WANTED Proactive residents
W
ater conservation should be all the year round and not just restricted to the summer. I know of some apartments coming out with rules on the number of car washes per month during the summer. I think, the practice of car and portico washes should end permanently. When you can use a wet cloth and wipe them clean, why wash them? This has two fallouts. The running water from the tap is prone to being wasted while washing the car. Second, the road gets damaged due to the water collecting on it for a long time. With the standard of road repairs not up to the mark (no umbrella shape to drain the water easily), craters are most likely to develop. Therefore, I request all the residents to stop this practice immediately for their own good. Every time, a new house comes up, the road is cut to make way for Cauvery water. While you do pay the money to the BBMP to fix it, they never do. And this is something the BBMP needs to be pulled up for. But in the meantime, I would request the residents to fill the gap in the road with stones and jelly to smoothen the traffic flow. It will help them first and then the others. If you spot these kinds of cases in your neighbourhood, you can call up the house owner or speak to the supervisor who is building it, to do the deed. I am sure, they will not mind. In fact, they should thank you for the timely advice. You don’t have to always stand with the protestors, raise your voice and write to the authorities. You can do one thing now and it’s super easy. Keep your surroundings clean. Don’t allow any illegal activity around your house. Without the neighbour’s approval, no one can do anything illegal. The power is always with you. The constitution gives it to all Indian citizens. Make the most of it. Until next month, be proactive, be responsible. ‘Like’ us on Facebook to stay updated on HSR Layout: https://www.facebook.com/ResidentsWatch

NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS MAKING FESTIVALS ECO-FRIENDLY
No POP (Plaster of Paris), only clay Ganeshas as POP is banned by the pollution control board. However, community festivals still resorted to POP, but most areas like HSR Layout were largely free from POP. Thanks to resident activism by Smita K, Dr Shanthi, Kamesh R, Lalitha and their team who supported BBMP’s initiatives for a clean Ganesha festival. What’s more, Prakash, an electrical engineer, not only made but also sold over 200 clay Ganeshas inside BDA Complex. Several clay-Ganesha making workshops
were also held in HSR to further the green cause by members of HSR Citizen Forum. “The idols made at the workshops were sold in HSR, so that people didn’t have to go to Jayanagar and Madiwala to look for them,” says Dr Shanthi. “We hoped that this easy availability will change many people to prefer clay over POP. There was a lot of improvement from last year. BBMP arranged mobile collection points, and we observed that many people had shifted to clay. Now the only major problem was with community Ganeshas… they were all POP.”
WASTE MANAGEMENT DURING BAKRID
In addition to festival waste management announcements by mosques in HSR Layout and MG Palya, there was actual work happening on ground. BBMP health officials with the support of HSR Citizen Forum collected the Bakrid waste separately and composted them. “I’m very happy that BBMP’s interest and volunteers’ efforts yielded fruitful results in festival waste management,” says Dr Shanthi T. We congratulate the entire team of joint commissioners Sarfaraz Khan and Muniraju, including the health inspectors, supervisors, auto drivers and helpers.
CLOTH DIAPERS AND MENSTRUAL CUPS INSTEAD OF SANITARY NAPKINS
Dr Shanthi reports that the sanitary waste collection is now streamlined in HSR Layout. Says she: “Using the data we have, we are now going to ask people to reduce the use of sanitary waste by opting for sustainable options like cloth diapers and menstrual cups instead of sanitary napkins, which will help the environment and also help them as these are free from chemicals.”

Wassup HSR? WASTE SHREDDER DEMO
Recently, there was a demo of dry and wet waste shredders at Bengaluru One Park on 24th Main in Sector 1. All the residents and Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) attended it. Some came with a full bag of dry leaves. Others got wet waste to make the most of the wet waste shredder. There was also a branch shredder too. These would be used extensively at the dry waste collection centre adjacent to this park.
NEIGHBOURS BEWARE
Sector 3 residents have witnessed a number of thefts involving shoes, taps and even flower pots left outside their homes. 15th C Main witnessed this the most last month. The Sector 3 RWA members have now asked the residents to install grills around their houses. They have also suggested that they get to know their neighbours and watch each other’s back. In addition, install CCTV cameras and become a member of the RWA. Be part of their Whatsapp Group that acts like a Control Room for residents to air their grievances. This holds true for all neighbourhoods. Do your bit and the world will do its bit for you.
FIX THE DRAINS OR ELSE?
The rainy season is almost over but the residents on 25th Cross and 17th A Main in Sector 3 are still concerned. Whenever it rains rhinos, the residents have suffered in the last eight years. They have now asked the BBMP to divert the Somasundrapalya Lake water to 19th Main to prevent the flow into 25th Cross and 17th A Main. If the BBMP doesn’t intend to keep up its promise, the residents are all set to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to safeguard
MLA’S HELPING HAND
When one resident highlighted that his activism against thieves in HSR has had one unfortunate fallout, MLA Satish Reddy attended to the problem. “He took a personal interest in talking to the HSR Layout police in getting my licensed gun back,” says Sector 4 resident Fazal Khalil. He fought off thieves at midnight to save his neighbour’s house from getting robbed a while ago. “He personally called me up just to convey that he spoke to the inspector.”
PERSISTENT REQUEST
One road that refuses to get tarred by BBMP despite repeated requests happens to be 3rd Main, 17th Cross in Sector 7, says resident Murali. “This road is behind Allahabad bank. It has not received a black topping for over eight years now,” he says. Similarly, the short stretch between Fish n Fries and Pulla Reddy Sweets on 22nd Cross in Sector 2 requires an efficient filling of the potholes. “They are very badly damaged and deteriorating,” complains resident Manisha.

Wassup HSR? TREEATHON GREENS HSR
Recently, Team HaSiRu Mithra planted 64 trees as part of their ‘TREEathon’ campaign. “It was a fantastic atmosphere, thanks to Brig (retd) Murthy who is always there for a good cause and his Sector 2 RWA team that is always there to make HSR better,” says event organiser Kavitha Reddy. “Much thanks to Vasudev Reddy for sending a load of mud for plants.” The best part of this? HaSiRu Mithra and the efforts of its citizens were mentioned with the World Environment Day celebration coverage in the Bangalore press.
BEWARE OF FRAUDS
Residents Watch received this real-life trend from the Community Policing group of Bangalore. Please be aware of this and circulate the news to all the people you know. A lady’s handbag which contained her cell phone, credit card and purse was stolen. Thirty minutes later, she managed to call her husband from her friend’s phone, and told him what happened. Her husband said, “I just received your text message asking me to remind you of your ATM pin to which I replied a little while ago.” When they rushed to the bank, the staff informed them that the money had already been withdrawn. The thief had used the stolen cell phone to text her husband and get hold of her PIN. Within twenty minutes, the thief had withdrawn her money from the bank account. The next time around, when sensitive information is being asked through an SMS, please confirm by calling back the person who asked for it. Similarly, when someone texts you to meet you somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them.
FLOODING HSR
Recently, when it rained rhinos, The Outer Ring Road’s major storm water drain (rajakaluve) was seen flowing to full capacity. And the Nagarjuna apartment area off 19th Main in Sector 2 was fully flooded. “The cars can barely pass,” reported Somrup Pal. “All the apartments on this bylane had no power.” Lalithamba has a good solution to the flooding problem: “The only way is to develop all the lakes and increase the water holding capacity in them. Hope all the lakes around HSR are developed.”

CLUELESS BDA
Recently, the residents barely managed to save a park near RR Residency in Somasundrapalya. “The BDA guys would have dug it up, looking for a storm water drain and exit the SS Palya Lake water,” informs resident Kavitha Reddy. “No one at BBMP or BDA knew where the excess water from the lake was going. They wanted to dig up the park and exit the water towards Nagarjuna Greenridge apartments.” The JCB was hired by the locals whose houses were flooded. They wanted to clear the drain, so every thing fell in place at once.” Adds fellow resident Lalithamba: “Since we had a basic understanding of the lake structure, we were able to save lakhs of rupees going down the drain. It was a great learning for us. Thanks to RR Residency’s Suresh who alerted us about the issue. It was luck that we were in the right place at the right time.”
NO STREETLIGHTS, MORE CRIME
The same area is in the news for another reason. Resident Venkat reports that this bylane suffers from dysfunctional street lights. “Due to this, notorious activities are being noticed during late nights and reported by the residents to the HSR police,” he says. “To avoid this, we request the street lights to be rectified.”
FOOTPATH ENCROACHMENTS CONTINUE
Resident Lakshmi Srivatsan has a major grouse. On the ever-growing 27th Main, newer shops are opening up and clogging the footpaths. “They are putting up huge display boards on the footpath meant for walking,” she says. We ask the BBMP and the traffic police to continue their footpath eviction drive and give back the pavement to the pedestrians.

RWA RECOGNISES CITIZEN EFFORTS The other day, the Sector 1 RWA hosted a dinner for the volunteers of HSR Citizen Forum for helping with the streamlining of waste segregation in their sector. Says the forum’s Smita Kulkarni: “We appreciate the enthusiasm and leadership of the RWA who made auto announcements, organised multiple full day door-2-door awareness drives, sent periodic email/sms communications to members on segregation, stocked ‘2bin1bag’ kits to make it easier for residents to procure bags, accompanied officials and volunteers for segregation check and plastic ban awareness drives.” Together, much can be achieved. We congratulate both the RWA and the Forum for making things happen.

Wassup HSR? SOLVING TRAFFIC CONGESTION NEAR BDA COMPLEX
Sector 4 resident Bhakta says that the haphazard way in which the four entry/exit gates of BDA Complex are being used, there are minor traffic snarls on 14th Main Road that leads to the flyover. “A simple solution will be to make half the gates entry and the rest as exits,” he suggests. “I know enforcement will be a little hard, but we can try.” Will the traffic cops try it out by taking the BDA officials into confidence, please?
LABOUR CAMP REMOVAL
WANT TO BUY HOME-MADE ORGANIC MANURE?
Sector 2 RWA recently took the help of the BBMP to conduct a drive to vacate all the slum dwellers on vacant sites. “They were given a warning and asked to vacate in three days’ time,” says Chandrashekar, the secretary. “Thanks to MLA Satish Reddy, BBMP assistant executive engineer Vinayak and BBMP Health Inspector Mahesh (now, it’s Vinod) for taking such an initiative.” A similar drive was also conducted in Sector 4 with much the same success. The Somasundrapalya residents want a similar drive in Hosapalya, opposite Purvi Lotus, adjacent to Nagarjuna apartment. “If there is any plan for this area, do let us know and we will join,” says Lalithamba.
The residents of Purva Fairmont apartments in Sector 2 have been composting all their wet waste for the last eight months. “We have good quality organic manure available for bulk purchase of 100kg or more at a nominal rate,” says Usha, the RWA president. “The pickup has to be arranged by the buyer. Please contact me at 98456-91912.”

CHILDREN GETTING KIDNAPPED
The Bommanahalli constituency (HSR is part of it) has the highest number of illegal buildings. No wonder, the maximum flooding happened here as the most number of encroachments on storm water drains and lakebed buffer zones were found here. Clearly, the BBMP and BDA officials have colluded with the builders to do the deed. But what is even more disturbing now is the trend of kidnapping children. “One boy of six years was kidnapped from Aristha Lifestyle building’s parking lot around 7pm or so. This in near Somasundrapalya Lake in front of ShopOn,” says Kamesh R. The kids belonging to daily wage labourers are routinely being kidnapped across this ward. “Child trafficking is thriving right under our noses,” says resident RS Hiremath. “You certainly see many victims at the traffic signals. Wonder where they come from? How they continue to do the begging and why are they never ever rounded up? Do they have some tacit support? Always leaves me uneasy.” Compared to Bangalore a decade ago, beggary has actually come down because of initiatives like Beggars Colony where they are rehabilitated. The others leave the city because of constant crackdown and harassment. Only a few remain with tacit support. These are those who don’t like to be rehabilitated. They prefer begging and even escape from Beggars Colony to do so. “There’s more revenue in begging,” says resident Tara. “Some people sell pens and also beg at the traffic signals.” Jayanagar resident Christopher has a grave concern: “Let me put it very straight. These beggars are all part of the mafia. Morning begging, late night robbery. The police should take strict action. There is no other choice.”
WASHING YOUR CARS ALSO DAMAGES YOUR ROAD
One portion of Sector 7 is always sporting a bad road: 18th Cross, 9th Main. This is the road behind McDonald’s. Tarred many times, the road is back to square one within no time. Resident Fazal Khalil knows the reason: “This particular road has been tarred just a few months ago. The residents here flood the road every day by washing their cars and the driveway of their houses. This is bound to happen. You cannot blame the BBMP for that.” Another important thing to note is that the roads are not curved like an umbrella as these would avoid water stagnation. In addition, the shoulder drains should not be blocked. BBMP saves tar and other materials by not keeping to the umbrella shape. The contractor should be fined for this too and
the residents should make do with wet cloth wipes rather than bathing their vehicles and floors.
SAFETY ALERT
SPOTTED A SNAKE?
HSR is always awash with issues of snake spotting. But the problem also partly lies with the neighbours. They don’t keep the vacant area around their houses clean from shrubbery. And most of those spotted are cobras. In case the BBMP snake catchers don’t respond, call these numbers - 98440-37424 (Anees), 98868-51700 (Mainullah), 92411-44924 (Harish). You can even email Anees at: thesnakesaver@gmail.com. ResidentsWATCH - HSR Layout
One important message was shared in the Whatsapp group by the HSR police. Please take note. Some three or four guys may visit your home claiming that they are from a water company to install shower caps, to save water. They may also claim they are from BESCOM to change light bulbs for free. They have been spotted in several areas. Don’t let them in to your homes. They are known to rob people at gun point. The police wants you to spread this message to all the people you know, as you may save a life. And while you are at it, make sure the front and back doors are locked at all times. And use a door chain always. HAVE A STORY TO SHARE? Send us your HSR success story, however small or big, we will write about it if it works for us just fine. Email: info@residentswatch.in. CM asked to help with revival of Somasundrapalya Lake Residents goad him to rescue it the same way he did with Agara Lake By our feature writer
T
Spread over 16 acres and 29 guntas, the lake land is encroached by the infamous Karnataka Compost Development Corporation that is also contaminating it. To make matters worse, the lake fencing is broken and garbage is getting dumped into it.
12| October 2016
he Somasundrapalya Lake story refuses to die down. Some months ago, we wrote about how MLA Satish Reddy and MP Kupendra Reddy joined hands with BBMP Joint Commissioner Muniraju to revive it. However, barring the clean-up of the area around the lake, nothing much has been done. After chasing inept government officials for months, the residents have now written to chief minister Siddaramiah to rescue the lake before it’s too late. “Both the BDA and BBMP have failed to address the issue even after repeated meetings, discussions and letters by lake activists and citizen groups,” the letter says. On his visit to Agara Lake on September 7, 2013, the CM had ordered the BDA Commissioner for a re-survey and revival of the Somasundrapalya Lake, including the removal of encroachments. However, it’s been over three years and the condition of the lake has only worsened. “The lake can be revived easily if both the BBMP and BDA make efforts. It’s a lake that will not only become a great lung space for residents of Ward 190 but also recharge the ground water table, and add to the bio-diversity of the city’s lakes. As citizens and lake activists, we want to work with the authorities for the revival of the lake. This lake needs your attention as the BDA is not keen to revive the lake and is giving excuses of BBMP encroaching the lake land.” We live in such crazy times where only the supreme commander of the state has to come everytime to rescue the situation. It happened with Agara Lake. It happened with the tree park in Sector 3. Now, residents want it to happen to Somasundrapalya Lake. It’s about time the civic agencies discharged their duties without fear or favour. It’s time they justified the position and salary they are getting at the end of the month. Traffic congestion
Silk Board to KR Puram
Residents want govt to increase the frequency of public transport on the stretch By our feature writer
I
Even if the Metro from Silk Board to KR Puram becomes a reality in two years, increasing the frequency of public transport until such time would be the most prudent thing to do.
ResidentsWATCH - HSR Layout
n a unified voice, residents of HSR Layout, Koramangala, Bellandur, Whitefield and Sarjapur Road have written to the Directorate of Urban Land Transport, the BMTC, the BBMP and Traffic Police, to upgrade public transport on the Central Silk Board and KR Puram stretch. With increasing traffic congestion along this stretch, it is becoming nearly impossible to travel beyond 10 kmph on this stretch during peak hours. And that is resulting in both employers and employees mulling a change of location. Not to mention, the HSR residents who are sandwiched between the traffic from Electronic City and ITPL. The letter has been drafted with signatures from the members of ORR Sarjapur Rising Initiative and Bellandur Forum RWA Network. They are supported by the RWAs of Whitefield, HSR Layout and Koramangala. “Under construction developments, including residential apartments and corporate offices from the likes of Adarsh, RMZ, Embassy and Prestige are expected to put more commuters on the road,” the letter reads. “The only way to manage such large numbers is public transport. Given that the Metro option even if approved, has a timeline of decades, BMTC is our only hope. As buses already carry over 50% of the commuters on this stretch, and a significant chunk are Bellandur to Whitefield/ITPL commuters, we request you to facilitate a prioritised and speedier movement of buses on this stretch along the Outer Ring Road, especially from HSR BDA junction to Marathahalli.” There is yet another bit of good news that the businesses operating along Outer Ring Road have vouched to donate Rs 2000 crore out of the Rs 3600 crore required to build a metro from Silk Board to KR Puram as there are more than 1000 offices along this stretch. Their only condition is that the metro should be ready in two years. We hope for the best in public interest. October 2016|13

Removing HSR traffic bottlenecks Cops come up with a four-pronged strategy
By Zahid H Javali
H
SR Traffic Inspector Rao Ganesh Janardhan is up to his out-of-the-box thinking again. After having removed all the shops lining up the road along EcoSpace in Bellandur, and removing footpath and road encroachments in HSR’s major thoroughfares, he has come up with an idea to decongest the Outer Ring Road area adjacent to HSR Layout. It’s a four-pronged strategy and deserves to be tried out before naysayers come up with a categoric ‘No’ to his proposal. After all, he knows the traffic bottlenecks better than anybody else. He is battling it every day. His reasoning is simple. Go for an equitable

balance, so all the roads and link roads are used optimally. Right now, that’s not the case. So here is how he intends to tip the scale and balance the traffic loads.
Step One
The BDA Complex flyover junction and the Automart junction (intersection of 14th Main and Sarjapur Road) is always choc-a-bloc with traffic. Rao Ganesh says the long waiting time at both these junctions can be eased when the 14th Main stretch after the HSR flyover is made one-way till the Automart junction. The traffic from Koramangala will have to compulsorily take Sarjapur Road to reach HSR. It will be a detour of less than a kilometre but could be really worth it if the situation eases up significantly. With the one-way around Agara Lake, the traffic from Iblur will have to take the HSR flyover to proceed towards Koramangala. The beauty of this move is that there would be no change in the traffic flow on Outer Ring Road; it’s the link roads that will be rectified for maximum utilisation. ResidentsWATCH - HSR Layout
Step Two
This leaves room for some junction improvement at the HSR flyover junction. Right now, the traffic is flowing in four directions. However, when the right turn towards Agara is blocked at 14th Main junction near BDA Complex, the vehicles will be forced to take the 14th Main Road after the flyover and then turn right to proceed towards Iblur, Sarjapur and Outer Ring Road. This way, the junction that was pointing in four different ways will be left with only two. There will be free left turns on both sides of the flyover, easing the traffic flow further.
Step Three
The area under the Agara flyover junction will be eased in just the same manner. The traffic flowing from Koramangala will have no signal to stop it. The reason being that the traffic from Iblur will be going on top of the flyover. And for traffic moving towards the Silk Board or HSR, there will be a U-turn under the flyover.
Step Four
The work is still not over at the Agara flyover. The bus stop will be shifted from under the flyover to the area adjacent to the Saneeshwara Swamy temple. With the traffic from Koramangala moving smoothly from under the flyover, this junction would become signal-free. ResidentsWATCH - HSR Layout
Residents speak
Former chairman of HSR RWA Federation BNR Reddy feels that the 14th Main Road should not be made one-way, because it will add to the time and distance for HSR residents. However, the cops feel that it’s an experiment they should be allowed to try out before any adverse comments are made. Many roads have met with similar opposition in the past in other areas, but the dissent soon died down when the traffic congestion was eased. Resident activist Kavitha Reddy loves the idea, but has a few suggestions to make the plan even more better. “There should be separate lanes towards Koramangala and Sarjapur Road on 14th Main from HSR BDA Complex flyover junction,” she says. “The service road on the side of Agara Lake should only be for traffic moving towards Koramangala from Sarjapur Road/Agara junction. The service road on the side of the Bus Depot should only be for traffic turning at or before HSR BDA Complex flyover junction. The middle lanes should be for traffic going towards HSR BDA Complex and beyond.”
Some questions remain
“Where will you re-locate the bus stop on 14th Main if it’s made one way?” asks Kavitha Reddy. “A skywalk near Mantri Sarovar covering all the four lanes is required; right now, it’s only proposed for two lanes.” October 2016 |19

Saving water
Rain Water harvesting The definitive how-to-guide on RWH
Diagram indicating how recharge wells work in Bangalore’s geological setting
By Rainwater Club
R
ain Water Harvesting (RWH) is simply the act of capturing rainwater and either storing it for use or recharging the ground beneath us. RWH helps households in securing their water supply, reducing their dependence on piped, tanker or borewell water. It can significantly reduce the intensity of flooding during the rainy season. How does RWH work? Rainwater can be broadly harvested in two ways - Rooftop and Groundwater. In Rooftop RWH, the rainwater on the terrace is brought down using pipes. This water is passed through a filter and stored for consumption in an appropriate storage, like sumps or rain barrels. In groundwater recharge, the water from the storm water drains, paved and unpaved, is redirected into what is called a recharge well that percolates the water down to the groundwater aquifer. Why should we do RWH? During the summer, many houses, layouts and apartments primarily depend on borewells and tankers, which are not a sustainable option. Rainwater harvesting can be instrumental to achieve long-term water security. A family of four living in a 30x40 home can expect to have

four to five months of their water needs met by rainwater alone. And five to six months’ of water requirement can be met for a family of four in a larger 40x60 home. Investing on groundwater recharge RWH provides more benefits. By taking water out of over-stressed storm water drains and replenishing them into shallow aquifers, the groundwater recharge wells raise the water tables and reduce the intensity of flooding in the neighbourhood or a private layout. Considering a layout of 30 standard-sized houses where no rooftop RWH systems have been installed, each year nearly 2.9 million litres of water will run off from the roofs into the layout’s storm water drains. This figure doesn’t even include the amount of water running into the drains from roads and open spaces. How much does it cost and how long does it take to build? On an average, the costs for retrofitting a home with a rooftop RWH system and direct storage typically range from Rs 20,000-50,000 for houses on plots of up to 60X40 sites. The cost ultimately depends on site conditions and consumer preferences, such as whether to store water in an existing tank, such as a sump, or to purchase a new rain barrel. For new constructions, if the planning is done upfront, the incremental costs ResidentsWATCH - HSR Layout

Filter - Ferro cement casing due to rainwater harvesting will be insignificant. The construction is typically completed in one to two weeks, depending on the project size. A typical groundwater recharge well costs about Rs 25,000. The costs may be slightly higher for larger plots. The construction can be completed in a matter of days. Please note that the cost ranges cited here are highly subject to changes with inflation, change in material costs and labour rates. Is it safe to drink rainwater? Yes. Rainwater is the purest form of water. If a layout is free from contaminating sources like excessive plant or animal life that can litter rooftop catchments, and if the owners of rooftop RWH systems regularly sweep their terrace and periodically clean their filter, then the water will be safe for all purposes, including drinking and cooking. However, they need to be run through an Aquaguard or other household filtration system. Prior to consuming water from an RWH system, the owner should first test the water for potability by sending a sample to one of the city’s several testing labs. As for the water replenished to the groundwater aquifer through recharge wells, there is no better filtration system in nature than earth’s soil. If the residents ensure the cleanliness of their storm water drains from solid and liquid waste, then the water recharged will be perfectly safe to consume. How are RWH systems built? In a rooftop RWH system retrofit, all dwellings already have pipes to drain the rainwater from the terrace areas. These pipes will be attached to additional piping that leads the rainwater through a filter and then into a storage tank such as an ResidentsWATCH - HSR Layout
Groundwater recharge well in a storm drain (All pics - Rainwater club) existing sump or a new rain barrel. In the case of rain barrel storage, a platform will be built on which the barrel can rest. This way, the buckets or other water-gathering vessels can fit beneath the tap at the bottom of the barrel. Groundwater recharge wells are built either in storm drains, in open areas such as parks, or in the vacant yard of large plots. In one to two days, a well-digger can create a hole 20-30 ft deep and line it with concrete rings. The well will then be finished with minor masonry work and covered with either a steel grating or a solid concrete slab. How do we maintain our RWH system, and how much does it cost? The work involved in maintenance is negligible. The tasks include the following. After a rain or two, the owner will need to open by valve or end cap, a chamber called the first rain separator to let out the water collected from the first few minutes of rain. This water tends to be dirty and is not suitable for consumption. Which is why it is collected in a separate chamber and not allowed into any storage structure. Rinse the sand/gravel and jelly stone that make up the filter media once every six months. Replace the filter media once in two years. In the case of a recharge well, it will need to be de-silted every five years. Happy Rain Water Harvesting. @ Oorvani Foundation/Open Media Initiative. WANTED: Pothole reporters Spotted a crater? Report them to Kamesh
Kamesh Rastogi By our feature writer
H Today, HSR Layout isn’t short of proactive residents. But proactive officials, bureaucrats and politicians are in short supply. It’s time they worked together for a better HSR.
ResidentsWATCH - HSR Layout
SR Layout’s ‘pothole poojari’ Kamesh Rastogi who did most of the pothole poojas in the neighbourhood in the last few months, is keeping up the momentum. Recently, he and activist Kavitha Reddy attended a meeting at the BBMP headquarters regarding potholes and bad roads across Bangalore. They came back with essential contacts and their new assignment: identify the bad roads and submit them to the BBMP for action. Organised by The Hindu newspaper, the meeting was chaired by BBMP Chief Engineer Nagaraj. “We presented the HSR issues in detail,” says Rastogi. “We also raised concerns on the delay in fixing the potholes and the quality of the work.” He is now in contact with Bommanahalli Chief Engineer Srinivasmurthy and Assistant Executive Engineer Vinayak. “We have submitted to them the list of bad roads, which we had compiled after the feedback from residents in various Whatsapp groups, including Residents Watch.” If you have more bad roads to highlight, email him (krsoni@gmail. com) with photos and their exact location. Do mention your name and contact number as well. He will constantly update the list and submit to the BBMP. If you have more than just potholes to report, you can make use of Citizen Matters’ initiative by logging in here: https://tinyurl.com/hsrmapping October 2016 |31
TotalWellness Sole to soul. That’s what wellness is all about. And thankfully, the neighbourhood in and around HSR Layout, offers these and more. From allopathy to homeopathy; ayurveda to naturopathy, there is a suite of services available for the discerning resident.

Lung spaces
Land saved from sharks Sector 3 gets a full-fledged Tree Park, thanks to resident activism By our feature writer
T
When the going gets tough, the tough get going. And that’s what happened when a few Sector 3 residents teamed up to turn a labour camp into a lung space for HSR.
ResidentsWATCH - HSR Layout
he over nineacre vast tract of land behind Subramanya temple was plunged into litigation for over a decade. Finally, thanks to the strong stand taken by the state government to take back all the land in lakebeds and tankbeds, this land was finally ruled in the favour of the government (revenue department). Soon, the land was handed over to the BDA and a tree park is coming up in Sector 3. Much of this would not have been possible without the proactive efforts of the residents living around the area. What was once the hiding ground of criminals is today a mushrooming park. What was once a labour camp and a debris dumping ground is now a lung space. Ofcourse, there were efforts to scuttle it by vested interests (builders, politicians, businessmen), but public interest eventually prevailed. Several residents voluntarily donated for the cause and even planted trees. No less than chief minister Siddaramaiah planted a sapling here. Now, even the Comprehensive Development Plan of the BDA shows it as a green spot. All of this goes to show that a clear conscience and continued perseverence can work wonders. Some of the residents who are still playing a key role, include Mahadeva, Nagaraj, Ramalingam, Girish, Rajesh, HM Javali, Arvind, Ugrappa, Mallesh, Somashekar and Dr Kittur, among others. More than 1000 trees have been planted here. A jogging track is getting readied. Revolving gates have already come up on three sides of the park. A couple of ponds have been set up to recharge the groundwater. Three borewells are already in place. The residents have also set up a Whatsapp group for real-time updates on the park. Way to go.
