El 2014 fue para nosotros un año que nos permitió exponer un importante crecimiento de la compañía, porque logramos incorporar nuevos destinos en Bolivia y Sudamérica: ocho ciudades vieron por primera vez el arribo de uno de nuestros aviones en sus aeropuertos y logramos para algunas de ellas su primer vuelo internacional. Este desarrollo permitió a nuestra línea aérea ser recibida con euforia y expectativa. Por ello no solo trabajamos en sumar destinos, sino en hacer alianzas con cada uno de ellos para que se potencien turísticamente, para que los viajeros puedan llegar y salir eficientemente con conexiones inmediatas a través de Amaszonas. Ese compromiso lo estamos construyendo con cada uno de nuestros 20 destinos. Para acompañar estas alianzas y cumpliendo con una planificación anual adecuada, me es grato anunciarle que desde abril incorporamos nuevas aeronaves. Seguimos fortaleciendo nuestra flota homogénea con otro Bombardier CRJ 200, que es el avión más exitoso del mundo en las conexiones regionales debido a su versatilidad y modernidad. De este modo, en 2015, continuamos trabajando en el fortalecimiento y consolidación de nuestros destinos, para que cuando usted decida viajar a alguno de ellos pueda hacerlo de forma placentera y con puntualidad, un atributo de nuestro servicio que reafirmamos en esta oportunidad. Welcome aboard. Once more is a pleasure to take you to your next destination. 2014 was for us a year that allowed us to expose a significant growth of the company, because we add new destinations in Bolivia and South America: eight cities first saw the arrival of one of our aircraft at their airports and achieve for some its first international flight. This development allowed our airline to be greeted with euphoria and expectation. Therefore not only we work on adding destinations, but to make alliances with each of them so that they boost tourism, so that travellers can arrive and exit efficiently with immediate connections through Amaszonas. That commitment we are building with each of our 20 destinations. To accompany these alliances and fulfilling an annual planning adequate, I am pleased to announce that from April we incorporate new aircraft. We continue strengthening our homogenous fleet with other Bombardier CRJ 200, which is the most successful aircraft in the world in the regional connections due to its versatility and modernity. In this way, in 2015, we continue to work on the strengthening and consolidation of our destinations, so when you decide to travel to any of them you can make pleasant manner and in a timely manner, an attribute of our service that we reaffirm on this occasion. Once you have been there, Salta will be written with nostalgia. The city has museums, green areas, deep respect for its architectural and cultural heritage, and fun and romantic nights, all wrapped up in the magic of wine. Cafayate, a town two hours from Salta, understood the power are turning its local production into a tourist attraction in order to elevate its wines to a world category, and moreover, to create a fine and mystic atmosphere. ENTRE COPAS Y COPLAS Una ciudad vinera no puede dejar de hacer gala de una vida nocturna vibrante. Salta supo complementarla con su tradición guitarrera y folclorista. En la noche, la parada obligatoria está en la calle Balcarce, donde los restaurantes, peñas, bares y boliches conviven, la gente camina por la vía y las mesas invaden las aceras. No hay barreras de edad, turistas y locales disfrutan, y es normal que una pareja de salteños tome el escenario y baile con la misma destreza que los bailarines profesionales. La fiesta también está en la calle y grupos musicales toman las plazas para generar una algarabía que invita a ser parte de ella. El vino empieza a ser el protagonista cuando los recién llegados de Cafayate emocionen a los que están por ir al lugar con sus relatos y anécdotas.

LA BUENA VIDA Cada pueblo del camino aporta su colorido a un valle donde las nubes bailan con los cerros que, en capas, se sobreponen elaborando un cuadro traslúcido de diversos tonos que se pierden en la distancia. Campos de amarillento tabaco, dorado maíz y anaranjados duraznos empiezan a ceder ante las verdes parras, y las tímidas manchas púrpuras se lanzan al encuentro, envolviendo a Cafayate en un oasis rodeado de una quebrada con cerros, cuya variedad e intensidad de colores no permiten una descripción que les haga justicia.
Cafayate (cajón de agua, en lengua nativa) es, sin duda, un destino imperdible en las cercanías de Salta. Cafayate (ravine in the native language), a town close to Salta, is without a doubt a place not to be missed.

THE GOOD LIFE Each town on the road provides its own color to this valley where the clouds dance with the hills. In waves, the clouds impose themselves creating translucent scenery of different tones that then get lost in the distance. Fields of yellow tobacco, golden corn and orange peaches give way to green pears. Timid purple stains found along the way wrap Cafayate in an oasis surrounded by the mountain stream and hills, whose variety and intense colors do not allow for a description that does it justice.

CREACIÓN DIVINA La vid es un arbusto trepador que tarda cinco años en dar su fruto: la uva. Los racimos se forman una vez al año y son recolectados en una fiesta llamada vendimia. Esta bebida que acompaña al hombre desde el año 6.000 antes de Cristo, nace con el mostro (la uva aplastada, con cáscara y semilla) que va a tanques de fermentación de ocho días a un mes. Se separa el sedimento y el líquido se lleva a toneles de madera llamados barricas, donde el vino puede permanecer por años. Los tiempos dependen del tipo de producto que se quiera obtener.

DIVINE CREATION The vine is climbing shrub that needs five years to give fruit: the grape. The bunches form once a year and are collected in a festival of the wine harvest. This drink, that has accompanied man since the year 6,000 BC, is born of the must (the grape is crushed, with the skin and seeds, making a pulp) that goes into fermentation tanks for eight days to a month. The sediment separates and the liquid is taken away in wooden barrels called kegs, where the wine can remain for years. The time held there depends on they type of product one wants to achieve.

LUXURY EVERYWHERE The wineries are well equipped and ready to receive visitors. Visitors will take a tour and learn how wine is processed, then they will have a wine tasting, and if they wish they can buy a bottle of their preference (at winery price - almost at cost) and enjoy it on the terrace, under a tree or at the foot of the vineyard. Many are small family businesses full of tradition, and others are large operations that see to every last detail.

The land of the valleys and the Chaco (a region of Bolivia), dance and sing to bring to life the Vendimia (a wine harvest festival); this festival is one of the top tourist attractions of Bolivia. It is the best letter of introduction to the land of wine, folklore and culture. Cheers Tarija! Tarija vive el momento histórico de pasar a ser uno de los principales destinos turísticos de Bolivia, tanto para los nacionales como para los que la visitan de afuera. Ayudada por el impulso del turismo en su vecina Salta, por una incipiente cultura de servicio y producción que gira alrededor del vino, y con la bendición de su poderío gasífero, la joya del sur empieza a brillar por la fuerza de su gente, que toma la iniciativa logrando emprendimientos privados que resultan en atractivos lugares de descanso y conocimiento de la cultura vitivinícola chapaca. Para celebrar este avance, La Vendimia es la fiesta en la que anualmente se agradece a la tierra y se da inicio a un nuevo ciclo de producción. La mística cubre las viñas de Valle de la Concepción (población distante a 40 minutos de la ciudad), donde los abuelos bodegueros son mitos que los hijos ya reencarnan para los nietos, que orgullosos exhiben sus vinos como la muestra suprema de la estirpe vinera por excelencia. Tarija is living through an historic moment; it is becoming one of the principle tourist destinations in Bolivia, for both national and international tourists. Helped by the growth of tourism in neighboring Salta, by an incipient service and production culture that is built around wine and with the blessing of gas production, the jewel of the south is shining more brightly thanks to the strength of her people; people who take the initiative and create private undertakings that turn out to be attractive places for relaxation and learning about the wine culture of Tarija. To celebrate this advancement, the Vendimia is the annual party to thank the land and to begin a new production cycle. The vineyards of the Valle de la Concepcion (a population located 40 minutes from the city) are mystical and it is here that winemaking grandparents are myths that their children reincarnate for the grandchildren, proudly showing off their wines as a supreme example of the excellent vine stock. Tarija ofrece la tercera vía, lo que no es ni montaña ni trópico, ni occidental ni oriental; Tarija es chapaca y valluna con todas sus variantes. Anchas avenidas con amplios bulevares llenos de vegetación, combinados con casas coloniales y calles angostas con faroles e iglesias de piedra, que hacen de su casco urbano un centro histórico. La plaza principal está rodeada de restaurantes con gran ambiente. En las noches el lugar de encuentro es Pizza Pazza, bar rodeado por toda la bohemia característica de Tarija. Tomarse una copa allí es un pase casi garantizado a escuchar grandes anécdotas.

Tarija offers a third route, it is neither mountainous nor tropical, neither east nor west; Tarija is chapaca and valluna with all its variety. Broad avenues with wide, vegetationfilled boulevards coexist with colonial houses, narrow streets with street lamps, and a stone church, which together make the center of town an historic place. The main plaza is surrounded by lively restaurants. At night, the meet-up place is Pizza Pazza, a bar full of the bohemian that characterizes Tarija. Having a glass of wine there is almost a guaranteed way to hear great anecdotes.

la vida está de fiesta Los puestos ya están listos, las uvas invaden las calles y cubren los marcos y las chapacas destellan colorido con sus mejores galas. La primera guitarra se escucha y la primera botella se descorcha. Los visitantes empiezan a llenar el Valle de la Concepción. Para media mañana la fiesta ya explotó y los típicos chanchos a la cruz se ponen al fuego. Grupos de amigos invitan a brindar en cada esquina y las parejas se saludan en los restaurantes más románticos y ambientados para ellos. La plaza principal del pueblo es el núcleo de todo. Pequeños productores muestras sus hazañas del año y otros aprovechan de mostrar las novedades. La chicha de uva, el licor de uva, las uvas en singani y los tragos preparados de vino y destilado se prueban en cada estand. Los cantores se unen y la fiesta sigue todo el día.

By mid-morning the party explodes and pork is put on the spit to roast over the fire. Groups of friends toast on each corner and couples greet one another in the most romantic restaurants. The main plaza of town is the nucleus of everything. Small producers show their greatest achievements of the year, and others take advantage of the moment to show new products. Grape chicha, grape liquor, singani and other drinks that are prepared from wine and distilled products are sampled in each stand. The singers join up and the party lasts all day.

Se elige el mejor racimo de uvas del año, que puede llegar a pesar hasta cinco kilos. Se hace la pisada simbólica de la uva y los lugareños enseñan a recolectarla. Moscatel de Alejandría, rivier, cavernet savignon, malbec, criolla, red globe… son algunas de sus variedades, cada una diferente y con un propósito (para vino, singani o de mesa). En La Vendimia la uva es la reina y se puede aprender mucho de este fruto que da paso a la bebida más emblemática de la historia humana. Además, el valle es generoso y se pueden ver duraznos de exportación, granadas, higos, zapallos, manzanas del valle, entre otros. Una fiesta de la abundancia, para que nunca falte.

The best bunch of grapes of the year is elected, and can weigh up to five kilograms. People make a symbolic stomping of the grapes and locals teach others how to collect it. La lluvia esconde a los habitantes de Tarata, ciudad distante a 29 km de Cochabamba (centro de Bolivia). Solo doña Martha Arze la enfrenta envuelta en una mantilla y apenas refugiada en su pequeña tienda de artesanías a la vuelta de la plaza central. Parienta lejana de Esteban Arze, el caudillo altoperuano que luchó por la independencia americana y del cual están orgullosos los tarateños, la mujer cuenta que es normal la tranquilidad del lugar. “Solo los domingos hay movimiento, por las ferias. Mañana tendremos una de duraznos”, dice a modo de invitación. “Hay que aprovechar para comprar y, de paso, come unos choricitos”. Tarata es conocida como Villa Colonial por sus calles y edificaciones que parecen detenidas en el tiempo. Además, la ciudad se jacta de nombrarse dos veces “capital de la República”, en razón a que de este terruño emergieron dos expresidentes de Bolivia: Mariano Melgarejo y René Barrientos. Only Mrs. Martha Arze goes out, covered in a shawl and barely making it to her small store of artisan work, located around the corner form the main plaza. A distant relative of Esteban Arze, a leader of the Alto Peru region who fought for independence and who is a source of great pride to the people of Tarata, this woman tells us how such calmness is common here. “There is only traffic on Sundays and on fair days”, she says invitingly. “Take advantage of it and buy something and then eat a sausage.” Tarata is known as the Villa Colonial (Colonial Town) due to its streets and buildings, which appear lost in time. Furthermore, the town can boast that twice it was named Capital of the Republic, because twice it has been the hometown of Presidents of the Bolivia: Mariano Melgarejo and René Barrientos.

Tarata es llamativa desde que se llega a su plaza central o Aroma, donde, entre palmeras y jacarandás, destacan los bustos de los expresidentes y el monumento a Esteban Arze. Al frente está el templo San Pedro construido en 1600, con un coro que alberga una joya colonial: un órgano hecho en San Pedro de Moxos. Subiendo a la Torre de la Alcaldía, donde se encuentra un reloj a cuerda montado en 1901, se obtiene la mejor vista de la ciudad. Las nubes lluviosas dan un respiro y la gente empieza a salir de sus casas o negocios. En el quiosco juegan dos niños que pueden convertirse en guías perfectos para cualquier turista. A unas cuadras del centro y colindante con la iglesia San José, que alberga reliquias de San Severino, está el convento del mismo nombre, construido en 1772. Actualmente sirve como lugar de retiros y museo. La lluvia arrecia pero es imposible irse sin probar los famosos chorizos tarateños y, claro, visitar la casa de Melgarejo. Está en las afueras de Tarata, casi fantasmal. Cuesta imaginar lo que los pequeños guías narran: “Era la más grande y hermosa de todo el valle”. Definitivamente, el tiempo no pasa en vano. Tarata grabs your attention from the start. In the central plaza, where from between the palm and jacaranda trees, one can see the busts of the two ex-presidents as well a monument to the martyr Esteban Arze. Across the way is the San Pedro Temple, built in 1600, and which still hosts a colonial jewel, an organ made in San Pedro de Moxos. Climbing the tower of City Hall, home to a clock built in 1901, you get the best view of the city. The rain clouds rest for a moment, and people emerge from their homes and businesses. At a small stall, two children play, who can then become perfect tour-guides for any tourist. A few blocks from the center and adjacent to the San Jose Church (housing relics of San Severino), a convent built in 1772 is found. Today it is used for retreats and as a museum. The rain reappears, but it is impossible to leave without tasting the famous sausages of Tarata and of course, a visit to Melgarejo’s house. This ghost-like house is located on the outskirts of Tarata. It is hard to imagine it as the young guides describe how it was before, “as the biggest and most beautiful of the town”. Time certainly does not go by in vain. 32

A touch of chili pepper cut in fine pieces is useful. The Colombian chef, Juan Carlos Espada, marinates the fish in salt with chili peppers and red onions before rinsing it in cold water so that the flavor doesn’t fade with the lemon. Veronica Huaman, of Ecuador, prepares the juice by mixing a bit of ginger, a clove of garlic, a few sprigs of cilantro and the juice of eight limes. Let that stand in a bag, so that later you can add half a teaspoon of salt and two teaspoons of yellow chili pepper paste. The Peruvians call this juice compliment to the ceviche, “tiger milk”. El 9 de marzo de 1989 la imagen derramó lágrimas cristalinas y el 2 de abril de su cabeza manó sangre. A lo largo de 20 años, el Cristo produjo avivamientos de fe y sanaciones consideradas milagrosas. On March 9, 1989 this statue cried crystal tears and on April 2, blood dripped from his head. Over the last 20 years, this Christ has provided demonstrations of faith and actions deemed miraculous. Ha llorado y sangrado, y nadie puede asegurar que este hecho, para muchos milagroso, se repita. Hace 20 años el Cristo de Limpias o Cristo de la Agonía derramó lágrimas cristalinas por su rostro de yeso en un sencillo oratorio de una casa en Cochabamba (Bolivia) y un mes más tarde su cabeza comenzó a sangrar. Silvia Arébalo compró la pequeña imagen el 9 de marzo de 1995 y por la noche su tía Rosario de Vía se percató de que estaba llorando. El evento avivó la fe de la familia, vecinos y de gente que tras enterarse de la noticia quiso presentar sus plegarias y sufrimientos al Señor de las Lágrimas. El lugar es un centro de peregrinación donde muchos agradecen sanaciones a males como el cáncer, parálisis, infertilidades e, incluso, reconciliaciones matrimoniales. El Vaticano aún no ha reconocido el llanto del Cristo de Cochabamba como milagro divino. En este mes se espera que una comisión de la Conferencia Episcopal Boliviana entregue un informe definitivo de los estudios científicos de la imagen y su resolución. La sangre ha sido analizada en laboratorios bolivianos, de Estados Unidos, Italia y Australia, y todos concluyeron en lo mismo: es sangre humana, pero fue imposible determinar su tipo y cadena genética.

It has cried and bled and no one can be sure if these occurrences, considered by many to be miraculous, will be repeated. Twenty years ago, the Cristo de Limpias or the Cristo de la Agonia, cried crystalline tears down its plaster face, and a month later its face began to bleed. All of this occurred in a simple chapel found in a private home in Cochabamba (Bolivia). Silvia Arébalo bought the small image on April 9, 1995 and that night her aunt, Rosario de Via, saw that it was crying. The event rekindled the faith of the family, neighbors and people who heard the news and showed up to pay homage to the Señor de las Lágrimas. This place has become a center of pilgrimage where many are thankful the cures provided for cancer, paralysis, infertility, and even marriage problems. The Vatican has not yet recognized the crying of the Cristo de Cochabamba as a divine miracle. This month it is expected that a commission of the Episcopal Confederation of Bolivia will present a definitive report of scientific studies. The blood has been analyzed at labs in Bolivia, the US, Italy and Australia, and they all concluded the same thing: it is human blood, but it is impossible to determine they type and genetic chain of the blood.

Sudamérica es sinónimo de mezcla, sabor, ingenio y contrastes, características presentes hasta en nuestras formas de comunicación. Entre 1890 y 1910 llegaron a los puertos de Buenos Aires, Rosario y Montevideo más de tres millones de personas, en su mayoría de Italia y España. Allí se originó el tango y un nuevo lenguaje: el lunfardo, que brinda a la cuenca del Plata una identidad idiomática. Todos, casi sin distinción de edad o jerarquía, serán llamados por “vos”. La mujer se hizo mina y el hombre chabón. Mango, guita y sope es el apetecido dinero, la ropa es pilcha y simpático es canchero o piola. Si te dicen bagarto, bagallo o bagre te están diciendo feo y si te quieren armar quilombo o bardo, ¡cuídate!, eso significa problemas.

South America is synonymous with mixture, flavor, ingenuity, and contrasts, and these characteristics are found in the way we communicate. Between 1890 and 1920, more than 3 million people arrived to the ports of Buenos Aires, Rosario and Montevideo, the majority coming from Italy and Spain. There tango was born, as well as a new language: the lunfardo, which gives a singular language identity to the area of La Plata. Everyone, without distinction, is referred to as “vos”. Women are called “mina” and men “chabon”. “Mango, guita and sope” is wanted money. Clothing was changed to “pilcha” and nice is “canchero and piola”. If someone calls you “bagarto, bagallo or bagre” they are calling you ugly and if they want to create a “quilombo or bardo”, be careful because this means trouble.

Imaginemos a dos paraguayos utilizándolo: “Viá entrar en el baño. Pasame na el dentrífico y mi toballa. Viá pedirle a mi apá o a mi agüelo que me regale para mi champiún”. Para hablar de algo muy gastado dirán apelechado, si ven un muchacho joven le dirán cabezudo. Un valé será alguien servicial y usarán yoqui en vez de gorra. LA LENGUA PODEROSA Según la Unesco, más de 12 millones de personas tienen al quechua como su primera lengua. Esto hace indiscutible su influencia en el habla de Perú, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia y Argentina. Pero las consecuencias van mucho más allá: la mezcla con el español ha provocado reinterpretaciones lingüísticas. Por ello, encachar en Ecuador significa exagerar, mientras que en Perú es molestar. Huaso en Chile se refiere al trabajador del campo y en Bolivia es sinónimo de ordinario o malhablado. Champa en algunas regiones significa pasto y en otras se refiere al pelo. Palabras tan universalizadas como carpa, cancha, poncho, pucho o coca tienen su origen en el quechua.

GUARANÍ In Paraguay about 70% of the population speaks Guarani and Spanish. This interaction has taken place over more than 200 years and has resulted in a new dialect called “yopara”. Here is how two Paraguayans use this language: Viá entrar en el baño. Pasame na el dentrífico y mi toballa. Viá pedirle a mi apá o a mi agüelo que me regale para mi champiún”. To refer to something used they will say “apelechado” and if they see a young man they will say “cabezudo”. Valé is someone in service, and they say “yoqui” instead of hat. A POWERFUL LANGUAGE According to UNESCO, more than 12 million people speak Quecha as a first language. Its influence is undisputable in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Argentina. But the affects go much further: the mixing with Spanish has brought about linguistic reinterpretations. In Ecuador, “encachar” means to exaggerate while in Peru it means to annoy. “Huaso” in Chile means someone who works in the country-side, while in Bolivia it is synonymous with ordinary or foul-mouthed. “Champa” in some regions means grass and in others it means hair. Words so universal like “carpa, cancha, poncho, pucho and coca” have their origin in Quecha.

DE MONTAÑAS Y PALMERAS Si eres extranjero en Bolivia o estás cambiando de ciudad tendrás que tener en cuenta lo siguiente: Oruro, Potosí, Cochabamba y La Paz conforman la zona andina con gran influencia quechua, salvo en La Paz donde manda el aimara (lengua previa al imperio inca y que sobrevivió a la Conquista). En esta región la segunda persona particular se trata de “tú”; las personas suelen tener un hablar cerrado, con poca modulación y es común, por la influencia de las lenguas precoloniales, que se cambien de lugar los verbos, sujetos y predicados. La letra “ere” (r) tiene una pronunciación silbada y arrastrada y es común el uso excesivo de la perífrasis verbal “haber de”: has de estudiar, has de ver, has de venir... El oriente boliviano, como muchas regiones en Latinoamérica, usa el voseo con la consecuente agudización del verbo: vos tenés, vos querés, vos podés... Pero, además, los habitantes tienen un hablar que el extranjero describen como cansado o acalorado, por lo general quitando de los sustantivos las últimas sílabas y sustituyéndolas por una “u” (cansau, atareau, enojau…). La “ese” (s) desaparece o se convierte en “jota” (j). ¿Un ejemplo? “Volamoj en uno de los avionej máj rápidoj”. Algo muy particular es el uso de las terminaciones ingo y ango para enfatizar lo muy pequeño y lo muy grande, respectivamente. “En un ratingo llegajte a ejta nota para saber lo que era cameratanga”. Pues es el superlativo de camerata, en modismo de Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Beni y Pando, el oriente de Bolivia.

FROM MOUNTAINS AND PALM TREES If you are a foreigner in Bolivia or you move from one city to another, you need to consider this: Oruro, Potosi, Cochabamba and La Paz make up the Andean Zone, where Quecha is of great influence, (except for La Paz where the Aymara are dominant, a people and language that proceed the Incas and survived the conquest). In this region, the grammar used for the second person is “tu;” the language is spoken with a closed-mouth sound, little modulation, and it is common, due to the influence of the pre-colonial languages, that the locations of verbs, subjects and predicates are moved. The letter “ere” (r) has a whistle-like pronunciation and it is common to use the verbal circumlocution of “haber de”. In the east of Bolivia, like many regions of Latin America, people use “vos” in verb conjugations. Moreover, the way of speaking is described by visitors as “tired or heated” because nouns often lose their last sound, and which is replaced with an “u” (cansau, atareau, enojau…). The “s” sound disappears and is replaced with a “j” sound. An example? “Volamoj en uno de los avionej máj rápidoj”. Something very particular is the use of suffixes like “ingo” and “ango” to emphasis the very small or very large, respectively. “En un ratingo llegajte a ejta nota para saber lo que era cameratanga”. In such, it is the superlative of camerata in the slang of Santa Cruz, Beni and Pando, the eastern part of Bolivia.

¿Cómo fue tu evolución en la música? Toco instrumentos desde mis cinco años y siempre me interesó la producción artística. La música alternativa viene en olas y me tocó estar primero en la avalancha del rock argentino con mi banda y luego me formé un mapa artístico por toda Latinoamérica produciendo a artistas como Jorge Drexler, Café Tacvba, Los Prisioneros, Julieta Venegas, Molotov, Gustavo Cerati, La Vela Puerca, Divididos, Maldita Vecindad, Mercedes Sosa, entre muchos otros. Tu éxito te trajo muchos viajes... Yo empecé con esto porque desde niño soñaba con viajar y ya di la vuelta al mundo dos veces tocando con mi grupo Bajofondo (tango fusión). Lo que me deja haber conocido el mundo es el asombro por lo diferente que somos, pero al mismo tiempo lo mucho que tenemos en común. La música es una de esas cosas que universaliza a toda la humanidad. ¿Cuáles son las claves de un buen viajero? No perder nunca el espíritu aventurero y ser consciente de que eso significa tener momentos de satisfacción y otros de incomodidad. For me, it is also having instruments throughout the world: I leave them as I go and that way, when I return to the place, the music is waiting for me. What advice would you give someone who wants to follow in your footsteps? Life is 80% sweat and 20% inspiration. The keys for me were discipline, identity and perseverance. You have to create a work ethic that must be respected and that keeps your creativity going. Identity makes you remain faithful to who you are and allows you to find your own voice. And, lastly, the perseverance in work is what keeps you going on your path without getting off track.

El tamaño del corazón La cilindrada (que se mide en centímetros cúbicos) es la suma del tamaño de todos los cilindros. Hay que aclarar que la medida comúnmente identificada como cc es incorrecta. La forma universal de escribirla es cm3. Un automóvil promedio tiene cuatro cilindros en línea y su cilindrada va desde los 800 hasta los 2,500 cm3. Un deportivo potente tiene seis cilindros y cuenta con hasta 4,500 cm3. Con este número de cilindros ya aparece el formato en V; los cilindros están en parejas de manera diagonal formando una línea de Vs. Los vehículos de alta gama, pueden ser de 8, 10 o incluso 12 en V, superando los 10,000 cm3 de cilindrada. Consejos del experto Teniendo en cuenta estos datos, Walter Wiedamann, máster en Ingeniería Mecánica y propietario de Autocentro Bavaria, en Santa Cruz de la Sierra, aconseja para comprar un vehículo: “Primero: nunca adquirir un carro a diésel. Hay marcas, como BMW, que prohíben la venta de automóviles a diésel en Bolivia por la baja calidad del mismo, que no es apto para motores modernos (aquí se exceptúan camiones y autobuses). Segundo: no comprar motores de mucha compresión, ya que la gasolina tampoco es buena y ante mucha compresión explota (combustión descontrolada) y provoca el “tecleo”. También buscar la mayor cilindrada posible para exigir menos del combustible. Tercero: optar por el motorizado más alto posible, ya que las malas condiciones de los caminos y las lluvias tienden a poner en peligro los motores de los vehículos más bajos.

La Asociación Pro Arte y Cultura (APAC), organizadora del evento, anunció que los amantes de las artes escénicas podrán presenciar 21 obras foráneas y 25 nacionales en 102 funciones. Será un encuentro de histriones del Viejo y el Nuevo Mundo. Durante los 11 días del Fitcruz los elencos se presentarán en escenarios de Santa Cruz y Tarija. Cabe aclarar que, además de presentarse en las capitales de estos departamentos, habrá actuaciones en Samaipata, Vallegrande, Camiri, Comarapa y Yacuiba. El público podrá apreciar diferentes propuestas escénicas: desde teatro infantil, alternativo y espectáculos de danza, hasta presentaciones clowns en espacios cerrados y abiertos.

Cruzar el océano fue el sueño de grandes pilotos en el inicio de la era de la aviación. Sus hazañas marcaron épocas. At the dawn of aviation, flying across the ocean was the dream of great pilots. Such feets made there mark for years to come. Cuando la aviación era todavía un asunto de pioneros con grandes dosis de riesgo y aventura, los aviadores portugueses Gago Coutinho (1869-1959) y Sacadura Cabral (1881-1924) volaron desde Lisboa a Río de Janeiro en 1922. Fueron 79 días de viaje y 8.383 kilómetros recorridos en el hidroavión Fairey. Así conmemoraron el primer centenario de la independencia de Brasil. DESDE ESTE LADO DEL “CHARCO” Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974) cambió sus estudios de ingeniería por los aviones. Su fama llegó en 1927 al realizar en solitario el primer vuelo sin escalas entre Nueva York y París. La hazaña respondía al reto de una empresa hotelera francesa que había ofrecido 25.000 dólares para quien la realizara, y fue posible gracias al apoyo financiero de algunos empresarios de San Luis, que permitió a Lindbergh construir para la ocasión su propio avión, el Espíritu de San Luis. La importancia de aquel primer vuelo trasatlántico directo quedó resaltada por los fracasos anteriores de otros famosos aviadores mejor equipados; varios gobiernos reconocieron su mérito con condecoraciones y honores, que completaron el entusiasmo popular despertado por esta figura heroica llamada después “Águila solitaria”. AMELIA, LA INTRÉPIDA La estadounidense Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) no se conformó con saltar a la fama cuando, en 1928, se convirtió en la primera mujer en realizar como pasajera la travesía del Atlántico, en un avión que recorrió los 3.200 kilómetros que distan entre Terranova y Gales. Ese mismo año realizó varios vuelos en solitario a través de Estados Unidos y al siguiente fue la primera en cruzar sola, pilotando, el océano. En 1937 comenzó su viaje alrededor del mundo junto a un copiloto. Desde Miami realizaron un vuelo inédito en la historia de la aviación hacia Karachi (Pakistán), Calcuta (India), Rangún (Birmania), Bangkok (Tailandia), Singapur, Bandung (Indonesia), Darwin (Australia) y Lae (Papúa Nueva Guinea). Alaska, atravesó el Polo Norte, siguió sobre Groenlandia e Islandia para aterrizar luego en Stansted, uno de los cinco aeropuertos de Londres (Inglaterra), para revisiones técnicas. “A ese Hércules no le fallaba nada, pero había que seguir normas”, indica Sanjinés, que entonces era teniente coronel. Posteriormente, la aeronave, cuya tripulación era completada por el copiloto David Echalar, el navegante Mario Ochoa, el ingeniero de vuelo Carlos Melgar y el jefe de carga Epifanio Patón, atravesó varios países europeos. El Hércules CP-1564 o L-100-30 era un avión propulsado por cuatro motores turbohélice, que se fabricó en Estados Unidos desde 1960. Tenía una longitud de 34,36 m, una altura de 11,66 m y podía transportar hasta 70,3 toneladas de peso. Poco antes de llegar a destino, Sanjinés recuerda un inconveniente al ingresar en espacio aéreo turco. “Solicité permiso para sobrevolar y al decir Bolivia creyeron que dije Libia, y no me autorizaron. The talking llama. Cure for Aids Un equipo de investigadores de varios países, liderados por la médica Laura Mc Coy del University College de Londres, comprobó que los anticuerpos de la llama, nuestro camélido sudamericano, podían neutralizar al VIH, el agente patógeno que, según la Onusida, en la actualidad vive en 35 millones de humanos. ¿Cómo se da esa neutralización? Los anticuerpos tienen dos cadenas de proteínas y funcionan “como si tiraras un cañón, a ver qué pescas”, mientras que los de una sola cadena — los de las llamas— apuntan mejor y dan en el blanco. De acuerdo con el estudio, tienen una efectividad altísima: anulan, in vitro, el 96 % de las cepas de VIH con las que son enfrentados. La novedosa exploración podría llevar a la producción de una vacuna eficaz contra el sida, pues si progresan las investigaciones se aplicaría a un individuo un antígeno atenuado, o muerto, del VIH, a fin de que provoque su propio ejército de defensa y luche. Ojalá sea factible.

Investigative teams from various countries led by Dr. Laura McCoy of University College London, proved that the antibodies of the llama, a South American animal, can neutralize HIV, the pathogenic agent that, according to UNAIDS, currently lives in 35 million humans. How does the neutralization work? The antibodies have two protein chains and act “like shots in a bucket or a scatter gun approach, to see what you catch” while those of a single chain - those of the llama - shoot more directly and hit the target. According to the study it is highly effective: in vitro, they annul 96% of the HIV strains. This novel discovery could lead to the creation of an effective vaccine against Aids, that is if the investigations progress and result in creating defense system in people. Hopefully, it will work.

Such was the show of Las Magníficas (a group of fashion models), that its creator, Pablo Manzoni, titled “Once upon a time.” With splendid, movable scenery mounted in the Sirionó Room of Fexpocruz, the highest paid models of Bolivia walked the runway showing off diverse brands, including Amaszonas and Paceña.
