Parking mess on 27th Main

Inspirational resident

The HSR Layout Sector-1 Welfare Association met with traffic inspector Rao Ganesh recently to discuss the inconvenience caused by vehicles parked on footpaths, particularly on 27th Main. The inspector promised to sort out all the problems and clear the footpath and also tow away the vehicles blocking pedestrian access.

There are good citizens that make you stand up and get inspired. One such neighbour inspired vociferous resident activist Kavitha Reddy recently in HSR Layout. “A neighbour is constructing a huge house in Sector 1, but the people living nearby never had a problem even for a single day,” she says. “Every day, his workers clean the road. The cement or sand is not dumped all over the place. He has even constructed the storm water drains on both sides of his building, even though that is not his responsibility. It’s rare to see citizens with such a high level of integrity.” It’s about time the other residents followed him.

NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS

Sustainable menstruation, what? Five residents of HSR Layout are doing their bit by promoting ‘sustainable menstruation’ across Bangalore. The team of Smita, Shanthi, Chitra, Krupa and Padmashree are part of a campaign called ‘Green the Red’. “Sustainable menstruation is about using menstrual hygiene products that are safer for our bodies, safe for the environment and do not endanger the health and lives of those working in the waste management sector,” says Smita Kulkarni. “These products are available in the Indian market, but not many know about their existence.” On International Women's Day, the Green the Red campaign led these residents to educate women at work places about new-age menstrual hygiene products that are comfortable, environmentally-sustainable and economical in the long run. At these sessions, they showed easy ways of using menstrual cups and cloth pads, among other things. Events were conducted at corporates, apartments, schools and hospitals by setting up outreach stalls at women’s day events across the city. More of this, please.

Home composting for BBMP

Vani Murthy with BBMP JC, Veerabhadraswamy

Education begins from home. If BBMP is telling people that each ward should segregate its own waste, how about getting its officials to compost their own waste too? That’s precisely what happened last month when solid waste management round table members (SWMRT) Vani Murthy, Shanthi Tummala and volunteers of HSR Citizen Forum trained BBMP workers of Bommanahalli zone. Compost Queen Vani Murthy demonstrated aerobic composting using an aerated container and dry leaves. She urged everyone to consider every dry leaf falling from the tree as money. Every attendee added a fist of waste and a fist of cocopeat in the composting container to get a feel of how simple composting is. The filled up container will be in the zonal office for a month, so that everyone realises that there is no smell and all can share the compost after it is done. Aerobic composting with cocobeans in drums with holes is best, say some experts.

HSR News Through Pictures This pothole in front of the HDFC ATM on 24th Main in Parangipalya is lying unattended for the last few months, allege residents. A complaint by Swagata was raised in January, but BBMP is yet to act on _it. If you have similar complaints on pesky potholes, mail us with pic to get it published (residentswatchmag@gmail.com).

This frequent burning of garbage at Agara Lake needs to be stopped immediately. Not only is a thick cloud of smoke enveloping the lake and the surroundings, it's setting a bad precedent in HSR Layout. The residents allege that the garbage contractor is behind this but the contractor refuses to own up. Then who are the real culprits and how will BBMP bring them to book?

Residents and shopkeepers in the area teamed up with the HSR traffic police led by the dynamic inspector Rao Ganesh Janardhan to erect this traffic circle on 24th Main, near Somasundrapalya.

SUMMER WOES

Beat the heat Adopt water conservation 100 CCTV measures, saycameras water warriors

for HSR residents

By SAFIYA SAYEED

HSR residents like Lalithamba V call themselves ‘Water Warriors’. She is part of the city team that is advocating the best ways to conserve water and beat water shortage By OUR FEATURE WRITER during summer. “Saving water is the need of the hour,” she says. “Bengaluru Water Warriors are campaigning for water conservation and rain water harvesting in the city. Join hands, adopt and implement. Volunteers seriously interested in this campaign can join us to implement the same in their area.” Last month, Bengaluru Water Warriors organised a walkathon at Kanteerava Stadium to highlight the acute water shortage that the city is facing and how to counteract it, including the celebration of an eco-friendly Holi. Meanwhile, at Zee school, a skit was organised on water conservation by HSR resident Krupa and her team. The HSR Citizen Forum did a similar act at Lawrence school to sensitise the students and staff on water conservation. In addition, there are other ways to minimise water usage like going for a waterless car wash courtesy services like Eco Wash (see Page 30) or installing aerators in taps that will let the water out in sprinkles rather than pour profusely. Some residents like Lalithamba collect the RO reject water and reuse it for mopping floors, flushing tanks and rinsing vessels. Says another resident Sankar: “I have been reusing RO water for the last three years for every activity, except cooking and drinking.” Do it yourself and spread it to others. Now. 20 April 2017

Iblur Lake restoration begins 100 CCTV cameras

The water body will be revived after eight years of neglect

for HSR residents

By MUKUND KUMAR

BBMP lakes team led by BV Satish, Jagannath Rao and Shilpa decided to take over the lake. The Chief Minister’s visit to the lake cemented the development plans for the lake. The BBMP will now be starting the restoration works, starting with the sewage diversion followed by de-watering, de-weeding and de-silting of the lake bed. This will be followed by the bund development and the overall restoration works. This year, a good monsoon could bring a welcome respite to local residents. Now is the time for citizens to come forward. The present may have been secured by the able team of the BBMP lakes team. The future sustainability of the lake lies solely with the RWAs and communities of neighbouring Iblur and Bellandur - to ensure that sewage and garbage dumping does not happen.

Observe the Outer Ring Road (ORR) stretch from Agara to Iblur Sarjapur/ORR junction. As the road veers towards the left, you may have seen a beautiful serene lake, more By OUR FEATURE WRITER than eight years ago. Now all that is left to see is a bed of water hyacinth, with sewage incessantly flowing into the lake and heaps of garbage dumped into it. Iblur Lake is a sad story of neglect. As the realty development in the neighbouring Ambalipura and Harlur gained momentum, the existing sewage drains burst and eventually, the sewage was carried into the lake. Add to that, the shrinking of actual lake area due to road expansion. Encroachment by individuals at the lake perimeter compounded matters. The existing fence came apart and the dumping of garbage still continues unabated. Many tempos and vans use the lake bund for parking as well. Bellandur and Iblur residents are entirely dependant on underground water, in the near absence of Cauvery water. If the lake dies out, it would be converted into another high-rise, with no place for underground water to get recharged. In the beginning of 2013, local residents and Resident Mukund Kumar is a resident of Bellandur and a Welfare Associations (RWA) put their heads together and former Ward Committee member of BBMP. formed the Iblur Lake Forum, an informal federation of RWAs, to restore the lake. Between 2013 and 2016, LAKE PROTECTION several departments intervened: Karnataka State The other lakes for which tenders Pollution Control Board, BWSSB, BBMP and BDA whose have been called by BBMP include sole goal was to stop the sewage inflow. The BDA Panathur, Bhattarahalli, completed the inner fencing of the lake but could not Garudacharpalya/Achchanakere, take up the restoration work thereafter. Subsequently, Siddapura and Horamavu Agara. land encroachments came up but eventually dealt with firmly by the Deputy Commissioner’s office. In 2016, the
