MUNICIPIO DE GUAYAQUIL El Municipio de Guayaquil inauguró seis esculturas femeninas elaboradas en bronce por el artista ecuatoriano Edgar Cevallos, que están distribuidas en diferentes lugares como el Palacio Municipal, el Museo Nahim Isaís y la Gobernación del Guayas. Cada una de estas imponentes obras mide aproximadamente 2,20 metros de altura, y representan la fortaleza, generosidad, liderazgo, solidaridad, libertad y valor, en homenaje a la mujer guayaquileña.

MUNICIPALITY OF GUAYAQUIL The Municipality of Guayaquil inaugurated six female sculptures made in bronze by Ecuadorian artist Edgar Cevallos, which are distributed in different spots around the city such as the Municipal Palace, the Nahim Isaís Museum and the Governorate of Guayas. Each of these impressive pieces is approximately 2.20 meters high, and represent strength, generosity, leadership, solidarity, freedom and courage, as a tribute to the Guayaquil woman.

QUINTA HUASIPUNGO

En las instalaciones de la emblemática Quinta Huasipungo, ubicada en el corazón de Guápulo, se realizó una elegante recepción en la que VECO, Organización de Red Internacional dio a conocer su nuevo nombre: Rikolto. Esta ONG trabaja en las provincias de Esmeraldas, Manabí, Imbabura y Pichincha, apoyando a la profesionalización de organizaciones de productores y fortaleciendo la oferta de café y cacao de calidad. La bienvenida fue presidida por el Ministro de Agricultura y Gandería, el Economista Rubén Flores.

An elegant reception was held in the facilities of the emblematic Quinta Huasipungo, located in the heart of Guapulo. VECO, International Network Organization announced its new name: Rikolto. This NGO works in the provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabí, Imbabura and Pichincha, supporting the professionalization of organizations that strengthen the quality of coffee and cocoa. Economist Rubén Flores, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, was the host that welcomed important guests.

WORLD TRAVEL AWARDS 2017 Ecuador recibió 14 premios durante la gala de los World Travel Awards 2017 que se desarrolló en la Rivera Maya, México. Las tres ciudades principales del país y las Islas Galápagos sobresalieron como destinos líderes en Sudamérica en distintas categorías. Quito: reuniones y conferencias; Guayaquil: viajes de negocios; Cuenca: vacaciones; y Galápagos: playa, dejando el nombre del país en alto. Ecuador received 14 awards during the gala of the World Travel Awards 2017 that took place in the Rivera Maya, Mexico. The three main cities of the country and the Galapagos Islands stood out as leading destinations in South America in different categories. Quito: meetings and conferences; Guayaquil: business trips; Cuenca: holidays; and Galapagos: famous beaches.

ADVENTURE TRAVEL WORLD SUMMIT La Alcaldía de Quito, a través de Quito Turismo, participó en el evento más importante de turismo de aventura, el Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS) 2017, donde se promocionó al Distrito Metropolitano de Quito y las diversas actividades que ahí se pueden realizar. La ciudad de Salta en Argentina fue la sede de este gran encuentro del cual formaron parte alrededor de 850 empresas. The Quito Mayor’s Office, through Quito Turismo, participated in the most important event of adventure tourism, the Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS) 2017, that took place in the city of Salta, Argentina. Approximately 850 companies from all over the world were present. Representatives of the Metropolitan District of Quito promoted the city and the various activities that are offered to visitors.

FESTIVAL DEL CAFÉ Caficultores, baristas y catadores se dieron cita en el Festival del Café organizado por Café Vélez, Four World Coffee, con el apoyo de la Alcaldía de Quito. Este evento se realizó con el objetivo de promover el sector cafetero de Ecuador, así como los emprendimientos en esta área. Además, se ha previsto realizar múltiples actividades como torneos locales de arte latte, talleres, y la segunda edición del Campeonato Nacional Aeropress.

COFFEE FESTIVAL Coffee growers, baristas and tasters gathered at the Coffee Festival organized by Café Vélez Four World Coffee, with the support of the Mayor’s Office of Quito. This event was held to promote Ecuadorean coffee, as well as the entrepreneurships in this category. Multiple activities such as local art latte tournaments, workshops, and the second edition of the Aeropress National Championship will be held.

Dentro de los próximos cuatro años, Quito será la sede de importantes eventos y encuentros internacionales. Se espera alrededor de 21 eventos, entre los que destacan el XII Congreso Latinoamericano de Botánica, Encuentro de Geógrafos de América Latina, Pan-American League of Rheumatology Associations, Routes Americas y el Annual Meeting of the Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons.

Within the next four years, Quito will host important events and international meetings. BOLÍVAR THEATER Remians a referent of the cultural movement

o hace falta cerrar los ojos para imaginarse las grandes noches que los amantes del arte y la cultura disfrutaron en el emblemático Teatro Bolívar desde su inauguración en 1933 hasta la década de los 70s. Solo es necesario recorrer sus espacios, plasmados no solo de llamativos elementos decorativos, sino del recuerdo de riquísimos encuentros del público y los grandes artistas que alguna vez pisaron este escenario. Ubicado en la periferia inmediata de la que ha sido la plaza central de Quito desde su fundación española, el Teatro Bolívar se construyó sobre los terrenos que alguna vez ocuparon dos casas de propiedad de la familia Palacios, en la calle Espejo, entre Guayaquil y Flores, y que fueron derrocadas para su edificación. All we need to do is walk through its spaces, captured not only by striking decorative elements, but also by the memories of very fine encounters between guests and the great artists who once trod this stage. Located in the immediate periphery of what has been the central square of Quito since its Spanish foundation, the Bolívar Theater was built on the land once occupied by two houses owned by the Palacios family, on Espejo Street, between Guayaquil and Flores. The houses were overthrown to enable the Theater construction. Entrar a la sala principal del teatro quita el aliento. Un enorme escenario vestido con telones rojos se observa al frente. El fuerte color contrasta con los arcos dorados sostenidos por grandes columnas decoradas con pintura marmoleada. Sobre la platea provista de cientos de butacas originales recuperadas se aprecia el techo abovedado, que después del incendio desapareció, y que finalmente ha podido reconstruirse para devolverle a este lugar la excelente acústica con la que fue creado. Entering the main theater room takes your breath away. A huge stage dressed in red curtains is seen in the front. The strong color contrasts with the golden arches supported by large columns decorated with marbled paint. The stalls hold hundreds of original seats that where recovered. The vaulted ceiling that disappeared with the fire has finally been reconstructed, bringing back to this scenario the excellent acoustics with which it was created. A cinema screen remains in the upper part of the huge stage, as does the original wooden stage with its weights and ropes, and the bridge that served to operate it.

Juan Pío Montúfar, Marqués de Selva Alegre; Carlos Montúfar y Vicente Aguirre, próceres de la Independencia. Esta ascendencia familiar seguramente apuntaló en Urrutia su lucha por mejorar la calidad de vida de la gente pobre. Por ello, luego de enviudar, de heredar tierras y propiedades de su familia y esposo, otro aristócrata de la época, entregó su vida y dinero a los desposeídos a través de la Fundación Mariana de Jesús, que todavía existe y que fue la encargada de abrir el museo en 1989. Ella vivió en Europa hasta sus 20 años. Regresó a Ecuador en 1921 para casarse con Alfredo Escudero, descendiente de los Marqueses de Solanda, y vivieron en esta casa hasta su muerte. La casa data de 1830, tiene tres pisos, y se la mantiene tal y como su dueña la dejó. Los objetos que se exhiben provienen de herencias familiares y de los viajes que hizo a Europa. Es una casa típica de la época, con un patio y pileta centrales, pilastras de piedra en la planta baja y de madera en la alta. Abajo quedan las alacenas, los refrigeradores de la época. En una de ellas, en la que se guardaban granos, azúcar, etc., hoy se aloja la biografía de María Augusta Urrutia, las fotos de su familia y objetos personales. Entre los más preciados están los reconocimientos a su obra, sobre todo, la Medalla del Orden Nacional Al Mérito que recibió del Estado.

Aguirre, heroes of the Independence. This family ancestry certainly underpinned her struggle to improve the quality of life for the poor. After widowing she inherited lands and properties that belonged to her family and husband, who was another aristocrat of the time, and decided to devote her life and wealth to the dispossessed. She accomplished it through the Mariana de Jesus Foundation, which still exists and was in charge of opening this museum in 1989. Maria Augusta lived in Europe until she was 20 years old. She then returned to Ecuador in 1921 to marry Alfredo Escudero, descendant of the Marqueses de Solanda, and lived in this house until his death. The house was built in 1830, and until nowadays is maintained just as its owner left it. The objects exhibited come from family heirlooms and from the trips she made to Europe. It is a typical house of the time. It holds a central courtyard, a water fountain, stone pilasters on the ground floor and wooden on the upper floor. The basement still holds the pantries. One of them was used to store grains, sugar, etc., and today is where Maria Augusta Urrutia’s biography, photos of her family and personal items are kept. Among the most precious objects are those that acknowledge her work, among which the most relevant is the Medal of National Order to Merit that she received from the government. En la otra despensa, donde se mantenían los alimentos perecibles, están bateas y bandejas para amasar pan, y también se observan calefactores ingleses que funcionaban con leña y carbón. En el segundo piso está la cocina principal. Allí, moledoras de café, máquinas para hacer helado, molinos de piedra del siglo XVIII, moldes para hacer chocolate, pailas de bronce, y hasta una destiladora de licor para hacer mistelas, ubican al visitante en la época. El baño de María Augusta se mantiene intacto, tanto que hasta su perfume, Chanel No.5, reposa bajo el espejo. Las paredes tienen murales pintados a mano; a los costados resaltan dos antiguos vitrales venecianos. Las piezas de baño son inglesas, mientras que los mosaicos del piso y las baldosas de pared son belgas. El comedor tiene varias vajillas francesas del siglo XIX, artículos de mesa y cubertería de plata maciza. Una lámpara de bronce cuelga en el centro, y un juego de cristales de Baccarat se suma al despliegue de buen gusto de esta aristócrata. María Augusta fue mecenas del artista Víctor Mideros, pintor simbolista, de los mejores de América Latina, que tiene mucha obra expuesta en las iglesias de La Merced y El Carmen; y en casas particulares como esta, donde hay 89 cuadros de su autoría. Urrutia ayudaba a vestir a niños pobres y a los clérigos, y por ello convidó un cuarto de costura para el efecto. Allí hay máquinas de coser y sillas bajitas, adaptadas para que las costureras apoyen los pies en el suelo. En este ambiente hay un altar portátil que data de 1677, un par de bargueños del siglo

María Augusta was a patron of the artist Víctor Mideros, a symbolist painter, one of the best in Latin America, whose work is exhibited in the churches of La Merced and El Carmen, and in private homes like this one, where there are 89 of his most famous paintings. She provided dressing for the poor and the clerics, and in her house she had a room to manufacture the necessary clothing with sewing machines and small chairs, adapted for seamstresses to support their feet on the floor. In this setting there is a portable altar that dates from 1677, and a couple of antique bargueños of the XVIII century, which are wooden cabinets with many small drawers decorated with carvings, partly golden and partly bright colors. En la parte alta de la cama se muestran tres pinturas de Mideros que ella mandó a hacer para su habitación: los Arcángeles Miguel, Gabriel y Rafael; y se exhibe una cómoda de madera que todavía aloja su cepillo, peinillas y espejos. El Museo fue diseñado como un espacio para el descubrimiento y exploración del cacao como patrimonio intangible. Álbumes fotográficos que muestran la historia del Cacao en Ecuador nos trasladan a épocas de fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX, durante las cuales Ecuador produjo entre el 50% y 75% del total del mercado mundial de Cacao Fino, conocido también como la Pepa de Oro. No es en vano que el cacao es considerado un tesoro nacional. El visitante tendrá una completa experiencia sensorial mediante el olfato y tacto de las almendras de cacao que están colocadas en cajones de madera. En esta exposición conocerá los distintos lugares de donde proviene el cacao, así como los procesos por los que pasa antes de convertirse en chocolate. Su sabor y aroma van a variar según la región de la que proviene, y por la misma razón, tendrá características únicas. Es realmente asombroso admirar cómo en el interior de una vitrina de cristal se recreó el ecosistema y las condiciones climáticas en las que habita esta planta.

Réplicas arqueológicas como vasijas de barro y arcilla, y varios utensilios son exhibidos en una vitrina como muestra de la presencia del cacao en los tiempos precolombinos, y de la importancia que ha tenido en rituales y ceremonias culturales y religiosas. En una estantería se exhiben ingredientes 100% nacionales, y son los que se utilizan e incorporan en las barras de chocolate de República del Cacao: sal marina, pétalos de rosa, ají, uvilla, café, entre otros. The Museum was designed as a space to discover and explore one of the most valued intangible heritages we have: cocoa. Photo albums that tell the history of Cacao in Ecuador take us back to the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th, during which Ecuador provided between 50% and 75% of the total world market of Fine Cacao, also known as Pepa of Gold. No wonder cocoa is considered to be an Ecuadorean national treasure. A complete sensory experience is fulfilled through the smell and touch of cocoa almonds placed in wooden crates. Learning about the different places where cocoa comes from, as well as the processes through which it passes before it becomes chocolate, is inspiring. Flavor and aroma will vary depending on the region from which it comes, and for that it will also have unique characteristics. It is truly amazing to admire how the ecosystem and climate conditions in which this plant inhabits were recreated inside a glass showcase. A perfect representation of the typical farm where cocoa is grown and harvested will transport your imagination right to that spot, where you will be able to hear the relaxing noise made by leaves as they fall from the trees. Other elements in the museum, such as an artistic display of Pepa de Oro, a hammock and a bamboo cane provide with a touch of the coastal environment to the site. Archaeological replicas such as clay pots and various utensils are displayed as a sign of the presence of cocoa in pre-Columbian times, and the importance it had in indigenous rituals and cultural and religious ceremonies. Local ingredients that are incorporated into República del Cacao chocolate bars, such as sea salt, rose petals, chili, uvilla, coffee, are displayed. Also, thru an inside window you can admire the laboratory or kitchen where several chefs are preparing multiple delicious recipes. l Parque Arqueológico Cochasquí es un complejo de monumentos arqueológicos ubicado a 3.100 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Se encuentra en la parroquia Tocachi, provincia de Pichincha, a menos de una hora al norte de la ciudad de Quito por la carretera que lleva a Cayambe. Cuenta con 15 pirámides, 21 montículos funerarios, cuatro museos, 84 hectáreas de área arquitectónica preservada, y es hogar de un sinnúmero de llamas y llamingos de todas las edades. Varias investigaciones llevan a creer que Cochasquí, como otros centros arqueológicos, son fiel evidencia de la cultura Quitu-Cara, una cultura pre-incaica sumamente desarrollada que habitó la vasta región que va desde la costa hasta la Amazonía, y desde el norte de la provincia de Pichincha hasta el sur de Colombia. Cochasquí significa “agua de la mitad”; cochas: agua / lago, y qui: sitio de la mitad. El parque cuenta con una privilegiada ubicación, quien lo visita en un día despejado admira la vista panorámica de un majestuoso paisaje que incluye cerros y nevados como el Cayambe, Pichincha y el Cerro Puntas. Por la noche el espectáculo lo pone el cielo estrellado, el mismo que fue observado por nuestros ancestros que desde allí estudiaron las estrellas, los astros y las constelaciones, plasmándolos en la tierra del lugar y creando calendarios lunares y solares. Este energético lugar es el punto más alto por donde pasa la línea ecuatorial, y es conocido como uno de los puntos astronómicos más importantes del país y del mundo. Cochasqui means “water of the half site”, cochas: water/lake, and qui: half site. The park has a privileged location. On clear days visitors admire the panoramic view of a majestic landscape that includes hills and snowy peaks like Cayambe, Pichincha and Cerro Puntas. At night the spectacle is set by the starry sky, the same one observed by our ancestors who, from that spot studied the stars and constellations, drawing them in that dust, and creating lunar and solar calendars. This energetic place is the highest point where the equatorial line passes, and is known as one of the most important astronomical points of the country and the world. But these are not the only attractions of Cochasquí. The surroundings of the park are also suitable for adventure sports, bird watching, or hiking to the Mojanda lagoon. In addition, you can enjoy tasting traditional dishes like corn with cheese, the typical seco de chivo, corn tortillas and traditional drinks. As if that was not enough, aside from all the cultural-historical experience at this place, the Government of Pichincha has adapted it with accommodation facilities in very good condition and with constant maintenance. There are six cabins with three beds (one double and one bunk), bathrooms with showers and hot water, independent cabins with grill, electricity and Wi-Fi. For the more adventurous, there is a camping and campfire area adapted for this purpose, located in the open area in front of the cabins. Basic food, firewood and charcoal are sold at the reception. It has closed parking, where a car collects and transports visitor’s luggage and groceries.

Small statues capture the timely growth and evolution of Guayaquil, from its beginnings until it becomes the city that it is today, through fifteen different and very elaborated scenes (dioramas). These dioramas are unique in the world. They combine the art of miniature creations with the cinematographic effects that allow visualizing scenes with depth of field. It contains human figures in the foreground of up to 25cm and utensils that are 4cm high.

Each station is identified with a name and relates the challenges that the Pearl of the Pacific -as Guayaquil is also known-, encountered through time. Its beginnings, the struggles against natives, then the looting of pirates, plagues, revolutions, and even the great fire in the early twentieth century when the city almost disappeared. These are the dioramas that will tell you the history of Guayaquil:

Miniature history

Origins of our ancestors: the birth of the city, back in the years 6,000 to 3,500 before the current period. Here you can see the jungle that existed along the Guayas River and learn about the lifestyle of natives. Foundations: begins with the attack of the natives that lived in the area, runs through all the foundations that the city had, and ends with the final and definitive foundation of Santiago de Guayaquil in 1537. Pacific Shipyard: in this section we encounter Guayaquil as the first naval shipyard of the Pacific Ocean, as the city was known from 1547 to 1741. Pirates in the Gulf: it is a recreation of the attacks of the pirates in the Gulf of Guayaquil, and how in six occasions the city was sacked. Guayaquileños had to face the pirates during a long period. Old town and new town: a tour through the period from 1730 to 1769, when the so-called Old Town was literally moved from one place to another, through swamps and bridges to a safer place, in the foothills of what we now know as Cerro Santa Ana. The Glorious Aurora: represents the denominated Vulcan forges, in which the Independence of Guayaquil was planned. Guayaquil for the Homeland: shows the contribution of men, weapons and supplies given by the Independent Republic of Guayaquil as support to secure the defeats in battles prior to Quito’s independence. The Republic of Ecuador: recreates the agreement between liberators Bolivar and San Martin to liberate the city. The March Revolution: the overthrow of President Juan José Flores after his decision to perpetuate himself in the presidency.

Más Ciudad: destacan obras nuevas como el aeropuerto, el terminal terrestre y más. Marcha Blanca: la muestra finaliza con la representación de una manifestación realizada por la ciudadanía para exigir seguridad. No se requiere de un guía para visitar el museo, pues cada estación cuenta con botones que activan audio en español o inglés, y juego de luces que iluminan la escena mientras avanza la grabación. Estos elementos multimedia, además de ser un apoyo para el turista, hacen que la visita sea más dinámica y entretenida. El recorrido dura aproximadamente 45 minutos.

Guayaquil Lives for You: in this scene the museum covers the great urban works of today, like the Malecón 2000. More City: new buildings such as the airport, the bus terminal and many more stand out. White March: the tour ends with the representation of a demonstration carried out by the citizens to demand security in the city.

No guide is required for this visit to the museum as each station has audio devices that tell the story in Spanish or English, accompanied by a set of lights that illuminate each scene as the recording progresses. The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.

About the author of the miniatures

La obra realizada por el escultor Edgar Cevallos Rosales ofrece un mundo de fantasía que expone una realidad ancestral e histórica. Edgar tardó seis años en elaborar las pequeñas esculturas, de las cuales hizo prototipos en diferentes tamaños y los articuló con alambres interiores para dar movimiento a cada uno.

The work done by the sculptor Edgar Cevallos Rosales offers a world of fantasy that exposes an ancestral and historical reality. It took Edgar six years to create the small sculptures, of which he made prototypes in different sizes and articulated them with inner wires to give movement to each one.

Para elaborar las figuras se utilizó masilla Mustang, pintura al óleo, telas, cueros y gamuzas; mientras que para las escenografías se realizó una rigurosa investigación de la arquitectura de Guayaquil a través de la historia. Arte, oficio e investigación plasman la historia de la ciudad en este maravilloso museo.

For the figures, Edgar used mustang putty, oil painting, fabrics, leathers and chamois. A rigorous investigation of Guayaquil´s architecture throughout history was made in order to design the scenography. Art, craft and research capture the history of the city in this wonderful museum.

The Pearl of the Pacific offers a musical parade illuminated with Led lights, titled Guayaquil is my Destination at Christmas. Characters such as Santa Claus, reindeers and snowmen are represented in a show filled with colorful lights that parade thru the Boulevard 9 de Octubre on floats, transforming the coastal avenue in a wintery environment. Princesses, fairies and angels also participate in this parade were characters come to life in a very joyful evening. The Festival of Lights is a breathtaking spectacle where thousands of candles are lit in homage to the Virgin Morenica del Rosario. Another must see event is the Child Pass, where Jesus, the Virgin Mary and Joseph are characterized. These events congregate hundreds of tourists.

El 24 de diciembre, en diferentes horarios según la Parroquia, se celebran solemnes Eucaristías que son amenizadas con cánticos, panderetas y guitarras para dar la bienvenida a Jesucristo que acaba de nacer. Esta ceremonia se la conoce como la Misa del Gallo. Las personas se reúnen para disfrutar de elegantes e íntimas cenas navideñas en las que no puede faltar el tradicional pavo que previamente fue adobado y horneado. Los niños esperan ansiosamente abrir sus regalos que se encuentran bajo el árbol, y es que el calor de la navidad el que envuelve a todos en un ambiente de unidad, amor y fraternidad.

It is one of the most important and popular events in the country, known as the Flower and Fruit Festival, that in 2009 was declared as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ecuador.

Esta fiesta se realiza desde 1951 como símbolo de esperanza, optimismo, fortaleza y unidad de los ambateños, quienes salieron adelante después del devastador terremoto que destruyó gran parte de la urbe en 1949.

La bendición del Pan, Flores y Frutas se realiza durante una solemne misa en el atrio de la Catedral, en acción de gracias por la abundancia de frutos que provee la tierra a los habitantes de Ambato. Por otra parte, el Desfile de la Confraternidad es una célebre manifestación cultural y artística, un espectáculo en el que estudiantes de varios planteles educativos visten llamativos disfraces y galas para presentarse en comparsas, en las que interpretan divertidos roles. Los acompaña la reina de Ambato junto a reinas de belleza de distintas localidades del país, quienes van sobre majestuosos carros alegóricos decorados con flores y frutas, saludando atentamente al público. El festejo transcurre en las principales calles del Centro Histórico. “El postre lo enviaremos a la habitación”, nos dice Isabel Hurtado de Valdiviezo, propietaria de Hacienda Abraspungo, “Es tarde y es mejor que descansen”. Sonríe Isabel, mientras nos acompaña a la habitación, o debería decir, a los aposentos de un monarca en el exilio. Qué maravilla! La interminable cama cubierta de pétalos de rosas y el oceánico jacuzzi invitaban al descanso, mientras el postre, un pudin incomparable elaborado artesanalmente, utilizando el mundialmente famoso “Cacao Arriba” en tres variaciones, un elixir que pondría a cualquiera en éxtasis. Disfrutando un humeante tazón de café, mientras el aire de la mañana transporta el mágico aroma hacia una docena de gente que acopia todo tipo de equipos en absoluto orden, Isabel nos dice, “tienen mucha suerte. Hoy sale de Abraspungo la expedición al Altar”. “Pero aun no quiero casarme!” contesto, y riendo de muy buena gana Isabel me explica que se trata de la montaña más bella y aislada de Ecuador, y también la única en el mundo, donde un Tzunami de altura había ocurrido.

“Dessert will be sent to your room,” says Isabel Hurtado de Valdiviezo, owner of Hacienda Abraspungo. “It’s late and you better rest.” Isabel smiles while accompanying us to the room, or should I say, to what seems like the chambers of a monarch in exile. Wonderful! The endless bed covered with rose petals and the oceanic Jacuzzi treat us to unthinkable rest and relaxation. Dessert arrives, an indescribable handcrafted pudding in three variations, which main ingredient is the world famous “Cacao Arriba”. An elixir that provokes ecstasy sensations from the first bite. Enjoying a steaming bowl of coffee, while the morning air transports the magical aroma to a dozen people who collect all sorts of equipment in absolute order, Isabel tells us, “You are very lucky. The expedition to the Altar departs from Abraspungo today. “But I do not want to get married yet!” I replied. Laughing, she explained that the Altar is the most beautiful and isolated mountain in Ecuador, and is also the only one in the world where a highland tsunami had occurred. Un Tzunami de altura… y ¿cómo es esto? Isabel nos narra cómo una parte de uno de los siete picos se precipitó súbitamente sobre el lago que está en la base, provocando una gigantesca ola que se llevó consigo gran parte de un bosque. Increíble, esto definitivamente hay que verlo! Recogimos algo de ropa y subimos a uno de los equipadísimos vehículos 4x4 para hacer un trayecto que parecía sacado de un libro de aventuras. Llegamos más allá de donde los caminos terminan, donde el guía informó que “de aquí en mula”! Con el lodo hasta la panza avanzaron las acémilas por un ramal imposible transportando a expedicionarios de varias partes del mundo, todos relacionados con una de las más importantes revistas especializadas, quienes insistieron en que no tomemos fotografías. Decidimos continuar con nuestro viaje hacia el sur para tomar el mítico tren de La Nariz del Diablo. Llegamos a Alausí a tiempo de tomar el tren de medio día. Embarcamos, y de inmediato nos rodeó el impresionante panorama que convierte a esta experiencia en un recuerdo imborrable. Definitivamente hay que vivirlo para entenderlo, pues increíblemente este moderno tren baja zigzagueando por los flancos de la montaña! Mientras una muy civilizada explicación es impartida, divago en el pasado y pienso cómo habría sido la construcción de la vía para esta peligrosa travesía. La explicación del guía lo narra todo, y al escucharla va aumentando nuestro interés por conocer más de este maravilloso país.

causing a gigantic wave that covered and destroyed a large part of a forest. Incredible, this definitely has to be seen! We gathered some clothes and got on a well-equipped 4x4 vehicle to embark on a journey that sounded like one in an adventure book. We drove beyond where the paths ended, reaching the point where the guide informed us “from here onworlds on mule back”! The expedition included people from all ends of the woods. With mood to their bellies the mules ride thru impossible paths. Our new friends where on a mission, they had been assigned by one of the most prestigious magazines, specialized on this matters, and insisted that we do not take photographs. So we parted. Our decision was to continue our journey southward, where we would take the mythical train of La Nariz del Diablo. We arrived in Alausí right on time to take the noon train and where immediately surrounded by such impressive scenery that made that turn this experience into an unforgettable one. We knew then that this is something you definitely have to live to understand. This incredibly modern train zigzags down the mountain flanks! While listening to a very civilized explanation imparted by our guide, I dibagate about the past and tried to imagine the complications that accompanied the construction process of these tracks thru such a dangerous crossing. The thorough explanation we enjoyed increased our interest in learning more about this wonderful country that we, as Ecuadoreans, truly love.

The great work carried out by the Galapagos National Park in terms of conservation of this Natural Heritage is, and should be, an example worthy of admiration from each and every one who inhabits this wonderful planet.

Para algunos son las hermosas playas que delimitan esta tierra de fuego y sus aguas cristalinas los factores que llaman la atención de turistas al visitar esta tierra ecuatorial. Para otros, incluyéndome, es la revolucionaria teoría evolutiva de Charles Darwin y las increíbles especies en las que se basó para validarla.

so that in many cases, to follow the rules of the National Park -not to touch them- it is necessary to stand aside or leave the walking trail, because these curious animals do not understand that the human beings are just that, despite responsible tourism. Certain species are endemic to the archipelago and some only to certain islands. This means that they are not found anywhere else in the world. The Galapagos Islands are one of the only places in the world where the opportunity to meet all kinds of animals, so different and in such varied ecosystems, can happen in one single day. The wonderful thing about this fauna richness is that it´s a constant in this paradise, not only when walking the islands, but also when immersing in its wonderful waters. This is a list of animals I saw in just one day, taking a tour to the central islands of Santa Fe and Plazas Sur.

Sea Lions

Las Islas Galápagos son uno de los únicos lugares del planeta donde la oportunidad de encontrarse con todo tipo de animales tan distintos, y en ecosistemas tan variados, se

One of the most common animals at the islands. Its playful way of being makes them so captivating that it´s impossible not to mention them. Sea lions are mammals that live in almost every island, and differ from seals by their fins and the mobility they acquire with them to lean and walk on stones and sand. They are excellent swimmers; they feed on fish and octopuses, and it´s a delight to see them swim when snorkeling. They are very curious and extremely fast. It is not uncommon to be greeted by them at ports, and with a little luck see their offspring very close, as was the case on our arrival at Plazas Sur. It is important to keep distance from females if they are nearby, they can be very aggressive to protect their babies.

Land iguanas

For thousands of years land iguanas arrived to the islands on floating vegetation, and evolved into a new species: the marine iguana. However, in Plazas Sur Island, it is

A continuación, y para demostrar lo descrito anteriormente, detallo una lista de animales que vi en tan solo un día, tomando un tour por las islas centrales de Santa Fe y Plazas Sur.

Lobo Marino

Es uno de los animales más comunes de las islas, y su juguetona forma de ser los hace tan cautivadores que es imposible no mencionarlos. Los lobos marinos son mamíferos que viven en casi todas las islas, y se diferencian de las focas por sus aletas y la movilidad que adquieren con ellas para apoyarse y caminar sobre piedras y arena. Son excelentes nadadores, se alimentan de peces y pulpos, y es realmente un deleite verlos moverse en el agua cuando se hace snorkel. Son muy curiosos y extremadamente veloces. No es raro ser recibido por ellos en los puertos de desembarque, y si hay suerte se puede ver a sus crías muy cerca, como fue el caso en nuestra llegada a Plazas Sur. Eso sí, es muy importante mantener la distancia cuando una hembra está cerca, ya que pueden ser muy agresivas por proteger a sus bebés.

Iguana Terrestre de Plazas

Las iguanas terrestres llegaron a las islas sobre vegetación flotante durante miles de años, y evolucionaron en una nueva especie: la iguana marina. Sin embargo, en la isla Plazas Sur, es común encontrar en mayor cantidad a la especie terrestre. Tiene una coloración amarilla-anaranjada, y es más pequeña que las que se encuentran en otras islas como Seymour Norte o Santa Fe. Se alimentan de sesuvium y cactus, y es fácil encontrarlas reptando por piedras, trepadas en un cactus, o en huecos que usan como madrigueras. Un dato curioso de esta isla y esta especie, es que al tener relación directa con la iguana marina y terrestre, se han encontrado variedades híbridas que comparten características de la una y la otra, aunque no son tan comunes. Un ejemplo sería una iguana con el color anaranjado de la terrestre y la cola plana de la marina. La iguana en la imagen es una iguana terrestre común.

common to find terrestrial species in greater quantity. They have a yellow-orange coloration, and are smaller than those found in other islands, such as Seymour Norte or Santa Fe. They feed on sesuvium and cactus, and it is easy to find them crawling on rocks, climbing on cactuses or hollows used as burrows. A curious fact about this island and this specie is that having a direct relation with the marine and terrestrial iguana, hybrid varieties that share characteristics of one and the other have been found, although they are not so common. An example would be an iguana with the orange color of the terrestrial and the flat tail of the marine. The iguana in the picture is a common land iguana.

Galapagos owl

Another wonderful inhabitant of the islands is the Galapagos Owl. This animal, unlike the owls of the world, is the only one that hunts during the day. The largest population of this specimen is found on the northern island of Genovesa, the island of birds, because they feed on smaller ones such as petrels and finches. It is not easy to see them because its yellowish brown color is the perfect camouflage among the dry vegetation and the volcanic stones of the islands. Undoubtedly the most important finding in our visit to Plazas Sur, and perhaps the whole trip, was to meet an owl among the vegetation of this central island, where it is extremely rare to see them, and it was very close!

Snorkel in Santa Fe

Snorkeling in the amazing waters of Galapagos is undoubtedly one activity that should not be missed. The richness of nutrients and species that flow within the marine currents that collide in this point of the Pacific Ocean, guarantees that there is no concern for scarcity. Swimming with fish of all colors, turtles, sea lions, mantas and even sharks, is something that does not happen when you live on the beaches of the continent. Encountering these species is not difficult in Galapagos, and you do not even need to go deep sea diving to see them. We almost forgot about the wonders of Santa Fe Island, known for its large land iguanas and giant cactuses, when we submerged in the crystalline waters with our snorkel masks. The amount of animals that swam around us made of this activity an unforgettable memory.

Lechuza de Galápagos

Otro maravilloso habitante de las islas es la Lechuza de Galápagos. Este animal, a diferencia de las lechuzas del mundo, es la única que caza durante el día. La población más grande de este espécimen se encuentra en la isla del norte Genovesa, la isla de las aves, y está ahí porque se alimenta de otras pequeñas aves como petreles y pinzones. No es fácil avistarlas porque su color café amarillento es el perfecto camuflaje entre la vegetación seca y las piedras volcánicas de las islas. Sin duda el hallazgo más importante en nuestra visita a Plazas Sur, y tal vez del viaje entero, fue encontrarnos con una lechuza entre la vegetación de esta isla central donde es sumamente raro verlas, ¡y vaya qué estuvo cerca!

Snorkel en Santa Fe

Hacer snorkel en las azules aguas de Galápagos es sin duda de las actividades que no se debe dejar de hacer. La riqueza de nutrientes y especies que traen las corrientes marinas que chocan en este punto del Océano Pacífico, hace que las distintas variedades que viven en estas aguas no tengan preocupación por la escasez. Nadar con peces de todos los colores, tortugas, lobos marinos, mantas y hasta tiburones, es algo que no sucede cuando se vive en las playas del continente. En Galápagos, encontrarse con una de estas especies no es difícil, tampoco es necesario hacer buceo de aguas profundas para verlas. Las maravillas de isla Santa Fe, conocida por sus grandes iguanas terrestres y sus gigantes cactus centenarios, se vio un poco opacada cuando nos sumergimos en sus cristalinas aguas con nuestras máscaras, pues la cantidad de animales que nadaron alrededor nuestro hizo que esta actividad sea un recuerdo inolvidable.
