The Creative Retail Awards have quickly become one of the most distinguished accolades within the retail industry. They recognise projects that have demonstrated the very highest level of innovation and excellence within retail. It has been a busy few weeks for the industry with the two leading UK retail display shows within just a couple of weeks of each other. SDEA members wowed visitors at these London based exhibitions.

At RetailEXPO, SDEA President Angus Morton awarded the best stand accolade to CJ Retail Solutions.

Despite very tough competition Barthelmess were voted the best in show at the inspirational display event, The VM & Display Show, whilst CJ Retail Solutions were crowned winners of the innovative and exciting RetailEXPO. Both stands captivated their relevant audiences with their highly imaginative displays, as well as their excellent presentation. They were finished to an exceptionally high standard, fully deserving to be winners of the Association’s coveted awards.

SDEA President, Angus Morton (of B Brown Display Materials) presented the award on the Barthelmess stand during The VM & Display Show.

SDEA NETWORKING EVENTS Members, retailers and SDEA staff celebrated at both the VM & Display Show and RetailEXPO with after-show drinks and food.

At RetailEXPO the evening was kindly sponsored by Graphica Display and RetailEXPO and was held at the exclusive Blagclub, a basement nightclub in Kensington.

At the VM & Display Show Networking Drinks, Graphica Display kindly sponsored the evening which proved a hit to thirsty exhibitors.

The event was held at Alphabet Bar, just a stone’s throw from the Business Design Centre where the exhibition was held.

MEMBER NEWS CSM RETAIL BRING JACK WILLS’ SPRING WINDOWS TO LIFE Jack Wills joined forced with CSM Retail to bring their 2019 Spring window concept to fruition. The lifestyle brand, established 20 years ago in the town of Salcombe, is now a global name in the retail industry with over 50 stores internationally and is widely acclaimed for its high-quality wardrobe classics, which symbolise a youthful spirit and epitomise British popular culture.

Following on from their previous collaboration with the brand, where CSM Retail helped promote their characteristic British identity in their Christmas window displays, the company were on hand to deliver their new Spring window concept, in what is one of the most important seasons for retailers globally.

This coastal lifestyle concept compliments the new collection and was produced and delivered for over 150 windows across the brand's portfolio in the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong and Singapore, including the flagship London store in the fashionable district of Soho.

Additionally, each store window had a bespoke layout to accommodate the unique store design. For stores who installed their own windows scheme, CSM Retail designed and provided step by step window installation guidelines.

Inspired by Sail Loft interiors and the fresh palette of Spring, the 'Break Away' window campaign showcased bespoke hand painted Jack Wills nautical flags, galvanised hanging systems and Rafa canvas banners. The nautical symbolism of the campaign contributes to the “feel good” factor of Spring, as it comes with positive connotations associated with the ocean, the beach and the relaxing features of sailing.

Feedback from the client was overwhelmingly positive: “The Spring windows look fantastic - thank you so much from all of us here at Jack Wills.”

MEMBER NEWS VIBRANT DISPLAYS HANDMADE IN BRITAIN FOR ICONIC NEW YORK EXHIBIT Stunning displays manufactured by Yorkshire-headquartered Leach have been installed at the iconic Brooklyn Museum in New York.

An inspiring feminist character, Frida Kahlo’s exhibition is rich in colour.

The vivid pink and blue lightboxes – which inject the wow factor before visitors have even stepped inside – have therefore been on the cards since discussions with the museum’s curators began back in November.

Leach is part of Chargeurs Group – a global manufacturing and services brand with a philanthropic Foundation committed to fostering intercultural dialogue and access to culture, health and education. The collaboration with Brooklyn Museum is therefore well-aligned with the organisation’s worldwide mission.

Anne Pasternak, the Shelby White and Leon Levy Director at Brooklyn Museum said: “We would like to thank Chargeurs for their generous support of this vital exhibition. The stunning Leach-designed lightboxes at the entry to our exhibition truly set the stage for a magnificent experience.”

Handmade more than 3,000 miles away at the design specialist’s Huddersfield HQ, two ultra-illuminated lightboxes – each 3.4m wide and 2.5m tall – now welcome visitors to the Museum’s Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving exhibit.

This is the largest US exhibition – dedicated to this celebrated Mexican artist – in 10 years, featuring paintings, photographs, film and personal artefacts from her home. Given the prestigious scale of this showcase, Leach has designed the displays to provide the public with an immersive visual experience, from the moment they arrive.

To achieve this ambitious art piece, installers opted to use Catenary Wire from historic supplier Ormiston Wire, in conjunction with the Gripple Dynamic 3, Dynamic 6, C-Clip and Express No. 1.

MEMBER NEWS PROPABILITY & FLOURISH TRADING DELIVER SPRING/SUMMER ACROSS FENWICK STORES A gloriously bright and happy scheme that brings a vintage English summer garden look and feel was delivered by Propability and sister company Flourish Trading collaborating with the VM team at Fenwick.

Propability created shapes and bushes to be featured in this characteristically British window scheme across nine Fenwick stores. In total Propability created MDF shapes for 50 pyramid trees, 152 different square and rectangular shapes, four large arches and 19 smaller arches and used sister company Flourish Trading to supply the faux foliage.

Each window was filled with high quality artificial moss, foliage and topiary which included approximately 10,000 panels of 100% botanically accurate UV stable Buxus Hedge Topiary.

Propability fitted the windows at Newcastle, Bond Street, Bracknell, Brent Cross and Kingston ensuring that the organic shapes and platforms were positioned in the best possible way to correctly display the mannequins and merchandise.

The juxtaposition of the topiary shapes alongside the floral patterns on the merchandise contrast beautifully with the hand painted graphic backdrop and floors to create a truly appealing visual treat.

The product was sourced specifically so that it would not fade or discolour in the window. In addition, almost 350 high quality Topiary Moss panels and 100 artificial Topiary Boxwood Balls in three different sizes (25cm, 40cm and 50cm) were also supplied by Flourish Trading to Propability for the build.

RETAILEXPO ATTRACTS RECORD LEVELS OF SENIOR RETAIL DECISION MAKERS and meet the people who are driving them. The speeches, whether it's a keynote speaker or it's the panels, is a great way to get the temperature of the industry and what's happening. That’s exciting, inspiring as it gets the juices flowing, and is thought provoking. It's a fantastic way to see and learn what's new, and also address some of niggling questions or challenges that we as retailers are facing.”

RetailEXPO, Europe’s leading retail trade show, drew record numbers of senior level retail decision makers to the 2019 expo, with 81% of attendees authorising or influencing buying decisions for retail solutions.

Insights from RetailEXPO’s post show report, which analysed data from the 12,676 across the two day show, held at London’s Olympia on 1st and 2nd May 2019, revealed that 75% of attendees came from Tier 1 or 2 sized retailers. Similarly, almost a third (32%) of retail visitors had store estates of 500 stores or more.

With a growing international audience, the show attracted visitors from 78 different countries globally across key retail sectors. A fifth of the show’s audience (19%) was comprised of fashion, footwear and jewellery retailers, while one in eight (12%) of the retail businesses visiting the show were from the grocery sector. Other key retail verticals attending the show included general merchandise (10%); pure plays (9%); DIY, home furnishing and garden retail businesses (7%); specialist retailers (7%); and health and beauty businesses (6%).

The reinvigorated conference programme proved a key drawn from RetailEXPO’s retail audiences, with over a third (34%) saying their primary reason for visiting was to gain industry knowledge and learning though talks and presentations. The new conference programme saw six streams of insightful content, presented by leading retailers including Lego, Virgin Holidays, Naked Wines, Mamas and Papas and Asda, with keynote sessions from Justin King, CBE and ex-CEO of Sainsbury’s, and Helen Dickinson, CEO at the British Retail Consortium.

Commenting on the role of RetailEXPO, Justin King said: “[RetailEXPO is an opportunity for] real people to meet with real people to discuss the change that's taking place. I think that's fantastic. We spend a lot of time talking about how everyone's going to go online and only use technology, and yet when we want to get together to discuss change, we do it real time, face-to -face. This is where you're going to find the ideas, the opportunities, to cope with whatever the particular change is that's facing your retail business.”
