Tackling nonsensical neigbours

Separate ducts for utility cables

If you are a resident opposed to errant neighbours, there could be a few solutions for you."The person who lives next door never listens to anyone," complains Sector 1 resident Kavitha Reddy. "They give mixed waste, throw garbage at will. He never follows rules and creates nuisance in the locality. Since I told the BBMP guys not to collect mixed waste from them, they are now trying to provoke me by throwing garbage on the road and in my garden area too." Sector 4 resident Suresh Bhaskaran has a solution. "Once my friend had this issue with one neighbour in Jayanagar," he recalls. "Our friend did a good thing. Simply threw back the waste into his neighbour's house through the kitchen window. It landed in their food and created a mess, but they followed the rules after that. A similar issue happened in HSR. We picked the waste and gave it back to our neighbour in a sweet manner. They realised their folly. We did this only as a last resort when we became completely helpless. Sometimes it works."

With frequent road cutting issues ruining roads and leading to water logging and potholes, the residents want the authorities to have one separate duct that is used by all utility agencies. This way, there won't be separate ducts by every utility agency. Thereby, a common pole can be used for everything. Today, Airtel has erected over 185 poles in HSR Layout alone to keep their cable boxes. Imagine if every utility is permitted to erect poles. Then, our roads will be lined by poles and not trees. "There has to be a meeting called by elected representatives, including all the department officials and citizens," says Sector 1 resident Kavitha Reddy. "Only then can we have clarity on road digging. We can agree to road cuttings for BWSSB emergencies but not all of the digging is for that. The roads being cut for building houses need serious fines for violations. The building owner who does the road cutting has to re-install it properly if the civic agencies don't as it does not cost much. “All this can happen when we have a functioning ward committee as per the High Court order and regular coordination meetings between various civic agencies." BBMP Commissioner Manjunatha Prasad did obey the High Court dictat. But not one of the 500 people who applied to become a member of the ward committees across the city was inducted into them. Such is the state of affairs in Bangalore today. So what happened? The local politicians got their 'yes' men inducted into the ward committees, making the entire exercise, futile.

Tree trimming issues

When Bescom turns up to remove the branches, ensure it's only the branches that are impeding the road and the cables. Cutting overhanging branches that block the easy passage of school buses is fine, but simply chopping the tree branches for no apparent reason is practically killing the tree. Object and you will be heard. Be vigilant and be all eyes.

HSR is 'Hub for Social Responsibility'

Practical ways to beat traffic

HSR boasts of some great eco champions, prompting one resident to rename it as 'Hub for Social Responsibility' instead of the original 'Hosur Sarjapur Road'. Apt, indeed. But much more needs to be done as civic apathy is rampant. However, such examples do give us hope that others will follow suit. According to resident Shanthi T, there is one house owner in HSR who is growing mangoes, guavas, jackfruits, bananas, custard apples, strawberries, radishes, tomatoes, beetroots, lettuces, palak methi, beans, double beans, brinjal and so on. "So much amazing work and so many green champions and activists in HSR layout," exclaims Sector 2 resident Shashidhara K. "We truly are a unique layout in all of Bangalore."

Sector 2 resident Lakshmi Srivatsan has practical tips that could help the management of traffic in HSR Layout. "The cops should work on traffic management rather than catch those riding without helmets. If people choose to put their lives at risk, it's a choice they have made. Why waste tax payers' money, especially deploying 3-4 cops to catch one guy while a traffic jam a few metres away is ignored. “Citizens need to be educated on parking rules and driving on the left side of the road. We have big cars parked right in the middle of the road. Double and triple parking is rampant all over HSR. Towing away such vehicles on a regular basis is required. Cars are also parked in the corner of road turnings that make it difficult for vehicle users to navigate. We must educate citizens to make an imaginary circle while moving from one road to another and always stick to the left side of the road." For parking issues, Residents Watch urges its readers to use the Public Eye mobile app to penalise the offenders without getting into an argument with them. Residents like Sankar have reported several such issues and punished frequent offenders. Similarly, Kubera TVS and Solar Autos are using up the footpaths in front of their shops on 19th Main. Will the BBMP and the traffic police act on these frequent offenders, please?

The BBMP Grounds controversy Only sporting activities can be held at the BBMP Grounds opposite Gyan Srishti school. If anyone asks you to pay up to conduct a sporting event, they are doing it illegally. Similarly, no permanent concrete structures can come up either with the help of local politicians or government officials as Sector 2 Residents Welfare Association has given several formal letters on the matter. That's the only playing space available for HSR and it remains to be kept that way. No commercial ventures or concrete structures, please. When a proposal for a stadium was put forward by the BBMP to then BBMP administrator Vijay Bhaskar, he dismissed the idea and ordered for status quo to be maintained.

Civic issues, anyone?

Pig problem? Big problem

Contact BBMP joint engineer Ramesh if your area contractor isn't doing his job despite repeated complaints. Call Ramesh at 99868-35425. For numbers of other civic utility providers and local politicians, refer to Page 32. For numbers of odd jobs providers like carpenters, plumbers, drivers, maids and so on, turn to Page 33. And if you would like to join a recreation club in HSR, even those are listed down on Page 33. Make the most of Residents Watch and fully live out your life.

Pigs are all over HSR Layout, and particularly in Sector 2 and 3. Early this year, the pig contract was finally awarded to a contractor by the BBMP. However, residents cannot call the contractor directly. They will have to complain to the BBMP. With adequate police protection to ward off the pig mafia, the BBMP will get the contractor to execute his job. It has been more than four months and nothing has been done on this front so far. The good news is that residents in Somasundrapalya did see BBMP officials catching pigs in their area. They might soon turn their eyes on HSR.

Footpath clearance: Top priority The residents are not able to use the footpaths because of some obstruction or the other. Sector 4 resident Vijaylakshmi says that the tree outgrowth forces walkers to use the road instead. RS Hiremath from Sector 2 says, "All the foot paths encroached by hawkers and shops need to be cleared. HSR does not even have 100 metres of footpath without some obstruction or encroachment." We urge the BBMP and MLA Satish Reddy to conduct an intensive drive to take back the footpaths for pedestrian usage. It's about time.

Daylight robberies in HSR In Sector 3, a thief entered a house at 1.30pm. "He threatened the lady in the house with knife and took away gold and cash," reports Dr Kittur. "I request the police to intensify their patrolling to prevent thefts." Residents want the police to strictly implement the beat system to ensure the cops visit every street without fail.

Install aerators for your house The Mahaveer Seasons apartment folks in Sector 2 have installed 375 aerators in all their utility and wash-basin taps across 120 flats. By this, they intend to save atleast 50% of water. Looking at their success story, many more apartment blocks in and around HSR Layout are interested. If you are, contact Sector 3 resident Karunaprasad Kanavi at 94495-44742.

Cauvery water contamination in some parts of Sector 3 caught the residents offguard. Some complained of throat infections. The BWSSB took a few days to set right the anomaly.

Despite complaints from residents, BBMP officials helped a building owner to dig up 19th Main Road. This is illegal because it cannot be dug up within a year of having retarred the road. We hope the road will be properly asphalted in record time.

A Santro car's passenger side of the window was shattered by a thief in the wee hours in Sector 3 outside a resident's house. He took off with the music deck. The moral of the story? If the deck is detachable, keep it away. Similarly, avoid keeping any valuables, keys or even empty laptop bags to attract thieves.

24th Main Road is being dug up at several places by the BWSSB. It's understandable if it's an emergency measure. But we pray that they fix the roads properly after the leak is fixed.

Preventing crime and saving people That's community policing. Meet its convenor for HSR, Vikas Gnanamurthy By ZAHID H JAVALI

A 75-year-old man with a memory problem went missing on Bannerghatta Road. All he said to the police constable was that his house is under the flyover. But every flyover that the auto driver took him to was incorrect. So the auto driver dropped him off at HSR police station. For four days, the cops kept him at an NGO hostel and took him to the very same flyovers he had visited before. When Kasavanahalli resident Vikas Gnanamurthy who has his office in HSR Layout was asked by the cops to help out, the issue was resolved. "Since he was speaking Bhojpuri, I called one tile guy I knew who spoke Bhojpuri. During their conversation, the old man mentioned Meenakshi. I took that to mean, near Meenakshi Temple on Bannerghatta Road. So I called the neighbouring Hulimavu police station if they had any 'missing persons' complaint. My hunch was right and the man was reunited with his family on the 11th day (see his photo on Page 15)." Vikas was one of the first persons to join the community policing wing of HSR Layout police station when it was set up one-and-a-half years ago. FEEDBACK

100 CCTV cameras The Residents Watch readership survey Wefor are listening, are you? HSRwhere residents By SINDHU PR Residents Watch made its first appearance in the winter of 2012. It will turn five this October. Much has changed By OUR FEATURE WRITER in HSR Layout ever since for better and worse. The neighbourhood has become a magnet for rapid commercialisation, something that Indiranagar and Koramangala experienced earlier. With wide roads planned for a model neighbourhood by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), HSR Layout is the neighbouring residents' envy. But that distinction is soon fading away with illegal buildings galore, rampant encroachment of footpaths by shops and eateries, contamination of storm water drains with sewage and kitchen discharges from eateries and homes, and ofcourse our inept and corrupt civic agencies. Residents Watch has been recording all of this and more for the last five years. We have not wavered in our mission to give you the best, without favouring any particular caste, creed, political party or business interest. BHOOMI Mr & Mrs Krishnamurthy's eco-friendly house in Sector 6 deserves to be emulated across HSR By ZAHID H JAVALI

August 2017

Imagine a mud house in HSR Layout that is self-sustaining all the way. Take that to mean, no wet waste being given to the BBMP. The biogas that is generated goes into cooking, effectively replacing Liquified Petroleum Gas, atleast 90% of it. The waste water from bathrooms, washing vessels and clothes is recycled for toilet flush and maintaining their all-organic terrace garden where they grow atleast ten vegetables and ten species of flowers at any given time. Compressed Stabilised Earth Blocks are used to keep the house cool during the summer and warm during the winter. Complementing them are earthen pots, earthen cups and Mangalore tiles that are used as slab fillers to minimise the use of concrete. That’s not all. Terracotta conical pots in the roof area serve as natural exhaust fans, thereby reducing the use of cement, while terracotta tiles inside the house minimise the use of cement and keeps the house cool. The glass roofing works as a natural source of lighting while the high ceiling, tall doors and large windows ensure natural ventilation. The entire house is lit by LED lamps, effectively reducing electricity bills by 30-50% depending on the season. Stone benches, wooden pillars (reclaimed timber) and steel columns reduce the use of concrete and add to the aesthetics of the house. Hot water is used to mop the floors instead of chemicals. "Sustainable living is

easy and economical," says IT consultant Pradeep Krishnamurthy (34) who has built such a house in Sector 6. "If I had to buy a flat, it would have cost me more than double of what I have spent on this first floor house." Initially, Pradeep's parents and wife Ashwini had second thoughts on the entire mud house concept. But as the building gradually took shape, they bought into the idea. "My parents built a conventional home on the ground floor in 1998," says Pradeep. "When my son was born and we felt a shortage of space, we eventually decided to build a house on the first floor." The idea for the earth-friendly home came to him through an office colleague in 2009. "It took me 2-3 years to convince my wife and my parents. Even after they gave me the go-ahead, they were fully convinced after 25% of the building came up. We have to thank our architect Sanjay Jain from Tropic Responses for turning our dreams into reality. The savings from building such a house are phenomenal. "There is zero wet waste going out of my house. And the byproduct of our biogas plant is manure that helps my terrace garden. We recycle about 500 litres of water everyday and reuse it in the house through natural organic water filtration techniques." Adds Ashwini: "We have no guilt at all when our maid liberally uses the water because it's all going to come back to us." "I don't understand the concept of plastering your house with sand and cement," says Pradeep. "We have used less than 50% of such materials in our home. Only labour is expensive and time consuming. The compressed brick isn't easy to cut; it requires machines. But once you get through that, the rest is smooth sailing." Sums up Pradeep: "Through this house, I want to show people that sustainable living is not a myth but actually practical and easy. Our neigbours are inspired. The other day, they saw us using coconut shells as pots. Now, they are doing the same."

The project has ensured minimal usage of concrete wherever possible. One of the main areas is in the roof slabs. The staircase is a blend of concrete and natural stones. Recently, the house played host to over 160 students who wanted to understand the practicality of sustainable living. The topmost picture on the left shows a unique way to use earthen pots for the skylight and natural exhaust for hot and cold air ventilation.

Poisonous plants in gardens and homes Plants purify our air, but be careful with some of them By DEEPA MOHAN

August 2017

Toxic plants can be a hazard to children and pets, as well as elderly persons with dementia. Though it would be better to keep all plants out of the reach of those who might crush, eat, or taste them, it is not always possible to prevent accidental encounters. If you’re worried your loved ones may ingest your houseplants, you may want to keep the plants in this article out of your house. Poisoning can occur from eating or touching leaves, ingesting berries, blossoms, or roots, skin contact with sap or juices, eating soil and drinking water from plant tray. Most nurseries don’t provide warning labels on their potted plants that indicate possible toxicity. Before you purchase that house or garden plant, learn which common plants can pose the biggest threat to the more vulnerable members of your home. Here are a few plants that can cause major problems, and in severe cases, death, if ingested. Dieffenbachia or 'Dumb Cane' This is the common houseplant with an uncommon name. Tree plantation drive in HSR

100 CCTV cameras Boulevards are better than random planting, say residents for HSR residents

By SAFIYA SAYEED

Volunteers of HSR Citizen Forum are going around the layout to increase the tree cover of HSR. With the blessings of MLA Satish Reddy and the assistance of BBMP, they went about planting trees in front of residential and commercial areas. "The forest department agreed to sponsor 600 trees, electric drill and labour to plant the trees, provided the volunteers from the Forum identified the locations," says Dr Shanthi Tummala, a dentist turned environment activist and member of Solid Waste Management Round Table. BBMP agreed to provide electricity and the corporator provided the moral backing to deal with the owners’ objections. Work began in July and so far, over 300 saplings have been planted in places identified by the volunteers. However, some residents, well-versed with the topography and rules of town planning, are crying foul. "Some residents thought the tree would grow up and block the ‘beauty’ of their house," says Smita. "A few commercial places objected because it ate into their parking space. Between the corporator Gurumurthy Reddy, BBMP AEE Venkatesh and resident activists, the arguments were resolved." Says volunteer Chitra, “We ensured the planting was between two compound walls so that it didn’t obstruct any gate. Only if the owner consented, we planted in between.” Most of the saplings provided are low-maintenance trees like honge, neem, sampige, tabubia rosea, mahogany, kaadu badami and nerale. AEE Venkatesh (94806-85445) can be contacted if any footpath is not beautified after the tree planting. The shopkeepers say that commercial areas should be free from tree planting

because it blocks the facade and limits parking spaces. Importantly, they say that they should be consulted. "Every area in HSR is a commercial area," says Smita. "Where people strongly objected or the concrete was more than eight inches thick, it was left alone. Communication has never been BBMP's strong point. If we say they should not do things if they can’t plan it properly, nothing will get done." Volunteers claim that a distance of 10 feet is maintained between saplings, but Residents Watch has noticed that this really isn’t the case on some occasions. Looking at all the concerns of residents, Sector 6 resident Pradeep Krishnamurthy has suggested a better way of greening neighbourhoods. "After the tree is planted, and when it grows, it could damage all the underground utilities, particularly Gail gas pipelines which could lead to fire hazards. “Instead, boulevards can be created based on the infrastructure mapping. For example, a main street with only Ashoka trees because there might be high tension wires and underground cables, a street with dwarf local trees, a street with only flowering plants, a street with fruiting plants. This idea will ensure planned planting and no future hassles rather than random planting based on what's available from the forest department." RESIDENTSWATCH.IN

Forfor dream vacations, head to Cafe Travel in HSR Layout HSR residents By OUR FEATURE WRITER HSR resident Sahadev Chincholikar (25) gave up his full-time job as a graphic designer to become a travel consultant. Today, he runs Cafe Travel that offers tailor-made holidays to suit every budget, individual, group and corporate. From domestic and international air ticketing to hotels and cruises, visas and travel insurance, Cafe Travel does everything that involves transit. And that includes the filling of visa forms, assisting with visa documentation and filing the application on your behalf. "We offer offbeat and niche customised tours that a majority of other travel firms don't," says Sahadev. They include Trans-Siberian Rail Journeys, Amazon River Cruises, Culinary Tour of Spain, Cycling Tour of Northern Thailand / Laos, Electric Bike Tour of Nice, Rail Journey on The Ghan in Australia and the luxurious Rovos Rail in South Africa, among others. "It is based on the customer’s interests and preferences, and we offer 24x7 customer support through WhatsApp and phone calls. We don't compromise on the service quality even if the pricing is slightly higher than other tour operators. Attention to detail is one of our USPs." Surprises are part of their package. For example, for a honeymoon couple, Cafe Travel arranged a complimentary cake in their room where they stayed for the first night along with a bouquet in their car for the transfer from airport to the hotel when they arrived. Sahadev's journey into travel is no less interesting. He began as a graphic designer in a design and advertising firm in Hyderabad. Later, he freelanced as a graphic designer. Soon, he realised that travel and food is where his passion lay. He was awarded two diplomas by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for 34

completing a course in Travel and Tourism and got his first job at MakeMyTrip. After gaining experience with a couple of top-notch companies, he worked on a short assignment with a travel company in Doha, Qatar. Last year, he began freelancing as an independent travel consultant, and this year, Cafe Travel was born. The future of Cafe Travel? "We plan to take up corporate and business travel, and even venture into Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events (M.I.C.E) related travel. We are also planning to launch group tours offering offbeat experiences in the next one or two years." Cafe Travel 202/2, 1248/1, 24th Main, Sector 2, HSR Layout.
