ALIANZA Y RESPETO Un compromiso a seguir Alliance and respect. A commitment to follow Distinguido pasajero: “Responsabilidad” hace referencia a un compromiso, ese es el significado que la Real Academia de la Lengua Española le atribuye a esta palabra. Para nosotros, en Amaszonas, es una alianza con la sociedad y por ende con nuestros clientes. Responsabilidad es también el hecho de ser responsable de alguien o de algo. Responsabilidad social es un parámetro que utilizan varias empresas para ratificar su vocación orientada al servicio. Nosotros preferimos llamarlo “respeto”. Hemos desarrollado alianzas con diferentes organizaciones e instituciones públicas y privadas para generar acciones que de manera conjunta obtengan un resultado más efectivo hacia la sociedad. De acuerdo a la última publicación de la revista Nueva Economía, en su informe sobre las 100 empresas más grandes de Bolivia y con mayor índice en responsabilidad social, Amaszonas está considerada entre las que más aportan al país en este rubro. Hace poco, en febrero, fuimos merecedores de una distinción que el Gobierno Municipal de Rurrenabaque nos concedió por el aporte que brindó nuestra compañía a esa población durante las inundaciones y deslizamientos que sufrió a principios de 2014. Cuando decidimos aumentar vuelos a las zonas afectadas o transportar a enfermos que estaban a punto de perder la vida, no analizábamos ningún título o reconocimiento, nos importaba las alianzas que hemos logrado con los ciudadanos de los destinos a los que conectamos, alianzas que no están firmadas o rubricadas en un papel, pero que están presentes cada vez que un avión de Amaszonas transporta a un ciudadano de estos lugares. Amaszonas es parte de la sociedad, activamente nos sentimos un componente de ella y lo vivimos así. Nuestro compromiso de alianza y respeto nos marca un camino y acción a seguir por la confianza que usted nos genera al preferirnos. Distinguished passenger: In the definition the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language gives to the word “responsibility,” reference is made to a commitment. For those of us at Amaszonas, it is about forming an alliance with society and with our clients. We also see responsibility as the act of being responsible with someone or something. Many companies use the term social responsibility as a parameter of their service-oriented ethic. We prefer to call it “respect.” We have developed alliances with different public and private organizations and institutions, so that together, we can take action to obtain an efficient result for society. According to the latest publication of the magazine Nueva Economía, in its report about the 100 largest companies in Bolivia and their contributions to social responsibility, Amaszonas is considered to be one of the companies that offers the most support in this area. In February, the Municipal Government of Rurrenabaque awarded us a distinction for our contribution to helping the population of the city during the flooding and landslides that occurred in early 2014. When we decided to increase the number of flights we provided daily or to offer free transport for people in danger of passing away, we did not think about any title or recognition. Instead, we cared about the alliances we had formed with citizens who live in the cities we connect, alliances that are not signed agreements nor found on paper, but which are present every time an Amaszonas flight carries a citizen of these places. Amaszonas is part of society and we actively feel that we are a component of it. Our commitment to alliance and respect, and the trust our clients have in us, mark our path and set our course of action. Thank you for allowing us together to be responsible.

Padres DE ALTO VUELO Top-notch fathers

Bolivia celebra el 19 de marzo el día dedicado a los papás. Este es un homenaje a los “reyes de la casa”, a quienes nos inspiran a ser hombres y mujeres de bien. On March 19, Bolivia celebrates Father’s Day. This article pays homage to “the kings of the house,” those who inspired us to be good men and women.

“Fue el tiempo que pasaste con tu rosa lo que la hizo tan importante”. Esta frase escrita por Antoine de Saint-Exupéry en El Principito se acomoda perfectamente a lo que manifiestan los padres que elegimos mostrar en esta edición conmemorativa al “rey de la casa”. Por su profesión ligada a la aeronáutica, cada uno de ellos ha sorteado mil contratiempos para estar cerca de su familia y, principalmente, de sus hijos. Sin embargo, todos consiguieron (y lo siguen haciendo) disfrutarlos y educarlos en el escaso pero valioso tiempo que tienen para hacerlo. Con todo, ellos están orgullosos de sus retoños y aseguran que los apoyarán en cualquier emprendimiento profesional que tengan en el futuro. Así no sigan sus pasos, estos papás les han otorgado a sus hijos alas para volar.

“It was the time that you spent with your rose that made it so important.” That phrase was written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in The Little Prince fits perfectly with the fathers we are highlighting in this article celebrating the “king of the house.” Because they all have a profession in aviation, each of them has had to sacrifice time with their families, especially their children. Nonetheless, they all have been able to (and continued) enjoy and educate their children in the little, but valuable time that they have together. Through it all, these fathers are proud of the children’s growth and reassure them that they will support them in any professional goal. Thus, even if they don’t follow in their footsteps, these fathers have given their children wings to fly.

ORGULLOSOS DE SU “PAPÁ SOLTERO” Proud of their “single father” Volvió a volar después de 15 años y con sus hijos se tuvo que adaptar a horarios con madrugadas, pernoctes, llegadas tarde, feriados sacrificados y ausencias a algunos acontecimientos familiares. Pero el comandante y asistente de la vicepresidencia de operaciones de Amaszonas Rolando Sandoval está convencido de que el tiempo que disfrutan juntos es bien aprovechado. “Los días de poca actividad planeamos un menú y entre los cuatro cocinamos desde el desayuno hasta la cena, cada uno se encarga de algo específico”, cuenta. “Si no tenemos ganas de hacerlo, visitamos a mis padres y allá compartimos con la familia grande”. Viajar de vacaciones es otra actividad que realizan juntos. En fines de año han estado en Coroico, Caranavi, Luribay, Urmiri, Oruro, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Arica e Iquique. Dos destinos que tienen pendiente son el salar de Uyuni y Machu Picchu. Sandoval es un “papá soltero” feliz con sus hijos Alejandro, Carlos y Milena. “Me llenan de orgullo y sé que ellos sienten lo mismo por mí”, asegura para luego contarnos una anécdota: “En los últimos años, el nombre de Amaszonas se ha hecho más conocido y para algunos chicos el tener un compañero cuyo padre vuela en esta aerolínea es muy especial. Por esa popularidad, un par de veces, hasta me han pedido autógrafo”. 12

After 15 years off, he started flying again, and together with his children he had to adapt to the early morning departures, overnight stays, late night arrivals, working on holidays and absence from father gatherings. Still, Commander and Assistant Vice President of Operations of Amaszonas, Rolando Sandoval is convinced that the time he spends with his children is well spent. “On the days when I have few activities, we plan a menu and between the four of us we cook, breakfast till dinner, with each of us is in charge of a specific part”, he says. “If we don’t feel like cooking, we visit my parents and spend time with the larger family”. Going on vacation is something else we do together. At the end of the year they’ve gone to Coroico, Caranavi, Luribay, Urmiri, Oruro, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Arica and Iquique. Two places still on their list to visit are the Salar of Uyuni and Machu Picchu. Sandoval is a single father who is happy with his children Alejandro, Carlos and Milena. “They fill me with pride and I know that they feel the same way about me”, he says just before sharing the following anecdote: “In the last few years, Amaszonas has become more well known, and for some kids, it is a big deal to have a classmate with a father who flies with this airline. Because of this, a couple of times, I have been asked for my autograph”.

ÉL VIAJA ENTRE LAS NUBES He flies in the clouds Para el capitán Christian Suárez, un padre jamás debe perder el lazo que lo une con sus hijos y por ello hay que dedicarles todo el tiempo libre que se tenga. “Jugar, sacarlos a pasear, a tomar helados y conversar es muy importante”, indica. Aunque su profesión lo obliga a ausentarse muchas veces de su casa, él intenta que sus niños (Joaquín Ignacio y Sebastián Facundo) lo tomen como algo interesante e, incluso, gracioso. “Saben que su papá es una de las pocas personas que pueden pilotar un avión o viajar entre las nubes”, dice con ternura. “Ellos tienen corazones que valen oro y me demuestran su sinceridad, educación y amor con abrazos, sonrisas, mimos y hasta con travesuras”. Con orgullo, este papá aviador confiesa que le encantaría que uno de sus hijos siga sus pasos. De hecho, cuenta que al mayor le gustan los aviones. Sin embargo, Suárez es consciente de que al final cada cual decidirá que rumbo darle a su vida.

For Captain Christian Suárez, a father must never lose the tie that binds him with his children, and thus he should dedicate all his free time to them. “Playing, taking them out, getting an ice cream and talking with them is all very important”, he says. Although his profession means that he is often away from home, he tries to make his children (Joaquín Ignacio and Sebastián Facundo) see that fact as something interesting and even something funny. “They know that their father is one of the few people 14

who can fly a plane and travel to the clouds”, he says sweetly. “They have hearts of gold and they show me their sincerity, upbringing and love with their hugs, smiles, affection and even naughtiness”. With pride, this aviator father confesses that he would love for one of his children to follow in his footsteps. And he says that his oldest likes planes. Nonetheless, Suárez knows that at the end of the day, each will decide his own path in life.

SUS HIJOS SERÁN HOMBRES DE BIEN His children will be good men El gran apoyo de Friedl Hochhaeuser para ser el buen padre de dos chicos ha sido su esposa. El capitán, que también funge en Amaszonas como vicepresidente de la aerolínea, piloto instructor y chequeador de la DGAC, confiesa que es muy difícil ser papá cuando se tiene que estar ausente del hogar por largo tiempo y varias veces. Como familia, en muchas ocasiones hemos sacrificado momentos importantes, pero felizmente han habido otros como reemplazo y fueron muy gratificantes para todos”. Sus hijos Friedl y Stephan ya están grandes; el mayor terminó el colegio el año pasado y se alista para ingresar a la universidad. “No quiso seguir esta noble carrera”, manifiesta con cierta pena este amante de la aeronáutica de apellido complicado para pronunciar. No obstante, él no se complica por el tema: sabe que sus hijos, con el oficio que tengan, serán hombres de bien y excelentes profesionales. Él se los ha inculcado. 16

Como muchos padres, estos señores han tenido que sacrificar tiempo con sus hijos. Like many fathers, these men have had to sacrifice spending time with their children.

A great support to Friedl Hochhaeuser in being a good father to his two children has been his wife. The captain, who is also a Vice President of Amaszonas, a flying instructor, and DGAC liaison, confesses that it can be hard to be a father when he must be away from home for long periods of time. “As a family, on many occasions, we have sacrificed important moments, but fortunately there have been other moments that have served to replace them and that have been very gratifying for us all”. His sons, Friedl and Stephan, are almost grown; the oldest finished high school last year and is getting ready to start college. “He doesn’t want to follow me into this noble career”, this man with a hard name to pronounce says with a bit of sadness, for he loves aviation. Still, he doesn’t let the topic complicate things: he knows that his sons, whatever the profession they chose, will be good men and excellent professionals. He inoculated them with that.

HEREDÓ LA PASIÓN POR VOLAR Inheriting the passion for flying A Farid, hijo de José Fabián Pastor, le ha encantado volar desde que era bebé. Según él, nunca ha llorado ni se ha incomodado en el avión, cuando salen de vacaciones con sus padres. “Si cuando sea grande quiere ser piloto, yo estaría feliz y trataría de pasarle todos mis conocimientos y experiencias para que él sea un buen aviador”, manifiesta. Y es que al piloto del avión presidencial su niño lo tiene chocho. Cuando llega del trabajo y los fines de semana que tiene libre, manejan bicicleta, van al cine o al parque, juegan con la computadora, la tableta o la pelota y con el simulador de vuelo. “Definitivamente a él le gusta mucho el tema de los aviones. Siempre me pregunta qué es lo que hago en el avión, por qué en la cabina hay tantos botones y luces, a qué ciudad tengo que ir y cuándo regresaré a casa”, cuenta. 18

Farid, son of José Fabián Pastor, has loved to fly since he was a baby. According to his father, he never cried or fussed on an airplane when he went with his parents on vacation. “If, when he is older, he wants to be a pilot, I would be happy and try to pass on to him all my knowledge and experiences so that he can be a good pilot”, he said. This man, who is the pilot of the presidential plane, is crazy about his son. When he gets home from work and on the weekends when he has free time, together they ride bikes, go to the movies or to the park, or play on the computer, or tablet or on the flight simulator. “My son definitely likes airplanes. He always asks me what I do on the airplane, and why there are so many buttons and lights in the cockpit, and he asks where I am flying to and when I will be back”, he says.

“TRABAJAR JUNTOS ES UN PRIVILEGIO” “Working together is a privilege” Para ella es un honor, para él un orgullo. Padre e hija comparten la pasión por la aeronáutica y le dedican sus vidas trabajando juntos en la aerolínea Amaszonas. Al narrar esta experiencia ellos no pueden evitar mirarse a los ojos con amor y complicidad. Luis Vera, como vicepresidente ejecutivo, cuenta que para él es un orgullo que ahora una de sus hijas, Alejandra, sea una de las personas que mejor conoce la empresa, “incluso crecieron juntas”, dice. Luis tiene cinco hijas. “En cada ocasión que supe que sería padre sentí la misma emoción indescriptible de felicidad absoluta; sin embargo, cada una de ellas fue especial y diferente”, recuerda. Alejandra, dedicada al aseguramiento de calidad y seguridad operacional de aeropuertos, enfatiza: “Mi padre me dio el mejor ejemplo de dedicación, pasión y amor al trabajo. Trabajar juntos es un privilegio”. 20

Alejandra está casada con un piloto. Para su padre es un gusto ver crecer a la familia aeronáutica. Alejandra is married to a pilot. For her father, it is a joy to see their aviation family grow.

For her, it is an honor and for him, it is a source of pride. Father and daughter share a passion for aviation and they dedicate their lives to working together for Amaszonas. When they tell this story they cannot help but look at one another with love and complicity. Luis Vera, Executive Vice President, says that for him it is an honor that one of his daughters, Alejandra, is one of the people who best knows the company, “they even grew up together”, he says. Luis has five daughters. “Each time I became a father, I felt that same indescribable emotion of absolute joy; while at the same time, each one was special and different”, he remembers. Alejandra dedicates herself to quality assurance and operational security in the airports, and she emphasis, “my father showed me the best example of dedication, passion and love of the job. Working together is a privilege”.

UN GRAN APOYO PARA SU CARRERA A great support for his career “Somos una familia llena de pilotos. Desde niños todos sentimos pasión por los aviones y ahora me tocó ver como mi hijo tuvo amor por esta profesión y esa fue una de las alegrías más grandes de mi vida”, expresa Carlos Luzio, histórico trabajador de la aviación boliviana con más de 45 años de experiencia. Rodrigo Luzio ahora comanda aeronaves de Amaszonas mientras su progenitor está en el área de gerencia en tierra. “Mi padre fue una ayuda fundamental para mi carrera. Me sacaba de dudas, me explicaba y sobretodo, desde niño, me tuvo en contacto con los aviones”, cuenta agradecido. Ambos aprovechan cada vuelo que los reúne para darse un abrazo. “Es emocionante poder compartir los mismos gustos y pasiones. Todo lo que siento es amor y gratitud por mi padre”, señala Rodrigo. “Aprecio que mi hijo tenga la misma vocación porque eso nos permitió acostumbrarnos a los viajes y a otros gajes de este hermoso oficio”, completa Carlos.

Rodrigo Luzio is a pilot for Amaszonas, while his father worked in the area of management. “My father was a fundamental help to my career. He helped me get over my doubts, and he explained things to me and more than 22

anything else, ever since I was little, he let me be in contact with airplanes”, he says with much appreciation. Both take advantage of each flight that allows their paths to cross, by giving one another a hug. “It is emotional being able to share the same passions. I feel great love and thankfulness for my father,” says Rodrigo. “I appreciate that my son and I have the same vocation because it allows us to get used to the trips and other occupational hazards of this wonderful profession”, says Carlos.

IMPERIO ETERNO Cuando occidente descubrió Machu Picchu en 1911 había familias campesinas viviendo allí, usando los sistemas acuíferos y las terrazas agrícolas que funcionan hasta hoy. Esta metrópoli incaica se salvó del saqueo español y vive para demostrar de lo que fue capaz una de las culturas más poderosas del continente. ETERNAL EMPIRE In 1911, when Machu Picchu was discovered by the West, indigenous families lived there and used its water systems and agricultural terraces that still work today. This Inca metropolis was spared from Spanish looting and today lives on to show the ability of one of the most powerful cultures of the continent. A human feat so impressive, even its ruins are considered wonders of the world. A LA CONQUISTA DEL IMPERIO Se puede revivir la historia y caminar hasta siete días por los cientos de caminos del inca. Los más extremos optan por rutas con escalada y ciclismo de montaña. Luego de la procesión y de la celebración de la misa, por las principales calles se percibe el aroma exquisito del sabroso caldo de gallina, las empanadas, el dulce de maíz blanco, los tamales y las tortas. ALFOMBRAS Y PROCESIONES En Lima, el distrito que vive con mayor entusiasmo la Semana Santa es el de Surco. El jueves los feligreses varones se visten de blanco y cubren su cabeza con cucuruchos para hacer guardia durante la noche a la imagen del Santo Sepulcro. CARPETS AND PROCESSIONS In Lima, the district that is most enthusiastic in celebrating Easter Week is that of Surco. On Good Friday, a contest of floral carpet making is held, that has hundreds of participants from different brotherhoods and parishes from different parts of the district, from the rest of Lima and from around the country. IQUIQUE BURNS JUDAS Just after midnight on the Saturday of Easter Week, the burning of Judas is a custom that takes place on the edge of the Centenario market in Iquique. A rag doll represents the disciple who, according to the Bible was a traitor to Jesus. The doll is hung from rope and as it is burned, coins of different values fall out of its body, and the bravest people present grab the hot money. Prior to this activity that also takes place in other places in Latin America, the party starts with competition and musical presentations, as well as traditional raffles. The prizes are sponsored by local merchants. THEATER IN TUCUMAN Tucuman opens its doors to tourists and invites them to enjoy unforgettable landscapes and events throughout Easter Week. Among the many activities, much attention is given to theater productions that reenact the suffering of Jesus and the Criolla Mass, which are offered at various places in the province, as well as the capital San Miguel. Al paceño Adolfo Calle le llevaron tres días y cuatro noches llegar a Copacabana manejando su flamante vagoneta Ford desde Buenos Aires. “Le prometí a la Virgencita que si lograba comprarla vendría hasta acá con ella y mi familia para pedir su bendición”, indica mientras derrama al suelo un chorrito de cerveza para luego beberse el resto que queda en el vaso. Como don Adolfo, miles de personas de diversos lugares del mundo llegan anualmente a Copacabana para pedir y agradecer a la Virgen del Titicaca por los favores recibidos, ya sean materiales, sentimentales o de salud. 48

Adolfo Calle, a Bolivian from La Paz, currently living in Buenos Aires, drove his brand new Ford station wagon for three days and four nights in order to reach Copacabana. “I promised the Virgin that if I was ever able to buy a car, I would bring her here, with my family, and we would ask for her blessing,” he said as he poured a bit of beer onto the ground, leaving the rest for himself to drink from the glass. Just like Don Adolfo, thousands of people from diverse locations of the world, come to Copacabana each year to ask and thank the Virgin of Lake Titicaca for favors.

LA MILAGROSA DE AMÉRICA Copacabana está ubicada a 155 km de La Paz, entre los cerros Calvario y Niño Calvario. Su nombre evoca a la deidad andina Copakawana, equivalente a la diosa griega Afrodita o la romana Venus, a quien se solicitaba pareja y fecundidad. Esas características dieron pie al sincretismo religioso del ícono precolombino con la Virgen María. Sobre el templo al dios Sol, a 3.841 m.s.n.m., se levantó el santuario mariano más importante de Bolivia. El culto a la Virgen de Copacabana se inició en 1583, cuando llegó la imagen al pueblo. “Desde una ventana, allá arriba, la ‘morenita’ mira constantemente al lago porque es la protectora de los pescadores”, dice la vendedora de velas Carmen Soria. “Los fines de semana, el cura le da vuelta para que ella esté de frente a los feligreses en el templo”. CH’ALLA EN SEMANA SANTA Semana Santa es la época del año cuando los peregrinos atiborran Copacabana. No obstante, la población acoge a diario a gente que llega en buses, catamaranes, botes a motor, vehículos particulares e, incluso, caminando desde La Paz. El Viernes Santo los feligreses suben al cerro Calvario cargando piedras como sacrificio. Una a una las van arrojando en las estaciones que recuerdan el camino de Jesús al Gólgota. Esto asegura una cocción uniforme y que su jugo, en vez de caer, vaya rodeando la carne dándole sabor”, explica Alexandre Tavares, un carioca apasionado por el churrasco. COWBOYS, ARGENTINE AND URUGUAYAN “An Uruguayan griller doesn’t use a grill with grooves, but instead one with simple rods so that the fat melts over the coals and the vapor wraps around the meat”, explain the grillers in the central market of Montevideo. “Another fundamental principle is that you must never use charcoal, but only wood. Charcoal is toxic!” they assure. “Grilled Argentine meat has the best flavor because they use the charcoal of quebracho (type of tree) which is very aromatic”, contradicts Lopez. “The grilling in Brazil is done on a sword: they stab the meat in thick cuts and cook it rotisserie style. That ensures uniform cooking and it also ensures that the juice, instead of falling way, wraps itself around the meat, thus adding flavor”, explains Alexandre Tavares, a man from Rio de Janeiro. 62

Hay ejemplos de ello: Diego Golombek es un biólogo argentino que recopiló entrevistas a celebrados parrilleros de barrio y destacados científicos para lograr su libro El parrillero científico. A su vez, un programa de ciencia en el canal estatal brasileño también se lanzó al entendimiento científico de las tradiciones churrasqueras. Al final todos los expertos concuerdan en que lo importante es que el asado sea una excusa para pasar un tiempo de gracia y confraternización con los seres queridos. We will Lollapalooza Sudamérica se alista para vibrar con un tercer Lollapalooza. A los de Santiago y San Pablo, se suma el de Buenos Aires. El festival de rock alternativo, indie, rap y punk rock, que cuenta con actuaciones cómicas y de danza, nació en Estados Unidos, en 1991, concebido por Perry Farrell, cantante de Jane’s Addiction. Y aunque el evento fue exitoso, se terminó en 1997 y volvió a la vida en 2003. En el 2011 se realizó la primera versión chilena, en Santiago. Al año siguiente le siguió la brasileña en San Pablo. Jack White, Calvin Harris, Robert Plant, Skrillex, The Smashing Pumpkins, Foster the People, Kasabian, Interpol, The Kooks, Bastille, Alt J, Major Lazer, Cypress Hill, Pedro Aznar, Nicky Romero y St Vincente, son algunos de los 50 artistas confirmados. En Buenos Aires estarán los mexicanos Molotov y una cantante argentina cuyo seudónimo es Miss Bolivia.

Ya sea con trajes clásicos de chaqueta o con pantalones coulotte o palazzo, la clave es desterrar la falda para dar paso a un look que se sitúa en un punto entre lo masculino, lo cosmopolita y que no pierde jamás ese punto tan sexi. Todo empezó en 2013 con Anna Mouglalis, la actriz francesa protagonista de Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky. Fue ella la que en el día de su boda combinó un vestido de alta costura de Chanel, con unos pantalones de cuero y así dio el puntapié inicial a una tendencia que tardaría poco en prosperar: las novias con pantalones. Los gatos nos invaden: en YouTube protagonizan más de dos millones de videos. Y en países como Canadá, Rusia o Francia sobrepasan al número de canes que viven en hogares. Pero lo innovador es todo el mercado que ha surgido alrededor de estas mascotas: videos, ropa, cosmética, festivales, libros... Esta locura por los mininos tiene una vertiente terapéutica, la gatoterapia. “Su compañía alegra, desestresa y ayuda con trastornos sicológicos como la depresión, la esquizofrenia, el déficit de atención o el autismo”, explica Francesc Cuatrecasas, autor del libro Gato-terapia. Esta afirmación tiene base científica: según la universidad de California, convivir con un gato baja la presión arterial y su ronroneo estimula la actividad celular y pone en movimiento las enzimas. This finding is based in science: according to the University of California, living with a cat reduces blood pressure and the cat’s purr simulates cell activity and gets enzymes moving.

¿El colmo del lujo? Depende. Para los príncipes y jeques árabes las características internas del Airbus A380 son solo comodidades, lo mismo que para muchos mortales dispuestos a pagar alrededor de $us 17.500 por volar en él. Obviamente, el precio variará según sea el destino, la ubicación y los servicios que desee utilizar en este inmenso avión que las aerolíneas Emirates, Singapore, Qantas, AirFrance, Lufthansa, entre otras, ya utilizan orgullosas. Su primer vuelo se realizó el 25 de octubre de 2007, cuando más de 450 personas que habían comprado sus billetes en una subasta benéfica en eBay se dieron el gusto de viajar en el avión de pasajeros más grande del mundo. Ese día, la primera de las aeronaves de Singapore Airlines, enlazaba Singapur y Sídney. Con una capacidad máxima de 853 asientos, este súper jet fue el modelo elegido por el príncipe saudí Al Waleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz al Saud para la construcción de su nuevo avión privado. El precio de un A380 regular se calcula en 350 millones de dólares y el magnate habría decidido gastar otros 150 millones en “detallitos” de decoración. Top luxury? It depends. Berisso, conocida como aeropuerto de Carrasco por el barrio en el que se encuentra, recuerda a un pionero de la aviación charrúa. En 1913 realizó el primero vuelo en solitario de un uruguayo. En 1922, llevó un mensaje de salutación del presidente de su país al pueblo brasileño en su centenario. Voló desde Santiago a Río de Janeiro.

VIRU VIRU SANTA CRUZ DE LA SIERRA - BOLIVIA El nombre proviene del vocablo guaraní birubiru, que se refiere a un río arcaico, ya seco, que cortaba la pampa donde se encuentra el aeropuerto. This name comes from the word birubiru in Guarani, and it refers to an ancient river, now dry, that cut through the prairie where today the airport is located.

EL ALTO LA PAZ - BOLIVIA Hasta 1999, tenía como nombre oficial Aeropuerto John F. Kennedy. Ante la presión de distintos sectores, el aeropuerto pasó a denominarse oficialmente El Alto. ¿La razón? Roque Mendoza llegó a Bolivia en 1975 para el lanzamiento de una marca de cigarrillos y de inmediato Santa Cruz de la Sierra lo atrapó. Dedicado al diseño publicitario y a la música, este santafesino, dueño de Clapton, es un referente de la movida nocturna cruceña. In 1975, Roque Mendoza arrived in Bolivia to launch a brand of cigarettes, and he was immediately trapped by Santa Cruz. Working in publicity and music, this Argentine owner of “Clapton” (a blues club), is a nightlife reference point in Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz de la Sierra, 1975. Desde Argentina llega Roque Mendoza para hacer realidad un emprendimiento privado: abrir una industria tabacalera en el oriente boliviano, ofertando tabacos locales al mundo. “La ciudad a la que acababa de llegar era fascinante: tenía casi 100 mil habitantes y era una especie de Macondo (el apacible pueblo caribeño descrito por Gabriel García Márquez en la novela Cien años de soledad) que me atrapó, junto con las delicias del lugar y la hospitalidad del cruceño. Acá te abren los brazos como en ningún otro lado”, afirma. En aquella época, la ciudad comenzaba a expandir sus anillos y era casi virgen en el área de Santa Cruz de la Sierra, 1975. The city, together with the delicacies of this place and hospitality of the people of Santa Cruz, trapped me. Here, people open their arms to you unlike in any other place,” he said. 82

A sus 63 años, Roque disfruta la “juventud de su vejez” junto a grandes amigos, a quienes no cree haber podido encontrar en otra parte del mundo. At 63 years of age, Roque is enjoying the “youth of old age” together with his great friends; friends he doesn’t believe he would ever have found in another part of the world.

Si bien anduvo en todos los campos relacionados a esta área de la comunicación, fue un estudioso de las tipografías y las estructuras, de ahí dio el paso a la elaboración de letreros. Junto al entonces campeón de automovilismo Chino Méndez, Roque Mendoza creó Talento, una fábrica de letreros de neón y comenzó la tarea de iluminar la ciudad. “Mezclamos la magia del neón con la adrenalina de las carreras”, recuerda emocionado. Música entre neones ¿Te gusta el blues? A Roque Mendoza le fascina. Con un grupo de amigos, hace casi 19 años, encontraron una vieja tapera (casa), la refaccionaron con fierros de su taller y en 15 días dieron a luz una leyenda cruceña: Clapton Club. “Logramos hacer muchos conciertos con los mejores grupos de blues y rock de Sudamérica y el mundo, entre ellos Pappo, Litto Nebbia, Vox Dei, Omar Itcovici, Gabriel Gratzer, Botafogo, Don Vilanova, Alejandro Medina, Cristina Dall, Lois Robinson, Jose Luis Pardo, Los Ratones Paranoicos, Christy Doran, Peter Materna, Schorn Puntin, Danny Vincent y hasta Charly García y Alejandro Lerner. Desde que decidió echar raíces en Bolivia, las actividades de este santafesino estuvieron ligadas a la publicidad y la música. “En 1976 formé parte de un programa radial que se emitía por la estación Willy Bendeck y era conducido por Jorge Gil y Papi Nürnberg, quienes más tarde me invitarían a refundar Canal 11”, indica. Entre sus proyectos actuales están la renovación de Clapton Club y la organización de una muestra de sus trabajos en neón. “En mi taller diseñamos letreros, estands, fachadas, escenarios, iluminación con ledes y por supuesto neón. Este año, mi sueño es instalar una pieza de neón en cada casa”.

At that time, the city was starting to expand and publicity was new, a fact that didn’t go unnoticed by this man from Argentina, who now has a white beard. Ever since he decided to put down roots in Bolivia, everything he has done has been linked to publicity and music. “In 1976, I became part of a radio show on Willy Bendeck’s radio station. The radio show was hosted by Jorge Gil and Papi Nürnberg and later, they invited me to help relaunch Channel 11. Amongst his current projects is the renovation of the Clapton Club and the organization of a show of neon creations. “In my workshop, we design billboards, stands, facades, scenery, lighting and, of course, neon. This year, my dream is to install a work of neon in each house.”

Con el eslogan “Carnaval boliviano: una experiencia que tienes que vivir”, Paceña invitó al mundo a disfrutar la experiencia carnavalera en nuestro país. El broche de oro de este esfuerzo lo puso el actor británico Jude Law, que asistió al corso cruceño luego de presenciar, por la mañana, la entrada folclórica de Oruro. El camarote Paceña en el Cambódromo cruceño fue montado y organizado por Lola Group. Para ver el desfile de las comparsas, reinas y al protagonista de Sherlock Holmes, asistieron empresarios, modelos, reinas de belleza, periodistas y grupos de amigos y familiares. Una banda de música y un DJ se encargaron de ponerle ritmo a la noche que daba inicio a la fiesta del Rey Momo. La soberana del Carnaval y los Picarones estuvieron en el lugar apenas terminaron su recorrido. El camarote los recibió con fuegos artificiales y una lluvia de papeles brillantes. RURRENABAQUE, AGRADECIDA Rurrenabaque, thankful Mediante una ordenanza, durante los actos protocolares por el 171º aniversario de creación de Rurrenabaque (Bolivia), el gobierno municipal de esta ciudad beniana entregó un reconocimiento a la línea aérea Amaszonas por la labor de responsabilidad social desplegada durante un deslizamiento e inundación que sufrió el Beni en 2014. Entre enero y marzo, Amaszonas realizó diferentes vuelos solidarios para abastecer de productos alimenticios a Rurrenabaque y alrededores, se trasladó a personas enfermas que necesitaban de atención médica superior y se aumentaron los vuelos para apoyar el puente aéreo de emergencia. Merced a esta acción se pudieron salvar varias vidas, como los de la profesora Juanita Cartagena que fue una de las víctimas del deslizamiento y que también recibió un reconocimiento en el acto público realizado el pasado 2 de febrero. En el caso de Amaszonas, el reconocimiento fue dirigido al presidente ejecutivo, Sergio de Urioste, y al vicepresidente ejecutivo comercial, Luis Vera. AMASZONAS, SPONSOR DEL CLUB SAN JOSÉ DE ORURO San José, el club de fútbol más popular y de amplio apoyo en Oruro, volará durante toda esta gestión en Amaszonas. El acuerdo se firmó en la sede del club orureño y establece un apoyo corporativo para que los jugadores, cuerpo técnico y directivos puedan trasladarse en esta línea aérea a las ciudades donde se disputen los partidos de la liga profesional. By decree, during the formal acts of the 171st Anniversary of Rurrenabaque (Bolivia), the municipal government publically recognized Amaszonas for the social responsibility work the airline performed during the flooding and landslides that the Department of Beni suffered in 2014. Between January and March 2014, Amaszonas provided solidarity flights to supply food products to Rurrenabaque and its surroundings, and to transport sick people in need of medical attention. Amaszonas also increased the number of flights offered in order to assist with emergency services. Thanks to these actions lives were saved, including that of Professor Juanita Cartagena who was one of the landslide victims and who also received public recognition on February 2. In the case of Amaszonas, this public recognition was given to the Executive President, Sergio de Urioste, and the Executive Vice-President, Luis Vera. AMASZONAS, SPONSOR OF THE SAN JOSE OF ORURO SOCCER CLUB San Jose, the most popular soccer club in Oruro, will fly on Amaszonas throughout the season. The agreement was signed in the headquarters of this Oruro-based soccer club. The agreement establishes corporate support for the players, coaches and directors, and enables them to take Amaszonas’ flights to reach the destinations where they will play against other teams in the professional league. On October 1, 2015, Amaszonas started to offer service to Oruro with connections to Santa Cruz and Iquique. Since then, Amaszonas has become an important ally of the citizens and their institutions. AMASZONAS EN ALIANZA POR INTEGRACIÓN REGIONAL Las autoridades locales de Iquique (Chile) han destacado en varias oportunidades la conexión regional que permite Amaszonas con Bolivia y Sudamérica. En una reciente reunión entre el vicepresidente de relaciones institucionales de Amaszonas, Eddy Luis Franco, y el alcalde de esa ciudad del norte chileno, Jorge Soria, se ratificó el interés en reafirmar la relación turística, comercial y de amistad que existe entre Iquique y Bolivia. Amaszonas vuela a esa urbe desde Santa Cruz y Oruro seis veces a la semana.

SALUDO A NUEVAS AUTORIDADES DE URUGUAY Amaszonas comenzó a volar a Montevideo (Uruguay) desde el pasado 4 de diciembre, inicialmente con tres vuelos a la semana y desde enero de forma diaria. Este crecimiento fue transmitido al ministro de Transportes y Obras Públicas del Uruguay, Víctor Rossi, que destacó la conexión aérea que permite Amaszonas al ciudadano uruguayo con Paraguay y Bolivia. Las nuevas autoridades uruguayas comenzaron un nuevo periodo de gobierno el próximo 1 de marzo a la cabeza del recientemente elegido presidente, Tabaré Vázquez.

AMASZONAS IN ALLIANCE FOR REGIONAL INTEGRATION. The local authorities of Iquique (Chile) have, on various occasions, drawn attention to the opportunities made possible by the regional connections with Bolivia and South America provided by Amaszonas. In a recent meeting between the Vice President of Institutional Relations of Amaszonas, Eddy Luis Franco, and the mayor of this city located in northern Chile, Jorge Soria, the commitment to the existent relationship of tourism, commerce and friendship between Iquique and Bolivia was reaffirmed. Amaszonas flies to this city from Santa Cruz via Oruro six times a week.

BEST WISHES TO THE NEW AUTHORITIES IN URUGUAY Amaszonas started to fly to Montevideo (Uruguay) on December 4 of last year. In the beginning, there were three flights a week, but since January, Amaszonas has offered a daily flight. Upon hearing of this increase in flights, Victor Rossi, the Uruguayan Minister of Transportation and Public Works, called attention to the air connection that Amaszonas provides Uruguay with Paraguay and Bolivia. The new Uruguayan authorities begin a new term of government on March 1st, under the leadership of recently elected President, Tabaré Vázquez. AMASZONAS, OFFICIAL TRANSPORT FOR THE ORURO CARNIVAL Ratifying its position as the premier tourism airline of Bolivia, Amaszonas received the title of Official Transport for the Oruro Carnival 2015. This announcement was made during a press conference held by the Association of Folkloric Groups of Oruro, and it was they who signed the sponsorship agreement. UNESCO declared the Carnival of Oruro to be an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and Oruro’s Carnival is one of the main tourist attractions of Bolivia.
