Viajando solo EXPERIENCIA ÚNICA Flying solo. Unique experience Cada vez son más las personas que se animan a descubrir el mundo en solitario. Muchos estudios arrojan la importancia de esta tendencia con el fin de conocerse y adquirir confianza en sí mismo. Por lo que es positivo si deseas reflexionar, resolver problemas o curar heridas. Como no todos los destinos son iguales, para cada uno convendrá prepararse. Investiga si la zona que rodea a tu alojamiento es segura, cómo es la cultura, a quién debes acudir en caso de emergencia... Tener todos los datos y números de teléfonos es esencial. Infórmate si en tu hotel hay wifi gratuito: así podrás comunicarte con los tuyos cuando llegues (y cada cierto tiempo) sin gastar una fortuna. También puedes comprar una tarjeta SIM local y ahorrarte los gastos de roaming. ¡Ah! En cuanto al hotel, busca uno simple y económico. Generalmente sus anfitriones están dispuestos a dar consejos y direcciones o, simplemente, compartir una charla. Por último, guarda a buen recaudo tu pasaporte, tarjetas de crédito y dinero, y no dejes tu equipaje fuera de tu vista. Viajando solo, cuidarte dependerá solo de ti. to avoid the roaming costs. Ah! As for the hotel, look for something simple and economical. Generally, the hosts are willing to give advice and directions, and will chat with you. Lastly, keep your passport, credit card, and money in a safe place, and don’t let your luggage out of sight. When traveling solo, taking care of yourself is up to you.

LA PALABRA JUSTA The fair word
“El mundo nunca debe quedar sin Galeano”, pedía una periodista mientras un sentido silencio de duelo inundaba a luchadores de la justicia social y militantes de la estética literaria en todo el planeta. Era 13 de abril de 2015, Eduardo Galeano había fallecido a los 74 años. “Yo escribo para quienes no pueden leerme: los de abajo, los que esperan desde hace siglos en la cola de la historia”, decía el periodista y escritor uruguayo, que sostuvo esa consigna en la poesía y fue contundente con su estilo literario blindado en personajes encontrados y un amor desmedido por los más desfavorecidos. Literato de izquierda, con la palabra como arma y azote de los dictadores, amante de la buena vida, apasionado del fútbol y atento a todos los cambios sociales, Galeano perteneció al “club de los insobornables” porque mantuvo hasta el final de sus días sus expectativas de justicia y libertad. “The world should never be left without Galeano”, said a journalist as a painful silence came over all those who have fought for social justice and all those who love aesthetic literature, from all across the planet. It was April 13, 2015, and Eduardo Galeano had passed away at 74 years of age. “I write for those who cannot read me; those from below, those who for centuries have been waiting on the tail of history,” said this Uruguayan journalist and writer. He followed this precept in poetry and was blunt in his literary style armed with characters and excessive love of the least favored in society. A writer of the left, using words as arms and whips of the dictators, lover of the good life, passionate about soccer and attentive to social change, Galeano pertained to the “Club of the incorruptible” because, until his final days, he remained faithful to his hopes for justice and freedom. 12

At CasaCor, Giovanna Murta and Amaszonas presented a house that was inspired by travel.
Las casas de juguete de la arquitecta Giovanna Murta son el sueño de cualquier niño y lo que un adulto desearía tener, claro, a su medida. Dentro de ellas hay un mundo donde todo es pequeño y bello, y donde todos dejan volar su imaginación y sus ganas de jugar. “Al construir esta casa me inspiré en el pasado e hice que todo hablara de viajes y de familia”, explica Murta, quien encontró en la línea aérea Amaszonas un aliado idóneo para crear una minimansión para el espacio lúdico de CasaCor.

The toy houses of architect Giovanna Murta are the dream of any child and are what any adult would like to have, and of course, all is made to size. Inside of them, there is a world where everything is small and beautiful, and where the imagination takes flight and where everyone wants to play. “While constructing this house, I was inspired in the past and made everything address trips and family”, explains Murta, who found an ally in the Amaszonas Airline and was able to create this mini-mansion for the CasaCor. 14

PURA ADRENALINA Dakar returns. Pure adrenaline En 2016, el Dakar tendrá un inédito recorrido de norte a sur. Comenzará el 3 de enero con la largada en Lima. Atravesará todo el sur de Perú, rozando Cusco y Arequipa –destinos de Amaszonas-, luego ingresará a Bolivia para cruzar La Paz, Oruro y Potosí, con el lago Titicaca y el Salar de Uyuni como las etapas estrellas (todos destinos de nuestra línea aérea). En el norte argentino, la carrera tomará rumbo a Salta, otro destino de Amaszonas, donde será la etapa de descanso y comenzará la recta final que definirá a los campeones, que llegarán a Rosario el 16 de enero para subir al podio. Cabe recalcar que, por primera vez, todas las categorías de la competencia (motos, cuadriciclos, autos y camiones) pasarán por Bolivia. Los organizadores del evento, Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), dividen el Dakar en tres

It will cross southern Peru, bordering Cuzco and Arequipa - destinations of Amaszonas - and then will enter Bolivia traveling through La Paz, Oruro and Potosi, with Lake Titicaca and the Uyuni Salt Flats as important stages of the race (all of which are destinations for our airline). In the north of Argentina, the race travel toward Salta, where there will be a day of rest. Then, the closing stage will begin, thus defining the champions who will arrive to Rosario on January 16. It is worth highlighting that for the first time, all the competing categories (motorcycles, Quadra tracks, cars and trucks) will race through Bolivia.

Perú vuelve a la competencia después de cuatro años, Bolivia se afianza con la carrera completa y Argentina queda como único país presente en todos los Dakar sudamericanos. El camino está trazado, ahora resta saber quién dejará su marca en el camino a la gloria.
The organizers of the event, Amaury Sport Organization (ASO), divide the Dakar in three stages; the first phase will be in the desert of the coastal region of Peru, with “situations similar to the Sahara Desert”; the second phase will be through Bolivia, where the climatic and geographic conditions of the high altitude planes and the salt flat “will push the competitors’ resistance to the limit in a test reaching the highest demands of competition in the world.” And finally, the heat of northern Argentina will be a perfect place to experience the emotion of the final stage. Peru is back in the competition after a fouryear absence, Bolivia secures the participation of all categories for a complete race, and Argentina remains the only country represented in all of the South American Dakar competitions.

En Japón In Japan El hotel Casa Madrona, en Sausalito (EE UU), pasará a la historia como el primero del mundo en utilizar un dron en su servicio de habitaciones. El artilugio, que aman los aeromodelistas y hasta los agentes de la CIA, adquiere en este lugar una dimensión glamurosa digna de una buena escena de James Bond. El pequeño hotel, fundado en 1885 como una mansión de 11 habitaciones, se alquila entero al precio de $us 25.000 la noche, lo que también da derecho al uso de drones que pueden llevar botellas de champán a tu habitación. The Hotel Casa Madrona, in Sausalito (USA), will go down in history as the first hotel to use a drone for room service. The device, that model builders and CIA agents love, gives this place a glamorous dimension, worthy of a scene in a James Bond movie. The little hotel, built in 1885 as an 11-room mansion, can be completely rented for a price of $25,000 per night, a fee which also allows you the right to use the drones to carry bottles of champagne to your room. If you only want to have a party, the price is $10,000. The success of this service has launched the creation of other drones capable of serving other aperitifs and even cookies.

Es capaz de moverse por sí mismo, llamar al ascensor y transportar artículos, como toallas extras o el cargador de celular que tanto solicitan a recepción. En vez de propinas acepta tuits que hablen bien de su trabajo, otro rasgo en el que se parece a los humanos. Pero estás equivocado si creíste que solo en Silicon Valley, zona donde están estos dos hoteles y las centrales de Google, Yahoo, Apple, Oracle e Intel, podrían existir avances tecnológicos tan importantes al servicio de la hotelería. En la reciente presentación del nuevo NH Collection Eurobuilding, en Madrid, los asistentes comprobaron sorprendidos cómo hologramas en 3D hacían uso de la palabra e intervenían desde otros países en un acto digno de la ceremonia de los Oscar. Por otro lado, este hotel high tech, el más vanguardista de España, cuenta con cuatro habitaciones living lab, donde diferentes empresas y proveedores prueban sus más novedosos artilugios. Actualmente, dichas alcobas cuentan con muebles con superficies inductoras que permiten recargar baterías de smartphones sin necesidad de enchufes y sistemas de video para comunicarse con la recepción. In a recent presentation of the new NH Collection Eurobuilding, in Madrid, the attendees were surprised that 3D holograms spoke and participated from other countries in an event worthy of the Oscars. At the same time, this high tech hotel, the most avant-garde of Spain, has four living lab rooms, where different companies and providers test out their novelties. Currently, the rooms have furniture with cell phone chargers, so that you don’t need an outlet to charge a Smartphone and also they have a video system that communicates directly with reception. It is real-life science fiction.

El artista Al Farrow recicla armas para crear templos de diferentes religiones. Sus esculturas llaman a detener las guerras en nombre de Dios y son una forma de crear objetos de contemplación para evitar la violencia. The Farrow artist recycles weapons to create temples of different religions. His sculptures are called to stop the wars in the name of God and are a way of creating objects of contemplation to avoid violence. Armas, balas y calaveras. Mezquitas, iglesias y sinagogas. Es difícil, e incluso imprudente juntar estas dos listas, sin embargo el artista Al Farrow lo hizo y creó belleza y un impactante mensaje de paz que da la vuelta al mundo. Con “Reliquaries”, la muestra de 68 esculturas elaboradas con materiales reciclados de la guerra, el estadounidense se une a célebres artistas como Picasso, John Lennon y Bansky, que usaron su talento para llamar a la paz. Sobre el tema, el diario The New York Times comentó en un editorial: “Si bien su estética de fondos negros y armas como pilares de templos puede ser una fuerte crítica a la cercanía entre iglesias y guerras en la actualidad, el mensaje principal es la capacidad de crear belleza y fe dando un nuevo significado a objetos de muerte”. Para su trabajo, Farrow recreó las más representativas iglesias de algunas de las más masivas religiones, y sumó objetos de culto como candelabros, rosarios y confesionarios, logrando una hermosura y meticulosidad en los detalles que detienen a todo el que pasa por la Catherine Clark Gallery, de San Francisco, donde las obras se exhiben. El escultor no ha divulgado el destino de su exhibición, pero ya trascendió que sus obras podrían hacer una gira en Estados Unidos, para luego verse en museos de Europa.

When writing about the topic, The New York Times editorialized, “While the aesthetic of the black backgrounds and weapons used as pillars of religious temples could be a strong critique of the link between religion and current wars, the main message is the capacity to create beauty and faith, by giving a new purpose to objects of death”. For his work, Farrow recreated religious buildings representative of the mass religions, and added worshiped objects like candelabras, rosaries and confessionals, thus achieving a beautiful and meticulous detail that makes everyone who passes by the Catherine Clark Gallery in San Francisco (where the exhibit is held) stop and look. The sculptor has not divulged the destination of his exhibition, but it has leaked that the show could make a tour of the USA, and then be seen in museums in Europe.

Es una enfermedad de origen africano, que en la lengua de los makonde de Tanzania y Mozambique significa “estar doblado de dolor”. Los afectados por el nuevo mal producido por los mosquitos aedes aegypti y aedes albopictus no dejan de aumentar en Latinoamérica. It is an illness originating in Africa, which in the Mokonde language of the Tanzania and Mozambique means “to be bent in pain”. The number of those affected in Latin America continues to rise, and this disease is spread by the aedes aegypi and aedes albopictus mosquitoes.
La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) no recomienda restringir los viajes hacia los países latinoamericanos afectados con la chikungunya, por lo que los viajeros con sospecha de haber contraído el virus y experimentando los síntomas hasta siete días después de su desplazamiento, deben buscar inmediata atención médica. Pero, ¿qué es la chikungunya? Es una infección trasmitida por los mosquitos aedes aegypti y aedes albopictus. The World Health Organization (WHO) does not recommend restricting travel to the Latin American countries infected with chikungunya, but does say that those travelers who suspect they may have contracted the disease or who have symptoms within seven days of leaving the region, should seek immediate medical attention. But, what is chikungunya? It is an infection transmitted by the aedes aegypti y aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Más allá de fiebre, la chikungunya produce otros síntomas, tales como dolores musculares y de cabeza, náuseas, cansancio y erupciones cutáneas que pueden diagnosticarse erróneamente como dengue en zonas donde éste es frecuente. La diferencia está en el agudo dolor de articulaciones del nuevo mal. La OMS aclara que la mayoría de los pacientes se recuperan completamente, pero en algunos casos los dolores articulares pueden durar varios meses o incluso años. Se han descrito casos ocasionales con complicaciones oculares, neurológicas y cardiacas, y también con molestias gastrointestinales. Hasta el momento, no existe ningún antivírico específico ni vacuna para tratar la fiebre chikungunya. Lo único que se puede hacer es quitar los dolores y, en el mejor de los casos, prevenirla: eliminando al mosquito y sus criaderos. Es sencillo, solo es cuestión de ponerse manos a la obra. In addition to the fever, chinkungunya causes other symptoms such as muscle pain, headache, nausea, exhaustion, and skin rashes that can be mistakenly diagnosed as dengue, as it is found in areas where that illness is also frequent. The difference is that this new disease also causes acute joint paint. WHO states that the majority of patients experience a complete recovery, but in some cases the joint pain lasts for several months or even years. There have been a few cases where vision, neurological and cardiac complications have been found, as well as others with gastrointestinal problems. Presently, there is neither an anti-virus nor vaccine available against chikungunya. The only treatment available focuses on diminishing the pain, and in the best cases, preventing it altogether by eliminating the mosquitoes and their breeding grounds. It is simple, just a question of getting to work.

Parece un halcón escudriñando el cielo, solo baja la mirada para certificar en su celular el modelo, origen, destino, velocidad y altura de los aviones de alrededor (la aplicación se llama Flight Radar). Cuando está cerca su objetivo toma la cámara (con un potente lente teleobjetivo) y empieza la ráfaga de disparos hasta que la caza está completa y el ave metálica, el Bombardier CRJ 200 de Amaszonas, queda inmortalizada en su mejor ángulo. El fotógrafo es Eduardo Salvatierra y su página en Facebook, Bolivia Spotter, superó los 15.000 seguidores en apenas seis meses y ahora es un referente del spotting en la región. Una tendencia que crece en Bolivia, un país con trayectoria, escuela y amor por la aeronáutica. It looks like a falcon investigating the sky, only it lowers the look to certify in his cellular one the model, origin, destination, speed and height of the planes of around (the application is called Flight Radar). When it is nearby his aim takes the chamber (with a powerful lens teleobjetivo) and it begins the blast of shots until the hunt is complete and the metallic bird, the Bombardier CRJ 200 of Amaszonas, remains immortalized in his better angle. The photographer is Eduardo Salvatierra and his page in Facebook, Bolivia Spotter, it overcame 15.000 followers in only six months and now it is a modal of the spotting in the region. A trend that grows in Bolivia, a country with path, school and love for the aeronautics.

Aeronautics, a passion NUBES La turbulencia más común es la causada por las nubes verticales con forma de yunque, comúnmente llamadas cumulonimbos. Suelen producir lluvias intensas y tormentas eléctricas. Son detectadas por los radares meteorológicos de los aviones y pueden ser evitadas por la tripulación.
ESTELA TURBULENTA Toda aeronave, desde el instante en que abandona la superficie y emprende el vuelo, provoca una serie de perturbaciones en el aire que circula a su alrededor, generando varias reacciones físicas y efectos aerodinámicos, entre los cuales encontramos la estela turbulenta o vórtice. En condiciones normales, dicha situación afectará a los aviones que sigan o crucen su trayectoria por detrás o por debajo.

Aprendamos juntos ¿QUÉ ES UNA TURBULENCIA? Olvídate del miedo de los “sacudones” al volar. Son baches en el cielo. Observando el cielo podemos tener la impresión de que el aire está quieto. Sin embargo, aunque
semos circulando por una carretera con muchos baches seguidos; en otras, una repentina sen-
no lo apreciemos con claridad, está en continuo movimiento. Este movimiento no siempre es uniforme, rectilíneo y ordenado. En algunas zonas aparecen perturbaciones en forma de remolinos e, incluso, lo que podríamos llamar como “olas del cielo”. En los aviones las turbulencias se notan de diferentes maneras: en ocasiones, como si estuvié-
sación de ligereza o pesadez y, también, como un movimiento ondulatorio suave. Lo que debe quedar claro es que las turbulencias no significan que haya un problema con el avión. Las tripulaciones de Amaszonas están capacitadas para evitar lo máximo posible las zonas de turbulencia.

FRENTE FRÍO Las masas de aire circulan de una región a otra como las corrientes marinas. El paso de masas de aire frío a caliente y viceversa alteran zonas como consecuencia del choque, que es lo que se conoce como ciclón, borrasca o depresión.

En esta 44va versión del campeonato participarán las 10 selecciones de la Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol y dos invitadas, México y Jamaica (la segunda presente por primera vez en el torneo). Chile organiza el evento deportivo por séptima vez y para ello alistó ocho sedes: Antofagasta, La Serena, Viña del Mar, Valparaíso, Santiago, Rancagua, Concepción y Temuco. PIERNAS BENDITAS Manuel Francisco dos Santos tenía sus pies girados 80 grados hacia adentro y la pierna izquierda seis centímetros más larga que la derecha. Cuando todavía era un garoto de siete años le dieron lo más parecido a una cadena perpetua en su natal Brasil: le dijeron que no podría jugar fútbol. Aunque lo intentó, no logró obedecer esa prohibición y pronto el milagro fue notorio: su condición hacía imposible adivinar hacia donde daría su próximo paso. La fama de ser el mejor gambeteador que se había visto no se hizo esperar y así llegó a Botafogo, club donde se terminó de acomodar como lateral derecho. Dejando rivales caídos con las piernas hechas un nudo, arribó a la selección brasileña y con ella consiguió dos copas mundiales (Suiza 1958 y Chile 1962). Con “Pelé” formó una mítica dupla que quedó en la historia de este deporte. Inmortalizado como “Garrincha”, todavía se recuerda como, cuando él jugaba, los estadios rebalsaban de gente que buscaba ver a este inmortal que se bailó todas las normas.

BLESSED LEGS Manuel Francisco dos Santos had toes that pointed inward at 80 degrees and his left leg was 6cm longer than his right leg. When he was still a seven-year-old garoto he was given the closest thing to a life-sentence in Brazil: he was told he couldn’t play soccer. Although he tried, he was unable to obey this prohibition and soon news of his miracle was widely known. His unlikely condition predicted where he would go next. The fame of being the best dribbler ever seen soon arrived and he started to play for Botafogo, a club where he played the right forward position. Leaving fallen and cramped rivals behind, he reached the Brazilian National Team and there he won two World Cups (Switzerland in 1958 and Chile 1962). Together with Pele, he formed part of a mythical pair that has gone down in soccer history. Immortalized as “Garrincha” it is still remembered how, when he played, the stadiums overflowed with people who wanted to see this immortal dance his play.

HONOR ARGENTINO El doctor, el abogado, el cura y el hincha del club. Argentina es un país donde el honor de ser reconocido como un verdadero fanático pesa más que las condecoraciones de cualquier general y así como José de San Martín, el libertador del país, el fanático también tiene su fecha conmemorativa: el 12 de diciembre es el Día Mundial del Hincha de Boca Juniors. TODO ES VÁLIDO El año pasado hinchas y jugadores veían desesperados como su club, Cobreloa de Calama, se iba al descenso. Como último recurso contrataron a un síquico para que les prediga el futuro. Éste, entrado en trance, les comunicó que veía festejos y no lágrimas, siempre y cuando enterraran algunas hierbas -y otras ofrendas- en los alrededores de la cancha. De ahí en adelante el equipo ganó todos los partidos y no descendió. Diez años antes, la Universidad de Chile no lograba crear un plantel firme y para empeorar la suerte, Patricio Yáñez, su refuerzo estrella, incurría en constantes lesiones. Marcos Kaplún, dirigente del grupo cuenta: “Organicé una ceremonia con todo el equipo en la sede del club y quemamos una muleta del ‘Pato’ y resultó”; el futbolista pudo jugar todo el torneo de corrido. Además, el síquico Carlos Meschi fue contratado y junto con su esposa -que era médium- se encargaron de alejar las malas energías. Ese año “la U” consigió el campeonato. 48

PASIÓN AMAZÓNICA Amazonía adentro, en Bolivia, existe una aldea de 30 casas donde lo primero que se divisa es un letrero pintado en varias tablas: Manchester. Ese es el nombre de esta comunidad cuyo punto central, en lugar de plaza, es un campo de fútbol. En 2010, los exploradores Chris Smith y Liz Peel se propusieron unir el Old Trafford, mítico estadio del Manchester United, y este espacio deportivo en mitad de la selva boliviana y narraron perplejos: “Cada tarde, antes de oscurecer, todas las personas dejan sus quehaceres y se dirigen a la cancha para un gran juego de fútbol”. Los locales levantaron los hombros cuando les preguntaron sobre el origen de su costumbre y se limitaron a armar un partido en honor a las visitas.

Son 550 hectáreas con campos de golf, canchas de tenis y polo, club house y un hotel de lujo, el Grace. Between mountains and vineyards, the Estate of Cafayate submerges us in the calmness of nature. It has 550 hectares with golf courses, tennis courts, sand volleyball and polo. And for a place to rest in full luxury and modernity, there is the Grace Hotel.
El título de esta crónica más que una metáfora es una realidad. Recorrer en vehículo los 200 kilómetros que separan Salta de Cafayate (norte argentino) bien valen la pena cuando se llega a una estancia que tomó el nombre del pueblo que alberga sus 550 hectáreas a 1.700 m.s.n.m. La Estancia de Cafayate me abrió sus puertas cuando ya a Venus la acompañaban algunas estrellas y el frío hacía necesario el abrigo. Mis anfitriones estaban apenados porque las sombras de la noche no me permitieron disfrutar de los paisajes del camino, descritos como algunos de los más sorprendentes del mundo. De regreso habría que confirmarlo. 60

The title of this chronicle more than a metaphor is a reality. Traveling by vehicle the 200 kilometers that separate Salta from Cafayate (in north Argentina) is worth the trip when you reach the estate that took its named from the town which hosts its 550 hectares located at 1,700 meters above sea level. The Estancia of Cafayate opened its doors to me when Venus was already accompanying several stars and a cold temperature made a coat necessary. My hosts were saddened that nightfall prevented me from enjoying the scenery along the trip, described as some of the most surprising scenery of the world. Upon my return, this truth was confirmed. Es de mañana y me resisto a dejar la habitación que me asignaron en el Grace Cafayate, ubicado dentro de la estancia y parte de un grupo internacional de hoteles boutique de lujo. El confort es absoluto con una decoración minimalista de blanco y marrones. Pero al correr las cortinas mi espíritu se embelesa al ver las montañas azules, los viñedos en transición para la próxima vendimia y la inmensidad verde. Es hora de vivir. Un buen desayuno y a explorar la estancia conformada por 360 terrenos, muchos ya con residencias privadas de diseños llamativos y jardines abiertos o pequeñas bardas de piedra, en vecindad con los viñedos. El clima está templado (21º C) y el cielo límpido, lo que hace resaltar aún más el verde del campo de golf de 18 hoyos, diseñado por el famoso arquitecto estadounidense Bob Cupp. Más al fondo, la cancha de polo y las dunas parecen fundirse con las montañas. El jardín del Club House evoca los cuadros de Claude Monet y estando allí es imposible no sentirse inmerso ellos. La galería de este espacio, con una tienda de recuerdos incluida, es perfecta para tomarse una copa de vino o servirse algo de comer, si es que no se prefiere hacer un picnic en los alrededores, los que me recordaron al impresionista francés. ¡Nada sería más agradable! given at the Hotel Grace Cafayate, located inside of the estate and which is part of an international chain of luxury boutique hotels. Absolute comfort is provided; the decoration is minimalist in whites and browns. Upon opening the curtains, my spirit is captivated by the blue mountains, the vineyards in transition for the next harvest, and the immense greenness. It is time to live. After a good breakfast, I’m off to explore the estate that is made up of 360 parcels of land, many with private residences with distinct designs, open gardens and small stone walls, all neighboring the vineyards. The climate is temperate, (21º C) and the sky is clear, which makes the greenness of the 18hole gold course, designed by the famous American architect Bob Cupp, stand out that much more. Beyond, there is a polo field, and dunes that melt into the mountains. The garden at the Club House is reminiscent of paintings of Claude Monet and being there you cannot resist feeling immersed in them. The viewing area, with a souvenir shop, is prefect for having a glass of wine or something to eat; that is if you don’t prefer having a picnic in the surrounding areas, those that reminded me of the French Impressionist. Nothing would be more pleasant!

PARA EL RELAJAMIENTO TOTAL En La Estancia de Cayafate todo está pensado para la recreación y relajación, y por ello cuentan con el Athletic Club & Spa, equipado con un moderno gimnasio, piscina temperada cubierta, salas de masajes y tratamientos corporales (tanto para damas como para varones), saunas, baño a vapor y jacuzzi al aire libre. Algo curioso en la estancia es la existencia de una vegetación tan dispar como el cactus, el agave americano, la perowskia violeta, la sericura, entre otras plantas y árboles como el sauce llorón. FOR TOTAL RELAXATION On the Estate of Cayafate everything is planned thinking about recreation and relaxation, and therefore there is the Athletic Club & Spa, with a modern gym, heated pool, massage rooms and body treatments (for men and for women), wet and dry saunas, and an outdoor jacuzzi. These suggestions have an added benefit: a view of the mountains, which are mountains to fall in love with! The Club also has squash courts, tennis courts, and a sand volleyball court, as well as more gardens with lagoons where you become entranced by the sounds of nature. A curiosity of the estate is the existence of vegetation so diverse that there are cactus, the American agave, the perowskia violet, and other plants and trees like the weeping willow. 62

DESCUBRIENDO SABORES En mi almuerzo en un restaurante en Cafayate probé las tradicionales humitas con queso de cabra, parecidas a los tamales de otras latitudes de América, solo que éstas llevan un tinte dulzón rojo otorgado por tomate machacado. La deliciosa carne argentina no podía faltar en la mesa acompañada de papas y cebollas. De sobremesa, un paseo por el pueblo inundado de bodegas de vino con las más tentadoras ofertas en variedades: cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, malbec, merlot, syrah, pinot noir, tannat, torrontés, chardonnay, etc. En un lado de su plaza central, tiendas de artesanías y, al otro costado, pintorescos restaurantes ofreciendo empanadas, locro, carbonada y cordero. Y hablando de cordero, mi cena en el restaurante del hotel Grace Cafayate consistió en un sabroso plato de cabrito en reducción de vino tinto y culantro. Lo disfruté pese a la faringitis que me había dejado una tormenta a la que me expuse en Santa Cruz, previo a mi partida. En la segunda y última noche en la hacienda me sentí como cosmonauta mirando al cielo: las estrellas fulgían sin que una gorda luna les pueda hacer sombra. DISCOVERING FLAVORS At lunch in a restaurant in Cafayate, I tried the traditional tamales with goat cheese, which are similar to tamales in other parts of the Americas, only that these have a slight red hue as they contain crushed tomatoes. You can’t miss eating the delicious Argentine beef, which is served with potatoes and onions. After a bit of conversation, there is a walk through this town filled with wine cellars that offer a tempting variety of wines: cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, malbec, merlot, syrah, pinot noir, tanat, torrontés, chardonnay, etc. On one side of the central plaza, there are artisan shops and on the other side, picturesque restaurants offering empanadas, meat stews, and lamb. And speaking of lamb, my dinner at the restaurant at the Grace Cafayate Hotel consisted of a tasty goat dish in a red wine and coriander reduction. I enjoyed it even though I had a soar throat, which I caught in a downpour in Santa Cruz prior to my departure. On the second and last night at the estate I felt like a cosmonaut looking at the sky: the stars shined down without letting the full moon diminish their brightness.

LA ODIOSA DESPEDIDA Es mi última mañana en La Estancia de Cafayate y en el hotel Grace. Un tour por sus instalaciones es imperioso para poder hablar de él con fundamentos. Tiene 52 habitaciones, de las cuales 12 se encuentran en una sola edificación y el resto está distribuidas en vilas o departamentos equipados que rodean el complejo. El Grace Cafayate ofrece a sus huéspedes los servicios de spa, piscina abierta, TV por cable, wifi, restaurante gourmet, lounge con sala de habanos y un bar de los vinos más exquisitos de la zona. Saliendo de la estancia, la imagen del camino flanqueado por viñedos es imborrable y ya rumbo a Salta compruebo la belleza del paisaje de la que me habían hablado al llegar: allí las montañas fueron moldeadas a su antojo por el viento y las tiñó de rojo y ocre para nuestra fascinación. A DETESTABLE GOODBYE This is my last morning at the Estate of Cafayate and at the Grace Hotel. A tour of the installations is imperative in order to be able to talk about them properly. There are 52 rooms, of which only 12 are located in one building and the rest are distributed in villas or apartments that surround the complex. The Grace Cafayate offers guests services including a spa, outdoor pool, cable TV, WiFi, a gourmet restaurant, a lounge with cigar room, and a wine bar with the most exquisite wines of the area. Leaving the estate, the image of the road flanked on both sides by vineyards cannot be erased and on the trip back to Salta the beauty of the landscape I had been told about is shown to be true: the mountains were molded by the wind and dyed in red and ochre for our fascination. 64

La geografía que se pinta en la ventanilla del avión quita el aliento: la costa del Pacífico se curva formando penínsulas donde modernos edificios parecen estirarse en busca de la mejor vista al mar. La alargada ciudad -de apenas un kilómetro de anchoes un paréntesis entre un océano azul y cerros de arena de 400 metros de alto que, como muros, parecen protegerla del desierto más árido del mundo: el Atacama. El encuentro de ambas inmensidades hace de esta urbe chilena una meca mundial para deportes como el surf, parapente y sandboarding (surf de arena) y esto, a su vez, hace que Iquique, aunque respire historia en su centro histórico, se mueva al ritmo de las actividades al aire libre, una variada vida nocturna y el encuentro de culturas jóvenes de todas partes del planeta. Allí, grupos de entrenamiento al aire libre, escuelas de surf, paseos de colegios, adultos mayores y oficinistas hacen de la playa un punto de encuentro y de esparcimiento. Pero el mar para Iquique es mucho más que para la diversión. Grandes buques cargados de contenedores llegan al puerto desde sitios lejanos para mover el comercio y la economía en la región. A ello se suman los puntos de pesca donde los restaurantes se proveen de ingredientes frescos que hacen de la gastronomía local un lujo de la mano del mariscal, el ceviche y la paila de mariscos.

In a place where rain is a myth that the foreigners talk about, but which no local has ever seen fall on this land, the enormous palm tress and the green oasis that multiplies along the coast are shocking to all. It is there where groups training in the open air, surf schools, school trips, older adults and office workers together make the beach a meeting and recreational place. MONTANDO AL DRAGÓN “Esta es la duna urbana más grande del mundo con 300 metros de caída y tres kilómetros de extensión”, explica Cristopher Guerrero, instructor de sandbording, al llegar a la cima del Cerro Dragón, un morro de arena clara que bordea Iquique y desde el que se puede contemplar la ciudad a plenitud. Sus alumnos son de varias nacionalidades y hay pistas para novatos y expertos. Una inolvidable experiencia y una gran postal están garantizadas.

A VUELO DE PÁJARO Iquique es uno de los pocos lugares en la Tierra donde casi todos los días se puede ser un pájaro. Es una de las capitales mundiales del parapente por su clima y su geografía. Patricio Palma trabajó 13 años en un banco hasta que un día lo invitaron a practicar el deporte y descubrió que volar era su pasión. Entonces creó PuroVuelo y ahora recibe a miles de turistas que vuelan como en ninguna otra parte y que se entrenan para hacer el periplo aéreo Antofagasta-Iquique, una de las travesías de parapente más largas y esperadas del orbe. El sol se esconde, el paseo peatonal Baquedano enciende sus luces y allí converge la juventud cargada de anécdotas de proezas en cielo, mar y tierra. Todos se unen a la salud de una ciudad de bares centenarios y renovados espacios al aire libre, donde iquiqueños y visitantes siguen llenando la ciudad de historia y vida.

Patricio Palma worked on a boat for 13 years, until one day he was invited to try the sport and found that flying was his passion. He then created PuroVuelo (pure flight) and now thousands of tourists fly with him in a way unlike in any other place. And here people train to make the air journey from Antofagasta-Iquique, one of the longest and most wanted paragliding adventures on the globe. LA REVISTA VUELA MÁS ALTO The magazine flies higher A seis meses de su “vuelo inaugural” en Amaszonas, la revista de esta línea aérea fue presentada oficialmente a la prensa en un cóctel ofrecido en el patio de Casa Cor Bolivia. Los ejecutivos de Lola Group, empresa editora de la revista Amaszonas, reunieron a los anunciantes de la publicación para compartir con ellos sus primeros meses de éxito: 80.000 pasajeros disfrutan del contenido mensualmente en todos los vuelos de la aerolínea. The plant of the CBN Santa Cruz was recognized as the best of Latin America and the second best of the world. “Esforzarse por ser el mejor es parte de la cultura de la empresa”, afirmó Ricardo Pacheco, gerente de la planta productora de la Cervecería Boliviana Nacional - Santa Cruz, tras haber sido reconocida como la mejor de Latinoamérica. Este premio fue otorgado por ABInBev, empresa cervecera líder a escala mundial, después de que la fábrica recibiera la visita de un grupo auditor global, que verificó y validó el alto nivel de implementación obtenido en el sistema integrado de gestión industrial. Fruto de esta distinción, la planta CBN Santa Cruz pudo representar a Latinoamérica, por tercera vez consecutiva, en la competencia que ABinBEV realiza, donde obtuvo el segundo lugar como la mejor planta del mundo. Al respecto, David Penazzi, gerente industrial de la CBN, resaltó que “Esto solo confirma la calidad de nuestros productos, el cuidado que ponemos en el proceso de elaboración y la vocación que tienen los 194 trabajadores y trabajadoras de la planta para dejar el nombre de Bolivia en alto”.

Dagmar Dümchen es una alemana que lleva 29 años dedicada al folclore boliviano. Vive en La Paz, donde desarrolla su profesión de fisioterapeuta y, con polleras y trenzas, le canta al amor en varios ritmos latinoamericanos. Tiene 12 discos grabados. Dagmar Dümchen is a German who for the last 29 years has been a Bolivian folklore musician. MÚSICA EN EL CORAZÓN Si bien Dagmar Dümchen empezó a cantar en las guitarreadas universitarias, cuando en Latinoamérica se protestaba por las injusticias de las dictaduras, fue a partir de la década de los 80 que sus críticas melódicas se transformaron en cantos de amor, con los que se identifica plenamente. “Es música llena de sentimiento y poesía”, describe. “Antes de venir a Bolivia, viví con mis padres en Costa Rica. En casa teníamos dos discos de música andina que al escucharlos me emocionaban muchísimo, lloraba por sus ritmos profundos y melancólicos”. A lo largo de 29 años de carrera artística, tiene 12 discos grabados y 19 composiciones registradas. Ha participado en innumerables festivales internacionales, y varias ciudades alemanas, gracias a ella, saben de huayños, bailecitos, cuecas, chacareras, zambas, kullawadas, morenadas y otros ritmos latinoamericanos. Aunque en La Paz ejerce su profesión de fisioterapeuta, es la música la que lleva en el alma y hasta en los huesos.

MUSIC IN THE HEART Dagmar Dümchen started singing at guitar singa-longs in the universities, at a time when Latin America was protesting the injustices of the dictatorships. But it was during the 1980’s when her melodies became love songs, and ones that she directly identifies with. “Music is full of sentiment and poetry”, she describes. “Before coming to Bolivia, I lived with my parents in Costa Rica. We had two records of Andean music, both of which moved me; I would cry listening to the deep and melancholic rhythms.” After 29 years as an artist, she has 12 records, and 19 trademarked compositions. She has participated in numerous international festivals and toured various German cities. Thanks to her, they now are familiar with different types of Bolivian music such as huayños, bailecitos, cuecas, chacareras, zambas, kullawadas, and morenadas and other Latin American rhythms. While in La Paz she continues to work in physical therapy, but it is music that runs through her soul.

CONQUISTANDO PALADARES Conquering palates The Cook Show Pop Up se realizó por segundo año consecutivo en el restaurante Jardín de Asia de Santa Cruz. Ante las cámaras de televisión y el público, seis chefs divididos en dos grupos prepararon 10 rondas de platos que pusieron a consideración de los comensales para que éstos, con sus aplausos, premien al final al mejor equipo. Lima Pop Up es el restaurante peruano que organiza esta actividad en conjunto con los chefs anfitriones de Jardín de Asia, Jaime Barbas y Ricardo Prudencio. El año pasado, este evento gastronómico fue elegido como el mejor de Bolivia por la página especializada ComoSur.

The Cook Show Pop Up was for the second consecutive year in the restaurant Jardín de Asia of Santa Cruz. Before the TV cameras and the public, six chefs divided into two groups prepared 10 rounds of dishes that put consideration of guests so that they, with their applause, reward at the end the best team. Pop Up Lima is the Peruvian restaurant which organizes this activity together with the host chefs from Jardín de Asia, Jaime Barba and Ricardo Prudencio. Last year, this gastronomic event was chosen as the best of Bolivia by the specialized page ComoSur.

HUSH PUPPIES MIMA A LAS MADRES Ubicada en la calle Velasco N° 22 de Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Hush Puppies inauguró su concept store, donde exhibe la colección otoñoinvierno 2015. La apertura fue organizada por Lola Group y contó con la presencia de las mamás y presentadoras de televisión Cecilia Bellido, Sandra Parada y Mikaela Byren, además de la presidenta de la fundación Davosan Joven, Ingrid Rivero, y una madre empresaria, Inés Arismendi.
