verything can be solved if the citizen is focused on all-round development. Uniting for a common cause was the reason behind setting up the Whatsapp group by Residents Watch last month. And what an experience it has been. For the first time, we have created a common platform for not just the residents welfare associations and resident activists but also apartment welfare associations. With over 50 members already, there have been some significant progress on ground and some immediate results as well. For more on that, read the ‘HSR News’ section of this magazine. If you are part of an apartment association or a proven activist of HSR, mail us and we will be happy to add you (info@residentswatch.in). Our Facebook group is just as thriving. While it’s a mix of commercial and civic issues, it’s still curated to ensure that only utility services that would be of use to the general public are allowed to post, like pest control, car care, maids, cooks and cab drivers on demand and so on. If you are still not part of it, join us (facebook.com/groups/bloreonfriday). We are looking out for residents to raise civic issues through emails, Facebook posts and photographs. If we like the pictures, we could even run them in this magazine with due credit. They could even be good-looking pictures of HSR landmarks, sights and sounds. Mail us now. The civic body polls may or may not happen this month. But if they do, please make sure you don’t waste your vote. My suggestion: vote for the best of the worst. Don’t think about who is ruling at the centre and state. Just vote for the right candidate. A person who understands you, who is honest, non-corrupt and hard working. NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS SET UP STP AT AGARA LAKE IN 6 MONTHS, AUTHORITIES TOLD
Last month, the High Court directed the authorities to set up a sewage treatment plant (STP) at Agara lake within six months. Allowing a public interest litigation filed by HSR Layout Section-7 Residents’ Welfare Association, a division bench of officiating Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice B V Nagarathna quashed the plan to drop the setting up of the STP by an order dated September 12, 2014, on the recommendation of Congress MLC V S Ugrappa. During the hearing, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board’s (KSPCB) counsel informed the court that there is no alternative but to set up an STP to save the lake. The petitioners told the court that the proposal on setting up the STP was dropped considering the recommendation of Ugrappa. They also claimed that residents were suffering from diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and malaria.

Citizen activism has received a shot in the proverbial arm, thanks to social media. The Facebook group of Residents Watch (facebook.com/bloreonfriday) crossed 1300 members recently. And we recently launched a Whatsapp Group of citizen activists for Residents Watch. With over 50 members already, which also include the members of apartment welfare associations and residents welfare associations, it’s a unique ‘by invitation only’ group that has already made its mark. Thanks to its members, many issues are being taken up by active residents and some were even solved almost immediately. Like the en masse parking of cabs on 17th Cross Road, the haphazard parking of buses in front of NPS school, and the leaking water pipe running into Agara Lake. Based on the proactive discussions in the group, the shifting of the bus from 24th Main to 27th Main near the power station is being taken up by the residents. A restaurant owner has come forward to adopt a park in front of him in Sector 3. Watch this space for more such updates every month.

ANIMAL ACTIVIST FEEDING STRAY CANINES BEATEN UP
A seemingly innocent act of feeding stray dogs went out of hand with a group of residents in HSR Layout allegedly assaulting a young lady HR professional with a private firm who is also a volunteer with an animal welfare organisation. The residents were apparently angry over the 23-year-old HR professional, Manisha Bhatotia, and her group of friends (all young women) feeding the dogs near Ujala Factory Layout in Hosapalya near HSR Layout. Manisha, who is also an animal activist, has been reportedly feeding stray canines in the area for the past three months but never before was she treated in such a violent manner, according to her. Incidentally, the residents too filed a counter-complaint with Madivala police alleging that Manisha had assaulted them.

Kindle your Multiple Intelligences What are Multiple Intelligences? Researchers believe that our ability to understand the world is complex. And some are better at understanding certain things than others. For example, a person who understands the solar system, might find it difficult to understand and use a musical instrument. And for a musician, understanding football might be tricky. These differences prompted Dr. Howard Gardner to develop the theory of Multiple Intelligences in 1983. He puts forward that the traditional idea of intelligence, based solely on IQ, is limited. Instead, he proposed eight different intelligences to account for the tremendous potential that both children and adults exhibit.

Gardner concluded that schools and society as a whole, tend to focus on two areas – linguistics and logical ability. The highly articulate and the highly logical are routinely honoured. But, what of those gifted in other areas? The artists, architects, musicians, naturalists, designers, dancers, therapists, entrepreneurs, and others who enrich the world in which we live. Unfortunately, many children with a creative bent of mind,
rarely receive reinforcement in schools. Too many, in fact, are labelled learning disabled, told they have attention deficit disorder, or are called underachievers. And with this aim of catering to intelligence in all its manifestations, the theory of multiple intelligences proposes a major transformation in which schools are run. It suggests that teachers be trained to present lessons in a wide variety of ways using music, cooperative learning, art activities, role play, multimedia, field trips, inner reflection, and much more. But is this approach available in India? Yes – and even in our very own Bangalore city (or Bengaluru, if you’re feeling politically correct). Wassup HSR? PIZZA DELIVERY BOY KILLED IN ACCIDENT
Last month, a 27-year-old pizza delivery boy was killed on the spot after he rammed his motorcycle into a moving tractor near Agara Lake on Sarjapur Road. The deceased has been identified as Manoj Singh, a resident of HSR Layout and a native of Manipur. He was working as a delivery boy with Dominos Pizza outlet at HSR Layout. The accident took place at around 12.30 a.m. when Manoj was heading towards home after finishing his shift. Upon reaching Sarjapur Road near Agara Lake, the deceased failed to spot a speed hump and jumped the bike over it following which he lost control over the bike and hit a tractor running ahead. Manoj Singh sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot. Passers-by who noticed Manoj Singh lying in an unconscious state immediately rushed him to St. John’s Hospital where he was declared as brought dead by the doctors. The Madivala Traffic police have registered a case and are investigating further.

Recently, a power disruption lasted an entire day at the HSR Layout. Residents in the locality made futile efforts to connect to the BSECOM helpline. Banni B, a resident says, “When contacting BESCOM failed, I spoke to a friend of mine working with BESCOM and got the number of the concerned Assistant Engineer. He informed me about the issue and gave me the exact time when the power would be restored.” Regarding the issue, N Jayanti, General Manager, customer relations (BESCOM), said, “Our lines have been busy as we are receiving several calls due to rain, preventive maintenance work by the KPTCL and BESCOM and tree cutting. We have 30 lines at our corporate office and have decided to add 15 more in about 3 to 4 months. I urge people to SMS their queries whenever they find the lines busy. They can send their SMS to 58888.”

SECTOR 2 ANNUAL MEETING HELD Plant the seed of inspiration in the teacher and watch the new generation bloom. To realise this, Honeywell, in partnership with the US Space & Rocket Centre, created the Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy Scholarship programme for middle school math and science teachers. Bhagyam Shekar Ram, vice-principal at National Public School, HSR Layout, was one of the teachers selected from India to attend the annual five-day event in June at the Space Academy for Educators, Huntsville, Alabama, USA. From across the world, 200 teachers participated in 45 hours of classroom, laboratory and training time, focused on science and space exploration. The program promotes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), with hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork and leadership. The teachers had their share of fun too, by way of exposure at Astronaut Simulators and a virtual tour into space to save the International Space Station. They also follow lesson plans based on NASA content and receive information to pass on to their students in class. “It’s a platform to inspire teachers who in turn inspire their students to reach for the stars,” Bhagyam Shekar said.

The 12th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of HSR Layout Sector 2 Residents Welfare Association was conducted on July 26, 2015 at the Cambridge Public School. A number of issues pertaining to infrastructure were discussed by the members who demanded a proactive stance from the civic agencies and elected representatives. A detailed account of activities and decisions taken on issues during the last year were presented by General Secretary Chandrashekar. This included a special meeting that was conducted with Joint Commissioner BBMP Bommanahalli, his engineers and then corporator Latha Murthy to discuss infrastructural issues on October 18, 2014. The association had also organised an environmental awareness and cleanliness campaign on November 8, 2014. It had also submitted a memorandum to DCP Rohini at the police meet conducted by the Federation of HSR Layout Residents Welfare Association. It had also escalated the gross negligence committed by BESCOM staff while cutting branches and trees. This prompted the Superintendent Engineer of BESCOM to warn the erring officials. ResidentsWATCH
Wassup HSR? CYCLE DAY IN 3 PLACES AT THE SAME TIME
Cycle Day was back again in HSR Layout last month. It was held in three places simultaneously: 18th Main, HSR Layout Sector 2; 8th Main West Road, Kalyan Nagar, HRBR Layout; Cubbon Park, in association with the horticulture department. HSR Cyclists Group was
the community partner for the event in HSR Layout. In all three places, it was from 6.30am to 11.30am. This eco-friendly event is an initiative of Bengaluru Coalition of Open Streets (BCOS), a non-profit collective comprising DULT, Praja RAAG, ESAF and individuals. Organisations like Bangalore police (traffic and law & order) and BBMP are supporting this regular event.

WATCH OUT, NO STRANGER OVER PHONE WILL GIVE YOU MONEY
Callers claiming to be from your own bank will befuddle you into believing every word they say. They scare you with an expiring account, policy or maybe they just want to confirm your last ATM withdrawal. Worried over losing money or because they already
seem to know so much, you will divulge your account details and before you know it, thousands would have slipped through your fingers. These phishing calls have been on the rise in the City. People are caught unawares and fall into cleverly laid traps. “They might call saying you have won a large amount of money and all you need to do now is give your account details so that the money can be deposited. Sometimes, they say you will have to pay nominal service charges of a couple of thousands to have lakhs of rupees transferred to your account. These couple of thousands may look small compared to the big price offered, but when ten more people fall for the same ruse, it adds up to a lot of money,” said B A Anil Koushik, Senior Branch Manager of Karnataka Bank, HSR Layout. Always terminate any call that requests for personal banking information, says Lakshmana K, Manager at State Bank of Mysore, HSR Layout branch. “If you have divulged any information to the caller, contact the bank immediately and block your cards and seize all online transaction until further notice. Run to the nearest ATM and check your account balance,” he said. An email id does not seem very threatening an information to give out. A harmless looking link or page will ask you to register with your email id and date of birth. With just the permutations and combinations of these two pieces of information, your email account is hacked. Studies say that most people use a combination of their names and birth dates as passwords, making it easier for a smart hacker. Once an e-mail account is hacked, it is easier for the fraudster to reset the password for your internet banking account. “When a customer wants to reset a password, the new one is sent to their registered email id. People need to be careful about what they reveal when they fill forms at malls,” said Lakshmana.

For several years, the residents of 17th B Main and the Sector 4 Residents Welfare Association have been complaining to various authorities regarding the errant NPS, the constant harassment, the rude behaviour by visitors of NPS and the use of abusive language by the drivers of NPS buses.

raffic issues and the National Public School (NPS) bus menace is not new to the residents of 17th B Main in HSR Layout. On July 7, when Rajkiran drove to 17th B Main along with my sister-in-law Rohini, 15-month-old Nikhil and 13-month-old Kanishk, the school buses were parked right in the middle of the road. Rohini walked all the way home carrying Kanishk in her arms, while Rajkiran got out of the car and asked the driver to back-up his bus and give space for his car to pass. The driver refused and abused Rajkiran who was carrying Nikhil in his arms. When Rajkiran questioned the driver, all the bus drivers ganged up to beat him. My brother and I, who were in the house, rushed to the spot. While my brother covered Rajkiran and Nikhil, I pulled the drivers away, and they misbehaved with me as well. I called the police immediately and took the drivers to the police station. When I was writing the complaint, a phone call was made, asking the police to release the drivers. The police asked me to come back later and file the complaint. Initially, they were hesitant to file the case. I had to write to the Chief Minister’s Office and the police commissioner about the issue and only then was allowed to file the complaint. After the incident, the school buses are following lane discipline and the staff members are parking their vehicles inside NPS. If the NPS management had any respect for the neighbourhood, they could have corrected themselves a long time ago. The four-year-old CSR funding arrangement is ending in a few months, with the sponsor reducing the funding by half effective immediately. While efforts are underway to identify alternate CSR funds, the immediate funding needs prompted the lake’s community custodians to look to individuals and resident welfare associations for donations. Open your heart and purse and fund this water body that is truly paradise on earth. With the chirping birds, the serene water body and the extensive tree growth in an urban sprawl, the Kaikondrahalli Lake is an island of serenity in a sea of chaos. It is our job to save it not only for us but also for our future generation. The lake is being maintained by the Mahadevpura Parisara Samrakshane Mattu Abhivrudhi Samiti (MAPSAS), a non-profit trust that manages several lakes in Bellandur. According to the trustees, the maintenance of the lake costs around Rs 18 lakhs every year, or an average of Rs 1.5 lakh a month. This is to pay bills like covering the salaries of gardeners, security guards, diesel to pump water to plant/ trees during the non-monsoon months, de-weeding the lake and keeping the toilets clean, among other things. The cost would have been a lot higher if not for the non-monetary contributions from well-wishers and experts. August 2015|13

BAs with a passion for food. That about sums up Rohini (32) and Chethan Reddy (31). Naturally, their career gravitated towards the culinary. Three years ago, they gave birth to Mishmash, a casual dining restaurant in Sector 1 that serves a bit of everything. And now, they have started a fine dining restaurant in Sector 4 called Samaikya (which means, ‘Equal & United’ in Sanskrit). And it is indeed Telugu cuisine at its united best. The state of Andhra is split but Samaikya is uniting all the food from the three regions that make up Telugu cuisine

— Andhra, Telangana and Rayalseema. “A short stint at big corporates made us realise that we wanted more in life, other than a 9-5 job,” says Rohini, who takes care of accounting and restaurant supervision while husband Chethan oversees customer relations. Why Samaikya? “It’s part of our growth cycle,” says Rohini. “We decided it is time to diversify into other cuisines. What better way to diversify into, other than the cuisine closest to our heart, Telugu cuisine. We realised not many restaurants in Bengaluru served authentic Telugu food. Many selfclaimed authentic Andhra restaurants have got very few recipes right. We wanted
to bring to the customer, what we have grown up eating. A homely experience in a premium ambience was our goal.” Samaikya brings to you delicious homely food in a traditional ambience. From the well-appointed, ikkat-clad seating, the Tholu Bommalu (shadow puppets) suspended from the ceiling and the Kondapalli toys, the promoters have not only encouraged local artisans but also represented all the three regions through their art forms. Public park used as playground by Lawrence School Residents want it restored fully as a park

The Sector 6 residents are opposed to this because Lawrence School is using it as a playground and parking spot. They would rather have the entire lung space turned into a children’s park to avoid such misuse. Since the latest court verdict is clearly in favour of it, the BBMP should do its job and convert it as one.

he BDA had initially earmarked the park next to Lawrence School in Sector 6 as a playground. Later revisions point it out as a children’s park, according to the BBMP reply given to an RTI query by Sector 6 Residents Welfare Association (RWA). To restore it as a park, the residents spearheaded by Ramesh Chandra and B Kodandarama Gowda (joint secretary, Sector 6 RWA & vice chairman, Federation of HSR Residents Welfare Association) got the forest department to plant over 50 saplings in the area being used as a playground. This prompted BNR Reddy, Chairman, Federation of HSR Residents Welfare Association, to have the saplings removed by the BBMP engineers and replant them nearby so as not to obstruct the children from playing. “Last year, we had decided to turn half the park into a playground,” Reddy told Residents Watch. “The saplings were removed without the approval of the BBMP joint commissioner,” said Gowda, post incident. “BBMP Administrator Vijay Bhaskar ordered that the present status be maintained following which the saplings were planted back in the same spot by the BBMP.” Ramesh Chandra said the residents of Sector 6 have been fighting for a full-fledged park for several years. “So far, there have been three court judgements (2010, 2011, 2014),” he told Residents Watch. “The 2014 court verdict clearly tells the BBMP to make it into a children’s park. Lawrence School is using it as a playground for its students and parking zone for its buses. BBMP has even given a separate gate for the school.” Sector 6 has four parks in all, including this one. The park is crying out for BBMP’s intervention. They not only need to restore it as a children’s park but also make budgetary provisions for its upkeep. ResidentsWATCH

he Agara Lake sewage treatment plant (STP) proposal is going back and forth. When residents and the local press were opposed to it, the state government put a halt to the STP. But with Sector 7 Residents Welfare Association filing a PIL and winning the case, the STP is back with Agara Lake. But the biggest flaw in the PIL was that they did not take the people fighting for the lake conservation into confidence. The result: Those fighting for the lake’s survival are not in favour of the STP, and are planning on filing a fresh PIL to stop the installation. The lake activists are opposed to it because Agara Lake does not need an STP. “Agara Lake has a good catchment area and many alternate sources of water that can keep the lake full all through the year,” says Kavitha Reddy, the principal campaigner. “We proved this to the Chief Secretary of Karnataka and even submitted a ground report, prompting the government to cancel the STP. A recent survey commissioned by Lake Development Authority for the revival of the lake also endorses our point that Agara Lake does not need an STP.” The activists contend that the STP would be a waste of public money. “If every small lake like Agara in Bangalore starts demanding Rs 35 crores for STP and Rs 18 crores for revival and lakhs of rupees every month for operations and maintenance, isn’t it a waste of public money? Also note that 40 acres on the other side of the lake (Bellandur Lake area) was allocated to the BWSSB for a large STP. But that land was then given to an SEZ and the BWSSB is now forcing that STP on Agara Lake.” ResidentsWATCH
