ere is a list of problems being faced by the various sectors in HSR Layout. We outline them, sectorwise, and urge the concerned authorities to act on ȱ ¢ǯȱ ȱ Ĵ ȱ ȱ ȱ ě ȱ ȱ ȱ to commissioner Rajneesh Goel, MLA Satish Reddy, corporators Latha N Murthy and N Saraswathamma (Sector 5 comes under her jurisdiction) by the Federation of HSR Layout Residents Welfare Associations. A quick and speedy action is awaited. We are watching. SECTOR 1 W Asphalting of all roads from 19th Main to 31st Main and 3rd Cross to 17th Cross and re-painting of road signs. W Removal of silt and cleaning of drains and subsequent linkage to the storm water drain closer to Agara Lake.

SECTOR 2 W Footpath (pedestrian walkway) to be executed in Sector-2 completely. W Bitumen surfacing of all roads in Sector-2. This is pend ing for a long time.

The majority of the problems being faced by most sectors in HSR Layout are ȱę¡ ȱ ȱ roads and storm water drains. Not to mention, illegal constructions, upcoming commercial complexes and mobile towers. 18| December 2012

SECTOR 3 W Repairing and asphalting of all the roads from 14th Main to 18th Main and from 19th Cross to 26th Cross in 3rd Sector. The approach road on 15th B Main is dam aged by truckers who dumped the silt waste in Sy No 69/1, Haralukunte village in 3rd Sector against whom the BBMP has lodged a complaint with the HSR Police Station when the Federation intervened in public interest. The asphalting of roads is not done as per the time-bound programme even after six years. The metal road indicators are to be installed after asphalting is completed in the entire 3rd Sector. W De-silting, cleaning and covering of storm water drains on 17th A Main and 25th Cross by raising their height to ȱ ȱ ȱĚ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ Ȭȱ rainy seasons. There is a need to divert the sanitary water gushing down from 2nd Sector to 3rd Sector from 19th Main to 25th Cross which further gets ResidentsWATCH

stagnated on 17th A Main and 22nd Cross due to huge silt and waste materials dumped in the drains. The re-construction of storm water drains in the entire 3rd Sector is urgently required as they are not maintained properly. W Illegal constructions, upcoming commercial complexes and mobile towers in the residential area. Immediate action is needed on these serious problems. SECTOR 4 W The main storm water drain between 12th and 13th Cross is blocked by sewage water. Jacketing work has started but there is no storm water drain (SWD) linked to the cross roads, Čą Â?žŽȹÂ?˜ȹ Â‘Â’ÂŒÂ‘ČąÂŠÂ•Â•ČąÂ?‘Žȹ ÂœČąÂ˜Â&#x;Ž›Ě˜ ȹÂ˜Â—Čą the road even during non-rainy seasons. These SWDs are required to be connected to the Main Storm Water Drain to ease the problem. Due to Â?Â‘Â’ÂœÇ°ČąÂ?‘Žȹ•Š—Â?ꕕœȹ ÂŽÂ›ÂŽČąÂ‹ÂŽÂ’—Â?Čą ’—Œ›ŽŠœ’—Â?•¢ȹꕕŽÂ?ȹ‹¢ȹÂ?‘ŽȹÂ?Š¢ȹ and the BBMP was forced to take a decision. By segregating waste, one ensures that only 10-15% of Â?‘Žȹ ÂŠÂœÂ?ÂŽČąÂ™Â›Â˜Â?žŒŽÂ?ČąÂ’ÂœČąÂ?ž–™ŽÂ?ȹ’—Â?Â˜ČąÂ•ÂŠÂ—Â?ꕕœȹ Â‘’•ŽȹÂ?Â‘ÂŽČąÂ˜Â?‘Ž›ȹ waste is reused or recycled. This approach is more sustainable in the long run and also environment-friendly.

IJAYALAKSHMI ANAND is a lioness. One look at her and you can tell she is a strong, independent 49-year-old, who juggles between ȱ ¢ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ě ¢ǯȱ ȱ ȱ consists of her graceful mother-in-law, two boys, Darshan and Suhas, and her green-thumbed husband, Ananda BC, who works as Assistant Director in the horticulture department at Malur (Kolar). Incidentally, he has a great interest in developing parks and planting trees in HSR Layout. Over to Vijayalakshmi, the president of the HSR Layout Sector 4 Residents Welfare Association. What are the problems in HSR Layout and what can be done about them? HSR Layout is a developing area and faces many problems. To date, only 40% of the problems are solved. Two major problems are the garbage issue and the lack of well-planned and well-connected storm water drains. ResidentsWATCH

What are the issues facing Sector 4 and are there any solutions? In Sector 4, the storm water drains are not connected to the main storm water drain. Therefore, during heavy rainfall, the roads are covered with water, making travelling a nightmare. Residents and commercial establishments along these drains complain of mosquitoes and strong, unpleasant smells, which is also a health hazard. In addition, the park in Sector 4 has no lighting due to which citizens cannot make use of the park in the early mornings and late evenings. This is also because of the frequent snake sightings here. I also wish a toilet could be constructed for the security guards as well as for the general public. What can be done to weed out the garbage collection problem in the neighbourhood? A good coordination between the BBMP, RWA (Resident Welfare Associations) and residents is crucial to solve this crisis. Unfortunately, this is currently not the case. Importantly, residents should give all their cooperation to the authorities concerned. What are the top three achievements of Sector 4 Residents Welfare Association? All the roads in Sector 4 are asphalted. Also, no sewage seeps into the storm water drains in our sector. However, as the President of Sector 4 Association, I am ȱ ȱ ¢ȱ ę ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ more needs to be done for the welfare of the residents. How would you describe your experience of working with corporator Latha Narasimha Murthy and MLA Satish Reddy in solving civic issues? Both of them are approachable and take note of our grievances. With every situation and context, try to think about your safety and what would be the best response. Don’t stay in an uncomfortable situation, but also make sure your response won’t endanger you further. My son is 22 years old and has just started working. He has suddenly become arrogant and refuses to give me money. I was relying on him to look after me. I am surviving on a small salary and do not enjoy good health. I don’t know how long I will be able to work. I have no savings whatsoever. It is sad that your son is behaving like this. It may be a passing phase that he has started earning and feels proud. Please try to explain

n a few years, Planet Earth will have severe water scarcity. Therefore, we have to conserve our natural resources before it is too late. My family and I are passionate about conservation, sustainability and a green environment. That is why, when we shifted to HSR Layout from our Jayanagar apartment, we decided to build an eco-friendly home. Our house, Hombelaku, was designed by architects Deepak Godhi and Chitra Vishwanath, who share our passion for working towards a sustainable environment for the future. Our house was built on a 50x80 site on HSR Club Road using eco-friendly and locally available materials. ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ Ȭ ȱ ȱ ȱ ¡ ȱ ȱę ȱ clay, quarry dust and cement. The mosaic tiles were replaced with clay and khota tiles, which keep the house, cool. To avoid using lead, we neither painted nor plastered our walls. The porous walls that you see now ensure that there is steady circulation. The special tiles on the roof also ensure that no heat from the terrace warms up the house. These features also reduce the dependence on fans and air-conditioners. The wet waste is composted in our backyard every day. Our dry waste generation is minimal. Since we use solar heaters and CFL bulbs, our electricity consumption is quite less, too. Unlike other households, we use solar lanterns during power shutdown. We follow the three R’s of environment (reduce, reuse, recycle) as much as possible. Rohit follows a strict diet and exercise regime to maintain his weight. He runs and swims every alternate day and cycles more than 100 km twice a week. Along with endurance training, he also lifts weights. 66| December 2012

ver since a boy, speed always fascinated Rohit Giri. Now, years later, he is a professional superbike racer. To date, he has won more than 80 competitions in India and abroad and has every right to brag that he has “lost count of all the trophies” he has won. After all, he is India’s next rising star. However, in a country like India, where the national sport hockey takes the backseat and cricket rules the masses, superbike racing has a small following. Rohit admits that the lack of support from both the government ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ę ȱ his dreams. In 2008, Rohit won the hearts of the crowds when he made a memorable debut in the Malaysian Super Series. He was a runner-up, a remarkable feat for a person who had no prior experience in racing abroad. Most countries felicitate their citizens for representing their country in international events.
