mong 158 life members, including 14 executive committee members, we found Riyaz to be the most active of them all. Then again, that is his job. As one of the co-founders of Sector 5 Residents Welfare Association (registered 11 years ago), Riyaz is its secretary for the last four years. Before that, he was the treasurer for four years. Though, he is in charge of the smallest sector in HSR Layout (230 BDA sites; 180 occupied), the problems are not few in number. And unlike the rest of HSR Layout, Sector 5 comes under the jurisdiction of a different corporator (N Saraswathamma) and MLA (Ramalinga Reddy). Over to Riyaz… Tell us about the other members of the association? MKN Acharya is the President. He is a retired section officer and a vocalist who runs the Sri Raghu Institute of Music in our sector. Our Vice President happens to be social activist Jyoti Prabhu and our Joint Secretary is AR Venkatesan… a very senior member who gives us good advice. What is the biggest achievement of your association in the last four years? There is now 90% supply of Cauvery water and the drainage system is much better than before. Earlier, there was no water supply in the upper belt. The sewerage pipes were not technically installed, leading to blocked manholes. Even now, the pipes are only partially reconstructed. BWSSB is good at leaving things half done. We have started the Chinnaswamy Mudaliar merit scholarship scheme where we locate meritorious students and award them yearly scholarships, thanks to resident and ResidentsWATCH

philanthropist A Sudhakaran (businessman and realtor). This year, we want to adopt a few poor children and fund their education right up to 10th standard. What is the biggest problem facing Sector 5? BDA’s biggest blunder is that they reserved no civic amenity sites for hospitals, schools and parks. The only park we have is less than half an acre without a children’s play area. The BBMP needs to repair the roads on 4th Cross and 11th main. The BWSSB needs to give a connection from 14th Main to Sector 3 for Cauvery water supply. With that, 100% of our water woes will be solved. We need more banks, commercial establishments, one corporation hospital, a community hall and a bus terminus on 14th Main – people on 8th Cross and 13th Cross have to go all the way to BDA Complex or Jakkasandra to take a bus. What do you think of corporator N Saraswathamma? She’s doing good work, but due to lack of funds, some of the better programmes are not being implemented. There is no development in the last three years. The only park we have is not being properly maintained – there is no water supply to the park. What should be her top priorities? She should visit the area every month or atleast once every three months to enquire and set right the problems involving the BBMP. Only then will she be known as a good corporator. And MLA Ramalinga Reddy? We have the same problem with him. He has to visit us more often and implement all the developmental activities. The MLA is never there when we go to meet him and the corporator says she has no funds. Hope, they give us a positive response in the near future. What do you like about HSR as a whole? Good roads and good houses, but much more needs to be done. If more importance is given to its ecology and environment, HSR Layout would be the best place to live in. And the biggest problem facing HSR? Many multistoried buildings are coming up, creating much mayhem. They use a lot of water, thereby depriving dwellers of ResidentsWATCH

independent houses. They dig sumps in the cellar, so all the water goes down the cellar and the others are deprived of it. This is a problem in our sector too.

Use a form of inter-dental cleaning daily. This can be dental floss or alternatively, inter-dental brushes such as TePe. You have not properly cleaned your teeth until you clean right between them. Here is where using inter-dental cleaning helps you do this effectively.

If you smoke cigarettes, give them up. This is the single most important change that you can make to improve both your dental and general health. Your dental team and doctor are able to give you support during the process of kicking the habit. We all want you to succeed.

It is important to brush first thing in the morning (to remove plaque and bacteria that have accumulated overnight) and the last thing at night because saliva (which helps to keep the cavity-causing plaque off teeth) dries up as we sleep. Toothbrushes should come with a small head and soft bristles. Set a timer for two minutes; hold the brush at a 45-degree angle. Start at the same place every time. Begin by working your way around each tooth in turns. Ensure you clean all faces of the teeth to avoid missing any areas and don’t forget your gums.

If it is possible to cleanse the mouth completely of the bacterial plaque and maintain it that way, there would be low incidence of tooth decay or any other gum problems.

Always rinse your toothbrush with water after brushing. Store your toothbrush in an upright position, if possible, and allow it to air dry until you use it again. Don’t routinely cover toothbrushes or store them in closed containers, which can encourage the growth of bacteria.

Tooth decay is the process that results in a cavity (dental caries). It occurs when bacteria in your mouth make acids that eat away at the tooth. If not treated, tooth decay can cause pain, infection, and tooth loss.

Sichuan, for an authentic Oriental experience By Zahid H Javali

weet and sour, salty and spicy. These are the four distinctive Oriental flavours that you will sample at Sichuan, HSR Layout’s newest Chinese restaurant. Sukesh Srinivasan and N Ramakrishna are spreading the gospel of authentic Chinese cuisine (water chestnut, broccoli, zucchini, shiitake mushrooms and spices sourced straight from South Asian countries) across South Bangalore. After tasting success with their Sichuan outlet in Koramangala, they have branched out to HSR Layout. And soon, they will be in JP Nagar and Whitefield. Sukesh is the executive chef at Sichuan. With his experience in the F&B industry for over 28 years, he has enough Oriental experience to make him more than just a master chef. Says he: “After my stint with the Taj, I joined the Merlin Group of Hotels, which is a 600-room hotel in Malaysia with six F&B outlets, right from authentic Thai to Chinese. They have 60 hotels in South Asia and this was the biggest hotel of them. I was the only non-Chinese working in a Chinese kitchen.” The experience is still helping him, because he goes back to Singapore and Malaysia to source the ingredients.

Sukesh is no stranger to entrepreneurship either. His earlier ventures included restaurants like Shanghai (Richmond Road), Royal Garden (St Mark’s Road), Flamingo (St Mark’s Road), and Sichuan. “Our recipes are authentic. We have adapted them to suit the Indian palate,” says Raam. “We are probably the only restaurant in town serving authentic Sichuan food.” Rightfully, indeed – fresh herbs, spices and sauces are imported from Sichuan. Raam’s entrepreneurship began with Sichuan in 2010 with their flagship Koramangala restaurant. However, he embarked on his F&B experience with the Jacaranda restaurant in Koramangala. He quit as GM after serving for 12 years. Later, he moved to Aromas of China, Tandoor, Banjara Group, UB Hospitalities and Kyra restaurant, before starting Sichuan. The duo’s scaling up model is simple. “We focus on home deliveries and takeaways and have seating for just a few people,” says Raam. “After one-and-a-half years, we have started in HSR because people wanted us to start home delivery in HSR or start a branch there.” Without further ado, we dug into the chef’s favourites, beginning with Thai Lemon Basil chicken soup. The reasoning? “Sichuan ResidentsWATCH

food is going to be a little spicy, so you start with something much lighter,” says Sukesh. “The tanginess also peps up your appetite.” After an invigorating soup, the starters worked up an appetite: the Sizzling Chilli Potato (in garlic and black bean sauce), Gong Bao chicken (chilli paste in black bean sauce; a tad sweet) and Thai basil chicken (chilli paste, lemon grass, fish sauce, galangal). It was now time for the main course comprising noodles and rice. We sampled Chilli Basil Thai rice, the popular staple food in Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. It’s spicy, thanks to the chilli paste and carries a distinctive prawn flavour. Don’t forget to partake of the irresistible green onion paste kept on the table. This was followed by stir fried vegetable Hakka noodles. And the chef had the last word. “We don’t hydrate our noodles; they are fresh,” says Sukesh. “The noodles are made overnight and we get them from our factory first thing in the morning. They are a little heavier than the other noodles; you don’t get the crunchiness or the stickiness. And they are not oily at all.” Ready to eat something spicy, something sweet, and authentic to boot? bought an apartment (resale) from an individual who had not taken possession of the flat from the builder (The Confident Group) and had a loan going. The builder was my point of contact for this purchase and I had absolutely no interaction with the seller. In fact, the senior executive from The Confident Group, refused to share the seller’s contact details. The builder helped me in getting the housing loan through Axis Bank and ensured that all the documents related to the apartment were handed over to the bank executive for verification. The builder demanded that I pay Rs 30,000 in cash. This, I was told, would be used to grease the palms of the brokers and lawyers attached to the sub-registrar’s office. I categorically refused to give any extra money for which I will not get a receipt. The executive told me to get the registration done on my own and that The Confident Group would not be able to handle this. I contacted a few people who had recently purchased apartments, and everyone said that they gave a hefty amount in cash to the builder for registration and khata. I also contacted the organisation, Ipaidabribe.com. Their comment was, “It is illegal to undervalue the property, but because of the land mafia in Bangalore, even though you want to be honest, it is impossible to go with the actual value i.e government value.” A day before the registration, I contacted TR Raghunandan (an IAS officer who is a member of the State Planning Board who has also initiated forums to tackle corruption). He told me not to buckle down and get the registration done. His golden words still reverberate in my ears, “Bribe takers are really cowards.” And, indeed they are! Raghu linked me to Pritam who, too, had refused to bribe for registering his apartment. Pritam, was very helpful. He diligently explained the process of registration and motivated me not to give in to anti-social pressure. He also shared the ‘India Against Corruption’ badges. I went to the Sub-Registrar’s office, with my daughter. We wore the ‘India Against Corruption’ badge. (The scene is like any other government office – hoards of people, some chewing paan, and many with the ‘menial’ look, ready to drop at the feet of the unbuttoned paan-chewing loafers that ResidentsWATCH

acted like their messiah.) My daughter and I were looked at with much curiosity. I guess, that’s because they saw a school girl and a professionally attired lady flaunting the ‘India Against Corruption’ badge barging in directly to the SubRegistrar’s office without a broker or a male companion. Actually, it is quite easy to get your apartment registered, and you do not have to part with your hard-earned money either. This is how I acquired a 1244 sq ft of place in my name, and it did not even take 30 minutes. I directly contacted the sub-registrar and asked him the procedure to get the property registered. He asked for the sales deed, encumbrance certificate, tax paid receipts and the khata. I had the print out of all these docs. This was the first step – getting the papers verified. The sales deed, and the other forms were signed by me and the seller. The Witness signature was also acquired. I gave the bank drafts for the registration and stamp ResidentsWATCH

duty. I paid Rs 360 towards scanning charges. No, I did not have to run from one table to another with folded hands. All I had to run for before I went to the government office was to get the documents in order. Get print-outs and Xerox. Get the drafts towards registration and stamp duty. Call up people to understand the process. What flummoxed me is that The Confident Group is a member of CREDAI. They also have a department that handles registration and khata-related work. However, they ask for cash payment from their customers. I can’t help but wonder, how eloquently they are fooling their customers and promoting corruption. rior to 2004, remembering dreams had become a long-forgotten art for me. Either I was having dreamless nights or my dreams were so inconsequential that they never rose to the conscious level and nudged me into remembrance. Just when I resigned myself to more dreamless nights, reigning Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan came along. No, not in person but we met up when I drifted into the land of nod. This time though, I remembered the dream clearly because I was confronting Khan on a certain issue. “Why aren’t you protected?” I asked him. Khan snapped his fingers. Two bodyguards wearing pale blue shirts appeared from behind me and inspected the area, their backs to Khan and me. That’s what I remembered of my dream. I mentioned this to Tarun Cherian, the then creative director of an advertising agency who was also a reiki master and spiritual guide. Without much ado, he placed before me three possible interpretations: One: Khan’s life could well be under threat. Two: Khan might be feeling threatened by competition from newcomers; or he might be going through bouts of low self-esteem because some consider Aamir to be a far better actor. Three: Khan could well be me feeling threatened about something like the meditation workshop I was to take up with Cherian a few days later. But I was protected, if the dream was to be believed.
