ResourceCo – FULL CIRCLE – SUMMER 2023-24
M E SS AG E F RO M T H E M A N AG I N G D I R E CTO R In this summer 2023-24 edition of Full Circle, we have captured some of our recent milestones including the execution of our growth journey as well as our exciting future priorities. ResourceCo’s expansion in VIC has been a massive focus, particularly with our operations in Brooklyn. The site is uniquely placed to accept mixed waste. We have invested in plant and equipment and developed a forward work plan to efficiently recover a wider range of materials. Our Wingfield site in SA, has also undergone upgrades with the commissioning of our new glass recycling plant. This new plant builds our capacity to extract maximum value from an even wider range of materials. Tyrecycle, our tyre recycling business, continues to grow with huge investments across the country. Major capital investments in Western Australia will deliver the state’s first rubber crumbing capability in Perth and Australia’s first mining tyre recycling facility in Pt Hedland. In this issue we recognise 5 successful years of landfill diversion at our Cleanaway-ResourceCo Resource Recovery Facility (CRRRF) at Wetherill Park, NSW. The CRRRF, established in 2018, manufactures Processed Engineered Fuel from material otherwise destined for landfill. Our new plant in Hemmant, QLD will enable millions of tonnes of resource recovery supporting the national target of achieving 80% by 2030. The plant will be operational in 2024. QLD has also been a focus for ResourceCo’s soil reuse and recycling business, along with Tyrecycle, with investments and market expansion. We are excited at the opportunity and the role of the industry ahead of the 2032 Olympics . At the forefront of our growth , has always been our people. This year we’ve celebrated the people who have completed long service and those who have joined us to deliver our shared purpose to make the world a better place, delivering fantastic environmental outcomes, and contribute to the economic viability of our country. I am proud of our teams across Australia and in Asia for the work they do every day. ResourceCo has an exciting future, and we are strongly positioned with our continued focus on innovation and ongoing commitment of our people. Wishing you and your families a relaxing holiday season and look forward to your continued support in 2024 and beyond. Simon Brown Managing Director, ResourceCo

For over five years the Cleanaway-ResourceCo Resource Recovery Facility (CRRRF) in Wetherill Park has been re-manufacturing landfill bound materials into a sustainable fuel source for high-energy consuming industries. In July this year our CRRRF team celebrated the diversion of more than 350,000 tonnes of material from landfill during the first five years of operation. ResourceCo’s CEO of Energy, Henry Anning commended the CRRRF team for their commitment to maximising the value of all resources. “Every day our Wetherill Park CRRRF team prioritise resource recovery over landfill, in doing so they manufacture a highly engineered fuel that offsets fossil consumption,” Henry says. The 350,000 tonnes of material diverted from landfill has avoided more than 260,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of taking 70,000 cars off the road!
Henry says the avoided carbon dioxide emissions by landfill diversion is only a small part of the benefits of this resource recovery activity, there are benefits for the users of the Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF) as well. “High energy users, such as operators of cement kilns, often depend on fossil fuel to manufacture their products. Our PEF provides these industries with an alternate fuel source that reduces their reliance on gas or coal consumption”. “This in-turn enables our partners to reap the benefits of reduced costs, carbon emissions and in some cases a product which they can sell with sustainable attributes” says Henry.

MINDING THE B U S I N E SS O F MINING TYRES
The management of off-the-road tyres when they reach the end of their useful life is an environmental issue that is increasingly no longer a behind-the-scenes ‘business as usual’ matter for the mining industry. Each year, 130,000 tonnes of Australia’s off-the-road (OTR) tyres reach the end of their life, 90% is from the mining industry (79%) and agricultural sector (11%). Given the amount of active mining trucks and farming operations throughout Australia, this statistic isn’t overly alarming, however, the recycling rate of these tyres paint a very different picture. Fewer than 10% of Australia’s OTR tyres are recovered, this falls to less than 2% of mining and agriculture tyres. Presently the fate of most off-the-road mining tyres is landfill or buried on-site. As governments, shareholders and the wider community become increasingly more aware of sustainability performance, waste and resource recovery opportunities come into the spotlight. The resource recovery potential for end-of-life OTR tyres is not lost on

Australia’s largest tyre recycler, Tyrecycle. Each year Tyrecycle processes in excess of 17 million tyres– diverting 99% from landfill. Tyrecycle has firmly set its sights on tacking Australia’s lagging off-theroad tyre recycling performance, which is why it is behind the investment of millions of dollars to build Australia’s first off-the-road tyre recycling facility at Port Hedland, Western Australia. Tyrecycle’s CEO, Jim Fairweather says Western Australia has enormous potential to shift the dial on resources recovered from end-of-life off-the-road mining tyres. “It’s no accident Tyrecycle has chosen to invest in new plant in the Pilbara, we want our operations as close to Australia’s largest consumers of off-the-road tyres as possible,” Jim says. “This project will transform the management of legacy and ongoing rubber mining waste in Western Australia,” Jim says. “It’s a big step towards making real progress in delivering strong environmental outcomes, while providing an economic and jobs boost.”
ResourceCo – FULL CIRCLE – SUMMER 2023-24
The new facility will have the capacity to process over 10 tonnes of off-theroad tyres per hour and 27,000 tonnes annually. With an intention to integrate into existing logistic networks, the facility is strategically placed to leverage Tyrecycle’s extensive experience in managing in-bound tyres and offtake distribution. “Australia-wide we operate multiple networks of supply chains for our passenger, commercial, truck and bus tyre feedstocks. Being able to integrate our processes into mining operations through Port Hedland will provide our partners with an efficient mine-toprocessing service,” Jim says. “Every tonne of crumb rubber used in asphalt mixes represents a greenhouse gas saving of 2,463kg CO2-e. Knowing your mining tyres took that path instead of being buried is a fantastic outcome for stakeholders and the environment alike,” Jim says. “This project delivers a local Pilbara-based approach towards the environmentally and socially conscious management of off-the-road tyre waste,” Jim says.

ResourceCo’s Soil Reuse & Recycling business is building a capability to maximise the potential of an even greater range of materials.
recognising the value within all the material we handle in order to maximise outcomes for our customers and the environment – that’s where soil recycling adds to our reuse offering,”.
ResourceCo’s Soil Reuse & Recycling (SRR) team has developed an industry leading track record of reusing soil materials, and now they’ve set their sights on explaining their reuse expertise into advanced soil recycling.
ResourceCo’s soil reuse and recycling pillar operates in three core areas – providing reuse solutions for structural material in the marketplace; reusing fill material in its network of rehabilitation and development sites; and processing and recycling mixed soil materials to create new commodities.
This focus has come with a refreshed name for the business pillar, Formally known as ResourceCo Material Solutions. Steve Harrison, CEO of ResourceCo SRR says the name change better reflects the growing capability of the team who are intent on doing more with the material they manage. “We want to focus on what’s at the core of ResourceCo,
“Throughout ResourceCo’s operations we screen and separate an extensive range of materials that have value,” Steve says. “We genuinely subscribe to the ethos that there is no such thing as waste, and the reality is, the bulk of what we handle can be recycled into a range of high quality, in-demand products.”

An important part of ResourceCo’s soil reuse and recycling capability is the ability to rehabilitate landscapes with fill material. ResourceCo prides itself on utilising innovative approaches to resource recovery in order to deliver positive outcomes for clients and the environment. This year the number of ResourceCo’s fill locations expanded with the opening of a new site in Oaklands Junction, Victoria. Managing a dispersed network of fill sites enables ResourceCo to marry the needs of landholders who have ambitions to improve their landscape or have site rehabilitation obligations, with clients who have material they need removed. State Manager of ResourceCo’s Soil Reuse & Recycling business pillar, Deane Reid, says managing fill sites is part of an integrated ability to reuse soil.
“We manage these fill sites for two reasons, to provide a pathway for soil material when there isn’t a market requirement for a certain type of material, as well as delivering land improvement outcomes for landholders who need fill,” said Deane. Deane says managing multiple sites across a strategically dispersed footprint balances ResourceCo’s offering to deliver a wider range of options to clients. “The Oaklands Junction site (345 Oaklands Rd), north-west of Melbourne, complements clean fill sites in Bacchus Marsh (west) and Langwarrin (southeast). ResourceCo’s integrated soils and mixed materials recycling facility in Brooklyn (inner west) also ensures efficient and sustainable operations for various projects.”

Often glass that doesn’t survive the recovery process in a Material Recovery Facility ends up in landfill. It is extensively contaminated with plastic, paper, cardboard and given its appearance, it is forgivably described as residual rubbish. But that’s not how ResourceCo views the residual material, the ResourceCo team see it as a resource, ready to be remanufactured and diverted from landfill. In September ResourceCo welcomed the South Australian Deputy Premier and Minister for Climate, Environment and Water, the Hon. Susan Close MP to visit the now operational new glass recycling plant at Wingfield. The Deputy Premier commended the truly collaborative approach of the plant, “The South Australian Government is pleased to partner with industry, local and Commonwealth governments by investing into infrastructure like ResourceCo’s glass recycling plant”. “From grant funding, to supplying feedstock through MRFs and procurement opportunities for off-take products, this partnership is truly collaborative,” said the Deputy Premier. ResourceCo has been working closely with civil contractors and procurers of sand to demonstrate product performance capability, value for money and sustainability outcomes. ResourceCo is also developing an environmental product disclosure for the glass sand to independently verify the environmental benefits of this new product.

The Adelaide Central Market precinct is an iconic site within Adelaide’s CBD. Equally as iconic is South Australia’s long-standing leadership when it comes to resource recovery. Earlier this year these two themes came tougher when ResourceCo recycled over 12,500 tonnes of concrete from the Gouger Street site. ResourceCo’s CEO of Recycling and Waste, Brad Lemmon, recently met with City of Adelaide Lord Mayor, Jane Lomax-Smith where they toured the redevelopment site. The Lord Mayor generously acknowledged ResourceCo’s commitment to recycling the 600 plus loads of concrete from the site.
in South Australia because we’re really ahead of the pack when it comes to recycling waste, and reusing demolition material,” said the Lord Mayor. ResourceCo received the material at Wingfield where it has been remanufactured into products that have been resupplied into the market for a wide range of civil construction applications. “Our relationship with ResourceCo has been an win-win for everybody, but particularly the environment. It means that there has been less waste going to landfill, and less quarrying into the future.

RO HO N L AC K Soil Reuse & Recycling
With 16 years’ industry experience in clean fill, soil screening and crushing operations, I have worked in positions ranging from Machine Operator, Site Supervisor and most recently promoted to Site Operations Manager – to compliment this, I have been with ResourceCo for 6 years. I had a passion for earthmoving when I was a teenager and have never looked back. People talk about fishing and 4WD driving however what brings me joy is sitting in a piece of heavy machinery and getting things done. How would you explain your role at ResourceCo to someone you’ve just met? I am the Site Operations Manager at ResourceCo which oversees all our Victorian clean fill sites and our Sand & Soil recycling facility at Brooklyn. I ensure our sites comply with all company policies and procedures, all clean fill sites are following the rehabilitation plan and safety measures are adhered to while running the sites effectively.

Rewarding, Motivating, Teamwork. Tell us something we don’t know about you.
what’s impressed you most about ResourceCo? ResourceCo is very proactive with looking to expand on the talents of their employees and giving them the support they need to succeed in their roles along with guidance and upskilling towards further career development. How have you challenged yourself at ResourceCo? Since July I have absorbed the role of Maintenance Manager, now both maintenance and production teams fall under the Operations umbrella.
JA K E Z ERA FA Cleanaway-ResourceCo ResourceRecovery Facility
Initially it was quite a challenge having to divide my focus between production, whilst getting up to speed with the maintenance systems and processes we have in place. By utilising skills learnt from the Emerging Leaders course, I have now implemented the right team structure and shift strategy. I have also started to develop systems to automate certain parts of my role allowing for more time dedicated to building a high performing team. Without the support of my peers and my Manager (Sanderan), who has supported me every step of the journey. None of this would have been possible, so I am very grateful to be surrounded by such amazing people here at ResourceCo.
Tell us a little bit about yourself, how long have you been a part of the ResourceCo team? Started my working life in farming where I spent 12 years, moved into further processing in the food industry for 6 years. I have been with the ResourceCo team for 9 months. How would you explain your role at ResourceCo to someone you’ve just met? I’m the Operations Manager at a Landfill diversion plant where we recover resources to create a sustainable processed engineered fuel that goes into cement kilns and boilers as an alternative to fossil fuels such as coal and gas.
What’s something you’ve achieved recently at ResourceCo? I just completed the 4 day Emerging Leaders course. I cannot recommend this course enough for current and future leaders who wish to develop and/or sharpen their leadership skills. It was a great opportunity to network with like-minded individuals and learn more about the different businesses within ResourceCo. Once again I’m very thankful to have been given the opportunity to be a part of this course. Describe ResourceCo in 3 words. Sustainable, Fun, Family. Tell us something we don’t know about you. I was a freelance graphic designer / web designer for over 10 years with a large portfolio consisting of logos & branding, packaging design, product design, developing small to large e-commerce websites, application design / development. I also worked as an inhouse graphic designer for one of Australia’s largest tool store companies where I managed several brands. It still puts a smile on my face walking through the stores seeing my packaging design hanging up on the shelves.

ResourceCo – FULL CIRCLE – SUMMER 2023-24
What’s something you’ve achieved recently at Tyrecycle? It’s been fabulous to watch the driver reward program start to bring results from our drivers focusing on their behaviour behind the wheel. We’ve now got 40 of our 63 drivers in the top 25% of all drivers nationally using the E-Roads program – which is a significant pool of drivers! Describe Tyrecycle in 3 words. Dynamic, exciting, rewarding. Tell us something we don’t know about you. I’m a Junior state champion in bowhunter archery. Doing as much archery as I did as a teenager means I stretched my draw arm ligaments much longer. This means when I raise my arms out in front of me they are not even. I’m usually reminded of this when I forget to put weight clips on when I do bench press and tip the plates off the side of the bar.
How would you explain your role at ResourceCo to someone you’ve just met? I oversee making big waste things into little reusable things again. Whether you’re a new starter or being with ResourceCo for many years, what’s impressed you most about ResourceCo? Lots of can-do attitudes and people who have passion for the game. How have you challenged yourself at ResourceCo?
RYA N CRA I G Operations Manager, Brooklyn
Lots of opportunities at Brooklyn, to evolve the site into an industry leading standard we’re all proud to uphold. What’s something you’ve achieved recently at ResourceCo? Not much yet... Developing lots of plans and ideas to improve and be better. Describe ResourceCo in 3 words. Energetic, welcoming, doer’s. Tell us something we don’t know about you.

S A F E T Y S TA RT S WITH ME ‘Safety Starts With Me’ is ResourceCo’s safety awareness campaign, launched this October, national #SafeWorkMonth. No matter the workspace, whether it be behind the wheel of a loader, truck or excavator, operating plant or manual handling – everyone is committed to every day being a safe workday. ResourceCo’s Managing Director, Simon Brown says being safe comes in many forms, ‘Being healthy and safe means being free from physical and psychological harm. A safe and healthy workplace benefits everyone.’ “Our focus is to promote a positive safety culture and emphasise the importance of preventing accidents and incidents from happening. I cannot stress enough the importance of reporting hazards so that we can prevent accidents at all of our sites”, says Simon. As shown in our video, we’ve launched this campaign, our people have come together, and reaffirmed their role in committing to ‘safety starts with me’.

As an industry leader, ResourceCo is proud to connect with communities in a range of different ways. From industry engagement with peers, supporting community activities, charitable events, sporting clubs and environmental enhancement action – the role of ResourceCo within our community extends beyond resource recovery. In September, ResourceCo’s connecting with community program involved emerging business leaders from across South Australia who were provided with a first-hand glimpse into the world of resource recovery. The day also included tree-planted, supported by Greening Australia, and a 90-minute interview and Q&A session in ResourceCo’s Rose Park boardroom with ResourceCo’s Managing Director, Simon Brown. Director of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability, Sanj de Silva, says this type of engagement has multiple benefits. “Today we educated emerging leaders in the importance (and opportunity within) resource recovery, providing them with a new knowledge of what’s possible as they establish their careers. In years to come this knowledge will undoubtedly translate into sustainable resource recovery practices,” said Sanj. “We were also able to improve our landscape by planting hundreds of trees, followed by an in-depth discussion with ResourceCo’s Managing Director leaving these future decision makers inspired by Simon’s first-hand experience and insights”.

The Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia, Energy from Waste Conference was held in Sydney in November. Henry Anning, CEO of ResourceCo’s Energy business, presented and joined a panel of industry CEOs to discuss both the importance, and large potential, of energy from waste in Australia.
In November, Brad Lemmon, ResourceCo’s CEO of Recycling & Waste met with politicians from across the political landscape at Parliament House in Canberra. Several of Australia’s community leaders and decision makers learnt first-hand about ResourceCo’s capabilities and the crucial role resource recovery has within our economy.
As Australia’s largest tyre recycler, Tyrecycle frequently engages with industry promotion and advocacy. In recent months CEO of Tyrecycle, Jim Fairweather, presented at the Australian Flexible Pavement Association Conference and the Australasian Waste & Recycling Expo. Top of Jim’s points of discussion on both occasions was market development and demand for recycled material.
The ecologiQ Greener Infrastructure Conference in Melbourne brought together our ResourceCo and Tyrecycle teams who both had exhibitor booths demonstrating the high quality material we produce.

ResourceCo’s second annual Sustainability Report has been published, demonstrating once again very real benefits of the company’s commitment to maximizing the value of every resource. ResourceCo’s Director of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability, Sanj de Silva discusses the growing expectation for sustainable resource recovery practices and how material traceability is moving from a ‘nice-to-have’ to a ‘non-negotiable’. “The resource recovery sector forms a key component in the supply chain of several industries and plays a vital role in promoting and supporting sustainability and circular economy priorities for organisations”, said Sanj. As a growing number of clients are (rightly) seeking to learn more about what happens to their waste, the resource recovery sector forms a key component in the supply chain of several industries – playing a vital role in supporting landfill diversion and circular economy priorities for organisations. “This genuine interest in waste traceability and landfill minimisation is encouraging, but what we’re really looking forward to is the evolution of this interest into further action – when organisations go from asking questions for their sustainability reporting to committing to buy recycled material”, said Sanj. ResourceCo – FULL CIRCLE – SUMMER 2023-24
E S G B U S I N E SS OF T H E Y E A R ResourceCo is proud to have recently been awarded as the 2023 winner of ESG Business of the Year for Environmental/Social Outcomes at the South Australian Premier’s Business & Export Awards. Founded on the principle that there is no such thing as waste, ResourceCo prides itself on diverting as much material away from landfill as possible. In doing so, we manufacture high-quality products, and in many cases, our products have the added benefit of offsetting the use of fossil fuels to generate energy and/or reduce the need to mine virgin materials from quarries.
In accepting the award, Brad Lemmon, CEO of ResourceCo’s Recycling & Waste business pilar said everyone at ResourceCo has been an integral part of this recognition. “Every day our workforce of over 900 people, throughout Australia and Asia, contribute to our commitment to maximizing the value in all resources, this award acknowledges the positive outcomes associated with this amazing work’. As governments, companies and communities expect greater transparency on carbon footprints, the maximisation of resource recovery and sustainable developments, ResourceCo is well-placed to support our partners in driving a more sustainable future.
