WORKING WITH JEFFREY
"What did you love most about working with Jeffrey? How did this experience shape your career?”
Our Founder, Jeffrey, was appreciative, courteous, and honorable, as well as curious, dedicated, and fun. He led by example and always wanted the studio to push design boundaries, giving us creative freedom and collaborative support.
Reflecting on the past twenty years, during which we’ve been incredibly fortunate to work so closely alongside him, we’ve continued to practice what he instilled in us: work and collaborate by putting colleagues and clients first, mentor and support young and rising talent, and create inviting and memorable spaces across hospitality, entertainment, residential, and commercial practice areas.

VISIONARY LEADERSHIP
"JBI is a firm that merges the precision of architecture with the sensuality of form, bringing emotion to modernism. Can you discuss the evolution of this signature style and how you each have helped to maintain its integrity while the business grows?"
We wouldn’t say we have a signature style per se, but Jeffrey was both an architect and an artist; he brought an expressive and thoughtful outlook to interior design. He put his emotions and the feelings of others first when conceiving and designing new restaurants, resorts, residences, and offices.
However, each of us brings unique skillsets and perspectives to the table—from layout and planning to materials and colors and diplomacy and relationships—and combined, they reinforce the studio’s aesthetic and style and Jeffrey’s sensitivity and passion.
INSPIRATIONAL SOURCES
"With a vast array of projects, from vibrant New York restaurants to luxurious international resorts, what were some ways Jeffrey inspired you to do your best work? How do you continually find new sources of creativity and innovation in your work?”
On every business trip, whether it be a neighboring city like Boston, an island in the Caribbean, or as far as China and South Korea, Jeffrey made sure there was time to explore and discover new locations and regions. He wanted everyone to go for walks, take pictures, try new restaurants and foods, and enjoy an after-work drink at a fun bar.
He loved to read and research, and our studio has an extensive library of art, architecture, design, culinary, and travel books that anyone can grab and examine.
So, as Partners, we will continue to push the studio to be curious, inquisitive, and open by constantly exploring, questioning, and studying.

BALANCING ARTISTRY AND ARCHITECTURE
"The firm seamlessly blends the warmth of artisanal techniques with the discipline of modern architecture. How did Jeffrey balance these sometimes contrasting elements in his projects, and what is the collaborative process like within your team to achieve this harmony?"
Jeffrey attended The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in his early years, which encouraged collaboration between the art and architecture schools. His first signature restaurants, like Bar Lui and China Grill, featured his handblown glass and his friends’ artwork and murals. He, therefore, naturally built a studio of diverse creatives, which includes architects, interior designers, artists, brand strategists, culinary experts, etc.
Working with individuals from different backgrounds, generations, and training, the collaborative process at JBI is built upon an openness to new ideas and a willingness to incorporate them into the pursuit of pushing boundaries and creating something new. We thrive on curiosity, strong imagery, and playful ideas, inviting our entire team to be a part of our design journey.
THE ROLE OF ART IN YOUR WORK
"Jeffrey wasn’t only an architect but also an artist who enjoyed sculpting with molten glass. How did his passion for art influence his architectural designs, and in what ways did he integrate his artistic sensibility into projects?"
Jeffrey was incredibly passionate about glass blowing and was a supportive member of UrbanGlass, a non-profit organization dedicated to the art of glass blowing, and served on their board for nearly forty years. Throughout his career, he was known to personally hand blow light fixtures or accents for restaurants, prototypes for resorts, and collaborate with glass artists. For example, he worked alongside KEEP to create a chandelier of 180 multi-colored handblown glass bulbs in downtown Brooklyn.

SUSTAINING INNOVATION
"The design world is constantly evolving with new trends and technologies. As leaders in the field, how do you ensure that Jeffrey Beers International stays at the forefront of innovation while keeping true to the studio’s ethos?"
We’ve been fortunate to work with so many individuals from different backgrounds, generations, and training; the collaborative process is built upon an openness to new ideas and a willingness to incorporate them into the pursuit of pushing boundaries and creating something new. We thrive on curiosity, strong imagery, and playful ideas.
LOOKING FORWARD
" Looking ahead, what do you each envision for the firm? Are their new projects that excite you the most, and how do you envision the future of architecture and design?"
In the last three months, we have had several incredible and diverse projects open, including Inspire Entertainment Resort in South Korea, the luxury hotel and casino Fontainebleau Las Vegas, and Sun Princess, Princess Cruises’ newest and largest ship ever to sail the oceans.
As we reflect on the future, our design goal is to continue to make it about human and personal experiences. The Cove at Atlantis Resort demonstrates the importance of timelessness. One West End residential tower offers a curbside to-pillow experience, Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen in Las Vegas provides an opportunity to feel drama and culinary passion, Jay-Z’s Roc Nation offices in New York provide collaborative meeting spaces and an incredible art collection, while Estiatorio Milos by Costas Spiliadis and Café Boulud by Daniel Boulud is a reminder of our lasting friendships and relationships with our supportive clients and collaborators.

Transforming Spaces with Elegance
DLT INTERIORS
Creative Journey from NYC to Miami
By Hillary Latos
Discover how Debbie Travin's DLT Interiors merges classic and modern designs to craft bespoke luxury environments, turning client visions into exquisite realities.

PROFILE | RESIDENT
DLT Interiors is a renowned interior design firm known for its exceptional expertise in creating custom, high-end luxury interiors. With offices in both New York and Miami, they have built a reputation for transforming clients' dreams and ideas into remarkable spaces that beautifully reflect their individual style and environment.
Recently, Resident Magazine had the privilege of interviewing the founder and lead designer of DLT Interiors, Debbie Travin. During the interview, they delved into the fascinating world of interior design and gained insights from Debbie's wealth of experience and creative vision.
Debbie, you are originally from NYC, and relocated to Miami, Florida. Tell us how that is going. Do you like working in South Florida and how does it compare to working with New York clients?
It has been an absolutely incredible experience, especially considering the fact that many of my clients from New York are now making the move down to Florida or investing in second or third homes in the area. As a result, I have been fortunate enough to have multiple projects right here in Florida, while still continuing to serve clients in New York, particularly in Manhattan and The Hamptons.
In addition to the influx of clients from New York, I have also had the pleasure of working with individuals from various other locations such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Greenwich (CT), Scarsdale (NY), Nashville (TN), and even Mexico City. It is truly amazing to have such a diverse and wonderful clientele from all across the country and beyond.

How do you describe your design style?
We aim to create spaces that exude a sense of warmth, sophistication, and comfort while embracing modern design principles. By combining classic design principles with innovative ideas, we strive to deliver exceptional results that transcend passing trends and last the test of time.
Do your clients get involved with the overall design process?
During the initial stages of the design process, I prioritize listening carefully and understanding my clients' design preferences and requirements. By carefully listening to their vision, likes, and dislikes, I can ensure that I capture their unique style and transform their dream home into a reality.
Once I have a clear understanding of their aspirations, we proceed to design the entire home with a focus on cohesiveness and flow. Our goal is to create a space that seamlessly integrates each element, ensuring a harmonious and balanced aesthetic throughout. We offer a comprehensive turn-key service, where our clients can move into their dream homes with only suitcases to unpack.
Our attention to detail is unparalleled. From making the beds with fresh bedding and pillows to hanging artwork and mirrors, installing lighting and wallpaper, and accessorizing every console, side table, and shelf, we leave no stone unturned. Our clients essentially move into a "model home," where every aspect is thoughtfully designed to cater to their specific needs.
One of the most rewarding moments is the "big reveal," when our clients get to see their newly designed homes for the first time. Seeing their surprise and excitement is rewarding and truly gratifying!
What makes DLT Interiors different and unique from other interior design firms?
From the moment we begin a project, we take on the responsibility of managing all details. This includes purchasing and ordering numerous items, coordinating logistics and deliveries, and maintaining daily communication with contractors and tradespeople.

By overseeing every aspect of the process, from inception to completion, we guarantee a seamless execution of the design vision, surpassing our clients' expectations. Our commitment lies in delivering not only exceptional design but also a seamless and enjoyable experience for our clients. We take immense pride in going above and beyond to create spaces that are not only beautiful but also functional and personalized to our client’s individual needs and preferences. Our ultimate goal is to transform their dream home into reality.
How did you reinvent yourself from a fulltime mom of three kids to a female entrepreneur starting her own business?
It’s common for people to feel apprehensive about pursuing a career in a competitive industry like interior design due to fears of failure. Here are my 7 essential guidelines for building a thriving interior design business with a strong foundation:
1. Take action without hesitation. Waiting until you feel fully prepared will only delay your progress.
2. Believing in yourself and having self-confidence is crucial for entrepreneurs. Trust in your abilities to overcome obstacles and achieve success.
3. Focus on your own path. Avoid comparing yourself to competitors and instead focus your energy on delivering excellence in your work. Your unique approach will set you apart.
4. Nurturing positive relationships with clients, vendors, and colleagues is essential. Treating others with kindness and respect not only fosters a pleasant work environment but also elevates your professional reputation.
5. Never compromise your self-worth. Maintain confidence in your abilities, ensuring that clients recognize and respect your expertise.
6. Persistence is key to reaching your goals. Dedicate yourself to consistent effort and resilience in the face of challenges.
7. Lastly, embracing the process of running a business with enjoyment and maintaining a positive mindset is vital. Finding joy in the journey allows you to navigate challenges with enthusiasm and resilience to keep going!
Describe a typical day in the life of DLT INTERIORS

This simple practice sets a positive tone for the day ahead.
Regardless of the demands of my busy schedule, I prioritize exercise and well-being. I am willing to put in extra hours, even working late nights and weekends, to ensure that everything is completed. Whether it's an invigorating run along the beach or taking a yoga class to calm stress and improve my focus, these activities lay the foundation for a fulfilling and productive day.
As the lead designer at DLT Interiors, I have the privilege to pursue my passion of transforming spaces into dream homes for our clients. From personally overseeing every aspect of the renovation process during client site visits to exploring the DCTOA Design Center in search of beautiful fabrics, wallpapers, and rugs, I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of the design process.
Working alongside my dedicated design assistants, we pour our passion and creativity into every project. The energy in our studio is vibrant and stimulating as we collaborate and refine our ideas. Our dedication to creating exceptional spaces and bringing dreams to life keeps us motivated and inspired every day.
Are you working on any exciting projects you would like to share with us?
I'm thrilled to announce that we are currently working on our inaugural condominium project in Miami Beach. This particular condominium is undergoing a comprehensive 30year renovation and complete redesign. Our team will be responsible for designing all the shared spaces, including the lobby, hallways, club room, movie theatre room, and outdoor areas. As this design should last for another 30 years, it is crucial to find the perfect harmony between timeless elegance and modern aesthetics. This project presents a remarkable opportunity for us to showcase our expertise and creativity to potential clients in the commercial and hospitality sectors. We are eager to demonstrate our ability to create exceptional spaces that leave a lasting impression.

JOSÉ RAMÓN REYES / THE CUSTOM PROJECT
In the competitive realm of interior design, where every detail counts and every element speaks volumes, Carola Pimentel stands out as a visionary who masters the delicate balance between luxurious aesthetics and functional living. As the founder of Assure Interiors, Pimentel has cultivated a unique design philosophy that transcends mere visual appeal to embrace the realities of her clients' lifestyles.
During an intimate conversation, Pimentel shared insights into her journey and the ethos that drives her approach to design—a blend of client-centric innovation and personal creative expression. With a career spanning significant shifts in design trends and client expectations, she has maintained a focus on creating spaces that are as practical as they are stunning.
A Personal Touch in Professional Spaces
Born into a family with a passion for arts and design, Pimentel's early exposure to creative expression profoundly shaped her aesthetic sensibilities. However, it is her ability to listen and adapt to her clients' needs that truly sets her work apart. "Each project is a new canvas, but it’s not just mine; it’s a canvas I share with my clients," Pimentel explained. This collaborative approach ensures that her designs are deeply personalized, reflecting the individual character and lifestyle of each client.
Her design process begins with understanding the person behind the project. Whether redesigning a family home or conceptualizing a new commercial space, Pimentel delves into her clients' daily lives to draw out elements that resonate on a personal level. This thorough understanding informs every decision, from spatial layouts to material selections, ensuring that each design not only looks spectacular but also lives beautifully.
46 | resident.com DESIGN | RESIDENT
Merging Function with Elegance
Pimentel's signature style is marked by an elegant blend of modern lines and timeless materials, creating spaces that are both forward-thinking and deeply rooted in design tradition. "Functionality doesn’t have to sacrifice beauty," she asserts. This philosophy is evident in projects like the Coconut Grove Villa, where her team transformed a traditional coral stone house into a vibrant, family-friendly environment without losing sight of its aesthetic heritage.
The designer places a strong emphasis on selecting materials that are not only visually appealing but also durable and appropriate for the space's function. For example, in family homes, she prefers materials that withstand the wear and tear of daily life while exuding an air of sophistication. Her thoughtful material choices ensure that her designs are practical, sustainable, and beautifully age with time.

Embracing Artistic Expression
Art plays a central role in Pimentel's designs, serving as both inspiration and integration. She believes that art personalizes a space like nothing else, reflecting the tastes and passions of its occupants. In her projects, artwork is not merely decorative but a pivotal element that informs the design narrative of the space.
For Pimentel, working with local artists is particularly rewarding. It allows her to incorporate unique pieces that carry stories and significance, adding layers of depth and intrigue to her interiors. This commitment to artistic integration helps create spaces that are not only visually cohesive but also culturally rich and personally meaningful.
Looking Ahead
Looking to the future, Pimentel remains excited about the evolving landscape of interior design. With new technologies and materials at her disposal, she is eager to explore innovative ways to enhance her designs while staying true to her philosophy of livable luxury. She is particularly interested in sustainable practices, aiming to integrate more eco-friendly materials and processes into her projects.
As she continues to shape spaces that inspire and function, Carola Pimentel's influence on the design world remains profound. Her ability to weave personal stories into professional spaces not only elevates her projects but also defines her as a designer whose work truly resonates with those who inhabit it.

Discover how Assure Interiors blends luxury with lifestyle in this stunning Miami family home renovation.
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Miami, Florida, the Coconut Grove Villa stands as a testament to luxury and comfort, meticulously designed for a large, bustling family. Spanning an impressive 7,000 square feet, the villa was tasked with the challenge of transforming an existing neoclassical coral stone house into a contemporary haven for its occupants. Assure Interiors took on this project with a clear vision to cater to the family's dynamic lifestyle, ensuring every corner of the villa exudes a stylish and welcom-
ing ambiance, while also prioritizing comfort and functionality.
The client's request and Assure's goal was to create a series of spaces that could accommodate the family’s active social life, the practicalities of raising four children, and the companionship of two large dogs, all without compromising on style or comfort. The result is a home that balances grandeur with warmth, making it ideal for both family life and entertaining guests.

Key to the villa's design is the intelligent use of space. The living areas are divided into distinct zones; for instance, the living room features a dual arrangement with areas designated for relaxation in front of a fireplace and more active engagements near a swivel club chair setup. This thoughtful layout is further enhanced by a blend of contemporary furniture and art pieces, including works by notable Cuban artists Rene Portocarrero and Jose Maria Mijares, which provide cultural depth and a personal touch to the interiors.
The choice of materials and furnishings in the Coconut Grove Villa is a testament to its character and heritage. A serene palette of neutral hues accentuates the interior spaces, complemented by tactile materials like jute and marble, which add layers of texture and sophistication. This is interspersed with bespoke lighting arrangements that not only illuminate but also animate the architectural features of the home, creating enchanting visual narratives in every corner. Each element in the design, from the art and furnishings to the spatial arrangements, carries a personal touch, inviting the audience to connect with the villa's story.
The Coconut Grove Villa's outdoor spaces are a testament to its connection with Miami's eclectic charm. As meticulously designed as its interiors, the main terrace, outfitted with concrete Cuban tiles, serves as a versatile outdoor family room, exemplifying the villa's adaptability to Miami's vibrant lifestyle. Here, family heirlooms and marble tables coexist harmoniously, reflecting the family's heritage and the villa’s lush locale, inspiring the audience with the villa's unique blend of luxury and heritage.
Assure’s renovation of the Coconut Grove Villa underscores Carola Pimentel’s exceptional ability to merge aesthetics with the practical needs of a modern family. Each choice, from the art and furnishings to the spatial arrangements, is a testament to her commitment to creating environments that are not only beautiful but also deeply personal and functional.

HIGHOVER ESTATE
A Legacy of Grandeur in Connecticut’s Enchanted Countryside
Presented by William Raveis Real Estate
Elegantly positioned in the timeless New England setting of Lyme, Connecticut, lies Highover, a treasure of the American landscape. The 30-acre waterfront estate, now listed for $15 million, boasts a legacy of refinement, privacy, and grandeur.
Highover’s commanding presence is rooted in its geology—formed from the ancient rock of Avalonia, it stands as a testament to Earth’s primal past. Yet, it is the symphony of cultural and historical significance that orchestrates its unparalleled allure. Guests such as Albert Einstein, Katharine Hepburn, President Harding, and theatrical luminary William Gillette have graced its halls. Gillette, known for his definitive portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, found solace and inspiration in the tranquility of Highover’s grounds, just as did the impressionist artists who painted the Lyme landscape, making the area known as “American Barbizon,” a New England echo of France’s Giverny.
Architect Alfred Hopkins conceived this sprawling chateau, which, following a meticulous five-year renovation, intertwines the irreplaceable craftsmanship of its 18-inch stone walls with 21st-century luxuries. The heart of the estate is an almost 1,000 square-foot primary suite wing that offers a sanctuary of repose. Whether one is enthralled by the narrative of the home theater, the curated collection
in the 800-bottle wine cellar, the conviviality of the billiards room, or the culinary potential of the kitchen with its sparkling views, every corner of Highover resonates with purpose and possibility.
The estate’s embrace extends to a lovingly restored 1820s Federal Style guest house, offering modern comforts while echoing the architectural reverence of its time. A new three-bay garage with a workshop above and a spacious tobacco barn caters to an array of recreational pursuits. Highover’s dock, cradling Whalebone Creek, awaits a 36’ Hinckley Picnic boat, while larger vessels find harbor at nearby marinas.
It’s not just the land but the sky above Highover that captivates; the lack of light pollution ensures the celestial canvas remains as the stars intended, timeless and boundless. Nature’s performance is unceasing—hummingbirds dance on the southern porch, red-tail hawks weave through the sky, and eagles command the air with their majesty.

The estate’s surroundings are equally enchanting. Lyme, where history whispers through preserved antique homes and undisturbed stone walls, offers a sanctuary from the rapid tempo of urban life. Despite its seclusion, Highover remains within easy reach of New York and Boston, with less than an hour’s helicopter flight from JFK, Logan, and Bradley, blending convenience with serene isolation.
As one traverses the grounds, it’s impossible not to feel the layers of stories that have unfolded here. From the laughter of illustrious guests to the quiet moments of reflection by artists and thinkers, Highover isn’t merely a home; it’s a vibrant cultural artifact. Here, one doesn’t just reside; they become a steward of history, a part of a narrative that continues to unfold with grace and grandeur.

The Gucci Family’s $35 Million New York City Penthouse
A LEGACY OF LUXURY AND ELEGANCE
By Carece Slaughter
The narrative of luxury real estate often intertwines with the stories of its illustrious occupants, and the Gucci family’s New York City penthouse is no exception. With a commanding presence in the heart of Midtown, this penthouse epitomizes the essence of luxurious living, wrapped in the allure of fashion royalty.
Owned by Alessandra and Allegra Gucci, daughters of the former Gucci patriarch Maurizio Gucci, this penthouse is a testament to the family’s elegant lifestyle and their indelible mark on the fashion industry. Purchased by Maurizio when the building was built in the mid-1970s, the home has not only witnessed the evolution of one of the most iconic fashion houses but has also stood as a beacon of abundant living in one of the world’s most vibrant cities.
Occupying the entire 50th and 51st floors of the Olympic Tower at 641 Fifth Avenue, the penthouse spans an impressive 9,450 square feet. The residence boasts eight bedrooms, eight full bathrooms, and two powder rooms, with the living spaces strategically divided across both floors. The lower level houses the bedrooms and laundry facilities, ensuring privacy and convenience. The upper level, dedicated to entertaining, features soaring 14-foot ceilings and two elevator banks, each opening to grand foyers that introduce the residence’s dual-wing layout.
54 | resident.com REAL ESTATE | RESIDENT
Perhaps most striking are the penthouse’s panoramic views. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer uninterrupted vistas of New York City’s most iconic landmarks, including St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, and the Chrysler Building.
The 51st floor is a showcase of grandeur, dominated by a 66-foot-long living room bathed in natural light. This space, designed for both grand entertaining and intimate gatherings, seamlessly connects to a wood-paneled lounge or office, boasting one of the penthouse’s two
wood-burning fireplaces—a rare amenity in a modern condominium and only one in the building. The presence of a large skylight adds an unexpected element of openness, further enhancing the room’s ambiance.
Culinary experiences are elevated in the expansive eat-in kitchen, complete with a large pantry and a staff kitchen/lounge, all overlooking the city’s skyline. For those who appreciate fine wine, the dining room includes a bar and wine storage, complemented by sliding doors that offer versatility in the use of space.
resident.com | 55
The bedrooms are equally luxurious, with two primary suites featuring wood-paneled walls, expansive closets, and spa-like bathrooms equipped with jetted tubs and saunas. These private sanctuaries affirm the penthouse’s commitment to comfort and luxury.
While the residence boasts modern amenities, it retains the original mid-century modern design elements. This connection to the past and the potential to personalize the space make the Gucci penthouse a rare opportunity for anyone seeking to own a piece of Manhattan's luxury real estate legacy. According to Bill Kowalczuk of Serhant, the listing agent, "The open spaces, clean architectural lines and the incredible backdrop of the New York skyline provide an amazing canvas to create a personal masterpiece."
The Olympic Tower’s historical significance is further highlighted by its association with Aristotle Onassis, who jointly developed the building with Arlen Realty and Development Corporation. It is rumored that Jackie Onassis, with her keen eye for sophistication and design, had a hand in choosing Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the architectural firm behind the tower’s construction in 1974. This iconic

building has attracted a constellation of global billionaires, celebrities, and fashion moguls, cementing its reputation as the quintessential Billionaires' Building. Its roster of residents reads like a who's who of international elites, underscoring the tower's unparalleled allure as a symbol of success and sophistication.
In essence, the Gucci family’s New York City penthouse is more than just a luxurious dwelling; it is a narrative of fashion, history, and the enduring appeal of Manhattan luxury real estate.

Luxe Addition a Landmark Skyline
resident.com | 61
In recent years, a certain unnamed usually sunny southern town has been trying to rival the Big Apple with tons of skyscrapers popping up all over, and even a "midtown" and an "Avenue of the America's". But like apples and oranges, there's really no comparison when it comes to this newest addition to the New York skyline: One United Nations Park. No other new luxury residential tower can boast being just blocks away from its landmark namesake the United Nations.
And what a neighbor to have! The United Nations - an iconic place on the banks of New York City's East River - whose purpose is to foster peace and hope throughout our world. A place where global luminaries come to work and spend time, and are frequently seen strolling through the prestigious neighborhood.
I've been fortunate enough to have visited the U.N. a few times and it really is an amazing set of structures steeped in history, with art filled walls, sculpture, a library containing over 400,000 volumes and countless archival documents; outdoor terraces, impeccable grounds, and waterfront views. I can only imagine the beautiful spaces that are reserved for the delegates and dignitaries who grace the halls annually for the U.N. General Assembly.
Little known fact: In keeping with its purpose, The United Nations' aluminum, glass, limestone and marble buildings were collaboratively designed by architects from 11 different countries. In addition, all the interior furnishings were selected from countries representing all corners of the world.
Not only can One United Nations Park residents boast of living so close to this historic venue, but they can also experience a sophisticated, upscale neighborhood with Michelin star restaurants and cultural institutions right outside their door.
Resident readers - let's explore more of what One United Nations Park has to offer, shall we?
The 43-story residential tower designed by the renowned Meier Partners Architects, thrills from the moment you step through the glass frame entrance into the triple height grand lobby appointed with Venetian plaster and travertine slabs.

This urban oasis features open concept layouts and floor to ceiling windows which along with expansive terraces, not only ensure plenty of natural light but spectacular New York skyline and East River views.
One United Nations Park owners can enjoy a comprehensive suite of premium services and amenities such as an entertainment lounge, a screening room, a 70-ft indoor lap pool - which also offers amazing river views - a high end fitness center, private training studio, sauna and steam room; plus daily, personal concierge services by LIVunLtd.
For those who are unaware LIVunLtd is a global luxury lifestyle brand that helps communities achieve wellness by providing programs, staffing, concierge services, high end gyms, and other upscale amenities to homes, offices, schools and even water parks.
Residents at One United Nations Park have access to best-in-class luxury whether at home, in their car or in the air, as there's a completely private underground parking garage through a porte-cochère via the building's lobby. Plus, a special partnership with Blade, gives residents preferred pricing to book helicopters, seaplanes, and jets directly through the building concierge. Haute!

For many reasons, One United Nations Park is a coveted property and all one-bedrooms have already sold out, but there are some two, three and four bedrooms still available in addition to one amazing penthouse waiting for its special person - that person can live anywhere but for whom it's New York or nowhere.
"Now with the building being over 80% sold, limited opportunity remains for buyers to live at One United Nations Park," stated Tricia Hayes Cole, Executive Managing Director at Corcoran Sunshine Marketing Group."Penthouse D at One United Nations Park is one of our most special residences. The home offers prospective buyers the rare opportunity to live in a townhouse in the sky."

In addition to all the aforementioned amenities and breathtaking views, this ultraluxe 3,831 square foot 4 bedroom 4-and-a-half bath duplex penthouse listed at $8,995,000, also features an open staircase with solid wood treads, an open island kitchen containing Calacatta Lincoln marble countertops and Italian lacquered cabinets, a nearly 20 foot tall great room with floor to ceiling windows and an adjacent den; a home office, a luxurious primary suite with a walk-in closet and ensuite bathroom; and a private internal elevator. All only a brief 4-minute walk from the U.N.
One United Nations Park was developed by the Soloviev Group which has a broad range of real estate and hospitality interests and is led by Stefan Soloviev. While researching this piece, I discovered that in addition to being a real estate scion, Mr. Soloviev is also a dedicated philanthropist, passionate about promoting ethics,
social responsibility and sustainability - among other causes, which was really refreshing to learn.
In the spirit of the peace and goodwill the United Nations strives to achieve, we can certainly acknowledge the benefits of living in that warmer, quickly growing city, and praise its rapid rise. Plus, for an easy winter getaway, it can't be beaten. So, of course, we wish it and our friends who live there all the best.
But there's only one New York - only one city that gets to host the one and only United Nations. And only one new luxury tower that gets this uber prestigious name: One United Nations Park

ALLISON FREIDIN
Pioneering Graffiti Art's Renaissance in Miami
With Carece Slaughter
From Legal Luminary to Art World Visionary: Unveiling the Journey of Allison Freidin and the Rise of Urban Art
Allison Freidin, a visionary force in the Miami art scene, has seamlessly blended her legal acumen with a fervent passion for urban art to co-found the Museum of Graffiti and The Art of Hip Hop. Her journey from combating gun violence as an attorney to revolutionizing the graffiti art landscape embodies a profound narrative of transformation and advocacy. I invite you, our readers, to delve into the captivating world of Allison Freidin, where law, art, and activism intertwine to create a vibrant tapestry of cultural innovation. Freidin's trailblazing endeavors have not only curated a sanctuary for graffiti and hip-hop culture but also initiated dialogues on art's integral role in societal change. Through her dynamic leadership and innovative partnerships, she has elevated the art form to unprecedented heights, challenging perceptions and fostering a new era of artistic appreciation. Join us as we explore the journey of a woman whose life and work are as colorful and impactful as the art she champions.
Allison, transitioning from a practicing attorney committed to combating gun violence to co-founding the Museum of Graffiti and the Art of Hip Hop exhibit is a significant career shift. What moment or experience served as your turning point, inspiring you to pursue your passion for art, particularly graffiti and hip-hop culture?
After building up and working some pretty high profile gun violence cases, I felt as though I had reached a bit of a plateau in my career. Art has always been at the top of my personal interests, and I think my creative inclinations perhaps run deeper than the average attorney. Always looking to make the maximum use of my skills, it seemed almost necessary to make the transition from the courtroom to Miami’s Arts District. What’s similar about both roles was my desire to help the underdog, whether it was a victim or a struggling artist, and feed my desire to uplift urban environments.
The path of entrepreneurship, especially in the arts, is often riddled with unique challenges and barriers. Could you share some of the obstacles you faced in establishing the world's first museum dedicated exclusively to graffiti art and how you overcame them? Additionally, what specific challenges did you navigate in representing street artists and legitimizing graffiti as a respected art form?
When we set out to start the Museum of Graffiti, I met with many individuals with deep roots in the highbrow art world. Many of them refused to accept graffiti as art and wrote it off as more of a virus in developing communities. It wasn’t until we opened our doors and
resident.com | 75
received the praise of the New York Times, CBS Saturday Morning, and other major media outlets that tones started to change. This change in sentiment further proved that having a museum dedicated to educating the masses on the subject matter was critical. As you walk through the exhibitions you notice that graffiti artists aren’t gang members and criminals, but instead were painted in that light by authorities pushing out anti-graffiti propaganda because they themselves did not understand the reason for the writing on the walls. Today, we continue to battle the long-standing stigma associated with aerosol as a medium. Still, through our private art gallery, pieces by the best aerosol artists in the world are now making their way into top collections of individuals and Fortune 500 companies.
As a third-generation Miami native, how do you believe your deep-rooted connection to the city has influenced your entrepreneurial ventures, especially in creating spaces that celebrate urban art and hip-hop culture?
Every city has its own history, and I have taken it upon myself to make sure Miami’s position
in graffiti art and hip hop is well represented in our exhibitions. Specifically, my newest venture, the Art of Hip Hop, focuses specifically on artists, photographers, and designers who shaped the visual identity of Hip Hop. Within the exhibit, we have reserved special spaces to highlight the globally renown talent that came out of Miami and leveraged our urban tropical oasis as their inspiration. An excellent example of this is an entire wall dedicated to Miamiborn photographer David Cabrera, who shot some of the biggest names in Hip Hop and set them up in a way that tells a deeper story without hearing lyrics or a beat. His sprawling images of hometown heroes Rick Ross and Kodak Black are true showstoppers.
The "10 for 10" program you initiated a few years ago is a creative approach to philanthropy within the art world. Can you talk more about the impact this initiative has had on your selected charities and how it reflects your broader vision for the intersection of art and social responsibility?
While preserving art history and art education is my main arena, there are so many important
issues in society that require an “all hands on deck” approach for a better tomorrow. I do not believe that community service is a spectator sport, and as such, we always make use of our physical spaces to benefit various causes that need our help. One specific initiative we are proud of is the “10 for 10” program that periodically invites fine art collectors to receive a 10% discount on original art, with the next 10% of the price of the piece donated by us to the charity. This is a successful way to support our local artist community by selling paintings to benefit a good cause.
In your journey, you have not only transitioned careers but also embraced digital opportunities, such as your venture with the @miami Instagram account. What advice would you give to other women looking to pivot in their careers or explore new entrepreneurial landscapes, especially in sectors where they may not have traditional expertise?
I think everyone should “diversify their portfolio.” What I mean by this is to avoid getting complacent with a daily routine and instead
76 | resident.com
The Museum of Graffiti | The Art of Hip Hop
dive deeper into subjects, new or old, that make you happy. For the same reasons you should “diversify” in the traditional financial sense, I think learning new subject matters keeps me sharp by having my finger on the pulse of what’s going on in other realms and helps me network and stay inspired. All my businesses end up cross pollinating each other in some way.
The Art of Hip Hop exhibit has been instrumental in providing a platform for the unsung heroes of Hip Hop - the photographers, album cover artists, graffiti legends, and logo designers who have significantly contributed to the genre's visual identity. What inspired you to focus specifically on these aspects of Hip Hop culture, and how do you see the exhibit evolving to honor further and explore the depth of Hip Hop's impact on art and society?
I think I found a niche in my career, shining a light on creatives who traditionally go unnoticed. My first experience in this was creating great awareness for the world’s best graffiti writers, and because it was so well received,
we needed to keep going. Graffiti writers have traditionally been hired by Hip Hop stars and execs to create logos, design merch, or paint backdrops for photoshoots and music videos. When we recognized how graffiti writers never really get credit for their role in shaping Hip Hop culture when compared with the DJs and MCs, we set out to change that. In that same vein, the photographers and illustrators are in the same boat, so this new concept - Art of Hip Hop - is really dedicated to them. While we exhibit their work and educate the public, we also provide a rare opportunity for collectors, fans, and enthusiasts to come meet this talent and acquire their work. There is no other place in the world to shop the world’s most talented visual creators in Hip Hop all in one place.
You have mentioned the importance of education on street art and creating a platform for graffiti artists to enter the metaverse. Looking to the future, what innovations or trends do you see shaping the art world, particularly in digital spaces? How do you plan to keep the Museum of Graffiti and Art of Hip Hop exhibit at the forefront of these changes?
I think the big digital change we are all going to see in the art x tech space is AI. If used properly, AI can be used responsibly to enhance the curation process in galleries, museums, and online platforms. Recommendation algorithms use data on user preferences to suggest artworks, helping individuals discover pieces that align with their tastes and interests.
Allison Freidin's narrative is not just a testament to her personal journey but a beacon for aspiring artists and entrepreneurs. Her ability to navigate the complexities of the art world, coupled with a commitment to social responsibility, illustrates the profound impact of visionary leadership in transforming cultural landscapes. As we wrap up this inspiring dialogue, it is my pleasure to share her remarkable story and extend a heartfelt thank you to Allison for her candor and insights. As Freidin continues to pave new paths in the digital realm and beyond, her work remains a pivotal force in redefining the boundaries of street art and its place in contemporary society. Through her endeavors, Allison Freidin has not only etched her legacy in Miami’s history but also inspired a future where art and activism converge, creating a tapestry of change and innovation.

The Evolution and Impact of Ignacio Gana
With Carece Slaughter
From Chilean Roots to Global Acclaim: A Deep Dive into Ignacio Gana's Artistic Odyssey
In an intimate exploration of creativity and cultural identity, internationally acclaimed artist Ignacio Gana shares his journey from the vibrant landscapes of Chile to the forefront of the global art scene. Renowned for his compelling sculptures and evocative paintings, Gana delves into the pivotal moments and personal inspirations that shape his work. This interview unveils how his Latin American heritage, passion for fine arts, and life experiences intertwine to forge artworks that captivate and challenge viewers worldwide.
Carece: Ignacio, your journey from Chile to becoming an internationally acclaimed artist is remarkable. Can you share a pivotal moment in your early life that solidified your path as an artist, and how has your Latin American heritage influenced your artistic voice?
Ignacio: Reflecting on my childhood, I realized creativity always drew me in. I started sketching and painting in my books as a child, even during classes. Unlike my classmates, this approach was how I connected with the world, seeing beauty from unique perspectives. I was captivated by the subtle details—colors, shapes, and the overlooked elements.
Art was essential for expressing my thoughts on canvas. Although I initially pursued ar-
chitecture for its structural elements, my true passion was always the fine arts. I enriched my understanding by visiting museums and galleries across New York and Europe, immersing myself in different artistic expressions and materials.
My art evolved significantly over time, deeply influenced by life's milestones, such as the birth of my children, which vividly altered my color palette. Such changes inspired me to explore new directions; I transitioned from painting to sculpting. Despite having no formal training in sculpture, I embraced the challenge, driven by a desire for my art to represent genuine emotions rather than merely pleasing viewers. This authenticity has been pivotal, allowing people to feel a real connection to my work.
Carece: Your work is known for its figurative style and elegant sensuality. Could you walk us through your creative process, from conceptualization to completion, and explain how you decide which materials best convey the narrative of each artwork?
Ignacio: Sculpting is a complex and lengthy process, distinctly different from painting. It requires a clear long-term vision, as creating a sculpture typically takes about eight months. I must be certain of every detail before starting, given this extended duration. Once complete,
a sculpture begins its own journey.
Life itself inspires my creative process—everyday experiences, colors, shapes, and stories. I often observe people in cafés, sketching my observations. These not only capture the visual but also the emotional essence of moments— joy, relaxation, beauty.
My strong photographic memory helps immensely, retaining the fine details and emotions of these scenes. Through my sculptures, I aim to convey these feelings, allowing others to appreciate life's subtler aspects. This approach hopes to offer a new perspective, making the ordinary extraordinary.
Carece: You have said that each of your sculptures and paintings tells a compelling story with a strong emphasis on the human form. What draws you to explore leisure and relaxation through your subjects, and how do you infuse each piece with its unique narrative?
Ignacio: I'm drawn to beauty in all its complexities, acknowledging that beauty often coexists with imperfection. I use elegant imagery to convey meaningful messages, aiming to evoke deep emotions similar to the elegance in this conversation.

Initially, my focus on the human form in paintings allowed me to construct compelling narratives. Whether it’s a scene depicting relaxation, sport, or balance, these figures create a visual narrative that invites viewers to perceive life differently.
In sculpture, the human form extends to represent broader concepts. For instance, a diver poised above the water symbolizes not just a physical leap, but a metaphorical dive into pursuing one's dreams. It's about capturing more than a moment; it's about expressing aspirations and the profound aspects of human experience. I strive to infuse each piece with its unique narrative, connecting viewers to deeper, often unspoken stories.
Carece: You've mentioned that being a father, along with music and sports, inspires your work. How do these personal aspects of your life reflect in your art, and could you share a specific piece that holds a deep personal connection for you?
Ignacio: My art deeply reflects personal experiences, particularly as a father and my passions for music and sports. One sculpture, 'The Impossible Journey,' holds special meaning. It depicts a small boat, resembling a paper boat, on a water-like base, symbolizing the transformative potential of simple dreams, much like a paper sheet becomes a vessel for adventure.
This sculpture draws from my dream of making a mark in America, embodying the aspiration of a man with a boat, looking towards the horizon, mirroring my ambitions
My sculptures of women often explore themes of relaxation and joy, depicting serene balance and enjoyment. They embody a calmness I admire, representing the peace we all seek in today's fast-paced life. These pieces encourage viewers to pause and savor life's quieter moments, reflecting the dual nature of human aspirations: chasing dreams and finding tranquility.
Carece: The upcoming "The Game" collection intriguingly merges contemporary art with popular sports. What inspired you to explore this fusion, and how do you think it reflects or challenges the cultural significance of sports in today's society?
resident.com | 79
Ignacio: The "The Game" collection originated serendipitously, inspired by a basketball player who purchased my sculpture. This sparked the idea of creating a series that celebrates sports. As an architect turned sculptor, I conceptualize each piece, starting with a core idea and finding the best way to express it visually. The first basketball sculpture captured both the power and beauty of the sport, receiving positive feedback from galleries.
This success led to a broader collection, now comprising 85 sculptures that delve into the cultural aspects of sports in America, addressing themes like poverty, success, and diversity—including racial and sexual diversity.
Some pieces highlight sports as a force for transformation, elevating individuals from poverty. Others discuss discrimination in sports, reflecting on how athletes are perceived based on race or sexual orientation. Despite the weight of these themes, each sculpture is crafted with beauty and elegance.
This collection not only showcases artistic finesse but also offers cultural commentary, integrating the struggles and triumphs of sports with contemporary art. Each piece aims to be a thought-provoking, elegant addition to any setting, exploring the nexus of athletic and artistic achievement.
Carece: With "The Game" featuring materials like gold, bronze, Swarovski crystals, and Italian marble, what role do these materials play in the storytelling of your art, and is there a symbolic significance behind these choices?
Ignacio: Each material in my sculptures has a distinct voice that contributes to the story. While bronze forms about 80% of my work, certain narratives require different mediums like Italian marble or Swarovski crystals to enhance their impact.
In various installations, I blend materials like bronze, aluminum, and acrylic to enrich the artwork's expression, each adding unique texture and sheen. The choice of materials is deliberate, aimed at emphasizing the thematic essence of each sculpture. For instance, bronze communicates strength and timelessness, mar-

ble exudes purity and elegance, and crystals reflect brilliance.
This careful selection ensures that every sculpture is not only visually striking but also deeply resonant with viewers, perfectly embodying the narrative and emotional depth intended.
Carece: Having exhibited worldwide and now focusing on the U.S. market, particularly Miami, how do you see your work contributing to or transforming Miami's cultural landscape, especially with your monumental sculptures "Chocolate Girl" and "Flamingo Girl"?
Ignacio: Exhibiting my work in Miami, a cultural epicenter, is a dream come true. Each sculpture begins as a small model, a maquette, envisioned to scale seamlessly into public spaces. My sculptures like "Chocolate Girl" and "Flamingo Girl" are gifts to the city, engaging with the community on a grand scale and enhancing public areas, not merely as decorations but as enrichments that encourage reflection and a fresh perspective.
These pieces serve as open narratives, allowing individual interpretation influenced by personal experiences. This interactive aspect is what I find most rewarding—my art might inspire someone to pause and dream, even briefly.
I use durable materials like bronze to ensure longevity, making these sculptures more than mere art; they are legacies meant to provide joy and inspiration for future generations.
Placing art in public spaces deeply connects with and contributes to the community, crafting experiences that resonate with everyone and become integral to the city's identity and daily life.
Carece: Transitioning from Chile to the global art scene and now making significant inroads in the U.S., what have been some of the most challenging aspects of your career, and conversely, the most rewarding moments?
Ignacio: Transitioning from Chile to the global stage and establishing myself in the U.S. has presented both challenges and rewards. One significant challenge was the initial resistance from the art community, which often favors more traditional, established artists. This meant I had to work harder to be recognized, requiring persistence to build a reputation and develop a body of work that spoke my artistic language.
Despite these hurdles, I firmly believe that artists should be appreciated during their lifetime. It’s been essential for me to share my art now and witness people engaging with it while I am still active.
The most rewarding aspect has been developing a unique artistic style that is instantly recognizable, whether in Europe, Chile, or the U.S. Achieving recognition where my work is immediately associated with my name has been extremely fulfilling. It confirms that creating from the heart and being transparent in my expression allows me to effectively communicate through my art.
Additionally, placing sculptures in public spaces has been immensely rewarding. This exposure lets a broader audience experience my work, helping to establish my style globally. Each public installation furthers my artistic voice across different cultures.
These experiences have reinforced that maintaining vision and creativity in the face of challenges is as vital as artistic talent itself. Each

challenge has driven my progress, and each recognition affirms my dedication to my art.
Carece: Being selected as the "Artist of the Year" by the Latin Grammy Awards in 2017 is a significant accolade. How has this recognition influenced your career, and do you see any intersection between your art and the music celebrated by the Latin Grammys?
Igacio: Being named 'Artist of the Year' by the Latin Grammy Awards in 2017 was a transformative event in my career. This accolade is highly prestigious in the Americas, comparable to the Grammys or Oscars. It arrived unexpectedly when I was merely seeking a new exhibition opportunity, making it both surprising and profoundly gratifying.
This recognition significantly elevated my profile in the U.S. art community, where such awards are revered, enhancing my credibility. The reality in the art world is that such accolades garner respect and attention. Although I believe art should stand on its own, the impact on my career has been profound, increasing my recognition, respect, and opportunities. Prestigious galleries started approaching me, my works entered esteemed collections, and my sales surged.
Moreover, there's a notable synergy between my art and the music celebrated by the Latin Grammys. Both share a rhythmic, dynamic quality with deep cultural resonance, enriching my work and aligning with these musical themes. This intersection has not only enhanced the award's impact but also expanded my audience and artistic collaborations.
Overall, receiving this award marked a pivotal shift, opening doors to future opportunities and fundamentally changing my perception in the art world and beyond.
Carece: With an illustrious career and "The Game," your latest collection’s, recent unveiling, what future projects are you most excited about, and how do you envision your art evolving in the coming years? Are there new themes or mediums you're eager to explore?

ART & CULTURE
Ignacio: I'm incredibly excited about future projects, particularly in Miami, where I aim to transform the city into a renowned hub for public art. You can expect to see several of my large sculptures enhancing Miami's cityscape soon, as I strive to enrich the city with art beyond the seasonal events like Art Basel.
I'm currently developing a new collection titled 'Seduction,' exploring themes of sensuality and beauty. This collection, set to premiere in Chile before coming to Miami, features around 100 sculptures that capture the essence of allure and femininity in provocative and vivid forms.
Additionally, I'm working on monumental sculptures that will leave a significant mark on their locations. For instance, in California, I'm creating a five-meter tall sculpture for Redondo Beach, and in Miami’s Brickell area, a similar large bronze piece is planned for installation next year.
These initiatives not only represent an expansion in scale but also an evolution in thematic focus and material usage. I'm exploring new materials to better express these themes, each piece pushing the boundaries of my artistic expression and contributing meaningfully to the communities that host my work.
I'm eager to showcase my art on a grand scale, bringing new narratives and aesthetic pleasures to public spaces, and inspiring viewers with the power and beauty of sculpture.
Ignacio Gana's visionary approach redefines contemporary art's boundaries, promising exciting future projects and further contributions to public spaces, especially in Miami. As he explores new themes and mediums, Gana remains committed to creating art that not only enhances landscapes but also enriches lives. His dedication to conveying profound narratives through sculpture and painting ensures that his influence will resonate for generations, bridging cultures and celebrating the universal beauty of the human experience.

EMPOWERING THREADS Ema Koja's Journey from Athlete to Iconic Fashion Designer
With Carece Slaughter
Discover how Ema Koja transforms her athletic discipline and creative vision into empowering fashion statements.
In an exclusive interview with Ema Koja, the visionary behind Ema Savahl Couture, we delve into her inspiring transition from a dedicated athlete to a celebrated fashion designer. Ema shares how her athletic discipline has shaped her approach to fashion and business, revealing the deep connections between her past experiences and her current creative successes. Her unique journey illuminates the profound impact of her designs on women's self-perception and empowerment worldwide.
Ema, transitioning from a celebrated athlete to a visionary in the fashion industry is no small feat. Can you share how the disciplines and challenges of your athletic career influenced your approach to fashion design and business
Growing up in a family deeply rooted in athletics, with my father coaching elite teams for over two decades, provided me with a unique perspective from a young age. Being an athlete taught me about the microcosm of life: the daily training, discipline, and the necessity of being attuned to both mind and body. These elements helped me to constantly evaluate and adapt my strategies—skills that are just as applicable in the fashion industry. The practice of visualization, which was integral to my sports training, has become a powerful tool in real-
izing my goals within fashion. This foundation has profoundly shaped my approach to business and design. Most certainly, disciplines from my past have paved the way for my creative pursuits.
Your designs are renowned for transforming fashion into a canvas of art. How have your formative years in Albania and experiences in Italy shaped this artistic vision and driven your success in fashion?
Growing up in communist Albania, my early environment, though restrictive, profoundly influenced my creative vision. My mother, raised by artists, instilled in me a profound appreciation for beauty and creativity amidst societal challenges. She taught me embroidery, crochet, and drawing, while my family's rich artistic heritage nurtured my skills and appreciation for exquisite detail. These formative experiences fostered a resourcefulness in me, often leading me to create with whatever materials were available, like crafting leather-like textures from melted plastic bags. The discipline I developed from sports, combined with the artistic skills from my family, prepared me for life's transitions from Albania to Italy and eventually America. In Italy, opportunities in volleyball and the local fashion scene allowed me to engage in modeling and design, further shaping
my creative path. The enduring influence of my family's spirit, humor, and resilience continues to drive my fashion career, turning past adversities into a wellspring of innovation and success. Each piece I create celebrates this journey, blending the lost beauty of the past with a vibrant, enduring vision for the future.
Your brand, Ema Savahl Couture, is celebrated for making every woman feel like a unique work of art. How do you hope your designs impact the way women see themselves and their place in the world?
In embracing the magic of my journey, I've channeled immense energy into my designs, creating garments that embody freedom and adaptability. Supported by a nurturing environment, my creativity has flourished, allowing me to deeply connect with the emotional and physical needs of my clients. My designs aim to be timeless, versatile, and expressive of each wearer's unique spirit. They are more than just clothing; they serve as vehicles for personal expression and empowerment. Figures like Doreen Virtue have noted healing qualities in my work, affirming its transformative power. Through fashion, I mentor and guide women toward personal enlightenment, helping them manifest self-discovery and empowerment.

Your website bio mentions creating 'ex nihilo'—out of nothing. Can you walk us through your creative process from conception to the final piece? How do you navigate the tension between vision and execution, especially with such intricate designs?
Movin to Miami transformed my personal and professional life, integrating my passions for sports, art, spirituality, and fashion into a unique creative approach. Drawing on my background in volleyball and sports medicine, I design with an understanding of body dynamics and emotional states, ensuring each piece resonates with the wearer. My creative process involves revamping vintage garments and incorporating iconic styles, like those of Christian Dior and Emilio Pucci, into contemporary designs. This blend of technical precision and artistic flair allows me to transform visionary concepts into tangible realities, crafting garments that empower women to express their unique identities and strengths confidently.
As a woman leading a successful brand in a competitive industry, what unique challenges have you faced, and how have you navigated the complexities of being an artist, entrepreneur, and mentor? What advice would you offer to women striving to make their mark in their respective fields?
Leading as a single mother and an entrepreneur during tough economic times, I drew immense strength from spiritual practices, including ayahuasca, which clarified and empowered my vision. I channeled this newfound energy into creating my "warrior princess" collections, which not only mirrored my personal transformation but also resonated deeply with others facing similar struggles. Facing challenges like design theft and staff poaching, I fostered a healing, temple-like work environment, supporting our community through these trials. Recognizing the limitations of the U.S. market, I relocated our operations to Europe, where our work, enhanced by collaborations like those with Swarovski Crystals, was better appreciated. This allowed us to upscale into the luxury segment. Each design I create now reflects a chapter of my spiritual journey, paving the way for "Goddesses with Trust," a future mentoring platform.
To women forging their paths, I say: Embrace and own your power. Recognize your divine role and the impact you can make. Whether it’s through nurturing roles or professional ambitions, understand your unique contribution to humanity. Embrace your femininity, support your partners, and cherish the transformative power of unity among women. Trust in your path, value your authenticity, and remember, the collective strength of women supporting each other is unparalleled. This holistic approach has not only shaped my career but also empowered others in their journeys, blending the roles of artist, entrepreneur, and mentor seamlessly.
Your designs have been worn by some of the most iconic women in the entertainment industry. How has this visibility impacted your brand, and what do you think draws these powerful women to your creations?
Celebrity endorsements have tremendously boosted the visibility of my brand. Figures like Paris Hilton, who wore my designs on "The Simple Life," brought significant attention to my work, despite my having minimal formal fashion training and not actively seeking celebrity endorsements. Celebrities like Linda Evangelista, Helena Christensen, and Jennifer Lopez wearing my pieces have notably elevated my brand's profile. They often acquire my designs from stores and wear them in public, which even without direct brand mentions, markedly increases our visibility.
I believe these powerful women are drawn to my creations because they resonate with their personal journeys and transformations. For example, I felt a deep connection to Paris Hilton during her more challenging times and hoped my designs could uplift her spirits.
What sets our brand apart is the unique energy each piece carries, created in an environment filled with art, beautiful music, and positive vibes. We have built relationships with around 800 influencers and crafted some 70,000 designs, reflecting our dedication to creativity and inspiration. The bespoke nature of our garments rarely mass-produced, positions our brand not merely as a fashion label but as a movement that empowers women to express

their strength and elegance, embodying the essence of modern-day princesses and queens.
Looking forward, what new dreams or goals are you aiming to achieve with Ema Savahl Couture? Are there any new directions or projects you are particularly excited about?
At this significant stage of my life, my 22-yearold son has successfully taken our business online, allowing me to focus more fully on creative pursuits. His transition into this role has been seamless, embodying the drive and responsibility he developed as a national champion in beach volleyball. This energy is now channeled into our business, particularly appealing to a younger demographic and introducing a more accessible line of our couture pieces online. He has initiated a parallel venture alongside
my couture business, focusing on massproducing and selling selected pieces online. This approach allows those who previously couldn't afford our dresses and art-infused pieces access at a significantly reduced price. His business model—producing limited runs of 500 unique pieces and then discontinuing them—has made our brand more accessible to the youth. With my son at the helm and his extensive community support, I believe we're poised to strengthen our brand significantly, expanding beyond dresses and bathing suits to loungewear, lingerie, and now, a shoe line. Having modeled lingerie and swimwear in Italy, I've always catered to my private clients. However, I'm now eager to officially launch shoes at the Miami Swim Week—beautiful, comfortable footwear

designed to meet women's needs, including sneakers and painted sneakers suitable for both day and night.
Additionally, I've introduced a bridal collection to our line, embodying the essence of Miss Aval—exceptional comfort, ease of wear, and durability. We invite our brides to return their dresses for redesigns, allowing them to cherish and rewear these pieces as symbols of their union's authenticity. My understanding and refinement of art, comfort, and service drive me to offer the world the best of what I can provide. Under my son's guidance, an incredibly focused athlete, we aim to be a beacon of love, benevolence, and goodwill for humanity. As our world undergoes a profound transformation, I see parallels between the challenges I've faced and those the world is experiencing. It reinforces my belief in the power of awakening, love, and unity to bring about a more compassionate and unified global community.

SUNSHINE FOSS
Redefining Retail with Happy Cork's Inclusive Vision
In the bustling streets of Brooklyn, Sunshine Foss has turned a vacant retail space into Happy Cork, a haven celebrating diversity and community through wine and spirits. As a former real estate professional, Foss leveraged her background in design to create an establishment that is far from just a liquor store; it is a communal experience, rich with representation and cultural resonance.
Happy Cork stands out not just for its vast selection of Black- and minority-owned brands but also for the atmosphere it cultivates—one of inclusivity, education, and personal connection. Foss discusses her motivations, stating, "We acquired the building in 2016... I knew I wanted to create something different... something customers would love to venture into." This vision came to life as Happy Cork, which emphasizes consumer interaction and community engagement over mere transactions.
Navigating a male-dominated industry, Foss found strength and opportunity in intentional inclusivity. "From the gate coming into this industry... I think it’s up to retail but also the customer to be more intentional in their spending," she explains. Her strategy involves actively seeking out and supporting women winemakers and distillers, a commitment that not only shapes her inventory but also defines the ethos of Happy Cork.
Foss's leadership style is deeply influenced by her own journey and the challenges she has overcome. Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs reflects her tenacity: "Dive in headfirst and go for it! But remember success doesn't come easy... Flexibility is key!" This approach has helped her navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship and the specifics of a highly regulated industry like liquor sales.
The community-centric model of Happy Cork has been instrumental in its growth and impact. Foss describes the space as being built for the community, not merely a place where they are welcome. This philosophy extends to how she views her role as a business owner in a diverse neighborhood. Her commitment is evident in her proactive approach to hosting events and tastings that engage directly with customers and elevate minority-owned brands.
94 | resident.com PROFILE | RESIDENT
Looking to the future, Foss is enthusiastic about expanding Happy Cork's influence and offerings. "We are not your typical liquor store... We are working on having more in-store experiences with customers... It’s about being able to be as innovative and different as possible," she says. This ongoing innovation includes a new tasting room space that will allow Happy Cork to host more events and further embed itself as a cornerstone of the community.
Sunshine Foss has indeed created a remarkable business that transcends the traditional retail model. Happy Cork is a testament to her vision of a store that not only sells wine and spirits but also cultivates a rich, inclusive community experience. As she aptly puts it, the space was built for the community, embodying a deeper sense of belonging and connection that continues to grow alongside the store itself.
Sunshine's journey and Happy Cork's success are powerful reminders of the impact intentional business practices can have on a community, offering a model for other entrepreneurs to follow in creating spaces that reflect and celebrate the diversity of their clientele.

NIKKI SIMKINS
Elevating Spirits with E11even Vodka
In the vibrant nightlife scene of Miami, Nikki Simkins has carved out a niche with E11even Vodka, a brand that embodies the city's dynamic spirit and caters to a modern, healthconscious consumer. As the founder and CEO of one of the few female-led vodka brands, Simkins has not only entered a male-dominated industry but has also infused it with her passion for clean living and empowerment.
E11even Vodka emerged from Simkins' desire to create a vodka that resonated with strong, independent women like herself. "None of [the existing brands] represented strong independent women in modern American culture," Simkins explains. This gap in the market led
her to develop a vodka that mirrored Miami's fresh, vibrant characteristics and its history as the only major U.S. city founded by a woman. E11even Vodka, launched in 2019, is not just a product but a celebration of Miami's cultural relevance and its trailblazing spirit.
Simkins' journey into the spirits industry was driven by her commitment to gender parity and empowering other women. "As a female CEO of a spirits brand, I have a responsibility to set an example to others that it can be done," she states. This ethos is reflected in her team's diversity, including key leadership roles held by women, which champions inclusivity within the industry.

Facing challenges as a newcomer without prior industry experience, Simkins had to navigate the complex regulatory landscape and overcome skepticism from local retailers. Her perseverance paid off, and E11even Vodka's differentiated brand proposition and award-winning quality eventually won recognition and shelf space. "Having a strong and differentiated brand proposition and an award-winning product made a difference, and our persistence paid off," she recounts.
Beyond the vodka itself, E11even Vodka actively supports causes that empower women, such as the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation and The Lotus House, underscoring Simkins' commitment to social responsibility. "All of our philanthropic efforts benefit charities that support women," Simkins notes, highlighting how the brand extends its impact beyond the spirits industry.
Looking forward, Simkins is ambitious about expanding E11even Vodka's presence both domestically and internationally. With plans to enter new markets and introduce additional product sizes, the future of E11even Vodka is as spirited as its founder. NICOLE YOUNG Crafting a New Narrative with Frisky Whiskey
Nicole Young, an enterprising spirit and the visionary behind Frisky Whiskey, has significantly disrupted the whiskey industry by introducing a flavored spirit that captures a wider audience with its natural caramel and vanilla nuances. As the first and only Black woman to own a flavored whiskey brand, Young's journey is marked by ingenuity and a strong commitment to diversity and quality.
Young’s transition from a diverse career spanning fit modeling, clothing design, and media relations to the spirits industry has equipped her with unique insights and skills that have profoundly shaped her approach to business. "Being a Black woman in the industry has been positively impactful... I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the open arms I’ve been welcomed with," she shares. Despite facing "glass-like doors" that seemed open but were actually barriers, her resilience has turned challenges into opportunities.
The inception of Frisky Whiskey was motivated by Young's desire to expand the traditional whiskey audience and challenge preconceived notions about the spirit. "We created a flavored whiskey brand with the intent of transforming people’s preconceived notions about whiskey," Young explains. This innovation reflects her philosophy of balancing healthy living with worthwhile indulgences, making Frisky Whiskey a beacon for both seasoned aficionados and newcomers to the whiskey world.
Young’s advice to other women entrepreneurs is grounded in realism and empowerment.
She emphasizes the importance of clear vision and secure financing, suggesting that perseverance and flexibility are key to navigating maledominated fields. "Just because something doesn’t happen in the timeframe you thought or in the exact context you imagined doesn’t mean you’ve failed," she advises, highlighting the importance of adaptability in entrepreneurship.
Frisky Whiskey has not only been recognized for its distinctive flavor profile but has also inspired culinary creations and pairings, further showcasing Young's influence across industries. Renowned chefs and culinary experts have embraced Frisky Whiskey, incorporating its rich flavors into dishes and desserts that resonate with Young's commitment to quality and innovation.
Looking ahead, Young has ambitious plans for Frisky Whiskey’s expansion both domestically and internationally. GG MIRVIS Redefining Mezcal with Desolas
In the evolving landscape of agave spirits, GG Mirvis stands out as a pioneering force with her brand, Desolas Mezcal. Transitioning from a tequila-infused coconut water venture in her college dorm to launching a distinctive mezcal brand, Mirvis's journey is a testament to her innovative spirit and deep respect for traditional mezcal-making.
Mirvis's entry into the spirits industry was fueled by a desire to challenge and enhance existing perceptions of mezcal. “I was intrigued... I started exploring Mezcal and understanding it more – uncovering the different types of agaves and the different variations of flavor,” she explains. This exploration led to the creation of Desolas Mezcal, which showcases a fresher, subtly smoky profile that distinguishes it from the typically smoky flavor associated with traditional mezcals.
Desolas Mezcal is noted for its unique approach to emphasizing the agave-forward taste, steering away from the typical smoky profile that many associate with mezcal. This direction reflects Mirvis's vision of making mezcal accessible and enjoyable beyond its conventional image. "Mezcal could be so many different things... It was serendipitous that the family I used to work with connected me to the producers of the salmiana agave," Mirvis recounts, highlighting the moment of inspiration that led to Desolas's creation.
The challenges of starting an alcohol brand as a young entrepreneur, particularly as a woman in a male-dominated industry, were significant. Yet, Mirvis's perseverance and the mentorship she received from established figures in the industry were crucial in overcoming these obstacles. "The trust and the respect that I have for her fueled my desire to continue working with her family and to create Desolas," she states, underscoring the importance of strong professional relationships in her success.
Mirvis's advice to aspiring female entrepreneurs is empowering and direct: "If you feel very passionate about it and your gut says to do it, just do it. With perseverance, confidence, and proper planning, anything is possible." This ethos has driven her to not only succeed but also innovate within the spirits industry.

As Desolas Mezcal gains recognition and accolades, Mirvis reflects on the brand's impact and the validation it brings. "It’s been extremely validating to see that all of our wins have been naturally awarded," she remarks, proud of the team's effort and the product's quality. The awards underscore Desolas's commitment to quality, tradition, and innovation in the mezcal industry.
Looking ahead, Mirvis is focused on expanding Desolas Mezcal’s presence both domestically and internationally. With strategic market expansion and new product development, she aims to further elevate the brand and introduce more consumers to the nuanced world of mezcal. "My vision for Desolas is to introduce the different facets of mezcal and educate consumers about it," she explains, aiming to redefine and expand the category.
GG Mirvis and Desolas Mezcal are reshaping how consumers perceive and enjoy mezcal, offering a fresh take on a traditional spirit that appeals to a broad audience. Through her innovative approach and commitment to authenticity, Mirvis is not only a trailblazer in the industry but also a role model for future entrepreneurs.

The Journey of Major Eric Dominijanni from Marine to Master Scotch Blender
With Carece Slaughter
Meet Retired Marine Major Eric Dominijanni, the visionary founder behind Fior Scotch, the first and only U.S. veteran-owned and Blackowned Scotch in the market. This exceptional spirit is crafted with the same meticulous attention to detail that defined Major Dominijanni’s 20-year military career, which included three tours in Iraq and two in Okinawa. The inception of Fior Scotch began with an "Infinity Bottle" — a personal blend of outstanding scotches that Major Dominijanni refined until it reached perfection. His commitment to excellence led him to collaborate with an industry expert to faithfully reproduce this unique blend on a larger scale.
Launched in 2023, Fior Scotch quickly garnered critical acclaim, securing double gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the New York World Spirits Competition, as well as a prestigious 93 rating from The New York International Spirits Competition. Major Dominijanni, now a proud Miami resident, embeds his vibrant and resilient spirit into every bottle, ensuring that Fior is not merely a testament to superior scotch-making but also a tribute to the community and veterans he continues to serve. This interview delves into his journey from the battlefields to the distilleries, highlighting how his diverse experiences have shaped the distinct character of Fior Scotch.

CRAFTING FIOR
Carece: Eric, Can you share the moment or experience that first ignited your passion for scotch?
Eric Dominijanni: Certainly, My passion for scotch was ignited quite unexpectedly due to a particularly bad drink experience during my time in the Marine Corps. Stationed in Twentynine Palms, California, a culinary desert of sorts, I found myself missing the vibrant flavors I enjoyed while stationed in the Caribbean. One weekend, while visiting friends in Los Angeles, I was offered what turned out to be a terrible drink, which tasted like "battery acid." Later that evening, while looking for a good drink, I visited a local Scotch bar. At the time, I knew nothing about Scotch. Intrigued by the various types of Scotch, I spent the evening asking questions and learning about the world of Scotch. This encounter sparked a profound appreciation and curiosity for Scotch that has grown ever since.
As a classically trained chef with experiences in the U.S., Thailand, and Singapore, how do your culinary skills intersect with your scotch blending process?
My experiences across diverse culinary landscapes have significantly shaped my approach to scotch blending. In New York, the challenge was perfecting both simple and complex dishes, teaching me the importance of balancing flavors to appeal to diverse palates. This skill is crucial in scotch blending, where the aim is not just to appeal to connoisseurs but to create a versatile profile that all can appreciate. The goal with Fior Scotch has been to blend a variety of flavors—spicy, salty, savory—to produce a scotch that offers a symphony of tastes that satisfies widely, much like a well-crafted meal.
The concept of an "Infinity Bottle" is fascinating. Could you delve into how this practice evolved into the creation of Fior Scotch?
The Infinity Bottle concept began as a personal endeavor, merging my passion for hosting and my culinary creativity. This practice involved blending different scotches to enhance preferred flavors like smokiness and sweetness. Continually adjusted over time, this evolving blend became perfect in my eyes and was met with enthusiastic approval from friends. This positive reception prompted me to transition

my personal blend into Fior Scotch, initially intended just for friends and family. With growing demand, we expanded production. This evolution from a hobby to a professional offering showcases how a passion project, fueled by genuine enthusiasm and the right expertise, can transform into an acclaimed product.
With a rich history that spans combat, global culinary training, and competitive cooking, how have these varied experiences influenced your approach to both entrepreneurship and scotch production?
My eclectic background, from the disciplined environments of military service to the diverse kitchens around the world, has deeply shaped my entrepreneurial approach and the creation of Fior Scotch. Each experience contributed uniquely to my perspective on scotch production.
In the military, I learned the importance of precision, strategy, and resilience—qualities that are integral to entrepreneurship. This disciplined approach has influenced how I manage Fior Scotch, especially in maintaining high standards throughout the production process. Culinary training across different cultures, from the intense flavors of Thai cuisine to the subtle complexities of Singaporean dishes, has taught me the art of balance and fusion. These principles are central to blending Fior Scotch, where I aim to harmonize distinct flavors into a singular, enjoyable experience.
Competitive cooking instilled in me a spirit of innovation and excellence. It's not just about cooking; it's about outperforming expectations and continually striving to improve. This is mirrored in how Fior evolves, constantly refining the blend and the brand to appeal to a global audience.
Together, these experiences have not only crafted a richer flavor profile for Fior Scotch but have also ingrained a robust, adaptable business model that is prepared to meet challenges headon, much like preparing for a tough service in a kitchen or a mission in the field.
Fior Scotch has been recognized with several prestigious awards shortly after its launch. What, in your view, sets Fior apart in the crowded world of spirits?
Fior stands out in the spirits market primarily because it's a newcomer challenging long-established norms. The scotch and whisky industry is deeply rooted in tradition, where loyalty to well-known brands often overshadows newer entrants. Fior disrupts this status quo by not only entering the market as a new brand but also by distinguishing itself as the first and only black-owned scotch label recognized on a global scale.
The essence of Fior’s uniqueness lies in its blend. Unlike traditional single malts that are bound by the specific characteristics of their regions, Fior Scotch embraces a broader palette, allowing us to blend the best attributes from various profiles. This flexibility results in a scotch that is accessible to a broader audience, offering a balance of peatiness, smokiness, and brightness without being overwhelming in any aspect.
Our approach to blending ensures that Fior does not just conform to the typical regional flavors but instead creates a harmonious profile that resonates with both new scotch drinkers and seasoned enthusiasts. This capability to blend diverse flavors into a cohesive and appealing product is what I believe truly sets Fior apart, making it not just a novelty but a preferred choice in the market.
As the first and only Black-owned and veteran-owned scotch brand, what challenges have you faced in the industry, and how have you overcome them?
Launching Fior as the first Black-owned and veteran-owned scotch brand came with its set of unique challenges and advantages. The support from the veteran community has been robust, due to the deep loyalty among military personnel. My Marine background has been instrumental, drawing enthusiastic backing from fellow veterans.
On the other hand, being a Black-owned scotch brand introduced different challenges, primarily due to entrenched stereotypes about demographic preferences in alcohol consumption. There was skepticism about the authenticity and market fit of a Black-owned business producing scotch, a spirit not traditionally associated with Black consumers. These stereotypes reflect broader societal biases that often categorize tastes and preferences by ethnicity or background.
resident.com | 105
I addressed these challenges directly by engaging with the community and participating in events aimed at broadening the representation in the spirits industry, such as the Taste of Black Spirits in Detroit. A particularly memorable moment was the reaction of an older Black gentleman at one event, who was excited and proud to see a Black man producing scotch. His response highlighted the importance of representation and the impact of seeing oneself reflected in new and unexpected arenas.
These experiences reinforced my commitment to not only crafting high-quality scotch but also challenging the narrative around who can create in this space. Fior's success is a testament to the fact that excellence and innovation in scotch production can come from any background, proving that the value of a spirit lies in the quality of the product and the passion of its makers, not their ethnicity or conventional expectations.
Fior's active engagement with initiatives that support military service members and veter-
ans is highly admirable. How do you envision Fior's ongoing role in aiding veterans and their families?
Fior’s commitment to supporting veterans and their families is deeply personal to me, reflecting my own experiences and gratitude towards those who have served. Growing up and throughout my college years, I faced significant financial hardships, often relying on the generosity of friends and the support structures available to me. These experiences deeply influenced my view on the importance of giving back, particularly to the veteran community that formed such a crucial part of my own journey.
During my time in the Marine Corps, I received incredible support, not just from within the organization but also from external veteran organizations and charitable groups. Programs like Operation Gratitude made tangible differences in my life, especially during deployments. These acts of kindness and support were pivotal, not just for me but for many of my comrades.
In light of this, Fior is actively involved in giving back to those who have served. We aim to support veterans through partnerships with organizations that make a real difference. Our goal isn’t just to "pay it forward" but to embed this practice into our core business philosophy. We commit a portion of our proceeds to veteran support groups, viewing it as our duty to support those who have provided us with so much. This commitment is about honoring our veterans with more than just words; it’s about providing real support that impacts their lives positively, just as they have impacted mine.
With Fior's success and your background in culinary arts, are there any plans to expand Fior's offerings, perhaps into other spirits or products that merge your culinary expertise with spirits?
Absolutely, there are definite plans to expand Fior’s offerings, tapping into my deep-rooted passion for the culinary arts. I am active in the spirits community by participating in tastings and contributing to charitable events. My goal

is to continuously innovate within Fior, whether that's through introducing new spirits or culinary-inspired products. This approach not only broadens Fior's portfolio but also enriches the cultural tapestry of the spirits industry, celebrating diversity and creativity in every bottle.
Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for Fior Scotch in the global spirits market, and how do you intend to innovate while maintaining the integrity of your original vision?
Our goal for Fior Scotch is to elevate it on a global scale, showcasing the potential of American innovation in a market deeply rooted in tradition. America's rise in the culinary and spirits sectors in the mid-90s highlighted our unique ability to blend cultural influences, a stark contrast to more traditional societies where culinary practices are rigidly inherited. At Fior, we channel this spirit of innovation by redefining scotch, blending diverse cultural elements to challenge and expand traditional scotch definitions.
We aim for Fior not only to be recognized for its quality but also to provoke discussions around the identity of spirits. It's about challenging entrenched perceptions and demonstrating that an American brand can excel in a field dominated by long-standing Scottish traditions. I am particularly eager to see Fior Scotch receive recognition for its quality from traditional scotch aficionados in Scotland, appreciating our unique blend irrespective of its American origins.
Ultimately, Fior's mission is about more than just business; it's a cultural endeavor to show that innovation can honor tradition while breaking new ground. We strive for Fior to be judged on the joy and flavor it brings to the table, challenging the conventional boundaries of scotch and inviting a global audience to rethink what makes a scotch exceptional.

New York Flavors Blossoming UNDER THE MIAMI SUN
By Carece Slaughter
In a trend that spells delight for food connoisseurs, the sizzling city of Miami is embracing a slice of New York's iconic dining scene. As the cultural and culinary lines blur between these two bustling metropolises, residents who once called New York home are finding comfort in the familiar—a phenomenon that rekindles old flames and creates new traditions under the palm-shaded skies of Miami.
Lucali's and Vitolo, two venerable names that have long commanded the respect of New York’s discerning palates are leading this flavorful migration. These establishments aren’t just opening their doors in a new city; they are weaving their legacy into the very fabric of Miami’s dining culture.
Lucali, known for its irresistibly authentic, thin-crust pizza, brings more than just a taste of Brooklyn to Miami Beach. It imports an ambiance—a dimly lit, casually elegant setting where each pie is a masterpiece crafted with artisanal precision. Mark Iacono’s dedication to quality and simplicity has found a new audience in Miami, an audience eager to savor these
traits that are often overshadowed in the flashy local culinary scene.
Meanwhile, Vitolo, a sanctuary for those craving heartwarming Italian-American cuisine, recreates its cherished New York charm in the heart of Miami. Here, classics like spaghetti and meatballs and chicken parmigiana are not merely meals but memories rekindled, shared anew with friends and families. Vitolo’s success lies not only in its flavors but in its ability to create a sense of belonging, a rare quality that turns diners into regulars.
The instant magic that patrons experience when reconnecting with these dining spots is a testament to the timeless appeal of quality and authenticity. As more New Yorkers find themselves relocating to Miami, the success of ventures like Lucali and Vitolo underscores a simple truth: good food knows no boundaries and great dining experiences are universal. This trend is not just a culinary expansion; it’s a cultural bridge, making the Miami dining scene richer and infinitely more vibrant.

A Slice of Brooklyn in Miami LUCALI'S CULINARY ARTISTRY
From its roots in a humble Brooklyn storefront, Lucali has blossomed into a beloved icon of artisan pizza, personified by its founder, Mark Iacono. An accidental chef with a profound love for his community, Iacono transformed a neighborhood candy store into Lucali, a name that now resonates with pizza aficionados far beyond the streets of New York. In Miami's Sunset Harbor, Lucali mirrors its Brooklyn counterpart's devotion to simplicity and quality, using locally sourced ingredients to create pizzas that are both soulful and sublime.
The Miami outpost of Lucali captures the essence of its original locale, retaining the intimate, candlelit ambiance that invites diners into Iacono's personal vision of dining. The décor is understated yet elegant, creating a warm backdrop to the culinary spectacle of Iacono handcrafting each pizza behind the marble counter. The magic of Lucali is not just in its food but in its ability to foster a connection with each guest, making it a cornerstone of Miami's dining scene just as it is in Brooklyn.

NOURISHING CHANGE Katherine Boulud's Culinary Crusade with Spoons Across America
By Hillary Latos
In the heart of a movement that blends culinary expertise with nutritional education, Katherine Boulud stands as a beacon of change. With a rich background as a chef and a transformative journey into nutrition education, Boulud has become a pivotal figure in Spoons Across America—a non-profit dedicated to cultivating healthier food choices among children. This exclusive interview peels back the layers of her passionate involvement, the organization's impactful curriculum, and the ambitious goals for their upcoming gala. As Boulud shares her personal journey from gourmet kitchens to the classrooms of America, we delve into the essence of teaching nutrition as a lifestyle, the collaborative efforts to enhance school meals, and the broader mission to influence food policy on a national level. Through her eyes, we explore the transformative power of educating the younger generation about the joys of healthy eating and the ripple effect it can have on society.
How did you first get involved with Spoons Across America?
This is my fifth year co-chairing. It's a challenge to surpass last year, but we're committed to doing just that. My journey with Spoons Across America began through my aunt Kathy, who is
close friends with Mitzi Perdue, honored by the organization that year. Originally a chef, I transitioned into nutrition after getting married, returning to school for a Bachelor of Science and later a Master of Science in Nutrition Education. As I was studying and raising my children, Aunt Kathy introduced me to Spoons Across America. The organization's mission to educate children on healthy eating and integrate better meals into school cafeterias immediately resonated with me. Their curriculum, which spans from kindergarten to sixth grade, perfectly aligned with my desire to teach children about healthy food choices early on.
How many schools have adopted your curriculum, and what impact does it have?
Our curriculum is implemented in approximately 20-30 schools, reaching over 20,000 children in New York City and across the nation, including those engaged in our homeschool program. We emphasize teaching children to maintain an open mind about trying new foods. Our collaboration with the mayor's office on food policy, and honoring figures like Kate McKenzie, underscore the importance of incorporating our curriculum into broader educational and nutritional policies. She went
through Columbia Teachers College with the Nutrition Education Program, and essentially has written the 10 year plan for New York City's food policy, to not only improve all the other elements relating to food policy, but also in school lunches, and educational programs. Our goal is to excite children about food exploration, making them eager to try meatless Mondays and plant-powered Fridays, thus ensuring the food served is enjoyed rather than wasted.
Can you tell us about your path to becoming a chef and how it influenced your work with Spoons Across America?
My fascination with food started early, encouraged by my mother's inventive cooking. My culinary journey was enriched by international travel and study, I studied in the south of France in high school, and then in Rome in college. After dabbling in media and politics post-college, my passion for hosting dinner parties steered me back to the kitchen. During my years of training in the kitchen I worked at renowned dining establishments in Paris, Bali and the South of France leading me to explore various global cuisines and ultimately to a career in fine dining. I honed my skills at Café Boulud
resident.com | 121
and other prestigious establishments, embracing the hospitality industry's communal spirit. My subsequent involvement in charity work, such as City Meals on Wheels, and a deep-seated belief in the importance of early nutritional education drew me to Spoons Across America. Teaching children about healthy eating from a young age, I believe, is as crucial as teaching them a new language, setting the foundation for healthier lifestyle choices later in life.
What can we expect from this year’s spring gala?
This year, we aim to spotlight nutrition education's critical role on a national scale, seeking both government and private support. Partnering with NYU Steinhardt, we're focusing on measuring our program's effectiveness to better demonstrate its impact. We plan to honor Marion Nestle who is the professor emeritus at NYU and has also written countless books on the current food situation in America and what is defining healthy food. We are also honoring Daphne Oz for her work with HealthCorps that support children and teens across America with nutritional and fitness education to help empower them to take ownership of their health. As a television personality she instrumental in influencing families and children to cook at home on TV shows such as FOX’s MasterChef Junior, ABC’s The Chew and The
Good Dish. The gala will also serve as a platform to celebrate the success of initiatives like our partnership with NYU's Food Lab, which will help us leverage our results to attract further support. The gala will also serve as a platform to reinforce the importance of integrating our programs into a comprehensive food policy, making nutrition education a priority for future generations.
What changes are needed to enhance public awareness of food and nutrition?
A significant shift is required towards recognizing the importance of nutrition in medical education and public awareness. There's a growing need to view food as medicine, capable of addressing and preventing health issues without immediate reliance on pharmaceuticals. By fostering a deeper understanding of the relationship between diet and health among both healthcare professionals and the public, we aim to promote healthier eating habits through informed dietary decisions, envisioning a future where food literacy is an integral part of our healthcare system.

RENAISSANCE TUSCANY IL CIOCCO RESORT & SPA
Your Comprehensive Guide to Luxury Stay and Exploration
By Brandon Travin
Unlocking Tuscany's Charms: Insider Tips, Activities, and Dining at Renaissance Hotel Tuscany
Arrival
Driving up the winding road to the Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa, I was filled with anticipation and wonder. Surrounded by trees, sparkling waters, and rolling hills created a dreamlike landscape that took my breath away. As I stepped out of the car at the top of the mountain, I took in the view and breathed in the clean air. I had made it to Tuscany and was ecstatic to be there.
I checked into the hotel and was greeted by the receptionist, who assigned me the top room. I couldn’t help but smile as I entered my room, walked onto the balcony, and could see for miles. After settling my bags, I went downstairs to meet Jody, the CEO of Diamond PR, who was running the trip. She told me the intriguing history of the Renaissance Hotel Tuscany and how it was once used for animals. She showed me the pool with stunning views. I sat outside for a few minutes, taking in the views before returning to my room to reply to some emails.
Later that evening, I went downstairs for dinner and enjoyed the mouthwatering Renaissance burger, fried calamari with tomato dip, and a refreshing glass of Chardonnay. The meal was fantastic, and the Chardonnay added a touch of freshness and the taste of Italy. I dined comfortably at a table in the lobby by the fire as I prepared for the trip to begin.
First Day
The first day, I started with a leisurely wakeup. Opening the curtains to a panoramic view outside the Renaissance Hotel's windows and balcony was special. Taking a deep breath and looking out, I felt at peace and knew I was somewhere extraordinary. After enjoying the views, I got ready and headed down for breakfast. The delightful buffet and outdoor seating provided a relaxing setting to savor pineapple, eggs, and sausage—a great way to start the day.

fered French wines such as Pinot Noir, sparkling wine, and more. Established in 1999, the Podere Concori winery is of fantastic quality over quantity. Podere Concori has proved itself to be an organic, biodynamic winery that tastes smooth and fresh, all without preservatives. As the owner said, "We are about good grapes, not expensive machines." Podere Concori prides itself on the quality of its wines, which is reflected in its beautiful winery atop the Tuscany mountains.
After the winery tour, we sat inside, where they had a beautiful arrangement for us. We all sat around the table and enjoyed the food and the company. Homemade food surrounded us, and the sun-dried tomatoes on crisp toast, juicy tomatoes, fragrant olive oil, and salami were the freshest meals I have ever tasted. We discussed how the food here is clean, which truly warms your taste buds with its flavor and deliciousness. Along with the wonderful food, we were served smooth and tasty breakfast wine, white wine, and red wine. The atmosphere was
warm, with people sitting around the table, drinking wine and eating homemade food. As George,Regional Managing Director at SHANER GROUP wisely said, "This is living, not existing.”
Rejuvenated from the wonderful, engaging, and enlightening tour and meal at Podere Concori, we returned to the hotel to get ready for dinner. Dinner was held in the historic, small town near the hotel Barga. Though small in size, with about 10,000 people, Barga’s rich history, culture, and richness of Barga don’t seem small. You can feel that as you walk around the beautiful town with its amazing architecture and details, such as ornate door knobs, intricate sculptures, and grand churches, that signify the Italian culture and the authenticity of the town In Badga, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner at La Altrana, where we had a four-course meal highlighted by the rigatoni, which was amazing. Of course, with the meal, we had red wine, fantastic conversations, and wonderful service. The night was pure magic.
Second Day
The next day started off with hiking in Cinque Borghi, a small, nestled village on the mountaintop. The town is truly authentic, offering culture, views, and appreciation for beauty and Italian life. The hike up Cinque Borghi is an easy and beautiful 45-minute ride from the Renaissance Hotel. After this journey of experiencing a remarkable area of Tuscany, we rewarded ourselves with lunch at Local Trattoria. Local Trattoria is a hidden gem located in Pian De Fume. It serves fresh pasta, fantastic local wine, decadent desserts, and an unmatched location that exudes the Italian life.
Shortly afterward, we returned to the hotel to experience the chef class the Renaissance Hotel offers. Now, it was our turn—our chef prepared the kitchen for us to make our meal. We were to make chicken with some amazing spices and ravioli from scratch. Workstations were set up for prepping chicken, cutting carrots, and fragrant spices. We used a hand-

cranked pasta machine for the ravioli, where we rolled up the meat and made the ravioli ourselves. The experience of working without a chef to make our own dinner in the kitchen was fun, enlightening, and an unforgettable way to learn Italian cooking behind the scenes. For dinner, we enjoyed our homemade meal at La Veranda, the hotel restaurant that offers an exquisite environment.
Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa offered an enchanting and unmatched experience of local Italy, breathtaking countryside, and experiences, such as the winery, hikes, food, and wine. This journey was more than a trip, it was an awakening to the beauty and wonder that exists in every corner of our magnificent world.

The New York Women’s Foundation (NYWF) held two events in New York City, a gathering at the Ford Foundation for an in-person and virtual release of the findings from the first phase of the NYC Fund for Girls and Young Women of Color (GYWOC), which also welcomed new grantee partners focused on supporting the mental health of girls, young women and gender expansive youth of color throughout New York City.
In addition, members of the NYWF community gathered to celebrate Women’s History Month alongside host, the Shah Garg Foundation. Together, the Foundations immersed themselves in the Making Their Mark exhibition, a curated display featuring the works of over eighty artists from the Shah Garg Collection.
The first fund of its kind in the United States, the NYC Fund for Girls and Young Women of Color (GYWOC) is a collaborative effort that brings together a growing group of diverse philanthropic funders to promote the progress of young women of color whose ambitions, voice, capacities and identities have long been dismissed or derailed. Started in 2015, The Fund envisions a creating a city that offers every opportunity for all girls and young women of color, to succeed economically and socially by offering meaningful and holistic support to or-
ganizations and programs led by and for young women and TGNC youth of color.
When this Fund was established in 2015, the creators did not imagine the changes which would shake the United States and the rest of the world. Over the past decade the world experienced some dramatic events that included the election of a conservative government, racial reckonings, and the COVID-19 pandemic. During all these events, this overlooked population needed support and investment more than ever. Having The Fund meant, the ability to agilely support the organizations that provided strong leadership opportunities for girls, young women and youth of color and those which had a focus on collective advocacy for policy change. Moreover, the New York Women’s Foundation could use its participatory grantmaking approach to enable the Fund to create spaces for collaboration and shared learnings across organizations.
This week, members of our community gathered to celebrate Women’s History Month alongside our gracious host, the Shah Garg Foundation, and our partner Women of Culture. Together, we immersed ourselves in the Making Their Mark exhibition, a curated display featuring the works of over eighty artists from the Shah Garg Collection.
The evening was infused with the power of art and the spirit of solidarity as we came together to honor the incredible women artists whose work resonates deeply with social justice issues. In the words of Susan Sawyers, whose inspiration fueled this unforgettable event:
“Art helps us connect across cultural differences, across generations, but also with ourselves so that we can better understand our shared values. This idea is consistent with The New York Women’s Foundation’s core belief that grantee partners have the ability to advocate and implement their own visions for the communities and society. Artists do too!“
About The New York Women’s Foundation:
The New York Women’s Foundation creates an equitable and just future for women, girls, gender-expansive individuals and their families by investing in bold, community-led solutions to ignite action for gender, economic, and racial justice. Since 1987, The Foundation has invested $125 million in 500+ organizations, creating a vibrant community of grantees, philanthropists, advocates, innovators, and change-makers.
