EDITOR’S NOTE
Happy November! Typically, I’d expound on the wonderful edition we have this month. And though it is a beautiful version (one of our best yet) and I’m proud to present Howard Lorber of Douglas Elliman and our Fall Real Estate Issue, I thought I’d do something different this month. I will say briefly though, that the whole Resident team is ecstatic at our results in bringing you, our readers, the most luxurious, most up-to-date information on this red-hot property market. And to snag Howard for the cover was a real coup. Mr. Lorber is a tough and seasoned negotiator and you certainly get the impression that he does not suffer fools gladly. With that being said, I’d like to introduce a poem by my late father. The impetus of including it here is that I recently found a collection of his unpublished poems (he was a lyricist for many years and dabbled in poetry). It has a cute rhyming scheme and definitely indicative of his tongue-and-check character and the season.
Loser’s Lament By Dan Pape I confess I get distressed and excessively depressed Over people who are blessed with luckiness Who forever find success at whatever they address At whatever they endeavor I would guess As if expressly ordered they are courted and rewarded And applauded by the easily impressed Though I’m talented and clever I profess that I have never Been so lucky as to ever reach my quest In spite of all my bad luck that labeled me a misfit I insist that I’ll resist all the urges that persist in me to quit And just once before I die I would like to be a winner
To have people stand and cheer me To acknowledge that I’m such a lucky guy But Murphy’s Law is boss to be reckoned with because It is the force that is source of my remorse Like when I’m feeling strong and breezing right along If something can go wrong it does of course But I don’t like complaining just because it’s always raining So I’ll rest my case explaining what I mean If I should buy a pumpkin farm and wish upon my lucky charm You can go and bet they’ll cancel Halloween

imberly Rockefeller, Cornelia Guest, Anne Hearst McInerney, Amanda Hearst, Patricia Hearst Shaw and her daughter Gillian Hearst Simonds hosted a reception for 400 at The National Arts Club to celebrate the opening of “Charles James: Beneath the Dress.” The exhibition included 100 fashion and erotic drawings by the legendary designer from the extraordinary collection of the writer and public relations guru R. Couri Hay, a group of which were recently featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s show “Charles James: Beyond Fashion.” New York Times art critic Roberta K. Smith said in her review of the NAC’s show, “Nothing reflects the complex, sometimes fraught sensibility of the great fashion designer Charles James as completely as his drawings.” Also on view were vintage photographs by Anton Perich and an important film about the designer’s life by Angela Bernhard Thomas. Guests included Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and his wife Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, The Metropolitan Museum curator Jan Reeder, author Jay McInerney, Director and Chief Coordinator of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology Valerie Steele, Nicole Miller, The Parrish Art Museum’s Director Terrie Sultan, Chair of the American Theater Wing William Ivey Long, Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, Countess LuAnn de Lesseps, Sonja Morgan, Ramona Singer, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin, the NAC’S President Chris Poe and Dianne B. The men, including Morgan O’Connor, Christopher Pape, Campion Platt, Kipton Cronkite and Dr. Kenneth Mark, wore blue jeans and dinner jackets, as James wore when he accepted the Neiman Marcus Award in 1953, which forced a horrified Mr. Marcus to declare blue jeans fashionable. Among the guests who received Patou gift bags with JOY Forever perfume and bottles of Mercedes-Benz’s new men’s fragrances were Christine Schott-Ledes and George Ledes, Janis and Charles Cecil, Nicole DiCocco, Cheri Kaufman, Dale Noelle, Dr. Nicholas Toscano, Leesa Rowland and Larry Wohl, Cassandra Seidenfeld, Shawn Kolodny and Elaine Sargent. This month, artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov have a show up at the NAC until November 29th. nationalartsclub.org “Gone Girl”’s Ben Affleck says, “God help me if I ever do another movie with an explosion in it. If you see me in a movie where stuff is exploding you’ll know I’ve lost all my money.” We’ll be watching. Leading lady Rosamund Pike, “I think I’ll be flavor of the month when I’m in my fifties.” Funny man Neil Patrick Harris, “I enjoy darker sardonic wit more than knock-knock jokes.” Fiery co-star Emily Ratajkowski, “I have great childhood memories of cow-tipping, going off and getting lost in the bog for hours, and coming home covered in dirt.” … Robert Downey Jr. stars in “The Judge,” “When you have a good script you’re almost in more trouble than when you have a terrible script.” … “The Best of

onto my mom, but the moment before I stepped onto that set something came over me. I felt fearless. I’d found my path.” Throughout her childhood, Aesha honed her craft while attending Mark Twain for the Gifted and Talented and LaGuardia Arts. She starred in school plays,
a national commercial for Honey Combs cereal, booked a recurring role on the ABC Saturday morning television series CityKids and became eligible to join the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).

Shortly after finishing high school, Aesha booked the title role of Gena in her first feature-length film Arresting Gena. She led an impressive cast of young talent including Sam Rockwell, Summer Phoenix, Adrian Grenier and Paul Giamatti. The film’s success took her to Sundance and laid the foundation for a lucrative career as an actress. Over the next ten years, Aesha booked lead and supporting roles in twenty independent films, co-starred on television episodics and was represented by top talent agencies. “ It all became second nature,” says Aesha. “I traveled to Paris, fell in love with Chanel, was a regular at Peter Lugers and partied in VIP rooms in New York. My big Hollywood break was right around the corner. Like a rollercoaster climbing up the tracks I was about to hit the top, then suddenly out of nowhere I fell off the edge.” Aesha remembers it vividly. She was awoken in the middle of the night by the sound of her father’s screaming voice. She jumped from her bed, ran down the hall and saw her mom, Mindy, lying unconscious on the bathroom floor. After months of tests, Mindy Waks was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. Aesha was forced to come to terms with the fact that she’d lose her best friend, manager and greatest supporter. She willingly put her career on hold to sit by her mother’s bedside. Mindy’s dying wish was for her daughter to never give up acting and to attend college. Soon after her mother’s death, Aesha was awarded a full scholarship and enrolled at New York University (NYU). During her last year at NYU, Aesha began dating Liam McMullan, son of New York City famed photographer Patrick McMullan. The couple soon became engaged. “I didn’t have my mom and I felt lost,” Aesha admits. “I thought that if I accepted the engagement it would somehow replace the void of loosing my mom and no longer acting.” After she earned her bachelor’s degree, Aesha began to explore other outlets of artistic expression. She wrote, modeled, sang in a band and created a collage art series dedicated to her mom. Though living life as an artist and socialite brought her joy, her relationship began to crumble. “Liam changed. We grew apart.”
Aesha continues, “ It broke my heart, because I couldn’t stand to lose anyone close to me again, but I knew I had to leave.” After her engagement ended, Aesha took time to heal and reevaluate her life.“It was the first time that I felt alone in this world,” says Aesha.“I had to make sacrifices to survive, but it enriched me and I’m a better person for it.” As part of her healing process, Aesha hosted charity events for the Women & Fashion: Film-
fest, published a health and fitness book The Model Body (now available online at amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com) and began auditioning again. Last month, Aesha returned to network television. She co-starred in an episode of FOX’s vvGotham. “The role was small, yet it was the most meaningful one I’ve ever booked,” says Aesha. “I’ve rediscovered myself and a love for acting.”

Sugar Savvy – The 6-Week Solution to Kicking Your Sugar Addiction for Life
an eye-opening, confidence-building, lifeaffirming program that will empower you from the top down and inside out.
Health and fitness pioneer High Voltage (aka Kathie Dolgin), who created the groundbreaking Energy Up! Program, is back with Sugar Savvy – a fun and empowering 6-week program to get your weight down and energy levels up.
High Voltage demonstrates just how addictive sugar really is, saying it triggers the same reward receptors as a cascade of feelgood brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine as cocaine. Science shows that when we overload on sugar our brain receptors actually change, making it hard to regulate how much we eat. And when you’re shaky, irritable and looking for your next food “fix,” you may not even realize it—but you’re hooked. In Sugar

But the foods many count on to get them there actually make them feel worse – and can lead to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, wrinkles, and even cancer. At the event, Al-Nasser re-affirmed his commitment to promoting a culture of peace, tolerance, and dialogue, an issue that he took to his heart as President of the 66th Session of the General Assembly and continues to uphold in his role as High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations. Channeling her artistic sensibility and creative entrepreneurial spirit, Jody launched Seriously Funny Gowns, a line of ornamented hospital wear that offers personalized, colorful and conversational ensembles for people who need it most, the patients. “I like to take anything negative that comes my way and turn it into something positive,” Barrett said with a smile. A native New Yorker and University of Arizona graduate with a degree in fine arts, Jody spent over ten years as an Executive Director supporting luxury brands nationwide. “I see things differently. I’ve always asked myself, ‘what would I do different to make this something unique?’” she recalls.“Having grown up with Manhattan as my playground, it taught me to think a lot and go within myself to be a bit more creative.” She is also a veteran volunteer with more than a decade of experience, lending a helping hand at numerous New York hospitals and senior living facilities including North Shore University Hospital. The society has organized over 80 cultural trips in France and the Unites States. “We try to keep the groups relatively small, so it almost feels like a family affair,” Black com-

Justin Luke Zirilli B
By Isaiah Negron
est-selling author, nightlife star and social media wunderkind Justin Luke Zirilli has continued to skyrocket towards the top in the New York City scene. As Co-Owner and President of BoiParty, throwing some of the city’s largest and most colorful gay nightlife parties with his partner, Alan Picus, Justin is no stranger to the spotlight. Since 2009, he has worked tirelessly to bring his parties to the forefront of the urban party circuit. He is also the creator of Gorgeous, Gay and TwentySomething, GG20 for short, a private Facebook group with now over 8,000 members worldwide. “Everything took off on a scale I never imagined,” Justin confides. “It’s been a great ride so far.” A Long Island native, Justin began a career in public relations before finding his calling in nightlife where he discovered his passion for promotion and social media. ”Underneath the façade, everything is business. There were a lot of cogs and wheels in motion that uniquely equipped me for nightlife,” Justin explains. “Many people expect this glam world of celebrities, sex and drugs, but if you plan on making a living off of nightlife, you have to be prepared to severely curtail those sorts of things. Nightlife is a business.” From legendary club parties pumping through the NYC night for years to his newest triumph, the resurrection of Broadway Mondays at Hell’s

Kitchen hotspot Hardware Bar at 697 10th Avenue, success seems to be a part of most everything Justin puts his distinctive touch on. “I don’t believe in five or ten-year plans,” he admits. “I believe in being immediately focused at all times and trying absolutely everything everywhere. I don’t believe it’s luck.”Justin also has a new fragrance, Pink Boi, launching November 6th at TAGG in Hell’s Kitchen.
Justin has also had tremendous success as an author, publishing six acclaimed works of gay fiction, including his best-selling novel, “Gulliver Takes Manhattan.” His seventh and most anticipated work is “The Gay Gospel,” the first ever self-help manual for gay guys in their twenties. Spanning topics such as looking for love, the fears of sex, the art of being rejected, the unspoken rules of drinking and proper break-up etiquette, Justin has tapped into a uncharted realm for the gay community and has already garnered endorsements of some big industry names, such as famed journalist Michael Musto and Tony Award winner Billy Porter, who wrote the tome’s afterward. “I wanted to write a book that showed we’re normal people too with normal people problems,” he says. “The biggest pleasure I get is from seeing someone else happy and knowing that I did something to give that happiness. I want this book to accomplish that.” Justin’s sharp wit, honest lessons and loving encouragement provide an evocative perspective through his signature pink-framed glasses on how to pilot through the first decade of adult life. “The Gay Gospel” is available in paperback and for digital download on November 18th. Trading A Volatile Market Ebola and European Weakness V
By Larry Greenfield
Most active traders lose more often than they win. Count me among them. So how do you succeed where many fail? Experience is a given but it is the ability to put size on (or more shares on) and differentiate between trades that you like versus trades that you are unsure of. Shorting stocks are an integral part of a traders arsenal but you must take care to be judicious not bet too heavy on the short side.
olatility is a stock traders best friend. In 2008 volatility was extreme, that is a number of trading sessions where buying and selling occurred at levels in excess of normal. In fact, the stock market has a specific indicator known by the short-hand ‘VIX’ or unofficially, “the fear gauge” to monitor this activity. Up until recently levels of volatility have been anemic. Volatility gives the two way trader the ability to profit from market moves wether the indices are trading up or down. The general public and in many cases the novice trader is either ignorant or afraid of trading a downward trending market. Speaking from experience by far my most memorable trades were on the short side of the market. Selling short is borrowing stock in the hope of buying it back at a cheaper price pocketing the difference. It is the riskiest trade because if you are wrong there is unlimited upside to a stock. Downside is limited to zero. Until proven otherwise we are clearly in the middle of a bullish trend. Every pundit on Television wants to be the one to call the top of the market i.e. that the value of the stock market has reached its height. It can make their careers and for some it has. However, a traders job is to have a clear mind and to

take each day on its own merits. There is one caveat though - in the back of your mind you must always be cognizant of the trend which is to the upside. This is the paradox a trader lives with. One of the first things I learned as a trader “trading is not a science” all we can do is try to put the odds on our side.
The recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa which has reached, albeit in very small dose on our shores creates a situation that no trader likes if they already have positions on unless of course they are short the market. The most likely scenario in this instance is a down move. My prediction is that as time goes on these moves will become more fleeting. The market will become increasingly immunized to these news events. All of this is contingent on the information from the medical community that the contagion is not easily spread. European economic and market weakness on the other hand will keep the shorts in play though the overall trend is up. The bottom line volatility is here to stay for the foreseeable future.

SCHOOL INTERVIEWS TO PREP OR NOT TO PREP?
By Jennifer Brozost and Vimmi Shroff f you, as a parent, are planning to have your child go through the admissions process to gain acceptance into a highlyregarded public or ongoing private school, it is imperative that you support your child, but do not over coach them on how to act, or bribe them with presents! Kids can be unpredictable, to say the least! They have good days and bad days and each has their own unique personality, attributes and well... ultimately no one is perfect. I will never forget attending my son’s interview for elementary school. My only goal was for the school to see his best traits: his politeness, intelligence and his caring nature towards other children. The interview seemingly went smoothly, but I noticed his, well, not so wonderful side emerging as we were getting ready to exit the building. He announced in the loudest voice that he did not intend to go to the school, that he “needed to pee”, and that he did not like one of the boys he had been playing with in the playgroup. Our exit from the building following this was quick! Instances like this happen. There is little we can do to control our wonderful young chil-

dren during the school application process. At some point, we have to just hope for the best and forget about encouraging them behave in a “certain way” - as this usually backfires! Kids are honest, upfront little people who wear their emotions on their sleeve and like to talk endlessly about every secret in their household. We have seen and heard this many times while working in various admissions offices.
• Instead of Disneyworld, maybe a special snack or time with a parent doing something they like if on their “best behavior”
“My mom told me if I behave, we are going to Disneyworld!”
• Tell them you will be waiting to see them when they are done and are looking forward to hearing all about what they did!
“My dad said to tell you that my favorite thing to do is to read, but I can’t remember the name of the book.” “My mom told me to tell you that you are my favorite teacher in the whole world, you are not... should I still tell you?” The truth is that the teachers who are working with your children come with a wealth of experience and knowledge. In addition, kid’s personalities and true characters tend to come out in these interviews. It is a good idea to refrain from giving your child exact instructions on how to act and what to say. Here are some tips we DO recommend:
• Be honest with your child about the expectations for behavior in any school setting • Tell your child to look at the teacher when they ask them a question so she will know he is listening
• Remind your child to smile when meeting the teachers. It really goes a long way! As education and admissions experts, we feel that honesty is the best policy. Your child will be spending a large part of their growing years in the school in which they gain an admission spot to. Explaining the rules of appropriate behavior is perfectly acceptable, but using certain false tactics to try to control your child’s performance could be detrimental in the long run! Look Your Best
with Twillory
B
By Hillary Latos
ringing a keen fashion sensibility that’s easy on the eyes as well as easy on the wallet was the idea behind Twillory which has been around since 1892 creating shirts for famous brands around the world. While first impressions can make or break deals, the creators believed that a state of dress is a state of mind, which is why they have created quality tailored dress shirts at a fraction of their competitor’s prices due to their long standing relationships with the textile mills and online direct to consumer business model. Choose from two different fits- the lean tailored fit offering a sleek, defined silhouette or the traditional fit with a forgiving and relaxed contour. To address the varied tastes of today’s modern man, the collection offers nineteen colorways and pattern variations including solids, plaid, gingham and stripes in luxurious crease resistant 2 ply Egyptian and Sea Island cotton fabrics. No detail has gone overlooked, with genuine mother-of-pearl buttons, brushed steel collar stays, inverted gussetsadorning each Twillory shirt. An eighth button has been added to secure the shirt in place, solving the problem caused by stretching or maneuvering. Here we spoke to one of the founders to hear the story of this dynamic new menswear line. “You can’t find this quality for this price anywhere. For over 100 years we have manufactured private label shirts for high end retailers such as Neiman Marcus and Barneys using the same quality fabrics for shirts that are sold for $135 and up. We saw an opportunity to offer the same product at a lower price to deliver the savings to consumers. Another aspect to our business is our charitable endeavor RE:Purpose where we have partnered with the USPS and CareerGear to help those in need. Pre paid mailers are included with every purchase where customers can send in unwanted and gently used clothing and shoes where we will launder and donate these repurposed items to CareerGear which helps men get back on their feet and prepares them for job interviews and clothing. The way you dress affects the way you feel which is the driver behind RE:Purpose. We also wanted this to be an active process rather than a passive process, and we believe that although going into your closet isn’t very time consuming it is active and creates a good vibe for you and our hope is that this charity can grow to solve these problems not only in our country but overseas. We don’t want to just give you value for the price of a shirt but bring value to your life.” For more information: twillory.com

“
o the victor belongs the spoils,” or so the old adage goes. For Howard M. Lorber, chairman of Douglas Elliman, the largest residential real estate brokerage in the New York metropolitan area and the third largest real estate company in the United States, with more than 70 offices and 4,000 real estate agents, the saying might be better worded this way: “To the successful investor belongs the best real estate.” For on this small island of ours, perhaps no one better symbolizes the dynamic, red-hot property market of New York than Lorber.

SPOTLIGHT 50 • Resident November 2014
As editor of Resident, I recently had a rare opportunity to sit down with Lorber in his office aerie for an intimate interview and photo shoot. To date, this was the most technically inclined interview I have had the pleasure of conducting. As I quickly learned, and as our readers will too, there was much to be learned from Lorber, one of today’s top titans of real estate. RESIDENT: How long has Vector (the conglomerate that owns several companies and which Mr. Lorber heads) owned Douglas Elliman? LORBER: We invested in the company,
which was then called Prudential Long Island Realty owned by Dottie Herman and a former business partner of hers. It was struggling, and so I came in, made an investment into the business and eventually bought out the other partner, and Dottie and I turned it around. Once we were into the growth phase for Prudential Long Island Realty, our strategic objective was to enter and then grow our position in New York City. It was at this point that I learned that Andrew Farkas, who controlled Insignia Financial at the time, was looking to reshuffle his investment portfolio, in which one item was the Douglas Elliman business. I ended up calling Farkas and purchased it from him. R: How long has Douglas Elliman had a presence in New York City? L: Douglas Elliman has been around since
1911, but we purchased it in 2003.
R: As chairman, what is your level of engagement in the business? L: As the Chairman of Douglas Elliman, I
am very involved in new development, marketing and sales. My team has invested in residential as well as commercial projects. My primary focus is dealing with Douglas Elliman, helping to recruit brokers, working with existing brokers, and obviously trying to bring in business.
R: Is Douglas Elliman really the largest brokerage house in New York? L: Yes we are. If you look at the broader
picture across the whole country, we have been ranked as the third largest, and the other two are companies that have franchises throughout the whole country. Right now, Douglas Elliman is in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau County, Suffolk County,

From his sky-high office overlooking Central Park, and from his posh soon-to-becompleted apartment at 432 Park Avenue, Lorber has a literally unobstructed view of all the trends of the New York real estate market. the Hamptons on Long Island, and Westchester County. I was also instrumental in opening in South Florida, since I have been living there part-time for many years. We are now in Miami, North Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and Palm Beach. We also recently opened offices in Los Angeles, and we will be opening shortly in Aspen, Colorado and Greenwich, Connecticut. The strategic reasoning behind our geographic expansion is that we want to be where our clients go, whether for vacation or because they own a property in these locations; Californians buy houses in the Hamptons and apartments in Manhattan, and Hamptons’ residents, when not enjoying the summer scene, are living in the City. The same people buy in Miami or Palm Beach. There are also a group of them, from both coasts, that purchase in Aspen. So it is a “Round-Robin” situation, watching and following where these people go to provide them real estate services wherever that might be, from our brand that is widely recognized and trusted. R: Do you see Douglas Elliman becoming a national brand? L: The Douglas Elliman name definitely resonates with all of our customers, and they do
go to our many locations. In addition, we recently finalized a partnership to conduct our international business. R: What does that partnership deal entail?
L: Knight Frank and Douglas Elliman are now partners, which provides our clientele access to their 400 offices in over 50 countries. R: So there are no franchises for Douglas Elliman? L: Correct: There are no franchises for Douglas Elliman, and no franchises for Knight
Frank. Both companies own all of their offices.
R: What do you think are the overall trends for real estate in New York; it seems to still be a very hot market? L: It is still a very good market. Land prices and the cost of development have gone up
dramatically in the last year or two. It is all about supply and demand. Developers are paying big prices to develop new sites. Obviously Downtown is booming. I think that, contrary to general impressions, there are not quite as many international buyers as people may believe, but they have been focused on acquiring condos because co-op boards have tougher standards with international buyers. We are definitely seeing international buyers for condo developments, especially around Central Park.
R: Do you think international buyers are driving up prices? L: What really helps drive the prices up in New York City are the financial buyers, success-
ful hedge funders and investment bankers—those are the ones that made huge money in the last few years, and they remain equally as important as international buyers.
R: What are the trends in actual building construction in terms of what’s being offered? L: You have to be careful size-wise; people always desire physically larger apartments. So
as a consequence, there are currently a lot of projects that feature big apartments. When designing apartments, it is important to be careful, not only of the price per square foot, but also total unit size. I am not talking about the $50- to $80-million-dollar ultra luxury units; I am talking about the $2- to $10-million range. There is only so much a buyer wants to pay for a one- or two- or three-bedroom apartment. In designing an apartment, it is important to make the units very efficient size-wise.
R: Do you think that 6,000 new apartments hitting the market will impact Manhattan’s real estate landscape? L: Not all 6,000 apartments will be going on the market at the same time, and if you
look at the inventory, their coming online will not make a big change. Again, much of the process is going to be about designing the units properly and making them attractive to a wider range of buyers. I do think that there will always be buyers across the spectrum of the market.
R: What do you think of the comments that apartments are becoming smaller? L: You can make apartments much more efficient. When you lower the physical size, you
can also lower the total unit price and make these units more affordable. In addition, mortgage interest rates are at the lowest they have been in many years, so now is a great time to buy.
R: When is the right time to buy? Is there a time to buy? L: People make purchases when they have to, or want to, and it just depends on indi-

vidual circumstances. There are still times when you can find decent deals in the resale market, especially if the property requires renovation. But at any time there is always something you can find, especially since interest rates are so low. This is a great time to buy since money is, relatively speaking, inexpensive. R: Are most purchasers, with whom Douglas Elliman deals, cash buyers? L: You generally do not have contracts,
which allow for mortgage contingencies in Manhattan; it has been a very hot market, and sellers do not want to wait for someone

Even at the high end, we have people who want to spend their money to make more money in other investments, so they go to their banks and get a mortgage. So there are definitely new mortgages being written at all levels of the market. R: How is the sales effort proceeding at 432 Park? What other marquee properties is Douglas Elliman marketing? t seems that Long Island City’s wellpublicized real estate boom is just beginning, but residential buildings began popping up more than a decade ago. “Once upon a time, Long Island City was a hotbed of industry, but over the last decade, it’s become a hotbed for residential development thanks to a 2001 rezoning” wrote Curbed.com on June 16th, 2014. Today, there are numerous rental buildings under construction in LIC, as it is typically named. TF Cornerstone, the developers of the Upper East Side’s rental building The Fairfax, has developed six amenity-driven rental buildings on the waterfront’s northern tip. 4610 Center Boulevard is the developer’s latest and final building. The 26-story glass tower contains 584 units and was designed by the international award-winning architecture firm, Arquitectonica. It offers a 24-hour concierge, state-of-the-art fitness center, and a club room. It also features private garden and landscaped terraces with cinematic river views. According to its leasing office, a 1,324 sq. ft. 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment with a balcony with direct river views was available in October for $6,000 a month. A 1,043 sq. ft. 2

bedroom 2 bath apartment with partial river views was also available for $4,575 a month. TF Cornerstone’s rental buildings include 4720, 4540, 4615, 4545 and 4630 Center Boulevard which is a luxury condominium where the monthly rent for a 2 bedroom home is between $4,950 and $5,500. Also on the waterfront, Rockrose’s 4705 Center Boulevard offers 2 bedroom
homes from $4,375 and at the nearby Avalon Riverview from $4,265. Throughout LIC rental apartments can be found in all price points including affordable housing. Hunter’s Point South is LIC’s most significant upcoming new development building. Considered the largest affordable housing complex to be built in
REAL ESTATE NYC since the 1970’s, Hunter’s Point South is a mixed-use development under construction on approximately 30 acres of prime waterfront land. According to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, this large-scale development will have up to 5,000 housing units. The majority of the units will be reserved for low-to-middle income families. The complex is being built in three phases. Phase 1 consists of 900 affordable housing units developed by the Related Companies, Phipps Houses and Monadnock Construction. According to Curbed.com, TF Cornerstone was selected to develop the 1,100-unit phase two, and the city is still planning the final phase, which will add another 3,000 units. In addition to housing, Hunter’s Point South will include retail space, community/ cultural facilities, a new school, parking and a new continuous waterfront park. 5Pointz is another noteworthy new development building in LIC. Being built where the renowned open graffiti building once stood, this mixed-use complex will contain 1,000 rental units which include 210 affordable housing units. Developed and owned by David Wolkoff, 5Pointz will also offer a 32,000-square-foot public park, 50,000-square-feet of street level retail, and a 250 space public parking garage. Long Island City offers much more than attractive rental buildings; it has an emerging arts community and a stunning riverside park. LIC is home to MoMA P.S. 1 Museum, the Noguchi Museum and the Chocolate Factory Theater. On the East
Side. The picturesque park also showcases two restored historic gantries with the word “Long Island” on them. The Pepsi Cola sign and the two gantries are important symbols of Long Island City’s industrial past and are treasured by LIC’s residents. LIC’s residents also enjoy a very efficient transportation system. The Long Island Railroad into Penn Station stops at Hunters Point Ave. The 7 train stops at the Vernon Boulevard / Jackson Ave and the Hunters Point Ave. stations, as well as the Court Square station which connects with the E and M trains. The New York Waterway’s East River Ferry, located on Gantry Plaza State Park, runs from and to Midtown and Wall Street. For those who prefer pedaling across the river, the Queensboro and Pulaski Bridges have scenic bike paths and bike lanes are found throughout LIC’s streets.
River, Gantry Plaza State Park offers welllandscaped gardens and recreational facilities that include basketball courts, playgrounds, handball courts, and a fishing pier with its own cleaning table. With the magnificent Midtown skyline as a backdrop, Gantry Plaza State Park is best known for the historic 147-foot-long Pepsi Cola sign that is viewable from Manhattan’s East
Getting to LIC by train takes less than 10 minutes, so LIC’s proximity to Midtown Manhattan has greatly contributed to its inevitable revitalization. Talking Real Estate with J/R Luxe J
ennifer Roberts and Randi Fisher of J/R Luxe, Manhattan’s newest brokerage team, answer our burning questions about hunting for the perfect Manhattan apartment, the hottest amenities in new developments and where to find that perfect four-bedroom apartment. What’s hot in the new development sector of the market? What is new and noteworthy about town?
Jennifer Roberts: On the new development side, we are seeing some very compelling and rare family-sized inventory. 20 East End Avenue, which just launched sales, is a great example uptown. With the standard apartments over 2,000 square feet, and amenities such as a wine cellar and wine tasting room, the building sets a new bar for luxury on the Upper East Side. And in Tribeca the product offering on the condo side just gets more and more interesting. One building we love is The Sterling Mason which boasts large homes and a 92Y-designed playroom, and where original brick is juxtaposed with a modern aluminum clad façade. Buyers in this wheelhouse should act fast – the market is shifting, and new development is going in the other direction. In what way?
Randi Fisher: There are incredible opportunities coming down the pike for smaller homes that are more attainably priced. Keep an eye out for new-to-market “attainable luxury” projects – it’s going to be the theme for 2015! A gem to know about is 50 Clinton on the Lower East Side – a loft-like building with primarily one- and two-bedroom homes. It’s

By W.A. Muller hitting the market next year. Instead of a focus on huge footprints, these and many more buildings we’ve heard about will be focused on efficiency, and a lot of the ‘living’ will be done in the communal parts of the building, so look out for even more attention than ever focused on rooftops, lounges and the like. That type of product will surely be absorbed quickly and is sorely needed in the city. Firsttime homebuyers and investors looking for value should keep their ear to the ground; they will have a lot more exciting options in the coming 12 to 18 months. What is different about buying or selling a home now opposed to a year ago?
Jennifer Roberts: It is definitely easier for those house hunting now than it was at this time last year but obviously that’s not saying much. Buyers are still facing tough competition for the best apartments – those reasonably priced one-bedrooms as well as three- and fourbedrooms in the best areas of the city. Now is a great time to sell but, more importantly, it won’t be this way for much longer so potential sellers should think about getting in the game before it’s too late. What are the challenges of apartment hunting these days?
Randi Fisher: We hear about taxes constantly. We aren’t seeing tax abatements for new developments nearly as much, although there are the exceptions – buildings like The Adeline in Central Harlem – that are still being granted the rare 421a tax abatement by the city. For those that are willing to go slightly further north, they will reap the benefits of lower taxes and usually common charges not to mention
the benefit of a beautiful neighborhood surrounded by three New York City parks. With condo values in Harlem surging, the neighborhood is becoming quite the investors’ market lately. What’s a fantastic listing your team is marketing right now?
Randi Fisher: We have a one-of-a-kind listing at 195 Hudson Street, a beautiful boutique building in Tribeca with soaring 11-foot ceilings and a gorgeous master suite with a custom-built dressing room. The apartment comes with huge private storage space and, more importantly, a parking space. Tell us about J/R Luxe. What makes you unique?
Jennifer Roberts: We are Coldwell Banker Previews International Property Specialists with Coldwell Banker Previews International, the luxury division of Coldwell Banker with offices in 52 countries. We provide our clients with a truly personal experience, evaluating each and every customer’s unique needs to pair the perfect buyer with the perfect home. Plus, no brokerage holds a candle to Coldwell Banker in terms of international reach – our listings are instantly seen by investors and house hunters eager to own their own piece of New York City in cities like Dubai, Shanghai and Rio de Janeiro. Lake Norman also appeals to the sporting enthusiast, as Charlotte offers NFL, NBA, baseball, and hockey teams. The educational opportunities in Charlotte are second to none, with excellent public schools, private academies, and top-notch colleges. Charlotte also offers cutting-edge medical healthcare. There are two hospitals located right in the Lake Norman region.
Lake Norman is also very well known for fishing competitions, as most weekends there are anglers competing for largemouth bass and stripers. The lake also offers about ten different restaurants and bars that the people of Lake Norman enjoy boating to on summer evenings. The Rusty Rudder in Cornelius even offers a drive-up takeout service by boat. What better way to enjoy a lovely dinner, glass of wine, and a stunning sunset than on the privacy of your boat?
Looking for more outdoor adventure? Don’t miss the nearby Carowinds Amusement Park, where there is fun to be had for people of all ages. Also, the nearby National Whitewater Center, which hosted the US Olympic team trials in 2012, offers even more outdoor fun and activities such as whitewater rafting, kayaking, zip lining, rock wall climbing, ropes challenge courses, and mountain bike trails, and is complete with a restaurant and bar. Every Thursday night of the summertime there’s a festival with live bands performing by the rapids.
Shopping in the Lake Norman area is not something to miss, as Lake Norman has the pleasure of being home to the fabulous Birkdale Village, located in Huntersville. This outdoor shopping mall has all the stores one would find in an indoor mall in a beautiful, spacious, outdoor environment with Nantucket flair, as well as unique boutiques. Each Bishops Pond interior is airy, open and dramatic with 9-to-12-foot-high ceilings, oversized windows, 4-inch wide solid hardwood stained oak floors, fireplaces with marble surrounds and open, island kitchens with custom cabinetry, marble or granite countertops and top-of-the-line appliances.
BUILDING LIFESTYLES ON THE EAST END I
f you build it will they come? In the Hamptons they do. And on the North Fork too. When my company, The Beechwood Organization, broke ground for our first luxury condominiums out East, Bishops Pond Southampton Village, many were skeptical. We bought land at the height of the downturn and were gearing up for a new style of home ownership in the venerable Hamptons.
By Steven Dubb It’s about location too. It’s a short drive to Village amenities, a bike-ride to Coopers Beach and steps from an on-property clubhouse with private fitness center, pond-side pool and tennis court.
Our first 12 homes in Aquebogue are virtually spoken for. We just bought the land for 14 new homes at Reeves. Both sites are a short and scenic drive to vineyards, farm stands, restaurants and shops near the Peconic Bay and Long Island Sound for sailing or a casinoferry ride.
The reality was a very warm welcome. The 69 villas and townhomes went from 0 to 55 sales in six months. Now, one year later, a few residences remain and we’re looking to build more. Buyers are empty nesters, multi-generational families and young professionals who want more quality time and resortstyle services. They want to downsize from estates or seek a second home without the worry of maintenance from landscaping and keeping the pool pristine to clearing snow.

Our East End homes are designed for the way people want to live and entertain today. There are open floor plans, light-filled rooms, wood floors, crown moldings, nine-foot ceilings and designer kitchens.
I like to think we don’t just build new homes. We build lifestyles.
Similarly, on the North Fork, we’re building at The Highlands Club. Each community is next to a world-class golf course, Cherry Creek on nearby Reeves Avenue and the Long Island National near Aquebogue.
Steven Dubb is a principal of The Beechwood Organization Long Island’s leading homebuilder and developer of sophisticated lifestyle communities. On the East End, he oversees Bishops Pond Southampton Village and The Highlands Clubs on the North Fork. For more information: beechwoodhomes.com

Simply a Better Sleep N
othing is more natural to us than sleep, and nothing gets better than blissful Z’s coupled with quiet night whispers. Its importance is only resonated in our continual effort in creating the perfect gadget to put our resting bodies on, namely mattresses. From the early Egyptian’s time to present day, more advanced mattress construction techniques have been tested, and new material have gone through trials; but we still aren’t satisfied, whether it’s duck down, feathers, springs or memory foams of today. And just when the public is ready to settle on this plateau of mattress innovation, and accept the complicated process of picking perfection from one of three mattress stores, Casper, whose products launched in April this year, dares to challenge the static market by injecting its own method of not only producing the mattress in the States, but also asserting control over the entire supply chain. Casper has already gained a very loyal following, particularly with the younger yet still affluent demographics, because “customers have been very vocal in telling their friends about it and customers really just find it to be super comfortable; it’s a good deal,” explains Co-Found of Casper, Philip Krim.

So how do Casper mattresses differ from any mattresses currently on the market? It starts with the material, as all Caspers are made with both latex and memory foam in what Casper likes to call a “Luxurious Marriage;” as Krim and his team,“Had some ideas about combining material that no one had ever combined before, and the result is, we’ve created the most comfortable mattress of all time!”
memory foam provides firm support, the latex foam layer keeps it cool and gives the perfect bounce that most foam mattresses lack. Casper’s control over its supply chain allows for lower prices, but it doesn’t stop there. The mattress, made by hand in America, adopts a direct sale to consumer strategy, and is delivered both locally in New York, as well as nationally through UPS. Because of the material choice, the mattress is able to fit into a mini-fridge sized box and is delivered easily. As for being located in New York, Krim says that he and his team “Love being a made in New York company, and [he doesn’t] think there’s a better place on earth to start a consumer-focused technology enabled company.”
The sleep surface of the Casper conforms to the human body with very minimal sinkage and at the same time relieves pressure from the hip and shoulder areas. And while the
While savvy Manhattanites are slowly catching up to the trend and take that leap onto the new level of heightened sleep quality, Casper is busy with work and “[has] a new product that will be coming out down the road. ”Krim says hopefully, “It’s still very early. We have a long way to go.” For more information: casper.com

The Black Velvet beer cocktail originated in London in 1861and is generally made with Guinness and Champagne‌ yet the color combo of the lovely libation has lived on in furniture design. The contrast of the light wood tones with the lush dark leathers, velvets and lacquers is appealing for modern living spaces. Mix carefully and enjoy!

Kudos to Crudos By Peizhao Sun

ining is quite like fashion. While designers map out the season’s new black, chefs dig through markets for the“it”ingredients; however, regardless of how many shades of lime or sapphire later, black still holds its supreme throne for elegance and poise. Though it may not return every season, it’s never out of style; and at Wayfarer on 57th street, seafood is then, the black on the runway everyone cherishes. Housed inside the Quin Hotel, the bi-level restaurant serves high-quality oceanic delicacies with sophistication and frshness. If fish was never an item in your dining Rolodex, at the Wayfarer, you will have plenty of opportunities to say kudos to crudos. Sitting below Central Park, the Wayfarer is situated right on 6th avenue. Housed inside the newly opened, five-star luxury hotel —the Quin, the restaurant features a 3,700 square foot, 130-seat dining room. Adorned in gorgeous leathers, the sexy dining room dons a new-old hybrid decor, with warm-colored banquettes and classy wooden furnishing that draws inspirations from the 1970s’disco theme, as well as the classic “Old”New York of the 1800s’. Seconds within the establishment, guests’attentions are immediately snatched by the amount of fascinating popart pieces and the accompanying atmosphere. Art continues in the lounge on the

second floor, complementing the subtle and elegant space. While art rules the decor at the Wayfarer, fish reigns supreme. Crafted by none other than Braden Reardon, the menu sports high-end seafood dishes with such focus that out of the nine sections, eight are more or less dedicated to the little black dress that is fish. Under the Fish & Shellfish category, an exciting San Francisco-style Cioppino is already a hit among loyal followers; and for those seafood connoisseurs, the Royale fulfills the ultimate seafood indulgence, serving three platters filled with oysters, clams, mussels, lobster, scallops, crab, tuna and hamachi. The grand champion, however, is in fact the Nova Scotia Lob-
ster; the 2lb lobster is split and roasted whole and is served with lemon beurrenoisette. Accompanying the impressively seafoodheavy menu is an equally spectacular drinks menu crafted by mixologist Christian Sanders. Custom-made especially for the Wayfarer, the cocktail menu boasts drinks like the Columbus Side Car, highlighted with apricot liqueur and fig bitters, or the Man About Town. Whether it’s the black on the runway, or the fish on the table, the Wayfarer at the Quin Hotel never disappoints with its chic and elegant style. dient-driven menu sports dishes possessing complementing flavors and textures, with apparent Asian influences, which show up in many dishes. Perilla’s spicy duck meatballs, which has gained wide recognition for its incredibly balanced flavor, is served with mint cavatelli, water spinach and quail egg. The egg enhances the overall dish as the yolk adorns the meatball with a thick, gorgeous sheen.
eturning from winning a hit reality show, for some, is almost always followed by some unnecessary flashy, and public stuntthat tries to prolong the fame. Though true with America’s many small screen favorites, Chef Harold Dieterle, went with the road less travelled. His first restaurant, Perilla, in the West Village, is everything you love and want in a true neighborhood joint, rid of the flamboyant; focusing on great service, great food and great times. As Perilla enters its 7th year, it continues its morecomfort-than-glamour atmosphere on Jones Street, while serving quality cuisine.
Over at the entree section, the grilled prime Creekstone hanger steak is the clear favorite among regulars, as the steak comes tender and charred. The nicely sliced steak is also paired with a red shallot puree, and comes with sunchoke creamed spinach. Perilla’s obsession with duck doesn’t stop at the meatball either. The roasted duck breast comes in two flavorful and juicy wedges, and is served with sarladaise potato, kohlrabi, braised endive and fig.
The restaurant features a full bar that screams neighborhood, as well as 18 tables that spread to the back. The long dining room space is adorned with chic yet simple paintings. Towards the back, a row of half moonshaped booths line the wall and sit under warm, dimmed lights. The dining room dons a sophisticated, yet relaxed look, with handsome zebrawood tables and unpretentious decors. A welcoming and soft lighting greet guests when they arrive, and with dusk near and candles lit, diners’ whispers accompany the romantic aroma. With a casual glance at the space, one thing quickly becomes apparent; the simplicity central to the decor at Perilla is both endearing and elegant.

Serving simple, down to earth cuisine that amazes with the fresh ingredients and East-influenced spices, Perilla continues to win over regulars and new guests alike in the West Village Neighborhood spot. The menu carries the same modest tone as it serves what chef Harold Dieterle likes to call, seasonal American, with refreshing ingredients and season-appropriate spices. The ingre-

Relax Manhattan W
e’ve come to an age of mass produced, pseudo-authentic laid-backness. The bustling Bedford Avenue restaurants, though quirky, “vintage” and well designed, somehow still miss that coziness, as well as the familiar and friendly, non-pretentious atmosphere. Is there such thing as trying too hard to not try hard? At least, when all else fails your yearning for a spot truly nonchalant yet still retains Manhattan elegance, there’s always Red Cat in Chelsea, whose signature ambience has almost made a name of its own. The long-standing establishment and its well-deserved fame only prove its status as the go-to restaurant for a night of comfort, good chats and good food. The warm restaurant’s welcoming and gleeful interior springs directly from the red in Red Cat, with scarlet-colored walls and crisp leather booths. Simplicity dominates the cozy space, as the decor possesses little pretension, rather, it resembles that of a familiar neighborhood joint from New England. At the same time, however, no neighborhood restaurant champions the perfectly balanced environment like Red Cat, cozy and sexy, laid-back and efficient. As delectable aromas permeate, warm lighting accompanies sophisticated conversations. Upon arrival, diners are greeted by staff who providegenuine interest in the guest’soverall enjoyment, which is in accordance with owner-chef Jimmy Bradley’s philosophy. The best thing about Red Cat, however, is without a doubt its consistently delicious food, which is New American with a twist. Chef Michael

Cooperman, trained at The Modern, brings a focus on the detail while maintaining the Red Cat signature menu; it results in a precise balance in the seasoning, as well as tender textures. With a history of 15 years and a loyal following, several items on the menu have already become crowd-favorite among regulars. The Light Tempura of Green Beans, served with sweet hot mustard dipping sauce, is flavorful, simple and is a perfect accompaniment with a cocktail. The refreshing quick sauté of zucchini is paired with toasted almonds and pecorino, and is fittingly appetizing. The fluke crudo has a freshness that’s augmented by the sour tomatillo, basil, lemon verbena and tomato.
In the entree section, grilled heritage pork is clearly the pleaser. The pork chop is flavored with
spices yet still retains its natural taste, while all natural chicken is served with arugula, radish, grilled lemon, and salsa verde. Though long-standing, Red Cat in Chelsea channels freshness continually. Serving New American cuisine among a passionate, red environment, Red Cat truly defines the Manhattan casual indulgence.

Feasting on Kobe K
obe beef is no joke. Known for its flavor, tenderness and fatty, wellmarbled texture, the Japanese delicacy is marveled at also for its incredible rarity, as Kobe beef’s annual production is as low as some 4,000 heads. For its very rarity, Kobe beef hasn’t been exported at all, until recently in 2012. However, though with exportation ban lifted and the delicacy’s celebrity rings throughout the world, less than a handful of restaurants have been awarded certifications from the Kobe Beef Distribution & Promotion Council to serve legitimate, 100% high quality Kobe beef; which brings the good news — being one of the few certified restaurants, New Yorkers finally can indulge in Kobe at 212 Steakhouse. Though sitting on restaurant studded East 53rd street, 212 Steakhouse stands out among others not only for its top of the grade steaks and matching high-quality service, which have earned the restaurant a name among steak-connoisseurs, its unpretentious atmosphere and lighthearted environment has also earned the restaurant a loyal following. The Kobeserving spot dons a rich and sophisticated look with dark wood and leather furnishing.

Minimalistic art pieces hang loosely around while ambient lighting illuminates the 100seat restaurant. The simplicity in decor gives the restaurant a chic and seductive modernity that allows guests’ attention to flow to the wide-array of gorgeously prepared Kobe, wagyu and seafood. The attention is, of course, deservingly on the Kobe beef as owner Nikolay Volper has completed the extensive training in Japan for certification. The understanding of the rare delicacy granted by this long training process is then translated into proper preparation and presentation of Kobe steaks at 212 Steakhouse.
Wanting to offer something that’s unique and outstanding, Volper has put together a menu that showcases the Kobe specialty, as well as premium Japanese wagyu, wagyu hybrids from Australia and the U.S. and dry aged USDA beef. Kobe beef at 212 comes in three types — ribeye, striploin and tenderloin. Aside from the Kobe wagyu, 212 also offers Australian, American and Japanese wagyu steaks ranging from porterhouse to strip loin. The same desire of wanting to create something unique resonates in the wine selection as well as the rest of the menu. Instead of serving a classic steakhouse favorite, creamed spinach, 212 serves a delicious spinach soup for example. At the steakhouse, rarely seen wines are also offered by the ounce. Serving up real Japanese Kobe in Midtown Manhattan, 212 Steakhouse is for sure the spot New Yorkers seeking quality, taste and authenticity need! 212 Steakhouse 316 East 53rd Street New York, NY 10022 212.858.0646

Contemporary Dining with a Twist By W. A. Muller
-Bar Steak and Lounge is not your average New York City Steakhouse. Located in the comfortable Upper East Side neighborhood filled with small quiet restaurants, T-Bar is a fun and vibrant atmosphere with a modern twist on great traditional American steakhouse. Established in October 2007, this restaurant brings a whole new crowd of people rushing up to the Upper East Side. Owned by restaurant veteran from the Lenox Room, Tony Fortuna, and managed by Sara Ruiz, this team has successfully made outstanding food even better in a contemporary way. T-Bar does not have the dark and ominous typical steakhouse ambiance. Instead it uses bright greens and oranges with straight modern lines mixed with eccentric patterns. Glass light fixtures echo off of the adorned designs effortlessly. Every room of the restaurant uses different textures that complement each other making a new and exciting environment for an overall dining experience. Dark wood details with white tile accents against the bright colors give a clean fashionable look that can draw in any type of crowd.

Executive chef Ben Zwicker, also the previous chef at the Lenox Room, has undeniably taken the menu to new heights. He has formulated sauces such as the béarnaise and au poivre that will give any steak an extra kick. They offer a lunch, dinner and brunch menu. Signature appetizers include Yellowfin Tuna Tartare and Seared Spanish Octopus, four prime cuts of steak and Crispy Long Island Duck for entrees, and the always satisfying Banana Parfait Mille Feuilles or Strawberry Sundae for dessert. or November we wanted to celebrate the vast culinary scene New York has to offer. From iconic spots that have shaped the restaurant scene to perfect weekend brunch spots and modern interpretations of our favorite fare to haute vegan and Asian cuisine to cozy comfort and healthy fare, it’s all about the myriad of choices the greatest city in the world has to offer.

Following an extensive renovation post Hurricane Sandy, the iconic and romantic Water Club has been renovated and restored to its former grandeur. Touting a “dock to dish” casual dining menu, enjoy the raw bar and daily catches of the day in an atmosphere that feels like you’re sailing on a river cruise along the East River with unobstructed views. The program features fresh catch BBQ with local grilled seafood specialties like lobster, clams, fish and scallops delivered straight from Montauk to the restaurant eliminating the middleman stages of a fish market. A perfect spot for happy hour during the week or their famous Sunday brunch which includes a lobster special complete with mashed potatoes and key lime pie, this nautical themed famed eatery is one of Manhattan’s most beloved institutions.

KOA KOA is named after its seasoned restaurateur owner Keiko Ono Aoki, which was designed to bring modern Haute Chinese to NYC. To complete this venture she tapped Japanese Iron Chef Yuji Wakiya to create a menu that fused the best of Japanese and Chinese cuisine. The first thing to revolutionize an Asian staple food was to create a new kind of gluten free ‘Sorba’ noodle dish made with an exclusive and succulent broth created daily with Osakan soy milk and soup stock. Creative western additions to this popular Asian dish include the spicy dandan noodles with soy milk, roast beef sorba with seared steak, bleu cheese and crispy onion rings, as well as a delicious lobster sorba. Other timeless Chinese dishes that demonstrate an Iron Chef’s talents include the delicately crisped and spiced Bang Bang chicken, yuzu crispy shrimp, and the crispy crab wontons laced with a sweet chili dipping sauce. Set in a sleek and sexy space with dark wood and cozy banquettes that can double as a lounge, the restaurant is a beautiful as the cuisine.
Communal Oven & Earth Healthy eating has never been easier on the Upper West Side thanks to Communal Oven & Earth. The menu was created around locally sourced and seasonal ingredients and based on health purposed ingredients- grains, fruits, and veggies. Empower the body with one of their many fresh vegetable juices and smoothies with different benefits whether you are looking to nurture the nervous system, liver, or boost immunity. Other healthy minded options are the delicious slow roasted vegetables drizzled with garlic, pesto and a sundried tomato tapenade, baked empanadas filled with spicy chicken, spinach or paprika beef, and signature communal flatbreads with mouthwatering toppings such as Portobello mushrooms, margarita, or arugula, pear and gorgonzola. Perfect anytime of the day, the décor reflects a casual green Northern California aesthetic with Upper West Side sophistication.

Tertulia at Harding’s What can be better than fine dining married with classical chamber music? This was the brainchild of music aficionados Julia Villagra and James Austin Smith who felt compelled to design a chamber music series that would attract her peers where they can enjoy drinking, eating, socializing with live music. The upcoming season of Tertulia presents works spanning over four centuries performed by a different musical group or ensemble, paired with different curated menus of contemporary American fare at the Flatiron favorite, Harding’s. Ticket pricing starts at $25.00 for general entry, $80 for dinner, and goes up to $140.00 for a drink and front row seating with a concert interspersed between the three course meal serving main courses such as Atlantic Branzini, crab cakes, veal and ricotta meatballs with shaved pecorino finished with a satisfying dessert. After a seven-year hiatus, Blossom on Columbus has reopened on the Upper West Side with a 2,000 square foot dining mecca for vegan enthusiasts. Creative takes on vegan cuisine include exclusive signature dishes such as zucchini napoleon, stuffed poblano peppers, vegetable lasagna, pintxos avocado with onion and capers, and flautas filled with sweet potatoes, black beans or guacamole. This fall, owners Ronen Seri and Pamela Blackwell are expanding their menu to include tapas and brunch favorites that dispel any doubts that vegan cuisine sacrifices taste. Customer favorites include the soy bacon burger, mushroom ravioli with truffle “butter” sauce, trumpet mushroom caviar, dill crème salmon tofu with trumpet mushrooms and leek fennel compote that demonstrate Executive Chef Ramiro Ramirez’ culinary talents that elevates vegan cuisine to a new gastronomic level.

Café el Presidente As a sister successor to the popular Nolita taqueria, owner Dario Wolos had a bigger vision in mind when opening Café El Presidente in the Flatiron. Designed after a 1950s style Mexican cafe, with every detail attended to from the white ceramic tiles counters, checkerboard floors, plastic beige diner plates, exposed brick walls, and open air kitchen. Though the interior is recreated from the past the menu is a contemporary twist on the Mexican staple food- tacos. One of the things that put Tacombi on the map was their delicious flour tortillas made in house with a proprietary recipe using three kinds of flours and a healthy serving of lard while the corn tortillas are vegetarian. On special occasions try chef Jason DeBriere’s specialty of the house is the pork shank adobo, the menu staple, which has been slow, cooked over 24 hours as well as the tacos al pastor with spit roasted pork paired with pineapples, onion and cilantro. Other mouthwatering favorites are the crispy cod fish tacos, ceviche, homemade guacamole, and quesadillas made with Chihuahua cheese and sweet charred corn and roasted poblano. Open daily from breakfast to dinner, get a healthy start to the day with one of their fresh pressed juices from the colorful ‘frutas naturales’ bar.

Isola Trattoria & Crudo Inspired by the Amalfi Coast, Italian Riviera and Sicily, IsolaTrattoria&Crudo Bar in the Mondrian Hotel captures the essence of this otherworldly area through their flavorful Italian cuisine and lush greenhouse setting that was modeled after the famous Boboli Gardens in Florence. A magical place for brunch, the 5,000 square foot greenhouse brings the outdoors in with hanging plants, a glass ceiling, and dramatic crystal chandeliers. Dushi Curacao T
By Hillary Latos
hough the country of Curacao suffers from the “homonym syndrome” often getting confused with the local orange bitter liqueur or nearby Venezuelan metropolis Caracas, this cosmopolitan Dutch Antilles island is one of the jewels of the Caribbean. Throughout the island you may also hear the local colloquialism “dushi” which unlike its North American heterograph ‘douchy,’ is actually a term of endearment meaning sweet, which perfectly suits Curacao. As a true melting pot in the Caribbean, Curacao is home to over fifty nationalities, with African and Caribbean roots as well as the prevalent Dutch and European influences that reverberate through the island that is reflected in its culture and cuisine. As Aruba is influenced by American culture, Curacao feels like the ‘Holland of the Tropics’ with a very European and Dutch vibe, marked by small cafes and architecture carefully preserved in the past. A prime example is the UNESCO World Heritage capital of Willemstad with the colorful and picturesque 17th century Dutch buildings along the wharf. Meander down cobblestone streets and relive the

history of this colonial town by foot. Visit the lively floating market in Punda where locals shop from the Venezuelan schooners selling the catch of the day as well as local fruits, vegetables and flowers. Eat with the locals Marshe Bieuw, Old Market, a sort of food court with different stalls offering local fare that’s cooked in front of you. Ad-
mire the view from both sides of the harbor on the rotating Queen Emma Bridge that links the Punda to the Otrabanda with the Rif Fort which were once soldier’s barracks that have been reimagined as a unique shopping and dining complex. Dine at the famous Restaurant and Café Gouverneur de Rouville with panoramic views over the
TRAVEL colorful waterfront. Housed in the former governor’s residence dating back to the 1800s, locals and tourists come for specialties such as Karni Stoba- a spiced Curacao beef stew, fish stew and other locally caught seafood with a Caribbean flair. The Motown soul bar and potent rum and Curacao drinks keeps the lively crowd going to the wee hours of the night, while the romantic soft lit courtyard is a perfect spot to unwind with that special someone. For authentic Dutch Indonesian cuisine, the zen like Tempo Doeloe is perched atop a hill offering a panoramic view over the bay making it a perfect spot to catch the sunset while enjoying a delicious array of delicacies. For nightlife, visit the colorful district of Pietermaai. With architecture similar to New Orlean’s garden district, these former mansions fell into disrepair but have recently been renovated and painted in a sunny Caribbean palette with shops and restaurants reflecting a bohemian spirit. Soak in the chill European vibe of the island at the gorgeous Saint Tropez Ocean Club located in Pietermaai. Awash in all white with lounge music in the background and the ocean below it feels like you could be in Miami or the Cote d’Azur. If a picture is worth a thousand words, the 38 coastal beaches of Curacao are worth a million. The island is known for its abun-
dance pristine white sandy beaches with warm and calm water in varying hues of aquamarine and cobalt. The best beaches of the island are in the remote Wild West End offering unparalled diving and snorkeling. Finding these quiet and uninhabited snorkeling spots can be difficult to navigate but well worth the effort and best reached by car. Take the time to experience the power of nature at the Shete Boka National Park with its awe inspiring caves
and otherworldly landscape. One of the most popular beaches is in the upscale Jan Thiel residential neighborhood with plenty of lounge chaises and beachside cafes overlooking the bay. Dine on the sand at Zanzibar- a charming spot reflecting the warmth and coziness of East Africa serving an international menu of specialties along with the best pizza on the island. For luxury apartment style living within walking distance of the beach is the
Livingstone Jan Thiel Resort. Set amongst a lush tropical garden are well equipped one to two bedroom villas that offer an expansive terrace and kitchen making it a perfect home away from home to relax and enjoy an extended holiday. With its central location you can explore the charming area of Jan Thiel or simply laze by the stunning pool. The biggest festival of the island, and possibly in the entire Caribbean region is the Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival held every August. Celebrating the best in pop, soul, R&B, jazz and everything in between, this event has grown exponentially each year attracting world class headliners and music legends such as Bruno Mars, Janelle Monae, Rod Stewart, Smoky Robinson, Nile Rodgers, Mana and more. Historians often credit the meaning of Curacao to be the “heart” in Portuguese with its central location as a place of trade drawing explorers, slave owners, pirates and opportunistic entrepreneurs, but today it symbolizes where your heart will stay once you visit this beautiful and unspoiled gem of an island. Getting to this slice of paradise from New York City has never been easier as Jet Blue is launching the first direct route from JFK to Curacao this December. For more information: curacao.com

Swahili, Kifarumeans means rhinoceros. This private residenceis situated on top of a mountain overlooking the 55,000 acres of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. When Ralph Lauren brought his family on safari, they stayed at Kifaru House, which has a staff of 18. This chic compound is made up of six cottages but they only accept one family at a time. The Conservancy’s core mission is to protect the 120 rhino on their preserve, including 60 of the world’s last 660 East African black rhinos. Poachers kill these magnificent creatures to harvest their horns, which in powder form is considered an aphrodisiac. Here, every rhino has its own, armed “babysitter,” who carries a transistor radio that plays music so their charges know they are nearby and safe. The Conservancy is also a haven for 70 other different types of mammals, rare birds and exotic flowers. British Princes William and Harry spent a month at Lewa building roads and helping the veterinarians care for the wildlife. Gorillas in Rwanda We flew into Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, to track the last of the 800 mountain gorillas left in the world. We drive to the charming Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge in the foothills of the volcanic Virunga Mountains that stretch through Rwanda. We are here to encounter the legendary Silverback Gorillas, which the country considers a national treasure. There are now just 18 families of gorillas made up of 12 to 20 members remaining here. After a hearty breakfast, we are briefed on the dos and don’ts of meeting with our forebears in the forest.
Although we will get within six-to-20-feet of these incredible creatures, our hosts’ warn us to not touch the gorillas-even if they touch you. This is not because of the danger they present to you-but the danger we present to them. Gorillas are susceptible to human diseases. We are outfitted in gators and gloves to avoid the stinging nettles and thorn covered bushes we will encounter on our trek through the thick African brush. The Sabyinyo Family is the oldest gorilla family and possesses the largest Silverback named Guhondo. He is a living, breathing King Kong. For the trek we hire porters, who, for $10 a piece, carry all your gear, and, if necessary, they will even carry you to the gorillas.
You amble through picturesque farmlands planted with potatoes, wheat and fields of daisies. Once you tiptoe across a tightrope made of four slim, unlashed logs placed precariously over a rushing river, you are in the jungle. It is here that you stroll along one of the most beautiful paths on the planet, bordered by an enormous grove of bamboo trees featuring sunlight streaming through the leaves. Once through this oasis your tracker’s job is to locate the gorillas. They use their machetes to cut a narrow trail up what can be steep terrain to where the constantly moving gorillas, make a new nest every night. When you get close to the great apes, your escort takes you to visit your family...alone and without a weapon. When you encounter them, you will find them surprisingly docile and hospitable…if you play by the rules. If a Silverback thinks you are getting too close to his offspring or harem, you must act submissive, avert his gaze and emit a slow grunt-sign which in gorilla language means ‘I’m no threat.” Wise men don’t confront a gorilla. There is no single adventure on earth that can change your relationship with the universe like a safari. Africa, go before its too late. California Dreaming S
anta Monica is one of those places that has the best of all worlds- the convenience of an egalitarian city with direct access to the beach and its cool ocean breezes without the smog, congestion or pretension of its Westside counterparts. Though Baywatch created a stereotype of Santa Monica as a beachside town with ripped lifeguards and buxom blondes saving the world one swimmer at a time, this former resort town has a rich history from the landmarked turn of the century historic pier, the Third Street Promenade, and a thriving art district, proving that there’s more to Southern California than Hollywood and Beverly Hills. The best way to explore the coastline is along the beachside bike path that meanders through a backdrop seen in hundreds of films and tv shows stretching from the Palisades to the flashy Marina del Rey. Pass by multi million dollar beach cottages and admire the colorful characters of Venice’s Muscle Beach , explore the quaint Venice canals, and stroll on the uber cool Abbott Kinney Blvd dotted with art galleries, specialty clothing shops, and outdoor cafes that embraces the boho attitude of the area.
