce. Whether one opts for the Spring Blossom menu, the Mallow menu, or the Marigold menu, one’s palate soon becomes aware that authentic Singaporean Cantonese is fusion with a savory vengeance – it is a tantalizing amalgam of Chinese, European colonialist, and Malay flavors.

TRAVEL TRAVEL For cuisine with a more overtly European bent, there is Chihuly Lounge with its sumptuous assortment of beef burgers and fresh salads. On the Asiatic side, Shiraishi plays off traditional Japanese cuisine with a special emphasis on sushi, sashimi and kaiseki menus – each painstakingly created by Chef Shiraishi Shinji. My favorite restaurant, however, was the Greenhouse where Singapore’s iconic seafood dishes included peppered crabs, scallops, slipper lobsters, and a large assortment of oysters and clams. Of course, the dialogue between exclusive lifestyle and the local customs does not end with gastronomy. Nowhere is tradition and contemporary demand more aligned than in the world of bodily maintenance. Ritz-Carlton’s fitness centre offers everything from Shiatsu to its very own Millenia massage – a combination of both Asiatic relaxation therapies and those that evolved in Europe. Likewise, scrubs include Kaffir Lime body scrub and its European counterpart, the Ultimate Sea Salt Glows. When it comes to wraps that remove toxins while deeply hydrating, the Balinese Boreh ritual, the Tropical escape and the Hydrating Cocoon are but some of the few eclectic processes to have successfully borrowed the best from both the Eastern and Western world. After a day spent at the Botanical Gardens and an evening of nonstop dancing at the renowned Pangaea club, I lay down across my king sized feather bed while sipping on champagne and understood why so many stars had gathered at Singapore’s RitzCarlton. It was – forgive the pun – because the establishment itself had reached for the stars all along. Aspiration is no small thing. As Frank Stella once noted, “I want to make exalted art. A successful image has pictorial lift. I am looking for whatever is up there.” For more information: ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/Singapore/Default

Sweet Sweden W

e hadn’t even gotten out of our Volvo station wagon rental when my sister declared: “This is a Dream World!” With a giddy laugh, I completely agreed. Driving to Fiskebäckskil, a small island community in West Sweden, we had hints of the perfection that was to come. We drove past rolling pastures of hay bales covered in white plastic that looked exactly like giant marshmallows. And unwrapped ones that looked just like cinnamon buns fit for a giant. After checking out our new digs at Gullmarsstrand Hotell, we ventured onto the ferry to visit Lyseskil. That’s when we had our first encounter with a local (because everyone is friendly in Dream World, of course). “Hey, hey!” he said in true Swede style. “Hi,” we said in true American style.

“Sheltered?” I questioned. “Yes, exactly,” he enthusiastically confirmed. “I’ve come to understand that it has been a very sheltered childhood and growing up out there was very special. There are no cars on the southern islands; instead everyone gets around on mopeds, and lately, with golf cars. Everything gets here eventually, but 20 years later.” “So what do you do for fun?” “Well every April we have Christmas tree wars,” he said. “What?” we giggled. Basically, he explained, after Christmas, gangs of teens (mostly boys) go around and snatch the discarded trees on the curbs. And then, come Easter, they see who can build the biggest bonfire.

After finding out he grew up in the southern archipelago of Gothenburg called Styrsö, we were even more intrigued. Surely, he must have a dream life, we decided.

“Crews generally consist of your friends and preferably people who you are related because you need people you can trust,” he says. “Even with friends you never know if they are supporting their local bonfire secretly or if they will support yours.”

“When you grow up here, you are very... protected,” he said.

With the Christmas tree wars and an adorable community, it just made me adore Dream World even more. After saying our goodbyes, we picked up two shiny, red bicycles from the Tourist Center. We rode along the narrow streets, past summer brightly colored beach houses and toe-headed families eating ice cream. The dreamy day continued with a free music performance and delicious food at a waterside restaurant. But this was just part of our trip. Here are more must-dos when you visit West Sweden: GOTHENBURG For a heavy dose of culture, head to Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city, where you’ll discover a buzzing arts scene, indie bands, new fashion labels and friendly folks. If you visit in January, be sure to take part in Scandinavia’s best film festival, the Gothenburg International Film Festival. Plus, outdoorsy types will love the terrain. With an archipelago of 1,000 islands scattered around its shores, Gothenburg offers a wonderful, rocky playground. The Bohuslän coast is known as one of Europe’s best kayaking destinations. At the end of the day, foodies adore the five Michelin-starred restaurants. Sweden’s west coast produces some of the best fish and shellfish in the world and has helped Gothenburg build a burgeoning reputation as an award-winning, gourmet destination.

SKÅNE Skåne, a city of about 1.2 million, has a lot to offer. It’s a walkable city full of life. The first thing you’ll notice is the architecture. Since it was originally part of Denmark, there are pre-17th century Danish influences throughout the adorable villages, towns and cities. Not only that, it’s a great place to see Nordic contemporary art exhibitions at the Moderna Museet, an old electricity plant converted into a modern art museum. Dabble in raw bar options including Maine lobster held in saltwater tanks to Alaskan king crab, littlenecks and oysters. While prime cut meats are their specialty they also offer classic steakhouse fare to tempt the palette like blackened beef tenderloin tips, house made bacon, garlic butter escargot, and dry aged lamb chops. Save room for a decadent dessert such as their praline soufflé or the volcano flambéed tableside.

TRAVEL For casual and lively dining, choose the classic Hard Rock Café that combines blackjack, blues, and burgers. Get the party started and enjoy live music from their elevated stage while sipping a tropical cocktail from their extensive list that includes decadent rum and vodka spiked Ben & Jerry ice cream milkshakes and root beer floats, juice infused mojitos or hurricane margarita madness. Feast on their famous fajitas, slow cooked smokehouse Memphis BBQ including pulled pork, ribs and brisket, signature dry rub buffalo wings, or classic burger with all the fixings. While calories don’t count while on vacation, finish off with a rich Oreo cheesecake washed down with a Salted Caramel Café complete with Tia Maria, Baileys and half & half drizzled with salted caramel.

Now it’s time to hit the bustling casino. With over 190,000 square feet of gambling space it’s the sixth largest casino in the world with plenty of options to choose from in a rock n roll environment. There are 120 table games featuring blackjack, baccarat, 3 card poker, Asian poker, Pai Gow, Let it Ride, Mississippi Stud and poker, including a $1 million championship game. The latest addition to this vast bastion of gambling and decadence is the Asian themed Jubao Palace. Enjoy games like Pai Gow tiles, Asia poker, and baccarat in an elegant setting befitting of Macau with Asian themed restaurants like a late night casual noodle bar and Rock ‘n Raw serving pan Asian specialties and sushi. While there’s no shortage of people watching, the center bar is in the middle of the action of the floor and open 24 hours during the week and closes from 3 am to 8 am on weekends. Pick your poison between a potent libation or an artisan craft beer as you refuel for the night. For a low key bar scene the Whammy bar is just off the casino floor and a chill spot to regroup with friends. To relax and unwind from a hard night of partying make sure to visit the Rock spa. The signature rock massage features hot stone therapy to ease muscle tension and induce deep relaxation. Other specialty massages include aromatherapy where essential oils will melt any stress away and a therapeutic deep tissue treatment will alleviate any knots and tension. Erase years away with an indulgent facial that uses Dermalogica and Skinceutical products. After living it up at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino a visit to the soothing spa is exactly the right remedy. For more information: seminolehardrocktampa.com

AUBERGE SAINT-ANTOINE

AN ENCHANTING BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN THE HEART OF QUÉBEC CITY By W. A. Muller

N

amed the number one top city hotel in Canada by Travel + Leisure in 2013, Auberge Saint-Antoine is truly a standout property. These notable accolades, however, don’t equate to an impersonalized and cookiecutter experience—in fact, it’s far from it. A cozy and stylish boutique hotel, the Auberge Saint-Antoine embraces the charm and aura of Québec City, offering guests a rare and treasured experience. The rooms and luxury suites are modern and sleek down to the most intricate details. The family-owners of Auberge Saint-Antoine are behind the hotel’s exceptionality. The Price family has been ingrained in the history of Québec for nearly 200 years and the effort of Tony Price and his family—the 6th generation of the Price family—has especially enriched the Auberge Saint-Antoine experience as they have pursued the tradition of combining tourism with history.

general state of the Old Port neighborhood at the time. When Auberge Saint-Antoine opened in 1992, it began with 23 rooms, two meeting rooms, and the renovation of early 19th century Hunt warehouse, now the hotel’s restaurant, Panache. In 1995, the Maison Hunt, a historical 18th century house was entirely restored to offer guests historicallythemed suites, raising the number of rooms to 31. The expansion continued in 2003, when a modern building was added to increase the total room count to 94. The rich history behind Auberge Saint-Antoine is evident from the moment guests check in, as a 17th century cannon battery found on the Ilôt Hunt site during an archeological dig runs through the lobby. Many other artifacts found during the digs are displayed in the common areas, next to the hotel room doors, and in the room itself, giving guests a uniquely intimate insight on the history of the city and hotel site.

The enchanting Auberge Saint-Antoine stands on Ilôt Hunt in Québec City’s quaint old port. Deeply rooted in Québec’s history, the picturesque property faces the Saint Lawrence River. In 1990, the Ilôt Hunt site was acquired by the Price family, undergoing several phases before its current state. It was then a collection of abandoned warehouses, apartment buildings in disrepair and an open air parking lot. This condition was very much a mirror of the

The range of rooms and luxury suites offer a diverse range of options from classic rooms to thematic suites. Guests can also choose to indulge in exhilarating packages such as Romantic Escape and Bed & Breakfast. The rooms mix old-world with opulence and offer chic amenities including luxury linens, goose down duvets and pillows, and Bose sound systems. For guests hosting events with larger parties, the various meeting rooms offer

corporate events and dinner parties a more intimate setting. A cinema room doubles for corporate presentations or, when available, for screenings of your favorite movies. In 2004, the Auberge Saint-Antoine opened their restaurant, Panache, offering French Canadian cuisine with a twist. This name reflects the elegance and distinction the restaurant has established as one of the city’s finest. The dining room is a historic gem, located in the 19th century Hunt maritime warehouse. It has been restored with the utmost care to preserve and display the treasured stone walls and massive wood beams. With a panoramic view of the St. Lawrence River and daylight flooding through generous windows, the atmosphere is relaxed and convivial. In cold weather, Panache is kept warm and snug with a gas fireplace where guests can sink into comfy armchairs and unwind on the velvety sofas. The menu is sensational, drawing inspiration from Québec’s fresh produce. The seasonal menu features decadent dishes such as Nova Scotia lobster, North Shore snow crabs, and Saint-Apollinaire duck foie gras. This hot spot is best—all year round. •

Just north of Palm Beach, Jupiter has some of the most spectacular oceanfront in Florida, and the resort has 1,000 square feet of private beach. The contemporary rooms, which were well appointed and surprisingly quiet given the hotel’s location, feature Frette linens and Molton Brown toiletries with flat screens and ipod docking stations. on-site, fine-dining restaurant, Juni, under the direction of Michelin-starred chef, Shaun Hergatt. An intimate 50-seat restaurant, Juni offers a farm-to-table seasonal menu using primarily local ingredients. The dishes are presented with a sophisticated simplicity yet robust with flavors. Hergatt, a native Australian, began his career in the kitchens in Sydney and the U.S. His menu is complex, yet simply prepared to give credit to the fresh ingredients used. From foie gras to Tuscan-kale soup, the appetizers were a highlight. Be sure to try the trio of oysters with citrus blossoms and yuzu reduction, although you can’t go wrong with any of the dishes and be sure to leave room for dessert. The attention to detail here was just as impressive, the service was impeccable and each course beautifully presented. Hotel Chandler is the perfect stay for the leisure and business traveler. ew Yorkers do things with a passion. They work hard and they play hard. And when they play, they want a quality experience, reasonable cost and easy traveling times. More and more New Yorkers are finding the Jersey Shore (say it like a New Jersey native…”Down the shore…”) where there are white sand beaches and a host of choices for singles, couples and families to choose from. One of the top destinations in recent years has been Seaside Heights, a scant 83 miles from Times Square. Seaside Heights is an easy drive or a more relaxed one with mass transit via New Jersey Transit bus #137 from the Port Authority Bus terminal. One of the prime destinations in Seaside is the Casino Pier with its plethora of attractions and activities. As with so many shore areas Seaside and Casino Pier were severely damaged by the ravages of Superstorm Sandy. But showing its Jersey Pluck, Casino Pier came back stronger and better than before.

Maria Mastoris, Casino Pier spokesperson, literally gushed as she spoke about the attraction and the upgrades that have made it even more of a destination. “We have rides and attractions aimed at adults and several that are designed to give the little ones a truly fun day,” said Mastoris. “One of the new attractions is the Jump Around, a beach buggy ride that the little ones will really enjoy.”

By Bob & Sandy Nesoff the smaller set and family groups are not left out. Families can get together and enjoy Pirate’s Hideaway, a family roller coaster and Pirate’s Island, a walk-through with four levels of adventure featuring swinging bridges and a rope net to climb.

Mastoris noted that there are bumper cars and a new Musik Express that accommodates 60 riders at a time in 20 cars as it accelerates in a circular train through hills, a tunnel, sirens, light effects and a smoke machine with pop music piped in… perhaps to drown out the screams.

There is no admission to enter Casino Pier but there is a charge for individual rides allowing families to control their expenses. On Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 6 p.m. wristbands providing unlimited rides may be purchased for $18. The same fee holds for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 p.m. until midnight. The adjacent water park has slides, tubes and just about anything to enjoy on a hot summer day.

Air Race is almost aptly named, as it is a hairraising ride that takes passengers on a simulated aerobatic trip that could be seen at an air show. The Disc’O places participants on a giant disc facing outward as it spins and swings them around.

Mastoris notes that a high percentage of Casino Pier’s visitors come from the New York area as well as North Jersey. It is a quick ride down the Garden State Parkway to the shore. Or, as noted, by bus from the port Authority.

While much of the activity is geared for those who can meet minimum height requirements,

Summer To Do List For the Upcoming Admissions Season Getting Organized One of the most important things you can be doing this summer to ensure a smooth admission season is to get organized! When September arrives you must schedule and attend tours and open houses, mail your applications, and attend the various playgroups/ interviews. Why not set up your organizational tools early? • Buy a calendar or create an Excel Spreadsheet. • List all the schools you like along with contact information: phone number, mailing address, e-mail and most important, the name of the Director of Admissions. • Each school has their own application deadline and procedure. Note all deadlines, open houses, tours and interview dates. This can be overwhelming and hard to keep track, so maintaining a folder or a calendar that is easily accessible will help keep you organized and sane. We suggest a duplicate calendar for your spouse.

By Jennifer Brozost and Vimmi Shroff Invest in a filing system. All correspondence from each school should be saved in their designated folder. Whether done on-line or off! Set up a notebook to record your thoughts, impressions and observations of each school. Record your impressions immediately after each school visit so that they are fresh and accurate. This ‘personal diary’ is an invaluable tool to have as you get closer to the decision making process.

Work on your Application Essays Early! One of the most time-consuming and stressful parts of any application process is writing the many essays needed to complete each application. Most essays will ask that you describe your child and will require that you explain why you are applying to ‘School X.’ Take time over the summer to jot down your child’s many strengths and some of the weakness. Keep the latter list short.

Once you have chosen four or five attributes, note some brief anecdotes that would complement those attributes. This list will ensure an easier writing process! Make the anecdotes personal and specific, this will make your essay much more memorable! And PLEASE be realistic and SUCCINCT when describing your child. One of the goals of this process is to gain admission in a school that is the right “fit” for your family … not just any school!

Look at Schools with an Open Mind Opinions, opinions! Everyone has them and when it comes to schools they like to share them! Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation, gossip, and ‘frenemies’ out there. People are competitive and do not always have your best interests in mind.

Do Your Homework! If all goes well the first time around, this admission process will be a one- time event. Do your homework - both for the schools to which you are applying as well as the entire process! School websites are a great resource. Learn as much as you can about their mission statement, history, educational philosophy and physical space. Talk to families who currently have children in school. The more you know - the more confidence you’ll have - the easier the next six months will be!

118 • Resident July 2014

One of the most productive things you can do now and through the entire process is to tune out those opinions. Stay connected with dear friends who have their own children in the schools to which you are applying, an education consultant, and most importantly, yourself.

orthern Italian eatery Sotto Sopra in Amagansett has re-opened its doors for the 2014 summer season, inviting guests on a culinary journey that highlights the region’s traditional flavors and cooking methods. Under the direction of Managing Partner Rose Evangelista, Sotto Sopra has quickly become one of the most sought-after restaurants on the East End, known for its frequent celebrity guests, relaxing atmosphere, exceptional service, and fresh, flavorful fare. Sotto Sopra’s expertly crafted menu developed by Executive Chef Josh Savi (formerly of Restaurant Patrick Guilabud in Dublin), takes advantage of the restaurant’s wood-burning oven to offer up freshly baked breads, crispy Italian style pizza and whole roasted fish such as Branzino al Forno (whole-roasted Italian Sea Bass with charred tomato aioli). Delicious fresh salads such as Insalata di Formaggio di Capra e Melone (goat cheese, melon and prosciutto salad, topped with candied pistachio), antipastos such as Robiola Crostini (warm crostini topped with Robiola cheese, grilled figs and spiced walnuts, drizzled with orange

venerable foodie scene that we are fortunate enough to call home.

ummer is in the air finally, and we’ve uncovered some of NYC’s hidden gems from a floating lobster shack to a romantic Italian hideaway in the West Village as well as revisiting a NYC

icon that’s about to turn five, this month it’s all about experiencing and exploring the city’s

North Lobster Company Even if you can’t escape to Cape Cod over the weekend, the experience of a New England summer can still be had on the city’s first floating lobster shack in the Hudson River. Open daily from 11:30 pm to 11 pm, the 3 story boat sets sail every three hours on a relaxing 45 minute ride along the Hudson where diners can linger as long as they like. Crustacean aficionados will delight in their authentic Maine style lobster rolls or butter poached full lobster with all the sides. Start with a platter from their extensive raw bar with a daily selection of oysters, littlenecks, crab claws, and jumbo shrimp which pair perfectly with their Mason jar cocktails like a spicy brined Bloody Mary or other seaworthy cocktails like ‘Batten down the Hatch’- a NYC version of a spiced rum Mai Tai. Designed to encourage mingling and making new friends the casual setting offers communal picnic benches that are perfect to take in the afternoon sun or a captivating sunset. Celebrate the 4th of July on their Lobster Cruise that will sail around the Hudson to the East side for unparalleled views of the world famous fireworks only NYC can produce.

SD26 On the heels of its upcoming fifth anniversary, the father and daughter culinary team of Tony and Marisa May proves that fine cuisine runs in the genes. After developing a loyal following at San Domenico, SD26 is the younger contemporary successor that caters to the new generation of foodies. At the helm of the airy open kitchen is chef Matteo Bergamini formerly of Daniel who takes a modern approach to fine Italian cuisine. The vast selection of salumeria and cheeses have all been imported from Italy that are only matched by their collection of over 1,100 different labels of wine some of which are served on tap at their wine bar. The family’s signature dish is the uovo in ravioli which features an egg yolk stuffed between delicate ribbons of pasta drizzled with truffle butter. Other palette pleasers include the grilled baby octopus with fava bean puree, wild bass carpaccio, pasta with sea urchin, scallops, and pepperoncino. For carnivores the Barolo wine braised beef cheeks with a balsamic reduction is an aria unto itself and the plum and chard stuffed quail offers a unique pairing of savory and sweet. Dessert is a treat with their famous tiramisu with espresso sauce and their dreamy floating island on vanilla sauce.

Baker & Co Baker & Co is one of those quintessentially romantic West Village spot that exudes the charm that characterizes the neighborhoodexposed brick walls, mosaic tile floors and a lovely covered patio. This is the latest outpost by Elena Fabiani the owner of Emporio and Aurora who brought her Northern Italian palette to the city creating scrumptious renditions of classic pasta dishes like smoked eggplant ravioli with buffalo mozzarella, lamb ragu pacchieri with hints of mint and olive, and squid bucatini with guanciale. For main courses the striped bass with truffle onion puree is perfect for a summer night, and the porcelet shoulder with dandelion and rhubarb have fresh flavors not found anywhere else. As Italians are known for their love of food and friends, this is a perfect spot for a first date or romantic rendezvous while lingering over a glass of Montepulciano and feeling like you may have stepped out of Roman Holiday.

VILLAGIO ON THE PARK

A TASTE OF ITALY AT CENTRAL PARK

lex Kalas and Thomas Billante, owners of a profusion of restaurants in Miami as well as Chicago, have transformed the space that was once home to Mickey Mantle’s Restaurant & Bar (40 Central Park South) and opened the new Villagio On the Park, a refined Italian restaurant that allows al fresco dining with views of Central Park. According to Alex, both he and Thomas decided to open a restaurant in New York City because, “the many New Yorkers who have been to our restaurants in Miami have had wonderful dining experiences. Now they can be on their home turf and enjoy our authentic, fresh taste of Italy in one of New York City’s finest neighborhoods.” The stunning interior was Designed by Jeffrey Beers International, who also created the unique looks of New York restaurants including db Moderne, Villard Michel Richard and Towne, Villagio On the Park boasts a modern aesthetic built on marble and wood. Walls are lined with rustic pizza paddles, enhancing your experience of an authentic slice of Italy, while hundreds of illuminated crystals hang from the ceiling and reflect off one another to cast an ubiquitous glow. Under the helm of Executive Chef Paul Johnston, Villagio On the Park makes its own pastas and imports many of the essential ingredients from overseas, such as Portuguese octopus and calamari from Europe. Signature dishes include a gondoletta stuffed with

spinach and ricotta in a truffle mushroom cream sauce, and zucchini flowers, which are harvested in Palm Beach, filled with smoked mozzarella and prosciutto. Pizzas are baked in the wood-burning oven, and gluten-free options are on the menu. All desserts, such as apple pie al la mode, tiramisu, panna cotta, chocolate soufflé and crème brulee are created

on the premises. If you have not visited Central Park lately, it is perfect weather to get out there and revisit. Cap the opportunity for a stroll with a meal at Villagio. The experience is certain to provide you with the excuse to stroll the park again soon. •

A ROYAL FEAST AT DECOY P

eking duck has been around since the Imperial era of China. It was served on special occasions to notables and royalty, and throughout the years little has changed to China’s national dish revered for its delicate preparation to achieve a thin crispy skin seasoned to perfection with thin slices of meat served in buns with scallions and hoisin sauce. Decoy is the latest Asian fusion gem underneath Red Farm in the West Village created by Asian food connoisseur Ed Schoenfeld and chef Joe Ng who have based their concept around this notable dish which has been roasted to perfection. Because only a limited number of ducks are prepared nightly, even if you’re royalty scoring a reservation may take a while but it is well worth the wait. Diners are seated on a long wooden communal table where you can see all the tempting delicacies your neighbors have ordered to influence your decision. In keeping with the theme of the restaurant, ducks are featured prominently in the décor whether they are feasting on a banquet in a still life painted mural along the exposed brick wall or decoys hanging on the light fixture. The best way to experience the tasting journey is to partake in the $65/person family style prix fixe menu with a group of friends that offers a small plate per person, whole Peking duck and a side dish. Every small dish is layered with unexpected flavors. Recommended

favorites were the spicy braised oxtail dumplings, fresh Kumamoto oysters with yuzu ice, foie gras tarts topped with strawberry providing a decadently sweet twist, Katz’s crispy pastrami triangles and the savory shrimp stuffed shisito peppers. Treating food as art, the uni topped sweet potato noodle salad is served in a large uni shell over steaming dry ice providing a dramatic presentation. To experience Chef Ng’s culinary range order some of the main courses like the tasty lobster chow fun with soft wide noodles, or the lightly crisped sweet and sour shrimp. To complement the Asian fusion flavors of the menu, the cocktail menu was designed to infuse sweet and spicy and leave a lingering effect. Try the trio of craft shochu cocktails using fresh ingredients like rum, pineapple, rhubarb and cinnamon or gin, jasmine peach tea and yuzu, or guava juice and Cherry Herring. A favorite was the Smoke ‘n Spice with a thai chili mezcal with pineapple, Sriracha bitters, and aperol which will leave you craving for more, which is how you will feel after feasting here.

The Towers of Natchez A rare opportunity to live and own a work of art, this landmark mansion occupies a prominent niche in antebellum Natchez architecture. The Towers has been restored by one of the country’s foremost entrepreneurs, with all the elegance and grandeur of a bygone era, and retains the warmth and deep charm of Adriatic Italy. The Renaissance itself somehow loiters for a moment in the deep shadows of the triple-arched entrance while time seems to walk with guarded footsteps through magnificent gardens with towering 300 year old trees and giant azaleas. Known as the grandest mansion in Natchez, the renovation included magnificent wall coverings and draperies, antique lace sheers, extensive plaster molding and wainscoting, Aubusson carpets and high rococo antiques. The new owner will live among priceless furniture by John Henry Belter, J.J. Meeks, Alexander Roux and Prudent Mallard. Also included for the new owner are extensive and unique collections, such as 300 antique beaded purses, 100 antique tiaras and crowns, antique lace, chatelaines, Moser glass, vintage costume jewelry and many others. There is also a collection of props and costumes from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 2004 movie – PHANTOM OF THE OPERA – including the Phantom’s mask, gloves, cape and sword. This 7,500 sq. ft. mansion has 5 bedrooms including a spectacular new master suite with 1,600 sq. ft. and is secluded on approximately 5 acres of gardens featuring 20 bronze sculptures representing some of the finest artists of wildlife in the world, including Star Liana York, Ken Rowe, Danny Ostermiller and Chris Navarro. This property offers a lifetime of collections that are impossible to duplicate today. Also included with The Towers is Natchez’s finest boutique gift shop in the heart of Natchez, including the building and inventory.

A RUSSIAN STANDARD A

RIANA is a contemporary interpretation on Russian cuisine. It opened in New York City in February 2014. Named after owner Ariana Grinblat, a Russian-American recording artist, the menu has some very unique dishes and signature cocktails. Some of which are a pickle salad with Meyer lemon-yogurt dressing, cabbage stuffed with lobster and quail in a walnut-pecan sauce. The chef is Vitalii Kovalev from St. Petersburg. The softly lighted room has a custom marble Craft Vodka bar with infused and aged vodkas where mixologists create some very tantalizing cocktails. Ariana Soho is located right in the heart of the historic Soho neighborhood in lower Manhattan. “The 2,000 square foot restaurant, located in a building constructed in the 1800s, is divided into four distinct areas, including a dining room with a dramatic skylight and a cozy private dining space with a gas fireplace. The décor, designed by Grinblat to be an extension of her (nearby) living room, is a modern minimalist symphony of soft grey, champagne, taupe and cognac tones further warmed by the glow.” Upon our arrival Ariana greeted us and her attractive staff was very attentive to our every need and even taught us some Russian phrases. We sampled several unique signature cocktails such as “Caviar Martini” which consisted of a Black

Next we feasted on cabbage stuffed with lobster (butter-poached Lobster mousse, napa cabbage, beurre blanc, black caviar garnish) and Velvet Borscht, rich consommé of beets (a beautiful bright cranberry color), cabbage and root vegetables in oxtoil broth, with slow-roasted short rib finished with a dollop of crème fraiche and finely chopped chives. Dining at Ariana was truly a treat for all of the senses. The bar is slowly creating a following of its own. Ariana and beverage director Orson Salicetti developed a one-of-a-kind craft vodka bar inside the restaurant, with in-house oak barrel-aged vodka and only the freshest fruits and herbs

We started with some small plates and shared amongst our table, including Pickle Salad, cubed house-pickled beets, heirloom tomatoes, jicama and micro greens, sprinkled with smoked bacon and pecan soil and drizzled with Meyer lemon agave yogurt dressing; Country Pâté, chicken and duck liver served with cranberry hazelnut crostini, house made pear preserves and house-pickled shallots; The presentation was as much a work of art as the flavor of fresh exotic ingredients.

According to Ariana, “It’s very oldworld meets new-world conceptually. There’s a story behind every dish on the menu.” Classic Russian recipes are deconstructed and revived with contemporary flare, organic ingredients and bold flavors.

OLYMPUS TO ONASSIS, AN ODYSSEY J

ackie O – story upon story. We grew up on them. My mom and her generation gossiping about the former first lady’s marriage to Onassis long after the shipping magnate had died. It was America’s first paparazzi-induced excursion overseas since Grace Kelly’s marriage; the renowned pictures of the super yacht, Christina O, covering the tabloids like so much in the way of jetsam. There they were in Monaco, then suddenly it was Martinique, then, a few issues later, back again floating peacefully in the Aegean. Richard Burton – scallops; Frank Sinatra – Calamari; Princess Grace with her passion for red snappers; and Elizabeth Taylor with langustines, swordfish, lamb, arugula and whatever else she could pile on. All of them were there. Filled with the bounties of Thalassa – the Greek goddess personifying the Mediterranean Sea – the renowned tycoon’s ship became the site on which to affix our own reveries. It was the site wherein our own aspirations were played out as we sailed between the ports of our imaginations in a timeless sea where Hollywood legends and mythological creatures ate together beneath the stars. It was this memory that washed over me as I sat there in the company of my mother and my good friend while indulging in a copious feast in Tribeca’s Greek restaurant, called – appropriately enough - Thalassa. The association was not strained. After all, the now opulent three-floor restaurant had once been a shipping warehouse where Greek Olives and cheeses had been stored. As for the present design by the much-lauded architect Jean-Pierre Heim, it certainly did its best to echo the seafaring experience. With overhead sails running across a bar whose marble derives from the island of Thasos, flower-filled urns from Tripoli, handmade Iroko tables from Mykonos, and a seafood display that

looks like it was gift wrapped and dropped off from any number of Mediterranean ports of call, the restaurant is a twentieth century shipping tycoon’s version of a culinary Odyssey.

Imported from Greece, Spain, Portugal, Hawaii, New Zealand and West Africa, the seafood used by Chef Raphael Abrahante allows for a five star voyage through a timeless archipelago. Christening our ship with the most exclusive Greek wine list in the city, we embark upon our journey with some fine Meze born of the shore: Zucchini Fritters, veal keftes, assorted Greek dips – each taunting us with delightful textures and aromas. The shrimp youvets with orozo and the tartare trio of Royal Dorado and tuna with truffle oil is a final reminder that earth’s finest treasures are at the mercy of the incoming waves. With the shore receding, we enter an unknown world where whole shrimps swim in a sea of ro-

bola wine sauce alongside a reef of baby clams and mussels wading in a bay of tomato. Likewise, kataifi filo - with a volcanic center of sea scallops - surrounded by an ocean of sheep’s milk butter and kalamata balsamic reduction is a taste of the islands that’s hard to forget. Of course, nothing beats deep sea diving for the elusive Octapodithat hand-massaged creature grilled to perfection. As one day blends into the next and first course turns to main course, From the comfort of our leather chairs, we had charted a course through an epic poem disguised as a meal. Sitting across from me, my friend burst into a thick godlike laugh as if he had just overheard a joke on Olympus, while my mother continued to cautiously sip her wine while glancing intermittently in the direction of Jackie and Aristotle. To each his own legend and time period, I thought as I drank the remains of my espresso. Still I was certain we had been there – both in the ancient world of the gods and on board the renowned Christina O. Thalassa was not an orthodox attempt at a Greek restaurant. Neither overtly ethnic nor in the throes of fusion for its own sake, Thalassa was how the other half lived – the other half being those that still ate from the cornucopia of the gods, and those that sat with Aristotle Onassis watching the sun set on the Aegean Sea.

GREEK GOLD A

n authentic Greek restaurant, Periyali, has become one of the most famous spots for Greek cuisine in Manhattan. They opened their doors 27 years ago in 1987 in response to a need for a classic Greek restaurant in a city that was filled with a multitude of other ethnic options. The history of Periyali runs deep, as it’s considered the first restaurant putting Greek wine on the map. It’s also the first restaurant to make diners aware that there was much more to Greek food than street carts showcasing spits of lamb. The restaurant’s charming decor of whitewashed walls not only immediately transports you to the Greek Islands but they also speak to the variety of seafood options on the menu. And while seafood definitely plays a large role in this cuisine, lamb and other quintessentially Greek items grace their menu as well. Under the direction of Charles Bowman, of La Cote Basque and The River Café, the kitchen consistently churns out mouth-watering dishes. The food is likened to home cooking, where family recipes were the inspiration that helped to build “Patmian House,” a seasonal restaurant on the Greek island of Patmos where the restaurant’s first consulting chefs hailed from. Olives are served upon arrival to your table, a nice touch to help put you in a Greek state of mind before you’ve even read through the menu. When it comes to the appetizers, go for the octopus and continue on with the lamb chop or moussaka entrees. These are some of their signature dishes and

132 • Resident July 2014

are highly recommended. In addition to the aforementioned, the Souvlaki is charcoal-grilled and kicked up a notch, using filet mignon, resulting in a succulent dish. Classics like skordalia, fava beans, and sautéed chicken livers over lentils all are some of the best in town. For dessert, a nice assortment of pastries and the creamy rice pudding are excellent options, along with Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts. Overall, Periyali exudes a cool Mediterranean feel offering an oasis from the bustling city streets

outside its doors. The service is always attentive and professional and the noise level is extremely low, a nice change from most city establishments.

Chef/owner Dino Redzic at an off premise catering function

HEAVENLY ITALIAN

By Josephine Zohny

W

hen Dino Redzic decided to open Uncle Paul’s in 2012 with his partners, many questioned why the critically acclaimed restaurateur would make the foray into the pizza business. Now, less than two years later, the answer is simple - he’s never done better business. More than simply a pizzeria, Uncle Paul’s is a force unto itself. Located by Grand Central a Station and open 24 hours a day, the restaurant serves a variety of Italian and Mediterranean dishes and carries a robust wine list. It is a place where a person can grab a casual slice on the run one-day and sit down with colleagues for a full spread on the next. Redzic’s picks for his favorite dishes at the restaurant are a testament to the eclectic nature of the menu: duck confit pizza, black linguini with shrimp and beef carpaccio top the list. Uncle Paul’s boasts a steller reputation when it comes to corporate and other off-premise catering. Efficient, quality service is a trademark of the organization. James Whiteside ABT’s Primo Ballerino By Isaiah Negron Produced by Joe Alexander

A

merican Ballet Theatre principal dancer and pop star James Whiteside is making his mark both on and off the ABT stage. Performing since age nine in his hometown of Fairfield, Connecticut, Whiteside began his training at the D’Valda & Sirico Dance and Music Centre and went on to continue at the Virginia School of the Arts under the direction of Petrus Bossman and David Keener. “I had tried everything, football, soccer, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, you name it. I hated everything and I was a hyperactive kid,” he remembers. “My mom threw me a phone book and said, ‘Find something interesting to do.’ I found a photo of these dancers, a man holding a woman up over his head, and I didn’t know what it was but I thought it looked cool. So I said I wanted to try that and it happened to be a dance studio.” At 16, Whiteside entered the Youth America Grand Prix, an annual student ballet competition for dancers ages eight through nineteen that awards scholarships to some of the world’s leading dance schools. “It’s so funny to be surrounded by all these people who have won competitions at such a young age, but I was a bit of a late bloomer in ballet,” he confesses. “So it means a lot to be asked to do these galas for YAGP as a proud alumni of the competition when, in fact, I never won anything. Everything has really come full circle.” In 2002, Whiteside entered the ranks of Boston Ballet II where he continued to improve his skills under the direction of Raymond Lukens, who is now the director of ABT’s National Training Curriculum. Whiteside continued to climb the ballet ladder and joined the Corps de Ballet of Boston Ballet in 2003. Five years later he was promoted to Principal Dancer in the company. “There was a time in Boston where I could literally do four ballets in a night and, while I bitched about it, it was magic,” recalls Whiteside. “You feel so worthwhile and loved in the art form when you’re being

used that much. It’s phenomenal.” With the Boston Ballet, he danced an eclectic span of Principal roles including pieces such as George Balanchine’s Rubies, Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker, and Marius Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty. In September 2012, Whiteside came back to NYC where he was taken on as a Soloist at ABT; a year later he became a Principal Dancer. “I wanted new inspiration, motivation and new ballets,” he explains. “It was an exploration of new things and that’s why I’m here. And to grab on to the dream I always had of being in ABT.” This season, he makes his debut alongside ABT Soloist and friend Isabella Boylston in Giselle on June 18th. “It’s a fantastic ballet with a lot of acting meat in it,” he said. As for his most memorable moment at ABT thus far, Whiteside says, “It would have to

be my first Met season, stepping onto the stage for the first time and realizing that I finally got here. It was unreal.” Among his ballet heroes are the legendary Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov as well as fellow ABT principal dancer Marcelo Gomes. “I’m a huge fan of Marcelo. I think he really understands what it means to be a ballerino in today’s dance world,” he said. And just what is a ballerino, you might ask? “Everyone always asks me, ‘What do I call a male ballet dancer?’ And I’m sick of saying ‘male ballet dancer,’” he explains. “Ballerino. Done. You can even call me ‘Rino’ for short.” When not at the barre or gracing the ABT stage, Whitefield steps into another set of shoes, more specifically, stilettos. In 2005, he created his alternate pop/dance persona,

JbDubs, writing and producing his own music as well as choreographing the music videos that have made him a YouTube sensation. “I have a huge appreciation for campiness. It’s just an insane amount of fun,” he admits. “This is more about enjoying life than actually cross dressing.” Coined as an acronym for his name, J for James, B for his middle name Bruce, and Dubs for leading W in his last name, Whitefield finds freedom in his personal creativity, still finding the energy to make music and choreograph in addition to his demanding work as a dancer. His newest video, “Dirty Mouth,” further explores Whitefield’s artistic expression and desire to break the mold of what a dancer can do. “I wrote the song because I’ve been criticized about how profane my music is and, though the video is full of innuendo, there’s not one curse word in the entire song. So I wanted the video to mimic that and show how absurd language is,” he explains. “It’s all tongue and cheek but has a real point to it. With the discipline and structure of my ballet career, it’s just fun to sometimes let loose and be ridiculous.” Whiteside’s love for creativity is also reflected by his choice of a boyfriend, the fabulous and idiosyncratic Milk of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season Six. “He comes to loads of performances and the galas, but he doesn’t come in drag. Maybe one day, but I don’t know if the ABT patrons would appreciate that,” he said laughing. Asked if he had a choice of kissing any famous person in the world living or dead he replied, “It would be Milk, of course!“ without missing a beat. When asked to describe himself in a few words, Whiteside smiled and said, “‘Out-of –my-way.’ It means that I have a strong will and I want to do whatever I can to achieve my dreams and goals,” he clarifies. “I’m not going to go Showgirls on anybody, but I’m going to work really hard, have discipline and be in the right frame of mind to be the best that I can.” As one of the preeminent dancers of his generation, rising musical star and creative savant, Whiteside stands as a role model for those who are searching for their place in the world saying, “Embrace who you are and do what you want. Live life to the fullest and don’t hold yourself back because of societal norms; blossom into a new human being who’s always growing and pushing civilization. Go out and live your life without shame.” jameswhiteside.org youtube.com/user/jbwhiteside27 abt. org/dancers

Five-Star Hotel Inspired Ву W.A. Muller

otels and condos have long been two separate places: but the Naftali Group is shaking things up in the Gramercy District.

The Manhattan-based developer recently debuted its 234 East 23rd Street condominium development, a striking 20-story new tower slated to house 57 luxury residences. But, given today’s buyers demand more than a nice home, Naftali filled the building with boutique hotel-inspired amenities and lounge spaces to make the entire building feel like an inviting cocoon. Residents will enter through a double-height lobby designed by Rottet Studio - the first-ever partnership with a residential real-estate developer – which has also worked in refined hotel spaces including The Surrey in New York and the St. Regis in Aspen. Naftali also worked to make sure that the building, which should be ready for occupancy in late 2015, fit in with its surroundings. “We made a conscious design decision to move away from glassy buildings and more toward classic, authentic architecture,” said Miki Naftali, Founder and CEO of the Naftali Group, which owns, operates and is developing 12 residential properties across the city. “The result is a building that has strength and substance and yet has beautiful architecture.” The residences, which go up three-bedrooms, range from 602-square-feet to more-than 2,300 square

feet, boast floor-to-ceiling casement windows. Prices range from around $800,000 for a studio to more than $6 million for a four-bedroom penthouse with including sweeping outdoor spaces. Many of the residences have private terraces. Solid white-oak floors add a warm aesthetic to the units, while ornate detailing and crafted finishes come together with flexible layouts, interspersed with unique build-outs and alcoves. The stylish-and-modern kitchens feature the brands today’s buyers seek: Bertazzoni and SubZero appliances, for example. There are even Bosch washers and dryers, making trips to the Laundromat history. There’s plentiful storage, ample work surfaces and flexible layouts that can accommodate everything form a casual family meal to an elaborate dinner party. The building’s stately bathrooms offer clean, contemporary lines and elegant materials, including marble-lined floors and walls, custom casement-style glass doors and custom-made vanity units featuring Carrera marble.

Amenities include a second-floor garden terrace, a barbecue grill and an outdoor kitchen, as well as a library with a billiards table, kitchenette/ bar, and modern fitness center. There is also a doorman, concierge service through Abigail Michaels, individual private storage units and bicycle storage. “Gramercy is one of Manhattan’s most desired neighborhoods, and 234 East 23rd embodies everything that has traditionally been so soughtafter in the immediate area, including architecture with real character,” added Alexa Lambert, Executive Vice President of Stribling Marketing Associates, the exclusive sales and marketing agent. “This building is all about the details and exquisite finishes, and the sum of its parts equals a very sophisticated living space that we are predicting will be very popular with both seasoned and first-time buyers.” For more information: 234e23.com

Catering to New York’s New Wave of Property Investors Ву W.A. Muller

ith a keen eye on the real estate marketplace and a wealth of knowledge on key market trends, 30-year-old Dylan Pichulik observed an untapped need for property management catered towards the growing number of foreign investors in New York City and decided to step in. To respond to this market demand, Pichulik founded XL Real Property Management, New York City’s leading property management firm focused on providing streamlined oversight for individual units owned by foreign and local investors. “I began to see a segment of the market that was not being targeted. There was an apparent, and growing, demand for property management geared toward foreign investors, who wanted to ensure their investments were looked after and cared for when they couldn’t be in the city,” said Pichulik. “I decided to start XL Real Property Management to help give this growing portion of the market peace of mind that their investments are secure and their interests were represented. “

146 • Resident July 2014

Since Pichulik started the company, XL Real Property Management has seen exponential growth, swiftly becoming the largest and most recognized manager of individual investor property in New York City. The team’s combined 25 years of experience in the industry allows XL Real Property Management to provide expert attention to every property need and a thoughtful servicedriven approach. As a result, the company has become an indispensable asset to owners who benefit from owning New York property from anywhere in the world, eliminating the added stress of handling sometimes complicated daily operations, condo board relations, renovation oversight, rent collection and property repairs. With an ever-growing portfolio, the company sees no sign of slowing down. States Pichulik, “Our growth has been really incredible. We started with 12 clients in 2012, and now have over 1,000. Our clients come from all over the world – China, France, Israel, Brazil, Russia, Ukraine, and Venezuela.”

XL Real Property Management provides a wide variety of unique services for clients including: rent invoicing and collection; expense payment; tenant approval and requests; maintenance requests; lease and lease renewal preparation; board application assistant for new tenants/renewals; apartment turn-over services; insurance procurement; renovation oversight; unit owner meeting attendance; facilitation of state and federal tax filing preparation; routine site visits and inspections; monthly and annual financial reporting; and house rules implementation. “It is important for us to show the foreign investors that it is possible to receive a high level of responsiveness and specialized service even when they may be thousands of miles away,” added Pichulik. “We allow for tenants to be less wary of renting investor units, while aiding overall building operations by establishing a local representative. This way, everybody benefits.” For more information:

f you’ve been in Club Monaco recently, it’s no secret that tints of white are all the rage. While this trend is happening in fashion, the idea pours into home decor as well. We live in a city with so many distractions, colors, lights, noises, but also a wonderful energy that we all love. However upon returning home, we yearn for a sanctuary away from it all. Designing a room devoid of these rackets and full of calm whites is not only beautiful, it is necessary for rejuvenation. Here’s how to thoughtfully recreate the look in your own home. Tip one: Don’t use all white. Add small touches of color or subtle pattern through books, plants, vases, or pillows. Keep the main focal pieces white and off-white. Tip two: It’s all about the texture. Be sure to incorporate a variety of surfaces. Animal skins (real or faux) such as sheepskin or cowhides add a softness. Shagreen adds glamour. Mix it up and the pieces will magically coordinate. Tip three: Metallics are a must. Objects, lighting and trays are easy to find at all price points. Unique pieces can be discovered at vintage stores and flea markets. Choose items that reflect your personality. Tip four: Silhouettes add dimension. Since you aren’t using color to create depth and layers, you need to include interesting shapes. For example, the

150 • Resident July 2014

brass starburst on the nightstand and the shapely vase on the console have contrasting lines to the piece of furniture on which they are placed.

HOME Tip five: A space is defined not only by the items in it, but also through lighting and scent. Utilize the natural light or create a different mood with dimmers or technology (meethue.com by Philips is the coolest product available right now). Splurge on a fancy room spray or candle... your guests will notice and so will you. It’s the small luxuries that make the difference.
