Your voter ID details online

The Bangalore Political Action Committee (B.PAC) has built a voter-friendly site based on a series of inputs from the residents. Residents Watch took it for a test drive and found it really helpful because of its intuitive navigation interface. You can check out your voter ID details here: http://bpac.in/voter-search/. Similarly, B.PAC has a mobile app called Spotter where you can report about things that the other apps don't allow, like illegal hoardings, footpath encroachments, tree cuttings and animal control. There are only a few residents who have reported from Bommanahalli ward, perhaps due to lack of knowledge. So go ahead and try out this app and let us know if it works. Email us (residentswatchmag@gmail.com) the details with screenshots and pictures of before and after.

Sector 4 resident Chandrashekar had a scary tale of his neighbour to share recently. "A stranger, looking to be mentally retarded, troubled my neighbour for two days," he said. "The unidentified man would get inside his building and bang on the door or ring the bell several times asking for his wife and his clothes. Even after shouting at him and telling him that he is in the wrong house, the stranger would wait for an hour or two outside and repeat the same thing again. He did this the whole day. My neighbour had to call the police and they took him to the station and dropped him in a different locality after a warning. But he came back the next day and repeated it. This time around, he called me and I called the cops who took him to the station."

Garbage set on fire A resident noticed garbage in front of Freedom International School in Sector 4 being set on fire. BBMP was cleaning the area to use it as a secondary collection point, but the residents want to know if the culprit was the civic agency itself. Or the garbage contractors? "It's clearly a planned one as the fire is set only where the garbage is piled up," said one resident. If the fence begins to eat the crop, who can protect it? And in this case, the civic agency is allegedly violating its own rule. And this is not a case in isolation. With city’s rising pollution levels, it’s time the government took action on polluters.

Airtel erects poles on footpaths

Residents oppose liquor shop

“How can they erect poles in public places to keep their junction boxes?" asks resident Subbuswamy. And apparently, over 160 such poles have already been erected in HSR. Imagine every telecom provider and fibre optic company erecting poles on the footpath in the future? It's time the BBMP and the state government wakes up to this civic nonsense. To add to it is the BBMP. 1st A Main Road in Sector 6 is fully tarred and 7th Cross Road in Sector 1 was asphalted for the second time in less than three months, whereas many other roads have not been asphalted for the last ten years. Not to mention, the many potholes in areas like Sector 2, 3 and 7 that are left unattended. Adds Subbuswamy: "Only good roads are being re-asphalted for obvious reasons. But mercilessly agencies like Airtel, are damaging the roads.

Honeypot, a new liquor shop that has opened its doors on 18th C Main in Sector 3 is irking residents like Gopal Maiya. "Wonder how the excise department flouted the rule of not permitting a liquor store within 100 metres of schools, temples and houses. It's a purely residential area, but now it has become a haven for drunks on weekends. One such boozer had made my building's setback area as a rendezvous point for smoking, boozing and snacking. I had to install a gate to stop it." Will the BBMP shutter the liquor store and bring some peace to the neighbourhood, please? Similarly, Madhuloka, another liquor store has come up on 17th Cross in Sector 4. It's a violation as it's close to temples, schools and residential homes and clearly a violation. When the BBMP Joint Commissioner Veerabhadraswamy and MLA Satish Reddy act on these widespread violations?

Footpath encroachments should go "Even god cannot save HSR Layout as all the footpaths in all the main roads are encroached by the commercial complexes, forcing people to walk on the main roads," says Sector 7 resident BNR Reddy. "Time and again, it has been brought to the notice of BBMP, corporator and others. They are not bothered about the complaints. This clearly shows that the BBMP engineers and the corporator are encouraging such violations. It is high time they wake up."

Save this tree!

Doodle away

Sector 4 resident Geetha VM is pained to tell us that two trees outside newly-built shops on 17th Cross are going to die "as they are concreted around without giving breathing space for the roots". Will the forest ministry and the horticulture department of the BBMP take action, please?

World of Titan & Fastrack Showroom on 27th Main in Sector 1 celebrated children's day in style. They played host to a drawing and colouring competition for the kids of HSR Layout without any fee. The theme was Little Pixels - Vision for Digital India. Bharti Anand of Vibgyor High judged the event and picked six winners. Participation certificates and Zoop geometric boxes were given to all participants. Home-made refreshments made it a healthy affair too. We congratulate the winners: Jairen (5 years), Dhriti (5), Aakarsh (8), Jeremy (9), Yeshas Anup (10) and Jojishnu (10).

Food vendor nuisance

Encroachments galore

Resident Santosh Srinivas requested the BBMP to check the food vendor nuisance near the BMTC yard in Sector 4 way back in September, but nothing has been done so far. "There are a few food vendors who dump the garbage and waste directly into the drains and clog them," he says. We request health inspector Vinod to take immediate action on them. Of late, Vinod has been proactive on this front and has fined bakeries allowing for smoking in a public area in addition to littering the place and using plastic bags in Sector 3. Kudos to him for that.

Footpaths encroached and buildings built in blatant violations are mushrooming in HSR Layout. With the vacancy of BBMP Assistant Executive Engineer falling vacant after Venkatesh was sacked, there is no one to complain to as in-charge engineer Murlidhar and BBMP Joint Commissioner express their helplessness. So it's about time, the residents took the help of the Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force. You could call Superintendent of Police on these numbers: 080-22975587, 080-22975589. Best of luck.

Scene Around The Vicinity Thursdays at Silbatti is movie time. A nice way to bring in the crowds and make them have fun. 8am onwards

This garbage dark spot on 24th Main was highlighted by resident RS Murthy and soon enough, garbage supervisor Anil Reddy got on the job and cleared it. This space had not been cleared for the longest time. The Swachch Man is doing a commendable job.

This drain at the end of 24th Main Road towards Somasundrapalya is yet to be desilted by the BWSSB. When it rains rhinos, the water floods the road and this leads to the creation of potholes.

More Than A Thousand Words

Potholes are filled like these. Rapid and without following any standard procedure. The result? Some vehicle usage and perhaps a mild shower and the crater is bigger than it was before. When will the state government rein in the BBMP and make them accountable?

The Devaraj Urs Mobile Library has a pitstop near Bank of Baroda on 24th Main in Sector 1 every Friday from 11.15am to 12pm. For more details, call John Celestine at 99807-53284.

Commercial building owners like this Rice Traders building on 19th Main in Sector 2 is letting out rain water on to the road instead of the storm water drain. Not only does this flood the road but also result in potholes. When will the engineers and landlords see some sense in this nonsensical way of doing things. Think holistic, guys!

A Nandini milk booth has come up on the footpath of 24th Main Road in Sector 2. A blatant violation that has been flagged by the residents. The BBMP is yet to remove this encroachment. A similar booth has come up on the median park on 18th Cross near McDonald's in Sector 3. That is also illegal. So is the Cooljoint building.

HSR impacted by demo & GST

Most retailers suffer losses, some have shutdown By ZAHID H JAVALI

Most businesspersons in HSR Layout have blamed demonetisation and GST for their losses in the last one year. Some say their turnover came down drastically for the first few months after demonetisation. The others contend that their profitability has suffered, and forecast that it may take another year or two for things to stabilise. The residents are unhappy with GST because the prices went up even before GST and went up even further after the legislation came into effect.

[ [ HOPE FLOATS Both Demo and GST have impacted businesses like no other. That's the general cry from businessmen in HSR. But some say GST might benefit in the long run.

December 2017

'BUSINESS IS DOWN BY 60%' "The compliance is too much," says Kavitha Reddy who runs an outdoor sports firm. "I used to go to the auditor only once a year, but now GST filing is mandatory every month. It's hell and the cost has gone up." What about demonetisation? "GST killed the ease of doing business and demo killed the volumes, bringing down my revenues by 60%. People are not spending like before." 'NET MARGINS DOWN BY 9%' John Thomas, the manufacturer of Herbal Strategi range of insect repellants, floor cleaners and pet-care products is hit by the double whammy of GST and demo. "Cash sales from supermarkets were hit during demo and distributors refused to take fresh stocks during GST implementation. We lost three months of primary sales. We are particularly affected by GST as tax rates have gone up and our net margins are down by 9%," he says. "Much of our business operates on cash, just like other manufacturers, so we have stopped advertising for now.

We were paying 5% earlier, but now under GST, it's 18%. Post GST, the MRP of our products is up," he says. "The sales are not affected though our profitability is slightly down. I am just hoping that GST will be good in the long run." 'BUSINESSES HAVE SHUT DOWN' S Imran is unaffected by demo and GST, as his customers are overseas. "But I know people in HSR whose businesses have folded up, like furniture stores who were not able to pay the rent and shut down," he says. "Other businesses have recorded fewer sales. Under this mad government, saving expenses = earning."

are re-pricing the products by a markdown of approximately 7%. Suraj does admit that footfalls are down by 12-15% but he continues to engage with his customers and shore up his revenues through initiatives like organising drawing competitions, celebrating store anniversaries and so on. No wonder, 48% of his customers are repeats.

'WILL BENEFIT IN THE LONG RUN' SM Thamar who runs a garment factory is suffering from a 40% downturn in business. "About 30-40% people have stopped or postponed their garment purchase," he says. "Demonetisation is a good idea that was badly 'VOLUMES HAVE COME DOWN' implemented. Salt World treats symptoms related to breathing and skin disorders

December 2017

During World War 2, soldiers used to hide inside natural salt caves to relax and heal their breathing disorders. Way back in 1843, a Polish scientist found that salt mine workers never suffered from any breathing ailments. And this led to the first man-made salt cave in Russia in 1989. And later in UK in 2008. And now, it's in HSR Layout. Healthy people can boost their immunity by staying in this regulated salt room for an hour. The more sessions you take, the better it is. For people with severe breathing disorders, 30 sessions are advisable. "Anyone above the age of six months can use it," says Deepthi Babu, the Co-founder of Salt World in Sector 3. "It is not recommended for the person who is constantly on oxygen and not fit enough to walk even a few metres, unless their specialist doctor still recommends it." There is clinical evidence to this. A 2006 study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that salt therapy improved lung function among people with cystic fibrosis. Another study the same year by the European Respiratory Journal found that inhaling aerosolised salt temporarily improved smoking-related symptoms such as coughing and mucus production among smokers. The patients that Residents Watch spoke to said they were experiencing less shortness of breath, reduced coughing and decreased sinus pressure because of their continued use of Salt World. For more clinical studies, visit: https://tinyurl.com/saltroom.

This study by National Health Services (NHS) in the UK with Salt Cave, a wellness centre, is testimony enough. According to their survey of 42,000 individuals, nine out of ten clients voted for the efficacy of salt therapy. But why salt? Because it is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, removes allergy-causing organisms, boosts general immunity and loosens excessive mucus and clears nasal congestion. "Our salt rooms are coated with pure sea salt that mimics the natural salt cave," explains Deepthi. "The heart of the whole treatment is a device called Halogenerator which is imported from UK. This device is accredited by the National Healthcare Services (NHS), UK. This machine grinds the salt into microscopic particles and disperses it into the salt room. The people resting in our salt rooms will inhale pharmaceutical grade salt particles that will go into their respiratory tract and cleanse the whole system by removing pathogens, smoke residues and pollutants." Bangalore being the allergy capital is just the perfect city for a salt room. And with pollution rising by the day, this drug-less holistic treatment with zero side effects is the best bet, according to the Salt World promoter. Salt therapy works for both adults and children above the age of six months. "Athletes and vocal intensive professionals like singers and musicians can benefit from salt therapy," says Deepthi. "Salt therapy improves their endurance and stamina." Says 10-year-old Swetha: "I have had the Nasal Polyps issue since my childhood. After my 8th session, nasal blockages reduced and I could breathe better." She is not alone. Says 65-year-old Ram Mohan: "I have been suffering from COPD for the last six years. Before

starting the therapy, I was feeling heaviness in my lungs even when I walked a little. After my 7th session though, I could see a considerable amount of improvement in my breathing pattern." Deepthi's husband benefitted too. "Rajesh had a very bad cold and a minor skin issue," she says. "After taking a couple of sessions, he got completely relieved from them. And I have personally seen a considerable amount of stress relief after being in the sessions." According to Deepthi, salt therapy is best to relieve symptoms of people suffering from Asthma, COPD, Sinusitis, Bronchiectasis, Rhinitis and Hay fever, cold /flu, tonsillitis, Cystic fibrosis, allergies, Smokers cough, ear infection and psoriasis. What's more, it can help healthy people in much the same way. "It controls sneezing, coughing, snoring and shortness of breath," says Deepthi. "It makes you breathe easy after just a few sessions. It reduces and/or eliminates the necessity of antibiotics and inhalers. It enhances lung function, reduces mucus and clears the sticky phlegm from the lungs, relieves stress, strengthens immunity and improves your quality of life." Step inside the salt rooms in comfortable clothing, wearing their hair and foot covers. You could just doze off in the lounge chairs, listen to music, watch your kids play, read a book, play a board game or watch TV. There is a separate kids room where they can play games, puzzles, build salt dunes, read, or watch TV. Salt World will soon have branches in other parts of Bangalore too. So what are you waiting for? Step right in to breathe easy. It's your breathing wellness spa. (Names of patients changed to protect identity) RESIDENTSWATCH.IN

100 CCTV cameras Residents install CCTVs on their own for HSR residents

To catch thieves on 21st B Main in Sector 1 By SAFIYA SAYEED Prompted by several thefts in their vicinity, 18 residents of 21st B Main in Sector 1 pooled in to setup a CCTV surveillance system. And already, it is showing some results. Last month, one of their eight cameras caught a thief entering two houses and stealing shoes kept inside their compounds. The footage was promptly given to the cops for further investigation. The residents were propelled to action when thefts occurred early this year. "In April 2017, a house on our road was robbed between 2am and 8am," says resident Syed Imran. "1 kg gold was stolen. The owners were out of town. The compound gate was locked from outside. Neighbours watched the house till 1am. The main door, back door and terrace door had grill work. The thieves made no noise even while breaking open the grill door. The house was ransacked. The police came with a sniffer dog, took photos and fingerprints. They asked for CCTV camera footage, but there was none." In May 2017, Sukino Healthcare on 22nd Main was the next victim of robbery. "At 10:30pm, the robbers came dressed as executives. They by-passed the lock / grill and walked out with all the laptops from that office. The neighbour saw the robbers, but he thought they worked for that company. No CCTV camera footage here too, so the case reached a dead end again." Syed spearheaded the CCTV campaign. "After a series of thefts in our neighbourhood, we realised that the presence of CCTVs could have helped the police nail the culprits," he says. "So I met neighbours one by one, collected Rs 4,500 from each of them and then got the CCTV camera network in place for our street." 26

Syed took quotations for CCTVs from four vendors and the residents eventually finalised someone who excelled at price, quality and quicker after-sales service. After a proper recce of the place, the residents chose the right location for the high-end cameras that can see in the dark and also be hard to spot. "We had to convince the contributing homeowners that the camera will not focus on the entrance to their house and instead face the road and record the movement of people and vehicles," said Syed. The residents are monitoring the movement of vehicles and people round-the-clock on their smartphones. "Our system is part of community policing program of Bangalore Police," says Syed.

SPIRITUALITY

HEAL 100 CCTVyour camerasLIFE for HSR residents

Take part in the free weekly 'HU' meditation sessions in HSR By ZAHID H JAVALI

A bunch of HSR residents headed by Bharathi S, a resident of Sector 7, are doing their bit to usher in peace in No, they are not propagating Bytheir OURneighbourhoods. FEATURE WRITER any particular religion, cult or regime. They are just telling everyone to chant 'HU' (pronounced 'Hue') whenever they feel stressed, unwell or just want some peace of mind. Not just that, they also meet up every Saturday between 4.30pm and 6pm to engage in group meditations and a question and answer session with one of their mentors - Anand, Nandini or Rajesh. Both Anand and Nandini have met the current spiritual leader of HU, Harold Klemp (see picture above), who is based in the US. Klemp says, "HU is woven into the language of life. It is the sound of all sounds. It is the wind in the leaves, falling rain, thunder of jets, singing of birds, the awful rumble of a tornado. Its sound is heard in laughter, weeping, the din of city traffic, ocean waves and the quiet rippling of a mountain stream. And yet, the word HU is not God. It is a word people anywhere can use to address the Originator of Life." According to Klemp, the soul's ultimate purpose is to find divine love and HU can make that happen. “Just chant HU for 5-20 minutes every day and you will not only heal yourself but also clear any negativity that is within you or surrounds you,” says Anand. “Just practicing for a few days will give you results.” Don't believe him? Just try out this simple spiritual exercise and you will agree with us. Once you are comfortably seated or lying down, shut your eyes and take some long breaths. When your inner voice says you are ready, start singing HU and feel love. The more you say it, the more relaxed and blessed you will feel. You may hear a bell ringing in

the distance or the sound of a gurgling stream or just see white light. Remember, every human's ultimate aim is to be at peace because happiness is an elevated state of mind. And HU helps you attain peace. At the weekly meet-ups, the HSR residents chant HU for 20 minutes and then open a book of fables authored by Klemp and try to uncover the hidden truth of life. The Q&A session is just as soothing as the chant itself. The residents have a Whatsapp Group. If you want to be part of this group, contact Bharathi at the numbers given below. For more details on this spiritual movement, visit: www.eckankar.org. HU Meditation Centre No 874, 22nd Cross, 6th Main, Sector 7, HSR Layout Phone: 93428-29608, 98860-43801, 080-25723380

EDITORSPEAK Singing HU is not tied to any religion, which is the beauty of this meditative technique. You can do it at home and you can join this HSR group and do it as a team. It's time to heal yourself. RESIDENTSWATCH.IN

CCTV cameras in HSR are a farce 100 CCTV cameras

A resident visits the control room and comes away disappointed

for HSR residents

By RS MURTHY

Two months ago, the residents of HSR Layout were pleased when MLA Satish Reddy announced 100 CCTVs for HSR Layout. Months later, his party spokesperson clarified 100 was for the entire Bommanahalli By OUR that FEATURE WRITER constituency and 20 were sanctioned for HSR Layout - 10 installed and 10 more to be done shortly. Last month, I decided to check the efficacy of this setup by visiting several places where they were installed, including the HSR Police Station's control room to understand how the surveillance works. The visit was prompted by two concerns. Are the CCTVs serving the purpose? Is the data from the installed CCTVs analysed and available on the public domain? At the HSR police station, I met Inspector Nagaraj. He had a monitoring screen in his room. However, six of the CCTVs were not functioning that day due to some technical glitch. He asked his senior constable to take me to the control room so I could see the action by myself. The first thing that hit me were the locations. I saw two CCTVs near Airtel Office on 24th Main Road, two near Bank of Baroda on 24th Main Road, two near NIFT on 27th Main Road and four on Mangammanapalya Main Road. The constable had no idea how the locations were picked. I am not sure if all the seven Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs) were consulted for this. The constable could not give me any details on their usability, and if any standard guidelines governed the setup and whether these are linked to the main Police Control room and if this data is shared on public domain. Regarding the efficacy of the CCTVs, the constable mentioned that except for a scuffle captured on one of the Mangammanapalya CCTVs, the cops had noticed nothing significant since their installation. So much hype

and nothing to show for it. The constable also mentioned that the traffic police have their own CCTV system. In all fairness, they should be integrated and the information shared with other civic agencies like BBMP on encroachment of footpaths and so on. Ideally, the CCTVs should have been installed with the guidelines provided by the vendor in consultation with the RWAs and the general public. This set-up appears to be mere lip service by the powers-that-be. What is the contribution of the ward corporator to this important surveillance system? RS Murthy is a resident of Sector 2 and the former president of the Sector 2 Residents Welfare Association

[ [ EDITORSPEAK No CCTV is installed on the BDA flyover known for the nail mafia. Random spots are chosen with no results to show. Clearly, the CCTV positioning is a sham.

Physio to your rescue

Pooja's Posture Clinic kneads you back to health By OUR CORRESPONDENT "Exercise is as important as breathing and I believe in treating the cause, not just the symptom," says physiotherapist Dr Pooja Rai. She is an exercise bible and a posture expert. With good reason. Her Posture Clinic in Sector 3 is the result of her graduation from KLES Institute of Physiotherapy and studying Stott Pilates from Toronto, Canada. And right now, she is neck-deep into pursuing her post graduate certification from the American Posture Institute to be the 'first certified posture expert in India'. During her practise, Dr Pooja understood that traditional correction of posture wasn’t enough to completely relieve the pain suffered through prolonged bad posture. Which is why she started merging Pilates into her clinical practice. The aim is to help her patients understand the importance of exercise in life. Being an IT hub, Bangalore has its fair share of people who walk with stooped and rounded shoulders, forward neck, headaches, muscle injuries, tremendous neck stiffness, lower back aches and other pains related to posture. The other problems that Pooja has treated include Kyphosis (hunched back), Scoliosis, neuropathy, arthritis, Parkinsonism and obesity, among others. Pooja heals you through physiotherapy, posture correction through exercises, pregnancy program using pilates, weight-loss program through the Posture Clinic Diet and injury prevention by providing you with control measures that are simple and effective to implement. "Good posture is the correct alignment of body parts supported by the right amount of muscle tension against gravity," she says. "And the best part is that all of this is 34

done without any chemicals. It's just exercise, exercise and more exercise." Patient testimonials cement her credentials. Says Arijit Bhattacharjee: "Dr Pooja is probably the coolest doctor in town. I found her to be extremely punctual and brilliant at her work. I have been absolutely cured of a major back pain in flat five days." Tripti Nair has been a patient of her's for more than a year. "When she started seeing me, I had a number of health issues, including neck and shoulder pain, because of my job that requires me to sit long hours.” Pooja’s efforts paid off. “After my workouts with her, I have lost significant weight and feel much stronger and fitter. Her classes are very engaging and designed to get the most of our workouts. She is able to provide results even for people who have tried several other things and failed."
