El mes pasado fue un momento emocionante para Guatemala: ganó su primera medalla olímpica desde que comenzó a participar en los juegos en 1952 en Helsinki. ¡Erick Barrondo ganó la medalla de plata en la Marcha Atlética masculina de 20km! ¡En Qué Pasa estamos orgullosos de presentar la imagen de Erick en nuestra portada en celebración de este momento triunfal para él y para Guatemala! Durante la cita, se determinó que yo necesitaba un examen especial. Yo no tenía que hacer otra cita con un técnico. El doctor lo hizo - ahí mismo, en el momento, en su oficina. Esta prueba en los EEUU por lo general cuesta entre US$1,500 y US$2,500, dependiendo del centro médico. La cuenta de todo: primera visita del paciente y la consulta sumaron a Q500... Last month was an exciting time for Guatemala: it won its first Olympic medal since it began participating in the games in 1952 in Helsinki. He was thorough; he listened to all my questions and concerns; he explained my condition and treatment options in detail; he did not rush through my visit. During my appointment, it was assessed that I needed a special test. I didn’t have to make another appointment with a tech. The doctor did it – right there, right then, in his office. This test in the States usually costs between US$1,500 and US$2,500, depending on the facility. The bill for everything: first time patient visit and test came to Q500… Guatemala is an excellent option for those seeking outstanding health care at affordable prices. Alfredo García Gil Por Víctor Sales

“Mi nombre es Alfredo José García Gil. Soy pintor y me dedico a la pintura. Básicamente es de lo que vivo y es donde he logrado llegar a trascender un poquito en esta vida.” Cuéntenos ¿de dónde viene usted? Yo nací en un barrio aquí muy cerca de Jocotenango que se llama El Chajón, en La Antigua Guatemala, que queda cerca del parque San Sebastián, pero desde que tenía seis o siete años de edad nos venimos con mi familia a vivir acá a Jocotenango. Si hago cuentas, tengo más de 40 años de vivir acá en Jocotenango. Lo curioso es que siendo antigüeño me siento más jocoteco que antigüeño por vivir aquí tantos años. ¿Cómo empezó usted a pintar? Fíjese usted, que eso se remonta más allá de mis recuerdos, porque yo, desde que tengo memoria, lo tengo asociado con los dibujos. A veces conseguía un pedacito de yeso que era lo que uno utilizaba en la escuela hace muchos años y en las paredes hacía mis dibujitos, y desde ahí fue creciendo ésta situación. Como que yo mismo me convencí o las circunstancias me convencieron de que era un buen camino a seguir, que me convenía quedarme de pintor y así fue como empecé a meterme en este “lío” de los pintores. ¿Cuándo comienza usted a vivir eso, y de eso? Eso se da de una forma bien curiosa, ya que yo me gradué de Maestro de Educación Primaria Urbana, y mi mamá decía que ahí tenía la oportunidad de trabajar y de ser útil a la sociedad; me acuerdo perfectamente bien de sus palabras. Yo tenía la ventaja – digámoslo así – de poder trabajar de maestro. Y así lo hice; trabajé un tiempo, pero siempre dentro de mí estaba la vocación de la pintura, el deseo de pintar. De esa manera empecé a trabajar, compartiendo mi tiempo entre dando clases y pintando, pero lo hacia de una manera informal, ya que no me sentía presionado para dedicarme a pintar, hasta que contraje compromisos fuertes: matrimonio y formar una familia. Ahí fue cuando tuve que tomar una decisión determinante: me quedaba de maestro o me quedaba de pintor, y la decisión que tomara iba a ser la que tenía que mantener a lo largo de mi vida. Me tiré a pintor, pero fue cuando ya tenía mis hijos. Al principio me daba un poquito de vergüenza que me fueran a ver en la calle pintando o que me vieran con mis cuadros de un lado para otro, ofreciéndolos, como que eso me fuera a causar algo en mi personalidad o en mi vida. Pero cuando mis hijos nacieron, me dije que por ellos yo debo de quitarme todo eso, liberarme y dedicarme a pintar, y me alegra mucho haberlo hecho.

“My name is Alfredo José García Gil. I’m a painter and that’s what I dedicate my life to. Basically, it’s what I live and breathe and where I’ve managed to transcend this life a little.” Tell us, where are you from? I was born in a neighborhood here in La Antigua - El Chajón – which is very close to Jocotenango – near San Sebastian Park. But when I was six or seven years old my family moved to Jocotenango. If I actually do the numbers, I’ve been living in Jocotenango for more than 40 years. The funny thing is that, being an Antigüeño, I feel more Jocoteco than Antigüeño after living there for so many years. How did you get started painting? Look, that goes way back, because from my very earliest memories, I remember drawing. Sometimes I’d get a little piece of chalk – that was what you used in school years ago – and do drawings

on the walls, and from there it grew. I convinced myself, or circumstances convinced me, that it was a good way forward, so it suited me to stay a painter and that was how I started getting into this “mess” of being a painter. When did you begin to live as a painter, as well as make a living from it? That’s a very interesting thing, since I graduated as an urban elementary school teacher, and my mother said it was an opportunity to work and to be useful to society; I remember her words perfectly. I had the advantage – let’s call it that – of working as a teacher. And I did so; I worked a while, but my vocation of painting, the desire to paint, was always inside me. So I

26 started working, dividing my time between teaching and painting, but I did it informally because I did not feel pressured to dedicate myself entirely to painting until I made some strong commitments: marriage and starting a family. That’s when I had to make a critical decision: be a teacher or be a painter, and the decision I made would be what I had to stick to throughout my life. I threw myself into paining, but it was after my kids had been born. At first I was a little embarrassed to be seen painting on the street or carrying my pictures from one place to another and offering them for sale. But when my children were born, I told myself that I had to let all of that go and devote myself to painting, and I am very glad I did. What are the themes of your work? What is it that drives you to paint? One of my biggest open secrets, which I’ve said many times, is that most of my paintings aren’t from my experiences, but are the experiences of others. Many stories come up in conversations. Many

people, in their great honesty and great friendship, give me ideas from what has happened to them or their acquaintances, which also gives me the inspiration to make another painting. It’s an exchange of ideas and I’m lucky that they can be painted on a canvas. The pictures of drunks, those themes about bars, prostitutes – sometimes happy, sometimes angry, or tipsy, or simply living their lives – and the same with the people who visit them, all these things make a lot of sense to me. I started to paint them and kept doing it over and over again; there was a moment that everything simply fell into place and stayed there, which pushed me onward and let me move ahead. So as a way of thanks, I have a sign at the entrance of my house that says “Casa de Citas, un encuentro con el arte” [roughly, “Bordello, an encounter with art”] as a kind of recognition to all those people who don’t know that I’m living from them and their bad or good lives. It’s like a little tribute, a tribute to all these people.

“La mayoría de mis cuadros no son experiencias mías, sino que son experiencias ajenas… Muchas personas, entre su gran franqueza y su gran amistad, me dan ideas.” “Most of my paintings aren’t from my experiences, but are the experiences of others… Many people, in their great honesty and great friendship, give me ideas.” ¿Cuáles son los temas de su obra? ¿Qué es lo que le impulsa a pintar? Uno de mis mayores secretos a voces, porque lo he dicho muchas veces, es que la mayoría de mis cuadros no son experiencias mías, sino que son experiencias ajenas. Muchas historias surgen de conversaciones. Muchas personas, entre su gran franqueza y su gran amistad, me dan ideas de lo que les ha pasado a ellos o a sus conocidos, lo cual me da también un gran impulso a hacer otro cuadro. Es un intercambio de ideas en el cual yo tengo la suerte de poderlas pintar en un lienzo. Los cuadros de bolos [borrachos], esos temas de cantinas, prostitutas – algunas veces contentas, otras enojadas, o tomadas [embriagadas], o bien

simplemente viviendo su vida, y los seres que las visitaban también de la misma manera, todas estas cosas para mi tienen mucho sentido. Al empezarlas a pintar y seguir dándole al mismo clavo con ese martillo y dándole a lo mismo, hubo un momento en que ocuparon su lugar y quedaron ahí, los cuales me impulsaron y me sacaron muy adelante. Así que como a manera de agradecimiento, tengo un cartel en la entrada de mi casa, que dice “Casa de Citas, un encuentro con el arte” como una especie de reconocimiento a todas esas personas que no saben que yo estoy viviendo de ellas, y de su mala o buena vida. Es como un pequeño tributo, un pequeño homenaje a todas estas personas.

28 ¿Cómo empezó esa fascinación por esas escenas tan interesantes? Yo siempre he querido ser muy honesto con mi trabajo, y yo sentía que en esos temas había muchas historias, habían muchas cosas que pasaban desapercibidas por ser tan comunes. A mi me llamaba mucho la atención esas escenas, porque yo miraba a estas personas no sufriendo, sino viviendo su vida, lo cual es bastante contradictorio porque en determinado momento de sus vidas se miran contentos, se miraban felices, y yo me decía que esa es su forma de vivir, la que la vida les ha dado. De ahí surge toda esta situación con la que me empiezo a involucrar con este tipo de pinturas, porque yo miraba lo que era vivir y era sentir y era sentirse vivos.

¿Qué cosas ha vivido usted que, sin la pintura, usted no hubiera podido realizar? Yo siento que el mayor beneficio que he tenido en mi vida ha sido conocer una gran cantidad de personas. Yo realmente sí he sentido que mi vida se ha enriquecido, mi forma de pensar ha cambiado, en base a esa cantidad de personas que he conocido. Eso ha sido lo mejor que he cosechado en todos estos años, aparte de la situación de vida que he tenido y reconocimientos que me han dado. Pero básicamente lo más importante que le he sacado es que he conocido muchas personas interesantes y honestas quienes me han dicho las cosas claras cuando han sido buenas y cuando han sido malas, y lo he apreciado igual. Esto ha sido mi mayor logro, ha sido el pago que me ha hecho el ser pintor.

Para usted, ¿qué es lo más interesante de vivir en este valle? Lo más interesante, para mí, es la cantidad de personas de otros lugares, ya sea de nuestro país o muchos extranjeros que han venido a enriquecer a La Antigua. Yo siento que eso es lo más importante. Yo soy muy fanático de visitar el interior del país, pero puedo ver que su esencia es la misma, es una población muy homogénea, porque todos son guatemaltecos, mientras que si se va a La Antigua cualquier día, se puede encontrar una cantidad de personas increíbles, que lo hacen ser a uno más abierto; ya no quedarse ligado a sus propias tradiciones, sino que estar uno más abierto a nuevas experiencias, conceptos e ideas. Eso es lo que hace para mí muy interesante vivir en este lugar.

How did this fascination with these very interesting scenes start? I’ve always wanted to be very honest with my work, and I felt that these themes had many stories, that there were many things that went unnoticed because they were so common. I became very curious about those scenes, because I watched these people, not suffering but living their lives, which is very contradictory because at certain points in their lives they look content, they looked happy, and I told myself that that’s their way of living, what life has given them. From this comes this whole situation that I start to get involved with, with this type of painting, because I saw that it was living and feeling and feeling alive.

“[In] La Antigua on any day, you can find a lot of incredible people; this makes you more open – you’re no longer bound to your own traditions, but you’re more open to new experiences, concepts, and ideas.”

What have you experienced that you wouldn’t have without painting? I feel that the greatest benefit I’ve had in my life is to know a lot of people. I do indeed feel that my life has been enriched, my way of thinking has changed, because of the amount of people I’ve met. That has been the best thing that I’ve gained over the years, aside from the living situation I’ve had and the recognitions that I’ve gotten. But basically the most important thing is that I’ve met many interesting and honest people who have been straight shooters – they’ve told me the truth when things have been good as well as when things have been bad, and I have appreciated both. This has been my greatest achievement; it’s been the payment which has made me a painter.

For you, what’s the most interesting thing about living in this valley? The most interesting thing for me is the amount of people from other places, whether they’re from our country or the many foreigners who have come to enrich La Antigua. I think that this is the most important thing. I’m a big fan of visiting the countryside, but I can see that the essence is the same; it’s a very homogeneous population, because they are all Guatemalans. But if you go to La Antigua on any day, you can find a lot of incredible people; this makes you more open – you’re no longer bound to your own traditions, but you’re more open to new experiences, concepts, and ideas. For me, that’s what makes life interesting here.

¿Hay algo que le cambiaría a La Antigua? A la gran... probablemente me metería al costal de los cuentazos porque me da mucha pena que hemos recibido tantos títulos, tantas distinciones que se le han dado a la ciudad, y no se le da su lugar como patrimonio de la humanidad. Es tener algo maravilloso y echarle algo encima y ocultarle su verdadera esencia, ya que esto ha echado a perder la estructura fundamental de lo colonial de La Antigua. Pero eso, es harina de otro costal totalmente. ¿Qué le recomendaría usted a alguien que viene por primera vez a La Antigua? Tal vez que no crea todo lo que le dicen.... [risas] Lo que pasa es que, a veces, se viene con muchas expectativas y a veces se las pierden. Ya que van a encontrar mucho de lo que no se espera y que van a encontrar poco de lo mucho que querían encontrar en La Antigua.

Is there anything you would change about La Antigua? Wow…. This will probably open up a can of worms, but it bothers me that we have received so many titles, so many distinctions that have been given to the city, but the city is not truly taking its place as a world heritage site. It’s like having something wonderful and then throwing something over it and hiding its true essence. It’s spoiled the fundamental structure of colonial La Antigua. But that’s entirely another matter. What would you recommend to someone who has come to La Antigua for the first time? Maybe not to believe everything you hear…. [laughs] What happens is that, sometimes, people come with a lot of expectations and sometimes they lose that. They’re going to find a lot that wasn’t expected and they’ll find only a little of ‘the much’ that they wanted to find in La Antigua. Translation by Kevin Cole

La Escuela Taller Municipal Por Fernando Meneses

óvenes entre 16 a 20 años de edad, provenientes de las aldeas del municipio de Antigua Guatemala, se reúnen todos los días a las 7 de la mañana alrededor de un edificio en construcción y sin distinción de género, toman diversas herramientas de trabajo para aplicar sus conocimientos en albañilería, carpintería, forja y herrería, fontanería o electricista. Estos son los oficios que se aprenden en la Escuela Taller Municipal para las aldeas de Antigua Guatemala, ubicada en las ruinas de la Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, ahora parte de la sede de la Cooperación Española. Este lugar de aprendizaje de oficios a la manera tradicional en La Antigua es una de las 37 escuelas que existen en el continente Americano, esta en particular iniciada en 1998 por iniciativa de España, mediante la Cooperación Española y funciona por un convenio bilateral con la Municipalidad. La finalidad de éstas escuelas, nacidas en Aguilar de Campoo, España, es la de ofrecer formación a personas desempleadas en oficios que logren conservar y restaurar monumentos y patrimonio histórico arquitectónico de ciudades patrimoniales. Como comenta el Arquitecto Carlos Castañeda Cerezo, Director de la Escuela Taller de La Antigua Guatemala: “la Escuela es sui generis, ya que además de que es una escuela, es un trabajo, y se maneja desde los dos puntos de vista”. Los estudiantes aprenden y experimentan en las mismas condiciones que un trabajador labora en una obra de construcción: entrada a las 7 AM a trabajar, entre 9:30 a 10 de la mañana hora del atol, después de más trabajo es la hora de almuerzo y luego la salida a las 4 PM. These are the trades that can be learned at the Escuela

in 1998 with Spain’s sponsorship via the Cooperación Española, and it operates thanks to a bilateral agreement with the Municipality. These schools, the first of which was established in Aguilar de Campoo, Spain, offer different training options to unemployed young people for trades which can help to conserve and restore monuments and the historic architectural legacy of World Heritage Cities. The Director of the Escuela Taller de La Antigua Guatemala, Architect Carlos Castañeda Cerezo, explains, “The School is unique, since it’s not only a school, but also a job, and we organize it from both perspectives.” Students learn from and experience the same conditions as a worker would at a construction site: starting work at 7 AM, a short break for a snack around 9:30 AM, then after more work comes lunch time and the end of the workday at 4 PM. Motivational extracurricular activities, such as soccer and basketball teams, Mother’s Day celebrations, and field trips, are also

integrated into the students’ experience. Architect Castañeda compares the school with “a construction company…. We get a project and we send workers, we have deadlines to follow, and we have to maintain job quality.” The program, for each of the trade workshops offered, lasts two years for the students, but the important thing is that the students can better themselves and their quality of life through learning; they will obtain a diploma certified by the Ministry of Education and will be able to find a job, earn an honorable salary, and support and help their families. For those interested in enrolling, the Escuela Taller offers scholarships which are provided by the Municipality, and which also help the economic situation of the students’ families and allow students to receive a formal education, which their

Española.” Hasta la fecha se han graduado seis promociones integradas por 300 alumnos egresados formalmente, pero son casi seiscientos muchachos y muchachas que han ingresado y estudiado en la escuela y que luego se han incorporado en el campo laboral. Y las ofertas de trabajo provienen de empresarios de la construcción, o de los talleres de carpintería, herrería, albañilería, y similares. “Las puertas de la Escuela siempre están abiertas para que entren y conozcan la formación de los alumnos, sus cualidades laborales y éticas, por lo que es necesario recalcar que nuestros egresados no son simples practicantes, [sino] son obreros calificados que deben obtener un empleo digno, una remuneración salaria acorde a ese nivel de calidad de trabajo.” dice el Arq. Architect Dunia Valenzuela Morales, the workshops and job site coordinator emphasizes that “the scholarship helps at home, but the diploma is even more valued because it’s an academic achievement which had been accomplished as a joint project of the Municipality and the Cooperación Española.” There have been six graduating classes since 1998 with a total of 300 graduates, but there have been about 600 young people who have enrolled and studied at the school over the years and who later have worked in their respective fields. The job offers come from construction companies or from related workshops in town, such as carpentry, electrical, bricklaying and masonry, and so on. “The doors of the school are always open for people to come by and learn about the educational process, the students’ work ethics and qualities; this is why it is necessary to point out that our graduates

La Escuela es muy bien aceptada ya que han llegado empresarios que contratan a un taller completo, siete u ocho estudiantes, para trabajar, ya que saben que la formación teórica y práctica que reciben no la posee cualquier trabajador para poder desempeñarse de una manera profesional. El objetivo se sigue cumpliendo, ofrecer una oportunidad de aprendizaje de calidad, y en retorno egresan jóvenes calificados en un oficio que enriquecen al municipio y cada una de las comunidades.

Rebuilding the vault of the Convent of the Compañia de Jesús are not just simple apprentices, they are qualified workmen who deserve good jobs with salaries commensurate to their work expertise,” says Architect Castañeda. Among the projects finished by the students of the Escuela Taller, which can be found all around the municipality, are: the Salón César Brañas (33,000 square feet), courtyards at Compañia de Jesús complex (21,500 square feet), the façade of Santa Lucía Hermitage, La Merced Convent, and the current work remodeling the Auxiliary City Hall and the Mercado de Artesanías of San Felipe de Jesús. There have been projects in almost all of the villages in the municipality, where it is a little easier to work (because of the lack of regulations regarding historically accurate construction techniques such as those that exist in the city of La Antigua) and where the results are far more noticeable. The Escuela Taller is very well positioned since there have been businessmen who have hired an entire class from one of the workshops, seven or eight students, for a construction job, since they know that the practical and theoretical education which the students have received is not easy to find among other professional workmen. The school’s objective is being met: offering the opportunity for quality education, and in return these young people graduate well-qualified in a trade which will enrich the municipality and each of the surrounding communities. sta leyenda es una de esas historias que se entrelaza como los caminos, en los cuales nadie sabe donde comienzan nadie sabe donde terminan, pero van llevándonos por cada rincón, cada ciudad y cada país de Hispanoamérica. Y no importa en qué lugar se esté, siempre habrá alguna versión de ésta. Esta versión es parecida a la que contaba la abuela; está plasmada con recuerdos de antaño, con los barrios de esta ciudad histórica y con el trágico río que siempre cruzas cuando entras o sales de La Antigua Guatemala, el Pensativo. Hace ya muchos años, existió una mujer llamada María – los detalles de su vida cambian de narrador en narrador, pero de ella se cuenta que contrajo matrimonio con un acaudalado mercader. Algunas versiones dicen que cuando él estuvo de viaje, ella tuvo un romance con un mozo que llegó a su casa, y de esta unión nació un hijo, pero al no soportar la vergüenza lo ahogó en el Río Pensativo y luego, por el cargo de conciencia, ella hizo lo mismo con su vida. Existen otras versiones que hablan de ella como una madre que no se preocupaba por sus hijos, ni les educaba, simplemente vivía su vida sin pensar en nadie más. Esto duró hasta que su esposo falleció y con él toda la fortuna que le permitía llevar esa clase de vida. Al verse sin dinero, empezó a vender sus muebles, luego sus joyas, hasta que no le quedó nada.

his legend is one of those stories whose history is as knotted as the roots of an old tree, one of those where nobody knows where it starts or where it ends, a story that can be found in every nook and cranny, in every city, and in every country in Latin America. No matter where you are, there’s always some version of it. This version is similar to the one that grandma told; it’s filled with memories of yesteryear, with the neighborhoods of this historic city, and with the tragic river which one always crosses when going in or out of La Antigua Guatemala, the Pensativo. Many years ago, there was a woman named María - the details of her life change from narrator to narrator, but it’s told that she married a wealthy merchant. Some versions say that when he was traveling, she had

an affair with a young man who came to her house, and from this union a son was born. She couldn’t bear the shame, so she drowned the child in the Pensativo River, and then, because of this great burden on her conscience, she drowned herself. There are other versions that speak of her as a mother who didn’t care for her children; she didn’t teach them, she didn’t do anything for them – she simply lived her own life without thinking about anyone else. This continued until her husband died and she found herself without the fortune that allowed her that kind of life. Finding herself without money, she began to sell her furniture, then her jewels, until there was nothing left. One day she took her three children out for a walk to the river and there, one by one, she drowned them, throwing them

La leyenda cuenta que por sus actos esta mujer fue castigada a vagar eternamente en busca de sus hijos y hasta encontrarlos, nunca podrá estar en paz. Es un alma en pena que usualmente se le ve alrededor de la medianoche, entre las 12 y la 1 de la mañana. Suele frecuentar los lugares en donde hay agua, como fuentes, ríos, estanques, pilas y tanques. De vestiduras blancas y un largo cabello negro, y un rostro que no se deja ver, lo único que se escucha es su grito en llanto: ¡Aaaaayyyyyyy! ¡¿Dónde están mis hijos?! Dicen que, si alguna vez vas caminando de noche por el Tanque La Unión o por las pilas de Santa Ana, puedes escucharla; si esto llegara a ocurrir, corre y no te quedes paralizado por el miedo, porque si logras huir antes de escuchar su grito tres veces no logrará llevarte consigo. Pero si eres de esos valientes que les gusta jugar con fuego, hay un amuleto que puede ayudarte; consiste en llevar tu ropa interior al revés. Pero no te confíes ya que al escucharla muy cerca significa que está lejos, pero al escucharla muy a lo lejos, está cerca y debes reaccionar antes de que sea demasiado tarde.

The legend tells that, because of her actions, she was eternally condemned to wander in search of her children, and until she finds them, she can never be at peace. She is a lost soul who is usually seen around midnight, between 12 and 1 AM. She frequents places that are sources of water: fountains, rivers, ponds, pilas, and water tanks. In white robes, with long black hair, and with an unseen face, all that can be heard is her mournful wail: Aaaaayyyyyyy! Where are my children?! They say that if you walk at night by the Tanque La Unión or near the pilas in Santa Ana, you can hear her. If you do, run; don’t be frozen in fear because if you’re able to flee before you hear her wail for the third time, she won’t be able to take you with her. If you’re a brave soul who likes to play with fire, there is one charm that might help you: wear your underwear inside out! But don’t rely on this; if you hear her close by, it means she’s far away. And if you hear her in the far distance, that means she’s very near, and you must flee before it’s too late. Translation by Kevin Cole

Part 2 is subtitled “Guerrilla” and shows Che leading a small partisan army or guerrilla against the military movement in Bolivia. It recounts the difficulties faced in this country and his last days of life. These stories expose us to the ideas that made Che into an icon of revolution.

Hipo es un inadaptado adolescente vikingo que quiere ser cazador de dragones, pero su padre, el jefe de la tribu, no lo deja porque lo mira muy débil y teme que salga herido. Sin embargo, Hipo es muy ingenioso e inventa distintas armas para ayudar a cazar dragones, es con una de estas que él derriba a Furia Nocturna, el dragón más temido por su tribu, pero no se atreve a matarlo. Esto iniciará una amistad que desafiará las creencias de su entorno. La historia comienza con una premisa emotiva muy usada en las películas animadas, la falta de conexión entre padres e hijos y la búsqueda de aceptación de los hijos, pero rápidamente se aparta de los desarrollos comunes. Es sorprendente como Hipo, el protagonista de una película de acción, aboga por el pacifismo, conoce su identidad, sigue su propio camino y valora las ideas. Contrario a la tendencia actual en las películas, de premiar la destreza física, las casualidades o la suerte, acá se apuesta a la inteligencia. La película cuenta con excelente animación y banda sonora. Es de resaltar que hay escenas extraordinarias, como la pelea final y los vuelos en dragones, que lo sumergen a uno en esta gran aventura.

Based on the children’s book of the same name. Hiccup is a misfit teenage Viking who wants to be a dragon slayer, but his father, the chief of the tribe, does not let him because Hiccup looks very weak and his father’s afraid he’ll get hurt. But Hiccup is very clever and invents various weapons to help hunt dragons. It’s one of those weapons that lets him get the best of Night Fury, the dragon his people fear most, but he can’t bring himself to kill Night Fury. This starts a friendship that will challenge the community’s beliefs. The story begins with a commonly used emotional premise, the lack of connection between parents and children and the child’s search for acceptance, but this plot quickly leaves the expected developments. It’s amazing how Hiccup, the main character in an action movie, advocates pacifism, knows his identity, goes his own way, and values ideas. Contrary to the current trend in movies, instead of rewarding physical prowess, coincidences, or luck, here the bet is on intelligence. The film has excellent animation and a great soundtrack. There are some extraordinary scenes in this great adventure, like the final fight and the flight of the dragons, which will captivate you.

Música original de Pablo Collado y su grupo del álbum Armonía en La Selva. Presentan algunos fragmentos de su nuevo material discográfico Maya 2012, que recopila melodías étnico-folclóricas con una proyección ecológica, inspirada por la naturaleza de la cultura Maya ancestral. En el CD Maya 2012, Pablo Collado trata de identificarse con la idiosincrasia y la cultura ancestral maya mediante sonidos de pitos, ocarinas, flautas, sonidos de la selva e instrumentos repercusivos étnicos como chinches, maracas, palo de lluvia, etc.

Original music by Pablo Collado and his group from the album Armonía en La Selva. Presenting excerpts from his new album Maya 2012, which is a collection of ethno-folk melodies with an ecological focus, inspired by the nature of ancient Maya culture. In the Maya 2012 CD, Pablo Collado identifies with idiosyncrasy and the ancient culture of the Maya through the sounds of whistles, ocarinas, flutes, jungle noises, and ethnic percussive instruments such as chinches, maracas, rain sticks, etc.

Usually ranging from light to dark green, chayote (güisquil in Guatemala) is the fruit of a flowering vine that belongs to the gourd family. Similar in texture to squash, chayote can be cooked (boiled, steamed, fried, or baked) until soft, giving it a slightly starchy yet watery texture (like a cross between a potato and a cucumber). Some people also eat the fruit raw in salads or marinated with lime juice and a dash of chili. Less popular, but also edible, are the seeds, stems, leaves and roots of the plant.

The Arch of Santa Catalina was originally built as a bridge to join the property of the Santa Catalina convent on either side of 5a Avenida Norte, so the nuns could cross the street without leaving their cloistered life. Built in 1693, the arch remained standing after the earthquakes that rocked La Antigua during the following century, but was eventually reconstructed in the mid-1800s. Today it is one of the most recognizable monuments in Guatemala and frames Volcán de Agua to the south and La Merced to the north for some great photo opportunities.

Whether you live in Guatemala or are just passing through, this country can offer you excellent healthcare options with state-of-the-art hospitals, advanced technology, and superbly educated, trained, and certified doctors. Medical tourism, briefly defined as “going abroad for medical care,” is a growing industry worldwide, and it makes sense that it would be. With the high cost of medical care in many developed countries, people are seeking alternatives for general healthcare, dental and eye care, necessary and elective surgeries, and prescriptions. In many countries, especially the United States, the cost of malpractice insurance has ballooned the monthly expenses for most doctors, clinics, and hospitals. Combine that with high labor costs, the hassle and expense of insurance billing, and overcrowded healthcare systems, and it is no wonder that it is next to impossible for doctors in North America and Europe to offer affordable treatment in a timely manner. wenty-seven-year old Suny sits in her dirt-floor house, cutting and rolling old magazine pages. Winding the strips of paper into tightly wrapped balls, she glues and varnishes each one to create one-ofa-kind jewelry beads. In one week she can make up to 100 pieces of jewelry. Suny rinses her hands between each bead, ensuring quality in her work, preventing dust from her home from soiling her work. “My dream is to help my children, as much as I can, to study, graduate, and find a career that they love. I want to be the best mother and example I can be for them,” she says. Don’t let her humble surroundings fool you. Suny is a Guatemalan entrepreneur. She is one of the 29 jewelry designers of CREAMOS, a collective organization

CREAMOS is the first and most developed initiative of this program. The program continues to experiment with new business concepts, such as a sewing company and a consignment clothing sale. CREAMOS began as a training activity where the mothers could apply the math and literacy skills they learned in Safe Passage’s Adult Literacy program to real-life situations. Safe Passage provides education to approximately 600 children in Guatemala City’s garbage dump community. Additionally, Safe Passage offers an adult literacy program to help the parents of the children achieve an education through middle school, and offers scholarships for high school. The training proved so effective that the program soon flourished into its own independent

company, officially incorporated in 2010, making Shirley Chinchilla, the first graduate of the Adult Literacy Program, the company’s legal representative. CREAMOS teaches business skills to mothers through hands-on management of their own women’s cooperative. “It’s all about empowering women and giving them as many skills as we can,” says Ilusion Farias, Manager of the Social Entrepreneurship Program at Safe Passage. The women create their artwork in their homes and meet weekly to discuss business issues and deliver their artwork for sale. The mothers handle everything themselves, including design, construction, quality control, pricing and sales. They also train new women for the program through a rigorous 16-week training series led by an internal department composed of the women themselves. Before joining CREAMOS, many of the mothers had earned their living by picking through Guatemala City’s sprawling trash dump for reusable materials to sell. Most of the women have small children and often had no choice but to bring their children to the dump with them. “It’s a huge danger,” says Farias, describing the risks of injury and death these families faced every day. “But now these moms can take care of their children in a safe place – in their own homes.” Although CREAMOS is dedicated to educating and training women, it is best known for these women’s ingenious use of recycled materials. All the designs originate with the women themselves, who create jewelry, wallets,

Justa lives with her husband and nine children; the 11 family members share five beds. Her husband, a street vendor, does not make enough money to support the family. For 12 years, Justa worked in the Guatemala City garbage dump, accompanied by her three youngest children. She earned Q25-Q30 per day (about US$3-US$4) at the dump, and supplemented this meager amount by washing & ironing clothing and running a small tienda (shop) in her house. Justa joined CREAMOS last October, and no longer has to risk working in the dump in order to feed her family. With her earnings as a designer, she is now able to support her family, providing more than 30 meals a day.

As the women learn computer skills, they are also finding ideas for different styles on the Internet. “Their creativity just flows,” says Hannah Sklar, Social Entrepreneurship Instructor. “They hear us talking about something, and the next day they’ll come in with a sample they’ve made.” Each piece reflects the unique vision of the artist who designed it. “With such a small company, you get that relationship between the piece and the woman who made it,” says Sklar. “You don’t just see it as jewelry – you see it as people.” The CREAMOS mothers not only create their own designs, they also provide their own materials; there are no handouts here. With the exception of donated items for recycling, such as old magazines, the mothers purchase their own supplies – glass beads, earring wires, etc. – to create their artwork. Women new to the program are offered a short-term, interest-free loan to purchase these items with the understanding that they will be able to repay the loan within a month of joining the company. When Petronila joined CREAMOS, she had no idea that she would soon face one of the greatest challenges of her life. A few years ago, this 35-year-old mother of seven children developed an incurable disease that would eventually make her blind. As her vision slipped away, she could no longer make jewelry, but continued working side-by-side with other mothers in the cooperative to sell their jewelry at Cemaco. One day the women realized they had not purchased enough bags to give to their customers.

eptiembre es el mes que ejemplifica el patriotismo y orgullo nacional guatemaltecos. El Día de la Independencia es a mediados del mes - el día 15. Las celebraciones son en conmemoración de la independencia en 1821 de Guatemala (y Centro América) del imperio español. En todo el país, en casi todas las ciudades, pueblos y aldeas, podrás encontrar cantidades de fuegos artificiales, conciertos y grupos de jóvenes corriendo con antorchas caseras. En la tarde y la noche del 14, si estás en La Antigua, ve al Parque Central para las festividades y luego, en la mañana del 15, no pierdas irte a la Calle Ancha, cerca del estadio municipal en el norte de la ciudad, donde podrás ver el desfile del Día de la Independencia con bandas de la mayoría de las muchas escuelas del área. eptember is the month that exemplifies Guatemalan patriotism and national pride. Independence Day is smack-dab in the middle of the month – on the 15th. The celebrations are in commemoration of Guatemala’s (and Central America’s) independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821. Throughout the country, in almost every city, town and village, you’ll find loads of fireworks, concerts and

groups of young people running with homemade torches. In the late afternoon and evening of the 14th, if you’re in La Antigua, head to Central Park for festivities and then on the morning of the 15th, make sure to go to the Calle Ancha, near the municipal stadium in the north of town, where you’ll see the Independence Day parade featuring bands from most of the many schools in the area.

An even bigger parade is held in Guatemala City that same morning; it passes right in front of the National Palace at the Central Plaza. omento para el Desarrollo Integral (“Promoting Comprehensive Development” known by its initials in Spanish as F.D.I.) is an NGO founded in 2007 by a group of young locals and foreigners in Quetzaltenango (Xela). The NGO seeks to promote education in urban and rural areas through various educational and social programs, and to foster a culture of recycling and environmental conservation. This year, F.D.I. began the “Bolsas Educativas” project (“Educational Bags,” that is, bags of school supplies). Many children who live in Quetzaltenango have to work every morning, selling in the market or cleaning houses in order to help support their families. Most go to school in the afternoons but do not have the resources to buy their supplies and materials. The Bolsa Educativa contains various materials needed for their studies. Mujeres Indígenas Graduandose en Derechos de la Mujer

a Iniciativa de Derechos de la Mujer (IDM) permite a las mujeres indígenas enfrentar a la desigualdad de género y mejorar sus vidas a través del acceso a los servicios jurídicos, la educación sobre los derechos de las mujeres, y prevención de la violencia de género. La IDM trabaja en cinco comunidades rurales del municipio de Patzún, departamento de Chimaltenango. Recientemente la IDM celebró la graduación del primer grupo de mujeres de su Programa de Educación sobre los Derechos de la Mujer, un programa de capacitación de seis meses para las mujeres en materia de derechos humanos y las formas de proteger sus derechos. Noventa mujeres de cinco comunidades se graduaron del programa. A través de las capacitaciones, las participantes aprenden acerca de los problemas que afectan a muchas de ellas, incluyendo la violencia doméstica, la desigualdad de género y los derechos de propiedad y herencia. El programa también ofrece talleres de desarrollo de habilidades, tales como el desarrollo del liderazgo, la toma de decisiones y la participación política. he Women’s Justice Initiative (WJI) empowers indigenous women to address gender inequality and improve their lives through access to legal services, women’s rights education, and gender-based violence prevention. WJI works in five rural communities in Patzún, Chimaltenango, Guatemala. WJI recently celebrated the graduation of the first group of women from its Women’s Rights Education Program, a six-month training program for women on human rights and how to protect their rights. Ninety

women from five communities graduated from the program. Through the trainings, participants learn about issues affecting many of them, including domestic violence, gender inequality, and property and inheritance rights. The program also provides skillsbuilding workshops, such as leadership development, decision making, and political participation. By increasing women’s legal literacy and leadership capacity, WJI empowers women to protect themselves and their families from discrimination and abuse.
